Reviews (page 4 of 13)

I don't like everything on this album but look, the highs are so high and I have an endless respect for this artist.

Absolutely stellar record. So beautiful and so haunting. Couldn’t stop listening.

Voice wise she isn't my favorite but theres so much emotion in her stuff I can't help but love it. Its unique and incredibly beautiful and flows together excellently

Excellent

Legend

Nina Simone is one of the greats. I love her voice and she’s such a natural talent on the piano. This album was beautiful - a bit too sad for me for day to day listening, but I will be pulling the first song on to my 2024 playlist. Would put this album on if I needed a blues/jazz classics vibe but wanted to make ppl cry.

So dark and so wonderful. That voice and the way she tells her narrative. No idea how.she got away with that.

Damn this was great. Added to my collection.

Another fantastic discovery since starting this project. Powerful and mesmerizing with each song feeling similar but each uniquely different.

Definitely enjoyed this

Excellent album. Glad it was recommended

This was just great. Powerful songs, great music, some of them really are a jam. My favorite here was probably Break Down and Let It All Out.

Nina rocks. Glad I heard this one

Sehr schönes Album, das angenehm durchhörbar ist.

Beautiful album. I'd never heard Nina Simone before this. It's wild to me that this album is made of leftover tracks from other albums. Favorites: Four Women, Lilac Wine, Wild Is The Wind

These are really good

An absolute masterpiece!

Either way I lose

This would make a more manageable list of only 101 albums you need to hear before you die. It'd be on a list of 50 albums. Remarkable. We should have appreciated Nina Simone more while she was alive. This album proves she'll live forever.

Wow. Never heard of Nina Simone before. What a truly special and unique voice. Learning about the existence of artists like this is what makes 1001 albums great.

Mad how leftovers can be this good

i’ve been waiting for more women in this round up GOD

Such amazing vocals. The entire album was great, but 'Four Women' is such a standout.

Beautiful

Fantastic. This was great end of the work day music

I Love Your Lovin’ ways- good start to the album and has catchy lyrics. 6/10 Four Women- The album cover says it’s “unforgettable” and it’s correct. Encapsulates feeling with lyrics and Nina’s beautiful voice. Simple yet powerful. 9/10 What More Can I say- Much like most of the songs on this album, this is just good. Nina’s Piano work plus her voice makes anything an instant classic. I like her slower songs. 7/10 Lilac Wine- Slow, lyrical and hypnotizing. 9/10 That’s All I Ask- none of the songs on this album are bad, but some just don’t hit as much as the rest. Still great though. 6/10 Break Down and Let It All Out- love the emotion in this song, the mastering is also great. Nina sings in your left ear while the bass plays behind her, and the drums stay in your right. 7/10 Why Keep On Breaking My Heart- I love the flow of this song, it’s different from the others on this album and is refreshing. 7/10 Wild Is the Wind- A YouTube comment described her piano playing “As If God is telling her what to play.” Absolutely stunning work, silky smooth vocalizations from Nina make this song an easy 10/10. Black is the Color of my True Loves Hair- A slower one, but still good. It lets me really feel the waves that Nina’s voice goes through. 7/10 If I Should Loose you- It feels redundant writing these when every song is good. What do you want me to say? Great piano. Great voice. 7/10 Ether Way I Loose- a good closer to the album, I love the bass playing in the left ear as well as the trumpet. Still smooth but more upbeat than the others on the album. 8/10

It's Nina Simone. She is everything great about music.

Excellent shit. Very rare to have music where you can vibe along to the lyrics but also vibe along to the music very hard. Good blues-esque music. Her vocals are very good, obviously. You can also listen to individual instruments like the drum and the piano and they all add something individual to the music rather than just blurring into the background. It’s a bit cheeky. She can sing about racial and political issues but not sound ‘preachy’ which is quite cool. 4/5 star

Just outstanding. I agree with a previous review that said if this came out today no one would blink an eye and it would get overlooked. Which would be a crime. Just a powerful example of the great Nina. Loved it.

One of the greatest vocal performances ever. Like to me the most telling thing was going in I felt ehh this is gonna be a filler album till we get to the good stuff unlikely that I will like any song. At the end of it every single song was in my playlist. Phenomenal stuff.

Dam. What an emotional punch in the gut. I always thought Nina Simone was singing about the plight of black woman which I wasn’t ready for but this album weaved it into an album and the intensity of love and loss. I got teary eyed just listening to her sing that’s all I ask as a woman who was ready to give up everything at a moments notice if a guy just gives her attention. Loved this album and made me realize I can appreciate albums with emotional depth.

For some reason I hadn’t listened to Nina Simone before! So sultry and poetic! She’s knows the power of restraint. Awesome album.

Great album. Such a sad story

This is sooooo good. Excellent instrumentation and musicality. Giving me a lot of feels. Why Keep On Breaking My Heart is kind of a dud for me. Everything else, so far, is incredible. I tuned out for a little bit, but that's because I listen at work, and I got bombarded with emails, but this is so good.

Amazing

Mais qu'est-ce que je viens de vivre... 4,5/5

An eclectic compilation album of a legendary singer. lots of anger, heartbreak, and nostaliga with varied accompaniment. I feel a little silly for ranking a compilation album made from leftovers so highly... but it spoke to me

Gergeous. Just beautiul.

Brilliant. For once, I agree that this is indeed an album that everyone should hear before they die. 5/5

Killer!! Just her voice is so emotional and beautiful and the lyrics are so soulful and the album is so versatile and goes through so many emotions

Nina Simone has done better stuff. But that's also in this list, so...

i honestly thought this album was beautiful. i likely won't revisit it but it's still a 10/10.

Fantastic jazz album. This has got to be a jazz standard. I really enjoyed listening to this. 5 out 5.

New Orleans in the 1960s, smokes in the air and I'm downing a mug of beer while watching couples mingle and vampires hypnotize drunk victims

EITHER👏🏿WAY👏🏿I👏🏿LOSE👏🏿

I love your lovin ways was a first impression that made me a little worried for the album. For 1966 I felt that kind of blues was a little outdated. The flip switched on the very next song, four women is a powerful ballad that sucked me right into the album. Nina Simone is not an artist I’m not very familiar with but I can see why she’s as popular as she is. For the rest of the album there really wasn’t any misses. While I still feel this album feels like something that sounds like it’s from a decade or two sooner, the messages behind the songs, the production, and the vocals, make it something timeless. One of my favorite albums so far

I listened to this album 3 times yesterday.

Incredibly powerful emotional album

20/10 amazing

An amazing album. So full of love and sadness. 10/10

This album is absolutely beautiful. How can you not enjoy Ms. Simone at her peak? Almost 60 years later and it’s still a classic.

Songs I liked from album Four women - 5/5, powerful, emotional song Break down and let it all out

So beautiful! Usually I’m having a hard time rating such classics, because they tend to be pretty but dont really do anything for me. This one just blew me away. Her voice and her passion, with all the conflicting emotions made me stop and fully focus on listening. I’m giving it a 5 and I’ll be looking out for a vinyl copy to add to my little collection. (Still I like Bowie’s cover of the title song better)

If Nina Simone's voice ruled the world, there would be peace

Well, a week has already gone by, and oh boy, do we have an interesting album to end the week with. This also marks a few firsts for me, similarly to the last one, the most notable of which to me being my first album by a female artist and my first non-rock or rock-inspired album. Funnily enough, that's not the only connection to the last album I listened to, as David Bowie actually covered the title track from this album. It might seem surprising, but I don't think I had heard of Nina Simone before today. I gotta say, this was a great introduction. I can't really say that this album had a bad song on it. The tone was very consistent and wonderful, despite this being a compilation album. Her voice is very pleasant to hear. The piano work was quite good. Some of the songs are about meaningful topics that weren't sung about as much in the 60s, with Four Women being the pinnacle of that. After doing some research, I can absolutely see the impact of this album and artist, and seeing as this is apparently the only one of Nina Simone's albums to be on this list, I feel like giving this album a 5/5 is the right call.

It's Nina Simone, what else can I say?

What an amazing album, I think I listened to it four times! Such a powerful voice. Wild Is The Wind is my favourite. Five stars from me, because I loved it.

Wow. Tje song Four Woman hits hard. You can hear the pain in it. I love that you can hear the sound of silence in the room where it's recorded. It's so good! Pure talent!✨️

FOUR WOMEN

Vintage romance. Bit of a shock coming down from I Love Your Lovin' Ways but it narratively sets the melancholy on the horizon. Pared back the bittersweet to just longing and fear, internally and externally. "Unsteady and heady" Lilac Wine Break Down And Let It All Out Either Way I Lose

love love love

Love it!

The Queen.

so freaking grand

This album made me feel things. Not many albums make me stand still in the livingroom and “feel” upon the first time listening to it.

Sublime and smokey. 5 stars.

Koskettava ja läheinen soitto joka nostattaa korkealle

It's a journey

Beautiful ambiance.

This album is so good! From the first note to the last one it’s full of emotions.

An album so good as to cast doubt on other 5 star ratings. Sublime is often overused, but here, well, it is as properly descriptive as possible Darkly romantic, gossamer to muscular crescendos. This album, often one song will run the course of human emotion. There are albums and artists that reasonable people may disagree, but this one is not. A singular talent. An unarguable masterpiece. Fight me. Her piano playing is almost as great as her singing. Although it’s kind of silly to say, because they are one beautiful thing together. People often are their own best accompaniests for obvious reasons. Hendrix for example

Truly astounding. I actually think the songs songs being pulled from previous seasons is a strength of this album. The breadth and diversity of styles you hear in 40 minutes is incredible. Just greatness from start to finish.

What an amazing powerhouse. Awesome album. “Four Women” is haunting.

Enjoyed this a lot, Nina really shows a lot of versatility throughout the album. Sometimes her voice strays a bit, but that sort of adds to the appeal for me. 9/10

A delight to the senses, I’ll have what I’m having.

Legend

Unforgettable is an understatement when it comes to Nina Simone and Wild is the Wind. Regardless of it being compiled of cutting room floor material, this is Nina at her incendiary, visionary best, what with her stirring renditions of Lilac Wine, Break Down and Let it All Out, the title track and, of course, Four Women. One of the finest albums of Nina's career.

Wow. Her voice is incredible, and so full of emotion, it makes every song feel profound. Even the ones that were written for someone else - it's hard to imagine anyone doing them better than this. The first track was maybe my least favourite, and really didn't prepare me for what was coming - it was followed by Four Women, which pretty much made me stop what I was doing and pay attention. Fantastic.

A mesmerising work of art. Simone could do it all - here we are tapping along with I Love Your Loving Ways, absorbed and moved by the extraordinary and powerful Four Women, enchanted by the singing and playing on What More Can I Say? and that’s just the opening tracks. Throughout, Simone is romantic, defiant and charming. What a talent. What an artist.

didn’t know what to expect, and was one of the most beautiful sounding records i’ve listened to. could definitely see myself hosting a dinner and having this playing in the background or being at an old jazz bar and being enveloped by the rhythms and vocals

If this album consisted only of "Four Women" and nothing else it would still be a masterpiece.

8.5+/10. Beautiful album. Beautiful voice. So much sorrow and emotion packed into 40 minutes, what an album.

Personal stand out tracks include opener "I Love Your Lovin' Ways" and "That's All I Ask".

I find it a bit mad that this is the only Nina album on here, especially compared to some of the over exposed artists on this list. If you're struggling to get into this music, spend some time reading about Nina and her Civil Rights activism or watching interviews. All of that energy is channeled into the the lyrics as well as the vocal and piano performance.

- Cohesive album front to back - Feels like stepping in a Time Machine - Amazing vocals -Fresh sounding album

Stand outs: Lilac Wine, Four Women, Wild is the Wind

Jackson Pollock: Four Women (i.e. used for OJ - Jay Z) is amazing. What more can I say? is amazing. Lilac Wine and That's all I ask also slap hard. Break down and let it all out sort slowed the momentum not bad, but didn't speak to me. Best Tracks: Four Women What More Can I say? Lilac Wine That's All I Ask Worst Tracks: Overall: The start of this record is amazing. It goes good-great-great-great-great to start. There is a little bit of a slip with Break Down but it recovers fast. I think its like a 9.1, so a 5.

A gem. "Four Women", " Lilac Wine", "Break Down And Let it All Out", " Wild Is The Wind", "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair"... And all the other songs... Nina's performance, her arrangements, the range of emotions displayed... 5 stars, obviously. There is no coincidence here. When stellar performers and songwriters such as David Bowie or Jeff Buckley make legendary covers out of songs taken from the *same* LP, it means that this LP is a keeper. And this doesn't even take into account the way Simone influenced so many other artists through her *other* records... By the way... The mere fact that there is only *one* Nina Simone album in Dimery's list speaks volumes about its shortcomings. I get that no list like that can satisfy every listener out there, and I still think the *1001 Albums...* is a great tool to discover artists from the past. But when you manage to cram at least three frigging Aerosmith LPs in your list (the band I actually had to review right before *Wild Is The Wind*), the least you can do is get your sh*t together and include *Little Girl Blue*, *I Put A Spell On You* and *Pastel Blues* as well. I mean, seriously... It would be nice if new editors could refresh and/or update that list. Some of the choices made for the 21st century are already arguable, even if I understand a consensus is always harder to find for more recent albums. But when there are such huge gaps for the sixties, said flaws become unforgivable. Number of albums left to review: 577 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 202 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 97 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 126

(please come back to her if you're new and find it odd. For example go away and listen to SUGARMAN, and My Baby Just Cares for Me. Or read about her life and music. Shit she made it despite it all.) . Pure Nina. (YT MUSIC has 2 versions. The oink cover is better. Very different tracks so maybe a glitch?) From the first track opening, I am at a 5. I am at five at the last too. Such an intimate recording. Amazing despite having none of her greatest work...., (usually the quality isnt great for 69s live,as far as I know. Is this an) it's like sittig on stage between the instruments. She moves from playfyul carefree joy, with that 'smile' in her voice, to the breakup and slow heartbreak songs like at track2 where voice is pain, rendered beautiful, and then ... back to where ? Its lady sings the blues on this album, even Summertime is subdued, restrained. I know her for songs of joy. and here she is live, singing her pain, which was her life.,.. can you imagine being there to see it live? Nina is art. her life was pain. Ive listened to her SugarMan and My Baby Just Cares for Me 1000 times, but never this. amazed. they saved a taste fo her best, the redemption, for last. If you listen carefully to her highs on the last track (Fine and Mellow) , her voice is like a muted trumpet. Alright! ****(NB: the algo followed this one up with "Mad About You (Live at Koningin Elisabethzaal 2012) Hooverphonic With Orchestra Live 2012***** its all soaring troubles and strings. oh. mad about you....

Amazingly beautiful record, a new favorite for sure

What a voice!

An inspiration to so many, a tragic life, an icon. If this is your first time hearing Nina, go read her Wikipedia and watch "What Happened, Miss Simone?" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nina_Simone Loved this album.

"Wild Is The Wind" é um disco intenso e emocionante, que merece ser ouvido com toda a atenção e devoção que uma obra de arte como essa merece. Em "Four Women", Nina canta sobre as histórias de quatro mulheres negras, cada uma representando um estereótipo diferente. Ela nos leva em uma viagem pela história da discriminação racial, desde a escravidão até os dias atuais. É uma música poderosa que ainda ressoa hoje.

She’s amazing.

AMAZING!!!! black is the color of my true loves hair was my fave.

Amazing collection of songs on here. Bowie's version of the title track will never be beaten but it's great to hear where he got the whole thing from. Contrast with Break Down And Let It All Out which is as good as any Motown song of the era. Just excellent

I’m a little anxious about listening to today’s album. The last time I listened to a jazz icon (John Coltrane) I really disliked it, and I had a very different opinion to the vast majority. Nina Simone is certainly someone I have come across before, but I’ve never really put much focus into her music. Today, we’ll change that. Songs I already knew: None Favourites: Lilac Wine, Four Women My hesitancy was completely unfounded. This album was phenomenal, and I honestly can’t fault any of it. There are parts that I would consider to be more rock and roll than jazz (I Love Your Lovin’ Ways has guitar playing that, with some distortion, could easily be a Status Quo track). But this album really shines on the slower tracks. Lilac Wine actually took my breath away. I’m in the fortunate position where I can not relate to the singer’s position of having lost their love, but regardless it still had me choking up. I’d recommend that everybody listens to this. It is genuinely perfect.

Lovely voice, lovely songs - poignant, perfectly paced and just the right length. Just a wonderful record.

Nina provides the evening you didn’t know you needed here.

This album IS truth. Ms Simone sings with pain, with her heart Four Women is a heartbreaking story She was singing about things in 1966 that no one wanted to hear, but she did not care

Otroligt fin, stilla, pianodriven jazz. 'Lilac Wine', 'Break Down and Let It All Out', 'Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair' och 'If I Should Lose You' också otroliga. Bästa låt(ar): 'Four Women' och 'Wild Is the Wind'.

My god, this record is beautiful! So heartbreaking and soulful at the same time, amazing. A very consistent record with great instrumentation and performance of Nina. The production is great too, very well mixed. One of the most powerful records I've ever listened to! She was truly something special! Favorite lyrics: - It makes me see what I want to see. Be what I want to be. - But it's not enough just to remember, 'cause what good is the past? - With your kiss, my life begins. You're spring to me. All things to me. Key tracks: Four Women, What More Can I Say, Lilac Wine, Break Down And Let It All Out, Wild Is The Wind, Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair, If I Should Lose You. 9 out of 10

The spare arrangements complement her powerful voice on this bunch of torch songs. Fantastic.

My appreciation of Nina's music only grown through the years. She always delivers gutsy, soulful performances, her range is vast, and her overall approach to music is timeless. Plus, she's a hell of a pianist. It seems criminal to me that she only has one album on this list as her career is so varied and this collection of songs is not. Every song on here isn't of 5-star quality, but damn who cares. If you haven't heard Sinnerman or the live version of Pirate Jenny, do yourself a favor and check them out. Truly one of the greatest musicians of the last century.

wow that voice.

This is a quintessential Nina Simone album

What a voice!

listened to before: kind of favorite song (overall): break down and let it out strongest lyrics: four women best vocals: lilac wine best song (objective): wild is the wind pros: HER VOICE!! her range is just incredible. the lyricism is just top notch, especially four women. wild is the wind is a masterpiece cons: very few, i wish nina wrote more on this album because four women is incredible.

I don't have the language to explain how I feel about this album. I was entranced for almost 40 minutes.

This is gold, i think not all voices can convey as much emotion as Nina does. Her voice is gold, her band is gold, her lyrics are gold. She manages her tone so she can play with your feelings and emotions. Gold

Epic and intense. Truly a masterpiece. Angry and tender. Loved it.

I'm beginning to understand that Nina is the greatest ever female artist. Wine, sex and social issues all blend effortlessly together throughout this album - sometimes at the same time. The Wild is the Wind title track is overblown and bonkers. WHAT A WOMAN! This would be a six star album, if six were available. It's without a doubt the best record so far in almost a year of listening to an album a day on the 1001 generator site. I broke my usual £3 maximum online rule and picked up a CD for £6. Outstanding.

Album #: 16 (Listened after album 256) first impressions: I used to be very put off of her music because of her voice - it has a similar timbre as a family member who used to sing often around me, but whose voice I found jarringly unfeminine and harsh when I was younger. I still find it somewhat unpleasant, but I understand her importance and the sheer power and emotional force behind it. after listening through: this is nighttime music, this is heartache music, this is for adults. a gorgeous album; if these are her "scraps," I feel compelled to listen to her other works. The piano is also so lovely. post-reading reviews/wiki: Nina Simone was such a force and a unique talent. I hope there's more of her on the list but I just somehow *know* her other work was somehow less important than, any of the roughly 100 mopey white singer-songwriter albums on here.. recommended for: anyone looking to understand the work of serious (and sadly, much more famous/popular) performers who took inspiration from her (e.g., Jeff Buckley, David Bowie)

This is pretty gorgeous. It gave me goosebumps. Although I was familiar with some of her songs, I’ve now become quite fascinated with Nina Simone.

Absolutely stunning!

Overwhelmingly powerful and deeply expressive, Nina Simone is an incredible gift.

Really fantastic! This album had me from the opening strains of I Love Your Lovin' Ways. Some really haunting songs on this. They are right to feature Four Women on the cover. What a remarkable song. There are so many great songs on this. I’ve already listened to it over and over…

The High Priestess herself feels like such a orgotten gem these days. Her voice is so commanding and powerful, but can be softer than a breeze's whisper when it needs to be. And the arrangements here, all magnanimous!

I mean, simply put, this is beautiful.

Very powerful. Talented.

On the Fugees' Ready or Not, Lauryn Hill delivers the couplet, "And while you imitating Al Capone/ I'll be Nina Simone and defecating on your microphone." Is that the most charming image to use, Lauryn Hill unleashing a length of dirty spine onto a verbal opponent's microphone, in emulation of Nina Simone? Is that a truly reverential gesture towards Nina Simone, whom I assume Lauryn Hill means to extol? This is in no way the only instance of later artists invoking their soulful forebears in arguably crass manners. Beyoncé may be the Queen Bey of a new soul movement, but I can't recall Aretha Franklin or Diana Ross wearing outfits that hinted that they'd had Brazilians, nor them releasing a book like Madonna's that proved they hadn't. This addition of sexiness (and occasionally sleaziness) to the female vocalist equation often subtracts from the delicacy and emotional power that the best female soulsters can produce. Sexual availability is in no way the same as sexual expertise (if you're so good at it, why are you devoting so much to advertising it?). I'm in no way prudish, but soon an aspirant RnB diva will use the word "pissflaps" in a romantic ballad, and I don't really see that as progress. So today we shall return to one of the pioneers of soul, the High Priestess, Nina Simone: prodigious, accomplished, difficult, uncompromising, dead. A just summary of her life and her artistry would be beyond the scope of this review, and in any case listing her most divalike behaviour strikes me as a rather tabloid exercise, so let's focus on this album. Wild is the Wind is an assemblage of tracks recorded from earlier sessions, and is thus essentially a showcase for Nina Simone's performances rather than a unified body of music. And as a showcase, it is frankly astonishing. For such showcases to work, the artist in question has to occupy a rarefied plane (Hendrix's Are You Experienced?, at its root a demonstration that he could play the guitar quite well, is a paradigm of this), and Nina Simone's plane is so lofty that only the birds can reach her. Wild is the Wind has Nina Simone displaying not only the depths of her passion, but the breadth of her command. Not one note, one sentiment is mishandled here. Wild is the Wind includes some fun, upbeat tracks (I Love Your Loving Ways is quite the R&B stomper), but it's the slow numbers that really pierce the heart: desolate, charged, forceful, crippling, and I was in tears by the end. As I said, Nina Simone was highly prolific, and I'm not an authority to say whether this is her best album. However, if she has a better album than this, then how great must that be? Anyway, this album is a masterpiece, and she didn't need to pose in a bikini for it, did she? NoRadio, signing off.

5 Imagine that two of the songs on this album is already on my top 5 list.

she's amazing.

5 Jazz Soul and blues

This nina Simone album was a million times better I really loved it

Beautiful

Nina Simone is perfection. I learned that one of my favorite songs, Wild is The Wind is a Nina Simone tune & not a David Bowie original. I've listened to Bowie's Station to Station dozens of times & always take a reflective pause at the song. It's hauntingly beautiful - just like much of Nina's work. I ended up listening to hours of her music. She's incredible.

Kind of perfect for the dreary, early winter atmosphere in which I commuted to work. It both complemented and served as an antidote to that atmosphere, sometimes within the same song. HL: “What More Can I Say”, “Lilac Wine”, the title track

One of those albums that I have known, all my life, is meant to be an album you should listen to, bit that I've never got round to. I knew a few of the songs because I have ears (and because Jeff Buckley covered one of them). But yes, this is greates of all time tier. Her voice. Taking incredible subject matter as slavery and delivering it with such controlled rage that it is pitch perfect and you come away feeling the injustice. The more traditional heartbreak. Wow.

Nina Simone This album is so good. It has so much range and each song is great in different ways. Her vocals on the ballads is my favorite she takes us on such a journey. I hadn’t heard most of this album- I’ll definitely have to go back for some deeper listening.

Wasn’t super familiar with this whole album but there are some legendary songs on here. Her playing, singing and songwriting are top tier, she is truly unique and such an important part of American musical history.

Somehow all my notes got lost from this but I listened to this album 4 times. What a masterpiece.

Nina Simone is flawless, powerful, confrontational, amazing. Everything she touches turns to gold. Four Women knocked me over, and Lilac Wine is of course fantastic. Break Down is a fantastic song I don't think I had ever focused on before and it's a new favorite. My only minor criticism of this album is that it's an odd assortment of songs and doesn't feel cohesive. But with Nina this almost seems like a positive thing - she really keeps you unsettled and guessing here. 5/5

A delight from beginning to end, this makes listening to all that mid music worth it. Sublime piano on a couple of these songs

An album full of emotions, a point of reference.

È Nina Simone, dopotutto. Si parte da 5 in su.

Amazing

I had listened to some Nina Simone before and loved it, but a couple of the tracks on here were new to me. Particularly the opening blues number. She’s so amazing

Simone's voice is incredible as always, and this is one of her strongest collections of songs. An absolute pleasure to listen to

I can't believe I've never sat down and listened to Nina Simone before! Such a powerful and haunting voice. Another instant 5. *Chef's kiss*

WOW!!! Amazing

Excellent

Tears. Literally so beautiful

This was a great album. Nina Simone has a lot of variety to provide in her artistry

5 stars. Beautiful album. I want the vinyl

I got absolutely lost in this. Wonderful.

Great artist, great album

This was very enjoyable to listen to, and really match the vibe of a rainy morning. Nina’s voice is something else.

Amazing voice

Sad, soulful, deep, and somewhat alien. Would listen again.

One of the few perfect albums. All the emotions behind each of these songs still resonate today.

Three stars for Lilac Wine alone. The chords, my god, and her yearning voice... Another each for Black is the Color and Four Women. One more for Wild is the Wind and If I Should Lose You. That's six stars... the other tracks could be pigs squealing (but they're not) and we'd still have an absolute juggernaut.

Heard before: no Absolutely awesome. Favourite Tracks: Four Women, Lilac Wine

5.0 - What a treasure. So many show-stopping moments on here, from the storytelling on "Four Women" to the intricate piano on "If I Should Lose You" to the vocal bass on "Either Way I Lose." Each song sounds like a classic. Binding it all together is Simone's unmatched chameleonic voice that can equally convey loving tenderness ("Black Is The Color..."), vitriol ("Four Women") and vicious defiance ("Break Down..."). I've been searching for an entry point to Nina Simeone, and I've finally found it.

One of the few perfect albums.

Yeah, this is fantastic. I'm embarrassed to say I don't think I even knew the name Nina Simone until I saw her on The Big Lebowski soundtrack. And she's from North Carolina! Facepalm. There are one of a kind voices and then there's this. Thank God the tunes are there to back it up, as well, which is exactly what that voice deserves. "Either Way I Lose" is a stunning closer. Off to a good start this week!!

Powerful stuff, enjoyed every moment

Lovely, emotional and smooth. Nina Simone is one of those artists who's influence is wide-spanning. This album is near damn-perfect. 4.75/5.

Four Women is indeed unforgettable. What More Can I Say is a soaring ballad, though its place on the tracklist is strange. The Lilac Wine cover is excellent. Why Keep On Breaking My Heart is Nina showing off. Wild Is The Wind is very nice. Great Album!

Four Women deserves an Academy Award period. Black is the colour of my true love's hair is so tranquil and heartbreaking This album flows well together and you can tell that the lyricism is something she's not trying to force I don't think this is an album I can repeat and I have some skips but I will definitely warm up to it soon because she's an icon

Love her!

Beautiful especially lilac wine

A lovely album, great cover of the title song

Gorgeous vocals and piano as usual from Nina. She’s just fantastic.

Great soul

Wow Nina is toch next level hoor! - Jayz

The wonderful Ms Simone. First became aware of her in the early 80's when a girlfriend introduced me to "My Baby Just Cares For Me" before it was a hit due to the Chanel No 5 advert! Her voice is visceral and speaks loudly of her struggles and battles with her mental health. I love these songs "Four Women" and "Wild Is The Wind" (Which I think is, at least as good as Bowies interpretation) are my favourite tracks. A good choice for this list I think.

How does one woman kick so much ass?

This is just so stunningly good, a powerful album in every way. The album is a brief 39 minutes, but it's so rich and soulful. It feels more substantial than anything you could fit in 39 minutes, and yet not nearly long enough. I'm still turning over in my mind the fact that this album is comprised of leftover songs (!) from previous albums. Nina Simone's leftovers outshine the best songs of other artists. Fave Songs (All songs, in order from most to least favorite): Wild Is the Wind, Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair, Four Women, If I Should Lose You, What More Can I Say, Why Keep On Breaking My Heart, Lilac Wine, Either Way I Lose, I Love Your Lovin' Ways, That's All I Ask, Break Down and Let It All Out

I’m screaming

Wantlist

Ooh 'Nina Simone' on seeing this come up became very 'oh wow' when you stop and take on tunes like 'Four Women'. She's truly unique, and truly special.

Lindão demais!!!

phenomenal album, every song is so beautiful and moving, hitting in a totally different way what an incredible way to spend 40 minutes, please listen to this spectacular, 10/10 album

Brilliant.

This is good enough to keep my comments on me and just give it 5 stars

Super!

Beautiful music. Great blues as always from Nina.

Maravilhoso! Delicado e vigoroso.

Gorgeous jazz album. Loved hearing rap samples lol. You can hear the influence on r&b and pop ballads moving forward.

genial!

An incredible album. The voice. Dr Simone’s vocals are spellbinding. So crisp, clear and distinctive. A true milestone. And so far ahead of it’s time. Top tracks: Four Women, What more can I say?

A no brainer!! Musical genius, the most uniquely perfect voice, a journey of an album. I really experienced the album, listened to it a bunch of times. Absolute perfection!!!

Like being a 7 year old on a long ride with me dad again. Good shit here.

Beautiful voice. Magically odd collection of songs. Highly influential tracks, often sampled in modern pop/hip hop.

ta bonito. um classico

I see we're moving the emotional devastation to a Tuesday instead. What a powerful album, and Four Women will surely stay with me for a very long time.

lovely!

Strong from start to finish. A lot of soul and emotion in the songs. 5/5

Utterly glorious

Amazing voice. Real mix of Sykes in the songs as well.

Ah yeahhh. Nina is my girl!

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Love some Nina

Great album.

Gorgeous, beautiful, emotional musicianship. Why have I never heard of this?

Not into jazz

Beautiful!

What More Can I Say?

Esa voz...

god bless nina simone's voice

Zo een prachtig album. Puur genieten gewoon.

Mood: She put a spell on me

Lots of soul

Menuda voz tiene la hija de puta

Nina rarely disappoints! I had not heard of this album and thoroughly enjoyed listening to her cover versions.

Excelente. Su voz, su vibración... su sentimiento. Gracias por la recomendación.

nina simone nina simone nina simone nina simone nina simone nina simone nina simone nina simone 9/10

Canciones fav: "Four Women" (¡ese final!), "Break Down and Let It All Out", "Either Way I Lose" y obvio ese clásico que es "Wild Is The Wind". Tqm, Nina. 10/10

Wonderful

Get it up ye

Nina Simone classic bluesy jazz. transported to a different place. easy listening warmth.

love you nina

I mean, Nina.

Every track is a banger.

Fantastic album, haven't really listened to Nina Simone before but thought this album was great.

truly amazing classic jazz record

Start off energetic, then the next song is slow and gentle, a soothing sound but with lyricists that are not sugar-coating the pain. This continues into the rest of the album. stars 4/5 Would I listen once again? No, just because my taste are different, but all the songs are convaying something powerfull.

The songs resonated with me, specially the songs about broken hearts And also the loving songs

The intersection where jazz lounge singer meets Motown and Stax. Her voice is great and most of the songs are of a high quality, it doesn’t have a Sinnerman on there but there are quite a few tunes that seem instantly familiar. 3.8

A really nice listen. What a voice. Beautiful, understated delivery. Not my usual genre but I will definitely listen to this again.

Wild is the wind is a good title!

A very solid easy listen with some really great songs.

I like it much more than I thought I would. 4

Beautiful and melancholy. Songs that speak volumes even when there's little sung.

Great vocals, instrumental was incredible as well. Jazz isnt normally my Jam, but I still heabily enjoyed it

I Love Your Lovin' Ways - 3.5/5 Four Women - 4.5/5 What More Can I Say - 4/5 Lilac Wine - 4/5 That's All I Ask - 4/5 Break Down and Let It All Out - 4/5 Why Keep On Breaking My Heart - 3.5/5 Wild is the Wind - 4/5 Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair - 4/5 If I Should Lose You - 3.5/5 Either Way I Lose - 3.5/5 Nina Simone sits you down and makes you listen to the struggles of black women in the 60s, and you will end up enjoying the intimate performance. Four Women is the standout track of both this album's theme and from the album in general, though the rest of the album is soulful thanks to Simone's powerful voice. While cabaret-style musical isn't usually for me, she makes me stick around for the more middle-of-the-road songs enough for me to enjoy the whole piece. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: Four Women

THIS SHIT IS SO FUCKING SILKY SPIDERS DREAM OF MAKING THEIR WEB FROM NINA SIMONE'S VOICE

a singular voice, to be sure. kind of all over the board, but i like it. and it makes sense having read that it is comprised out "scraps" of other sessions. i have seen the "what happened, miss simone?" doc, and have heard her songs throughout the years, but this the first full album.

Nina's powerful vocals are a perfect match for the messages in these songs. 3.5/5

Það er bara alltaf töff að hlusta á Nínu

Ah ! Le sample de jay z ! L’influence de mitsky sur that’q all I ask Je suis étonné que l’album ne se termine pas sur « Wild is the wind » qui serait une chanson de conclusion parfaite

Pretty cool. Very nice voice.

Great first song, blues, fun and easy to listen to Second song, messagy, not something I'd want to listen to more than once Third song, sweet, smooth Lots to enjoy on this album. Some of it seems driven by making cultural statements while other songs feel more driven by the music.

Timeless authority.

I love her voice and the use of dynamics on this record

What a singer

Beautiful voice

Pure alchemy, converting a bunch of music into pure emotions. Boy can she interpret a song. 4*

Nice album

crazy vocals

Bonito.

Phenomenal voice

Filled with soul

Why Keep On Breaking My Heart funker heller ikke for meg. What the fuck...!

viiiiibes

certainly a vibe she has so much depth in that voice it makes you travel in time

Nice, Lilac Wine, masterpiece.

Probably a cliche to say at this point, but it's a very eclectic mix of jazz, blues, soul, and a lot of songs that walk the line between each. And some songs that don't fit into any category. I went in expecting almost jazzy background music, but I had to listen to it a second time because I needed to give it more attention. Probably not an every day album, but a powerful one when you're in the right mood.

Just because of lilac wine

5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Four Women hits pretty hard.

Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Misogyny Anthem.

A master at work, with the band locked right in. Effortless but still clear how skilled she is

The highs on this album are very, very high. Four Women is incredible, and Lilac Wine made Jeff Buckleys version feel hollow - Buckley performed it but Simone LIVES it.

beautiful

i love nina simone. soully jazz with her characteristic voice. i loved the album

Very good album by Nina. Love everything done by her, actually. One of the greatest artists ever.

yh it’s alr for a really tired or a calm mood, just to relax and focus on good melody

I have never listened to Nina Simone besides her hit songs. She is SO GOOD. The first two songs in this album are gems (I Love Your Lovin’ Ways and Four Women) that made me want to straighten my spine and go out into the world and cause trouble. I felt so empowered! I’m so pleasantly surprised at how much I loved this and how comforted I felt by it.

so much emotion in this record. musically, it's great but not a style I would listen to were it not for Nina Simone who carries such raw strength. Each syllable has something going on. Four Women is a powerhouse of a song. 8 / 10 Best track/s: Break Down And Let It All Out, Four Women, Lilac Wine

felt like a conversation in a way.

I like nina simone and jazz in general but this i like things that are harder

Nina all day long not my favorite album but always

Soulful, powerful and full of storytelling, poetry and raw emotion. While it's not my favourite project, I respect the skill that Nina brings throughout this album.

Just an absolute powerhouse of a singer. I wouldn't count her as having a "great" voice, but the gravitas through which she sings is something that remarkably few people have. Such a strong, confident sound that is infectious.

Not my usually place to be, but my what a beautiful time I had. In the right headspace, I'd lean closer to 5.

Aivan ihania hitaita jazz ballaadeja. Todella kauniita. Suorastaan sulan Nina Simonen äänelle.

Wow this is the kind of album this project is for. I don't think I had ever listened to her before, but she has a beautiful voice and the album as a whole is a winner, great piano.

What a voice! Flex those golden pipes Nina!

I don't usually listen to albums this. Usually more into jazz albums more focused on instruments. I recognize the talent that went into it and think that the album is pretty special. However, I don't see myself re-visiting soon unless there's a real certain occasion that it would make for some perfect background music. My issue with that is that it's a lot more than background music. I really do think it's a great album but from a more casual-listening perspective, I can't give it 5 stars. 7/10 Favorite song: I Love Your Lovin' Ways

Frankly, that was beautiful. Love Nina Simone's voice and style of cadence. She's also killing on keys, fits right in with, well, her own quartet. While a lot of the songs (all but one) aren't written by her, the interpretations are very nice. Sometimes airy like on What More Can I Say and Wild is the Wind, sometimes groovy like on Why Keep On Breaking My Heart. Pretty easy 4.

Nina Simone, from "I Love You Porgy", made me think that she and her music were the next evolutionary step up from Billie Holliday, and for that alone, I really appreciated it. Her voice blends perfectly with her piano playing, to which I understand she became a virtuoso and got her start playing by ear aged 3 and up. Huge respect. Also a shoutout to Ella Fitzgerald for her gorgeous performance on "My Funny Valentine", too. Despite this praise, the album was a little long in the tooth and variation was lacking enough to lose my interest in places; when I am checking 'how many tracks am I from the end' it's never a good sign. Favourite tracks were: "My Baby Just Cares For Me", "I Love You Porgy", "Good Bait", "Love Me or Leave Me", "Plain Gold Ring", "Summertime", "My Funny Valentine", "Mood Indigo", "Exactly Like You" and "He Needs Me"

Wow. Both great, classic Motown sounds (first track)), as well as some haunting, emotional tracks (Lilac Wine and Four Women are top notch). And Nina’s voice is so cool.

4/5 ✱✱✱✱ I love your lovin' ways - Four women - perfeita (jay-z usou sample em 4:44), com ativismo e retrato social what more can i say? - profundidade e melancolia com a banda fazendo a ambiencia Lilac Wine - Letra de James Shelton - melancolia Break down and let it all out - força, grandiosidade - percussão ditando o ritmo Why keep on breaking my heart - voz e guitarra Bennie Benjamin - com uma introdução baixa porém poderosa, que cresce com a percussão, com um violino contraponto o ritmo. Wild is the wind - força e ritmo do piano, com pratos ditando o ritmo e a voz potente na primeira metade da música. Bateria e teclado encerram com perfeição. Either Way I Lose - percussão e trombone trazem a atmosfera para a musica.

Lo amé. Revelador e íntimo.

Didn’t quite make it through it.
