Reviews (page 11 of 14)

Ganske bra, litt slitsom i lengden. Men avslutter med en klassiker.

2-3 et sted. Noen gode opplevelser, kanskje mest The End. Typisk album som er stort i sin tid. Hadde ikke anledning til å grave meg ned i tekster. Tenkte mye på Disintegrate av Suede

"The Doors had no bass. The Gypsies had no homes. Don't let that scare you—let that free you."

3.5 Stars. Some classics!

Solid debut album. I had a grand time when I wasn’t paying attention to the creepy little girl lyrics. 3.5/5

Second time listening to The Doors. This one’s kind of overhyped, but it could be that I don’t actually like The Doors. Jury’s still out.

The Doors are kind of hit or miss for me. I love a few songs on this album, Light My Fire is fantastic. However outside of those few bangers it just doesn't do it for me.

A lot of these songs sound the same. I don't hate it, but I also would not seek it out to listen to on purpose. And what was that line about eating chicken?

It’s a solid album, sound considered classic at this point, a lot of wisdom and fresh perspectives for the time of the release. A lot of spiritualism and drugs 😅

one of the rare albums that has a perfect beginning, middle and end track. still giving it a 3.

Never listened to the whole album before, but it's not bad. I think my rating really just comes down to the fact that I find Jim Morrison annoying. Musically, the album is really good. Feels of it's time, but some songs do feel current.

As I’ve grown older, I find myself liking the Doors less. All of their non-Blues songs just aren’t that interesting to me.

Good background music i guess

The highs are insanely high, but the album as a whole is not my favorite.

The lyrics on these songs are simply not good. At all. The instrumentation is fun, though.

Again not bad but far too much organ noodling for my taste! Done solid doings but also a lot of dross. Has the ability but must try harder.

I was expecting worse because my only memory of The Doors includes “LA Woman” which I did not enjoy. This was pretty good.

First heard Break on Through in Tony Hawk Pro Skater and although the Doors have been an influential band, I feel that the hallucinogenics probably was a big factor in their success.

Had some vibey songs for sure, Jim Morrison's waxing poetic at times was great, and then sometimes was frustrating to hear because the backing track wasn't being done justice. Favorite song: Back Door Man

Not bad

Bom e só. Algumas músicas sensacionais, outras esqueciveis.

2nd Doors’ album I believe. Very ‘60s and very Doors.

Just kinda don't love it. Idk, respect them but can't really get into any of the songs.

The album gives me a feel of "The rolling stones" while still being original, the keyboard in most of the tracks also make the album a bit more interesting. My grandparents would rock to this shit, but it is from 1967, so i'll cut it some slack.. (Keyboard sounds like an old church altar) (But the guitar solos on the album are kinda cool) (Singer kinda sounds like the singer from "The Cramps" mixed with Elvis) Ending track was 11 minutes.. my opinion Best song: (Twentieth Century Fox) Worst song: (The Crystal Ship) 3/5

I mean I don’t know. whatever. who cares at this point

Paul McCartney wannabe

It's mega fans of The Doors and Jim Morrison that have ruined much of this for me. I'm trying really hard to listen to this and not think of the fans. But good grief the "Alabama Song" is terrible, it sounds like shitty circus music.

Yea, it's fine. Heard a lot of these songs hundreds of times so they don't really excite me any more. It's not as good as Madvillainy.

6,5/10

Didn't listen. I just had The Doors a few days ago and I wasn't in the mood. I'm sure it's great. Also, I'm sure I owned this at one point. 3.5

Singers voice is weird

I always found Jim Morrison so corny and I can’t get Val Kilmer’s over-the-top performance as him out of my head. This is also the album of theirs that has the most songs I’ve heard so many times I never need to hear them again. Musically I dig it but The Doors are just not top tier 60’s rock to me barring a few ATJs

Honestly, I fucking hate the doors. Getting that out of the way, I can respect how so many people in the late 60s loved this music. It's fine.

My karma must be way out of wack. If I get Boston in the next week I’m gonna do something drastic. Milketoast is not my preferred genre of music. Cultural significance in a pop sense I’ll allow it. Just barely 3.8

Alabama song is incredibly grating. In fact, the whole second half of the album is less than stellar.

Should The End reeeeaally take so long to get to the end?

The Doors are fun when Jim keeps his Lizard King shit under wraps. He's courteous enough to spill it all out with the last track, "The End". The Jesus Man still can't resist giving us a "back door man" song (nudge nudge wink wink). They're highly overrated but they did make some fun songs and this album has a few snappy tracks.

Quite something for a debut, but not for me. 3.

Keyboard solos for dayyysss

a rendition of a Kurt Weill / Bertolt Brecht song is always a good thing to see, and of course Light my Fire and The End are insane psych rock songs. but otherwise the drug addled, CIA funded story of The Doors is a lot more interesting than the actual music. but this is one of their better moments deserves to be one of the 1001? too important to leave off, it needs to be included

Mmm, one of those classic rock bands that I think are too overrated in today’s day & age. A couple of great singles but no care for the album tracks.

Not massively for me but I appreciate the influence. Still a couple of bangers. Probably better after a zoot.

Very typical 60's sounding psychedelic rock that defined that genre in that era

I've never been a huge fan of The Doors, but it's pretty clear this is their magnum opus. And obviously a strong debut album. Their trademark organ used on essentially every track gives it a psychedelic bluesy feel.

3- pretty average but a few good bangers

No one is more surprised than I am. Maybe it’s the ankle fracture and pain meds talking, because what?! This was actually really good in parts. First full listen of this album, and dare I say… I enjoyed The Doors? Two songs I’d never heard before absolutely stole the show: The Crystal Ship is a shimmering ★★★★. And then out of nowhere, Take It As It Comes dropped with full five-star energy. Consider my mind blown.

1. Break on Through (to the Other Side) - 2.5 2. Soul Kitchen - 2.5 3. The Crystal Ship - 3.0 4. Twentieth Century Fox - 3.0 5. Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) - 2.5 6. Light My Fire - 3.5 7. Back Door Man - 2.5 8. I Looked at You - 2.5 9. End of the Night - 2.5 10. Take it as it Comes - 3.0 11. The End - 2.5

Solid listen.

Pretty funky and embodies the 60s sound pretty much the whole album. I like and definitely see the cultural significance but I don’t know how much of it is my vibe. I definitely will be returning so maybe my mind will change.

Overall pretty neutral on this one. There were some parts that I liked but I found some songs to be a bit boring.

An interesting soundscape but I don’t really like Jim Morrisons vocals Also listen to Jose Felicianos cover of “Light My Fire”

I liked the keyboard. Album did not seem cohesive

the 11 minute song felt a little excessive but overall the album was enjoyable, particularly enjoyed 20th century fox and light my fire

High 3, but not quite a 4

Great! Not in love, definitely good. Just not my cup of tea.

all 60s rock lowkey sounds the same but it was enjoyable background noise.

Musically brilliant but I get irritated by Morrison’s vocal stylings.

Not a 3 but better than a 2

I wanted to like this album more than I did. Not that it's bad, at all, I guess I just hyped it up in my head. I really enjoyed a few of the songs, but most felt really expressive and interesting in a way that wasn't really something I can listen to again; absolutely insane that this album is from 1967. Very excited to listen to more of The Doors, I want to be a fan. Favorite songs: Break on Through (To the Other Side) Twentieth Century Fox Light My Fire Back Door Man

The Doors were the cool band that split up before we were born of the 80s. It's alright.

Alright.

I would have given this four stars, because I really do like some of these songs (although they're extremely out of fashion), but The End may be the single worst track ever included on a major label release.

Songs ranging from terrible to great

Torn how to rate this album for sure. Musically I really enjoy most of the album. I think now that I have listened to a couple of their albums I can definitely say their lyrics and the vocals are less my thing. Morrison’s voice works well in spots, but overall I'm not a fan and get tired of it quickly. Stuck between a 3 and a 4 for this because what is good is really good to me, but overall I can't say I would look forward to listening to this again. Ultimately I think I fall a bit on thinking this album is overrated which inclines me to shift towards the 3.

I probably should like this more than I do. I can only really say I like the singles and The End goes on a bit. I can see the appeal but wouldn't put it on out of choice

Not a bad album, but it shows me that I prefer the doors 3-4 years after this. It seems like they were more caught up in that classic sound of the 60s with this one. They were able to “break on through to the other side” for lack of a better term in the years following. The meandering organ music doesn’t do much for me.

Have always felt the Doors to be quite a bit on the overrated side. This album has some interesting moments, but still nothing I would prefer. 3/5

think the Doors are the most over rated band ever, but this wasn't that bad

When Robbie Krieger's snakey Byzantine SG leads, Ray Manzarek's swirling organ take center stage, and Jim Morrison shuts the fuck up and they're actually a decent blues psych band with the classic 60s California sound. The trouble is he rarely does since he's constantly wailing on and on about little girls.

Loved it

Hits like I would expect. I am sure this was impactful on the genre, but I don't think I would relisten.

My second Doors album, and I definitely preferred it to Morrison Hotel. I'm still a bit on the fence about the Doors (love Break On Through, think The End is a pretentious dirge, reckon Light My Fire gets covered so often because people realised it was a great pop song struggling to break free of the unnecessarily long organ solo), but I can at least understand what other people see in them based on this one.

Psychedelic. Good, would listen again, but perhaps not for a while?

My first experience with this album was at my first job. I was working retail at a folf course pro shop, and the owners wife came in to drop off some products and arrange some displays. She found this album in a pile of cd's by a boombox and put it in, within 30 seconds of Break on Through she flipped out and unplugged the whole machine sighing "UGH DRUGGIE MUSIC", she played Brenda Lee later on. Its fine, 60's psychadelic rock isnt my thing but there is some good, Break on Through being the standout, but a lot of it just falls flat and is a chore to get through. Also the keyboard tones are pretty obnoxious.

Still not Wild about the doors but Break On Through is pretty catchy. Whisky Bar is AWFUL though!

So much of this is old hat, but a little bit of it really hits. The circus-y/creepy nonsense ("Alabama Song") and the sleaze ("The End" "Twentieth Century Fox" ) are a total lead balloon. But when its rock and keyboards, I like it. I'm surprised it made it up to 3, even though the songs of theirs I like the most ("Roadside Blues") are pretty great.

not my kind of music but don’t think alot of this will be liked it quite a lot like 6/10 added one of the songs to liked songs and after the album finishes people are strange came on and turns out they wrote it banger btw nd somehow it wasn’t in my liked songs so yk i had to add it heavy rate this album probs wld listen more if i was born 60 years before but yk oh well

iconic, perhaps a victim of nostalgia bias, but there are still a lot of songs that hold up

Good album overall. Not as energetic as I picture old rock to be. Almost hiphopy. I guess music of today has been influenced by this. Overall just a great listen. Some catchy songs and riffs and some songs that just bring the overall tune of the album.

Partly listened. Quite cool, but not for me.

Dad rock

Doors might be over rated

Liked this album 30 years ago. Some good tracks but also some not so good tracks

I loved this when I was I kid. Not so much now, but there's still great stuff on this album.

6.8/10

I've heard great things about this album, but for me, while being enjoyable, it simply wasn't all that memorable.

i liked this more than the previous (1980's) album. but i'm not that into this time period (1960's) either.

I’d listened to the album before, naturally. But boy is it short. Short and sweet, production sucks though

/100 Sam: 69/100 Katie:Production hasn't held up to time very well and pacing/lay out of the album is a little weird. Some songs are solid and boundary pushing but others fell a lil flat. Top Songs: Break on Through, Backdoor Man, Light My Fire

Good album. Couple of hits.

good listen, some bangers, some strange jamming out nonsense.

I still don’t care for The Doors, but this is definitely their best album. Favorite songs were Break On Through, Soul Kitchen, and Light My Fire.

Nice album with some iconic tracks, but it’s not exactly my cup of tea. While I can appreciate the unique sound and vibe, it doesn’t quite resonate with me the way I hoped it would. It’s a solid listen, but I’m not rushing to play it on repeat!

3 out of 5. Solid end to a full week of rock albums. Overall I feel just ok about The Doors as a whole though some of their instrumentation did blow me away.

marginally better than their other albums. i still dont get it tho

Fine. Bit whiny

Nice, bit of a dated feel to it though.

OK, here goes. I never really liked or got The Doors (and was once put in a headlock by a 14 year old classmate to prove just how wrong I was - everybody knows *that* kids right?) Morrison's voice always just annoyed me and the songs felt so tepid. The tracks you instantly think of are all here, so definitely some kudos for them all coming on debut and Apocalypse Now means I view |"The End" in a different light now. Plus I question how much I was turned-off them, because they were a band you were *supposed* to like?

can’t make me like the doors

Several classics here. Personally, I prefer Doors songs in ones or twos—their sound is so distinct. Touch Me is welcome whenever.

“the end” is mostly a pretty bad song. there, i said it.

It was alright. Just alright. To me, a very overrated album. Not bad by any means, but definitely an insane slog, especially after Light My Fire. And don't even get me started on The End. Overall, a fine enough album but not a lyrical masterpiece or anything. Rating:6.1/10

It’s not bad but not great. On this site it’s better than most other albums we got lowk

decent. Fav Track: Soul Kitchen, Light My Fire

SO much organ!!! But some pretty good songwriting and suits Jim Morrison's (very weird) voice well

They say The Doors were ahead of their time. I was born in 1988, and this album sounds like it could still play on a weird alternative radio station. I'm not sure if that makes it good or not.

The Doors have never sat in my mind as a band that fit nicely into the musical landscape of the '60s. Often, they just kind seem to me like a good bluesy psychedelic rock band, but they have some songs where their kind of obscure mystical image seeps a little deeper into their music and they get pushed into being one of the most interesting bands of the '60s. That's kind of how this album feels to me in a nutshell, we have a good current of bluesy rock here that is occasionally put into overdrive. These songs define this album to me: Break On Through has some real momentum to it, Light My Fire is allowed to grow into something greater than its pop appeal and End of the Night sounds woozy and disorienting. Of course, The End is the centerpiece of this album. It really feels like The Doors tap into something dark and esoteric here. Jim Morrison's vocal performance is incredibly dynamic, and the song's release of its slow building intensity is one of '60s rock's defining moments, in its own strange way. Overall, while I understand the importance of this, its underlying blues rock aesthetic only does so much for me, but every once in a while something here is truly fascinating to me. Read this score as a pretty high 3.

a really good album! something i feel like i can only really listen to in fall, though.

I thought this was actually pretty decent and a good, if dated, rock and roll album. It’s up and down but running through the middle of it is some decent guitar and drums and a variety of sounds. Probably a 4 for the most part but knocked a mark off for some grating songs.

The music is a bit too dated for my liking. I still enjoyed some of the songs. Just not the music I'd listen to on loop.

A few good tracks, but some are boring.

Fairly middle of the road, and found all of the songs merging together. I can usually handle quite a bit of noodling around but had to skip a few.

Some all time tracks, gets psychedelic in the middle culminating in The End.

What's your favourite Doors album? The Best of The Doors. Not quite enough here to break on through, so to speak.

The End is brilliant but the rest didn’t really jump out at me

Never listened to the whole of The END in it's entirety - don't think I ever will again. The jingle jangly bits are always nice on a sunny day.

For four solid decades I've been expected to love this music. It's fine. A few great hooks. But so much pretentious silliness. And that Continental Vox. C'mon Ray; there's a reason no one else made it a staple of their sound.

Morrison was a weird dude

Not bad, the Doors are good in small doses, but admittedly an entire album just gets repetitive.

This kind of sputtered out for me after a great start with “break on through to the other side.” Other than the starter, nothing really stood out as particularly inspiring to me. I had high hopes and was a little disappointed

This is a weird one because I've been negative to music like this SEVERAL times in the past, but I still kind of enjoyed this. Ew! Slow psych rock! Acoustics? What happened to my electric guitars and keyboards and synths? I want Pink Floyd back! It's still not amazing, and I don't know if I'll come back to any of this... Ever. But I liked it more than I should have, which is what an album from a foreign genre should do. Favs: Light My Fire, Back Door Man, End of the Night Least fav: Twentieth Century Fox 7/10

Somehow I have no comments to make? Which is a surefire 3

Good stuff. I respect their vibe and importance, but I'm not sure many of these will make it in to the rotation

Album art:2

ja tof hoor, die deuren favo: soul kitchen varia: orgeldeuntjes voor extra plezier

Enough has been said about this album. RIP Val Kilmer.

its giving me music rather surface level

it was alright

Not my style

enjoying this much more than I did as a teen, which is probably the last time I listened to the Doors (apart from their hits appearing in movies, shows, commercials, etc.). Some of it's still not really hitting for me though. Was never a fan of Alabama Song and it's still falling flat, for instance.

The big songs are all great, the lesser ones are not filler either. Great album. Light my Fire and The End as the highlights.

Obviously a classic - amazing as a debut album and truly a unique sound... Sometimes the "quirkyness" can be a distraction from the overall enjoyment of the otherwise great songs.

They have an undeniably unique sound

The hits are hits and the rest are forgettable. 1/3 of the album is one song.

The Good: Straightforward song naming; the last one on the album is called “The End”! The Bad: Yes, a self-titled album, and it’s a freshmen endeavor! The Ugly: It seems like the ‘60s are giving the 00’s a run for their money… I was excited to see this album pop up, especially considering that I have already had to sit through 2 The Doors albums and I was craving Break on Through… So yeah, three massive songs, escorted along by several songs I, quite frankly, never need to hear again… Does this album belong on the list: YES! Will this album get plenty of replay by me: NO!!! 3*

[6/10]

Listened to this while paddle boarding. I wanted to like this more than I did. Light My Fire was too long and self indulgent but the rest of the album I didn’t dislike. Felt it showed it’s age a bit but they did alright them doors

3/5. 2/5 until I got to the last song, which is close enough to "Methodrone" that the whole album gets 1 more points.

It’s not my favorite Doors album but there are some highlights and some classics, as well as some songs that just seem to drone on past their welcome.

hmmm so many thoughts about this one.. i understand that the doors r a classic and influential band but this is the thrid(?) doors album out of <200 songs total? must we listen to every single doors album? but then again every single doors album is still preferable to some of this other stuff so i really can’t complain too much. ending the album with a 12-minute song called the end was funny but 12 minutes long smh. “kam on beybi layt may fayur” -my dad

The Doors, 1 of the more polarising bands of not just the 60’s. Particularly Morrison. For me they aren’t as good as the hype, but not as bad as the haters. The highs are really good, classics but the lows are very much filler. And if you don’t love Morrison and his act, he does appear to be something of a knob. Letting go of the (excessive ) pretension and just trying to listen to the music - revisited today there is a lot of filler around the big tracks, thought this was going to be a 4 or 5, but can't see higher than 3 Star

Some good songs on here but the album just didn't really hit well for me.

3.5/5 Iconic, creative, and culturally influential album (+4), impressive for a debut album (+1), multiple lyrics that give me ick (-1.5)

I like Morrison Hotel album better :(

klassiker

Some good, dare I say excellent, songs to be found on this album, but not quite enough to earn a higher score.

Listened to this a lot during my university years. I liked it then. I like it now. Not something I’d play a lot nowadays though. Has that student vibe to it and I’m far from a student these days.

The Doors, what a unique band, and what a breakthrough first album ! No one sounds like them. It is the perfect illustration of a band blending strong and very different individuals: Who plays like Manzarek, organ and keyboard bass, jazzy drums like Densmore, finger style overdriven guitar like Krieger ? and Jim Morrisson (Val Kilmer) ? One of the few 60s bands that still sounds relevant today. They have great songs but not great albums, although this one and LA woman stand out. The B side is a bit weak at the exception of the monumental "The end".

Un bon album avec 2 morceaux iconiques et devenus des classiques, par ailleurs une belle rythmique/poesie dans les morceaux dans cet album.

The Doors make sense in context, but I imagine a lot of people who have never heard them before are thinking What The Fuck Is This Shit. In the 60s you could eat this stuff with a spoon. Anyway, for me, I'm left wondering why a band that was capable of making cool stuff like The End would waste their time making third-rate crap like the Alabama Song.

Pretty good. Well recorded. Already knew of the big songs from it. The outro and the album in general is trippier than I remember. Might go back to a few songs but probably not the whole thing.

Meh… it was good and has its place but it doesn’t speak to my soul.

É um bom álbum, tem umas 3 que eu considero realmente fodas, as outras são ok, mas algumas são bem cansativas

Some groovy and some very weird songs

Side A can battle with any other band's debut album for the title of best ever. Side B, however...slumps. Always been partial to "Alabama Song" (best rendition) and "Soul Kitchen" is climbing on my top Doors song. These guys must have straight kicked the door down and blew people's minds when this album dropped. Thank you for putting "The End" as the last song. This is a hard one to rate with SideA/B so different...3.45 stars.

This is one of those capital-C "Classics" that I've never really liked all that much. I listened to it again now, and I sort of get why it was compelling, but it just sounds very dated. At the time it probably did sound pretty fresh, but their style is kind of easily-imitated, and it's been done to death, so it doesn't hold up like the lighter side of 60s rock. There's a few main reasons for that: -Morrison isn't really that good a singer - his voice has a nice timbre, and he does some crazy shit sometimes (those are his best moments), but he's got kind of limited range -Their songs are pretty basic - really The Doors are early blues riff-rock, but without the transcendence of a Hendrix behind them - and I just don't like that as much as the folk-psychedelic stuff, I don't think it holds up as well -The sound itself is really dated - there's nothing wrong with hard rock that features electric organ, like I think I gave "In Rock" four stars, but even their organ sound is kind of tinny The best moments are the ones the ones where either Morrison freaks out (late in "The End", for example, or on "Backdoor Man") or when they incorporate a little more variety in the sound. I love the Threepenny Opera cover - the oomph-pa beat, all the glock sounds, it's probably the best song on here. And the blues rockers like "Break On Through" and "Soul Kitchen" are nice, catchy rockers, the former basically rock canon. But I've never liked "Light My Fire", I think it's a boring song, and aside from the freakout so is "The End". It's fine, but I don't think it deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as e.g. the Beatles apogee, or peak Band, or a few others.

-so this is the iconic Jim Morrison. I was unfamiliar with his game -I wasn’t expecting so much blues rock influence somehow but it was really good. such an interesting range of genre and talent, it felt almost as if they were showing off on the album. 3.5 -Favorites are Soul Kitchen, Light My Fire, and The End

Oldies rock - Nice guitar - Nothing outstanding

Album doesn’t get going until light my fire. Then it gets special.

Definitely my favorite from the group so far, though I'm still not totally into them.

A few great tracks from the Doors here, good stuff.

It was okay. I listened twice to make sure I couldn't bump it past three stars. Would probably enjoy it more if I had the flu and was taking lots of cold medicine minus the actually having the flu part.

Never been a fan of the doors. I find their sound a bit monotonous, especially the long drawn out organ solos. I marked the End as a notable track because the beginning is good, but it just drags on and on and on. I never have and never will really seek the bands out to listen to, but it is ok

Overall it’s alright but come on you don’t need to have the final song be 11 minutes cut it into separate songs

Neutral

Ok, sounded good

I thought the album was pretty good, but I don't understand why this is considered one of the best albums of all time. I saw that "The End", the closing song on the album, was considered one of the greatest songs of all time. Maybe psychedelic rock just isn't my thing? I thought it was way too long, but maybe this sort of thing was groundbreaking at the time.

For the first half of the album I was like ahh, I kinda like this electric keyboard vibe in the background of the songs (circa I’m a believer by the monkees kind of sound). After like the 7th song with the electric keyboard in it, that shit started to get old. I’ve never really listened to the doors much and I know Jim Morrison is considered a legend so I’m glad I did but can’t give it more than a three

Same notes as before

What the hell is a Soul Kitchen??? Honestly, I understand why this blew minds when it released, a Rock band where the lead instrument is pretty much an organ? Extremely cool. Unfortunately, despite Jim Morrison having a reputation as a poet, there were a number of lyrics on the album that were downright bad. Favourite track probably being between Break on Through and Light My Fire, side A i thought was far stronger material. Psychedelic Rock isn't really my cup of tea, so will have to get a 3, but it's probably actually a 7. I don't think I even listened to a remaster and It still sounds immaculate. Influential rather than a timeless classic.

Didn't realize how sexual some songs were and even more how creepy Alabama song is

Going to suggest 3*s for boring but not offensively so.

is “the end” really that good or has it been made good in the public consciousness by its incredible usage in *apocalypse now*? maybe a combination of both. “light my fire” is one of the worst songs in the world. somebody should have taken that organ away from them (and pretty much everybody else who isn’t the phantom of the opera). fav tracks: i looked at you; the end

whatever

I dug Crystal Ships. And realized I'm a fan of Jim Morrisons vocal style. Still an unwavering pretentiousness to it but I can look past that. I enjoyed the production as well. I may figure out the Doors yet.. . I'm returning a couple days later a few days later. This certainly kindled an interest in the doors. And I love the studio albums. In particularly Waiting For The Sun. All excited I watched The Doors Live At The Bowl. And I remembered what I disliked about them in the first place. Pretentious meandering masturbation. The studio albums are amazing. I imagine with a producer in place to reel in their arty pretentious ramblings. Live its like 2 out of 20 minutes is coheisive music. And Morrison is high as fuck. I saw this video at the RNR Hall of Fame and it turned me off. I see why. I might go as far as to say they suck live. Or they choose to suck live is prolly more accurate. Great studio band....with shimmers of greatness live but its ruined by drug fueled boring ass meanderings by Morrison.

I like how it seems the growing sentiment is "you know, I think I'm gonna try getting into the Doors." However, you know this will never happen no matter how hard you might try. To quote Kids in the Hall..."Doors fans aren't made. Their born." For me, I'm OK with staying put as a curious on looker making note of all the strange influences.

Not all songs are good, but all in all its nice

Meh, I can see how it is classic, but I thought it was alright.

I like Break on Through, Soul Kitchen, Light My Fire; I kind of like I Looked at You; I almost like End of the Night

"The End" is a pretty messed up song when you actually pay attention to it.

I get the significance of The Doors historically, but their music hasn't held up as well as Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd for me personally. It's certainly not bad, but I'll basically never choose to listen to them. 3.2

It was fine. I preferred the Byrds from last week.

Reveal thoughts: I'm not disappointed! Most of my experience listening to The Doors has been through movies, so it'll be fun to listen to an actual album. Actually, I’m a little disappointed. Kind of boring, to be honest.

Didn’t hate it. But I still don’t think I am a Doors fan.

Cool and groovy album, maybe influenced by just watching Ocean’s 11 previously but fits into that vibe. Can’t say I actively enjoyed a single track though which is a shame.

My only experience with the Doors before this album was the Riders of the Storm remix with Snoop Dogg (yes I know) so I had zero expectations going in. Honestly I thought I wouldn't be a fan of their music (and I'm not) but I had a better time with it than I expected, mainly because of the organ and some of the more hard rock tunes, they are just good fun music for the most part and I can't complain about that really

Oude popmuziek. Op zich prima te luisteren. ***

It was alright

I have nothing against the Doors. I’ve also never deliberately sought to listen to them. That won’t change after hearing this album in full.

I don’t remember ://

more like the bores

I used to love them, but as an adult I find the lyrics disturbing

Has its strengths but the songs sound the same after a while

Fett album!

Banger instrumentals. No song in particular stood off much

I don’t enjoy their lyrics

it’s good but didnt really do anything extra for me

FAVO: Break on through to the other side, Alabama Song(Whisky Bar), Light my fire

I used to really like The Doors. Or at least I used to say I really liked them. I’m not sure I ever really did. Psychedelic rock with a strong emphasis the organ, which starts to sound like circus music to me. It’s definitely their best body of work, but it’s just okay in my book.

Repetitive for my liking but decent.

-Album starts with the banger “Break on Through” (baba’s fav song) -Jim voice is just sexy, so rock n roll -The End is a pretty good 11 minute song -some song lyrics leave more to be desired

Break on Through (To the Other Side) - love the ending, good vocals Soul Kitchen - great concept, pre-chorus hits, transition b/w guitar solo and ending!!?!!??!! The Crystal Ship - kinda Dark Lady-ish, vibey Twentieth Century Fox - not much to say, that organ kinda thing at the back goes hard Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) - best lyrics so far, cool instrumentation, for me its a bit repetitive Light My Fire - slinky 60s vibe, gets better as it goes on, THE ORGAN HITS, the fade out in the middle of the song is so cool, the lil organ at the end hahahahha Back Door Man - kind of a skip, not bad but other songs do what it sets out to do better, unserious in a good way I Looked at You - the median song on the album End of the Night - emotional, mysterious, cool instruments, we're back Take It as It Comes - short and impactful The End - perfect ending for this album, not a replay song tho, cool story

This album features for me one of my whole time keyboard moments ever on Light My Fire. The keyboard solo in the middle of that track is just sublime and the guitar solo ain’t bad either. It was sacrilege to cut these from the single version. I also love the first few minutes of The End before it goes a bit weird. The rest of the album is standard Doors fodder. OK but not great. But this is the Doors and Jim Morrison so deserves the accolades it gets. 3/5 18/11/24

7/10 Much better than the other album of theirs I have heard Decent but unthrilling 60s rock music with a total banger at the start, middle, end. Yes, the 3 big songs are clearly the best Good playing, keyboard/organ really stood out Vocals didn’t always hit, nor lyrics Best: Light My Fire

Coming back to this after a.... long time away. Let's go! A nice short album to return to. I liked this! Nice and easy. Light My Fire is obviously a banger. Correct that like 15% of the album is that one song

I was ready to give this like a 8 or 9/ 10 but then I listened to the lyrics on Alabama Song... Jim Morrison yikes my guy what are you doing? 5/10

Ik kijk even terug naar mijn eerdere schrijfsels over The Doors. Woman.

I loved my 'Best of The Doors' tape when I was young and getting into 60s bands, played it to destruction. 'Break on Through', what an opening to a debut album. The first three are all great, 'Crystal Ship' my favourite. After that the stars start to fall. 'Light My Fire' is a classic but let's be honest, it's too long! Then lots of fairly average tracks until 'The End' which I used to think was amazing, I still like the music but Jim's stoned rambling is nonsense really, tedious. Maybe this just got me on a bad day, who knows, People Are Strange :-)

the doors didn’t quite get fours from me

If you take some mediocre Rolling Stones album tracks and slap in some organ, you have The Doors. The organ sound is distinctive but sounds incredibly dated. 3 stars because I like the psychedelic lyrics, and it’s undeniable that The Doors create a unique mood.

This was a tough one. Some absolute classics that still sound amazing with some of the worst songs I've heard in a while to fill in the gaps.

Grooves. Vox continental organ. Rhodes bass. Guitar tones. Hooky melodies Album begins amazing. Tracks 1-3 are an excellent start Vocals really do feel like another instrument. Unique style and the lyrics don’t really even register as I hear them. I’m sure that would change as I listen through the album more Had never heard of a marxo phone before. Sounds cool “Backdoor man” groove reminds me a lot of “five to one” in the very beginning. Also very sampleavle “Light my fire” is also very sampleable. Organ solos galore

It was fine. Morrison has kinda dull vocals but the band is excellent. Probably a better live group than album. Some classic hits but deep cuts were just there as murky palate cleansers.

This is a really strange album to review. On one hand it's got some the heaviest hitters in this band entire catalogue. On the other hand it's missing some of things that I love most from the Doors. Doesn't feel like there is any insane guitar solo or rock anthem on this album - it's just a lot of synth mashing. And while the synth does hit for me, I can't help but walking away from this one a little dissatisfied.

Boring. I get why they were cool then.

was expecting more than this as i liked the other doors album much more and the cover goes hard. some good tracks… some not so good. 3/5

The vocalist needs to drink water

My Favorites are: break on through, Twentieth Century Fox, Back Door Man, The End (GUITAR INTRO) - Like the sound of it overall - I'm no fan of 60's keyboards but don't try and deny that the Doors make them work -> almost more prominent here than guitar - psychedelic rock isn’t really my world but I do have to say that I understand and respect the influence they have/had on music - it definitely is a must listen and an album you need to listen to before you die - considering the context of political and societal circumstances I bet that this album was IT! (And the band overall) - although I probably wouldn’t listen to it as a whole myself -> only a few selected songs - OVERALL: 3/5

This was... a hard album to rate. Theoretically it's a great album. Has a couple absolute bangers. But I'm not sure if I was too sober or what, but it just didn't click for me.

Overall I liked this album, but I didn’t find it an exciting listen.

Biiiiigggg fan of the doors but this is not my favorite album of theirs, so we’ll see how this goes. Despite lyrical content, I did not enjoy “Alabama Song.” Yeah this is just okay. 3.5? 4? Ugh.

Definitely strong for a debut, but there were some tracks that were weaker, and I guess I'm not a huge Doors fan

Light my firen intro piristää aina!!

Jees. Sitten heikkoudet: soundin yksitoikkoisuus, vetonaulabiisin muuntaminen jamiksi, laulajan mytologisoinnin perusteettomuus. Mutta loppujen lopuksi - ja tästä saa ehkä syyttää Smackia - olen lämmennyt. 3,5

There were a 3 songs I really liked. Otherwise the melody and lyrics of the others didn’t really resonate.

Appreciate the classics and the quirkiness but only found one new song I truly enjoyed.

Groovy background music.

Liked the live versions of all the songs honestly but some songs definitely were sub par where the mixing between the vocals and the instruments were shambolic.

I'm not really a The Doors fan, I haven't listened to them much, but psychedelic music just doesn't fit me very well. Additionally I'm not a great jazz fan either, and I feel like I hear some heavy jazz influences on this album too. I have heard 'Light My Fire' before, but I think it might have been a cover by someone else, or maybe the single version which I understand to not have the big middle jazz section - I remember enjoying this song more than I feel like I did this time at least. 'Back Door Man' is also one of my standouts, but I'm told that that's not a The Doors number but rather a cover, so the fact that it's one of my standouts probably indicative of me not super enjoying their own sound Standouts Light My Fire Back Door Man The End 3/5

Can see why it may have been iconic or pioneering back in the day, but it's just not my style of music. Not my type of vocals, lacks the harmonic and textual depth that I like, doesn't draw me in.

183/1001

Fine, overrated.

I guess I'm kind of fed up with the Doors.

I just wish they had a song called "The Doors" so they could join the heady company of Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Bad Company! Jokes aside, for me, over the last 30 years, The Doors have gone from "This band is my life and Jim Morrison is Kerouac, Rimbaud, and Blake combined" to "Fuck, I'm so embarrassed I used to listen to The Doors", to my latest position. The band is important culturally, a touch stone for many other artists. The music is bloody good actually. Little heavy on the keys occasionally but Krieger has a unique style and Densmore is a fantastic drummer, given the space he has to fill. This is psychedelic with a gothic tint. Later albums move a bit further into the dark and have a bit more interest for me due to that.

This album has some amazing memorable songs but is overall a bit repetitive and mediocre. Incredibly influential but not for me Fav song: Light my fire

Neither a Doors fan, nor a hater. Which makes me feel like I'm in rarified air. This Is The End makes me wish it was the end, but beyond that these are all solid songs.

I've never been a huge fan of The Doors so I really don't have much to say, it's just not for me

Classic but okay

Some good songs. Okay album

60s blues rock. I used to like The Doors but now I find Jim Morrison a bit insufferable. The big hits are classic songs though

Organ lead rock, got a bit rambly

I think much of The Doors’ appeal has to do with Morrison’s charisma and early death. Obvious highlights are the famous ones

Some classics but a very dated sound.

I think hindsight has only hurt this album. Not dramatically, but I don't think it stands out as much now, as it probably did when it was released. That said, it's a very, very solid album. Not really "greatest ever" but still great. Nothing particularly stands out, other than the keys/synth work throughout the album, which is really well done and balanced. Favorite Song(s): Light My Fire

I mean it was alright ig, not big on the 60s as a whole but fairs

An album that is not as good as you remember it being when you were 19..

A decent album, nothing on there to make me stop listening. There were two more well-known tracks, and they were basically a distillation of the rest of the album. If it came on again I'd probably listen to it, but I wouldn't actively search it out and listen again. That, to me, is the sign of a 3 star album.

It was good, a really good debut but not perfect, I suppose nothing is…

i've actually been meaning to listen to this album for the longest time, but ig i just never got around to lol break on through is pre good, iconic for sure soul kitchen is kinda a meh song for me currently on the crystal ship, and i'm liking it a lot more, it feels very mysterious and i love that it reminds me of humbug in a way really like twentieth century fox, it oozes 60s with the keys and guitar love the play on words as well

Solid album. Really dig Jim Morrison's voice, and the guitar work. Need to listen to more Doors!

I really enjoyed some tracks, but not others… this is like a 3.5 for me

It was fine. I thought I hated The Doors, but I discovered I didn't mind them. I listened to this hours into a long drive, so that may have affected my opinion, but I'm not sure how.

The singles really carry this, in my opinion. 2.5.

Good old mono. Fun listen, classic for a reason I guess. Bit more jazzy than I remembered

i liked the beginning and end but the middle kind of melted together and dragged

Classic rock staple. Could be seen as a mainstream version of Velvet Underground with a prettier and more traditional lead singer. Highlights: "Break on Through", "20th Century Fox", "Alabama Song"

Some old influential music. Not bad at all and glad to have listened to it.

Another album where a lot of the songs start to blend

It's good to finally listen to The Doors after only knowing their reputation for many years, but their music wasn't for me.

Feeling extremely neutral about this album 6/10

44 minutes and 11 songs is the stuff of dreams, so I had high expectations for the album, which were unfortunately not met. I listened to it twice to and from Oakland and the Drizzle fell asleep on the way back. I didn't care for the vocals. I liked the overall sound, different from the other 60's albums we've listened to. High 3.

6/10 - There was some decent songs but nothing stood out to me. Break on through was pretty good and so was twentieth century fox and light my fire. The beginning of the end i have heard before but the rest of the song was pretty bad.

Some astonishing rock songs, and a couple of clunkers. I was actually astounded by how much I didn't like "Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)", but "Light My Fire" immediately extinguished that disgust. Highlights: Break on Through (To the Other Side), Light My Fire Back Door Man, The End

This is a nice, fun album. Lots of familiar songs, decent pacing. Could see myself revisiting it, but it's probably not going in my regular rotation

Decent

Okay, listen - we've already talked about The Doors once and I already mentioned that I once liked The Doors because I was a kid and the drama and weirdness was very interesting to me but I "grew out" of it. That's not meant to be dismissive! That being said, there's something interesting about this first album - no bass player, just keys, a weird makeup: poetry, drugs, and an organ. I still don't think I'd ever listen to this voluntarily, but three stars for what this once meant and how original and unique it was.

довольно интересный, хоть и довольно одинаковый

eh. i liked this at first but it wore out its welcome. probably closer to a 3.5 but i don't really see myself listening to it ever again, sooooo....

Great until the last two songs

Great highs. Some of it leaves me a bit cold.... more highs than lows

nothing to say

Pretty good

I haven’t listened to the Doors in years. My first three CDs that I purchased myself: The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana. I don’t have anything bad to say about this album, nor do I have anything all that good to say about this album. A fine listen, but nothing more than that for me….

Definitely a classic, but sounding dated to me now.

It started off strong but I didn’t really find the rest of the album to be my taste

Had to stop. Did not love the sound.

it sounds good but also kinda bad

rivalutato nel senso che non la vedo piu come una cosa che proprio devo skippare ma comunque non è il mio ne riconosco il valroe oggettivo

It reminds me of The Velvet Underground’s banana album, but that makes sense for it being released in the same time period. Chill rock mixed with some like bluesy rock, nothing too special about it. I really like “Break on Through”, probably my favorite on the album.

Few good songs, but overall I don't care much about this. 3/5

fun songs, lyrics are more odd than I remembered

An important band in rock history.

Fine for background noise

Light My Fire is so good though. I think I’ve over-heard Alabama Song or the ending is so creepy, it just creeps me the heck out. Bleh, this is a tough call.

While I can certainly appreciate the significance of the album and it's influence I didn't personally love it. I liked it, but I probably wouldn't play it again.

The music is pretty great, Morrison's lyrics sometimes come off as hokey and corny - I mean, "she's a 20th century fox" wow deep bro, deep. Despite this, it's easy to see what makes it a renowned album. Each musician knows when to pull back and dive in, creating a sense of depth that a lot of recordings lack.

3.5/5 Break on Through is a favorite. You can hear the influence it had on harder rock later. Everyone has heard Soul Kitchen even if you don't think you have. It's all over movies and shows. 20th Century Fox is a classic. Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) is a weird choice but it fits in a way that differentiates the band from contemporaries. Light My Fire is legendary.

Overall a decent album. There’s a few songs I really liked, others I thought were okay and a couple I wasn’t fond of at all

A master class on instrumentation. I only knew Jim Morrison for his rage on songs like Five to One so it was nice to hear his vocal range on this album and where the fire sorta originated

This was OK. I knew some of the tracks and the length if pretty good. But I doubt I'll listen again to it as an album.
