In between two heavy hitters but still a perfect album in itself

Wonder is wonderful, as always.

Other than catching Stevie Wonder's songs on the radio, I had never really listened to him. I know he is very famous and very good, but this album really surprised me, it was was varied and interesting and his voice is amazing.

Very vibey. Great energy

Stevie Wonder’s albums in this period have an impressive uplifting quality to it. The sort to make you glad to be alive.

"Fulfillingness' First Finale" is the 17th studio album by American singer-songwriter, musician and record producer Stevie Wonder. This album has a more reflective and somber tone than the social consciousness of his previous album "Innervisions." It was also the fourth of five albums considered Wonder's "classic period." The album hit #1 on the US charts and won the 1975 Grammy for album of the year. The album opens with "Smile Please." It's easy and smooth with congas and bongos. A synth melody and Stevie's gentle, soulful voice. A catchy chorus of back and forth vocals between Wonder and Deniece Williams. Smile Everyday! The funk gets going on "Boogie on Reggae Woman." A stew of instruments with the highlight being Wonder on the Moog bass. A harmonica solo too. The one political song "You Haven't Done Nothin'" adds the funk as well. Criticism of the Nixon administration. A clavinet-driven melody. Horns added. The Jackson 5 on backing vocals ending repeating "do-da-wop." Alright! Backing vocals are also prominently featured in "It Ain't No Use." The song starts out easy listening with the synth and then kicks in with vocals of Lani Groves, Deniece Williams and Minnie Ripperton. Very souful. This album is laid back (almost understated), funky, smooth, soulful and even jazzy at times. The lyrics are spiritual, self-relective and political in one case. The high points (previous songs mentioned) are among the best Stevie but the album is also solid throughout. I've completed all five albums of the "Wonder" classic period in this challenge. They are all wonderful (no pun intended) and well worth repeated listens.

Beautiful album. Stevie Wonder just has such a fantastic voice and the music he produces melts like butter. Favourite track : they won't go when I go.

this album was really funky and nice good album that i would like to have as a vinyl disk.

I actually love this album. Not my number one, but still so good. Stevie is always deserves a five star!

Honestly, this album is wasted on me this morning. I'm in a terrible, distracted, stressed, and lovesick mood so its hard to let one of Stevie's masterpieces sink in. Creepin' is sort of a song that I know I like I just don't feel like listening to it right now. They Won't Go When I Go is more my speed today. Bird Of Beauty immediately has my attention. Maybe by the end of Please Don't Go, I'm feeling better. which is a good sign.

I occasionally go through phases where The Best of Stevie Wonder is in high rotation. It's not the official "Best of" but one I rolled on my own, without songs like "I Just Called to Say I Love You", "Part time Lover" and "Overjoyed", for reasons I hope I don't have to go in to. Though "Overjoyed" is on a Yacht Rock Playlist of mine. So when I listened to this album I avoided checking out the track list in advance to be surprised by the tracks. I was surprised by some of them, didn't find anything to add to my "Best of", but already had a couple on there.

just so good please give me more stevie wonder please

Making funk sophisticated, jazz accesible and inspiring the ecclectism of the decade to come! Brilliant!

"Fulfillingness' First Finale," released in 1974, is one of Stevie Wonder's most critically acclaimed albums. This album is a remarkable blend of soul, funk, and pop, showcasing Wonder’s musical genius during what many consider his "classic period." The album delves into various themes and features intricate production, solidifying Stevie Wonder's status as a master of his craft. ### Lyrics **Themes and Content** The lyrics of "Fulfillingness' First Finale" cover a wide array of themes, from social issues to personal reflections. Stevie Wonder addresses the political climate of the 1970s, personal loss, love, and spirituality. 1. **"You Haven't Done Nothin'"** - This song is a direct critique of political leaders, particularly targeting President Nixon. The lyrics are sharp and pointed, reflecting frustration and a call for accountability: "We are amazed but not amused by all the things you say that you'll do." 2. **"They Won't Go When I Go"** - A somber reflection on mortality and the afterlife, the lyrics are haunting and introspective: "No more lying friends / Wanting tragic ends / Though they do pretend / They won't go when I go." 3. **"Creepin'"** - This track explores the nuances of love and longing with poetic and dreamy lyrics: "I can hear you sighin' / Sayin' you'll stay beside me / Why must it be / That you always creep / Into my dreams?" **Narrative and Emotion** Wonder’s lyrics often weave narratives that resonate deeply on an emotional level. His ability to convey complex emotions through simple yet powerful language is a key strength. The narrative in songs like "Too Shy to Say" about unspoken love or "Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away," which contemplates spiritual distance, showcases his lyrical versatility. ### Music **Instrumentation and Arrangement** The musical arrangement in "Fulfillingness' First Finale" is both sophisticated and diverse. Wonder’s use of various instruments, including his signature clavinet, synthesizers, and harmonica, creates a rich sonic tapestry. 1. **Clavinet and Synthesizers** - On tracks like "Boogie On Reggae Woman," the use of clavinet and synthesizers provides a funky, upbeat foundation that drives the song's groove. 2. **Piano and Strings** - "They Won't Go When I Go" features a stark piano arrangement complemented by subtle string sections, creating a mournful and reflective atmosphere. 3. **Percussion and Bass** - The rhythm section is particularly strong throughout the album, with intricate bass lines and percussion that add depth and rhythm to the tracks. **Melody and Harmony** Wonder’s melodic sensibilities shine throughout the album. He employs a wide range of melodic styles, from the soulful balladry of "Too Shy to Say" to the infectious grooves of "Boogie On Reggae Woman." Harmonically, Wonder experiments with complex chord progressions and rich harmonies, enhancing the emotional impact of his songs. ### Production **Technical Excellence** The production quality of "Fulfillingness' First Finale" is top-notch. Stevie Wonder was deeply involved in the production process, and his attention to detail is evident in the album's polished sound. 1. **Sound Engineering** - The album’s engineering, handled by studio wizards like Robert Margouleff and Malcolm Cecil, ensures clarity and balance. Each instrument is given space to breathe, and the overall mix is both dynamic and cohesive. 2. **Innovative Techniques** - Wonder’s use of the TONTO (The Original New Timbral Orchestra) synthesizer system was groundbreaking. This innovation allowed for unique sound textures and was a significant factor in the album’s distinctive sound. ### Themes **Social and Political Commentary** Several tracks on the album provide incisive social and political commentary. "You Haven't Done Nothin'" is a standout example, with its direct critique of political dishonesty. The song became an anthem for those disillusioned with the political system, especially in the context of the Watergate scandal. **Personal and Emotional Exploration** The album also delves into deeply personal themes. "Too Shy to Say" and "Please Don't Go" explore themes of love and heartache, while "They Won't Go When I Go" reflects on mortality and the afterlife. Wonder’s ability to translate personal experiences into universal themes is a testament to his songwriting prowess. **Spiritual and Philosophical Musings** Songs like "Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away" tackle spiritual and philosophical questions. The track ponders the distance between humanity and the divine, blending personal belief with broader existential questions. ### Influence **Musical Impact** "Fulfillingness' First Finale" had a profound impact on the music industry. It influenced a wide range of artists across genres, from soul and R&B to pop and rock. The album’s innovative use of synthesizers and electronic elements paved the way for future explorations in electronic music. **Cultural Significance** The album’s social and political messages resonated with listeners, reflecting the turbulent times of the 1970s. Songs like "You Haven't Done Nothin'" captured the public’s frustration and became part of the cultural dialogue. **Legacy** "Fulfillingness' First Finale" is often cited as one of Stevie Wonder’s greatest works. It won three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, solidifying Wonder's place in music history. The album continues to be celebrated for its artistic depth and innovative production. ### Pros and Cons **Pros** 1. **Lyrical Depth** - Wonder’s lyrics are insightful and cover a wide range of themes, from personal to political. 2. **Musical Innovation** - The use of synthesizers and the TONTO system was groundbreaking, adding unique textures to the music. 3. **Production Quality** - The album’s production is top-notch, with a clear and balanced mix that enhances the listening experience. 4. **Emotional Range** - The album covers a broad emotional spectrum, from the joyous "Boogie On Reggae Woman" to the somber "They Won’t Go When I Go." 5. **Cohesiveness** - Despite its diversity in themes and musical styles, the album feels cohesive and well-structured. **Cons** 1. **Complexity for Casual Listeners** - The album’s lyrical and musical complexity might be challenging for casual listeners who prefer straightforward pop. 2. **Dated Elements** - Some production elements, while innovative at the time, might sound dated to contemporary ears. 3. **Pacing** - The shift from upbeat tracks to slower, introspective songs can feel jarring at times, potentially disrupting the album’s flow. 4. **Accessibility** - The deep and often philosophical lyrics may not be easily accessible to all listeners, requiring multiple listens to fully appreciate. ### Conclusion "Fulfillingness' First Finale" stands as a testament to Stevie Wonder’s genius, blending lyrical profundity, musical innovation, and high production quality into a cohesive and impactful album. While it might present some challenges for casual listeners, its artistic depth and cultural significance make it a landmark in music history. Wonder’s exploration of personal, social, and spiritual themes ensures that the album remains relevant and resonant decades after its release.

Behöver inte ens lyssna på detta underbara album för jag kan det så bra redan❤️❤️❤️❤️

I only knew two tracks. How great to discover this album in its entirety.

Wow, this is a huge improvement over the last Stevie Wonder album I listened to. This was really wonderful to listen to, no notes really, just good vibes

Great album

Not his best of this run, but still a 5

Stevie is so talented, and his voice… amazing. “They won’t go when I go” is one of my favorite songs. George Michael did a fabulous rendition of it.

Stevie Wonder somehow manages to make potentially cheesy or overly-sentimental lyrics work. The chord changes during the songs are so out of the ordinary and fun to listen to. It all just works.

I loved the instruments here and it's Stevie wonder you really can't go wrong great voice and tone.

Very good. Like a high 4 low 5 9/10

Can’t go wrong 9/10

Fun and funky, classic Stevie Wonder. I really enjoyed this album, laid back but upbeat and fun to listen to. 8/10

It is perfect!

I think this Stevie's most consistent album, it doesn't have the songs that soar like on other albums but I don't really wanna skip any songs either. Add to that Boogie on Reggae Woman seems to be my go to Stevie Wonder song for some reason.

Usually near-death experiences come with a resolution, a need to change the way one lives their life. When an album is titled Fulfillingness' First Finale, such thoughts come to mind. The fourth of five (six? seven?) classic albums in the imperial period of Stevie Wonder's long career, not only does it continue down the innovative path Stevie paved for others to emulate but it also signaled a message that the end was near. Not in a apocalyptic sense but, in hindsight, a musical sense. Picking up where Innervisions left off with spirited songs of love and social issues, Fulfillingness' becomes fused with mortality, as exemplified by the haunting highlight They Won't Go When I Go. One more triumphant leap forward followed before the perceived downturn in creativity but, when it is all said and done, no one can deny that the 70s and perhaps beyond would have sounded completely different without Stevie Wonder.

The Muppets turned me on to Stevie when I was a little kid. I've always been so blown away by the bass tone and the way his voice is clear like a trumpet. Just love this!

I never knew this album existed! Loved it.

I have yet to do a deepdive into Stevie Wonder's discography—shame on me. This is incredible. Although not the groundbreaking Songs In The Key Of Life that would follow this project, Fulfillingness' First Finale offers something special in a more condensed package. Every track is overflowing with creativity and some of the most impressive arrangements that I have heard from Wonder. The bass playing was a standout and was mixed so well. I will certainly return to this project many times.

I will start this by saying Stevie Wonder is top 5 artists of all time for me. Be that as it may, this album is underrated. I understand the impulse to think of 10 Stevie Wonder songs you like better, but being prolific shouldn't be a knock. His voice is beautiful, the lyrics are meaningful, and he's wrote and played almost everything on here.

Awesome, no skips. Haven't heard any of these before was a great first blind play through

Some of the best percussion recording of the 1970s. Proper fucking music, this.

What’s not to like

Sublime

I always love to find underrated gems and this is one of them. Although Stevie Wonder is incredibly popular, I've never heard of this album before. The opening song, "Smile Please", is a great chill start. The rest of the album doesn't slack either with songs like "Creepin'", "You Haven't Done Nothin'", "Bird of Beauty", and "Boogie on Reggae Woman". The ending track, "Please Don't Go" is a great finale that lets the album go out with a bang. From the vocals, to the instrumentals, and the harmonica solos in practically every song, this album is amazing. Easy 5/5

This album is so fun!

One of my favorite albums of all time. Smile Please gives me goosebumps every time

stevie wonder is one inspiring mf 4.7/5

Love it so groovy

what can I say except 5/5

I love this album. The first time I listened to it, I couldn't believe "You Haven't Done Nothin" was a number one single, I had never heard the song before and I think that's a great example of modern corporate radio completely neutering popular music. Stevie has a lot of bite in addition to his talent and this album covers so much ground. "They Won't Go When I Go" gives me chills every time. And "Bird of Beauty" is just straight up about tripping with Stevie Wonder, what's not to love.

I am once again soothed.

pop perfection.

The production and instrumentation are very good and unique throughout. I also find the gospel elements and social commentary in the lyrics pretty striking. It takes a minute to sink in, but it's a solid album.

A masterpiece by an unparalleled master!

I'm astounded by the fact that I knew nothing about this album prior to today. There are no recognizable songs for me, and yet, this album has a vibe of familiarity and allure. Not hits -- just incredible vibes. Back to front, there isn't an ounce of disappointment or wasted space here. Will be revisiting the rest of Mr. Wonder's catalogue because I'm just in absolute awe of this man. Standout Tracks: Boogie On Reggae Woman, You Haven't Done Nothin', They Won't Go When I Go

Stevie’s a Mount Rushmore level artist for me so this was an easy five. Often considered one of the “lesser” albums during his Imperial Era (that for me starts with Music of My Mind and continues amazingly all the way through to Hotter Than July), Fulfillingness’ is just as stunning as Innervisions before it, just in a different, more laid back and romantic vein. Whole album is banging from the songwriting, Stevie’s voice, the expert musicianship and more complex and jazzier chord progressions we get here beyond the normal pop music fare. And the background singers! Really stood out to me on this listen. I absolutely love this album.

Sounds so soulful, don’t you agree? Bop after bop. Not as many certified classics as he has on other albums, but still just as fun, thoughtful, and unarguable quality. Incredible production and instrumentation. Stevie’s vocals are always amazing, his lyrics and writing as well. I can’t find anything not to like honestly. 5/5

i love it obv

STEEEEEVIIEEEEE. Probably one of my biggest keybass influences ever

I loved almost every song. I didn't like "Heaven is 10 Zillion..." or "Creepin'" as much. This is my first time listening to a Stevie Wonder record and I thought it was great. I'm amazed to learn he wrote this when he was 24 and that it was his SEVENTEENTH studio album. I look forward to listening to a lot more Stevie. 9/10

This was very mellow and enjoyable.

Stevie's prolific career means that there are great songs that you are just tired of hearing because you've heard it in every grocery store, waiting room, or elevator in your life. This is a less touched album and it really exemplifies his greatness. First listen, I was absolutely blown away. Second listen did not diminish.

The only album from his crazy 5 album run that I hadn't listened front to back yet. Firstly, Boogie on Reggae Woman is one of the greatest songs ever made with one of the synth bass parts ever written. Beyond that, I'm constantly shocked at how all the songs sound like Stevie songs but there's still ALWAYS fresh ideas. They Won't Go When I Go is such a moving piece after such a funky album and I love when he lets the more gospel side of his music out. Not all of his music reaches me emotionally as much as it seems to reach others but his passion for music and his ability to make that passion shine through in how it sounds is completely undeniable and lets all of his music grow on you in different ways until you can't live without it. To me he is the epitome of what music means to the world and I want an international day of mourning when he passes

it’s stevie. i’ll always love it. not his best, but easily enough for a 5

WOW! I expected to enjoy this, but I seriously loved it. Stevie is definitely in his prime here, and the range and creativity especially in orchestration is fantastic. A thoroughly enjoyable listen.

My god, I had never listened to this one but this is my favorite album so far that I HADNT listened to before. I know the albums that flank this one, Innervissions and Songs in the Key of Life. One really cool thing about this one is that the wikipedia has an easy to read full personnel list for each song. Did I know what a T.O.N.T.O. synth was? HELL NO! Did I read an article and still not really understand what it is? HELL YES. They won't go when I go is a new all time track for me. It just hits me overwhelmingly in the solar plexus!

Stevie's voice was much more subdued than I'm used to. First tracks were slower, more folksy, less funky, but still fun and well-harmonized as always. Later tracks got funky like I was expecting -- very nice. Overall a very good album. 5 stars.

It's Stevie Wonder, what more needs to be said?! This is a fantastic album, I will forever love Stevie and it is always a pleasure to hear his music when it comes on. Uplifting and beautiful music created by an incredible person and musician.

The first time I listened to this, it was a 4 pushing for a 5. It's got all 5 now. So damn funky, so damn soulful. Give me more of this. Favorite track: Bird of Beauty

Day44 - crazy how many stevie wonder songs that i don’t know. what a great listen

I have yet to hear a Stevie album that wasn’t ‘fantastic’. Everything about this man and his music is decades ahead of everyone else.4.5

This was Stevie's 17th studio album. He was 24 when it came out. He was absurd.

Stevie wonder never misses

Great album. Love the overall continuity of the album. Even the love song Please Don't Go has lovely upbeat tone, that turns into a raucous party at the end. Love Stevie's harmonica solo in it. However the stand out is They Won't Go When I Go. Very powerful, love the sparse arrangement.

was not at all familiar with anything off this album. loved all the variety-simple piano tracks, to some big funk sounds. really enjoyed listening

Lovely album, no misses found here. Love his ability to blend so many of the genres of his time into his own sound.

Fantastic. Stevie Wonder is a genius.

Absolutely great, I’ve never really listened to Stevie beyond the well known stuff and now I’m discovering it all.

Liked this more than I expected to

Wow, didn't know I love Stevie Wonder. Great album!

Funky, groovy, smooth, motown - or simply Stevie Wonder!

Stevie Wonder is at his best on this, the tongue-twistiest of his albums. There’s a wonderful balance between the slower, more soulful songs and groovy masterpieces like “Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away” with everything coming together on the harrowingly beautiful “They Won’t Go When I Go”.

One of his best albums.

Great album. This made me wanna listen to more Stevie Wonder music. Love it.

Have been an admirer of Stevie Wonder since he came on the seen. Enjoyed listening to this album and hearing both familiar and unfamiliar songs.

Yeah, this is pretty damn good.

Outstanding. Not one bad track.

Stevie's album run in the 1970s is one of the best of all time. And while the album being sandwiched between some of the best albums ever put on tape leads to it being a little underrated; it is still an amazing, unskippable soul record from one of the most talented musicians ever.

God this is just heavenly.

Stevie wonder can def see btw.

Funky jams. Great throughout

Never heard Stevie Wonder like this. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Love all Stevie Wonder music 🎶

He puts his varied sounds and talents on display here. You have the funk of Boogie On and You haven’t Done Nuthin. The Motown bleeding through on Please Don’t go. The beautiful Heaven and haunting They Won’t Go. The sleek Creepin’ sounds about a decade ahead of its time. It’s just an amazing album. One thing Stevie always does well, and is on display here, is building the track up bar to bar, verse to verse, minute by minute. I particularly love when his soft voice is leading and his growling voice is going crazy in the background on Heaven Is A Zillion Light Years Away. He’s a great producer in addition to being a world-class musician, performer, and vocalist!

Just wow. This was the album of his I was least familiar with from this era. Very thoughtful and shows true evolution. And still quite funky

I like this album best of all of his albums.

Some BANGERS! Boogie On Reggae Woman is such a zippy fun beat and is a new favorite. Overall it was uplifting and really was a great way to enjoy the end of a night of jazz lettuce.

This is the 2nd mid 70s Stevie Wonder record in a week. They’re so good! Loving the funk and soul.

Ok this album is literally a masterpiece. Most emotional artists use poetic devices and wordplay and fancy words (me included) but he uses the simplest least pretentious lyrics and theyre just PROFOUND. I didnt know if i would like it but im in love

Stevie could really do no wrong during this period. Every song is a banger. All killer no filler. He not only did funk, but he had a specific brand of funk that only HE could do. Easy 5 stars.

Sexy. Soulful. Stevie. How can it be anything other than a 5? I really like his way of weaving in a surprising chord progression; I feel like none of the songs are predictable which keeps my ears glued. Loved it and will be returning!

Loooove it

Wonderful. A but too conceptual/70s jazz to be my favorite. But it’s undeniably beautifully crafted.

All time favorite

Thoroughly enjoyable album front to back, pleasantly surprised

Really smooth and good. I've obviously heard of Stevie Wonder before, but never listened to a whole album straight through. Loved every track, would listen to again.

Predictably brilliant

Always wanted to listen to this one. Comes between Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life, but I didn’t recognize anything from it. The singles, Boogie on Reggae Woman and You Haven’t Done Nothin’…amazing. Stevie really couldn’t put a note out of place in the 1970s. Ballads, boogie woogie piano, catchy pop tracks - all of it.

A swell listen. Really nice on the ears.

I love it from the start, lots of emotion and I like all the songs

Nice and groovy. Last song is really good, middle was background music, didn't listen to it all because still working

Fun fact : before my daughter was born, before we even knew she would be assigned female at birth, my significant other and I used to call her "Stevie". That's how much I love the man.

Chill, easy listening

This was his 17th studio album and it still sounds this good? Stevie Wonder was unstoppable

Truly astounding that a lower rated album in Stevie Wonder’s catalogue can totally eclipse most other artists’ best albums.

Sonzeira, grande mestre

I am not going to complain about another Stevie Wonder album, especially from this era. I really dig his funkier jams, but those smooth and chill grooves just cuddle me like a snuggly blanket. They all make me feel so good!

Though I might've preferred if the ratio of down-tempo to upbeat songs were reversed, the whole thing made me feel great today and buoyed my spirits on a boring errand on public transit. Yay, Stevie!

With this album this project has exposed me to all of Stevie Wonder’s album releases from October 1972-1976. The albums definitely feel different but all are great. When I read this was more somber I wondered if I would like it as well, but it turns out I do. Really terrific!

A little bit moody compared to some of the more upbeat or jubilant releases from Stevie’s classic period, but still a classic nonetheless. Hadn’t dug into this one as much as some others, but as with most of his output there are always surprises and great moments around every corner. Boogie On Reggae Woman has always been a favorite, but Smile More, Creepin, You Haven’t Done Nothin are all excellent too. It turns a little preachy/religious at points, which I didn’t enjoy, so I’d probably knock half a star off and say this is 4.5, but still so good.

I really liked it, first time really delving into Stevie.

So much soul in one album

This is simply divine Stevie best of the best my favourite album.

Amazing album!

loved it!

Fufillingness Great Stevie Wonder album. Favorite songs: Boogie on reggae woman -all Stevie! You haven’t done nothing Birds of Beauty Too shy to say (love the pedal steel on this) 5

wasn’t really familiar with this album beyond reggae woman (such a great song) Cool instrumentation, this has got to be the only record with a pedal steel and a cuica. Brilliant songwriting/harmony as always Cool changes on they won’t go and I love the panned vocal interludes Haven’t done nothing is classic stevie So is the harmonica solo on please don’t go (that song is a real bop)

I was surprised but I got kinda bored with this. I dislike his tone but his control is incredible. I like when people sing like they are an instrument. Overall, still a masterpiece.

"Heaven is 10 Zillion Light Years Away" is great, sounds just as good as many tracks in *Songs in The Key Of Life*. Christ, three tracks in and I forget that a lot of modern love song standards were made by Stevie ("Too Shy to Say" is definitely a radio and cover staple, and I didn't realize that it was his). Brilliant album.

mmmm good shiet

As of today, I have a favourite Stevie Wonder album. This is the fourth and final one on this list and number 4 of 5 during Wonder's 1972-76 classic period. Talking Book is good, Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life are great, but this is perfection. A mix of tempos, themes and styles, but every track is a beautifully crafted work of genius and the record is perfectly sequenced with the changes of pace coming at just the right times. An underrated masterpiece. Rating: 5/5 Playlist track: Boogie On Reggae Woman Date listened: 24/05/23

Oh, a Stevie Wonder album released between '71 and '76? Easy answer: certified classic.

W did not get all the way through because the boy I might have maybe not likely but most probably fell in love with invited the girl he likes to his church and although that may not mean a lot it means a lot to me because just about 7 months ago he did the same thing to me. I am a witness of my own replacement. So, now I am going to go listen to boygenius lol live love laugh I love this so much.

So here we have one of Stevie's great but not stratospherically good albums. Feels odd to damn a record like this with faint praise but when an artist creates three of the greatest albums of all time that's the burden on their other work. In the 'Stevie's other work' canon, this is maybe my joint second favourite with Hotter Than July, but there's something about Music of My Mind (absent here, oddly) which places it above them. This is still really good, you may argue he was starting to run out of songs but in two years there's a double album called Songs in the Key of Life, so....nope. And honestly such thoughts are further dismissed as ridiculous once the album gets going, as after a few slightly less than stellar early tracks (excl. Smile Please) we are back to pure gold. So many low key classics here that reward repeat listening.

9/10. FFF

Stevie got pretty gospel on this album and I just ate it up. Legitimately one of the most talented musicians ever. 9/10

Understated and underrated album from Stevie’s classic period of 72’ to 76’ where everything he touched turned to gold. Wedged in between ‘Innervisions’ and ‘Songs In The Key Of Life’, ‘Fulfillingness' First Finale’ is generally downbeat and often plaintive and pensive compared to the two bookends, but no less excellent, and perhaps the record from his golden period that rewards repeated listening the most.

Great album, birds of prey and boogie on reggae woman

Oh how I love me some Stevie

Stevie!

Of Stevie's 5 "Golden Age" albums (Music of My Mind through Songs in the Key of Life), this is probably my least favorite, and still is a no-doubt 5 star album. Just a credit to how incredibly gifted a musician and songwriter Stevie Wonder is, and how high he flew in the 70s.

I LOVE me some Stevie

Sublime recording from an artist on an incredible run of ground breaking, popular and critically acclaimed albums. Curiously that no tracks became hits but nevertheless makes for a cohesive and satisfying album with complex but beautiful arrangements. Creepin’ which features Minnie Riperton is a particular highlight. An enduring, powerful and delightful album.

Discazo de Stevie Wonder donde habitan todas sus características esenciales, desde el Moog en bajo y percusiones hasta el funk espacial. Con colaboradores excelsos. Fantástico.

love Stevie Wonder and this album is really funky

Am I being too generous with my 5 star ratings lately? Maybe. But this is Stevie Freaking Wonder. When he sings "smile please", I actually want to smile.

This list has really given me an appreciation for just how excellent a run of albums Stevie had. Stupendous shit once again.

Really solid, and shows that Stevie really has a signature sound across his discography.

Pretty fucking great.

A wonderful listen. Although there aren't any of Wonder's better known 'hits' on this album, it just shows the depth of ability.

This is Stevie Wonder’s third album in his classic 4 album masterpiece run where he could do no wrong. FFF is my favorite of the four. I’m not sure why this album didn’t do as well as the albums that came before and after. The songs have some great melodies and the track flow on here sends the listener through a wide range of emotions on each side (or every 5 tracks for you digital listeners). Just listen to that segue from “Too Shy to Say” into “Boogie on Reggae Woman.” I didn’t look it up but “You Haven’t Done Nothin’” feels like it’s directed towards Nixon, who resigned around the time of the album’s release. “They Won’t Go When I Go” sounds like it might be the most personal song on here with its Baroque style piano and funeral dirge-like chord progression. The album popped on my feed a few days ago but this review took so long because I couldn’t stop listening to it. Here’s to another easy 5 stars.

Awesome example of Stevie’s Classic period. Made me incredibly excited to listen to other albums from that period.

Part of Wonder's "classic period", and all five albums released during that period live up to their reputation. This might be one of the less notable releases of that time, and it still has absolute anthems like "They Won't Go When I Go", and funky little numbers like "It Ain't No Use". Always a fantastic listen.

It's not Stevie's greatest album, but it's still amazing. I was hovering over giving it a 4, but They Won't Go When I Go tips this into yet another masterpiece.

Muy divertido este disco. Relajante, divertido, bailable. Stevie Wonder es un excelente cantante. Me encantó.

Primero al que le doy 5 ☆ Es suave, sencillo, emotivo y tiene ritmo siendo conciso y justo en su cantidad de tracklist

I love Stevie Wonder but I don't know this record, even though it's in his imperial period. It's a gem, quite understated and beautiful. I know best track, You Haven't Done Nothing, though, obvs

The synth work and sounds are stellar. Stevie is working the arrangements hard.

Lovely album. Damn-near divine.

amazing soul record. stevie is able to balance funky and upbeat tracks with blissful and quaint ones. fav tracks: smile please, heaven is 10 zillion light years away, too shy to say, boogie on reggae women, you haven’t done nothin, they won’t go when i go, bird of beauty,

Never disappoints

I don't know Stevie Wonder had a so called 'golden period' I just thought he was a genius throughout his life. But Boogie on Reggae Woman is a real and endless genius of a song within a fabulous album

This is Stevie Goddamn Wonder. Of course it's five stars. The man is a musician beyond musicians. Innovative, talented.

frank ocean and exo's precursor

очень очень приятненько

100% awesome

Very funky, fantastic voice. A bit too chill and soft for my taste, though.

Fantastic, perhaps perfect. Stevie is such a treasure, I love pretty much all of his work, and this is no exception. Absolutely wonderful

Incredible music. On a full Stevie binge now.

I haven't heard this one but I do like Stevie so happy to check it out. Starts lovely and pretty calm. Gets going with You Haven't Done Nothin', which is the kind of Stevie Wonder I like best. They Won't Go When I Go is quite powerful. Overall a really interesting album with lots to like. Grew on me the more I listened. Initially a 4 but a 5 by the end of the day.

Sublime!

Rating: 10/10

ALTO DISCO PARA ESCUCHAR MIENTRAS SE TRABAJA EN LA COMPU

Feel good album, soul/funk, outdoor party

You know, Songs in the Key of Life and Innervisions get more attention than Fulfillingness' First Finale, but this really is a splendid album. It's got everything you love in a Stevie Wonder album. It's warm, soulful, sweet, musically diverse, gorgeously arranged, and technically pretty perfect. It's also so much fun to listen to. This one is going into my regular rotation. I absolutely love it. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away, They Won't Go When I Go, Boogie On Reggae Woman, You Haven't Done Nothin', Please Don't Go, Too Shy to Say, It Ain't No Use, Bird of Beauty, Smile Please, Creepin'

❤️

Awww yeah!

Stevie Wonder is one of the towering giants of music in any period. His run of albums in the 70s defies belief. One of my all-time favourite songs, They Won't Go When I Go, is on this album. Stunning musicianship, perfect vocals, groove for days, watertight arrangements. It's all here.

Music of my mind - talking book - innervisions - this album - song in the KoL: should all be on this list.

Slightly prefer predecessors Talking Book and Innervisions, which I felt had a bit more energy to them, but this was still a very good album.

Stevie can do no wrong in this household, son. Listen to your mother. Do your chores.

Brilliant album. While no hits, this album's whole sound is amazing.

Lots of great songs here that were brand new to me!

This is one of the most beautiful albums ever made. As one of my dad's favourite albums I've heard it many many times. I can't put my finger on it, but somehow it hits my emotions quite badly and therefore I find it hard to listen to this album frequently.

Whew, that was a ride! Is it as good as Songs in the Key of Life? No. But is it an excellent album? Absolutely yes. Not to mention, it's better than approximately 95% of albums I've listened to so far on this list. And for that, it gets 5 stars.

It's Steve Wonder! He's 5 star himself!

Awesomeness

Fantastic record

Loved this album - only heard Inner Visions from this period

Feel good Stevie Wonder!

Pretty phenomenal. Catchy and beautiful instrumentals and incredible vocals + lyrics, not much more I could ask for. 9/10

Musicas para atender pacientes em processo psicoterapeutico. Som ambiente! Adorei

another great work!

En given klassiker. Det är starkt det är coolt.

Uživala san

Glas, atmosfera, emocije, instrumenti… jako mi se se svidjelo

One of his classics

I believe this is the only album in stevie’s classic period of albums that I haven’t heard! Glad to finally add it to the list of growing albums I’ve heard before I kick the bucket :)!

Very very good

Schön funkig, macht Spaß.

Really great album. Not super familiar with Stevie.

Awesome

solid, and a good WFH mood

Proof that albums with positive messages can sound good, too

introducted me to stevie wonder, i like soul music which i think this is but i like sade and marvin gaye's music more than stevie's wonder music. it really good but it doesnt hit for me unfortnatly

I like Stevie Wonder, but of course even he doesn’t have an endless number of albums that are true classics. In my opinion, “Fulfillingness’ First Finale” is quite clearly the weakest of the four Stevie Wonder albums listed here, and I probably wouldn’t have included it in this list. That’s not to say it’s bad by any means, but it just doesn’t have those standout moments like, for example, “Superstition.” For me, it’s a very clear four stars.

I like the sound enough to give it a 4 but the tunes don't stick in my head like they might in other stevie wonder albums, good though

It's Stevie Wonder. It's fantastic. What did you expect.

Really solid album, not sure why this Stevie album isn't up there with his others in terms of fame and reputation. Maybe its a bit more of the same but still very good start to finish

First impression! All the songs are catchy. Fave songs! "Bird of Beauty" "Creepin" "Boogie on Reggae Woman" "Heaven is 10 Zillion Light-years Away"

Getting more into stevie wonder and he truly is a master at music. Loved it super chill and funky atthe same time.

Super Sommeralbum. Groovy und abwechslungsreich. Ich würde es mir auf dem Balkon anhören. Vor allem die letzten drei Songs haben mir gut gefallen. 👍🏻

You really can't go wrong with Stevie. Such a great album. Has some funk, R&B, and soul. Album just flowed well as well.

Sandwiched between two of Stevie's strongest albums, this record offers a docket of slightly down tempo, easy listening tracks. There's some lyrics to chew on here and there, but overall the album doesn't stand out as much as some of his other entries. That being said, this still has a lot of great cuts, and any fan should take the time to listen. Stevie's worst album is better than some artist's discographies, and this is nowhere near the bottom.

Muy bueno. Me sorprendio mucho, muy versatil y divertido. No creo que llegue a las 4 (seria mas un 3.5) pero queria destacarlo.

first time listening to stevie wonder, i enjoyed listening to this album

Stevie Wonder's classic period might be the best run in all of music. This album is less good than the rest of them, but it's still damn near perfect.

Not Stevie's best album, but he just cant miss. A true song writing genius.

Really cool album. Quintessential Stevie Wonder, yet I don't think I had heard any of these before. Enjoyed the album a lot. Strong messages within the songs, and with historical context it gives it a lot of power. 4/5

Sure, it’s Stevie Wonder, so it’s going to be good stuff. But, not as good as the other albums on the list.

two stars each for Reggae Woman and You Haven't Done Nothing.

It’s Stevie wonders weakest album on the books, and out of the 7 I’ve heard in prior. Though being said, he still has such incredible sauce just making interesting and groovy stuff.

It may not be its best work, but to the standards that he puts up, but because it's Stevie Wonder, it's brilliant. It reminds me of his work on Music On My Mind, without the standout single "Superwoman", where there are some great tracks, but the rest feel a bit ordinary. Alas, Stevie Wonder still delivers a beautiful, funky album with great tracks, including Boogie On Reggae Woman and especially Creepin' and It Ain't No Use. I'm very excited to listen to Talking Book and Songs In The Key Of Life as someone who is very fond of Innervisions.

He’s very good as usual. Probably not his best album but still very pleasant to listen to.

I’ve never listened to this much Stevie wonder in my life, and honestly I’m so glad to hear more of him. His music is just sooo smooth. Just fills you up with joy, and makes you appreciate all around you.

It's Stevie man. Even his lesser known albums are great.

No. 216 Some greats hits on this album. Love the harmonica!

Loveley

sepsoso

Probably the weakest of the classic 5, but it’s still untouchable stuff. Stevie is always welcome, and this album has lots of funky fun moments.

Classic

This is good but not quite as mind-blowing as his other records on here.

Oh cool it's Stevie Wonder! Many people commonly know him from the song 'I Just Called to Say I Love You' (including me honestly), but this album does shows his song were much more than just love ballads. His soulful voice and songwriting really shines in this album. There are fun songs and there are songs with deep meanings, which kind of lacks in today's music (not all of them but some pop musics were a little too simple in terms of meaning). This is a great start for those who wants to deep dive in soul/funk music.

This album is good but not as good as songs in the key of life

Great piano, and some fun songs

Moins embarqué que innervisions et songs in the key of life. Peut-être parce que je connaissais moins les tubes. Mais du Wonder, c'est toujours smooth.

Stevie Wonder’s career and contributions to contemporary music are unparalleled. He is truly an American treasure. Don’t sleep on this album, which many consider to be made during a high-water-mark period of his career.

I mean it's Stevie Wonder, obviously it's gonna be good. Definitely not as much a slam dunk as Songs in the Key of Life, but that's an unfair comparison for ANY album.

Was not buying it on first listen, but realized I was expecting it to be Songs in the Key of Life, which it isn't. What it is is a smooth, fresh journey through Stevie Wonder's beautiful mind.

me gusto más este que songs in the key of life

quite wonderful, this album just oozes soul

good album stevie wonder has never dropped a bad album 8/10

I like Stevie wonder, but this album is one of his weaker ones. It’s alright, but not a masterpiece.

Расслабленная музыка, но где-то и с неожиданными звуками и с драматизмом.

Legendary soul

Always a banger 🔥

Delightful

Really enjoyed some of the tracks on here, especially Boogie on Reggae

A bit aged by some of the production tools used at the time. Still an enjoyable, easy listen.

If there are bad stevie albums, I haven't found them yet

Primera vez que lo escucho!!!

Really good vibes and flow, perfect for slow activity, relaxing.

Really love the album cover. Nice sounding album. No bonafide bangers in here but that’s ok. Pleasantly enjoyed the listen. None going in my playlist though. Specific rating - 4.3 Fav song - boogie on reggae woman Least fav- they won’t go when I go

It’s Stevie. Not my favorite album of his, but still great.

i literally just listened to this yesterday. it was good. it was stevie wonder.

Light on singles, but like a warm blanket. His chord progressions, his crooning, his distinctive drum swing. It's a beautiful thing.

I like it when he glorps it

actually a solid like 8/10 album they won't go when i go is a 10/10 song

Another album I probably won’t return to often, but I’m glad I listened to and that it exists. It has really amazing songs and breadth of writing here. And it feels important. My second review/album and I’m not sure how I will be rating things. I feel like it’s higher than Let It Bleed, that I have a 3. If I’m reviewing based on if I will listen to again, it’s got to be a three as well. I think I should’ve given LIB a four and will give this a four, based on enjoying and appreciating, but not going to be in regular rotation or a strong connection to.

Superb

heaven is 10 zillion light years away het en super "refrain" ich han chli angst, dass ich villes vom stevie wonder zwar schön, aber "zu ruhig" finde boogie on reggae woman isch sehr weird aber no cool hahaha jaa s isch wieder mega vill ah mier verbii leider they won't go when I go isch SOOO GUET WOW DIE ATMOSPHÄRE jaa ich chan wie wenig geg s album sege, ussert ebe dass es nöd megaa min stil isch? knapps 4i?

Очень круто, понравилось больше остальных альбомов Стиви, которые слышал, кроме Songs in the Key of Life

Muy chill

This was an enjoyable first listen that deserves going back to fully appreciate the craft. Highlights are Smile please, you haven't done nothin', and they won't go when I go.

10 zillion

Love it. Stevie was in prime form in the early 70s.

Pretty good

Stevie could do no wrong during his "3 album-of-the-year grammies in a row" period.

I never thought it would happen ... but after Queen's Sheer Heart Attack, I have had a consecutive week of 4 star albums! Now my average has reached above three stars. For awhile there I did not think that would ever happen. Another solid album with Stevie Wonder!

Favorite track(s): Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away, Boogie On Reggae Woman, Creepin', You Haven't Done Nothin', Bird of Beauty

not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue

un très sérieux 4 j'ai bien kiffé

pas son meilleur mais c'est du bon

Où trouve-t-il toute cette énergie ? Dernier album de Stevie Wonder de la liste c'est terrible

After the release of Innervisions, Stevie Wonder was in a very bad car crash that left him in a coma. After four days, he thankfully woke up again though he had lost his sense of smell and taste temporarily. Despite that, he would release Fulfullingness’ First Finale in 1974 and proceed to win Album of the Year at the Grammys for a third year in a row. He was only 24 at the time. What the fuck?

such a classic, surprisingly the first stevie album i got on vinyl. i love it so much, but in my opinion the albums surrounding it have higher highs, leading it to only be 4 stars instead of 5.

I really enjoyed it. I definitely get why its part of his "classic era".

4,15 1. "Smile Please" 2. "Boogie On Reggae Woman" 3. "You Haven't Done Nothin'"

i am convinced that stevie wonder is lying to us and is actually perfectly able to see. And to that i say chapeau! It takes courage and resilience to roll with a bit for so long

Favoritas: Boogie on reggae woman y Creepin'

blissful

Heaven is 10 zillion light years away is an amazing song Please don't go is the perfect outcome for this album because I truly did not want it to end.

It is hard to not like Stevie Wonder. There is one song on here that starts out with a synth riff and I fell in love.

I might just have this album in my collection… 4 stars 😁

Decent album

Liked You Haven’t Done Nothin. Prime tunes

Not my favorite of his, but it's not surprising to see it included with 3 other Stevie Wonder entries on this list. Very nice soul music with then-cutting edge synthesizers that Wonder became famous for incorporating into his songwriting. 8/10.

8.5/10 I can never get tired of Stevie Wonder's singing voice. Just a well-crafted soul album that delivers as expected.

Very soulful and funky all the way through, Fulfillingness' First Finale is just a super smooth listen. I loved “Too Shy to Say” really chill, one of those tracks that just stays with you. The whole album is easy to play front to back without skipping, it just flows naturally. Stevie Wonder’s vocals are insane as always, effortless but full of feeling. And the final track, “Please Don’t Go,” is such a perfect closer—soft, emotional, and it just leaves you in that mood.

Love this so much! Need to revisit before giving full thoughts

Sure I know some Stevie Wonder albums. And too be honest probably his more famous albums like "Talking Book", "Songs in the Key of Life" and "Hotter than July" to mention a few. But this one was new for me. And damn I really liked it. I know Stevie has a great voice. But wow in "They Won't Go When I Go" his voice is so outstanding. Honest I am I ain't the guy that loves "ballads" but he does it so good that I like them. 4/5

Funky relaxing yet energetic sound, hard to miss with Stevie Wonder.

What a breath of fresh air.

Love Stevie.
