Reviews (page 11 of 12)

tapped out. decent window into the time but there's gotta be a thousand other albums i find more interesting

Just two songs were up my alley.

Overall, this was another boring experience brought to you by one of the allegedly best groups of all time. I'm starting to think The Rolling Stones are like The Doors in that they're a better singles band than a producer of comprehensively great albums. My evidence: The two best songs on this album are on two different versions of it. This makes each version inferior to the other and forces the listener to track down the missing single. In that regard, I have yet to hear on this list a must hear ALBUM by this group.

This album is very whimsical-sounding, it's kind of nice but at the same time when the entire album is like this, it gets stale. I am just really under whelmed by this album. It has nice pop melodies and all, but I can't get into it. My second Rolling Stones album (Let It Bleed was first), still not impressed.

it's OK. Still don't really like the stones.

It's hard to believe people got tear-gassed over this album, but that's the hard part about looking at albums through a modern lens. Rock has gotten so much harder and abrasive - but considering when this album came out, and the dominant cultural attitudes surrounding it I could see how young adults of the 60s would go wild over it. This album is just as much against the dominant culture as it is *of* it. Songs like "Stupid Girl" don't challenge any wider attitudes about the perception of women at the time, but it is hilarious to listen to that song followed by the much more "loving" song "Lady Jane." (Continuing the tradition of weed being personified as a woman) This album really makes you think about what gets called "counterculture." It certainly sits in contrast to the popular crooners of the time, but what is countercultrual about hypermasculinity? Its interesting when counterculture is looked at during this time it is particularly centered around class, but gender and race are relagated to their own categories of rebellion. Sonically, the album is very interesting - no two songs sound alike but they are still cohesive together. You can hear the band experimenting with different sounds , and the heavy blues influence can be heard especially on songs like "Doncha Bother Me," but they feel a bit bland compared to their inspirations. Songs like "Goin Home" kind of drone on, but eventually get interesting. It is funny to read about band members using "strange" instruments like a sitar or marimbas. This might be particularly harsh but this feels like the Ed Sheeran method - taking "strange" instruments from around the world to serve as seasoning for pretty basic pop tracks, but not doing much else.

I listened to the US Version with "Paint it Black" as the leadoff track. This is probably the least impressive Stones album I've heard so far, but that's not to say it's doesn't carry some merit. This is definitely a transitional album, as they are beginning to stray from the typical 60's British rock sound and incorporating elements of what would come on later albums. Highlights: "Under My Thumb"

Stupid girl is so old school mean lol DNF

Can pretty safely say I am not a Stones fan. Jagger keeps singing about little girls

Paint it black is great. Otherwise, it doesn’t feel like they’ve arrived quite yet.

Didn't find it that interesting and a little shit

gostei nao

not horrible just extremely mid, disappointing and boring at times paint it, black is good but thats about it, forgot the rest already

I haven't listened to the Stones aside from their biggest singles, but it's surprising to me to read that Paint It, Black came out around this same timeframe. None of the songs on this are all that interesting to me.

si ok sono gli stones, lo so... solo che son molto più abituata a let it bleed

Dey aight

The that this album is mentioned in the same breath as Rubber Soul is an absolute travesty.

not as bad as i expected

Bro lmao what, ok, Paint it Black and Under My Thumb are alltimer songs but the album itself is, well, it’s the Stones

The Rolling Stones have quite a few hits (none on this album though) that I enjoy but since Its from a generation before me (and almost before my parents) I don't have any nostalgia for it. While I can understand what they did historically for music as a whole and all the artists they inspired its not something I enjoy listening to. While not bad I just like other artists in the genre better, perhaps because they learned from this band when they got started.

This kind of sucks? I listened to the UK version, so I missed paint it black, which I like, and instead got a bunch of organ tooting and baroque rock and dumbass lyrics? I keep being unimpressed by the stones average output while still quite liking the big hits, and this one has the hit missing! I thought I liked Under My Thumb thanks to a social distortion cover I discovered on Kazaa years ago, but there's still a bunch of tooting and shit on it? Seems like a lot of people hate Going Home but it might be the best thing on this album, feels less fake blues than their other stuff. I gotta say, this album was kind of a slog. No wonder the velvet underground made waves.

Stones from long ago. They still sound the same, yeah? Listened before? N Saved tracks? N Favorite tracks? Paint It, Black, It's Not Easy ⭐⭐ didn't hate it

Paint it black, alright good start...........then came the rest of the album. Felt like I was in a smokey bar that just needed background music that no is really listening to.

001 review Originally I was shocked at how little Rolling Stones I have in my record collection. Then these songs reminded me of the grand Stones VS Beatles debate and my house has always a Beatles house and remains so. Starting with Paint It, Black makes me understand why people in this era were on a crazy amount of drugs falling into a hole with this as a soundtrack. Complete side note: I was trippin on the punctuation and tried to figure out what was being implied by the comma before black - apparently it was just a typo on original records they removed later. Second side note: I guess that’s just the American version! Then I immediately get ripped out of it with Stupid Girl. Apparently Keith Richards stated this song was written about the girls they met on tour and how shallow and vain they seemed. He’s seems fully unaware of his place in this dynamic. Then the vibes shift again with the super melodic Lady Jane. Just don’t listen to the lyrics because again they seem fully unaware they are any piece of the problematic puzzle. Or maybe they think Going Home balances it? Though that is all about her making him feel good so the scales are still tipped for sure. What To Do is a song 100% written by drugs. The instrumental parts of this album vary greatly and are generally fun. I get some of why the Beatles and Stones are compared so much. You get soft and melodic, wild and dancy, and more rock and rolly. I enjoyed that part. You guys are all musical and can dissect that part way better than I can so I’ll leave that to you. This entire album is just oozing good ol’ gross misogyny. It’s a common theme in many of these songs we’ve heard in this project. This record made me want to go on a feminist rampage. Then to add fuel to the fire I was informed I listened to the American version and I had to go back and listen to the UK version and it’s not an album I’ll return to. This just is not my jam.

Might be a controversial opinion but I think 95% of stones songs are filler at best. This album is a great example of that. Going Home is possibly the worst 10+ minute song I’ve ever heard.

Didn't like

So much misogyny! And this album pretty much cements my opinion that Hot Rocks is the most effective and complete greatest hits album in rock history, since it actually makes the Rolling Stones an interesting and enjoyable band...which is the opposite of what this album does.

2/5 - I didn’t need to hear this, because the album tracks were fairly repetitive and the misogyny was gross. There’s better Stones albums than this.

Some see the Rolling Stones as the greatest rock band of all time. Anybody not in that bucket can't help but feel like they're the most overrated rock band of all time. I can't help but find myself in the latter group.

In which the Stones continue to chase the coat-tails of the Fab Four, conspicuously failing to escape their shadow. Stealing their clothes does not turn you into Lennon/McCartney. Two stars: unconvincing, and mostly just boring.

Paint It Black and a bunch of generic rock songs

++: Stupid Girl, Under My Thumb, Goin' Home, Flight 505, High and Dry, It's Not Easy, What to Do +: Doncha Bother Me, Think +-: Mother's Little Helper, I Am Waiting, Take It or Leave It -: Lady Jane, Out of Time 5,4/10

some of these songs suck ass lol

This starts off well with "Mother's Little Helper," one of the best songs from their early period. It's perfectly dark despite sounding cheery. And then it goes straight into a goofy pop song that almost sounds like a joke and a sappy ballad. At least after that one "Under My Thumb" has the catchiest melody on the album (if you can ignore the lyrics). From there there's very little that's worthwhile. The main problem is that it's too long, both because of the interminable, unchanging "Goin' Home" and because there are too many songs on the second side that don't add anything new in terms of songwriting. If this was trimmed down it might be pretty good, because the additions of new instruments and inclusion of some psychedelic elements make even the least interesting songs listenable.

paint it black is ok, the rest of it is doo doo lame ass boring blues rock

There was definitely a theme with the first few songs. “Going Home” probably one of the worst songs I’ve ever listened to in full.

Paint it black is so good. The rest of this is pretty boring and bad.

This is my first time listening to a Stones album that wasn't their greatest hits and it'd fine? I know they have some classics under their belt but I don't think this should be one of them. Paint it Black slaps though

It's OK, some good stuff on here but also just kind of washed over me.

Camarero!

Really only liked a couple songs here (Out of Time was the highlight). Decent guitar riffs but Jagger’s vocals really irritate me, especially in the first half.

Paint It Black followed by blues-y 60’s rock garbage, accompanied by Mick Jagger’s drunkest performance yet. Under My Thumb will give you momentary reprieve, offering style and creativity, before you’re thrown back to the wolves with Doncha Bother Me. That is assuming of course that you’re willing to ignore all the lyrics.

Paint it, Black is good, but the rest are kinda meh. Under my thumb has...questionable lyrics.

Glad to get more Rolling Stones. First impressions, pretty boring, and surprisingly so. Lyrics also pretty shitty. Surprisingly unimpressed by this. ‘Under my Thumb’ hitting the home run on the shittiness. Skipped ‘Going Home’ 11 mins 😬😬😬 Hard to separate from my view of Rolling Stones but if this was a new band, I’d say they haven’t got a future 😬

Starting off with Paint it Black... Awesome Following it up with Stupid Girl and Lady Jane....WTF?! Also why and I getting beach boys vibes from this? Who was copying who at this point?

listened to it twice, hadn't realised I'd left it on loop, totally passed me by without anything of note on both runs

Stupid girl is so so bad, it’s kinda embarrassing Rating this 2 stars solely because of Paint It, Black

So they really have just one single banger huh

Why am I having to listen to this instead of Sticky Fingers or Exile on Main Street? This seems to follow the pattern of most of their albums. One or two decent songs surrounded by glaring mediocrity. When they're hot they're hot but here they are not.

Popular but not for me

Annoying album

Just a typical Rolling Stones album. "Aftermath" was released before they became great. The songs sound nice for a 60s record. "Going Home", despite being lengthy, is the best track on "Aftermath". A slightly disappointing end to the week. 2 stars for "Aftermath".

On the Beatles Stones debate I‘m definitely team Beatles. Stones are just rebellion without innovative songwriting and only life recordings with bad equipment. So far my prejudices regarding stones. Let’s see. 1966. That’s the same year as Rubber Soul Track by track (uk version) Mothers helper: sitar stolen from Beatles Stupid girl: that’s early Beatles just with anti romance lyrics Lady Jane: ok this is original, great instrumentation. and sung with emotions. Only the chorus is a bit dull. Under my thumb: oh it gets more and more original. The stones sound seems to emerge somehow. Marimba is a nice addition. And Jaggers ahs add a lot of texture. Duncher Bother Me: great blues song. Bet this works great live! Even though the genre is totally different from previous songs it somehow fits the album. Going Home: more blues! The home bome bome thing gets on my nerves. Should have been 2m but it’s, 10 minutes!!? Ah it’s a giant jam session. Not many good ideas in there though. Could have been a lot shorter. Flight505: Boogie woogie standard scheme High and Dry. Gospel standard scheme It’s not easy. Rock n roll standard I am waiting. Oh some original songwriting again with great instrumentation. Even some non common time parts. Nice Take it or leave it. Lovely. But not special. Sounds like Phil Spector wall of sound. Think. Again some good songwriting and great instrumentation. But a bit sketchy still. I see how they grew their songwriting skills with this album What to do. Sounds like a Beach Boys ripoff. But not bad. Overall it sounds they trained their songwriting skills with this album. The middle part (Going home-High and dry) they should have left out. Then it would have been a decent album.

Nope, still don't like The Rolling Stones

Second RS album. I still don't care about them.

Like, whatever Mick. Some of these songs really fantastic. Paint it Black (US version) is such a standard bearer for excellence. Songs like Stupid Girl really seem to erase any good will The Stones built up with me for Paint It Black. Cool bluesy stuff, but the stones just feel kinda gross in this album. I feel a bit gross for listening.

I do not think, the Stones and I will come together any time… Fav: Paint it black

Heard the US version of the album before and the UK version's main problem is that Paint It Black (my favourite Rolling Stones song) isn't on it. The album is a mixed bag really, some nice tunes and others I completely don't care for or straight up dislike 2/5

Tregt, uinteressant

Under My Thumb og Paint it Black er nydelige.

Urgh. Trodde Out of Time var en godlåt, men den slutter jo aldri.

Not a huge stones fan. But I listened.

I'm a Rolling Stones fan, and I was excited to listen to listen to this as it is not an album I'm familiar with. "Paint it Black" sets a lovely tone, but then....eh. It's not bad, it's just ...eh. I listened a second time as a satirical drama/concept album and it was better but it shouldn't be that much work. If you want to get a Rolling Stones album there is better out there. "Let it Bleed" was my gateway and I would recommend it to anyone.

The US version begins with paint it black which I believe everyone has heard at least a hundred times. Might be I never heard with any sound quality because it felt new and better than I remembered. But then you go and spoil it all by singing something stupid like the rest of this misogynic trash record. Stupig girl was an awful song, Lady Jane was boring, Under my thumb is of course alright musically but deeply problematic lyrically. The rest must have been pretty forgettable until the last song where Mick does his thing and just freestyles ang grunts for several excruciating minutes.

Not a fan really. Paint it black banger tho

Helper, Thumb and Going Home were really good, but the rest was one big slug.

Before they really got good.

eh not my type

Despite being a monolith in the rock world, I’ve never been a fan of The Rolling Stones. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is that irks me about them; whether it’s Mick Jagger’s raw voice (when compared to someone like McCartney), or Keith Richard’s guitar playing (which ive never particularly liked). While I can’t deny that there’s interesting instrumentation on this record, for the most part it doesn’t hit me like listening to Revolver or Pet Sounds did the first time. There are certainly tracks I vibe to: Mother’s Little Helper and Doncha Bother Me both made it onto my playlist after this, but everything just falls into the realm of mediocrity that most of the 60s does for me. Ultimately, I just found it boring. Most of the tracks being under 3 minutes made it more tolerable, but why in the everloving fuck is Going Home 11 minutes long? It just drags and drags and made me wanna turn off the record halfway through. If you’ve never heard 60’s rock and roll then maybe it’d be better, but it just ends up sounding bland to me

The Rolling Stones are boring. Maybe 3 songs in their whole catalogue I’ve ever liked. This is a 1 and 1/2 star really, but I’m feeling generous so I’ll round it up to 2.

The rating is due to Under My Thumb's terrible lyrics. While this record holds some great songs (Under My Thumb is musically great), it still bears that filler quality of all Stones records. Some killers, too many fillers.

Not my favorite Stones effort. This isn't the confident, bluesy swagger of the Rollers. It's almost like they're seeking something pop rock that their contemporaries had found. "Mother's Little Helper" and "Under My Thumb" appear here.

Mediocre. Many of the tracks sound the same and the lyrics are poor.

Paint It Black is the best song the Stones ever wrote and they've written a lot of good ones. Mother's Little Helper is great too off the UK version. After that Lady Jane is interesting and Under My Thumb would be good if it didn't feel so gross. The rest is typical sloppy blues. The atrocity that is Going Home really destroys this one. Closing out side one of the UK version and the album on the US version, it's an okay instrumental vamp with Jagger moaning for 11 minutes. I wish I was being hyperbolic, but it's literal moaning for so much of the song. I'd love to scrub my ears out after that one. I have a strong bias against the Stones in that I don't really respect anything they do. It's commercialized rock and roll garbage that waters down the actual gritty music of American blues to be palatable for those middle class white families who will spend the money. I've been generally giving every album a begrudging 3 due to the sheer brilliance of Moon and Jagger's songwriting. When those boys hit, they sure do hit. Luckily, on this album, I just get to be a curmudgeon and give it a two.

Legends, but nothing except 'Paint it Black' for me.

While it has my second all-time favorite Stones song, the rest of the album is really forgettable.

Some interesting ideas, but so far from a coherent, complete album. The country tunes in partictlar were ill advised.

They have numerous better albums. Not worth the time.

When it comes to The Rolling Stones, I'm usually very particular about what I like, and so far I've not found an album of theirs that really draws me in in its entirety. Same goes for this album. I found certain songs enjoyable, but overall, I was just bored. I'm giving this a fairly low score because I know there are better albums by them out there, and I know that ultimately, this isn't going to be one I remember when looking back.

boring. lowkey one of their worst i don't get it

These Rolling Stones albums just get worse and worse.

So diverse in musical styles - while not the best example of each style, certainly credible and enjoyable. However, the misogyny is hard to take. I wish I hadn’t read the lyrics. Without reading them it’s 4 stars. After reading them 1.

May be one of the most overrated bands of all time idk I just wasn’t rocking with it

Good songs, but wouldn't feel the need to own this one.

Had its good moments here and there but through most of it I felt like the sound and lyrics are too outdated to enjoy. A lot of albums age well but for me this wasn't one of them.

A couple of bangers and a lot of filler. Going Home is eleven minutes I'm not getting back.

I feel like The Rolling Stones just never hit for me on the level I want. They’re not the Beatles 4/10

You aren't always good on your first try. Or second or third or fourth. But they got there eventually. Just not on this album. I couldn't finish it.

The first four songs would make a notable EP but the rest mostly filler. My guess its popularity is due to this being the first album the Stones showed song writing potential. I am a bit confused on why this is a 1001 album when I can name seven Stone's albums that are superior.

I thought I would like this more than I did. 1 good song out of 11 does not equal a good album imo.

Ich hatte nicht das Gefühl, dass das Album rund ist es wirkte eher als hätte man einfach 12 random Songs genommen für ein neues Album. Außerdem finde ich Mick Jaggers Stimme auf Dauer etwas anstrengend. Beste Songs: Paint It Black, Going Home

espero que nao seja o melhor que os rolling stones tenham para oferecer

Couldn’t even finish. If someone introduced me to the Stones with this album I’d never think of listening to them again.

I didn't find this album to be anything special. I know the Stones are very critically acclaimed, often in the same sentence as the Beatles. My favorite track was "Paint It, Black", but even that was an independent single that they threw onto the US release of the album to sell more copies.

I found the lyrics uninteresting and the music wasn't engaging me.

Really just not that great. This was clearly before most rock songwriters actually got good at rock songwriting. The 11-minute track is the only thing dragging this above a 4/10 for me.

Against all odds, the Stones have rolled in for a third time this week, and I am once again underwhelmed. 3 tracks out of the first 4 were pretty decent, but everything that followed was ehhhh. Special mention to the bad trip that is Gone Home: the 11 minute experience of Mick Jagger grunting. Even if I were to rate this by the US version, which has Paint It Black (🔥) and an all-around tighter tracklist, this is once again a miss from the Rolling Stones.

OK so I had to look this up. Apparently Aftermath was the first RS album to be mostly original compositions and where they kind of really came into their sound. So, it makes more sense in context why this would be on here (like Pink Floyd's Pipers) but the album as it stands is super boring and I KNOW the Stones have better releases later on - I can understand now why Beatles fans had kind of a superiority complex over the Stones fans around the mid 60s. Plus, US release eliminated and reordered a few tracks and replaced the opener with Paint It Black, which remained a non-album single in the UK. PIB's inclusion I think would've really done a lot to establish this album's sound, but getting rid of Mother's Little Helper for the US release was a mistake, as it's one of the better tracks. I think mucking around with it a little more (having both PIB and MLH on there for a start) would create a slightly better album, but even then most of the thing would be 40+ minutes of the same tempo in 4/4 with Jagger talk-singing over it with little variation.

I just have a hard time liking TRS

The arc of this album seems completely off? Opens very strong, then dips into a silly ditty, then into a fairly horrific simp. Not too impressed. The singles are okay I guess, but nothing here will remain lodged in my mind. Going Home is the most useless waste of record space I've encountered in ages.

overrated misogyny fest

Not enthused by this. This felt … forced. I can’t really explain where this notion comes from but that’s the impression I got. Going Home did not come off as genuine impro. This album was repetitive in the sense of the songs sounding very similar to one another and I did not like how often the lyrics kept repeating in every song. The song It‘s Not Easy was annoying …. „Not easy…. haaaAAArd“. The best song is obviously Paint It Black.

Oh dear, not for me! Didn’t like one song I’m afraid. Lyrics very dodgy at times and very repetitive. Boring stuff

Dusty mon. Paint it Black is a banger though.

I grew up with a dad who's part of the Silent Generation era. This album really shows up the kind of music he used to listen to and the musical references that many artists from his time evoked through it. However, I got really bored through it and yet I can say The Rolling Stones have a je ne sais quois that makes their music so unique.

One great first tune for me then the rest isn’t memorable (but still easy to listen to)

Unremarkable. Uninteresting lyrics. Annoying vocalist for most songs. Stand out - under my thumb

It was all right. Nothing exciting or terrible. Easy to listen to. Under my Thumb is very unsettling. No thank you.

Early rs. Never been too into them for a whole album

I went for the US version as it was shorter and had "Paint it Black" on it, which was the only song title I recognised. I've never liked The Rolling Stones, and I still don't after listening to this album. They seem like relics from a bygone era, too hard to relate to. PIB is a tune though, and I realised I also knew "I Am Waiting" from the film Rushmore, which is also a nice tune. More of the rest just sounds like fairly ordinary rhythm and blues to me though.

I mean it’s The Rolling Stones so of course they’re influential but this is not their best work (the best is yet to come). The songs were just incredibly repetitive. I don't understand the Beatles rivalry...it isn't close imo. This isn't bad. The vocal style is fun at times and the instrumentals are cool. Sometimes Mick Jagger's voice gets on my nerves tho. The instrumental in "Mother's Little Helper" is really cool. Liked Songs: "Mother's Little Helper" , "Under My Thumb" , "Flight 505" , "It's Not Easy" , "Think" , "What To Do"

The music itself is alright I suppose, but the terrible misogynistic lyrics really bring this one down. I hated "Stupid Girl" and "Under my Thumb" the most. The only reason I give this one a 2 instead of a 1 is because I liked "Paint it Black".

франкоязычная версия Paint It, Black от Мари Лафорет в разы лучше)

Too mannered. To think this was the same year that revolver was released. This album sounds like trying to catch up with rubber soul, but the Beatles had already moved on. Two good tracked under my thumb and out of time which sound almost interchangeable. The stones got better than this but mostly at playing rock n roll.

The US version has Paint it Black, which would have bumped this up slightly. But I listened to the UK version, which was longer and had far more clunkers than stand out songs. I liked Lady Jane and a few of the hits, but the rest dragged this down to a 2. For an album that came out in the mid-60s to be judged as a little bit nasty about women by contemporary media is quite an achievement. Indeed, some of these songs have not aged well at all.

to start an album with "Paint It Black" is absolutely incredible. I can't imagine what it must have felt like on a vinyl record at the time, as a first listen. the rest of it .... really not my thing.

Paint it Black was the highlight. Musically, I can totally see why people got into the Stones. Until Jagger sings - very easy to listen to. Musically very talented.

Paint It Black is an incredible song. But, this album has confirmed for me that I really only like a handful of Stones songs.

Never a fan, and creepy attitude to women 👎

Why is the UK version excruciatingly longer and doesn't even have Paint It Black and why does this site link you to the UK version which is excruciatingly longer and doesn't even have Paint It Black?

Paint It, Black - 5/5 Stupid Girl - 1/5 Lady Jane - 3/5 Under My Thumb - 2/5 Doncha Bother Me - 1/5 Think - 2/5 Flight 505 - 2/5 High And Dry - 3/5 It's Not Easy - 1/5 I am Waiting - 3/5 Going Home - 1/5 (too fucking long and bad) Average score: 2.18/5 author of this list must've only listened to Paint It, Black cuz that's one of the ONLY good songs on this album. after that song, it's pretty much all downhill from there their influence in music is not lost on me and i've liked some of their other albums, but man this wasn't good. Jagger's vocals were... Jagger's vocals, many of the songs sounded like they were dicking around with *concepts* of a blues song (wtf was that 11-minute track?) and the misogynistic tones of Stupid Girl and Under My Thumb? ew. i'm cool off hearing the majority of this album ever again

I like quite a lot of the Rolling Stones' work. But not this. Maybe the most sexist opening few tracks to a record imaginable, and I was in no mood for that bullshit today. Yes, they're trying to do some interesting-for-the-time stuff with instrumentation and so on but I don't think it compensates for the fundamentally rotten core of this album. Add to that, the bluesy jam stuff like 'Going Home' drags on horrendously and you have a recipe for a pretty crappy record. It's a wonder their career not only survived this but went supersonic.

There are so many familiar songs on this album, that I feel like I've already heard it. While I've never been much of an Stones fan, I can appreciate their music. To me they always felt a little safe, while their public image was not (not sure if that was conservative press doing that or what). I can hear the familiar Stones sound on this record, already second song "Stupid Girl" has all the elements I've heard in their songs all the wasy to 80's and 90's, wasn't expecting to hear them on a recording from 1966.

It's not a great Rolling Stones album. Not sure why is this on the list

I have always felt The Rolling Stones go from rock gods to corny in the blink of an eye. The first two songs here are such a strong example of that. Mick Jagger should not be allowed to write songs while horny. It’s just whack ass lyrics and misogyny. He also probably shouldn’t be allowed to be horny in general because he’s got a litany of accusations against him. I remember clocking “Under my Thumb” as weirdly abusive in high-school and I stand by that. “Stupid Girl” is an insane track to write as well. As a lyricist Jagger seems to rely on repetition a lot, and if Keith Richards isn’t going off then a lot of their music is just meh. Greatest hits band. I’d take a Beatles album any day.

Ya know i just have never been that into the stones 🤷‍♂️

I see from its extensive Wikipedia entry that a variety of unusual instruments were used while recording this album, but if you had told me that the sounds were achieved on guitars with some minor adaptations and effects, I would have believed that. Otherwise another forgettable and boring album which sounds dated to me and just makes me appreciate the Beatles more.

Really did not enjoy this at all. The quality of the recording was very poor, and I just don't like Mick's vocals on any of this. Don't think I'll come back to this.

This was way worse than I hoped it would be. I liked the blues-y "Doncha Bother Me" but overall did not enjoy this record. Maybe it's in part because I am sick today, but not a fan. "Stupid Girl" and "Under My Thumb" get particularly low marks.

Plus for Paint it Black and the fact that this is all originals rather than the pedestrian blues covers from earlier work. Mostly bad and lyrically horrid. Stones are overplayed.

Meh Rating: 2.3

Wow at the misogyny.

Great background music, and Paint It Black bangs.

One well known song. Others are unfamiliar to me.

Paint It Black is probably my favorite song by the Rolling Stones but this album was a 2 overall.

"what a drag it is getting old," sings the man who won't die over one of the most annoying guitar lines of the 60's played by a man who won't die even harder. Most of this is extremely boring but you can at least see how it's the bones for rock and roll to get good some day.

I’ve always felt that the Stones are best represented by a greatest hits collection, and this album does nothing to change my mind. A really rather dull collection of tracks (I listened to the UK release so I didn’t even get the joy of Paint It Black). Under My Thumb is a great track as always, but I found everything else on this record very generic; the fact that The Beatles released Revolver around the same time and somehow people compare the two is baffling to me. I’m docking a star purely for the self-indulgent wankery that is Going Home. 11 minutes of a basic sketch of a generic blues riff, just awful.

If anyone says this is one of their favourite albums check on the women in their life. A distractions off, lyrics on album. A story of a man trying to get a woman and then treating her awfully. I think he gets what he deserves in the end.

Some incredibly repetitive and not particulary interesting blues. (UK version.)

Not to be the too woke friend but I think misogyny is bad and I don’t care for 50 minutes of it. Okay - maybe calling it “50 minutes of misogyny” is a gross oversimplification; however, the lyrics on so much of the album bring it down from “yeah, it’s fine” to outright unenjoyable for me. Favorite: Goin’ home

Sheesh, this is rough lyrically. A lot of interesting things musically. I just can’t see myself ever really sitting down and listening to this all the way through again.

Not the best Rolling Stones album. I liked around 3 songs.

My comments didn’t save but I didn’t love this. Back from a work conference so missed last week.

Two Stones albums in a week really put a damper on my perspective here. Maybe I’m bored of them or maybe I just liked last week’s album more.

It's only rock n roll

I understand that the Rolling Stones, and this album in particular are considered to be wildly influential and important to a lot of music that can afterward. I also understand that I just don’t care for it at all. “Under My Thumb” is the only redeeming part of this record, and that’s mostly because of Streetheart’s unreal cover of it. Maybe there’s some Canadian bias in my preference of the cover, but that’s the way she goes. 2*

On the plus side, this album is musically more interesting than 'Let It Bleed', though there's still a bit of a hokey blues cosplaying here. I do like "Paint It Black" as far as Stones songs go. The use of a wider range of instruments than guitar, bass, drums is appreciated. Generally, I am not a believer in holding people to modern standards when evaluating their beliefs from another time societally, but the misogyny on this album goes well beyond the casual sexism du jour. To sandwich a love ballad ("Lady Jane") in between songs about hating ("Stupid Girl") and controlling ("Under My Thumb") women is... rich, to be charitable. These songs are only the most egregious examples of a general contempt for women that seems to run through the whole album. I just really hate Mick Jagger, his dumb voice, and the very dumb words that come from his dumb face. 4/10 for being a better and more interesting album, musically, than 'Let It Bleed'.

It was OK, but a bit boring except for the first track.

One of the many mysteries of Martin Scorsese is his ability to make these guys sound cool as hell.

There are a couple really great songs on here, a few truly bad ones, and some very forgettable filler. It is funny going back to see how unremarkable the stones really are.

Et par bangers, paint it black og under my thumb, men mye ræl i så jævlig stereo ass. Trodde Philip overdrev, men nei, stereo må ha blitt funnet opp uken før. Typ det årets ChatGPT

Disappointing!!

It's okay. I love "Paint It Black," the first track on the album. The rest of the album falls flat for me. I'm sure for my dad, who grew up in this generation, the album was significant. Just not for me. 2/5.

credit to the Stones, if i built my career around playing these songs over and over again for 60 years i would fucking kill myself

listened to the US version instead of the UK version, and I think that was the right decision. leading off with Paint it Black set a great tone that was absolutely not matched by the rest of the album. did you know these guys LOVE to fuck and disrespect women? it's most of the album, which gets old pretty quick. Flight 505 slipped in between the misogyny sandwich made me laugh though, "I got bored of my life and went to escape and the plane crashed and I DIED. anyways, this girl I know SUCKS." if they had to keep Going Home, I'm glad they ended the album with it, because GOD does that song go on and on and on and on... listening to the UK exclusives, Mother's Little Helper and Out of Time are pretty enjoyable, even if Out of Time gets a little repetitive and runs ~2 min too long. Take It or Leave It? sure, I'll leave it, thanks standout songs: Paint it Black, Mother's Little Helper, Out of Time 2.5 rounded down

Okay, so both the US and UK versions have all time great opening tracks. Paint it Black is a classic and Mothers Little Helper is one of my personal favorite Stones songs, but most of the fun kind of ends there for me. Both versions just lack the fun, rock & roll element of a Stones record. Based on timing of the release, it sort of makes sense that it was still very early on and they were in the midst of finding their sound, but this feels like they were stuck in 60s psychedelia. Under My Thumb is a track that stands out musically. It’s one that I assume most have heard at some point, but boy those lyrics don’t really hold up, huh? Even if it’s sort of a tongue-in-cheek jokey presentation, the song itself feels gross. I’d never paid too much attention to the lyrics because my mind was always drawn to the marimba and the unique sound that Brian Jones was adding. His playing throughout the album stands out. My personal favorite track is High And Dry. It’s honkin and tonkin and feels like it could have charted on the Billboard Country charts in any era, but again they played around with their sound so much on the record as a whole that there was nothing else that even sounded similar. Overall, not a great album front to back because of the lack of consistent sound. I’d much rather listen to one of the classic Stones records where as the few highlights from this album and era are best thrown into their 64-71 comp. I’d give 2.5 stars if I could but we’re going to round down today.

the first of the "formative" Stones albums i've gotten around to (anything before Beggars Banquet)! being someone who's only checked them out via similar album challenges, it's hard to stop myself from looking at their music in the context of their contemporaries. especially with this album drawing comparisons to Rubber Soul, i struggle to find many thematical or musical similarities other than both of them being released in the same six-month window. the few uncommon instrumental choices, while interesting, don't do a whole lot to reshape the Stones' identity as a blues rock band, though it is a style that fits their skillset. Jagger's vocals & the rhythm section at large (the organ parts are cool!) do a lot to individualize the group's sound, i've just never understood the perception of them as pioneering anything that wasn't already being done by the Bob/Beach/Beatle/Kink sector of mid-60's rock innovation. the acoustic moments interspersed throughout are a nice change of pace & generally my favorite songs of theirs; Brian Jones is just as vital an ingredient to their sound as Jagger/Richards imo. the runtime is a liiiiittle much for the lack of variety (Going Home does not help) but i can appreciate that as some element of statement-making! if we could award half-star ratings this would be a perfect candidate for 2.5, i don't actively dislike anything besides the misogyny but i doubt i'd find myself repeating any of these tracks except Paint It Black (which isn't even on the version of this i listened to) invasion by association

US release had Paint it black, huge miss not having this on UK version (a point deduction on its own). Out of time was good. Otherwise pretty repetitive

I was going to rate this a 1 but it has Paint it Black on it so.. it's a 2. I still don't understand their popularity.

I've heard 2 or 3 Stones albums before this list and I've mostly liked what I've heard, but I've never heard this one. This seems to be where they really found their footing and established themselves, but I was disappointed by it. I'm sure it was pretty notable when it released, but most of the album felt like second rate Rolling Stones, the sort of thing they would do later and do better. I always liked when the Stones do the country/southern rock sort of thing elsewhere so Doncha Bother Me is pretty decent. Paint It Black is a classic but I'm a bit tired of hearing it now. The lyrics on Stupid Girl are fucking shite. Gone Home was good for the first 5 or so minutes but it just kept going and felt like rambling nonsense at a point Overall a letdown. I have higher hopes for the others on the list. 2.5 (I listened to the US version) Highlights: Doncha Bother Me, Paint It Black

not my fav rolling stones I had so far. a bit boring

I listened partway through the UK version before I realized that I could be working through an album that was 10 minutes shorter and had a track that was better than anything else on the album. I guess the Rolling Stones just aren't for me.

It starts with the banger 5/5 Paint it Black. But there are a few skippable tracks for me—Lady Jane for sure—and the last track, Going Home, was painful, so overall, it can only be a 3 at most. UPDATE - I realise now that I listened to the US version. The UK version does not have Paint it Black. I listened to the additional 4 songs. Out of Time was good. But the album drops to 2 stars without Paint it Black.

Odd album because it had some of the best stones songs but also really a lot of songs I would skip.

Grandpa music ;(

Lemme guess, this is one of MANY Stones albums on this list, because we need to cHarT tHEiR pRogGrEsS or sEe wHeRE tHey CaMe fRoM. Can't we just have the good albums??

eu não aguentoOoOo mais rolling stones

Highlights: Paint It Black, Flight 505 I don't think this album is for me

Hum drum and laaaaaaaame

I just can’t get into The Stones. I’ve tried and it’s all just very forgettable

2 booms BOOM 💪 BOOM 💪

Too bad their lyrics suck this much. Musically, it starts with a strong hit, Paint It Black is still one of their best song. It continues with interesting instrumentals, experimentations, interesting sounds from a wide range of instruments. When I think of experimentation from this era, their rival comes directly in my mind but I don't think of the Stones, and that was my mistake. But everything is tainted by their awful, offending lyrics. Might have been 4 of 5 stars.

Okey, not my cup of tea.

Listened to UK version.

I like The Stones but with such a huge catalogue I think their best albums are greatest hits. This one is a bit early for me.

I just sure do dislike the sound of Mick Jagger’s voice. Have I said that before?

Has some good songs, but I’ve never been impressed by the Stones

If a man says this is his favorite album I'd suggest his date start stuffing breadsticks.

Just a bit bored by it. They seemed to be exploring loads of different music but it was all so surface level to me that it never did anything interesting

eh, okay

The link here took me to the UK version of the album, which has Mother's Little Helper in place of Paint It Black 😒 Best: Under My Thumb (!) Worst: Going Home

I love the stones but the 60s production curse strikes again.

This album represents The Rolling Stones before they were The Rolling Stones. A lot of the elements of their signature groove are there, as shown in the long outro, but it’s missing something. Painted Black was cool, but doesn’t shine particularly bright against its peers of that time period. Ultimately, I left this a little uninspired.

A few good ones but it’s okay. Love the 60’s sound but would’ve liked a-bit more psychedelia

I thought the Rolling Stones were meant to be good 😭

Letteralmente terribile. Noioso fino allo sfinimento e quando non è ripetitivo è raccapricciante. Stones, so che potete fare di meglio

Paint it Black is such a good song but it all goes downhill from there

I'm hoping some rock and roll will allow me to finally rate something above a 2 Paint It Black - This has never been my favorite song, but it's not bad. I just hate the whole "blah blah blah paint it blaaackkk" part. Stupid Girl - Can't say I'm gonna love this one from the first minute. This sounds like a child wrote it. Like it just sounds basic and boring. (going back to this, for 1966, this was probably pretty wild. So I give it a pass) Lady Jane - So far we're off to a poor start. Not gonna like this song I just know it. I was right Under My Thumb - ok a little funky start, I dig it. I think in the context of 1966, this music was probably super sick. And for that, I can respect it. But I don't really love listening to it in 2025. The bassline is really cool on this, love the way it sounds. These sounds are just pretty repetitive so far. Doncha Bother Me - I'm gonna be disappointed in this album too...sigh...it's just not that interesting to me Think - Oh wow, another song I don't really care for. Flight 505 - Back half of the album, can it redeem itself? Probably not. I also should mention that I'm not a big fan of Mick's vocals. High And Dry - I just know I won't like this song. Fuck me. This song stinks. The drum pattern is so fucking annoying. Sorry, I'm still salty that 1001 Albums Generator has given me shit i dont likeeeee ugh im trying!!!!!!!!!!! It's Not Easy - I do regret giving a bunch of albums 2/5 though. Because I do think I like this album marginally better than the rest of the 2/5 I gave. But there's no way I'm giving this a 3/5. This song is alright, I would never choose to listen to it again though. I Am Waiting - I'm waiting for a good fucking song. Little did I know that Paint It Black would probably be my favorite song off this thing. Do not like this one. Going Home - Cmon, end it strong. (they won't). As i suspected. Another song I don't like. Overall - Super disappointing.

4/10 - The Rolling Stones are boring.

Think Not really for me

Really didn't like a few songs (eg: Lady Jane), the rest were okay.

Outside of Paint It, Black and Under My Thumb this was just sort of sleepy and uninteresting to me. I was very excited to listen and discover a new deep cut or two, but it just didn't happen for me.

Listened to the US version solely because of "Paint It Black", which is utterly brilliant. Unfortunately it was immediately followed by "Stupid Girl", which I just hated so much because of its misogynistic lyrics. "Under My Thumb" wasn't much better, and the rest of the album kinda blended together.

Never been a Stones fan. Most of their songs are mediocre at best. This album is not the exception to the rule. That would normally mean 3 stars but unfortunately Going Home is so irritating that it loses 1 star just for that track.

By that time, The Beatles had already released Rubber Soul and Revolver was on the way. Meanwhile the Stones were writing songs like Doncha Bother Me and High and Dry.

Blues rock... Yanowatimean

By chances they have 2 or 3 huge hits on this one, because after that, we're falling into the great land of the generic blues rock fillers. Man, this band is overrated to a point that is almost unbelievable.

I consider myself a fan of the Rolling Stones. However, the sheer douchebaggery of this album was a little hard to stomach.

Not my favorite Stones record. But interesting, nonetheless.

its classic stones its probably good

Paint it black and Under my thumb are good songs, but the rest of this album is quite dull.

Nogle af sangene her virker decideret amatør agtige. I Am Waiting og Take It Or Leave It ikke mindst.

a nostalgic throwback to the days when mick jagger wasnt the smarmiest sleaziest most self satisfied piece of shit frontman on the planet, and merely a guy with an extremely annoying voice and singing sensibilities. could do a lot worse for a rubber soul equivalent made by a band that sucks ass, id say im even into the A side here more then im not...its nothing if not a very distinct lineup of songs, strong central musical and lyrical ideas, and its fun to map the View Of Women thru each track which fluctates wildly from sympathetic (and horrifying) observations of married women addicted to happy pills to at least one straightforward love song to Stupid Girl and Under My Thumb which are hilarious (on purpose) misogyny classics. ofc the arrangement creativity keeps popping up even tho im less into the second half. cant stand this band but how can i hate an album with multiple marimba parts on it??? u cant go wrong with a marimba. also this is actually my first time listening to the UK tracklisting lmao, only heard the US version as a teen, had to hunt down the other songs on the Flowers compilation

welp, that sure was the soundtrack for my midday zone out... EXCEPT for whatever the hell was going on with that 11 minute song. stop it. get some help.

meh. another crappy album by an overrated band of misogynists. seriously, i think every track on here was about some perceived slight or personal failing by a woman. mick jagger even sang in one song that a woman was only in it for the money, but in another song later he/the narrator tried to do the exact same thing. unfortunately this album doesn't hit any of the standards for good music, despite all the standards being double. *airhorn noises* i can only assume the US version of this album would've been a better listen since it was mercifully shorter and replaced four filler tracks with the actually decent single paint it black. instead i had to listen to the stones' 11-minute take on an endless, nameless-style cacophony track. i about lost it around 9 1/2 minutes in when someone started clapping arhythmically. what the fuck guys. favorites: mother's little helper, under my thumb, and out of time were the least bad tracks. under my thumb is kind of a jam despite its intense misogyny... ugh

Meh, I'm more of a Beatles fan

For such a popular band, this was such an underwhelming album. Just more white bias on this list.

A couple of great songs, then seemingly like every other RS lp nothing but basic filler. The definition of a greatest hits band vs full discography. 2 songs added to 1001 Playlist Experience Playlist and the rest was fairly forgettable

Jagger heard "Run for Your Life" close Rubber Soul and was like I can be WAY more misogynistic than that! "Stupid Girl" is a stupid song. And there's plenty more. But also lots of vintage mid-60s Stones, as they were just finding out what that meant. Not just a white blues rock band, but that magic that would peak in the late-60s and early 70s with Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile, et al. If you dig what's good here, and loathe what isn't, some advice: the UK version has a couple more great tunes, including "Out of Time" and "Mother's Little Helper". Make a playlist of both the UK and USA versions, cut the shit (including the pointless "Going Home"), and you have a fine little album that's at least marginally less objectionable lyrically, and excellent otherwise. Track list: Paint it Black, Mother's Little Helper, Lady Jane, Under My Thumb (gross lyrics but it bangs), Doncha Bother Me, Flight 505, High and Dry, Out of Time, I am Waiting. Four stars for those, but just two for the original.

I don't care much for this 60s rock nonsense, but I can't deny the cultural impact the Stones have had. This is a great example of an album that I'm positive has resonated with millions of people worldwide that I just don't care for. Under My Thumb is my pick for high point of this album, and it's so early on.

Not a fan of pre mid 60s Stones . but still a few great tracks , just not enough for a whole album best track - under my thumb 2.5

I’m sure this is a classic album that i would get shit for but I don’t care much for it. The first song Paint it Black I knew. This song was featured in a Kevin Bacon movie Stir of Echos. The rest was whatever. I know little Rolling Stones album but the ones I do know I like. This one is a pass for me.

High-key mid.

Listened to the UK Version which is longer and doesn't have "Paint it Black" on it. I think overall it is a mediocre to boring album. This album is 52 minutes of similar sounding blues rock that one could expect of an early Stones record, which is surprising to me because this album is generally referred to as some of their first good output which confuses me a little. Other than the first side, which features a few good tracks, it really doesn't take long for it to start to drone on. By the end of it, I was quite done with Jagger's lethargic vocals after the amusement of the offbeat instrumentation wore off.

These lyrics are terrible. 2.4

Actually insane people like this band more than the beatles.

прямо скажем, не очень внимательно один раз прослушала, общее впечатление что какой длинный хонки-тонк…

Wankers

I was not impressed by this album. 2/5

lowkey making paint it black the first track is clickbait. everything about paint it black is otherworldly and ahead of its time and the rest of the album seems to get somewhat stuck in that same period. Still some interesting instrumentation but somewhat of a let down. 1.) paint it black 2.) under my thumb 3.) lady jane

Some great songs, but also a lot of boring repetitive ones

very meh

Nothing special to me.

Like many of the Stones albums, one good track. But it's a great one.

We’d call under my thumb coercive control these days and mother little helper would have had the social workers in. Still finding their feet.

Okay, but like, misogyny.

2.5☆/5 06.27.2024 How much male chauvinism can you fit in 52 minutes

Wanted to handwave this, Stones, I don't care, 3, next. But see? This, kids, is why we don't pay attention to lyrics! Jesus Christ. Bonus: there's also some truly shit music on here. 2 but only because of Paint It Black.

It’s been a minute since The Rolling Stones have shown up for me. And truthfully I haven’t been complaining about that. Funnily enough I started with the debut, and what a weak start it was. I’m aware of what this band would go on to do, but it seems like other people also agreed that their first record wasn’t all that interesting. I had hoped that maybe Aftermath, which from what I had seen, is supposed to be the first noteworthy record they released would be better. Hilariously, I found it to be even less interesting than their debut. I want to preface this by saying that none of their music has ever really stuck out to me, even before I heard entire albums. Paint It, Black is the only song I’ve ever found enjoyable. And although that song technically is on this, that’s only the US version. Based on the cover I was shown, I was supposed to listen to the UK version, which seems to be the original intended version. That’s unfortunate, because without that previously mentioned song, the only other good track here is Lady Jane. And that barely sits above average in terms of other blues rock music I’ve heard. There is just nothing on this album that sticks out to me as cool or engaging. What are they doing here that I couldn’t find two dozen other bands doing from the same time period? Plus I think hearing this is what really cemented my opinion on Mick Jagger. I kinda can’t stand the guy. He’s not even like an amazing singer. If we are talking big legendary bands of the 60s, he is no Jim Morrison or John Lennon. He’s not even comparable to someone like John Fogerty. Maybe this is a sign that the Stones are just not for me. But now that I can put the two lackluster ones behind me, it’s supposed to be only good albums from them from here on out. I hope I can be proven wrong, and my opinions can be changed. Rating: 3/10

I have yet to find an album by the stones where the deeper tracks are anything special. Love the tracks I was already familiar with from this album, but everything else is more or less boring. And that “Going Home” song… Who could possibly have the patience to make it to the end of that travesty?

Well…. If this doesn’t backup Bill Hicks’ theory that drugs do/did some good things for our culture than I don’t know what does. Listen to “Stupid Girl” and “Lady Jane” and you’ll experience the approximately longest 6 minutes of your entire life. Drivel horseshit. Derivative sexist crap. And then there’s Paintbut Black, Under my Thumb, Think and a few others. I’ll take the mind altered drug induced 70s Stones thanks.

3 was too high for this album. 2, and I was nice. Wannabe Beatles

Outside of Paint it Black this is pretty shit. The Stones have much better albums

bloated as helllll why is there an 11 minute long track in the middle of this 😭

I don’t find this remarkable.

A few good songs and then the rest is pretty boring. Live this band was amazing, but this album isn't.

Not for me

At their most musical when they’re at their most misogynistic, which is to say I’m not gonna be coming back to this one too often.

How to write an Aftermath song: - Jingle Jangle - Say something that won’t age well - Tambourine I feel like this is included because of the t-shirts.

Over rated. I remember why I don't like the Stones all that much. They always sounded a little out of tune and like they were phoning it in (except for Charlie Watts, of course). Weirdly ironic to criticize your middle class peers while engaging in the very behavior you're criticizing. Oh wait, I forgot, you're writing about "characters." Sorry. I KNOW I'm SUPPOSED to LOVE the Stones as anti-establishment heroes, but they were always pretty representative of the establishment in Rock, weren't they? Minus one star for Critical Acclaim®.

Not as good as Sticky Fingers, and that sort of ruined this album for me

paint it black may only be the only worthwhile song on this album unfortunately

All the songs sound the same Best Song: Mothers little helper Worst song: Stupid Girl

Other than Paint It Black this was painful. Every song sounded the same to me.

I do not like the rolling stones

I've never gotten into the Stones. There's a couple of hits that I like but they just feel overrated to me. This album didn't do much for me. Obviously the stand-out track is Paint it, black. The rest of it just didn't really stand out from an already crowded list of 60s rock (I'm starting to think it's the worst decade for music - personal opinion, don't hate). Also the last song just waffles on for wayyyy too long and the lyrics are cringe-city.

de jagger het halt schono e geili stimm wiso hend d 60er jahr so vill girl lieder, finds naja uhh de bass bi under my thumb isch crispyyyy doncha bother me het gad chli heavy stereosound going home hani zerst na cool gfunde aber nöd als 11 minute lied poah isch das en drag gsi, wer het entschide, das lied sött us 5 min bestah wo de jagger rifach chli öppis umerüeft WISO HET NUR D US VERSION PAINT IT BLACK DRUFF was isch die obnoxious offbeat hi-hat uf high and dry?? ich han würkli gad sehr müeh de refrain vo out of time erinneret mich iwie anes beatles lied aber chans iwie nöd fasse vlt a I wanna hold your hand? egaaaal isch uf jede fall es oke lied ja alles andere isch okay aber nöd meh? chan wenig degege sege aber au nur wenig defür

I listened to the UK version, which is longer and has Mothers Little Helper instead of Paint it Black. Both are great songs. The rest of the album though- ugh. Stupid Girl is atrocious. Under My Thumb has long been problematic. Going Home just keeps dragging on.

Nothing groundbreaking

Kind of repetitive

Paint It, Black is good, the rest is sonically tolerable, the lyrics suck. I won't waste my time listening to this every again

It’s… fine? Not the best work of the Stones and I really am not huge on them even at their best. This just feels like a watered down version of English rock. So many better bands… why did they get such praise? I will say that Jagger has a good voice and their rhythm section is pretty killer but I find Keith Richards to just be a tremendously dull guitarist

Un disco de los 60 más

not bad. more groovy background music for me

First song was great and downhill from there..

Before listening: Alrighty, this is my first Stones album on this list. So this was released in 1966, so after Sgt Peppers. I can only assume it's got a touch of psychedelic because the Stones seemed to be always one album behind the Beatles in style. I actually don't dislike the Stones, however, and I'm looking forward to this one. After listening: I was wrong. I've been wrong before and believe me I'll be wrong again. This album wasn't psychedelic at all. Other than the first song, it sounded to me like the rest of the album was more honky tonk than anything. This record was bland. Very, very bland. Barely any songs stood out and I'm not well versed enough in the Stones discography to understand what came before or after. This sounds to me like the end of their early 60s input and like they are ready to move on.

It wasn't bad but it also wasn't very interesting. Pretty bland, not much variation, track after track sounded the same.

Meh! 🫤

I never much liked the stones. I'm folk and country, not rock

I think the thing I like about British prog rock bands is that it's about as far away from the blues as you can get. They're wailing on their fifes and mandolins as if John Lee Hooker never picked up a guitar. It's a responsible position for British boys to take. I'm not saying I don't like the blues. There's just something increasingly awkward about white British boys, even someone as transgressive as Mick Jagger, taking on roots music directly. For the first thing, it's boring. It's kind of supposed to be because when you have the blues, your situation cannot and will not change. An American black blues artist in mid-20th century music can make that work. Mick Jagger in a live performance can probably make that work too. But listening to this now I just kept stifling a yawn. The second point I don't actually believe in, that white people shouldn't do black music or something like that. Here's a slightly more nuanced take. The blues was a foundational element of rock and roll. But roots blues music is a traditional sad music like the fado in Portugal. At this point, it is clearly from another time and rooted in place. Can anyone sing fado? Of course, it's their right. Would you ever take it as seriously if Taylor Swift did it? Rather than a not-famous, life-wrecked woman in Lisbon?

This album didn't particularly resonate with me, as it didn't align with my personal taste in music. While it did have a few catchy songs, the overall sound and style just didn't appeal to me. However, I remain open-minded and would be willing to explore their other albums in the future

MIIDDDD IT ALL SOUNDED THE SAAME the only good songs were out of time and mother's little helper. maybe if i wanted to be a cowboy i'd listen to this and pretend i'm in a saloon nursing a whiskey on the rocks butttttt rn no thanks #thebeatlesarebetter

When the Beatles are being kinda awful you don't think about it as much because the songs are good and there's some charm. I'm Looking Through You is very mean, and also very good. Take away the charm and song quality, triple down on misogyny, and you've got Aftermath by the Rolling Stones. Sure, lots of it has nice sounding 60s rock backing. Musically, Under My Thumb is better than I want to give it credit for. I have never liked Paint It Black, which isn't on the version of the album I just listened to anyway. I suppose this is an album to listen to in order to understand who the Rolling Stones were (real assholes), and how low the bar was set to call their stuff a masterpiece compared to more interesting contemporaries. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

I’m something of a Stones hater by default, but I’m always trying to be a blank slate when I listen to these records. I know there are Stones albums I will like quite a bit, but this isn’t one of them. I do like hearing Brian Jones. But overall there’s just a lot of much better electric blues music out there that doesn’t also require the listener to have to think a lot about Mick Jagger’s weird hang ups about women.

After listening to The Doors and jumping straight to the Rolling Stones I realised something: I don't really like Mick Jagger's voice. The start of Mother's Little Helper was so screechy and jagged and I thought "Oh no, I've got to get through a whole album of this? Lady Jane reminded me of the Spinal Tap song about Flower People. Under My Thumb is a hit! It has a very weird and troubling sentiment but a great tune! Going Home went on forever and felt a bit goofy. A lot of these songs of white bands in the 60s doing blues seem goofy now to me. Did a quick bit of Wikipedia reading to see why this album is important: "Aftermath is considered by music scholars to be an artistic breakthrough for the Rolling Stones. It is their first album to consist entirely of original compositions, all of which were credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. The band's original leader Brian Jones reemerged as a key contributor and experimented with instruments not usually associated with popular music, including the sitar, Appalachian dulcimer, Japanese koto and marimbas" Also, "An inaugural release of the album era and a rival to the contemporaneous impact of the Beatles' Rubber Soul (1965)" Well, it's no Rubber Soul! I quite like "It's not easy" I'm quite looking forward to this being over. It's weird. I can imagine if any of these songs came on in a café I was in, I wouldn't mind and would quite like them, and some of the sounds I like, but a whole album kind of creeps me out.

Honestly don't understand the hype around this album, did not enjoy. Overrated in my opinion. Listened to both US & UK versions

I know it's sacrilege in some circles every time I, as a fan of rock from its roots to today, share my view that I'm just not all that wild about the Stones. There are a number of songs of theirs that I do like, and a few I truly love, but overall, I don't enjoy listening to the majority of their stuff. Yep. I know. I'm banished from Rockdom for this. If anyone needs me, you can find me at the disco.

Meh... de svängigaste låtarna skits på av lyricsen

Surprised by how little I liked this. Listened to the UK version so no Paint It Black and didn't particularly have any stand outs for me.

Liked the songs I already knew. Otherwise not my thing.

I wanted to rate it higher but ended up skipping a few songs because of the repetitiveness of the lyrics. I wouldn't opt to listen to this again.

Some classic 60s stones here. Even for the times it feels like a series of attacks on women. I've never been a big fan of the stones and this isn't even close to their best work. 5/10

Not fan

The 69s called, they want their go go boots back

Ik vind Jagger eigenlijk maar irritant en hun muziek heeft me eigenlijk op halve uitzonderingen na nooit kunnen intrigeren.

I'm not a fan of this album. There are some classics on here, but, for the most part, it is bluesy Stones' rock jams that are relatively middle of the road at best. I prefer Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed by a long shot. This was underwhelming.

A couple of what would become classic tunes on here, but a whole lot of not-at-all classic stuff too. Sounds like they are throwing plates of spaghetti against the wall to see what would stick. There’s a reason they have so many Best Of compilations, stick to those. Some killer, mostly filler.

Meh, but I feel that way about The Stone in general

Too old fashioned and boring for me

Ambling directionless through hardly strictly, wondering when I can go home

Only been doing this three days and already had two Stones albums

Only a couple songs really did anything for me

The Rolling Stones' UK release of "Aftermath" in 1966 marked a pivotal moment in their career as it became their first album to feature exclusively original compositions. The album showcases a diverse range of musical styles, with standout tracks like "Doncha Bother Me" delivering an infectious rhythm that undeniably slaps. However, personally, the experience of the album feels like sitting in a dimly lit saloon bar, sipping on pitchers of mediocre, flat lager. "Aftermath" is notable for being the first Stones LP to embrace true stereo for the majority of its tracks rather than electronically recreated stereo. "Out Of Time" screams Beatles-influenced, highlighting the dynamic musical landscape of the time. While opinions on The Rolling Stones may vary, and I would argue that they're massively overrated, "Aftermath" seems to remain a crucial chapter in their discography, showcasing the band's evolution and experimentation with different musical elements.

Totally overrated

Similar to the other album, but less orchestra and more blues rock. Great guitar tones, but just okay songs.

Interesting but only few songs I would hear often

fine. not my style

There are a couple of bright spots, but mostly I just felt like shrugging my shoulders and saying meh.

Yet more bollocks from these chancers

More like the Rolling Bores!

Had to knock it off half way through. Bored the tits off me.
