Reviews (page 8 of 8)
Good Times is a classic I love. Rest is okay and every song goes on 3-4 mins longer than needed… same beat over and over
Makes your foot tap but ultimately the base of each song sound very similar to each other.
It was ok but it was annoying to me
Boring.
"Good Times", great, disco classic and all of that. Rest of the album... not so good times.
Apparently this is a highly influential album, but there was a lot better disco than this.
I liked a few of the tracks
“Good Times” is an all time banger. Everything else here is not essential in the slightest.
I'm not a fan of Disco, but - I suppose - there should be one or two albums representing the genre on this list. I'm still not sure what makes it special. I do like the bass lines and it seems to be well-produced.
Well.. it sure is disco. Can't deny that. The songs are too long for their own good. It gets really samey near the end.
Very good disco album and what a way to open up but outside of that nothing very inspiring.
Can't stand Chic for some reason. It's not like it's offensive to the ears. Maybe it's the fact that everything is so overtly trying to be a disco anthem (which again, is their remit) Just not for me.
2.9 - This album is smooth as an all-inclusive vacation but about as exciting. Terrific production and musicianship but I can't get into disco. "Can't Stand To Love You" is the one jam I might come back to.
At least it has a sense of fun, unlike a lot of the dreck on this list
Another one for the long list of one single filler albums. Maybe it's a time and place album, but I was in neither I should try it again after a few beers.
One banger, lots of meh - not that interesting to hear disco as an album
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: My Forbidden Lover, Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song) Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: I don't hate disco at all but I was not really moved by this. Sorry to say but Good Times got mogged by Rapper's Delight
This album would be a lot more fun if the songs were all about 2 1/2 minutes long. So repetitive. But such fun melodies too!
Chite
Good Times is a frigging good time, obviously. It's the only memorable bop on the album though. Long live disco and all, this just didn't do it for me.
Good times, then slow times, then kinda meh times.
Risqué by Chic (1979) This disco album is yawningly simple in composition, but supremely danceable, which, I suppose, is the whole point of disco. I don’t think that when it was produced anyone thought it would be given a serious listen forty-plus years later. But here we are, so we dutifully note its excellent qualities within the genre: it is clean and bright, with top-notch (for the time) production values, predictable arrangements and technically correct instrumental performances, including schmaltzy, poorly intoned violins telling me what to do with my feelings, very nice drums telling me what to do with my feet, and groovy electric bass telling me what to do with my butt. This record didn’t make me want to dance, but if I had to dance, this music would be adequate to the purpose. Hence, I suppose that if someone held a gun to my head and demanded that I absolutely had to have one disco album in my collection, this one would do, although “C’est Chic” by Chic (1978) is beaucoup mieux. 2/5
Other than good times this didn’t have a ton of value for me.
Good times is obviously a classic but otherwise a bit boring for my tastes
I started this album, went to make a sandwich, ate the sandwich, and this song was still on. Good times. But otherwise, the other songs don't live up.
I thought I would find some place for this in the fond nostalgia of disco... but given that disco is already repetitive, why would i want 8.5 minutes of a disco song. Even their best song tires way before we get to the end.
Back in high school, I attended a concert that featured the smashing of disco records during the height of the disco's popularity in the late 70's. The local rock radio station sponsored the event, which in turn was giving advertising hype for one of their DJ's band that had a "hit" on the station called, Disco's In the Garbage. Us, impressionable teenagers cheered on the spectacle believing our Cheap Trick, Van Halen, Boston, Foreigner tastes were far superior to any disco music because...disco sucks! Embarrassingly looking back and listening with fresh ears now, disco still does suck, but not as much. I understand the appeal and it is very danceable, not doubt, but I can't dance and the music on it's own is just a slicker soul/funk. I'll give this album a couple of stars mainly because this is a more authentic experience than say...the Bee Gees, Andy Gibb or anyone on the Saturday Night Fever album.
I'm not into disco.
The second song made me cringe so hard.
First song’s a classic, the rest are a class I did not enjoy it had to take in order to graduate.
I just can’t get excited about disco
They saved the best for first. Nile Rogers plays some mean guitar licks and Bernard Edwards also lays down some great bass tracks on the first song - Good Times. I must admit that this is a pretty iconic disco anthem. But after this it just got hella repetitive, like very very very repetitive.
Good voices and instrumentation can't overcome the fact that this album is more disco than soul or funk. As a result, it only gets 2 stars from me. If you like disco with a good groove, you'll like this album.
1.5
80' hygge/danse musik
Listenable. Not my genre. Cool influential instrumentals but overall kind of repetitive. 2.5.
Alright
Did not enjoy this as much as I thought I would.
It was ok, disco isn’t my favorite and this album is mostly that. Some funk and soul flavor saved it from 1 star.
I'm not a huge fan of disco/pop so it's difficult to give a truly unbiased review of this record. I will say that the opening track is infectious and has a class use of random distortion in the opening second to contrast with the tight beats and harmonies that come after in the first song. One to listen to for some of the pioneers of disco.
In 1979 I might have enjoyed this ! It's very samey and very very repetitive !!!
Every song was way too long
Ambivalent
The thing with disco is there isn't really a reason to listen to it any more. This music is for romancing a woman with an afro, on a circular suede couch and orange shag carpet. A silk dress shirt open to the 4th button and tight flared pants. This is the music equivalent of salmon mousse, we have moved on since the seventies, we have EDM now, we don't need this cheese any more
It was okay, wasn't totally in a disco mood but it's a vibe for sure.
I don’t like disco at all, but I’ll admit there is a groove here and there that I liked
It was ok
First track was great. Then is kinda yacht rocked off a little for my liking
This is disco music. Be ready to dance.
Not my kind of music
First song is classic, but the rest aren't really my cup of tea. Probably just a 2/5.
Nothing like a woman whispering "Te quiero papí". My reaction to track 1 was "oh, so that's who wrote this song". Not a huge disco fan myself, but this was certainly palatable. I can see Guillaume fucking to this for sure.
I'm really not a big fan of disco. It wasn't bad, like I could groove to this, but I'm just not really feeling it
Some good bops.
Meh. There are lots of albums that have that _one_song_. This is one of those. This was released late late in the disco 'era' and it seems that disco had already run it's course.
Not bad.
Not nearly as good as the other Chic album. Mostly grooves, but not really songs.
Chic are great. This is another album that gets repetitive quickly though. It's all very Chic, all the way through, with no surprises . I didn't dislike it, I didn't really need to sit and listen to the whole thing though. Good Times is an obvious highlight here, the other tracks not quite living up to that opening track promise.
Catchy disco. Meh.
Not as bad as I thought it would be, but nonetheless very, very repetitive. I suppose if you've got a bad case of Saturday night fever, you've just done some lines of coke in the bathroom, and you just want something steady that you can go all night to, then this would do the job. However, I don't think I will ever find myself in such a situation. Best song: Can't Stand to Love You, because it didn't wear out its welcome.
meh - I like Good Times
Disco and funk built from impeccably tight rhythm guitar, elastic bass lines, polished grooves, and smooth vocals feels like spending an evening at a boring yet exclusive party where everything is perfectly arranged but few conversations stay with you more than a few Moments — effortlessly stylish and emotionally without any weight.
God this is awful. Repetitive as hell. I don't understand why there are two Chic albums (I hope there's only two) on this list. One was more than enough.
3/10
Once again, I just don't think this is very good. It's pretty lame. It's not "Risque". Leave it in the past.
Ummm. No. Don't like the genre, and found most of this album to be irritating.
For the past few years my family, neighbourhood and just about anyone you speak with have gone mad for Nile Rodgers and Chic’s appearance at Halifax Piece Hall. They claim I must come and have the best night of my life. In truth I would rather go for an internal anal examination than subject myself to that. Bit extreme comparison I know but this sort of music is likely to be heard in a waiting room for and during a colonic irrigation procedure. OK Mr Rodgers is a noted producer and musician and judging by my own experiences alone must have a vast following. But please keep him and the likes of this album well away from me and if I am unfortunate enough to have the aforementioned procedures a Brian Eno album is more likely to relax the relevant orifice than this tripe. 1/5 6/2/26
Every song is at least twice as long as it needs to be. I'd put this down as meh, disco isn't for me but this was enough of a nothingburger to put me off disco.
Chic?. No ceech!
Very repetitive. "Good Times" is okay, but pretty standard disco.
Hyllad av många, men inte av mig.
The most boring repetitive album I have ever had the displeasure to listen to.
Thankfully short record. But the songs are so long and there is no real definition during them. It's ready to just say disco sucks. And it does. But this record wouldn't be good anyway. Nothing really happens in most of these tracks.
Wow I thought it was just a bad dream but no it’s true there was a disco phase. I didn’t realize we would have to suffer through any of it on this list but apparently I was wrong again. Really terrible lame ass “music”.
Repetitious and lacking imagination.
It's telling when your best know for being the riff sampled for another group's chart topping hit. Otherwise I liked the disco beat, though it got really repetitive after about 2 songs.
One of the most boring and repetitive albums I’ve come across in this list. Probably a great album if you’re high as a kite and having sex with bikini models at a pool party. But since that never happens to me, I’ll pass.
I've said it before about CHIC and Sister Sledge, and I'll say it again. Objectively yes, this is a good album. A great album in fact. But for some goddamn reason, I just can't stand disco from the 70s. I have tried, I really have, and no matter what this kind of music just annoys me so much.
Soulless disco and corporate funk.
Of all the other albums that came out in 1979 - I get this horrid listen?!? Not even much disco but banal R&B. Hard pass.
Couldn't finish any. Just don't like disco.
Repetitive, repetitive, repetitive.
Garbage.
Oh come on, there's two CHIC albums on here???! And this one sounds exactly like all the other songs on the other album??! It's just the Le Freak beat going on for way too long every song. Get the fuck out of here this shit sucks
I don't like this song because the beat is not that good i would not recommend this song I don't like this song because it's too sad I would not recommend this song
I don't like this song because I don't really like disco music and I'dont like the beat. I don't like the second one because it is to slow and it is boring I do not recommend this album
This album opens with the iconic “Good Times,” which is 5 minutes too long for my liking, despite its importance in musical history. “Can’t Stand to Love You” was probably my favorite track on this album-it’s the funkiest. Still, I couldn’t get through it-it’s too disco for me. Learning about this band and its influence and later works by various members was fascinating though!
I felt nothing at all while listening to this. It's the musical equivalent to canvas wall art in an office complex.
The Good: We start our listening experience off by being told we will have a “Good Time”… The Bad: The Good Time, so it seems never ends… The Ugly: Maybe we are being fooled; it is not about my good time, but about other people’s good, and be damned my good time! Undeniable that Good Time is a classic disco song… Undeniable that CHIC knows how to stick to a beat / rhythm / concept Undeniable that, as with the other damn album by CHIC on the 1001 list, I got bored, nay, BORED real fast. While I gave the other album 2* as I was acknowledging the musicianship on the album, this time around I am going to dish out a solid 1* Thank goodness disco died a quick death!
Yeah, I don’t think I was able to get through any of the songs without skipping ahead. It’s disco, its fine, but it’s so repetitive, sonically and lyrically I get bored.
1. good timez - 1 2. night - 1 3. dancing - 0 4. lover - 0 5. ztand - 0 6. cry - 1 7. me - 0
Meh. Too disco-y
Risqueis an album that captures the essence of funk and disco but despite this achievement falls short in several areas. The songs tend to be quite long, which can make them feel drawn-out and monotonous. I struggled to connect with the vocals, as they lack the emotional depth, I usually seek. However, I can understand why some of the tracks are sampled; the instrumental snippets are exceptionally tight and well-crafted. The musicianship is evident, and the rhythm sections are solid. Yet, despite the technical proficiency, the overall listening experience feels a bit dull and uninspired. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 0 STAND OUT TRACK - None
Good times… that song is just too damn long, and for me, it’s the best song on the album. Of all the songs on the album, I prefer the most upbeat ones. But generally, I really do not like this type of disco. I wanted to skip so many songs, but fought through the pain. I lile the bass lines and guitar work though.
Repetitive, both lyrically and musically. I listened a couple of times, but just couldn't embrace this one. The best part was the tap shoe in My Feet Keep Dancing...the title repeated over and over again burned it into my memory. The rating reflects my interest in re-listening to this album
Ugh.....disco.
A bit dull and boring, the songs are too long, just not my cup of tea
I get it. Dancing. Painful.
Not my phing bruv. 1/5
not my cup of tea
Good Times is an iconic song has been sampled over 200 times and deservedly so. The rest of the album does not get sampled and deservedly so 3.7/10
I ALREADY RATED THIS YOU IDIOTS
First thought on opening up the page. Alright! Led Zeppelin! Wait, it's another sepia album cover. Not one I've listened to though. Good Times - There's a reason this has 146 million plays and the rest of the album doesn't. The bass line & guitar. 8 minutes is too long, but I can see how you'd want to keep that groove going on the dance floor. Rest of the album is forgettable as others have mentioned. Some nice bass lines and guitar playing, but nothing I'd revisit.
I am not a disco person
1/5. Honestly, sure, it’s definitely some disco but quite boring. Good times is old at this point and the fact that it is 7 minutes makes it worse.
It’s bad y’all. Generic even by disco standards. Songs are highly repetitive and overlong. A well deserved entry on Mt. Ughmore.
Not for me
The first song was decent. I couldn’t listen to any of the rest without skipping. Not sure why this album was on the list.
Not my favorite genre but the first song is a classic. Better than other disco. Skipped two tracks after halfway into them. 2 stars
About a minute into the first song: This is so good! Incredible baseline, rhythm, dancable as hell. About three minutes into the first song: Alright a bit repetitive, but it's a dance track so OK. At the end of the first track: Alright this is just like the last CHIC album I reviewed. Laying down funky, rhythmic, catchy beats even if a bit repetitive, and it goes on a bit longer than it needs to. At the end of the second song: Man, this is really repetitive, and not that good compared to the first song. At the end of the third song: Actually this just isn't good. By the end of the album: This sucks!! When I first reviewed CHIC (the album with "Le Freak" on it), I saw them as innovative and certainly inspirations to some my favorite music, mainly the electronic/funk/pop alternative stuff in the early 2000s like Daft Punk and LCD Soundsystem. Their songs were catchy and groovy even if they did run for too long. This album on the other hand, had one good song on it (the opening track). The rest were boring beats aside from some solid basslines and a few groovy guitar riffs. The vocals were horrendous: uninspired, repetitive, and at times cheesy.
No...just no
i wish i hadnt been subjected to this.
no
CHIT
couldn't finish
bruh
The one famous song but still bad.
Disko, not my cup of tea
