Reviews (page 9 of 14)
Great album, very unique and varied sound.
from my youth
I listened to LA Woman first, which is a good album, but this was so much stronger of an offering. I hadn't heard the extended version of Light My Fire which has a wonderful jam with Ray's organ soloing, then Robbie's guitar soloing. Break On Through (To the Other Side) really does set the stage for the album. The blues influence is definitely there but more of the psychedelic comes through. It's a consistently good album throughout - first half is pretty solid (20th Century Fox, while somewhat clever, is probably the weakest track on the album), but even though I Looked At You had the shortest run time, it was my favorite track. I'm more likely to regularly play this album.
Listened at Carkeek Park
I really enjoyed break in through to the other side. It’s a song I had heard before in movies and tv shows but didn’t know what band it came from. I love soul kitchen (Mono) and The Crystal Ship (Mono). I also don’t mind Twentieth Century Fox. Lastly, the song The End is a lengthy song that journeyed through a wide range of music styles and emotions.
This album is vibey and moody. A bit slower and you can tell the doors are still finding their way. I liked it though
This is an album I didn’t think I knew but must have been played at home a lot when I was younger, because it was definitely very familiar. Alabama Song wasn’t as familiar and I particularly liked it. I give the first half of the album (through Light My Fire) a 5 and the second half a 3 because it was so boring to me.
I like it best at its most banal poppy and it’s most self-indulgently obscure - Light My Fire and The End. I didn’t enjoy the Alabama detour, or Twentieth Century Fox.
Shorter album but some great songs
Knew every song, impressive album.
Iconic!
Groovy, psychedelic rock. Easy listening
Starkes Debutalbum.
Great.
Thanks for being less than two hours (boo to you George Harrison) Less rock than I thought, did enjoy it but would like to pay more attention next time WRL
Obviously a classic, but I'm not a huge 70s fan. Such an interesting listen / relisten, to think of what this must have sounded like when it was originally released.
I'm from 1995 growing up on a hodgepodge melting pot of Eminem, AcDc, Sinatra, D. Martin, Jumper Bruno, Bruno Mars, Tash Sultana, Beastie Boys, etc. The album felt slower at times compared to the music I'm used to, the lyrics are more compressed but more composed because of it. Some of songs drag the lyrics out to set the stage for an instrumental, but it makes the compression of the lyrics harder, because to me, there's more time in the rhythm to put more feelings and words together for the audience. The Doors themselves do very well. They're rascals who touch on any topic of emotions they can, from being in a backdoor affair to mourning their mothers, while stepping forward and jiving with life. I just think the time they were in created standards that limited them, and they'd do very well for the 80s instead of the 60s
Classic and influential album on the psychedelic L.A scene. Strikingly simple yet effective use of keyboard to create an album with its own dark sound that was rarely matched in the psychedelic era of the 60s and 70s. Amazing songwriting as well closed off with one of the most dystopia song I’ve listened to with “The End”. 4.5/5
A bit meandering, wild howls of a man in pain/ ecstasy. 4 stars
Classic Doors songs, reminded me of why I listened to them decades ago.
It was a good one.
Pretty good
Surprised by how many songs I already knew
Great album, a lot of the songs just rock
A really good debut album.
Je pense que c'est l'album de The Doors que j'ai le plus aimé jusqu'à date. J'aime son côté plus cru que les deux autres albums. Ça reste que ce n'est pas mon band préféré dans le old school rock. 7.5/10
Timeless awesomeness
Enjoyable flew by while working but good
Classic. So many great songs. And so unique. No one has ever really sounded like the Doors.
A longtime favorite of mine.
Very much 60s psychedelic rock. Classic album.
A solid album from start to finish. I've always loved their sound.
Great album with many familiar songs.
Love the doors! Great album start to finish.
Great album
4.5, very good, appreciated them more than I had before.
very good but not a 5 to me, like a 4.25
I liked it a lot.
if i had the opportunity to steal a man’s voice…..
Love this album. I swear, I'll just randomly get Alabama song stuck in my head. I don't know what that says about me.
Not much to say. It's a classic album. Great stuff.
Very distinctive sound
Interesting album! I love the vibe and the vocals, definitely will listen again.
DOORS music is easily recognizable via Ray Manzerak's keyboards.
- Has an iconic sound that you know is The Doors - Light My Fire is peak - Vocals are very alluring - A little soft for my tastes but I respect the musicianship
👍
Awesome singles but not as complete as LA Woman
Haven’t listened to this album in probably 15 years and it still holds up for the most part. There’s a couple of great songs (break on through, light my fire) and a couple of mediocre ones (whiskey bar is a bit creepier than I remember). Solid album, very influential in its time. I’ve always wondered how I would like The End differently if I could listen to it without picturing Martin sheen wrecking his hotel room in Saigon. But I guess I’ll never know.
Excited to listen to an entire Doors album for the first time. Break on Through and Light my Fire are instantly recognisable and truth be told I never actually knew they were done by the Doors. Alabama Song and End of the Night were my low points in this album, I wasn’t much a fan. The latter started off well because I liked the moody, mysterious instrumentation that was going on but the lyrics were a bit boring. Capped off by an acid trip that was The End that I enjoyed mostly apart from some random almost spoken parts, I have to say I overall enjoyed listening to this.
Easily my favourite project by The Doors. Break on Through is an incredible opener and Whiskey Song, Light My Fire and The End are all great
3.9/5 Best track: The End
Reminds me of Paris 2022 :')
"Grahh! The Doors' debut is not a 5/5 record!", I say as an electric bolt pierces my chest with the power of a trillion suns. A formidable warlock stands above my feeble, crumbled body, casting aside his hood with an air of ominous grandeur. It's Jim Morrison. He utters: "You have truly met your "The End (11:43)", dumb fuck", and proceeds to light me on fire, in yet another cool The Doors reference. I nod and say "hey, that was pretty clever, maybe The Doors' debut is a 5/5 record after all". 4/5.
Couldn't break on through to the 5-star side
Weer erg leuk album, deed me wel veel denken aan het vorige album. Is ook twee jaar later verschenen dus niet heel raar. “Light my fire” is toch wel echt m’n favoriet!! Geef dit album ook een 3,5!! Of toch een 4?? Ik vind het maar lastig dit stemsysteem. 3,8 sterren dan maar!!
Of course icons of the late 60s/early 70s The Doors have had a lot of influence on California rock and the rock culture in general. Not every song on the album is a hit, but the themes are consistent throughout.
Several well-known songs. Mix of psychedelia and stream-of-conscience with almost folksy rhythms.
Pretty elite album. Opening up with break on through sucks you in right away. only gets a 4 because there’s two songs that aren’t that good that bring the rating down. First 7 songs are so strong tho
pretty swaggy. lots of bangers here. i guess “the crystal ship” is where they got it from on breaking bad?
I loved this album when I was in college. Haven’t listened a lot recently but I enjoyed it.
There’s some wildness there
Leads with interest and ends in a bang. The End is one great long ass song, shoutout Apocalypse Now. Light My Fire is a highlight of the album as well.
Banger
Twentieth century fox >>>>
I liked break on through, light my fire, back door man, and take it as it comes
Brani Preferiti: - "Twentieth Century Fox" - "Light My Fire" - "The End" Note: Si deve ammettere che 'The Doors' è tra i migliori album di debutto mai creati. Morrison.
Three Doors albums already and I'm only up to #129! My favourite was Morrison Hotel. I'm a bit out-Doorsed at the moment TBH but this has Back Door Man and Break On Through so...
Eh, its The Doors....
It's had to imagine when think of The Doors, all the songs that come to mind are on this debut album (there are probably some songs I'm forgetting about from their other albums). Jim Morrison was such a poetical song writer, if you want to see good song writing, look at his lyrics. Also, I don't think there is enough organ playing in rock music nowadays. Standouts: Break On Through (To the Other Side), Light My Fire, The End
Just short of 5 stars. Not sure what else it could do. 4.75 Excellent.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Break on through, Soul kitchen, Alabama song, Light my fire,
maybe my mum does have good music taste after all
MUCH better than the Morrison Hotel album we listened to. Love the keyboard/synth compliments to the rest of the music. Album faded off toward the end, and the 12-min finish was awful, but, overall, a very fun and engaging listen. Fav tracks: Soul Kitchen, Light My Fire, Back Door Man
Kúl plata. Alltaf gaman að grípa í hana.
I enjoyed this! Very groovy, and Jim Morrison has a very distinctive voice. Especially loved the liberal use of funky keyboard. Favorite songs were Break on Through, Soul Kitchen, Back Door Man, and Take It as It Comes
I knew and own this album. Apart from the most famous songs like Break on Through, Light my Fire and The End... I'd recommend The Crystal Ship, hidden gem! Special mention to Alabama Song, english version of Bertold Brecht/Elizabeth Hauptmann/Kurt Weil song from the german play Little Mahagonny.
It's swirly on a very good way. The organ playing is fantastic, and Jim Morrison's baritone is a thing of beauty, even of his sixth form poetry mysticism bollocks is a touch embarrassing. It has at least three or four all time classics on there (even of the soloing on Light My Fire drags on a bit). So a brilliant, if not a classic album.
Love the Doors and this album is a classic for a reason. But there are definitely some tracks that didn't land for me on this.
Next time I hear this album I want to be camping in the middle of a dry dessert under the stars and smoking with friends. I really liked this albums jam session vibes. Especially in the song ‘Light My Fire’ since the songs felt more complete and rounded off. I also enjoyed the flare that the electronic organ gave throughout the first half of the album.
It’s the Doors what else is there to say. The keyboard reminds me of The one that’s at my grandmas house sounds exactly the same. Very good psychedelic kind of music.
Initial Thoughts: Ooo! What I love about this site is that it's giving me the opportunity to listen to albums all the way through, whereas I would only listen to the iconic songs. Let's listen to some American rock! \m/ Final Thoughts: Suuuuper old school rock. Obviously. I really liked this album, each track was unique which I really liked. A bit on the slower side, but I feel like that's just how it is with this era of rock. Solid album!
Jim Morrison definitely died before his time but at least we got his best yesrs and album. Could you imagine the doors in 2023 playing their hits to a crowd of old folks. Instead we have the lore of Jim Morrison and the doors. This is a great album. Plenty of hits and the brooding sound that Morrison provides is cool and different than a lot of bands at that time. This is an album worth listening. 8.3/10
Nice.
Fedt album men ikke noget jeg ville høre alene men The end var god
So I can't exactly recall listening to this whole album at any point in time, but every single song sounded familiar. Huh. Anyway, I really enjoyed this one. And to learn that it's their DEBUT album? Wow. Way to hit the music scene absolutely swinging.
Ok so I really like their look hahaha They’re cool they’re fun I would dance to them… Alabama song (whisky bar) is kind of a crazy song.
I kinda liked it. Not my usual style but cohesive
I had this album as a teenager and played it a lot. But I guess I haven’t really listened to it much since then. Only the odd song. A classic example of a band with a distinctive sound and yet they still make every song sound different, which is a mark of quality for me. I think I might have given them five stars back when I was younger, but I wasn’t as fully entranced today. The End , however, is a phenomenal song and reminded me of Nico’s excellent cover of it. Blinding. Stuff.
Not sure if I've ever listened to this whole album before. Side one is excellent. Side two not so much. The End is cool and also ridiculous. Jim gets to be a little much on that one. As far as the band goes, they're amazing. Each one of them is innovative and distinctive. RK's guitar solos never disappoint—his bends always make me feel drunk, and his flamenco-inspired style is iconic. And I've always felt that John Densmore never gets enough love for his great drumming. He really makes The End work thanks to all his fills and his dynamics. What a great sound they had, though their later albums would be better produced. As for Jim... I'm attracted and repulsed. He's a great frontman. He's also a lot. Some of his lyrics are amazing—not so much for their poetic value but more like memes that get stuck in your head for good. But yeah, his poetry can be pretty eye-roll-inducing. Whatever. I'd be thrilled if he were my lead singer.
I like the doors, had a few songs on it I didn't know which was nice.
Always enjoy The Doors
1. Break on through (to the other side) 2. The End 3. 20th Century Fox
Really strong but saving 5 stars
Classic album but not music i would misten to everyday. But I enjoyed this listen a lot.
Great
I love the instrumental richness, the organ specially is just perfect
really good album and I love Jim Morrison but Incredible Bongo Band is better
An actually great classic
Uskomatonta miten tää levy on todella aikansa tuote, mutta myös jotenkin ajaton. The End vie syvälle viidakkoon.
I've listened to this one before. IT's such a strong debut album from a band that everyone should've listened to. I'm giving this a 4/5 as I think there are better albums in the classic rock genre. I've actually given lesser albums compared to this one a 5 but that's within their own genre.
Sometimes it only takes 8 days. Recording something like this in just over a week is nothing short of mind blowing. Because Jim and his band mates probably set the precedent for psychedelic music for the next 30 years with this album. Before I get into the positives, I want to get my one gripe out of the way. Something about the way these albums were mixed back in the 60's seems off. The hard panning of all the instruments in certain channels makes the listening experience weird. I understand it was due to the technical limitations they had back then, and I'm not blaming anyone who worked on the record, because they couldn't control what they had back then. It just throws me off a bit. Now into the things I love. The obvious driving force of the record is Jim Morrison. Some would find it hard to believe that I didn't know what his voice sounded like until now. But truthfully this wasn't what I expected. His vocals carry way more power than I imagined they would. But I love it. He has a bit of gravel to his voice, and it actually makes it more pleasant to listen to. The lyrics on this are sensual, but also dark and surreal, and just looking for a spot deep in your soul to settle down and entrance you. "Break on Through" is one of the strongest opening tracks of any album I've heard from the 60's so far. It's short and to the point, but sets up the vibe for the rest of the album. The piano on "The Crystal Ship" is so hauntingly gorgeous. It reminds me of the small bit of piano on the opener of Pink Moon. It kind of comes out of nowhere, but fits perfectly. "Light My Fire", without any exaggeration, might be one of the greatest psychedelic rock songs period. They were fucking jamming on this one man. Ray Manzarek was an absolute monster on the keyboard, and he really shows his abilities on this song. Honestly, he holds most of the songs on this record together with his parts. And the guitar solo after his keyboard part is also fantastic. This song is honestly just 7 minutes of pure bliss. "Back Door Man" is also another solid jam. The next three songs after that aren't anything particularly notable. And "The End" is an intriguing song. Because it is by far the longest song on the record, and it feels more on the experimental side of psych rock. The last 3 minutes or so are really great, and I think it works as a good way to end the whole thing off. It is such a shame Jim died only 4 years after this came out, because as a debut record, this is fantastic, and The Doors truly were in a league of their own at the time. There are more records from them other than this that I would love to delve into, but I just wish this band would have been able to continue advancing their sound further into the 20th century and beyond.
Great
Great psychedelic blues. heavy on the organ. SO much great stuff going on with this album, just misses a little bit. "The End" kind of rambles too long. Really like "Back Door Man", great mix of Morrison's vocals and the guitar/organ combination. 4/5 Would listen again.
Light my Fire, Back Door man y The End buenisimas canciones, por eso las 4 estrellas. Las demas canciones un poco menos.
Most of the songs are great. Some aren't. Probably their most consistent album. Favorite song: Light My Fire.
The lead singer is a goofball but this album does jam
Apart from just a couple of songs that should have been left off, this album was pretty great.
Among the most unique flavours of rock, with its existential and dark organ-driven take on psychrock.
- Heard this album many times before but not listened for a good while - Clearly an iconic and groundbreaking album, if a slight bit overrated by some - Break on Through and Light My Fire are classics - Fav songs: Light My Fire, Break on Through (To the Other Side), The End
Good start to the week. Ray Manzareks organ playing on The End is hypnotic. Great band.
There was absolutely nothing that Jim Morrison said throughout this album or Morrison Hotel that would lead me to believe that he has good intentions with anyone’s daughter.
Ray Manzarek fuck me
Half brilliant, half filler. It seems most people go through a Doors phase until they realize Jim Morrison was just some blow-hard drunk who tried to pass himself off as some modern day Dionysus. But I'll forever ride hard for the 5 songs on this album that are stone-cold classics, especially "Light My Fire", primarily the single version, which skyrocketed to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Elektra Records wisely chose to edit out Ray Manzarek's long organ solo to pare the thing down to just under three minutes, and it works much better that way. Sometimes, the record labels know what they're doing.
I'm a 4/5 on this one. 4.5 if I could. It has more jams than duds, but is not quite perfect. Highlights: Break on Through, Light My Fire, Take It as It Comes, and The End. Low point: Alabama Song.
Love this album, I want to give it a 4.5. Definitely will listen to it again this week
Lotsa classics on this one. Didn't realize it was all from the 60s. Some cool psychedelic sounds going on in here. I felt like the later part of the album turned more into a story. The End was a cool song to end it. I'd probably listen to this one again.
So many hits on this one. Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar) is my favorite for the goofiness. The End is such a strange but good song there is so much going on in it. It sounds like no other song on this album which is a cool way to round it out.
Enjoyed this much more than I’d predicted! Hadn’t heard the whole album thru in forever…maybe never? Noticed guitar licks I hadn’t in college years.
Lizard-y. 4 stars.
This is pretty squarely a 3.5/5 for me. I have to round up or down here, but I think I could get away with a 3 or a 4 here, it's weird. I think I liked it more than thought it was okay though.
Loving the nostalgic vibes! My favorite track is The Crystal Ship. I can picture the 60s American life while listening to it.
No one told me The Doors covered Brecht
Some true classics on this album, but also some lesser songs
Guau
A classic, iconic album. It has a very distinct, signature sound, which is a huge accomplishment when you think about how many psychedelic rock albums were floating around in the late '60s. So many of them were painfully mediocre too, which makes this stand out even more. Everything about the record is interesting, but what I enjoyed the most were the keys. Jangly, whimsical, sort of like carnival music at times - pairing really well with the guitars and Jim Morrison's droning (but also powerful) voice. Standout tracks are Alabama Song, Soul Kitchen, and Twentieth Century Fox.
Nice memories, but it is the past
I loved this. Iconic psychadelic jams.
There have been a few albums by The Doors that I’ve reviewed now. With both Morrison Hotel and L.A. Woman, I’ve found myself being left somewhat underwhelmed. The Doors are of a legendary status, and certainly have had some good songs, but I’ve yet to really see the greatness. Let’s see if this album changes my mind! Songs I already knew: Break On Through (To The Other Side), Alabama Song (Whisky Bar), Light My Fire, The End Favourites: Light My Fire, The End I recognised more than I expected off this album. Strangely, I think it was because I hear some of these songs sang at home so often - I’m more familiar with very amateur versions (sorry Rach) than the originals. This album was markedly better than the others I’ve listened to so far. It’s interesting in the arrangements - you can see how Light My Fire was rearranged into jazz-pop for Will Young and how it worked so well as that. I love that very distinctive electric piano sound I’ve heard over a few of their albums. Overall, a very good album. I’m starting to see the fuss a bit now.
Really outstanding album, especially for the time
Classical album. Very good!
minchia Bello, ma pensavo da 5 stelle
mt bom
Very good, unique and lots of different moods
Top tracks were Break on Through and Twentieth Century Fox. This is like the most 60’s rock album I’ve ever heard, very catchy tracks, I love the vocals particularly when they get echoey and layered.
It’s familiar to me when listening this album. Even thought I had no idea that I listened it before.
I wonder how I would rate this if I hadn't been exposed to it in my youth
Nothing
This is not my first listen, but it is the first one where I actively realized that this is kind of a weird album. Many of the songs here have a strange, almost eerie feeling to them, which is a fun angle to approach psychedelia from. Having the keyboard be so central to a band's sound almost always earns points with me, too. Morrison is certainly an odd duck, but his howl can send shivers down your spine. A few of the tracks here are sort of half-baked or simply not that good, which prevents me from considering this a perfect, 5-star album. But the highlights are real good.
It's alright but the last song is too on the nose it ruins the vibe
I have to say it was definitely not as good as I'd expected. The organ and Jim Morrison's voice were nice throughout, but songwriting was a mixed bag. The first half, including the overrated Light My Fire, was just not exciting at all. The album picked up steam from Back Door Man on and ended pretty solid. Rounded up from 3.5
3 bangers and the rest is solid too, morrisons voice is just godly
Much better than I was expecting. Freaky circus music. Squelchy, distorted sounds. Incredible bass tones throughout.
Never listened to any Doors album all the way through, but I always enjoyed some of their songs. With that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Something about Morrison’s distinct and dark voice coupled with the off putting organs on these tracks really did something for me. I typically really dislike long tracks, but man I enjoyed every second of Light my Fire. Point taken away for cringe lyrics
try to set the night on FIREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Listened to the doors a lot growing up but fell off listening to them in recent years so this was a nice re-listen. It’s cool to see when bands hit the ground running with their first albums and immediately find their sound like with this debut. Manzarek’s keys lead the way on the best songs off of this one like Soul Kitchen, Break On Through, and Light My Fire. Jim Morrison’s vocals and lyrics are also unique and an interesting contrast to the light hippy music of the 60’s. The vocals can go from a deep, jazzy tone to erratic and loose rock singing that elevates a number of songs. I think the lyrics are best on songs like Break On Through where they aren’t the focus of the song but add a darkness to it that matches the jazz/blues rock instrumentals. On The End the lyrics lose that sleekness and come up really flat in their aim to be groundbreaking. Other slight complaint with this album is the covers don’t really seem to add much and even though Alabama song is kinda funny idk why you’d put it in this one. 👍: light my fire, break in through, soul kitchen
Classic
Great debut from a great band.
I love this album are ya kiddin
Liked it, banging
Classic.
Enjoyable. Band better than the singer.
Genres: Psychedelic rock, hard rock, art rock, psychedelia Formed: Los Angeles in 1965 Run time: 11 songs, 44 min, 11 sec As far as first albums go, it’s unique. It must have been quite shocking at the time. Obvious drug references, profanities, references to incest and murder; it’s got it all. How did they get published? “Break on Through (To the Other Side)” and “Light My Fire” both have over 250M plays on Spotify which makes it very popular. They are probably more popular today (over 40 years later) than in their hay day. The least played track has over 15M plays. I enjoyed most of the tracks and loved four of them. Yes, I will be playing this album again in the future. My Rating: ****
Some great timeless songs and others are easily forgotten but enjoyed non the less
The organ sound is excellent through out. Break On Through and Light my Fire still hold up. I guess if you can get past the Jim Morrison baggage and parodies the rest of the album works.
Great sound and an enjoyable listen
Great album! I can hear the influences of 60's blues all over the place, also a little bit of The Beatles? Loved "Soul Kitchen" specially.
Groovy, psykedelisk 60’er rock, rimelig nice
Relaxing and fätzy.
Some absolute classics, but also some songs that haven't stood the test of time.
Cracker of a debut. Soul Kitchen for stand out track.
This album came back in a big way when I was in high school because of the Oliver Stone Doors movie. If you ever listened to classic rock radio, you've heard all of these songs except for a couple of album tracks that lead up to The End. I like this album well enough, but because it seems so ubiquitous, I don't really need to go out of my way to listen to this going forward.
There are some legendary tracks here, and some I didn't know. I've always liked The Doors so this was an easy listen today.
A classic, of course
Songs like Break On Through, Soul Kitchen, and Light My Fire were some hot hits from middle school Joey days. I have never listened to this album in its entirety, however. I will honestly say some of these tracks are not super memorable to me. They don't hit as hard as, well, the hits. Alabama Song is so very very strange (learned about what a marxophone is through this listen). Ray Manzarek absolutely makes this album what it is in my mind but Jim's vocals are punk as hell and I LOVE when he lets it all out. I will be honest, I do think a few songs drag a little bit or just weren't very memorable. I think the only songs I could really feel "something" with aside from the hits were Back Door Man and I Looked At You. I enjoyed the first couple of minutes of The End but damn this song just goes and goes and goes. And not really in a way that draws me in. I kind of just want it to end. I would put this one at a 3.75 but will round up to 4 just considering the fact that this was their debut! They came in hot, for sure!
10/11 Very shocked that I liked it this much. There were a few 'weird' songs, but it goes with the time that they were made in. I liked the vibe, will definitely listen again.
The Doors are one of those bands that is iconic and also not that good. Even so, this album is basically their greatest hits. Just about every “good” Doors song is on this album - which makes it a no-brainer for the list. I’m giving it a bump based on that deserved mess, but -musically - it’s a 3 at best.
По-простому хороший и интересный альбом с небольшими нотками психодела, классика того времени, которую можно слушать бесконечно. (8)
yeah yeah yeah - classic
The praise for this one is understandable - The Doors definitely had something unique. For sure it's one of the most impressive debut albums, as their signature sound was already fully formed, and there are some truly classic tracks as well. When the organ riff in Light My Fire slots back in after all the soloing it's always a great moment, every time I hear it. I'd stop short of saying it's one of the best ever albums period, though.
Honestly, I love this album. So many of The Doors best songs are right here on this outstanding debut album, and they are culturally known and significant songs, at that. I am not a huge psychedelic rock fan, but I have always loved The Doors' take on it. Furthermore, they mix a lot of blues into their psychedelic rock, too, which is another thing I don't typically like, but I find it works well here. This is psychedelia at its best, and every song has its own weird quirkiness to it. In my opinion, when you hear a Doors song, you just know it is them -- they immediately made a significant mark on music that has lasted over the years.
4.5
Two brilliant tracks, 4*
I'm familiar with their bigger hits and listening to this album was quite a journey. I think they revolutionized music and they brought a very unique take to the world. It is a shame that Jim Morrison's flame burned out so quickly. There are so many what-ifs?
very good, a couple of absolute classics. pretty similar sounds throughout most songs. but still quite solid album.
Opens with break on through, also has light my fire, and closes with the end. This album basically is the 60's. The organ, Morrison's voice, everything about it is great
The first six songs flow seamlessly into each other and the guitar and organ instrumentation is amazing, the second half is also great but do not feel as cohesive as the first
I think Mr. Lizard King is finally clicking for me; still not a favorite of mine, but I definitely get it now. And this one has some classics and some nice deep cuts; and that organ is always killer.
Really great Album Some great songs
Very vibey.
Yo 4/5 this shit slaps the 60s knew how to bop no wonder James acaster loved them
It really is an excellent album and sums up the tone and theme of the 60s rock bands of LA in a perfect way. 4/5
Say what you will about Jim Morrison and the Doors, the man truly performs like a man possessed. Pretentious lyrics aside, he had "it", whatever that is. Also, the Doors had a sound that I don't think many bands have ever been able to truly match. The organ-heavy sound has been copied multiple times, but I don't think they ever come close to what the Doors were doing. Favorite tracks: "Soul Kitchen", "Break on Through", "The End"

Good album
Sheer brilliance, rock music of the type that never fades. File under “what a debut”. Who could have imagined a rock song with such a huge organ solo could light my fire so consistently? Or that The End could provide the such an effective soundtrack to one of the best films ever, Apocalypse Now? My second favourite Doors album, by the tiniest of margins (LA Woman, you’re my woman).
This is probably one of the stronger efforts by the Doors. Jim Morrison's poetry is not all over the place ("I am the Lizard King, I can do anything." "Um.... ok, Jim. Whatever...."), the band is fine form, the organ is really complimenting the guitar. I'm embarrassed to say, this is my first time hearing the uncut versions of both "The End" and "Break On Through". I had heard them on a Best Of , but they took out the word "high" in "Break On Through" so Morrison sings "She gets..." and that's all I ever heard. And they edited out Jim chanting "f**k" as well. So the song felt... slightly different this time. Even the non-single songs sounded better. They're not so... ramble-y. "Soul Kitchen" and "Twentieth Century Fox" I had heard before, and I always liked the wordplay of the latter's title. The other songs work well, and their brevity does help with that, they don't overstay their welcome. So all in all, a pretty solid effort.
Not my favorite band or album but it's solid. Their different sounds (blues, jazz, rock, psychedelia) come through well. Jim Morrison is appropriately unhinged. Honestly, I wasn't exactly blown away by any songs I didn't already know, but I found myself re-appreciating the songs I did know - Break on Through, Soul Kitchen, 20th Century Fox, Light My Fire, and The End (ok, the full version is a little much).
Some fabulous songs on here! A few not as good ones keep it from being a 5.
It is a classic. I was surprised how many of the songs I recognized...not just the big two singles. Twentieth Century Fox was a fun find.
Double doors. Marginally better than L.A. Woman.
Didn't think it was good as their L.A Woman album but I still really liked this. "Break On Through", "The End" and "Light My Fire" were highlights of the album.
Double Doors! As of 2 days ago I already knew I was cool enough to listen to the Doors, so no issues there. I liked this too. Quite different to LA woman. This sounded more Beatlesy, or rather the Beatles sound Doorsy? I preferred the more blues sounding LA woman album. However this had many more "hits" that I knew and I can imagine it was a bigger commercial success. I should've given LA woman a 5, and this a 4, but alas.
4.5
One of their best
Likte dette overraskende godt ✨ bra jobbemusikk
Great album
I liked it, I thought it was somewhat basic and not breaking the bounds but it was very good with what it was trying to be.
I never know what to do with The Doors, I'll be honest. So many of my friends and other people I respect their musical tastes off see this as a landmark in musical history, even calling it the best debut album ever made. But I must be really missing something that everyone else is hearing, because this never clicked with me. I know this album well, I enjoy listening to it, and it has some great moments on it (The organ solo in Light My Fire, and The End of course.) But songs like 'Twentieth Century Fox' or 'Take It As It Comes' are just decent rock songs and I'll always nod my head up and down when I hear them in a pub or a party, but nothing more. It's a 3,5* album and maybe some time in my life it'll click.
Very solid album with some great hits. The deep cuts here are pretty meh but don't drag the good songs down. The End takes this album up a notch.
The boreds Not!!
The great tracks are fantastic, the others are good too. Definitely an album you have to hear b4 you die
Great record
Some of their biggest songs are here and Jim absolutely kills it! The band’s sound is so unique and identifiable.
Good stuff. The organ breaks are all a bit samey, but The End is a great track.
There’s a couple of missteps but by and large this is still an outstanding, evocative, almost dangerous sounding debut record, especially songs like ‘Break On Through (To The Other Side)’, ‘Light My Fire’ and of course epic psychedelic freak out ‘The End’, which is forever seared in my brain through its use in ‘Apocalypse Now’. ‘This is the end, beautiful friend’ indeed.
great album - the mother of angst
A nice album where you can obviously see the weirder and innovative roots you would see in later Doors' albums, but the organ solo stuff, while good, does feel a little too safe and extended at times. Still though, overall very good, and still earns a four star.
Deras bästa album.
Absolute classic
great listen from start to finish
4/5. First half is perfect but second half has a lot of filler songs. The End is great but doesn’t make up for the three songs before it that don’t land.
Great album with a few major hits, "Light my Fire", "Break on Through", "Soul Kitchen". Love Ray Mazarek's synthesizer. 8/10.
Superb debut album. Starts (Break on through) and finishes (The End) so strongly while also boasting the magnificent Light My Fire. What stands out for me is the way that Ray Manzarek's keyboards drive the songs and of course the deep, distinctive quality of Jim Morrison's singing.
Okay hold on, hold on. This album is fine right, it’s enjoyable. I enjoyed most of the frilly little organ solos and Jim Morrisons scraggy voice but ‘The End’ is something else. That’s a fucking great song. 8/10
Very cool record. The songs feel really well structured and performed, but for me the organ really separates everything on this album from the typical ‘60s sound. 8/10
Really loving the sound so far. Don't really care for Alabama Song, also has some questionable lyrics. "Show me to the next little girl, don't ask why" ???? Final thoughts: Loved most of this album, I wanted to give it 5 stars but that one song kinda ruined it. I would give it 4.5 if I could.
highlights: - break on through - soul kitchen - alabama song (lmao) i enjoyed it more that i should've
Great album that I just can't ever get into.
Chill vibe
This album still sounds cool more than a half-century after its release. Like a west coast Velvet Underground.
Far out man
I have no nostalgia for this album but I can still appreciate how impactful this one is.
Altijd goed, de deuren.
One of the best doors albums, I would say the definitive doors album. If you’re even a little interested in the doors this is where to start!
A true classic!
4.75
Listened to on 7/18/22 4.2/5 Favorite song: Break on Through, Twentieth Century Fox Shockingly phenomenal debut album - the Doors are clearly so talented and I was bopping
Solid album with strong start. Favorite songs were Break on Through and Soul Kitchen.
For a debut album, it’s shocking how many songs became hits or at least recognizable. Nothing is groundbreaking (by today’s standards at least), but for an album released during the heyday of both the Beatles and The Rolling Stones, it shows the Doors can hold their own, even though it falls apart a little toward the end of the album for me. Fav Track: Break On Through (To The Other Side) 4/5
Pretty Good. Classics I regonize.
Interesting sound. Pretty prog
Manzareks keys are genius
Not a huge fan of the doors and the singer but this was a really good album
4.5/5 that was a nice album!
7/10. Enjoyable in a moody way, but the last song was a bit much.
The best songs are quite good, the rest are decent. 8/10
Best Song: Break on Through (To the Other Side). Such an immense kickoff to the album. Showcases Morrison's unique vocal qualities, with the keyboard accompaniment that really signifies The Doors. Worst Song: The Crystal Ship. I don't want to hear Jim Morrison croon and romance. I want the Lizard King. I want noise and passion and bravado. Overall: It's good. Weird and good. It still feels like they haven't totally nailed down their aesthetic here, and there are a few too many forgettable filler tracks, but that is easily overcome by the long, meandering, drug-fueled tracks like "Light My Fire" and "The End". Morrison's simple poetry and the unique blend of backing instrumentals just work well together. Ambitious but accessible.
Many memories
Ai jai. Tää on täysin faijarokkia (mun tapauksessa hyvin kirjaimellisesti), mutta onhan tässä melkeen kaikki hyviä biisejä.
Har alltid blanda the Doors og the Who av ein eller anna grunn, men trur kanskje the Doors er bedre. (Hadde berre høyrt sånn 3 Doors songar, og har vel fortsatt ikkje hørt meir enn 3 the Who songar, så me får sjå kossen da utvikle seg) Bra album i alle fall, har nesten lyst å gi 5 stjerne men da blir litt vel ivrig på første album kanskje
Arch lizard king thinks he's a poet when really he's just a bit of a nob; however even that prancing tit can't undermine the strength of most of the tunes. Best Tracks: Break on Through (To The Other Side); Soul Kitchen; Light My Fire
Absolute banger right up until the drugged out, 12 minute final track. Minus one. Definitely sounds of its time.
Man I had to scroll down quite a bit further than I expected to find a negative review of this. I wouldn't say I hate The Doors but do kind of think they're for high school boys who think they're more sophisticated than they really are. Man, that's a super pretentious thing to say isn't it? Even if it is, it for sure was a pretty good description of high school me. I definitely owned the double album greatest hits collection, it was one of my earliest Columbia House purchases and I definitely bought into the myth that Jim Morrison was like a real poet, dude. Listening to this now I think I'm liking it more than I would have believed. Maybe it's the fact that I don't really listen to classic rock radio anymore, so it's not as omnipresent in my life as it was back in the day. I'm not gonna say this is dated because that's a stupid criticism, what does it even mean? Morrison is a pretty good songwriter and maybe there's a cult of personality surrounding him (maybe? Lol) but he actually is an amazing front man and really no one else sounds like The Doors musically, certainly not in 1967 anyway. They'll never be my favorites again, that Crystal Ship has sailed (sorry. Also that song will always make me think of The Dead Milkmen, iykyk) but this might be their best album. 4 stars.
My vinyl of this is weed green which fees appropriate
Doory
9/10
Like being on a ride to a Californian beach in a van driven by the Manson Family.
I've never been big on The Doors for some reason, but these are undeniably innovative songs with evocative lyrics and swirls of psychedelia that must have sounded even better live.
Flawless. Timeless. The End.
It drops off pretty quickly after this, but I like this album.
It was pretty pog I think. Definitely would have gone pretty hard if I was alive in the 60s. :D
light my fire went absolutely bonkers
One of my favorite albums by one of the better bands.
Cool
Break On Through To The Other Side. Jammed out to that one on the piano in Rock Band 3 Everything else, goes on for way too long. Not that I didn’t enjoy it.
Do you think every song needs an electric organ? Are you also painstakingly horny? Then boy do I have an album for you
This is solid throughout but it has some of the most timeless tracks of all time in Break on Through, Soul Kitchen and Light My Fire, somehow nearly 60 years old? Deserves a 4.
This is fab, really like this. Almost falls out of the 4 category because it does get a bit self indulgent - to a lesser extent at the end of Light My Fire, and definitely on This Is The End. It's amazing that this album is 55 years old, there are bits of it that sound so fresh, and it keeps up the quality pretty well throughout. Some really nice changes of pace, too.
it's aight
Some amazing stuff on here, certainly lit my fire
Morrison's vocals made them such a standout for the era. Love his rough edges on their psychedelic sound. So much organ too
A great debut showing their intent and what they would become.
By far my favorite Doors with by far my favourite Doors song; The End. 4.5 🌟
Good start. Some other good spots. Would be a 5 if it had riders on the storm
7/10
This is the end. My beautiful friend, the end.
“The Doors” irrumpe en la escena con aura divina y generosa obsequiándonos con manjares como “End of the night”, “Break on through (to the other side)” o “The end”. Los mendrugos de pan para rebañar la salsa son “Soul kitchen”, “Back door man” y “Light my fire”. Un álbum para chuparse los dedos y querer repetir.
The Doors achieve some of their most notable and impactful tracks in this album, and truly set their trajectory as a group. Morrison's gristle and erratic temperament is measured in this album as he sings with a polish and focus.
Great music Lyrics are kind of mediocre when you actually listen to them
Ja voor ik m hoor, dit is gwn n klassieker
Very compelling
A classic for a reason! Jim Morrison's voice is so haunting and sultry and the music is just so good
I really enjoyed it, probably another gummy album, but it works. So many songs on here I have heard before.
Excellent debut album by one of the most unique rock bands of all time. The Doors' sound is decade-defining, and it is amazing to see how fleshed out they were in their first studio release. I really enjoy Jim Morrison's low and haunting vocals, and the emphasis on the electric organ really makes this music stand out from other acts at the time. Instead of emulating the Beatles or The Who like a lot of other bands were doing back in the mid-late 60's, they went in their own direction which makes me respect them a lot. There are obviously some very popular songs on this record (Break on Through (To The Other Side), Light My Fire, and The End), but I would say there was not a weak song on this entire album. I listened to it in both stereo and mono, and upon these two listens, the track that stood out the most to me that I hadn't already heard was I Looked at You (added it to my Starred list). While I enjoyed this one quite a bit, I will say that some of the songs do blend together since they all feature the same instruments. I still think this album is great despite this, and I would recommend any fan of rock give this one a listen. 4/5.
Great album overall. Some tracks I wouldn't have missed, some are a bit long.
Solid album, never listened to the full thing before. can easily see how it's a classic
The Doors have been one of those bands that I skip on playlists, but I think it's just because their biggest songs are so overplayed. I'm enjoying this listen way more than expected based on my history with The Doors. It's quite remarkable that this is a debut album. It's excellent.
Geggjuð plata
A classic
Yes, yes yes! Break on Through muthafakkas! The Doors, consisting of the wailing, moaning and screeching of Morrison, the synthesized sounds of Manzarek’s keyboard, the thumping of Densmore on drums rounded out by Krieger’s guitar, took us on am emotional and psychedelic rock and roll rollercoaster that will never be matched. They broke into the scene with their first album The Doors. Maybe not their best but a well-rounded classic first album non the less. Break on Through and Soul Kitchen are funky, straight forward rock songs that can’t be denied. The Crystal Ship provides the first glimpse into Morrison’s often times fragile state. Right back to the rock and roll with Twentieth Century Fox, shifting back to their unique quirkiness with Alabama Song (and must have whisky, oh, you know why!). Their performance of Light My Fire on the Ed Sullivan show will live on in infamy (and is sooo tame by today’s standards, but at that time, Jim was breaking through). Back Door Man is one of my all time favorite songs, not just of the Doors. Despite there being so few lyrics. Don’t know why but just LOVE the line ‘I eat more chicken any man ever seen’. I Looked at You is probably the weakest song on the album for me. End of the Night is the first song that takes us on that psychedelic ride. Some sound advice in Take It as It Comes. And of course there’s The End with a full 11 minutes and 34 seconds peak into the psychosis that made up Jim Morrison, the intellectual, rebellious, loving, insecure bastard posing as a confidant man. Note: album was close to a 3 star rating because as I said, not their best. But taking into consideration it was their debut album, some of the specific tunes on the album along with the fact their is no 3 star rating, went with 4.
The album with my favourite closing song of all time
Impression: A dark, creative album with references drinking, testing perceptual limits with drugs, affairs, death, etc Favorite songs: Soul Kitchen, Light My Fire, The End
A classic. I listened to this a lot as a kid with my grandfather. Jim Morrison was a fucking poet. A real shame that he died so young. I really would have loved to see him churn out so much more music.
Very interesting listen, clear influence on further generations albums
8/10
A classic album, so many hits on it but I feel like you have to be a specific type of person to enjoy this fully. 4/5
Starts out strong and keeps a good, consistent sound. definitely something I could listen to again, and there's a bunch I feel like I've heard before -Soul Kitchen and Light My Fire come to mind. Overall a very nice album
Did not care for this album on my first listen a couple years ago. Enjoyed it much more on this second listen
After an endless British expedition through the desert with only IPAs to drink, 1001 returns to the land of the free and delivers a stone cold classic American record. Full of diesel, sleeze, arrogance. Every track is either perfect or imperfect and interesting. I think at some point recently it became fashionable to hate on the Doors, but that's silly. So what if the poetry is amateur. I'll stand up for you, Jim. You're the ideal brooding wild man. You have one of my favorite quotes on being fat "I was 185 pounds. I felt so great. I felt like a tank. I felt like a large mammal or a big beast. I could knock anybody out of their way." A-
Very fresh for its time. Some of the tracks still have a feel that’s never been imitated well others, like the Kurt Weill standard , must have give Bowie inspiration if not cover to try it himself. I’m still not a Doors fan, but this one LP holds up.
Geen slechte muziek! De band vond Freud zo inspirerend dat ze de band zo hebben genoemd omdat het alle deuren opent heb ik vandaag geleerd
Lyrically, I never really know what's going on with The Doors. I don't really care, though, because I enjoy them musically. With the exception of the more "circus-y" vibe ones.
I dig it
Having no previous exposure to The Doors I listened to their debut album without nostalgia and I still could recognize most of the tracks, that's how influential they are. Very good first album.
Very classic Doors stuff; vocals and instrumentals work perfectly together and the length of songs is fit ideally. Nothing much to say, great album.
I think they would not be as big today if Jim had lived.
Grew up listening to the doors!
