Reviews (page 9 of 13)
A couple of classics, a lot of standard 12 bar blues and some godawful stereo production putting instruments in each ear (drums only on the left? What were they thinking of). I get they were influential and this is part of their journey but I'm not sure it's a classic.
Pretty good but like the other rolling stones album I've listened to on this list a lot of the songs feel quite repetitive. Low 3.
Starts off really strong
it was good , like classic rock
I was excited to see this one start off with "Paint it Black". That is one of my favorite songs since the old Twisted Metal days (yes I know it was around like 40 years earlier too) but it wasn't until that game that I really appreciated the darkness of it. Then the album jumps right into other genres and kind of takes the weight of the darkness away with some lighter songs. Kind of like if an Soggy Bottom boys track comes up on a Sabbath album. Not really comparing the Stones to Sabbath, but that particular song is just out of place for the rest, and to my disappointment. Overall it is a fine album, probably a little better than sticky fingers for me, but still I'm more of a greatest hits Stones fan. Favorite track "Paint it Black" 3/5
Overall, I am no longer comfortable with how much I used to like the Stones. I can see their importance of these records in their time, and I enjoy the newer stuff still... but man I'm glad rock and roll has moved beyond what this is.
Good, but not amazing. Two chart toppers & a couple of good B-Sides, that's about it.
Not their best. Stones Bangers of course, the rest was dated and not at all special.
Not my favourite stones, but pretty good all the same.
Meh, a bit underwhelming. 2.5/5
Rolling Stones Under my thumb is cool. Going home was my favorite a bit long but cool that it stays on a groove for a while. Don’t like stupid girl or lady Jane Out of time is kinda nice 60’s pop tune but too long The marimba is kinda of a nice touch. I feel like maybe the stones are overrated or I want to like it more than I do.
Are the stones mid?? This project has made me realize I don’t like the stones as much as I thought Under my thumb is cool but I prefer the live version from still life Really hated lady Jane I think they are actually a pretty bad band that managed to make a few great sounding records
pretty by the numbers early 'Stones
Het album natuurlijk van Paint It, Black en Under My Thumb.
Outside of a few songs this is not that good. I’ll never understand the world wide obsession with this mediocre band.
Outside of the few enduring hits it is pretty middle of the road.
Stones were the Foo Fighters of their time, the singles are good to great but you’d have to shut your brain off to get through anything else.
Rating: 5.5/10 Would be a two-star album without Under My Thumb and Paint It Black, the rest of it is not that interesting.
Bit boring from a band with far better songs than these
A Stones album that is almost entirety devoid of bangers is weird, but it's still fine
It doesn't measure up to some of their later albums, still pretty good though.
Couple of good songs, overall not their best work. Not sure what the hell they were doing on some of these tracks.
UK vs US version.
After I listened to the complete album it seemed that the interesting innovative songs were all on the front half of the album and all of the more boring traditional Rolling Stones blues in the back half. I enjoyed the instrumental and songwriting explorations of "Paint it Black", and "Lady Jane". Doesn't feel as groundbreaking or essential as an album from The Beatles, particularly Revolver which came out the same year, but it did show that The Rolling Stones weren't only capable of Rhythm and Blues and could stretch a bit more. "Going Home" could have been trimmed without sacrificing the essential. All in all a few high spots here and there but ultimately a middling album, particularly knowing what kinds of things they will go to record later.
I...I get it. But I'm still not impressed.
Paint it Black is a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ track on ⭐️⭐️⭐️ album. Too many dodgy lyrics on some tracks, in my opinion - this has lowered its rating.
Interesting listen as I'd never heard this album before. It sums The Stones up for me, Jumping Jack(?) flashes of brilliance but otherwise just average. They sound so cool on Paint It Black and Under My Thumb but clunky elsewhere and the songs aren't great. To be fair I think their best albums came a few years later.
This album definitely loses steam after a really strong start with an absolute classic to open. Also feels pretty dated for the most part and doesn’t hold up amazingly, but has some great moments.
A solid album. I like a few tracks by the Rolling Stones but for some reason I can’t get that into them, so this was probably the first album of theirs I’ve listened to the whole way through. Paint It, Black is obviously a classic and rightly so. I’d like it if more of the album was this dark - a few tracks were more generic rock and roll which were ok but not that memorable. Under My Thumb and Lady Jane are very good. The closing track was too long and trailed off into a jam with some sleazy ad libs from Jagger that I didn’t care much for. A good listen all in all, and a nice way to close week 2! Favourite track: Paint It, Black
Opened straight into an absolute banger but then got steadily more boring.
A few bangers but not their best as an overall album.
As expected
I don't like Jagger's voice.
Pretty good
not bad
Pretty alright album although it kind of peeks with first track
Day 2. An album I have been familiar with for over 40 years since I first heard it in 1981 (my 17th birthday) A transitional Stones album with a more British feel and Jagger and Richards really starting to develop as songwriters. A bold step to include a lengthy jam too. Some filler, but the Stones’ filler was always quality!
One really great song and a bunch of forgettable ones.
There were some good moments on this, but it's a little more sparse compared to sticky fingers. I like some of the darker gothic-pop moments on the album, but it's spread out amongst some quite tedious blues tunes, a lot of which lack energy behind them. Best Track: Under My Thumb Worst Track: Going Home
A bit of a bop, would be good at a dinner party.
Not my thing.
hmmmmm im not obsessed with this.... its sort of boring and repetitive. Like definitely not bad but if this is contemporary with Rubber Soul i definitely prefer that album.
Starting the record with Paint It Black, one of the greatest songs ever written, certainly sets the bar high for the rest of the album. Unfortunately, it underwhelms. That's not to say there are no other good songs; I Am Waiting and Flight 505 are both solid, and Under My Thumb is a certified classic. But everything else is average at best and a disappointment relative to my standards of the Rolling Stones.
This feels like the Stones’ transition into their psychedelic period. It’s incredibly uneven but there’s some great forward thinking material here
Some easy listeners but none I was familiar with.
paint it black crazy guete song eternal blabla. sitar beatles george harrison-effekt. stupid girl, ääh öööh äääh. isches ironieee??? findi chli whack lady jane cute, sehr medieval. under my thumb funny marimba und recht geili fuzz gitarre links. recht guete song, ultra misogyn. doncha bother me afoch meh son rocknroll song, au wenn slide giti funny. think isch nöd de aretha aber rechts cooli fuzz gitarre i like. flight 505 het au wieder fuzz bass ding. aber isch afoch chuck berry de song oder? high and dry isch cute, s crash links isch mit de ziit grating. its not easy au wieder rocknroll time. im wikipedia artikel wird das album die ganz ziit mit rubber soul vergliche, gsehni vorallem weg de sitar und so. aber rubber soul caret nöd für das und ich bin afoch en beatles guy. i am waiting hani etz no nice gfunde. going home het nöd möse 11 minute sii. hui isch das öpis vom beste vode stones? paint it black wär nödmol uf de UK version druf.
The album started really strong, but then dropped off
After a few albums of Stones on this list... I still don't have anything to hang onto. Jagger's voice maybe. But there isn't any other spark.
The songs aren't bad, but my goodness the lyrics have aged poorly
Never bothered with the early albums, but I quite liked this one
While the actual music was more interesting and varied than on “Sticky Fingers,” most of the lyrics were so insipid that I had a hard time taking the album seriously. That said, the album also includes “Paint It Black,” so I can’t go as low as 2 stars.
Mmmmm. Moments of brilliance mixed in with some horrible lyrics and some dated sounds. They can write some catchy tunes tunes tho. 2.5/5
A couple of really nice tracks, but lacking the punch required for a classic record. Fave track: Out of Time
Good record - catchy tunes and developing of a cool style. Maybe not a knock out from beginning to end but pretty damn decent. Fave track: Under My Thumb
Paint it, Black was almost lightning in a bottle, such a fucking great song it made the rest of the album sound sort of mediocre? Just Blaise after the fact, 2.7
2nd listen. I don’t want to give every Rolling Stones album a 2 (I think I gave Exile on Main Street a 3) so I guess this is a 3. The only song I really like, Paint It Black, has really grown off of me so I just didn’t really enjoy this, but it’s not bad.
Yeah! I can dig this.
Mostly forgettable bluesy nonsense with a dash of good songwriting thrown in. Greatly overshadowed by "Paint it Black" but apparently that song's not even in the real version?????
I've never listened to this album straight through. I understand it's their first album to contain all original songs. I really like a lot of their later stuff, so I will be interested in hearing where they started. There are many recognizable songs here. This was a fun listen but certainly not my favorite from The Rolling Stones. 3/5
Really, the album the Rolling Stones started displaying all of their sexy swagger and provocateur demeanor. That said, for every other undeniable hit, the album hits you with a breather or two that only break up the pace, meandering about, being somewhat lacklustre.
This album had a strong start, but progressively decreased in quality. The last song was way too long and pretty annoying. Most of the album was mediocre.
Paint it Black is obviously an incredible song. In my opinion, it's also the only incredible song on the album. There wasn't much here of note for me, and the incredibly overt sexism through me off. 2.75/5
An ok album
Good
Paint It Black is so good, and Under My Thumb is so, so bad
Classic. Just never had much attraction to the Stones.
Album Nr. 77 Nicht wirklich schlecht. Aber dem Album geht, vereinfacht gesagt, die Puste aus.
Not their best work, but there still delivering in what was their 4th (?) studio album.
Nice!!!
Your average Stones album. Everyone does their part but it doesnt rise above mediocrity for me. I'd give it a 3.5 if possible, I listened to it straight through, no breaks, can appreciate it for the most part. Under My Thumb is great though.
Maybe I’m just not the biggest Stones fan. I at least knew a couple songs on this album but overall it was just okay. They must have some albums that are spectacular though right?
Nope. 3
Loved it and hated it. Some song (Paint It Black) are outstanding while others (Going Home) are annoying AF.
Lite besviken faktiskt men vissa låtar är riktigt bra så det gör inget
3.5
Pretty good yeah
Solid 3.5
Some great tracks, and some complete misses. Minus 1 start for the 10 minutes of nonsense in going home
I listened to the UK version of this (and then Paint It Black ofc). The vocals are really dominant. These songs are quite boring... I like their energy though :) Probably very impressive for its time, but I'm just bored listening to it now. Paint It Black is amazing though...
Plods along merrily with a few stand out tracks.
Its OK. One of their better ones
Why the hell was paint it, black left off the UK version? Madness
good record, I had not heard mother's little helper in decades lol.
Not there best but a fee good songs
favourite song: paint it black so i listened to paint it black, then listened to the uk version in full. i shouldve done paint it black last because nothing else quite lived up to it and this album felt loooong
Mother's little helper
Really demonstrated Rolling Stones blues credentials
The crazy tonal shift from Stupid Girl (spiteful, misogynistic) to Lady Jane (respectful, regal) is crazy. Why tf would I listen to the UK version that doesn’t have Paint It Black on there??? Whack suggestion. Most everything else here stays within the lines of the stones stuff for this time - a little honkytonk, a little bluesy stuff, rock, slight instrumental experimentation. Solid
I listened to both the American and English releases of this album. Liked the American better. The English version tended to drag on a bit. There are some great songs on this album. Cool to hear some of the musical elements that became central to the Rollings Stones’ future sound on this early record
A good not great album. A couple great songs, mostly good songs, some okay.
Mother’s Little Helper, Under My Thumb, and Out of Time are really good. The rest is pretty forgettable.
I guess the hits are the hits for a reason. With the exception of I Am Waiting, the remainder of the non-singles are pretty much forgettable. 3 stars on the strength of the good ones alone.
I think if I were more of a Stones historian this would've done more for me but there were just so many points where I forgot I was listening to anything at all.
The beginning of the Stones really sounding like the Stones. Recording is still a little rough, although Brian Jones' use of whatever instruments were around lifts the sound into something fresher than most of their contemporaries.
I listened to Beggars Banquet a few days ago and wasn't the biggest fan. This album was more enjoyable a listen for me. Pretty simple and a bit long, but not bad. 3/5.
Better than that blues album of theirs
Pretty good album
Besides the popular songs, Meg.
The UK version didnt have Paint it Black (track 1 on US version). Its ok as a blues early Stones period example.
The beginning of the Stones really sounding like the Stones. Recording is still a little rough, although Brian Jones' use of whatever instruments were around lifts the sound into something fresher than most of their contemporaries. Going home is waaaaay too long, just a noodly blues jam. It shows the beginning of their dynamic playing style and playing off each other, but I'm not sure we needed 11 minutes of a under baked idea. I think I prefer either their earlier less polished and more bluesy records, or their later material where they are more confident in their own thing. And the misogyny is staggering. Women are either berated and belittled, subjugated, or raised onto pedestals (setting them up for failure?) I'm really not sure I could listen to this frequently.
It's got two of my favorite singles from the Stones ever but the rest didn't grab me that hard.
#2 The Rolling Stones - Aftermath (1966) Blues Rock British Rhythm & Blues, Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues The Stones' Rubber Soul is definitely a far cry from the actual Rubber Soul. While I appreciate the experimentation on display here, the aimless songs and concerningly large amount of misogyny (???) keeps it from truly being a *good* album. Sure was a different time. Favourite Track: Out of Time Least Favourite Track: Stupid Girl
It's the album "Paint it Black" is on. While that song is a classic, the rest of the album is just okay.
Well, classic stones. Mother's Little Helper was nice, and as problematic as Under My Thumb's lyrics are, as nice is the instrumental. Felt like the second half wasn't as good as the first one. Paint It Black would have been nice. And Going Home was way, way too long. All in all... not bad but also not outstanding
eh. meh. bwah. *blows raspberry* this album is fine. early-era rebellious rock music from the original pioneers of that sound. i know that the rolling stones have done better than this though. much much better. it's not to say this album is bad, it's just serviceable.
Some of the classic hits on this one, some of the other tracks though seem a bit ‘trying to fit in with the times’ vibe about them.
#134. I'm pretty sure I was under the impression that the Rolling Stones were one of the rock and roll greats, but actually listening to their albums has me questioning that opinion, because none of them seem to be particularly great. 3/5: it's OK at best
There's a lot more misses than hits from this Rolling Stones album. It shows the future potential of the group, but somehow most of the album feels like filler. Best Songs: Paint it Black, Under My Thumb Worst Songs: Stupid Girl, I Am Waiting
Decent Stones, like other stuff from them better but nice to hear some classics.
Shocked by how boring I found this one apart from Paint It Black. I think I am simultaneously too young and too old for The Rolling Stones.
Not really that interesting for me
This one of those albums where the UK version differs markedly from the US version - I played the UK version. This is the first album where Jagger-Richards were the writers of all the songs, and it foreshadows the four truly great Stones albums. The lyrical themes tend towards casual and vindictive sexism at times, which to modern ears isn't so great. Still, it's a good album with many strong songs. 3/5
Far from the best Stones album but also very far from their worst. An important adjustment in their approach, expanding their sound with some psychedelia and veering from straight pop rock. Mothers Helper immediately lets everyone know The Stones are dipping into the psych. Under My Thumb is a classic, such a standout opening. Going Home wasn’t particularly great but it was neat to see the Stones experiment with a wandering bluesy 11 minute jam. Stupid Girl is a bit rough but I suppose this was 1966, released before the last Leafs cup win, so I guess that can be forgiven. Really easy listen overall, Strong album but not their best, just the beginning. 3.5 stars
didn’t think i liked the stones but i liked this alright
I’m sure I’m in the minority but I think the ‘experimental pop’ side of the Rolling Stones (as heard on Mother’s Little Helper and Under My Thumb) is one of the more interesting features of their discography. It sounds like Brian Jones deserves most of the credit for this? I was looking forward to a whole album in this vein, but I got maybe half of one. There’s the usual smattering of unremarkable blues numbers, but there are moments of melodic inspiration and unusual instrumentation too.
It's okay they have better albums
Okay
man their early shit is weird, idk I kinda had fun I guess but a lot of this was just not it they didn't know what they were doing yet
That weird transitional period for the Stones, from when they were releasing an album of mostly old blues covers to what would become The Rolling Stones we know and love. And this is made muddier by having two separate UK & US releases (I listened to the UK edition, it's the artwork provided above) where you have two seperate track listings with two good good songs (UK: "Mother's Little Helper" & "Under My Thumb"; US: "Paint It Black" & the aforementioned "Under My Thumb") and a lot of filler... Sometimes overly long filler like "Goin' Home" which is just an 11 minute long jam session. Brian Jones is a tour de force here, he'd pick up any old thing laying around and make it work, so for that this album represents a more mature Stones sound. But 1966 was a hard year for many bands, we got Revolver by The Beatles and Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys and everything else was fighting for a very, very distant third place.
Under My Thumb was the only song on this album I'd heard before and I still dig it, though it's not my favorite Stones song. The others are just ok - not exactly my taste. I respect their vibe but probably wouldn't come back to this album if I'm honest.
I messed up and listened to a different version of this album. The US version maybe? Either way, the album I listened to started with "Paint it Black," which is obviously an awesome song. My son described it as Halloween music. Must have sounded spooky! Loved the mono version of Lady Jane, very sweet and melodic. "Stupid Girl" was hard to listen to because of the way Mick Jagger says the song's title. The rest of the songs are cool, new instruments are added, and have a distinct late 50s and 60s vibe. I get the hype.
Prima lekker geluisterd. Paint it black wel beste
These 80+ old guys used to be a boy-band. And an international symbol for "sexy bad boys". And it shows, hence, the predatory-ish lyrics. Still enjoyed most of it. But definitely a product of its time.
The Rolling Stones took the album template, experimentation, and world music influence of The Beatles' 'Rubber Soul' and ran with it. They did so with a lot more edge and grit. If parents hated Lennon and McCartney, Jagger and Richards were probably a nightmare. Their best song from the era, 'Paint It Black', is sadly missing from the original UK edition but there are still plenty of standout songs here. I have mixed opinions about The Rolling Stones but I think this is one of their better works. Unfortunately there's also a lot of misogyny that ruins would have otherwise been a very good album.
I’m surprised/not surprised at how misogynistic this album is. Lots of danceable beats, and Think is a fun listen that I don’t think I’ve heard before.
There's some great tracks on here, but there's also a lot of generic filler. I don't think it really recovered after the rubbish 11 minute track smack bang in the middle of the album. Who thought that was a good idea? It completely kills all the momentum. The mix is really low and strange for much of the record too. A generous 3/5
Ok
Gave this a really good listen. I generally dont like the rolling stones. Some of their popular songs are catchy, most of them annoying, which is why I havent explored their catalog deeper. I can really hear the influenced by the blues as evidenced by Doncha Bother Me, High and Dry, Going home. But all in all this still sounds like the rolling stones. None of the instruments sound apart from the others, they blend together to create noise. Maybe its a sign of the time, that was the best recording could do. But it doesnt sound good to me.
Paint it Black is an iconic song. The rest is alright, but not much I would return to on this one.
meh
Par dobrih al zapravo dosta slabo. Vise popasti rock nego rock kak ih uvijek spominju.
Not much of a Stones fan, but there are a lot of hits on this one.
Solid Rolling Stones record, good songs throughout with a few stand-outs. I've never been the biggest fan of the Rolling Stones, but certainly don't dislike em either.
Paint It Black carries this album
Not their best, but always a few good songs.
So, I hear this as the more rebellious version of The Beatles, but I'm not sure that I like it more than the Beatles. I do get it, and I don't dislike it, but it doesn't measure up to the other music of the time for me. It is still good, and deserves a place in the top albums of all-time though! The back half of the album is also much better than the first, but I think that's because it gets away from that rebellious attitude and settles down a bit.
3.5
Typical Stones album. A couple big hits mixed with some heavy blues tracks.
Overall: Okay, LOVE the intro song. Those first few measures coming in? How powerful. What a way to start an album. You ever hear an album and think "this is good, but is probably way more powerful live?" That's the vibe I get. Favorite songs: Mother's Little Helper, Under My Thumb, High and Dry Pretty happy for the opportunity to hear classic albums that I would've never listened to. Probably wouldn't seek this album out, but it was nice to listen to while working.
One of my favorites to start and then just OK. Sorry for the lack of full review. I'll reflect on my laziness.
I found this surprisingly aggravating when I thought I'd like it. Out of time stands out for me because it could have been halved in length and just way too much chorus
This whole album is very staccato and it makes me anxious.
Outside the context of the Stones' place in music and society in 1966, in 2024 this album is just a decent blues record. A couple of songs are very musically dated, as well. The influence of "Under My Thumb" can be heard in some contemporary music. That song, "Mother's Little Helper" and the US-version track "Paint It Black" are the only real standouts.
6/10
Iconic and meh.
Some real bangers. Why wasn't paint it black on the UK version?
I always liked the beatles better. I dont know if it is the vocals by mick jagger or the jangly guitar that turns me off, but I dont like the stones that much. That said, the hits of the album are good.
Pas désagréable à écouter, mais pas le genre de rock que j'apprécie (trop "old school" à mon goût, j'imagine, on entend bien les influences du début du genre, mais je préfère ses itérations suivantes).
1/11/24
Not their best work, but not bad.
for this to be my first Rolling Stones album, it was just a little disappointing because i was a bit bored in the beginning (UK version). the tracks kind of just blend together, so there’s not really anything that stands out. the one song that i really liked initially was Going Home, but then it dragged for so long that it kind of ruined it for me (and i tend to like longer songs). there was also some questionable lyrics….but besides that out of the tracks that i did like, they were incredibly catchy and had nice melodies. i love the classic rock and blues sound. I’ll have to listen to the US version all the way through another time and rate this again. (i noticed that Paint it Black is the opener and the tracks are rearranged in a different manner, which probably makes a big difference) overall, pretty ok album.
Love the bluesy rock and roll stuff the baroque rock like Lady Jane, not so much.
Some decent tracks: Mother's Little Helper, Lady Jane, Under My Thumb, and Out Of Time. The rest weren't memorable to me.
One truly great song in Paint it Black, but found the rest of the album less than essential. An enjoyable listen, but not a must hear.
Lyrics don’t really age well. Music is pretty good, I can see the appeal
Stones - Klassiker.
This album has its highs at certain points, but the lows are super forgettable. Overall, it was an alright album but it is very dated, and ending with a mediocre 12 minute song isn’t great.
The Stones in their prime. Some nice hits on this record. Easy listen.
This album was fine. Why was "Paint it Black" on the US release but not on the UK release? *shrugs* I never really noticed (or honestly paid attention to) the influence of the Blues with The Rolling Stones until hearing this album.
This was fine. I've never been a big fan.
Sympa mais pas le meilleur des Stones à mon sens. Par contre je viens de remarquer que dans the UK version, il n'y a pas Paint it black :(
Couple good songs (mothers little helper, under my thumb) but lots or filler. I'd 2.5 it if I could.
This is fine. I was reading about how people talked about it as the best album of the year. Revolver and Blonde on Blonde both came out a couple months later.
Love the Stones. Not my favorite album but two VERY epically good classic songs.
An ok album which some cool songs, nothing Wow worthy so its mid.

Average Stones

Track 12: Take it or Leave it encapsulates how I felt about this album. I thought I would like this slower Rock & Roll but I think I listened to the album without feeling excitement about most of the songs
Classic Rock: fun-enough instrumentals that make you want to tap your foot, not much in the way of lyrical substance for me. Reminds me of the UK-era Beatles. Didn't care too much for it, but also didn't hate it. It's got a time and a place. NOTE: I liked how much Xylophone was used. That was neat. Fav Track(s): Under My Thumb
Listened to this one out loud with Kate who described it as "more country than [they] were expecting." Not sure that I took away the same conclusion, but again was underwhelmed by this one. Nothing wrong with it, but once again, not gripping.
Like the last 3 Rolling Stones album- this is a best off band
I liked the first half, felt unique enough, like the Stones starting to define their sound. But the second half started to drag, sounding really generic for the time. A good listen to though
Almost a 4
Its fine, the stones were always just fine for me
There was more going on than I expected, but I still don’t really love the stones for more than a song or two
A good record. Some really good song, and som less good.
Helt ok, groovy og litt CCR. Det likte jeg, forstår betydningen men finnes ting som dekker denne itch’en bedre.
Classy, good hits.
Better than expected. Kind of bluesy. Lots interest near the end.
Not bad, but didn't enjoy many songs
A few massive tunes for the Stones and really the album where they started to carve out their own style, but overall average album, especially given their catalog. 3.5
Pretty basic album. Like the rock, but The Rolling Stones are kinda meh
Good, but not best Stones album
I’m not entirely sure why it’s on this list. Unlike the great stones albums of the seventies this (and lots of albums in the sixties) feels disjointed and more like a random mix of singles. The best song on the album, mothers little helper, was replaced by the other classic paint it black in the US. So you’re experience would be different depending on where you are! That being said, you begin to see stones coming into their own on this album. Under my Thumb with the jaunty marimba contrasting the dark lyrics is still classic stones. There were some other fun songs on the album too, like “what to do” and “out of time” the latter though, at 5:45 got really repetitive, and while I appreciate the stones earnest love for classic blues music, I’m still not big fan of how they interpret it all the time. That being said I’m sure hearing micks distinct voice over Keith’s bluesy guitar probably sounded completely different and fresh at the time, but when you consider the amazing music that would come later, much of this music is as mid as sixties it was made in.
A couple good ones.
Good album. Great sound
There were a handful of good songs on this album, Paint it Black being the most iconic of them. This album seemed to have more "catchy" songs than most of this classic rock genre. I'm of the wrong generation to fully appreciate this album, but I'm glad I listened to it. I feel like I understand the RS a bit better now.
Some absolutely classic bangers on here, but overall there are too many tracks with sparse soundscapes and lo-fi production to make it an easy, cohesive listen. Wild that Paint it Black wasn't on the UK release! Favorite track: Under My Thumb
Not the biggest fan
Some good songs.
i dont really care about the rolling stones
In an aftermath it's not very clear why the left out paint it black on the UK release. Listened to the US release first.
Always love them, but earlier jams aren't my fave
Byrjar frábærlega og fjarar aðeins út. Classic plata og mótandi fyrir Rolling Stones og rokkstefnuna. Paint it black er arguably besta lag hljómsveitarinnar og under my thumb er ennþá meistaraverk þrátt fyrir tilraunir sumra að breyta merkingu lagsins í eitthvað cancel dæmi. Flott sound, góð plata og í raun brautryðjandi.
J'avais jamais réalisé à quel point /Under my thumb/ est sexiste. Ewww. /Mother Little Helper/ est très bien, le reste c'est des Stones très classique, pas de fulgurances particulières.
Decent
Just kinda meh
Although they have some excellent songs (Waiting on a Friend) I’m just not a big fan of the Stones. This album was a reminder of that.
Aftermath" is a classic album by The Rolling Stones, released in 1966. The UK version of the album is particularly notable for its tracklist, which differs from the US version. It marks a significant turning point in the band's career, as it showcases their evolution from a primarily blues and R&B cover band to prolific songwriters and musicians in their own right. Musical Evolution: "Aftermath" demonstrates The Rolling Stones' growth as songwriters. It features primarily original compositions by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, a departure from their earlier albums that were heavily reliant on covers. This marked the beginning of their transformation into one of the greatest rock songwriting duos in history. Diverse Sound: "Aftermath" explores a range of musical styles, from the bluesy "Mother's Little Helper" to the country-inspired "High and Dry" and "I Am Waiting." The diversity of the album showcases the band's ability to experiment and push the boundaries of their sound. Lyricism: Jagger and Richards' songwriting on this album delves into themes of love, relationships, and social commentary. Tracks like "Lady Jane" and "Out of Time" demonstrate their knack for crafting memorable and emotionally resonant lyrics. Instrumentation: The instrumental performances are strong throughout, with Brian Jones contributing a wide array of instruments, adding texture and depth to the songs. His use of the sitar on "Paint It Black" is a standout moment. Influence: "Aftermath" had a significant influence on the rock and roll genre, especially the emerging psychedelic movement of the 1960s. It's considered a landmark album in the evolution of rock music. Timeless Appeal: The music on "Aftermath" has aged remarkably well. The songs still sound fresh and relevant today, which is a testament to the enduring quality of The Rolling Stones' work. In summary, the UK version of "Aftermath" by The Rolling Stones is a pivotal album in their discography and in the history of rock music. It showcases the band's transition from cover artists to accomplished songwriters and demonstrates their ability to explore diverse musical styles. With iconic tracks and a timeless quality, it's a must-listen for any rock music enthusiast.
Not a Stones fan, but pretty good, esp. as it has Paint It, Black
Much like Off the Wall, though it contains some iconic tracks, it’s not my favourite album from the band.
2.5 rounded up. While I do love me some later Stones, this album just doesn’t compare to Blonde on Blonde or Revolver which both came also out in 1966
Overall I'm not sure I like the early Stones sound. Dripping in reverb, Mick Jagger's straining half yells. Couldn't get through Going Home, but I do like Under My Thumb.
- This one didn't really do as much for me as the other Stones ones - Solid classic rock, maybe I should listen to it again
- Under My Thumb is really good - album had its moments but mostly up and down
Derp. Deleted my notes. Paint it Black is perfection. Obviously. Everything else is fine. Aaaaand now I realized these notes aren't private. oof.
Collapses halfway through
Not the biggest stones fan
UK version felt like a slog. Too much filler and no Paint It Black.
Was good. Another album I've heard 100 times over the course of my life on the radio.
Paint it black is the best song on the album, its like not even close. Under my thumb is a fucking meme. There is a song on here that is 11 minutes long. A lot of the songs just repeat the same chorus over and over. Its not bad but its just kind of forgettable. Dirty Beatles. 4/10
As well as not being a Beatles fan, I'm not a Stones fan either. I like a bunch of their songs, but they are just kind of meh to me. This album has two great Stones songs, but the rest don't speak to me.
This album feels kinda all over the place. It also feels like the engineer just discovered stereo mixing and the bass track is meaninglessly in my left ear. All the instruments are very separated right and left. Great and mediocre songs throughout the album I feel like this could be a much better album
It was ok. The standouts (Paint It Black) are timeless, Brian Jones' experimental sounds make many tracks a little more unique. Overall though, it suffers from the Seinfeld effect, and just isnt my flavor of this era/style. It was mostly a bored listen.
Definitely more interesting than a lot of their contemporaries, it's almost proto-grunge. Still very unrefined but good
Toploader. When people just treated albums as a collection of singles. As they do again now. 5* side A 2* side B
I enjoy a couple of Stones songs but I think they are overplayed now. The rest just feels like too jangly for me. Controversial opinion maybe. But I respect their influence on rock music.
Solid
This is a nice early stones record with a few essentials on there, a unique blues rock attitude along with some novel sounding guitars and progressions
Une réussite sur le plan musicale, les mélodies coulent et on hoche la tête en rythme; paroles misogynes à la clé.
It caught me off that this cover is different than the one I'm used to, not to mention that the English version doesn't even have Paint it Black on it. A clear stepping stone to them becoming one of if not the first major rock band. Essential, but likely still doesn't get itself into my top 3 Stones albums
This is honestly just kind of mid. The hits are the hits. But, a lot of it is filler. I can see the appeal of this in 1966. But, this is before they got super creative and stopped ripping off black R&B artists.
Couple of good songs but not my favourite
Kedeligt i længden. Ret ensformigt. Mere beach rock end jeg regnede med. Paint it Black + Lady Jane +
Paint It, Black is a timeless god-damned jam. Stupid Girl I could do without. Lady Jane is tender if somewhat forgetable. Under My Thumb is another jam. Dusty recording with sprinkly marimba work lend this one some magic. Add also the simple, but groovy little bass-line. Doncha Bother Me goes into a bluesy stomp-clap like jam with a slide guitar. Not my favorite from their repository. It's Not Easy is a fine enough rock n' roll song with kind of silly subject matter: "its not easy living on your own." I'm now 9 minutes into Going Home, while I was writing an email and not hating any of it. A drawn out spacey noodle jam with Mick Jagger shouting over top is a perfect outro. Maybe not something I would go and throw on on purpose, but it's nice. All in, I'm a 3 on this one. Not a great album by any measure. A could of great songs and the rest are mostly throwaway. Going Home is the only song coming out of this that I didn't know that I actually was moved by.
Get out rock band because we about to paint it black.
Paint it Black is an all-timer, although it doesn't seem to fit very well into the rest of the album. Feels a little bit like surf rock at time, but then there are other times that have a bit of ragtime piano to them. Not really what I was expecting, as I don't listen to the Stones very often. This album was fine, not really that interesting to me though.
Paint it Black and Under my Thumb are the two songs I knew on this album and they are both great songs. Every other song didn't really stand out and just sounded like pretty generic classic rock songs. I could have really done without ever listening to Going Home, that was a bit disturbing I felt like I was being sexted non-consensually. Pretty much a perfectly average album, as 3 as it gets.
Paint it Black is a classic. Very nice of them to name track 2 after Evelyn. Under My Thumb rules. I've heard this song so many times but with nice headphones that fuzzzzzz really comes out. Also xylophone or marimba or vibraphone or whatever is great. Damn that fuzz comes back on Flight 505 right on. Ayyyy more fuzz on It's Not Easy. They should have the fuzz on every track. Overall this is just a middling album. Nothing special but has those two jams in Paint it Black and Under My Thumb.
I listened to the original UK release (so Paint It Black was missing from this release, which I love). Overall I think while the Stones had some great songs but a lot of their songwriting were quite repetitive at that time. Comparing with the Beatles' Rubber Soul which was released right before the Stones went to the studio and record Aftermath, I have to say The Beatles were much more developed in songwriting and they had lot more complex songs. Favourite song: Mother's Little Helper, Lady Jane (nice baroque pop).
As this was my first experience listening to a rolling stones LP, I had much higher hopes for this album considering how beautifully heartbreaking and hypnotic 'Paint it Black' is. But the rest of the album is nothing like this. Some decent take on some blues abd classic rock, but nothing that stood out to me to the point where I'd be listening to it again any time soon.
Not their best, not their worst. Stones, innit.
Probably really good at face value, but it’s hard not to compare this to Revolver in 1966. The Brian Jones-era Stones were definitely talented, and this is a step forward, but their post-1968 put stuff like this to shame. Glad Paint It Black made the American version of the record. Fun tidbit, when looking for a title to Revolver, Ringo suggested they tease the Stones by naming their new album “After-Geography.”
Ryan - Unexpected: Enjoyed "Going Home" [if long]. Enjoyed the Delta Blues -ish of "Doncha Bother Me"
Not that interested in the Rolling Stones deeper cuts to be honest
Generally tuneful, but elementary compared to what the Beatles were doing at the same time…Aftermath is no Revolver. (I listened to the UK version, not sure how much of a difference that makes.)
After hearing from Mother's Little Helper to Out of Time (both tracks I enjoyed) I decided to switch to the US version instead of the UK version because it seems insane to omit Paint It Black and the other tracks weren't doing much for me. Did the Brits only get PIB as a single? I am so confused. This doesn't rival what the Beatles were putting out around at the same time (Rubber Soul and Revolver are both much stronger overall) but it was still fairly enjoyable. Going Home was way too long - I don't think it did enough interesting things with its length to merit it. I'm surprised I didn't like it more but it might be a case of exposure - my parents didn't have this album growing up so I'm less familiar. Tattoo You, Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed, Hot Rocks and Exile On Main Street were my records. This one felt more dated to my ear than other Stones albums, given its reputation.
Kind of mid tbh. I question if this would be in the list we’re it not a RS album. Not bad though. Under My Thumb is great.
Aftermath is a pretty solid album. With its mix of catchy tunes and innovative sounds, it's a notable entry in their discography. The standout tracks, such as "Under My Thumb" and "Lady Jane," capture the essence of their era and demonstrate the Rolling Stones' ability to blend rock with a touch of sophistication. "Under My Thumb" is an undeniable highlight, boasting a memorable riff and Jagger's great vocals. The song's playful lyrics and infectious rhythm make it a quintessential track of the Rolling Stone. Similarly, "Lady Jane" exhibits the band's willingness to venture into new musical territories, featuring a bit of a folk inspired sound and showcasing Jagger's more delicate vocal delivery. However, Aftermath has its ups and downs. While the high points are undeniably strong, there are a few tracks that suffer from repetition and lack of depth. Songs like "Flight 505" and "I Am Waiting" have their moments, but tend to overstay their welcome with extended instrumental sections that don't contribute meaningfully to the overall listening of the album. This repetitiveness can make these tracks feel somewhat monotonous, detracting from the overall flow. Not unbearable in any way, but not as great as other tracks. Despite these shortcomings, Aftermath remains an solid album in the Rolling Stones' catalogue. It showcases the band's willingness to experiment with different musical styles while staying true to their rock roots. 7/10
I listened to the wrong version and it was mid af but I understand the importance of this band and the album to rock history so I’ll refrain from being a hater
Very definitely rolling stones, not my cuppa
Identifying The Rolling Stones : it’s The Rolling Stones
This is from the era where the US and the UK versions of the same album not only had a different track order but an entirely different track listing. If it's different songs and a different album cover and released at a different time, is it even the same album? I assume based on our author that this list entry is the UK version. A good album! I've always liked the Stones without really getting why they were as big as they were. 60s rock! Great! Sounds like other 60s rock! Maybe people just like Mick Jagger because he looks like a human blow up doll
Really didn't need that 11 minute song in the middle.
Earlier Stones albums apparently had a lot of different sounds going on with their songs, which was unexpected but pleasant to see. Flight 505 had some ragtime running through it, High and Dry had the vibe of a folky bar number you'd play off a jukebox, and Out of Time even incorporated a bit of a doo wop. As a record, I liked those aspects of it, and also liked more of the quieter numbers on the album which I thought showed the range of the band well. Songs like Under My Thumb had a groovy bluesy feel to it (although with a bit of eyebrow raising lyrics to it), while Lady Jane was a wonderful little acoustic number. I felt a lot of the second half started to blend together sonically, and I thought Going Home was much too long, it dragged on for more than half of the song's runtime. So I enjoyed a good part of this, but found it inconsistent.
Pretty good, if you don't listen to the lyrics.
Yeah its ok. Early bluesy RS but its difficult not to raise an eyebrow at lyrics of Stupid Girl and Under My Thumb.
Cool
Some interesting stuff in there. 'Under My Thumb' and that trippy freestyle section from 'Goin' Home' stood out for me.
🫡 7/10
I've never really liked the stones and this album did not change my mind about them.
It isn't Revolver or Pet Sounds. But it isn't terrible either, Under My Thumb is wonderful and stands out from everything else here
OK, so this is a bit funny. I had never heard of this album, and honestly, when I looked at the track listing, I thought it was some early greatest hits record. LOL! Now all that said, there are three totally classic tracks on this record, and the rest isn't anything special. There are MANY great Rolling Stones records. This one isn't bad, but I don't see how it is an album everyone should hear before they die... I mean, for sure Let It Bleed and Beggars Banquet are much better records than this one.
De afspeellijst begon met Paint it Black, een heerlijk nummer. Maar daarna kon het me niet meer grijpen en werd het wat saai zelfs.
i like it
vasattı
There is like 3 songs missing on the UK version from the US version and it had to be the outro song of Full Metal Jacket (1987) 😢 7,5/10
It was literally just okay. Paint it Black was the only song I remember and enjoy.
Quería que me guste más.
Preferred sticky fingers
It’s ok. Nothing standout. 3/5
Not their best songwriting. Has some decent songs, but it all sounds a bit flat
It's ok but ther's some rolling stones I prefer over this
This was certainly one of the albums
Not their most outstanding
its somewhat odd since the first few songs are just pop-y songs that are catchy and more high tempo and then the rest of the album is just blue rock like music which is nice but it really makes the album a 2 parter
A couple of good good songs, but then the album goes downhill and you don’t know when it’s going to finish. I know this is one of the first Stones albums, but think they should have cut like 5 songs here. Again, the good songs here (Mother’s little helper, under my thumb, etc.) are really good, but the filler is massive, specially on the second half. Love the stones, but need to be fair with this record.
I have always had such a tough time connecting with The Rolling Stones and this album hasn’t changed that.
This is from the time when an album was the singles plus B-sides and other filler. As one would expect, it has a couple of great songs and lots of filler. Most of the filler is not too bad. Favorite song: Under My Thumb
Really interesting. You can almost hear the band coalescing around a sound to go forward with here. Lots of different styles and I enjoyed listening to it. It's unlikely to feature too regularly on my playlist but I'd certainly think about listening to it again. 3.5 but down to 3.
Decent
Lady Jane sparks the sounds of Boston, More Than a Feeling. Have to say, personally I was never a Tones fan, just the odd random track I liked... but this album actually surprised me, I liked it, I loved the acoustic, electric guitar arrangements. There are a few misses on the album, but overall, was a listenable album that you would actually choose to play.
Stupid Girl has not aged well. Some bangers on here though.
This album just didn't blow me away. I'm used to better from them.
Real good stuff
Some classics, pretty misogynistic in places!
Pretty solid album. Really liked High and Dry.
3 1/2, and I'm rounding down.
I liked it ok, I did learn some of the songs to play on my electric guitar many years ago. 3 stars
Not really my thing but not bad
3/5
other than a few songs, i really didn’t care to much for this album. it was mostly filler, in my opinion. highlights: “paint it, black”, “under my thumb”, “think”.
The album opens up with one of the most classic examples of 60’s Stones with Paint It Black and a few songs later is another, Under My Thumb. Two of my favorite Stones’ songs ever. There are a few other fun songs but also some that didn’t really resonate that much with me. Nothing bad but not as many Must Listens, either besides the aforementioned PIB and UMT. The final song is called Going Home and I can hear Gloria by Them, some Doors, the Pixies’ Gigantic, and the Thong Song of all things in this track. I’m sure there’s more that we’re influenced in a way by this one but it was a bit too long and meandering for my tastes. Solid but not my favorite Stones’ album.
Standard Stones
I liked this album, and they’re obviously influential, but I think it’s far from their best work…. Controversially, I am starting to feel like this list should really restrict itself to one or two albums from each artist. And if more, they have to be notably different from each other and distinct in the influence they have had. This does not meet that criteria.
Wow, lyrics are light years ahead of the actual music, with a couple of exceptions. Somehow, I've heard all the songs but never actually listened to the whole album. When you compare this album to the competitors released the same year, it just sounds unimaginative, but the lyrics, good god.
aight
already listened, but a good one
Kinda boring. Pick up the pace, Charlie!
I dont know its fine. Probably high 2s 3/5
I like the new instruments used. “Under My Thumb”
Highlight: Going Home 3,5/5
