Reviews (page 10 of 12)

Some absolute bangers if you are 9 year old me and don't understand the misogynistic lyrics

Wasn't familiar with their earlier stuff. Interesting to hear how it evolved. 3.5/5

As an album opener, it's pretty hard to top Paint it Black. I'm not sure the rest of the album keeps up that level of awesomeness but as an early stones album, you can hear their transition in progress to globe shagging rock icons

This exceeded my expectations. Bluesy and melodic. Apparently The Stones' 'Rubber Soul'. Preferred it to that. Maybe I'll settle the age-old debate through this process. So far: Stones 1-0 Beatles. 3.5/5.

Some big name classics on this, as well as some unfamiliar (to me, being not VERY deeply into the Stones) gems. Also a fair bit of not that inspiring blues/rock retread typical of the times' English rock scene.

A revelation that the stones were this god, but I can't get past the production quality.

Some solid singles. Definitely not the best Rolling Stones album

It was a-ok. There were a few songs to enjoy but mostly filler to me. 3/5

Ok music, bad lyrics.

Easy listening and couple of proper classics.

Much better than I'd expected.

Side 1 Under My Thumb and Mother's Little Helper are fine songs. Technically MLH is an anti-drug song but not on purpose. The Glimmer Twins were writing a song to insult middle aged women and ridicule the older generation's view that pool hall drugs were bad while equally or more addictive drug store drugs were fine. The anti-drug message was completely unintended. I'm sure Stupid Girl would be guaranteed lots of air play if released today lol. Goin Home reflects a desire to make a really long song. They succeeded! Unfortunately, the song is boring. A great thing about seeing bands in concert is that they can elongate a song so their fans hear something "new" when they see the band live. The last 8 minutes should have been saved for their concerts. Side 2 starts solid with lesser known rockers (Flight 505, High and Dry and Out of Time) that display what the Stones do best. When asked to comment on the similarity between the cover of Sgt Peps and Her Majesties Satanic Request, John Lennon said: Yeah whenever we do something new the Stones always do similar things 6 months later. Take it or Leave It is an excellent example of this as it moves away from what the Stones did best (the first 3 songs on the side) to gentler melodies the Beatles were doing. The band seems awkward doing this. The song also incorporates an exotic instrument from the Far East (Brian plays Koto). Hmmm, what other band was incorporating exotic instruments in the six months preceding Aftermath? Hint: The band's name would be an insect's name if you replaced the A with an E. A similar comment could be made about Lady Jane.

This certainly has a twangy 60s feel to it. I like the instrumentation on the hits, Mother's Little Helper and Under My Thumb. Brian Jones added a lot to those, even though he wasn’t around for long after. Many of the other songs, IMO, are not strong compositions. They have a standard country or blues feel like they’re trying to find another hit and the choruses they arrive at don’t deliver. After the second time they hit the chorus on “Going Home” I was ready to skip to the next song and saw that there was still 9 minutes left!

Great band. Must of been hard always being in the Beatles shadow but at least mick wasn’t corrupted by a wailing Japanese psychotic noise box. He sure knows how to point a finger. Probably the best in the finger pointing game and that makes up for being the second best band of the 60’s.

much better than beggars banquet. couple of bangers, then some fairly decent filler. barring the massive hits if you were to play me this album again i would think i'd never heard it before, but it wasn't unpleasant. i quite liked the track at the end where Mick did a shit impression of Jim Morrison. would have been a standout track if mick wasn't waffling repetetive generic sex related stuff over the top.

Stuck this on and settled down to read the Pandora Papers. Top morning. If this album was a politician using an offshore account to buy a property, it'd be Tony Blair. If only it had Paint it Black in it, which Scott thinks it did.

It took me a long time to get into the Stones. Because I'm a Beatles fan and I assumed their peak was at the same time (mid-late 60s). But that's not correct. In fact, if you go year-for-year comparing the two bands, the beatles win all the years. Ha. But that's missing the point (and the peak) of the Stones. I realize that now. When the Beatles were largely floundering as solo project in the early 70s, the Stones were renting French Chateaus and shooting smack while making their best records. Aftermath isn't one of those records. It's one that still features Brian Jones (who cares about that guy?). Which means they're still trying to fit a square peg (blues rock) into a round hole (the desire/market to be psychedelic). All that being said, there are some incredible moments here that rank among the Stones best songs. "Under My Thumb" is so great.

I like the Stones, but not sure I’d ever listened to this album. It’s fun to hear them experiment with some new sounds and instruments - especially in the context of 1966 when this would have seemed a little more “out there” compared to what other bands were doing. Still, it makes the album, as a whole, seem a little disjointed.

A really really good album but I'm partially torn with the cliched lyrics of "Stupid Girl". "clothes she wears, the way she comes her hair."... Then Jagger uses the clothes lyrics again in "Under my Thumb". Stylistically, it seems to jump all over the place as well. "Doncha Bother Me" seems to come out of nowhere.

A bit ... sexist, and but good proto-stones.

Despite the differences between the US and UK version, I got very excited by the tracklist of this album. I listened to the UK version, plus “Paint It, Black” at the beginning. That and “Under My Thumb” are classics. Hilariously, the only other songs that stuck out to me were two featured only on the UK tracklist, so I can’t say definitely which version is better. But this album without Paint It, Black would lose at least half a star. Still consistent Stones sound, though less bluesy than the other albums we’ve heard. I liked this, but didn’t love it. Still waiting for an amazing Stones album to roll me over. Favorite tracks: Paint It Black, Under My Thumb, Out of Time, What to Do. Album art: Both versions are just a band photo, with Keith Richards seemingly wearing the same shirt. I’d give a slight artistic edge to the UK version, since US is just a little distorted and that’s it. But neither is very memorable. 3.5/5

Pretty raw and from the heart. Always surprises me when I'm reminded how similar The Stones are in parts to The Beatles.

UK or US release? If the two were combined in to one album including all the songs it would be a strong 4 or higher. Because the UK version is without "Paint it Black" and the US version is missing a few from the UK version, including "Mother's Little Helper". These are the two standout songs to me. Losing one on each version is killer. The rest of the albums contain many well-known Stones classics. But, because of all the different versions I'm giving it a strong 3/5. It would be a 4/5 with all songs included. I HATE when record companies do this!

Good jams. Lyrics did not age well.

I mean FFS It starts with Paint it Black. What a tune. And it's all downhill from there. Under my thumb ain't bad

Couple of classics on there

Return to this one

Not the best Stones album

Solid Stones album.

Not the biggest Rolling Stones fan, and I still haven't been swayed. This album in my opinion was pretty average. Nothing really stood out. 3/5 stars.

Under my thumb is the best jam on this piece.

That album has interesting tracks, but some are very specific.

The Stones are a mega group I’ve just never been able to get into. This album helps. Nothing on here I really love, and I really don’t like the last track. This will help me like the Stones a bit better. A bit.

🤷🏻‍♂️

Some classic stuff on this.

Under my thumb!

Some really good songs on this

Good but miles away from great. 3 or 4 really good songs and then a lot of songs that make me wish I was listening to Motown or The Doors instead

Some pretty classic tunes, most of it seemed just OK to me.

Under My Thumb + a bunch of other songs that I won't remember. Kind of a medium-low energy. Sometimes folksy, a bit nostalgic.

Wow, some solid sexism across the board here, but Stupid Girl is incredibly bad haha. I enjoyed Out of Time, which is the only song I really knew here, but I didn’t like the pop sound of this album as much as their harder rock songs.

Pretty solid early Stones showing here. Of course "Paint it Black," and "Under My Thumb," are huge hits, but the rest wasn't just filler. I found myself drifting quite a bit during this album though just because a lot of the Stones blues rock does get a bit samey after awhile.

“Going Home” is my favorite track on the album. I’ve never been a big Stones fan but I see why people like them.

Paint It, Black brings this up to the 3, but otherwise lackluster album.

The first five tracks are some of the most misogynistic around (Lady Jane aside), but at least one of them - Under My Thumb - is a stone cold classic. Bit of a funny album, it feels quite transitional, with a fair bit of filler. However, the edge that Jagger brings means it's superior filler!

Never listened to a whole Rolling Stones album before. I liked it.

Not a bad album, you really hear their blues influence on “Doncha Bother Me”. Also had some of their hits like “Mother’s Little Helper” and the the feminist disliked “Under My Thumb”. Fun fact “Under My Thumb” was the song The Rolling Stones finished up when Meredith Hunter was stabbed by a member of Hell’s Angels acting as security after Hunter pulled a gun during the free Altamont Concert that left him dead in 1969.

I'm not a big rolling stones fan, and this album reinforced that. I like Under my Thumb and Paint it Black, and I appreciate the song writing, but it still just sounds like a garage band that is never quite in sync.

- a very folky Rolling Stones album - lyrics feel kind of scumy and misogynistic - overall decent album, something to put on in the background

Lever listened to this. Wow!

All my stones knowledge comes from greatest hits. Frankly I always thought they were overrated. This album was solid! Paint it black and under my thumb are two favorites. Aside from those two, the only new songs I really liked were stupid girl and I am Waiting. The rest of the album did a great job showing the stones blues roots, and I got a kick out of the slide guitar, but nothing else struck me the same way. This feels like a 3.5 that I’m struggling to round up or down on.

not bad. some good songs

Yep, fine. Fave track - "Paint it Black", by a mile. "Under My Thumb" is a tune too, though...

under my thumb is fantastic, and always will be...but i just don't love the stones. i think it's mick. he's just always felt kinda sleazy to me, ever since i was a kid. i'd probably like them better if i'd been older when i first heard them.

It was fine, I like the Stones, but in my old age have heard enough of them. I did like hearing some songs I have never heard before.

This may be unpopular but this album is far too long. Overindulgent with some solid tracks.

Decent Rock and roll

Pretty good. This is definitely early-on in their career, but it was still enjoyable.

not bad, classic paint it black but not much else

Best song was I am waiting. 5/10 everything else

classic classic rock - 1/2 meh 1/2 not bad

Favourites: under my thumb, out of time.

Det er bare 60'er rock

The album was ok. It has my favorite stomea song, Under My Thumb. I can imagine how divergent it was during its time but it still didn't speak to me.

This was a really tough one for me to rate. This album has some songs that I really like on it, but it also has some that I found pretty boring. The attitude towards women in the album is definitely not great, but I've tried to set that aside when rating other albums. I also feel like this album would sound a lot better if it was recorded today. As it is, it doesn't sound great, but there are later Stones albums that have a lot of similar sounds in them that pop a lot more on the recording. This whole recording sounds flat and muffled, and I don't know how to account for that in my grade. 3/5

Mother's Little Helper is a solid opener, very catchy. Album is pretty samey throughout though. Liked the acoustic tone in Lady Jane a lot. I was surprised at how much of a old-school country vibe some of these tracks have, with harmonica and acoustic guitar only. And at just how "light" early rock was, with a distinct lack of real lead solos. And how short the tracks are!

3 rock albums in a row...The album is fine

Ihan ok rallattelua. Ei vituta muttei myöskään koveta.

A couple classics, the rest were done well enough, just not interesting to me.

Sorry to be Americentric, but the US version, which includes Paint it Black and ditches some of the less creative tracks of this album, is way better and more mature sounding than the UK version. As it is, it feels like they're on the verge of breaking out, but not quite there. Best track: Doncha Bother Me

Tasasen hyvää ja aika moni ennen kuulemattomia biisejä. Näkisin, et tätä varten tää koko homma on

A bit monotonous

1/26 Standout Tracks: Paint It Black, Mother’s Little Helper, Lady Jane, Going Home

tis good not great, Paint it Black is a masterpiece though. 3.5/5

This is clearly the moment the Rolling Stones were ready to become the bad boys compared to the Beatles. They were releasing an album with no covers, pushing their sound forward, and hinting at the counterculture shift that was about to take over the 60s. Too bad the album itself just isn’t that great. First off, there’s the obvious issue: the misogyny. Jagger spends way too much of this album talking down to women, and it gets gross fast. “Under My Thumb” is the obvious offender, but “Think” is pretty rough too, and it definitely doesn’t stop there. Musically, I hear a lot of genres being tossed around, and there are some interesting sounds here and there, but not much really stands out. Of course, “Paint It Black” is the major exception and easily the highlight of the album. Too bad the rest couldn’t match that level. I get what the Stones were trying to do here. They wanted to sound edgier, rougher, and more dangerous than their peers. But for me, Aftermath mostly feels like an important stepping stone rather than a great album on its own.

Didn't like this album. I like a few songs of theirs, but none where on this album. The lyrics of this album were so repetitive. Not for me

Not their best

I haven't checked all the Stones albums that are on this list but this is one that could be excluded. I'm mortified at my memory of singing Under My Thumb as a kid.

Typical stones album for me. A few good songs, a bunch of blues and some just dire rubbish

Terrible

No really my groove. I might like after a certain age

☆☆ I Am Waiting

My least favourite of the albums so far. I'm not a real fan of the early Rolling Stones and this album in particular didn't do anything for me. I'm sure it is a true classic for some, but for me, I'll be avoiding it.

I don't like the Rolling Stones, most of their songs. There are some I do like. Unfortunately they were not present in this album. It started out okay, but the more I listened, the more it felt like torture listening this album during a heatwave. Going home was a song that stood out for me, mostly because I couldn't stop thinking about what kinds of drugs Mick was using while singing this, just listen to the end of the song. I will never listen to this album again. I just found out I listened to the UK version and I missed Paint it Black. That song is okay. Still giving a 2.

A few good songs and a BUNCH of filler.

Listening session: june 15th, while eating dinner Listened to before: no Thoughts: I know it’s the Rolling Stones, but I’ve never been a fan of them, and this is not even their best work so I found this album annoying Favourite tracks: Take It Or Leave It & Lady Jane

So at first it was full of sexist musical tropes of this era. Mother's little pill, oh women can't handle stress so now they are taking drugs, Under my Thumb while a classic song its really a WTF moment, and Stupid Girl MIGHT have a valid point but my from my perspective when most guys are complaining like this the woman is not stupid, they are! Then we moved into Going Home and I have no idea why that needed to be 11 minutes other than they thought they were cool enough people would just want to hear a mediocre song that went nowhere. After listening farther I think it was to try and make us appreciate the slog that came next (snooze...) I don't hate the Rolling Stones, but also I don't love them. If this is all they made I would not be listening to them anymore.

Yeah this was a pretty flat and forgettable album for me. The occasional enjoyable melody is dragged down by Jagger's slur. No big moments or highlights

Kommt lange nix.

I do not understand how anybody can compare the Stones to the Beatles and thinks "they are equally good". They are not. Until today I only knew the hits from the Stones and they are good, but a full album? Awful. (I heard the UK version, so there is not even Paint it Black which would be nice.) 2/5

My first Rolling Stones album. Had it on cassette for some reason, US version. Anyhow, shouts to the short-lived Vietnam tv show Tour of Duty for having "Paint it Black" as the theme song. The rest...

Not really my stile. Some songs were pretty nice but is not something I would listen every day.

I really enjoyed Mother’s Little Helper, the rest of the album did not follow in the same vein. I think they have much better material, unfortunately it was not included on this record.

genuinely couldn't get through it. 2 stars for paint it black

How does the same band write Paint It Black and Stupid Girl. This is a gross gross creepy album that just wasn't very fun to listen to. Would have been one star if it wasn't for paint it black

I would have rated this a 3/5 even tho most of it was boring af, simply because some songs were enjoyable but the misogynie of "under my thumb" and "stupid girl" gave me the ick.

Hmm. I'm listening to the not UK version. There's some of their classic jams on here (paint it black, under my thumb). I like lady jane. Doncha bother has some fun slide guitar. After that the album just drops off for me. Shocks me it's rated the highest on AOTY.org as imo this doesn't even come close to touching their true classics like let it bleed, exile on main street, and sticky fingers

Gimme this album as an instrumental and it's probably close to a 5. Paint it black and mother's little helper are saving graces

The US version has Paint it, Black. But this is showing the UK version, which starts with Mother's Little Helper instead. “What a drag it is getting old,” eh? More like what a drag it is living with a shitty man and being forced to raise kids. Ultimately a hilarious morality tale to put forth from a band containing Keith Richards. I'd be drugged to the gills too if I had to live the life of a 60s homemaker. I am, admittedly, very firmly on the Beatles side of the Beatles/Stones debate. Not that I don't like some Stones, but… well, this has a lot of pretty terrible songs. “Stupid Girl” suggests that this pretty banal woman is “the worst thing in this world.” Shit like that is why mother is getting her little helper. It's not the only foolishly misogynist song here: Under My Thumb continues the tradition, but at least we can argue that Under My Thumb is coherent and at least has good bones. Stupid Girl is an easy contender for worst songs ever, and certainly would put up a strong fight for “worst second track.” The US version omits four of these tracks before adding PiB, and yet continues to keep Stupid Girl in the second spot. That's the sort of choice that feels like self sabotage. Equally so is the UK version sticking 11 minutes of Going Home in the mix before even getting halfway through (the US wisely sticks this at the end of the album, so you can ignore it). Largely this is an album built around perfunctory blues, and despite their best efforts at the start it's pretty inoffensive. Among the more interesting things here? I'm partial to I Am Waiting, but that's partly due to a Lindsay Buckingham cover. The Stones original doesn't hit the same, but the skeleton is there. Past that, the highlights are the “tell me, whose fault was that, babe?” hook on Think and the arrangement on Lady Jane, and while not particularly memorable, about half of what remains on the US version could have been swapped for UK's “Take It or Leave It” Anyway, though, this is an album which wouldn't inspire anyone to listen to more Stones. It might, might creep to a low or nearly 3 with the US version with Paint It, Black and some trimmed fat, but I think there's just too much filler and too many specifically bad songs here to make it out of the 2* range even then. One iconic song simply isn't enough to justify listening to the whole album… I'd honestly probably appreciate the song LESS having heard the whole thing.

Boring asf

Tylsää

A ways down my Stones list. The hits are great but nothing else grabs me much. Not better than the worst Beatles record. Girls are stupid to be fair.

I don't care for the Rolling Stones too much, it's a shame they have such a high number of albums on this list.

🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑 (rounded down because #beatmickjaggertodeath) I wouldn't say I'm a Rolling Stones defender but when they hit it, they hit it, and I think that'll be harder to deny on some of the later albums of this list. That said, "Under My Thumb?" "Stupid Girl?" Even if they're supposed to be tongue in cheek... are they funny? Deeply rapey aura radiating off of these second-rate Kinks. Actually, I think this could've been on par with the star higher Kinks album we just heard, as it would suffer from the same "good but forgettable" feeling were it not for, you know, the rapeyness. If I were a truely moral and good person, any rapeyness would result in a reduction to, uh, zero stars, but unfortunately, perverts are allowed to write good music. Cis man opinion out 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing

I don’t think I can be a woman and rate this higher than a two. Even if the lyrics didn’t suck, it wouldn’t have scored higher than a three.

i was so bored. and why is he calling that girl stupid? >:(

It was aight kinda boring

2.5 Mostly forgettable

The aftermath of listening to this album had me rolling in fields of sheep, gently brushing the pastures, looking at the sunshine beaming over the hill. I then encountered a mystical creature which spoke in alarm sounds, then realising I slept into the next day.

The Rolling Stones really aren’t my cup of tea and it all sounds a bit samey. Won’t be relistening

Trying to listen to white, British, kids try and play soulful Rock 'n' Roll, or black-American Blues, is offensive to my ears. The main offender, 'Going Home' is like a high-school project gone wrong - painful. You can really tell this was their first album. I understand you have to start somewhere, but blimey. 2 stars for trying something new, I guess.

Hovered between a two and a three, waiting out all that misogyny and all those self-evidently pre-classic Stones workouts to see if Paint It Black (about as good as '60s rock-and-roll got, surely) might tilt me towards the three once it finally showed up. Reader, show up it did not (damned UK edition). Two it is.

it aight

No mi rollo

[Sitar intro] Jagger: You’re so dumb and ugly ☹️ [basic boogie woogie beat] [funky guitar riff] Jagger: But I’m gonna have sex with you anyway 😏 [harmonica] Jagger: Whether you want me to or not 😎 [guitar solo that’s just the riff from before repeated over and over again] Jagger: SHOO BEE DOO BEE TA LA LA [10x times until fade out]

misogynistic af

Lowkey pedestrian.

The Rolling Stones—the world's most successful and arguably most overrated rock band. I'm sorry, but I've never liked them. *Aftermath* was recorded during the Brian Jones era—the period of the band's history that appeals to me the most. Two songs on this album really struck a chord with me: "Lady Jane" and "Paint It Black." They are quite different from one another, yet both are truly excellent in their own way. I can also appreciate "Out of Time," but the rest of the album either leaves me completely cold or is downright annoying. I’m not really a "blues" fan, either, and I’ve always found that particular incarnation of the Stones absolutely repulsive. So, I’ll give the band two stars for those two genuinely good songs—plus another half-star, ideally, though that’s not an option here—so, two stars it is.

What are we meant to take away from songs like “under my thumb” and “stupid girl”? Ridiculous misogynistic album & a boring waste of time.

Honestly some of the songs sound like they wouldn’t sound out of place on a spinal tap covers album. The highs on this album are great but the lows really drag it down.

It's just kinda annoying.

That was funny this really sucked

This is a good album for a new band to listen to before listening to exile on mainstreet… to realize that early albums often kinda suck. This album kinda sucks.

Did US as it was shorter and has paint it black Not as fond of this as their later work, and when you look at what Beatles/Beach Boys were doing in 1966 this clearly pales by comparison, though I appreciate they both lean much more towards pop than Stones

Let’s repeat the same lyrics one more time.

i can see why this is good music but it gets on my nerves very quickly. not for me

Paint it black go brrrrr Stupid girl repetitive Lady Jane repetitive Inder my thumb repetitive Doncha bother me blues go but still repetative Think is ok Flight 505 eh High and dry the It's not easy ok I am waiting eh, long and repetitive Going home stfu about how tight ur girl is

kinda mid had 3 songs i liked lowkey are some creeps stupid girl 😡

Starts off kinda promising but this is just not a very interesting record

It’s been said that the music of today is all chorus no verse, with heavy repetition to accommodate short attention spans. What, then, the hell would you call this?

oops forgot to rate this 2

Not wow’ed. This is my third Rolling Stones album and I’m starting to come to the conclusion that this band just isn’t for me.

After the genius that is Paint It, Black, the rest of the album falls remarkably short to me. There is way too much repetition within the songs and nothing manages to capture the essence of what makes the first song so great. It's like two completely diffferent bands. I didn't find this album enjoyable, especially the final song, 'Going Home'. How long was his commute? 2/5 Paint It, Black 10 Stupid Girl 4 Lady Jane 3 Under My Thumb 5 Doncha Bother Me 4 Think 6 Flight 505 4 High And Dry 3 It's Not Easy 4 I Am Waiting 3 Going Home 2

Paint it Black was good. I'm surprised at how much I didn't enjoy this considering the Rolling Stones.

Even in 66, Jagger's voice was annoying. Due to studio tech, the recording is thin with a notable absense of kick and bass. Apart from Paint It Black - one of the few original tracks they wrote, this is a work of honky tonk Americana with little subtlety or individuality.

Dawg I just can’t stand Mick Jaggers voice. Nails on a chalkboard.

j'ai trouvé ça chiant #avisdivergent

Not the worst Rolling Stones album I've heard, that's for sure...but still...let me out of this cage, I'm not doing fine, etc. etc.

Best Song: Paint it, black

Wow I was really excited to hear this album as a whole since I love Paint It Black, but that ol' 60's rock strikes again.... Now there's no particularly bad songs here, but once again the vast majority of it is just background noise that just isn't memorable at all. I'm sure at the time it was probably newer and exciting, but by today's standards it's just meh...

oh dude... I am bored as hell

It's okay, but it didn't catch me. I listened to the UK version and wished I listened to the US version cause 'Paint it Black' is on it.

I too listened to the UK version. Not much that I enjoyed here, but I didn't hate it. When I think of The Rolling Stones I think of excitement, but this was quite boring.

Let It Bleed is when I really start enjoying the Stones, but there are occasional good songs on this one (“Under My Thumb” is great). Overall pretty unexciting for such a great group.

I really don’t like the pre-Mick Taylor era of The Rolling Stones at all because it reeks of chasing trends and has none of what makes them a great band.

i really disliked the first half of the album, i think its awful. but the later half was more tasteful than i expected. never been a big Rolling Stones fan, but whatever

I agree that they belong on this list, but I never was a huge fan of The Rolling Stones. I am going to rate the UK version because this is the one that I have been redirectioned to, so for me it's a 2. If it would have redirectioned me to the US version, which has Paint it Black, it would have been a 3.

Boring

i just can't wait- for this album to be done with! Would I listen again: literally no Deserves to be on this list: enough is enough 1.8

I'm surprised at how bad this Rolling Stones album is. I love the Stones. Outside of Paint It Black (or Mother's Little Helper, unclear what the actual first track is), I'm hard pressed to find an enjoyable song. The mid-back-half filler is the HIGHLIGHT. I've never liked Under My Thumb which is the other big song on here. It's Not Easy and Flight 505 are ok.

Highlights: Out of Time, Paint It Black. Note: the UK edition has three more songs (Out of Time, What To Do and Take It or Leave It) and swaps Paint It Black for Mother's Little Helper. I listened to both. To me, Aftermath is where we hear the Stones build their recognisable sound. They get creative with instruments and they use more of Keith and Mick's songs. Both editions start with a punch to the face: Paint It Black (US) and Mother's Little Helper (UK). The former a theme song for depression. The latter making it very clear that benzo addiction is not confined to the one class. After track one it gets messy. Like the Stones albums that follow, it's not flawless. The tracklist doesn't have a natural flow to it. You have blues rock songs and you have the psychedelic art rock songs. Overall: 4/10

The most overrated band of all time.

Jagger and his oversized rapey mouth can get out of my ears please and thank you. I am tired of hearing music from the 60s and 70s from men belittling women. It makes me sick. 1 star, but an extra star for Paint it Black. Death to harmonicas.

didnt feel the album much, wasnt in the mood i guess

Of course I know "paint it black", it's a classic that I've known all my life. The next song is kind of stupid, petty, and childish. It's just repeating how stupid a girl is over and over and not being clever about it at all. You can write a song about hating someone and it can be good; you can write a song about someone being stupid and it can be good, just not if you're The Rolling Stones. I am recognizing "under my thumb" a little bit which makes me want to give it a like but then it's also making me feel gross. I like "doncha bother me", I like the instrument that makes a sound after some of the lines. I don't think I've ever seen that word, doncha. This whole album kind of just feelings like men hating women. He thinks girls are stupid, should be under his thumb, and should recognize he's always right. They have their bangers, but I'm not the biggest fan of the rolling stones so far. "High and dry" is okay, but there's definitely a better High and Dry by Radiohead! All radio and no head. I want to give this a 2 I think even though it has "Paint it black"

boring

Yet another rolling stones album, and another chance to really highlight that outside of a handful of songs over their career they are a bit crap. Paint it black is a good song, though I've heard it too many times to really care now. Strange how they didn't bother to experiment with their 60s emo style any further, might have been interesting. But nope, back to some really ropey blues rock. We've definitely had a few of these songs on another stones album we've had (I assume an American one), bit of a pisstake for the list. Could this be the last stones album on the list? I really hope so.

Just monotonous. Paint It Black had it on the precipice of being a 3, but the overall weakness of the rest of the album combined with the fact that it wasn't even included on the UK album caused me to settle on a 2.

Everytime I listen to a Stones album I think less of them. Listening to this one, were they the prototype of the modern incel? Track 1 - older women and mothers are drug addicts. Track 2 - young women are vain, mean and stupid. Track 3 - is an engaged dude cheating. Track 4 - OMG, this is a woman abuser who has brainwashed his "girl" to not look at others, only speaks when spoken to, and behaves like a pet dog. And the reviewer comments "casually offensive lyrics"? Shame on the reviewer as much as on Mick and Keith. Musically it's catchy. I see the draw. But this does not age well.

I’ve always thought people could be divided by whether they like the Stones or the Beatles more. I’ve always said Beatles. This doesn’t change that.

Paint it Black and Under My Thumb are classics. The rest of it just felt like generic 60's rock/blues.

Neužkabino

Certainly not the best rolling stones album... Jeez actually sort of bad at times. A couple good songs to hold is up above copping a 1

Why is this not good at all

Paint It Black is awesome, the rest of this, not so much.

Va fan heter skiten "1001 Albums you must hear before you die" eller heter den "1001 Albums with one good single you must hear before you die" mannen kom igen.

So this record totally makes this list merely for being a foundational blues rock album. Yeah there’s hits, but given the stones other work, what’s the actual point of putting this on here? This is a prime example of why we don’t need to have half of every big bands discography on here. Overall just a boring album, maybe this was also their first record of all originals? Idk. Sure there’s hits all over, but they’ve been played to death. 1966 is stacked and this album doesn’t really push the needle for me.

ZzzZ easiest 2 probably so far. Why, what makes this so worth everyone's time? I am about halfway through this and it is just boring and uninspired I can not believe these guys have so much music. Hot take the stones are like greenday. Good at the start but far far far far far too many records tryna recapture the flame. I can’t do this. Their first original album and it shows paint it black And that’s it so many other debuts are interesting and cool this is sloppy and boring never again almost a 1 but saved by some songs

Under my thumb really sucked the vibes out of this one tbh - T

I don't know if I'll ever come to terms with early Stones material. It all seems bland to me, a whirl of lackluster songwriting and underage grooming. "Paint It, Black" points towards a certain amount of future greatness, "Out Of Time" creates a nostalgic gravitas that I appreciate -- though I prefer the version by Chris Farlowe. Listening to "Under My Thumb" is an uncomfortable task, though, and the closing track on the US version, "Goin' Home", drags on forever without any common sense.

It's fine. Hard to imagine this being subversive but 60 years ago is a long time.

well i got annoyed by the lyrics in some of the early songs but the music itself was pretty boppy, esp paint it black and going home. ngl i didn’t listen to the whole thing cuz of said annoyance. not a bad record necessarily i’m just annoyed lmaoooo.

Paint it Black as an opener… I do like this song. The Rolling Stones were a huge early concert for me in 1987 so they have a soft-spot with me. I don’t love them, but I like them. Stupid Girl is more jammy-early-Stones. Lady Jane… Jagger crooning slow, folky… no. Under My Thumb is another classic Stones, nice. Doncha Bother Me… bluesy with an annoying guitar riff - no. Think is nice. Flight 505 is 60’s Jagger riffing, High & Dry and It’s Not Easy is some bluesy country… not so much. It’s not easy sounds like 60’s progressive rock / of the day unique but a little dated. I am Waiting is weird and I don’t like it. Going Home is an 11-minute jangle that lost me in the first minute… The back half of this album I did not really like at all.

I had a soft spot for early Stones records, but not anymore.

Just boring other than Paint It Black and Under My Thumb

It's fine. It's nothing special. Minus one point for how gross Stupid Girl and Under My Thumb made me feel. I could really feel the hatred towards women in the song.

I would pay him a therapy if that means that he'll stop writing those lyrics. Also I don't understand why there is normal version of Aftermath, which I listened and have absolute masterpiece called Paint it black, and then there is UK version which is somehow a lot worse that the original and there is not Paint it black. As a music in the backround while i was cleaning pretty good. Going home is so incredibly boring and long I turned it of after three minutes. But still there's paint it black so it won't be 1*.

2/3. Some truly questionable lyricism here; Stupid Girl is terrible, and Under My Thumb is classic misogyny. I didn't realize they were so country/cowboy crazy at this time, but I enjoyed some of it. Paint It Black is a great song and justifies the rest of the album, though I did enjoy parts of the second half. Nonessential, but Paint It Black just carries it.

Not familiar with this album but know the 2 hit songs. The rest are ok. "Going Home" is way too long and I don't care much for the attempts at blues harmonica and guitar integration. Even though they broke out on this record and experimented with different instruments and genres, it's not that interesting. The Stones got too many albums and are overrated. The more I delve into their work, the more I think they just may be a greatest hits collection. It's been a while since we got one from these guys on the list. Better than the last 2 and I understand the impact this had on their careers. Still, I'll take the shorter US version with "Paint It Black." 2.40 stars.

Not their finest

Not the best rolling stones album

Biggest surprise about this album (US version) is how incredibly dated so much of it sounds. Favorite: Paint It Black Would I listen to it again: No

Album Review 069 Aftermath by The Rolling Stones (1966) Rating 2.5/5 There are two versions of Aftermath, the UK release and the US one - I’m going with the UK version here, even though it’s a weaker album (in my opinion) and omits Paint It Black which is arguably the best song across both versions of the record. Aftermath is the first album by the Stones with 100% their own material and their weaknesses and immaturity in their songwriting at this early stage in their career are clear (especially the misogyny of Under My Thumb and Stupid Girl, etc.). Whilst listening, I read a handful of reviews of Aftermath, one of which saying that Jagger/Richards were the cake and Jones was the icing (yeah a poor analogy but work with me here), but for me it’s Jones’ work that provide the highlights with the unorthodox-at-the-time instrumentation and experimentation. The rest of the album is average at best.

Okay im not a big fan of sad boys moaning to the microphone - why more of albums here are in this way

Honestly, musically underwhelming and overlong. Wears its 1960s-era misogyny on its sleeve to a nearly alarming extent. I listened to the original UK tracklist, which is missing the actual smackdown classic “Paint It Black”, but I’m not going to do this all again for a different opening song and tracklist sequencing. I know what that song sounds like and I’ve heard the rest of the album. I am aware of their more interesting music. It’s enough.

Alright album, sounds like gow I expected Paint It Black was a fun intro, I liked that song for a while now. However, not much else stuck out to me. 4.7/10

One of the earlier stones albums, not.as sufisticated as the big oned later on

Liked a few of the songs, but wasn't interested in continually listening. Kept stopping it for distractions, and then would forget I was even listening to it.

Too old for my taste

I'm not necessarily a Stones hater or anything but this is just not it yet. Maybe I'd give it 3 stars if so many of the lyrics weren't so gross. I mean maybe they're trying to do an ironic commentary thing in at least some cases but it really doesn't land. Even setting that aside—musically it's definitely no Rubber Soul, for all you can tell on certain tracks that they were trying (it really is pretty funny to take a look at the dates on the Wikipedia pages and realize that the guys got into the studio to start recording this like 5 days after that album dropped... like *2 days* after it got released in North America, which is where they were at the time... I recognize that that day was also like 3 days after they wrapped up some touring obligations/finally had a a schedule clear enough for studio time, but like, that chronology is just always going to read as the Stones hearing Rubber Soul, panicking, and booking some emergency sessions to try and push out something that could compete. lmao). It's not bad, on the whole, it's just really not very interesting to me.

Hmm - I Can see where they are headed, but they are not quite there yet. Plus, the lyrics are crazy

Didn’t realize that Meat Puppets song was a cover! Otherwise a pretty arduous album. Stones didn’t become cool until post Brian Jones.

The Stones only figured it out from Let It Bleed, then perfected it on Sticky Fingers, then did the obligatory 60s/70s double album that would have been their best album if it was a single album. That run of 3 is pretty unimpeachable, but it kind is the reason we think of them as the rock and roll force they are in popular culture. The early and mid 60s stones have muted, clean guitars, no debauchery, minimal energy. It all sounds like it's recorded in black and white somehow. Mick was finding a bit of it, but none of the band have any idea of what their iconic roles would be. Where they did get experimental, in Going Home, it didn't exactly sound authentic. Jim Morrison would do scream scatting about stupid nonsense better next year, and he didn't really do that very well. Sticky Fingers and Exile will get a 5, this gets a 2. The only person in the world the likes this over their better stuff is Wes Anderson

começa mt bem e dps perde o gás e tbm as piores letras da historia pqp

Idk, I don't care much for early stones.

Not bad, but also not something I really listen to in my own time.

Considering how famous they are, they are really, really boring.

To be honest it’s ok. Nothing much to say. Good music but nothing new or extraordinary.

Sometimes when people are empowered to put their thoughts to music...their thoughts then get put to music. I don't really like Mick Jagger's singing or what he sings about on this album. Musically, at it's best it reminds me of one of my favourite discoveries from this project The Flamin' Groovies. Perhaps I'll like their later albums better.

There are like, one or two good tunes on here when Brian Jones gets to go a bit psychedelic, but then the rest are just pure mid-60s blues filler. Jagger’s voice has never honked quite so hard, it’s actually quite annoying. Then there's the lyrics - hashtagproblematic at best, rancid and rapey at worst. A real slog. ¡No bueno!

You turn on Paint It Black, and you're absolutely sure this album is going to be a ripper. Within 30 seconds of Stupid Girl you realize you've been mistaken. The Stones/Beatles debate seems really stupid when you realize this was the type of stuff the Stones were working on when the Beatles were making Revolver. Stones didn't fully hit their stride until Let It Bleed in 69.

Spinal Tap rip off. The abundance of mysoginist lyrics is the only reason I boosted them to two stars. Aside from the occasional foot tap, it was mid at best. I'll have to hold a memory of this album for the foreseeable future... and I want to paint it black.

Now I finally know what Rolling Stones tune Neil Young took for “Borrowed Tune,” so that’s cool. Neil did it better, of course. This one really isn’t it.

maybe i should’ve listened to the uk version..

I liked this Rolling Stones album much better than the previous one but I'm starting to get really bored with '60s/'70s boy bands. I know they are iconic and did a lot of paving for new music but you can't tell me that out of ALL the albums in the world that this band deserves 2 spots (and maybe more, I'm only like 15 days in). There wasn't anything better than this?

I keep finding that Stones albums are 1-2 incredible songs and an awful lot of dross. Paint it Black is one of the greatest songs of all time. Under my thumb, despite the misogyny, is also catchy. The rest is utter filler. As an album it can just, JUST, scrape a three due to not being awful and the use of some interesting instruments in places, but it really isn't that great. In fact, I've just talked it down to a 2...

Rolling Stones still in their boy band phase

i tthing they have a lot of songs that are to repetitive in the sense of the verses and stuff and i dont really lime that cause i get tired and bored

Great start with Paint it Black! And then, 37 minutes of lame music with misogynistic lyrics and one of the worst 10 minute songs I’ve ever heard!

apart from paint in black the album is very boring, not really my cup of tea

this mfer doesn't know how to sing

Not their fault but i just can’t take this seriously. They sound like a parody of themselves

Wasn't overly impressed by this. Much prefer the stones of the later 60s and 70s. Sounds great for the time though.

The Black Dahlia’s cover of “Paint It Black” (or was it “Paint It, Black”?) rips so fucking hard. Five stars.

Aika rasittavaa vonguttelua, Under my thumbissa hyvä sovitus(marimba). Going home kovasti liian pitkä jammailu (yhdessä kohtaa vähän led zeppelinin tapaista meininkiä), Flight 505 alussa Can’t get no satisfactionin kulku

#237/1001. Going home, babe. What was this? Jagger failing to be Jim Morrison a year before the Doors album was released? Drop some of the shitty songs and jams, rethink your lyrics, put some more effort on the production and perhaps this would be a decent album. Or actually, drop the rock and roll and blues - they are at best when they experiment with sounds, instruments and songwriting. And put only the best songs from the two versions on one album so we can talk.

Great intro, not so great afterwards

A song over 10 minutes? Mother’s little helper is a strong opening song but the rest of the album drags.

Aftermath will be my final Rolling Stones album to review. The Stones' discography has been a bit of a mixed bag for me. I didn't care for their self-titled album at all, but Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers were insanely good. Unfortunately, I'm betting that this album will fall on the lower end of the spectrum for me, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. For what it's worth, I'll be reviewing the UK version of this album, and I'm already bummed that "Paint It Black" is only on the US version. Even though Aftermath started off on a strong note with “Mother’s Little Helper,” I wound up not really caring much for this album. I like when the Rolling Stones lean more heavily into blues rock, but the blues rock songs on this album weren’t that interesting or novel to me, and the songs that weren’t as blues rock-oriented, like “Lady Jane,” just made this album feel uneven. There were some nice musical elements here and there throughout this album, but my favorite Rolling Stones albums have catchy guitar hooks and riffs, but I felt like that was really missing from Aftermath. On top of that, this album just didn’t have that Mick Jagger attitude and swagger that other Rolling Stones albums tend to have. Aftermath was a bit of a chore to get through, and the eleven minute “Goin’ Home” didn’t do anything to help that. On the plus side though, the aforementioned “Mother’s Little Helper” and “Under My Thumb” are great. I’ve never really liked “Mother’s Little Helper,” mostly because of its discordant sound, but I’d also never paid attention to the lyrics before, and that sound matches the lyrics so well. I think this song is pretty genius. On “Under My Thumb,” I loved the handclaps, fuzz bass, and marimba. The overall sound of this song is really fun and unique, although the lyrics seem to lean into misogyny. Other than that, “High and Dry” and “Out of Time” were pretty good, but the rest of the album was a bit of a slog. I’m going to have to fire up Let It Bleed to rinse my ears of this one.

Not terrible but not great either. To be honest, after the first 5 songs, there was, like, nothing in this album. Everything was extremely basic and uninspired. I liked Mothers Little Helper, but outside of that, the album got repetitive very quickly and ended up feeling underwhelming. It wasn’t hard to listen to or anything. Just wasn’t interesting. 5/10

Meh, stones nooit echt gesnapt

Don’t love The Rolling Stones for whatever reason

Hey I really like that Under My Thumb song. I think I’ll buy the whole album. Oof. There isn’t one album track I’d ever want to hear again. And that, students, is the difference between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. You must own every Beatles album. You only need the Stones greatest hits.

Началось

Despite loving Paint it black, the whole album isn't interesting at all.

Well, it's the rolling stones. I feel obligated to give them a three because they are the Rolling Stones but I'm not going to do it. "Look at that stupid girrrrrrl" get bent

boring, repetitive, weirdly misogynistic

i dont like rolling stones in general

The production and sound are incredible. The unfaltering misogyny is repulsive. When even the Wikipedia introduction says “Women feature as prominent characters in their often dark, sarcastic, casually offensive lyrics,” you know it’s bad. My main concern is that The Rolling Stones are role models who end up normalizing this kind of harmful male dominance/female subordination mindset.

- paint it black on kyllä tuote mutta en tiiä sit näistä muista - pikkasen omituisia nämä naisiin liittyvät sanoitukset - ei tätä jaksa kyllä koko levyä kuunnella

Some songs were catchy but hated some of the lyrics about women. Some songs were just so annoying, wanted to skip. Highlights: Out of Time.

The leg was moving throughout this one. Nothing did in for me in particular.

Arribas muy arriba (paint it black) pero bajos muy bajos (under my thump??)

Har nu plågat mig igenom båda versionerna. Paint It, Black, shoutout GH3 (världens bästa tv-spel genom tiderna) är ju en banger och Under My Thumb är ju en bra LÅT men texten herregud haha. Gubbtrist!

Två låtar in och mer kvinnohat än 50 cent.

Stupid girls

Why on earth did they not include Paint it Black on this album in the UK? What a huge mistake. Without Paint it Black it's a 2, with Paint it Black it is a 3.

i suppose its not bad, just does nothing for me. and am i crazy or are the drums terrible on this

Like the Beatles, their super early stuff is mostly unimpressive. But strong two first tracks

This isn’t a great Rolling Stones album. However it was placed on the list for the significance that the authors had their head up their asses. Once that is realized, you learn that there’s only a very tiny fraction of the albums that you should listen to before you die that they picked.

Hate to say it but I’ve never heard a Rolling Stones song I’ve genuinely liked. Sue me!!! Paint It Black saves this from being a 1 for me. Also Stupid Girl is one of the dumbest songs I’ve ever heard.

no se, bastante aburrido para mi

Its okay. The rolling stones definitely have better albums, i dont think this would have made the list of ‘best albums’ if it didnt have their name attached to it. As a standalone album its pretty mid Also highkey sexist

Paint It, Black is the best song on the album and it wasn’t even on the UK version. Not a Stones album I’ll come back to again

tbh not for me, some songs sounded like a crazed man jamming out on his own in an abandoned garage. others were good but it was all a bit too stripped back for my usual rolling stones taste - i like seeing where they evolved from though

not exactly my vibe. a few songs hit.

Matt man, the first half of this album is just Mick Jagger saying horrible things about women. It has not aged well.

4/10 This album feels like it’s a bit of a stepping stone for The Rolling Stones. It’s the first album on which they composed all of their own songs, and there are hints towards the sound that I would personally more associate with them, of a more gritty, driven blues rock feel, particularly with songs like Under My Thumb or It’s Not Easy. But it’s also a really mixed bag of a record. They drift from more generic 60s pop-rock akin to the Beatles, the Kinks and the Who to almost folky tunes, and then some way more standard blues tracks, and it never really feels completely coherent. It’s also way too long (I listened to the UK version), particularly the arduous experience of the 11 minute Goin’ Home. If they had trimmed some of the fat here and worked to make it stylistically a bit more coherent, I might have gelled with it a bit more. Some of the stronger elements of the album were not bad, but often felt like fairly generic blues rock. Perhaps the significance is a bit lost to time for me, but it all feels a bit derivative of blues that had come before it, wrapped up in a package of edgy white boys to sell records. The production of the record is a bit all over the place too, with some tracks sounding full and balanced, and others where certain parts of the music was either way too prominent or lost to the background. The musicianship is decent enough, and there are some quality moments in the performances all round, but it’s only when they get into the more driven stuff that it all really connects together for me, particularly Jagger's voice. I’m not generally a massive fan of his vocal style, but with high energy, gritty stuff it can do a good job. Here it was exposed too often for me and that made for a more difficult listen. I came into this not being a big fan of the Stones and they haven’t done much to change that opinion with this record. Perhaps that will change with their later work. Mothers Little Helper - I’ve never really seen the comparison that’s made between the Beatles and the Stones, but here we have it. This is quite similar to the sound of the Beatles at the time, but less good, because frankly Mick Jagger is not as good a singer as any of them. It also lacks the harmonies that thicken up and give interest to the Beatles sound. It’s an ok 60s pop-rock song, and there is a bit of grit. and edge to it, but nothing much more than that. Stupid Girl - Tonally, this sounds exactly like Spinal Tap (back when they were the Thamesmen) doing Gimme Some Money. It’s more fairly run of the mill 60’s British Invasion rock stuff, but It’s a really decent song. I feel like some of the impact of this may be lost to time, because I feel like I could lump this in with a lot of music from the time and, despite it being a well written, catchy song, it doesn’t really do much to stand out. Lady Jane - This is a strangely folk edged diversion from the sound thus far. Jagger is putting on a very deliberate inflection on his vocal which is a bit weird. I mean it’s ok, but it's not particularly exciting. I suppose it’s moderately interesting due to the instrumental choices, but it’s just a bit on the dull side for me. Under My Thumb - This is much more like it. There’s enough of an edge to it that it suits Jagger’s vocal style much, much better. This sounds much more like they’re starting to find their own sound, with a blend of the more bluesy, gritty sound with an edge of the 60s Brit rock in there too. It’s got a good groove to it and the Marimba is nice too. It’s a good blend between slightly more driven sound and the lightness of that Marimba that give it a satisfying tone. Doncha Bother Me - And now we’re on to some more straightforward blues stuff. It’s a pretty good blues track and it’s got a nice bit of grit to it. It builds fairly nicely in intensity, but it is perhaps a bit on the repetitive side. Although at less than three minutes, that hardly matters. Goin' Home - This continues the bluesy vein, but to begin with it’s also got slightly more of the 60s Brit edge to it. The vibe isn’t bad, but it’s a bit on the dull side. And then it drags on. And on. And on. I don’t know why Mick Jagger is trying to filibuster his way through over 11 minutes of this record for, but he’s not very good at making it interesting or engaging. Flight 505 - More fairly generic bluesy rock with a rock and roll edge. Again, the vibe is decent, but there’s nothing particularly hooky about it, it’s just well executed bar band music. The piano and guitar are doing good work here, but it just doesn’t feel like anything that will stick with me. High And Dry - We’re chugging along with more blues here. It feels a bit more engaging, and it’s got a good groove and some nice harmonica playing, but the cymbal splashing from the drums is so, so draining. Out Of Time - Back to something that’s more akin to the other 60’s brit rock of earlier tracks. Jagger doesn’t actually have the chops to pull of some of the lines he tries to on here and it’s all a bit plodding and not that interesting and it goes on for too long. It's Not Easy - There’s a bit more to this. Stylistically it’s pretty similar to the last one, but it’s more hooky and it’s got a bit more zip to it. It feels a lot more fun and engaging. The guitar solo is great too. Much more impressed with this one. I Am Waiting - This is more folky again. It’s got a bit more pace to it than our last folk diversion, but it's quite repetitive, both musically and lyrically, and doesn’t really do anything for me. Take It Or Leave It - Another fairly pedestrian and plodding song that doesn’t have anything particularly hooky or memorable about it. It’s just not musically that interesting and the vibe is nothing particularly exciting here either. Think - Straight off the bat, there’s a bit more zip to this, and the vibe is a bit better. But other than that, I’m not finding it particularly engaging. It just doesn’t really do anything for me. What To Do - I actually know this one. It’s quite a bit more hooky and a nice, full sound, but sits in that land of decent, but fairly generic 60s stuff. It doesn’t have the grit and drive that the Stones do at their best and, while it’s got a more memorable melody to it, it’s still not the most exciting of tracks.

starts out really strong, and then kind of shit

One star for Paint It Black on the US release and one star for Mother's Little Helper on the UK release. The rest is pure dreck.

Lady Jane is rubbish.

Some notable golden oldies

In the great Beatles vs. Stone debate this album is highly relevant because the Beatles never made an album this bad. Dull, plodding, repetitive. Totally absent of joy.

Not sure if the whole album is worth being in the top 1001 records just for Under My Thumb, Paint it Black, and Mothers Little Helper. There are better Stones records than this one, but the Paint it Black is a classic for sure.

Gave this album a couple serious listens. Outside of Paint It Black and Under My Thumb, it was not doing it for me. It’s got a good sound but nothing stands out. People often say Beatles or Stones, this album has me wondering why.

Paint it black and mother’s little helper, both great. Under my thumb…great song but creepy and rapey. The rest is a snoozefest

Derivative and uninteresting. White people doing Black music with no credit. Opening track was decent. Some songs were a little sex pest-y too.

Repetitive, to an extent, both in tone and song composition, the opening tracks are fairly weak - Under My Thumb is catchy melodically but questionable lyrically (is this about controlling your partner and celebrating it?). Going Home, Flight 505, High and Dry - most of these are entirely forgettable. Maybe this needs to be listened to with the cultural context in mind but it doesn't really stand on its own. It's scraping a low 2 because it's not terrible.

A couple of great tunes (Under My Thumb, Out Of Time) in an otherwise unremarkable British ‘60s blues swamp. Going Home was a particular boring slog.

Yeah, again I'll say it - I'm just not into The Rolling Stones at all. The era is not my favourite either. Another album that doesn't contain anything great for me, certainly not at their peak here IMO. I really like Keith Richards, amazing guitarist. I think he wasted in TRS.

First problem comes with what bloody version I'm meant to listen to. I stuck with the UK version, because that's what it linked to from here, but not a great first impression - the loss of Paint it Black is particularly annoying. It wasn't really worth it, either. This one is a bit dull, nothing stands out to me. Lyrically it's uninspired, and most of the deep cuts straight-up suck. Way too long, too.

Paint it Black. Great tune. Not so sure about the rest of it. Definitely not a "put it on and let it play" kind of record. Respectfully (cause I'm a huge fan), records like this have a lot to do with the success of Greatest Hits compilations.

Not a massive fan of the Stones, but this was probably considered quite left field at the time

So fängt man ein Album an.

mick jagger is a fking weirdo. feels like he's shouting whatever into the mic, complete separation between the music and singer here... as for the rest of this album, its a basic rock sound which is expected given the year of release and so it feels stale, its no fault of the album that time has led to much better sounds and innovations within the genre, but it has made this album feel obsolete. the lyrics range from mediocre to downright bad as stated above. now as for the instrumentals themselves, i found it alright, i liked the guitar and the drums overall the production for its time was good. but again, i dont see a reason to go back to this. its the first stones album ive listened to from start to finish, but my view on these guys remains the same so far..i dont get their popularity.

I hate to admit it but this is the first Rolling Stones project I have ever listened to in full. And I even further hate to admit that I did not enjoy it all that much. It was not very exciting across the board. But I imagine it hit different in the 60s

Mother’s Little Helper is so good and the rest of the album is so…fine. And then there’s an 11 minute blues disaster that sucks and I just hate this album. It avoids the 1 star for a few bangers and that’s it.

I respect TRS but they’re not my fav. Talented but rarely choose to put them on.

Lyrically interesting - but I just found it a bit dull

This particular album wasn't really for me. I heard both the US and the UK versions. Paint it Black in the US version is a standout. There were some good ideas in the album but I don't really vibe with Jagger.

UK-versjonen.
