Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Pretty good if a little dated
hmm. the instrumental music did not much for me and was quite boring to me. I think this album might be too dated to be included in the 1001 albums.
Musical versions of some classics. Not bad but pretty boring. Good for an elevator or background at dinner.
That one song, greats A whole album of it, grates
After the first song, everything sounds the same. The first listen I completely blanked out the last half, and the second time I was begging for it to end so I could play something with more variety. Green Onions is a great song but it's not a great album.
i know this is like impressive technically, but man i was so bored by the end. the track Green Onions is fine, but then you have to listen to just worse versions of that track for 30 minutes. i picked up my phone and thought, "surely, this is almost over" and then i was only half way. i'm 90% sure booker t was slipping in extra tracks to fuck with me.
The version of this album that I listened to had the track listing reversed and the first two tracks on the normal release absent for whatever reason. I listen to every gol-darn album on this list twice, with me jumping in at the second half of the album and rolling over to the first on my second listen. Nice of this album to do that job for me on the first listen, I guess. I'm not sure how I feel about this one. There's a virtue in being safe sometimes and as someone with an immense, soulcrushing backlog of albums to get through I appreciate the brevity. That being said, there's something deeply sterile about this album that makes it difficult for it to hold my attention. I blame the organ. It's cool in short bursts, though I don't think you can get an album's-worth of mileage out of it, especially when you're delving into organ solo territory. Something about the organ just sounds nauseating to me the more I'm exposed to it, like it's out of key or something. I don't think there's enough of a transformative element to the songs that are covered on this album either, though I admittedly have no familiarity with the original iterations. I need to check the book in on this one. "Booker T. and the M.G.s" is a band name that is vaguely familiar, so I shant classify this as a "nowhere album". Let's see. One of the rare instrumental albums to hit it big. Umm. A whole lot of nothing. 🚨EEEEEEEEEEE🚨 I am officially disqualifying this album from inclusion in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die book. This is a red-alert situation. Grab your nearest white out and cover up this entry in your copy of the book NOW, as did I with my computer screen I don't actually know id I am typign sthis shit correctly can i gaet anonscreen nattator in here some thing it's too tark in the basement to see whether i;'m hitting the keys correctily
im climbing this ladder
Is okay
Of course I'm familiar with the magnificent title track, but frankly the album as a whole doesn't hold my attention - the rest of the tracks just aren't as good as the title track. Much of this album seems to consist of rather plodding cover versions. It's like a band without its lead singer. The album reminded me of Arnold Rimmer's Hammond organ recital night... Title track - 6 out of 5 (!) The rest of the tracks - 1-2 out of 5.
Perfect example of a label trying to capitalize on a really great recording, Green Onions. So they had to fill all other tracks to create an album…with elevator music. Not to take away from the musicians, as they were all excellent, but this album lacks any luster other than Green Onions.
Cool vibe but not something I ever want to listen to on purpose personally
This felt so flat I was disappointed.
N F M
these songs all have no words which i wasn’t expecting. the beats are catchy and some remind me of the beach boys a little. for me it’s hard to enjoy them as much when there is no words but i could see myself playing this album in the background while i study.
Pretty ok
Echoes memories of times I’ve never had. A record best used as a sleep aid.
I truly just don’t have like any feelings about this album.
Elevator music-adjacent, but still quite good
⭐⭐ Aged like milk. Album sounds like background music used for 'funny' corporate compilation videos
Iconic title track but the rest is far from essential
thinking this might not be for me kind of sounds like i’m in a garage with a bunch of 50 year old dads smoking cigs played their instruments well though! 4.5/10
Not bad
Annoying
2.5
Goes on a bit, doesn't it? Aside from the opening title track this all sinks into the background. I wouldn't be surprised to hear this as phone hold music, or playing through tinny supermarket speakers. It did have me shuffling around the place a little in what some might interpret as a dance. It made me go and listen to the much better, real versions of many of the songs.
Music as furniture
Interesting as an artefact of its time. Otherwise not.
Other than the title track making me think of the sandlot I just found this to be very frustrating. Very similar to hearing songs you know done by an artist they would play in an elevator.
If I listened to it in the 60s, maybe I'd enjoy it more. As it stands, it sounds like boring noodling on some jazz scale to me.
Good tunes I just didn’t enjoy some of the lesser known songs
Theres only so much electric organ you can listen to.
i think i'm too young for this.
Perfectly good for background music, but I really don't see what else this album really has to offer.
The title song is classic. I forgot I was listening to the rest of the album
One song and one song only
Nice, chill instrumental album, I recognized a lot of the songs on this album.
I’ve got no qualms with the quality of music, thank you Green Onions for the iconic Sandlot lick. But none of this sticks. It’s like how some people feel about house music, it’s all just kinda in the background, kinda not impactful or wanting to make its presence known - but at the same time it’s clearly not trying to do the ambient music angle where it’s intentionally out of the way/in the background too. Cool guys, important that they were racially integrated as early as this was, but just not doing anything for me musically
Kind of just consistently ok. Middling 2.
not good
It's an alright studio session but they're just jamming out some instrumental covers. C
CAN YOU DIG IT SUCKAAAAAAAAAAA "We'll be right back after these technical difficulties" type music. - familiar sounding.
I feel like I was at a baseball game during breaks in innings with the amount of Organ that was played. Too high pitch but some of the blues songs sounded good.
Who's going to walk in and stomp all over Green Onions? It might be me. Western popular music lovers all owe a debt to Booker T. & The M.G.s. but 1962 it isn't anymore and now much of this music sounds more like stale cheese than the pungent and powerful onion. I won't shackle it with a one star review, I reserve those shameful designations for true abominations of history and crimes against our ears. But time and the way people and culture move through it has taken what one day may have been a 5 star album down and cut these Green Onions in half to a 2.5 star review.
first song good, then you listen to the same song over and over
Not for me
Maso
groovy
De erst song isch mer natürli denn sofort sehr bekannt gsi und do demit denn eigentlich au scho, wo die reis no anegoht. Würd säge, nöd unbedingt mis ding. Aber s bemerkenswerte a dem album isch wohrschinlich eher s erschinigsjohr. Wür das jetzt usecho chiemts wohl nöd i das buech.
I'm sure this was revolutionary for the time, pretty cool even. But I fucking HATE the Hammond Organ and I hate the tone of the guitar in this. I just couldn't take it. It was so boring.
2- Stars (4/15)
Went into only knowing the title track Green Onions and left wishing that I only knew Green Onions
It's very pleasant background soundtrack for someone further on in life than present me
yucky
Sounded like I was at an old roller rink.
Like being stuck in a lift in the 1960s The title track is a classic, but the rest is just guitar riffs and hammond organ solos, like green onions themselves, probably okay in a mixed salad, but it isn't a meal
Can understand its significance considering when it came out, but not interesting in 2024
Green onions? Hammond cheese sandwich, more like 🙄 Real tasty as a quick snack; tiresome and bland as a multi course meal.
Nice Groovy beats Surprised that I know some of these songs or know songs that were inspired by these! With the lack of lyrics you can pretty much tell the story as you like from the title which is cool. <<< Rinky Dink, Comin’ home baby, One who really loves you
Didn't interest me
Not for me
What a terrible album. Honestly. All the songs are THE EXACT SAME! I could not bear to finish listening to it because it’s so damn boring! At least put some variation in your 12 track record. Geez
This album was fine. Just fine. There are no memorable tracks on it, and nothing that made me think "wow! this sounds pretty good!". It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't think it's an album that everyone needs to listen to, by any means.
Nicht meins. Blues, Rock, nervige Orgel.
Pleasant enough, but wouldn't necessarily come back to this album again any time soon. Largely instrumental covers of other people's work... Originality should factor into the listing of these albums in my opinion.
The title track is great, and instantly recognisable. The rest of the tracks are good but stay into movie soundtrack vibes occasionally. Maybe it's the lack of vocals? 'I Got A Woman' is definitely movie montage territory, veering close to Benny Hill. A couple of tracks in and I lost interest. 'Twist and Shout' was bad. Not sure when I'd listen to this again. Three 2.5 stars, rounded up to three.
This is basically on the 1001 albums list for the title track. The rest of it is mostly elevator music instrumentals featuring cover versions of other artists songs (and a couple more originals from Booker T. And The MG’s themselves). That’s kind of it. This didn’t do anything for me.
One amazing song. The rest is meh!
It’s an undisputed jam but it is the same jam over and over
ok. buy won't listen again
Nothing exciting about it.
Look up "Background Music" in the dictionary.
A little too Austin Powers for my liking. I got slightly interested with Twist and Shout. But not enough to dance. The bluesy elements work best. But still background music.
Green onions (the song) is quite iconic. It's in 1001 different movies. I don't need no Mo' Onions. A reprise of the iconic song but at a slower tempo? And not only 3 songs away from each other? It honestly took the magic away from first song. This album kind of plays the same thing over again. It's almost formulaic with the sounds that they come up with. "Ohhhh, here is that organ again with a slow bass walk." I was hoping this album wasn't an instrumental as it would have benefitted from something different Such as vocal melodies. I can hear tons of melodies thwt would work for vocals in this album. To be honest, the first song, amazing. Off to a great start but then it went downhill. I was quite disappointed with this record. I could be ok with never having to listen to this again. As an audio experience, I was bored. It's nice when music like this is paired with a visual. Be it seeing it live, in a movie... Etc. It's like jazz, its boring when you're not watching because there is obvious talent going on.
ugh
Love the title track (the hit), but the rest is typical of the times. A bunch of covers padding an album just to have an album. Must have been good background music at parties but it’s just uninspired now. Hopefully we’ll come back to them for the far more interesting McLenore Avenue project.
50/100 It sounds very fresh and the opening song is killer but it feels improvised and doesn't make for a good album listening experience.
1.5 hit wonder
not my jam
Wasn't in the mood for this one
Yeah whatever it's fine but kinda meh.
How many movies used “Green Onions” in it? I guess this is a pretty fun album to listen to once, not sure if it’s something you have to hear before you die though. I don’t think I’ve ever really listened to the whole thing beyond the title track, or if I have I don’t remember. First off I’m glad they included “Mo Onions” cause after two songs I was really missing “Green Onions”. There’s some great musicianship on here but just not my thing for more than a song. Glad this album is only 35mins, I was getting bored with it pretty quickly. On to the next one!
When I first saw the album name I got excited. I use green onions in almost every meal. They are a versitle food. This album makes me want to smoke a doobie and cut a rug. I bet they influenced The Braves' organ player, and probably all baseball organ players. My favorite tune is You Can't Sit Down. I sit down all day at work, so the prospect of me not being able to sit down is wonderful!
Fantastic title track, clearly. This was recognised and someone basically went, hey, let's make an album - this is an engine powerful enough to pull a goddamn train of an album. The result, the rest of the songs is just pulled along unremarkably. It doesn't hurt to have it in the background while the world passes you by. This band can play, they do, but there's just not much else here. The whole drama is captured on the cover: A pile of veg of the kind that essentially supports other parts of a dish.
Some decent jams (of course the title track is an all-timer), but mostly reminded me of what a baseball organist listens to for inspiration.
I like the title track. Always have. The rest is fine but gets a bit too repetitive after a while. There’s a reason only “Green Onions” popped from this. 2.5/5
Some of it sounded familiar but I know I’ve never listened to this. Good background music but forgettable.
2.5 Felt like more of a novelty record more than anything else. Like those Red Hot Chilli Pipers who do bag pipe covers, haha. Green Onions (the song) is a great but I think Ive heard it ten million times in my life. And the band has great players, but the album is not something I will seek out to listen cover to cover.
Not overly exciting.
They obviously were very excited about thier shiny new hammond organ, and I understand but the novelty wears off by the 2nd track.
Another lovely album of background music, but not interesting or attention-grabbing enough to be more than that.
Average and of course the track Green Onions is iconic
Veel van hetzelfde, beetje veel gepingel
close to a 3 but could i write poetry to it? n
A little Hammond goes a long way. A unique sound that starts to feel like novelty music after a while. Edges close to being carousel music or a soap opera theme. I like Green Onions a lot, obviously, and their Christmas album is great.
Some cool stuff here. A perfect album for getting chores done. Nice to have an album that gives the electric organ a chance to shine.
dull
On one hand, the musicianship is top notch and the idea behind the main theme is great. On the other, at a brief 35 minutes, it really loses steam halfway through when it shouldn't. Used it's best idea first and it shows.
'Green Onion' is really cool, but the rest is pretty bland unfortunately. Even the electric organ and piano couldn't save this one. I feel that my opinion was also heavily dragged down when I found out it's mostly covers, and I only think that can take you so far. The 'Twist and Shout' one was horrible, by the way. In summary it had great potential, but perhaps a whole album of this just was a bit too much. Plus, for some reason it feels a bit like circus music or something less serious. Maybe because 'Green Onion' has been used as soundtrack in sneaky scenes in movies or something.
Unfair to call it a "one-trick-pony" but by the third track I was tired of the organ. Sure the title track is iconic but I wasn't too convinced by the numerous covers on this album. It's not bad it just doesn't grab my attention. Strong 2 star.
Everyone knows Green Onions. Cute but quite samey. Listens: 1 Fave Track: Green Onions Rating: 2
One superclassic song and a great sound, but always find this album as a whole a bit boring (even though it is short) and I like these tracks more on Stax compilations.
The opening is classic, the rest largely unremarkable.
The title track is sorta famous, I think? At least, I've heard it before and I have no clue who this band is. Furthermore, the second song, Ricky Dink, has some parts that are very familiar to me even though I'm fairly sure I've never heard the entire song. The third song is I Got A Woman, which is a cover of a Ray Charles song. It took this long for me to be sure that that this is just an instrumental album. It's kind of catchy, but it's a lot of organ playing, which gets old fast. Otherwise, it's just kind of there, you know? I'm not sure what's special about this album other than the fact that it appears to be a vehicle for promoting the organ, which doesn't really scratch any of my personal itches. Listening more through the album, it seems like it's very bluesy but distinctly, like, 60s rock organ bluesy. It's not my jam, but I think I can see why it was included in this list, because it is kind of its own thing, but at the same time, there appear to be several covers, which is the opposite if "it's own thing." I don't know. I'll never listen to it again. 2.5 stars.
Iconic instrumentals but I don’t see y one would listen to this. Just instrumentals
The title track was good but the rest of the album was covers are reprise of green onions. 2/5.
Interesting that we got an entirely instrumental album on this list; I can't recall any others so far. Some great organ playing and solid vibes to have on in the background here, but not much more other than that. And I get the same feeling I've had with plenty of other albums on this list; this whole album is only here because it has one insanely popular song (in this case Green Onions because of it's ample use in TV, Movies, and commercials) and the whole album is just tossed on the list, despite nothing comes close to the same level of quality as the one breakout single. Which is disingenuous to just arbitrarily say the source of one important song is wholly as important, when it's just not. As I've said before on this list, just because you find a $20 bill in a public trash can doesn't mean everything else in the trash can is automatically worth the value of the $20 bill.
RATING SYSTEM: 1*: Horrible 2*: Bad 3*: Middle of the road 4*: Good 5*: Amazing ALBUM 1: GREEN ONIONS Rating: 2* This album isn't unenjoyable, but it's as bland as elevator music. Although it has a pretty nice (and classic) title track, the other songs are just somewhat enjoyable but pretty boring covers that only really work as background music. It's not that I dislike instrumentals, or that I found the album super draining to listen to, but it didn't do anything for me, and it was all kind of samey. I wouldn't want to relisten again. Even the pretty alright title track isn't something I can see myself going back to. I was planning to give it a 3, but the album was so uninteresting, and I honestly think it might deserve a 2. The title track and the fact that it's so (boringly) inoffensive (making it still somewhat enjoyable but not interesting) gives it a few points. If I could, I would give it 2.5*, but I chose to round it down. It's just kinda subpar, but I wouldn't call it bad.
Album Nr. 76 Etwas langweilig.
like me some bam bam baw
Fun and playful music but it doesn't take too long before the fatigue from the overly dominant electric organ sets in and things get kind of same-y, tedious and boring.
Green Onions by far the best track, all the rest fall short and a few of them just blend into one another. 2 stars purely for Green Onions.
Some great songs, but a bit boaring after a while.
2/ 2.5
Cocktail lounge cover band
Lo-Fi Organ Jazz 60er Jahre. 2 Sterne wg. 'Lonely Avenue'
Green onions is one of my all time favorites but the rest of the album was a little too churchy and sleepy for me.
Booker T. & The MG's are the backbone of the Memphis sound. Donald "Duck" Dunn in one of my main influences as a bass player. With that said, I prefer them as a backing band for a great singer than as a solo act. This is a good album and worth a listen every now and then as background music but I wouldn't put it up there as one of my favorites for the genre.
Ok green onions is a classic but a whole album of hammond organ greatest hits is a bit much. Like a scene from Phoenix nights I picture a welder by day wearing a gold velvet jacket playing a bontempi keyboard in between rounds of bingo.
Enjoyed this more than I thought, but I think that's from recognising a few songs from films or tv, and getting that weird excited 'ooo I know something' feeling.
I wanted to like this. God knows that Green Onions is an absolute belter of a track. The rest of the album just couldn't live up to it.
I really wanted to like this album. I thought there was so many really creative elements to this one. I can’t get past the fact of how much they just mash the synth-keyboard button though and it really starts to detract from the other performances. By the end of it I felt like I was trapped in a fun house mirror maze at a minor league baseball game.
Chill but didn’t pull me in
One good original and a bunch of ok covers.
Kinda checked out here. Obviously, an iconic title track, but not a whole lot else that really grabbed my attention. Found myself waiting for it to be over about half way through.
This was lovely listening to. I was 3 or 4 years old when this recorded. Don't remember either of my parents listening to this stuff but I did hear this in different places growing to with them. Restaurants, bowling alleys, at my uncle's house on a Saturday night. Good memories of an interesting sound that fills the gaps of memories filled with the music my parents liked, and the music I grew to enjoy. 3 stars.
I don't know about this one. Seems suspect.
Sounds like the 7th inning stretch of a tied baseball game.
35 minutes of instrumental music, where the majority are covers. And lesser versions as well, I might add. And after hearing Poison Idea’s cover of Green Onion, the original pales in comparison. Boring.
I realize the Hammond organ was all the rage back then, but I just can't get used to the annoying sound. It's soooo much better when the guitarist takes over...
1. green onionz - 2.5 2. rinky dink - 1 3. i got a uuoman - 1 4. mo onionz - 1 5. tuuizt and zhout - 0 6. behave yourzelf - 2 7. ztranger - 1 8. lonely avenue - 1.5 9. lovez you - 1 10. zit douun - 1 11. a friend - 1 12. coming home - 2
It’s just organ and guitars. It’s a cool groove and the title track alone goes straight into the library but the pace, instrumentation and mood never really shifts and it didn’t really stick with me. Glad to have found it. Will be moving on, thanks.
Meh
Ok, Mo' Onions is just (as the title implies) another version of Green Onions. Other than those two, the rest are a bit weaker. I don't think you can make good instrumental songs simply by taking a song with a vocal and playing the vocal line on an instrument; I think good instrumentals tend to be designed as instrumentals from the ground up.
Rock 'n Roll, flott, Orgel ohne Gesang, 1962 -> 2
2.4/5 Best Track: Green Onions
A slice of a musical era. Interesting to me for that reason only. Not really something I want to listen to again.
Fine but instrumental music is not really for me, I got kinda bored. When the album finished and Spotify started playing something else, I didn't even realise
Sipulien ja lämpimän trebleisyyden voimalla matala 2, mutta on vaikea kuvitella tilanteita, joissa laittaisin tämän levynä soimaan.
I like the title track, the dumb organ on every song kind of ruins the album for me. 2.5
Although all of the songs sound remarkably the same it’s still kind of a fun listen.
It’s not my style
Muzak
Lots of decent songs in isolation, but as an album pretty boring.
I’m a lyric guy, this album while the music is good I would not put this on at any point in my life. It is extremely short, background music. Not bad but not what I would consider in the top albums of all time. 2/5 (At least the music is good).
Its difficult because this is clearly a very influential and iconic album from the 60s, that helped shape music as it is today. But it's also fucking boring
Instrumental album w/songs I've heard but didn't know who performed them. Some good and some not as good so good. 2
Lovely thick and strident organ melodies but as a whole it feels like it’s going through the motion of standards.
Only one Song, which fit to me.
These guys can play funk, just sounded a little boring against all of these other great ones.
Classic songs but too much organ for me.
Easy listening
I have probably heard all of these songs throughout my life. Didn't hate it, but would instantly skip any of these songs if I heard them in the wild
have liked the first song for years still not convinced that the other 11 songs arent just the same song with different names
5/10 Felt like being put on hold for 40 minutes Highlights: Comin' Home Baby
sounds like carnival music. kind of boring.
Lonely avenue <3
Fun album; it starts off strong (Green Onions is awesome), but the organ/no vocals gets stake after a few songs. Also, not a huge fan of the fact that this album is - with the exception of three songs - mostly covers of previous songs that are not quite as good as the originals.
ok
Nice instrumentals, good background listen. I know instrumentals were very popular in the early 60s. It's a tad cartoony at times with the organ being the lead instrument.
For 1962 this is smooth as hell. "Green Onions" is probably the best groove ever recorded. The rest of the album was meh; it hasn't aged that well. The biggest issue is the same warble sound from the keyboard on every track. It sounds like something that you would hear over the P.A. at a minor-league baseball game.
kinda boring. everyone knows the first song on the album.

2.3 - Feel like this gets a bit too much love for me. Maybe it’s just not for me
Heismusikk?
I Got No Thoughts On This
Wow, this was a letdown. Even the other songs I knew sounded boring on this album.
A classic!! Recognised a lot of tunes from TV and stuff. But I like my songs with lyrics.
Funky.
What the fuck was this. I was so confused for the first few songs because I knew I recognized them but I didn't know where from. Im honestly still confused because I feel like I have heard all of these songs in movies or youtube videos. I didn't hate listening to it but I definitely wouldn't turn any of these songs on just because. 2/5
This album is a glorified compilation of royalty-free music. It wasn't unenjoyable to listen to, and I even recognized a couple of the tracks, but everything felt so uninspired and robotic. I can only listen to a certain amount of 12-bar-blues variations without any lyrics. T1- "Green Onions" is going on the playlist. What a waste of a spot on this list. 2/5
Nicht mein Ding, zu Blues Rock dudelig
Summary: Very simplistic – too much so. Title/opening track is iconic and played to perfection, but most of the other tracks really aren't memorable. Instrumentation and performance consistently plays it safe, to the detriment of interest in any of the tracks. Lack of vocals is fine, but it does leave a higher demand of interest in the other instruments, which just isn't there. The tracks could be ordered better as well – tracks 6/7/8 sound very similar. Green Onions: Iconic! Warm atmosphere created with the organ. Other instruments give the head melody (played by organ) plenty of space. Guitar soloing could be better – very rhythmically repetitive, although that could be explained by this section not actually being a solo at all. (Whoops.) Organ section comes back, and it's brilliant. Fade-out is choppy. Rinky Dink: Heart and Soul chords. Organs are at the forefront again, with a less memorable melody than the previous track. Tropical feel. Feels like it should have vocals. Love the guitar solo. I Got a Woman: fun quick drums and guitar. Jammy. Easy to lose myself to the groove. Mo' Onions: Discount version of the opening track. At least, I thought that at first. Would've preferred this to be the closing track or immediately follow Green Onions, but it's a perfectly fine reprise. Lots of repetition here. I think they knew the title track was their strongest – maybe a better idea to make that one longer (merge tracks?) instead of this separate one. Filler? Nice filler, for sure. Twist and Shout: A cover of the track we all know and love. The Beatles did it better, although a shoutout to the organ for doing its darnedest. Some cool guitar fills at around 1:20 – wish they kept going with those. Behave Yourself: first time where I found myself really enjoying the bass. Layered organ also pleasant, and swing composition is a nice change of pace. Still too simplistic for my taste. Props to the organ melody in the last minute for going ham. Stranger on the Shore: Feels like a continuation of the previous track (same swung tempo). Reverb on guitar. Wacky chords. Otherwise, kind of boring :( I imagine this works great as a (jazz) standard, but not with this band. Lonely Avenue: Again, same tempo+swing as the previous two tracks. Intentional? Getting hard to maintain interest at this point. Relaxed. One Who Really Loves You: Whew - a change in pace! I enjoyed this one more than I probably should have – almost sounds video game soundtrack-esque. Production quality on guitar is muted and brings it down substantially. You Can't Sit Down: upbeat 12-bar. Green Onions's hyperactive cousin. First piece that makes use of (relative) silence, around the 2-minute mark – and fairly successfully. One of the stronger tracks. A Woman, a Lover, a Friend: I didn't have much to say about this one. Nothing particularly bad, just uninteresting. Solid ending. Comin' Home Baby: Love the composition. The playing is pretty lightweight - the lower held notes on the organ could be brought forward for a substantially heavier (and, in my opinion, better) sound. Really good guitar solo. I so wish it kept going higher towards its climax.
Can't believe this album is from 1962. Classic, groovy blues that defined the Stax label and was so influential on the late 1960's psychedelic sound and the later funk explosion in the 1970s. The album is weak and repetitive after Green Onions. Hammond organ, the late fifties jazz drumming, and dated guitar tone and technique in the solos.
Eh, not my style at all. Green Onions is obviously a famous instrumental.
naja. bisschen nerviges rumgedudel
2/3
Did not realize green onions was a full album and not a single. Mixed sound reminiscent of 50's style love songs and 70's keyboard funk. Im guessing there isn't a single lyric sang on this entire album. I like how they just put the most popular song first on the album and then expected everyone to make their purchase based on that; every song sounds almost exactly the same. I feel like I'm at a classic American baseball game. Overall a very boring listen, though I guess I could see the significance of the impact it may have made at the time. And yes, not a single lyric was spoken.
I don't think I'm that big of a fan of Green Onions. The songs all sounded the same and not a single one really stood out to me (except for You Can't Sit Down). Normally, Instrumental albums can be good but they need to have some kind of way to keep the songs from sounding too similar and this album unfortunately does not have that. It was pleasant to listen to but not very interesting at all. Best Song: You Can't Sit Down Worst Song: Stranger on the Shore

I don't really think blues is for me. Some nice moments but overall it didn't do much for me
Sounds very dated.
Eh. Pretty samey throughout. Not bad. The one song everyone knows is in there... meh. Meh. ... ... yeah. Meh.
Green onions great, the rest just background muzak
Meh
- oh this song is called Green Onions? Iconic - borderline carnival music - good vibes
It's MLB's greatest hits, folks!
Title track Green Onions is always gonna be a default classic track for me... but the rest of the album... with that Hammond organ sound... is just some straight out of a night in the Phoenix Night club with Brian Potter.... its just a 60 year old sound that hasn't travelled well.
Not bad background music. Prob would sound pretty good at a BBQ in the sun
I can understand its influence, but it's not highly enjoyable listening, on a personal level. Top/Bottom songs: none
Gee whiz, it's rock 'n' roll and it's here to stay. Groovy guitar and keyboard.
I’m not a huge fan of instrumental albums. Some parts were fine but it was mostly boring to me.
Picked a tone and just. Stuck. With it.
I mean yeah there's that one track, but then it's just instrumentals of other peoples' songs. What's the point?
It wasn't unpleasant to listen to, just quite boring and I'm not really sure what this is doing on this list but maybe that is my ignorance talking.
Pretty good for 1962. Love the electric/Wurlitzer piano throughout. Outside of the first track, not much to latch onto.
Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: Not really, some relaxing sounds but ultimately quite boring for me Favourite song: Track 1 - Green Onions
was going to give this three but compared to the other album with that score this has a lot less hits and a lot more misses, green onions the song is obviously a classic but other than that this is fairly boring if pleasant background music
I mean it was good. All instrumentals on that classic 60s keyboard. 30 minutes of groovin', mostly covers. I definitely learned the title track from The Sandlot
Debut album released in 1962. While you can't fault the opening title track, the rest of the album drifts off in a feeling of rinse and repeat.
A real disappointment other than the classic title track. Mostly covers.
1 legendary song a and a bunch of barebones Hammond organ covers. the sound of a tongue-in-cheek David Lynch scene where you're amused, confused, and bored simultaneously.
Hahaha this drove me kinda insane. It's not bad, I don't know, I just can't fathom ever wanting to throw this on. Like, these were HITS. Anyway. Very strange. One and a half. Fave track: Green Onions
nothing has really caught my attention i have been liking the names rinky dink was decent i love organ playing and hammond stuff but this wasnt my sort of thing i dont think stranger on the shore was very relaxing however one who really loves you was good too comin home baby was very good 2 stars i think
Booker T. recorded this at the age of 17. Let that sink in. The title track is instantly recognizable and probably one of the greatest instrumentals out there. But while I won’t hesitate to recognize Booker T. for being the Hammond-genius that he is, the formula very quickly becomes too boring and predictable. I love many of the songs individually. As an album, I’m not so sure.
If you like the same organ riff over and over again with a side of tacky cover song then this album is for you!
30 mins of variations of the same song with a few covers chucked in.
Hammond organ is an exceptionally grating sound to build an entire record around
Some great recognizable tunes, but not the type of instrumental I can listen to for an entire album.
Elevator Music. Nothing special IMO.
Eh, it's okay. Again, not really my music but it works as background noise for me. (Sorry.)
It was pleasant enough, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to this again. Really grateful there were no lyrics, as singing would have made this really dated I think.
This is basically an album of instrumental covers plus the title track. I gave it an extra star just for that song.
It started OK but got old fast...
Best Song: Twist and Shout. Honestly, I liked that I could recognize it. Worst Song: Stranger on the Shore. Unbearably sleepy. Overall: Evidently this is not the genre for me. Without any vocals, this just felt like the blues that was missing one key element.
Nice enough but sounded too much like fairground music by the end.
Groovy instrumental record!
Probably influential for hammond organ players, but a little too noodly blues for me.
Is this the music they play during intermissions in AM radio broadcasts of baseball games?
Green Onions and Mo' Onions are the only tracks worth time in this experiment. Everything else just sounded like a cheap organ at a dive bar.
Loved the titular song, but everything else felt repetitive and like I was listening to the same thing over and over again. 2 stars.
First song a cracker.
Outstanding opener, so familiar. High expectations sadly not met, the rest was rather samey and disappointing.
Green Onions is a legendary track, but the rest of the album was, frankly, a disappointment.
Almost every track feels like filler
Green Onions the song is a work of genius. The Stax house band at its finest. These musicians are legendary. This album, not so much. After the high of the iconic title track it quickly descends into elevator music. It's just not that interesting.
Yeah, no. I know it’s supposed to be a classic but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.
Uniquement instrumental.
Not a big instrumental albums guy but this had some good songs.
Nothing great here. I perked up only after the album ended and Spotify played something like it.
Boring. Might have been groundbreaking 60 years ago but now it’s just fancy elevator music.
Classic blues‘y RnB
Ha, one legend and a load of supermarket music
Background music only for me. Not sure when I'd ever want to listen to this.
Nice background music but a whole album of hammond organ isn't for me... and as good as the 3 original songs are, not enough to warrant a respectable score
I was feeling critical so I chose this to make myself feel important after I moved my cursor over the second star and hit "vote" with the confidence of a male entering a bar wearing khakis and a flannel over a gray hoodie. But I liked it more than anticipated. I was toggling between a 2 or 3, because it started out promising, but lost it towards the end. I would give it a 2.5, but I can't quite bring myself to give it a 3, so we're back where we started. Moves made: 2 Girls talked to: -5 "Ooh she's bad": 43
Pretty boring, I’d play it for background music. The first song sounded familiar, but then again most sounded the same so I’m not sure which one I know from the yesteryears.
Very well known stuff
mid, nothing to it really
I'm not a very large fan of jamming albums. It's interesting hearing the musicianship, but I prefer more structure.
I always think of the movie The Sandlot when I hear Green Onions.
Best part about these older albums is how short the songs are. Makes them far more digestible. This album seems to definitely have some iconic riffs in it, as often a song would start then I would recognize it moments later. Issue is that you never expect these riffs to be a small part of another two to three minutes. I mean, nothing overstays it's welcome, but nothing is extremely notable either, past the before mentioned riffs.
weird asf i dont fw it
Instrumentals, although a few recognisable and interesting ones. Not great, other than as background music I guess.
As much as I like the first song, the rest of the album doesn't really live up to it. I think it's got a great groove and style which was probably very influential. Highlight: 1.
THIS WAS BORING BOOOOOOO 4/10
Title track is ace. Otherwise its all a bit lame. The Hammond loses its initial love as you progress through the tracks. Similar slow plodding beats and some lazy covers. Not impressed. 2
Groovy
While the record may have been reflective of its era, its era lacked.
Thought I was going to love this but really couldn't take much of the rinky dink organ sound. It makes everything sound like a bad wedding covers band.
I do understand this is a classic album. While I love the instrumentals, every song just sounds the same after awhile.
Groovy organ here and there, but missing vocals. Norring somehow
I like the electrical keyboard as much as the next person...But basically a whole album of it begins to get too much...
There’s only so much organ a dude can take in one…. And this is too much!!
bit meh
No real shock that this is a session band's album. Felt like an extended jamming session to surround the title track. Interesting blues, jazz, R&B etc. Can see how this became influential but there's not enough substance in this album.
I don't think I had heard anything by this group aside from Green Onions and Mo' Onions! I didn't realize instrumental music was their entire jam! Green Onions is one of those songs that everybody knows. It's iconic, funky, and the organ solo just GOES FOR IT. Ultimately, I think the concept of instrumental funk is completely worthy of this project. As far as personal enjoyment, I thought it was just okay.
I had heard the title track several times and liked it. Didn't realize the whole album was just the same organ sound over and over again.
Blues standards by hammond organ. Some of the tracks work; some don't.
Ihan hauska
To be honest, I am a bit confused how this ended up on this list. It's kind of just fine to listen to, but most of the songs are instrumental covers of better songs. 3/10
Organetto a gogo.
Like the funkiest end of the pier band you've ever heard. You can decide if that's a good or bad thing. Best Tracks: Green Onions; Rinky Dink; Mo' Onions
Background music, with a couple of through lines to some music I do like, but not much else pulling me back.
A whole lot of nothing really
Kinda monotonous. Certainly some talent there, but I've heard enough organ-centric music at church to last a lifetime. I wish they played like this at church but still, not something I enjoyed listening to. Church or this album.
Not my style, but cool
“The album features only instrumental songs and features Steve Cropper playing a Fender Telecaster.” Fancy.
Good but a little on the repetitive side. A lot of the songs sound the same.
Same same sounding background type music, lots of covers
"Green Onions" is still a phenomenal instrumental, but this album feels like the product of a record thrown together after an unexpected hit single. Everything here is fine, but it's all just wallpaper, or at least interesting if you recognize the song. There's even an attempt at a second lightning strike with "Mo' Onions". It's... fine. Probably wouldn't have thrown it on this list. Favorite tracks: "Green Onions", "I Got A Woman"
Just not my thing
I actually kind of actively dislike this album. it was kind of boring in the first place and one of the songs I can’t remember which one actually really hurt my ears it like screeched so I don’t really love it
meh, instrumental, good songs sure, none of theirs. I'll give 2 cause Booker T was a great wrestler
Meh
not for me
not my thing.
It’s an album packed full of covers we are all aware of. I struggle with too much funkiness and the unique sound and constant organ grow wearing on me.
A pretty flat collection of 12-bar blues. However, both the first and last track are built around riffs / progressions that feature in probably 100 future songs.
It's quite boring. I think I've tried to listen to it before (a long time ago), and felt the same. Title track bangs though.
Overall, I quite liked the music but as a collection of songs I found it too repetitive & similar. Perfect background music!
Some enjoyable stuff. As an album, just too much of the same.
During the panini I discovered you can regrow green onion stumps if you place them in a small amount of water in indirect sunlight. Green onions forever. If you put this album in water and indirect sunlight it grows a bud light and a easy going attitude. Great BBQ music. C
again no lyrics, I thought it was okay.
Dull.
I didn't know what to expect from this, but it's a bit disappointing, isn't it? Nothing quite has the prowl and strut of the title tracks, and whilst some of the soul covers are decent - especially the Ray Charles cut - too much is half a step away from elevator music. Often, older music benefits from a more sparse, 'live' sounding production, but not in this instance - it's a tinny and undeveloped sounding album.
would have loved some lyrics to go with this
