Reviews (page 8 of 12)

With some of the 60 years (!) of hindsight, there's a bunch of very questionable lyrics here. So in that sense it is very much of its time. It has some great moments, too, though.

Pretty good. Definitely held up by paint it black.

60s Stones. Considered their breakthrough. Similar to early Beatles with a touch more edge. Classic 60s rock. Good, very basic, middle of the road.

Ok album. Some good stuff but woof some of these lyrics

Interesting album in the way of charting the evolution of the Stones. Proto-stuff, with one foot playing beginner blues and the future-Stones, breaking through into their own with Mothers Little Helper and Under my Thumb.

Actually like the early stones. Under my thumb is one of my favourite stones tracks- I’ll say a 3 even though I’ll probably never listen to this again.

Alright so I've been handed three Stones albums now and I'm just kind of waiting for one to blow me away. I love the Stones, don't get me wrong. But I was given their debut album which, I mean, is all covers done worse than the originals. Then I was given "Sticky Fingers," which I had actually never heard in its entirety and really liked. But it didn't blow me away, man. I wanted this to blow me away. It did not. This was apparently the Stones' first album of all original music. The Beatles first album of this nature was "A Hard Day's Night." They knocked it out of the park. This...is good but I mean come you guys. They're mostly still trying to be like their influences and not like themselves. Some of it is poppy, some of it is bluesy, but none of it blows me away. Such a bummer. One day the generator will throw "Let it Bleed," Some Girls," or "Exile on Main Street" at me and I'll be a happy boy. Until then...three stars. "Under My Thumb" really does a lot of work here for me. Standout Tracks: Mother's Little Helper, Stupid Girl, Under My Thumb, Doncha Bother Me, Flight 505, It's Not Easy

Not bad, enjoyed listening to it but nothing too exciting on it

0002 / 22.12.2024 I was so happy that I'm going to hear Paint It, Black again... but then I learned about the UK and US versions. And 1001albumsgenerator gave me this cover and not the blurred one so I guess that means no PIB for me. At least I got to hear Mother's Little Helper which is easily one of my favorites by TRS, maybe even better than PIB. Going Home starts really great but the jamming seems pointless. The first few tracks are really good but holy shit I can't stand High and Dry. So much of the album reminds me of the last CCR album Choruses - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ Mixing - ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ Lyrics - ★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ Vocals - ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ Instrumentation - ★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ Rating - 58 Highlights: Mother's Little Helper; Out of Time Lowlights: Flight 505; High and Dry; I Am Waiting

The beginning of their tweet period before they really became what they are. It's not bad. I'll come back to this sometimes

Man, this generator really wants me to listen to The Rolling Stones, 2nd album in a row! Having listened to Sticky Fingers only yesterday, I can't help but compare these 2 albums. And this one really just doesn't live up to Sticky Fingers. It's ok, and features some really solid songs. But the very straight forward blues rock lacks diversity and feels very repetitive for the whole album.

Ganska bra, kmr inte få mig o gilla Rolling Stones mer

Thematically troubling, way too long, but some undeniably great moments. I liked Take it or Leave it a lot.

I dont like rock that much

Happy to hear a few classics from my youth. The oversaturation of the stones on the radio in the 80s and since (with changes to radio formats) has contributed to my underappreciation of The Stones. A move away from their mostly blues sound here.

Listened to the UK Version so no Paint It Black. This barely edges into 3-star territory.

It was okay.

Decent album in the Stones discography and certainly the best of their early material. This record represents a turning point for the band where they put more of a focus on songwriting - taking in influences from a variety of genres - such as psychedelia, country, blues, and middle eastern music. It's worth noting that arguably the best track from the album (Paint It Black) is not featured on the original UK release, but was added later for the US version of the album. Under My Thumb is another song of note featuring a catchy marimba riff and controversial lyrics. Some of the featured songs can be a tad uninspired and get a bit repetitive, including the overlong Going Home, but overall, there is a good amount of worthwhile material here. Highlights: Paint It Black (US Version) Mother's Little Helper Under My Thumb Out Of Time Lowlights: Doncha Bother Me Going Home It's Not Easy What To Do

Wow, the wikipedia album summary really overhyped one of the most 'okay-est' blues rock albums of all time. They made it seem like this was going to be some phenomenal experimental pysch-rock masterpiece. I was actually a little excited to listen to a Rolling Stones album for once, but just like every other Rolling Stones album it is just the same bland Blues Rock songs. This album does have Paint it Black, which is my favorite Stones' song. Every other song is pretty boring and whatever that last song was had no business being 10+ minutes. This is my least favorite Stones' album so far, it is passable, but there is nothing interesting about besides Paint it Black. Low 3.

Stones-Sound aus den 60ern. Experimentell mit Sitar. Ein paar bekannte Songs. Kann man gut hören. 3/5

Rubber Soul competitor is a bit generous, Paint it Black is a great song, and like most stones albums there’s much left to be desired… they’re performers, mick jagger undoubtedly but album writing and cohesiveness isn’t up to par relative to the greats. Look at what the Pete Townsend was doing for example. It’s not to say the Stones don’t deserve their place on the pedestal, they do but not for their albums.

Good album for the most part. Usually like Rolling Stones, this one wasn’t GREAT. But it was good. So, 3 stars seems fair.

The earlier the RS album the more likely I will enjoy it. 3.5

Paint it Black and Under My Thumb almost feel out of place with the rest of the album.

even though paint it black is on this playlist, it’s not enough for me to make this 4 stars. I think the song is interesting but I don’t really like it that much. All the other songs were at maximum okay:

1966, wowza! These guys to me are so much cooler than the Beatles. The whole album however doesn't do it for me. But some great songs.

There are better Stones albums.

A few bangers. Solid Album.

Went for the UK version. Really enjoyed some songs, others not so much. Also wasn't as musically revolutionary as the wiki overview teased at. I guess it was the 60s though...

With a couple of exceptions, this is a pretty ordinary record. They can do better

Rock and roll classics from my childhood. Good lyrics, singing and did I hear some xialpone? Pretty good.

The Beatles made Revolver, The Beach Boys made Pet Sounds.

This was a pretty cool album that leaned more into the blues rock side of things. There were one or two tracks with a slight psychedelic edge, but overall, it feels like the band was still slowly moving toward that direction before fully diving into the psychedelic era.

My expectations for this were all time low since much of The Rolling Stones discography can be a brutal listen. Luckily, this album exceeded those expectations and was only slightly bad

I enjoyed the album although I had not much time to listen

Solid 3. Enjoyable and pretty catchy songs. It would probably rank even higher if it didn’t feel dated.

Ah, more splenetic misogyny from the 1960s. I am a Stones fan, but you wonder what minor thing the 'stupid girl' actually did which hurt poor wee Jagger's feelings so much that they had to pen this rubbish.

Back-to-back Rolling Stones albums, what are the odds? I found this more to my liking that Sticky Fingers. Felt a bit more daring and different, whereas Sticky Fingers was very vanilla rock. 'Under My Thumb' stood out as a particularly good song, but 'Mother's Little Helper' was also a quite good, especially as a way to start the album. Still, this wasn't anything that really blew me out of my chair. Haven't listened too much to Rolling Stones ever, and I guess there is a reason for that. Sure, they have some hit songs that are pretty cool, but mostly it's pretty mundane.

A good early Stones album. There’s a lot of stripped down blues and some nice, soul-influenced songs. “Think” could be an Otis Redding song. There are also a lot of tracks where they sound very British (including some folky psychedelic numbers) which isn’t typically what I think of when I think about the Rolling Stones. “Under My Thumb” is a fantastic song. Such a distinct, memorable sound. And “Paint It Black,” which was only on the US release, is of course a classic.

Ja nee niet me fsvo stones album beetje saai

Doorsmainen mutta askelta aikuisempi. Paljon hokemista. Pidän, mutten syty liekkeihin.

I prefer both singles band Stones and blues rocker Stones to mid 60s Stones but the songs are solid. Not essential IMO but also not a problem.

'Paint it, Black' is amazing. The rest is pretty bleh in my opinion. 3/5

From the first note, I was in my music world. The Rolling Stones, a close second to The Beatles, made some of the best music ever in my mind. Good album.

Enjoyed a couple familiar songs but definitely was put off by the misogynistic overtones.

This was ok but didn’t leave a huge impression

3 • Overall 3/5 • Some great singles (Paint it Black, Under My Thumb) • The more melodic tracks are strongest; the original Blues-formula tracks are pretty weak • The misogyny is off-putting; fairly easy to ignore when Under My Thumb is heard in isolation, but the thread through the album is a serious demerit

I had no idea that the Stones had an 11 minute loose improv song in their repertoire

Hilarious that they follow up the very juvenile Stupid Girl with a baroque pop song about classical romance in Lady Jane. Other than Paint it, Black and Under My Thumb, I'd say Doncha Bother. they were still a band in their blues bar phase and honestly it's mostly forgettable.

Albumi #100, 05.11.2024 The Rolling Stonesin neljäs (Briteissä julkaistu) studioalbumi julkaistiin vuonna 1966. Albumilla on varsin hyviäkin Stones-kappaleita, mutta harmittavasti Paint It Black puuttuu brittiversiosta. Myöhemmin julkaistulla jenkkiversiolla se on avausraitana.

Like the Beatles I don’t think I’d ever listened to a Stones album all the way through before this project so wasn’t really sure what to expect outside of the singles I’d heard before. I found myself enjoying some of the songs more than I expected. Ok so not all of them hit the spot and the musical sound was definitely better than the singing in a number of songs. Overall an enjoyable listen but just not sure it’s one of revisit again and again.

While an OK enough album, other than ‘Mothers little helper’ and ‘Under my thumb’ there weren’t any consistent tracks. Yeah there was some interesting instrumentation dotted around which was somewhat original, but the Stones’ kinda default is that plodding old school blues which just doesn’t get me going and there is still a fair amount of on here. Also Mick Jaggers vocals get a bit irritating for my liking after a while, he definitely has his limits as a vocalist. So yeah, it’s OK, but wouldn’t revisit.

It's alright, not many bangers just blues

Music is good - Beatles, Who-esque. Lyrics are extremely dated and chauvinistic. Paint It Black is the exception!

Good stuff, solid stones.

Interesting musical influences, and further proof mick was never a good singer

I like The Rolling Stones. I don't like mick jaggers love for younger women but . I do like this album sort of

Its okay. There are times it gets interesting for a period, then goes back to 12 bar blues Under My Thumb, while lyrically terrible, is musically interesting. The album is better in the non guitar focused parts Out of time is the best song

Not as enjoyable as some of the later stuff that I know and love. Out of Time is a tune however. I think it needed a bit more variation to justify its runtime. Simpsons: Yes

It was alright, not bad not great. Paint it Black is a great song to start the album off. Worth noting however, that I listened to the US version of the album that includes Paint it Black and is a shorter album length than the UK release.

Revolver came our the same year as this and pisses all over it.

They're the epitome of 3*. They have the highest floor and lowest ceiling of anybody on here.

It has some standout songs (in the US version): “Paint it Black”, “Lady Jane”, and “I’m waiting”. However this albums does change my opinion. I still don’t vibe with th Rolling Stones.

meh 6/10

6/10 fun listen.

Paint It Black is an amazingly unique track but it belied a pretty average, straight-laced album.

The ultimate singles band. Couple of the tunes on here are total bangers, but the majority are deeply forgettable. Pleasant sound, relaxing blues vibe, nothing offensive, but nothing to write home about.

I think there are two versions of this album? I listened to the version without 'Paint it Black' because of this album cover...which bummed me out at first because I really like that particular song - but the alternative opener here 'Mother's Little Helper' was honestly great and easily the best song here. It has that subtly ominous vocal and riff combo that reminds me a lot of 'Paint it Black' - it's almost like the same song from a different universe or something. I think this is a cool album: but it dips in quality really fast - to the point where I'd say the first three tracks including the bitter 'Stupid Girl' and tranquil 'Lady Jane' are where this album peaks. I wasn't a huge fan of the long song off this album 'Going Home', it felt sort of hollow despite the addictive jam direction it goes into in its second half. 'Out of Time' is another highlight here...it has probably the sickest bassline on the whole album and also contains this album's closest thing to actual "harmonies". Which is funny, because while it's certainly Rock N' Roll in essence, this album's sounds and structures are quite poppy sounding and accessible. I really liked 'I Am Waiting' for that exact reason - it's super catchy and melodically sweet. While I do think it picks up some steam in its final few songs, the entire album comes off as pretty directionless to me. I think that's how I feel about the Rolling Stones' sound in general, but I think this sort of messy and all-over-the-place country-pop-rock presentation goes over way better on later releases like 'Sticky Fingers'.

Boooring

that second song damn 💀 why such haters lol it’s a bop, not exactly my style but i was bopping my head and leg so 🤷‍♀️

Paint it Black out of the gates shows the level these guys were at compared to their peers. Then they show the year on track 2 with Stupid Girl. Still a little edgy, but never bound to be a hit. The other hit (Under My Thumb) is an obvious banger, but the rest of the album will be the rating. Pretty much classic Stones. Pithy lyrics, great harmonica, simply chords, etc. Like it, but not up there with my fav Stones albums, like Out of Our Heads.

Had to listen to it all day and it finally grew on me, a little. But I just wish I was listening to The Beatles.

I almost like Mother’s Little Helper, Goin’ Home, What to Do

Not bad. A bit boring for me but I can see the appeal. Would definitely enjoy it more if I was in the swinging 60s

With the exception of the last track, I appreciate how it’s consistent and straight up, rather than the weird LCD progressive arrangement a band like The Beatles would do. It’s not an album I would put on, but an important album for many.

Can't say in a fan of The Stones, but. There's 2 songs on this album that I really do love, Paint it Black and Under my Thumb, shout out to Lady Jane also. Those 3 tracks stand out mainly due to Brian Jones experimentation on different instrument, Sitar on Paint it Black defines that song, Xylophone or Marimba, Dulcimer also, (mad instrument, amazing sound) Otherwise this album is mehh, the other tracks just aren't for me, and often repetitive. Was alright

A decent album, not the Stones' best work, bit back and forth through out. Feels a lot more rebellious than their contemporaries, but not quite punk. A definite breakaway from Rock and Roll into just plain Rock.

On the plus side, all of the songs are original compositions. I mean, as opposed to the first Rolling Stones album. This one has one of my favorite tracks "Paint It, Black" which seems like it's in almost every Vietnam War movie. Some of the songs feel a bit Spinal Tap-like to me, like "Going Home". I know the Stones songs came first, but it gives you an idea of what I think of when I hear the Stones. Always cool to hear a xylophone in a rock song ("Under My Thumb"). Their "hits" are the hits for a reason. The rest? Not so much. Top tracks: "Paint It, Black", "Stupid Girl", "Under My Thumb"

If my kids asked me who is better, the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, I can confidently say the Beatles. This is the second Stones album that I'm going to give a 3. I acknowledge that this was their first album of all original material, so kudos to that. The dawn of a new era. But this album was just kind of boring. And when it wasn't boring, it was super misogynistic. And that includes Under My Thumb (a classic). I mean, write with a little more subtlety, no? (ahem, Stupid Girl) And I don't really count Paint it Black as being part of this album because it's not part of the original UK release, but the altered one to win US hearts. I love that song, but even it wouldn't bump this album up to a 4. I did enjoy Out of Time and Think a fair bit. And I didn't mind the super long Going Home. But the rest was a bit ho hum. Don't get me wrong, these guys have some epic albums. But this wasn't one of them.

This album is ok. Some great Songs but some boring blues ones too

Paint it Black is iconic, but I also really enjoyed Under My Thumb

It’s hard for me to rate this higher than a 3. Even though Paint It Black and Under My Thumb are banger classics, and this was the first record of the band recording all original material, it would be tough giving it a 4 based solely on the hope/possibility that we’ll see other albums of theirs that are better. They sure do love their women. But, they sure don’t as well (hello Stupid Girl). I guess a stone stopped in its track equals a woman scorned.

Pretty average album, another one on the list that makes me wonder why we need several from bands like this and not just their best 2-3.

Apparently there is a UK and US version that are slightly different. UK is missing Paint it Black which is a huge drag on the album as I think that’s one of the best stones songs. So I included it in my review. Under My Thumb is another iconic song. The rest of the album just didn’t really grab me. What’s the deal with Stupid Girl…yikes. Also, right before Mick starts singing on Flight 505 the piano hits the Start Me Up riff. They kept that one in the back pocket for 15 years. Dig some Stones…a couple generational songs…but just not enough for me to go 4. Let’s go 3.5 with the round down.

Some iconic songs on here but the rest of the album is just ok

I saw Loobis’s review so I listened to Paint it Black from the US version in addition to the UK album. Paint it Black is good. Nothing else really stood out. Sounded old.

idk this wasn't doing it for me, like I kinda tuned it out but not bc it was bad just bc it wasn't interesting.

Apparently paint it black is only on the US version and I listened to the uk version. With that this is a low 4, but it’s a 3 without

This is where the Rolling Stones really became the Rolling Stones we came to know, with some absolute classic songs on here. With that being said, the Stones have never really appealed to me all that much outside of their most well-known material. This is one of their better albums, though. Key tracks: Paint It Black (only on the US version) Lady Jane Under My Thumb Out of Time

It's fine, some good tracks but I still feel they're a "greatest hits" band for me. Just didn't get a buzz for it.

Decent album, songs are horrible especially the iconic paint it black but nothing to necessarily amazing

Hát, a Paint It Blacket leszámítva e nélkül az album nélkül hiánytalanul le tudnám élni az életemet.

Odio el sistema de 5 estrellas

Classics with a bit of country vibe towards the end

5/14 adds

I’m a big Stones fan and I had never listened to this album, but of course knew the singles. Paint it Black is one of my favorites, but the rest of the album was pretty “meh” for me. Although Under My Thumb is catchy, the misogynistic lyrics leave me a bit cold. I liked a couple of the more bluesy numbers, but it’s an album I probably won’t listen to again. For me, the Stones sweet spot was 1968 through 1972, starting from Beggars Banquet through Exile on Main Street. I thought that Aftermath fell well short of any of those efforts.

I’ll assume I’m rating the UK version, which is a pity because the US version has “Paint It Black” on it - a superior song to the also great “Mother’s Little Helper,” which inexplicably is only on the UK version. Sadly, neither song can prevent my disgust with the second track, “Stupid Girl,” and several subsequent songs about misogyny. The 11 minute blues jam “Goin’ Home” is worth a listen, as it pushed the stereotypical limits on a song. This record reminded me that the Stones, at their core, are not just a blues band, but a country-blues band.

Blues generated

Positively suprised Favorite songs: Paint it, black, High and Dry

I've already listened to it but We'll try her again Overall Just as good as I rember, I'm not a big stones guy but this one is always a classic

A classic 60s rock sound where u get songs that aren't rock at all (by what we would call it) and others that have the hint of what was to come

Having a U.S. and a U.K. version of this confuses things somewhat, but it’s the U.S. version I prefer, which omits a few songs from the U.K. version, and adds ‘Paint It Black’ (Yay!). Unfortunately, both versions still contain ‘Lady Jane’.

Pretty great, although I'd call "Stupid Girl" problematic by modern standards.

Paint it black kinda stole the album, but other explorations into soundscape

There are some excellent songs on this album. Mother's Little Helper is the best but Lady Jane and Under My Thumb are noteworthy as well. The album shows where the Stones would be heading with their following albums. There are some nice moments elsewhere on the album too, but as it stands, this album overall is just good, not great.

Fun album, lots of quotables, feels very 60s but also very modern.

Pretty good 7/10

Started with a bang with Paint it black, but went downhill from there. Favorite track: Paint it black other picks: mothers little helper, little jane, flight 505

I'm not a big Stones fan, but I recognize the merits of this album. From today's point of view, the lyrics are mostly way off, but that was another era. Musically, one can see that the Stones were trying to evolve, experimenting with different instruments and kinds of sounds, like many others at that time.

Growing up as a kid in the 70’s and 80’s you had to make important choices - Sega or Nintendo, Spectrum or Commodore and then later in life Take That or East 17! I am guessing that’s what it was like in the 60’s. Beatles or Stones and my parents were definitely in the Beatles camp. So I wasn’t really exposed to them and haven’t really sort to seek them out, choosing myself to listen to the Beatles. So imagine my horror when it is suggested to me I need to listen to a Rolling Stones Album. Well I didn’t have to fear it, they are actually quite good, still not as good as the Beatles though….hehe

Its fine. I will never put it on again. I'm neither a Rolling Stones' hater nor a stan but its too bad you can't just listen to Hot Rocks. Either way when I wanna listen to some Stones I'll put on Exile on Main Street first, Sticky Fingers second, Let if Bleed third and Beggar's Banquet in a pinch

Never heard this one all the way through and it seems to me that the Stones took some time to hit their peak as a band. After a few albums of covers, this was the first of solely original compositions but I don't think they reached their heights until Beggars Banquet personally. There are some decent tracks here and some less great ones (notably the tedious ELEVEN minute Going Home). Rating this on its merits, not its signs of potential, and I don't think it's any better than 3*.

3 out of 5. While this album is probably where the Stones started to get good some of these songs still sound meh, and it's a shame Paint It Black wasn't included with this UK release.

3 - I listened to the American version out of protest to the damn British bias of this list, as always with 60s stuff, there’s one or two songs that stood the test of time, but most deserve to be forgotten.

never been a big stones guy, this album did little to change that

Has Paint It Black, there's a UK Version without it

The Stones made a lot of records and Aftermath is one of them. I listened to the UK version which puts that 11 minute long blues dork jam at the end of the first side.

Sounds like the Stones. Early, trippy psychedelic, rocking Stones, with a strange mix of social commentary and misogyny. A product of the times I suppose. No excuses, just that a lot of these lyrics would be shut down these days before they were released. Anyway, the music is decent. Iconic and memorable, but musically and lyrically it's out of time. (See what I did there?) Three little yellow stars.

The Stones were not really into ladies for this one.

No le di escucha atenta esta vez

Like so many RS albums, this is extremely uneven with a handful of really great songs, the ones where they delve in psych sounds, incorporate the exotic instruments of the empire, and create some incredible vibey grooves. Under My Thumb is such a good track spoiled by its extremely fucked lyrics, White Room is an all time great rock song, Mothers Little Helper a fun jaunty ode to meth, Out of Time is a pure Motown rip off but an incredibly poignant one performaned with amazing charisma. And that bass! But there's so much filler in their pretty generic honky tonk blues mode. Nobody needs Going Home's 11 minutes of them pretending to be Delta Blues guys, or the boring chuga chuga Chuck Berry stuff like It's Not Easy or High and Dry. It's frustrating listenting to them trying to write the material they'd just been covering up to this point, instead of writing more original stuff that they're actually way better at. They just released way too much music for a decade and lots of it sort of sucks. They are the quintissential greatest hits band.

Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.

A few great Stones cuts on this album.

Quite a substantial step down from THE Rolling Stones albums. Meant as no criticism due to the quality of their later bodies of work. Still a formative piece of music for one of the greatest to ever do it.

You get what you expect going into this - nothing more or less ....

decent imo 3/5 a few good songs but overall kinda meh... didnt think anything was really special about this album

Average Stones album, bar Paint it Black, is still average.

This was boring. The Stones are a mid band. A few good songs but the rest is just meh. I honestly dunno how long they'll legitimately stand the test of the time.

Pretty good, enjoyed it but it weirdly felt a little dated? Perhaps the quality of the audio? I also felt like the playing wasn't that tight.

So the music and melodies are great. And Paint It Black is a classic. I want to say the lyrics didn't age well but they weren't well received when first released. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5

This was a solid album where you can really tell that the band had superstardom in their future. I loved the Under My Thumb track. Mick has a great front man quality and give the band its punch here.

Fake Americana always rubs me weird Good music weird lyrics Paint it black slaps

Rock N Roll Neil Young is the best Neil Young

Fine album. Not a huge fan of the Stones and Mick Jagger but it is what it is. A bit confused with the difference in the UK and US album versions so I'm not sure which one I should be ranking. 5.5/10 (2.75/5)

Just not as good as Let It Bleed

# 281 : I don't mind a bit of old school rolling stones, though this is not their best work, still better then the rubbish this list has dealt me the last few weeks. Fav Track : Out Of Time

Not bad. Not their best though

Paint it Black is such a good song and just matches the mood of this week for me. The rest is okay. Wanted to really like more songs since the first one is so good, but them's the breaks I guess. 3/5

enjoyable enough listen but nothing special and started to get old like 40 minutes in

Under My Thumb är bra. Annars är det ganska lika. Inget jag går igång på. Skulle säga att jag nog varit Team Beatles när det begav sig.

Under my thumb är ju riktigt bra.

Any time The Rolling Stones comes on, I roll my eyes a bit… always found them a bit overrated. They are a solid band, sure, and have stuck around. They do their blues-rock well, but lyrically it’s not aged well. The Spotify link sends the listener to the UK version, which eliminates their greatest hit “Paint it Black”.. To me this was ok but not great

Stones,.

It was ok, some notable songs.

For me, it's "Paint It, Black" and "Goin' Home" but not much else here. Still, it's The Stones.

A few good songs, some were surprisingly heavy on the bass guitar.

Gosh.. How do you rate an album with one of the greatest songs (Paint it Black), a song that is quite questionable in content (Under my Thumb) and a bunch of crap honkey tonk / filler?

Interesting earlier album from these guys. A few classics on it and alotta southern influenced bluesy type stuff.

Not bad, but it ain't Some Girls

Not many opinions on this either, pretty standard

I’m a big fan of the Stones but I was a bit underwhelmed by this album. Even the US version with Paint it Black didn’t wow me

Songs:great. Misogyny:not such

Found it interesting that the UK version was almost completely different. Also interesting to listen to this with 2024 eyes and hear the clear influences from Black American music and the lyrics harkening to a very different era of womanhood.

Thoughts before listening: I believe this is an earlier Stones album, and while I tend to mainly listen to their Exile/Sticky Fingers era, I do love a lot of their early songs. I don't know whats on this album, but I'm sure I'll enjoy this. Review: Ok. I think I was thrown off by the alternative cover used on this site. Once I opened this on Spotify I immediately recognized the album. Kicking off with "Paint It Black" means this album starts with one of my favorite songs of all time. I love that this song utilizes psychedelic/middle Eastern sounds. I love that there's an energy that borders on proto-punk. I love the weird little guitar riff that runs under the verses. I just love the song. It would be hard to top such a strong opener as "Paint It Black", and for the most part, Aftermath proves this to be true. That being said, there are some definite highlights here i.e. "Under My Thumb". I also learned about the different UK version (which actually uses the cover on this site) and it includes a couple of my favorite early Stones songs in "Mother's Little Helper" and "Out of Time". In general, I think the Stones were just still a singles band at this time, and while this was their first album of all originals, they were still a few years away from releasing true masterpieces. The good songs on here are enough to get a 3-star rating, but overall this isn't my favorite.

Biased rating, whatever

I love their later stuff way more. Early Stones is a little meh, but it’s still the damn Stones

A couple of classics, a lot of standard 12 bar blues and some godawful stereo production putting instruments in each ear (drums only on the left? What were they thinking of). I get they were influential and this is part of their journey but I'm not sure it's a classic.

Pretty good but like the other rolling stones album I've listened to on this list a lot of the songs feel quite repetitive. Low 3.

Starts off really strong

it was good , like classic rock

I was excited to see this one start off with "Paint it Black". That is one of my favorite songs since the old Twisted Metal days (yes I know it was around like 40 years earlier too) but it wasn't until that game that I really appreciated the darkness of it. Then the album jumps right into other genres and kind of takes the weight of the darkness away with some lighter songs. Kind of like if an Soggy Bottom boys track comes up on a Sabbath album. Not really comparing the Stones to Sabbath, but that particular song is just out of place for the rest, and to my disappointment. Overall it is a fine album, probably a little better than sticky fingers for me, but still I'm more of a greatest hits Stones fan. Favorite track "Paint it Black" 3/5

Overall, I am no longer comfortable with how much I used to like the Stones. I can see their importance of these records in their time, and I enjoy the newer stuff still... but man I'm glad rock and roll has moved beyond what this is.

Good, but not amazing. Two chart toppers & a couple of good B-Sides, that's about it.

Not their best. Stones Bangers of course, the rest was dated and not at all special.

Not my favourite stones, but pretty good all the same.

Meh, a bit underwhelming. 2.5/5

Rolling Stones Under my thumb is cool. Going home was my favorite a bit long but cool that it stays on a groove for a while. Don’t like stupid girl or lady Jane Out of time is kinda nice 60’s pop tune but too long The marimba is kinda of a nice touch. I feel like maybe the stones are overrated or I want to like it more than I do.

Are the stones mid?? This project has made me realize I don’t like the stones as much as I thought Under my thumb is cool but I prefer the live version from still life Really hated lady Jane I think they are actually a pretty bad band that managed to make a few great sounding records

pretty by the numbers early 'Stones

Het album natuurlijk van Paint It, Black en Under My Thumb.

Outside of a few songs this is not that good. I’ll never understand the world wide obsession with this mediocre band.

Outside of the few enduring hits it is pretty middle of the road.

Stones were the Foo Fighters of their time, the singles are good to great but you’d have to shut your brain off to get through anything else.

Rating: 5.5/10 Would be a two-star album without Under My Thumb and Paint It Black, the rest of it is not that interesting.

Bit boring from a band with far better songs than these

A Stones album that is almost entirety devoid of bangers is weird, but it's still fine

It doesn't measure up to some of their later albums, still pretty good though.

Couple of good songs, overall not their best work. Not sure what the hell they were doing on some of these tracks.

UK vs US version.

After I listened to the complete album it seemed that the interesting innovative songs were all on the front half of the album and all of the more boring traditional Rolling Stones blues in the back half. I enjoyed the instrumental and songwriting explorations of "Paint it Black", and "Lady Jane". Doesn't feel as groundbreaking or essential as an album from The Beatles, particularly Revolver which came out the same year, but it did show that The Rolling Stones weren't only capable of Rhythm and Blues and could stretch a bit more. "Going Home" could have been trimmed without sacrificing the essential. All in all a few high spots here and there but ultimately a middling album, particularly knowing what kinds of things they will go to record later.

I...I get it. But I'm still not impressed.

Paint it Black is a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ track on ⭐️⭐️⭐️ album. Too many dodgy lyrics on some tracks, in my opinion - this has lowered its rating.

Interesting listen as I'd never heard this album before. It sums The Stones up for me, Jumping Jack(?) flashes of brilliance but otherwise just average. They sound so cool on Paint It Black and Under My Thumb but clunky elsewhere and the songs aren't great. To be fair I think their best albums came a few years later.

This album definitely loses steam after a really strong start with an absolute classic to open. Also feels pretty dated for the most part and doesn’t hold up amazingly, but has some great moments.

A solid album. I like a few tracks by the Rolling Stones but for some reason I can’t get that into them, so this was probably the first album of theirs I’ve listened to the whole way through. Paint It, Black is obviously a classic and rightly so. I’d like it if more of the album was this dark - a few tracks were more generic rock and roll which were ok but not that memorable. Under My Thumb and Lady Jane are very good. The closing track was too long and trailed off into a jam with some sleazy ad libs from Jagger that I didn’t care much for. A good listen all in all, and a nice way to close week 2! Favourite track: Paint It, Black

Opened straight into an absolute banger but then got steadily more boring.

A few bangers but not their best as an overall album.

As expected

I don't like Jagger's voice.

Pretty good

not bad

Pretty alright album although it kind of peeks with first track

Day 2. An album I have been familiar with for over 40 years since I first heard it in 1981 (my 17th birthday) A transitional Stones album with a more British feel and Jagger and Richards really starting to develop as songwriters. A bold step to include a lengthy jam too. Some filler, but the Stones’ filler was always quality!

One really great song and a bunch of forgettable ones.

There were some good moments on this, but it's a little more sparse compared to sticky fingers. I like some of the darker gothic-pop moments on the album, but it's spread out amongst some quite tedious blues tunes, a lot of which lack energy behind them. Best Track: Under My Thumb Worst Track: Going Home

A bit of a bop, would be good at a dinner party.

Not my thing.

hmmmmm im not obsessed with this.... its sort of boring and repetitive. Like definitely not bad but if this is contemporary with Rubber Soul i definitely prefer that album.

Starting the record with Paint It Black, one of the greatest songs ever written, certainly sets the bar high for the rest of the album. Unfortunately, it underwhelms. That's not to say there are no other good songs; I Am Waiting and Flight 505 are both solid, and Under My Thumb is a certified classic. But everything else is average at best and a disappointment relative to my standards of the Rolling Stones.

This feels like the Stones’ transition into their psychedelic period. It’s incredibly uneven but there’s some great forward thinking material here

Some easy listeners but none I was familiar with.

paint it black crazy guete song eternal blabla. sitar beatles george harrison-effekt. stupid girl, ääh öööh äääh. isches ironieee??? findi chli whack lady jane cute, sehr medieval. under my thumb funny marimba und recht geili fuzz gitarre links. recht guete song, ultra misogyn. doncha bother me afoch meh son rocknroll song, au wenn slide giti funny. think isch nöd de aretha aber rechts cooli fuzz gitarre i like. flight 505 het au wieder fuzz bass ding. aber isch afoch chuck berry de song oder? high and dry isch cute, s crash links isch mit de ziit grating. its not easy au wieder rocknroll time. im wikipedia artikel wird das album die ganz ziit mit rubber soul vergliche, gsehni vorallem weg de sitar und so. aber rubber soul caret nöd für das und ich bin afoch en beatles guy. i am waiting hani etz no nice gfunde. going home het nöd möse 11 minute sii. hui isch das öpis vom beste vode stones? paint it black wär nödmol uf de UK version druf.

The album started really strong, but then dropped off

After a few albums of Stones on this list... I still don't have anything to hang onto. Jagger's voice maybe. But there isn't any other spark.

The songs aren't bad, but my goodness the lyrics have aged poorly

Never bothered with the early albums, but I quite liked this one

While the actual music was more interesting and varied than on “Sticky Fingers,” most of the lyrics were so insipid that I had a hard time taking the album seriously. That said, the album also includes “Paint It Black,” so I can’t go as low as 2 stars.

Mmmmm. Moments of brilliance mixed in with some horrible lyrics and some dated sounds. They can write some catchy tunes tunes tho. 2.5/5

A couple of really nice tracks, but lacking the punch required for a classic record. Fave track: Out of Time

Good record - catchy tunes and developing of a cool style. Maybe not a knock out from beginning to end but pretty damn decent. Fave track: Under My Thumb

Paint it, Black was almost lightning in a bottle, such a fucking great song it made the rest of the album sound sort of mediocre? Just Blaise after the fact, 2.7

2nd listen. I don’t want to give every Rolling Stones album a 2 (I think I gave Exile on Main Street a 3) so I guess this is a 3. The only song I really like, Paint It Black, has really grown off of me so I just didn’t really enjoy this, but it’s not bad.

Yeah! I can dig this.

Mostly forgettable bluesy nonsense with a dash of good songwriting thrown in. Greatly overshadowed by "Paint it Black" but apparently that song's not even in the real version?????

I've never listened to this album straight through. I understand it's their first album to contain all original songs. I really like a lot of their later stuff, so I will be interested in hearing where they started. There are many recognizable songs here. This was a fun listen but certainly not my favorite from The Rolling Stones. 3/5

Really, the album the Rolling Stones started displaying all of their sexy swagger and provocateur demeanor. That said, for every other undeniable hit, the album hits you with a breather or two that only break up the pace, meandering about, being somewhat lacklustre.

This album had a strong start, but progressively decreased in quality. The last song was way too long and pretty annoying. Most of the album was mediocre.

Paint it Black is obviously an incredible song. In my opinion, it's also the only incredible song on the album. There wasn't much here of note for me, and the incredibly overt sexism through me off. 2.75/5

An ok album

Paint It Black is so good, and Under My Thumb is so, so bad

Classic. Just never had much attraction to the Stones.

Album Nr. 77 Nicht wirklich schlecht. Aber dem Album geht, vereinfacht gesagt, die Puste aus.

Not their best work, but there still delivering in what was their 4th (?) studio album.

Nice!!!

Your average Stones album. Everyone does their part but it doesnt rise above mediocrity for me. I'd give it a 3.5 if possible, I listened to it straight through, no breaks, can appreciate it for the most part. Under My Thumb is great though.

Maybe I’m just not the biggest Stones fan. I at least knew a couple songs on this album but overall it was just okay. They must have some albums that are spectacular though right?

Nope. 3

Loved it and hated it. Some song (Paint It Black) are outstanding while others (Going Home) are annoying AF.

Lite besviken faktiskt men vissa låtar är riktigt bra så det gör inget

Pretty good yeah

Solid 3.5

Some great tracks, and some complete misses. Minus 1 start for the 10 minutes of nonsense in going home

I listened to the UK version of this (and then Paint It Black ofc). The vocals are really dominant. These songs are quite boring... I like their energy though :) Probably very impressive for its time, but I'm just bored listening to it now. Paint It Black is amazing though...

Plods along merrily with a few stand out tracks.

Its OK. One of their better ones

Why the hell was paint it, black left off the UK version? Madness

good record, I had not heard mother's little helper in decades lol.

Not there best but a fee good songs

favourite song: paint it black so i listened to paint it black, then listened to the uk version in full. i shouldve done paint it black last because nothing else quite lived up to it and this album felt loooong

Mother's little helper

Really demonstrated Rolling Stones blues credentials

The crazy tonal shift from Stupid Girl (spiteful, misogynistic) to Lady Jane (respectful, regal) is crazy. Why tf would I listen to the UK version that doesn’t have Paint It Black on there??? Whack suggestion. Most everything else here stays within the lines of the stones stuff for this time - a little honkytonk, a little bluesy stuff, rock, slight instrumental experimentation. Solid

I listened to both the American and English releases of this album. Liked the American better. The English version tended to drag on a bit. There are some great songs on this album. Cool to hear some of the musical elements that became central to the Rollings Stones’ future sound on this early record

A good not great album. A couple great songs, mostly good songs, some okay.

Mother’s Little Helper, Under My Thumb, and Out of Time are really good. The rest is pretty forgettable.

I guess the hits are the hits for a reason. With the exception of I Am Waiting, the remainder of the non-singles are pretty much forgettable. 3 stars on the strength of the good ones alone.

I think if I were more of a Stones historian this would've done more for me but there were just so many points where I forgot I was listening to anything at all.

The beginning of the Stones really sounding like the Stones. Recording is still a little rough, although Brian Jones' use of whatever instruments were around lifts the sound into something fresher than most of their contemporaries.

I listened to Beggars Banquet a few days ago and wasn't the biggest fan. This album was more enjoyable a listen for me. Pretty simple and a bit long, but not bad. 3/5.

Better than that blues album of theirs

Pretty good album

Besides the popular songs, Meg.

The UK version didnt have Paint it Black (track 1 on US version). Its ok as a blues early Stones period example.

The beginning of the Stones really sounding like the Stones. Recording is still a little rough, although Brian Jones' use of whatever instruments were around lifts the sound into something fresher than most of their contemporaries. Going home is waaaaay too long, just a noodly blues jam. It shows the beginning of their dynamic playing style and playing off each other, but I'm not sure we needed 11 minutes of a under baked idea. I think I prefer either their earlier less polished and more bluesy records, or their later material where they are more confident in their own thing. And the misogyny is staggering. Women are either berated and belittled, subjugated, or raised onto pedestals (setting them up for failure?) I'm really not sure I could listen to this frequently.

It's got two of my favorite singles from the Stones ever but the rest didn't grab me that hard.

#2 The Rolling Stones - Aftermath (1966) Blues Rock British Rhythm & Blues, Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues The Stones' Rubber Soul is definitely a far cry from the actual Rubber Soul. While I appreciate the experimentation on display here, the aimless songs and concerningly large amount of misogyny (???) keeps it from truly being a *good* album. Sure was a different time. Favourite Track: Out of Time Least Favourite Track: Stupid Girl

It's the album "Paint it Black" is on. While that song is a classic, the rest of the album is just okay.

Well, classic stones. Mother's Little Helper was nice, and as problematic as Under My Thumb's lyrics are, as nice is the instrumental. Felt like the second half wasn't as good as the first one. Paint It Black would have been nice. And Going Home was way, way too long. All in all... not bad but also not outstanding

eh. meh. bwah. *blows raspberry* this album is fine. early-era rebellious rock music from the original pioneers of that sound. i know that the rolling stones have done better than this though. much much better. it's not to say this album is bad, it's just serviceable.

Some of the classic hits on this one, some of the other tracks though seem a bit ‘trying to fit in with the times’ vibe about them.

#134. I'm pretty sure I was under the impression that the Rolling Stones were one of the rock and roll greats, but actually listening to their albums has me questioning that opinion, because none of them seem to be particularly great. 3/5: it's OK at best

There's a lot more misses than hits from this Rolling Stones album. It shows the future potential of the group, but somehow most of the album feels like filler. Best Songs: Paint it Black, Under My Thumb Worst Songs: Stupid Girl, I Am Waiting

Decent Stones, like other stuff from them better but nice to hear some classics.

Shocked by how boring I found this one apart from Paint It Black. I think I am simultaneously too young and too old for The Rolling Stones.

Not really that interesting for me

This one of those albums where the UK version differs markedly from the US version - I played the UK version. This is the first album where Jagger-Richards were the writers of all the songs, and it foreshadows the four truly great Stones albums. The lyrical themes tend towards casual and vindictive sexism at times, which to modern ears isn't so great. Still, it's a good album with many strong songs. 3/5

Far from the best Stones album but also very far from their worst. An important adjustment in their approach, expanding their sound with some psychedelia and veering from straight pop rock. Mothers Helper immediately lets everyone know The Stones are dipping into the psych. Under My Thumb is a classic, such a standout opening. Going Home wasn’t particularly great but it was neat to see the Stones experiment with a wandering bluesy 11 minute jam. Stupid Girl is a bit rough but I suppose this was 1966, released before the last Leafs cup win, so I guess that can be forgiven. Really easy listen overall, Strong album but not their best, just the beginning. 3.5 stars

didn’t think i liked the stones but i liked this alright

I’m sure I’m in the minority but I think the ‘experimental pop’ side of the Rolling Stones (as heard on Mother’s Little Helper and Under My Thumb) is one of the more interesting features of their discography. It sounds like Brian Jones deserves most of the credit for this? I was looking forward to a whole album in this vein, but I got maybe half of one. There’s the usual smattering of unremarkable blues numbers, but there are moments of melodic inspiration and unusual instrumentation too.

It's okay they have better albums

man their early shit is weird, idk I kinda had fun I guess but a lot of this was just not it they didn't know what they were doing yet

That weird transitional period for the Stones, from when they were releasing an album of mostly old blues covers to what would become The Rolling Stones we know and love. And this is made muddier by having two separate UK & US releases (I listened to the UK edition, it's the artwork provided above) where you have two seperate track listings with two good good songs (UK: "Mother's Little Helper" & "Under My Thumb"; US: "Paint It Black" & the aforementioned "Under My Thumb") and a lot of filler... Sometimes overly long filler like "Goin' Home" which is just an 11 minute long jam session. Brian Jones is a tour de force here, he'd pick up any old thing laying around and make it work, so for that this album represents a more mature Stones sound. But 1966 was a hard year for many bands, we got Revolver by The Beatles and Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys and everything else was fighting for a very, very distant third place.

Under My Thumb was the only song on this album I'd heard before and I still dig it, though it's not my favorite Stones song. The others are just ok - not exactly my taste. I respect their vibe but probably wouldn't come back to this album if I'm honest.

I messed up and listened to a different version of this album. The US version maybe? Either way, the album I listened to started with "Paint it Black," which is obviously an awesome song. My son described it as Halloween music. Must have sounded spooky! Loved the mono version of Lady Jane, very sweet and melodic. "Stupid Girl" was hard to listen to because of the way Mick Jagger says the song's title. The rest of the songs are cool, new instruments are added, and have a distinct late 50s and 60s vibe. I get the hype.

Prima lekker geluisterd. Paint it black wel beste

These 80+ old guys used to be a boy-band. And an international symbol for "sexy bad boys". And it shows, hence, the predatory-ish lyrics. Still enjoyed most of it. But definitely a product of its time.

The Rolling Stones took the album template, experimentation, and world music influence of The Beatles' 'Rubber Soul' and ran with it. They did so with a lot more edge and grit. If parents hated Lennon and McCartney, Jagger and Richards were probably a nightmare. Their best song from the era, 'Paint It Black', is sadly missing from the original UK edition but there are still plenty of standout songs here. I have mixed opinions about The Rolling Stones but I think this is one of their better works. Unfortunately there's also a lot of misogyny that ruins would have otherwise been a very good album.

I’m surprised/not surprised at how misogynistic this album is. Lots of danceable beats, and Think is a fun listen that I don’t think I’ve heard before.

There's some great tracks on here, but there's also a lot of generic filler. I don't think it really recovered after the rubbish 11 minute track smack bang in the middle of the album. Who thought that was a good idea? It completely kills all the momentum. The mix is really low and strange for much of the record too. A generous 3/5

Gave this a really good listen. I generally dont like the rolling stones. Some of their popular songs are catchy, most of them annoying, which is why I havent explored their catalog deeper. I can really hear the influenced by the blues as evidenced by Doncha Bother Me, High and Dry, Going home. But all in all this still sounds like the rolling stones. None of the instruments sound apart from the others, they blend together to create noise. Maybe its a sign of the time, that was the best recording could do. But it doesnt sound good to me.

Paint it Black is an iconic song. The rest is alright, but not much I would return to on this one.

Par dobrih al zapravo dosta slabo. Vise popasti rock nego rock kak ih uvijek spominju.

Not much of a Stones fan, but there are a lot of hits on this one.
