Me when stevie wonder -> 😁😁😆😆😆😆😄😃😃🥳😆🎉🎉😆🙌🙌🙌🎊🎊🎊😁😁😁 My fav stevie is the album made after this one so excited to see what came before Track 1: I love him so much stevie my king Love 10 zillion and love the groove on you haven’t done nothin Refreshing after sex magik and it’s so short! I still like songs in the key of life better but this is very classic stevie and I love Favorite: you haven’t done nothin
Stevie gotta be in top 5 blind people of all time after listening to this album I loved how personal this album felt, the lyrics were incredibly introspective while also being surrounded by groovy little jams that made me bob my head at a low frequency and amplitude but with as much love as any other song I've listened to. Fav Tracks: Smile Please Creepin' You Have Done Nothin'
My favourite was "They Won't Go When I Go".
Not quite at the level of his other classic era albums, but still lovely.
Yeah, Stevie was really bringing it back in the early 70s!
I feel like it's pretty difficult to go wrong with Stevie Wonder. Not every song is a standout, but still listening through is such a good vibe and I know I would enjoy more with every listen. Boogie on Reggae Woman is probably one of the best songs ever and found myself really liking most of them. Top Songs: Boogie on Reggae Woman, You Haven't Done Nothin', Smile Please
This was fun funky fun
Came out in between two of the greatest albums of all time. Not quite as good, but it’s still well worth a listen, and it’s a travesty it isn’t streamed more
It might not be his best album, but you are never going to have a bad time listening to Stevie Wonder. There are a lot of great songs on here, with some fun and playful instrumentation (that Cuica all through "Bird of Beauty" is just amazing). It doesn't quite hit the heights of some of his other 70s output for me. Not enough for a 5.
Some good shit, Stevie wonder really knows how to make a unique funky record. Not the strongest of the classic Line up, but way better than some other albums on the list
A couple great songs, a number of good songs, a few meh songs but nothing horrid (as in I'd rather put chop sticks in my ears). Cutting the difference (taking into account that the good songs might actually be great songs and I heard a lap-steel "geetar") comes out to a solid 4 "grooving hooked with a side of lap steel" stars. ("Zillion" is an informal noun representing an extremely large, indefinite, and exaggerated number: sounds like a nothing-burger, Stevie.)
Actually like it, considering I don’t like Stevie wonder.
Look, this is the fourth best record of Stevie's four album run of greatness. And it's awesome. Some great uptempo songs, a great ballad. Warm, rich, brilliant.
Stevie Wonder never fails to bring such a smooth and wholesome vibe to the table. This is just such an easy album to listen to in literally any setting, you want something chill to play in the background? Stevie Wonder. You want something to entertain you and have your complete undivided attention? Stevie Wonder. I do think that this particular album is the worst of his "big four" if you will, but that isn't really saying much, still as funky and groovy as ever and showcasing what makes Stevie such a musical genuis.
This is a great album. I’d never listened to it in its entirety. I certainly will again.
Es para escuchar un domingo a la mañana mientras entra el solcito. Canciones favoritas: they won’t go when i go (me hizo pelota), Creepin’ y please don’t go.
I was jamming!!
I LOVE
it was good
fun! iconic! easy listening!
Delightful
buena opción para un lunes en el tránsito vehicular
Never listened to a Steviw Wonder album before. I tend to think of him only in terms of singles. This is a good album. I listened to it in the background a few times 8mes, so not that closely. But, it grew on me. I really like the two funky songs, Reggae Women and You Haven’t Done Nothin. At first I dismissed the rest as boring, meandering 70s pop of the kind that gave the 70s a bad name, like a premium version of Captain and Tenille or something. But I think it's better than that, though still not something I would seek out. Solid work, Little Stevie.
this is easily the worst of the stevie albums on the list but even a bad stevie album is still pretty good
Joya
Easy listening imo, very vibes - NS
Enjoyed this immensely! Great artistry, backups were superb, recording is great. Some of these songs are as complex as symphony pieces. More please!
Not quite Talking Book or Songs..., but prime Stevie Wonder is a treasure. Every song is just a pleasure to listen to.
felt after a nap. favorite was creepin i think.
Gives retro romcom type vibes Boogie on the reggae woman is like a having oreos on a summer vacation (my fav song in this album)
Not what I expected but enjoyed nonetheless
Definitely not my favorite Stevie album. Very sleepy. But even when his tracks are at their least memorable, the music still takes over and holds up. He even speaks Portuguese on this one! Highlights: You Haven't Done Nothin, Bird of Beauty
This was a welcome relief. I love the interplay of instruments on this album and Wonder is an actual genius.
Ok. I was wrong. I thought this album had entirely escaped me. I was, however, familiar with "You Haven't Done Nothin," and it sounded fantastic. Even more, the album's mood (though mostly much more toned down than the above track) was brilliant. Less funk and more jazz in Wonder's hands proved to be marvelous. Track to track, I just enjoyed the listen. The production and sound are so clean, you can hear every instrument individually. Great stuff.
Previously, I had only delved into the shallow end of the soul/funk pool and even less so with Mr. Wonder. I had up to this point only heard Superstition due to it being a huge hit, but this record really opened me up to trying more Stevie. Songs in the Key of Life was always something I'd "get to eventually" with how big it is in online music discourse, but man I wish I took that step soon after this listen. The funky instrumentals got me wanting to get up and dance in the office or the more tender moments have you sitting with just the music and Stevie's vocals pondering life. Such a powerful voice that can cut through the instrumentals and deliver amazing performances to fit any mood this record presents. Boogie on Reggae Woman was an especially soaring high point. Again great vocal delivery with some high energy ad libs and a fucking incredible instrumental that's got you swinging, then that harmonica kicks in and absolutely rips the rest of the track in its direction. Very fucking awesome track. As if that's not enough, Creepin' comes through with this smooth feeling and delivers a gut punch with its verses that take me straight back to yearning for somebody who may not even be aware of you. The backing vocals on the chorus are just the cherry on top to an emotionally poignant song like this. Not to mention surprise feature by the Jacksons on You Haven't Done Nothin' a song that still sadly applies to the modern political landscape just as much as it did then :(. The emotionally high point, They Won't Go When I Go gave me actually goosebumps, the piano is so simple here but sets the perfect mood for Wonder to layout some incredibly thoughtful and introspective lyrics after experiencing such a personally tragic shake up in life. Overall, really glad to have finally given a Stevie album a shot. Some incredible songs on here, and this isn't even his peak according to fans. Absolutely incredible.
soo fun to get ready to in the early morning before going to london car music at its finest!
bastante bueno me gusto harto la vdd
First time truly digging into a Stevie Wonder record and I must say it was a pretty great time. Really enjoyed the variety of these tracks. From heartfelt ballads to songs that make you want to tap your feet and start dancing. I would give this a very strong 4, not quite a 5, but great overall. Thumbs up
My favourite Stevie Wonder album.
Ending my week with some Stevie Wonder is always a welcomed thing. This album was a lot of fun. Funky, groovy, and the only way Stevie can. While I don't think its better than "Songs in the Key of Life" (which I've already gotten) and it didn't do enough for me to give it a 5, it was still an enjoyable record to listen to. 4/5
A bit of a step down from other Stevie Wonder albums - definitely still a good album, but missing the star power of Songs in the Key of Life and Innervisions. Love Stevie's growly voice.
preciso escutar mais
An enjoyable listen, can't go wrong with Stevie Wonder. Not as good as Innervisions that we had a few months back but still very good.
I objectively liked everything about this album, but for reasons I can't find words for, I just couldn't get into it. I'd be curious to hear a mix with drums brought up just a hair more and see what difference that makes, cause my best guess is the groove was just barely not forward enough. Not a bad thing at all, and I'll be revisiting this album later.
Not usually my style, but big production, big arrangements
beautiful album, beautiful lyrics
This was fun, the only classic album I hadn’t heard before. Both sweetly mellow and to me-tapping funky- I will be coming back to this.
Loved this! Such a great groove album.
This has enough really good stuff to rate it a 4 I think. It's not my favorite SW album but very good.
Not Stevie’s best but a fun, solid album. A sort of preview for the greatness to come soon.
Really good. Standouts are Heaven, Boogie, Creepin', Nothin', and They Won't Go
This was interesting. It’s not my opinion that an album needs hits to be great, but when it’s Stevie Wonder, you kind of expect to encounter a few. Without them, this gave the impression of being an amazing compilation of B sides, “another side” of Stevie, and mostly a darker side. I enjoyed it a lot but also didn’t encounter that moment that made me say “wow I will listen to this album until the end of time.” But my opinion might change as I better understand Stevie in the context of the whole project.
Good Jazz
1 - Smile Please (joyous and upbeat with a hook made up of nonsense words. The music was just pouring out of Stevie at this time so this opener sets an incredible mood) 4/5 2 - Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away (a slower start to this one. Stevie really shows how well his songs modulate even within individual lines. Lyrics addressing inequality head on but hidden under the relatively bright instrumentation) 4/5 3 - Too Shy to Say (a spacey love ballad with some more signature modulation. Not too much to say about this save for the drifting in space feeling) 3.5/5 4 - Boogie On Reggae Woman (some cool jazzy chords float on top of a funk groove. Gives it a very boogie feel. The harmonica solo almost sounds like a guitar; a very nice touch) 4.5/5 5 - Creepin' (an acceptable mid tempo ballad carried by the synth and Minnie Riperton's feature on the song) 3/5 6 - You Haven't Done Nothin' (a powerful groove and horn stabs anchor this song. Stevie is full of righteous fury in his performance here. A highlight of this album) 4.5/5 7 - It Ain't No Use (another very welcome feature from Minnie Riperton lifts up this otherwise ordinary mid-tempo piece. A little noodly towards the end) 3/5 8 - They Won't Let Me Go (a ghostly and morose piano ballad, quite a change in direction for Stevie. Not usually interested in the slower songs but this one strangely left a lasting impression on me) 3.5/5 9 - Bird of Beauty (a return to a more upbeat sound after 2 relatively dour songs. There's a heavy emphasis on samba and salsa stylings and the song even features Stevie doing a verse in Portuguese, which he handles rather well) 4/5 10 - Please Don't Go (this closer sort of fuses all the previous elements of this record including the funk grooves, modulations, harmonica, choir backing, and even the noodling in the last minute. An excellent closer) 4.5/5 OVERALL - 7.8/10
Stevie Wonder is chill and funky. This album is smooth like butter. Top tracks: "Creepin'," "Smile Please," "You Haven't Done Nothin'," "Boogie On Reggae Woman"
—Smile Please…don’t tell me to smile, Steve! Easy listening but Wonder is better at easy than almost everybody —Heaven is 10 Zillion Light Years Away…I prefer Wonder funk over Wonder romantic/religious schmaltz but he earns this one —Too Shy to Say…schmaltz —Boogie on Reggae Woman…here we go. More of this, please —Creepin’…not exactly funky. but the slinky bass and subtle instrumentation prevents it from descending into cheesy territory —You Haven’t Done Nothin’…I’ve always been a sucker for clavinet and I’m pretty sure it’s Stevie’s fault. Jackson 5 on background vocals? Not fair —It Ain’t No Use…great production. Decent song —They Won’t Go When I Go…a haunting dirge —Bird of Beauty…the clavinet is back which means it’s awesome —Please Don’t Go…fun and funky closer
Stevie Wonder is frequently such a font of exuberance - even when telling off a president ("You Haven't Done Nothin'") - that him being bummed out, as he sounds on about half this album, could feel like a disappointment. And on first listen that was exactly how I felt - like I was being deprived of something. The second time through, with less entitlement, I heard the mournful sounds and rhythms on "They Won't Go When I Go" (which Hozier may or may not have pilfered for "Take Me to Church") and understood better what was going on. Not his best but justly regarded as worthy of his Seventies hot streak of great albums.
this album is such deeply introspective and understated entry in his classic run and expansive sound of albums like Innervisions for something more spiritual, minimal, and emotionally raw. The album leans into moody arrangements and reflective themes - touching on faith, mortality, and political frustration while still delivering moments of groove and sharp commentary, especially on tracks like “Boogie On Reggae Woman” and “You Haven’t Done Nothin’.” Though it may lack the immediate impact of his more famous releases, its subtlety is its strength, rewarding listeners with a cohesive, late-night atmosphere that feels personal and honest, making it one of his most quietly powerful works. Its an underrated masterpiece that have been overlooked due to the albums around it.
funky
A good album, really enjoyed the track, they won’t go when I go
Funky jazz. Would listen again.
Great funky R&B album. I've always liked Stevie Wonder, but I've enjoyed digging into his albums.
Gorgeus. One of the better voices ever. The only lack is that this Guy made another álbum that its just better
The perfect sunny Sunday album. A great listen from beginning to end. Such a timeless sound and a great album to start my journey with.
no tengo igual mucho que decir pero pues bacano, estuvo bueno pero no súper especial a mi gusto pero si muy bueno
If this is his 4th best album we are in great shape for the next 3
I don't trust anyone who doesn't enjoy Stevie Wonder, and this is one of his best albums.
I really enjoyed the album, although I wasn’t actively listening. It grooved well and went by quick, fun listen of an album I haven’t heard before.
7/10
Rösten är ren soul musiken likaså. Oerhört lättlyssnat men det saknar bett. En fyra
An easy and enjoyable listen from start to finish. Truly a great album.
It's not his best but still damn good
He really didn’t miss for that whole five album run. You Haven’t Done Nothin’ is kinda just Superstition again. Favorites were Heaven Is 10 Zillion Lightyears Away, Boogie On Reggae Woman, and It Ain’t No Use. I still don’t buy him being blind.
Not as good as songs in the key of life but a great album all the same
4 músicas desse álbum eu amei, o ritmo o estilo, da vontade de ficar desenhado ou jogar algum jogo relaxante, teve uma que fiquei desconfiado pela letra, pretendo pesquisar depois
We're Stevie respecters around here. I've only ever listened to Songs in the Key of Life before, so I'm excited to get another record under my belt here. Expecting more of what I know he can do. Smile Please - The growls and the diddy-bongs are quite charming. Lovely little tune. Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away - Jesus. Perfectly decent gospel number. Too Shy To Say - Beautiful tune on this one. Quite like the arrangment of just the piano and slide guitar. Gorgeous. Boogie On Reggae Woman - Not sure I fully vibe with this one. Funky for sure, but not a lot of movement and it ended when something actually ear-catching was finally going on. Creepin' - Really interesting mood with this one. Major key and relatively happy sounding, but this slithery organ line and the slightly uncomfortable chord progressions really stay true to the title. You Haven't Done Nothin' - Yes to this one. Just a full on Stevie rocker. It Ain't No Use - Another one that I feel stays in its own pocket for a bit too long. Groovy baseline, but I want more things to happen with this material. They Won't Go When I Go - Heard this one before, and of course the George Michael version. Absolutely stunning. Bird of Beauty - Definitely still riding the high of the last song. Love the elevator samba going on around here. Totally about it. Please Don't Go - Decent enough track to close it out. Not much to say on this one, but it's pleasant enough while it's on. Certainly a pretty good album. High highs and the worst it gets is middling. Feel like I would say that I like Songs in the Key of Life more, but I'll for sure turn to this if I want a more bite-size Stevie. Because holy shit, They Won't Go When I Go. Will definitely be seeing this on my shelf soon.
Mycket bra! Bästa tycker jag är You haven't done Nothin'. Väldigt bra låt. Jag gillar detta mycket och tycker det håller än.
Favourite Songs: Boogie On Reggae Woman Creepin' You Haven't Done Nothin'
It's Stevie. Not sure anything else needs to be said.
Highlights: Boogie On Reggae Woman, You Haven’t Done Nothing, Please Don’t Go and Smile Please. 4.0
Pas le meilleur album de Stevie Wonder mais j'ai vraiment passé un super moment en sa compagnie. Album plaisant du début à la fin. Note : 4 À réécouter : Oui
Pas le meilleur album de Stevie mais des sonorités très intéressantes 😉
Cooles Album, sehr guter Klang und tolle Texte :)
Even though hes blind, he just wont miss
MDS É O STEVE WONDER!!!! FAVS (top 3): too shy to say, creepin, it aint no use mençoes honrosas: smile please, boogie on reggae woman, they wont go when i go gente muito bom ele arrasa mesmo de mais as musicas com otimos vocais E instrumentos imagina ser assim nota final: 4/5
instantly resonates with a sound i always seem to be looking for, got to dive more into stevie, such great musicianship, loved the sound pallete and the dark minimalistic vibe, every tune has its great moment, just a pleasure to listen to, two seventies records in a row; completely different vibe, both bangers tho
Not much to say that I haven't on the other Stevie albums. Just an amazing soul album that is peak Stevie. I know I rated one of the other Stevie albums on the list a 3, but I should go back to that one and see if I should bump it up to a 4. Feel like everything should be a 4 except for Songs in the Key of Life which is the obvious 5. A little slower of an album here, and I'm not huge on Boogie on Reggae Woman, but yeah. Great album.
Not a Stevie I knew but perfect kitchen boogy music.
O cegueta sabe muito da música
Tão bom que nem vi a hora passar
It was nice. I liked how relaxing it felt in tone. Man it's fine as hell. Might be more too and I just can't grasp it...
Maybe a little more soul and a little less funk than I was hoping for, but it's still Stevie and it still sounds excellent
Another album from Stevie’s “Golden Period.” There are plenty of excellent songs here, but this album does quite have the magic of Talking Book or SITKOL. However, few men have achieved the funkiness of the first 30 seconds of “You Haven’t Done Nothin’,” so for that alone it’s an easy 3.5. Shit, I’ll round it up to 4 for Stevie.
Low key parfait pour mettre une petit vibe en travaillant. Quelques tracks shine vraiment fort : heaven is 10 zillion light years away
Fullfillingness' First Finale is one of the lesser-known chapters in Stevie Wonder's legendary 70s run at Tamla, sandwiched between the super-conscious Innervisions and the embarrassment of sonic riches we call Songs in the Key of Life. it's interesting that it's fallen to the wayside (relatively speaking), considering it hit #1 on the Billboard 200 and produced two top-10 singles! if anything, I view this as proof of Wonder's mastery of the art of pop songwriting; even his lesser successes from this period are extremely successful! there's one big reason I'm assuming that FFF (pronounced "triple F") hasn't attracted as much attention over the decades: foreshadowing the more tender emotional core of Key of Life, this is the most mellow set of tracks I've heard from Wonder so far. lots of these songs lean heavily introspective and romantic, and there's no one stand-out that makes me think, "okay, this is the big single" (even though there were two)! there's some moments of higher energy, particularly the #1 hit "You Haven't Done Nothin'", a sequel of sorts to Wonder's other famous anti-Nixon song, "He's Misstra Know-It-All" (except this one features the Jackson 5 going "Doo-da-wop!"). there's still no shortage of harmonic progressions to send shivers down one's spine, or hair-raising melodies to match, but there's a subtlety and sparseness at play. be sure not to mistake it for a lack of something! decent 8/10.
Very soothing
I really want to give this 5 stars and maybe on a second listen I will. Compared to the other big Stevie Wonder albums of the 1970s, I actually wasn't familiar with any of these songs before today. I need to give it a better listen, but still great.
I think Mr Wonder has definitely gained an advantage by popping up immediately after the abominable Rufus Wainwright. The two are like chalk and cheese. This is an album of good songs sung well. No channel hopping which annoyed me on one of his other albums and even his use of harmonica was constrained. No standards. But then none of his utter shite either (there's a reason that there is no post 1976 Stevie Wonder albums on this list). Thisis the first time I've heard the original They Won't Go When I Go. I love the George Michael version and loved this version too.
Favorite Track: Please Don't Go
I mean, it's prime Stevie. What do you need, a roadmap? Maybe not as strong as some other records of this period in his career, but still funky and soulful. I maybe wish it was a little more fun. Also lol at this being his 17th album at the age of 24.
Liked it
Stevie is always good for what ails you. I only knew his hits, not the full albums. Lovely to get the chance through this project to delve into some of his discography. This album has a couple of his greats and a couple discoveries, and also features some of that distinctive 1970s orchestral arrangement that I don’t love, which settles it into 4 territory for me.
I'll be honest, if I was listening to this in the middle of summer, rather than a wet and dreary afternoon in February, I'd probably have given it another star.
Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Great - Stevie's golden run is pretty incredible. This has some absolutely wonderful songs on it. Heaven Is 10 Zillion Lightyears Away is brilliant, Boogie On Reggae Woman is excellent, and there are other great moments scattered throughout. Not the best of that run but a monumental album in its own right.
Don't think I have every listened to a complete SW album - this one is particularly laid back and chill with a few recognisable single releases
Thoughts before listening: I love Stevie's 70s music with Songs in the Key of Life being a recent obsession. I don't know what's on this album, but I'm expecting more of the same poppy, soulful funk. Review: Ok so this has "Boogie on Reggae Woman" on it. I mainly know that song because if Phish's cover, but it's an all time great. I don't recognize the rest of this album, but it mainly sticks to the same 70s funk and soul Stevie's known for. I can understand why Songs in the Key of Life, Innervisions, and Talking Book get most of the attention, but this is still a very enjoyable album. 4-stars
To shy to say was a great love song with very interesting chord progressions. The whole album can be said to be an ode to piano. Really enjoyable listen.
Sehr schöne Musik, Wusste nicht mal das es Stevie ist
Stevie Wonder was undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians of all time. The way he could write a hit, and elevate it to the next level with discrete theory -- insane. Of the four albums on this list, I think this one definitely comes in last place. But even still, it's a 4. What a treat. Fave tracks: - Smile Please - Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away - Boogie On Reggae Woman - Creepin' - You Haven't Done Nothin' - It Ain't No Use - Bird Of Beauty
Equal parts sincere and funky
You can never go wrong with 70s Stevie. That was a cozy warm blanket
Its good stevie No bad stevie Still stevie but
Starting this 1001 albums thing, I was specifically looking forward to Stevie Wonder's so-called "classic period," none of which I'm really familiar with beyond some of the most popular singles. So here's the first one. There's no filler here, and every track feels like a whole different idea. It sounds fantastic and there's a lot to the sound that feel new to me, even though I can see how it was imitated by people for the next 15 years. I can't avoid saying embarrassingly obvious stuff like "Holy shit, Stevie Wonder can sing!" My high points: Side two. All of it, but maybe especially "You Haven't Done Nothin'" and "Please Don't Go." 4.5. but choosing to round down and will see if I second guess that.
Muy bien para pasar una tarde de descanso.
Fun album to drink coctails to. Very groovy, amazing voice
Thought I wasn’t gonna like it. Turns out I did
As much as I love Stevie and his style, this album was ok but not really my thing.
heaven is 10 zillion lightyears away
the vocalizing around halfway through they wont go when I go sounds like that one high schooler that's on the college team in pitch perfect and gets their team disqualified for it favorite song: you haven't done nothing
So it’s not Songs In The Key of Life but like, still bloody great
I really like this album! It’s different from other songs I’ve heard from him. I enjoyed the piano and harmonica on this album a lot. Fav tracks: Boogie on Reggae Woman, Creepin’, You Haven’t done Nothing, Please Don’t Go.
The ballads on this one are a liiiiiil bit boring (sacrilegious I know), but then when Stevie’s firing on all cylinders with the upbeat pop stuff there’s really no one better. I prefer other albums of his but this is solid
FUCK STEVIE DOES NOT MISS THIS ALBUM IS AMAZING. I love how well controlled the production is whilst still remaining lush and free-flowing. I mean this in the sense that it's cohesive but so dynamic in the styles of music Stevie covers. Will come back to this again!!!!
Loved it - Stevie is the definition of easy listening. Not a style of music I would normally listen to but glad I did. Couple of tracks didn’t work for me which kept it from being a 5.
I’m always impressed with how timeless every Stevie Wonder album sounds, and this is no exception. The musicianship, melodies, and song structures are god tier. I particularly enjoyed “Boogie On Reggae Woman,” which would be a banger in any era.
Stevie Wonder's 17th studio album, released in 1974. Stevie Wonder is an artist I've never really sat down and gone through the discography of or even chunks of. I've heard a few songs here and there as the man's music is still beloved to this day. But he is on the list. (A phrase I feel like I'm always repeating about music/books/movies/shows/games/etc.) Reading some of the day critiques and from today retrospectives, it's very highly praised. Seems the album is about a more personal reflection that came off the back of another album (Innervisions) that was a socially consiousness critique of the time. Perhaps there's a fuller picture of this album's messages that would be better served by listening to that first but that's not really what this "One Album A Day" thing is about. After listening to this feel like some of the critiques and retrospectives were exaggerating a litttle. The songs are all good but not many of them have a message. I'd say a good half are just good songs that are intended to be bops. And there's nothing wrong with that but to use one example to represent the whole: "Fulfillingness' First Finale, in contrast, projected a more reflective, personal, and somber tone." I wouldn't describe the whole album like this. There's some sombre and/or reflective songs featured on this album but it's not indicative of the whole album to say that. There's some grooves for the moves too. 'They Won't Go When I Go' is probably the most moving (as in emotionally) as the song was created after the car accident in 1973 that left Stevie Wonder comatose. Overall I liked the album however none of these songs made it into any of my playlists. None quite hit the desire to hear again. That doesn't take away from the craft of this album. It is well made and does display in part why Stevie Wonder is such a legend.
Gorgeous and comforting sound. Not his best but still so good
8.5/10
Another one from his classic period! Exactly what you expect. This is soul food for the soul.
The Moog on Boogie On Reggae Woman alone earns this album a high rating. Great listen.
Love Stevie. This did not disappoint.
Enjoyed!
good vibe music i really enjoyed the intro wish more songs took that approach but i can see exactly what Stevie was going for especially for the time it was made very fun good percussion mixed with beautiful chords, some with hard bass and nice ear candy
I am a Stevie wonder Stan love him
They won´t go qhen I go es excelente. Lindo álbum. Su voz de por si es espectacular y sube siempre el puntaje.
Stevie Wonder. Great vocals, lovely flow, and simply a smooth listen. The man's got range and talent. Honestly probably won't stick for me very long, but I respect his work with soul music.
Doesn't feel quite as inspired as his other exceptional albums, but even "lesser" Stevie Wonder is miles above some artist's best work. Not nearly the bangers on this record, but a few great tracks I've never heard from him.
Solid album; not his best work but if you love soul and funk it's always good
What a feel good album! I was really busy with work while I listened to this so I didn't write anything down and then it was the weekend and I've completely forgotten about anything I could possible write in terms of critique or praise. I remember liking it but I'm not sure if I'll revisit it much.
Love me some Stevie. This is great. Cool R&B, some psych stuff, good pop and blues. Classic.
Supremely soulful and lovely to listen to, some real grooves and highlights on here. Delightful
amazing
As always with Stevie, some tracks are 5+ stars, and the slow ballads are really bad.
Silky and warm, languid.
Vibes are impeccable, album is so cohesive, I’m really into this.
I will say, this may have been my favorite album by Stevie so far. I liked it more than Songs in the Key of Life and Innervisions as it seemed much more down to Earth and polished....even though it was done before Songs of Key of Life. It didn't seem to have as much experimentation or other little gimmicks, it was just smooth and thoughtful all the way through. They Won't Go When I Go is such a great song and is completely underrated. After his car accident, I think this song is a good reflection on how a near death experience can change someone. Bird of Beauty is also a great song. I love the sample of......what sounds like a straw being pushed in and out of a plastic cup lid. I have no other way of explaining that sound of whatever it is. The album one album of the year and a slew of awards, so i'm not sure how underrated it is today, but there's none of his huge singles on there, so I can see how it could get overlooked today, but it's pretty great.
Never listened to this one before but have heard a couple of the songs. Nice record
Great first start! Funky and relaxing
Listened while driving to and from my daughter's soccer class. I mean what else is there to say, it's Stevie Wonder of course it's going to be great. It doesn't have many of his all time classics but it's consistently good all the way through.
Boogie on reggae woman was one of my favorite songs in high school, though I didn’t know what it was called or what Stevie was saying. Still slaps.
Another record that I only know from the singles, since I never had a copy and wasn't ever really into Stevie Wonder at the time. It was great to hear "Boogie On Reggae Woman" again for the first time in a while. I love that funky bassline, it sounds kind of like an electronic tuba. And "You Haven't Done Nothin'" sadly still hits pretty hard today. A great funk track. Some of this was more mellow than what I usually like, but hey, if you have to have mellow music, it might as well be this, right? There's not an off note in any of it; the arrangements and harmonies all work well and are all varied enough for the record to be interesting as a whole. I have a friend who saw Stevie Wonder in England last year, and she said it was a great show. So good to see he's still at it.
Strong 4
8.5/10
4/5 album for me 7/10 album for sawyer 7.75 Luke
Part of a string of brilliant albums by Stevie Wonder. You could buy these on vinyl for under $5 back in the 90s, and I've never stopped listening to my copy. Every song is beautiful, catchy, and technically flawless. I give this one 4 stars as his other albums from the era are even better.
Неплохой соул-альбом. Слушать в наушниках под спокойное настроение.
Pretty good
This one is so good! I don’t think it’s as good as Keys but you will always learn some shit listening to Stevie
Liked it
4.5 - love Stevie!
Even though this is not the best album during the golden era of Stevie, it still delivers a warm and cozy feeling...even when you are "in the raw under the stars above."
8/10
Soulful, quiet, and relaxing.
Not over the top happy clappy and complex in a very pleasing way
I didn’t appreciate Stevie Wonder enough back in the day, when I was young. Listening to this album now, I really like it and think it’s quite good. I will be listening to it again. Four stars.
Definitely not the best album ever produced by Stevie Wonder - BUT - it’s still Stevie Wonder
Extremely lovely
Det tredje Stevie Wonder-albumet på de første 42 dagene. Dette er albumet som ble gitt ut mellom Innervisions og Songs In The Key Of Life, hans to mest anerkjente album. Top 3: Creepin’, Smile Please, Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away
Definitely a Stevie Wonder classic. I’m not sure who the producer was for this album, but my god did they nail it. The backing vocals through the album were so lit.
8/10
Wonderful listen. Good music, great vocals.
I listened to this like 6 times in a row. Such good vibes
Another album of impeccable vibes from Stevie. Quite fun to bop along to.
Of all of the albums by Stevie Wonder from the 1970s that I've heard, this is the one that is most consistently very good but never breaks into truly great territory. Which isn't to say that it's a bad album, it certainly is very good, but there's no specific song on here that I think outdoes any of the others. It's an incredibly consistent listen and I love when Stevie goes into full funk mode, but I was still left wishing that there was more excellence on display here.
Boogie on Reggae Woman goes crazy!!! I was surprised by the modern sounding production elements of this. I listened to this on the subway (and while getting lost in a subway station) and that’s a really great place to listen to this one (minus the getting lost).
Very good
Didn’t know this album, but will repeat listen.
While there are better Stevie albums, even better Stevie albums of the 70s, this is still a banger with only some filler songs. Boogie on Reggae Woman!
Pretty great. Went a lot wider sonically than I expected. Definitely might relisten at some point.
Nada que ver
Literally so good, knew it with Stevie Wonder. Def will go back and listen!
Lindo álbum, es como un apapacho de Stevie hacia ti. Don't mess your face up with bitter tears 'Cause life is gonna be what it is A veces solo queda sonreír y seguir
OOOO, love this
-10 songs, 42 mins -Release date: July 22, 19 -Fav Song: Heaven is 10 Zillion Light Years, -Least Fav Song: They Won’t Go When I Go -Thoughts: I can see Smile Please become a remind song for myself, it has good vibes in the beat and also in its lyrics. Heaven is 10 Zillion Light Years away is very beautiful and sad but still very relatable to this day with race issues still being prevalent in today’s society, and although it’s inherently sad with it lyrics it just hits your soul like the song Colors by Black Pumas (standout for lyrics/message). Too Shy To Say is a love song to a friend who’ve you fell in love with but your to shy to tell them everything that they make you feel, I find this very relatable i’ve definitely have been in a situation like this. Boogie On Reggae Woman was a complete switch up from the previous songs vibe, the vibe is fun and the lyrics are fun (standout for vibe shift). Creepin’ brought the album back to the chill vibe with a love song about your partner creeping into your dreams. You Haven’t Done Nothin’ was a vibe shift again and i hear this song as both a political and personal statement, it can represent someone who’ll say their change but never does but also by politicians who do the same by saying they care but in reality do the opposite. It Ain’t No Use brings the vibe back down and it’s about not trying to fix a relationship and breaking up because they’re just not meant to be. They Won’t Go When I Go to me is just about how sinners won’t go where he goes because he’s not a sinner (not my fav just due to my lack of relating but incredible vocals). Bird of Beauty switched the vibe again and it live for it, it gives a vacation song and vibe. Please Don’t Go brings back the mellow vibe but it’s also a hype mellow vibe in the beat, it’s about a lover trying to leave, but he’s trying to stop her saying he’ll do everything she wants him to because he would be sad without her. -Would I listen to it again: 100% it was am amazing album to listen to
big fan of this one
Not my favourite Stevie wonder album but hell yeah
This might be the least of the Stevie records that ive heard so far. It doesnt have as memorable songs as key of life or talking book. But its still a Stevie record. Even the worst one is still pretty dang good. I got a handful of songs saved but not every single song like those others. Still very much worth it. If someone told me this was their favorite id have to respect it. Not for me personally but I get it. Whats not to love?
Favorite Songs: Creepin', It Ain't No Use, Bird Of Beauty Least Favorite Song: Too Shy To Say Stevie Wonder is incapable of missing EVER.
Funky, groovy, joyful. Nothing standing out but all really smooth
Stevie Wonder is always welcome. Fave track: Boogie on Reggae Woman
that one song which Leonardo DiCaprio says his favorite, I just wanna say understand why
not usually my type of music but i fw it
I think it was an amazing album. If you hear ir, it has different vibe from 70's and 80's, The voice of Stevie Won der contribute to that fact, and make the entire album so fluid to listen, thet you doesn't even realized when is over, you can hear it in an eternal loop if you want and you probably wouldn't be bored, bou hypnotized by the funky guitars and the hilarious harmonies and melodies created by all the instruments, they don't sound separently, they join and sound as one. My favorite song was Heaven is 10 Zillion lights away, tha guitar really took me to and special place, the melody is so calm that I wanted to erase everi bit of anger I ever had in my life.
Please don't go
take us to church stevie!
I liked it
Doesn't really have any big songs on it that would make it stand out from the pack, but Stevie Wonder was just on another level in the mid-70s. This is his *weakest* album of the era, and yet it's such a mood-raiser, even on my first day back at work after the holiday!
This album feels so powerful, put it on in the background but feels like it demands to be listened to, demands to be understood.
Though very solid (as expected from a stevie wonder album), not as good as some of his best work
Smooth, but a little soft
The cover & title of this album already make me happy. Not to mention that i love anything created by Stevie!
Favorite Track: Boogie On Reggae Woman
Wow, what an album! Great pop songwriting experimentation. These songs always go somewhere interesting and create such a vibe. Definitely gotta check out more of his discography!
Not his best, but great listen
Solid from Stevie, 3 stars for two songs alone
I don't actually care for Stevie Wonder's singing all that much, but damn if I wasn't hooked into the subtle funky grooves on this album.
It's been a pleasure to get some exposure to Stevie Wonder's work throughout this project. I enjoyed this album, and although I found it less immediate than other albums from his "Classic Period", there were some really great tracks here.
stevie wonder truly a wonder love the vocals, the lyrics, its groovy its fun
An easy listen from start to finish, definitely a stage when Stevie Wonder became more experimental in his career. I personally prefer his later album, Songs In The Key Of Life. Although this album has some really stand out songs that sound modern and fresh even today. There are many reasons why this album stands out to me against the rest of the music from the 70’s. One being the use of his iconic harmonica. Love the addition of the moog bass which delivers the classic Stevie Wonder sound. The use of all the backing vocalists, making the songs sound almost like a gospel choir, and even the way he sings in songs like ‘You Haven’t Done Nothin’’, repeating the line ‘Doo-doo-wop’ makes you feel like ur hearing it live and he’s interacting with an audience. All in all a masterpiece full of groove & character. Favourite tracks are: ‘Boogie On Reggae Woman’, ‘You Haven’t Done Nothin’’, ‘Bird Of Beauty’, and ‘Please Don’t Go’.
Album funk c’était cool
When to listen: Want relaxed AND uplifted
7/10
Rock and lovely details I love the older vibe
i enjoyed this a lot, i think i liked the second half more but it was really groovy and funky, really good album
Nice to listen to. Quite relaxing.
This one had me up and dancing
it was a really great album just not my regular style, i can definitely see it ending up in my regular playlists tho it’s very soulful
Not his best album but another great listen all the same
Not my favorite collection of his music but got better as the album went on. “You Haven’t Done Nothin’” was excellent.
3.5, not my favorite from Stevie but still pretty good
I'm greatful for this album because it led me to the song "Heaven is 10 zillion light years away". It resonated with me because currently im reading the parable series by Octavia E. Butler and the themes in both song and book go side by side.
A bit all over but solid Stevie. Just pleasant to listen to.
Godt!!!!!
Never properly listened to Steve wonder. Adored too shy to say! So tender LOVE the little laugh at the start. Loved how upbeat this album feels.
such a vibe!
This was not a Stevie album i knew before this. It hits all the classic notes. Boogie on Reggae Woman is enjoyably funky. You haven’t done nothing evokes Superstition with it’s funky accompaniment and is a highlight for that reason. They wont go when i go slows things down and deliver an emotional vocal which probably rescues what would otherwise be a dull track
Firstly, love an alliterative album appellation. If I were only rating Boogie on Reggae Women, the album would be getting a 5/5 without any hesitation. I absolutely loved it. There were other songs I found fairly forgettable, or that I liked but they didn't set my world alight, but I thought that track was great. It has been a surprise to me how much I like funk. And a harmonica. As for everything else, the "bum bum ti didi" part of Smile Please was hysterical. It certainly made a song that I otherwise would have probably instantly forgotten, very memorable. The slower, more plodding, songs were generally less interesting. For me, the best of the bunch of that type was They Won't Go When I Go which I thought was really beautiful and Stevie sounded fantastic. I really enjoyed whenever the female backing vocals kicked in on tracks because they were a really lovely contrast to Stevie's incredible vocals. I have no idea what the weird sound in Bird Of Beauty is, but the vocals were great. You Haven't Done Nothin' sounded like it was going to turn into Superstition as any moment. Which meant it was a really enjoyable song, but slightly disconcerting. I am wishing for a 3.5 again... I think this was more great tracks than forgettable ones, so I'm rounding up. 4/5
Coming in at 10 songs totaling 43 minutes Fulfillingness’ first finale is a great listen (of course it is its Stevie Wonder). This is the perfect album to put on in the morning to get your mind right. Stevie is one of the few artists who make this music thing look easy, almost as if the music is flowing through him. This album feels very improvised, not in a way that seems sloppy, but in a way that feels free. Favorite song: Creepin’
pleasant! boogie on reggae woman is the best track
Stevie Wonder da Goat, sounds timeless but I like his other songs a bit more ngl
Great album
My second Stevie album on here and discovering his greatness has been one of the best parts of this journey. Compared to Talking Book, this album has less punch while being more lush and gorgeous. The song ideas have a more creative edge at times while the slower tracks have just the right amount of atmosphere.
Very good album to study/ chill out after long day. I hesitate between 3 and 4 but gonna give it 4.
That was pretty cool. Though saying that most of Stevie's music is.
Beautifully played, warm, intuitive and smooth funky tunes with gospel flavour. This makes my ears really really happy and heart warm, made with real feeling. Great variety of musicla styles and inventiveness in how this is constructed, but it all fits so cohesively with a sense of effortless musicality. An exceptional album but he has made better which is testament to an INSANE career
Smooth and energetic, great soul.
Heaven is Ten Zillion Light Years Away knocked me OUT. This right here is why I’m so glad I signed up. I would’ve never been turned onto the sweet ethereal rolling funkiness of that track. And the depth ache of They Won’t Go When I Go—I usually try to go around that kind of feeling in music but I feel well rewarded for going in with him. Bird of Beauty was a sweet lift-up afterwards.
Very easy listening, great sound, classic Stevie. Fluid sounds and only 43 minutes, the perfect length for a record. I would DEFINETLY buy. Feeling a 8.5 to 9 even.
How did I miss this all my life?
Overall Rating - 4.20/5 (8.40/10). I didn't know any of these songs, but they were really outstanding. Top-shelf work from Stevie Wonder.
Like candy for my ears
Good
Ingen åpenbare sanger som peker seg ut som «hits», men her er det låter som er utrolig spennende i oppbygging og melodilinjer. Mulig den ville blitt en femmer med flere gjennomlyttinger.
I think it says a lot about the talent of Stevie Wonder when even the less-than-perfect albums still stand miles above 90% of the albums on here. Yeah, it seems cliche to not rate this as highly as Innervisions or Songs In the Key of Life, but it’s not because of the lack of hits. It’s Stevie Wonder, every song sounds like a hit. It’s really due to the second half. It just felt slightly weaker to the first half. But regardless, it’s still Stevie Wonder. Great vocals, great rhythms, great funky beats, that fucking harmonica. Why it took up to this project for me to actually listen to him will forever be a mystery to me. Favorite track: Too Shy to Say Other hits: Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away, Smile Please, Creepin’, You Haven’t Done Nothing, It Ain’t No Use, Bird of Beauty
love the vibe on this one standout tracks: smile please, boogie on reggae woman
Stevie Wonder is a fucking genius. Fulfillingness' First Finale, a brand new tongue twister, is soulful and funky, and is my fourth Stevie Wonder album. His music is so consistent, a feat for any solo musician with multiple albums on this 1001 albums list. I think I listened to this album at least four times because it was just so darn smooth. I'm struck by two songs: the biting "You Haven't Done Nothin'" and the haunting "They Won't Go When I Go". The latter I knew since it was covered by George Michael fifteen years later. Despite my love for Michael, Wonder's voice is unparalleled; it's tender, it's commanding, it's unrelenting. In one breath, Wonder criticizes then-President Nixon's inaction, and in the next he reaffirms his righteous path.
Much like its predecessor (Innervisions), this album continues the path to striking a balance between soul and funk. While this is ultimately more tame, there are a couple of songs (namely, "Boogie on Reggae Woman" and "You Haven't Done Nothin'") that show a big dip back into that heavy funk sound. This is the fourth Stevie Wonder album I've reviewed as part of this project, and while he plays in different genres, what I can say is that Stevie is wildly consistent. His music is innovative but highly listenable. Like all of other of his albums here, this is an easy 4 for me. Boogie on, Stevie Wonder!
Layers like a patisserie croissant, equally buttery.
What it lacks in certifiable hits it makes up for in excellent playing, good songs and a sense of confidence. Stevie was firing on all cylinders in a similar vein to David Bowie around this same era. Funky and soulful.
Solid album. Easy to listen to and really enjoyed some of the songs.
My second Stevie album on this list so far. Only slightly pales in comparison to Songs…, Talking Book and Innervisions but only slightly. Still a solid album, and a high 4.
stevie.
Rätt svängigt! I like it, även om det inte finns några riktiga hits här jämfört med resten av hans sicko-era, tycker den här är lite weird att ha med (även om några låtar är superbra!)
Like my second favorite album by him. Still, pretty amazing work by Stevie.
This is buttery as. Could put it on to anything really. it gets a 7.2 from me and manages to round up to 4/5
Not my favorite, but it is very hard to find fault with Stevie Wonder.
interesting to be introduced to this classic period in his prolific recording career. Very smooth, but almost too, slow ? Does one need to be slightly sedated for it to truly roll over you? I cant say 5. but it might grow on me when loungng
ok this album was a bop
fun upbeat album!!!
Stevie Wonder is undeniable. I will say I enjoyed Innervisions more than this one, but this is still gorgeously crafted, intricate music. He's a master.
Yeah, I like this one quite a bit - at least compared to the last Stevie Wonder joint I listened to. Catchy and soulful, and a good length too.
Great vibes, great vocals, instrumentals on point, what’s not to like!
Not Stevie's best, but close to it. A great listen.
I'm not super familiar with many of these songs--I hadn't heard this album before. It lacks the well-known bangers found on Innervision or Songs in the Key of Life. The first track is pretty good and the second track, a gospel song, is actually pretty funky. Too Shy to Say is one of those super whiney Stevie tracks that I can't stomach very well. Boogie on picks up as the best track yet. It carries definite Parliament vibes. Creepin' is a slow but groovy track. You Haven't Done Nothing is even better than Boogie On. Sounds like I Wish. Will definitely poach this for a playlist. Bird of Beauty is pretty good and fun to hear Stevie speaking some Portuguese. Please Don't Go is solid as well. Overall a pretty good album, even sounding and doesn't delve too much into the sappy or depressing songs that drag some of his best albums down a little for me. 4/5
Stevie’s worst from the classic era but still peak
70/100.
I’m 10 Zillion light years away from finishing my architecture studies but this album helped.
A breath of fresh air full of classic Stevland tracks. Wonder's attention to detail in his compositions has always been in place and this album is no exception to that rule. Just a fantastic listen on a beautiful day!
Some greats hits on this album. Love the harmonica!
An amazing album without any standout hits. Pretty impressive.
Vibes, but nothing super memorable
Groovy album. It gave me a but of energy early in the morning. I liked the weirdness of Too Shy To Say. Too busy to write a solid review (not like I do that anyway). This is a 4.
The kind of songwriting where I can't tell if I have already heard the songs or if they spring from such natural, genuine creativity that they SOUND like I've already them. Really fantastic like 4.5 for me Fav song: Heaven is 10 Zillion Light Years Away
4/5
Mid 4
Very enjoyable album, with smooth, soulful and warm vibes throughout. The vocals and musicianship are superb as you'd come to expect from Stevie Wonder, and there are some big high points epitomised by a killer closing track. The album does have 2-3 songs that felt quite bland though, and whilst on the whole it feels very cohesive, the filler moments don't land anywhere near as well as some other tracks.
A good time and a fun listen. Really enjoyed when it dipped into a more electronic funk on some tracks. I would listen again for sure.
My goodness... all Stevie does is make bangers! I never through I would be into a song with the word 'zillion' in it but here we are.
Ihana albumi! Helppoa ja rentoa kuunneltavaa, olisin voinu kuunnella toisen kerran putkeen
Never noticed until today that Stevie's face is on the cover of the album. It's a more laid back affair than it's predecessors and has moments where it strays into sentimentality, but it also has You Haven't Done Nothin' which is biting and funky. Can't believe Stevie never had a UK number album but he played on one that early 2000s pop numpties Blue had. There really is no justice. My favourite track was the plaintive They Won't Go When I Go.
Stevie!!
It just sounds incredible, with unconventional recording techniques that somehow manage to excel with the theme and Wonder's style. It's still distinctively soul, but it's really atmospheric, and you can hear the decades of influence these songs would have on neo-soul from the late 90s to modern age.
C’est Stevie Wonder, ça s’écoute tout seul et en toutes circonstances!
Well done, Stevie! Listening to this album lets me flow smoothly within the melodies. The rich arrangements combine elements of jazz, soul, Latin rhythms, and electronic touches like Moog synthesizers and drum machines. I love diversity! Standout tracks include the funky “Boogie On Reggae Woman” (track 4) and the album’s most famous song, track 8, “They Won’t Go When I Go.” I first encountered this song through George Michael’s 1990 cover. A curiosity: this is primarily a solo project, with Stevie playing nearly all the instruments himself. He is supported by a select group of guest artists and background vocalists, including Minnie Riperton, Paul Anka, Deniece Williams, and the Jackson 5.
Great as always. Slower than the other three I’ve listened to before, but still high-quality hooks and songwriting.
He's just too good at groovin. Could do without him telling me to believe in christian god but I still had a nice time
Wie ein langer Roadtrip in den Sonnenaufgang. Gerade “They won’t go when I go” hat mich geflasht. Vielleicht zukünftig 5 Sterne
Very beautiful.
Had never heard any of the songs on this - and it's really good. Boogie On Reggae Woman is a blast, You Haven't Done Nothin' is amazing, They Won't Go When I Go is deranged but in a good way. Sun is shining here today, and this is the right album.
Can’t wait to hear more Stevie Wonder, this shits good
Literally two days ago this generator had George Michael introducing me to my new favorite song "They Won't Go When I Go" and now here comes another excuse to listen to it fifty seven times. Funny how these things always seem to happen... anyway: not only "They Won't Go When I Go" but actually all of these tracks are great!
Smooth and funky but not an all time classic for me 4/5
I remember when this album came out. The big radio hit (and best song on the album) was Boogie On Reggae Woman, which I could not figure out what Stevie was singing until this listen when I saw the song title and read the lyrics. (Always thought it was “you’re the only woman”.) Never realized it until now, but it sounds like MJ might’ve been influenced by and got some of his ideas from Stevie. Some how I’m becoming a Stevie fan. (4.1*s)
vibey and like the horns
