Couldn't finish it

Review - stop fuckin makin me listen to Damon Albarn arrrrrrgh Score - 5/10 Need to listen? NO

Bastante lejos de los mejores trabajos de Blur. Hay varios discos de la banda más merecedores que este para estar en esta lista.

I suppose you include this in the book because it was the starting pistol for Britpop, if you think that particular marketing campaign was as important as music writers like to make out. Suede weren't the starting pistol to their credit. Blur are a singles band to me. The albums always seem to have more than their fair share of filler. I can't imagine why the Teardrop Explodes peeps haven't sued over Colin Zeal's similarity to the way superior Sleeping Gas. They even add insult to injury by immediately following it up with a song called Pressure On Julian. One amusing thing to observe is that the 1 star reviews by American participants complaining about its Britishness would no doubt have delighted early 90s Damon Albarn. This was a rebellion against Grunge but it was also a rebellion against the perceived musical excesses of shoegaze and the influence of the likes of the Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine and Jesus and Marychain. For me the problem with that is that they end up with a restricted pallette to work from and too many of the arrangements are a bit dull and the melodies and lyrics aren't good enough to pick up the slack. It sounds pompous.

Much as I like Blur, they can get a bit much, especially their more Britpoppy stuff like this. The videos are all a bit too Lads Lads Lads for me. And that bit tacked on the end of Resigned was very novelty song, which always means a point deducted.

I dunno... I liked some parts of this record. It had some cool music at times but to be honest, nothing really catchy or that memorable. I wanted to like this... but I did not. My bad.

Album that saved the band from bankruptcy, but I don't think it belong in the list if we already have Parklife and the Self titled. Not to say that it is a bad album, just not the best from Albarn and Co.

Damon Albarn is rubbish. The first song annoyed the fuck out of me, I skipped it. His dumb ass voice just sucks so bad on this album. I liked the instrumentation.

Not really a Brit pop sort of guy, or a blur fan, so this is a hard listen. It was either these or oasis and unfortunately I’m probably ok the bandwagon of oasis. Odd one or two songs stand out but, I don’t know if it’s you’ve got to be in the mood or if it’s just not as good as I thought it would be this album. Long, drawn out. I’d say masterpiece in a lot of ways, but again, it’s Brit pop.

Britpop is totally my jam, and yet.... reading the Wikipedia for this album is terribly embarrassing. The pretentiousness of Damon Albarn and even the other band members is astounding and makes me want to hate this album. It's such a shallow attitude to take - "America bad! England good!" Also - they hated America because we didn't love their music.... yeah - *it wasn't very good at the time, sir, BY YOUR OWN ADMISSION*. And yet the band felt that "Modern Life is Rubbish" was some kind of major artistic statement. Anyways. Let's actually listen to this thing before we draw any conclusions...... - I'm noticing something about Damon Albarn's music. I really enjoy some of his songs, "Coffee and TV," "Sing," "Clint Eastwood." But most of his work is missing anything remotely ear-catching to me. The songs on "Modern Life" are squarely in the non-hook category: dense, and tuneless, and going nowhere very interesting. I just don't get it. TWO STARS

Not great

Quite a long sit like this. Whether I thought it was worth it, hmmm...

ngl no le presté la atención necesaria porq estaba yendo a defender a la universidad pública.

Forget modern life - this album was rubbish 😔 Nowhere near as good as their other album listed on here 2 ⭐️

I am coming to realize that I just do not enjoy blur. The first album on the list did nothing for me, and it was the same for this record. I remember liking the Song 2 single off their self-titled album but not enjoying anything else on that album. Perhaps the entire band turns me off...

Didn't have any of the hits I know them by, and didn't grab me. I'm sorry I did have time to give it a second listen before having to rate it because I know these guys are capable of great things.

Kinda meh. This can’t be Blur’s best record right? And if there’s another one on this list, and they still included this album… then that makes this album even more annoying to stomach.

Meh. It's not rubbish, but it doesn't particularly distinguish itself either.

It is a decent mix of Brit pop and 90's indie, not a fan of the vocals at all. Only a few songs that I thought were completely interesting, could have cut a few songs and tightened this up. For me it was a bit too over produced, especially the drum sound and too long. And I know Albarn with the Gorillaz, which are awesome, but I couldn't get into his style on this record.

When this started to play, I thought it was OK as I got through the first few songs. Then I got distracted by something and must've tuned it out, as I only still realized it was playing when I got to song 9 (Oily Water). I found that one pretty good, but it doesn't really bode well for the album that I was able to completely ignore 5+ songs and not get pulled back in sooner. Having now completed the listen, I feel like the things I remember most about it are negatives. The main one being Albarn's voice, which once again grows old fast. Some people can pull off a distinct/unconventional singing voice, but his doesn't really work for me. I also didn't love the songwriting. Some parts were good, but often one section of a song kinda ruined what I had liked about it otherwise. Another issue was the length. I don't know if this band is capable of making an album shorter than 50 minutes from what I've been recommended, but I wish they had here. I really didn't see anything that lent to this album running as long as it did (just about 59 minutes). This is my third Blur album from this list (behind Parklife and Blur). I've only really liked Blur so far, for whatever reason. And even that wasn't really anything great. This one is better than Parklife to me, but still not that good. As a whole, I found it fine but unimpressive. Maybe another listen would help it make more of an impact, but I don't feel inclined to give it one. Overall: 2.2/5

Enjoyed about the first half of disc 1 as it was reminiscent of the Kinks and the Jam. Was not impressed with the other songs or sounds.

this was okay, nothing stood out really except chemical world with the intermission. that slapped. but yeah didn’t stand out overall

It's been years since I heard Modern Life is Rubbish, but I remember being ambivalent towards it. Upon relisten, Blur does some things that I expected, and some things I didn't. As previously stated, I did not have good memories with this album, and I'm reminded why. Blur can often be irritating when they lean obnoxiously pop. What I did not expect is that Blur could be punky or channel the dark psychedelia of a Soundgarden song. I really do appreciate the band's willingness to experiment with their sound, and it is consistently rewarding. Sadly these songs are in the minority Highlights: "Advert", "Oily Water" Lowlights: "For Tomorrow"

I’m calling it. Brit Pop is just overrated.

I think this is good but it’s not super engaging for me. The instrumentals are good but the singing is eh

Nothing memorable here

Far too long 2 srts

Damon Albarn is rubbish. His disaffected vocal style completely ruins two different bands for me -- Blur and Gorillaz. This album is actually what cemented that notion for me. Let's attempt some criticism: 'Chemical World' is interesting. It has a singalong melody and sort of a Flaming Lips gang vocal in the chorus and a Pumpkins-esque glassy tone to the overdriven guitar. And then there's an irritating piano outro for some fucking reason. 'Oily Water' has kind of an interesting riff but it's totally dependent on either a tremolo pedal or possible some volume modulation to work, which is fine except when your whole thing is an effect, I'm going to compare you to The Edge -- one of the few people I give a pass to on this -- and it's not as effective as ol' Dave Evans. I'm not even a U2 fan. 'Villa Rosie' is alright. Instead of listening to this shite, try any of Sloan, Thrush Hermit, Eric's Trip and/or Jale. Music from Canada's East Coast in the 90's was infinitely better than the hot, sweaty, leaking garbage that was the Blur/Oasis "battle". Honestly The Stone Roses and later The Verve were much better, too. I've seen it written that Blur and Oasis were lifting their act from the 60's and 70's of great British music, respectively (say The Kinks for Blur and T. Rex for Oasis). If that's the case, I think they both missed the point (to be expected of the Gallaghers, as they were probably steaming drunk). There's a subtle aggression and transgression to The Kinks, backed up by their very beautiful melodies and harmonies; Blur just picked up the jangle and wanked all over a recording studio. You wouldn't attack a blackboard with a wire brush in a public park, so please be mindful of noise pollution and don't stream Blur if you don't have to. This reminds me of growing up in an era where everybody my age pretended that they didn't care about or like anything in particular and that performative cultural anhedonia has done lasting damage to all the kids from the Gen X/Millennial cusp. Don't celebrate it. This is crap. The Spice Girls were better. 2/5

Buen álbum para acompañar una mañana tranquila sin nada que hacer, solo para música de ambiente.

There was some ok stuff in there... but nothing REALLY caught me

I am not now, nor have been, nor will be (probably), a britpop fan. A lot of dissonant and unusual chord choices keeps this from being generic and bland, but as a result makes a not very pleasing listening experience.

Meh - it seems almost like a piece of meta-irony. Technically well put together but just not that interesting. You could see where they were going with future albums but this is just a bit forgettable.

I like Blur and whilst this album has the basic early blur hallmarks (cheeky cockney chappies singing about Bacardi Breezers and Steak & Kidney pie, possibly) it doesn't really have the memorable hooks to make any of these songs stick in the mind. It's no The Great Escape or even my favourite, the self titled 5th album. Not really worthy to be on this list.

My thought process whilst listening to this fluctuated between "this actually isn't half bad, probably the best Blur album I've had so far" and "shut the fuck up Damon Albarn" approximately 30 times. It's way too long (not helped by the drawling "Oily Water" or disastrous "Miss America" tanking proceedings towards the second third of the album), and it tries to be psuedo-intellectual whilst ultimately coming off as a bit daft. Very Kinks-esque updated for the 90s, but I'm not the biggest Kinks fan, so go figure!

Modern life is rubbish is rubbish

Sería poco original decir que esté álbum es basura

Better than I remembered, but about 110 percent longer than it needs to be.

They try so freaking hard to sound as British as possible that the album has to suffer. I mean no wonder these guys never became popular in the US. I’d much rather listen to a proper British band like oasis during this time.

Not for me.

Wow I hated this

Will other Blur albums be on this list? This was a decent album, but there are other Blur albums I prefer. I don't think I recognized any songs on here. And maybe because I just listened to Dirt, but Pressure on Julian sounds like an Alice In Chains song...

Found it a bit meh. Was hoping for more, I listened twice and found it pretty forgettable. I’m guessing Blur has some catchier/more compelling albums.

Oh good, another Blur album...and a touch over 2 hours. Wonderful Blur isn’t bad. They’re just not mind-blowing. And yet, because they’re British, those crown-kneeling, crooked-toothed, beans-on-toast-eating tea-chuggers have tried to convince everyone that Blur is on the same level as the Beatles. Listening to it, I kept thinking about the first Third Eye Blind record: polished, melodic alternative rock with strong hooks and solid songwriting. A decent album. Do you know where Third Eye Blind plays now? “Brews in the Park” in a random suburb 35 min away from the municipal airport. Maybe the amphitheater next to the penguin exhibit at your local zoo. And honestly? Modern Life Is Rubbish isn’t operating on some dramatically higher plane. The difference isn’t the music. The difference is the mythology. Which is great for history books. Slightly less impressive when you’re listening thirty years later wondering why this supposedly monumental album mostly sounds like a pretty good college radio band.

I thought I liked Blur but this album is so long and boring. Every song sounds the same. I had to turn it off half way through

Blur is rubbish.

2.5 Stars - not very inspiring

Why are they sing-yelling at me in Extra British?

Best thing about this album is the title. But I’d go further and insert English between modern and life. To those wondering yes it’s a right wing observation. Second best thing is The Mallard which I’ve seen many times at the railway museum in York. Built at a time when England wasn’t rubbish and makes you yearn again for those days. As for the music Blur were never my favourites and Damon Albarn’s cheeky cockney whiny voice is more annoying than on any other of his albums. 2/5 13/2/26

Couldn’t get through it

For Tomorrow Chemical World

I like Blur and so was initially surprised that I only knew For Tomorrow from this album. After listening, I'm less surprised. Other than the piano led outro to Chemical World, these tracks are not memorable.

Very British. Better than their Blur album, but too long. Starts out OK, then lots of similar fillers, strong finish with Coping, Turn It Up, and Resigned. (2.3*s) Tempo seems somewhat askew throughout Modern Life Is Rubbish, but maybe that off-tempo is why this album makes The 1001 Must Hear List

Modern Life Is Rubbish but better than a lot of other eras. Same goes for the band when compared with other Brit Pop acts as they paved the way for the genre. This 2nd release was not a s good as their later works though. This album was a bit of a blur for me. Went past pretty quick and smooth for an hour long LP but didn't grabbed me at any point. Interested in listening to their debut as comparison to see the new direction they took. Not a bad record but skippable at 2.42 stars.

more like this album is rubbish hehehehehehehehehehehehe

This is an average album by a good band. Ultimately, this is an early album from a band still figuring out who they were going to be.

Can't get on with his voice at all

Ok album, but at over 2 hours, too long!

The Kinks we have at home. Damon Albarn really fancied himself huh

Rubbish. Boring. Nothing standout about it.

This album proves its thesis — rubbish it is. The songs are well crafted, solidly in the Venn Diagram of The Beatles & Bowie. but I don’t care about any of them. The heavy cockney accent and frequent failure to hit the notes bother. On the whole, disappointing and boring A 2.

Just did not hit any vines musically.

Not my kind of music

Ehhhhh

This album wasn’t total rubbish.

Nicht so geil - typisch Blur. Rotzig, jammernd und eher eindimensional. Einmal hören reicht hier.

- uhhmmm ..... weak and boring. I can't understand where the comparison to the writing of the Kinks comes from. Whoever writes that either doesn't listen, is grasping for something or has their head up their ass. The worst Kinks records still outshine this effort buy miles. It's almost an insulting comparison .... -

El disco contiene una de sus mejores canciones, la que lo abre. Tras ella, todo es aburrimiento, pretensiones y ruido. Damon Albarn no es cantante de nivel y el grupo suena a chicle y a música de dibujos animados de los ochenta.

And so is blur sort of.

I liked a couple tracks, but mostly I just wanted it to end

A very typical boring 90s britpop album.

Another example of 90s BritPop that I probably don't need to hear again.

Soft music + nasal vocals = not particularly enjoyable

Ei tämmönen brittipunkki ihan kyl uppoo. Laiskaa menoa ja laulukin vähän ärsyttävää.

Not inspired by this at all

My family hated me for making them listen to it

Blur is a fun band. I recognize a couple songs from different albums, but I’ve never heard any of these not bad 2.5 stars.

I didn't hate this album, but I was a little bit bored. There was nothing that pulled me in. Song I liked- Turn It Up

The songs are better than the ones on Parklife, but it's definitely not good enough for me to ever want to listen to an hour of it? Literally just pick and Kinks album and listen to that instead, honestly!

Modern life is very much like this album then. Blur were much better before they thought they were the Kinks, and even then they were much like modern life is.

More Britpop. So fucking sick of the pretense. List author's containerized sense of music really shines here.

Worse David Bowie

Not a good or interesting album...

I really like Blur but this one sort of misses the mark

Pretty standard Brit Pop 2h18m?? We serious here?? Fave track: For Tomorrow

I don't particularly see the appeal? too long i find the singing kinda annoying

I really don't like the vocals here. Everything else is just alright. Low 2*

Passed by in a blur and not in a good way 2-3

This was not as easy a listen as Parklife. At times, though, it kinda sounded like Madness, and that was cool.

So many better Brit bands, if they didn't do song 2 this band would have fall of to the waste side. WOO-HOO!!

I am looking for background music with these 1001 albums, I found this album to be background noise. Perhaps if I was in a different mind set at the time of listening my evaluation would be different.

You can tell the roots of what Blur would become are here, but the songs seem to really drag on - sometimes for an unnaturally and awkwardly long time - and very little of their later lyrical wit seems present. This is the sort of album that makes yanks think all of the UK's musical output is "alright guv'ner freshen yer wahter, stuff it down the chimney" I think this is one of those albums that's a lot more historically important for doing something new than actually a Good Album

As I understand, it's a classic of it's genre, which would pave the way for future british music, and I can kinda respect that. But it's not music that I usually enjoy and I felt that it kinda droned on, especially in the beginning. Most interesting songs for me were probably Chemical World, Villa Rosie and Resigned, which probably says more about my music taste than the album lol

Don't care for Blur, don't care for Oasis. Simple as. 4/10 Favourite track: N/A

Modern life is rubbish is rubbish

This is alright, but drags on a bit. The weird noise track halfway through is pretty off-putting. I feel like Britpop in general is just not really my jam

Tenk å lage et album på nesten to og en halv time, og likevel kommer ingen av låtene med som topp 10 på spotify. Det er imponerende det. Forsåvidt også at jeg hørte igjennom hele.

Completely boring album from a guy who has obviously done much better

rubbish

Detta var inte min grej, alldeles för "krånglig" musik för min smak. Vissa låtar hade ett gött sväng men detta var för långt ifrån musik som jag kan uppskatta. Dock är det roligt att de sjunger på brittiska.

Aggressively British. I think I mean that in a bad way. I mean, I do because I don't like it. It's not that it's actively bad, it's just not my style. Very repetitive. I like the weird circus like interlude in the middle of Chemical World. That's fun. Most songs are too long, bordering on jam-y for me. I would maybe like some of the songs if there were 2 mins long. I was kind of just waiting for it to be over.

Another selection that reveals a British bias for the nineties. I presume this because so many albums on this list seem to come from that time and place, highlighting (I suppose) the author's background as far as seminal musical influences. This is fine, but it leaves out my own biases for what is largely defined as Americana music. There are three albums by Blur on the list, NONE by Warren Zevon. That makes no sense to me.

I didn’t need this album to have a smash hit like “Song 2”, but the whole time I was begging for it to give me something, but it was just so uneventful. I guess given the title maybe they set out to make the album equivalent of your morning commute…

Boring and lame. This album is rubbish.

Guys... I don't think I like Blur. This is the second album that has left me to realise I just really like the ~6 songs I'd heard before. Both them and Oasis gave birth to the big indie rock/Britpop style that dominated in the 90's/00's that I never connected with.

Not quite

This album is a bit rubbish-ish

This album is rubbish 1.5/5

#726. About 2 hours of uninteresting moaning. 2/5: meh

Too British

I think I'm an Oasis guy.

A couple of good songs. But this was far too long, and much of it was very forgettable.

Careful and crafty, smarty and arty. But as per usual with BritPop (and this is like the sixth Blur we've had--what gives?) I just don't find the songs compelling. I want to want to make an effort, but it's just not happening.

Day614 - make it better or make it shorter. this hopefully will be the last blur album

Very British. From first impression of track one, I can definitely see where future project came from. 100% not for me. Was kinda painful to listen to

I do not understand the appeal of Britpop. Gave it an extra star for not being Oasis.

Blur the second. It’s more than a little self-aggrandising to categorise Britpop as a “must-hear” genre, but I’ll bite. I don’t recall liking their self-titled album all that much, which is unfortunate as I like Albarn for his work on Gorillaz. Maybe this one will be the one to win me over. Hmm. I like Albarn’s quirky vocal style, as always, but there’s a whole lotta nothing spliced between the better cuts of this album. The stylistic approach is pretty restrictive – there’s only so far you can go with these kinds of guitar riffs and sounds. However, on a more optimistic note these lyrics seem to be right up my alley. I may give this album a closer listen sometime in the future. “For Tomorrow” ain’t bad. I like Albarn’s vocals, and the guitar riffs near the middle of the song are pretty sweet. “Colin Zeal” has a good rhythm, and I enjoy the lyrics. I like the layabout energy of “Blue Jeans” - the weary instrumental sounds quite nice. No way! I knew the outro to “Chemical World” was a Blur song, but I wasn’t entirely sure. I like that bit of the track, though I don’t care much for the main song, admittedly. Gonna check the book. Considered Blur’s best by many. A time capsule of England during the 90s. Laid the groundwork for where Blur would go. Yeah, this seems to be a decent pick. It’s nuts to me that only the first Gorillaz album landed on the list (before being subsequently removed from later editions of the book). I can cosign this inclusion on the basis that the list can do with more Albarn representation.

Modern Life ain’t anywhere near as bad as this album

Blur have always gave me Thomas Skinner vibes. I’m just glad Thomas Skinner has come out of the woodwork to give me a fitting description of Blur.

At the time I was definitely more of an Oasis fan than a Blur one, but looking back, I can clearly see that I was wrong. Blur were the far more varied and interesting band. That said, this album seems a strange one to include on the list. Perhaps it's because it was at the very start of what became britpop, but it's mostly pretty poor with only For Tomorrow being any good. Popscene, Blur's best early song, isn't on the album, only the deluxe extended edition. Which again, is mostly filled with very average songs.

No real standouts for me…solid album

One of the most sarcasm baiting titles. ‘It’s not just modern life’. One blur album is enough and as song 2 isn’t on this, this isn’t it.

doesnt hit me as extraoridnary. I like some of their songs. ... but this album felt "brown"

... and so is this album. I'm sorry, that is a bit harsh, but these headlines just write themselves. I never really understood the cult of Blur. Some great singles, but over-rated albums. It's a British thing, isn't it? But it really is just an updated Kinks. Maybe you had to be doing coke in Camden in the 90s with the Britpop crew to really _get_ it. In fairness, I'm not British, and so the specific concerns of such an Anglocentric album don't really speak to me. I just want Damon Albarn to stop bleating and go away. (I do like the cover art, though. That's a cool train.)

Que pereza me ha dado

3/10 album is 10 songs too long, really stretching recording on a CD, it's good for 3/4 songs and then it drags with the same britpop style, second disc is arguably better with its variety

A nice listening of an 90's rock album but nothing more

Niet voor mij

Why does Robert Dimnery have such a hard on for Damon Albarn ffs?!? Favorite songs: Advert, Coping, Colin Zeal, For Tomorrow Least favorite songs: Pressure on Julian, Miss America 2/5

Too long. C’mon guys.

This album is rubbish

I appreciate this, genuinely, for what it is. Honest, authentic 90s music in an era when there was so much bad music. This isn't bad, but it's also not very good. 2/5.

Modern life isn't rubbish, this album pretty much is though. Was expecting more and was left disappointed.

A bit boring. All the ingredients are there, just can’t bring myself to like how it’s all assembled.

After the first two songs, I don't think I can make it through an entire hour plus. I think Advert might be the best so far, but I don't care for the frizzy noise in production, would prefer it to be cleaner. Gotta admit for BritPop, not my thing, not bad. Wanted to like it but just didn't overall. They do have their own sound. If the remaster is this muddy, I hate to think what the original recording sounded like.

Two Blur albums in 1001 is maybe a little too much

I’ll admit to being biased from the get go because everyone I know who actually uses the term rubbish is a putz, but this tracked with my expectations on that front.

Rubbish

1. Fuck u for the siren sounds 2. it's whatever, but in a respectful way

Amateurish and repetitive at times. Like a combination of Oasis and The Cure but not really as good as either or doing their own thing.

Average 90’s Brit pop/tock. Not bad, but pretty forgettable and definitely not essential listening.

britpop is a hit or miss for me

I'd rather listen to Gorillaz

I listened to part of this before having to drive somewhere with my partner who refuses to be tormented by this list. Came back to it today at approximately where I remember leaving off? I don't hate Blur and the album was pretty catchy.

I just found this boring. I think I’d have a different take on this if I had been around to enjoy it the first time around, but I don’t think it’s aged that well and a few tracks in I was done with it all. I’ve never really listened to Blur beyond the obvious hits and on this listening I won’t be rushing back!

I do like Blur. This is not their best album. It feels a bit like an experiment. They clearly had not nailed it here. Some elements of the fun, energy and britishness are there but just badly composed. I would describe this as the most listenable bad album I have reviewed so far.

The sound of this album puts me in mind of an early 90's optimism, the start of Brit pop and "Cool Britannia". I was interested to find the vocals in the first half of the album sounded almost like pop-punk. The second half was more laconic. My issue with Blur is that they are just a bit bland. By halfway through the album I felt like I'd heard all it had to give.

it could be worse

I really want to like Blur, but I just don't. Almost like a less artsy but more experimental REM. And, oh my, this album is super long. The second disc is a bit better, but, by then, I am Blurred out.

Not fan

British alt-rock as it sounds in my head when I imagine any band from the 90s in the genre. It has a good feel to it but to me its more something that I leave on if it comes on the radio or on a random playlist than something I would actively listen to.

hmmm... ik heb al betere Britpop gehoord... zelfs van Blur zelve...

Forgettable

Just not very memorable

Being an American child (apologies for that given...everything now) at the time this came out, I was never really exposed to Blur much until they had already faded away. I knew Oasis, but Song 2 was literally the only Blur song I knew growing up. Even now, I can only name a handful. I guess that's all to say that as a kid growing up in the desert in the US, Blur didn't really make it that far, though I know they were much more popular elsewhere. This album? It's just kinda plain. I feel like this could have been any number of British pop rock bands in the early 90s. And I'm sure it was. Maybe it's just looking back 30 years later but nothing really sticks out for me. I've heard sooo much music that sounds just like this, there's nothing that makes me want to keep listening. Villa Rosie is kind of a weird high point for me, I liked that one. The rest? Meh. I can think of a lot of albums missing from this list that would have been a better pick than this one. I was going to round up because the album name is great, but it's now the next day and I can't even remember how any of the songs went. 2.5/5.

Screamo? Meh

I won't go for the low hanging fruit and call the album "rubbish;" however, at one point I wondered how far into the album I had gotten since it had been playing for quite some time, only to see that I was not quite done with the second song on the play list. It just got worse from there. . .

I grew up with Blur playing somewhere all the time and I never really got into it. However, I have never heard this album, Its giving me David Bowie vibes.

I gotta be honest: I listened to this and I cannot recall a single thing about it. Which I guess means it also wasn't terrible, but still.

Didn’t really grab me… never been that keen on early Blur

I knew what to expect from Blur. I was at the time this released pretty up-to-date on my Britpop/rock care of Bob. He was into Blur, and Oasis, and the rivalry between them. That said, I definitely am not a fan myself. I got into Pulp a bit around this time, but never found the love for Blur, even if I like some of the later stuff Damon did (Gorillaz)> This just felt like generic Britrock. There was nothing at all that stood out about this album, and having listened to it yesterday, I don't really have any of the songs still bouncing around in my head.

I didn't really know what to expect from Blur. I know them for 1 song, "Song 2" and I've tried to listen to some of their other stuff and I wasn't a huge fan. Basically, that's how I felt about this album too. It's just not exciting, it's not innovative, it just kind of exists. I think if someone said they liked this album, I'd understand, but I'd just disagree.

It's OK. It's Blur. It's arch and angular and a little bit too knowing for my palate.

A few good tracks

It was good in the 90s

Pretty good. Didn't blow me away and may not listen again.

Decent, all I can say really

Nah, this is really bland. Certainly their weakest

Thank god this guy started Gorillaz and turned this all around...

I can see how this would have been cool in 1993, but Blur has put out better stuff since this

Mitäs se tämä oli, ei innostanut kuin ehkä yksi kappale vähän enemmän?

prat < wanker < tosser < twat < knobhead

Not so interesting

they have better albums, got tired of this halfway through

Very meh for me. I guess I'm not really a fan of blur, at least when they are making brit-pop like this

Tried greatest hirs of blur cos i forgot what i ws suppossed to be listening to. Still don’t love them

It’s Britpop with shitty Albarn vocals, complete with intonated ‘o’s and a vague, cringy air of the popular side of British culture that I’m particularly averse to. There’s a general collection of interesting instrumentation, which never even attempts to stray into the far-reaching lands of above average, save for maybe the uncharacteristic drawn-out Oily Water. For Tomorrow is fun, if you can of course ignore Albarn’s ‘I’m definitely British, and this accent is for the ketamine-induced, bucket hat-wearing, football-brained 90s British crowd!’ accent. It’s not nearly as bad as the Mancunian counterparts with their senseless wailing. But it is still not any good. Keep it to yourselves, aforementioned 90s crowd. I don’t want any part of it.

Definitely is British pop rock

Listenable Brit pop. I liked the Suede record better. 2.5 stars

Meh. Swas'o.k.

Fairly uninteresting.

Blur isn't my thing. Bands that try to be too lyrically clever, sometimes at the expense of musicality simply don't do it for me. The drumming is particularly poor. 2/5.

Sounds like Blur with no good Blur songs.

OK album, but felt very long. Didn't listen to the whole second disc that Spotify had as part of the album as it was just extras and I didn't really enjoy this enough to continue listening to more. 2.5/5

I've already heard 3 or is it 4 Blur albums and have a hard time differentiating this from them. Goes without saying but too much BritPop

Mundane

Modern Life is Rubbish is... not rubbish ... but a lil' shrill. Blue Jeans was solid, but the pleasure was short-lived —the double-time piano in Chemical World was so irritating.

Fair to middling 90’s pop. There was so much better out there.

I feel like I had their other big album in this albums thing already, it's definitely that classic brit pop sound like Oasis and stuff. I don't hate Brit Pop but it gets kinda samey to me. I think I'm just crabby listening this morning because the British accents are really bothering me. TALK NORMAL. The harmonies and melodies are actually pretty cool, but like I said, so much of this brit pop stuff sounds so similar.

I guess I can see enjoying this until 1994 came around

The type of listen that really does *feel* it's length, which in this case is over two hours. You feel bored in the first 30 minutes, so the whole thing is just a total slog

2/5 A bit too much brit-rock without memorable tracks.

Too long, nowhere near as interesting as their other albums.

I feel bad because I love them but this is just not it man, they have better albums.

Uuuuh…di solito apprezzo o almeno tollero gli album dei Blur o il britpop in generale ma questo…è proprio fastidioso

due stracazzo di ore. non esiste.

Not my thing, unfortunately. Some songs were okay; some were very annoying. 2.5

I was not familiar with this album before listening. I really did not care for it. The vocals were somehow grating despite not really being able to put my finger on why. The instrumentation was fine, but not particularly noteworthy for the most part. I wouldn't come back to this one.

I didn't really care for it. BritPop is a struggle for me to enjoy.

A double album that really didnt need to be a double album, and the Maggie May cover was awful

So long.. I lost patience for this album before I even got halfway through.

Nothing engaging here.

This album is rubbish

Blur just doesn't do it for me.

There are FIVE fucking Damon Albarn albums across all editions of this list. The only one I enjoyed has been Gorillaz, and even that was hit or miss. He also managed to make Tony Allen sound like shit. There's no way he's equally as worthy of a listen as Tom Waits, Led Zeppelin, Lou Reed, nor indeed more worthy of a listen than The Kinks or Talking Heads, for fuck sake!

A blur.. nothing stood out

Meh. Trying to sound very much like The Clash but...eh. Miss America is good, due to the Gorillaz vibe. 2/5.

As I near a 75% completion of this project, I am just tired of all the very similar Britpop. And...a third Blur album on this project? Seems unnecessary and further lends to the assumption that many make about the creator of this list being overly horny for Britpop, but whatever. Turns out, yes, I liked this at least okay -- like I do most of the Britpop on here. But still. The album didn't really have any memorable moments, though. It was all just very mid. I'd give this about a 2.5.

Pretty bland.

Sorprendentemente no me gustó

Blur. Beim reinhören wurde mir sofort klar wieso ich ihren Stil mag aber Blur noch besonders. Zu gleichmässig sind die Songs

I think this band's sound is somewhere between Black Crows and Beatles. But the bad versions. That I couldn't tell if I liked them is telling and due to a lack of focus on their part. I have to say that some songs had that cool vibe. But the others lacked confidence.

It's not terrible.

Very inconsistently medium

**I thought a very repetitive album, most tracks sounded alike. I didn’t enjoy

Modern life may be rubbish, but this album was a bit rubbish as well.

bland and mids at best

Listened to the first CD and most of the second.. it was hard for me to enjoy this one, not my type of music. 2hrs of grungy jams is a lot to get through in one day.. they should have gave us this album on a Friday.

I'm still Team Oasis 30 years later, Modern Life Is Rubbish? Well, yeah, and so is this album...

So the first song was indeed, rubbish. I'd like to say I enjoyed what came next, but... Just not to my liking.

Not sure why more than one blue album is on this list yet here we are. If modern life is rubbish and this album was modern when it came out then that must mean this album is rubbish. Well it’s not completely rubbish but for Brit alt rock it’s not good enough. 5.1/10

Ei mitenkään erikoista. Mä odotin taas enemmän, mutta missään kappaleessa ei ollut oikein minkäänlaista tarttumapintaa. Kuin Oasis, mutta vähemmän iskevät kappaleet. Parhaat: For Tomorrow, Peach

Is this the one that beat Oasis? Who is this even for? Boooo.

This might be the most British sounding band of all time. Pretty boring album to be honest, there were no real parts that stood out to me. Nothing wrong with it but I was just waiting for it to be over pretty much from the start.

I want to make a rubbish joke because of the album title, but it’s not that bad. I do find it a little boring, although some of the tracks towards the end of the second disc are a little better.

Eh, nothing grabbed me on this one. It’s fine I guess. Made me appreciate the first Oasis album more.

Смотрел историю блюр, как они пытались перевернуть рок-сцену в юкей и ворваться в чарты us и в итоге совершенно не были поняты. Пора оценить самому как оно и чего. Ну я оценил. Rubbish как по мне, зачем оно здесь?

This is the album that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friends. Some people started playing it not knowing what it was, and they'll continue playing it forever, just because...2.4.

This album is rubbish

Hmmm, I guess I don't really like Blur. It was terrible, but it also really didn't give me any joy.

Blur after Suede is funny because same era and genre but this was rubbish compared to suede.

I base everything I know about Blur off of "Song 2" but now realize that song was an anomaly for the band. I can't put my finger on what specifically I can't stand about this band, but there is something.

Not that interesting. Found it hard to follow along and there were no songs that grabbed my attention. 2/5 Won’t listen again

This is a very British album that does not really do it for me. There were a few songs that stood out to me as being good though.

It was OK. Nothing really jumped out.

This album felt like it was really run-of-the-mill music without much depth. Hate to say it but it was just background music. I didn't hear anything that said play me again because I'm astonishing.

hear a little Madness influence maybe even REM. This album and band may have been playing all around me in the 90’s but I didn’t notice, their sound is bland and mundane.

Britpop. I am left very uncertain of this genre after hearing this album. I think it is supposed to be a thematic, concept album but most of the lyrics are, well, I am not sure what they are about..."Kazoo, kazoo"??? The last song, "Resigned", had sparse lyrics but the mood actually seems to tie into the concept. Just not a must listen for me....

Cool album cover and decent musicianship. But Damon Albarn is extremely irritating on this one. He's so punchable. Guess I'm not British enough to appreciate it.

Doesn’t excite me. For me, the listening experience switches between monotone and stressful. I think over the last weeks I realized that not everybody likes everything. It comes down to personal taste and preference. There might be some very influential albums but today we have the privilege to choose from a wide catalogue of records that not only includes all the 'classics' but everything that came after. I also think that if we limit ourselves to records that had the chance to evolve into pop culture (supported by the industry) we miss out on so many great artists and records. Going in the future I'll always be open and curious not only about music from the past but also about contemporary art. I think we have phenomenal upcoming artists (that did not break the surface yet). While I think it is important to expose yourself to all kinds of musical expression you should not force yourself to like something if you can't connect to it (atm). Ultimately, I want to stick to records that not only satisfy me for the moment or have reached high critical acclaim but records that fulfill me and make living on planet Earth even more exciting.

Having bought their first album some 35 years ago, I did have some hope that this might be a decent album. However, by a few songs in, those hopes were dashed. It seems they set out to make a power pop album, some 15 years after that was a thing. However, this album doesn’t seem to have a lot of power… or pop. The 14 turgid tunes go on far too long, rarely threatening to become interesting. Allegedly they were listening to and inspired by “Something Else“-era Kinks when they were writing/recording this album. Nope, don’t hear that either. I thought I might be giving it three stars after the first few songs; however, after this continued to drone on, the grade dropped to its current two stars. Wanted to dock it even further after having to watch the two videos on YouTube accompanying the albums singlesat the end of side one and beginning of side two. Really silly and terrible videos, the antithesis of what one should be doing with the format.

Decent, but no hits or hooks and super long album with a lot of filler.

Blur are rubbish

Nja. Aldrig hatat blur, men aldrig riktigt gillat. Skivan känns för experimentellt. Sången är inte bra. Musiken är inte melodisk. Vad finns kvar? Meh ..

Blur...pronounced bleuh.

slow and hard listen. being a double album made it worse. I enjopy some of the songs but as a whole this album as not a good listen.

Blue Jeans // Miss America // Resigned 2.5/5

Ég fílaði aldrei Blur neitt sérstaklega og þeir hafa ekker unnið á undanfarna áratugi. Þeir eiga einhver lög sem ég myndi hlusta á og ég myndi ekki slökkva á þeim í útvarpinu en þessa plötu myndi ég ekki setja aftur á í eyrna minna návist af því að mér fannst hún ekki skemmtileg

It's so weird that the singer is the singer in the Gorillaz. I'll always say that about Blur. This isn't a trainwreck but it doesn't really do anything in any direction. Some slightly interesting noise work and instrumental but not much going on. I don't know what's going on during Chemical World. I may be giving this 2 vs 1 largely due to the train on the cover.

Couple of goodish tracks but was surprised at how nothing this album was.

Blur have made better songs, better albums and Damon has gone on to do so much better, so listening to this was quite disappointing.

Some songs were OK, but overall very underwhelming.

Not their best. I very much enjoyed Park Life so I was hoping for more of the same but it didn't hit the same to me. F.Song: Advert

The singer makes my ears bleed for more than one song at a time.

A couple songs with interesting sounds but this is skipable

Blur has some good songs but this album was pretty boring.

I love Blur. Damon is a legend. This is not the one. There are a few great songs (For Tomorrow / Blue Jeans / Miss America) but it just sounds like 4 mid-20 year olds sat in a room trying to write a follow up album and not getting anywhere. They just sound so bored (which given the title of the album, might’ve been clever but it wears thin quickly)

Gear: Aür Audio Aurora Mische: naja Mugge: Modern Life Is Rubbish Is Rubbish Wertung: 1-2/5

Meh. Not a jangly pop kind of gal.

No. This album is rubbish.

Meh. OK, but kind of boring.

Super 90s British alternative pop. I didn’t hate it bit most songs sound similar and have odd progressions that just don’t jive with what my ear was hoping for. Vocals are not what I would call pleasant.

It's ok. I was not in to Blur back in the day. Still seems a bit boring to me.

Another britpop album that has no emotion or real depth to it. Drags on and doesn't really know when then the song. Definitely does not feel essential.

It’s ok

I strongly dislike Blur.

Hey, can you sound more British? Blur? More like Blah. 2 stars

Begynne å konkludera med at Blur ikke e for meg

They definitely have specific sounds but it makes every song sounds the same. I got fatigue from listening to this album. Forgot what day, time, year it is since every second of album sounds alike.

love blur, gonna be harsh, couple ok songs, overall one dimensional and a little uninteresting

very meh i can see why this album is influential but its not my thing

Begynne å konkludera med at Blur ikke e for meg

Not for me, Clive.

Meh. Not even in the top 3 Blur albums

A decent alternative album. Nothing special or notable about it. Tracks I like: For Tomorrow Advert

Album is ok. Not my cup of tea buts fine as backround.

Aggressively ok. Boring like a lot of 90s rock. This is like the middle road of the era. A bit noisy and snarky with no real feelings apart from dejection and cynicism. I much prefer the romanticism and pop sensibility of the eighties (cure, smiths etc) or the more dynamic, fun and danceable rock of the aughts. This got some good lyrics though and I completely agree with the title and the thesis Damon Alburn delivers here.

Some tracks kinda hit, but some don't hit at all. Not my vibe. 2.5/5.

It's fine! I would never be mad if it came on, but I'm not having a lot of fun lol.

Ok album, this is my second or third Blur album, and I’ve found that the music and singing don’t click with me.

33 songs. 2hr18mins.... fuck. Way to overstay your welcome by about 28 songs.

This ain’t a bad album, but Blur have better albums on this list, I don’t think this one needs to be here. Although this does mean they get one over on Oasis with their 3 albums vs Oasis’s 2 albums on the list. But a 2-2 draw would of be a fairer result, in-line with their other Brit pop contemporaries Pulp, Suede and the Verve.

Not the limp-dicked whinefest I feared this was going to be. So for exceeding my exceedingly low expectations, I award them two participation trophies. 🏆🏆

some 90s pop rock that really.... blurred on by. ha ha ha. there isn't much I wanted to explore here. when the ending zinger came on I was viscerally worried that I'd have to listen to another tune. 2/5, with extra demerits for its length

I do like a few blur songs, but I don't think I can listen to an hour of it. It doesn't have any of their best bops on it either

A little samey in places, but every time I was starting to get a bit bored, it would start to move in a different direction. Dreamy pop with a nice mix of different styles taken from older musicians and also contemporaries. Hints of everyone from Bowie to Ray Davies. Probably somewhere between a 2 and 4 for me for the first disc. Then it seemed to get more rambling and boring the longer I listened and was actually horrified to find I was still in the first third of the second disc when I was hoping to be near the end. As the last disc rolled on things started to get worse and worse, awful covers, horrible filler, I wish they had just stopped at the end of the first disc to be honest. Two stars I guess.
