Reviews (page 2 of 13)

I don't want to review, just listen

Maybe my favorite experience with the genre so far (probably due to all the other genres present in the songs). Seen lots of people talking about how it's commercial crap made for selling cars, and though I don't remember any of the songs playing in advertisements here in my country, they really sound like they were made for that purpose lol. That doesn't really detract from the experience though; there's a wide variety of really good tunes in this. It loses a bit of steam in the second half, mainly in the spoken word and instrumental songs, but it still is a very solid record that I will revisit in the future.

Favorite Track: Find My Baby

Perfect balance of catchy and atmospheric! South Side was probably the first trip hop song I really liked years ago and the rest of the album 100% holds up.

I can’t believe this wasn’t already on my rotation I loved this! I need a CD immediately (it’s probably three disks lol this is a long ass album)

Rocker ulet!!

Le doy 4 leones 🦁 buenísimo para trabajar

Always a fan of this album. Probably the only thing I've heard from Moby. I think I remember a youtube compilation of the X files episodes where Mulder talks about her sister, with "My Weakness" playing in the background, it was so perfect. Lots of different sounds, funky stuff like in Honey, rock in Bodyrock, it feels like there's a song for each person and each moment.

Unforgettable tunes on this album. I love the echoey reverbed samples, combined with slow broken-beats. Reminiscent of sensuality and hedonism in the dance.

Feels retro and dreamy

Temazo tras temazo

I was unaware that I am a big Moby fan. Also this is the platonic ideal of early 2000s skater music. 5 / 5

Brilliant

Loved this since i was a kid. Porcelain is one of my favorite songs and imo one of the BEST songs. The soul samples and string arrangements still go really hard. GIVE THAT GUY HIS CDS.

Seminal, bit fan

10/10 - has so many bangers and hits, I'm seeing some complaints that the songs were overused on ads and the like but why is that a bad thing? Weird thing to complain about... Beats another generic 70s rock album on this list for sure

I LOVE this album. Let out an audible gasp when it came up

Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad,

Su mente ❤️‍🔥💞💘💖

wow had not heard this album before, just some of its songs. way better than i was expecting.

One of my favorite albums to listen to while skiing the pow🎿

Best album of the 1999 and best album in moby's discography

Took me the whole weekend to listen to its entirety. Meaning I had a really great weekend.

I thought this album was awesome. So many beautiful songs. Catchy, pretty, danceable. It really ran the gamut. Highly recommend.

Loved this album when it came out, as did most people - a real genre cross over which seemed to hit the mark commercially. Quite surprising now playing it back.

Love this one. A 4 or 5.

Superb. A go-to for bad-times recovery and re-alignment. Play is near perfection for getting me back to earth/sky. 5 aligned stars.

1: Honey 2: Natural Blues 3: The Sun Never Stops Setting

el millor del univers tk moby

After a week of albums no one should have to listen to ever, this is the light to keep me going in this project.

My first five of the list! While it does have some songs that could be cut, it has so many great songs, and even the B-tracks are worth listening to.

This is one of my favorite albums from start to end.

Was hoping some Moby album would show up, so glad to see it here! Personally I'm more a fan of the 18 album, but I suppose this is the more widely known one. Going into this I was convinced I'd give this 5 stars. A lot of people really seem to loathe Moby, but I really like his stuff. Sure, it's simple, but sometimes the simple things are also the best. And of course it's repetitive compared to other genres, it's electronic. Probably wasn't the first to sample old vocals to put over drum beats, but he did it very well in my opinion. Some valid criticism in my eyes would be that the tracks tend to sounds a bit too samey at times. There's numerous songs here that are good, like 'Honey', 'Find My Baby', 'Natural Blues', 'Porcelain', 'If Things Were Perfect' to name a few. To my surprise there's also a few duds, like 'Machete', which doesn't fit in at all, or 'Guitar Flute & String', and some more. This makes it a bit hard to justify the 5 star I initially thought it would get. In reality this might deserve a 4 stars, but this is just so much up my alley that I'll gift it a 5 anyways. The initial tone set for the album is kept throughout, and it just works for me.

I haven’t listened to this in a very long time. What stood out the most was how many of the songs are sampled old blues standards. Blues standards, add some piano, reverb, and repeat. Still, it sounds very good. There are so many singles from this album that it’s crazy. “Honey” is great, and so are “Porcelain” and “Natural Blues.” The first time I remember hearing any of the songs on this album is in the FIFA menu music which had “Bodyrock” playing. In the end, I feel a bit torn. Is this an Elvis-type situation, where a white guy takes Black music as his own and becomes a success while changing very little? Or is this music valid in its own right? I feel like it warrants recognition as its own work, and if people end up discovering the original songs, that only makes it better. Blues music didn’t have that much variety in any case, so calling this monotonous is kind of moot. I really enjoyed it. I feel like I’ve given many good albums four stars because I was a bit disappointed in them. I’m going to be generous and give this a five. It’s well worth a listen, and please check out the original sampled tracks — many of them are just as good as the songs on this album.

I feel changed after listening to this album... I've always heard the name Moby but have never actually listened to any of his music, and I loved it. I was listening to this album through and I came to Porcelain and my mouth dropped, because A$AP forever by A$AP Rocky has been one of my favourite songs since high school and I never knew that this is what that song was sampled. My favourite part of that song has always been the sampled part, because of how airy it feels, like it's lifting me off the ground. Today I realized, this whole album has that sound. This whole album has such a cool and fun sound to it, it made me get up and clean LOL I loved it so much and that was very unexpected. The album has such an adhesive sound and the sounds of each song flows so smoothly while I'm listening to it.

Playful powerful joyful

Great to come back to this

Brilliant album. So much variety from song to song but seems to retain a signature sound throughout. 2nd half stronger than the first and there are a few tracks that could maybe be shaved since it's over an hour but this is minor and does not detract. Great memories listening to this.

Super fun

porcelain 1999 united states electronica

I thought I knew about PLAY but i didnt really know about PLAY. Other than a few tracks hadnt really given it a listen throw. But is just full of so many bangers across different genres. Downtempo, souful electronic, good ole techno, breakbeats. Really fire album. I think I usually discredit other genres when the albums are too long and just have filler but the length on this makes me like it even more. So much good music throughout the album

First time listening to Moby: Honey: FINALLY SOME GOOD FUCKING FOOD!! I wasn’t expecting this to be a djing album but I’m happy. Find My Baby: Has a pretty simple sample but it’s nice to see how the guitar adds so flavor to it. It’s kind of a twangy thing that reminds me of Cake. Oh wow at like the 1:23 spot the violins and background vocals come in nicely. Another change around the 2:00 mark where the original sample is fading out and you hear them really playing around with other sounds and moving the disc. Then you are right back to the track that was around the 1:23 mark. Woah this is really layered. Around the 3:00 minute mark the audio jumps from ear to ear which is cool. Porcelain: Really pretty and hazy ethereal opening. I wonder if this is him singing. This reminds me a little of TV Girl just a little bit though. This was actually really nice. Why does my heart feel so bad?: This is sampling over an entire song like chopping. This is really nice. South Side: I didn’t expect much singing which is interesting. Rushing: another very ethereal sounding and feeling song where you let the beat making speak for its self. Very nice. The piano is nice. Bodyrock: Oh I love the electric guitar mixed with the beats. Wait “ To the beat y’all” made me think of the Beastie Boys “Whatcha Want.” Anyways this is very fun and energetic but also kind of mellow. Natural Blues: Nice blues sound mixed with mixing. 7: Reminds me of ping pongs going back and forth. I’m taking a break because this is a 2 hour long album. But the song after this sounded good. This album is everything all at once

This just became one of my new favourite albums. The journey it takes you on is peaceful, and each song seamlessly blends to the previous. I could get lost for hours listening to this album.

Absolutes Hammeralbum! Und bleibt zeitlos gut.

I very much enjoyed this album from Moby! I only knew a few songs before and I think this was my first time listening to a full album by Moby. This album was great and made me think, have I been sleeping on Moby for this long? Overall, I loved how he samples and layers in blues and roots into the songs to create an interesting and unique sound. I would definitely listen to this album again in the future!

Still as good as when it came out

Awesome

I do like this a lot and have for years. Moby does have a great ear for hooks and for creating interesting soundscapes. My one gripe about him is that he picks a cool hook or phrase and beats the living hell out of it. Something that sounds interesting 3 times, does not sound so interesting after you've repeated it 97 times in 3 minutes. I'm really glad someone gave him that box of old gospel and blues singers. Those are the highlights of the album. But again, pulling two lyrics out of a longer song and repeating them 30 times gets a little wearing. "Honey" alone might stop a lot of people form listening deeper into the album. Crazy way to start an album! I guess that's just a thing for techno, electronica, and dance music. Find a cool sound and then bludgeon us with it. Might be fine if you're partying and dancing. But to sit and listen? Nah. It sounds like I'm dunking on Moby here, but that's just the one thing I dislike about this album. Outside of that, it hits on all cylinders. There are so many inventive and interesting musical choice on here - the samples, the occasional guitars or key riffs. Always interesting. I definitely like the instrumentals and the mellower bits at the end. While they're not part of the release version, the songs that are included in the Complete Recordings, are (for the most part) really interesting soundscapes. Should be their own album. The mellower Play. Because it brought techno to the mainstream and is such a creative mélange of unusual styles and instrumentation, even if it is a bit repetitive sometimes, I'm actually giving this sucker a 5. Yes, everyone should listen to it at least once or twice.

very unique and very enjoyable

solid 5

the best thing ive ever listened to, literally blessed my fucking ears

These tunes slotted themselves right into my aural esthetic.

I like and I’m really picky with music

Fun fact. Every song on this album has its own video clip. Which is quite rare for an album.

One of my favorites. Electronic isn’t my go to but I bought this shortly after it came out. Listened to it many times. With 18 tracks, there are a couple that are just fine. However, there are many that are beautiful.

This album loses so much when out of context, as evidenced by some of the reviews here. It wasn't over-commercialised on it's release, it started the trend. Even if this isn't your kind of music surely you can appreciate that the guy was ridiculously good at what he was doing, and hugely influential. He knew all the right moves to make, he curated great samples and used them to great effect, over and over again. I was never a massive Moby fan but this is sort of like running into an old friend and having fun catching up with them. Some of it is genuinely beautiful, and yeah, the guy was well ahead of the pack.

Sounds like a skinny white vegan guy appropriating black music but I am still a fan!

Great electrician/pop album

Still one of my all time favorites. Techno at its finest🔥

Love it!

This was a HUGE album for me when it came out. I mean, yeah, since then we've realized Moby is kind of a dumbass, but damn, back in 1999, that white boy could mix. He introduced me to some great soul and gospel music, so whatever dumb bullshit he's done, this album still kicks ass.

Honestly, right up my alley. This is such a vibe! Fun and a bit wonky and seductive at times? But overall enjoyable!

Really liked the album and the story behind it

I had this one when it was first released. Massive then (eventually) and still holds up now. Virtually every song on this was a successful single.

One hit after another. Loved hearing this album again.

Koste meg overraskende mye med det

This collection is really stellar. Despite fair criticism of building tracks off of peerless blues samples (ie, Black music;) a kinda weak voice; and a couple middling tracks that close out the album, the first 80% is a joyride. Soaring gospel heights; undeniable dance beats; and rich textures that still sound good. It’s a classic.

this album made my bus ride and my day

Awesome

I love this album. I'd say I wore it out when it was first released, if it were possible to do that with digital media. My CD definitely got a lot of plays, is what I'm saying. Although when I hear this again I can't help but remember that Heavyweight episode where Jonathan Goldstein's friend went to confront Moby about stealing his Smithsonian Collection CDs and using them as samples for the songs on this album. Puts a bit of a different spin on it.

I once became a vegan because of this album (for a week - my willpower didn't survive a spring break barbecue). I've been listening to it for more than two decades and it feels like I only just realized what Moby is trying to do here, which is call back to and synthesize pre-rock blues ("Honey," "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad") with Seventies ambient music (the Eno-ism is especially poignant on "Inside") with modern sounds in disco and hip-hop music (complete with Gwen Stefani playing the Debbie Harry role on "South Side"). He's not just listening to Eno and Byrne and Pink Floyd and Scott-Heron - he's listening to the stuff they listened to. Which is why what he's made here contains multitudes - among them Wish You Were Here-esque lonesomeness ("Guitar Flute & String"), a "Dancing in the Street" for a new era ("Bodyrock"), and a spiritual call-out that, like all good spiritual call-outs, is really directed at the one doing the calling out ("Run On"). Also: if you were born to White parents between mid-2000 and early 2002, this album may be somewhat responsible for your existence.

I wore this album out back in the day

Amazing album but a hard listen due to circumstances when it came out

Very good album. Lots of iconic tracks used in films and pop culture.

I like it. very good for chillin

finally listened to this one! i think it’s a classic and now i’m not surprised why. the songs are so well mixed and flow into each other, but at the same time every track feels fresh. i feel like it mixes bits of electronic, ambient, trip-hop, even blues and gospel samples, and it all actually works together. plus, there are some huge hits here like porcelain, why does my heart feel so bad? and natural blues! - songs you’ve probably heard even if you never listened to the whole album

Lots of repetition, mixed bag, already knew Porcelain and South Side

I was surprised on how good this album is.

very good, 10/10, one of the best albums so far

One of the best!

Ahead of its times, slow and fast, many tracks brought me back. Will listen again!

Love it

Loved it from start to finish. 4.5/5 rounded up to 5/5

Un de mes classiques

Loved every song

I listened to this album a lot when it came out. The mixing of blues samples and electronic music worked perfectly for me. I haven’t heard the record in many years, and I was concerned I’d not enjoy it anymore. Thankfully that wasn’t the case, and I totally dug it just as I had back in 1999/2000. I forgot how many songs I really loved on this album (which makes sense given how often I played it back then). It’s a 4.5 that I’m boosting to a 5.

Its moby

I have been trying to find south side for months but couldn’t remember anny lyrics. and it was such a relief to listen to this album and hear it!!!

Very interesting album, there were a lot of songs on here that surprised me in the sense that I knew them. Definitely a classic will be going back.

Its actually great

Great album. One of the best of the era.

Play by Moby is without a doubt a very unique and well-structured album. Each song is a sonic experience and very very catchy. The blues and gospel vibes are different yet a welcome and fitting piece to the puzzles of this album. Emotion is really felt throughout the music and lyrics. The album has tons of songs and sonically they’re all connected. Whether that is a good thing is up to the listener. I found it quite repetitive after 2.5 hours but there were a lot of songs that are different enough. The lyrics are short and sweet when Moby branches out to more lyrical songs like in South Side it actually falls short in my head. Songs like honey, porcelain, and natural blues are all really well done. I did get bored halfway through. Too many songs sound so similar it feels like they’ve been put on repeat. It seems like he also gave up as many of the songs at the end have no lyrics at all. The whole album plays like a main character’s B Roll footage soundtrack which is cool.

This album fucks Eminem planted a seed in me to hate this guy in the early 00s, but I, now a more evolved human, really dig Moby. Apple gave me the 2.5 hour version of this album and I listened to all of it without looking for the earliest exit to be able to call it "listened to." Easy 5* The back half was more atmospheric but still very enjoyable. Highlights: porcelain, natural blues, bodyrock, honey, why does my heart feel so bad, south side, everloving

It really was a great pleasure to listen to this album, I enjoyed it alot. Peak 90s

Excelente fusión de electrónica. Un disco que marcó una época.

I remember this album well. Haven't listened to it in about 20 years. I heard 'Why Does My Heart' at a house party when I was 15 years old (21 years ago) and it really moved me and changed the trajectory of my listening experiences going forward. Track 9 - Machette, what a track! Smashing album.

I'm not a Moby stan but you can't avoid the groove.

unfortunately a slay

It's easy for me to write a review for this album by Moby. I listen to the album over and over again anyway. Even though I sometimes find Moby a bit difficult as a person, I still like most of his music. And I particularly like this album. Here, as with some other albums I've already noticed, I don't need to listen to it again to be able to rate it. But hey, there's always time for good music. 5/5

One of my favourite albums of all time 😀

Tää on yksi soitetuimpia levyjä mun kokoelmassa. Tasapainoinen downbeatlevy vailla vertaa. Jokainen biisi omanlaisensa hitti. En tiedä ihan mitä kaipaisin että tää olisi parempi. Hitto annetaan sit febonen ku en keksi. 5/5

Another one of my bed time albums I used to fall asleep to as a kid. An amazing meld of modern music, samples mixed in a way that brings new life to older blues genre songs, and melancholic electronica. I listened to the base album and immediately went back and listened to the deluxe version that doubles the amount of tracks on the album. This easily makes its way in to my top 10 albums of all time. 10/10

Nice throwback. Great Album

Love this Album pure vibe.

Already love this one Still do!

Absolute banger!

Classic electronic album

An easy 5. Masterful sampling and producing, an album with no skips for me and one that outside of this I return to regularly and listen to in full. Deeply nostalgic as well, the ideal listening experience for this is in my parents Commodore driving to Prahran to go to the market and Borders.

Fav: Inside Least Fav: The Sky Is Broken It’s very rare to have an album where everything song is perfect

Worth 5 stars for pulling this off. Groundbreaking

This one's a bit of a nostalgia trip, which may cloud my judgement. There was a period not long after this was released it would get played a lot in my parent's car. But a lot of the tracks hold up really well.

Cracking!

Let's play this album again and again. This album is a beautiful melody made of many styles that are mixed with talent and grace, in short modern poetry made of electro, hip hop, blues, soul, house... This album has undeniably had a lot of influences for a lot of other artists

Play is Moby's fifth album, and the work that catapulted him to international stardom. The album initially sold poorly, but through extensive licensing in film, television and advertisements, became a world-wide success. It is the most successful electronica album of all time. Moby creates downtempo soundscapes, and used extensive samples from roots and blues music. His songs are elegant and emotive; their compelling sound makes for ideal soundtrack material, and every song on the album appear in a few memorable licensing arrangements. Moby's work sounds like the late nighties and early aughts - because at the time, the songs were everywhere.

Just always loved this album. Still do

A classic!

Excellent. Cool album. I know more Moby songs than I thought. Easily a 5

I listened to this album before, and I can definitely appreciate the music more this time around. Even though I loved it before, it has gone from a 4 to a 5/5 for me now. The album starts off super strong with Honey and Find My Baby. Porcelain, which follows, is one of my favourite songs ever. The first half is filled with triphop/dance bangers like these. The second half is much more ambient and a bit slower, and I like it much more than the first time I listened. Also, great album cover.

Standouts Honey Find My Baby Porcelain Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad South Side Rushing Bodyrock Natural Blues Run On Everloving Guitar Flute & String

Never gave Moby a second thought before today. I get it now. This album fucks.

"Play" is the fifth studio album by American electronic musician Moby (Richard Melville Hall). Moby's goal was to return (from his previous album's ("Animal Rights") dark and guitar-fueled style) to electronica blending with blues and roots music. The album was a commercial success ignited by the brilliant decision to license all his songs to films, TV commercials and TV shows. It reached #1 in the UK and #38 in the US. It also received wide-spread critical acclaim and was noted as a "high watermark for populist electronica" and a "millennial roots and blues masterwork." The album begins right away with a vocal sample of Bessie Smith's "Sometimes" in "Honey." Moby got this and several other samples from listening to "Sounds of the South," a 1993 box set of folk music records complied by field collector Alan Lomax. The vocal sample is repeated. A beat and piano appear. The beats pick up and in comes a wah-wah guitar. The song eventually becomes funky. "Find My Baby" starts the same way with a vocal sample of Boy Blues' "Joe Lee's Rock" in "Find My Baby." This time the song blends into a trip-hop beat song. Acoustic and electric guitars, scratching, bass and heavy synth notes. Moby extends the notes of Ernest Gold's "Fight for Survival" in "Porcelain." It's a slower beat that picks up. His first vocals appear with "In my dreams I'm dying all the time." The song then turns ambient and dreamy. Just fantastic. He continues the beautiful combination of samples and music in "Why Does My Heart Feels So Bad." A vocal sample of a Bank Brothers' song. Layered beats, guitar and piano. "Southside" was inspired by the house music of Chicago. The wavering synth sample of the Counts' "What's Up Front That Counts." Bass and a tinny drum sample. It's a song about visiting clubs with loud music and a desensitization of the violence in the surrounding urban area. Moby brings a harder edge to "Bodyrock" combining a vocal sample by Spoonie Gee and Treacherous Three with the hard guitar sample of Gang of Four's "What We All Want." This is overlayed with synth notes. "Natural Blues" uses another notable "Sounds off the South" sample in Vera Hall's "Trouble So Hard" which gets repeated throughout the song. You could say most these songs are formulaic with a vocal sample, a beat and piano/synth notes, kicks in layering multiple beats, the samples, synths and other instruments and eventually ends up in a downtempo, ambient or other electronic style. But, damn, he does this so well in so many good songs. There's a great job of emotionally building up the songs. I agree with the critique that it's hard to classify a lot of these songs; he's blending or fusing blues, roots, industrial and rock with downtempo, ambient and electronic music. Yes, this album is overly long (over 60 minutes) with the second mostly his ambient and downtempo instrumentals that probably demands a second album. But, the sheer number of high-quality songs makes this a great record that's held up very nicely.

When this album started, I was sure I was going to hate it. But, each track just got stronger and stronger, and the second half is just incredible. Also the perfect soundtrack to storm watching as a tornado warning went into effect 15 minutes into this album

Used to listen to this album a lot, but somehow completely forgotten about. Still holds up though.

Three songs in and I'm not sure how I feel about it. It does sound good but most of the music sampled makes me wanna go and listen to the original recordings of great African-American traditional blues music. Moby does add an interesting twist to it and I'm glad he brought some of these recordings to my attention. The second half of the record feels like a different record. It's packed with very atmospheric electronic landscapes with a lot of spoken word by Moby. I'm definitely intrigued and I might give it a few more spins.

I already knew some of the songs, but the whole thing is overwhelming

One of my favorite all time albums

Fantastic.

Its unusual for an album to have 8 singles, it's even more unusual for them all to be known, and even more unusual for all of them to be great. I would find it hard to pick a favourite single, maybe I'd go Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad. Of the instrumental non singles, Everloving is beautiful. Rushing is another great instrumental, lovely piano riff beautiful. These little parts stitch the whole thing together

Did not listen, I know this album front to back, its never left regular rotation. Great album!!

Amongst my favourite albums from the 90s. Obviously sampling had been done for a long time, but this felt new. The mix between these early songs and electronica works seamlessly. If you get the chance check out the Reprise album he did recently with modern day singers performing with him. 5/5

Staple

A classic album stacked with great songs. It has an energy unlike any other album I know. It has electronica beats, blues and soul samples, and big pop hooks. The production is immaculate too. I also think this is the sort of album anyone could love. I could see it being an entry point into electronica for a lot of people. It’s great, accessible music. Great album cover too.

The album so far that I know best, still hadn't listened to it for a while though. I'd forgotten how good this album was, just consistently great, with a similar tone that still differentiates songs. So good that no one really pays attention to Moby's work besides this.

Universally cool

Love it

This album starts on such an energetic high note and slowly fades to blissful ambiance. Loved it.

If things were perfect y The Sky Is Broken, es Trip-hop, sin más. Everloving, Guitar Flute and String e Inside, ambient.

A very very good album, Porcelain incredible

One of my faves

Really interesting. Bodyrock was a vibe

This was great. Melodic, funky in places, super groovy and just an awesome listen. Even had some awesome smooth atmospheric stuff in the b-sides on YT Music. Five stars.

Love this album I’ve got it in my car

Already heard this before and loved it. Never knew it was featured in this list. Good to hear this again. Songs like porcelain and natural blues are really soothing to hear

I had this album and played it a fair amount back in its height of popularity. I've loved revisiting it. It came out at a time when I had just graduated college, with life and adulthood spread out before me like a blank canvas, and I'd probably consider this part of my life soundtrack at that time. What Moby was doing felt fresh and interesting and inspiring and emotional. He creates beautiful soundscapes in songs like Everloving, Inside, Porcelain and Guitar Flute & String, but then has total bangers on here too, like Machete and Bodyrock and South Side (such a great song!). And then you've got the fun little ditties like Honey and Run On. Some pretty great variety, and I find the music behind the lyrics to be the star here. The lyrics he writes are great though too, they're just sometimes repetitive -- it's the soulful beats he puts together that give this music its life. Play is almost like a storybook, and feels like an explorative journey of the human spirit through its beauty and pain. It feels meaningful and nourishing, love it!

Simply stunning.

Fabulously chill

9.5/10

I get that it's a little dated sounding now and it was in so, so many commercials but this album rules. It's possibly the best sequenced album of all time. Starts real hype and then gets darker and more moody.

Great, classic album!

Okay, get this. I had a truly terrible day on Thursday. But in the car I heard Natural Blues on the local alt station and it brightened my mood a little. Then at 10 p.m. I submitted my rating for the day and saw that THIS was going to be the next album. Out of the 1,089 albums on this list... Are you kidding me!? The universe has a sense of humor, I tell ya. This felt deeply healing to me. I understand this might be a love-it-or-hate-it thing, but I'm firmly in the "love it" camp.

I have a soft spot for this album. It was on the playlist when I was really discovering music for myself, and it’s still just so cool and unique.

Super nice album.

I just love it

Absolutely brilliant!!!

10/10 One of the most listenable albums ever. 2/28/2025

One of my favourite electronic albums. Funky soulful pumping. Sample heaven. Some really clean stuff.

One of my favorites

Sheer class. Smooth, haunting, creative. Superb

What an experience of an album. For being electronic this still had a little bit of everything. There were few songs on this album that I didn’t enjoy, I’ve already downloaded it for listening to on flights. The first two songs in Honey and Find My Body were both great and Find My Body reminded me of Hozier at times. While it was electronic/house, there were times throughout this album such as rushing (great piano), everloving, and guitar flute that all bring in acoustic styles to the electronic space that was a great blend. Also, if I didn’t know, Everloving could literally have been a Chris Calhoun recording and I never would have questioned a thing. I was not surprised when I discovered that Moby helped out on the Jason Bourne soundtracks as I recently watched those and Machete reminded me of those movies. The second half of the album has great almost mellow, electronic songs in summer, flying foxes and sunspot that all shine in unique ways and while they’re the same genre, none of the songs felt repetitive and each new song brought a new listening experience. It was at this time during the listen that I went on a walk and as the sun was setting in my day, The Sun Never Stops Setting came on and that was an otherworldly experience for me. I stopped my walk for a second to look around and take in nature and the sunset as I listened to the song. (Unfortunately it was followed up by the significantly worse Micronesia but they can’t all be winners. This was a 2 and a half hour journey that I loved almost the entire part of. Whether I am working and need something in the background, on a drive with my windows down, on a plane going to some event or destination, this has been added to my repertoire and I will be listening to this again.

Always struggle whether to give 4 or 5 stars - I could really go either way and really don’t even now as a write this what I’ll end up giving it. Honey, Bodyrock and South Side were the standouts for me.

This is #day178 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... it's a bleak Sunday morning in Lviv, 0°C outside, February 2nd. I'm watching my wife read a book, and what better soundtrack for this moment than Play? It’s wild to think this was meant to be his last album, yet it ended up becoming his breakthrough. Play is the epitome of Moby's style, an intricate mix of electronica and downtempo, layered with blues and roots music samples. Those raindrop-like house/dream trance keys are pure aural bliss... If I had to pick highlights, I'd say "Porcelain," "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?," and "Natural Blues." I'm also a fan of the follow-ups, 18 and Hotel... that's classic Moby for me. Of his more recent work, Everything Was Beautiful And Nothing Hurt stands out, where he revisits his musical roots again. This album is a solid 5 out of 5 for me. Lucky to own it on an original UK cassette. Looking forward to #day179.

A great album, with every song memorable in one way or another. I was genuinely surprised how many songs I knew from this, and enjoyed getting to know the others too. Will always make me think of the XFM show, and how Ricky Gervais loves Moby but hates his music. Couldn't disagree more. 03/02/25

Chill, but innovative and melodic.

Play has managed to become one of my favorite electronic albums. The album mainly employs a lot of different styles including ambient, techno, and even rock in some places with all the guitars. And somehow, every single element is handled beautifully with the songs managing to remain upbeat and catchy and having enough ambiance to make the album sound otherworldly. The album also managed to have very different sounding songs which kept me interested even at a 63 minute runtime and the songs still managed to fit well together. This is an absolutely beautiful album. Best Song: Bodyrock Worst Song: My Weakness

jeder Track ein Banger!!!

Effortless cool.

A classic

DANG. It didn't save the review. Classic Album. Over-familiar, but it IS excellent.

Fantastic record. Brings a smile to my face every time I listen to it.

Loved it, fun, easy listening

Like a lot of people I played this album to death back in the day and haven’t listened to it for years. It still sounds great and I really enjoyed revisiting this one.

I'm giving this 5 stars. It has been an incredibly enjoyable listening experience. A very soothing and relaxing album beautifully put together.

I begrudgingly give this 5 stars as I generally hate this genre of music but listening with an open mind I can acknowledge it as the best of the best of what it has to offer. I generally hate when the link from this site brings me to an extended version of an album but in this case 2 of the bonus tracks are stand outs and it isn't just filler.

Well, it became mainstream so I guess that means it *is* mainstream music, but the mix of ambient electronica, blues, gospel, techno and even grunge is pretty unusual. Extracting danceable grooves from these elements is one thing but getting soul and genuine emotional release in there is another. Somehow it just works, and… I dig it. Like, quite a lot really - more than I realised previousIy. The way the second half descends into a long stretch of mostly quiet, ethereal instrumentals is also strange for such a big-selling record, and while I don’t mind those, it’s clearly the stacked-with-hits front end of the album that accrues all the stars. 4.5

MAGISCH: Einsteigen, losfliegen. Unwiederholbar.

Really solid. 8 singles. I remember this being a huge release and got a copy of it from my local F.Y.E after hearing Natural Blues on the radio. The first 8 tracks are back-to-back monsters that show a complete mastery of music production. They exist outside of genre and all vary from each other. I easily listened to the 2 hour 34 song complete recording editions.

Chill times, relief from Christmas music, building up to new years. I like the atmosphere and relaxed vibes it had. We had a lot of memory tickles in people's brains asking what album it was.

Money is gold

I came to this album a few years later than most and then played it nonstop in my car for a year or so... Masterful blend of voices, songs, and sounds.

Did not use a private session for Spotify. I have this CD somewhere, probably a lot of people do. Lots of hits on this album. Generally, I am not a fan of dance/EDM but I like this album, so Moby did something awesome. I was happy to hear they didn't change "South Side" to the one with Gwen Stefani pointlessly whining over it with her nasal drone.

Fresh (at the time) sound, some great tracks. There's a reason so many of these tracks were used in movies and commercials, and got constant radio play.

I've always been a little embarrassed by how much I love this shit. Cold, sterile, 'car commercial music,' offensively decontextualizing and neutering blues & roots music, but like... liiiike. Oh well

So far my only review in spanish (creo). 10/10

AMAZING

This was everywhere for a couple of years and was definitely part of my life soundtrack. It reminds me of driving with friends and definitely digs into the whole nostalgia vibe. I had a really good time listening to this after so many years.

Classic.

Perfect study album

Ye Gods, a 2.5 hour long album is the version I listened to. Gotta say, it is so gentle and groovy and relaxing it just made my day way easier around the house. Even as an extended album every song just flows together so amazingly well. I've been a fan of Moby since I was around 13 and heard "Rain". So, while the beat and effect choices seem a little clunky and dated, the language of the music retains a charming cohesiveness that is pure Moby. Really, I hadn't ever given this (or many) of his albums a full and focused "Dark Side Of The Moon" style listen. I am so glad that I did. I'll come back to this again and again...albeit probably the regular album.

Loved it when it came out. Still good.

Yeah! Heard this album a million times and it still predominantly slaps. There are a few lulls but it's hard to fault.

God I forgot how good Moby is. Delicious

The songs from this I had heard before are still good, but all the rest of the tracks on the album are better than them to me. I'm sad that I slept on this album when it came out.

There are so many reasons why this album should be on this list, but at the end of the day it's just a great album

No stellar technique or virtuosity, quite simple musical collages, but ones that evoke powerful emotion. The extra tracks are better than I expected! This one does it for me 4.75

This is a FANTASTIC album! Second song in I knew I was gonna love this one. It starts off as an electronic party album with some groove, and ends by being a trippy, acoustic guitar, folksy, Pink Floyd-y kinda vibe. Loved it. Haven't finished it yet, still on the 3rd last song, but I'm gonna definitely listen to it again.

So many songs I recognized. It was great music to listen to while going for a walk, uplifting and mellow. I'm glad Moby did not end up getting stomped by Obie. Favorite songs were Porcelain Natural Blues 9/10

There's a reason every song was licenced for some product or other - they are all excellent. What an incredible album.

I knew I knew some stuff by Moby, specifically off this album in particular, but he was never an artist I ever did a deep dive on. I was surprised by how many songs I already knew off this album just by having existed in the world. Definitely used a lot for soundtracks and probably even commercials over the years. Realistically some probably would come up on electronica radio mixes on streaming services back in the day when this came out and I was listening to those. Anyway, in my opinion this album holds up. It's held in high regard for a reason and one of the few electronica albums I feel like has overly broke big into the mainstream. At least to my awareness! This is smooth and relaxing while still having enough of a beat to groove to. I love the fusion of blues into the electronica. Also love the samples he picked and how he utilizes them. Realistically a 4.5 for me for reasons I can't quite define at the moment but I am going to go ahead and round up to a 5.

i like: whispering wind summer i really like a lot of this album great for focus/background music

Przesłuchana , do kupienia

I keep on knowing some of these songs, i love this album!

I wasn't excited about seeing this album. I remember this album because it was everywhere you turned - tv shows, commercials - EVERYWHERE, and Moby kind of became a bit of an over-exposed joke. I was even less excited when I saw that the album is 2.5 hours long, which, no. Turns out the album was combined with a B-sides, so I found out where the original album stopped and committed to that - a still long but much more manageable 63 minutes. And it's terrific. Like, it's very, very, VERY good. The mixes, the vocals, the samples are all perfect and give this album an incredibly upbeat yet still chill vibe that is outstanding. I think it's aged awesomely well, and to be honest, I probably like it more now, 24 years later, with fresh ears. If you like electronica, especially downtempo, you're gonna like this. I'm not sure it's *quite* the rarified air of a 5 star as I think a song or two could have been trimmed, but it's a 4.5 for sure.

as always bringin some good vibes

Hypnotic

Moby! An amazing album.

Aside from Porcelain and Honey I'd never listened to this album. It flows so nicely. Lovely, warm beats I'd happily listen to again.

So happy to see this album come up. I have used three of Moby’s songs in my yoga classes: Porcelain, Natural Blues and Everloving. Each time I put Moby in a playlist, I have students come up after class to ask who I played.

Bit of a shocker really, but I ended up loving this. I have to admit some preconceived (and apparently inaccurate) bias against Moby, since I assumed that he was somewhat of a one trick pony artist who rode the wave of success by taking advantage of the latest recording techniques and mixing them with appropriated “field recordings” of African-Americans singing traditional blues & R&B. In fact, after the first song or two I was still in a bit of an eye-rolling critical state… but then by “Natural Blues” I was hooked. You can tell Moby has a DJ background; he definitely takes you on a journey through the course of the album. I was moved at moments; the sequencing of the album and the storytelling elements were tight. I get now why this was considered a masterpiece at the time. Give me more Moby like this!

Masterpiece from start to finish. Just loved every moment of this album. A must own in my opinion.

Great piece of art, it takes you places while hearing it :) Would recomment to anyone who wants to listen something unique.

This was a revolutionary mix of black roots and electronica music that still holds up today.

This album is tied to so many memories of my father and me when I was just little thing. and its just a really good album in general. it mixed DJ with different types of music and I don't even know how to describe it its just amazing.

Fabulous

Maravilhoso

Very nice.

I want to play with Moby.

Ta bueno

So many jams.

Free the Gwen Stefani version of "South Side"!

Played regularly since the day of release

Loved it, discovered some songs that I never knew were used by some artists as samples

That was fun! Keeping it on the phone for biker rides

Wow. Dude made some hits.

BL: Aware of "Porcelain" on this album, I've always intended to listen to this album the whole way through but never had a chance to. So will be good to finally hear it AL: This was an even better listen than I expected. I've almost become a little bit dull to "Porcelain" after all the years of listening to it, I forgot how much of a master Moby is at sampling and building complex ambient and yet danceable soundscapes. Truly one of the greats, its a shame he is such a creep. FT: "Find my Baby", "Porcelain", "Why does my heart feel so bad", "If things were perfect", "The sky is broken" 5/5

Excellent chill out album

I obviously hate electronic dance music, I obviously bought this album like everyone else. It still sounds good, it's seeped into the consciousness of my brain and it is as good as this terrible genre will ever get.

Not my favourite by Moby

Man, this album...1999. What an interesting year that year was. Porcelain is such a pretty song. Why Does My Heart Feel so Bad.. another beautiful song on here. Such a great album here. 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this album. It’s very much a product of the late 90s/early 00s, but still has a great sound. I added several tracks to my album project playlist and a chill mix playlist. The album is a nice mix of dance tracks and chill tracks and makes great background music for working or hobbies. Favorites: Everloving, Rushing Rating: 5

fun, energetic

This was cutting edge EDM. 5/5

5 out of 5

Absolutely blown away by how much of this album I recognized without thinking I'd listened to it.

Good album

Freaking obsessed. Makes me feel like I’m in the coolest 90s teen film ever made

Moby, you bald, tattooed, tofu eating musical genius!!

Have always LOVED this album!!

Kinda drops by the end but for a few years this was the background radiation of my life. Good stuff.

This was already on my no skip playlist, bangers galore

Moby - Play This is one of my favorite albums from the 90s. Moby and Fatboy Slim were big in the late 90s with dueling electronica albums. I can put this on and find myself lost inside the music. 5/5

The master of vibes! Moby seriously knows how to craft an album.

Absolutely excellent. Loved the whole vibe of the album.

Despite being into almost nothing aside from punk when this came out, I bought this album off the strength of a few of the singles. I didn’t love the whole album, but appreciated a lot of it. Having not listened to this in probably 20 years, we can consider this a fresh listen. I was nervous going in because the Fatboy Slim album the list previously gave me was so painfully repetitive. I was blown away by this album top to bottom though. It’s so well made and nothing repeats to the point of aggravation. This is masterful work. Probably the best compliment I can pay this album is that I’m voluntarily going to listen to the version that includes all the b-sides and adds an hour to the runtime.

Sweet music

All reviews from anybody who didn't give this album a 5 should be hidden from the site since they clearly are not mentally capable.

Hey Moby you so fine, you so fine you blow my mind. Hey Moby!

One of my faves

Used to play this album on repeat back in the day. Not every song is a 5 but enough are and I’m nostalgic so I’ll give it a 5

I actually didn't anticipate enjoying this album so much after not having listened to it in at least 20 years. About 8 of the tracks were immediately recognisable and absolute bops. The sampling work is incredible, especially considering how much effort would have gone into finding some of these records at the time before mp3 and the internet media. Nothing is worse for a song than to go unheard and yet here we have these songs finding a new audience. Beautiful.

Discazo

so many bangers on this, very unique style with old samples mixed with kinda of slow beats

Lyrics: "Play" is often celebrated for its minimalist and repetitive lyrical content. Moby strategically employs short phrases and samples to create a hypnotic and mantra-like effect. The lyrics often revolve around themes of alienation, spirituality, and the human condition. The use of samples, largely sourced from old gospel and blues recordings, adds a layer of authenticity and historical resonance to the album. While some critics argue that the simplicity of the lyrics may lack depth, Moby's intention seems to be creating a visceral and emotional experience rather than relying on intricate wordplay. Pros: The simplicity of the lyrics enhances the album's accessibility and contributes to its emotional impact. The use of samples adds a unique and nostalgic dimension. Cons: Some may find the repetitive nature of the lyrics lacking in complexity, and those seeking more profound narrative depth might be left wanting. Music: "Play" is a masterclass in sonic diversity. Moby seamlessly blends electronic elements with traditional instruments, creating a rich and textured sound. The album covers an expansive musical spectrum, from the pulsating beats of "Porcelain" to the haunting melodies of "My Weakness." Moby's ability to traverse genres while maintaining a cohesive sonic identity is a testament to his skill as a producer and composer. Pros: The musical diversity keeps the album fresh and engaging throughout. Moby's incorporation of various genres showcases his versatility as a musician. Cons: Some may argue that the broad range of styles makes the album feel disjointed, lacking a clear thematic thread that ties the tracks together. Production: The production quality of "Play" is often cited as one of its strongest attributes. Moby's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the seamless integration of samples and electronic elements. The album's success lies in its ability to balance the raw, unpolished nature of the sampled vocals with the polished, modern sound of electronic production. Moby's innovative sampling techniques, where he lifts vocals from old blues and gospel recordings, contribute to the album's distinctive character. Pros: Impeccable production elevates the album, creating a cohesive and immersive listening experience. Moby's sampling techniques set "Play" apart from other electronic albums of its time. Cons: Some purists may argue that the heavy reliance on samples diminishes the originality of the work, as it leans heavily on existing recordings. Themes: "Play" explores themes of spirituality, existentialism, and the human experience. Moby draws on his personal struggles and emotions, infusing the album with a sense of introspection. The juxtaposition of electronic beats with soulful, often melancholic vocals creates a unique tension that adds depth to the thematic exploration. The album, at its core, seems to be a contemplative journey through the complexities of life. Pros: The thematic depth adds emotional resonance to the album, transforming it into a more profound listening experience. Cons: Some listeners may find the themes too abstract or obscure, desiring more explicit storytelling or thematic clarity. Influence: "Play" undeniably left an indelible mark on the music industry. Its success not only catapulted Moby into mainstream recognition but also played a crucial role in popularizing electronic music. The album's innovative use of sampling and its ability to bridge the gap between electronic and traditional genres influenced a generation of musicians. The widespread use of "Play" tracks in various media, including commercials and movies, further solidified its cultural impact. Pros: The album's influence on the electronic music scene and popular culture is undeniable, leaving a lasting legacy. Cons: The overwhelming success of "Play" may have overshadowed some of Moby's subsequent work, with listeners and critics often comparing his later releases to this groundbreaking album. Conclusion: "Play" by Moby stands as a monumental achievement in electronic music, showcasing the artist's ability to fuse diverse genres into a cohesive and emotionally resonant masterpiece. The album's impact on both the music industry and popular culture cannot be overstated. While some may critique its simplicity or argue about thematic cohesion, these elements contribute to the album's accessibility and enduring appeal. "Play" remains a timeless classic that continues to captivate listeners and inspire a new generation of musicians, securing its place in the pantheon of influential albums.

fuuuuuuuck yeah brutalan album. 3 pjesme Porcelain, Why does my heart feel so bad i Natural blues

Always a great listening experience.

Banger alert. Great album all the way through. He doesn't get enough credit

I remember buying this and listening to it on loop when it first came out. In fact, so many songs off this album were used in films, TV shows and adverts at the time: society was almost saturated with it!

These guys are tons of fun. I had to look up what exactly this music is, and the Wikipedia blurb is great: "...according to Spin magazine's Will Hermes, Play was "the high-water mark for populist electronica" and a "millennial roots and blues masterwork",[7] while John Bush from AllMusic said it balanced Moby's early electronica sound with the emergent breakbeat style of techno." Electronica. Cool. Memorable songs: Honey, Find My Baby, Bodyrock,

I did not expect to like this album but I REALLY did! I loved the very strong beats and bass as well as the repetition -- I liked listening for new things in the music through each repetition of a bass line or melodic phrase.

great album, brings a low mood up. early innovator of techno. early moby comes together here in a catchy way. though a bit repetitive, it somehow stops itself from ever being boring.

Genre: Pop/ Electric Instruments: 3/5 Modern Translation: 4/5 Dance Potential: 2/5 Listening Location: At my desk + commute to work. Favourite Song: Honey + Find My Baby + Porcelain Made me feel: I loved this diverse album. The start of the album made me bop my head and it got slower/more instrumental as it progressed. This is the only album that I revisited because I wanted to after listening to it for this list and am surprised it’s 24 years old (1999).

amazimg. solid beginnin to end

Tolles abwechslungsreiches Album mit vielen Highlights. Pfiffige Rocksongs und tolle Synthy Sequenzen. Meine Favoriten sind “Naturaral Blues”, “Why did my ..” und “Porcelain”. 😊. Ein wahrer hidden Star.

Top shit

Great record. 9/10

Ok I was not expecting to like this at all since it's electronic but I absolutely loved this album, it'll probably be my go-to study music if I want something without too many lyrics. It isn't the harsh almost dubstep-type electronic I was expecting and I really like that. Really, really nice actually knew a couple of the songs he sampled from which made those more enjoyable. I do wish this site would stop giving double albums though since they are obnoxious and nobody wants to sit down and listen to 29 songs.

Classic

3/1001 Not overly familiar with Moby going in aside from "South Side" which happens to be on the album. So I was expecting a more electronic overall sound, but was surprised by a variety of bluesy songs. I didn't always take notice of the instrumental tracks, but made sure to tag "Inside" as a future playlist piece. A comfortable listen, that really went well with the rainy day outside. Favorite track: "South Side" 4.5/5

One of my favourite house records

This album is quality, songs like flower and porcelain changed my life.

Love run on. Really fun album

This was a go to CD when i just wanted to put something on to chill to. It all came back to me as I listened to it for the first time in probably 20 years. Always loved Natural Blues and Porcelain. I am not a huge fan of electronica but i genuinely like his approach to it. It was nice to be "reunited" with his record and I think it will be in my rotation again! (This time the Play plus B sides edition.)

Very good album. No bad tracks on this one.

Super Album, welches ich schon seit langer Zeit in meiner Sammlung habe.

Stunning work of art.
