Reviews (page 9 of 13)

A real mixed bag. Green Onions is great, and there are some other worthy tracks, like Mo Onions and Lonely Avenue. However, the cover versions on the album, especially Stranger on the Shore and I got a woman, add little to the originals and tend to be a bit cheesy.

I remember when Susanna invited me to join some friends at her flat for a birthday dinner party. We had a three course meal and played charades. Which, for a twelve year old's birthday party in Maidenhead felt like a very grown up affair indeed, and was a strong contrast with the star chart her parents still maintained on the fridge to monitor her behaviour. After the meal her father played us all his favourite song and offered £5 to whoever could name it. A few minutes of increasingly complex culinary clues later and David Wilkes had doubled his pocket money that month. The song, of course, was Green Onions. This album has a great sound. I like this laid back early r'n'b much more than I like the jazz from a similar era. It's really easy listening. Background Sunday morning. It is magic? No. Does it connect with me on a deep personal level? No. But we need music like this to exist, great music to elevate us a little.

Opzich wel geinig. Eerste nummer is erg bekend. Verder absolute 60's vibe met het Hammond orgel en covers van bekende nummers. Prima voor op de achtergrond

The title track is familiar and it's a great groove. The rest of the album is mostly good background/study music. The one other track I liked a little more was the last one, Comin' Home Baby.

Someone bring me the big spoon, because that Hammond Organ is like ice cream, and I want to eat the whole pint. That said, while I really enjoyed this, and almost wanted to give it a 4, it ultimately felt like background music. Albeit good background music.

Purely instrumental. Recognise a few. Pretty good but gets a bit samey and boring. May be better if listen more

🎧Giving this a 3 largely on the strength of the title track…one of the best songs ever made. Period. The rest is fine.

Nice listen, Green Onions is pretty far away the best track though. Will I listen to again: 20%

Like good on-hold music. Not really my thing, but it's okay. I can see why it's enjoyable.

I hear this album came out of a tight studio band who were messing around before their recording session with Jerry Lee Lewis (who was late for reasons we won’t discuss here) when someone sat on the soundboard, inadvertently recording the prolonged warm up set. Again, seminal stuff, but kinda boring. I really can’t think of where/when I would listen to this - except that it’s DNA is in everything since.

So crazy that this was the first release on Stax and that it was released in 1962. The title track still sounds fresh and is such an in the pocket groove. The rest of the album is good but I find it all sounds similar after a while but must have playing out of every window when it was first released.

Not bad, 1st song stands out, others are ok

pretty good, bit samey tho

That’s how you play an electric organ!

The title track alone is worth the price of admission but the whole album is a very pleasant to listen. The Hammond organ does get a little old though.

Vellaget, smalt, Tarantino musikk, hadde vært kult live, blir litt mye av det samme, hadde gjort seg med noe synging.

Funky fresh is the only way to describe it. Reminds me of A’s games. Middle of the record wears a little thin.

these guys really like the key of F. these are some pretty decent instrumental R&B jams, but the harmonic homogeneity seeps in very quickly. worth a listen for the title track. my shortest review thus far. decent 6/10.

6.5/10

Weird instrumental album but I also quite enjoyed it

No private session used for Spotify. I am quite familiar with Green Onions, that tasty cool jam. Beyond that it was all new, the songs seemed to have the same style and sound as Green Onions, but without the same catchiness.

Some stone cold classics here. Songs I’d known but could have never told you who made them. Probably the movies they appeared in?

Own this. Classic r&b

This is a great instrumental album. The title song is one of those songs that everybody knows, but nobody knows its name or who released it. Many cover songs as usual for that time. Easy listening, good background music.

who left their library music here? bruton? bruton music, have you been forgetting your things again? i dont mind listening to the library music bruton you don't have to be self-conscious!

Fav song: Mo' Onions Great performance and fantastic production for the time period. It's amazing how Green Onions has stood the test of time, still wracking up millions of plays even all these years later!

Clearly extremely influential. Recognised a good few songs straight away.

Not sure if I was just in the right mood, but I actually enjoyed this album

I've heard the title track to this debut album from Booker T. & the MG's, as "Green Onions" is one of those songs that's become an American ballpark stable. I've gone to baseball games where this song gets blared out of the speakers between pitches, and it's always a nice addition to the ambiance. As for the rest of the album, it follows suit of the title track as an instrumental R&B album. Most of the tracks are covers of blues and R&B staples with the vocal duties taken over by Booker T. on the Hammond M3 organ. Is it a decent album where all the instruments play well to capture the vibes? Yes, with the organ playing, the minimalist rhythm section accompaniment, and Steve Cropper's rollicking guitar licks. But it doesn't transcend past its "decent" quality. It is still another debut album from the 1960s mostly comprising cover songs. Green Onions the album is enjoyable for the moment, but outside of the title track, it's not as necessary to seek out.

3.4 Wanted to like it a lot more than i actually did, it was nice but nothing that blew me away faves: green onions

This album was kind of ok? The best song was Green Onions. There wasnt a worst because of how the same all of the songs on here sounded.

Enjoyable! I clicked properly into it toward the end. Toe tappers all, though. The guitars were often surprising, in a good way.

Good background music for working.

Foundational, but no sticking power as individual songs it felt like

Great instrumental jazz / whatever it is. Very recognizable songs from other artists. This album is missing something without vocals but clearly they are the talent behind many hits.

Some great ones on there but not every song was a hit.

I definitely feel conflicted about this album. The original songs are fun and groovy, but I'm not sure most of the cover songs work on this album with the instrumentation present. Covering vocals with a baseball organ was certainly a choice, and I wish there were more original songs instead of underdone covers. Top tracks: Green Onions, Mo' Onions, Comin' Home Baby

This album was Ok. The guitar and organ kind of ran out of gas after a while. Did not realize Green Onions was from an akbumnof the same name.

Title track “Green onions” is a classic. I knew it right away even tho I was unfamiliar with the rest of the album. Really fun album! Good listen

I really wanted to love this one but it did not grab me in the way I thought it would. It's fun and novel but that's about it. Bummer.

Rating: B

The title track plus 11 other organ instrumentals. Don't think they're meant as such but with 2024 ears it all sounds quite cheesy. I imagine they saw themselves as a hard rocking rhythm & blues band or something but some of tracks have a bit of a James Last kind of vibe. The album is over before it has the chance to irritate too much.

title track is zeer goed, rest is een beetje meer van het zelfde... zeker niet slecht, maar had er meer van verwacht

Green Onions is a masterclass in instrumental soul and R&B, showcasing the tight chemistry of Booker T. & The MG’s. The album’s standout track, “Green Onions,” is a timeless groove driven by Booker T. Jones’s smoky Hammond organ and Steve Cropper’s sharp, bluesy guitar riffs. The rhythm section, featuring Donald “Duck” Dunn on bass and Al Jackson Jr. on drums, provides a rock-solid foundation that carries the music effortlessly. The group’s ability to blend blues, jazz, and soul into cohesive instrumental tracks is remarkable. The Hammond organ steals the show, adding a warm, funky edge to every song. Tracks like “Mo’ Onions” and “Rinky-Dink” keep the vibe smooth yet dynamic, while others lean into raw, soulful grooves. This album is a cornerstone of the Stax Records sound, proving that sometimes music doesn’t need words to tell a story. The vintage vibe still feels fresh today, and its influence on modern genres like funk and neo-soul is undeniable. Genre: Soul/R&B

i use green onions when i cook and thought it was a silly name. turns out i've heard the song before many times. 7/10

Obviously iconic main song but I was honky tonked out by the end

First song is about as iconic as you can possibly be. I didn't know this until I heard it and immediately knew the song from the Sandlot. The rest of the album was good but sounded like lesser versions of Green Onions. Overall good.

Organ and guitar - smooth instrumental covers, slinky and groovy fun. Everyone knows Green Onions.

A great fun album that would be nice to throw on for background music. Great covers and really enjoyed hearing more than Green Onions— Comin’ Home Baby was great! Overall it’s a good album, it did feel repetitive at a point and like there wasn’t much difference from the previous song.

It’s a vibe and certainly good at what it is, but I’d be lying if I said this sustained my interest as an album. Massive respect for the time period and what they managed to make here, but this just doesn’t feel like an album to me.

lol, nothing to say that hasn’t been said.

Right, so, the title track is smooth, groovy and iconic. It sets you up for a ride that never really comes. I have to say that an album od instrumentals that includes an organ is unique, but it doesn't really need to be in every song. My own cultural lens probably ruins it as well, since a lot of the way the organ is played on Green Onions really reminds me of say, a working men's club or a performer in Benidorm at a resort full of British people eating beans on toast. Ignoring said cultural lens, I still don't think we need an album with an organ on every song. It sort of loses the novelty of its rarity. Anyway, it deserves a 3 for being unique and smooth, at the very least. The musicianship is clearly good too.

Like the classic first track.

This seems more recent than 1962. But still a three-star performance.

Title track is great, the rest of the songs better suited as background music.

I think it's good though not my cup of tea. It will probably receive a 3.

A bit dated in places but contains some classics.

6/10 Good music, good musicians, good vibes A little limited in scope, so somewhat limited from being amazing Preferred the more r&b and soul influenced than the more bluesy ones Best: Twist and Shout

Green onions 👍

funky :P

FAVO: Green Onions , Twist and Shout, Behave yourself, Lonely avenue

this is an album i have always been perplexed by. i've always seen this album regarded in the highest standard. to be sure, the musicianship on here is great and it was a monumental moment for r&b and stax records. but, quite frankly, this album is really one note. the title track is by far the stand out song here. the rest of it is kind of whatever, even boring at times. does this album get the praise off of one song? i think so? i mean the one song is great and iconic. the rest of the album sounds like "let's make 11 other worse versions of green onions." a lot of of-the-era covers here. perhaps a lot more monumental for 1962, for modern listeners, i can't imagine there's a whole lot here for them.

It's alright. It feels like they took the first track and then decided to do the same thing with a slight twist every song afterwards. By the end, I'm just bored hearing the same thing over and over. It's well played and is smooth, but an entire album of the same thing....

Obviously recognized the song Green Onions, but I can't say I ever knew the title and artist, I didn't realize the group was all instrumental. Pretty cool laid back 60s tunes. There are instrumental versions of a lot of recognizable songs on here, kinda interesting. I wish the organ wasn't so prominent, he obviously rips on the organ but it gets a little old.

Funny genre

Interesting album but not one I'll go back to

This is #day75 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... I have to say, the album cover caught my eye right away (I’m a fan of green onions!). When I learned it was a soul record, though, I was already bracing for frustration (Soul is currently among my worst genres), but then I found out it’s instrumental soul (with funk and blues elements to boot), and I felt somewhat relieved. The organ takes center stage throughout the entire album, creating a rich, engaging sound. Overall, it was a delightful discovery, and I can only imagine how impactful this was in 1962 when it came out. It's a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day76.

#42 Nice for background dinner music.

Decent album - worth a listen

I'd only ever heard Green Onions and Behave Yourself off of this album. It is some brilliant soul and groove from the early 1960s. Standouts: Green Onions, I got A Woman and Behave Yourself

It was okay

Får jo lyst å handla på dressmann

For its historical significance, I get it. And it was cool to hear some of these classic pieces performed in this old school, classic and simple way. But overall? This was kind of boring for me.

I mean it’s a classic.

The basic premise of this record was the repurposing of Jimmy Smith’s Hammond organ sound to the pop music scene. To that end, the title track is the pivotal artefact on this record and has rightly endured the passage of time. The rest of the album, though, is just a series of covers which try to demonstrate the versatility of Green Onions’ sonic innovation by replicating its one trick on a series of rock n roll standards. Truthfully, the result is less impressive, and not a single one of these covers unseats their original recording as the definitive one, but it’s still a nice background listen for the most part. Just go and seek out Jimmy Smith’s “Back at the Chicken Shack” for a more interesting approach to this technological milestone in music.

It is a fun and easy album to stick on. Can I see myself doing so much? Not sure. There's only so much Hammond one person can take in one sitting. I love Time is Tight which is not here, but always signalled the end of the night on Wednesdays indie night at The Ritz. I also wish there were more of their own jams, the jaunty covers are fun but I find myself enjoying their compositions like Behave Yourself more.

Classic.

No me di cuenta que tanta gente samplea este album

Strong feel good vibes here. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that this album was daring or even all that impressive, but enjoyable? No one can take that away from this cutesy little album. I’d never heard of this band before but they made me smile and put me in the Friday feeling. Honestly I couldn’t hope for much more.

Decent instrumental soul/funk record. Great for sampling.

It was good. Starts out especially strong with the title track. Some songs did occasionally blur into one, but overall we enjoyed this.

Pleasant enough, but nothing to write home about. Background noise

Rock, blues instrumentals, mostly covers. In the 60's this was definitely the kind of music old people were worried would make young people want to dance. Lots of organ, like being at a baseball game after a while. Fav Tracks: Green Onions. Comin' Home Baby (felt like Pink Panther music) Least Fav Track: It didn't really hold my attention for most of the second half. My personal enjoyment: 3.5/5 Did it belong on this list: 4/5

The song Green Onions keeps popping up in my playlists. It's so cool and always fun. I've never heard the rest of the album before. Unfortunately, the guys don't manage to keep the level as high as on their opening track. Overall, the album was quite fun, but reminded me in part of the music at private parties where a solo entertainer wanted to try out the possibilities of his new synthesizer. I will continue to listen to the Green Onions track with enthusiasm, but probably not the rest of the album. 3/5

And so the streak I spoke of yesterday continues. It’s been a rough week. I’ve been exhausted almost the entire time, and these albums are really not helping my case. I’ve spoken before about my dilemma when it comes to music released generally before the year 1965. So I won’t bog this review down by saying anything more. Truthfully I didn’t know there was a musician named Booker T. Because I always assumed that was a wrestler. But Booker T. and Booker T. Jones are two different people. The consensus towards this album seemed to be that the titular opening track was the one, and only, highlight. I wondered how that could be. And then I pressed play and understood why. Green Onions is actually an incredibly iconic song, that probably needs no introduction. Everyone has heard it at some point in their life, whether they remember it or not. So I can understand why this record is notable for that song exclusively. It is hard to do better than that. Definitely one of the most defining soul songs of all time. I saw a comment someone made that said Green Onions was released first, became super popular, and then everything else was recorded after, in hopes that they might capture the same energy and get another hit. I don’t believe that’s true at all. The only song that really sounds like they were trying to replicate Green Onions is Mo' Onions, which is pretty obviously a reprise of the former. And it’s still a decent song at that. Besides those two tracks, there is only one other piece of original music on the record. Everything else, including the entirety of the B-side, is all covers. So that’s not where my issue lies. Why is not giving this a glowing score is because almost everything else this has to offer past the first four songs is super lackluster. If Green Onions and I Got a Woman weren’t included, this was just be looked at as the weak debut from one of soul music’s most important groups. Rating: 5/10

Adequately chill and funky

I knew the song Green onions (like pretty much everyone on the planet) going into this. The rest of the album is interesting, but I find it hard to get excited when most of the songs are covers.

A tough one. It's fairly catchy, clearly significant, and well done, but I just don't like it all that much.

Good little instrumental album this band were some seriously talented musicians and Booker T was a real talent at such a young age. The title track is an all time banger and the rest of the album is good but no where to the standard of the title track but the musicianship in each track is spot on and makes this album worth listening to.

Some great tracks on here. Excellent background music rather than an album that absorbs you though.

6/10. It features some really nice, and smooth music, but I don't really vibe with it that much. :)

A bit old for me, I recognize a lot of parts that was sampled in other songs. I respect that but overall I wouldn’t listen to it regularly.

Title track was very good. The rest of the album sounded a little samey, perhaps too much pipe organ for my taste when it is an instrumental album.

toaster music 6/10

Green Onions (the song) is a hood classic. As for the rest I didn't mind but I wasn't mind blown. Good album overall. Best - Green Onions Worst - no bad songs 3/5

Royalty free music you can play in the background of a high school video project

Crematorium Ray Charles.

Enjoyed the album, no lyrics, easy background listening

Green Onions, the first track, is great and the rest is very good but feels a bit like the foundation of a house. Like the bones of some great music if only there were more elements in play. Great band but will listen to some other efforts next time.

That song! This was inoffensive enough if not the most exciting.

It's difficult to listen to this without finding a mix of mario kart and elevator music even tho it predates both!! We enjoyed nonetheless on the way to get pancakes

It’s ok. Not much going on. Fucking love green onions on everything tho

baseball stadium ahh music

“Green Onions” has been in too many movies to count, but my favorite is “The Sandlot” when the country club kids roll up on the crew at the Sandlot. Ham Porter: Hey, Is that your sister out there in left field, naked? She's naked?

Sounded really familiar.

For a band and album I’d never even heard of, I was surprised how many tunes I recognized. The title track in particular is instantly recognizable, though I never would’ve guessed its name. While I appreciated the lack of vocals and I think this could serve as decent background music, as a whole album it felt pretty one dimensional, and I admit the organ started to feel grating.

It’s fun I like it enough. Not really my music and I’m ignorant of the history of the genre but it feels genre defining.

Fuck yeah, what do you even call this. It’s great when you can’t fit a record into one genre (usually). Makes it feel wholly original, much like this album. On the con side, many of these tracks, especially the covers, feel like they belong in commercials. There’s a big hole in this album that substance should be filling that they instead tried to plug with instrumentation as fancy as they could find. I don’t think any of the songs are bad, some of the compositions are really quite surprisingly beautiful. However, I wouldn’t really want to listen to the whole thing again. A song or two I could handle. 3/5

The music here was smooth, funky and delicious. The lack of vocals was conspicuous and could be a little jarring on well-known songs that have an integral vocal melody. The organ is a decent approximation of vocals, but it ended up coming off as corny or muzaky in some cases. The Green Onions tracks were excellent and perfectly balanced. Three stars.

Nice Background music, but overall lackluster

Waaaan waaaaaaan

01) Green Onions - 10,0 02) Rinky Dink - 8,0 03) I Got A Woman - 7,0 04) Mo' Onions - 8,0 05) Twist And Shout - 7,0 06) Behave Yourself - 7,5 07) Stranger On The Shore - 7,0 08) Lonely Avenue - 6,5 09) One Who Really Loves You - 7,0 10) You Can't Sit Down - 7,0 11) A Woman, A Lover, A Friend - 7,0 12) Comin' Home Baby - 7,5 TOTAL: 7,46 (75/100)

Right away I’m shocked. The song Green Onions, I had always thought was “On the road again” by canned heat. I had never listened to Green Onions on my own and never really heard the whole song. Mind blown already! Then Rinky Dink comes on and I didn’t realize these guys made that song. I think I had these guys and Sly and the Family Stone mixed up. I was expecting some Soul/Funk/Disco type music and not fun smelling flowers hippy stuff. Either way, this is a win 2 songs in. The only issues I have with this album are 1) there isn’t any singing on it 2) even though there isn’t singing on it, I still enjoy it so that tells me that I just don’t like jazz Choice cut: Rinky Dink

Back ground music at a dive bar. If I was attending blues night and this was the band I'd be impressed and say they're tight. Only thing that would be better is more guitar just like "You Can't Sit Down"

Agradable. Pero sin más. Instrumental rocksoulR&B.

It's okay, I actuslly would like to re-listen to it

Wild that this was released in 1962 when Booker T was 17 years old. Such a pioneering album and sound. That being said, there are moments where there is Hammond Organ overload. The album is all covers other than two songs. Great background music. Check out Booker T's Christmas album. It's a staple in our house.

The music is entertaining but I kept expecting to hear a "your call is important to us - a representative will be right with you!" in the middle of each song.

Enjoyed this a lot. Funky and a bit silly with the comical sound of the Hammond organ. Certainly a refreshing change compared to many albums on this list.

Very influential, these instrumentals set the stage for a ton of later songs. Every one I hear I feel like I've heard somewhere else. And green onions is a banger.

bro like every song ever is in this. very cool and interesting but not my cup of tea

{60/100} Some solid stuff, but there was no track here that really floored me. I can see the influence this album has had, and I appreciate it, but it's just not that texturally interesting to me. Some very simple sounding drum parts, other than a few fills, and heavy reliance on the organ. For something somewhat adjacent to this, I prefer what I've heard from The Meters.

Totally solid but you really only need to hear the title track. 5/10 as an album, good background tunes tho. Booker T Jones is a living legend though.

Green Onions! Ich kannte weder den Namen des Songs noch die Band, aber schon nach 2 Takten den Song! Leider zuwenig Zeit im Urlaub alles zu hören, daher 3 und nicht mehr.

Title track is a classic. Not sure if I'd necessarily seek the rest out, but overall enjoyed this.

me senti dentro de um jogo então a experiência foi positiva na sua maior parte

6.5/10

Really good blues album

you can't go wrong with some sleazy 60s soul muzak. there's a good amount of tracks that stick to traditional doo-wop-pop progressions, but it's done in a way that's easy on the ears. if there's one thing i can say, this album is stylish but it seriously lacks variety. you'll listen to one track, you've basically listened to all of them. it's alright for what it is though. the perfect album for relaxing in the sun.

Booker T. & the M.G.'s green onions is a project that really shouldn’t be listened to, its lifeless and was capitalized off the success of the title track. all boring and very repetitive. 3/10

This was pleasant enough but slipped into the background a bit much for me to score higher than this.

Green Onions (track) is the obvious classic, still, there’s some other good stuff on here.

A bit dated but a few great tunes

It's a classic for a reason.

Green onions (the song) is v fun, but found the album a little repetitive

Pretty good instrumental album. Definitely one to throw on at parties. The organ sound is cool as fuck. But let's be honest this album is really carried by the iconic title track. Couple of other really fun songs, but mostly background noise for the most part

1. 9 2. 7 3. 6 4. 7 5. 6 6. 8 7. 7 8. 6.5 9. 5.5 10. 6.5 11. 6 12. 7.5 6.83/10 3.42/5

An oddball album. Felt like an instrumental jazzy cover album with a very prominent organ player. Some of the songs I had heard before but not necessarily from this album. Feels like they’ve been sampled a ton. The organ kinda wore on me after a while. Felt like being at a baseball game.

Chill and nice album but most of them weren't very memorable

Pretty chill, although a tad repetitive

I liked Green Onions, Stranger on the Shore and Lonely Avenue.

Bro popped his ultimate on one song lol. I like how easy this is to listen to and it is too damn iconic it is a perfect three I think the piano and the guitar is so smooth.

Pretty old instrumental music, many parts could be used in chase scenes in tom and jerry. Stand-out: Can't Sit Down

The legendary Stax backing band which sounds so fucking good on Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and Sam and Dave tracks releases an instrumental album. It's interesting the hear this band in the spotlight since it's always the singers who sing on their foundation who often steal the show. The album essentially sounds like a very good band jamming on some original songs as well as some unnecessary covers without a singer. At times this results in really cool in songs like Green Onions and Mo' Onions while in others songs you miss the singer and you recognize why they are meant to be a backing band rather than recording artists themselves. Tempted to give it 4 stars because they contributed to so much music I love, and because you can tell that this would just awesome to hear live. But going to give it 3 because that's would I would give it without all the aforementioned context

It was good, but as a purely instrumental album it’s missing something

3.5 nice to listen to but all sound same-y

Notable track: Green Onions

Vibes but no lyrics

Pretty good.

Well this was sort of OK. I did recognise Green Onions and it and the rest are OK. However this was just short enough not to get irritating as there was little variety.

Ansi hresst og skemmtilegar útgáfur af allskonar lögum. Booker greinilega mikið undrabarn.

First song is exceptional, the rest is quite boring

Solid nice old 60s jazz 5/10

it does the bluesin' pretty well

Fabulous musicians - but besides Green Onions I’m not going out of my way to listen to this regularly. Also is the song "Stranger on the Shore" used at the beginning of Callin' Biz on the first handsome boy modeling school album?

Although it is an important record for music history I just don't get it. It sounds like it was played at a baseball game and it was not for me. "Green Onions" the song was ok but nothing crazy. "Twist and Shout" was interesting as an instrumental but I much prefer The Beatles version. Overall it was just fine.

Все мелодии до боли знакомые, сыграны хорошо, но не более

Was fine

Vibe for background music while working. It was fine.

Oh, THAT tune! And that one, too? OK, I know this band. And so do you! OK, the Dr Suess-like rhyme there was accidental, especially since this music is more like something you'd hear in a Peanuts cartoon. It is fun to imagine an era and setting when this was the jam.

wau. wau wau wau... albumin tittelibiisi, toki kuullut mutta Top 10 Songs You've Heard But Don't Know the Name! Oh, so THAT song is called "Green Onions." Heard it, but never knew. Matter of fact, that holds true for the entire group; I've heard of Booker T. & The MG's, but I couldn't tell you a single song until now. I'm usually not a big fan of the 8- or 12-bar blues as it is predictable and there's not much more one can add to it, but "Green Onions" does find a nice groove with it. And then there's "Mo' Onions" which is, well, mo' "Onions." "Rinky Dink" reminds of "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)", "I Got A Woman" is a fun, romping jam, and the slow strut of "Behave Yourself" and "Stranger on the Shore" makes me wish they had a female jazz singer to accompany them. Some sweetness should be warmed with honey. I would be fine never hearing another version of "Twist and Shout" ever again. The guitarist has some tasty licks on this tune, but if it ain't the organ, good luck hearing it in the mix. All organ, all of the time. I feel--not insultingly--like I'm grooving during a prolonged Seventh Inning Stretch at the ballpark. Long, hot summer days on the bricks. The guitarist does eventually get some love in the mix half way through the album on tracks like "Stranger on the Shore" and "Lonely Avenue." Overall, not bad. For me, the same instrumentation throughout calls for a break, and these tunes would work better in a playlist in order to break things up a bit. I enjoyed it, but I'm not going to pick this one up.

This was a fun, easy listen. I was familiar of course with the title track since forever, but I enjoyed listening to mo'. At times I wondered if the organ would be better with a sustain pedal, more soulful, but then I think it would lose its jittery staccato melisma that gives it so much of its character. This album is mostly covers, and while their original, Green Onions, is probably my fave, I enjoyed hearing the band's signature sound applied to various songs of that era.

I liked this. Soul, Jazz, Gospel, Rock and Roll and Blues is what I hear throughout this album. Green Onions is truly a great song. I think It's the only one of theirs that I am familiar with. It seems like good music to have on in the background at a dinner party. I'll have to look into more of their music.

There's some really iconic music in here. You really get a sense that the 60s were starting to come grow up out of the 50s musical origins in these tracks

That opening should come with a parental advisory. The rest is just cool--you can have it as your background music to a groovy pre-hippie 60s-themed party and enjoy every song but have a hard time thinking of any names. C'mon get you're groove on.

Twist and Shallot Cornichon baby Allium, a lover, a friend Pickling’ dink One who pearly loves you Grab your white boots and min skirt! Groovy baby!

I mean, yeah, this is cool enough. It's hard to argue with any individual tune—and the title track is a gem—but it's a little too one-note for an intense listen. as background music, though, it's hard to complain about this. put it on at a party or in a bar and you're good. plus, the band is great.

They really brought the Hammond organ into the mainstream and damn that opening track just makes you bop.

Agradable. Pero sin más. Instrumental rocksoulR&B

Very nice

Pleasant. Sandlot vibes

Definitely influential for its time and worthy of being included on the list, very repetitive by the end though despite some tasty organ and guitar work

It's fine

Quite like green onions and a few of the other tracks. But a whole albums worth of organ funk was a little bit too much for me.

I don't usually listen to more than one album a day, but I missed yesterday and I'm bored on the train back from Boston, so let's go for another one. I had absolutely no clue what this was until I clicked play and realized it was 'The Sandlot" song. "Green Onions" the song is an instrumental that's been used in a ton of things, including "The Sandlot" and "Happy Gilmore". It's one of those things that's kind of iconic but I had no clue what it actually was. Apparently Booker T. (Jones) was only 18 years old and still in high school when this was released, which is super impressive. The album is all instrumental and has this soul/rock thing going on. It's a bit hard to rate something like this. Old instrumental albums are already a bit tough, but then throw in the fact that this one has one truly iconic song and a bunch of others that are much less well-known. It's perfectly good, and I'm glad that I know what this song is now, but I'm not sure that I really loved it. The vibe is a bit "county fair" to me (I think because of the Hammond M3 organ that Booker T. is playing), which maybe is fine but not something I need to listen to a lot, it doesn't sound very cool if I'm being honest. I just made a comment yesterday at a Catholic wedding that organists have to be a bit of a dying breed. Booker T was crushing it 62 years ago though. I also have to comment on the cover. Very possibly the most literal album cover ever. It is a (not particularly high quality?) picture of green onions. To the point. Favorite song: Green Onions Other: Rinky Dink, Mo' Onions, Twist and Shout, Behave Yourself, A Woman a Lover a Friend 5/12/24

Sounds like if the organ player at Wrigley Field decided to hijack the entire game with his album. Sounds great but just play ball.

classic. one hit wonder

This is great background music.

Less of a one song album than I anticipated but it’s hard for me to get into any all instrumental album 2.8

Dressman miesten rähinä musiikkia. Täysin instrumentaalista. Green Onions on THE Dressman biisi. Parhaat: Green Onions, Mo' Onions

Some classics on here but I have heard them so many times that I got a little annoyed by the end.

Fun, but in an incidental kind of way. Good background music

Enjoyed it more than I expected. Several song were familiar which also surprised me. Makes for more background listening than dedicated listening for me.

Green Onions has to be one of the grooviest organ lines of all time. Ripper start to finish that oozes cool confidence. Hearing "I Got a Woman" my brain was so confused. I started to imagine Kanye West's gold digger and didn't place this at first as a Ray Charles cover given how it is arranged. Stranger on the Shore is another standout to me. Languid bluesy, jazz song that is extremely easy going. I will say that, while I enjoy some strong organ work with jamming drum and bass, I think I would have preferred to hear more original material in the vein of Green Onions rather than a litany of covers. Certain areas really stood out (Stranger on the Shore and Lonely Avenue) but a lot of the rest sort of fell to the background. For me this falls into a grey area; high 2 to low 3. Nudging on the strength of the title track.

Green onions is a great song. other solid jams on here as well. 3.5 stars for me

Never heard of this band or this album, but I have definitely heard Green Onions a hundred times in my life. Loads of organ-forward jazz to start and then it switches into more of a surf rock style. Overall I liked the sound, but it was pretty samey the whole way through with nothing too exciting going on. Definitely teeters on a 4, but I'll pull out another 3+ for this.

Considering this album came out in 1962--when the Motown label was only 3 years old and albums were nothing more than collections of singles--Booker T & co. made a good set of singles to put on the hi-fi and dance around the living room. Is this on par with What's Going On? No, of course not. But considering the evolution that R&B and pop music went through in 8-10 years and the expectations listeners put on an album, this is a collection of some early R&B better than most from 1962. Besides Booker T.'s relentlessly soulful organ, guitarist Steve Cropper--as described by Keith Richards--is "Perfect, man." I love Cropper for all that he doesn't do. He's never there to show off, just to support the groove.

This is from such an earlier time that it almost feels basic or weird but you can see some of its influence on a lot of bands. I probably don't have the musical depth to get everything out of this that's there. Green Onions is a classic song.

Classic opening track. This is a band who know what they are doing.

If you told me I was about to embark on 35 minutes of instrumental music from a backing band in 1962 I'd have said Oh Christ. Luckily it wasn't as bad as I feared. I do actually love the 12 bars riff which formed the basis for a good chunk of the songs. The organ was a welcome addition in lieu of any vocals. Couple tracks saved down, first one is obviously timeless. Also nice to hear where Beatles got their Twist & Shout version from.

Interesting instrumental album. Standout songs: Green Onions Lonely Avenue You Can't Sit Down

It wasn't bad, but it really confuses me how highly rated this instrumental album is.

Some of the songs were NOT funky fresh by my tastes. Overall quite a good album, but some of the songs were too slow and boring instrumentally. Still enjoyable, but it was very slow at times. At least they respected my time and only made the album 35 minutes lol. 3/5 for the good songs, 2 taken off for the slow songs and it just not being my taste in instrumentals. Favourite gotta be Green Onions.

The title song is a classic of course, but I prefer them when they are fronted by Otis or some other star.

I swear I already had this album.

I liked this. All instrumentals.

Nice to hear those classic tunes that have been used in so many different contexts, but listening to the whole album was a bit boring after a while. The organ got on my nerves.

Love this band, I was meaning to listen to more from them since Green Onions

#178. This is fine. That's about all I've got to say about it though. Not bad, but also kinda background-musicky 3/5: decent

Está gracioso

The title track is a jam. The rest of the album is a definite vibe that can be grating sometimes.

I am glad I listened, but the songs did not make an impression with me- I kept thinking another instrument would come and join forces.

Familiar tunes, nice enough for background music but not wild about it.

It turns out when you take the repetitive lyrics out of the blues and play them electronically, they seem to actually be a little more interesting. There are no sappy lyrics here, just stripped down blues riffs and covers that make heavy use of an organ. Organs aren't my favorite instrument sound. They remind me of church. But they kind of lend a smoothness and electronic sound to this album that I enjoy. As suspected Booker T. Played organ in church growing up. But it almost sounds a bit sacreligious here as if he's rebelling against the normal church organ sound. It also felt a bit jazzy at times with flair added to sections to spice them up a bit. I generally liked this album even though it's not music I would typically listen to.

It was good. Maybe for some background sound, not particularly something I would listen to the whole album for

Classic opening track. Reminds me of a summer night. Good album overall, easy listening.

A lovely little instrumental album. Great easy-listening

Reasonable set of old-school tunes going on here. Green Onions is a banger. Others were alright.

Instrumental covers for other hits. Kinda fun

I've never listened to so much electric organ at one time. When I hear Green Onions, I can't help but think of The Sandlot

I do love Booker T, does this stand up for a whole album. Very nearly

It’s very hard to dislike this. Given the consistently happy grooves and the fact they absolutely nailed their classic sound on this debut album I was tempted to give it a 4, but once again the high percentage of cover versions means that a 4 doesn’t feel quite right.

Some fun songs I’d never heard

The title track is great, but every thing else just seems like a lesser version of it. I ended up completely zoning out during the middle third of this album. The musicians on this album are great and I love the sound of the organ, but it just couldn't really hold my attention. Also for 35 minutes, this album felt very long.

Green Onions (the song) is a classic, but if you've heard that one you've essentially heard most of the others on this album as well since they follow the same tone/vibe. While I normally like instrumental albums to be a little more involved or flashy, I could definitely see this album spinning on a turn table on a relaxed summer evening while cooking some dinner.

Green Onions is a classic, but you can hear that house band talent in everything.

Good intrusmental grooves

Шо за лук о, груви, знакомый сэмпл. Но вообще альбом это чилл лукособирание и копание на грядке. Слишком спокойно и чиллово на мой вкус. Но при этом приятно

The title track is iconic. That and the rest of the originals are so dialed in they are the perfect representation of a hot studio band. Sound "timeless and perfectly of their time." But the covers just get boring.

Great performances by all the musicians, I’m just not a fan of pure instrumental.

It's ok. Plenty of Hammond organ and slow walking blues. Lobby music these days an d in offensive - I might call on it for focus / desk work.. .

"Hey guys, remember that single you threw together recently? Well, it sold a bajillion copies. And now we need an album." "um, ok. When do you need it?" "Tomorrow afternoon, latest." Don't get me wrong, Booker T. and the MGs were a crack band, and they recorded some amazing singles over their career, and I quite like their McElmore Ave album (a track for track cover of Abbey Rd). But this album is a quick cash-in on the popularity of the Green Onions single. Most of the material is weak, and they haven't quite dialed in on their sound. For my money, their following album Soul Dressing is much more listenable, and certainly they released lots of very strong singles. And they backed many, many classics cuts as a backing band. And we shouldn't underestimate their influence as a multi-race band from the South in the 60s. I suspect Dimery wanted to acknowledge the band and their significant influence, and so popped this album on the list (partly because he won't acknowledge compilations, which are often the best representation of singles bands). But seriously, did he listen to this record? Not their best work (title track aside; that is an absolute banger).

Buen disco

nothing special except the title track

Early 60’s instrumental groove. The title track is iconic, peaking at #3 on the US Hot 100, and topping the R&B chart. One of the great instrumental tracks, back when instrumentals were part of the hit mix. Which leads to the downside. This is not an instrumental track, it’s an instrumental album from an instrumental band. A dozen tracks over 36 minutes. And while the song “Green Onions” is brilliant, the rest of it kind of blurs into the background. Maybe what you’d expect in the background of an early 60’s beach blanket movie. I owned Green Onions on 45 back in the late 60’s, and I have a “Hits” album by Booker T and MGs. Their peaks are great, perfect for you oldies playlists. But the whole album wears a little thin, except as background music. 3/5

It was interesting. Sometimes I was bopping along and good without lyrics (I Got a Woman) and other times I really wanted lyrics. Listening to Rinky Dink felt a little unsatisfying without Mickey and Sylvia. All in all it was a good listen and fun to recognize a talented group that probably does not receive enough praise.

Fun early rock n’ roll instrumentals. Enjoyable but not something I’d come back to.

Super interesting that they were mainly a backing band for famous artists. I found this to be groovy and a pleasant listen. Title track has become pretty iconic over time. The album had me wishing they would’ve experimented with adding vocals, but a good time nonetheless.

this is great background music for whatever but would never choose to listen to it in and of itself

5.5/10

good stuff

You know how everyone thinks Otis Redding songs would be way better without the vocals? Well finally an album that's just the band!

I liked the Hammond organ ... it fits the songs. Typically, I don't go for purely instrumental pop bands, but Booker T. & the M.G.s are more on the early soul and funk side of things, and so I didn't mind it.

Removing the title track it's a solid 3. All nice and groovy while it's playing, but doesn't stick with you.

Groundbreaking, but not for me. Hell knows how many films Booker T.'s music has been featured in. How many times it's been used by other artists. Let's be honest, his version of Abbey Road is better than the Beatles performing it themselves.

- anyone else think stranger on the shore sounds like o christmas tree

Heard Booker T a million times but never listened to a whole album.l enjoyed it, it's a little bit like rocky bluesy Jazz.

This album has a cool, distinctive sound that I like but I was bored after about 4 tracka

Good, didnt find full album.

Really liked it! Green Onions is a classic :D

Instrumental not usually for me but these felt like classics for some reason?

Title track was great n fun n all that — the rest sounds like the echoes and reverberations of the first without the vibes. Fun still, but very homogenous. Listen for vibes

elevator music

Background noise. Brilliant album cover.

I played the album in the background when I cleaned. It did feel repetitive sometimes but I still enjoyed the music.

Can I interested you in some of the funkiest Hammond organ? Obviously the title track is one of life's great bangers, and just gives you a serotonin rush like little else. The rest of the album though - not for me. It's impressive and quite fun, obviously, but you're definitely pleased when it's over.

Classic early 1960s R&B. Worth it for the title track "Green Onions" alone, but the rest of the tracks on the album - which are mainly covers - feel a bit dated now.

Certaines musiques me font penser à des musiques de salle d'attente.

Not a fan of the keyboard/synthesizer, but there's some good guitar work on here, too. Very listenable.

yeah no gay ass vocals to make me hate it. no offense.

3.8 - Easygoing organ-forward bluesy R&B jazz. Booker T casually slays on "Behave Yourself" putting down a sound that the French space-electro duo Air would cop on their 1998 release "Moon Safari."

collection of instrumental tunes with an organ in the forefront. several covers. i have heard the title track countless times but didn’t know the name or the artist. overall, a fun listen.

This was okay. Certainly good musicianship.

Good stuff right here.

Most of this album low key sounds like elevator music. Not necessarily bad, but not the most engaging listen. Works great for background music. Less great for an album to listen to and pay attention to

Always good vibes when listening to Booker T, but the sound gets repetitive and old pretty quick for me.

Great instrumental album to listen to while making dinner or to have on in the background

Kind of a one trick pony but easy listening

Some great playing here, I’m not normally an instrumental album person but the organ playing is amazing.

Que de morceaux samplés !

Again knew just the one track. Enjoyable and would happily listen to again, but more of a background album for me. Maybe if I had a leather seat, a record player and a tumbler of whiskey I could give it the attention it deserves...

Good instrumental music to listen to when no lyrics are desired lol

Bit o'brass, bit o'shuffle, bit o'Hammond.

felt like it was missing something

Very fun, great mixing of instruments. I felt like songs that would be played in a bar in the US on the 60s

Enjoyed the groove of this album. All instrumental but varies in style, this is a funky and timeless classic.

Fajny blusik 3/5

You play ball like a GIRL! 😶

So many hits and rhythms from the next few years pulled together in an album. Relatively simple, but super important to music

Seems like a 1 track album. The rest sounds like filler, even a couple of cover tracks just to fill out the time.

The title track is great obviously, just an absolute classic. Great vibes all around. Still though, most of the rest of the album kinda feels like background music than something you'd put on to really listen to.

Fun listen! To hear other songs besides 'Green Onions" which everyone knows but probably not the title!

While I think the performances are great and there are some really stellar tracks, the lack of lyrics and relatively unwavering style makes this pretty boring. Using an Organ as your lyrical instrument, makes everything sound like elevator music for me. The first half was great on the first listen, but it just doesn't stand out as much for me. Favorites are Green onions, Rinky Dink, and 'A Woman, A Lover, a Friend'.

I love an instrumental, and I'm a fan of the tone that they set out in the first track, Green Onions, but 6 or 7 songs in, the album started to get repetitive.

pretty fun the whole way through, and a perfect album to listen to while doing house work

It was fine??? Idk, I got kind of bored, but these are all clearly very talented musicians and I know that their work was very influential.
