Reviews (page 7 of 13)

Very good album.

Delightful, truly delightful!

A welcome respite after the last few unpleasant albums… very enjoyable, beautiful voice, lovely standards. Was fun to hear the audience murmuring now and again.

Pretty good. Really nice voice

Great jazz album and Sarah Vaughan has an incredible voice. One of those albums where youre like "wait the popular version of that song was a cover?" Definitely worth a listen. 4/5

I have heard about Sarah Vaughan but I had never heard her. Now thanks to the challenge I have! I was expecting a singer in the lines of Nina Simone but I found a singer more in the lines of Ella Fitzgerald (whom she reference on How High The Moon). But Sarah is something quite on her own, with very versatile vocal skills and a real neat sense of humour. I spent quite some time with this album and, although not really my thing, it surely is a classic and a keeper.

I really enjoyed this album a ton, having never heard of her before. She has an incredible voice. I loved the slight outtakes that happened during a couple of the songs, her wit and sense of humor shone through. I will definitely be listening to this album again and checking out her other discography.

Had never heard this before! Initially thought it a little strange that a live album of jazz standards would make the cut for one of the best albums ever, but I really enjoyed this. It felt as if you were there at the venue in Chicago, listening to Sarah Vaughan sing. Thought it was cute that she forgot the words on a few songs, and she still sang with such command. Giving this a 4 because it was nice but it wasn’t show-stopping.

This is some of the most inoffensive music. Just some easy jazz amplified by non-intrusive vocals. I could listen to this forever, and would recommend the extended version of the album. As John Lennon said, "I like this kind of hot kind of music."

Have never really listened to much jazz, I liked more than I was expecting

Very entertaining, really captures the mood of the performance. Not my style but excellent nonetheless

Listened to this after getting up this morning. Wonderful and fun album to listen to. Sarah Vaughan has such a lovely voice.

Beautiful music, very soulful and relaxing!

Long but nice

I listened to the live record version Some vocalisations were a bit piercing-something to listen to in the background at Christmas

wicked voice.

Delightful.

Standout Track: Be Anything (But Be Mine)

Lovely album.

What a lovely voice! I thoroughly enjoyed the "live" aspect of this, especially when she forgets the lyrics and just rolls with it.

Very good

Love it!

The most gifted jazz vocalist of the era, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday ans Sarah Vaughan. Sooo goood. (7/10) FT: Willow Weep for Me, Be Anything (But Be Mine)

Good jazz sound

At first I felt out of my element with this mid-50’s jazz album, but I’d be lying if I didn’t have a smile on my face by the end of “How High the Moon”. -edit for future me: Apple Music only had half the album (acc. to Wikipedia track list), so this goes for tracks 1-9

Music to listen to with a cup of coffee.

Warm, inviting vocal jazz. Hard to dislike

Awesome live jazz album. Great voice.

Good jazz album to listen to Each song was similar but very different Would fit well in an old bar or for dancing A classic to educate - 6/10

This would be lovely to have on vinyl and play while sipping a cocktail by the fire and holding a pipe that makes bubbles etc etc

Plyta na zywca z gatunku wokalnego jazzu, wiec najczesciej hit lub miss czy akurat glos przypadnie do gustu, w wypadku pani Sarah Vaughan bedzie to zdecydowanie pierwsza opcja, at mister kellys wpisuje sie idealnie w potrzeby powrotu do rytmu listowego, przerwanego z powodu tridum, wiec plyta z 57 w lakonicznej formie trzydziestu paru minut, minimalistycznej oprawie muzycznej na ktora skladaja sie jedynie pianino kontrabas i drumy raczy sluchacza naturalnym zywym spiewem pani Vaughan, ktory pieknie koloruje standardy jazzowe na orginalne odcienie emocji, na ktorych gra ona po mistrzowsku, a nadal brzmi autentycznie i inaczej na kazdym kawalku, z plejkowych pickow dodam gigolakowego songa i stairway to the stsrs, dawno nie bylo tak dobrego materialu livowego, ktory dodatkowo bylby nagraniem jedynie coverowym

Listening to this album was a very pleasant experience. I loved the scatting on the last track. There was a lot to like here. Sarah Vaughan had a beautiful voice

That was a vibe

Refreshing

Super sweet :) I don’t have a whole lot of thoughts on this one, to be honest. I liked the music and I love how natural it felt. I have an affinity for that live feeling, especially when it’s as cozy as this album. Sarah Vaughan has a great charismatic charm and her adlibs are fun. I also LOVE her voice! In spite of all of this, I’m not head over heels about this album. The music, while pleasing to the ears, is not all that interesting to me. The best parts are when Vaughan breaks script and things break the fourth wall. I wish I had more to say about WHY the music wasn’t interesting to me but I wasn’t engaged enough to take notes. Good music to play in the background while chillin with people you love.

Great recording.

Chill and great

Nice, maybe a little repetitive, but overall I liked it a lot

A great voice and cool jazz songs are always good in my books. The live recording, with the announcement to the crowd and the mistakes all left in, adds this level of authenticity that made me enjoy it even more.

Fantastic album, Sarah Vaughn has a phenomenal voice

Nice listening, what a great singer!

Vocal jazz, beautiful voice, in the same line as Billie Holliday but more cheerful and playful.

Instant fan. You can really hear the influence of Ella Fitzgerand in Sarah's vocals (which gets directly referenced in How High the Moon). The accompanying band is so smooth.

Beautiful vocals, and the live setting makes it so much more intimate and atmospheric

A live album by one of the best voices to have ever existed with a truly professional band. The chosen songs are some of the more famous jazz songs, but not fully engaging throughout the album. Where they go a bit more uptempo, they band gets to showcase themselves a bit more.

This is a great Jazz/Swing-Album from an artist I previously knew nothing about. It's a live recording, too, but only runs about 35 minutes. Sarah Vaughan has a fantastic voice; and the way she saved "Willow Weep for me" after having forgotten some of the lines is truly elegant and funny at the same time. 4/5

Niesamowity głos, kolejny, po B.B. Kingu, świetny live performance

Classy , easy, smooth vibe. Liked this.

My grandmother and I concur, Sarah Vaughan is a classy delight.

Lovely - what a discovery and what a great live album

This album is awesome! So endearing that she's not perfect, she makes mistakes, etc., yet just rolls with it!

3.5/5. This was alright, I would say average. I liked the live aspect of it. Jazz is always good.

i think this unlocked a secret memory from my grandfather. personally i liked hearing the audience, sets a mood i really enjoyed.

might be the best jazz voice i've ever heard

really nice live performance 8/10

8/10. Pretty good vocal jazz, great to be on in the background.

Would put on in the background during a dinner party. 8/10

I loved hearing this live album. The mixup during Willow Weep for Me was lovely to hear. Excellent song choice, and a stellar backing band. Lovely.

Another live album, which is fine. Unfamiliar with Sarah Vaughan. A jazz standard singer with a beautiful voice. Great quality live album for being recorded in '57.

Very sweet, a great listen for the holiday season!

La voce colpisce subito, fin dalle prime note di 'September in the Rain'.

reminds of norah jones

This is good jazz with a good voice. It doesn't even sound live. Yeah, this is solid.

Someone else described this album as the warmest blanket on the coldest day, and I really felt that

Ms Sarah Vaughan sings songs from the great American song book. Utterly captivating voice, terrific jazz band backing.

Great album to listen to . Her voice is amazing.

Nice wee live set

That was fantastic and intimate in all the ways that the best jazz joints are.

Nice voice!

Sehr schönes Jazz-Album! Trifft eher meine Hörgewohnheiten :)

great vocal jazz, and a great backing band to boot

Me gusto, 4/5

Beautiful voice here. Nice collection of standards performed pretty much perfectly. Not really a fan personally of this kind of thing even though it's easy to admire the talent. Also I don't generally like live albums. I think the Spotify version linked here is only half of the album. Full album is here: spotify:album:4HXhOHapnfYAFUuQqBWQ3L Kinda messed up of the emcee to call her out for performing with lyric sheets...

I thought the set list had a good flow, I've rarely heard scat that's legit. Some great love songs. A nice time capsule.

Didn't finish, but very easy listening and beautifully aranged

Love the intro. This type of music always brings back Fallout 3 memories, really nice. The improv jokes etc on Willow Weep for Me and How High the Moon are brilliant, gives a really strong sense of the atmosphere and the confidence she had as a performer. Overall really enjoyed it.

Smooth, dinner music. Late night perhaps

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Just one of those things, Stairway to the stars

Nice and beautiful voice Songs were a little less 7/10

Precioso. Te sentís adentro del bar tomándote algo y escuchando esa belleza. La voz ella es tremenda. Los graves me fascinan. Willow Weep For Me, Honeysuckle Rose, Just a Gigolo y How High The Moon me parece los mejores temas del disco.

What a voice! And what a performance!

AND IT'S LIVE! I actually think it's pretty cool. Mister Kelly is a bit of a nonce though.

What a voice!

Beautiful voice, not really my style of music but her talent is amazing.

Espectacular voz. Bohemio e inspirador.

jazz! voice! smoky club vibes.

her voice is smooth like honey and the album as a whole has a serene peacefullness over it

Loved the second track. Sarah Vaughan's vocals exposed all the flaws in modern R&B vocals.

Grappig want tis live Mooi gezongen Veel scatting Jaaazzzz

Fav song: September In The Rain

Probably good just not my thing

Nice, chill, relaxing. Jazzy. Sassy.

Musikalisches Glas Milch mit Honig.

Might relisten, 7/10

Hints of Ella Fitzgerald, here. She bangs into the mic on Willow Weep For Me and then messes up the lyrics, but it's a live show so they keep rolling. I'm not a fan of many of the songs chosen, as the lyricsl content is dubious and they are chordally monotonous, but the voice is the star - she sings like she is playing an instrument and the dynamics are spectacular

Pleasant enough.

6+ / 10

Nice little jazzy listen. Id enjoy again with a bourbon and dim lighting

This is a cool album.

My immediate reaction to the album art: this is going to be corny & white. But, 1957, not white. Let's see.

A little too "female soft jazz vocals" for my taste

very beautiful sarah thank you for blessing my ears

Personally, I don't think Live Albums should be on this list, but this one sounded nice.

What a gorgeous voice; rich and warm. And a wonderfully intimate recording. Not my usual area but enjoyed the listen.

Kinda cool the live jazz, but

Gorgeous voice from a different era.

As a casual observer/admirer of jazz, I was a little disappointed by this one. I was hoping for gold, but found pyrite. Her voice has a nice quality to it on the longer, sustained notes, but the songs leave no lasting impression. Everything is right on the surface.

This is Sarah Vaughn recording in front of a live audience, supported by a piano trio. She performing a set of standards that probably were the center of a lot of her shows. There are a couple flubs, but they're charming rather than distracting. There's nothing particularly surprising about this record, but its a good performance on the part of everyone. I have to admit the performance of "Just A Gigolo' drags a bit. I'd probably pick this up for a reasonable price.

A very nice and respectable performance. Be Anything But Darling Be Mine and How High The Moon, wrre my favorites; you can tell she's smiling through the recording lol. 6.9/10

Very nice live atmosphere

6.0/10

I'm not really familiar with Sarah Vaughan's albums, or really the whole genre of jazz singers, but even in my ignorance I can tell she has an amazing voice, and I'm equally impressed by her band's talents as well as the incredibly clear recording quality for a live album from 1957 (even down to the occasional blips (audible and lyrical) in tracks "Willow weep for me"). I enjoyed the album, and appreciated getting to hear one of the greats of yesteryear, although not quite enough to seek out the 1991 reissue with twice as many songs from her weeklong stay at Mister Kelly's).

Enjoyed the album but it felt like her voice was straining at times.

It’s a testament to the voice of the artist and their talent behind any instrument if they can take “Just a Gigolo,” and turn it to a reflective somber tune of love and time. Give it 28 years later, David Lee Roth will be bouncing around the stage like a goofball to that tune. For now, At Mister Kelly’s, we’ll listen with Sarah’s calmness.

A nice little jazz vocal live album. I can hear how this (and others like it) might've been influential to artists such as Amy Winehouse or Esperanza Spalding. Very strange decision for Vaughan to comment during her vocal performance (in at least two tracks that I noticed) that she doesn't know the words to these songs. Good performance. I don't really need to listen to it again. 3/5

Hard to find too much wrong with this exactly but probably just in the category of "nice dinner music" for me? Her voice is really nice, the band just sort of seems like they want to do pretty minimal background jazz and stay out of her way. Definitely has a vibe, could be nice in the right moments, but maybe a little too innocuous overall to be something I'd listen to a lot.

I liked it. It was fun that the blunders (forgotten lyrics and audio from knocked over things) were left in. I like that her voice sounds “happy”.

This list contains so much smaller part of women voices and this one was so melodic and soothing.

Fun little jazz album. I thought the lyrical interpretation of How High the Moon was really funny.

Was fun, but if I get another jazz album back to back... omg! Her vocals were flawless, the few slip ups were cute, love to hear more from the Chicago jazz scene.

First venture into Sarah Vaughan, really reminiscent of what Raye is currently doing which I love. I just couldn't get the distinction between some songs

I like jazz singers, but I wasn't sure I would like this one because of her vibrato at the start, but she quickly found her groove and put a lot of heart into her songs, and friendly humor into the interludes (and some songs!). It's these, what would otherwise be outtakes in a studio, that gives the recording character. An exquisite singer among the top of her peers.

Project 1001 ABID #4 Pre thoughts - started of with Myles Davis so makes sense that jazz related stuff is gonna feature heavily in the top 1001. Some people respect whiskey they've just never tried it. This is me with jazz. Seeing as Sarah is a singer, i think its going to be much easier for my to digest than the Myles record so I'm very much looking forward to it. Post thoughts- certainly a beautiful album and Sarah is so good. Just would need a few relistens to pick a favourite song

3 1/2 stars Great voice. Mostly piano accompaniment. Sometimes light snare. Good song: How high is the moon. Album is repetitious. No variety. Album of my parents’ generation.

RATING: 7/10 HIGHLIGHT: Honeysuckle Rose LOWLIGHT: Just One of Those Things

I was bored. Cool concept, but jazz has never interested me.

Great singer, pretty boring show though. She has solid stage presence, but that isn't really what the album is for. For most of it, it doesn't even sound live. It showcases an amazing singer, so it's not a completely pointless album.

Would I listen again: yes It was pleasant and jazzy. Reminds me of christmas because her voice is just like Ella Fitzgerald and that makes me think of frosty the snowman

Always love these slice-of-life experiences, and always love Sarah Vaughan. Quality record.

SV at some random Chicago jazz club - hell yeah September in the rain

Definitely pleasant to listen to but not something that will blow you away 5/10 Favourite: Be Anything But Darling Be Mine Least Favourite: Willow Weep For Me

short n' sweet album, none of the songs really stood out to me but they felt different enough from each other, which i appreciate. i liked it well enough, but it's not the type of jazz i'd relisten to, if that makes sense. the album being a live performance is cute though

She's got the pipes. I think my mom would like this!

I'm normally not a huge fan of live albums but the vibe of this one it's really nice. Very well performed especially the piano. Sarah Vaughan has a beautiful voice and some of the tracks are really good. Unfortunately this is the type of Jazz I find the hardest to get into so it's got a ceiling for me. Top tracks: Stairway To The Stars, Honeysuckle Rose, How High The Moon

great voice, great instrumental accompaniment, overall though im just like that was neat.

While I don't like jazz I DO love when a woman can fucken SANG

Not usually a fan of jazz but I liked this! Was a pleasant listen and Sarah vaughan seems fun!

A live album that isn’t completely marred by being a live album. If anything it adds some character hearing the banter and mistakes. The singing style is nice but does get a bit tiring after 20 songs. Same with the subject matter of the songs being pretty much the same thing over and over. 6/10

Gorgeous singing. I don't know enough to understand if the live albums are better than the studio ones. Vaughan is not my favorite singer but I can appreciate how good she is.

Really ambient and vibing, proper jazz bar music. Wouldnt listen in any other context though

I enjoy live albums from around this time but I just wish the audience here had a little more energy. I’m happy they’re being respectful but I do enjoy a little hooting and/or a hollering in my live albums. The first and last tracks both had the funny moments of improvisation (errors) that make a live album worth listening to.

Nice little jazz album from a masterful singer. I really like the live production values. It is as close as I've ever been to sitting in a jazz cafe and enjoying a night under low lights. Truly transportive.

Varma pussitus kolkkiviivan takaa.

Easy to have on in the background.

Jazz/Lounge singer from ‘57. Vocals are strong, just not my thing.

Vaughn has an absolutely gorgeous voice. Not really my jam, but I did find it very soothing and pleasant as I drove with this album in the background.

I mean...it's good. Her voice is great. The vibes are strong. But - and I know I know nothing - it all sounded the same to me.

There’s better jazz albums, but that recording quality is unreal for 1957

It was ok. She has a wonderful voice and I like the big band in small doses.

2026.05.09

Kul lyssning! Härlig jazz. Enkel, len.

Nice and jazzy live album, Sarah Vaughn has a lovely voice. It seems like she has a good sense of humour as well.

Another jazz album and more confirmation I don't really like jazz. This is fine, but if I'd walked into this performance I'd think it was perfectly pleasant background music

Very pleasant, I love jazz

Great voice just subpar recording

Ok what is this. Intro. Wow imagine being at this show it would be so cool. Solid jazz I like it. Not much to say outside of that. Favourite: September In The Rain Least favourite: all solid tracks

Very ambivalent. It's not a bad album. Didn't hate it, didn't care for it. It's fine for what it is, and I'm sure some people like it. I find it very difficult to have an opinion on it. She has a lovely voice but I'm completely indifferent.

Something I can picture putting on in the background on my awesome vintage vinyl player......when i am rich enough to have one

Insane voice, wonderful recording. Feels like you're a member of the crowd, reacting to Sarah's hiccups and ad libs. Maybe a bit too long and repetitive.

not bad. but i wouldn’t choose to listen to it myself

Sarah Vaughan just serenaded me through the grad problem on nonlinear

Makes me want to curl up on a couch with a blanket and a cup of hot chocolate as the rain lightly lands against the screen door to my right, a cat lovingly curled up next to me sound asleep and lightly purring as I am reminded auditorily of the sweeter and softer parts of life, my heart rate slowly and steadily lowering throughout the course of record with Vaughan's voice lulling me into a safer place somewhere outside my normal reach where I can just be okay, a hard thing to be at times

I vaguely feel like I've heard the name Sarah Vaughn but don't remember why and don't know any songs by her. Thoughts after listening 3 times ... She has a great voice for sure - seems like a really broad range. This music is definitely far off from my usual stuff but I ended up liking 4 songs - "September In The Rain", "Be Anything But Darling Be Mine", "Thou Swell", "Honeysuckle Rose". Extra credit for "Thou Swell" using the word "lollapaloosa" - apparently that's an old word that according to Webster's dictionary means "one that is extraordinarily impressive, also : an outstanding example". I always thought the festival name Lollapalooza was just a word made up by Perry Farrell or something. Now I know. Funny - I got assigned this on a rainy, chilly Sunday and the mood of this seems to match a day like this. Even though this is recorded live - I sometimes forgot I was listening to a live album - at least during the performances. Of course I can tell it's live when there is clapping at the end. It seems like it was recorded very well. I'm glad I got a chance to listen to this. It's good to stretch beyond my comfort zone. Maybe, when these pop up on my playlists, I'll start getting more used to this type of music. Liked songs on Spotify: 4/9 Rating: 3/5

It’s a nice jazz album but didn’t sound that great

Fun, It.. ok

1957. De locos. Ella canta impecable. Transmite un montón. Y la banda un lujo. Hermoso registro en vivo. 6/10

Good jazz vocals, not very memorable songs

Live albums often don’t quite do it for me. Love live music, but prefer my headphone music to be recorded. Slightly more crooner-y than my taste. Not bad but not my fav.

This was fine but not very memorable. Was more background musi for me and probably won’t come back to it.

Fun and authentic, not my go to genre but enjoyable for what it is

Just a little bit boring for me

I liked her improv for the songs she didn't fully know or just to fill time.

I think every live album or even every concert should start with someone imploring the crowd to be normal

This was nice and relaxing. Sarah Vaughan is obviously terrific but I also just feel a little meh about it. Great album cover though.

This is one of those albums where you get exactly what you expect, no more, no less. It's a little over thirty minutes of smooth vocal jazz. The live setting provides a bit of improvisation; I love when Vaughn admits she messed up on the second track but keeps going anyway, or riffs on Billie Holliday on the closer. I wish there were more of those moments though, as the songs are played straight and are often indistinguishable from studio renditions. The instruments are quiet, to the point where you can forget about them and just listen to Vaughn's voice. But what a voice it is! Even when she's just singing standards straight it's lovely. But to be truly great, this needed something to add a little zest to these songs.

Listening session: april 20th, while getting ready in the morning Listened to before: no Thoughts: Sarah Vaughan has a great voice and this type of music is nice to listen to (especially on the background), but it doesn’t stand out to me in any way Favourite tracks: September In The Rain & Be Anything But Darling Be Mine

I mean, it’s ok. Would’ve been better if the vocal hadn’t been so much forward masking the instruments.

No flaws here... but I can't help but think that the recorded version doesn't even come close to capturing half of what it would be like to be in the intimate setting of that show. Albums always transport the music through time, but some simply don't give you that immersion. 3 stars

I am not a huge fan of Jazz, but her vocals kept me listening. This woman can sing!

She has incredible control over her voice and the vibratos and clarity of her voice is impressive. Obviously very talented. I think hearing a live album of her may be better than a recording to really emphasize her talent. Glad I listened to this, I enjoyed it.

3 stars This was perfectly pleasant, light fun. I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen again, but I’d certainly come back to this over many this on this list.

some good, some just okayish

p40. 1958. 3 stars. Late 50s live jazz album. Great voice, but I don't like jazz, and I am not a fan of live recordings. Worth a listen but won't revisit.

Good album. Knew nothing about the artist before I listened. Probably can get the kids to listen to this more than Holiday.

Not my go-to genre, but was a solid easy to listen to album.

Great just not one I would have a reason to repeat.

Amazing voice. All the audience interactions add something unique to this album.

Dejligt

Gode vibes!

Hun synger sgu meget godt fru Vaughan.

3 - The intro before the show really amused me for some reason. I enjoyed this decently.

Not super into this form of jazz but the general vibe of the live audience was great. Amazing voice

Love these live jazzy albums so much though this one starts to fall off at the end for me. No standout songs but the ambiance is set well.

It’s not my sort of thing but it’s very good. What a voice

Sarah Vaughan's voice is amazing, the live recording is perfect, and the vibe is great. There is nothing wrong with this album, but I'm only giving this a 3 because I just really gotta be in the mood to listen to jazz standards. Surely if I were around back then, in a smokey bar with a drink in my hand, sitting at a table next to a dapper fellow, it would be a phenomenal experience to see this live.

3.5 She has a great voice, enjoyed the adlibbing on the last track

Live at Mister Kelly’s

Fine for a live jazz album but not sure why this is seminal. Forgetting the lyrics once is cute but twice is annoying.

Really enjoyed this - the recording made me feel like I was there in the quiet, intimate club.

The live version was fun!

Charming little album. I usually find live albums difficult to listen to but this was sweet. Not my usual cup of tea and I probably wouldn’t listen again but definitely interesting and quite funny at times.

September In the Rain - 4/5 Willow Weep For Me - 3.5/5 Just One Of Those Things - 4/5 Be Anything But Darling Be Mine - 3/5 Thou Swell - 3/5 Stairway To The Stars - 3/5 Honeysuckle Rose - 3.5/5 Just A Gigolo - 3/5 How High The Moon - 3.5/5

it was vibey and I didn't hate it but it was kind of one note. I did really like the little fuckups and background noises that happened. It felt very grounded because of that.

While her voice was very charming and it was definitely a fun album, it often felt very one note.

nice. not crazy about her scatting. 3.5

She has a beautiful voice, but this just isn't my type of music.

Smooth

one of the most atmospheric vintage jazzy live albums I've heard.

I was not too familiar with Ms. Vaughn, so it was a treat to hear this. Live albums, with some exceptions, are a struggle for me to rate high, and this one is a fine illustration why, with the glitches, oopses and crowd noise. All this said, Ms. Vaughn's voice is incredible. I'll definitely be seeking out studio recordings after this.

Sarah Vaughanil on super hääl. Ma isegi ei tundnud ära "Just A Gigolo", kuniks ma nägin loo pealkirja (ma ju ei kuula sõnu). 3.1/5

such a sweet voice!!

A neat performance of what I assume must've been alot of the popular standards of the 50s. Unfortunately time has not treated the material well and, while played and sung well (Vaughan does have a great singing voice!), it doesn't wow me in any particular way. 7/10.

Pretty great vocals and live sounds, doesn't work for me as an album as well as it does a live set though

Parlour music

Surprising quality of vocal Fidelity from a 1957 recording. Not exactly my style of music for direct listening but very nice background music depending on the atmosphere of the room.

Some good old jazz music. I like it.

Good live performance.

Perfect album to listen while sipping coffee on a rainy day. One thing that was not for me was the fact that recording of Vaughan's voice was too loud compared to the instruments. However it's a classic, was a pleasure to listen.

Beautiful voice having fun. Love her voice. It's a little more clean like Ella here somehow. It is a little bit high in the mix - I'd love to feel the atmosphere of the band a little more. I'm not sure about the goofing around bits. Her voice is really incredible though and I love the choice of standards here

Zone out a bit. A live recording. Interesting

Willow Weep for Me Stairway to the Stars Honeysuckle Rose

September in the Rain Willow Weep For Me How High the Moon

Even though this is a live album, it sounds so polished. I liked the casual vibe it has, too. Sarah Vaughan has a wonderful voice that meshes well with the jazz music. A smooth, easy listen.

decent

One of the coolest voices I’ve ever heard, but it wasn’t my favorite live album we’ve heard. Regular score: 3 Do I wish I was there in the audience score: 4

Great voice, but live jazz albums are tough for me. It's like a sports game. So much better actually being there. Hope to hear more from her. Fantastic artist.

257/1001 Sarah Vaughan - Sarah Vaughan at Mister Kelly's Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ She has an incredible voice and the arrangements are nice enough, but it's very easy listening and ended up being background music.

album #11 A beautifully smooth and playful live album! Sarah Vaughn's voice is incredible and her ability to improvise in a fun way really endears this album to me. I disliked "be anything but darling be mine" but I do prefer it to the original. 3.5/5 because the live recording interactions made me giggle. favourite track(s): willow weep for me, how high the moon least favourite track(s): be anything but darling be mine number of albums left to review: 1,078 number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 5 albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 1 albums from the list I won't include on my list: 10

Surprisingly great album. I've never heard of Sarah Vaughan before but what a voice

Absolutely in love with Sarah Vaughan's voice. Favorite Track: September in the Rain

I feel like I've been getting a lot of albums lately that I just don't have a ton to say about and this one's no different. Sarah Vaughan At Mister Kelly's is a nice enough 50s vocal jazz album and that's about it. There's nothing wrong with that, obviously, but it also means there's not much interesting that I can comment on. The recording quality is good. Sarah's singing is pretty nice. She's got some good vibrato. There aren't a ton of "live-album-isms" on here at first glance, but there's one big thing that's pretty limiting here that I assume was the case because of this being a live performance. The instrumentation is quite sparse. As far as I can tell, the only performers here are Sarah Vaughan herself, a bassist, a pianist, and a drummer. A lot of studio albums I've heard that are also in this vocal jazz sphere have much more lush instrumentation to them, so to hear the more subdued energy is definitely different. The album's a little repetitive and kinda basic, but I certainly can't call it bad in any capacity. It's quite nice actually, though not something that I derive that great of a pleasure in. It's enjoyable and fairly relaxing, but it's also just kinda there. It's nice. High 3/5.

Very strong vocal talent and it’s pretty smooth jazz if you’re into that. A bit repetitive sounding

Vocal jazz/lounge music is not something I would normally choose to listen to but Sarah Vaughan's voice and style were outstanding. This was a nice listen.

Fantastic singer. I loved the ad libs and the improvisation. Really made the album special. As a whole, I was pretty lukewarm to it. Not bad.

3.5, uma boa performance de vocal jazz, a seleção de músicas é legal mas nada muito fora do usual destaques: september in the rain e honeysuckle rose

Really nice live jazz record with intentionally-included hiccups for effect. Would I listen again? Probably not.

Fun album. Jazzy.

Jazz is not in my wheelhouse. I am not qualified to judge Jazz albums. The vocals are great and overall the album sounded smooth. That's all I can say.

Oh to be at mister Kelly’s in 1958 listening to Sarah Vaughan’s soothing voice play jazz while I drink a whiskey sour for 50 cents

Cosy, easy listening

Easy enough listening. It would probably kick ass if I was in a giant leather chair several whiskies deep with a cigar in hand.

A fun and occasionally funny selection of big band style jazz standards. Sarah's voice is stellar throughout. I wish the band was a little louder in the mix.

Finally a Jazz album on this list after about a month. One I’m not familiar with. This is all fine. Simple backing jazz band with some nice vocals. Nothing is overly wowing me but it is a very nice listen. Her voice is great and really elevates some of these songs. I imagine this would be great to be in the room listening to. I thought it was starting to get a little tiring, but then realized I was already near the end of the album. It’s all very fun though. Especially the last song, which ends it on a fun high note. She seems to be having a great time singing these songs. Can hear it in her voice. I’ll give this a 3.

Singing the phonebook, the album. Listen, when I saw the year 2000 on Spotify and I heard the introduction/opening strains of this, my eyes rolled back into my head to the point where a priest was called to my residence. After the entity possessing me figured out that this was old and not a white poetry slam mom in a fedora, we both breathed a supply of relief. I thought the lyric botches made this record. She literally sang about not knowing the words. That's fantastic. This seems like the label made her make this record at gunpoint, and even with the lyric sheet mentioned at the start, she just fucks the laberl over and it was released anyway. Fantastic. That made this whole record. Otherwise, we've got a very run of the mill torch singer extravaganza. Almost as common as Britpop! Or me mentioning that genre in my reviews. 2.5-3 HIGHLIGHTS: Willow Weep for Me, Be Anything But Darling Be Mine

Very good live recording of her songs. Immensely talented but how high the moon was just a riff and it really took me out

Easy and Smooth. Good music to have on around the house. Liked the intro at the beginning, great voice. Highlight: September in the Rain From Musicboard (OG 1/18/26 [#28] 2/26/26)

for a rainty fall evening

It's cosy and crackly, and Sarah has an undeniably brilliant voice for jazz. Despite not being the biggest fan of this style of music, it was definitely an experience that I don't regret having.

My husband calls me a ham and cheese sandwich, but at times this album was even too sappy/cheesy for me. I loved her voice and some of the lyrics, but the scatting got to be a bit much for me too. I was very back and forth with this one.

sound like jazz - some ok - some not so ok. learned about gigalo from this album

Lively improv.

i didn't really like the vocal inflections or whatever the constant up-down sound she was making is called that the singer kept doing, but that's a small nitpick. felt like listening to fallout / bioshock music, which is fine. 6/10

Fantastic voice.

Nett. Beeindruckende Aufnahmetechnik

I feel like I'd always seen people putting Vaughan on par with singers like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, but for some reason I'd never really ever heard of anything major she did? Unfortunately my jazz blind spot remains a massive one here; she's a good singer but I don't really understand what makes her great? I liked the part early on where it sounds like she messed something up and improvised around it though, that was fun!

Great voice. Had never heard of her tbh. Im not a big fan of almost ofvthe actudl music. Not really my thing But stupendous vocals.

The cartoonish vibrato ever so slightly undermines the sophisticated cool of the performance

Good for Live, but worst than Dinah Washigton, sorry)

Perus jazzilevy, taustamusana toimi aivan hyvin, tuskin tulee normaaliin kuunteluun.
