Great album

Great album

Of its time but a great soulful voice

I feel like I shouldn't like this as much as I do. Maybe it's the doo-wop elements or the brass, but it's got nothing that I would want more from it. It's genuinely just a really good album.

Golden oldies here

202/1089 - Great voice and cool arrangements. Dunno why it's here. I thought the Memphis album was stronger and covers very similar ground to this debut. Not on this album but I like the Sting song she did.

If there is a fire going and it’s nearly Christmas this is a strong 4. In summer on headphones high 3. Should I score this down for all the covers … she does put her own spin on the tracks. This would be a nice record to own as I could see myself playing it. It lends itself to that format. Low 4/5

An iconic voice, an iconic persona, giving her definitive take on an exciting selection of soul standards. She really understands and unlocks the potential of the material. When it's good, it's good, but on the several occasions that it's great, it is truly something else.

Settling on a low 4, was going to reduce down to 3 as all covers and standards but can’t quite as it’s a great record with plenty of definitive versions on it.

Quite a few bangers on here

Debería ser más conocida esta mujer.

Unterschiedliche Stimmungen, aber schön arrangiert.

I think 'anyone who had a heart' is amazing. I love the soaring vocals on some of these songs. some I could give or take.

Musica bellina anni 60, ci sta, piaciuto

What a voice.

Some great songs on here. Esp ones I didn’t know were her but heard elsewhere

8.6/10

Slaps. Surprised me as well, I actually liked this one!

She has a beautiful, soulful voice. She's a wonderful interpreter of songs, like Frank Sinatra. Mockingbird is a terrible song. Twenty-Four Hours from Tulsa almost tricked me into believing it was Down in the Boondocks. Anyone Who Had a Heart is a good album track...it reminds me of something I can't put my finger on. Will You Love Me Tomorrow is a great song. I'm sure she gets judged nowadays as a cultural appropriator because of all the R&B songs she covered. Every female blue-eyed soul act owes this woman their career, Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone, all of them.

Although I enjoyed this on my first listen, it's taken me a few more spins to come to fully appreciate the album. One can hear her R&B-influenced singing, and many of these songs are covers and originally done by female black singers. She adds British pop spin to the songs. For what it is, it's a great record.

Dusty is a legend

Sounded nice. Not a bad song on there. But it didn't elevate to a higher level.

I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did, but really catchy melodies and a great voice left me pleasantly surprised.

> the Beatles I don't know why I thought Dusty Springfield was someone/something else but this was pretty good

cool and fun timeless album with some hits

Dusty Springfield has an amazing voice that helped pave the way for artists like Amy Winehouse and Adele. This album is full of her beautiful voice and nostalgic sound. It was a winner for me.

I think Dusty in Memohis held together better but this got better as it went along and I realise she had so many big songs even on her first album. Granted they are almost entirely other people's songs so I'm not entirely sure it's her version I know but still. Low 4.

Certainly, the start of a new era of pop vocals. Well crafted covers and really big vocals. Great version of Goffin/King's "Will You Love Me Tomorrow". "Don't You Know" (ray charles) is a proper jazz hall tune, rolicking.

Good, but not very memorable

Nothing was that memorable (or new) in this album, but I'm grateful because 1) I didn't really know about Dusty before this, love learning about lesbian icons; 2) She really does have an amazing voice

I found these songs stronger lyrically compared to the Elvis album other than some gymnastics to land the rhyme (Then he asked if he could walk my way, I hoped sweet things he'd say) but musically less exciting, but that's just a genre preference to rock. Strong showing by like the fourth female artist we've heard. During the song Wishin' and Hopin', she ends the song with "do this and you will be his" which is a total unravelling of You Don't Own Me, so -1 down to 3

The sound wasn't super novel by the time Dusty Springfield released this album. But as I tell my students when we're writing papers - you can either be first or you can be right. And while Dusty may not have been first, I get the feeling that she did it right with this record.

A lot of these songs were just pure fun and fresh. Sometimes it feels like restraint is the name of the game, and it really shows in this album. I'm giving it four because of just a few songs that didn't really register for me that I found a bit laggy

Thoroughly enjoyed it, she has such a versatile voice. Amazing album and will definitely check out her others.

There's a quality to the production of 60s rock 'n roll, and especially r&b and soul, that has this thick, slightly hollow, bassy sound that's like a warm blanket. It's the audio equivalent of looking at a black and white photo that places it in—and of—a time and place that I really connect with. It's transportative. Dusty has a really powerful and yet understated vocal quality that transcends the simplistic and reductive association with vanilla soul. The core of soul music is in the vocal expression, and she's got it all the way to her bones. You can tell she's feeling it, and that's really what matters, isn't it? This is soul music through and through, even if she's a white girl from the UK. Some of the compositions are a little sing-songy, and there are perhaps one or two too many cover versions, but what are you gonna do? They just did this a lot back then. I gotta say Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me" belongs with its originator; Dusty didn't bring enough to it to really justify a cover. However, she really adds an urgency and honesty to the Bacharach penned "Anyone Who Had a Heart" that might surpass the original. And of course "Wishin' and Hopin'" is a certified classic. I mean the little "yeeeeah" she delivers at the beginning of Ray Charles' "Don't You Know" is absolutely sample-worthy. Essential.

Pretty good.

This album highlights Dusty as one of a kind.

I didn't realize so many of her iconic tracks were on this one album. But, then, there are a lot of tracks here. I don't hold her up against my favorite female vocalists, but a lot of these tunes are lodged in my head, and I don't mind.

Love me some Dusty Springfield, and thankfully Pulp Fiction breathed some life into her catalogue of music. But even before that, back in 1987 she sang on the previous album on this list (coincidence?) with The Pet Shop Boys’ Actually in the song “What Have I Done to Deserve This?” Her voice is like just so smooth. Even on the middling tracks, her voice is warm honey. She is up there with Rosemary Clooney, Peggy Lee and Patsy Cline. Still love Dusty in Memphis more, but this is a quality album. P.S. I definitely thought of Dumb and Dumber with “Mockingbird.”

is good. great voice and some classics here 4/5

Throwback oldies. Nice to hear

Classic songs, great voice. Really good listen from beginning to end. Maybe a 4.5 and only knocking for not being a songwriter.

The Good: We know who we’re listening to… The Bad: She’s a woman, which means we need to listen to the songs in a different way… The Ugly: That damn eye-liner… I know I had heard her stuff before, but never an album. Then you read Wiki and you realize what a massive influence she’s had on music… I don’t know about the rest of you, but I was waiting for some goomba to come out of the woodworks to shoot a cap in my back. Felt like I was watching Good Fellas all over again… Having said all that, after a while, the music all blends in to become bland, and that isn’t what I was after either. Don’t know… I think I am going straight down the middle with this one, even if she kind of deserves a minimum of 4*… Let me read some reviews….

Definitely dated, but there were some really solid moments on this.

Would buy it

Entretenido

Love it

Perfect pop. A lot of filler but as much as sublime. You Don't Own Me and Wishin' And Hopin' especially so.

Great album. Very distinctive voice

What is it about Dusty and her lovely voice? It's soulful, hopeful and vulnerable. It's genuine and it connects, with me at least. I first heard a few of her big hits as a teenager. I wasn't listening to anything remotely similar in the 80s and 90s but bought a compilation and loved it. This is a bit of a mix. I could listen to anything she did. This doesn't have many of her VERY best but Anyone Who Had A Heart, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, Wishin' and Hopin' and Colouring Book are wonderful. The extended version on Spotify is too long but I'm rating the original album tracks!

It’s all covers and doesn’t have som of a preacher man on it, but Dusty still sounds great.

Great vocals, low 4

a generational sound, love her voice

I was so excited bc I haven’t heard this! but then somehow I knew 75% of it :P hit after hit after hit

First half insanely good like 5/5 for me, drops a bit in the middle, then gets awesome again, EDTION breaks my heart tho :/ Fav song: Mama Said (AMAZING!!!)

While listening, there were songs I was familiar with that I heard from different places, but never knew the names or the singer. Also, I noticed many songs were short, as they are today. Was that normal back then? I recognized some of the writers and producers like Holland-Dozier-Holland, Ray Charles, Burt Bacharach, and Carole King. Definitely an album I'll need to listen to more than once to take it all in.

Blue-eyed soul is fun, great to move to. A whole lot of rhythm. Dusty has an endearing voice. Reminds me of Peggy Lee.

Man, this lady comes with the hits. Yea, they’re cover songs, but done so well, in to a pleasant, cohesive sound. I was unfamiliar with her name last time her album was generated, so I was excited to get another from her.

Wow, she was non-goth Amy Winehouse

Nostalgic

i feel like this is who adele was basing her entire career off

generally a cover album, lot of hit songs and well produced

Aged well

I didn't expect this album to go this hard.

There is so much I could say but I am going to keep it short, This screams the sixties to me, her voice is amazing. Great album

I saw this and first thought…ugh.ok. I’ll finish it. Because I have to. But damn. This was so good! So many songs I knew and didn’t realize who did it, and other ones I was just getting down to. This is what Amy winehouse could have been.

Song: Mama Said i really like this song and i like the person singing it and i like the beat and stuff it is actually good i would give this song like a 4 stars Song: You dont own me this song is actually i really like it it has a good beat at first it was scary but it got really better this song would be 3 stars Song: wishin and hopin this song is good i really like this song it was all over Tik Tok so i heard of this song and it is really good by now she is maybe in her 60s i would give this song a 4 stars this whole album will get four stars

Amazing voice

Неплохой поп-альбом в духе своего времени. Я слишком давно его слушал, чтобы что-то вразумительное про него сказать. Он приятный, но в принципе можно пропустить.

Who else sang like this in the U.K / Europe in 1964? Ok, Lulu's Shout appeared a month later from the release of this, and then there was Cilla a bit later... But anyway Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien has to be seen as the pioneer, inspiration and role model to so much to what happened in the mid 60s in the whole Europe, be it yé-yé, schlager in Germany, Finland or France and even the Eurovision song contest. The Merseybeat did one thing, this one another. Then again the question is why this album in this list? A few years later Look of Love, Dusty in Memphis... songs written for her or songs made immortal by her... Here we are looking at a beginning, an interesting beginning, but shouldn't this type of collection concentrate on the madterpieces? Or then name the book 1001 records which changed the world. If they could find that many. For me it was a nice chance to get to know some Dusty songs which are not in the classic albums or in the collections.

Such a lovely voice and I love the very 50s feel of it all. I love it whilst recognising that it's also a set of covers, which I know was of the time. I don't know though, the more I listen the more I think this is just something to enjoy.

How have I lived my life without Dusty. I love this album.

Love Dusty

Dusty is solid, Dukes of Highgate vibes

its fun. it is a little lame that they are covers but she has a good voice

I've some Dusty Springfield's songs before, but this is something else.

An album full of bangers. Enjoyed this one. Didn’t realize how many of her songs I’d heard before in movies/etc.

Pretty good. Didn't realize I would like it so much. I actually recognize many songs.

It was good. Refreshing. Definitely not something I normally listen to but found myself enjoying it. I still think it is a shame Son of a Preacher Man was not on her chosen album though.

I have no problem highlighting interpreters of other people's work, but why do we have two albums by Dusty Springfield and none by Linda Ronstadt? And why did she record You Don't Own Me after Leslie Gore? Nonetheless, this is fantastic. And I have to give a shout to Carole King, who is absolutely holding her own with the likes of Bachrach & David and Kander & Ebb, with a song she wrote at age 18.

It was alright! I prefered it to some of the other ones and I recognise a few of the songs already which was nice

I actually knew quite a few of these!

I enjoyed it a lot. I didn't realize so many of her songs had been covered by others. It was a great 60s time capsule record, very fun to hear.

Track 1 (Mama Said) Good Track 2 (You Don't Own Me) Really Good Track 3 (Do Re Mi) Do Re Mid Track 4 (When The Love Light Starts Shining Thru His Eyes) Decent Track 5 (My Colouring Book) Good Track 6 (Mockingbird) Meh, I don't like the execution Track 7 (Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa) Good Track 8 (Nothing) felt weak Track 9 (Anyone Who Had A Heart) It's good Track 10 (Will You Love Me Tomorrow) Good Track 11 (Wishin' and Hopin') I didn't really care for it Track 12 (Don't You Know) Decent Track 13 (I Only Want To Be With You) It's Alright Track 14 (He's Got Something) It's whatever Track 15 (Every Day I Have To Cry) It's alright ig Track 16 (Can I Get A Witness) Good Track 17 (All Cried Out) It's alright Track 18 (I Wish I'd Never Love You) decent Track 19 (Once Upon A Time) decent Track 20 (Summer Is Over) good Some of the tracks were good. Not really sure why (Wishin' And Hopin') is the most popular track. The Album could have been shorter. 4/5

Based on the first track I thought I knew exactly what I was in for: 60s bubblegum pop. Boy was I wrong. The range of styles in this release and Dusty’s performance surprised me. She brought the fun. She brought the emotion. She brought the sass. She brought the rock. Excellent arrangements and recording quality elevated this listening experience even further. There’s something for everyone here. Something about Dusty’s voice struck me, and I realized after a few tracks that Adele sounds quite a lot like her. I wonder how much of an influence Dusty may have been? Adele would do well to break her career’s glass ceiling and rise with ambition to the stylistic and emotional diversity shown on this album.

What a banger

Great songs, great singer. What's not to like.

I love me some Dusty Springfield, and this album is chock full of her hits. This is solid 1960s pop, with great vocals belting out the melodrama, great arrangements, and great songwriting from the likes of Burt Bacharach and Carole King. It's always kind of amusing to me how records back then featured so many covers. Faves here are Wishin' and Hopin', I Only Want To Be With You, and Will You Love Me Tomorrow (can't top The Shirelles' version, but this one is also great). 4.5

Hauntingly great vocals. Bit long but very enjoyable. 8/10

powerful and soulful voice that’s bursting with confidence. this album is a true classic.

Actually hadn’t listened to her music before. Had heard of her, but what a surprise. Just a perfect poppy album, she has such an amazing voice. The harmonies on some of the songs are fantastic. Not my genre of music typically, but great listen!!

This was great. Amazing voice, great arrangement, a small number of songs needed more work (colouring book?). But lots to enjoy. Definitely cool.

Very pleasant and warm singing, easy to listen to. A couple of fun songs here and there.

Soul meets 60's pop. Pleasant and good vibes

A classic singer interpreting classic songs. All covers covered well. Unique voice that fit perfectly with the British Wave that was just getting started.

classic

"You don't own me" is great, the rest of the album is okay

Great album. So many great songs. Another surprise.

Vähän samoissa maailmoissa kuin edellinen Sinatran albumi. Kuitenkin tässä on käytetty huomattavasti enemmän mielikuvitusta. Kappaleissa tunnetta - Sinatran laulanta kuulostaa tähän verrattuna suihkukoppihymäilyltä.

Great voice!

Good bluesy album

I thought the only Dusty Springfield song I knew was Son of a Preacher Man. After hearing A Girl Named Dusty, it turns out I knew a few more! This was an absolutely lovely listening experience! I had no prior history with A Girl Named Dusty. But I will have future encounters with it. I added this album to my music library as soon as I was done. And I didn’t know she was British! I learned all kinds of things thanks to this album. I really like her voice. Covers or not, this was a delight. A very strong 4 for me. 4/5

Nebe “a dust called girly” mis Lieblingsalbum vode Dusty. Ihri Stimm isch scho sehr einzigartig und irgendwie hani au en chliine crush uf d dusty, bzw uf ihri Stimm. Viel meh Filmmoment-Energie wie all die 60er Albe vode alte, wiise ami-rockers, das macht scho spass zum lose und het I paarne Wuchenend-Moment optimal inepasst. 4 Staubchörner for you gaaaarllll!

am fritig ahgfange, gliebt aber insgeheim gwüsst das isch es mentigsmorge-album und da bini korrekt gsi: macht sehr vill spass! love you dusty, 4g sternestaub for you

Nice and classic sounds, nostalgic and just perfect for eventful days

I didn't realize how many classic songs were all on the same album, so that was a fun surprise - like who doesn't know (and love) I Only Want To Be With You and You Don't Own Me? I'm a big fan of Dusty's voice and her sound definitely borrows from a lot of other soul musicians of the time, but she does it well and makes it her own IMO. I really enjoyed listening to familiar favorites on this album and was happy to save a few more songs I hadn't heard before too.

72/100. A Girl Called Dusty by Dusty Springfield is a short and sweet pop-soul record that showcases her signature charm and vocal strength. While a few tracks truly stand out, like the powerful "You Don’t Own Me," much of the album is simply fine—pleasant but not particularly memorable. Still, it’s a solid debut that hints at the greatness she’d go on to achieve.

Not familiar with a lot of these songs. Enjoyable but wanted more Burt Bacharach bangers. I know it sounds shallow but I guess I've been spoilt by the big hits.

Dusty's debut sparkles and crackles and showcases the voice that would enrapture and entrance over the next few decades. OK so there's little original here, it's mostly covers of other artists, but she imbues the tunes with a passion rarely felt in or by others. Can we talk about how much better her version of Anyone Who Had a Heart is than Cilla "Voice Like a Fire in a Pet Shop" Black? As is Dionne Warwick's for that matter. Put it on, sit back, relax and enjoy.

An interesting pick for someone who flies under the radar in pop music terms and the author(s) could easily have picked anything that included her few hits. This album is a class pick that shines the light on Vega as a natural inheritor of the crown from other female singer songwriters like Baez and Mitchell. 3.5/5

Really solid album with lots of great tracks. I knew almost all of these songs. Just on the 4 side of 4.5.

It's kind of a rare moment when I don't want an album to end. I'm planning on listening to it a few more times before going to bed. Current rating: 8/10

Can’t fault a bit of Dusty. So many recognisable cuts on this album. Classic Cafe Kelvinos material.

That was enjoyable

An objectively good album, an absolute classic, in a genre I don't really listen to. Good for when I want those vibes but not something I'm adding to my regular rotation.

Rippin good album. I've honestly only listened to the 'hits' but this album rocks. Lot of soul and passion behind Dusty here. I know she was a star with The Springfields, but such a sick debut album. Love the Ray Charles cover. Every Ounce of Strength is such a fuckin bop.

Pretty good soul for a white british woman in the 60s. I would have much rather had this from a black woman. Regardless, I enjoy the energy, the voice, and the songs. It kind of reminds me of like Amy Winehouse or Adelle but from the 60s.

Entertaining. I knew more of these songs than I thought I would.

Mama said there was albums like this she listened to with her daddy. It's a classic. I love the glitzy combo of pop and soul that brings in just the right amount of country. A great welcome to the stage in solo fashion

I knew so many of these songs. Great voice. You don't own me.

A collection of songs does not make an album, but who cares.

Mostly enjoyed, I think I knew a bunch of these songs without knowing who sang them.

charmig skiva, oemotståndligt 60es sound

Fantastic artist, taken from us far too young.

Very enjoyable listen. Recognized quite a few.

I just want to call out the fact that this album has "all cried out" and "every day i have to cry" like okayyyy dusty we get it u a sad gworl

I love you Dusty

I love Dusty, i so dusty, dusty Dusty Springfleid

Boppy and 60s. Fun

Music from a simpler time. Easy vocals, orchestral accompaniment and made for three minutes airplay

I thought it was going to be mediocre like the other Springfield album I got but this one was just really enjoyable. I liked the overall faster beat that early 60s albums bring which is probably why I liked it so much.

Never heard of her but really like the music and recognize a surprising number of songs!

Hell of a debut. Missing my fave song of hers tho. Summer is Over was a banger. 3.8.

This is one of those strange 60s records with an apparently random mixture of song styles but Dusty's amazing voice shines through.

60s pop with a bit of bit... albums got some edge, a little sultriness, but still fits within that classic pop sound. It's very good. This is the music my mom played when I was young, so it get's an extra star for nostalgia.

I liked that WAY more than I expected to. I guess Dusty Springfield has been in a blind spot for some reason. Great voice, nice arrangements.

I like her voice. I'm not sure if she's the first person to do some of these songs but I liked her versions.

Her voice is great and makes listening to this 60s era pop a fine listen.

All the classics!

Great voice, since so many of these are covers or standards it already feels familiar. Lots of fun to listen to

Classic - haven't heard all of these together and there were a few I hadn't heard at all before but it was a nice listen

A musician I’ve heard of for years, but haven’t actually heard. This was really enjoyable, the kind of album I’m surprised I didn’t get from my folks. I’ll be checking out more of her stuff!

I enjoyed the lightness of this album, and the wistful notes about love. Lots of easy listening songs, and a few hits.

Shocked how modern this album sounds. Her voice is amazingly powerful. Liked this way more than I thought I would like a 1964 pop album.

7/10 Fav tracks - Mama said, when the light starts shining, my colouring book, twenty-four hours from Tulsa , Anyone who had a heart, I only want to be with you,

If you placed a gun to my head before I listened to this album and asked me to say where Dusty Springfield was from I would have looked at you and my last spoken words on this earth would have been "USA. The south.", prior to this I had heard a handful of Dusty's songs (all post Memphis clearly). Listening to this album is a rollercoaster ride, some song slow up and others give you whiplash in the best way possible. The upbeat songs feel triumphant and fills a room with positive energy. Dusty's voice is unique and commands joy, people say that you can't listen to Mr Blue Sky without cracking a smile and the same is definitely true for songs like Nothing. Banger after banger, this is a short and sweet album that takes you on a ride. Highlights: Mama Said, You Don't Own Me, My Coloring Book, Nothing, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Wishin' And Hopin'

This is not a style of music that I would normally just put on, but I really enjoyed this album.

Very soulful.

Didn’t realize all these bops were Dusty’s

Classic blue-eyed soul.

It was shocking to me how many songs off this album I knew without realizing. That alone gives a +1 rating because that exemplifies how truly influential this was to the world. Besides that- I enjoyed both what I knew and what I didn’t.

Interesting feminine view not usually heard on albums of the early '60's.

This is a weird one because on first listen through the speakers it was a bit meh in that I felt that the classic versions of the songs overshadowed this album. However on second listen through the earphones it sounded much better, her phrasing and her voice sound so good. Weird how that happens sometimes

really enjoyed this one, very light and fun. sounds like lady gaga at times

I've always known of Dusty Springfield, but never listened. The first half of this album was giving diet Aretha Franklin lite, but after listening all the way through I totally understand how Dusty rightfully acquired her own stardom AND I just found she way gay Favorite tracks: - Wishin' And Hopin' (the anti-manifestation song lol) - Mockingbird - Anyone Who Had A Heart

lovee it! she has such a fun sound

Some classic faves on here. 3.5 rounded up to 4.

Thought this might be one of those albums that has legendary critical status but is undeserving. I was wrong — this is quite good, with great vocals, a fun variety of songs, and poppy arrangements.

I really like her! Nice album overall

A nice 60s album with good few hits

I love Dusty Springfield. I often say I don't like an album on here because I don't like the voice. Well, I love Dusty Springfield's voice! But I don't necessarily love all her songs. When they are good they are the best. But I'm more of a "Best Of" person when it comes to her. I enjoyed listening to this album though, and the high points are super high - "You Don't Own Me," and "Anyone Who Had a Heart" for example. Some of the other tracks feel a bit kooky and sixties in a way which is a bit too much for me. But still. Very good!

A classic…. Loved this…

Dusty goes soul.

Lacking a bit of soul from that area but solid

This is kinda a tough album to review. Her voice sounds amazing, and the album is reasonably well-produced. I like it overall. However, she's not doing original songs, and none of the songs on here are what I would consider to be a definitive version. Like, You Don't Own Me was released by Leslie Gore a year before this, and Springfield's version adds nothing to it. Each song is good, but I'm always left wanting to hear the better versions of these. 4/5 I can't fault her for not doing the best versions of these songs, but it would have been better with fewer songs that had been recently popular by other artists

Really enjoyed this album - very upbeat! An old classic that can still be enjoyed and even danced to these days but can also be listened to while chilling too. Definitely gives me dirty dancing vibes ;) hehe

Dusty is a ray of sunshine! A present for the ears! Uplifting and fun. Gives the feels of a Sunday cooking session in the kitchen. Many songs used in films and reignites the memory. Great background music. Very enjoyable!

Very good album! Only heard one of the songs before but can't say anything bad about it.

Lesbian bitches stay winning 💅🏻✨ I really went into this expecting it to be a “less than” album in Dusty’s discography. And while sure, it has a misstep or two, this is largely as consistent as Dusty in Memphis. It’s actually shocking how many tracks here are the definitive versions of these songs, and gun to my head, I never would’ve guessed they’re sung by Dusty Springfield. My biggest gripes are “My Colouring Book” and “Mockingbird,” two tracks that are perfectly decent but a little too kitsch, especially to close out Side A, and “Don’t You Know,” which does very little to make it sound uniquely distinct from its original version and so it never becomes a Dusty song while remaining an obvious Ray Charles song, and I’m not the biggest Ray Charles fan. Besides that, though, this record is hit after hit after motherfucking hit! It’s not the mountain peak of Dusty in Memphis, sure. Few records are. But I’m enamored by how good A Girl Named Dusty is despite not being her peak. More importantly, this record clearly proves that there’s a through line connecting Dusty Springfield to so much modern pop music; Lana Del Ray, Lorde, and arguably even Taylor Swift. All of these women and even more who came before would not have had a career without Dusty. That’s not evident from Dusty in Memphis alone, but it’s plain as fucking day here, making this an essential listen. Excuse me while I pause this project to listen to every Dusty record ever. Shoutout to a lesbian queen 🧡🤍🩷

Good old timey music. Dusty has a good voice. Standouts: All Cried Out, Summer Is Over, Don’t Say It Baby, Guess Who?, and Every Ounce Of Strength.

A nice pop album from the 60s. I liked her voice. Instruments well played. Very tasteful album, but nothing too impressive. I'll give 4 stars today.

esse álbum me trouxe a sensação de estar numa novela de época (aooo hilda furacão) e assim como eu gosto de coisas de época, gostei desse álbum??

Her voice is perfect.

hits galore. Much enjoy. What a voice

classic 60s pop from Dusty - what a voice.

i heard some songs and they are amazing

I'm actually surprised how many Dusty songs I knew without knowing the artist is Dusty Springfield :D I'm glad I stumbled over her. I've listened to another album after this one. Sort of oldie but goldie. Wouldn't turn it down, although not sure how often I'd play it.

What a voice. This is from the days when you needed talent to be a big star. So many great tracks on this album.

I think I like the other dusty springfield album better. Son of a preacher man and breakfast in bed are bangers. This was still nice tho

Still a big fan of Dusty Springfield's singing. This album is mostly covers and doesn't really do anything crazy, but like the last album, it's a generally pleasant listen

Fucking awesome!

For some reason I love easy listening, jazzy show tunes and 60's pop music in general apparently. I listened to the version of the album with the bonus tracks, so it's almost double the amount of songs and I never felt like I should put on something else. Utterly enjoyable listen, her voice is smooth and has nice rasp when needed. Awesome orchestral bits here and there speak volumes on how little actual studio work modern day music requires. Compared to the production values on this, all new music feels so plastic and disposable and I hate that.

Always thought Dusty was a dude.

some classic covers on here

I wasn't expecting two albums in a row by Dusty Springfield, but they worked nicely together. Such a good voice, and included sings that I didn't realize were hers.

Very surprising album after disliking Bruce Springsteen so much in his first appearance in this list. 4/5

a big chunk of dusty springfield's popularity has to be due to the simple face that of all the white artists singing soul and rnb in the 60s, she's one of the only ones who doesnt leave u a little embarrassed lmao. i think what's most impressive here is how she rides the line between obvious reverent enthusiasm for motown while not trying to specifically replicate anyone or put on a shitty Colored Music vocal affect. she is both indebted to her influences and wholly her own authentic thing, its a big part of why theres just absolutely no stiffness or lameness here at all...she's building from her influences, but finds her own thoughtful and charismatic way to reach the heights of warmth and grit u need for great performances of these songs. the spector-esque production is also a nice choice that rly drives home that she Knows and Loves her stuff. a good vindication of blue-eyed soul as its own evolutionary branch of music and not Just a dilution of something else, i think

Instead of repeating my review of the other Dusty album on the list here is: 80s latin cover of "I only want to be with you": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yG7MPEQm1-w K-pop cover of the 80s latin cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNcgx832uMM I thought the latin 80s cover was the original, until MSV in BK played the Dusty Springfield version.

整體雖然不是我特別喜歡的爵士風格,但聽起來很舒服。最喜歡「I Only Want To Be With You」,旋律很喜歡。

Guilty pleasure music for me. Just fun and heart felt pop music.

Отличный альбом, приятный голос и музыка

You Don't Own Me is one of the best songs ever but then we go into Wishin' and Hopin' and I lose all of the feminist touch. I love it over all and her voice is quite beautiful. However, some of the songs are so 1950's it is frustrating, but I can look past it because of the time frame.

This was pretty great. Not sure which songs are covers and which are originals but she does them all well and lots of fun old hits!

A really great collection of timeless songs recorded by an incredible singer. Just a wonderful album to listen to at any point. Classics all around.

As a millennial born in the 80’s, Dusty Springfield is one of those artists who has many songs I’ve heard many times, but if asked I wouldn’t be able to name the artist. Her debut album has several of these songs, including Mama Said, Mockingbird, and Wishin’ and Hopin’. This is a solid collection of songs and a pretty great listen all the way through. One take away is that the lyrics of Wishin’ and Hopin’ seem like terrible advice.

Beautiful voice

Very good. Nice voice, great music, just not my favored genre. But I'll give it four stars.

Lovely

Brava, c’erano certe canzoni che avevo già sentito ma non avevo la minima idea fossero sue Non ho capito però perché la mettono come categoria in “Jazz” Boh

Voice of an angel

Wonder set of songs and her voice is beautiful and beefy at the same time.

I don’t know if the 5am ghost was just hitting right this morning, but this was a surprisingly good album. I wasn’t expecting much at all. The highlight for sure is I Wish I’d Never Loved You, it’s soaring and dramatic and sung to perfection. Also, is Live It Up sounding really close to The Loco-Motion to anyone else? I know it’s not an uncommon chord progression, but it sounded pretty similar. Anyways, really enjoyed this album.

RIP to chaotic lesbian Dusty Springfield, you would've loved the 2020s

So many hits! This album was surprisingly really good. So many fun songs!

After giving Dusty In Memphis a low score - I wasn't expecting much from this. I really enjoyed it though!! I knew pretty much every song on here. Absolute classics!!! Sadly though, I don't think Dusty's covers are doing the originals justice. So much potential and they just felt a bit flat? Kinda lifeless The tracklist in itself would be a solid 5 but the songs themselves bring the score down. Still a good album that I would listen to again! 4 ⭐️

If you love Dusty, this is probably where it all started for you. She delivers her blue-eyed soul by the shovelful on this short album. I still prefer Dusty in Memphis on the whole, but this is damn good Dusty.

perfecte doo-wop gospel

Awesome album! Enjoyable all the way through. Dusty has won me over. Fav Track: You Don't Own Me

The low edge in her voice gives these airy pop songs a languid quality. These songs are tight and catchy musically and chaste and innocent lyrically, yet her delivery makes them vaguely sultry. definitely a strong influence on Amy winehouse, both in persona and singing style.

Had never heard this before. Really fun vibe. Didn't knock my socks off with hits, but I was very charmed.

So modern sounding for an album from ‘64. This album hit so much harder than I thought it would. I would marry Dusty Springfield, fuck Buffalo Springfield, and kill Rick Springfield. Sorry, was that not the question?

Great album of songs.

ok kind goes, didn't expect to vibe with this but Dusty won me over

I love her deep throaty voice. And the songs! So many great ones.

Her music is timeless. What a great album, a great singer and what a voice.

So many classics! A true template for music production

What a great selection of tracks. Lovely voice . Classic

Listening to this made me realize: Dusty Springfield was singing bangers while today’s artists are still arguing with autotune.

Lempparit: You don't own me, will you love me tomorrow Vähiten lemppari: Do Re Mi

Jede Menge Evergreens, einfach fantastisch.

Great stuff.

She has such a great voice. Very 50s/60s style. I loved several of the songs in the album. Since it is a lot of covers, it does knock it down. I listened to the original versions as well, and Dusty did a great job. To play devil's advocate, I think we can honor the merit of covers, since sometimes covers can be better than the originals, or take creative twists which can be enjoyable. In this case, Dusty did not change much overall, just covered them well.

I grew up listening to Dusty as my mum was a huge fan so I am probably biased. I knew every song on this album and even though they are all covers Dusty's voice is just so amazing she carried them all off flawlessly.

It's tough to believe this is the same person who sang "Son of a Preacher Man." Nice and peppy with a good voice. Not sure I would call it essential, though, especially considering this is very much not what I think of when I think of Dusty Springfield.

A really good album with a lot of Classic Dusty Springfield songs like Mama Said, You Don't Own Me and Don't You Know.

Dusty Springfield is one of the unsung heroes of the '60s. This was an introduction to what was coming, and what followed was amazing music.

Not many of her well known hits on here but she's got a cracking voice, I was into this alot, it's a 4 because there's maybe a few weak tracks and I think her other album is better

So many classics! Fun listen.

genuinely kind of befuddling that this voice comes out of a little blond british lady. gorgeous, dynamic. fav tracks: all cried out; i wish i’d never loved you; summer is over; do re mi

Fun, old timey

80% Best: Mama Said; When The Love Light...; Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa Must-Hear? Maybe

Some outstanding tunes, but also some duds. Which is a shame - at 20 songs, it comes in long, and cutting the four or five songs that aren't quite up there with the rest of them would still have been an album's worth of material. A bit curious in retrospect how much she sings about boys/him/he and it does sort of make you think about her image at the time and how she must have felt about that.

Great album. I was not familiar with Dusty Springfield at all and that seems like a crime. What a great voice and what a great interpretation of that 60's sound with a wide range of songs and killer vocals! Will definitely listen to again.

Its hard for me to rate an album of mostly covers but I do love her voice on these tracks with more soul/motown flavor.

This album wasn’t available on Apple Music so I had to cobble all the songs together into a playlist. Unsurprisingly, I knew most of these songs already, as my mom always had the radio on and set to oldies. Dusty has an amazing voice and I enjoyed this much more than Dusty in Memphis. There are some real classics on this album.

****A wonderfully pleasant album.

I really enjoyed this one! It was energetic and fun. Using some pretty emotional strings and a complex, orchestral/big band sound, without feeling over produced. At times dreamy, but consistently pop and soul based. Lyrically it was very one dimensional, but on par for it's time. It's an uncomplicated white girl heartbreak album. Some anguish at times, but for the most part the pop elements kept it upbeat and empowering. Fav Track: All Cried Out, I'm Gonna Leave You Least Fav: My Colouring Book (reminds me of another song, but I can't put my finger on it) Ratings Personal: 4/5 Critical: 5/5 List Approriateness: 4/5

I had heard a lot of the songs on this album growing up, and didnt realize they were all one artist! Dusty kills it- het voice is alluring and at times haunting, and I liked the themes about being an independent woman in a time where it was difficult to be one. Overall- very good motown album

It was a good album a couple of sonemgs I didn't know were hers. It was fun.

One of the best voices of all time singing classic songs - does it get better than this?

Something about music from the 60s gives it all more soul. You feel this music in your bones.

Today we go bee-hiving all the way back to the first album by Dusty Springfield, released in 1964 after she’d been exposed to soul music in the US, and put her time performing folk-pop in groups firmly behind her. “A Girl Called Dusty” throws together reliable standards of their day (a mixture of Motown and more traditional pop) with not a single original or tailor-made composition. My biggest struggle with this album has been the inevitable comparison exercise. Of the standards I’d heard before by other artists, I often felt the “originals” did it better (Springfield’s “You Don’t Own Me” has none of the same power as Lesley Gore’s classic version, “Anyone Who Had a Heart” lacks the punch of Dionne Warwick and even Cilla Black, and so on.) The arrangements also play it safe, staying very true to the original songs. If the likes of this album were released today by, say, Michael Buble, I’d raze it to hell. All that said, it’s still good to hear so many great songs all in one place, and Springfield is still an exquisite vocalist in her own right. I’ll also credit this album for introducing me to plenty of tracks I hadn’t heard and really enjoyed: “When The Love Light Starts Shining Thru His Eyes” is a riot from start to finish, and “Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa” boasts a gorgeously direct, melodramatic chorus. “Wishin’ and Hopin’”, perhaps the only track here to be predominantly associated with Dusty Springfield, is excellent too. And it’s a thrill to hear Springfield absolutely let loose in “Nothing” and even more so, “Don’t You Know”: let it put any doubts of her vocal power (have there ever been any?) to bed. The more upbeat and urgent the songs were, the more I enjoyed them. In the other camp lie the likes of “My Colouring Book”, a syrupy and sleepy ballad complete with cloying strings and church bells. But these weak spots are fairly few and far between: on the whole, “A Girl Called Dusty” boasts a great set of covers which rightfully placed Springfield on the map. Even while they may not match some of the originals, the songs are very well chosen and performed with enough oomph to elevate this to four stars.

Actually loved this. It’s never going to be core to my library of course, but would happily listen again

Perfect way to end the week, fun sing-a-long style album.

Das humorvolle “Wishing and Hoping” bringt eine leichte, beschwingte Stimmung, während “I Only Want to Be with You” als echter Goldie glänzt.

Lots of covers of my favorite songs. Great voice. Dare I say reminds me a bit of Adele?!?!? 🫣

I’ve always kinda hated the term “blue-eyed soul… you don’t hear the term “brown-eyed soul” because it sounds silly; soul doesn’t have anything to do with race. Dusty’s vocals in my mind were “soulful” enough that she’s in the same room as the queens such as Aretha, Dionne, Eartha, etc. and that’s all that matters; she brings it on every performance. And that’s my love for this album; the lead vocals, the background girl group harmonies, the mid-sixties “Shindig!” vibe, mixed with some Motown flavored grooves, and you got a winning combination. It’s the inconsistency of some of the covers that make this weaker than her sexy, sumptuous, “Sunday Morning vibe after a night of lovemaking masterpiece of an album. But still, no slouch this one! I think if she would’ve cut some of the “meh” tracks this becomes her 2nd masterpiece in my eyes; a shorter, tighter album would flow better, I think. But the gems? At their heights, it meets the highs of her best work, no doubt. Just a touch below what she’ll do in a few years when she makes her way down to Memphis and makes magic there. I like what she accomplishes here, knowing like Dr. Seuss, all the amazing places she’ll soon go. Glad to be educated about this part of her journey.

Just a touch of twang, nice easy listen.

rustigggg en degelijk i like

Dusty has an incredible voice and does it as good, if not better, than most. This album is full of classics, a great Saturday morning listen with the family. Added six tracks to the 1001 Experience playlist, could've easily added more.

A lot of classic songs on there.

4 - I liked this more than I expected for how old it is. Some tracks like you don’t own me aged incredibly well into blending with new-er sounds, but others really really didn’t, overall a good listen

This whole album screams "Amy Winehouse" - Dusty Springfield must have been a strong influence. And who can blame her? Dusty has a very strong voice that fits perfectly into the material, which is mainly 60s pop, but with strong melodies and arrangements. I'm glad that I can now appreciate Dusty Springfield a bit more. 4/5

Dusty Springfield is a legend and a treasure. It's lovely to hear her young voice, I love that era of girl group style music.

Extremely demure - collection of thoughtful bangers, range is much more expensive than I thought and holds up against later work. 3.7.

I gotta say, I was legitimately not expecting A Girl Called Dusty to be this good. When i was first exposed to Dusty Springfield with Dusty In Memphis, she seemed pretty good but this album truly brought out what she is capable of. The music was very good for a lot of these tracks and of course, the vocals and lyrics were incredibly top notch, the album also ran at a good pace so it never got tedious at all. I guess some of the ideas that Dusty tried didn't always pay off but for the most part, the album succeeded in what it was trying to do. Best Song: Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa Worst Song: Wishin' And Hopin'

Lots of great songs

Awesome, just awesome! What a set of lungs on this lassie! Beautiful, sultry, emotional and soulful.

great vibes and something you can jive to, dusty is a classic for a reason

Good album.

Blue eyed soul. Impossible not to get swept up in her singing. Fun to sing along with. More subversive than you might think. Excellent. 4/5

A perfect snippet of 60's. It's incredible to think this was her first album, she really was a very natural singer.

Sounds like a drive around town on sunny weekend day!

Great voice, great songs.

Great songs

enjoyable 4/5

Solid '60s pop. Could listen to this stuff all day. Reminds me of being in high school and having a car with only a radio in it. Just drove around all day listening to "oldies". Good vibes only.

Very solid.

Favourite tracks: you don't own me; mama said; will you love me tomorrow

I loved this album! It was so perfectly retro, yet so many of the songs still hit for me! Mama Said and You Don’t Own Me were my favorites.

Second Dusty album. I feel like “Dusty in Memphis” is better but this album is nice as well. 4/5

Listened to this while playing Paperback Adventures. I lost...but this album was a winner! I couldn't believe how many of the songs I knew. My partner grew up with his dad listening to this music, so he sang along to a majority of the songs. The arrangements are great...so many solid anthems. Solid 4.

Very cool 60s sound

Really hard to rate. Dusty has an incredible voice that is still relevant today whilst other singers might fall into the category of old fashioned. Turned out that I knew nearly every other song as well! I wouldn't sit and listen through this again, but I enjoyed nearly every song on here.

Dug it!

60s pop album with some soul influences. Nothing too spectacular as far as instruments go, but what elevated this album for me was the vocals. Dusty can sing! I enjoyed it.

Great old time vibes

Very enjoyable 60s energy

I just finished a Dusty Springfield album for the 1001 Album project and wasn't expecting to enjoy it all that much, but I did. I really enjoy her voice and style that the brings to most of these songs.

When someone is listing classics this better be up there - none of the songs miss! Before this I wouldn't have been able to tell you a song Dusty had sung and now I know she's responsible for so many hits with just this one album? In awe. Favourite track: You Don't Own Me.

A- Mama Said 3 You Don't Own Me 5 Do Re Mi 3 When The Lovelight Starts Shining Thru His Eyes 5 My Colouring Book 5 Mockingbird 3 Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa 5 Nothing 4 Anyone Who Had A Heart 4 Will You Love Me Tomorrow 4 Wishin' And Hopin' 4 Don't You Know 3 I did NOT see this coming. Sheeesh Dusty!

A Girl Called Dusty is the solo debut of Dusty Springfield, who may be the most acclaimed British soul and R&B Singer. She recorded songs with full orchestrations and rich arrangements, but the most notable sound is her strong, rich voice. This is a great collection of songs with the grandeur of early 60s pop song, with a timelessness that comes from Dusty's incredible voice.

Wonderful voice for soul. I just wish these were originals.

was gonna give it 3 but gets 4 for reminding me of dumb and dumber

I was always familiar, but I found myself getting really endeared to Dusty S. over the course of this album. So many iconic songs that she covered and many of which became the iconic version. Easy to see why, through her very full voice and approachable overall feeling, she felt like an old friend immediately.

great voice, good songs, nothing too special but good

Decent but a little long.

Lot of bangers on this one. It's a pretty impressive debut album given the number of classics on here. I'm not sure that there is anything that really sets Dusty apart from some of her contemporaries, but she picked a thing, did it as well or better than the rest of them, and found a lot of success with it. Great album, definitely worthy of the list.

May 16, 2024 HL: “You Don’t Own Me”, “Love Light”, “Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa”, “Anyone Who Had a Heart”, “Wishin & Hopin”, “I Only Want To Be With You” (bonus) I don’t love every song (“Do Re Mi”, “My Colouring Book”), but I love a good majority of them. I associate “Mama Said” & “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” with the Shirelles, but Springfield has cracking versions of both, particularly the latter.

mama said you don't own me when the lovelight starts shining through his eyes twenty four hours from tulsa anyone who had a heart will you love me tomorrow
