Supremely listenable for a live album - such a pleasure to relax with. Easy 4.
Beautiful and magnetic
Pros: For an album released in the 50s, the qualityia decent and Sarah Vaughan voice is really good Negatives: The album is a tad bit long
Stark fyra. Det här gillar jag.
4/5
Solid old time jazz singing.
Classy vocal jazz
Sublime 4/5
This was very cool. I love that 50’s jazz sound, and combined with a great jazz singer, definitely creates a vibe.
Very mellow and smooth like a baileys with milk. The live audience was a nice touch to record it like that. Don’t listen to music like this much, but will again now. Calming and the poetry was great.
A great jazz recording that is fun to listen to. But it didn’t make a lasting impression.
Never heard of her before. Bit samey throughout for my taste but shows her sense of humour in a few songs.
This record is smooth and full of beautiful jazz songs accompanied by Sarah Vaughan’s silky vocals. I can’t believe I loved this that much. I look forward to getting this!
This was phenomenal. I didn't realize it was a live album. The production and sound quality of this blew me away. The piano playing was great, and I liked the candidness, and the playfulness of Sarah during this. There were a few mess ups, and a bit of stage chatter that was fun. I would definitely listen to this again.
Pretty chill jazz.
smooth
It was a nice album, I think under the riffs Ght circumstances I could have really enjoyed it. Worth another listen for sure. Upon further listen I enjoyed it more and more. Her voice is so soulful and the atmosphere of the recording really makes you feel like your in a dark jazz bar sipping beer. Very nice album,
absolutely loved this and will absolutely love it more upon a re-listen. what a beautiful voice
Sarah’s voice is beautiful!
WHAT A VOICE. So cool to hear her being so playful with the lyrics too.
Bueno, me ayudó a bajar de putear normalmente a 30 conductores a tan solo a 5. Para tomar con luz cálida tenue, un vino, comer queso con esos tenedorcitos de copetin chiquititos plateados y reírse.
Me gusto. Chill para estudiar.
Riktigt najs asså
I’m always a bit skeptical of live albums, but how else am I gonna know what a Sarah Vaughan concert sounded like in 1957? So smooth. Is the clunky improv on “Willow Weep for Me” a bug or an actual feature? I could argue that either way.
Oh yay, finally, a woman! 😂😂 But seriously, I thought this was charming and lovely. Her ad libs are so cool—I felt a little like I was in that club.
Editing could have been better
Absolutely divine
Sarah Vaughan has a fantastic voice and a great stage presence. I enjoyed how she improvised on the live recording. A lot of live albums today are basically just studio-produced album, but with occasional crowd applause. This felt like an actual show that you could have been at.
amazing
Never heard of her, really enjoyed this, likes the intimate feel of the place she performed in. Check it out
I like jazz quite a bit, which is why it's weird to me that I kind of have a hard time writing about it. What I love about the genre is often some nebulous interplay of performances, virtuoso ability, and vibes, so bear with me here. Anyways, I liked At Mister Kelly's a lot. This is a vocal jazz live album by Sarah Vaughan, and the fact that it is live is very important, I'd go as far as to say that this may be in the conversation about all time great live albums. This feels exactly as it should: intimate and warm, with little things like the introduction and crowd noises and recording quirks that really put you in this little jazz club while you listen through this. Firstly, as one might expect, Sarah Vaughan is the star here. She is a fantastically talented vocalist, and her voice is beautiful to boot. She is confident and charismatic on the mic; she has great annunciation and a distinct voice as well. She hits incredible vocal runs, and can express a wide range of emotions too. She even flubs with grace and humor, cushioning the audience with a little humor on How High The Moon and Willow Weep For Me. Her backing band is incredible as well. There is a pianist, a drummer and a stand-up bassist here and they are incredible musicians. The band is always locked in and tastefully improvising, giving Vaughan the space she needs while simultaneously making themselves known through their performances. There is serious talent in this much restraint. The only thing holding this album back is that these are pretty much all jazz standards instead of originals. However, that's not as much of a problem in jazz where interpretation and improvisation are so much of the genre's DNA. Ultimately this is great, it's sweet, and cozy and displays some real ability from everyone.
Warm, cozy, beautiful. 8/10
Lovely. Not exactly my style. A little boring to me, although I can appreciate the skill, craftsmanship and soul.
wish they wouldn't do live albums. nonetheless this lady is incredible
That voice is incredible. I don't care for jazz all that much (or live albums either), but the vocals carry this album. It's can see myself listening to it again if I'm in the right mood. The scat singing on the last track nearly knocked it down to a 3 though.
Прекрасная джазовая певица своего времени ! Чистая, душевная, очень атмосферная ! Включить для переноса во времени - и полетели. Хороший текст и джаз.
4.0. Great voice and stage presence.
Yep, I like the 50s! Who knew!
dig September in the Rain Off album: If You Could See Me Now // Contralto, is okay but that's a new word Baa Baa Black Sheep
1. классический джаз, по крайней мере, в моем понимании интересно, что альбом идет 35 минут, и более того, это запись концерта. или так составлено. поражает, что это действительно запись 1957 года из джаз клуба.
Amazing voice, really fun audience interaction. I felt like i was there in 1957 in the audience.
Pretty good
Favorites: September in the Rain and Be Anything But Darling Be Mine
Lovely
À réécouter
delightful
Loved how “live” this actually is, the audience interaction and ad lib towards the end of Willow Weep For Me is amazing, as well as her charm at the beginning. Just imagining being in this club in the 50s is so exciting, this was my grandparents era and I just love to picture it. This album really makes that easy, brings it to life. Both her vocals and the recording of them are crystal clear, it’s incredible, absolutely beautiful to listen to. How High The Moon was fun, the improvised lyrics with yet more of her personality shining through was very fun, makes me smile, but the scat part did get a bit old quickly. Most: Willow Weep For Me Least: Just a Gigolo, but didn’t hate it Rating: 4
Great jazz club album. Not familiar with the artist other than her name. Enjoyed the listen.
She's lovely
a lovely voice and sense of humor!! And a great mix tbh
Yes please. More hidden gems like this. Less early 90’s Brit-Pop.
Incredibly crisp and clear for a live album and very pleasant. Probably because it's at a jazz club and everyone in the audience is silent. Very enjoyable album to listen to.
this was nice. tbh i find i very rarely am in the mood for this kind of music but it is good and obviously her voice is amazing. i listened to it on the bus and it was very sunny and i felt quite sleepy and it washed over me in a pleasant way.
A fun surprise. I love that it was a live album.
Went in with 0 expectations. Not a huge jazz fan, obviously like some albums, but not a huge listener. Pair that with it being a live album from someone I’ve never heard of or listened to, I had zero expectations for this. Well, that was great because this fuckin rocks. Absolutely beautiful album. Feels like you’re truly there.
Erg goede live recording, glasheldere sound. Er zijn niet echt nummertjes die heel erg uitblinken, maar het is een prettige luisterervaring
I had never heard any of her music before this. So talented. So smooth. LOVE the love recording.
As a non-jazz person, I really enjoyed the warmth, atmosphere and playfulness of this album.
It was interesting to see an exclusive live recorded performance. Its and older jazzy album that you can tell was made on the spot from the album. That doesn't make it bad or dimmish its charm, in fact it only adds to it like when she forgot the words and adlibbed lyrics. Her singing is beautiful and the piano with drums can put you to sleep not in a bad way. Its very lullaby like and I can appreciate that about jazz. Favorite song was September in the Rain.
• what a beautiful voice and sensibility for using it • some of the arrangements felt overly repetitive, especially Just One of Those Things, but the album is strong front to back
She’s got a beautiful voice, and I really loved hearing the English version of in September in the rain
I adore her voice, nice performance on this one.
Not listened before
Crazy voice. Very beautiful and chill vibes in this live performance. Very relaxing and smooth.
very enjoyable jazzy music. Good vocal techniques. At first I didn’t quite like her deep vibrato but very soon I realised it suited the music so well. Plus she has a very nice tone! Easy 4 star.
I thought with a short wiki article and someone that I hadn’t heard of that I would just come in and be like “jazz, cool” and give a two or three but this really surprised me. She has a super pleasant voice to listen to and just overall smooth good listening jazz. Also the live album here really takes it to the next level, more so than some of the other live albums we’ve had. Full with mistakes and improvisations (on top of probably already improvised jazz) that really make you feel present.
Incredible talent and a great, quick listen. Love that they kept the recordings with the mistakes and ad-libs in it since that’s such a big part of the genre. Would happily give this one another listen.
A perfect album for Sunday morning while making pancakes. Vaughans voice is silky smooth, and I could listen to it all day. I just wish this wasn't a live album. I want the cleanest recording for her voice. The audience didn't really add much to the performance which is the only reason you would want a live record rather than in studio.
Jazzy and a lovely voice and dynamic range!
Jazz Sängerin der 40er - 70er Jahre.
I love how much personality this album had and it's really nice soothing jazz
Vocal Jazz / Live Performance Recorded live at the iconic Chicago nightclub Mister Kelly’s in August 1957, this album captures Sarah Vaughan in an intimate and spontaneous setting. Known for her unmatched vocal control and rich tone, Vaughan effortlessly navigates standards and lesser-known tunes alike, engaging directly with the audience in between numbers. At Mister Kelly’s is one of her most beloved live recordings and showcases her blend of technical brilliance and warmth, backed by a tight trio that lets her voice take center stage. Great live jazz with singing, good vibes. No complaints just a great album 7.5
Great album, it felt like a warm blanket.
Great live album. Slow and sultry, Sarah's performance is fantastic and the recording quality is superb. Can't really give full marks for a bunch of covers, but this is something excellent to throw on and relax while still exhibiting some complexity. Listened to: at work. Favorite tracks: Be Anything Darling But Be Mine, Stairway to the Stars
Similar to Amy winehouse where it is Jazzy with someone singing.
Great vocal, great jazz. Love it.
Vibes album. You can absolutely tell why filmmakers fell in love with this era. Oozes suave and you can almost see the cigar smoke. What an album to relax to.
Cozy vocals, fun vibe, and surprisingly good audio quality.
I’m not sure if anyone reading this has gotten this album or has yet to get to it, but some time ago, I was given Sunday At The Village Vanguard by the Bill Evans Trio. I remember commenting how surreal it was to hear a live album that actually sounds live. The small chatter of the crowd added a lot to that album and gave it a lot of its charm. Sarah Vaughan At Mister Kelly’s gives me the same feeling, but it really emphasizes the “live” feeling of the album. From the introduction at the beginning to the “mishaps” that Sarah effortlessly works through (on Willow Weep for Me and How High the Moon), it really embraces the live aspect without feeling like a dull montage of the hits sung in front of an audience. You didn’t have to be there for this, it’s taking you there now. It also helps that Sarah’s a great singer. I sadly never heard of her before this album. Her voice is really soothing, regardless of whether the jazz is swinging or smooth. It feels really playful, especially when she has to improvise. All of these elements make this album certainly one of the better jazz albums I got. All it need is a nice atmosphere and some alcohol, like scotch. Too bad I got this on a weekday… Favorite track: Stairway to the Stars Other hits: September in the Rain, Willow Weep for Me, How High the Moon, Just One of Those Things, Be Anything But Darling Be Mine, Honeysuckle Rose
What a beautiful voice
Nice somber and melancholy sound
Lovely vocals and recording
I didn't think an unknown (to me) singer from the 50's would make an album I wanted to listen to, let a lone a live one, but this was great. For a live album this barely sounded like one; I guess the huge amount of microphones mentioned in the opening track worked a treat. Vaughn's voice comes through really well and she's got the exact timbre and tone for this kind of music. I also liked that she played around with the audience, especially in "How High The Moon" where she admits she doesn't know the words and references Ella Fitzgerald, all while singing perfectly. This was great. Not my usual style at all but really well done.
Well that's delightful, her phrasing is fantastic and her vocal control, a master of her craft. Just a question, why with these earlier recordings are we just as likely to get a live concert? Especially as studio work was basically live in a more controlled environment. Just wondered. 4 Star.
Anfangs dachte ich Fallout vibes Tlw schön synkopisch Banger Album, bester track how high the moon Funktioniert gut als live Album, atmo und Länge gut
really pleasant vocal jazz album. sarah vaughan's voice is incredible and underrated as a name from this era that should be brought up in the same vain as ella fitzgerald, et al. this really is a live recording - there are some ad libs here that are pretty funny and goofy and definitely live. the band here is pretty solid and never detracts from sarah's voice. it's a super chill album, and i liked it a lot.
Sarah has a beautiful and strong voice that it’s crazy to even think this was live and not edited at all. The jazz ensemble was also great behind her and together the track was calming and beautiful. Tbh sounds like something you’d hear at olive garden.
A nice listen, wouldn't be my usual cup of tea. Wouldn't go out of my way to listen again but it's quite relaxing in the background. 4/5.
4/5
Love this jazz singer
Really nice piano bar jazz session. Some really lovely moments of fun on stage, chatting to the crowd, making jokes, which really gives this already lovely performance a little extra richness.
Dosta opuštajući album, sviđa mi se. Klasični jako, tako da nije nužno dinamično cijelo vrijeme, ali eto danas mi je to čak i odgovaralo. Glas joj je isto vrh. 4/5, 7/10
Great album. The little fumble had me laughing, but overall, I enjoyed this.
This is a live recording?! From 1957?! In all seriousness, Jazz (particularly vocal jazz) is a huge blind spot for me as a music fan. It just hasn’t been something that I’ve sought out for no other reason than there’s just so much music to listen to. I have a constant feeling that I will never listen to all music that deserves my attention, simply because there is not enough time in my lifetime to not only catch up to a century’s worth of great material, but also stay current. This album doesn’t help. Now I definitely feel like I need to listen to more vocal jazz… phooey. Vaughan’s voice is really great and the live recording does a really good job of making me “feel” like I was in the room that night. I found the moment she forgets lyrics and just starts scatting “cause Ella would do it this way” very amusing and contributed to the overall laid back feeling of this night at Mr. Kelly’s.
8/10, def gonna listen again
There is so much to love about Sarah Vaughan‘s album “at Mr. Kelly’s.” First off I love that the producer left the introduction explaining to everyone they were going to be involved with the show. I also love that Willow Wept for Me included a vamp that not even Miss Vaughan knew one was going to end and she just kept rolling with it, making it into a joke. This entire album was made in such a way where it felt like you were sitting in the club with her, listening to her beautiful voice and experiencing her amazing talent first hand. In modern day, when even live albums are re-dubbed and reproducing in studios and studio albums are overproduced with ProTools making it accessible for even the worst singer to sound good, I appreciated the raw authenticity of this album. Sarah Vaugn is an American classic.
Not a fan of jazz but her voice is mesmerizing
At Mr. Kelly’s is a great live showcase of Sarah Vaughan’s insane vocal talent. She sounds effortless up there—like she could sing the phone book and still make it swing. Her tone, phrasing, and control are just on another level. It’s a stripped-down setting, but that only highlights how powerful and smooth her voice is. You get the sense that the audience knew they were witnessing something special. Easily one of the best live jazz vocal albums out there. Man, she was really talented.
Sarah Vaughan is incredible! I wish I could have been there in Chicago. I wish we still bred performers like this because how timeless is her voice and style!
Definitely one of the greatest jazz singers of all time. And interesting to see a live album on here. This is one of those records that works for almost any mood. To just chill and relax, or put on a rainy day and stare out the window pensively
What joy in that voice!
Wow, what a charming performer! What perfect vocal control! That vibrato is almost TOO good. Dang.
I didn’t know Sarah had a voice liar that
Great dinner music.
This on a rainy day was magnificent. Great timing
Really quite good and love the live vibe.
Not usually wild about a live album but I really enjoyed this - her voice is incredible, and I like my jazz bands like I like my earrings: brass-free.
It sounds like elevator music, but I would go up and down all day long in this elevator. Great!
So warm and cozy. I just felt transported in time and place to a Chicago nightclub in late 1950s, filled with cigarettes smoke, alcohol and beautiful, warm voice of Sarah Vaughan. Perfect album for a late night at home.
I was surprised that she isn't more well known. Her voice is warm and captivating. Not the type of music I usually listen to, but this was good.
I had never heard of Sarah Vaughan before, but this is great. Good jazz, good voice.
Very cool to listen to her work as a live artist with improv, adapting to mistakes and audience banter. She's a hell of a singer, I've looked into her long ago cause I heard she was who Tim Buckley emulated figuring out how to sing.
Sublime! I’ve never consciously taken note of Sarah Vaughan before, but this album leaves me wanting to know more. I loved the little mistake made at the end of Willow Weep For Me. It’s so real.
All songs are killer, but not sure I appreciate How High the Moon and Willow Weep for me flubs like an audience in 1957 might have. Also not her best album.
I will be listening to what I believe is the original release which is nine tracks long, versus the twenty-track expanded edition. I don't think I've heard of Sarah Vaughan before. I gather that she was a jazz singer and pianist with one of those "golden voices" in the scene. Able to go from soprano to baritone with good volume and control, Sarah was compared to opera singers which is remarkable. I got that impression going into her live album from Mister Kelly's jazz club in Chicago. How Sarah carried these jazz standards like "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Just a Gigolo" with such precision and bravado is astounding and pleasant to listen to. Even when she forgot the words to "How High the Moon" at the end, she scat sang with enough charm that I honestly didn't mind. While I don't see any immediate problem with this performance, I think my hangups stem from the more lively live-album experiences I've already had on this list where the performance from the rest of the live band and the audience involvement were more energetic. For example, Sam Cooke and his band got wilder with his soul tunes for the Harlem Square Club performance, and the audience was singing along and hollering for it. I'm not sure how much energy you can get out of vocal jazz in a club, but Sarah's vocal delivery here makes me think that the band should've matched with her and made something more stand out from what probably was translated from the studio recordings. I still enjoyed popping into Mister Kelly's to witness such a wonderful voice at work.
A fun jazz album, didn’t love all songs but loved the overall vibe.
Do you like jazz! Sometimes, yes!
Fühlt sich sehr live an. Also nicht nur weils live ist aber man merkt die Kommunikation in der Band und das is nice. Es vibed mit mir aber wahrscheinlich nicht jeden Tag. Ich würde hier 3,5 geben.
Well done, soulful voice
2/3/25. Really good jazz vocal album, first time listening to Sarah Vaughan. Very chill and peaceful vibe for sure, Willow is a standout!
Really really really lovely. I've not heard of Sarah Vaughn before but she has a fantastic voice and it's incredibly endearing whenever she forgets the lyrics to a song and scat sings on this live recording. I can't say I paid the closest attention to it but I will hopefully come back to it.
I love her voice and how chill this live performance is. And the ad libs are funny.
JAZZ!
Usually not my style but I liked this, the vibe of the live performance was cool. 4/5
gotta be one of the greatest singers ever. Great trio arrangements and good tunes.
A really great voice, and a fun live recording.
Wow, great voice. She has a sense of humour too. Interesting to hear an early live recording where it goes a bit wrong, but still sounds great. How High the Moon is brilliant.
it really feels like i’m sitting at the bar where this was recorded
Just gorgeous
i like it when she does an ella fitzgerald impersonation that was very funny. very soothing album, would recommend
A live album that did not seem as such! Incredible voice. Good jams.
Entertaining
Haven't heard of Sarah before, really loved her voice!
It was great!! I wish it had a little more of a theme, but I loved the sound overall
A beautiful voice and love to boot. I envision hosting a cocktail party with this playing in the background.
Incredible fallout music vibes
Отличный джаз!
****A beautiful album, reminder of how good the big band era was.
Smooth and comforting, the jazz you want to hear
Len once booked Houmous & Chutney on a Christmas do to see Sarah Vaughan at a very well known Jazz club in Soho. Unfortunately he booked the wrong club. We saw an extremely eye opening show but there wasn’t much Jazz involved! 4.2
I finally got what I wanted out of a live Jazz album on this list rather than that hokey performative slop that was Tom Waits' larp as a Black Soul performer talking about what he had for breakfast. Feels very well produced too, they mention how there were a lot of microphones used during the introduction but the actual recording of the performance itself feels almost like a studio. Very impressive stuff
Great instrumentals from the band and vocals from Sarah Vaughan. This genre of music isn't typically my speed but I enjoyed this album quite a bit overall.
Some genuine masterpieces on this thing, shame it's so front loaded 9/10 Fav tracks - Willow Weep For Me, Just One of those things, be anything but darling be Mine, how high the moon
Jazz to me has always been like tea. I like it, but I’ve always preferred coffee. This album isn’t something I could listen to anytime but, like tea, it’s nice to sit down and really take it in when you have the precious time to do so. The live performance aspect of this doesn’t add as much as something like Live At San Quentin but it gets you in the mood to listen. The vocals are amazing, the instrumentation is good and if you have a rainy lazy Sunday I couldn’t think of anything more suitable to listen to. Highlights: Be Anything But Darling Be Mine, Thou Swell, Just A Gigolo
I used to hate this kind of music. I used to think all jazz was boring and pretentious, until I recently started to get more into it. I started with getting into more avant-garde jazz, as I found it to be more interesting and instantly likeable. But even now this more soft easy listening evening dinner jazz is starting to appeal a lot more to me now. It's great to finally start to be more open to music I used to think sucked. Either that or I have become boring and pretentious myself, who knows.
Really nice, really fun. Normally I don’t like live albums all that much but this was really fun. I loved when she was just kinda improving like at the beginning of track 2 and the last track, made it feel very personal. Vaughan has a great voice even if I don’t love the vibrato all that much. Very classic sounding and a very nice listen.
Beautiful performance by a great singer the recoding is is wonderful.
Classic Jazz singing, that doesn't drag on. Sarah has a very nice warm voice, that she has absolute control over. The most iconic song was probably honeysuckle rose
liked songs: all of them Now THIS is a live album. The production, flow between songs, audience sound, "mess ups" and little moments here and there all make me feel like I'm sitting in the jazz club where this was recorded. Sarah Vaughan is such a huge talent. Her voice is incredible. The backing trio is talented, but doesn't overdo it and lets Sassie's voice shine through. 4
No way this dhit on here
Starts and ends strong with SV’s rich and melodic voice and charming persona.
I love live albums! Her voice was gorgeous and she even made her mess ups sound good. Her talent jumped out of the headphones for me and who doesn’t love old timey jazz?
I had no Idea that Sarah Vaughan had an impeccable sense of humor!
Prior to listening to this album I had never heard of Sarah Vaugn, but wow is her voice beautiful. This isn’t a typical album I would pick up and listen to but I am happy I did give it a listen. My boyfriend on the other hand, as soon as I heard the first song I knew he would love this album, he overheard it and asked me to send it to him for him to listen. My favorite song is
I’ve listened to this a few times—it’s good. Sassy’s fun, and like most live albums, I’d have much rather been there. Not my favorite live or jazz record, but it’ll keep getting the occasional spin.
i’d actually never heard of her, and then started talking to people about her and felt stupid because most people have. This album exceeded my expectations. Well done.
Smooth jazz that really captures the live atmosphere of a club. There are mistakes included and that just adds to the charm. You feel like you're there. Best Tracks: September in the Rain; Just One of Those Things; Honeysuckle Rose
7/10. Sarah Vaughn's vocals are stellar. I enjoy the audience engagement that is audible in this album. I find the fact that she forgot the lyrics of one song to be really funny. :)
Ottimo per le cene in compagnia. Grande cantante.
Wonderful. The quality is amazing.
Pretty good album. Great recording of a live performance. Wouldn’t be my top pick to listen to again but definitely solid.
Pattering in her own lyrics with deference to Ella Fitzgerald, her voice really shines through. I don’t usually like vocal jazz but this is very nice to listen to
brilliant
What a set of pipes on her! Magnificent
Great vocal jazz, different from what I normally listen to but really liked it
Qué gran voz y cuánto feeling. No conocía a Sarah Vaughan pero sí me gustó.
beautiful singing, dont think i would throw very many on a playlist but just imagining seeing this live is crazy. electric
This album is a tough rate. I'd say if it was a studio version, easy five stars. However, the "live" aspect has its ups and downs. I liked the feeling that I was at the performance, but there's a reason why live versions of songs that are recorded for radio/personal listening are rarely as good as studio versions. Loved Vaughan's voice, but at some times it was overpowering. I have no doubt this concert was amazing live, but at times it did not translate well into the recording. However, with it being from the 50s, the recording was pretty decent.
Classy and surprisingly relaxing. They're not doing anything mind boggling but the simplicity is refreshing.
Really lovely album. I particularly enjoyed the cover of How High the Moon, which is just a very cheeky and fun last track to include here. Sarah has a lovely tenor
A solid afternoon playlist addition at the mythical “Cafe Kelvinos”
Idk what to say other than a whimsical throwback to the 1920s and I can really taste the ambience it can give.
Beautiful voice paired with the piano is such a perfect pair. Keeping in the audience talking and some riffing done by her makes it such an immersive and welcoming atmosphere
A really good album, love the older style of music. My favorite songs on the album were Willow Weep For Me and Just A Gigolo.
An amazing singer. I would love to have been there.
Jazzy
Immersing yourself in this album is the imaginative equivalent of experiencing a glamorous night out on the town without having to tip the maitre'd to get a better seat. This 1957 live recording is stunning in its execution and centers Sarah Vaughan's contralto within the fast and fluid conversation between the piano, bass, and drums. Her voice is warm and rich like a buttery caramel, and her delivery is both impeccable and playful. It's a live recording that feels intimate and authentic. It reminds you of the way jazz should be experienced - in a tailored suit or in pearls (or both, it's a free country) in a dark and smoky club. I just wish that this, rather than David Lee Roth, had been my first introduction to "Just A Gigolo."
Enjoyable!
Quite nice jazz, but not the absolute best of the era
Difficult to believe this is live- what a voice!
Usually ain't about live albums but this was pretty great. Captured the feel really nicely and gat damn those pipes
What a wonderful voice! Never really listened to Ms. Vaughn until now and this live album blows me away. Wow.
Will listen to it again, my first singing live jazz album, loved sarah vaughn's voice, although her discography is huge iam still open to exploring her other works (even though i said the same thing to a tracy chapman album & since then i haven't touched her discography ), i avoid ratings in my reviews so the review will be simple if it impresses me I'll give that album another listen otherwise not.
Jeg synes, at den var sindssygt god og behagelig og hun virker til at have været en vidunderlig performer og jeg blev meget inspireret af hendes evner til at synge.
Great album, short but sweet mistakes and all!
Actually really entertaining listen! Favorite tracks were Be Anything But Darlin Be Mine and Embraceable You The whole listen felt very real and organic. I appreciated the introduction and random noises/mistakes the band made. Really happy after. Ill probably revisit this at some point to do some more digging
Needed this palate cleanser after yesterday's cacophony. This gets 2-3 stars alone for being a beautiful period piece. I'd never heard of Sarah Vaughan before, but what a gorgeous voice – that vibrato, that lilt, that range. From a vocal perspective, I'm sure people have made a ton of comparisons to Billie Holiday, Ella, Nina Simone. But as great as her pipes are, and the vibe, and the backing band, the songs aren't super catchy or memorable compared to those artists – to my ear at least, they mostly sound like jazz standards – which is probably why she doesn't have the same legacy as those greats. And I'm not a huuuge fan of scat so I cringe a bit when I have to sit through it. But overall really enjoyed the listen and will definitely come back to it.
Laid back relaxing jazz I can see myself listening to again (while smoking a cigar and having a whiskey on rocks)
Lovely voice on top of a pleasant piano band. Sarah's heavy handed use of bravado sometimes rides the line between tolerable and annoying so that's a knock for me. But the production quality for an old live album is great.
Приятная мвзыка, успокаивала в очень нервный день
Really well produced, Sarah Vaughan has a lovely voice and the way she handled a few mistakes by making jokes (in tune with the song!) made me laugh! I've never heard this artist and really enjoyed it overall - a very good rainy evening album to put on.
Really made me wish I was in the room when it was recorded. I've generally avoided live recordings, but I'm realising now that that's the opposite of what I should be doing when listening to jazz or blues. It feels so warm and human. I love the off script moments and the into telling the audience that for that night only they're Mercury recording artists too - it all gives such a lovely feeling of time and place. Beautiful cozy voice.
Fundamentalist jazz, great.
Beautiful voice
I've never heard of Sarah Vaughan before today, and that's a shame honestly. I LOVED this album from beginning to end.
Fav: Willow Weep For Me Least Fav: Just A Gigolo Incredible voice, very cosy sounding album
I used to think live albums were just worst versions of the actual thing but this list keeps showing me amazing live albums! This is another example of an artist using the live format to their advantage and it's great! Singing and instrumental are great!
What a beautiful voice. Love the crowd interaction on this album too 4/5
I love her voice, so much that I feel the need to give this album 4 stars for the first time in this challenge! Favourite song: Stairway to the stars
it’s some smooth jazzy vibes
A fantastic jazz album. The fact that it is a live record helps to set the mood and you really can almost smell the whiskey and cigarette smoke from the atmosphere. Excellent singer, excellent record. Favourite songs: Honeysuckle Rose, September in the Rain, Just One of Those Things, Be Anything But Darling Be Mine, Thou Swell Least favourite songs: How High The Moon (scat singing is fucking annoying) 4/5
Will be giving this one another listen. Fantastic singer! She brings such character to each song. There could well be a different vocalist for Willow Weep For Me and Just One Of Those Things. Stairway To The Stars is a fantastic tune.
she has a great voice but i just don't really care for live albums
Not my kind of music but Sarah Vaughan is an excellent singer which made this an enjoyable listen.
Super chill. Need this on vinyl
beautiful..simply beautiful..
Pretty good! Classic jazz. Will listen again.
Wonderful voice and just very timeless.
Great raw blues. Very real. Loved it.
Well isn’t this a lovely surprise! “Out yonder where the blue begins, The moon will guide us as we go drifting along…Let’s build a stairway to the stars”
i liked this so much, very relaxing and intimate...her banter was so cute, i especially loved the silly scatting in the final track :') her warmth and charisma as a performer is so apparent even through audio. fav tracks: september in the rain, honeysuckle rose, how high the moon
This was so beautiful; she sounds so effortless when she sings. I love the moments where she's interacting with the crowd and worked self-deprecating lyrics into the song when she messed up -- an extremely natural performer and I'm sure seeing her live would've been so cool.
Smooth Jazz at its best.
Really lovely snapshot of a different time. Saying that, this is closer to the year of my birth than we are now. I want to be there, with a single malt or perhaps an Old Fashioned.
83% Best: Be Anything But Darling Please Me Mine; Stairway To The Stars; Honeysuckle Rose Must-Hear? Sure
last song has lied-on-your-resume energy
very pleasant, great voice
Shame on me. Einer der wenigen Lichtblicke dieser obskuren Liste.
Intimate is right and Sarah is making this look easy.
Nice
Nice album to listen to. Her voice is great and the performance is very solid. Hearing some of the levity of the live performance gives it a comfort that elevates it.
Not familiar with this artist. Sounds really good for a live album. Just one of Those Things - nice bass line The voice on this lady is pretty good. Being a little cheeky on How High the Moon is fun. Sometimes I'm Happy is a cool track. The sonic quality overall is pretty good. Very close to a 5 for me. I will look up more of her
Very enjoyable. I'm always a big fan of live albums that are this good. 4/5
Great tunes, great voice
Enchanting! Great remaster of the album made me feel I was there. Would have stayed for the second and third and fourth show just to listen to it again
a beautiful example of the powerful and controlled vocals of sarah vaughan, and the talent of the trio behind her. i’m not personally a fan of live albums traditionally, but i thought this record demonstrates all the great parts of a live album, removing the perfection of the studio, and making it feel altogether more human. very little else to say, and i would definitely listen again.
Original sound.
I'm normally not a big fan jazz or live albums, especially because live albums tend to have a bit too much extra noise interfering with the flow of the music. Also, the sound quality of live albums is usually not great. However, the sound quality of Sarah Vaughan's At Mister Kelly's is surprisingly quite good for the time. Also, as it is quite a laid back album, the crowd discussions actually add to the experience. You almost feel like you're there, laughing along to the jokes and listening to the music. I'd never give an old live album a full five stars, as that is reserved for the very best albums and I don't think live ones can ever reach that. It does deserve a high rating though. Sarah is a great singer, and the instrumentals are relaxing.
Lovely, lovely voice.
Just lovely easy listening
Fun, really interesting jazz concepts
I enjoyed this. Very easy to listen to. Sarah Vaughan’s voice is great. I also like these live jazz records that are like 30-40 minutes. A breezy way to start my day.
Very good 50s/60s jazz album
elegant, swinging classic jazz trio with the wonderful Roy Haynes on drums.
I have to admit that I have never listened to Sarah Vaughan until today cause I thought “ oh that sort of music isn’t really for me” Boy I was wrong, I loved it. As soon as the MC did his introduction I was hooked in, then she forgets the words and it’s all kept in as a true depiction of what the concert was like. The only mistake I made was listening to this while on a walk. This really should have been listened to late at night, in a wingback chair with a nice glass of whiskey.
Beautiful singing and masterful jazz drumming from the legendary Roy Haynes
Old jazz type or wtv. Very nice.
Æðisleg rödd, flott hljómsveit, góð lög. What's not to like?
A great and sparse piece of live vocal jazz.
Not really my cup of tea but did give me a lovely cosy old-timey feeling and I enjoyed it for what it was.
What a voice. Sarah Vaughn could play her instrument like the finest virtuoso. This performance captures her in such subtle charismatic way. The little mistakes with song lyrics turn into happy, even magical, accidents. Her command of the audience is apparent, they are soaking up every curve of word she accentuates. The instrumentation is gentle and sparse enough to allow her voice to float up front undeterred. A great moment of raw talent captured in prime form.
Não é meu tipo de música, mas nem eu posso negar que ela tem uma voz incrível.
I thought this was lovely
Love this style of music. Great voice and feel. Back when singing took real talent and charisma.
What a beautiful, charming performance, she really is divine
yeah i mean what can you say the lady can sing
If I was in the room when this was being recorded I would simply melt into the floor
This is what i was expecting this list to be, things Ive never heard but that are cool. Jazzy live album, maybe her voice is too prevalent and the music hard to hear clearly. Nice though
A pretty enjoyable listen. I like jazz singers, so this was a win for me.
The extra comments from it being live made it a bit more special
good jazz
A pleasant little listen
Not my usual, but this was warm and cozy and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
This is a great album and I'd never heard of Sarah Vaughn before. Will be adding her to the rotation for sure.
Great live set
Lovely voice
Beautifully sung, smooth and comforting. Not music I would put on to listen to specifically but perfect background music and incredibly easy on the ear
I really liked this quite a bit. It might be five stars with more listening.
I love Sarah Vaughn and that this recording actually makes the listener feel like they are sitting at a table with a cigarette and a cocktail is a gift to us. Her vocals are maybe only second to Ella.
Enjoyable
Felt like September in the Rain.
Solid live jazz album! I love how raw and imperfect it is at times, while still being smooth, chill, and overall incredible.
While some may dislike parts of this album for including mistakes and Vaughan forgetting lyrics, I actually rather liked those inclusions. It humanized her, and made the performance feel less sterile and more authentic. Live music is never perfect, and to have represented it as such would’ve been a mistake in itself. That said, while Vaughan had a wonderful voice and was clearly very talented, and while the songs are brilliant, I didn’t find her or her performance to be strikingly or significantly different from other female jazz singers of that time. She even admits that, when she forgets the lyrics to “How High the Moon,” that she’s going to try to sing like Ella Fitzgerald. So I guess k just didn’t see that much that differentiates her from her contemporaries. Which I suppose is a pretty high compliment, comparing her to Fitzgerald and Holiday. But if she doesn’t stand out from them, why is she here? If you’d played any of these songs for me and told me it was Fitzgerald, I probably would’ve believed you. Four stars for outstanding talent. Could’ve been five stars if she’d brought something unique to the table besides her mistakes. Standout tracks: September in the Rain, Just One of Those Things, Be Anything But Darling Be Mine, Honeysuckle Rose
Very relaxing and easy listening. Crowd was into it as well
Lovely voice, nice vibes, pleasantly short
This was lovely stuff. Imagine kicking back in 1957 at Mister Kelly’s with a stiff drink and listening to this. I think I just need to go to Ronnie Scott’s again. Simpsons: Yes
A jazz album I really liked! Really nice vocals, chilled music that I would definitely listen to again.
I liked it a lot. I always wish with jazz vocalists that the rest of the band get a chance to shine though.
Hmmmm jazz? I've never hear of this. ooooh I like her voice. Wonder what she looks like. And yeah, totally jazz. I loved her voice and the vibe. I will give this album 4 stars
I really liked the time capsule/vignette side of this. The guy's intro, and the moments where she talked to the audience gave it a great sense of time and place. Generally that style of super clean, annunciated jazz singing isnt really my cup of tea, but I can appreciate it. Album cover: A
I enjoyed learning about Mister Kelly's. Wish we still had cool iconic stuff like that. Mister Kelly gets a 5/5. The album was like peaceful background music you would hear at a coffee shop which was pleasant but didn't make me feel inspired.
Great voice, but the instrumental overall is a bit boring. But for a live record, this is very good.
live jazz from 1957, nice
Very pleasant to listen to. Vaughn has a beautiful voice.
I'm not a fan of jazz singers, but Sarah Vaughan will always be my exception.
Sarah Vaughan is a great example of a person finding their niche. She has a wonderful "jazz" voice. Her music is like how jazz should sound. It is too bad I am so poor with knowing the genre. Sometimes I listen to jazz music all day long, but never really connect names and faces and bands. Nevertheless this is really top knotch!
Dayyyum.
Incredible voice
Great vibe, incredible voice.
Fantastic recording and really amazing vocals.
This was a fun little jazz record (which I think is poorly represented on this list) and I really enjoyed the live improvisation. Quite fun.
Goosebumps ! Gorgeous
Very mellow silky jazz. Perfect listening at a piano bar or cocktail bar or cosy dinner for two. Recording very clear for 1957, must have been remastered. Good chilled out listen. 👍
Very nice jazz album.
What is better than a jazz album by one of the best jazz singers of all time? Why, a live jazz album that perfectly showcases just how incredible her voice was.
I like the way the singer plays the notes, I haven’t really heard this for so long. I liked the unusual intro at the beginning of the album.
So smooth and puts you in the right mood
A classic Jazz Crooner. What a voice.
Beautiful voice.
Cozy jazz music. Apparently a live album but you couldn't tell most of the time. Stand-out: Just One Of Those Things
Total mood of an album, in the best way. A lovely performance, with an intimate vibe that makes you wish you were there. Fave Songs: September in the Rain, Be Anything (But Be Mine), Just One of Those Things, Willow Weep for Me, Thou Swell
A really pleasant listen. Feels like you're sitting in a small club simply enjoying yourself. A lot of the songs blend together
- a collection of stunning ballads sung by Sarah Vaughn. All of a slow tempo, pure beauty and calming to listen to. - beautiful vocal performance by Sarah Vaughn, so much tenderness & attention to every vowel & note. Amazing breath support and control. -funny to listen to, things going wrong in venue/with recording, but very entertaining and refreshing to listen to something that isn’t too ‘perfect’. - the meaning is all in the music, no pressure for the band members to get it right every time- purely about communicating the beautiful music that they’re sharing with the audience. - lovely piano playing, band are very tight & support Sarah Vaughn very well.
Beautiful voice
This is my kinda jazz. Melody, melancholy, wistfulness and a bit of wit all wrapped up into one nice package. All the while sipping on a classic cocktail. A great entryway into exploring more of her material.
