Reviews (page 3 of 12)

loved it. who knew the English could have such a soulful singer.

An extremely enjoyable listen. Found myself singing along (badly) even if I did not know the words. Classic 60s music

what a delightful little album to clean my pallet.

Love her voice. You Don't Own Me is incredible.

Fav song: Wishin’ and Hopin’

Only ever listened to the singles but really enjoyed this as a whole

Great singer.

Super voix

will forever associate this album with freaking out about degree show

Lovely voice and catchy tunes.

Great album, variety of songs from a timeless age.

очень мило. именно с ней ассоциируется эта эпоха.

Quite surprising but I f w this a lot. Not my kind of jam but sounds like it stood the test of time to me.

Dusty Springfield is the sort of thing my mom would put on the radio when she would drag me around town on errands as a kid. It's just the kind of thing that speaks to me.

I love Dusty in Memphis, but I haven't listened to this one before. Full of familiar and great songs, though. This is exactly what I needed for my Monday morning.

Nice to take a walk to

Way better than I thought

It is always thrilling to discover an artist, specially one like Dusty, whose voice holds such emotion that gives me the goosebumps.

I'd never heard of Dusty Springfield but this was nice. Some very recognizable songs on here. Really lovely voice. I would listen again

This was a good listen. At times I heard what sounded like Adele and Amy Winehouse on a few tracks.

I have been underrating Dusty my whole life

Love this, very soulful

Have this record. Very good

The core experience I'm having with this project and one of the biggest things keeping me going on it is that I'll see an album like this, go "eugh am I about to hate this" and then I start it up and it's beautiful, and not only is it beautiful, it features a few songs that I heard on the radio when I was just a little boy and my parents had the oldies on, and I'm immediately transported back in time to the big blue van they used to drive me and my three big brothers around in (I was in the very back seat, crammed in the middle), and I feel this incredible warmth as well as physically experiencing the passage of time in a way that hurts a lot. Nice album.

Excellent blue eyed soul from a 60’s icon. For me, Dusty in Memphis has the edge but this is a great effort. 4

1 - Mama Said (instant throwback with the contemporary doo-wop sound. Springfield herself gives a great and soulful performance. Not too much else to say about this besides it being a fine opener and an excellent piece of doo-wop) 4/5 2 - You Don't Own Me (much moodier than the previous opener with some swanky piano backing it. This is almost film noir with how soulful and torch song-like the whole thing sounds, especially in Springfield's performance. Needless to say this is the high point of the album even if it comes very early on. Extra points for the final coda ascending in key) 4.5/5 3 - Do Re Mi (much more standard as an R&B track. There were many, many songs like this one released during this era, and this one isn't particularly exceptional barring Springfield's always intriguing vocal performance) 3/5 4 - When the Love Starts Shining Thru His Eyes (bouncy and upbeat right from the start, this one reminds me of a late-night dance at some upscale nightclub - very common as an image for these singers in this era. This has the early Motown sound; figures as it was originally recorded by the Supremes. Another strong performance on this album) 4/5 5 - My Colouring Book (dreamlike and sort of Disney-sounding in the intro. Relaxed and elegant, this one would play as the night is slowing down. Springfield's spirited performance aside, the low and slow moments are kind of Scott Walker to my ears) 4/5 6 - Mockingbird (the first half closes with another classic R&B song. Springfield sings these challenging leads to convincingly it's hard to argue against her positioning as one of the greatest singers of her era. For someone whose image has been "cleaned up" to make her seem like a simple balladeer, Springfield made a lot of daring choices, which you can hear on songs like these) 3.5/5 7 - Twenty-Four Hours from Tulsa (bluesier than anything we've heard so far, this is a fun enough romp with some genuine storytelling and a very pretty string section to compliment it. There isn't too much to say besides that this song, and the rest of the album is hard carried by Springfield, who soars head and shoulders over the material; a certain sign of her success to come) 3.5/5 8 - Nothing (despite this being another R&B song, Springfield's performance here is blues and gospel-influenced more than anything; this one is probably the most American song I've heard on this rather British album so far. This one genuinely goes hard and is the most toe-tapping track on this whole thing if you ask me) 4/5 9 - Anyone Who Had a Heart (another smoky ballad with some wonderful subtle strummed guitar and gently plinking piano to build an atmosphere(!) Quite a change from the straight-ahead fare of the rest of this album. The ascending key changes is just icing on the cake and pays off the buildup of the first half very effectively) 4/5 10 - Will You Love Me Tomorrow (more bombastic and - dare I say - theatrical than any other song on here. It's delightfully pleasant and very full. The only thing that really gives away this song's age is the backing vocal and the sort of dry production. This one was an instant favourite for me and another very obvious high point of the album) 4.5/5 11 - Wishin' and Hopin' (this one is slightly more subdued and Springfield has rather minimal backing for the first 90 seconds or so on this album; oddly enough, it's the most percussion-heavy song here. It's honestly a rather unusual song structurally despite the conventional verse-chorus framing) 3.5/5 12 - Don't You Know (the final song on the album is the most bombastic of them all, sounding like the real deal grand finale of this nightclub performance of an album. The main thing that sells this song for me is those horns slinging around and Springfield pushing the highs on her voice all throughout the instrumental break. This one really sounds like it was a hoot to record!) 4.5/5 OVERALL - 7.8/10

Some of these songs were ruined by their success combined with just the long history. They eventually get bought and sold and licensed and then I find out about them from commercials and parodies. Regardless I love Dusty Springfield's voice and thus enjoyed listening to this album.

My second Dusty album, and second time being pleasantly surprised. Firstly, there are more tracks I recognized in this than I was expecting. The fun one was "Mockingbird", which made me think of Dumb and Dumber. She has such a great voice and the accompanying music was interesting. I'd happily listen to this again. 4/5

“Mama Said” hit HARD after changing 2 poopy diapers and a full tantrum

Loved it

It’s soulful of course, but it’s that 60s pop soul with hints of big band and some swing. I may prefer the earthier soul with a more intimate production that she would move into, but it’s nitpicking really since the indisputable marvel that is her voice is still the same and the material here is shit-hot. She just didn’t make bad albums in the 60s.

Pretty good album. She sounds like the "Adele" of her day. I prefer the soulful songs over the girl-boppy songs, and there are enough great tracks for me to rate this album higher: You Don't Own Me, Twenty Four Hours from Tulsa, Anyone Who Had a Heart, All Cried Out, Summer is Over.

Not all equally good, but the singles (of wilhich there are quite a few) and stronger songs keep this album afloat.

Fantastic vocals that, even when you know it's a cover, are still so impressive and fun to listen to. A rare instance of listening to the extended cut on purpose.

Very fun old school country. They don’t make them like this anymore

feküdtem a mama ágyán koradélután, a fejemre sütött a nap, ezt hallgattam és félálomra szenderültem. irtóra szuper volt

I really loved this album, I only knew her music from her classic hits. Whereas I felt I was able to see and hear a side of her I was yet to understand. The range of her voice and true talents really shine in this album.

who hasn't covered "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" at this point?

My initial reaction was “I can’t believe this record is on the list.” But it turned out to be one of the most fun listens so far. Really great top to bottom.

Short and impacting songs Did not know this talented singer ! Swing, trumpets and lyrics : this album is a super surprise

Great good mood easy listening with some mediocre songs in the middle of the album. Check out “I only want to be with you” cover by Volbeat, too!

A great album! I really enjoyed this one + it was easy to see why this was an influential album. Very deserving to be on this list!

Dusty Springfield was easily one of the most engaging and versatile vocalists of the 60s, covering a huge variety of songs including blues, soul, ballads and show tunes. She effectively had two parallel careers with different songs hitting the charts in the USA and back home in the UK. The original version of this album was just under half an hour, but this remastered version more than doubles that, with some real gems included. My highlights are a delicious version of 24 Hours From Tulsa, Anyone Who Had a Heart and a very different take on Mockingbird. There’s guaranteed to be something on here that will appeal to just about everyone. Simply delightful.

Nice music from the 60th

Sonido de años sentimiento y nostalgia

great voice

Energetic, good tunes, light, "sunny". It was noticeably referred to later in music.

Exceptional vocals.

Solid classics but funny enough I know these form tiktok lol

Someone else said it first, but Dusty really was the Led Zeppelin of soul music.

Surprising great!

Pretty classic early 60’s soul. I prefer Dusty in Memphis but this is her big hits record. As I listen I found myself singing along because all these songs are buried in my head from listening to 1970s pop radio

Some of the arrangements and lyrical sentiments were a bit dated, but Dusty has a beautiful voice and some of the melodies are very catchy. You can see why she was the it-girl of her time.

Old country during its peak. You can’t beat the sound of women country artists back in the day. Not perfect but a job well done.

phenomenal voice, classics

Belter of an album. Didn't realise she'd sang so many of these songs. Thoroughly enjoyed this, and brought back some good memories of listening to some of these with my Nan.

Springfield's voice is very soulful, and perfectly suited to these pop standards from the 60's. Some of the songs are a little flat and don't take full advantage of her vocal talent, but overall, this is a good album of classic Motown inspired pop.

Great debut album. You can hear so many singers from this point onwards that have clearly taken this album as massive inspiration. Cool album.

The kind of album that makes you say: "amo la vida". Fua!!!!!!!! Gran descubrimiento.

This is such a great collection of songs, and I really dig Dusty's voice and delivery. Would listen to this anytime.

The master of 60s pop. Dusty’s sound is so iconic. And fun to boot.

Dusty Springfield - A Girl Named Dusty - 4/5 I’m a fan of the 60s so this one was just a really good time. There are a bunch of great 60s standards on here. “Mama Said,” “You Don’t Own Me,” “I Only Wanna Be With You” and “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” all helped carry it. It has that early 60s pop feel where one good song rolls right into another without much dead space. What’s crazy is I didn’t even realize she was from England until a couple years ago. Favorite song: “I Only Wanna Be With You”

Strong voice, fun attitude, good song choices. This album is pretty delightful.

- fun love songs :) - I like dis - she has a nice voice

Not quite the masterpiece of Dusty in Memphis, but still, an incredible record. She may not have written much herself, but she makes so many of them her own, and the definitive version. The production is heavily influenced by Motown and Phil Spector, and it works. John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin played on a bunch of these, too.

A collection of great classic pop songs, well performed with some powerful vocals. The fact that it's mostly a covers album until you get to the bonus tracks from the reissue makes it so I can't really justify a higher rating, but I thoroughly enjoyed this album. A few more interesting original compositions like Summer Is Over could've made this a real classic. Favourite tracks: Summer Is Over, You Don't Own Me, All Cried Out

I really enjoyed this album. So many of the songs were surprisingly familiar to me, with very fond places in my heart. I love "Mama Said" and "You Don't Own Me" to kick of the album with a bang. Dusty's voice and ability to emote in her singing is phenomenal.

Good but Dusty In Memphis is so much better. If that album doesn’t show then I don’t think this list is legit.

Usually not a fan of all cover albums but this is an exception. Dusty had an amazing, powerful and soulful voice and this album must have sounded very fresh and modern at that time it was released (for comparison just listen to some other women around the time and how they sounded). She was as close as possible to US singers back in 1964. Great blue eyed soul / easy listening album that stood the test of time and influenced so many singers in the coming decades.

This had some great songs on it. It was enjoyable.

Lovely listen. I don’t think I had connected all these songs to the same artist. Thanks Dusty

I knew a surprising number of these songs but hadn’t known who they were by.

I do like a female voice.

A pleasant throwback to an era that I never lived through myself - "You Don't Own Me," "Do Re Mi," and "Wishin' and Hopin'" were highlights

Good stuff a lot more soul to it than what I expected from the album cover.

Great debut, even if it is a bunch of covers. It's a shame Dusty's largely forgotten these days.

Loved it. Packed with classics. Will definitely listen again.

Very good soul album, especially for the 60's.

I had very mixed feelings about this album. I am a big fan of the Motown sound, and this record absolutely has that. The problem is that it's not Motown. It's a British "knockoff" version. I wanted to do some reading about this before I wrote my review, as my initial thought without context was that this album, while very enjoyable to listen to, was total cultural appropriation. Her voice was soulful and fantastic, but also she sounded almost exactly as Motown singers would. Complete with the back-up singers and the instrumentation too. According to what I could find on-line, she was actually a champion of Motown and there was a sense that she opened the doors in UK to the black artists coming from America. She was apparently admired by some of the Motown acts, and was considered an honorary part of the Motown family. Which is all fine and good, but I'm still left with very mixed feelings looking at this from the lens of 2026. Without that lens, I'd have easily given this album four stars. With it, I'm still undecided.

She walked so Adele could run. Literally didn’t know will you still love me tomorrow was a cover until today 💀 Lots of surprise bangers on here

Excellent 60s pop music. Mama Said, I Only Want to Be With You, Nothing all bangers.

This is pretty good! It is a compilation of Dusty songs, so I'm not sure it's truly a seminal album or anything, but it's a good collection of solid examples of her work. I honestly just love this era of music too.

Moest ff wat achterstallig luisterwerk inhalen maar we're so back. Mooie sterke stem, zeer zeker genoten.

zo goed!

I have no idea if Dusty made these songs, but almost every song was well known or a hit

A great album from the 60’s with a good amount of classics.

Nice 60’s vibe, paar echte classics

very retro very 60's very nice

It's a compilation, so they were really able to curate this one; strong start, VERY GOOD ending. There are a lot of classic Dusty songs here.

Dusty had a great voice. She's always a pleasure to listen to.

It's admittedly old fashioned but girlie can saaangg

Virkelig skønt! Dejlig stemme, fede melodier, bare godt.

Première soirée sur le Vanuatu

Gotta love a queer icon with a killer voice

4. Un poco largo, con algunas canciones menos podría haber sido un cincazo.

Retro vibe was appreciated twas sick. Just found out this album is full of covers though, but still I like her spin on them.

Really surprised by how much I enjoyed this considering several of these tracks are ubiquitous iconic classics. I had almost overlooked what a phenomenal voice she had.

Adorable!

I have always thought Dusty is so cool, so listening to the album wasn’t much of a chore, I hadn’t realised how many classic songs were on it though! The production is rich and warm, clearly with loads of soul influence, at times it reminded me a bit of the 50/60s girl group type music. I felt that the instrumental layers were really well balanced in an effort to allow the vocals to remain the centrepiece of the album. The vocals are obviously incredible, dusty has this smokiness to her tone but it doesn’t sound theatrical, her delivery is always very grounded (and cool). I think the calm confidence in her voice is probably why I’ve always seen Dusty as such a classy artist, she’s just effortlessly impressive. The lyrics had a sort of conversational style to them which I liked. My favourite song in the album was you don’t own me, the message still feels modern, I love the defiance in the lyrics and the attitude that DS delivers them with. This is a great album, loads of the tracks feel timeless and hearing them all together/knowing they all come from the same album made me appreciate DS more as an artist.

After getting her live album, I was really looking forward to hearing more Dusty Springfield. I was not disappointed, this album was wonderful! Starts out with the very fun Mama Said. Her voice sounded really nice in You Don't Own Me, and it had some great music with a lovely string section. Do Re Mi and Mockingbird are really fun. Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa also showcases her voice nicely. Will You Love Me Tomorrow brings back the lovely strings. Don't You Know puts up some great saxophone music. I really love Dusty's voice. This album was full of fun upbeat numbers with the occasional slower jam, all of it was wonderful. Best song: You Don't Own Me

SI NO SUPISTE AMAR!!!! AHORA TE PUEDES MARCHAR!!! 8/10.

Loved it (maybe because it’s friday)

Not sure what I was expecting but it wasn’t this! Really great singing voice, really shows her capabilities of range and style. That being said, it sounds like many of these are covers and many of these covers seem to have better versions by other groups over the years. Doesn’t take away from this performance, but does distract from the listening experience. Overall solid 4/5

Already knew this album. Dusty was great.

Having "Nothing" after "24 hours from tulsa" is kind of hilarious.

Es bueno!!

I always forget how much I love Dusty Springfield. This album has some bangers but doesn't completely blow me away.

Even if it has all the 60's love song tropes, her talent and passionate performance is undeniable and infectious

a girl called kate who liked this album.

Great album, some interesting melodies and lyrics that keeps me curious

Glad I listen to it again because I found it way more enjoyable on this listen. Not really the target audience for this artist but still had lots of fun.

classic!

I love Dusty, so don’t get me wrong, but this looks like a compilation. I’m all for compilations; there should be so many more compilations on this damn list! So many problems would be solved. Anyway. Love Dusty.

Dusty Springfield is one of those artists I was introduced to at an early age but never really paid much attention to. She was just background music for a lot of my youth, and for me was massively outshone by Peggy Lee, Lulu, and Patsy Cline. Listening to her now, maybe I should have paid more attention back then. This is good stuff, and I feel like maybe I missed out on something by not listening to more Dusty. A good four out of five for this one.

Une fille appela poussiéreuse. Il y a des grosses tounes, c'est smooth et bien produit. J'aime sa voix. Ça fait assez cinématographique. Mais je suis un peu tanné du soul.

Dusty in Springfield était meilleur.

Bästa spår är You don't own me, Anyone who had a heart, Will you love me tomorrow, I only want to be with you.

C'mon folks lets get real here. Dusty's voice is incredible. She sings with so much soul. Backing music and vocals are fabulous, production is great - this is an album of gems. Just a great listen. This is great music.

So many hits! Aside from the 4 tracks I knew and liked (1,2,10,11) my faves were Nothing and Don’t You Know. Coloring Book was a real low point in the album.

2/12/26 - Listened during work. So many classics, its hard not to enjoy this one. Can't bring myself to go full 5 stars when most (all?) of these are covers but its an easy 4 star with a number of timeless classics. Best Song - Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (reminds me of Police Academy)

Good, but kind of long.

🤗👍🏻❣️🤔🙏🏻

Second dusty album is crazy but I liked the first one so let’s see abt this one. Mama said is a banger. It’s classic dusty. Great songwriting. And then followed by you don’t owe me wow. How did I never hear of dusty before this list. Absolute banger. I wish it was longer. Do re mi is really fun. Really catchy too. Love the horns. Through his eyes is good not great. Very well written but kind of forgettable. I like the horns. Good change of pace on colouring book. Great story telling too. Ahead of its time. Mockingbird is fine, not my favorite mockingbird song but not bad. Tulsa is forgettable. Nothing is another banger. Super catchy. Great production. Anyone who had a heart is so well written again. Love the harmonies on the chorus too. Background track is just OK. Will you love me is not like that, great background track. Good vocals/lyrics. Dusty was the og pop star. Wishing and hopin is another banger. No notes. Love the horn/piano solo on don’t you know. Rest of it is good not great. I only want to be with you is another all time classic. The songwriting is so good. Very catchy. It’s very 70s but holds up.hes got something is more of the same in a good way. Dont like every day I hav to cry as much but its still a good song. Can I get a witness is so good too. I like I wish I’d never loved you a lot. Great horns. Great lyrics as always with dusty. Once upon a time is another classic. It’s dated but a great song. Great closer in summer is over. Apt name. Really good song. I love this album. Where has dusty been all my life, 2 certified classic albums. 4.2 stars.

Interesting. At times it feels a bit boring, but some songs are quite cool, fresh and greatly produced. And she has a nice voice. However, it felt a bit too long. That's why I am not rating it higher. 3,75/5.

A wonderful album of 60s blue eyed soul. I think the version I listened to ran a bit long but the songs themselves are wonderful. Dusty is incredible.

Would have never listened to this - but I knew a lot of the songs. Was kinda fun!

Good album. Ranks up there with Dusty In Memphis

Great voice

This had me realllyyyyy confused about what were covers and what weren't. We all know my opinion about covers being on this list, but, I had a great time.

Wonderful voice

Day 169 Bizarrely, it took me up until today to realise Dusty Springfield was English, I always assumed she was American. Powerhouse voice, some excellent songs on here. Highlights Mama said You don’t own me Anyone who had a heart

I love this stuff.

This was a great album to listen to. There were a few true classics, but so many I hadn't heard before. What a great voice and musicianship behind it. Not what I'd normally reach for, but I would happily go back again to listen to this one.

Surprisingly good!

Wouw.. fantastic voice. And then the hits. Northern soul classic

What a voice! The influence on female vocalists that follow is very clear. There are a few weaker tracks, but on the whole this is a great album that I want to listen to again. A 4.

I wish I could have heard her sing live.

Yeah, I enjoyed this. Very much of its era, and I’m sure there are better versions of many of these tunes, but Dusty had a voice for sure. I get Amy Winehouse a bit more as a result of listening to this. The slower numbers drag a little, and the orchestration isn’t really my thing, but it’s a product of its time. As are the rather jarring backing vocals on the opening track. But overall it’s OK. And the perfect length to listen to twice on my commute.

What a great album. Dusty sounds amazing and she picked a perfect set of songs for her voice. Very hip and mod for 1964.

I fuck with Dusty at an alarmingly high level. I get she's jangly and chorusy, STRAIGHT out of the 60s, but the songs are actually weirdly really fun to listen to. Classics like Wishin and Hopin, I Only Want To Be With You an absolute STAPLE of a song. Yeah I liked this a lot more than I expected 7.5/10

Production that sounds very typical of the time, not objectionable but nothing special, but Dusty's voice is just incredible. She lifts 24 hours from Tulsa into stratospheric levels, Anyone who had a heart is amazing - I only knew it from Cilla's version which is horrific. She really is special, even singing songs that are so familiar.

Swinging’ 60s. Good stuff. A lot of what are considered standards today.

I only knew Dusty Springfield from her hits, never had any of her albums. This one is basically a covers record except it includes her hits. I really enjoyed it. She has a very good voice with decent range. This is 60s pop at its best.

Love her voice

Very glad to connect a few song to a name I criminally mainly just knew as a name previously (You Don’t Own Me has insanely always made me think of Jonathan LaPaglia due to the aggressive ad campaigns of channel 10’s 2014 Australian drama Love Child). Particularly loved the back end of the album, some incredible break up songs, I Wish I’d Never Loved You, with stirring strings and horns was beautifully moody. Summer Is Over was a great triumphant closer, and was sad when it was over.

It’s funny, I almost find it harder to provide meaningful insight to albums I already know and love, and I know and love A Girl Called Dusty!! Just makes me want to rewatch Mad Men (again)

Once again, something that I’ve enjoyed quite a bit more than expected. Those opening two songs are great and it’s lovely just listening to her voice. In saying that, while I thought the album was good, it’s not really something I could see myself choosing to listen to. Go listen to What Have I Done To Deserve This? by Dusty and the Pet Shop Boys

I think Dusty has better collections of songs as overall projects, particularly as some of these songs fall into the space of overt corniness that has not aged that well. You can hear the influence of Phil Spector all over this, which is a good thing. She does these pop songs very well, and is particularly adept at interpreting Bacharach. Nobody can really do a bad version of ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow’, but I can’t say that Dusty’s is my favourite. She lacks the restraint of the original.

So many hits

Way more hits than I expected. There were a handful of absolutely killer songs tbh. I think those get it the 4 even if I'll never come back to good chunks of it.

Honestly very very nice album. I love music like this

A great album to listen to in the background. An undeniable voice.

Definitely not the sound I expected from a British pop artist She’s got a pretty good voice, though idk if the soul sound really suits her very well (even though I’m usually quite a fan). I’m pretty sure every song on here’s a cover so I do think it’d be cool to hear more of her original music. Either way was a fine enough listen, there’s some fun ones on there. Was nice to dip back into the 60s

Released in UK in 1964, original album much different than the subsequent US version we are reviewing. Really only knew her from Son of a Preacher Man, which was included in Pulp Fiction. For those who haven't seen it, the Mia Wallace sequence from Pulp Fiction is absolutely brilliant. Probably the earliest "blue eyed soul" singers. Thought about Amy Winehouse a lot while listening. Great versions of 50s and Motown standards, and yes even country (24 Hours From Tulsa). Strong vocal and good backing, this was way better than I'd expected. Recorded in the same studio Elvis recorded From Memphis in. Strings and horns worked here, however. Can't go three stars because it was better than mid, probably 3 1/2 but halves not an option. Going 4 stars for the pleasant surprise.

Pretty good. A lot of covers

This was fun, it's just classic tunes, not too much that's really mindblowing, but they're enjoyable to listen to. Had a few "Wait, Dusty wrote that?" moments listening through it.

Gostei

ojalá la gente siguiera haciendo música así, me encanta.

Favourite song: You Don't Own Me A fun listen, very catchy songs. In general not something I would normally listen to but enjoyed the album.

not my vibe but iconic

Full of bangers. I had no idea DS did so many songs that I know. Really enjoyed this.

Classic album..

Loved this album! Full of great Motown songs from my childhood. I remember listening to so many of these on the oldies station with my folks while I was growing up. Highlights: "Mama Said", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" and "Can I Get A Witness"

Fun to listen to, made me feel like I was in a TV show set in the 60s

An interesting inclusion. Very familiar with her works. This album is a great compilation album. It is the sort of album that feeds playlists (or mix tapes!) Nice to hear these songs (and her versions) again. A solid 4 for listen-ability.

I liked this album, especially “Summer is Over”

Would we call "Blue-Eyed Soul" cultural appropriation in the 21st Century? Maybe. The covers that I know elsewhere give me a modern cringe, but the rest of it is really good. Dusty has an amazing voice.

Soulful, lots of familiar tunes. I'd never heard of her, but her influence on the culture of the 60s and 70s is remarkable. Will likely revisit this one.

20 songs•55 min Starts screaming with Mama Said and moves into You Don’t Own Me. Do Re Mi is a fun little trifle. Dusty the UK’s R&B torch. The album features a full orchestra with horns as she belts out the heart break, the angst of growing up or the never being able to go home again. Beautiful voice and the album. All the songs blend into one maxi early sixties rhythm and blues background. 4/5

On every antique store playlist.

Loved it. So many great songs. Definitely will be relistening to. So many songs I didn't know were hers!

9/10 great listening

she’s an icon what a time

Finding out how much I enjoy Dusty Springfield has been one of the great joys of the generator for me thus far!

Enjoyed this

Huge pop hits from mid-60s

Recognized a lot more than I thought I would. Fantastic album. Really timeless and feel good vibe.

this rockedddd!!

This is a solid album with several great songs. I like a lot of her music, but she does have a very distinct sound. A little bit goes a long way.

Dusty had some great hits from this album.

Great if a little long

I think a lot of us have Tarantino to thank for keeping Son of a Preacher Man alive, which was the only song I knew to associate with Dusty before listening to this. That's not on this project, so I wasn't expecting to know so many of these songs. They're really just soul/Motown standards of the era, and a lot of them still get recognition today. Dusty's voice has the body for this kind of music, she damn near grazes the line between blue-eyed-soul and the good stuff that turns your stank face on. It's enough to overlook the mistakes from the original release, and the length of the very neat rerelease 33 years later. 3.9/5

It's full of covers, which was the standard way to go for a pop album for a long time. Dusty Springfield delivers them soulfully with her great and clear voice. I don't think it's quite as good as some of her later albums and it's a bit of a weird one to pick, but it does show off this era of pop really well. Full of classic songs, good voice, strings and band in the background. Bonus points for the bonus track Summer is Over.

One of those classic albums I started this project for. This is sassy and fun.

Pretty hard to find anything to dislike in this album. Megahit after megahit belted by a standout voice, foreshadowing Adele.

I really liked this album. Lots of songs I liked, and her singing was really good. Definitely would listen to this again. 3.75/5

Lovely. Dusty has such a soulful, charming voice, with a character missing from so many singers both then and now, and some of these songs are amongvthe best ever written. 24 hours from Tulsa, Anyone who had a heart, Mama said, Will you live me tomorrow... the original 12 track album is joyous. That said, I have to knock off a mark for 'Wishin' and Hopin', which is a song I utterly despise. 4 seems fair.

Mama Said - very reminiscent of the melody and music of the era. You don't own me is iconic. Do re me - nice sax or trumpet work, catchy vocals and pitch down. 4th track, I'm not sure the backing vocals really do anything here, nice breakdown with piano. My coloring book, interesting reverberation on the vocals, backing strings really help lift the vocals. Mockingbird - the classic featured in Dumb and Dumber haha...

Прикольная хуйня, хотя поначалу казалось что очередной спанчбоб-кантри

I love Dusty 💛

What a lovely little album.

Better than "From Dusty in Memphis", IMO. Some classics here, for sure.

This was very good. The backing band was excellent and that really made the whole album a great listen.

Fun album!

Some bangers on this one

Dusty and Dusky vocals. A real treat.

An album of 60's pop songs, some brilliant and many familiar. Unmistakable voice, probably inspiring many of the modern day singers: Amy, Adele, Raye.

Really enjoyed listening to this album, love dusty, i d put it on repeat to keep me company in the bus, lifted my spirit.

Classic

Dusty Springfield could sing the phone book and I'd stop whatever I was doing and listen.

That's some classic R&B, right there.

This was a fun spin. It was one I approached with some indifference, but once it started I tumbled all in.

great album. a lot of samples were taken from this for good reason.

Another one of those albums full of songs you knew but didn't realize they all came from the same album. Coming right out the gate with a debut album like this explains why Dusty is such an icon. You don't get an Adele or Amy Winehouse without Dusty Springfield and this album makes it very clear why. There's plenty of love songs in here, but trust me, there's just as much girl power as well. It's not all doting for the perfect man. Dusty also knows when to put her foot down and demand more from her man. She knows her worth and is unwilling to give love to those that don't meet her standards. She sets the bar for her relationships and with a voice and charm like hers, you better reach for it. There are tracks dancing along with a twinkling percussion that brings out a soft and sweet side of her voice. But when a song like Nothing comes along and the brass section rises, she absolutely roars. There's a bravery and violence to her voice when the tension bursts and the passion explodes. Don't judge her by her glamour. Dusty Springfield is a badass. 4.5 Stars

I like it! Very 60s!

I love Dusty — what a voice, and what an icon. I was really looking forward to giving A Girl Called Dusty a listen today. I have to admit, I’m not entirely sure how an album made up mostly of covers makes this list, but then again, when every song Dusty touches sounds this good, it’s easy to see why. Her voice is outstanding throughout, and the sound and production are excellent for the time. Her versions of Mama Said and You Don’t Own Me are particularly strong and full of character. Favourite track: Anyone Who Had a Heart is beautiful, and Mama Said is a classic. Least favourite track: Every track is worth a listen — all sung and performed brilliantly. Album artwork: Double denim! A cool and confident cover that suits Dusty perfectly.

i have a similar problem with this album that i did with the willie nelson stardust album; none of the songs are hers. she has a great voice and did a good job with these songs but i wish there was some original material here. its a fun album that id happily listen to again but i cant give it a 5.

My cat is named Dusty! My sweet little boy made some really classic girl group songs here!

- Hat mir überraschend gut gefallen - Die Extrnded Version ist mir etwas zu lange, weil es am Ende doch alles recht ähnlich klingt - Aber ich denke ein paar Lieder würde ich auf jeden Fall nochmal hören Topsong: You Don’t own me

4 of these 12 tracks are still popular/classic songs that everyone still knows in 2025. Precursor to Adele (and other modern singers of that same vein).

I have a soft spot for 60s pop music. I love the eery and spacious instrumentation combined with her sweet vocals. Just lovely. 7/10

Some 60s pop from the start of the underrated Dusty Springfields long career. It’s always interesting to see where artist come from (listen to David bowies first album for a trip) but this is just a shining example of her great voice and how Motown and soul influenced her first pop outing Mama said and you don’t Own me are so full of thst sort of doo-wop pop that she excelled at, and the nearly sinister towns of don’t own me give it’s a much of an edge as you can for a 60s girl pop hit While do re mi was kind of so-so for me, “when the love light” was an excellent jolt of show time energy., with “coloring book” slow jamming is back down with a gorgeous instrumental track while 24 hours to Tulsa I’ve listened to st least a dozen times Ultimately, while this album is full of covers (which was the style at the time for new musicians on the scene) I’m still in awe of the groundwork Dusty has left and would recommend the album for sure

I loved this album. My mom growing up would listen to and sing this era of music all the time and my sister loved musicals and music from this era. Dusty is not the original singer on more than a few of these songs but she has the perfect voice to sing them. Particular standouts are You Don't Own Me which is a classic (not originally sung by Dusty) that she nailed the high notes and frustrated tone that the song really requires to be conveyed. Mockingbird (again covered by Dusty) is a nostalgic favorite of mine, on long road trips when this would come on my mom would sing the main part and my sister and I would sing the response part. This type of music really does have a particular vibe to it that I cannot place but adore. Dusty is a singer I had never heard of before but she definitely had tremendous talent. I'm going to dock this some points (just like I did the Isley Brothers) for the covers but at the end of the day it's an album I would listen to again in a heartbeat. 4 out of 5 long trips down memory lane.

Some pretty good blue-eyed soul! This is not amazing, and there a good number of misses, but there are also some great tracks in here. It is mostly a soul album. Dusty is a great singer, so it stands up next to Motown and other girl acts from the time. Overall, a good listen.

Yuparooni

Dulcet tones from a golden age of pop, sprinkled with Motown. Big Chill vibes

Good listening. My wife likes this album. Weird how she has 3 albums from 64 with different things on them.

Unbelievable how many hits on this album. Loses points for mockingbird though that song is just awful

Classic

Every song a hit, Dusty croons her heart out. Need this one on vinyl.

I had a great time with this one. Sometimes music doesn't have to be A Big Artistic Thing. Sometimes it can just be a talented vocalist having fun with beloved songs.

I love Dusty

The performances are so good I don't care it's all stolen. 4 Stars.

Apparently she didn't write any of her own stuff. That is too bad but she sings other people's songs very very well.

British legend

Dusty's voice is so powerful and there are a great variety of tracks here that show how great she is. I had never heard her before (and truthfully I thought that a debut of covers from the early 60s wouldn't be so interesting) but I adored this one.

I enjoyed this album. I’d never listened to more than the odd song from Dusty Springfield if it was on the radio or a compilation album. She has a good voice, but the reason she ends up with a four, instead of possibly challenging for that coveted 5, is the same as a number of singers and groups from this era - that they end up releasing albums with a load of covers or songs that other artists also do. I know it was for a number of reasons, including radio play, but whilst bands like The Beatles and Rolling Stones were (largely) doing their own thing it’s a shame more singers weren’t able to.

Really enjoyed the album

Great mix of songs. Lots of known ones.

I liked it! Had an iconic song I've heard covers of. 4 stars

groovy-soul as heck

Fun, enjoyable listen. Great voice, and easy to listen to. 4/5.

Great cover album. Good selection of songs. Good production. Better recordings than the originals. Great voice. I'm sure Adele and Amy Winehouse must have heard this. But to be honest, 12 songs is enough. I didn't need any bonus tracks. I don't really have a favorite song. They're all good.

Sonido icónico del que solo las mujeres de los 60 podían hacer. Me gusta escuchar como el mundo empezaba a cambiar en esa época a través de la música. Favs: You Don't Own Me, I Only Want to Be With You, I Wish I'd Never Loved You, Summer is Over

I don’t think I’ve heard of Dusty before this. I see it’s an album of mostly covers and there may be some ethical concern with her choice of US soul music. Not sure what to feel about that part. Overall it’s an high energy album, it seems clear Dusty loved singing these songs, and it makes for a great listen. 4/5

Very good. Downloaded four tracks.

Most excellent, all killer no filler.

The bangers are great. A few songs lag a bit. Overall a great album

Gut aber alt. Ein Lied in Playlist übernommen

Great music from long ago - still great

Loads of classics!! Mock-ing Bird!

Impressive album! This album had went in many cool directions. I got to listen to Freebird in its original context

When I saw Dusty come up, I internally cringed a bit. Great, I though, a country girl from the deep south. But I have to apologise to Dusty-she is not who I thought. And I ended up enjoying the album, too. So yeah, that was unexpected, but this album is really good.

Enjoyable, don't hate it, but don't love it

Her voice is great, just great classic songs, easy listening that I'll definitely come back to again.

I was falling in and out of sleep for unrelated reasons to this album so my review is not very solid but I enjoyed this album whenever I was awake. Lots of fadeouts. Last song was banging

A perfect time capsule for mid-60s brit-pop. Her voice is incredible. "Wishin' and Hopin'" is the definitive version of the song. There are a handful of others on the album that aren't the definitive versions, but they easily could be. Not for nothing, hearing this album got me wanting to watch Last Night In Soho again because it felt like it could have been hte soundtrack for the movie. I had actually forgotten that Wishin' and Hopin' was used in the first 15 minutes of the movie. 4 stars.

Lots of great pop hits. Truly a prolific and talented artist and a great album.

Like a bit of Dusty

I've only ever listened to Dusty In Memphis. That was a mistake. This is a half hour of brilliant 60s pop.

From the start this album sounded way more modern than I expected. Damn good album and one of the biggest surprises so far on this list. Halfway through the album I stopped listing favorites because there were too many. Favorites: Mama Said, You Don't Own Me, My Colouring Book, Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa, Summer is Over

Good variety, incredible singing

I wish I didn't already know all these songs, these versions aren't different enough. Still, those are good songs and Dusty is a good vocalist

Classic! So many bangers

So many good songs on this album and what a voice. Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa and Summer Is Over are just incredible.

I was expecting pop nostalgia, but this was more. I heard influences of girl groups as well as a soulfulness of an Adele precursor--without the vocal range, of course, but packing some power--and she put her own twist on lighter tunes. Very heartfelt.

I think overall I liked some songs better than others. I'd give the album a 3.5 rating but I'll up to a 4 since I may listen to it again. My favorite previously unknown to me song is You Don't Own Me.

Sorprendentemente divertente. Lei una gran voce e i pezzi sono coinvolgenti

I’m a sucker for the Motown and Bacharach/David tunes.

didnt finish, but i really liked it

Refreshing

Hmmm... Finally a 60s album I actually enjoyed. Dusty had a sultry, throaty voice. I can imagine the influence she had on so many other singers. A few classics I recognise, wasn't expecting to like this one at all.

uneven but pleasant

Her voice is great but not too keen on the OTT strings on some of the tracks

I thought this album started off real strong but felt a little single flavor after a while

this had some bangers on it, really fun record and she has one hell of a voice, songs were short but punchy and it was just good fun to listen to

classic

I feel like this album was very consistent with great tracks all around. Dusty's vibe is the same in this album as the other one I have listened to on this generator, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. A lot of the big hits I know her for are on this album. Once again, her vocals are beautiful and her songs full of the themes of love, revenge, and self-confidence her previous album had. My only complaint is it was a tad long, but I can look past that.

The further from the schmaltz she stays the better. Like the album really could’ve done without My Colouring Book. But what she does with Mockingbird here is just brilliant and her range on Tulsa is bananas—and also remaking that male player story from a woman’s perspective is such a classic fuck you to the stuffy gender roles of the 60s, loved it

Dusty is badass

A really enjoyable listen full of fun 50s/60s pop songs. It's a bit disappointing that it's all cover songs though.

Pretty good.

The thing about today's popstars is they're not Dusty Springfield.

What a fantastic vocal range on a bunch of fun tunes. Her singing is so expressive, and I liked the orchestral backing. This made me nostalgic for my high school choir days, so I enjoyed it. Saved a few songs to my brass playlist and a bunch to my Deezer favorites. Listened before? N Saved to library? Y Favorite track(s): You Don't Own Me, Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa, Don't You Know My ratings are kind of based on general vibes and how many tracks I save to my Deezer profile -- ⭐⭐⭐⭐: Really liked it. Saved a bunch of tracks.

Reminds me of Aretha

Dusty Springfield is wonderful. Her voice is so nice and her arrangements of these tunes were all great. I will admit that that 60's pop sound does get on my nerves a little after about an hour (this seemed like a long album!), but it's still good on the whole. Four stars.

I think this is a really strong album, but because the songs aren't original to the artist I'm inclined to cap my rating at 4 stars. The song selection is great though. "Mama Said," "You Don't Own Me," "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes," "Mockingbird," "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa," "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," "Wishin' and Hopin'" - all of these, great. I don't know if Dusty's recordings are the versions of some of these that I'm familiar with, but she does them well. Easy to imagine this might end up being best-in-class for this style of traditional 50s/60s pop album.

Really enjoyed this, classy and classic.

Nice singing

Very cute, I Only Want To Be With You is a banger

Previously rated: Dusty In Memphis (4/5) **************************** I didn't expect a second Dusty Springfield here, but I'm OK with it. The songs here are good, though many are covers. It sounded like she wasn't 100% comfortable with her voice yet, with some of the soulful affectation sounding a bit forced and awkward. Next time I I hear this album I will listen to all the bonus tracks. Best song: Wishin' and Hopin'

This was good. In the same way most white British women pretending to be black woman from the Mississippi Delta are. Its one of those albums where I know I've heard the name and the music is good then the single hits and I'm like ooohhh. This is why it's on here.

Great album! I think this was the first time I actually clicked play in Dusty Springfield, though I had heard a handful of songs before. Will definitely start listening to her more often.

Some classics here.
