Reviews (page 10 of 14)
Such hard panning, relatively few instruments on each track, low and delayed vocals.
4.5/5. Very good. I expected nothing less. Not my favorite doors album, however. But that doesn't mean it's bad.
Brilliant album - further comment superfluous
I have difficulty separating the album from the movie. Break on Through is a great, quick track. Songs like light my fire and The End are still good for a listen now and again.
pretty good
The Doors
A lot of classics on this album. Starts off great and finishes. This is The End didn't need to be 11 minutes long.
Light My Fire
groovy! minus one point for creepy lyrics about children
Another good Doors album. I think LA Woman is a bit better, but I still just love their whimsical sound.
The drive rock with amazing electro-guitar music.
Not a bad song on the album. 4.25. Songs are memorable, but something about it doesn't inspire relistens. I can't say why. It also feels like it's trying to be "smart" music. Also can't pinpoint why.
Cool, groovy, bluesy and interesting
The attribute I like most about Jim Morrison's voice is that you believe every thing he says. Great album.
not their best, but still fucking excellent.
2nd album I’ve gotten that I’ve heard before but that’s cool. This is a decent album. Preemptively predicting I’ll give it a 4. I think this is a good example possibly. “Break on through” is a classic for a reason. “Light my fire”. Another great song. So far the songs I already loved stand out and the others are... eh not bad not amazing. “The end” is a spectacular song. Great vibe. Also lol at “the west is the best”. It feels like such a weird brag about where Morrison lives in an otherworldly song. I mean I think I get where he’s coming from but looking back at how that movement died out... it’s just pretty silly.
Hot diggedy dawg. Reminds me of a sex-fuelled heart attack I once had.
I always lumped The Doors in with Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin as a band I thought were hugely overrated. I might have to reassess that as I really enjoyed this.
Clima bacana. Velharia boa. Melhor música: Break on through
Klasssikkobiisejä ja leppoisaa rokkia. Kyllä tämän voisi laittaa myöhemminkin soimaan ja fiilistellä. Ei ihan ykkössuosikki, mutta selkeä like kuitenkin.

“The Doors” by the Doors (1967) One look at the facial expressions on the album cover suggests to the listener that it’s time to put away the bubble gum. Jim Morrison’s lyrics on this album are of uneven, but mostly high, quality. His metaphors are not cheap, unlike most mid sixties rock songs. They reveal a mature mind working in an under-traveled metier, and the results are arresting. Rock and roll is now demanding to be taken seriously. These are not songs for teenagers, in 1967 or in 2021. From a distance of almost 55 years, it may be difficult to discern how revolutionary this music was, and much of it withstands aging. Morrison’s vocals are only average, salvaged by enormous passion, and punctuated by screams and wails that definitely do not age well. But try to put yourself in 1967. Maybe try listening with a little inebriation (I said this wasn’t for teenagers). There is virtually no bass guitar on this album, which might have been a fatal flaw. But gifted keyboardist Ray Manzarek plays all the bass lines on a keyboard bass. And he pulls it off. Excellent guitar riffs and solos (especially on “The End”) by Robby Krueger, and generally well-executed drums by John Densmore (He occasionally drops tempo on elaborate fills—a frequent weakness of 1960 rock & roll drummers). When listening to “Alabama Song (Whisky Bar), it might be helpful to know that it is the only song on the album not written by Morrison. It was written by Berthold Brecht and Kurt Weill (in German) in 1927, originally as an anti-bourgeois parody of sermons of Martin Luther. This was back in the day when Germany was eight years into their first (unsuccessful) experiment with democracy, and five years before Hitler ‘successfully’ said, “Enough is enough”. Brecht was a communist, being awarded the Stalin Peace Prize in 1954, after 40 years of artistic labor, pioneering Marxist dialectical aesthetics. But back to the music: There’s a wonderful and entrancing middle section on “Light My Fire” which is not to be missed. But the artistic centerpiece of this album is the closing track “The End”. It helps to be familiar with the plot of “Oedipus Rex” by Sophocles (429 B.C.). Set aside twelve minutes, put on headphones, and listen to this. Loud. Francis Ford Coppola’s decision to use this song in the opening scene of “Apocalypse Now” (1979) helped to fix this work in the American psyche of the Vietnam era. It worked then, and it still works today. 4/5
Coool, very cool
Really solid album. There were plenty of songs that were just ok in my opinion, but there were some that were great jams. Lyrically a solidly written album as well Favorite Track(s): “Break On Through,” “Light My Fire,” and “The End”
great sounds, the doors are a hit
Well obviously a bander because of its classic nature, I don't like ALL the songs. I like also that this album hasn't been remastered, like so many of the others ones we listen to. You can hear the age in the music - I love it! That's more to do with Spotify than the music itself
Some good tunes.
Wasn't sure how much i was going to enjoy this as it's been forever since i listened to it. It is still amazing... even though "the end" gets up its own navel a bit. Love Crystal Ship.
This is a really nice slice of Doors music. If you wanted to know if you like the Doors this would be a really good place to start before diving into their deeper stuff. Classics and some semi weird stuff without it getting too weird. Very enjoyable.
Ooh baby that organ. This album is actually pretty damn unique for the time. Psychadelic, loud-rock, sort of garage jammy. When put in the context of a classic rock radio station, it's easy to look past all it has going for it. Not to mention this album is chock full of bangers.
Not my favorite genre, but the songs are very pleasant.
I'm starting to really like this style of rock. Some British Invasion bands are better, but this is a strong contender.
I'm wishing they'd skipped the ratings with this thing, or at least made them optional. This album might deserve a 3 or even a 2 from some perspectives of sophistication; I'm inclined to give it a four on pure nostalgia. I played this to death in the early 90s.
A good, classic rock album. Heard some tracks before but liked some I hadn't like Alabama Song. Break on Through to the Other Side and Light My Fire are classics of course.
Este album es más mi estilo. Tiene algunas cosas experimentales, pero no es TAN DENSO y lo escuché dos veces al hilo. Además tiene Baby Light My Fire 🔥 Descubrí la canción ‘Soul Kitchen’
Love Morrison. This is the end, beautiful friend, the end.
pirurupiripirupirupiriririrupirupiririririripupirupirupurupirupurupirupurupirupiru
There's so many great songs on here, and it's very rewarding to tune in for it. Alabama Song was my personal fave!
Vacker, drömsk och mörk
Break on through
Nice one with lots of classics. Surprisingly short songs, except for the End!
This album continues to be great despite the best efforts of Jim Morrison.
Enjoyed this more than their latter albums. Turns out Ray Manzerak was the main talent in the band, I’d assumed Morrison had written the big tunes but new respect for the organist.
Very nice thank you the doors
Pari legendaarista rallia
Great debut!
Pretty cool stuff
Chef-d’œuvre de Jim Moriarty
Sounds like good Christmas music.
hahaha 67. a shake and shimmy and bop around kind of album with a rock ebb and flow. although not all of the songs are exactly my cup of tea, i would say i’m a fan overall. wish i could rate this a 3.5
First Listen: NA, already listened OVERALL: I feel as though The Doors in theory are far greater than The Doors in reality. If you told me that there was a keyboard heavy 60s psychedelic rock band with a raging alcoholic for a frontman, I would assume the music would be some life-altering shit. Unfortunately, The Doors have never clicked for me fully, and most of the time I find music influenced by them supersedes them. That aside, this album is pretty good! I personally find the singles to be the strongest, but songs like 20th Century Fox and End Of The Night pull their weight. The End might be an all time closer. 7/10 T3: Breakdown On Through, Light My Fire, The End
I've never warmed to The Doors as much as some of their peers. I think if you're not really allured by the myth of Jim Morrison as a sex-god-rockstar-shaman-poet, they don't have much appeal left. He had a good voice, a lantern jaw, and died young. And...? It's rare that a baritone in leather trousers leaves me completely cold. Plus I'm rarely in the mood for much Manzarek – the guy just goes on and on, and I don't know why they let him. I think I prefer The Doors when they keep it brief. I ended up enjoying a simple cover like Back Door Man, which at least knows how dumb it is, more than the meandering indulgence of Light My Fire and The End. As a huge Depeche Mode fan, I have no high ground from which to mock Morrison for rhyming "west" with "best" and "snake" with "lake", but I will because the guy's held up as a messianic poetic talent.
The Doors. What more do we need to say. It's Jim Morrison.
It got weird but not terrible?
High hopes for this one, then dashed to smithereens when I realised it just isn’t very good. Couple of bangers on it though
I think I’m too young to get the mystique around Jim Morrison, but I guess he invented the rock star life as a piece of performance art. A good sound, though and good songs.
This is a good album. For anyone looking to get into The Doora, I would recommend this album.
Very nice album! I enjoyed the era. Specifically 20th century Fox was sick!
i won't lie, Light My Fire does hit Would I listen again: it's acceptable Deserves to be on this list: yea 3.4
Pretty good.
Yeah it was fine.
It sure is Jimmy Morrison doin' the sing sing thang
It's a good album but always wonder how the reception would have been had Morrison not died so early.
An interesting album. Definitely abstract. With the benefit of coming to this in 2026, it feels almost stereotypically 60s, but I guess that is because it helped define that sound. On the first listen it didn't do much for me, but I enjoyed much it better on the second time a round. I think it may certainly be a grower. I liked it more than baseline, but I'm not jumping to listen to it again immediately. 3/5
Classic
Pretty good, but doesn't touch L.A. Woman. Some songs overstayed their welcome, but an excellent debut.
Okay okay this wasn't as bad as the last few songs this is going country music tho which I am not a fan of but this wasn't horrible Day 4!
ooooo? i always feel like the songs are better at the start of the album tbh Break on through (to the other side) - 5/5 Soul kitchen - 4/5 The crystal ship - 3/5 Twentieth century fox - 3/5 Alabama song (whisky bar) - 2/5 Light my fire - 4/5 Back door man - 3/5 I looked at you - 2/5 End of the night - 2/5 Take it as it comes - 3/5 The end - 1/5 30/55 = 2.7/5
The Doors are really cool when you're hearing them for the first time and you're into psychedelic weird cool stuff. Like dig right man? And then you fucking grow up and you realize that while this band is really fucking talented Jim is a fucking dead weight anchor and they really could've used a frontman with more skillful vocals. Do I still enjoy the songs? Yeah but man - this one just kinda gets more and more meh each time I hear it.
I dunno, man. It’s the Doors. They’ve never really been my thing, but they’re ok. This is one of the better Doors records. But it’s still not really my thing. 7/10
It's fine and has some quite nice songs, but I didn't see anything that would elevate this above any of the others rock of this era.
오묘. 재즈바에서 들릴것 같은 느낌
I loved the album. Break on through- great drums, bass line and instruments in general. Soul Kitchen- great piano, the Fender Rhodes Piano Bass gives such a different sound to the album. Twentieth centrury fox- good song, nothing is EXTREMELY special about it to me, still loving the piano bass and the guitar. Alabama song - love it. Like the guitar and the piano. Cool song. Back door man- good introduction, love it. I looked at you- I like how there is more than one people singing, (or maybe the voice is double) even though this album has a very characteristic sound this song is a little different. End of the night- softer. It's really relaxing, although there are certain chords or sounds that make the song a little creepy just as the end of the night, like walking alone at night or that type of vibe. The crystal ship- soft song also but this one is not creepy or relaxing its just not like the other songs because they don't use the piano that has been used in the rest of the songs as the main character (the Fender Rhodes Piano Bass)they use piano with a more 'normal' sound.
Not much to say, it’s good but not as good as LA Woman. Nothing else to add
this is what 1960s music sounds like!
An undeniable classic that is also undeniably annoying. The End is so stupid. Great music with so many annoying parts.
It's okay. They have better albums though. I like the ending part of 'Light My Fire'
The hits are here but the rest of the album just kind of there. I know people look at Jim Morrison as a great poet but most songs were average at best. There was another issue. The organ was too much. Plus The End is not very good.
The 1960s Nirvana
It’s got the hits. Overall, a decent album. Last song is a bit long though. 3.1/5.0
Alright
I'll give this a 3 because it's an impressive debut chock full of hits, but my general sentiment about this band is UGH. I couldn't make it all the way through the spoken word part of The End. Just shut up, you pretentious twat!
pretty solid album. the “Alabama Song” is kinda lame but aside from that it’s all great
pretty good variety here. break on through is good of course. alabama song is really goofy, it's like honky tonk or something. the end is just indulgent
Even though Jim Morrison was soooo fine, I’ve never been obsessed with their music. My favs were Break on Through and Soul kitchen
Kiderült, hogy ismertem róla eleve a Break On Throught és a Light My Firet. (köszi minionok, köszi Vilu) Kedvenceim: Break On Through, Alabama Song, Light My Fire, The End, de legfőképpen a Take It As It Comes. (ezt kiderült, hogy Apa is szereti)
This was an incredible debut album. That being said, I don’t love the doors
3.5
Despite being a big influence on one of my favourite bands (Echo & The Bunnymen), The Doors themselves don’t do that much for me. I feel this is quite an iconic album as well but, while listenable, I didn’t connect with it at all.
Like
Fine, a little too rambly at parts and some really weak songs in the middle that are either actively grating or go nowhere. The End is great.
What the rolling stones wished to be
Instrumental mag ich die, die Stimme auch, aber die Gesangsmelodien nicht.
This era of music isn't really for me, but I acknowledge how important they were for the evolution of music. One of Scott Stapp/Creed's influences, I can hear it in some of the songs. It's listenable, some songs are good, others not at all for me.
A great album I've heard too many times.
I've already stated by belief that The Doors are possibly the most over-rated band in history. Not awful, just nowhere near as great as their fanbase believes. As for this album, it does have some classics on it. It also has several tracks that I would consider below average filler - "Twentieth Century Fox", "Alabama Song", "Back Door Man", etc. Overall, a very meh album with a few gems. 2 1/2 stars
Not a big fan of the Doors, but this is the one with all the hits ...
3 - ok album carried by the hits
3.5
Break on thrugh Twrntieth century fox Light my fire
The big songs are perfectly spaced at the start, middle and end of this album. ‘Break on Through…’ is a great opener and the subsequent album tracks build well on this. However. ’Alabama song’ doesn’t quite live it to what came before. ‘Light my Fire’ would stand out on most album and marks the half way mark. It is somewhat questionable that this is followed by a song featuring lyrics about someone eating pork and beans and Morrison himself boasting the he ‘eats more chicken than any man ever seen’. ‘The End’ is a long meandering crescendo and one i have always loved and considered The Doors best song and nothing here changes that opinion
Turns out I know, and enjoy, more songs by The Doors than I thought I did. Off-beat, in the best way, but a bit too long, it’s really a 2.5* for me.
rating artificially higher because i've always liked jim morrison's hair
As a kid, I couldn't listen to The Doors without getting freaked the fuck out. "The End" haunted me, it was so terrifying. Kept me up every night for a week. I also remember my dad turning on the shitty biopic with Val Kilmer and the scene where Morrison is maced and temporarily blinded was on and it just doubled the trauma. As an adult, I find the album fun except for a few songs. Very much in line with other psychedelic rock on the list but there's just this dark undertone not there in other groups. I guess they still give me the willies a little bit.
Every Doors song sounds the same. Depending on the day, I either find that sound awesome or intolerable.
Quite enjoyed this album, although it's dated, but I would say it's quite a different sound for its time. Typical keyboard sound of the 60s. Like the old classic "Light My Fire". Some songs weren't so good.
last three tracks carried the album ngl
Ravintola musiikkia (Tai mieluusti kuuntelisin tätä radios)
I find myself irrationally annoyed by Jim Morrison. He always struck me as the kind of man that was a rockstar because he kept telling you he was, and a lot of this just felt like it was self-consciously teting to be 'kooky'. There are some great moments - there's a reason Light My Fire is a classic, although you could probably halve the instrumental section in the middle. It does combine rock and jazz in an interesting way in places. Wasn't as appalled as i thought I would be, but not in a rsuh to listen again. 3 seems fair.
Some good tracks, interesting, but not my favorite 3/5
I don’t love or hate the Doors. I am struck by how relevant a lot of these tracks feel which is impressive for a debut album that came out almost 60 years ago. The End is what makes this album controversial IMO. I find it overly long, self indulgent, and a bit boring. At the same time, it did push the boundaries of what was acceptable to release on an album. 6/10
40 albums already! (So the Generator has informed me) The time she does fly I have the Doors down in my book as one of the most overrated bands of all time ... we shall see how this goes. Never listened to any of their albums beyond the iconic greatest hits album, with the red and white cover design. This is going to get me to listen to the famous "The End" for the first time, so that's a plus. For the first half, I'm thinking -- this is better than I expected. Not that different, but the non-singles are better than I thought they would be. But then! The back half! Tracks 8-10 are exactly as bad as I expected them to be. So lame! And The End ... there's a reason I have always avoided it, and the reasons to avoid it are plainly evident when you listen to it. The End is actually a bit better than I thought it would be -- it drags less, flows better. But again -- they are beating modestly my quite low expectations. It doesn't really change things much. 198 stars out of 357 (docked 14 stars for, in their desperate search for things that rhyme with Fire, leaning fairly hard into Mire ... terrible!)
Not sure what happened here. I almost didn't even bother listening to this record. I felt like I'd heard enough Jim Morrison for this lifetime. Not only were the Doors played in heavy rotation on the radio stations I listened to as a child (looking back I have to wonder WHY), but my college roommate was a massive Doors fan, to the point where every year on Jim Morrison's birthday we had to listen to all their songs in alphabetical order (she had made some cassettes that accomplished this). I figured I already knew how much I didn't like this band so why punish myself further by listening to it? However that seemed contrary to the assignment, so I sat through this, and I was pleasantly suprrised. Were there songs I had to terminate early? You bet. Not only is The End unbearable, but the execrable organ solo in Light My Fire makes me want to turn off all FM radio, forever, just to make sure I never accidentally hear it again. And yet--I enjoyed listening to this. Yeah, Jim Morrison is annoying, and his lyrics are easily mocked and filled with rampant sexism. And yet--I have to put this into the ever-widening three-star category.
Honestly such a vibe! I had already listened to some of the songs on the album before so it feels it was the perfect first album to get me going on this project!
Ottimo album, canzoni ottime di un rock eccellente. alcune tracce possono sembrare ripetitive ma nel complesso davvero un ottimo disco!
Sometimes there are albums where every song is good, hits and non-hits alike. This is not one of them. Ok, but I very quickly became tired of the deedle-deedle keyboards (sorry Ray)
It seems I’ve always liked various Doors-esque bands more than actual The Doors. And this one is not their best album.
I like the general vibe of the The Doors, but a couple of tracks break the spell for me, e.g. The Alabama Song.
A little too keyboard happy but Break On Through is a classic. Coppola changed how I felt about The End after he put it in Apocalypse Now.
- Another SAer... - This album has great vocals and instrumentals that go together really well. I especially like the organ and guitar. - Songs can go on too long. - There are songs that I actively dislike... and the casual misogyny.
I fundamentally do not trust anyone who creates a mythology around themself or allows one to be created, and damn if Jim Morrison isn’t both of those things. He’s always given me an ick that the fun blues rock/precursor to goth bands thing and his interesting voice have to compete with also he fancied himself a poet and that never bodes well either album list is confirming for me that most songs about drugs are like hanging out with high people when you’re sober: endlessly fascinating for them but boring as shit for everyone else (weirdly all the songs we’ve listened to about heroin make it sound fun as hell, which is probably bad for health but good for music) probably gets a two on a night when I’m feeling less vulnerable. three mostly thanks to Light My Fire nearly pulling it up to a four and The End trying just as hard to drag it down to a one.
A classic.
Clásico total. No mucho para decir.
Yeah yeah, it's def really good
This album is strange and sexy rock and roll. I'm instantly transported to the 60s while listening, but I wasn't born until the late 70s, so I have nostalgia for a time I never experienced. It's wild.
Not my usual genre, but I enjoyed listening nonetheless. Very vibey.
Definitely late 1960s. Heavy twang and drum dependence plus spoken stanzas
When they aren’t trying that hard it’s fun, sexy and raw…could remind me of the stooges. When they try hard it sounds as annoying as Jim Morrison looks.
Enjoyed. 3.7
3.5
Another where I understand why people enjoy the band, but Doors aren’t my thing. That being the case, they have a distinct sound and I can hear their influence on emo music and 80s (at least to my ears). like the opening number, “Break on Through.” Enjoyed “Alabama Song” and “Back Door Man,” which I’ve never heard.
The album that defined the psych rock sound…but certainly not a perfect album by any means. What was it with these British bands poorly doing American country??
Making Mr. Agin proud iykyk. Very autumn! All the songs I like are ones that I would listen to around Halloween but probably not during the rest of the year. Favs: light my fire, end of the night, take it as it comes, the end
Not bad
Hit or miss for the first few tracks, but after that this really took off. I get the hype around this group and Morrison now.
Light My Fire is good. The End, while cringe, is a unique classic with some cool moments. Robby Krieger is a player. Band still meh overall.
Sonido viejo no mal pero no me encanto
Man, The Doors has such a unique sound (cue keyboard).
Kinda bored me.
When I was younger, I thought this was perhaps the best opening line to any album. I even enjoyed the Oliver Stone movie. Now I'm faintly embarrassed by this. Alabama Song was always unwelcome.
this is the end, beautiful friend
bit too slow for me, just not my taste
Pretty chill album, the songs were very nice just leaving in the background. There were a couple of songs that were really popular and then the rest just sounded like the usual Doors songs, so it was overall pretty great-sounding throughout.
Classic. Loved getting the deep cuts but I didn’t care for a few songs.
7/10
Muy bueno! En el medio tiene un bache pero muy agradable de escuchar
Chill, all songs sound kinda the same. Not really my vibe
Pretty strong album overall - fizzles out towards but first 2/3 you can’t skip. Gets a bit weird on Alabama but giving it a 3.3
I came into this album expecting to give it a 1 or 2 because I was really only familiar with Light My Fire, which I am not a fan of. Some of the bluesier tracks I found quite enjoyable.
Little slow and felt old.
More notable songs on this Doors album but not something I would personally go back to.
Great record, not much more to say than that
Better than the Morrison hotel for sure. The hits are great if not a little extended, the filler is usually good except for crystal ship, that’s a bad song. The end really does not do much for me, I get it and I get why people like it as an art piece but it’s just a little too much. Rays playing on this album is insane and is the clear highlight for me, and Robby’s guitar work is great when it’s not just simple blues rock boring. Jim Morrison is fine, I think I hate the culture around doors fans and it really ruins the whole Morrison image for me. This boils down to, break on through is great, light my fire is good but too long, I don’t like the end that much, the rest is fine.
Tok ikke lange tida før The Doors dukka opp igjen, her med deres debutalbum. Et album jeg har lyttet til før. Forholdsvis bra psych-rock, men ikke noe jeg returnerer til med hyppighet. Top 3: Take It As It Comes, Light My Fire, The Crystal Ship
I knew Break on Through (To the Other Side), Light My Fire, and The End. I liked the song Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar). I didn’t like how long some of the songs were, but they were the songs I knew which made it not as bad. I enjoyed this.
Bellino, è il mio primo album che era uscito quindi ha un posticino speciale
I feel like I can recognize how influential this may have been in the 60s. The organ is the most interesting part of the album. But it’s missing some sauce and the album itself is kinda just.. fine. The End was kinda wild lol
The Doors…another band where I could take all of their songs I love and make one great album out of it, but I can’t say that I particularly enjoy any of their albums from start to finish. Listening to this, I feel like I’m halfway between being depressed or dancing at a swinging 60’s party. Interesting album for sure. But not something I want to constantly revisit. Favorite tracks are Light My Fire (love all the covers of this song too), Soul Kitchen, and Whiskey Bar because it’s fun. Really like a 2.75 of an album for me. But I’m gonna give it a 3
Very strong opening track however I feel the quality dropped as it went on, especially “The End”. For me, it drags on far too long and is too repetitive for a song that’s 10 minutes long.
i didn't know the doors were so freaky
I see how this is influential to psych and British rock but I’m genuinely not sure I get it. If there wasn’t the myth of Jim Morrison I wonder what would be different.
The Doors are fine I guess, but the only moment that really strikes me as special is Light My Fire
I enjoyed some songs but others were meh
The generator previously gave me "Morrison Hotel", my first exposure to The Doors. Somehow, even though of course the music is unique and steeped in psychedelia, this album came across as more accessible than "Morrison Hotel" somehow. This was of course an interesting listen, with noteworthy songs for me being "Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)"; "Light My Fire"; and "The End". However, the album didn't particularly resonate with me at this point in time. I do think about the style of these songs sometimes though, and they're just so different than what I usually listen to.
I put off listening to this all day because I hated the last doors album so much. This one was better, the radio hits are good. Still think strange days is my favorite doors record and in general I think I could kinda take or leave The Doors....I think....sorryyy ...😬😬😬
fine, need better
Not bad; feels like I listened to it before.
--Break On Through (To the Other Side)...freaky keyboards --Soul Kitchen...summer of love shit. it's groovy --The Crystal Ship... --____-- --Twentieth Century Fox...standard rocker --Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)...TIL this is a Bertolt Brecht joint. makes sense --Light My Fire...Ed Sullivan thought this was too racy. good lord people were lame in the 60s. still are, I guess. too long but it builds well --Back Door Man...the lack of bass in the Doors never really bothered me but this could definitely use some --I Looked at You...fun rocker --End of the Night...not my thing but they're trying something different --Take It as It Comes...oooh we got a calypso thing going --The End...true art? total bullshit? who's to say?
Pretty good. Very 60s sounding.
Weird vibes
They can only influence me to this extent (which means hardly at all). For some reason, I dislike Morrison's lyrics, and I dislike his singing style even more. The only thing I appreciate is keyboard.
very strong debut album, lots of bangers on here. great launchpad for the rest of the doors' discography- rating just once again boils down to the fact that a lot of these songs aren't what i'd listen to on the regular. "the end" was my favorite
Listened to about half of it. Decent music, but didn't really suit my taste.
Solid album, I'd give 3.5 stars if I could.
for every great song on here, there’s one I’d be fine never hearing again. those organ sounds really elevate those great tracks to another level.
Never really dug Jim Morrison's boring singing style and thought The Doors were overrated. When he gets his rock voice going I enjoy it a lot more. I still think they are overrated. Just a little less so now.
prima album
Some pretty good songs on this one but I felt it was just lacking something.
Favourite Songs: Break On Through (To The Other Side)
Solid album. Got a little weird at times.
horny boomer slop
super distinct sound, I got more into it the longer the album went on. still I can't imagine a time of day or mood I'd be in to throw this on
Jeg kan anerkjenne at The Doors var hipt og kult og unikt når det kom ut. Men jeg kan ikke noe for at jeg syns det er ganske flaut i dag.
Problems: 1) very weak and often rather silly lyrics, but some stick in the head none-the-less, 2) condescending to women, perhaps paedophilic in parts, 3) overwhelming keyboards throughout, often not to the best effect, 4) extremely repetitious musically and lyrically 5) rather stuck in a drugs/sex/death world vision as well. However, if you suspend your disbelief and wade into it, you just might find your own door out of it.
they open then they close, genius
Some bangers, more diverse than I thought, not a huge synth jam guy but good stuff.
just that rock sound i don't like
Ahead of its time
I’m not a big fan of The Doors. I do appreciate their place in the history of R&R though. 3 really good tunes on here.
I'm just not a fan. I can see why people are, but not me.
Had higher expectations going in. Some good songs — Light My Fire is a banger — but the lyrics are a bit bad overall and it drags on longer than necessary. The End is WAY too long. 3/5
Never been a huge fan of the doors, too bluesy for me. But the end makes the album worthwhile.
I like Soul Kitchen. I haven’t listened to these songs since college. At Ohio State in the late 90s, you would typically hook up to this album or something by Jimmy Buffet. So these songs remind me of some regrettable evenings with men who believed they were poets.
Can tell they were high!
The more experimental second half is more interesting to me than the first. The most popular song is the opener which seems odd as it seems rather basic rock. 'The Crystal Ship' is rather beautiful while 'Light My Fire', 'Back Door Man', 'The End' are more interesting and lean in the psychedelic vibes.
Neither here nor there
The well known tracks are decent enough, the rest is a bit unmemorable. The end is a meandering mess
+ good album overall + clean guitar parts, good vocals (liked Jim's voice especially on calmer songs like crystal ships) + liked the organ solo in Take It as It Comes - sometimes a bit heavy on either organ, cymbals or vibrato without complementing the other instruments very well - don't like his (presumably intentional) flat singing in Alabama song
SHOW ME THE WAY TO THE NEXT LITTLE GIRL???? JIM MORRISON, DU SCHWEIN
I mean he has a great voice and... Sorry I'm pretty hungover and I'm not in the mood to be thorough. I wasn't amazed
Favorite Tracks: Break on Through / Soul Kitchen / Light My Fire Rating: 3.0 I listened to the 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, featuring a 2017 remaster. I generally enjoyed the classic hits on this album, but also skipped a couple songs: The Crystal Ship / Alabama Song. This one will fall into the category of classic albums that I'm glad I listened to and appreciated, but not going to be spending any additional time with. A LOT of organ on this.
I wasn’t alive then, but this is what the late 60’s sound like to me. Ray’s unmistakable organ and Jim’s iconic wailing. Their cultural impact and influence on subsequent music can’t be denied. 2 or 3 classic songs, but there’s also a lot of filler here.
This falls into the category of a band whose hits I know but haven't listened to much beyond that and it turns out their other songs mostly sound like their hits. Which is always a bit of a disappointment.
Not my style but didn’t dislike
I mean this is a good album but I've just heard all the songs way too much. Doors are not may favorite and this is definitely not my favorite album of theirs. I'm guessing when it came out it was revolutionary but now it just feels tired and boring to me. I'll give it 3 stars for being good at one point but I can't give it more than that even though it probably deserves more.
Papa horny, Michael. I’m very “meh” on this one. The good bits are good, the bad poetry is really bad (“Ride the snake to the lake, the West is the best”), and I suppose it proves how influential this album was that some of the really corny bits sound like the soundtrack to a Swinging London party in an Ealing comedy.
As a teenager, the moments where the Doors intersect with the Stooges where the only Doors songs I was interested in. Now, I can find interesting things in the slower moments. I still find myself drawn to the wilder, raw-power rock, and I still feel like there's a lot self-indulgent navelgaze and boring White Blues. But there's stuff here I want to hear more of.
One of the albums of all time
198/1089 3 Doors albums down and this is definitely my favourite. i quite like the more raw sound. I don’t have much more to add other than that this project was a good listen and i enjoyed my time with it, though i’m unlikely to return to it faves: Break on through (to the other side), Soul kitchen, The end 63/100
seems okay im not the biggest fan of the doors but this album seems better than the other songs i heard
I like this one. 3 stars.
It’s ok bar one or 2 good songs
I feel like the Doors had a great frontman, but what separated them from their peers was the lack of a bass player. Damn the keys go hard in this debut album. It falters a bit after Light My Fire(side A is spectacular) but the three singles are iconic for a reason.
This has a few huge tracks that I enjoy. I feel like I’m supposed to like it. But I wouldn’t choose to put it on. Meh.
i'm guessing this must have been scandalous when it came out lol. i'm between a 3 and a 4 on it, i enjoyed it more than L.A. Woman though
interesting …. I can appreciate it for what it is, but not my jam… I really liked listening to the less popular tracks - he was such a poet & I had no idea! the psychedelic rock genre is not really for me though!
Kinda mid and just...meh. I liked it and then it fell off for me.
I don't have a man crush on Jim Morrison and I'm kind of over all of that hype. Keyboard. Songs about his penis. Pedophilia. I dunno. I don't want to give it a 3, evn thought I dont really hate it and people are strange though ont on this album is part of my childhood the lost boys. you get a two jim, stay humble. better than black sabbath but not as good as isley brothers. you really should get a two point five. ill round up are you happy?
I don't know...I think I just like this band less and less the further I get away from them. It just sounds....self-indulgent to me know, as an old man. Still giving it three stars because the hits are timeless.
It's expected at this point to mock Jim Morrison for being a drunken, pretentious twat, even if he did plenty to deserve it. But if you wanted to make a case for why he and the Doors deserved the iconic status bestowed upon them, you could do worse than the songs that bookend this album, "Break on Through" and "The End." This band has never done much for me, but those songs are great, even if "The End" is almost a caricature of '60s psychedelic freakout. (I know "Light My Fire" is also iconic, but ehhhh.)
Certainly a classic, but not particularly my cup of tea
it was fine, i was a bit distracted when listening, maybe if i were fully engaged it'd be rated higher
i didn't even realise the album ended. nothing felt noteworthy. Seemed cohesive as an album, but was not an album of bangers
Great instrumentals, great melodies, has flow BUT too much “little girl” mentions.:(
Not a big doors fan but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting.
Good for chilling 3
Cars to Doors. Just going through the vocabulary of a toddler now.
good not great
I feel like I'm a white man who's about to conquer the working day but secretly I want to start a music career. I like the groovier songs like Back Door Man. Some of the rest of the album sounds a lil generic
Probably need to listen more, just felt a little outdated
I am not that into rock, but some songs got in into vibe
Bon album avec de la cohérence musicale, peut être manquant de nuances à mon goût, la voix de Morrison est très cool mais je regrette le manque de paroles marquantes
It's a good album with a few legendary songs, one that overstays its welcome. Strong 3
I liked some songs but some were also boring. On most tracks I didn't really like the pacing because in combination with the slow tempo there was nothing else to make it more interesting. I liked "Break on through", "I looked at you", "Take it as it comes" and "the end" tho. I would say it's pretty mid but some songs stick out. In general just not really my genre but I like trying new things and it positively surprised me. 3/5
Good not great. Some classic songs and the organ sound is very unique but just a little redundant after a while
Liked it more than some others so far, didn't love it though.
Like how this has opened, kind of "Animals" band, lots of use of panning in the headphone. Some of these songs are a little dated for my taste in the early/middle part of the album, just musically uninteresting. This album opened strong but became very experimental in again, an uninteresting way. I feel like "experimental" gets thrown around to describe things that just aren't all that good, or were just ok but in an original way. This album is ok for the most part, with some highs and lows, "Psychedelic Rock" sure. 5/10, average enjoyment.
It was a pretty good rock album, but some songs are a bit forgettable. Overall good, but I dont think its their best.
A solid rock album with Jim Morrisons sexy face gracing the cover. Only recognized two songs but enjoyed the rest of the album as well. Kind of jams that make you feel like a 21st century fox
Love a debut album, and I really like a lot of 60s rock, so this was a fun first album. The song “The End” reminded me of some songs by the Velvet Underground, so I googled whether The Doors inspired any of their music. Apparently, the Velvet Underground HATES the Doors and ABSOLUTELY DID NOT use them as inspiration. I'm learning already.
Ok so maybe I just like all music… I especially liked the piano solo in crystal ship. Light my fire was cool too. Kind of iconic that the last song is called the end. Don’t feel like I need to listen again tho.
good vibes. old school movie in the best way.
Good companion while drawing. Didn’t get bored while listening. Pretty damn groovy. Would probably listen again if I need backdrop music.
Wasn’t bad, but I couldn’t get into it
Maybe Rock is not for me Album’s best : Soul Kitchen/Backdoor Man
Fine album.
Break on through (to the other side) is that one song I’ve heard but didn’t know the name of. Soul kitchen and the crystal ship are not much to note. I like 20th century fox. Alabama song is kinda odd. The little girl comments threw me off. I like the harsh minor second transitions. Light my fire is very catchy and incredibly 1967. I feel like a vampire surfer. The solo section does drag on for forever though Back door man is alright. I looked at you is also not notable. End of the night ^ I do really enjoy take it as it comes. The end is really weird and kind of unsettling. It sounds like what I imagine it’s like to start losing your mind. This album is odd because it has some very generic sounding 60s songs but has some very unique and somewhat unsettling themes in certain songs. I’m unsure if there’s a story in the album as I wasn’t paying too much attention to the lyrics. In terms of quality, I rate it a 6/10. There are some very good and catchy songs and there are some sounds that caught me off guard considering its age, however, most of the songs are repetitious or drag on for forever and are just uninteresting. So personally, I rate it a 4/10 and will probably never listen again unless I want to learn more about the story of the album if there is one.
the only reason i know the doors is because in lady bird lucas hedges says he wants to curl his hair like jim morrison and i like that - i like them keys on break on through - OMG SOUL KITCHEN ive been searching for this song its in like every movie ever i like it a lot - the crystal ship is soooo eerie this whole album could be the soundtrack to a horror film - i can totally see this album inspiring blue oyster cult - alabama song ughhhh i love obscure specific shit like this its so fun - light my fire very cool - okay i did research and jim morrison studied film at UCLA which is effin rad i can't wait to become insane about this album overall very good im gonna do a deep dive later 3.5/5
break on through (to the other side) fyaaaaa intro to the album. loving this voice and gritty guitar. it sounds like hes yelling down a long room. loving that bass line & outro!!!!! soul kitchen i recognize this!!!! gotta look if it was in a movie or something. ok it was in forrest gump. turns out they were inspired by van morrison's "gloria". very groovy song. i am enjoying the vocals and the synth. i think it's synth? i think i hear him vocal doubling. im pretty sure the beatles did that often. the crystal ship change of pace! very magical and i think that i like this range of his voice and style. i like the piano. i already had this song saved in my library, but i don't really recognize it. these outros are so much better than lou reeds...... twentieth century fox haiiillll yesssssss. im BOOGIE-ING. brrrrrrrrr guitar solo take me home. also, he is singing about me heh....... right..... if lou reed wrote on this concept, it would sound like shit. these lyrics are simple yet effective & i am very much enjoying them. alabama song (whiskey bar) i am not enjoying this one. & looking at the lyrics i am not excited to endure this for 3 minutes. yeah did not like that. light my fire hmmmmm mid. fun guitar and bass, lyrics i dont really care. & for SEVEN MINUTES???????? gonna go feed the cats while ts plays. ok im back. loooong solo. kinda fun tho. back door man reading the lyrics why did he feel the need to write about him liking chicken. i like the overall rhythm and melody though. i just remembered one man i had a conversation with at a flea market in new orleans. i was looking at posters of the doors that he had to sell and he told me a story about jim morrison performing in new orleans and he met jim morrison after a show and talked about him. i don't know if the seller was lying or not but it was nice to hear i guess. i looked at you okayyyy i likey. i like the melody. it sounds like a beatles song. yeah essppppp the rasp in "we're on our way" yeaaaahhhhhhooooooooo. got me tapping my foot n shiiiii likkeeeee. end of the night jim morrison is so sexy gah damn. thank yew pinterest! i like this. very calm and soothing. might add it to my snoozy sleepy playlist. very nice. take it as it comes i also had this one already saved. don't recognize it though. organ is giving phantom of the opera haunted mansion realness. i like this song. and i like the lyrics, which is pretty rare. thank you mr. morrison. the end eleven minutes okay 😊 i really like the melody and rhythm of this song. very smooth silky. i think the lyrics are somewhat random but definitely work. yesssss west is the best he gets it. im not gonna add this to a playlist through because 10 minutes is too long. sorry taylor. i thought this album started off very strong, but lacked the farther you listened.
Classic album. Not a huge fan as the album is somewhat monotone and redundant.
interesting gives the vibe of delta dawn mixed with some like beachy rock elements.
Not the easiest listen but not really my genre anyway. I enjoyed the first 3 songs.
It took me 2.5 months and a relisten of this album to get my full thoughts on this. This is without a doubt the best PyschRock album i've ever heard, i don't like the genre so this was a lil treat. also my mum's fav album. I do find that Light My Fire is significantly better then the rest of the album, if it was to THAT quality for all of it i'd probably rate it higher haha.
lowkey listened to it in a random order so it ruined the experience for me and i only realised like 5 songs in, then i couldnt be bothered to listen to it all again so i kinda just stopped listening altogether HAHA, but from the 5 songs i heard it was a pretty fun listen and if i actually bothered to finish it i would've liked it a lot more
Perhaps it’s telling that the most I get involved in this album is when it briefly is just doing Brecht and Weill. It’s perhaps pointing I’m towards what the band would commit to more wholeheartedly in Strange Days, an album that feels like it has so much more of an identity than this one. As it stands a lot of the rest if the album feels more like an incomplete early draft of the many identities the band would adopt over the years. A loose blues act. A brooding pop act. And, unfortunately, a drunken bar band that somehow made it big. I think your fondness for this album is heavily depends on the patience you have for the two epics that shape it. And I’ve learned that I have some but not a lot. As fond as I am of Ray Manzarek’s organ, about 15 minutes into that solo I do sort of just want to tell him to move it along. And that’s generous compared to what I want to say to the band during the most indulgent bits of The End. I liked it all more when listening through the album as a whole but not enough to fully I love the album this time around. Highlights: Alabama Song (whiskey bar)
this album is lowk weird haha faves: break on through (to the other side) new discoveries: light my fire album art: why u looking at me like that
I liked the sound and the numerous short tracks, but I don't know if I'd find myself going back and re-listening. I really liked the first couple of songs. A fun album.
Light My Fire
Solid 60s psychedelic vibe,
good instrumentals
3/5!
I used to hear this album a lot as a kid. Re-listening to it. It’s amazing how much of the heavy lifting break on through and light my fire does.
L’album me touche pas particulièrement mais beaucoup de sons mythiques culturellement (notamment dans les films/pubs)
Pretty good! I had already known a couple of these. Nothing I'll listen to consistently but I can appreciate and enjoy it.
It was good album liked all instruments but I like 2 of out of 11 like instrumental bits too
i kinda liked it, didn’t read much into the lyrics bc i was busy while reproducing it. Isn’t what I usually go for when putting music on, as i dont really listen much of the 20th century besides hiphop and some dad rock music. Overall i liked it, chill but cool and its a different approach for me but not life changing
Chanson préférée : Break on through (the other side)
Typa songs you’d hear in the background of a movie where they’re in a bar but it’s an old one with wooden finishes and pool tables.
Iconic, always a good listen.
A good time
I can, of course, understand why it's here. That does not mean I should find it phonetically pleasing. It is much too plain, too dark and dismal.
Classic
Been meaning to get around to The Doors for a minute and this album was fun! That little organ is doing a lot for me I won't lie!
Some iconic songs but think the album tracks are better on other classic albums.
Nice chaotic feel to it - would sink a bottle of pinot and defeat the evil blackjack dealer to this
Better than I remeber
3.5 Why a 3 you may ask? Well, sounds a little dated; and Morrison comes off a little pretentious at times. I enjoy The Doors, and this album is no exception especially since it’s a trailblazer for modern psych records of its time, but it just doesn’t quite strike a cord for me like it does for others.
I like The Doors. This is fine. It doesn’t excite me or anything.
Oh, man! I've spent my whole life absolutely hating the Doors and Jim Morrison. I found it all so depressing and annoying. His voice sounds like a growl and he has just one sound/tone. (and the keys sounded the same on every song.) Listening to "Break on Through" reminded me of all that. But I'm on a journey through this list and I'm giving everything a chance. To be fair, it's better than I thought. On "The Crystal Ship" he actually sings like a normal person with a fine enough voice. "End of the Night" almost does it too. "Twentieth Century Fox" is hooky enough. Can't understand why people like "The End." Probably the same people that say he's a poet, when most of his lyrics come off like a 20-year old pot smoker. Oh, that's right. He was! I'd listen to it as an instrumental. (Check out Manzanera's AM/PM) I bit the bullet and listened to it all twice. Some is still quite annoying and some ain't so bad. Don't imagine I'll come back to listen to this whole album ever again, but at least I won't have to run to turn any Doors song off the second I hear a few notes, like I've done my whole life. Seems crazy to my mind, but I'm giving this a 3, not a 1 as was expected.
Light My Fire. One of those strange songs which seems to haunt you. I don't mean Joe Dolce Shuddup You Face haunt, more 10CC's I'm Not In Love haunt. Always been there, can't remember a time before it etc. With Light My fire I first heard it through my mother playing Jose Feliciano's version. As a five year old I loved it and for years thought it was his song. Then my grandmother in the early seventies had Shirley Bassey's version and, in an early display of my nascent fascist tendencies, I loudly asserted it was a Jose F song. Then, the dark cynical years of 13-14 descended and some Maroubra "dude" introduced me to this album, and doth spoke "it's really heavy". Which it is, for every Robbie Kreiger inspired Light My Fire there is Jimbo indulging himself with The End. But Break on Through is a groove, and Densmore really shows his drumming chops. He and Robbie are the real stars of this band, they make it happen. With Light My Fire , the old A minor to E minor is given life by Densmore's Latin beat. Soul Kitchen is a knock out, again funky as fuck. So much of the rest of it is, as the Maroubra dude thus spake, "heavy". An interesting and sometimes quite brilliant listen.
God, I totally don't know what to do with the Doors... Morrison is a total pretentious prat and not nearly as deep as he thinks he is, the band are a glorified lounge act... and yet, and yet, THIS record is surprisingly listenable. Most songs are 3 minutes or under, not enough time to outstay their welcome, and the tunes are catchy, the band can swing a little bit, and their dynamic interplay is not too bad. The lyrics are not TOO dumb (for the most part). Light My Fire and The End have a tendency to drag on a bit. I often think about the way Danny Sugerman describes the impact of seeing the early Doors as a 13-year-old boy with ADHD, which is probably the core audience for this record. I really want to hate The Doors, but this album is kinda fun. I can forgive the band for this record. (Footnote: Alfie did point out that the opening of Soul Kitchen sounds a lot like Walking on the Sun by Smashmouth. Just sayin')
A very obvious 1960's sound, for example the organ solo, from this album, but some of it still works in 2025. Break on through and Light my fire are well known classics and still good to listen to. Other tracks, e.g. Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) are full of 1960's psychedelic rock mystery and a bit impenetrable nearly 50 years later unless you're a fan of psychedelic rock.
I am never going to be a big Jim Morrison fan but to be honest on here his mystic shaman act is not quite as over the top as on later records and there is some actual musicality to the songs. The rest of the band is not just there to provide a background to Morrison's convulsions and it is actually quite pleasant psychedelic 60ies pop with plenty of freaky organ work and lots of performative pseudo-spiritual woo woo stuff that only gets really annoying in the final track. Would happily listen to it again some day. Can't believe I am going to give this three stars.
I can't tell one Doors album from the next.
i have known too many insufferable idiots who loved the doors so i never did. a victim of their own success, you might say.
I thought it was good in parts, some songs worked better than others. But as a debut it has more than its fair share of recognisable hits. Soul kitchen was a nice highlight
I hadn’t listened to this before as an album but recognised most of it. I think I finally got The Doors listening to this. As it’s a pretty cool sound all together. A 3.5 rounded down to 3 On the below basis: There was one song I was half listening to and it seemed to be about beckoning little girls to come be seduced, which was grim.
Sure there’s a song or two that I can get down with. But overall I’ve always been confused at people who idolize The Doors. 3/5
Emhh I don't like it
I preferred this to LA Woman but still a bit overrated imo
You can hear the excellence and potential on this record that has a couple classic tracks and also lots of other tracks that seem like templates for better songs on future albums.
Classic rock. Honestly didn't realize Jim Morrison was in the doors.
Not a huge Doors fan, but another killer track to open
Favourite track: Light my Fire
