Reviews (page 12 of 14)
Certainly a decent album, enjoyed it more than the previous Doors album we had on this list. I'm not sure what i'm missing, but I don't understand how these guys are so well revered, or what separates them from their contemporaries. Maybe it's just a style/era of music that doesn't really resonate with me, so I'm not getting that bit of magic/x-factor that really elevates their music. The strengths in this album lay in the drawn-out, almost psychedelic songs, even if these songs did overstay their welcome. Anyways, happy to have listened to a couple Doors albums, don't think I'll be delving back in again though. Slightly strong 3/5
Standard issue psych/rock that didn't do a whole lot to ingratiate me to the aesthetics of the genre. I just get a bit bored. Two and a half. Fave track: Light My Fire
They have such a unique style and it’s hard to deny their power on a bunch of tracks here. I never found myself totally in love with that style and I don’t quite think this completely holds up for me upon each time listening again. Fave track: Soul Kitchen
This was a pretty good album with a lot of classic The Doors songs!
3/5 - lot of fun songs but not very memorable
Boring other than break on through and light my fire. Soft 3
I’m not a huge fan of psychedelic music, but when I listen to it in isolation, it tends to bring me back to the old Spiderman cartoon show, which makes me feel happy! “Break on Through” could be a great pump song, great choice to start the album. Very High 3
Another 60s right ear/left ear separation album. What’s with albums from this time doing this? Was it a quirk of recording? Anyway, I thought this album had all parts that were good when heard in separation. For instance, I thought the keyboard and guitars were great, but it didn’t feel totally cohesive when put together. Maybe it’s due to the right/left audio. Either way, it was a good psychedelic-ish rock album. Maybe not the most memorable out there, but good enough. Favorite track: Break on Through (To the Other Side)
background music except the last song which was atrocious, 3/5
I was a big Doors fan at around 13/14 years old but soon after grew tired of them, particularly this album. Listening to it now is oddly nostalgic. It’s not bad, but still feels immature musically and lyrically. Still rocked out to “Soul Kitchen” and “Crystal Ship” though. Other tunes did not age as well, particularly “Back Door Man”.
Preferable to the last Doors album, for sure.
I see the appeal it has on some people since it is a great record, but it doesn't do it for me. It's just plain and lacks more from a music perspective for me to rate it any higher
While a lot of these songs are bangers and actually fun to listen to - hearing them with 2024 ears a lot of the songs are very creepy and uncomfortably so. In Whisky Bar he’s harping about Little Girls, Back Door Man - and while they are both covers they were chosen and modified. Not even starting with The End, which while back in the day sounded avante garde, it’s a rather lazy worded and rhymed song. This listen to this record made me like the band a whole lot less - even though musically it’s still quite gorgeous. Don’t look too closely at the sausage you’re eating they say.
How do you write and record a song like Alabama Song and thing “yeah this is cool”
Liked the album. The standout song for me was The End.
Over rated
Starts out strongly with notable tracks like break through, and the lowkey semi psychadelic Sound of the album is really good and well maintained throughout. Sonically it is really consistent and sounds good and like it’s an album the whole way through Some forgettable moments throughout. The middle of the album isn’t as good and as the harpsichord/high pitched pipe sounds get annoying during the middle of the album. All the guitar solos were really good and the album wouldve benefited more from more guitar featuring. Ending is pretty good
Simple/minimized lead guitars compared to other rock bands I've listened to - heavier emphasis on bass + keys (rhythm). Very easy to listen to / relax to. The second half of the album (light my fire onwards) was more enjoyable than the first half.
*I want to like this album more than I do. There’s nothing wrong with it, it just didn’t speak to me. Will listen again and reevaluate.*
No great, not terrible. I think that the keyboards as lead instrument is more interesting than Jim Morrison.
Light my Fire is a great track, especially the organ/guitar-led meandering jam in the middle. The rest of the album is a big meh from me, but maybe you had to be there. The mixing and balance between the band is excellent, with every part contributing without being too busy, but a lot of the songwriting just doesn't hit for me. I'm pretty sure The End was made up entirely on the spot and recorded in one take without any critical review.
I wanted to like the whole album more than I did. Light my fire is a time machine, a psychedelic trip back to a time and place long gone but never forgotten. Unfortunately I'm not sure all the other songs have aged as well.
I like The Doors, they're unproblematic
Liked it but not that much
Felt like an important album. Forgot that the last two minutes of “The End” was just Morrison screaming the F word over and over again. Sorry sophomore class. Eek.
Second Doors album, second time I groaned about having to listen to it, second time I've been pleasantly surprised. Maybe I don't dislike the Doors, maybe I just disliked the kids in college who were *really* into the Doors.
I tired of The Doors sound long ago. I mean, I like the band, but in general find them too Jim Morrison-y. Aside from two all-time classics in Light My Fire and Break On Through, I think most songs here are just OK.
Cool old trippy
Very hit or miss album, I liked Break On Through, Soul Kitchen and Light My Fire. The rest were forgettable. Gets an extra half a star for ending the album with "This is the end" tho.
First listen I was really not feeling it, but luckily I gave it another go. This must have slapped in the '60s and '70s tbh, and while the fact that it's so ancient should be taken into consideration when rating, I can't fully get on board with this album. I feel like it's very inconsistent. Half of the album is alright with a couple of great songs, but half are just too weird and kind of boring.
Not really big on the organs, still had some all time songs that carried it for my
I really like the Door actually. This is something I’d play when doing chores or in the background. Great instrumentals and guitar. Very mellow too.
Not a bog Doors fan. Just not into that style.
Much prefer the Doors over LZ, yesterday's featured group. The edgier side of 60's Rock.
Another just alright album!
It's a comfort food, the Doors. The sound, spangly vocals, sense of time and place that has now gone, a brittle brilliant USA that had hopeful opportunity in abundance. There is only a joy with this re-listening, familiar journeys of mine with the music of this album. It passed pleasingly and well. Not quite 4 stars, but almost.
I decided to give this a listen with open ears, in spite of my preconceived notions of the Doors, and Morrison in particular. It starts all right, Break on Through is a decent enough track with fun keyboards. Soul Kitchen is fun (I prefer the X cover), but by the time we got to Crystal Ship I was starting to remember what I don't like about this band. The lyrics are abysmal. Anyone who considers Jim Morrison a poet probably isn't really listening. Stupid, amateurish and forced, the lyrics really take me out of it. The music is fine. It doesn't drive me wild, but it's not offensive in anyway. A little noodly at times, but that's a given for the beginning of the psychedelic era. I just don't find a lot on this LP that gets me excited. I don't hate it like I've said for years, but I don't think it's ever going to be in my regular listening rotation.
Ja mislim da je okej
In general, not my taste. I love weird music more than the next guy, but this stuff was weird. Also, musically I don’t love this style of early pre-rock type music. Maybe if I sat down with the lyrics 1,000 days from now, I’ll have changed my mind.
Solid
Some songs were discordant and could do with tightening up. The first song was not a great opening to the album and made me want to turn it off immediately and shove balls of broccoli in my ears. Some songs such as the second were banging and overall the album was tasty enough to garner a 3. Thank you for coming to my TED talk
Mítico!!!
Ha estado bien. Me han gustado mucho Twentieth Century Fox y Alabama Song.
Classic sounds, real loose.
Good, but dated.
One of the first “classics” I owned. My guess before listening is that the first half is still pretty good and the second half isn’t. Open question: will “The End” be Maggie’s new favorite song? Listening: Soul Kitchen is still my favorite. Twentieth Century Fox still exemplifies the band’s worst tendencies (dumb lyrics, coasting on Morrison’s sexuality). Ugh I forgot about “show me the way to the next little girl” in Whisky Bar. If I remember correctly, the single version of Light My Fire doesn’t have the extended organ solo and is therefore a million times better. As I remembered/suspected, this is essentially three classic songs (Break on Through, Soul Kitchen, Light My Fire) surrounded by a bunch of filler. (Soul Kitchen wasn’t even a single, so maybe my opinion of that song does not reflect a critical consensus.) The second half before The End feels entirely like an afterthought, and The End is still one of the weirdest songs on a pop record ever. In a generous light, that song is daring and transgressive, but I mostly think it’s self-indulgent and not nearly as smart as it thinks it is. (See also: this band in general.) This album definitely feels like one you’d buy because you heard two great songs on the radio—probably what I did, essentially, as a tween—and then end up feeling disappointed because little else on the record comes close to that standard.
Never got the obsession with this band. Music is good, but I can't stand Jim Morrison's voice.
Ok.
interesting, but doesnt make my heart go doki-doki + organ gets annoying Significant 33/99 undoubtedly Liked 16/99 Added 4/99 YNN
Good memories, when I listened to his albums. Morrison Hotel was my favorite. Not into them any longer.
Not a big Doors fan. Listening to this album was new to me. It is classic Doors. Glad I listened to the whole thing, not sure I would do it again.
Quite enjoyed the overall vibe and some classic tunes. I don't love the proggy, organ-led numbers or the long stonery jams. It's probably not quite up my street but I am glad to have given it a couple of listens and I do get the hype, at least at the time. 14/1001
Two classic songs that I’ve loved since I was a kid clicking through my parents’ iTunes library. There were other songs that I liked, but that did not have the same trance quality and upbeat organ(?). But overall liked the feel that I got from listening and do enjoy this genre
The doors made this album
Good but too much for me all at once. It's the synthesizer.
Some albums are so good their more problematic aspects can be overlooked. Not this one. The Doors are mid.
same as I remember it
aa
I can hear where modern pop songs get influence from bc of this album. I like the interesting percussion. Fav songs twentieth century fox and light my fire
Fine, atmospheric and with beautiful production but it doesn't work for me lyrically. Again, it's that decision whether to rate based on how much I enjoyed listening or the context in which it was created. I'm going to say it's just fine.
after reading Morrison's poetry book i realized he is not good at writing so this album is truly carried by Ray
Not bad! I enjoyed the songs that I was familiar with but wasn’t totally blown away. I had heard the Alabama song at karaoke but never knew it was the doors. Will probably listen to this again.
This is a nostalgia album for me. I was way into the doors back in high school so a lot of these songs are baked into my memory. Not everything on here was great, definitely some duds. I haven’t listened to the doors in a minute but I still dig a few songs on this one. Break on through starts the album off with a bang. The rest of the first half is solid. The second half is where it starts to fall off for me. Most of the songs after light my fire are duds. The End being the exception, that song rips.
Some big skips on this record. It's okay
A handful of good tracks and a handful of mehhhh
These guys are so boring, I can't believe The End is so popular. At least Break on Through and Light My Fire are actually good.
Sehr mutig und experimentell für das Jahr 1967. Nicht so mein Fall aber sehr respektabel.
An absolute classic
automatically gets points in my book bc jim morrison is hot on the cover break on through (to the other side) is v good the vibe shift from soul kitchen to the crystal ship was jarring same thing w twentieth century fox maybe the crystal ship is out of place "no tears, no fears, no ruined years, no clocks" goes crazy oompa loompa beat on alabama song (whiskey bar) "i eat more chicken than any man ever seen" ok everything between light my fire and end of the night sounds the same end of the night is the best song so far, break on through is 2nd ok actually take it as it comes is also v good maybe that's 1st, end of the night 2nd god damn the end is good too, solid 4th place final verdict: break on through and the last 3 songs were the highlights, everything else was forgettable (except for light my fire bc everybody knows it)
very good background music but I didn't fw any of the songs I'm not too fond of eleven-minute songs -1 I was told once that I looked like Jim Morrison before it was cool :( -1
Was good, some big songs on there, although the sound of the organ was starting to grate a little by the end
The Doors are great. Also it took me 42 years to realize just how creepy “show me the way to the next little girl” truly is. 😬
could i write poetry to it? y
ride the snake to the lake 🤷
mixed better than the morrison hotel, otherwise identical to that album. except for 'break on through'. couldn't tell any other song apart on the entire album
Honestly kind of pretentious? kind of repetitive, music for the guys who called me slurs in high school
Kul, overrates, razumem da je bilo revolucionarno po tekstovima ali not my cup of tea
Underwhelmed. A little bit samey. Some great keyboard work. I like it but it’s not amazing
Break on Through und Light my Fire kenne ich tatsächlich, alle anderen sind so ... na ja
I don't think The Doors on here would be anything special without the organ, but also the organ usage seems too simple and gets annoying at times. This music isn't bad but there are many classic rock albums I like more.
Paar ijzersterke nummers
The Doors just don't stand out to me, probably since they're super famous and I've heard them throughout my whole life
I loved this record in high school, but I don’t feel the same admiration today. Jim Morrison is just a little overwrought to me now.
Eh
Tony Hawks Underground 2, Break on Through (To the Other Side), amazing song. Soul Kitchen is also great. The rest did not stick as much with me. The album started out amazing, but digressed.
Everything so far sounds almost the same. The first album was the only one that I still consider good somehow.
Weird album how some songs sounded progressive and then others were typical doo whop songs
Bangers banged - others were fine
Ok so, I respect this record and its super influential, but aside from a couple highlights, I think this is just ok.
感覺吉姆莫里森唱歌老不在調上or和伴奏各搞各的。以及,我真的受不了low quality了,high quality destroyed music的迷思離我遠去了。
7/10 Highlights: Break on Through The Crystal Ship The End
Great, more boomer rock, but at least this was a band I listened to in my youth. I was just the right age when the Oliver Stone movie came out to get sucked into Doors-mania. I bought the tapes, read the bio, even made an oil painting of Jim Morrison in art class. Listening now with fresh ears, this is pretty corny. I like the organ-heavy production, but the spell is broken every time Jim Morrison starts yawlping his way on the track with his embarrassing poetry. It’s almost stupid enough to sound like parody and I can enjoy it on that level, kind of like how I have to listen to his obvious acolyte, Danzig.
First time listening to this. Started off really well. Can really hear where the Stooges got their inspiration from, though I must say that I think they perfected it. Was doing great until Alabama song which felt so out of place and almost ruined the vibe. Light my Fire brought it back up before the second half went and ruined it again. By the time The End came on I was completely unenthused. Would have sounded much better if it followed some bangers. First half (excl Alabama) 4* Second half 2* Rounding up to 3.5* considering how early this was. Still pretty groundbreaking despite the second half.
6/10 A mixed bag, mostly bad. The attempts at pop and more excruciatingly, blues, are mediocre at best. HOWEVER, the two vibey, definitively psychedelic songs , Light My Fire and, especially, The End are great and where this all comes together. The half baked poetry works so well in the end, who cares if he was play acting being a shaman? If one acts hard enough one will occasionally become that thing, inhabit it. The End also shows kriger to be a real progenitor of raga-inflected psych guitar. People are still mining this vein. But it can’t be overstated how the absolute pillar of this band is the organist Manzurich. To myself the circus organ lines of Light My Fire were a definitive sound of the 60s. I doubt that this band could have made it nearly anywhere without him holding it all down.
Pas mal
ya know, the doors just never really did it for me.
There's some decent songs on this album, but none that get me to get The Doors. I know they were influential, but they're not great in my opinion. 3/5
This album was quite unique at its time super easy listening great to smoke and listen to. There were a few jam sessions that went a little too long but over all i would listen to this again 3.5/5
Contreversially I thought this album was good but not amazing. Started off pretty poor for me but I did enjoy it as I went further into the album. You can tell they're good musicians but it's not quite my kind of thing. Stand out songs: The Crystal Ship, I looked at you, Take it as it comes.
Enjoyed this, some great classic rock.
Pretty good, very 60s. Wouldn't really listen to it for fun but had some cool parts. Kind of reminds me of Scooby-Doo. BT - The Crystal Ship - Alabama Song - Light My Fire - The End
it's cool
Not my style
Little boring
Classic
Stand by what I said about Morrison Hotel (douchebag jock music that is intellectual in the way your 13-year-old poetry is intellectual), but there are at least 2 great tunes on here (not Light my Fire), plus a bonus star for the Apocalypse Now tie-in and the general death-of-the-60s and harbinger-of-worse-times-ahead vibes.
AJ: I like a few doors songs. More than Cat for sure. 3. Now can we talk about the rock & roll album Paranoid by the British band Black motherfucking Sabbath!? Fucking RIPPAH. Absolute RIPPAH. Oh my satan. Should’ve been a 5. Forgive me, sweet Catherine. I’ve sinned. HOT DAMN. ROCK & ROLL. Cat: drunken buffoons. Kinda like Soul Kitchen. AJ: I like soul kitchen too
Instantly recognizable for every single track. I find it so interesting that the Doors are really no longer listened to. You will almost never hear a Doors track played anywhere. This album is so iconic that I doubt I can add anything to the probably widely available critiques.
Blue shag carpet and hippie wallpaper. This is the perfect album while getting baked at your parents house before they get home from work. There was a time that this would've been a straight five, but time marches on and seems stuck in that shag carpeting. Not to fret, there's some gold hidden in there along with some stray roach clips. Soul Kitchen is great and The End has gotta be the Doors best song ever recorded. The rest has outlived itself.
The Doors albums on the list are their debut (here), their final album with Jim Morrison before his death (nearly 200 albums ago), and "Morrison Hotel," (which we have yet to receive). I had not realized that they continued to make music after Morrison died, or that the first post-Morrison album was strangely titled "Other Voices." It's surprising, because Morrison was clearly the driving force behind the band's sound and their lasting impact. Well, that and the organ. Ray Manzarek's organ playing is the other thing I most associate with the Doors' sound. But without Morrison, I think the organ might drive me crazy. It works in smaller doses - "Break on Through" is great and knows when to stop, unlike "Light My Fire," which is great for its vocals but the full version (not the trimmed radio edit) goes overboard with organ solos. Beyond the two hits, "The Doors" is a bit of a mixed bag. "Soul Kitchen" keeps up the energy after "Break on Through" with solid blues rock. Then "The Crystal Ship" turns to the psychedelic, and the energy fades, and "Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)" amps up the weirdness. "The End" certainly has its moments, but despite what the title says, seems to never end. Overall, I prefer "L.A. Woman," and I'm interested to see where "Morrison Hotel," with less known hits, will fall. "L.A. Woman" was 4-star. This is probably too good and classic to be a 3, but it's a high 3; 7 out of 10, a true 4 if it had less psychedelic excess.
The Doors are a band that I've always been happy to leave be and let them carry on with whatever it was they were doing. Even on today's listen, where I was actively trying to quantify what I was listening to and how it made me feel, I'm at a loss for how to describe my disinterest. Jim Morrison is a charismatic presence. Ray Manzarek crafted his own sound on the organ/keys. The rest of the band... I could pick things apart but it's something about the sum of the parts that just leaves me flat. It's like these guys were the keepers of some guarded mystery that I am perfectly content not knowing anything about.
The Doors…less varied and innovative than The Beatles, less heavy than Sabbath. Jim Morrison has his charm, and I’m sure this was mind shattering only four days into 1967. But yeah, sometimes it just feels meandering, and the lyrics aren’t so profound if you’re not high. Love The Crystal Ship and Alabama Song.
Classic
It’s fine. More classic rock I am burnt out on due to over exposure. Silver lining: without The Doors we wouldn’t have Jimmy Fallon’s great version of Reading Rainbow’s theme song. I had a teacher in high school who thought I looked just like The Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek.
Not the biggest fan of the Doors, but there’s definitely some good stuff here. I really enjoy The Crystal Ship and End of the Night, and the band grooves along nicely on most of these tracks. A prime example of what divides me on this is The End, which I love when it’s the band doing a VU style jam, but then Jim Morrison is all Father? Yes, Son? I want to kill you. Anyway pretty middle of the road stuff for me. I was pleased to learn that Break On Through was edited for the radio!
I’ve never liked Jim Morrison and his whole thing. I do not like his lyrics or his singing. I have always like Ray Manzarek and his organ stuff, though. This had some solid music on it.
Iha jees! Muutama parempi biisi löyty myös.
Can't say I'm a Doors fan but for a debut album, this was pretty amazing. Most of the songs turned out to be big hits. I still get annoyed by the electric organ and can't say I have much, if anything downloaded by these guys, but I have to give props to his album. Besides your big radio songs, Break on Through, Light My Fires and Twentieth Century Fox, there are a few hidden gems. Hidden is the sense, I'm not a fan and not sure if these were hits or not. Anyway, really liked Soul Kitchen and Alabama Song. I'm sure Alabama fans were looking for a Whiskey bar Saturday night! Haha. Suck it Tide. My personal favorite off the album is Back Door Man. Just a good tune. And who doesn't think Apocalypse Now where they here The End? It's been very long time sine I've seen the movie, maybe time to revisit? Overall, a very good album from a band I'm not a big fan. I enjoyed my listens and will give a 3.5. Closer to 4 if that damn electric organ didn't drive me crazy after awhile. 3
3.5 The first and only Doors album I ever owned on CD, and one I used to listen to pretty frequently in my early teenage years. I haven’t really returned to it since though, and I’m not sure exactly why that is. I still think Jim Morrison is a great lyricist and vocalist after all these years, but I think something about the keyboard-driven sound of this album hasn’t held up quite as well with my musical taste. Listening to now, as a whole, yeah, it’s not as great as I remember or was hoping it to be. In many ways it’s creepier than I remember with tracks like Alabama Song, Take It As It Comes, and Back Door Man (might just be dirty-minded with that last one there), but that all to say, the absolute greatness of songs like Break on Through, The End, Light My Fire, and Soul Kitchen can’t be understated. Those four songs may sum up the group best out of anything across their catalog, and 55 years later they’re still among the most synonymous with the group. I mean, from the very first note Break on Through is instantly recognizable, and that chorus? Explosive. Right out of the gate the group came swinging with what might very well be the best and most iconic track of their career. And then you have The End that’s the opposite in many ways - mellow and slow to reveal its charm, but once it does, the ambience of the track is unlike anything else. If your group is able to put out a twelve-minute song and have it be one of your best, you’re doing something right - even if it involves murdering your father and having sex with your mother. Anyway, the rest of the stuff on the album is just kind of okay. It never drags, which is good, but there’s nothing I feel that’s worth re-visiting outside of the four songs mentioned above. Twentieth Century Fox is a song I remember really liking in my mentioned teenage Doors era, but it didn’t do much for me here, and once again I gotta say Alabama Song in particular I found to be kind of an abomination. Great debut, but not quite an all-time great album, though shoutout to my favorite cover band Crystal Shit. I hope these guys have a good sense of humor and don’t take them into court.
maybe I just don't get it but this doesn't really grab me. It's not bad per se but it's not super fantastic other than its highlights. best tracks: break on through, light my fire, soul kitchen
It’s a classic but it was interesting to hear all the guitar mistakes listening closely.
Not terrible. At least half of it was enjoyable.
Not a fan of their keyboard sound
Listened Before? Y Undeniably influential. A very solid album. Light My Fire does NOT need to be 7 minutes.. The End is my favorite Doors song, and it's on this one so that's nice. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: The End
This is music that I would describe as late 60's or early 70's music. It sounds like something that would be in an Austin Powers movie or something. Honestly, despite being an American band, this sounds like British people trying to sound American. It's alright I guess. Nothing to write home about A solid 3/5
Big hits: Break On Through (to the other side); Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar) (circus feel); Light My Fire; The End (featured in the intro of Apocalypse Now)
1967 rock underground that becomes mainstream Regained fame in the 80s, when "the end" is used in the movie "Apocalypse Now". Otherworldly and dangerous, trippy but based in garage with an affinity for blues and hard rock. They inspired Iggy Pop. My thoughts: I've always thought that "The Doors" were not a band for me. Listening to this album has somehow confirmed my opinion but, at the same time, I have realised I appreciate them more than I like to admit. I can finally pinpoint what I don't like: I am really not a big fan of the organ and the more trippy sounds, but somehow I love the Beatles' more experimental albums like "Srgt pepper's lonely hearts club band". Maybe I'll change my mind with a second listen?
3.5, liked the instrumentation a lot
I can’t argue about the few bops on here, no doubt. BUT, The Doors are just still not an album band for me. Y’all can hate me all you want.
Imagine rock-'n'-rollin' to this in '67 🤠
Lots of hits that you'll recognize from TV shows, commercials, and movies. Was never a huge Jim Morrison fan and there's just too much Vox Organ sound on this album.
Cool enough. I really like Light My Fire. Good organ playing. Tad overrated.
A combination of the iconic and some forgettable filler
You can hear a lot of future psychedelic rock. Came out much earlier than I thought.
Weird muted sound throughout, doesn’t sound like recording was very high quality, which isn’t shocking for the time but is for such a big time album. Music itself is solid
Mid
Decent, but not a band I love, and only a handful of good songs.
To put this review in proper context- I've never dropped acid before. Alright now that that's out of the way, it should be easier to understand why I never went through a Doors phase in college or while trying to expand my music knowledge and tastes. I always liked Peace Frog, Riders on the Storm (Mostly because of that Snoop Dogg version from Need For Speed Underground 2, but I digress), and Roadhouse Blues- there's no denying it, The Doors have hits. But even in recognizing those hits and the insanely talented Ray Manzarek, I never had an AHA moment with them like other bands. It is probably because I'm a shitty musician and have 0 blues chops, so even if I can say I understand why they are hailed as a great band, I never fully wrapped my head around it. And honestly they felt dated anytime I tried to get into them. If you play some other records from the time- The Velvet Underground, Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin a few years later, I know that music IS old, but it hardly ever feels that way, somehow they feel fresh and relevant. And unlike the Beatles or Rolling Stones, or Chuck Berry which are even older, at least most of their songs are fun. The blues basis keeps the Doors more palatable than some other psychadelic acts, but am I the only one who ever wonders who that genre was even for? I guess white people from the 60s who hadn't heard Hendrix yet, but I digress. The point is, when I looked at it through that lens and preconceived notions, I risked missing the point of revisiting an album. So I went in with a clean slate. And honestly, it made this record fun to listen to. When I tried not taking it too seriously, it made me open to lot of the cool things they did on these tracks. First off- right from the get go, Break on Through is one of the greatest opening tracks to a record, period. The explosiveness of the final 40 seconds. Also Soul Kitchen is fucking sick. From an iconic keyboard riff, tasty guitar licks, and the yelps and range of Morrison's vocals- it's just a terrific rock song. And the lyrics- any band that talks about Pork and Beans is alright by me. (Ride or Die for Weezer) Worst Song: Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)- Everything about this song is terrible. Best Song: Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)- Everything about this song is SO terrible that it is hysterical and brilliant that it made it on this record, and that the record went on to be a commercial success.
A lot of fun was had on the keys in this album. I don’t mind it. I like the sonic landscape they make. Oh na he fucked his mom in Track 11, bro is wild. Overall the first half had a couple good tracks and the sound is pretty consistent and cohesive. I def like this more bc of my nerdgasam about Francis ford Coppola and the final track.
The doors have a super distinct sound. The organ/harpsichord or whatever it is. The dark, dramatic vocals. The overall mysterious vibe it all creates. Very cool and sexy. For some reason that sound doesn’t really do a ton for me. Imo break on through is the best here and it’s not even close. Then soul kitchen and light my fire are pretty good. Other than that, nothing really interests me here. It’s not bad though. I can’t really explain how I feel about their sound, but it’s not something I’ll be going out of my way to listen to again. Best: break on through, light my fire, soul kitchen Mmm: BREAK ON THROUGH TO THE OTHER SIDE BREAK ON THROUGH TO THE OTHER SIDE
A classic album, for sure; and I can see how it was monumental in its day. But now it’s not my favorite.
BREAK ON THROUGH TO THE SLIP N' SLIDE!! I feel like these songs have been woven into the background of my life so much that I almost don't even recognize it as music anymore; more just like people in an airport talking. I don't know them, they don't know me, but we're both there doing our separate things. I still like "The End." To me, it's the ultimate Doors song. And then the rest is just weird music you might hear at a Renaissance Faire and the occasional blues-rocker.
This was alright. I like the organ + the song “Take It As It Comes”.
More like The Boors, am I right? This is classic rock everyone has heard before. The music is fine, some interesting stuff, nothing bad here. Really good for a debut album, just not my favorite band. Fave Songs: Light My Fire and The End
It's the doors. They're fine.
Pompous, not as clever as Jim Morrison intended. This is why drugs are a bad idea, kids. Slightly better than LA Woman.
Classic, not the biggest fan
Break in Through and Light My Fire are amazing songs but the album doesn’t do much for me from there. Alabama Song annoys me to no end. Maybe it’s a great album, just not my thing.
I’ll admit I did not listen to the whole album. I did not need to hear mono and live versions of the tracks. The famous songs are good - the other songs not so. Sorry super fans, I don’t get the hype.
It was good album and I completely understand why it's revered and respected but I don't completely vibe with the synths and constant, haunting vocals.
A banger or two
3.4/5
brings back memories of my HS teacher playing this for us in our 3D CAD class
Jim Morrison is overrated
Good
First time sitting down and listening to. Doors album. Sounded good. Like what I think I expected. Songs were fun but the few keyboard solos were a bit shrill.
Good album, very close to a four if some of the last few songs were better but strong 3
Thought it was a solid album, but no song particularly stood out. I think the ones I liked the most were Whisky Bar and Light My Fire
Fine. The album opens strong with "Break on Through" - a high energy rock song that really got me dancing on my toes (& I really love that rock organ!). However, from there the album really wears on me. I don't know if it's just a question of era, but I don't believe a word the lead singer sings - it seems too affected to me. I listened to the album twice through, and it never got better to me.
Break On Through is such a great song. I’ve heard that what separates a good rock song from a great one is the management and buildup of intensity (Everclear’s “Santa Monica” is a great example). But Break on Through builds up super quick to the punch line, and I love it. And it sounds like the perfect soundtrack to every 60s movie. Light My Fire does too. But that’s about it. The rest are just okay. Twentieth Century Fox was familiar, but that doesn’t make it enjoyable. The Doors just aren’t my thing. I did like Soul Kitchen. In fact, I always liked Smash Mouth’s “Walking on the Sun”, but now I realize it’s just a complete rip off of Soul Kitchen from this album. Soul Kitchen feels more authentic. Between a 2 and 3, but Break On Through makes it round up for me.
Unique sound with the keyboard but some of the songs (Alabama song) are simply not great. Glad I listened to it but not a game changer.
I liked it! I’m intrigued. I’m eager to hear more from the Doors. Some of the songs give you this offbeat, unsettled feeling. You get the sense that there’s something odd about Jim Morrison. He’s not immediately scannable. Like there’s something brewing under the surface. I’m only getting a quick look with an album that has a couple of standouts, but is mostly a mood. Where do they go next? (No spoilers). 3/5
"Break on Through" and "Light My Fire" are excellent. They have such a recognizable sound, and really paint a picture of a certain LA stereotype. Some of these songs are trash (looking at you, "Alabama Song"), and overall a mixed bag. In the end, it's an iconic debut from an iconic band.
it's always fascinating when an artist releases their debut album and knew exactly at that moment what they wanted to do. this self-titled album contains that very psychedelic rock sound that the doors cultivated. i knew a good amount of these songs already, due to my upbringing on classic rock radio, but i was struck how progressive the doors could be. most of their songs are under or around three minutes, but their two longer songs show their intrigue in experimentation. the keyboard instrumental in "light my fire" is a perfect example of this. mostly, psychedelic rock isn't for me. it's kind of too weird for me! the doors' hits are undoubtedly good, but with the non-hits being too different to enjoy, sometimes i wonder if i don't like them as much because i did not live through the sixties. no matter--still a worthy entry to this albums project.
Last song was cool. First song is a classic. Didn’t particularly fall in love with anything.
Wasn't expecting to like it but it was probably better than expected.
Listening to this as an adult I realize that The Doors have a certain X factor that I don’t know if I can get down with. It’s just a hits for me.
Jim Morrison has this effortless swagger when it comes to his singing, this is a pretty good album to listen to while driving to the beach in the sweltering heat. Interesting instrumentation throughout, but both Light My Fire and The End are way too long and could have been easily trimmed.
3 Good listening
its psych ish blues rock. youve heard it no doubt. i enjoyed it. its not bad at all. glad 11 minute tracks exist. yeehaw.
Probably not my first choice for albums by The Doors. That being said, I'm into it, given that I'd been indoctrinated from a young age. The highs are all-timers, but the lows are kind of monotonous and otherwise uninteresting. I love how they've worked the organ into it, and while I can't really imagine putting this record on to just listen to it as a standalone activity, it still actually feels kind of cohesive. Standouts: Break On Through (To the Other Side), Light My Fire, Back Door Man, The End
Puertas
More Doors! Preferred LA Women but this was still good. Enjoyed the weirder tracks the most.
Pretty good but didn’t love any particular song
This was fine I didn't really have feelings either way on this one
Tosi hyvä, vaikka biisit kuullostaa samanlaiselta, rento, vika biisi kiroilua, jee!
I've always written off The Doors as just another psychedelic rock band with 6 minute acid induced organ solos throughout most of their music, but after listening to this self titled debut album, boy was I wrong. They are so much more than that. Yes, those organ solos do exist (in Light My Fire for example), but there is also many songs that are less than 3 minutes long, and have funky, jazzy, bluesy feels to them with typical 60s rock overtones. The addition of an electric organ was, at the time, revolutionary to the genre of rock, and led to many other bands doing the same thing. Jim Morrison had such a unique singing voice. Some of his vocals may make more sense when high on psychedelics, but one can definately appreciate the magnitude of this album, even when sober. I was worried about the song The End when it started playing and I saw an almost 12 minute run time, but the solos are kept short in it, and Jim keeps the song flowing well throughout, making the time fly by (the song doesn't go on so long that it becomes stale). Overall, impressed with this album. It has opened my eyes to more of what The Doors were. Favourite songs: Break on Through (To The Other Side), Soul Kitchen, Back Door Man, Twentieth Century Fox, Light My Fire, The End Least favourite songs: Alabama Song (Whisky Bar), The Crystal Ship 3/5
Favorite song: Break on Through (To the Other Side)
Break on through is a great song, the rest of this album really drags.
Also the second Doors album in this experient leaves me kinda cold. Just personally not my vibe, the songs are too similar and the concept of this relaxed half singing half speaking by Jim doesnt appeal to me
A mix desse album é bem diferente dos padrões atuais, foi um pouco difícil de me acostumar, mas é uma parada bem orgânica, como se eu estivesse ouvindo uma banda no palco mesmo. No geral, é bem interessante, mas maçante. 6/10 Músicas favoritas: Break on Through Alabama Song Back Door Man Light My Fire
Good album. Still not a fan of the Doors, but I see why some people love the music.
Some iconic hits, but also plenty of filler. The poetry is indeed stupid, but only noticeably so on The End.
I've always been pretty indifferent to the Doors. Sure, Morrison's voice is distinctive, and they've got a few classic songs, but overall ... *shrug* I was hoping that listening to this album would enlighten me, but my opinion remains unchanged. They're fine, but my life wouldn't be any different if they'd never cut an album.
I "discovered" them back in my high school days back when Val Kilmer was trying to embody Jim Morrison on the silver screen, listened to the morning noon and night it seemed. Today I discovered that over the decades I've gotten over it. Nice trip down memory lane. A few songs I still really dug, but overall, tastes have changed.
not new for me
A classic, but a bit samey, apart from the classics, riders on the storm, the end, and touch me baby. Nice to recall but I was never a massive fan.
Solid.
nice debut, amazing sound, you gotta give it to the Doors, they knew how to explore new territories
Never been a fan, possibly the lack of a formal bassist. It's fine, overly repetitive in places and corny bar music in others. Separated from Apocalypses Now, 'The End' is a boring drone, 'Light My Fire' and 'Break On Through' still stand up though.
This is a tough album to rate - the hits are fuckin masterpieces, but there's also a lot of bland 60s psychedelic drivel. I want to give it both a 5 and a 1. Oh and fuck Jim Morrison's status as anything more than some idiot junkie. I think TISM said it best: "your mysticism is a load of shit, and so are all the girls you've rooted". 3/5.
Leuk, niet weggeblazen.
The magic is not there as much as I remember it
I used to love the Doors when I was younger. I can't say I like them as much, but Break on Through and The End are still great songs.
An iconic cornerstone of the psychedelic musical genre. I'm rating this a bit lower than what I suspect the norm is, only because I'm not a big fan of the group, but that is mostly just a matter of personal taste.
I’m not a big Doors fan by any stretch, but you can’t deny the power of The End.
Doors on aina ollut mulle 3/5. The End on kyllä kaunis ja nostalginen.
Onhan tämäkin klassikko mut en kyllä koskaan oo juurikaan välittänyt Doorsista. Crystal Ship on ihan hyvä biisi ja Light My Fire meemikäs, joten annetaan nyt 3/5
Somewhat boring and repetitive. They do a good job at creating a certain mood and I can see why people like them. The keyboard solo in "Light My Fire" is hot garbage.
eh
Hefði verið fjórar hefði ég ekki svona svakalegt ofnæmi fyrir Viskílaginu. Annars mjög nett hlustun á hljómsveit sem ég hef ekki hlustað á mjög lengi.
60’s noodling. How did they ever get so much clout?
This is pretty cool
These guys were crazy. Some drugged out psychedelia to the extreme.
Meh
Histórico, com praticamente todos os hits. Só que pra mim o teclado é excessivo
not the end, but The End of the beginning
Best use of an organ since Johnny Holmes
Organ player is great, I'd argue he defines The Doors just as much as Jim Morrison does. Never was really a big fan of The Doors Favorite Song - Soul Kitchen
What? No riders on the storm? Solid first album. It has sure made waves through time.
3.5
Morrison is a charismatic front-man, and this album has some really quality psych rock. I think this is a bit inconsistent or at least not as appealing as some of the other psych being done at the time but the doors had a really wild yet refined style to them. The singles pop out here, even the ones i didn't know were singles, and the rest kind of fall by the wayside. Not that they're bad songs or anything but from the opener to light my fire to the closer the famous songs really cast a show.
I don't care for The Doors all that much, but this is a solid album.
Jim Morrison’s voice was so unusual and haunting, it always makes me sad that he died young and we couldn’t see where he would go. Not my favorite album but I love the use of keyboard in their music.
3 for deserving to be on the list. Was never a fan of the heavy keyboards.
Toppen, klassisk proggig rock.
3.5/5 - This is better than the first doors album!
Show me the way to the next whiskyyy barrr. Oh don't ask whyyyy 3.5/5
I wasn't the biggest fan of this one. Wasn't bad or anything, I just didn't really dig it. I'm just not a huge fan of the electric keyboard sound, sad to say. Not to say it never worked for me, just not super often.
Played this to death in my late teens, then moved on. Musically it’s great, lyrically I just don’t quite get it anymore, perhaps a little too metaphorical for me now!
Turns out I don’t don’t hate the Doors music, just Jim M. A Doors instrumental album would be top notch.
I like the way he rhymes "friend" with "end" and "fire" with "fire."
LA Woman or bust
3.0 - It’s The Doors, playing The Doors songs.
I liked this better than the other The Doors album that I listened to (L.A. Woman). But still It feels somewhat stale I don't know if it's just me not liking the style or if its something else. But I will say that "The End" is a really cool song, but not enough to make it a great album for me. Overall it did not grip me and engage me in the sound. Rating: 7/10
It just swept through my ears like a breeze...
This exceeded my expectations. I had always heard that the Doors are one of the most overrated bands of all time. However, I quite enjoyed this. Maybe still overrated, but perfectly decent. 3.5/5.
72. The Doors - The Doors 11 tracks. I love singing/mumbling along to this album. I don't know any of the words & I certainly have no idea which track they belong to or in which order, but does it really matter? There's even guitar solo's for some severe #BaseFace 3/5
Just a whole lot of meh here. Didn't love or hate any of the tracks. Liked Light my fire (fave track), but not in love with any of them. Mildly forgettable album for me, I don't know what it is. Just made me wish I were listening to the Kinks or the Beatles.
Decent classics, has some lengths
Scores on the Doors: 3⭐️
song 1 - turned a bit shit after 20 seconds; not my style, not promising at all 2/10 sould kitchen - trippy, had good start and was pretty good through out 7/10 the crystal ships - pretty nice, chill sound 8.5/10 20th century fox - meh, not the best 4/10 alabama song (whiskey bar) - like its playful sing songyness probably my fav song here 8.5/10 light my fire --pretty nice to be honest would casually listen 6.5/10 just realised it is 7mins long, turns good at like 3:30 7/10 back door man --rowdy song, would listen when I'm drinking straight vodka from the bottle walking in the middle of the street, feeling lonely and angry 6.5/10 i looked at you - pretty nice. starting to feel the repetitiveness 6/10 end of the night - truly a song to be listened to in the middle of the night in my kitchen bright lit with flourescent yellow lights. drunk. not knowing what to feel. love how its so slow. like my brain at these times 8/10 take it as it comes - a banger to dance to, got me dancing right now 8.5/10 the end - eleven fucking minutes ?? ok- pretty bland. would not listen again 3/10 overall: 6.5/10 an ok album with a few nice songs. would not listen to the whole thing again but the few songs i like would deffo feature in many of my playlists.
Sin dejar de tener cosas interesantes, está un poco sobrevalorado.
This is a solid album but I found myself annoyed at some of the sounds.
God, I totally don't know what to do with the Doors... Morrison is a total pretentious prat and not nearly as deep as he pretends, the band are a glorified lounge act... and yet, and yet, THIS record is surprisingly listenable. Most songs are 3 minutes or under, not enough time to outstay their welcome, and the tunes are catchy, the band can swing a little bit and their dynamic interplay is not too bad. The lyrics are not TOO dumb (for the most part). Light my fire and The End have a tendency to drag on a bit. I really want to hate the doors, but this album is kinda fun. I can forgive the band for this record. (Footnote: Alfie did point out that the opening of Soul Kitchen sounds a lot like Walking on the Sun by Smashmouth. Just sayin')
Liked the sound, but wasn't a huge fan of the lyrical styling
Enjoyed listened to it properly for the first time and the journey of the highs and lows (some a bit too depressing!) of the album as a whole. Good melodies. Didn't like the plinky plonky electric keyboard. Great guitar solos.
Great start and strong finish with The End, the middle was all over the place for me.
First time listening through all of a Doors album and it was a decent listening. I really liked the instrumental breaks and the loose feel of the longer songs and Break on through was a great song but was tempted to skip some of the album.
Solid classic rock album both contemplative and riff-filled. Some dynamic contrast could have livened things up a bit but good compositions nonetheless
OK
Some great songs. Some not so great haha
That Byrds album came out the same year and this is massively more interesting. However, I could probably take or leave a fair number of the tracks. The End is an iconic and great track - Is it enough for me to buy the album? I think so but I probably wouldn't splash out too much
Classic rock.
More style than substance on the Doors debut here. Some good tracks and great singles but a bit meandering for my tastes.
3/11 songs added Favourite songs: Break on through Alabama song End of the night
I get The Doors were a big deal. I get they influenced a whole lot of people in their day and since. But I don't know if I can ever be so under the influence of either drugs or alcohol to make their music not be boring as hell. The organ is too fucking loud on every song. I'll round up the score to the next star for the Oedipus Complex part in the final song.
Rockin album, I think I'd appreciate it more if I heard it for the first time in 1967, the grooves and overall energy is very infections and would be killer to see in concert, but lyrics are repetitive in some spots and overall not that enthused, favs - Break on Through (To the Other Side), Light My Fire
Reminds me a bit of Blank Generation. Does punk have roots here? Feels like safe psychedelic. Not very remarkable on my end, but still an enjoyable listen.
Couple of good ones on here
Good, but not great. Certainly as a first album, its a statement, but I'm prefer their later sound, specifically on LA Woman
Opening so soon after another of their creations this doesn't pack the punch it once may have.
3/5
The Doors debut album is widely regarded as the best debut album. The album sound is mostly rock, but mixed in it is jazz, blues, pop, classical, and r&b. 'Light My Fire' may be the most popular song on the album, and the band even remixed it for a radio edit because it was so highly requested. In conclusion, this album is a classic piece of rock history and might be the best debut album from any group of musicians.
One of the stand out examples of the time. Free ranging experimentation.
Cool but not my style, gave it a chance though...
Pretty much what I expected. Solid. Unique. And not my thing.
Some absolute classics there
Favourite Song: Light My Fire
Obviously synonymous with Apocalypse Now due to 'the end' but the whole album shares that same sound of annilhation thanks to Morrison's wild vocals and the whirling arrangements of various electric instruments.
Classic, aber nicht ganz meins.
Great sound….
I like the hits on here, and this is probably my favorite Doors album, but I'm not the biggest fan. This is the 3rd Doors album on this list and I kinda hope it's the last.
Little Mark with a C with his flowing hair.
un poco coñazo segun van pasando los temas
It’s alright
Not a bad album honestly. Not my style of music, but not bad music if that makes sense. Really nice drumming on most of the songs. Hopefully will listen again.
Para calificar un álbum siempre imagino con cuantas canciones la gente se prendería en un concierto sin ayuda de drogas fuertes... este disco tiene menos de la mitad. Bueno para tenerlo de fondo, aunque repetitivo.
Don't have the stomach for Jim anymore I must be getting old. This band is so good I see that but his whole...cloud or vibe or whatever...ugh
1967, Rock, starke 3
Un clásico pero nunca me ha enganchado
Honestly I was expected more from this album, still a good listen it just suffered from high expectations for me.
Nice
3* good start gets boring
I know this is seemingly blasphemous to some people, but I never got into The Doors. That Being said, this album is great for what it has done for the course of music, and its many genres. I want to give it a 4, but its my personal rating, so suck it!
Extraña la combinación de canciones tan pequeñas (2:15, 2:26) con otras tan largas (7:10, 11:43) Tracks: Break on Through, Take it as it comes y ps sí, Light my fire Avoid: Alabahama (whiskey song), The end.
Never listened to the full album, couple of classics here. Discovered them when the biographical film was released in 1991 (I was 15 years old at this time). Top track: Light My Fire
Classic tracks but overall not my cup of tea
I'm getting worried that this list is going to disproportionately consist of boomer rock. This album was solid.
Way more psychedelic Vietnam war apocalypse now vibes compared to LA Woman. The End and Light My Fire are obvious classics but Alabama Song is straight up creepy
not a fan
Meh.
Started off GREAT, ended a little too weird for me.
I really like this album, the “breakthrough” and “the end” are amazing. The Doors are a little overhyped, but a good band nonetheless.
Meh. It’s okay. The first half was alright, really lost steam after Light my Fire which was just so long and boring. The End was boring and too long. Just kinda a boring album overall.
oh, the Doors... Jim Morrison seems like a lot of girl's crushes because they can just romanticize the party boy lifestyle, when it reality this guy would be no one's friend. The music is pretty good; sloppy bluesy keyboard-heavy grooves with Morrison warbling over the top.
The kind of door I want to open!
Pretty good
Quite liked the psychadelic vibe but probably wouldn't revisit it...
Pretty good!
Only aware of the hits before listening to this. JMs voice is pretty terrible but the drumming is pretty good. That organ is something else - and not in a good way. Lyrically very immature, that kind of pretension a 6 former who has discovered poetry and the fact there’s more chance of getting laid if you’re in a band has. Kinda all sound a bit like Smash Mouths Walking on the Sun which I would rather listen to tbh.
The Doors could undoubtedly write a hook, and I like that 'Light my Fire' is a catchy pop song but also a 7 minute psych odyssey - this is really the best version of this band for me, I don’t care for pretty much everything else on here (and I think I just like this cos it’s funny). Also, I wish Manzarek would drop the Vox Continental, or at least limit it to one or two songs, or maybe do something a little different than that sort of sloppy chromatic chord change thing that's on EVERY TRACK. Actually, I guess Alabama Song is a bit different, and it's dreadful, so maybe not. 'The End' is without doubt my favourite song on this album, even though 'Light my Fire' is the best - it's brilliant because it's so bad and it makes me think of Homer's psychedelic pepper trip in The Simpson's and, of course, Apocalypse Now. Ride the snake, the snake is long, 7 miles long etc. etc. never ever ever fails to make me laugh and drifts through my head more often than it should. Also the 'father i want to kill you' bit - excellent in its own awful way. Jim Morrison was a hack!
