Reviews (page 9 of 12)
Solid Rolling Stones record, good songs throughout with a few stand-outs. I've never been the biggest fan of the Rolling Stones, but certainly don't dislike em either.
Paint It Black carries this album
Not their best, but always a few good songs.
So, I hear this as the more rebellious version of The Beatles, but I'm not sure that I like it more than the Beatles. I do get it, and I don't dislike it, but it doesn't measure up to the other music of the time for me. It is still good, and deserves a place in the top albums of all-time though! The back half of the album is also much better than the first, but I think that's because it gets away from that rebellious attitude and settles down a bit.
3.5
Typical Stones album. A couple big hits mixed with some heavy blues tracks.
Overall: Okay, LOVE the intro song. Those first few measures coming in? How powerful. What a way to start an album. You ever hear an album and think "this is good, but is probably way more powerful live?" That's the vibe I get. Favorite songs: Mother's Little Helper, Under My Thumb, High and Dry Pretty happy for the opportunity to hear classic albums that I would've never listened to. Probably wouldn't seek this album out, but it was nice to listen to while working.
One of my favorites to start and then just OK. Sorry for the lack of full review. I'll reflect on my laziness.
I found this surprisingly aggravating when I thought I'd like it. Out of time stands out for me because it could have been halved in length and just way too much chorus
This whole album is very staccato and it makes me anxious.
Outside the context of the Stones' place in music and society in 1966, in 2024 this album is just a decent blues record. A couple of songs are very musically dated, as well. The influence of "Under My Thumb" can be heard in some contemporary music. That song, "Mother's Little Helper" and the US-version track "Paint It Black" are the only real standouts.
6/10
Iconic and meh.
Some real bangers. Why wasn't paint it black on the UK version?
I always liked the beatles better. I dont know if it is the vocals by mick jagger or the jangly guitar that turns me off, but I dont like the stones that much. That said, the hits of the album are good.
Pas désagréable à écouter, mais pas le genre de rock que j'apprécie (trop "old school" à mon goût, j'imagine, on entend bien les influences du début du genre, mais je préfère ses itérations suivantes).
1/11/24
Not their best work, but not bad.
for this to be my first Rolling Stones album, it was just a little disappointing because i was a bit bored in the beginning (UK version). the tracks kind of just blend together, so there’s not really anything that stands out. the one song that i really liked initially was Going Home, but then it dragged for so long that it kind of ruined it for me (and i tend to like longer songs). there was also some questionable lyrics….but besides that out of the tracks that i did like, they were incredibly catchy and had nice melodies. i love the classic rock and blues sound. I’ll have to listen to the US version all the way through another time and rate this again. (i noticed that Paint it Black is the opener and the tracks are rearranged in a different manner, which probably makes a big difference) overall, pretty ok album.
Love the bluesy rock and roll stuff the baroque rock like Lady Jane, not so much.
Some decent tracks: Mother's Little Helper, Lady Jane, Under My Thumb, and Out Of Time. The rest weren't memorable to me.
One truly great song in Paint it Black, but found the rest of the album less than essential. An enjoyable listen, but not a must hear.
Lyrics don’t really age well. Music is pretty good, I can see the appeal
Stones - Klassiker.
This album has its highs at certain points, but the lows are super forgettable. Overall, it was an alright album but it is very dated, and ending with a mediocre 12 minute song isn’t great.
The Stones in their prime. Some nice hits on this record. Easy listen.
This album was fine. Why was "Paint it Black" on the US release but not on the UK release? *shrugs* I never really noticed (or honestly paid attention to) the influence of the Blues with The Rolling Stones until hearing this album.
This was fine. I've never been a big fan.
Sympa mais pas le meilleur des Stones à mon sens. Par contre je viens de remarquer que dans the UK version, il n'y a pas Paint it black :(
Couple good songs (mothers little helper, under my thumb) but lots or filler. I'd 2.5 it if I could.
This is fine. I was reading about how people talked about it as the best album of the year. Revolver and Blonde on Blonde both came out a couple months later.
Love the Stones. Not my favorite album but two VERY epically good classic songs.
An ok album which some cool songs, nothing Wow worthy so its mid.

Average Stones

Track 12: Take it or Leave it encapsulates how I felt about this album. I thought I would like this slower Rock & Roll but I think I listened to the album without feeling excitement about most of the songs
Classic Rock: fun-enough instrumentals that make you want to tap your foot, not much in the way of lyrical substance for me. Reminds me of the UK-era Beatles. Didn't care too much for it, but also didn't hate it. It's got a time and a place. NOTE: I liked how much Xylophone was used. That was neat. Fav Track(s): Under My Thumb
Listened to this one out loud with Kate who described it as "more country than [they] were expecting." Not sure that I took away the same conclusion, but again was underwhelmed by this one. Nothing wrong with it, but once again, not gripping.
Like the last 3 Rolling Stones album- this is a best off band
I liked the first half, felt unique enough, like the Stones starting to define their sound. But the second half started to drag, sounding really generic for the time. A good listen to though
Almost a 4
Its fine, the stones were always just fine for me
There was more going on than I expected, but I still don’t really love the stones for more than a song or two
A good record. Some really good song, and som less good.
Helt ok, groovy og litt CCR. Det likte jeg, forstår betydningen men finnes ting som dekker denne itch’en bedre.
Classy, good hits.
Better than expected. Kind of bluesy. Lots interest near the end.
Not bad, but didn't enjoy many songs
A few massive tunes for the Stones and really the album where they started to carve out their own style, but overall average album, especially given their catalog. 3.5
Pretty basic album. Like the rock, but The Rolling Stones are kinda meh
Good, but not best Stones album
I’m not entirely sure why it’s on this list. Unlike the great stones albums of the seventies this (and lots of albums in the sixties) feels disjointed and more like a random mix of singles. The best song on the album, mothers little helper, was replaced by the other classic paint it black in the US. So you’re experience would be different depending on where you are! That being said, you begin to see stones coming into their own on this album. Under my Thumb with the jaunty marimba contrasting the dark lyrics is still classic stones. There were some other fun songs on the album too, like “what to do” and “out of time” the latter though, at 5:45 got really repetitive, and while I appreciate the stones earnest love for classic blues music, I’m still not big fan of how they interpret it all the time. That being said I’m sure hearing micks distinct voice over Keith’s bluesy guitar probably sounded completely different and fresh at the time, but when you consider the amazing music that would come later, much of this music is as mid as sixties it was made in.
A couple good ones.
Good album. Great sound
There were a handful of good songs on this album, Paint it Black being the most iconic of them. This album seemed to have more "catchy" songs than most of this classic rock genre. I'm of the wrong generation to fully appreciate this album, but I'm glad I listened to it. I feel like I understand the RS a bit better now.
Some absolutely classic bangers on here, but overall there are too many tracks with sparse soundscapes and lo-fi production to make it an easy, cohesive listen. Wild that Paint it Black wasn't on the UK release! Favorite track: Under My Thumb
Not the biggest fan
Some good songs.
i dont really care about the rolling stones
In an aftermath it's not very clear why the left out paint it black on the UK release. Listened to the US release first.
Always love them, but earlier jams aren't my fave
Byrjar frábærlega og fjarar aðeins út. Classic plata og mótandi fyrir Rolling Stones og rokkstefnuna. Paint it black er arguably besta lag hljómsveitarinnar og under my thumb er ennþá meistaraverk þrátt fyrir tilraunir sumra að breyta merkingu lagsins í eitthvað cancel dæmi. Flott sound, góð plata og í raun brautryðjandi.
J'avais jamais réalisé à quel point /Under my thumb/ est sexiste. Ewww. /Mother Little Helper/ est très bien, le reste c'est des Stones très classique, pas de fulgurances particulières.
Decent
Just kinda meh
Although they have some excellent songs (Waiting on a Friend) I’m just not a big fan of the Stones. This album was a reminder of that.
Aftermath" is a classic album by The Rolling Stones, released in 1966. The UK version of the album is particularly notable for its tracklist, which differs from the US version. It marks a significant turning point in the band's career, as it showcases their evolution from a primarily blues and R&B cover band to prolific songwriters and musicians in their own right. Musical Evolution: "Aftermath" demonstrates The Rolling Stones' growth as songwriters. It features primarily original compositions by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, a departure from their earlier albums that were heavily reliant on covers. This marked the beginning of their transformation into one of the greatest rock songwriting duos in history. Diverse Sound: "Aftermath" explores a range of musical styles, from the bluesy "Mother's Little Helper" to the country-inspired "High and Dry" and "I Am Waiting." The diversity of the album showcases the band's ability to experiment and push the boundaries of their sound. Lyricism: Jagger and Richards' songwriting on this album delves into themes of love, relationships, and social commentary. Tracks like "Lady Jane" and "Out of Time" demonstrate their knack for crafting memorable and emotionally resonant lyrics. Instrumentation: The instrumental performances are strong throughout, with Brian Jones contributing a wide array of instruments, adding texture and depth to the songs. His use of the sitar on "Paint It Black" is a standout moment. Influence: "Aftermath" had a significant influence on the rock and roll genre, especially the emerging psychedelic movement of the 1960s. It's considered a landmark album in the evolution of rock music. Timeless Appeal: The music on "Aftermath" has aged remarkably well. The songs still sound fresh and relevant today, which is a testament to the enduring quality of The Rolling Stones' work. In summary, the UK version of "Aftermath" by The Rolling Stones is a pivotal album in their discography and in the history of rock music. It showcases the band's transition from cover artists to accomplished songwriters and demonstrates their ability to explore diverse musical styles. With iconic tracks and a timeless quality, it's a must-listen for any rock music enthusiast.
Not a Stones fan, but pretty good, esp. as it has Paint It, Black
Much like Off the Wall, though it contains some iconic tracks, it’s not my favourite album from the band.
2.5 rounded up. While I do love me some later Stones, this album just doesn’t compare to Blonde on Blonde or Revolver which both came also out in 1966
Overall I'm not sure I like the early Stones sound. Dripping in reverb, Mick Jagger's straining half yells. Couldn't get through Going Home, but I do like Under My Thumb.
- This one didn't really do as much for me as the other Stones ones - Solid classic rock, maybe I should listen to it again
- Under My Thumb is really good - album had its moments but mostly up and down
Derp. Deleted my notes. Paint it Black is perfection. Obviously. Everything else is fine. Aaaaand now I realized these notes aren't private. oof.
Collapses halfway through
Not the biggest stones fan
UK version felt like a slog. Too much filler and no Paint It Black.
Was good. Another album I've heard 100 times over the course of my life on the radio.
Paint it black is the best song on the album, its like not even close. Under my thumb is a fucking meme. There is a song on here that is 11 minutes long. A lot of the songs just repeat the same chorus over and over. Its not bad but its just kind of forgettable. Dirty Beatles. 4/10
As well as not being a Beatles fan, I'm not a Stones fan either. I like a bunch of their songs, but they are just kind of meh to me. This album has two great Stones songs, but the rest don't speak to me.
This album feels kinda all over the place. It also feels like the engineer just discovered stereo mixing and the bass track is meaninglessly in my left ear. All the instruments are very separated right and left. Great and mediocre songs throughout the album I feel like this could be a much better album
It was ok. The standouts (Paint It Black) are timeless, Brian Jones' experimental sounds make many tracks a little more unique. Overall though, it suffers from the Seinfeld effect, and just isnt my flavor of this era/style. It was mostly a bored listen.
Definitely more interesting than a lot of their contemporaries, it's almost proto-grunge. Still very unrefined but good
Toploader. When people just treated albums as a collection of singles. As they do again now. 5* side A 2* side B
I enjoy a couple of Stones songs but I think they are overplayed now. The rest just feels like too jangly for me. Controversial opinion maybe. But I respect their influence on rock music.
Solid
This is a nice early stones record with a few essentials on there, a unique blues rock attitude along with some novel sounding guitars and progressions
Une réussite sur le plan musicale, les mélodies coulent et on hoche la tête en rythme; paroles misogynes à la clé.
It caught me off that this cover is different than the one I'm used to, not to mention that the English version doesn't even have Paint it Black on it. A clear stepping stone to them becoming one of if not the first major rock band. Essential, but likely still doesn't get itself into my top 3 Stones albums
This is honestly just kind of mid. The hits are the hits. But, a lot of it is filler. I can see the appeal of this in 1966. But, this is before they got super creative and stopped ripping off black R&B artists.
Couple of good songs but not my favourite
Kedeligt i længden. Ret ensformigt. Mere beach rock end jeg regnede med. Paint it Black + Lady Jane +
Paint It, Black is a timeless god-damned jam. Stupid Girl I could do without. Lady Jane is tender if somewhat forgetable. Under My Thumb is another jam. Dusty recording with sprinkly marimba work lend this one some magic. Add also the simple, but groovy little bass-line. Doncha Bother Me goes into a bluesy stomp-clap like jam with a slide guitar. Not my favorite from their repository. It's Not Easy is a fine enough rock n' roll song with kind of silly subject matter: "its not easy living on your own." I'm now 9 minutes into Going Home, while I was writing an email and not hating any of it. A drawn out spacey noodle jam with Mick Jagger shouting over top is a perfect outro. Maybe not something I would go and throw on on purpose, but it's nice. All in, I'm a 3 on this one. Not a great album by any measure. A could of great songs and the rest are mostly throwaway. Going Home is the only song coming out of this that I didn't know that I actually was moved by.
Get out rock band because we about to paint it black.
Paint it Black is an all-timer, although it doesn't seem to fit very well into the rest of the album. Feels a little bit like surf rock at time, but then there are other times that have a bit of ragtime piano to them. Not really what I was expecting, as I don't listen to the Stones very often. This album was fine, not really that interesting to me though.
Paint it Black and Under my Thumb are the two songs I knew on this album and they are both great songs. Every other song didn't really stand out and just sounded like pretty generic classic rock songs. I could have really done without ever listening to Going Home, that was a bit disturbing I felt like I was being sexted non-consensually. Pretty much a perfectly average album, as 3 as it gets.
Paint it Black is a classic. Very nice of them to name track 2 after Evelyn. Under My Thumb rules. I've heard this song so many times but with nice headphones that fuzzzzzz really comes out. Also xylophone or marimba or vibraphone or whatever is great. Damn that fuzz comes back on Flight 505 right on. Ayyyy more fuzz on It's Not Easy. They should have the fuzz on every track. Overall this is just a middling album. Nothing special but has those two jams in Paint it Black and Under My Thumb.
I listened to the original UK release (so Paint It Black was missing from this release, which I love). Overall I think while the Stones had some great songs but a lot of their songwriting were quite repetitive at that time. Comparing with the Beatles' Rubber Soul which was released right before the Stones went to the studio and record Aftermath, I have to say The Beatles were much more developed in songwriting and they had lot more complex songs. Favourite song: Mother's Little Helper, Lady Jane (nice baroque pop).
As this was my first experience listening to a rolling stones LP, I had much higher hopes for this album considering how beautifully heartbreaking and hypnotic 'Paint it Black' is. But the rest of the album is nothing like this. Some decent take on some blues abd classic rock, but nothing that stood out to me to the point where I'd be listening to it again any time soon.
Not their best, not their worst. Stones, innit.
Probably really good at face value, but it’s hard not to compare this to Revolver in 1966. The Brian Jones-era Stones were definitely talented, and this is a step forward, but their post-1968 put stuff like this to shame. Glad Paint It Black made the American version of the record. Fun tidbit, when looking for a title to Revolver, Ringo suggested they tease the Stones by naming their new album “After-Geography.”
Ryan - Unexpected: Enjoyed "Going Home" [if long]. Enjoyed the Delta Blues -ish of "Doncha Bother Me"
Not that interested in the Rolling Stones deeper cuts to be honest
Generally tuneful, but elementary compared to what the Beatles were doing at the same time…Aftermath is no Revolver. (I listened to the UK version, not sure how much of a difference that makes.)
After hearing from Mother's Little Helper to Out of Time (both tracks I enjoyed) I decided to switch to the US version instead of the UK version because it seems insane to omit Paint It Black and the other tracks weren't doing much for me. Did the Brits only get PIB as a single? I am so confused. This doesn't rival what the Beatles were putting out around at the same time (Rubber Soul and Revolver are both much stronger overall) but it was still fairly enjoyable. Going Home was way too long - I don't think it did enough interesting things with its length to merit it. I'm surprised I didn't like it more but it might be a case of exposure - my parents didn't have this album growing up so I'm less familiar. Tattoo You, Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed, Hot Rocks and Exile On Main Street were my records. This one felt more dated to my ear than other Stones albums, given its reputation.
Kind of mid tbh. I question if this would be in the list we’re it not a RS album. Not bad though. Under My Thumb is great.
Aftermath is a pretty solid album. With its mix of catchy tunes and innovative sounds, it's a notable entry in their discography. The standout tracks, such as "Under My Thumb" and "Lady Jane," capture the essence of their era and demonstrate the Rolling Stones' ability to blend rock with a touch of sophistication. "Under My Thumb" is an undeniable highlight, boasting a memorable riff and Jagger's great vocals. The song's playful lyrics and infectious rhythm make it a quintessential track of the Rolling Stone. Similarly, "Lady Jane" exhibits the band's willingness to venture into new musical territories, featuring a bit of a folk inspired sound and showcasing Jagger's more delicate vocal delivery. However, Aftermath has its ups and downs. While the high points are undeniably strong, there are a few tracks that suffer from repetition and lack of depth. Songs like "Flight 505" and "I Am Waiting" have their moments, but tend to overstay their welcome with extended instrumental sections that don't contribute meaningfully to the overall listening of the album. This repetitiveness can make these tracks feel somewhat monotonous, detracting from the overall flow. Not unbearable in any way, but not as great as other tracks. Despite these shortcomings, Aftermath remains an solid album in the Rolling Stones' catalogue. It showcases the band's willingness to experiment with different musical styles while staying true to their rock roots. 7/10
I listened to the wrong version and it was mid af but I understand the importance of this band and the album to rock history so I’ll refrain from being a hater
Very definitely rolling stones, not my cuppa
Identifying The Rolling Stones : it’s The Rolling Stones
This is from the era where the US and the UK versions of the same album not only had a different track order but an entirely different track listing. If it's different songs and a different album cover and released at a different time, is it even the same album? I assume based on our author that this list entry is the UK version. A good album! I've always liked the Stones without really getting why they were as big as they were. 60s rock! Great! Sounds like other 60s rock! Maybe people just like Mick Jagger because he looks like a human blow up doll
Really didn't need that 11 minute song in the middle.
Earlier Stones albums apparently had a lot of different sounds going on with their songs, which was unexpected but pleasant to see. Flight 505 had some ragtime running through it, High and Dry had the vibe of a folky bar number you'd play off a jukebox, and Out of Time even incorporated a bit of a doo wop. As a record, I liked those aspects of it, and also liked more of the quieter numbers on the album which I thought showed the range of the band well. Songs like Under My Thumb had a groovy bluesy feel to it (although with a bit of eyebrow raising lyrics to it), while Lady Jane was a wonderful little acoustic number. I felt a lot of the second half started to blend together sonically, and I thought Going Home was much too long, it dragged on for more than half of the song's runtime. So I enjoyed a good part of this, but found it inconsistent.
Pretty good, if you don't listen to the lyrics.
Yeah its ok. Early bluesy RS but its difficult not to raise an eyebrow at lyrics of Stupid Girl and Under My Thumb.
Cool
Some interesting stuff in there. 'Under My Thumb' and that trippy freestyle section from 'Goin' Home' stood out for me.
🫡 7/10
I've never really liked the stones and this album did not change my mind about them.
It isn't Revolver or Pet Sounds. But it isn't terrible either, Under My Thumb is wonderful and stands out from everything else here
OK, so this is a bit funny. I had never heard of this album, and honestly, when I looked at the track listing, I thought it was some early greatest hits record. LOL! Now all that said, there are three totally classic tracks on this record, and the rest isn't anything special. There are MANY great Rolling Stones records. This one isn't bad, but I don't see how it is an album everyone should hear before they die... I mean, for sure Let It Bleed and Beggars Banquet are much better records than this one.
De afspeellijst begon met Paint it Black, een heerlijk nummer. Maar daarna kon het me niet meer grijpen en werd het wat saai zelfs.
i like it
vasattı
There is like 3 songs missing on the UK version from the US version and it had to be the outro song of Full Metal Jacket (1987) 😢 7,5/10
It was literally just okay. Paint it Black was the only song I remember and enjoy.
Quería que me guste más.
Preferred sticky fingers
It’s ok. Nothing standout. 3/5
Not their best songwriting. Has some decent songs, but it all sounds a bit flat
It's ok but ther's some rolling stones I prefer over this
This was certainly one of the albums
Not their most outstanding
its somewhat odd since the first few songs are just pop-y songs that are catchy and more high tempo and then the rest of the album is just blue rock like music which is nice but it really makes the album a 2 parter
A couple of good good songs, but then the album goes downhill and you don’t know when it’s going to finish. I know this is one of the first Stones albums, but think they should have cut like 5 songs here. Again, the good songs here (Mother’s little helper, under my thumb, etc.) are really good, but the filler is massive, specially on the second half. Love the stones, but need to be fair with this record.
I have always had such a tough time connecting with The Rolling Stones and this album hasn’t changed that.
This is from the time when an album was the singles plus B-sides and other filler. As one would expect, it has a couple of great songs and lots of filler. Most of the filler is not too bad. Favorite song: Under My Thumb
Really interesting. You can almost hear the band coalescing around a sound to go forward with here. Lots of different styles and I enjoyed listening to it. It's unlikely to feature too regularly on my playlist but I'd certainly think about listening to it again. 3.5 but down to 3.
Decent
Lady Jane sparks the sounds of Boston, More Than a Feeling. Have to say, personally I was never a Tones fan, just the odd random track I liked... but this album actually surprised me, I liked it, I loved the acoustic, electric guitar arrangements. There are a few misses on the album, but overall, was a listenable album that you would actually choose to play.
Stupid Girl has not aged well. Some bangers on here though.
This album just didn't blow me away. I'm used to better from them.
Real good stuff
Some classics, pretty misogynistic in places!
Pretty solid album. Really liked High and Dry.
3 1/2, and I'm rounding down.
I liked it ok, I did learn some of the songs to play on my electric guitar many years ago. 3 stars
Not really my thing but not bad
3/5
other than a few songs, i really didn’t care to much for this album. it was mostly filler, in my opinion. highlights: “paint it, black”, “under my thumb”, “think”.
The album opens up with one of the most classic examples of 60’s Stones with Paint It Black and a few songs later is another, Under My Thumb. Two of my favorite Stones’ songs ever. There are a few other fun songs but also some that didn’t really resonate that much with me. Nothing bad but not as many Must Listens, either besides the aforementioned PIB and UMT. The final song is called Going Home and I can hear Gloria by Them, some Doors, the Pixies’ Gigantic, and the Thong Song of all things in this track. I’m sure there’s more that we’re influenced in a way by this one but it was a bit too long and meandering for my tastes. Solid but not my favorite Stones’ album.
Standard Stones
I liked this album, and they’re obviously influential, but I think it’s far from their best work…. Controversially, I am starting to feel like this list should really restrict itself to one or two albums from each artist. And if more, they have to be notably different from each other and distinct in the influence they have had. This does not meet that criteria.
Wow, lyrics are light years ahead of the actual music, with a couple of exceptions. Somehow, I've heard all the songs but never actually listened to the whole album. When you compare this album to the competitors released the same year, it just sounds unimaginative, but the lyrics, good god.
aight
already listened, but a good one
Kinda boring. Pick up the pace, Charlie!
I dont know its fine. Probably high 2s 3/5
I like the new instruments used. “Under My Thumb”
Highlight: Going Home 3,5/5
Daj kamienia! No ale może nie konkretnie tego :(
Listened to the UK version, as I believe that was the intended album for this list. That means no Paint It Back, sadly. Overall, this was better than the other Rolling Stones album I got so far, but it definitely uses the best material early on, with it never really recovering from the needless eleven minute song. I could see why one would like this, but it still feels like it's set in its ways as to what rock was in the era, rather than evolving anything. I've gotta be missing something, I'm sure, but it does only confirm more for me that the Beatles vs. Rolling Stones argument makes no sense in a modern lense. Totally different things going on here, in my eyes.
Ignoring the nasty misogyny, there's some fantastic songs here. I wouldn't blame you if you turn off a couple of tracks in though
Not bad. Under My Thumb and Paint It, Black are of course bangers. A few other interesting tracks but a lot of filler IMO
I always called myself a Rolling Stones not Beatles kinda person, but that based only on songs I’d heard on oldies and classic rock radio stations. Now that I’ve heard a whole Rolling Stones album I understand.
Not quite prime Stones. Paint it Black slams. Going Home is a sign of things to come. A predecessor to Midnight Rambler. Still lots of filler. They won't hit their peak for a few years yet. Hot take. A Canadian band called Streetheart does a much superior version of Under My Thumb.
Some well known and good songs (albeit awfully misogynistic!): Mother's little helper, lady Jane, Under my thumb, out of time. A few blues influenced songs, but not quite dated. Some time to go before Let It Bleed etc.
Meh, not my vibe
i am yet to be blown away by the stones
Not my thing
It's OK. Mostly just not into the style outside of a couple of songs
It's probably the best I've listened to from this time period. Which is still mid
UK Version on Spotify what a drag it is getting old. "Mother's Little Helper" is a 10. Great song. "Stupid Girl" is not. It's like, a 2. "Sweet Lady Jane". Not their best. a 6, by Stones standards "Under My Thumb"-despite being sexist as fuck, it's a 10. Brian Jones and the marimba hook. Yes "Doncha Bother Me"-despite it's unoriginality, a winner. Great Elmore James inspired slide guitar hook. 7 "I'm Going Home"-i dont remember this song much, but it's fine. a 6. "Flight 505"-dont remember this either. mick's vocal is mixed low, but that's cool. This isn't anything groundbreaking...or memorable a chooglin track called "High and Dry". It rambles. I already forgot how it goes though. 6 "Out of Time". Now that's a song. One of their tastiest choruses. a 10 "It's Not Easy" does it's job. prpbably filler, but decent filler. 5 "I Am Waiting"-Rushmore soundtrack. That's how i came to this song. Maybe that is why I love it. fucking Wes Anderson. It is an 8 "Take It Or Leave It". sounds like they trying to write a Herman's Hermits pop song. "Think"-not the song Aretha does. It's fine. a 6 This album is a 6, though it contains 4 of their best songs, and one of their stupidest. 3 stars.
it's not bad
Pleasant album! Weird fucking lyrics sometimes but melody wise good stuff. Saved tracks: Mother’s Little Helper, Under My Thumb, Out Of Time, It’a Not Easy, Take It Or Leave It
Eh i dont think its aged that well why does he hate women
Never listened to this one! Kinda reminds me of Spinal Tap - Gimme Some Money. Got that really goofy scrawny white guy singing exaggerated blues vibe. Honestly a bit cringy...
Classic rock album Starts strong but begins to wain Outside of paint it black, it's not their best work An average album in general
I'll start by saying that I do like the Rolling Stones, but I have a lot of bones to pick here. Aside from Mother's Little Helper, Under My Thumb, Out of Time and I Am Waiting, we're just left with generic bluesy songs I could find anywhere. The Stones still remain for me a band with some REALLY good songs, but their albums are weak and this album made me pissed at any Stones / Beatles comparison that has ever been made. The Beatles are perfection, the Stones are generic blues. Also is there any reason that Going Home needed to be over 10 minutes long? And maybe the girl isn't stupid Mick. Maybe you're the problem.
A more varied sound than I was expecting! I liked 'Lady Jane' but of course 'Paint It Black has to be the top pick.
Yeah. Enjoyable. Paint it Black is an undeniable classic. Still don’t get the appeal of Mick Jagger but hey, I’m just one person.
Sounds like they put a bunch of cutting room floor garbage on this album.
Decent songs, some gritty lyrics. Have always preferred the Beatles, sorry D:
I'm a big Stones fan but I prefer the material beginning from Beggar's Banquet on. This is probably the best record prior to that era, but in my opinion, it doesn't meet the quality of that amazing string of records from Beggar's to Tattoo You. The lyrical themes are somewhat cringe-worthy at times. "Stupid Girl", for example. "Under My Thumb" is great musically, but the lyrics are creepy. 3 stars.
i used to love the rolling stones so much now i don’t know a lot of this seems pretty weak
Listens: 2 Enjoyed: yeah A nice chilled listen but didn't really stand out for me. I wouldn't skip it in future but don't think I'll race back to queuing it up
While Paint it Black is such an outstanding song and the Stones always deliver with good music and great vibes, points definitely need to be deducted for how poorly this album's lyrics have aged and their misogynistic views on women
This album is all over the place. Paint it Black is one of their best, then they’re misogynists, then they write a love song. Such a roller coaster
Rock.
Pretty average for a Stone's album Prefer Sticky fingers
Pleasantly surprised as not a fan but enjoyed this classic 60s sound.
At first listen I have enjoyed this album, despite never really being a fan of the band. Some brilliant repetitive Pop/Rock songs on the album and for that reason I will return to it for a second, third and maybe more plays.
This album further cements my feelings that the Stones write amazing singles that sit between filler. And a great single does not mean a great album
Pretty good. The hits are really good and the other songs are fine.
booooooooooo rolling stones boooooooooo
Only was able to listen to a few songs.
Paint it, Black - nice left right mixing, arabic like guitar works well with the drums, drums sound good. Singing is decent. 7.5/10 Stupid Girl - beginning fill 👌, classic older song, not piano idk what instrument the backing chords sound 😩, rest of the song seems average little repetitive. ooh little fill at like 2:00 raised it half. 4.5/10 Lady Jane - singing sounds below average but it really fits the instrumental so kinda peak, still not my kind of music, too slow. 1/10 Under My Thumb - Marimba, drum intro peak, singing 😩, sounds peak. ooo that guitar doing things to me, very groovy. 8/10 Doncha Bother Me - beginning feels like it’s building to something big, falls a little flat for me but it’s still alright ig. idk i get why someone may like it but not my kind of song. 3/10 Think - song is very groovy, beginning kinda went hard. very enjoyable and nice to listen to. 5.5/10 Flight 505 - love me a bit of piano, seems like a bar song, love it love it, guitar, some sort of bass being groovy, goes hardddd. 8.5/10 High and Dry - goofy ah instruments, kinda works tho 👀👀. bop along to song so far, not spectacular, harmonica solo +.5. 4/10 It’s Not Easy - another bop along song, a little better than high and dry tho, funky guitar, love that, solo kinda cold, ended abruptly i feel. 3.5/10 I Am Waiting - oh god, it sure is a song huh. where did this come from? 1:15 saving grace, actually a decent song tf, unfortunate the first minute is so dead. 3/10 Going Home - beginning sounds odd, 11 MINUTES???? does this song deserve that much time let’s find out. just the same thing so far for two minutes with a bit of pizzazz everyone once in a while. i mean the song is okay, maybe a 4 or a 5 but it’s like 12 minutes. still 2 minutes left, if it wasn’t 12 minutes maybe like a 6-7 actually, but like now it’s a 3.5/10
I guess we start this one with the question, "Which version, the one from the UK or the one from the US?" When it comes to the Beatles, the answer's easy: the UK version is gospel. But it appears that the US version takes precedence here, as it's the one on both Spotify and the Rolling Stones' YouTube channel. (Is this regional? No idea.) This means three fewer tracks, including the loss of "Mother's Little Helper," but we get "Paint It Black" in exchange, so that feels like a fair trade. Regardless of the version, this album has two all-time great Stones songs ("Under My Thumb" and "Paint It Black" or "Mother's Little Helper"), while the rest are decent but not particularly mind-blowing. This might get a 3.5-star rating if it were possible, but I can't give it a four, so three it is. (Also, we've been doing this for 158 days now, and this is the first Stones album? I know it's random, but dang, that's a long time. And I'm STILL waiting for AC/DC and Led Zeppelin to make an appearance. Gimme!)
Always have time for some Rolling Stones
Sounds very much of the era, still me standout tracks though
Good early Album with a few known songs
Nothing terrible. Very UK classic rock feels before they became a mega band. Not much besides a song or two really stuck out.
The first four songs of this album (UK version) are a virtual tour of 60s musical tropes - sitars, harpsichords, songs of suburban drug dependency, stilted lyrics evoking courtly love; and, sigh, a striking degree of resentment and anger toward women. It’s kind of depressing, really, to listen with new ears to songs you’ve enjoyed for decades (though I suppose “Under My Thumb” was never very subtle about it). The rest of the album - new to me (my Stones’ fandom is wide but not deep) - is a collection of tepid or uninspiring blues numbers, plus some a few lesser-known, passable originals that bear the distinctive Rolling Stones sound. The hits - Mother’s Little Helper, Under My Thumb, Out of Time - carry the album and earn it the 3 stars. The rest for me is take or leave.
Sofistikerad 60-tals rock. Skulle idag antagligen kategoriseras som pop, till viss del? Saknar djup på en del av låtarna. Micks röst är gnällig. Härligt ändå på något sätt.
2 fantastic songs (Paint it Black/Under My Thumb), backed up by some standard bluesy rock. if it wasn't for the 2 standout tracks this would rate so so so much lower. 3
3.25
The two smash hits are great. There is a decent amount of filler on this album though. Favorite track: Paint it Black
Perus rollareita ja kuullostaa aika pitkälti siltä miltä rollarit kuullostaa
3/11, 27%
Going between a 3 and 4 on this one. A couple of outstanding tracks and a bunch more average ones that I could take or leave. Under My Thumb was already great, and then I realized that I’d never caught the marimba…holy cow, incredible! I just need some more standout songs than this has.
Good
73/100: Incredibly disappointed with this album. They should rename it to "Paint It Black and Assorted Sexist Songs." You can go ahead and call me a snowflake, but this album gets pretty egregious. Perhaps I'm missing the point of some songs, but "Stupid Girl" is heinous and "Under My Thumb" is arguably just as bad. I guess I shouldn't be surprised about the content of this album though. The Rolling Stones' bassist, Bill Wyman notoriously "dated" (read: raped) a 13 year old girl before he eventually married her. He was 47. Now, normally, for better or for worse—although I tend to dislike this trait of mine and consider it a bad quality—I can abide by the dismissive phrase "separate the art from the artist," but it's hard to do that when the content of their art is what you're trying to dismiss in the first place. "Paint it Black" is a great song, The Rolling Stones are a great band, but this album is apparently an uncomfortable look into their dysfunctional personas. I'd prefer to ignore this album if I'm going to try to continue to appreciate the music this band has produced.
I see why people like it, but not really my thing. Definitely old rock. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it, but I wouldn't be upset if someone was playing it.
Solid. Good rock
Not as many highs as I'd expect, but the lows aren't very low. Paint It, Black and I Am Waiting are standouts that raise my opinion on the album. Also, Going Home is a good song to end an album. Overall pretty average.
Classic
I like this record though probably not my favourite Stones album. I’m listening to the UK release so no Paint It Black (which is an absolute banger). Their first album full of originals. To me there are songs that sound similar to other artists of the time which isn’t a bad thing, they’re just on the journey to full blown Stones. Going Home is too long. Stupid Girl and Under My Thumb are on the misogynistic side which can’t be ignored but as songs they’re really good. Highlights: Mother’s Little Helper, Stupid Girl, Under My Thumb, Out Of Time
Some incredible songs but not an album I ever see myself listening to in full again
I'm just not a Stones guy I guess. Outside of Paint It Black (which isn't on the UK version pictured but the Apple Music link took me to the US version) there's not much here that I would come back to. I'd much rather listen to Rubber Soul or Revolver than revisit this.
Excellent
A classic but not much more, 3/5 Highlight- "Under My Thumb"
There are a couple of different versions of this on Spotify - the one it linked me to was the British release, which was 10-15 minutes longer and didn't start with Paint It, Black (which is a real loss). The start of the British version of the album sounds very different to the rest, if it wasn't for Jagger's voice being pretty distinctive it could quite easily have been a Kinks track. Quickly slips back into more American sounding folky rock, which is not unpleasant but not outstanding either. Gets a three, not close to getting a 4 but comfortably above a 2.
this project has allowed me to truly hear the blues' presence within the stones' music. this album is no exception. the harmonica and unrefined sound helps that. their blues sound even comes off as experimental, like in "high and dry." the album is rather dark in its lyrics. out of all the songs, the subject matter of "mother's little helper" grabbed me. obviously that sort of thing was happening in the sixties but i was surprised to hear such in depth lyrics describing this story. the rest of the songs are, well, not very complimentary towards women, but i have to trust jagger that it's done more tongue-in-cheek. there's no denying the catchiness of their hits, though. the uniqueness and variety of the instruments struck me. the sitar was rather popular in the late sixties, but its presence on "paint it black" could be its most famous instance in western culture. "under my thumb" contains the marimba--so soft i missed it before. the fuzz bass was an instrument that i don't believe i've heard before and it provided a unique sound.
Good but not great
Paint it Black is my favorite Stones song. Other than Under My Thumb, this album is pretty mediocre.
Feels very of its time, which is both a good and bad thing.
Just the stones
just ok
Not a great album, but perhaps a hint of greater things to come. Favorites were Under my Thumb and Out of Time. The first 15 seconds of Out of Time sound like Banjo Kazooie music
But do they mean the UK version (as featured in the photo) or the US version? Either way, it's ok but The Beatles released 'Revolver' in 1966
Good, but not great.
Early Stones with heavy blues influence. A lot of tounge in cheek digs at society of the times, just as sharp today as then.
Had er precies meer van verwacht. 'paint it black' is natuurlijk een klassieker
Listened to US version as it has Paint it Black on it. This song helps the album a lot in my opinion. Not many other stand outs but pretty solid album overall, if quite repetitive.
Like Hard Days Night, this is a big step, an album of all original music. Like that, they're not amazing yet. Jack Nitsche lifts a lot of average to good material up with the production though. Some great tracks on here, if you're willing to ignore an uncomfortable attitude towards women on a lot of songs.
I like the typical 1960’s sparse sound and the overuse of “stereo”.
It has a very sparse sound with heavy use of the stereo sound. The Stones have never been one of my favorites.
3/5 good but not enough
The most overrated band in the universe.
A brilliant start, but it never comes close to returning to the heights of “Paint it Black.” Too much misogyny and not enough blues or passion.
A mixed bag. The hits (Paint It Black and Under My Thumb) are clear standouts. And there are some other strong, interesting entries - Lady Gray appeals to me, and Think gives some great classic RS guitar licks. But the weak songs in this album feel sophomoric & are easily dismissed.
How is the best Stones song (Paint it Black) on the most meh Stones album?
I thought about giving this a four because it has two of my favorite stones songs. But the rest of the album is pretty forgettable
I really liked Paint It Black and Under My Thumb. The rest is mostly OK. I know rock stars were gods in 1966, but WTF is with Stupid Girl. It’s a pompous, bore of a song.
Considero que el álbum es bueno, tiene algunas canciones buenas pero no lo marcaría como mi favorito de Rolling Stones o de su mejor producción. No sobresalta mucho.
Paint It Black is about as perfect as it gets for an opening track. I like the stones, it’s an enjoyable listen for the most part. But there is quite a lot of cringey misogyny that hasn’t aged well at all. The classics are classic for a reason, and the rest is reduced to disappointing filler as time marches on.
On sent qu'ils commencent à choper le truc
Bom.
It's just another Rolling Stones album.
Love the jangly guitar on Mother's Little Helper. Unfortunately for me, the rest of the album doesn't move me much. It's all done very well but a lot of it went by without much notice for me.
Under My Thumb and Flight 505 are the standouts for me. Perfectly acceptable Rolling Stones.
Detta var bättre än jag förväntade mig. även om det kändes som ett oändligt långt album till slut.
I love the stones but this is a bit jangly… also not a fan of the hillbilly faux American accent on jagger. The singles are fantastic though!
Classic rock is classic, but this seemed a bit less evolved than most. Downrating it by one star because the UK version inexplicably left off Paint It Black.
"Paint It Black" is obviously a banger. "Stupid Girl" is hilariously bad as a follow up. Rest was fine.
A classic Stones album. Paint it Black and Under My Thumb are great tunes and hold up well. Stupid Girl is really bad though.
Some classics, pretty misogynistic in places!
surprisingly not very good outside of paint it black
Clasisc stones, paint it black, under my thumb. Listened to this whislt watching the movie bucket list with my ma, top evening
aftermeh
US version with Paint it Black, but I'd probably give the same rating to the UK version. Hard to rate because there's some truly great garage rock and bluesy songs on here with some genuinely interesting instrumentation, and also some of the nastiest misogyny I've encountered on this journey. It probably deserves a strong 4 on musical merit and a 1 for Mick being (at best) a pissy little emotional abuser who was mad that his girlfriend wasn't choking him the way Brian Jones' girlfriend was.
No where near as good as Exile on Main St. Also left my phone in an uber while listening to this album which may have contributed to my ill feelings.
5/10 some bangers but a lot of really boring, grating, and uncomfortable moments. I like the Stones sometimes but as an album this has aged incredibly poorly.
Extremely mediocre save for Paint it Black. 6/10
Paint it black was the best song and was only on the US version. Overall was decent?
I would say this is the first classic Stones record, and there's a lot of good stuff on here (especially on the US version with the iconic Paint It Black) Unfortunately things are a bit samey and uninspired in places and the band still feel like they're finding their voice, but it's so nearly there at this stage
Not a big Rolling Stones fan. Paint it Black is great, the rest smacks of songs they've heard and are badly ripping off.
Músicas favoritas: Paint it, black; Under my thumb; flight 505
At this time, the Rolling Stones were almost as big as the Beatles, but whereas the Beatles were hitting strides with outstanding albums one after the other, the Stones only had hit singles, while their albums were clearly lacking. That was until this album came out. Although I don't think it could compete with the masterpiece of Rubber Soul, it did establish the Stones as chief songwriters who could come up with more than two good songs at a time. This album definitely marks a shift from their pure blues rock of previous efforts, this time focusing more on a softer pop sound reminiscent of other British Invasion acts at the time. Some show signs of psychedelic pop ("Mother's Little Helper" and "Lady Jane") clearly pressured by the success of Rubber Soul, and would point to where they would take their next two albums. Still, they're heavily rooted in blues and not afraid to show it in these songs. This is one of the most heated debates over whether the US version or UK version is better. The US version has "Paint it Black," one of the best songs in their discography. It also cuts some of the softer tracks, putting more emphasis on the blues-rock elements. It also reorders the tracks, most notably the 11 minute "Going Away" pushed to the back. Honestly I like the UK version better just because I like the softer tracks. But regardless of what version you pick, both has "Under My Thumb," one of my favorite pre-Beggars song. Amazing use of fuzz bass and marimba, I love the solo bridge. Their strongest effort at that point, but still lots of things I'm not a fan of. "Going Home" is a bit boring at times. Not a fan of "Fight 505" or "High and Dry." I complimented the songwriting, but sometimes they repeat a hook in the chorus a hundred times in a song and it's just so annoying, just listen to "Out of Time" or "It's Not Easy." It's most annoying in "Stupid Girl" with the hook but at least there's a lot more to the verses. Also, their production is a bit dated, but I believe they catch up in the next album. Favorite songs: Mother's Little Helper, Lady Jane, Under my Thumb, Out of Time, I am Waiting
It was okay, but I wasn't really into it. Under My Thumb is a pretty song but the lyrics are so misogynistic. Paint It Black was probably my favorite. 2.5
I combined the US and UK versions because the UK version somehow left off Paint It Black which was leaps and bounds ahead of their other writing at this point. The rest of the album, "meh."
The sound is very open and reflects the four track equipment they were using at the time. It's rawness and energy is very appealing. The lyrics on Mothers Little Helper are very apposite.
Klassisk bluesrock, 60’er, fængende, Mick Jagger
Some absolutely killer tracks but still some filler here and there. The band is growing and starting to write truly timeless tunes but it's not quite there yet.
Interesting but not amazing. Surprised to hear the original “out of time” on here, didn’t realise it was the Rolling Stones.
I got the importance of this album for the music industry and, reading the Wikipedia, I also understood the importance of it in Stones' history. Even noting these things, I didn't enjoy too much this album. I like this "blues" side of the band, but a whole album of blues is not what I was expecting from Rolling Stones. For me, it was a very good opportunity to discover some new songs of this great band, even without like the whole album.
The start of something special. Not my favorite stones album
Not their best album. At this stage in their career you can see that the Stones don’t have the songwriting level of the Beatles but there is some good tunes on this one.
It was alright, I just can't get too excited about the stones. Don't know why?
Some great tracks but a whole load more generic ones that aren't
The replacement of Mother's Little Helper with Paint It Black (and removal of a few other tracks) for the US edition raises questions for me about "what is an album?" A bunch of songs thrown together, or a creative work? Do the track listing amendments make it a different album? Anyway, enjoyed listening to the UK edition, but missed Paint It Black.

British version is alright. American version is shorter and has Paint It Black, one of the greatest Stones songs. 6/10
Mother's Little Helper - 5/5 Stupid Girl - 1/5 Very whiplash opening tracks But the rest of the album was too calm for me
listened to this with steven! good times. fun album. don't remember too much, but remember enjoying it but not loving it.
Classic stones, songs like paint it black. Etc. Not quite my favorite music, but has its place
Classic Stones. I enjoyed listening to the album. 3*
Still not really doing anything for me. Songs like Under My Thumb are OK on the other hand, Lady Jane.... Middling rating.
Other than paint it black I'm not a big fan of this album.
The Rolling Stones' fourth UK & sixth US rock album is considered an artistic breakthrough for the band because it's composed of all new compositions and new interesting instruments. The album was immediately popular and is now considered a classic, as well as has been certified platinum. I loved this album of classic rock and will enjoy listening to more music from The Rolling Stones.
Brian Jones is goated.
