3 Stars. I didn't find this terribly interesting. I like that it's instrumental, but the keyboard sounds dated. Steve Cropper's guitar work redeems it a little
Jaunty, but a bit cloying after a while.samey.
It's great as an instrumental album, but listening to it actively doesn't appeal to me that much. Good background music though.

On one hand, it's the dictionary definition of "classic"; on the other, it fails to deliver as an album. Not that this takes anything away from the awesomeness of the title track.
Favorite tracks: Green Onion Rinky Dink Twist and Shout
Enjoyable, but nothing terribly groundbreaking here. This band was the house band for Stax records and contributed to the Memphis soul sound. However, on their own, the music is just a bit too sterile for me. These players are tremendously talented and are great at what they do, but the music is just not as alive as I would like
A fun album the title track is unmatched and sometimes the rest of the album seems like filler. But the band COOKS! 3 🌟
Good, instrumental, fairly recognizable
I like Green Onions. pretty solid album, but didn't knock my socks off.
Pretty cool instrumental album- I had no idea how much of their stuff has been sampled over the years!
Title tracks usage in films would lead you to believe this was more upbeat pop but a more jazz oriented genre.
I'm familiar with this one. It's pretty cool. Booker T's electric organ is peachy. For both positive and negative reasons, you can tell these guys were the house band at Stax. Positively, they already play great together, even though this was their first album; and you can hear their larger contribution to soul, blues and rock embodied in this short album. Negatively, this instrumental album, once you get past the amazing and influential title track, does often sound like a backing band, waiting for a vocalist to show up. I suspect this album was chosen for the 1001 list entirely on the basis of the title track, which should certainly be on a list of singles to hear before you die. 2.5 - good music, but not really as an album...
Would prefer lyrics, but sounded good
A really nice instrumental jazzy blues album. Great for background listening. It's main failing however, is that apart from the great title track, the tracks are completely forgettable. If all of them were of the quality of the title track this would easily be a 4 or 4.5. Instead this is a solid 3.5 for me. Good experience to hear it once, but won't listen again.
Instrumental album. Nice vibe for older music. It is, however, something, my grandpa would be listening to.

I, II, III, and Physical Graffiti all make appearances on the 1001 albums list. I love me some Led Zeppelin, but that seems like overkill. Especially because LZIII was critically panned when it came out, damned both for being less aggressive than its predecessors (Melody Maker) and for not being substantially different (Lester Bangs). Perhaps this album was included because it foreshadows Led Zeppelin's later work--Arabic modes and English folk songs both make their first appearance on LZIII. But I'm going to ignore LZIII's place in music history. Is it any good? The leadoff track, Immigrant Song, is relentless and menacing, driven by a staccato pedal point and Robert Plant's double-tracked vocals. A prominent tri-tone and a bridge that leads to nowhere, ending on a flatted 6th, contribute to the track's edge. Friends is a spooky modal tune, feature a flatted 5th and a minor 2nd. The arrangement is both sparse and ingenious, with strings handling a countermelody while Jimmy Page pounds out a rhythmic drone on the bottom. The song ends on a gorgeous synth drone from John Paul Jones, which leads into the next tune, Celebration Day. Here, Jimmy Page repurposes a riff from Robert Johnson's Terraplane Blues, but completely makes it his own. The chorus is pure pop. John Bonham's pounding drums seal the deal. Since I've Been Loving You is one of Led Zep's patented supercharged blues workouts--they wring out every last drop of emotion and intensity from the tune. Out On The Tiles is anchored by an extended Jimmy Page riff, woven together with Plant's vocal. The band is killer throughout the first half of LZIII. What guitarist Jimmy Page lacks in precision, he makes up for in taste, tone, and arranging prowess. John Bonham was the most powerful rock drummer of the era; sorry, Keith Moon. And the band's secret weapon is John Paul Jones, who plays keyboards with consummate taste, as well as bass. The second half of LZIII is less bombastic, which presents a problem for some fans, but is it really the weak link that critics claim it to be? Gallows Pole is a powerful rendering of an old English folk tune, driven along by mandolin, banjo, and John Bonham's kickass drums. Bron-Y-Aur Stomp has a more basic arrangement, but it's effective nonetheless. The softer tunes, Tangerine and That's The Way, are cunningly arranged and cast a melancholy spell. The weakest tune in the bunch is Hats Off To (Roy) Harper, which is 4 minutes of raunchy blues slide guitar paired with Robert Plant's processed vocals, in which he seemingly randomly spouts snippets of various blues lyrics. But even there, I appreciate how Jimmy Page recasts a traditional blues into something contemporary, utilizing the simplest of means. So, what's the verdict? I personally prefer Led Zep's harder side, but they pull off their more acoustically oriented stuff with skill, too. I prefer I, II, IV, and Physical Graffiti, but LZIII is pretty damned good.
Not my typical musical style, but I found myself grooving to it, nice!
That first hook comes at you like a brick wall to the face. Second song is part of a Wu-Tang sample... oh shit I’m in love. 4th song is... is... unapologetically, the same as the first song, but slower. Huh, maybe I’m not in love. Some sweat, saccharine keys in this album, just lulling you. Hard to hate on something with such loungey good vibes. It’s great background music. Perfect for boozing and chilling. I’d definitely buy a vinyl, but it’s a bit one note. Hmmm. Is this better than Dusty Springfield? 3
Background music and nothing more. Green Onions is a ripper.
Initially, I didn't like it too much, thinking about why these ambient songs were here in this list. However, I finished it with the opposite opinion. It is a very good album with some very good instrumental songs. It is surprisingly modern for a 1962 album.
Groovy. 5/10
I had no idea that this song I’ve been hearing my whole life is called “Green onions.” I need to Google why the hell it’s called that, but I’m probably too lazy to do that. At any rate, these onions are pretty chill and I don’t even like onions. Put this on shuffle with some albums by the Meters and that’s a pleasant Saturday afternoon backyard bbq party.
alright
i can see the appeal. some of the songs were cool and i recognised them from being sampled in newer songs.
Great smooth jamz
MMMmmm... Nice!
organ driven blues. Some themes seem to be repeated through the album, which detracts from its quality. Still enjoyed listening
I really thought I was going to like this album more than I did. The first song is incredible, but the rest of the album doesn't have much to offer. Most of the covers are a bit uninspired, and the songs tend to all sound the same 3/5
funky fresh
Decent, influential album. From a pure listening experience, the organ got a bit overused towards the end of the album
Good and fun
Very funkalicious
Pleasant working music
Instrumentalt 60’er soul/rnb, elorgel, sprød guitar, covers
I like organ and I like the blues. Both can certainly sound cheesy over the course of 12 tracks, but together the cheese cancels out and the good parts of the Hammond and the form reinforce one another. Very fun instrumental version of Twist and Shout.
The band sounds great throughout, and the title track is an all-timer. But this is mostly nice background music at a over 60’s party.
First track obvisiouly a classic. However the rest is all very background. In fact at one stage I thought I was waiting in a funeral parlour for the funeral to start.
The title track is a bit of a bop but idk who is actually asking for the rest of this album 2
Instrumental so just 2 stars good vibes though
the music begs for you to leave it in the background. elements are interesting at first glace. however, after about 10 seconds of focused listening, the brain wanders off... it's inherently interlude music: it sounds like the type of music in between the main musical numbers or when you're waiting for the main show to begin (which isn't a negative thing imo-- it sounds fine and it's well-played). but when it's entirely an album of just that, it doesn't make for a good listening session or a high-quality album. = highly repetitive and boringly inoffensive. H3.
Enjoyment: 4 Replayability: 4 Cohesion: 8 Flow/Pacing: 3 Artistic Merit: 6 Weighted Average: 4.8 Summary: A gentle blend of R&B and Soul with the spice coming from the bass and Hammond organ. Favorite Song: Green Onions Least Favorite Song: Rinky Dink Recommend? No
Hmm… too much organ.
Boring background but like good music I suppose
Respect, but not my thing
Love track one, but too much instrumental
A: ... mhmmm... eeeh dehär om NÅGONTING är hissmusik. Green onion och Stranger on the shore var helt bra. 4/5
didn't have the cricket one so i was already disappointed, then just a bit boring
ohh this one It was probably very groundbreaking but is now just elevator music
Bold, a Hammond organ cover album. The organ gets pretty/very annoying on some tracks, but over all this is a fun album for a rushed bunch of covers, knocked out to support the banging lead single. I guess it's just a massive extended B side.
Ok
I found this quite boring
Obviously the title track is unstoppable. The rest of it gets dull quickly, though. Not exactly challenging or thoughtful or experimental, and pleasant, but too much of a good thing. As usual, not as bad as the 2 I'm giving it but it's just too much and also not very much at all.
It’s also good, just not my taste. 😔
i can't say i would listen to this album again, but if i had an elevator this is the first place i would come to. very groovy.
The good but overrated title track feels like the only reason to listen to this album. There's better blues/soul albums out there.
One decent blues song followed by 11 other crap blues songs
Other than the opening of the album, there isn't really anything that recommends this.
Eka mitä piti skippailla, ihan hyvä ekat pari instrumentaalia, mut sit ei jaksanu enää...
Just not for me, seemed very ‘samey’ the whole way through.

Grandfather of rock
Elevator music
Can’t quite get to the end. It’s all the same and all downhill after track 1
now don't get me i wrong i love fucking some alliums but aside from the grossly overplayed title track, there's not a ton here to love. maybe that's a bit harsh, but even as lovely as booker t's hammond organ and steve cooper's fendercaster both are, this album feels one note. there's other good tracks like "you can't sit down" but most of this is just There. it feels like a gimmick that they've stretched out into a full record for some reason more than it does feel like an album concept (granted, early 60s, so ofc it's mostly random covers). this just sounds like half an hour of noodling.
not my thing
Meh
I didn't think I was familiar with Booker T. & the MGs, but as soon as the title track started, I recognized it as one of those songs used to signify the movie or tv show you're watching is set in the '60s (or an ad is targeting someone whose heyday was the '60s). While I enjoyed "Green Onions" and "Mo' Onions" well enough, I don't know if I needed to listen to a whole album of songs utilizing what I think may be one of my least favorite instruments, the Hammond organ.
grocery store-ass music
Album #148 Booker T. And The M.G.’s Obviously the title track is an all-timer, and the following few tracks were not on the same level, but still quite enjoyable. However, somewhere around the middle of the album it becomes really apparent that there will be no new sounds or ideas. It’s hard to say that the album drags because it’s only 35 minutes, but it certainly doesn’t leave a strong impression. It is simple and enjoyable music that is quite nice to have on in the background, but nothing more than that, really. Best Tracks: Green Onions, Rinky Dink Mo’ Onions Worst Tracks: One Who Really Loves You Score out of 10: 5.5
fav song: green onions groovy, warm, laidback 40/100
Way too much organ on this one. I liked Green Onions but quickly grew bored of the rest of it. Favorite Song: Green Onions
I understand that the authors of the "1001 Albums..." list included pieces that, to varying degrees, influenced music as a whole, but some of the entries baffle me. For example, this record. Why does the band have such a strange name? Because they don't need a proper name; they're a house band for Stax, they've backed many of their artists, Booker T. is their lead pianist, and M.G. is short for "Memphis Group." Can you imagine a record by The Late Show Band making it onto a list of the best albums? Neither can I. Although the album overall is decent, reasonably short, the organ and blues guitar duet works, and the title track has been used in so many different films and TV series that it automatically feels like a soundtrack. Did it need to be on the original list? Probably it did; it clearly inspired southern rock. Should it still be on there? The big question...
Such an staple in American blues. A bit overshadowed by its major hit, yet it remains consistent throughout. 7/10 [KEEP]
This album is chill, kind of reminds me of a glass of milk with ice. It's great for a little while, but once I've been sipping on it for more than 10 minutes, I begin to feel very disinterested in continuing to sip on it... Favorite track was the title one, Green Onions.
- The music equivalent of a hot dog - I could jitterbug to this for sure - Perfect tracks to listen to when you’re sitting in your garage on a lawn chair (in the summer)
Good background music, I’m sure it was influential for the time but I can’t see myself listening to this often
decent background music. i got nothing else to say tho
I found this mind of boring
the album cover and title track are stone cold classics. the rest - meh.
Classic soul and blues, weak for a monday
I mean fire beats but no lyrics and very repetitive music
I don't know what more to say about this record other than it's palatable.
Koko levyllinen on semisti tylsää blues-jynttäystä. Ei tää vastentahtoseks kuunteluks mee, mut ei kyl kauheesti tarjookaan mittee.
My fav: Green Onions (obviously), One Who Really Loves You (has good vibes), Comin’ Home Baby (AURA), I Got A Woman (the beat ah) I love how the name of the song actually fits the theme and the melody, very accurate. Wes Anderson could def use some of the tunes in his movies!
4/10
Lots of covers, lots of fodder for hip-hop samples, good background / elevator music but how come they didn't seem to know how to end a song properly??
If you're a fan of the Hammond organ this is the album for you
Ni tan mal animal ni tan bien ciempiés
I wanted to give this a somewhat positive review due to the iconic intro track being one of those groovy 60’s tracks you’ve heard before but don’t know the name of, but the rest of it blends to it’s detriment, because it’s almost 40 minutes of organ based instrumentals, which isn’t a bad thing, it was pretty smooth, but it’s rather simple for an entire album to be. I wanted to give it 3 stars, but i think i’m gonna have to drop it to 2 for simplicity. That said, this album feels like it defines the decade pretty well.
Green onions is a tune, these covers though - I'd rather listen to the originals. It's a nice listen and all that but just not all that. And when 'mo onions' come on you realise they really only had one riff in them.
The opening track is of course very well known and lures you in, thinking you will have a good time, however it gets monotonous very quickly with just a load of organ all over the place. It even roughly repeats the first track later on on the album as well. Very underwhelming after a really great start. 2/5
Feels like you’re at a baseball game
i like blues in general but this particular album was not so enjoyable...
The title track is an absolute classic but the rest of this just became the Hammond organ pops.
Non vocal with cool keyboards jazzy drums. It’s very 60s, not quite my style though
enjoyed more than I thought I would, as I'm usually not the hugest fan of instrumental music. the twang was a little much after a few songs, but was good background music. probably won't listen to this again.
Fine as background music, but doesn't really engage me
1.9/5 Is this a bad album? No. Is it one I'd listen too again? Probably not. Was I shocked at how many famous songs that I thought were originals, took some of these songs and made them bangers? Yes
I hate to give a low rating to something that is important and significant and musically strong, but I didn't find it very interesting and the litany of covers didn't interest me very much.
Meh, I mean obv the initial track is pretty recognisable but the rest is instantly forgettable.
I’m sure these musicians are very talented, but for me this was the most bland background music. I sort of forgot it was on while it was on.
Sorry but this is very not interesting, I'm sorry to this very important band and recording but I feel like this is not really an Album in the way that many albums were in 1962.
p56. 1962. 2 stars. One of the tightest bands in the world on top form, let down by poor material and redundant covers. The stars of the show are Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn, whilst Green Onions still remains a floor filling masterpiece 60 years on.
Pretty groovy, not too standout though. Maybe worth a few relistens.
Great music for grocery shopping
Albums I should listen to before I die, more like albums I most certainly will never stop hearing before I die. Dfinitely some of the most recognizable tunes out there. Great for movie scenes in The Sandlot, but boring by song 4.
It was fun at first but then it just kept going..
Elevator music
Me not get it?
All instrumental
2.4
Didn't hate it but it was very samey & sounded like a novelty album of movie / TV thenes
Fine
I love instrumental music, especially something this funky and groovy. My only issues are it sounds dated and the songs sort of run together with not much variety.
There is a good album buried in here somewhere, maybe if it was released a decade later with all of the production and instrumentation standards that come with it, but as it currently stands this is sub-par. I cannot stand the electronic organ, if you like it then you're in for a wild ride here. 2/5
In which a bunch of top-notch session players get together to tackle some rinky-dink rock and R&B tunes, to not much conseqence. (Title track is cool, though.)
Fun album with couple covers
I was looking forward to this. They are such a great band on so many songs. I love their Monterey performance with Otis Redding, for example. This album was bound to be great, right? Outside of the song Green Onions it’s really just fluff. Even the title track is not much more than a vibe. So it goes.
4 / 10
Immediately recognized track one. The rest was fine, but ultimately boring instrumental rock.
I'm afraid this didn't do much for me. Green onions is great but I did find the album overall to be very repetitive.
Nice but repetative.
The album that was made due to the success of one single, happy for them that they got to make this but really you're not listening to more than the song Green Onions here. Playlist Track: Green Onions
boring mais pas mauvais non plus
This is just such a underwhelming album. Apparently this album most likely was made because the title track was a huge hit, and that adds up to me. There is literally no reason why this album should be on here, the 1001 list tends to include some albums just because of the one hit wonder is apart of an album. So no this is not a album you must hear before you die. Highlight Song/s: "Rinky-Dink", "Behave Yourself" and "I Can't Sit Down"
Do you know when you like a song, your whole life and you have no idea who sang it that’s me and green onions
Interesting album - recognized the music even without lyrics . . .
4/10
Odlicna muzika ako bi isla u pozadini neke igrice tipa “make your own hamburger”, inace ide na zivce jako
I mean it’s got that one song but otherwise forgettable, as good as that one song is.
While the organ is a pleasant instrument, this album is pretty unpleasant. 2/5
The onion songs are good, the organ gets a bit.. grating eventually on the whole though.
Hey, it's that one song from all those movies! :D ... oh... oh god its all the same D:
Title track is great, and it was kinda fun to hear them do different classics under their distinctive sound, but no real reason to listen to this album past track 3 tbh
Kind of mad to think that this pre-dates the Beatles releasing Please Please Me. Can absolutely see why this is on the list, but it’s pretty dated now. Green onions still Cool AF, but the rest of the album does drag on a bit. 2
didn't expect it to be fullt instrumental,, very much a one hit wonder band it seems bc i recognized the titular song immediately ofc. but idk it's got a nice blues, organ vibe, but not more than that. again, i could see myself putting this on if i had it on vinyl but otherwise eh
After the opening track it was a bit dull
Music before the Beatles continues to be odd. Enjoyed some of it in a chilled out background kinda way.
The title track rocks! Other than that it was ok at best. A lot of covers does not make for a must listen. Ok background music but gets old fast. 2
iconic opening track but the rest is very samey and gets boring fast
Not my cup of tea, but I do know the title track which was fun to discover
Sounds like a sarcastic soundtrack. (First song is a classic though)
If you like instrumental covers of mid-50s songs by an electric organ and guitars then this is for you.
Maybe I'm underestimating the influence of these guys, but this seems to be one decent original song and a bunch of forgettable covers, including a version of Twist and Shout that's not even significant enough to be listed on the Twist and Shout Wikipedia page. Maybe that's just the state of jazz and R&B in the early 60s idk.
not exactly unpleasant but there were points where i was looking forward to the album ending. i will say though, Stranger on the Shore made me feel like i was watching charlie brown walk down the street by himself on christmas morning but as like a 45 year old divorcee and that gave me a new perspective on the blues that i really appreciate. favorite track is One Who Really Loves You
Rating: 5/10 The most 5/10 for me ever. Perfectly fine and not something I would choose to play as background music but it would suffice. One of the most iconic recognizable soundtrack songs ever and then a bunch more instrumental chill jams
Hey chatgpt please turn these popular songs into elevator music except knowing 1001albums these guys probably invented elevator music before elevators even existed YO BUT THE KEYBOARD SOLO HALFWAY THROUGH LONELY AVENUE? still a 3.5/10
more elektrische orgel please
Lost interest in this one veeeery quickly, I think because there are no lyrics. It’s okay as background music but it gets a little repetitive after a while. Sitting down and listening to the album as a whole just makes me feel like I’m waiting for something. Musically it’s fine but there’s nothing really attaching me to this album.
Pretty good, a bit funky
- no lyrics, good background noise - alright but wouldn't go out of my way to play when I want to listen to music - study music
It’s a great album, if you happen to be precisely in the mood for funky instrumental music played on a ballpark organ. The title track is a classic, and each individual song is really good, but for me it’s not my thing to listen to all of them in one sitting; it can feel a little repetitive.
We all know the song. But man it gets boring fast on an album. I think this is where elevator muzak was born. An extra star for the title track though.
The title track is an obvious classic. Other than that, I found the rest of the album quite boring tbh. 4/10
Favorite tracks: Green Onions, One Who Really Loves You, You Can't Sit Down, Comin' Home Baby Torn on this one... On the one hand: this album was really fun and had me groovin' during work. On the other: how much organ is too much organ? Because I think the answer is less than what's on this album. Rounding down simply because, even if Green Onions is a bop, the rest of the album is almost all covers and the organ gets pretty old.
The Good: Scallions! The Bad: This album is not meant to be cooked with… The Ugly: Finding out that the Chinese have purchased the MG brandname… Setting aside the title song, the rest of the album starts dragging on and on… it is the organ that just starts killing it all. Great musicians don’t always = great music 2*
My listen through this album was definitely a journey. I have to admit I did not know what I was stepping into. "Green Onions" proved to be a very well known song. This was also the case for the "Rinky Dink" characteristic tune. This kept happening for the following songs. I could not believe all these famous sounds would originate from the same instrumental album. Then, embarrassingly late, I realized with "Twist and Shout". "Green Onions" is an instrumental project that mixes originals, versions and covers. The only songs that were created by "Booker T. & the M.G.'s" are the onion songs, "Behave Yourself" and "You Can't Sit Down". These songs are great and so is the rest of the album. I am not a fan of instrumentals, but I definitely enjoyed this compilation. Disappointingly, I do not think it is fair to rate a version album higher.
Like the organ sound and jangly guitar, but tracks don't really stand out from one another.

Green Onions is great, but the album got pretty annoying pretty quickly. There's only so many hammond organ covers a man needs to hear in his lifetime.
There’s that iconic song… played twice! This album sounds pretty chill and fun, maybe too chill and fun because it comes off pretty straight and harmless. The music here is certainly well played but lacking any edge which I suppose is the point. You can certainly play this album almost anywhere and pretty much never offend anybody. I think there’s a sort of generic sound to this album though which makes it hard for me to recommend as necessary listening.
In kringloopwinkels vind je vaak vaak die '[artiest] on his Hammond' LPs.
4/10 no like
A pleasant listen although it sounds a bit old fashioned to me. But I rate it down just because I'm missing at least some vocals. 2,5
Eh..background sounds of instrumental covers - I'd rather hear the original - no denying they are musicians, but I agree w Michael - too much organ !!
I get that it’s 1961 but this is super simplistic and uninspiring. I don’t feel any soul in it. The electric organ is actually irritating. Did not enjoy and will not listen again. Green Onions is overrated. I don’t get why that song gets so much airplay.
It’s tough to love an instrumental album. I appreciate that this has had lots of samples but meh
Nakon nekog vremena baš dosadi, a to vrijeme dođe poprilično brzo.
It was fine. The first few songs were good but it dragged, even with it being a short album. The schtick got old quick
I can see how this wouldn't been cool when it came out, but it's really just generic blues jams with an organ. The slower ballads were the most interesting pieces of the album. What I can't see is myself willingly putting this on again. Culturally relevant? To an extent, sure, but it's 1 original song (that was basically completely improvised in the first place) filled out with a bunch of covers/wanking. 2/5
One bangers and lots that sound like that banger!
Another album I thought I never heard of but turns out I have. It's a testament to the influence of this album and how much it has seeped into our cultural landscape. I didn't enjoy it though. I generally dislike electric organ music and this album full of annoying noodling highlights exactly why. It sounds like inoffensive lift music. I felt like I spent thirty five minutes waiting on hold for British Gas customer services. Not my thing but clearly a very influential cultural piece so I'm glad of the listen.
Too jazzy!
This served as background music more than anything else. Flat, felt repetitive and a bit one dimensional. I kept wanting solos to develop, but each song just finds a groove for a couple of minutes then leaves. Musically it’s not bad, just uninspiring. Can’t think why this should be something folk need to hear before they die.
I just couldn’t get excited by this. I was expecting more energy, or maybe more blues funk. Disappointed.
The one songnis good. Maybe would be ok background music to set a vibe. Not one I'm going to feel a need to revisit.
alright
An album of Organ cover music. Booker T is a great player but this album wouldn’t be on here if it wasn’t for Green Onions
Green Onions is a great tune but the album isn't one I would listen to again. It sounds too much like music blaring from loudspeakers at a fair.
A little too dated for me, a little too much organ for me. Of course Green Onions track will always be a cool classic.
Fist things first they are called spring onions. Secondly I was disappointed there was no Spinaroonie or a Can You Dig It Sucka! The sound of this got a bit repetitive after about 10 minutes If this album had been as good as his wrestling then it would have scored a lot higher.
I started this quite liking it, then it all got very much the same. Electronic Organs are okay in moderation.
I recognized Greek Onion almost immediately, so it was cool to see where it originated from. And then I found out that most of the songs were covers from other musicians... whomp, whomp. As a whole, though, this album isn't objectively bad, and its impact is undeniable. It didn't hook me necessarily. It felt like I was listening to a jazz cover band at a bar, and I'll be honest, most times I tune that stuff out. 2 out of 5.
Oh yeah. Green Onions, well I know the first song and that's probs it. But it's good I don't mind a Rhodes/electric piano, cause this could've been a hard listen, but it's under 40 mins so overall quite good. Great guitar work on it and a good listen. might see what more Booker T & The M.G.s have to offer as love this kinda 60's music as great way to build my music knowledge/catalog and some nice blues to play guitar over and learn from.
its chill ig 2/5
Not really into instrumentals, but this was some solid rock music. Also nice to hear some tunes that have been sampled in later works, especially Twist And Shout. Best song: Twist And Shout
Good background music for a film, nothing else.
It's heartbraking. On one hand you want to acknoledge the influences you do recognize in many songs of that era probably ignitiated by those "hired guns". Starting with the classic Green Onions. On another hand you can't pass the fact tht these insytrumental versions are just plain dull. Some of thes tracks you wouldn't even play in an elevator, at best in an 80's video game or a funfair thyanks to the the organ. The best version of Twist and shout is the Beatles' with screamin John Lennon, while I do love Mel Tormey's "Comin' home", I can only feel half of the hamronies in this one...
yep thats definitely some hammond organ
I don’t like this band- I have always found the sound annoying.
Undeniable talent and thousands of samples have been ripped from this album, but it doesn’t move me.
Very disappointing. 2for the excellent Onions.
Green Onions is a classic. The rest of this album is fine, though I found it to be a bit boring and same-same. Would not revisit as a result.
Sounds very dated,
not bad. era-defining sound and songs. the band itself is on many classic cuts from this era which I probably prefer, but these are mostly organ-led covers. it reminds me too much of a dirty shag carpet and bad lighting though
Not my exact style but not bad. A little repetitive at times.
Green Onions is a decent track, rest of it is pretty forgettable.
I mean, it sounds like what it is... an album of backing tracks. It's not bad per se, just boring.
A Hammond organ led collection of instrumental covers, a number of them blues standards. “Green Onions” is the clear standout track, but there are a number of others that work well including “I Got A Woman” and “I Can’t Sit Down”. The band is tight and the performances are solid, but ultimately a collection of instrumental covers can only inspire so much passion. This is good background music for the right vibe, but outside of “Green Onions” its hard to get too worked up.
Kinda nice, but very dated. I do miss the vocals.
I'm a big fan of the Stax sound, and the Stax documentary is excellent. Great stuff, but this album?? Ehhh...the title track is a classic! I understand wanting to strike when the iron is hot off a hit single, but a full album of organ-led instrumental cover songs is a little much. Especially when the other original is "Mo Onions". Some of the tunes are nice, but the ballads are a little sleep-inducing. I understand why it was released, but not entirely sure why it made this list over putting another Otis Redding album on here.
This is great music for trying to impress your dead grandparents
interesting
Muzak
Man, Green Onions is one cool song. The rest of the album was fine. Not earth shattering
sounds like a surf funk album or something. Its okay, nothing special to me. listenable. would be alright to hear while swimming or something. First track is recognizable and probably the best on the album. Use of the organ is interesting but gets boring after a couple tracks. 2.5/5 for me
The title track is such a great song that I had high hopes for this. Nope…
Led Zeppelin x The Doors as an instrumental
Not my kind of thing.
Green Onions and then 11 tracks of elevator music
The song is factastic but the album struggles to ride on its coattails. Full of generic licks and predictable drum fills. Its ahead of its time in the sense that it feels like it belonga in the 80s, the decade where the blues had finally died.
Reminds me of elementary school skating rink parties. I know I dated myself.
That's a lot of organ
Not really my thing besides ‘Stranger on the Shore‘, drifted away and couldn’t differ the songs, only song I already knew ‘Green Onions’, overall 4/10
One of those albums that is no doubt culturally significant, and the melodies are good. But it sounds like lift music to the modern ear. ‘I hate the musics’ - Nina ‘I don’t hate it’ - Jude
I’ve got to own up to being really quite disappointed by this album. It’s one thing to be know for just one song, but producing an album of mostly covers plus that one song seems a waste. I can’t even increase the score for the cover shot being by the photographer for MAD Magazine. One star for a basic ‘I’ve listened to it’ score, plus another for one of my favourite tracks.
Meh.
Man, it’s super weird listening to an album with songs so iconic they’ve popped up everywhere and don’t sound original at all. I enjoyed giving the record a spin and thought there were some differences between the tracks, but when I did a bit of digging I discovered they were mostly covers—and that was a bit of a letdown.
All I can really say about this is that The Sandlot is a great movie and that's how I know the title track. It's alright, nothing too mind blowing. A record full of organ pop standards (5/10, 2/5 on this scale)
It's fine, but instrumental organ proto rock isn't my thing
Nothing from this album grab me. The song covers are not as good as the originals, I was always missing vocals.
Couple of tunes early on but album seemed to drift. Decent but not great
Title track is an all timer, but I don’t think I needed the rest of this.
Chill for in the background. I honestly didn't realize these were cover songs until Twist and Shout came on lol. I like the sound of a lot of the songs, but in some of them the organ can get a little too much. When it starts riffing it just becomes irritating, this happens more in the second half of the album to me. Perfectly fine, but not anything that feels especially grand. Very much an ok, it's mildly pleasant most of the time but that's really all I can say. If I could I'd give it 2.5/5, but I guess I'll go with 2/5, since I really dislike the organ sometimes and it all sounds very samey. favorite songs: green onions, i got a woman, one who really loves you least favorite songs: behave yourself (annoying riffing), lonely avenue (same thing here, sounds like a computer glitching), a woman a lover a friend (the riffs from 1:48 reeeaally bother me)
2.5/5 - While I can appreciate this classic sound and it is fun and easy to listen to, I can’t really get into it - just not for me. Standout tracks: - Green Onions: 4.5/5 iconic - Mo’ Onions: 3.5/5 the name made me laugh, because it literally is just Mo’ Onions
This album sounded like a band warming up before a concert. A tease of something exciting that could come but ultimately nothing.
Green Onions is a classic song, there should be a lot more of this on the record. This album as a whole though? I'd respect it more if it was original work. The 9 instrumental covers are nice and all, but 3 originals does not an album make. I think this album should be ranked higher on the talent alone, but I just can't give them a good rating for benefiting so much from others work. Obviously, Green Onions will make the 1001 playlist here.
Don't like organs but did like the music
Ah - so, this is who did that nameless song that's been featured in every movie and commercial ever. Wait a second - did they just rip off Mickey and Sylvia? What is even happening here? I guess for what this is - a background mix of mostly instrumental covers - it's OK. There's a distinct vibe they've managed to capture here, but it's a single vibe, and active listening to it for over 30 minutes gets repetitive and dull fast.
I like the title track, the rest of it is OK, but I like lyrics a lot. 2.25/5 stars
Green onions is definitely a classic, but cant say i knew much beyond that. I think my general mood throughout the album was boredom. Everything was technically good but just didn’t move me. In particular their version of Twist and shout just put me in mind of a fairground organ tune.
Having already established that I’m not a fan of albums which are purely instrumental, this was never going to score well from me. “Green Onions” is obviously the track that is most well known, but opening with it meant I lost interest quite quickly after that.
4/10 Top 3 tracks: 1. Green Onions 2. Comin’ Home Baby 3. Rinky Dink
Green Onions is a certified stone cold classic. Pretty much everything else here is a snooze.
Huh, so that’s where that organ is from.
Only knew the title track so i had high hopes. A bit disappointed by the lack of creativity on the rest of the album. Fine background music but that’s it
The title track is a classic blues song that still sounds incredible. But the rest of it sounds like baseball game organ music. Also it's a bad sign when you're already doing a reprise of the title track in TRACK FOUR.
This 60s Rock album sounds so generic, it's almost a parody in itself. It's not that bad, but also not something I would return to. 2/5
Very recognizable sound bites but like mid
The music is okay but I much prefer Booker T and the MG's when they add a vocalist. 2 stars or D+.
How many songs can you have that sound like you are watching a live sporting event? Hell even "Green Onions" is like THE song while you need to watch the shuffle on the big screen. Also there are minimal differences between that song and "Mo' Onions". We love a motif, but c'mon...This album was not bad per say, but it all kinda started to sound the same to me. "Twist and Shout" was fun and that song always makes me smile, but give me The Beatles. Liked Songs: "Green Onions" , "I Got a Woman" , "Twist and Shout" , "Behave Yourself" , "You Can't Sit Down"
liked songs: Oh, it's that song. Neat. I think two songs with onions in the title is too many. Not a whole lot of anything interesting going on. There's only so many times in a row you can listen to a 12 bar blues. 2
I need lyrics.
This was OK, but apart from the title track everything else seemed a bit... empty? Like something was missing.
2/5
Cool title track, but knowing this whole album exists because of it defines its rating. 5/10
All sounds a bit dated and ‘Austin Powers’ now. Quite repetitive. Enjoyed Mo Onions though as a variation on the famous track!
Can’t deny the stand out first track. The rest felt a bit samey. Ok but not great
Quite pleasant background music at times and cheap hotel lobby music at others.
Pleasant enough background music but not much more to it. I have heard some great tracks by Booker T. but none are on this album.
Man this album was fucking boring
Iconic title track, wouldn't relisten to whole album though
Their signature melody is totally ruined by commercial appearances. Everytime I hear it my head is filled with underwear models. Disturbing
I'm sorry but this is such a boring album. There's hardly a single song with interesting melodies, changes, harmonies, or even rhythms. Just forgettable track after forgettable track. It sounds like what your uncle who loves "The Blues"" would say is "REAL music", and that music nowadays has no soul or sm bs Even the extremely famous title track sounded a lot less cool than the first time I heard it It's not like it's completely unlistenable, but I for sure don't want to listen to it when there's music in the same genre that's 100 times better and less bland 4/10
Groovy. Fun. Shallow. Pure jam band. 2.5
A lot of the songs sound the same and there are some questionable quality of guitar and organ playing. Didn't mind Behave Yourself.
It's quite boring, unless you play the organ, wich you probably don't, or maybe i'm Just out of fashion,i dunno
Although groundbreaking at the time and a very unique style. Has become dated and fairly repatative.
Crafted perfectly for some goateed white dude in a bowling shirt to talk over while drinking coffee in 1996. Absolutely inessential
Absolute banger for track 1 (title track obviously) - but the rest is a bit of a let down. Either slight rehashes of Green Onions, or groovy instrumentals ideally suited to Austin Powers montages of him trying on increasingly fanciful outfits before finally turning to the camera with a 'yeah baby'
Onions have layers and of course it’s a classic. Twist and Shout is a fun one mid way, but overall feels quite samey and I found myself losing focus on it as it went through.
Lille 2er.
Okay. Not too excited by it
Not unpleasant but could with some lyrics after a while.
I just can't get behind an album full of baseball organ instrumentals, especially when they're covers of songs that are iconic on their own. No wonder they're a one-hit wonder
Ok
Cultura musical principalmente.
first artist that i've never even heard of. let's see. oh okkkkkk i like these instrumentals but i feel like something's missing. i don't know. it's very blues, which is not a style of music i'm a huge fan of. I like "mo'onions"! prefer the beatles version, but it's nice to know where it came from! this is just really not my thing haha. glad other people enjoy it though! overall, this was really not my cup of tea. at a certain point it became a slough to get through. but i do understand and admit that blues is just not my style of music. there's nothing necessarily wrong here, it just doesn't speak to me at all. and my rating reflects that.
One great song and the rest okay
OK background music but almost bingo Hall like. 2/5
It’s light. It’s fun. It has some tasty guitar licks. It also reminds me of something for the old timers at the North Pier in Blackpool. I didn’t like it much. I can see how it influenced southern rock, and there is a real bluesy feel on a lot of the tracks, but the organ becomes wearing after a while. It should be in the book because it does something new, but it isn’t for me.
Green onions and 11 more songs.
I don't want to be a fart but like there is no possible context where I will want to listen to this ever again lol
It was fine. I'd love hearing a church organist play this at a baseball game, but otherwise, meh. A lot of it was cover of popular songs, and honestly, I'd rather just listen to the originals (of which Booker T was likely playing).
Aburriiiiiiidoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Not my brew
