I could see there being a temptation to lump this into other jazz albums or put it in the “good background music” category, but that would be underselling how talented Sarah was. What an incredible voice, her skills are completely on display here with a live recording. I love how she screws up a couple of songs in (though I didn’t notice) and pretty effortlessly jokes about it with the audience mid-song. Seems like she was doing exactly what she was meant to do. This is a near 5 for me.
Who knew Sarah Vaughan was the answer to the question “how do we get Eric to like jazz and a live album?” Not sure this is worthy of a 4* on its own, but it’s a gateway drug to the rest of her catalog. And for that reason I’m rounding up. 3.5/5
It’s not the Sarah Vaughan album I’d have picked to be her representation on the list, but this was an enjoyable set. Vaughan seems more relaxed than usual, even intentionally butchering How High The Moon. It’s all quite fun, even if I don’t think it’s one of the more revolutionary or essential Jazz records
walked in the park, soft sunlight, gentle wind, listening to this
Lovely old school jazz
Another amazing example of the talent of musicians in the late 50's having Sam Cooke's live album just last week. She nailed everything she set forth to do on the album: the highs, the lows, the jazz... and all while still relaxed like she's singing at home
I was not familiar with Sarah Vaughan at all before listening to this. I’m upset I hadn't heard her sooner! She’s absolutely lovely.
Beautiful recording. Sends you back in time. Will come back to this record for sure!
I love albums like this. Some fun banter over a few mistakes made during the live recording, and this really adds to the album's liveliness and humanity. Really great tracks, too, especially for a long-time fan of jazz singers. It's certainly a snapshot in time, and Vaughan's voice is lovely. Cool idea to include the warning given to the audience at the beginning of the album. Really makes you feel like you're there, and the recording quality reflects that, being surprisingly high-quality for a 50s live show. The songs themselves are excellently written, as individual tracks, but perhaps not the most varied or interesting setlist when played back-to-back. Backing instruments are played well, if a little simply. The understatedness kind of works here, though. Nifty. 4/5
I find it weird that the guy who introduced Sarah Vaughan said she would be using lyric sheets, and on two of the songs she didn't know the words. Were there no rehearsals? Particularly if they knew they were going to be recording this show? That kind of took me ought of it a bit. Apart from that, everyone in the band did a great job. I wish there was more to the performance, apart from the two songs where she flubbed. I guess that makes it sound more "real", but it just made feel less like an official recording, which was what I thought they were going for, and more like a bootleg recording. I have no problems with a bootleg recording; but it just seemed contradictory to what they were going for. I dunno, am I being too picky here? It's just that if it's something I am going to listen to it over and over, I don't want to skip tracks because of flubs. So 4 it is.
Great voice and I enjoyed the playful nature of the whole show and recording. Vaughan adlibbing and singing she missed her cue in Willow Weep for Me or doesn't know the words to How High the Moon (but is going to sing it like Ella Fitzgerald) was endearing, and helps bring out the connection to the audience, which the recording captured well. You can imagine yourself sitting at a table listening to the whole performance.
This old vocal jazz... it's super lovely and Sarah Vaughan is amazing but it quickly sates me somehow, sadly.
4/5. I enjoyed this record. The sound quality was surprisingly good for the era.
Sarah Vaughan is undeniably wonderful, but I'm not a fan of live albums 99% of the time. Whilst this was a pretty decent one, I would've preferred a proper studio album.
Really wonderful! I enjoyed the feeling of being in a club listening to Sarah Vaughan live in concert! The recording was so crisp and her voice was lovely. I’m not super into the jazzy scatting but there was only a bit in this one compared to Louis Prima. Definitely would listen again!
Perfect jazz performance. Takes definitely to that smokey jazzy club feeling. Smooth greatness You can clearly see who influenced Amy Winehouse the most
Absolutely lovely.
This album felt cosy and warm. Favourite track: Just One Of Those Things.
Classic sound of the best jazz era
Beautiful voice! I don't always love jazz, but this collection of songs was delightful.
swanky tunes, old style club music is fire
I <3 talented women 3.7/5
What a great performer, and what a voice.
Better than I expected. Easy/fun listen. Would have been a blast to be there. 3.5/5
Nice, relaxing. Album was mostly great, last song sucks but otherwise cool
Sarah Vaughan is undoubtedly talented, witty and funny.
What a voice, wow.
Nice, old timey jazz
I’m a simple man - I hear a live jazz album, I rate it highly.
:D
Beautiful voice. Very Ella Fitzgerald style vibes.
Sarah Vaughan is an iconic cabaret/lounge singer that's often forgotten about when the "greats" come to mind. Nevertheless this timeless collection of originals and covers is the basis for any phenomenon vocal performance. Also for 1957 the production on this live album is devine.
Great album
A great live album. I wasn’t alive when it was recorded, yet it somehow transported me back.
Lovely smooth vocal cool jazz - the only thing that was jarring was "How High the Moon", and that was a jape, so forgivable. A very pleasant listen! Fave track - "Willow Weep For Me" where she fluffs the timing and has to improvise was charming AF!
Candlelight dinner with loved one and friends, enjoying drinks and listening to dessert. This album takes you there.
Loved this! Always imagine being in the crowd at a place like this.
Pretty lovely to listen to I especially loved How High The Moon and the Ella Fitzgerald shoutout. It just isn't 5 star material and while it is good I don't see it as an essential album.
Ég skil ekki af hverju ég hef aldrei heyrt af Sarah Vaughan áður. Þarf að skoða hana betur. Fíla þessa plötu.
effortless class.
good jazz, wouldnt listen to often, prob like a 6.5
What a great voice
“We’d appreciate if you act normally, as you would” lmao, love the MCs for the live jazz albums. They always seem awkward. I like having a vocal jazz album, I’ve been listening to a lot of instrumental jazz and having that take a backseat to some phenomenal singing is a nice change of pace.
I’m a live album enjoyer, it’s true. I love the intimacy, and the ability to hear people having fun; the artist and audience laugh, crack jokes at some points, and I just think that really adds to its charm.
Great jazz album love her
Good Saturday morning album to clean and do food prep to, or just relax. Beautiful voice
Not the greatest jazz album i’ve heard, and with no standouts, i could’ve does without this
Lovely. I'd listen to this again! Classics
September In The Rain Be Anything But Darling Be Mine
Excellent voice. She could make singing the phone book sound delightful.
Relaxing. Fun and obviously off the cuff. Made an interesting listen
Nice old jazzy music
Enjoyed the composition and vocals.
Willow Weep For Me and How High the Moon were really fun, September in the Rain and Thou Swell were my favorites
Love this style.
Never heard of this before. Boy, what a sound. What a voice.
If you're Amy's favorite, you're my homie, too.
love love the idea of a live album. i wish i was here and lived in the era of jazz bars. and holy moly sarah vaughan has the most incredible voice. willow weep for me >> 8/10
I stood on dog shit while listening to this. It's not Sarah's fault of course. I don't really like standing on dog shit it messes up my nice leopard print trainers. I was less angry than usual cos this woman sings so beautifully. She gets an extra star for that. Sue me.
Beautiful voice -8/10
I think the music sounded pretty good but it’s not my vibe and just isn’t what I was in the mood to listen to. Don’t think I’d listen to this by choice not bc it’s bad but I’d just rather be listening to something else 7/10
7/10 - Very enjoyable. I liked the scatting and the old timey feeling of the songs. I liked her voice a lot which is a nice change of pace from the recent albums
Makes me want a martini
It has jazz notes and I like it
I like her voice - and this great live performance, too
Very sensual album. All expected. Still great. Class.
Favourite Song: Be Anything But Darling Be Mine I actually tried to have this as some calm background music while I read, but it kept catching my attention and I don't think I got through more than 2 pages. A really wonderful, heavenly voice.
Beautiful voice, nice listen
Timeless voice and great backing music. I felt like I was daydreaming on a sunny day.
Very much enjoyed the album and song choices.
Had a hangover this morning so I was glad it was this and not Napalm Death today. Never really listened to Sarah Vaughan, and I'm unfamiliar with much of these songs, unlike the stuff you'd find on similar records from Ella or Billie etc. Not really sure why she isn't the household name at the same level as those two as her voice certainly compares. Very different to the Louis Prima Just a Gigolo! But delicious, delivered like this. The voice particularly incredible in this take. Listened to the original 9 songs. Might check the reissue with other stuff on another day but more likely to go to studio stuff. Live gives and takes here, a long intro not separated from the first song track, 2 songs messed up, one in more entertaining way than the other. The general atmosphere is excellent. Zippedy doo dah
Really liked this. I have a soft spot for live albums.
For its time it’s recorded superbly. You can hardly tell it’s live. For 57 this is unbelievable. Great writing and singing and does the job of anachronistic time travel
Absolutely lovely. This is what a live album should be; an experience unbroken.
smooth, groovy, accessible jazz. well done, fun live album
I love and respect Ella and Billie. But Sarah is *my* jazz vocalist. She is perfect and divine. 4.5/5
She's quite good. That's all I have to say.
Don't usually like live albums, but this was charming, intimate and funny.
Really good dinnerusic or a sexy date!
I don't even care if it is generic or monotonous, or if it is a freaking live album. I could listen to this all day and not be bored of it. What a voice!
Good listen
Wonderful, warm vibe. Sarah has a lovely voice, I am enjoying it a lot. The interaction with the crowd is very endearing and the joking lyrics to some of the songs add a lot of character to the album.
Wonderful album
live recording is nice
The way it was recorded really makes me feel like I was there at Mister Kelly's in 1957. Very enjoyable to listen to.
Good vocals and good jazz.
How do you not like jazz? I feel like Seb from La La Land right now
-omg another live album!!!!! -never heard of sarah vaughn but im very excited -okay vocals POP OFF!!!!!! -i love the live albums because its very authentic and i like hearing the artists talk -she genuinely has such a beautiful voice -and a GREAT band behind her -i can just imagine myself there sitting and listening and watching -UGH the scatting i love it -okay RANGE! -loved this live album its a four from me
Beautiful voice. I needed to be in the mood for this album. It's good to study or to relax to. I'd love to hear it live.
Sometimes music is too minimalistic but voice is great all the time.
Such a warm splendid voice she has, and the band is just super chill, absolutely nailing the vibe. It was weird that they included the preamble announcement to the crowd, but I actually found that it added some anticipation, and put me in the room. Her improvisational joke at the end of "Willow" doubled down on that feeling - like we're at the concert and get to be in on the mishaps too. The one song I question is "How High the Moon" - she seems to sort of cover Ella's version, which is a version where she also doesn't seem to know the lyrics. It ends up being a weaker end to the album. Really enjoyed this though, her voice is so incredible.
Her voice sounds so familiar, but I can't pinpoint where I have heard it. Might be featured on a different song I know. Probably was in a fallout game. She has got a great voice. Hate live albums, but somehow the two live Jazz albums from this list have been good enough for me to not even notice they were live albums. If it weren't for the first track and the song names I would not have known this was a live album.
It's actually great, and I'm not a live album person. Because it leaves in the mistakes, and the Sarah Vaughan loves the errors and the chance to improvise and have fun as much as the performing itself. Bot a fun wit and some gorgeous old fashioned jazz.
*sips negroni* mmmmmm *lights cigarette* eooff😶ahhhhhhh😮💨*sips negroni*
Phenomenal jazz album.
I'm more of a modern jazz Guy but this is exceptionally well done
Całkiem przyjemne. Lepsze niż ten poprzedni live jazz. 4/5
If you like jazz this is a great album. The recording quality is immaculate for a live album from the 1958. It’s fun to hear the banter with the audience between the songs. Has a very authentic performance element to it, from accidental mic bumps, to the audience speaking to the band.
V cool! Amazing singing. I knew of Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday, but never Sarah Vaughn. This music helped get me through 2 weeks of graveyard shifts in the lab, and I'm eternally grateful for that.
Beautiful. I have little patience for 99% of jazz vocalists, but Sarah Vaughan is the top 0.01% alongside Fitzgerald and Holliday. I’ve known the name, surprised I haven’t heard more of her music before this.
Great for Christmas time. So fun to hear everyone laughing and having fun in the audience. Never heard of Sarah Vaughan before but she’s got a lovely voice and sense of humour when she sang “Ella Fitzgerald sings this song” it rang from one ear to the other a bunch of times don’t know why but felt weird. I was looking up outfit inspiration for Conlan’s wedding while listening to this so hit me up what you guys are gonna wear and we can discuss -B
Now this was fire. Loved that it was a live album. How high the moon, love this version of it. Her little improv was awesome
felt like time travel to 1957
Qué interesante y particular
Loved the atmosphere! How High The Moon made me laugh.
it's okay, I wish there was more of the jazz club atmosphere, more talking and people noises
Never heard this one before. Streamed it on Spotify. Vocal jazz live album. An intimate laid back performance with a lower fidelity recording quality to it. I love the atmosphere this one creates. It really transports you to a small, smokey lounge. There is even the occasional background and ambient crowd noise picked up in the recording other than just moments of applause. The performance here really captures your attention as you feel she is singing to you personally. I would definitely love to listen to this one again and may look to find a copy on vinyl although it looks like this version only has the first half of this 70+ minute performance.
First listen Saved 6/9 Top track: Just One Of Those Things
Incredible voice.
mágico
sarah vaughan is the love of my life nuff said
4/5, but a 5/5 background live jazz album
It's jazz live recording... then at least 4
Sweet jazz album. Enjoyed a few songs
She's is a goddess!!!! an incredible woman!!!! Great listen, completely soulful and engaging... cooking company!
so much character on this one
While jazz is not my favorite, her voice is undeniably gorgeous.
4.5
Trèèèès smooth
Good. 3.5
Should listen again. Great evening music
Quite mesmerising, like opening a time-capsule. The Album is a live-recording from the 50's, you get the experience Sarah Vaughan improvising and interacting with the audience, laughing, all probably long dead. Quite the experience. And her voice is just.. to fall in love with.
Beautiful voice
Voice is extraordinary, mellow earth angel vibes, loved it
Rainy day jazz
This is nice, but feels messy in some parts. It’s such a mood and I enjoyed it, but I understand why it wouldn’t be for everyone. 4/5
Gentle jazz, has been a pleasure listening
No expectations going in. Very smooth jazz and an easy listen. Best song was track 3
Wow, this is great and I'm bummed I've never heard of Sarah before. Exactly the type of thing that I want to listen to on certain days and she has an infectious voice and personality in this record. A new fan for sure.
Smooth but boring
Vibes are immaculate, very cool how this album was recorded live Girl boss icon jazz queen stan ✨
Pretty good live album. Length was good for a one sitting listen
Live buff
P good vocals
Points for going full Jack Black there at the end
Very good. Classy tunes. Love the fact it was recorded live. Really charming
Strong vocal jazz album—Vaughan is quite impressive, although I left feeling like I hadn't heard her very best. The improvisation in How High the Moon was funny, but didn't seem to fit the tenor of the rest of the album. Quite enjoyable overall, 7/10. Favorite Track: Willow Weep for Me
I’ve never even heard of her, but she sounds lovely. I’m so glad this journey started with jazz. She’s also so funny. I’m really enjoying the fact that it’s live.
I listened before bed and admit I fell asleep, but I enjoyed it prior to that and I did fall asleep. That’s a win.
gorgeous fun album. gives fallout. loving it
This was a great, pleasant listen! Live recording, she is funny, personable, with a beautiful voice. Left a more positive impression than last R&B/soul album (Lady in Satin, I need to figure out what genre this is). 4/5.
Excellent record, really brought to life by the nature of it being a live recording. The extended version is probably a touch too long, but the original track listing is a tight selection that really does place you in a 1950s jazz club.
Ein Livealbum mit einigen (ich vermute) Jazzstandarts. Gute Musiker und gute Sängerin. Ich glaube man kriegt genau das, was man erwartet.
Im not super well versed in vocal jazz, but Sarah Vaughan is undeniable. I’m not really sure why this particular album is the one selected as her entry on this list. It’s very cozy and intimate, but it doesn’t feel like an essential album. I gotta imagine there’s another one that does her more justice.
Great album. One of my favorites.
super clean recording. very nice set.
One of the most entertaining live albums we've gotten. One because the music is pretty and entertaining and energetic. But also, because it showcases what can be FUN about live albums. On track 2 she drops the mic and on track 9 she forgets pretty much the entire song. That shit is COOL and human and reminds us why live albums have any appeal at all. it connects us to the artist
Loved this album, really reminded my of Ella Fitzgerald. My kind of vibe 4/5
Sympathisch
An intimate recording with a sweet and magnificent voice.
Not my normal cup of tea, but this was delightful.
A beautiful voice, and a great live album. I enjoyed the intimacy of the environment, and loved how Sarah Vaughan was clearly a little nervous but still just flawlessly improvising.
Such an interesting easy listen. Not my sort of thing usually, but real chill. 4*
remarkable
Pretty flawless. I thought the music was a touch too subdued (though obviously it is there to frame the voice, and it could be the recording/mixing).
So for my first non-rock album I have done for this project, At Mister Kelly's was a pretty good start for me to start branching out into other genres of music. Sarah's voice was very good and the audio quality was so good that if you were to take out the things that made it a live show, you could genuinely trick me into believing that this album was recorded in a studio. The songs did kinda blend together but other than that, This album was still really solid Best Song: Just One Of Those Things Worst Song: Thou Swell
That voice!
Lovely live recording
Honestly it was a great listen
I was almost determined to not like this, a live jazz record by someone I've literally never heard of before from the 1950s sounded like a punishment. However, it won me over and it was actually enjoyable enough for me to listen to the Spotify 35 minutes, then hunt out the "rest" of the album that wasn't available there. This was definitely a good move, as some of the later songs were brilliant. I love the fact that this is so live that there's not just the odd mistake, there's an entire song where she doesn't know the words and just makes it up on the spot. Sheer brilliance!
у каминчика бы зимой это послушать, прям хорошо было бы
Это чилловый джаз. Это хороший голос. Это классические песни. Ну звучит оно мило и приятно. Всё?
Decent, somewhat raw but charming in a way
Her charisma is off the charts! Such a nice record, kudos to the piano player too!
Cigars and smoke filled rooms kinda vibe, needed a drink and a suit to enjoy this. Love her voice
Interesting Jazz album. Great to hear the live recorded version.
Esse álbum é muito bom. Uma delicia de gravação.
Very nice live performance!
I could listen to this over and over. Sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday. Clear like a bell. It's nice that they keep the bloopers. How High the Moon is a bit disappointing. Either do it your own way, or do it Ella's way but really go for it (hard mode). But don't do it Ella's way and half-ass it. Then the contrast it just too obvious.
It was amazing, loved the truly live feel, that they didn't cut out things that nowadays would be trimmed to make it tighter and neater. Had never heard of Sarah Vaughn before this and now shes on a part of my daily rotation
I am such a slut for a live recorded album and this one is fantastic. Gonna have to replay Fallout.
I often put on mid-20th century jazz musicians while working, so Sarah Vaughan was a nice addition to the daily grind. Maybe it’s because I didn’t know anything by her coming into this listen, but I do generally prefer the artists better known for the songs on this live album than Vaughan herself. A prime example is the opening “September In The Rain.” While not originally by Dinah Washington, her 1960 performance surpasses all others with its string-dominated background and more consistent tempo. I already associate “Honeysuckle Rose” with the Queen of Jazz, so in my eyes any other performance is bound to fall short of Ella’s. Vaughan’s rendition of “Just A Gigolo” sets quite a different tone than Louis Prima’s does, but I’m here for it. My favorite version of that song, though, has to be David Lee Roth’s. What could’ve been a staple of Diver Down might just be Roth’s best solo work. I feel like At Mister Kelly’s would’ve been better with more originals instead of songs already (or soon to be) perfected by others. But at the end of the day, Sarah Vaughan has one of the best voices in jazz, and there’s no ignoring that.
Just really lovely to listen to, and oh so smooth. It makes me want to sit at a cabaret and down a bottle of wine.
Netter Hintergrundjazz bei einem Abendessen.
Despite it being a live album the recording was very clear. Love her voice will listen to more by her
Fun, intimate recording, everyone is on point and in the groove, and that energy can't help but rub off on the audience—both then and now.
Very chill, very enjoyable.
Really enjoyed this introduction to her. Honeysuckle Rose, Be Anything but Darling Be Mine, Stairway to the Stars were standouts after the first listen. Love the emotion, and I would like to explore some more.
Such a beautiful, classic voice. This album also offers a bit of insight into the time, with the novelty of a live recording made evident by the introduction. You can imagine being in a small jazz club, knowing that this was going to be on a record.
I am not a jazz enthusiast by any stretch but I have been exploring the genre more and more. I found this to be a really good 50s style jazz album. Sara Vaughan sure can sing and her backing band is great. I listened to this on both loud speakers and headphones. If it wasn’t for the applause and the glitch at 4:03 of "Willow Weep For Me” (a mic or something was knocked over), you might mistake this for a studio album. So charming the way she recovered and sang some improvisational lyrics making fun of what happened. The recording is so good, this one would be worth owning on vinyl.
A pleasant surprise. I usually don't care much for live albums, but this one had such a great sound that it really brought you back to this one supper club in 1957 Chicago. Sarah Vaughan's voice and overall performance was top notch. A nice touch is including all the "mistakes" and improvisation done by Ms. Vaughan on Willow Weep For Me (which she apparently messed up) and How High The Moon (which she sang without knowing the words). The imperfections - and the singer just rolling with it - gives the record an authenticity you don't hear often otherwise.
Vaughan is on top form here; relaxed and having fun. Her voice is sublime and the understated accompaniment from the trio of Jimmy Jones, Richard Davis and Roy Haynes is the perfect foil for her.
The atmosphere is smoky and eerily 50s the songs are smooth, sensual and it being a live album adds to the sincerity and charm, this probably isn’t a album I would normally listen to, so I was pleasantly surprised.
Calming good vibes, jazzy
Each song contains a consistent flow and mood. What is really cool is that it's almost like a time capsule that takes you into a Chicago jazz club in the 50's really making this album a historically relevant album. Considering the songs, they are all solid I had never heard of Sarah Vaughn before this album and maybe that's because she up against all the other ladies of Jazz who are even more popular, but she has a wonderful voice that is even more impressive considering it was all live and then her improv is impeccable and humorous. Not too mention her backing band is chill and helps create the atmosphere. September Rain was probably my favorite track
50’s vocal jazz is a nice genre, and this record is fairy charming. Sarah Vaughan is a pretty good vocalist, and her personality comes through on this album (just listen to ‘How High The Moon). Granted, it does feel a little silly and unprofessional, but it humanizes the singer. Also, one of the instrumentalists was born in 1925 and is still alive. Cool.
Allow me to preface this by saying that I don't think I heard the full album -- Wikipedia clocks this album in at 72 minutes, with 20 tracks, whereas the version on Spotify features only 9 songs in about 36 minutes. I didn't expect to be particularly into this, but it was a lovely listen. Sarah gives a phenomenal live performance, but not everything goes smoothly through the recording -- she goofs the lyrics near the start and again at the end, and her sense of humour and hearing the audience's light laughter gives this a breezier feel than I perhaps expected. It's quite charming, and prevents this from becoming a stuffier affair, as 50's jazz albums can become. Still, throughout the majority of the record, it is the sound of professional musicians doing what they love, and doing it well. I'm glad Spotify featured a shorter version of the album, as it may have gotten old by the hour mark, but the 36 minutes I spent in an old 50's jazz club this morning was enjoyable indeed.
Lovely voice, smooth piano jazz. If you like jazz, this is great, but it's just cocktail lounge background music to me.
Impecable. Increíble pensar que este álbum se grabó en riguroso directo, tal como se anuncia en la primera pista. Virtuosismo vocal sin segundas tomas, porque no son necesarias.
I loved this so much that I immediately looked up the cover Sarah Vaughan did of "Rainy Days and Mondays" only it was titled Rainy Days and "Monday", which I should have recognized as a warning. She recorded the Carpenters cover later in her life, and it shows. It sort of threw cold water on the great live album I just listened to, which captured Sarah Vaughan at the peak of her powers. She deserves to be mentioned along with Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald as amazing song interpreters.
Sarah's voice is absolutely phenomenal. I'm taking from another review of this album when I say this, but it's entirely accurate and the perfect description of this album: It's just like a warm cup of coffee and a fuzzy blanket on a cold December evening around Christmas time. I love it!
No soy muy fan del jazz pero puedo decir que este álbum no estuvo mal, le doy un 8/10 me agrado bastante.
This is a good album that I probably would not listen to again, but it's a great example of 1950's lounge jazz. I'm not sure why the cover of Ella Fitzgerald was kept on the album, especially when there is a deluxe edition with better songs, considering Sarah Vaughan did not know the words. As much as I enjoy a goof, not for three minutes.
She's definitely got pipes, and it doesn't overstay its welcome. Solid live album.
A live album that’s genuinely fun to listen to! Sarah Vaughan encompasses both elegance and a sense of mischief.
I really liked that. I think th elive aspect made it feel like I was there. What a fantastic voice
A great jazz album that is the epitome of bar atmosphere with a wonderful host. Still can't get behind scat in vocisl jazz.
I love a live album where it feels like you're there. You can picture it, because it just captures a unique vibe. This isn't my favorite style of music but it's still great - can definitely tell that she was influential for artists like Amy Winehouse. I love it during Willow Weep For Me when there's some type of disruption and everyone laughs. The way that Sarah Vaughan handles it so gracefully and changes up the lyrics to comment on it and then laughs about it at the end. It's a great moment and I'm glad they included it on the album. 4 stars.
Live jazz albums hit so different. You can feel how intimate the setting is, and the artists tend to be the most personable with their audience. Performance wise, this is excellent too. Her voice is magnificent. Favorite track: Thou Swell
I don’t think I’ve come across Sarah Vaughan before. Apple Music is saying she is jazz, so I’m a little apprehensive as usual. Hopefully, it’s easier to listen to that some other jazz music I’ve reviewed recently. Let’s listen and find out! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Willow Weep For Me, Honeysuckle Rose This was a very cosy listen. It was recorded live, and you can tell that Sarah was having fun with the music and with the crowd. There are a couple of times where she ad libs because she the song was over, and it’s very charming how she deals with this. Her vocals are pristine throughout and the music is easy to listen to. Overall, this is one of the better jazz albums I’ve listen to.
Beatiful voice with excellent control. She's certainly got a distinctive timbre that makes her identifiable as well. Very nice selection of tunes - some sincere and heartfelt, and some with a nudge and a wink, and some with both! I love how she makes a mistake in "willow weep for me," acknowledges this mistake via singing, and at the end remarks "they'll probably use that one" Even the greats are human, of course!
This is sensational. Extremely beautifully sung jazz here. Favorite track: Honeysuckle Rose
4.5
The effect of presence is brilliant. Today I was there, really. At those club, among the others. What an experience!
Me gusta su voz y me gusta mucho este disco en vivo. No es una mera traducción de las canciones desde estudio al bar, salón o sala de concierto.
Great and vibey
Wonderful voice and the live album is charming with the joking - a pleasure to listen to!
nice jazz for background
Calmest, most peaceful 35 minutes of my life
Off to a good start. Nice jazz, she's got a great voice. Live album means you get to hear the interaction with the crowd and some banter. Makes it feel very live, I dig it. How High the Moon -- she doesn't know the words, admits it, and copies Ella Fitzgerald and scats the verses. Badass, that's hilarious
Strong 8/light 9, very nice
This is a great album—solid musicianship, great vocals. I love the live recording and I’m not usually a fan of live recordings.
An angelic and intimate counterpart to Ella Fitzgerald's more spunky and bustling 'Mack the Knife" Berlin concert. More than a good album, this record is a nice place to be at. It is a bit samey across its runtime but Sarah never fails to delight - the thing really takes off with an entirely scat improvization of How High the Moon that is simply jaw dropping.
delightful stage banter. surprised by the modern sound of the voices (like for the introduction). stunning vocals, as expected.
I was a bit bored at first, since while the live aesthetic was nice, it seemed like pretty straightforward vocal jazz of the era which isn’t necessarily my favorite. However, the ending track “How High The Moon” absolutely sold me. It felt very improvised (which I assume it was) both instrumentally and lyrically, and Vaughan’s personality absolutely was gushing out of it. I could listen to that one over and over, and it makes the whole album, and it heightened my opinion on the rest. Really good album.
Should have listened to this with my coffee. Absolute dumb decision on my part that I did not. Extremely cosy and comfortable. Usually the live sound bothers me, but this album uses it in an intimate fashion that only heightens the experience.
No es mi tipo de música pero muy chill
Really enjoyed this one! Great voice. Reminded me of music they play at mcnally Robinson. An album I'll go back to for sure.
A really smooth and lovely listen, even if I may not regularly revisit.
4/5. A super relaxed and well-sung album. The silly songs and side bits matched with the sad and emotional pieces really drives the human aspect of this record. It’s beautifully haunting.
Love Sarah Vaughn. One of my favorite Jazz vocalists of all time. This is pretty good and I like the casualness of the record. I am not a huge fan of artists who take themselves too seriously. Not really a bad song on the album. 9/10
This wonderfully splendid live album feels as though you're taking part in a delightful experience of musical aptitude and overall brilliance, as the calming, lilting voice of Sarah Vaughan takes things beyond a notch and delivers an incredible performance from beginning to end without fail. Mister Kelly's sure was lucky on the night of this show. Favorites: September in the Rain, Willow Weep for Me, Just One of Those Things, Be Anything But Darling Be Mine, Stairway to the Stars, Honeysuckle Rose, Just a Gigalo, How High the Moon, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write a Letter, If This Isn't Love, Dancing in the Dark
Jazz vocal. Está bien. Un 4.
So smooth, really nice chilling music
Increíble su voz
She has an angelic voice and anytime you are in the mood for excellent smooth jazz, this is where to look
That's a voice which knows just how in-command the room can be. The band gets room to stretch, but of course it's a vocal jazz show. As stretching goes on that end, the longer tracklist is plenty enticing.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and went on a nice jazz rabbit hole afterward. 4/5
Brilliantly calm jazz album, perfect for a rainy day or when looking to relax. Beautiful vocals and backing band.
A jazz nightclub album. I enjoyed it. The singer was very good. Felt like you were sitting in at a table in a nightclub. I wish Jazz nightclubs were still a thing I would go.
Just beautiful. Yes, she uses her voice like a horn and like any good horn player she occasionally overstretches and bends notes too far. Her attitude is winning, too (as when she forgets the lyrics, though perhaps the second instance feels a bit contrived). "September in the Rain" might be the highlight right out of the gate, though "Embraceable You" is a strong second (full disclosure: these are songs one loves). "Write Myself a Letter" and "Dream" and "Just a Gigolo" and "Lucky in Love" are also strong. The trio’s playing is the star of the show, however, so elegant and understated. Speaking of under, jazz is just hugely underrepresented in this book. Oh, to have been in the room that night, to have been for that time a Mercury recording artist of one's own.
What a voice. What an absolutely stunning voice. The atmosphere on this live album is sublime. You can hear every clink of glasses, every laugh and even the microphone stand fall over at some point. It’s almost like you can smell the dense cigarette smoke that must’ve filled the air. The only thing missing from this being a five star experience is being there yourself.
She has a beautiful voice. Very smooth jazz vibe.
May be the greatest vocal performance I've ever heard! Not sure what more praise I can give for Ms. Vaughan, her voice is so soothing. As for the accompaniment, I'm a sucker for laid-back jazz.
-good start, love me some older songs -forgot to type stuff but it was good
Banger
Really great recording, you feel as if you're part of the crowd in 1957 jamming out. Wish the host's intro was separate from the first track (my fave) so it wouldn't become tiresome but all in all very good!
It's not what I would usually go for, but it's really good!
Honestly, I don't usually like live albums since I feel like they don't capture the sound well but I really liked this one. I'm also not a huge fan of jazz but it feels like they kind of cancel out in a way? It's also possible I just don't prefer just instrumental jazz. Plus 9 songs and only 35 minutes? I love that.
Not bad
What a classy live album. This is how live albums should be, and honestly, in the best genre of Jazz. I don't believe a concert album should be on this list, but many Jazz albums are at their best in front of a live audience riffing with the crowd. Especially a crowd that is very small and intimate which makes it almost not feel like a live album. All that to say I really enjoyed this one. I don't think I've heard Sarah Vaughan before but I love her voice.
A live album, and it turns out it's another artist on the list of "Black artists who only get one album on this list and it's live." The atmosphere is excellent though, a sultry jazz club setting. The live elements here work well to transport you to that time and place. Her voice sounds very familiar and comforting. A handful of standards in here, but she does great work with them. Great music to have on in the background, and not in a demeaning way. This kind of jazz is just relaxing. Great job Ms. Vaughan. Favorite tracks: September Rain, Willow Weep for Me, Dancing in the Dark, Just a Gigolo, Embraceable You. Album art: Actually quite good, I like this city nightlife scene. A lot going on in the picture, but the font/title in the top corner keeps things grounded. Really dig this cover. 4/5
Absolutely beautiful voice
beautiful voice, casual setting, easy to get lost in
Nice voor de zondagmiddag. Zeker opgeslagen
better than ella fitzgerald in my opinion
Beautiful voice, I wish the recording quality were better or I was there in person.
give me a cigarette and let me smoke inside
Excellent. Sarah Vaughan is a wonderful singer and she sounds very relaxed and comfortable on stage here. I like that the recording leaves in the loose and candid moments too. Like when she jokes that she messed up “Willow Weep For Me,” or when she confesses she doesn’t know the words to “How High the Moon.” Great backing band. The pianist (Jimmy Jones) in particular caught my attention a bunch.
Really beautiful vocal jazz. I've never listened to her but I've been meaning to ever since hearing this lyric in a Father John Misty Song: "We sang "Silent Night" in three parts which was fun 'Til she said that she sounds just like Sarah Vaughan I hate that soulful affectation white girls put on". She does have a beautiful voice and the piano really gels with her performance nicely. That's something that is always trying to be captured in jazz and captured in jazz recordings because so much of what makes jazz good is the chemistry between the performers. Most jazz albums are pretty much "live" anyway right? Just not always in front of a live audience. Definitely differs than other genres (pop, rock) where everything is recorded separately and meticulously worked on. "Stairway to the Stars" really blew me away. Very mysterious and intimate. I love the improvisational approach in "How High The Moon". The lyrics are hilarious! She's like "I don't know the lyrics to this song but I'm gonna sing it anyway. Ella Fitszgerald sings this song real real real crazy. [scat] That's the way she sings it, so I'm gonna try to sing it that way for you so here goes." Incredible!! This album went by way too fast for me. I loved it. Will listen more and I'm now a Sarah Vaughan fan!
honeysuckle rose & willow weep for me are gorgeous songs. beautiful album.
Literally who is Mister Kelly
Absolutely riveting voice.
She had a lovely voice.
jag trodde jag inte skulle gilla detta, men började uppskatta ädnå .
Short raw funny and of it’s time. I really enjoyed it
Excellent album, fine production values for its time.
Powerful vocals, as well with an excellent band performance. This has to be a live album that is better than some contemporary studio albums.
Jazz vocal. Está bien. Un 4.
Nice and smooth.
This was great. I found myself drifting away getting caught up in the music. Don't tell my boss.
i would hear it again because it´s a good album if you want something diferent and if you want to relax
The album cover, rainy night, night life, neon sign, old timey cars (well they are now at least) is just perfect to put you in the mood for some vocal jazz in a cozy Chicago club. I wish the recording was better. Sarah Vaughan's stellar vocals and sparkling personality shine through none the less. Great choice of songs, great band, great voice. I don't usually enjoy live albums, but in this case the crowd and the zigs and zags of the performance add a little extra magic. The whole album feels like a wonderful memorable night out.
es muy especial sentirte dentro de la grabación desde el principio, es un directo precioso. Sarah Vaughan canta fenomenal y la banda la acompaña maravillosamente. 6
Stunning vibrato and performance, something falls over during Willow Weep for Me and Sarah improvs some lyrics and the audience start laughing, love it
What a singer and innovative one of the finest jazz singers
4.0
For my son’s generation, it was N’SYNC vs. Backstreet Boys. For my generation, it was Rolling Stones vs. Beatles. For my parents generation is was Sarah vs. Ella. I say why choose! This is an intimate live performance.
-Very nice chill/relaxing album -Perfect for nighttime
This is the music I often crave - swanky, soulful & cool. I had never heard of Sarah Vaughn, but I'll be listening to her on a weekly basis (she fits perfectly my work playlist of chill-jazzy artists). Gorgeous voice.
la (no) hermana de los hermanos
Great voice, loved the live feel, last few studio songs weren't as good
Charming and relaxing.
Thought this would be a nice but not for me, but her voice absolutely took me on a journey and was so enjoyable and real throughout.
What a phenomenal voice. Fun live album, even though I usually hate live albums it seems to make more sense for it's time.
so smooth, bit melancholy, utterly captivating. i think her voice is one of my faves from this big band era but for some reason [maybe everything else going on rn] i could not connect as thoroughly as i wanted to w/ this record. will be revisiting on my own time tbh
Witty live performance; transports you to the era and space in which it took place.
Classic jazz, and Vaughan has a phenomenal singing voice. A good selection of songs, including some old classics like "Willow Weep for Me". It's probably longer than most listeners may be comfortable with, but that just makes this even more impressive, because it was a live performance.
Jazz singer. Beautiful voice reminded me of Amy wine house
This is the realest, coolest live jazz album ever. It really subverts my expectations about live jazz from this era, but that made it way more memorable.
Great vibes. It’s like I’m there. Not usually my style but this is fantastic.
Must revisit
Sarah Vaughan By Popular Demand. Everyone with performance anxiety should listen to this. It’s the imperfections that make art loveable.
Love her voice and wit
Nice jazz album, great to work to. Only wish it was longer and not a live album. Will check out more of her recorded music!
Every jazz record in this collection seems to scream for more jazz records in this collection. Maybe Sassy oversings (or overemotes) onm a few songs but my is the voice a powerful thing of beauty.
Vocal Jazz, some of the live slip ups are funny (forgetting lyrics, imitating Ella)
Nice to hear live music in the way it used to be recorded. Soothing background music. Vocals were simple but effective.
Live albums are often hit or miss, but this live set from the amazing Sarah Vaughan is near perfection. An intimate live recording with Vaughan connecting with the audience right from the start and her magical performance makes this a worthwhile listen. I'm been graduating towards this genre of music for it's old-timey charm and it's classic performances and this album is a good place to start.
cool
Beautiful voice. I feel like she should be talked about more. Really good sounding jazz, all live
In general, I'm not a huge fan of music that focuses around a single vocalist, but having said that I love Sarah Vaughn's voice. She has great control and range. I especially enjoyed How High the Moon, where she declares in the second line that she doesn't know the words, and then scats beautifully through the rest of the song. Who needs lyrics when you're the queen? 4/5
