Reviews (page 8 of 8)

I’ll tell you what is rubbish, Suede. And being that Blur were somehow losing a competition with Suede is embarrassing, yet here we are. Attention r/agedlikemilk: Blur’s Damon Albarn thought the popularity of grunge would soon fade. With a take like that, it’s no wonder that this album is also rubbish. I find the music boring and the vocals too.

blur is rubbish

Not my usual thing but found myself getting into it. Bit of a lengthy one though

Not my favorite.

Another day, another Britpop album! Surely you don't have to hear ALL of them before you die... admittedly this album was better than some others in the genre. My top pick is 'Blue Jeans', a nice slow song for a change, but I also liked the opening track 'For Tomorrow'.

I wasn't amazed by it at all. It's perfectly in the middle of the road but I kinda hoped for more.

Did not like

With how mythologized Blur is it's kind of shocking how little this did for me. Maybe because this is an earlier effort... I don't know. I would have to justify a three pretty hard so I'm giving it a two - mainly because of how revered this band is.

Nervt mich sehr

I dunno, man, I consider myself a bit of an anglophile, musically and I like the specific "British-ness" of the Kinks and Pulp and other groups, but something about Blur is just a bit much for me.

Ugh - not aged well

I've always been like Marvin in "Pulp Fiction" when it came to the great Blur vs. Oasis debate. Man, I don't even have an opinion. And then one day John Travolta accidently shot me in the face, and I've been opinionated ever since. They're both overrated, but Oasis wins major points for "Wonderwall" alone. "Wonderwall" is a stone cold classic. And after getting a few of their albums from this list, it's become clear that Blur doesn't have a song of that caliber in their catalog. The best thing about this album is that it doesn't have "Song 2", perhaps Blur's best known song that could be charming if it wasn't so annoying. And this album is just trying a little too hard to be interesting. I enjoyed the hidden instrumental track, and the Rod Stewart cover on the reissue wasn't horrible.

This album really makes you feel like modern life is rubbish. Vocals sound like dog water and the album was just long enough to give me a headache. 4/10

This album was just bland to me. I haven't been exposed to much Blur, but I thought they were better than this.

Meh, there wasn't anything on this album that impressed me.

I listened to this very seldom in my Blur phase, and now I understand why I didn't remember it. The songs are bland. I feel they developed some of the ideas present here more effectively in later albums.

I like Blur, but this was just 'ok'. It reinforces my impression that they are a great 'singles' band, but not so great in terms of albums. Lets wait and see if 'Parklife' changes my mind... 2.5/5

"Chem World" is catchy and the little wonky piano ditty seems like a window into Albarn's Gorillaz output. However, there are alot of mediocre tunes on here which leads to a tiring listen on this overly length album. 🌟🌟

Igual larga vida a Damon Albarn. No hace falta explicar por qué.

Modern life is indeed rubbish much like most of this album apart from the first song. I’d rather be violated by a horse than have to listen to it in its entirety again. Maybe some Phil Daniels vocals would improve it. He was always my favourite from blur. Such a shame he only appeared on one song.

Good. Not excited about it.

Meh. On paper I should love this.

Didn't do much for me and had nothing that really stood out. Best track: Chemical World (+ Intermission)

Gotta admit I didn't listen to all of this but yeh I get it it's Blur.

Guitarreo a diestro y siniestro. Sonido plano.

uh, no thanks, it's like a less charming/instrumentally overwhelming/cacaphonic beatles experience

Not sure about this, it's ok but there are far better blur albums.

Blur are just meh!

Just not very entertaining or catchy. A bit long and nothing i would really turn back to.

Meh 90s alt rock

Helt ok britpop.

Was hoping for the high level of songs like song 2 and the like but never really got going

Not feelin it

annoying omg

it's blur..meh... nothing awful, some catchy tunes, but ultimately nothing stand out

This sounded arrogant and un-fun.

I have listened as attentively as I could to this album (ie while getting bored to frustration with most of the songs). Looking at reviews here, I can see it has keen fans, as well as emphatic detractors, and lots of people giving it three stars - I wanted to see if I could get what others were appreciating. I give the album some credit for having a theme and wanting to do some story-telling, or at least scene-setting. I'm kinda signed up for critique of shallow consumerism. But I think the criticisms here are shallow, the characters one-dimensional, the lyrics ineptly expressed and overly repetitive. (On Genius, some of these songs with opaque lyrics have no significant commentary, suggesting there are no "hidden depths" to the 'quirky' phrases - eg Miss America "plucking hours from the sky" means what? no-one knows.) I'm not English, so I won't comment on the accusations of fake Cockney, but I will say the singing style doesn't appeal to me. I'm guessing these songs would like to be early David Bowie (eg Life On Mars), or The Kinks (eg Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire), but I'd far rather listen to actual Bowie or Kinks than this. The music is also frustrating. There are mildly noisy guitars, but like an advertising firm's idea of noisy guitars (that don't really intrude). Songs with one potentially appealing riff but no counterplay, no satisfying chorus. Very limited vocabulary of chord structures. Some studio effects and noises not integrated with songs. I searched in vain for a song I could consider my favourite: I was hoping to like Chemical World on a second listen, on the basis of the first half (decent riff, though goes nowhere much) but the piano-led second half really is rubbish - it's a twee piano line, the speeding up to crash is appallingly mishandled, no emotional impact and all too long. Why didn't someone tell them that it was maybe worth trying, but it didn't work out, so they should cut it from the song?? Overall, as there's no song I can comfortably sit through, I'll say for me it's Bad, 1/10.

My heart genuinely sank when I saw the Spotify runtime - 2.25 HOURS of Britslop. Thank fuck it's only the first disc I had to get through. Unfortunately an hour of this shit is still an hour too long. I was so over this shit album by Chemical World. The songwriting on this album is just dreadful man. British people should have been banned from making music in the 90's. I gave up on this. Terrible.

OMG, this was rubbish. Maybe if it didn’t go on and on, I would not have hated it so much. Nah. It could have been 20 minutes and it still would be rubbish.

This album makes me think Oasis is the best band ever and I don't really like Oasis. This album is too british for me. Nothing special at all, just boring. Too long. It's not awful, just too boring and too british. I didn't like it.

Yk what man modern life is fucking rubbish. Holy shit I have to listen to a bunch of brits croon for 2 FUCKING HOURS?? HOLY SHIT WHAT COULD AN ENLGISHMAN POSSIBLE HAVE TO SING ABOUT FOR THAT LONG?? THE MONARCHY?? RAIN?? FISH AND FUCKING CHIPS?? Literally what the fuck. God just kill me now. I don't think this is necessary. This makes modern life rubbish. What a banger for an 100th album milestone. Fuck. Nearly 10% through and this is what I fucking get for it?? God 33 fucking songs?? What could this possibly be about. Why do I need to her this before I die. Before the cows fucking come home?? Is this a kids cartoon?? I hate the brits. Why tf are they like this. Oh god. This is genuinely making me mad. Fuck at least give me Oasis again not the shittier shitty britpop band. Fuck. I am passionate in my dislike for shitty 90s white rock. Was the 70s/80s/90s genuinely just a cesspool of shitty white rock hailed as groundbreaking and pioneering. I guess some of it's interesting but not enough to sit through two fucking hours holy shit. God this is insufferable. I say all that like music isn't still a shitty white cesspool. This is just Sombr for old people I guess. Fml. I honestly, genuinely, sincerely don't careeeee. Like this is just plainly not that interesting. Fuck me mate. And naturally it was on fucking shuffle. Fuck off. Advert?? Do I look like I wanna hear a song about fucking ads? What tf did fat people ever do to these guys holy shit. Fuck man. Just hootin and hollerin in a really fuckin bad way actually. Holy shit I'm not even finished the first fucking disk. I would not pay 5 fucking dollars for this flaming bullshit. It's listenable. That's the most I can fucking give it. I can't give it one star because the other one stars genuinely make my ears bleed and this ones not quite that bad, but actually no fuck that I am going to give it one star because I fucking hate it. I would probably give it 2 if I was in a better mood but I'm fucking not because of this fucking album so. We'll see. Why do they genuinely sound like they're trying to be the british wiggles. Fuck you the wiggles could make better music than this, they probably do. They have me writing fucking essays as a testament to their incompetence. Oh my days. Fuck off. Did they even try to make it good? It feels like they just did some absolute fucking bullshit in the studio and had nothing fucking else to put on the album so they just slapped some shit from a butt on top and sent it off. Fuck OFF. It's even worse somehow that every individual component is somewhat fine, like nothing is special but everything is just meh, the way they've put it all together is just so fucking repulsive. Jai fucking hind cunts. Did they get the fucking tabla for this shit. I wrote jai hind before they even brought out the fucking tablas. THEYRE ALL STILL ALIVE?? Fuck those cunts. Holy shit. Fuck all the way off. Favourite: Oily Water Least favourite: Hard to choose from so many fucking options

Album 149. Modern Life Is Rubbish (https://open.spotify.com/album/2gu1tAkUSoe5zTJNM0qU3g?si=hiL1n7FwRi-UpTV8sScS2Q) — Blur (1993) No, fuck these guys — 33 songs and 2 hr 18 min. I listened to a couple of songs, once again realized I don't like the sound of it and skimmed through the rest just to get through it . This album is rubbish. For me. 1/5 No liked songs

SO LONG. And for what?? The most generic sounding alt rock in the world. This was a slog. It started as a 2 for me and dropped for the sheer length

1. Okay, here we go. It's a little too late in the night to do this but, nevertheless, she persevered. This first one is not great. 2. Nope. 3. no. 4. nah. 5. No, this is nothing. I always knew oasis was better.

Damon Albarn is Rubbish, amiright?

not a fan

Blue’s Pablo Honey. An Ok album of forgettable indie that pales in comparison to later work

This album is insulting! Let me explain, there are so many great albums by so many great artists on this list. New artists I’m only now discovering, a few albums by artists I knew but needed to be more familiar with, and even albums from artists I thought I didn’t like that turn out to be really good. And then there’s Blur. Boring and mundane blur. I don’t think there’s a more underwhelming and unremarkable bands of all time. Every time one of their albums come up on this list I become less and less interested or impressed with them. For what it’s worth, I do genuinely think “Song 2” is one of the best rock songs of the 2000s. But we have come so far and left blur in the dust of time. I don’t find the singer to be impressive or remarkable, but he manages to be the bare minimum, which I don’t think is noteworthy. There’s just so many better albums and bands and even genres that are left off this list so this square and dry disappointment can be on this list. It’s literally insulting to me that there is not single album by The OCs or Primus on this list but they manage to fit this crap on the list. Honestly I lost a little bit of respect for this list after this album…

arent these guy who were rude to nardwar...

Mis-titled. Should be Blur: Our music is rubbish. 1.

I somehow ended up with two Blur albums in a row (the nature of randomness). I wasn't a big fan of Parklife, but this was a step down in every way. Just generally bland and forgettable, I genuinely don't understand why this album would be considered an all-time top 1000. It's also crazy to me that Damon would go on to write such interesting music with the Gorillaz!

This album has similarities to modern life

Maybe its listening to it on a Monday morning, but I just found it awfully grating

blur is rubbish

I know the creators of this list have a hard on for Damon Albarn, but having 3 albums from Blur plus Gorillaz plus a handful of random side projects by him is way over the top. The only Blur album that needed to be on this list is their self titled album. Full stop. Further, this is definitely their weakest offering. Pass.

Can't do blur

They remind me of Charlie's band on Lost, Drive Shaft, and Drive Shaft was more interesting even though they only had one song.  I also think that they tried to incorporate an old British sound, but only because someone suggested, not because they liked it.

damon albarn made one good thing ever and it was gorillaz

I was so bored.

A bad album is one thing, but a bad double album? I can't believe I sat through 2 hours of meandering uninteresting music. Not a single memorable song on here. At least Blur is correct in their assessment that modern life is rubbish, unfortunately so is this album.

Repetitive, from the lyrics to the guitar riffs. Had a very "garage band" quality, couldn't get past the first few songs.

Don't like them at all

How many fucking Blur albums do I need to hear before I die?????? ^ I wrote that before I even opened the album. 33 songs and 2+ hours LMAO fuck you I am not listening.

Apologies for falling for it, but it remains insane that there was ever some kind of competition or comparison between this band and Oasis. This was dreadful at all times.

I am quite certain I've listened to this twice now and retained none of it. I am unable to believe that in this list full of British general-rock-type bands we also needed this album.

So I was going through this album thinking it was awful, I accidentally hit a different track and couldn’t find out where I was so I just stopped and that’s enough for me.

Meh. Typical 90s music.

Meh , pretty rubbish

This album is rubbish. I'm assuming this joke has already been made a million times, but it needed to be said again

Rating: 1 Notable songs: at a push "For Tomorrow" The album is so lacklustre and full of nonsense. Its just filler on filler.

I think I’m starting to understand all the hate directed at britpop.

i refuse to spend anymore time on the planet listening to blur by conscious choice

No Im good here

Blur very blurry to me, nothing stood out sadly

Cockney accent, brit pop, 2+ hours. Three strikes. Outkast can be the exception for the 2 hour album, generally it should be at least a 1 star deduction.

A bloated nothing of an album. The only song worth listening to was Chemical World which was instrumental. 1/5

Not my interest at all

I HAT E BLUR WHY DO THEY KEEP SHOWING ME BLUR

For me, personally, no tracks on this record or the album as a whole qualifies to be a 'greatest of all time'. This is extremely middle of the road, bland. Especially after listening to a similarly early and obscure Smiths album yesterday that was amazing and also an unknown sound to me. Sorry to this album.

Blur albums are rubbish

Honestly, this was really not my thing.

Two Blur albums in a row? It's like getting a double album. There aren't enough good Blur songs to get their greatest hits on this list, let alone two albums. This is the spiritual descendant of glam rock. In the battle between Blur and Oasis, count me as a firm Oasis vote. This is better than Parklife except for Boys & Girls. They are a Beatles cover band that made some original songs. When people say that Greta Van Fleet are a Led Zeppelin cosplay band, they are also saying that Blur is a Beatles coplay band without the clothes. Blue Jeans is terrible. This album is terrible. British people just love crappy pop rock. The second half of Chemical World reinforces what a bunch of self-absorbed, twee losers these guys are. This album feels twice as long as a normal album, I think that's a function of having just listened to a Blur album prior to this one. Resigned might be the best track on the album but it's too little too late.

Well that was effing irritating. Only made it halfway before protecting my ears and brain.

I don’t like it. 1

Boring shit. Couldn’t finish it

Oh no, more Blur. I was unenthused going into Modern Life Is Rubbish, and my lack of enthusiasm wasn't unfounded. The vocals were boring and felt unpassionate, which soured me. The lyrics stirred nothing in me. Blur's sound is like they are mimicking another musician's sound but without any originality. For what it's worth, I thought the instrumental interlude on "Chemical World" was probably the most interesting that Blur were.

This album is kind of rubbish. I just don't see the appeal yet. How is it that these guys were the rivals of Oasis? How is this album any better or more important than any of the million other Brit rock albums this list has?

Brain-numbing boredom gave way to irritation as I realized this was a 2-disc set and that 2 hours 18 minutes of my life I'd never get back...

Brother, what?

Am I really embarking in a 2 + hour album today? Here goes! Yeah, I got through the first album of this double disc'n. I am done here.

I've put this one off for so long, and that is because I know myself. I hated every second of this.

They have occasional brilliance, none of it is here.

Modern Life Is Rubbish? Well so is this album.

This one really got on my nerves. The whiny vocals! How can one endure that?

Meh, I kinda liked the minor key "intermission" at the end of Chemical World. Mostly forgettable.

Pale shadows of music that has come before it. I don't care for the vocal styling. Nothing on here makes an impact. It all starts to sound the same. It's all a blur.

At first I thought that this was British “Of Montreal”. I was wrong. This is British garbage.

Listened to the first couple of songs. I don't like it at all

Yea. Not a fan. Too…British? Just no cohesiveness. All the songs were simple and the same 1/5

I only make it to track 9 before I couldn't take it anymore. I'm not listening to 2 hours of this.

nix für mich

Very disappointed in this album. Blur are a band I’ve known about since the heyday of Brit-pop but I’ve never taken the plunge into their catalogue. While the genre in itself has never been something I’ve had much interest in exploring I’ve never had an awful experience with it, until now. I found Albarns vocals insufferable and the music uninspired. If I had to pick a best of the worst I’d go for Star Shaped but even then I can’t say I’d seek to listen to it again.

Modern life is rubbish? Dit album is rubbish.

Not my kinda music. Sounds like new age rock but with punky vocals. I duno why but just don't fuck with it

This Album Is Rubbish.

Can’t say I enjoyed this one.

Absolute dog-rot.

Did not like one song. Couldn’t wait for it to be over.

Rubbish... boring uk rock

As a huge Gorillaz fan, glad I was finally pressured to listen to a Blur album. However, I can't say I was impressed.

Pain in my ears. I can’t stand this type of droning rock. Horrible vocals. Miss America and resigned are the only tolerable songs.

Modern life is Rubbish, is rubbish. I'd take any Oasis album over this. I cannot stand Damon Albarn's voice throught his entire blur career. His vocals improved massively in Gorillaz where he is more chilled out. If I had to pick any highlights it would be Advert and Chemical World as tolerable tracks. 1.5

Rubbish

I have this problem with a lot of Blur stuff, but it is really bland and uninteresting. Their albums don't seem to have their own sounds or directions. Nothing interesting or creative, just guitars.

N0T 4 M3

booo britpop

Not my style

About half way though and I am not enjoying this. The music is giving my anxiety for some reason. Second half was better. Still didn't really like this album.

Not for me

This Album Is Rubbish!

This album is rubbish is more like it. I’m so meh on blur and listening to this just reinforces that.

Couldn't finish. Way to long and trying to hard to be the beetles

2h20 de album, bah. não ouvi inteiro

I still like that one blur song but I really just wasn't that into it. Also why does this list have to be SO INTENSELY MASUCLINE. If there's no t-swift or gaga on here I'm pissed. Ya'll are making me listen to multiple springsteen albums...
