Kuuntelussa vasta perjantaina ja sopi tunnelmaan

3.5 stars

Enjoy the rhythms and beats, but the repetition quickly fades to the background - hard to actively listen to this album.

Funky classics.

I don't love disco. Don't really like disco. But damn it! When it comes on, it is impossible to not dance and smile.

Similar to EWAF I respect them a lot but it wasn’t my favorite to listen to.

Fun, sticky melodies. Songs can be a little long and a little repetitive. But the instrumentals are lush and fun. 3.5. Favorite tracks: "Good Times", "What About Me", "Will You Cry When You Hear This Song"

1979: Good Times, A Warm Summer Night, My Forbidden Lover

i know a lot of disco music is repetitive, which i usually don't mind... but for some reason this album got annoying very quickly.

It was ok. I'm not a fan of disco. There were some great bass lines in there.

Another CHIC album so soon? What a shame that this ended up being another disappointment. These guys are supposed to be pioneers in their genre, but instead their brand of funk just falls flat for me. Good Times is a classic, however that's about it for the whole thing, as everything else becomes meaningless repetitive noise which doesn't really go anywhere interesting. At least this is the last time they pop up in the list. Favourite track: Good Times Least favourite track: Can't Stand To Love You

First time listening to a Chic album. I feel like a serious music critic when I notice some similarities or inspirations in music. When I heard the bassline in Good Times I immediately thought of Around the World by Daft Punk and it seems other people have made that connection too and the duo themselves were inspired by Chic. It's a really funky bassline to be fair. Other than that I'd say the album was underwhelming. Yes, it had its moments and arguably the songs are good but personally I felt like something was missing. Maybe I will like other albums from them better 2/5

Good Times is a classic disco staple ( probably rightly so). The remaining tracks range from fairly decent to ok to overlong and a bit meandering. Not an album I’ll go back to, but ok.

Took me back to the disco days, some tracks triggered fond memories of my university days, but a whole album did drag.

More recognizable as samples from hip-hop tracks than as original songs.

I haven t grown up with disco, it was never a big part of my life. Seeing the other comments and them writing about how impactful it was, i do wish i understood the time period more but i just dont. While i do think the songs are a lot of fun in the beginning, halfway through, they keep on repeating and it gets quite annoying. I want to enjoy this album because i dont listen to disco and want to broaden my taste, but it's maybe just not the album for me. I think if you love disco and know the history, this is an amazing album. It's just not for me personally :( But if someone wants to explain the historical impact of this album 100% willing to listen.

It was alright. I was expecting a lot better. Nothing really memorable about it besides first song

It was fine.

For ensformigt.

Good times - 3 A warm summer night - 2 My feet keep dancing - 2 My forbidden lover - 2 Can't stand to love you - 3 Will you cry (when you hear this song) - 2 What about me - 2

The repetition kills me. So many songs that just go on and on. The songs are good, no doubt, but my brain gets stuck on these loops and I feel a little crazy after a while.

Not into it. There’s a reason disco died.

I'd rather listen to the songs that sample these songs.

We should thank CHIC for all of the amazing hooks that were sampled in subsequent generations.

This is pretty good but a bit too slow energy for my Mo-Town vibes.

Not my style at all.

Not my thing. I tried listening carefully but it's almost like I was waiting for the record to finish. The beginning seemed to go on forever, and the last few songs felt like they lasted a few seconds.

I was excited for this but it left me disappointed. Songs too long, some weird slow jam stuff... I wanted a party!

Meh, this is a one song album. The rest are pretty forgettable particularly the ballads. 2.5/5

Bezveze mi je album, iako volim njih inače. Imaju par hitova koji su vrh, ostalo mi sve zvuči isto i dosadno. 2/5, 3/10

Liked their other album more.

struggled through the longer songs, but it had its good moments.

Ça fait deux albums de Chic qu'on pogne mais toujours pas le premier. Le premier est le seul qui vaut vraiment le détour. Celui-là est à enlever de la liste. 2.49 étoiles .

Reviewing this the morning after listening to it, I realise I remember very little about it. Good Times is a bop, but the rest of the album made very little impression on me.

Perhaps it a feature of disco music but damn that drum beat is boring, song after song.

How does an album that only lasts 36 minutes feel so long. Each song is one, sometimes cool, idea that’s then just repeated until it’s driving you mad.

Thoughts before listening: Disco band with Nile Rogers. They had a bunch of hits in the 70s. Review: Doesn't get much more iconic in the disco world than "Good Times", and that kicks off this album. One thing that you tend to miss on these disco hits is just how strong the musicianship is, and this is a perfect example with solid grooves, popping bass lines, and funky guitar. On the first Chic album I got on this project I was mostly impressed with the jazzy instrumental track. This one doesn't have any of those tracks, so we're left with a mixture of overly long, repetitive disco songs meant for the dancefloor and sappy ballads. Even though I can appreciate the musicianship, this album as a whole just isn't for me..."Good Times" is a banger though. 2-stars

That's Chic alright, theyve distilled what they do into a general vibe more than almost any other band. They seem to have leveraged this into being a dependable mid bill festival band, which is fair play at this stage of their career. I sway between vaguely liking the disco sound and it getting on my nerves. No more to say than I did in the last review, this is still a 2.5 that is closer to a 2.

CHICK x2

Short take: Find a 4-minute version of “Good Times,” listen to it, then skip the rest. This album starts with the undeniably terrific song “Good Times” — great beat, love those jangly guitars — and drops off a cliff immediately thereafter. And at 8:08, “Good Times” is four minutes too long; that thing belongs on a 12” as a dance mix. Most of these tracks are choruses in need of a song. Lame, tired, and unimaginative lyrics are repeated over and over. RISQUE is bland, uninspired, numbingly repetitive and vacuous. I expected more from Nile Rodgers. 1.5 stars

Repetitive.

I really like their style, I really like a lot of these songs, but really, this one just runs out of steam quickly and gets so boring.

Hey I know this song! It's pretty good. It goes on a bit longer than I thought though...... Huh, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of unique lyrics..... Is it just going to keep repeating?..... I'm getting a little tired of this song. I hope they switch it up soon...... Wait, are you telling me every song on this album is a catchy 20 second tune looped for 8 minutes? I never thought I would say this, but someone get me a DJ. I need them to chop this album into something that isn't so repetitive.

Repetitive and boring. Very disco. Not great.

Only one salvable song.

No es mi estilo

I like the name of the album, the disco sound, and the popular first track. It wasn’t that great though.

Starts with a roller disco classic but the rest adds very little. 2 stars or D+.

Pretty bland stuff. Kinda CHIT actually.

Not really my thing. But I can appreciate funky bass lines and catchy beats. The songs did drag on too long, though.

that one song was good.

I think I listened to another by this group that I liked better. This one was either very disco or slow.

I’ve heard a good handful of these songs before but it’s not really for me. But I can see why people that like disco would like it.

Maybe there's a reason why disco is mostly remembered for the hits rather than for complete albums. Good Times is the longest track here but that doesn't make it wear off at all. It's Good Times! It's a classic, but the same can't be said for the rest. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards are great musicians (thanks to Nile, I have one of my childhood songs) but the entire album is purely groove, repeated verse and chorus and perhaps a tint of sophisticated disco strings. When you go through the songs that aren't Good Times, they start to become bland real fast. By the end of the second to last track, I audibly said "OK, I get it, damn". It's clear that this type of music was made for dancing, and if it does play in that setting, my feet will surely go for it. On a casual listen however, I fear that I take the opinion of my former co-worker who loved Bad Company: this isn't that good. I don't hate disco at all like he does, but I sort of understand why he can't stand it. Constant repetition shouldn't be a problem - I like house music! - but when it's served without much of an edge, it's not as exciting. All in all, we're always gonna have "Good Times" anyway...and rollerskates (5/10, 2/5 on this scale)

Some good songs, but is disco supposed to be this boring? Maybe it's a singles medium and the album just doesn't work.

Even though the album is only 37 minutes, every song seems like it's ten minutes long. The thing is, the songs are (mostly) pretty catchy, but they take a 45 second clip and repeat it over and over and over, so every song is so repetitive and the album seems to last forever. It's not country music bad, but it's not good.

Look, “Good Times” is incredible. Why do we need to even talk about the rest of the sort-of-meh album? That first track is SO GOOD. So much better than the rest of the sort-of-meh album.

It’s ok I guess. Why are these songs so long? And just continuously repetitive? Guess it’s a disco thing. Wasn’t super into this.

Honestly, other than Good Times this sucks. The songs overstay their welcome (including Good Times). They are funky but all sound similar enough that it's not very interesting. And all of the tracks are SO repetitive. Made for a 70s/80s dancefloor and not my headphones I suppose. 1.5/5 -> 2/5

I now know why people burned disco records

I get that this is an important album for disco, but it's not really the kind of music I care to listen to. It's definitely an album that deserves its place on this list (I'd rate that 4), but personally I'd rate it 2 - too smooth and a bit bland.

2 out of 5 GOOD TIMES! I don't think I have heard any other Chic songs. It was ok but not fast enough for me.

one good song, rest were all mediocre.

Honestly it's not that I hate disco cuz I actually do like disco but I like disco when there's really a song attached to it and this is just basically a dance groove with some quite frankly fairly benign vocals. When I think of great disco songs I think of Donna Summer, i think of Gloria Gaynor, I think of Stephanie Mills, The Jacksons late 70s Epic albums, EWF & the BeeGees to me all with better songwriting than what is presented here. And even though the grooves are tight I find it rather kind of boring for the most part . This is the best of the Chic trilogy here, and I'm throwing in the Sister Sledge album in here only because it's basically Chic in all but name. Better know reality it doesn't really do much for me. (5.7) ★★½ Actually I think it's a travesty that there's not a single Donna Summer album in here and she was the queen of disco i actually prefer her kind of sexual and emotional delivery over this

Very much not my thing. 2.5 stars.

Good times a classic, hard not to sing "I said a hip hop the hippy" when hearing the bass line. Song just a biiiiiitttttt too long like can't see it being over 8 minutes long when its a bass line and piano riff for 2 and a half min. Warm summer night is in the same boat as repetitive and long. Just looping over and over. Feet keep dancing also not standing out. My forbidden lover, repetitive. Ya know I'm slowly realizing this album may not be for me lol. overall 4/10

Not for me this one. Jus found it very difficult to get into and actually enjoy.

Better than C’est Chic, but I’m never going to love this, and some of these songs really drag.

Tanzmusik

Really liked the first song but it was quite meh after that. 4/10

Not as engaging as their last album I reviewed. This one felt like a bit of a drone.

For an album that bestowed upon us the bass line to one of the most iconic hiphop songs of all time this album is really bland.

Great sound and a few real classics. I'm sure it works really well on the dance floor. As an album it gets tedious being very repetitive and pretty much every song is much too long.

Never heard of this, going in with no expectations. It's disco, and straight away I reconised Good Times as the backing beat for Rapper's Delight. Also We Are Family maybe? Otherwise I didn't care much for any of this, and all the songs are longer than they need to be. I guess if you are dancing to them you want them to go on a while, but on just a listen it's too much.

I liked portions of this album, but I was surprised at how long each of these songs were. I thought the song would be done, and I'd look to see that there were still 3 minutes left. And it was 3 minutes sort of a repetitive groove. There were definitely some great beats, but overall I wouldn't purchase.

disco never hurt no one…… but the first half of the album just felt too long! the second half was way better 2.5

The one song I knew was fun to hear again. The rest …meh. Disco wasn’t my thang.

Dance album so the songs went on longer than they should have in my opinion. Nothing special.

It was ok… the “te quiero” song downgraded this to a 2.

CHIC, and. disco music in general is kind of like Mr. Rogers: lame as hell at the time, but the older you get, the cooler it becomes. This album isn't the CHIC album that should have been on this list, but that's just my opinion. The songs are long because they were meant to be danced to or to have energetic sex to. In either case, you didn't really want the tracks to be over in 2-3 minutes. :-D

Disco music. Knew the first song " Good Times" from all the pharma ads aimed at boomers. Overall, for me, this album is basically grocery store music.

Kinda disappointed with this one. I had a hell of alot of fun with c'est chic and this just didnt have the same sauce. It was rather boring mostly. There were some parts that got me going. There are freakin bass solos on this and that gets me bricked up. And those grooves are great throughout. But beyond that it just didnt have that same magic the last record had. The opening track is the best track here but its 8 minutes long and looses its luster over that time frame. It just drags and drags. I dont know, its just not as good for me.

The first song played and I figured this would be an easy 3 star album, since disco's never fully grabbed me. Then the rest of the album played and it was a really long half hour. Kept looking to see when the album was done. This would be a 1 star album if the first track didn't exist.

Not much here.

Turns out disco does kinda suck.

2, Disco is just not my thing.

There's only 7 tracks that total 36 minutes... but the first 3 are over 20 of those minutes. There's no need for Good Times to be 8 minutes long... and that's the best track on the album.

A little boring for me, but decent upbeat disco & funk music. We’re all familiar with “Good Times”, you can expect a similar vibe throughout the rest of the album. Some of the songs are on the long side. Pretty typical 70s-80s dance music.

The word that best describes this is disappointing. I had high hopes when it started off with Good Times. That’s a five star song. But then everything else was one star, bland and redundant. It was the kind of disco that made me hate disco. Probably because the best part of this album, first track in particular, is its use in early hip hop.

i think disco is a lot cooler culturally than actually having to listen to the music

Sorry, it just all sounds the same to me.

Good times was solid but the rest was not my cup of tea. Some decent funk at times but so forgettable. Did not make me want to dance

good times, fantastic, the rest kinda eh, nothing too noteworthy. If I wanted Nile Rodgers I'd rather listen to Sister Sledge or smthn. 2/5

A couple hits, many duds.

Not my thing

Thought I was listening to same song. Album played twice through before i realized that it was playing again

Can’t live up to its opening track.

A good record, but hard for me to distinguish or remember any specific tracks other than “Good Times.”

One great Disco hit is reasonable. But a whole album? Cruel and ill-advised.

I wanted to like this but ultimately it was a little underwhelming

Good times has one of the best baselines ever. Besides that, while not a bad album, it wasn’t exactly my cup of tea. Not my style (disco esque) and some songs were repetitious and a bit boring.

Easy listening. Favorite track was definitely good times.

Like most disco, the funky guitar riffs spark a little joy for a short time. But the rest of the sound gets annoying after a few minutes.

Ha empezado fuerte pero ha acabado aburriendo al final, aunque se lo achaco al estilo de música.

I was so excited to get a disco album. I knew Chic’s biggest hits. I mean, who could escape Good Times and Le Freak? However, I had never listened to any of their albums. Now I know why. Good Times is the only standout track on the album for me. The rest just felt too similar or overly repetitive lyrically. It would be fine as background music as it’s non-offensive and generally danceable, but I like my disco front and center in my face daring me NOT to dance to its temptingly infectious grooves. My rating is actually 2.5.

Funkiness aside, I agree with other listeners that found this repetitive. Pleasant enough, but I thought it all sounded a lot like good times. That is a great song I've probably just heard is a few hundred times too many. This was a radio staple during my upbringing.

Good beats, very repetitive which got grating.

Not a fan of disco. Not sure if I’ve only heard remixes of these songs or just that I never actually heard the full track but they were more boring than I expected.

Well done music but disco is not something I really enjoy

This was probably great music for dancing, but tbh quite a boring listen while, say, decluttering your spare bedroom on a Sunday afternoon. Many of the songs just go on and on (and on).

One all time great disco song. The rest all blend together.

OK, so "Good Times" is one of the most sampled tunes ever, and it's a bit of a banger beyond that... but boy, I would not have expected two albums from Chic on the 1001, and I certainly wouldn't have included this record.

This album features some great 2 minute long songs that somehow got dragged out to 6 or 8 minutes without actually adding anything.

Is it well produced? Yes. Musically it could have been produced today. But these songs go absolutely nowhere. Clearly music to do cocaine to. And the vocal arrangements are pure 1970s over the top.

I like disco but this album didn’t connect to me at all :(

Chaque chanson part pas mal et puis tu te rends compte qu'elle dure 7 minutes et ça devient relou.

Eh. I appreciate it but won't be returning.

If you leave off the three singles, which were probably most listened to via 12”/7” formats, you are left with four rather background listening tracks (in my opinion).

Too polished, and often too soft, the album loses impact even though the bass is solid and even though Nile Rodgers sometimes shine. But it feels like funk taking a wrong turn to me. The choruses just repeat, there are no surprise or so few. It’s basically the dance music from that era and I struggled to find excitement in it.

The number one track is a hit. Sure. But I found the rest of the album very so so. Found some nice patterns, but I found most tracks boring.

I've mellowed in my disco opinion over the years, but this sound still isn't for me. Can't deny the quality though.

Second album I've listened to by them on this list. First track is classic, rest were innocuous.

Eh. I mean, it’s just fine. But it’s basically your standard disco, repetitive and boring. Not bad. But not for me.

This is basically just disco filler music. I can get downtown Good Times, but after reaching minute 6 and hearing "These are the good times" for the 20th time, I realized I wasn't listening to real music.

Didn't know I knew a couple "disco" songs but this has some known hits on it. I didn't get a super disco vibe like I prejudged. Pretty jamming. Clean production. Why do disco songs need to be so long as a whole?

Disco ist ja nicht so meins. Pflichtbewusst durchgehört.

As a friendl of the HBTQI and supporter of BLM i can truly say: Disco sucks!

Disco favorites. Brings back lots of memories. Look back on disco music, and think was it really music? But, fun to dance to.

Quite repetitive. Knew the first song, but others weren't anything special.

The main problem with this album is how repetitive it is, specially the first part. The first three songs past the 6 minute mark, the first one reaching the 8 minutes, and in the entirety of these tracks, they don't realy offer different ideas, they stick with the same riffs and vocal melodies, so, when I had reached the half of theses songs, I already felt tired of them. The good part is that, the last songs, are a around the 4 minutes, so this problem isn't that present. In the end, it felt boring. If this album was supposed to make me want to dance, it failed for me.

I think everyone has sampled something from this album i do not like disco

It's fine.

Pleasant enough, watered down Funk/Disco. Couple of famous ones. But nothing really to write home about. Uninspiring is probably the best way to describe it. 2 for the quality of musicianship and production.

Really excellent, but after a track or 3 it just starts to become repetitive

Very repetitive to the point it gets annoying

Who knew that Good Times was 8 minutes long? Didn't really have any issues with this but it was also fairly bland and I kinda zoned out from listening to it to be honest. Standard album of it's genre

Really not interested at all in this. Wallpaper, indistinguishable from so much else out there.

Love you mom! You’re favorite album is here

First thought was I had never heard of this group, but as soon as the 1st track started I was like "oh yeah! I know this song!" Not fond of the repetativeness of the lyrics though, probably wouldn't listen to it again but I did add Good Times to my favorites list.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. It was pretty bland for disco.

Album 715 of 1001 CHIC - Risque (1979) Rating : 2.5 / 5 A pretty decent album. They are more than their disco hits from back in the day. Some nice funk. Not only for the dance floor.

Beyond the title track, which is kind of a disco classic, the rest was a bit forgettable. I’m just not that into this kind of thing.

The epitome of disco music. I kind of liked My Forbidden Lover, but in general I just wasn’t a fan of the album. Good Times sounded very familiar, but apparently some members of the band wrote We Are Family the same year, it was just released by a different group.

Good Times VERY GOOD

First? 3 /5 Again? 1,5 /5

This album is not my favorite, but it is not bad. I do not like the genre of music.

i give it a 2 because i like the song lyrics the second one is good to so a 3 the third one i dont really like it

the first song is alr not that good but not that bad the background music is good the second song is not really good its not ad tho the last song started off lowk weird

I son't like this song because I feel like it is saying the same word over and over agian a warm summer night I like this song because I think it is talking about like summer because I like summer can't stand to love you I don't like this song because I feel like it is saying the same word over and over agian

Nawet fajne

-So it’s not terrible, but I was honestly very overwhelmed. most of the songs felt very repetitive and dull? I know the repetition was probably intentional but it was still not particularly enjoyable at times -still had a pretty fun vibe at least… disco at its most disco -Favorites are My Feet Keep Dancing and Can’t Stand To Love You

This was so boring. "Good Times" is a great song, but even then it doesn't need to be 8 minutes long. I know Nile Rodgers is great, and the music is fantastic, but this falls into all the bad disco traps like being overly long and repetitive. There's worse on this list, but there's also a lot better.

Taken individually the songs are more or less ok but a whole album of that is really repetitive.

Skimmed through but I have a good idea

I saw Niles Rogers/CHIC open for Madonna last year. It was a phenomenal performance. If your toe is not tapping or your head is not moving when you hear Good Times, I don’t want to know you. Overall, this album is meh. After the stellar opening track it all goes downhill. The second track is awful. I would call this disco with some funk infused into but I would not listen to most of this album again.

1.9 2x

Upbeat disco songs are incredibly repetitive, and the slow ones are just unlistenable.

Det eneste gode ved det her album er at det indirekte gav os Rappers Delight

I Liked the sound but the first few tracks were 12inchers (6mins long) and became repetitive.

Definitely some good grooves in here but I felt like the tracks were dragged out too long and wasn't too inspired and skipped around a bit. 2 star for me.

Disco. :/

If I’ve heard one disco song, I’ve heard them all.

Not much of interest other than the one radio hit.

Meh I mostly enjoyed this to hear the original samples that better songs use (see daft punk). It's a tad too disco for me and every song goes in for too long. Good Times does not need to be 8 mins long

Didn't enjoy this one as much as C'est Chic, mostly because it didn't have an anchor song like Le Freak. Good Times is solid but nothing else stood out to me.

Nothing worse than slow paced disco and this had plenty.

Classic pop album. Sounds great. One great and very-radio-friendly song, and then a bunch of nonsense that makes you suspect that the one song was accidental. Nile Rodgers is a great producer and he and Bernard Edwards make great backing tracks. Chic was just missing songwriting and interesting leads.

Boy it’s a kick in the crotch to hear “Good Times” first thing on 11/6/24. Sigh. Look, it’s a fine disco album, but it’s still a disco album. So, it’s probably great for finding breakbeats but otherwise it’s not exciting to me. Can’t fault the musicians - Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards are great here. Just not today.

Disco! Not my thing! Good Times is familiar, the rest are forgettable

At least half the songs drag on for minutes longer than I would want them too. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards can't carry the album forever.

Hadn’t heard of them, but have definitely heard their hit songs. Didn’t enjoy the album that much. Not my favourite genre.

It's okay just not my thing.

2+ Stars (6/15)

Good Times good. The songs are too long + I don't really care for the genre

To all the idiots saying that this is an album full of incredibly repetitive songs that could be a minute long and would contain all that the song had to offer, I refer them to My Feet Keep Dancing, which has a tap-dance solo in it. Take that, dickheads! This album makes me think of pressing a 9V battery onto my sweaty balls - yes, it may make my leg jiggle a bit, but it is otherwise horrible and makes me feel a bit ill.

The first song on this ("Good Times") is definitely the only hit off it for a reason. It's not a terrible album, but there are a lot of slower (not great) songs that really change the feel of the more upbeat numbers. I liked it well enough, but not enough to really listen to it again.

Started strong and faded fast. Just not my jam

They just don't do interludes like this anymore. Smash

Did not like this one

Not suitable for running

every single song on this album was exciting until it got super repetitive. This happened for every single song. If I don’t know if the songs were shorter or had it slightly more variety, I would definitely consider giving this a higher rating, however, I feel like they took one sentence and ran with it. It was genuinely a good vibe, and I grooved alone to the songs each time, but then after two maybe three minutes, it was boring and just kept sounding the same.

Boring

Groovy // repetitive

Perhaps if I were in a club, circa 1979, making work on an 8 ball. I would probably rate this higher. Considering that's certainly not the case for me, I give this a 2. Only because, Good Times" is kinda cool for like 3.minutes.

It just felt to repetitive. If you would consider this disco, I would say I understand why it’s dead

Bleh. I already knew I wasn’t gonna like this from the other Chic album we had to listen to and I was right. There’s a reason disco is dead. Each song just drags on and on and on and on. The lyrics are just the same crap repeated over and over and over and over. The only reason this isn’t a 1 is because the bass lines are solid and Nile Rodgers can play the guitar really well. Otherwise this album was unpleasant to experience just like the last one. Disco should stay dead.

ugggggghhhhhh. each song is a refrain repeated over, and over, and over, and over. nope

Disco sucks - and so does most of this album. 'Good Times' is fine, but everything else sounds kind of like a poor facsimile of a copy of a rip-off of that. 'My Forbidden Lover' is apparently the second most listened to song on the album (on Spotify; 13M, [compared with 183M for 'Good Times!]), but this probably says more about the foibles of people than the quality of the track

War okay als Hintergrundmusik, aber so richtig doll hat es mich nicht abgeholt. 2/5

8 minutes of Good Times. Wore me out! The second song, A warm summers night was a nice, smooth song. Then more disco and stuff that just didn't work for me.

When I first heard this, I thought "oh, great... Another late 70s disco funk record" then the second song came on, and it changed my mind.... But only for a hot minute. By the time the third song came on, I realized that, yes, this is just another generic disco esque funk album. While listening to this, the bass riffs were groovy and funky. But very similar throughout the record. I'm not convinced this band, or this record, rather... Has a lead singer. It sounds just like 3 back up singers singing parts. I was convinced that maybe something was wrong in the mixing... That they just muted the lead vocals. But nope. It's just lacking a lead singer and lacking a lyrical direction. There's nothing good about this record aside from some cool instrument playing but nothing that will keep me coming back to this record. I was over it by song 2. And therefore, this record gets the same star rating.

I do really like disco but this was just okay for me. It wasn’t as fun and distinctive as I like disco to be.

Pretty enjoyable. But monotonous and boring.

Meh, very meh.

Amazing if your tripping your tits off in a club in 1975. As I'm not doing any of that I found it repetitive. Tight band and good vocals it's just...you know...disco, and disco sucks .

The pacing isn't quite the flow or rhythm I associate with the age, or with dance music, but I feel it beginning. That change. I respect it for it's point in the timeline. I don't know if I'd go on to listen to it on my own time. Ultimately, a lot of this album is written from the point of view of the romantic. Alas, one I can't quite empathize with. Two stars, one for each good song, Good Times and What About Me.

If you want to learn how to stretch a good hook or musically idea or frase out until it sucks - this album is a perfect lesson. Even from songs like "Good Times" I´m longing for a much shorter single-version. Boring and repetitive. Bring it to the dancefloor but it´s simply not the stuff for an album!

Two albums down for Chic and they are still not for me. 2/5

Definition of mid. 2.5. Not really a bad song on here, but no great ones. Average funky kinda sort of catchy stuff.

I guess I had only heard the radio edit of “Good Times” before but I enjoyed the album version more than I do the song I’ve heard in grocery stores and dentist offices a million times. The lyrics are still utterly moronic and the hook is repetitive, but the extended instrumental section almost redeems the song. That is about the only good thing I have to say about this album. I know the whole “Disco Sucks” movement was grounded in racism and homophobia from middle-aged white construction workers who throw batteries at Santa Claus that thought everyone should just be happy to listen to Bachman Turner Overdrive for the rest of time, but disco sucks. Disco music is music made for people to dance to. Is “The Electric Slide” or “The Cupid Shuffle” on this list because of their importance in giving boring people something to do at weddings? This music does not need to be heard unless you are wearing bell bottoms, being felt up by Andy Warhol and doing the hustle. Every review of this album talks about how people have sampled the beats to make other songs. Okay. That just means these are bad songs with some good beats in them. Let’s listen to those better songs that reuse these beats instead of these songs that are really only good for disco dancing and the few ballads they threw in for when the coke wore off I guess. Most of this is pretty lame, and even worse, it’s lame and way too long. If you’re going to be cheesy, at least get it over with quickly. On the plus side, the overall album length isn’t too bad, even if the songs are way too long. In conclusion, disco sucks. *throws battery at Santa Claus*

Not sure about this one

Good Times is a good song. This is not a great album.

Dated and boring

Did not like.

Well I feel quite the fool. If I knew I could make millions of pounds and tour extensively just by using the same few chords in a different order, my life would be changed for ever. Good work Chic, you've got me this time.

Not without talent, just not for me

I did not get as into this album as I had hope. It definitely has groove and it certainly was not bad by any means. I just found it too disco for my personal taste

Nice in a club or bar. Not Chic's best - but a pleasant enough listen in the background. Good Times is of course a disco classic.

A few long disco tunes. I want to emphasize that I have no issues with disco music; however, almost every song in this collection was too long and repetitive. Luckily the music kind of fades into the background, but I was expecting to enjoy this much more than I did.

AM Gold ... This was the disco that everyone revolted against in the 70's. The only remarkable track is My Feet Keep Dancing. That track is a mechanical loop of "My Feet Keep Dancing." Beyond that I can't decide which is more pathetic, people coming out of the woodwork to blow up disco records or this CHIC being on this list twice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqbPSKCwdnw

Still looking for a good time, I headed back to the club for another boogie down with CHIC a year later. I was unfazed by my previous escapade passing out on the velvet sofa waiting for “Le Freak,” and chose to look past the cultural tide trying to turn against disco. Who cared about “Disco Demolition Night?” What did Chicago White Sox fans know about music anyway? When the disco ball was spinning and the records were playing, there was no cure for disco fever. Trouble is, the oil crisis brought on by those crazy cats in Iran made it so that I couldn’t afford to fill the tank of my Cutlass Supreme, so I was walking that night. The walk wore me out, but a stop at Big Jim’s buzzed me right back up. And this time, my buzz was met right away by some “Good Times.” I left my cares behind, and the good times kept going. And going. And going. And then they finally stopped. Abruptly. And they never got going again after that opening song. I was really disappointed, and I started to rethink my disco devotion. The next week, rather than heading back to the club, I burned my bell bottoms in a back alley trash can and hauled my records down to Comiskey Park. Halfway through the third inning I started throwing them on the field. First CHIC, then KC and the Sunshine Band. I hurled a Bee Gees record so far it smacked Chet Lemon in the back of the head in left field. Security and the police dragged me away - apparently Disco Demolition Night didn’t go very well and it’s not ok to throw your unwanted albums at baseball players. But everything turned out alright. I met some punks in the slammer and they inspired me to pick up a studded leather jacket and “London Calling” when I made bail. They even said it’s ok to throw things at punk shows!

Disco is like the Chumbawumba and/or Macarena of the 1970s. Sure, instead of a whiskey drink or a vodka drink, they were snorting lines off a mirror or their partner’s chest. But they were all in just the same. All in with the same regret and r/blunderyears material decades later. Disco feels good at first. The bass is greatly groovy. But then you realize your were listening through the equivalent of beer goggles (cocaine ears?). See, the thing about the old days, is they the old days.

This smooth disco stuff is just not my bag.

Short but decent

Not my jam

Too much commercial disco/soul music for me. Can't get enough of "Good Times" though.

Nile und Bernie - groß! Zwei Sterne.

The lead track, Good Times is a great, classic dance tune with an exceptionally funky, punchy bassline. But the rest of the album is classic disco drivel.

I was only familiar with their big hit "Good Times". I'm listening to the album I find that most of it is an excellent dance beat accompanied by the same phrase sung over and over. Maybe good to dance to, but not to just listen.

It's like every time they have a good song and hook they make the song an extra 5 minutes long until you don't like it anymore.

I had an ironic t-shirt in my high school days that said "Disco sucks" on it. But truth be told I haven't actually listened to much of it aside from the staples of those older folks waxing nostalgia. I can't hate on that bass line in Good Times. But I will say that song could probably be about 2 minutes shorter. Still a great track and obviously defining of the era, based on how much I've heard it in my life being born well after peak disco era. Mostly just found myself not interested in listening, another dud to me.

Chic is a legendary band. Nile Rodgers is a musical genius. This album, however, is of its time. Can an album wow me without knowledge of the band? Can i be held captive by the music alone? Outside of the first track, no.

1.5 - I feel bad giving it such a low rating, but it's super repetitive, so even if I did like a song, I would usually end up being sick of it by the end of the track. It got to be a bit annoying.

Not my genre, and the songs were long. Not to take anything away from the talent of the artists here (which I can appreciate), but this one didn't do it for me. 2.5.

While I was mildly entertained, I found the repetition monotonous. Two stars because I recognize the skills

Hier word je wel snel moe van zeg. Op een 70s verkleed feestje zou ik beter kunnen waarderen.

Gezellig en herkenbaar.

Mwa, niet echt een genre waar ik heel erg warm voor loop.

pleasant music with a chill vibe. however, most of the songs on the album tend to be pretty redundant, and aggressively so. case in point, the only song i knew from the album going in was “good times”. the version they play on the radio (the version i was familiar with) was under four minutes, whereas the album version is over eight minutes. oof. hell, the best song here is “can’t stand to love you” and it clocks in at just under three minutes.

I was excited for this and then bored

Among the most repetitive albums I’ve heard on this list, especially the first few songs Fun at times but it didn’t feel very substantial; but I suppose I feel that way about most disco anyhow. Favorite was when Will You Cry

Nostalgic, but I'm not into it

2 - Late era disco. Not my cup of tea for repeated listening, but was a nice trip back in time. Some songs way too long.

It's really not my style. All the songs are soooooooo long.

While there is some good production, most of the songs are way too long. For example, "A Warm Summer Night" started out really strong, but it was dragged on without any change in production or any interesting lyrics. However, I can see how people who like disco music and don't care about lyricism can find a lot of enjoyment in this album. Overall, it is not an album I find myself wanting to revisit.

One decent song but not for me

Confirms disco is not a genre I enjoy.

Disco bleh. Every track sounds the same, all of them quite nauseating.

Cool and funky, songs have been heavily sampled by classic hip hop, but not an album I could see myself regularly listening to.

As much as I respect the subjective rationale behind the review currently topping this section, I have to argue that listening to *Risqué* without legendary opener "Good Times", even to better judge the other less familiar cuts, can't provide a clear picture of this album's dynamics. And this for one simple thing: "Good Times" might be a tower of a song, but the album version drags on and on and on (compared to the single version, I presume). And in a way, this initial self-indulgence foretells everything in that record that makes Chic a great 'singles band', but also an awkward act when it comes to albums and their very different needs and requirements. My main gripe with that record is not about its overall "disco" style, by the way--that beef between rock and disco is a battle from a long distant past no one in their right mind cares about now, fortunately. For one thing, I think there are not enough "pure", four-on-the-floor disco tracks on this thing: I only consider "Good Times" and "My Feet Keep Dancing" as being representatives of that style, really. Take very recent *Future Nostagia*, by Dua Lipa, and listen to how an album filled to the brim with four-on-the-floor galore can be exhilarating, by the way. This here is the sort of album dynamics that are cruelly lacking in this Chic LP. So no, my main gripe with *Risqué* is not about disco, my gripe is that the tunes in this album are so damn linear. Some of them seem to go on and on--just like "Good Times", but with less assets when it comes to instant catchiness and rhythmical power. And it doesn't matter what style the songs are displaying. When Chic tackles the torch songs, soul, rythm'n'blues and funk that were always on the margins of disco at the times, they're not fully convincing to say the least. If tracks such as "Can't Stand To Love You" and "Will You Cry"--obviously very decent compositions--had been performed by Sly And The Family Stone a few years earlier, they would be raucous, lively, hearbreaking, *outré*, unpredictable. In other words, they would be *alive*. The same if a similar ground had been covered by Outkast decades later. But in *Risqué*, those cuts sound innocuous, even aspectic, with a few hackneyed or hokey solo vocal performances on top of them to try to bring life into the proceedings--to no avail, unfortunately. As hard as Chic can try, there's nothing... *risqué* about those recordings. It's too goddamn safe. Much has been said about the powerhouse that Niles Rodgers and co. were, and how their many skills made them essential acts for black music. But there's a downside to those stellar skills: most of the times, Chic turn everything into an all-too-clean simulacrum. And this is why, album-wise, they sound so stale for many ears. Add to this a couple of obvious fillers inside what is only a seven-song album--fillers coming up as early as tracks number 2 and 4 ("A Warm Summer Night" and "My Forbidden Lover"), and what you get is a mixed bag. An endearing one at times, for sure. But nothing as "essential" as critics usually say it is. In other words, I would love to own a greatest hits album by Chic one day (possibly one not too expensive, granted I have room left on my shelves). But when it comes to their studio albums, I can live without them, clearly. 2/5 for the purposes of this list, translating to a 7/10 grade for more general purposes (5 + 2) Number of albums left to review: 450 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 256 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 132 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 165 (including this one)

I'm sure this is fine if you like disco. . 'Good Times' is ok but even that goes on for far too long.

Another case where the music got massively better as soon as the album stopped and Spotify started playing similar hits. Each tune was a couple of minutes too long . Good Times was an inspiration for a lot of samplers in the eighties.

It's another disco album. A couple of songs were recognizable. It was alright but I am not going to listen to it again.

The production on this was pristine. The bass was amazing, in the first song obviously highly influential. But the drop off is steep, and the songs are way too long and repetitive.

Feels bad rating this so low, but genuinely each track is too long and repetitive. Some tracks aren't even that long and they still feel like they drag! Obviously what's there is good, which is why it's been sampled and reused so much, but at its core this is a record that kind of explains why disco was so maligned. I like disco, I'm European, but this was a bit tiresome.

This album has everything going for it that should make it something I quite like; it's groovy, funky, the riffs are satisfying, and all the music is technically well crafted. Yet, I cannot seem to care or get into this much at all. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, but it is hard time to see this as more than something you know would've played at the roller rink, and I think even Chic knows that. There is definitely a place in music for that, but perhaps that "place" was torn down twenty or thirty years ago for a reason.

One good song and no other memorables?

Not really for me, pretty repetitive

Apparently a great album if you like Disco. I don't like Disco.

fairly boring disco, nothing extra. The most commercially succesful song is 8 mins long for no fucking reason, while it could have lasted 4 mins at most and be semi-enjoyable. 2 stars at best, sorry boomers, enjoy your colonoscopy

Five stars for "Good Times" (although I prefer the shorter radio edit), and two stars for the rest.

This really didn't wow me. Not a very big disco fan, so this fell flat for me.

Holy shit, one of the most recognisable bass lines right off the bat! Sampled 217 times apparently, according to whosampled.com Great start, although it should have finished about 5 minutes ago. What a come down. This one seems a bit better, needs a higher tempo for goodness sake! It's all a bit slow, can you disco to this?! And it's over, that came around quickly. Apart from the first song, which tries to stretch a bassline out for way too long, nothing much really happens. I thought a disco record would be a bit more upbeat and uptempo, but this is frankly rather boring. 2 / 5 stars.

- Never listened to a Chic album before - Good Times is a very good song, but it's 5 minutes longer than I thought it was - Rest is just okay

Ok funk

If I'm being brutal, it makes disco seem a bit boring

Disappointing very forgettable but not terrible

Started off really loving it. Bit of funk. Quickly went downhill though, by the time "will you cry" came on I was praying it would soon end. If they kept the same energy and enjoyment from the first track throughout it would have been a couple stars higher

The question is do you rate the artist or the album or the cultural significance. I recognize the significance but I rate the album 2 stars.

That first song starts pretty good...and then it wears out its welcome. And the rest...is just there. Not 1 star bad, but the best part of this album is the first 4 minutes.

First impressions: Sounds like ABBA. I've never been into disco music, but the basslines were kinda cool. There were a few songs that sounded proto Vulfpeck to me. Like funky basslines and all. Had a few ballads in the middle. I didn't like the overly simplistic lyrics. Production was really good. The biggest contributor to the low review is that this isn't a genre I particularly enjoy.

1/7, 14%

The first track is Rapper's Delight without the rap, which is something I guess. Best track: Good Times

I understand why it’s here but that doesn’t mean I’m happy about it. High 2.

5/10 not my thing.

I think I would have liked this album if just about every song had been half the length. Best tracks: My Feet Keep Dancing and Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song)

I dig it, but too much repetition for my taste. Chic is perfect for a wedding and I can imagine they’re fun live.

Every track is 20%-50% too long. I guess that’s the disco style so you can keep dancing, but it sure didn’t feel like this with their other album. This has some fantastic grooves, but… does not reward focused listening.

Two Chic albums in two days! I liked the first one, but this one is just a bit too disco for me.

Good Times, ikoninen kappale mutta sen ei välttämättä tarvitsisi olla 8min. Kovat bassolinjat ja Nile Rodgersin kitarariffit, mutta muuten aika perus discoa

So bad. Every song was 3x as long as it should have been and they all sounded the same.

Good Times is a classic disco track and after that the album is fine but nothing special

Album completamente carryato da Good Times. Il resto sono filler disco e ballad completamente dimenticabili. Belli gli archi e la chitarra di Nile Rodgers

Not horrible, but songs are very repetitive. Wasn't really for me.

Good Times is great, but not my type of music overall.

one good song rest is just filler

Good Times is a great tune. As attested by the various (improved, imo) versions that have used that bassline. But the rest left me feeling like what I imagine a night at Stringfellows might sound and feel like: cheesy, sleazy and feeling a little queasy.

Boring yet somehow still catchy. Can take one riff and two vocal lines and stretch it out to 8 minutes on repeat. Disco sucks.

Just a bit dull and repetitive. Good Times is a classic but it needs a radio edit, absolutely no need for eight minutes of it. Not the best disco record that we've had, it's fine but just a bit too slow and all sounds quite similar. 2/5.

Great sound for 3 minutes! Then the song goes on for another 3. Then the rest of the album is more of the same

Not my cup of tea

Wow so many babies were probably made to this album when it came out.

*Disclaimer....Disco definitely does NOT suck That said, i'm sick of looking at/ hearing CHIC. Good times is a played out banger, the rest of this is mediocre. Hoping they've a better album on this list.

Esta onda no es mi onda

It starts strong with the one of the two Chic tracks that almost everyone knows - 'Good Times'. The rest is mostly forgetable and by the end of its short 36 minute playing time I found myself wanting it to stop soon. Too repetitive to just sit and listen to.

Good Times is a good two mi Ute song that lasts almost eight minutes. Rest average.

According to my stats, funk is my least favorite category. This bears out.

Couple of great songs surrounded by a bunch a lackluster ones

Good Times a classic disco track. Nice supporting cast of songs.

Chic suffers from having been played as music over the soundsystem at Sears. You just can’t take it seriously.
