Reviews (page 13 of 13)
An Eagle’s nest. A red kite soaring in a blue sky. Music heard in the air. Is it safe to assume that the term Stank Love is referring to sex, the smell, specifically? I’m familiar with the similarly labeled, Stank Foot, defined as an offensive, unpleasant odor. However, the title track appears to be celebrating Stank Love, so I’m confused. Unless, perhaps, the lyricist enjoys a stanky bounce, and then… This whole LP found me scratching my head. Take this lyric from an early track (‘So Fresh, So Clean’) as but one example: ‘… you’re so Anne Frank, let’s hit the attic to hide out for ‘bout two weeks…’ (for the sole purpose, the lyricist concludes, of having sex.) I can only hope he’s unfamiliar with what Anne Frank actually endured up in her attic. Stank lyric, my brother. And while the commentary on 'Stankonia' is hardly confined to odiferous sex, any political/cultural/racial, etc. statements that were being made just got lost on me. Hard to listen for any potentially thoughtful ideas amongst the company of songs like, ‘I’ll Call B4 I Cum.’ Captivating rhyming and rhythm style, clever effects and quality general studio work, I’ll give you that. I wish I could’ve made more sense of the lyrics, though. No doubt a cultural diversity too large for an easy and immediate crossing by this listener. Or, it’s entirely possible that 'Stankonia' just stank.
Some jaunty beatz and definitely better than most hip-hop/rap - bug that's not saying much. I don't like it.
"So fresh and so clean, clean!" If I lived in a show like the Truman Show, I'd make sure this song played every time I brushed my teeth or got out of the shower. However, I didn't find much to love about remainder of the song... or the album for that matter.
Well I enjoyed hearing the memorable songs, but some of them did my nut in and this album felt too long. Maybe my covid brain wasn't up to it, but yeah was well ready for this to be done by the end
Although I can appreciate the collaborative effort and the results, this just isn’t my genre.
хз
Hard to take this album seriously. Two good songs, a few ok songs, and the rest are silly or skits.
Bad. Not my kinda material.
Why does it break out into a year 7 drama class every other song? It wasn't the worst rap album on this but not for me. Very long
ok? i kinda stopped listening
Such a long and painful album to listen to. Miss Jackson is still good though
Far too long.
Too freaking long.
Good of it's type
Is it good? Is it annoying? Are there too many ideas on every song? Definitely too many skits (as per). Would I listen again? Nah. ('Ms Jackson' is a million percent banger though.)
2/5 didn't really stuck to me tbh
I'm sure it's great for what it is, but not my thing.
not a fan
Couple of good moments but it's not really my thing.
Only liked 1 or 2 songs
There's more interludes in this album than there were songs in the Tears for Fears album
I thought the production was pretty good, but overall, the lyrics didn't speak to me, and it felt like an exercise in speed rapping. More is not better, especially if what you're saying is mostly meaningless.
Decent but not my favorite. I thought I liked this album but I guess not.
Apart albumpje, eigenlijk vond ik alleen ms. jackson lekker
Very good rap album which I didn't like. Ms. Jackson was great but almost everything else is very much not my style. However I see why it's considered to be great and why it deserves to be on this list.
Some decent tracks on there other than the hits but I was largely bored for the rest of it. I can see its appeal within the genre but it didn't offer me much though I wouldn't begrudge somebody else putting it on to listen to. Also too many interludes.
No my jam although a few good lines
näää
Fine enough with some good ideas but the second half really lets it down. Miss Jackson is still incredible.
they have other songs?! haha but yea this is very hiphop and album is so loooong
Meh.
Generally, this embodies my typical experience with hip hop. It's overwhelmingly masculine. Overwhelmingly sexualised. It's crude, sexist, loud, and repetitive. Disappointing to learn that S/TLB's Roses and Hey Ya are likely just the exceptions to the rule. That said, Toilet Tisha hit like a truck. I have to praise it, for having the courage, or perhaps self-awareness to address an issue as heavy as teen pregnancy, leading to suicide. Is it hypocrisy, not connecting the dots between the hyper-masculine culture the album endorses and the social outcomes which result? Or is it setting the listener up, showing them all these themes and acts they might think of as "fun" (though I think of them as disgusting), before smashing them in the face with the consequences of their actions? That's not a question that I feel I can answer definitively. Though even the most masterful of plot twists cannot fully forgive what came before. 2/10.
"Rap is not music! It's talking in meter with rhyme and rhythm. While there is nothing wrong with rap, it is simply not music, and skilled rappers are not necessarily great musicians. There is no natural progression from rapping to music. Music allows for continuous improvement, and it is uncertain if rap offers the same infinite possibilities.". - Jerry Garcia
Neh, it lacks melodies.
-what is the start? -I just don't feel this
How is this considered an album that needs to be listened to- I mean one decent track in ‘Ms. Jackson’ but that was it and I’ve heard that track a hundred times or more before and never thought it’s mind blowing enough for me to go listen to more OutKast and this album did nothing to change my mind. Best track- ‘Ms. Jackson’ Worst track- the interludes… and there were quite a few of them. In fact the fact they lasted seconds arguably was better than the minutes I had to endure on some of the tracks! Poor 1/10
I hate it
Nope
No es mi taza de té
Was that intro necessary? Lol Oh my three songs were a very heavy way this album well i dont know about so many nuances of the album like it was kinda too heavy for my taste, honestly so far no memorable songs. i kinda was hoping the album would end quicker
It was a bearable album I don’t like rap or R&B and this did not make me
I'm sorry, I can't. A whole hour and 13 minutes? nope.
Is this a repeat?
Hated the lyrics.
Nothing worth hearing here. 1 star or F.

Utter crap
1.5 - not great and way too many skits
Some of the beats were decent, and a couple of vocal harmonies were pleasant on the ears, but as usual with these sorts of albums, the lyrics and rapping can get in the bin. It was a struggle of immense proportions to get through what I managed of it.
No va
Not for me
Ugh!
Ok so im not into rap.
I feel like this is the point where the challenge fails to be a useful exploration of music discovery. I’m not overly familiar with rap/hip-hop, and the few places I’ve connected to it share a lot of DNA with Jazz. I lack the knowledge and the bridges necessary to come to Stankonia from a place of understanding. In fact, it feels more like I’ve been dropped in the middle of an alien planet and asked to survive. I did not. I tried to find some positives. Ms. Jackson is listenable, and Spaghetti Junction has some nice beats. Musically, it’s often too chaotic (BOB). Lyrically it’s frequently too profane and just plain gross. For every song with a nice flow (Humble Mumble), there’s one that’s just irritating (Stankonia). It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever heard. The people who made it are clearly too talented for me to call this bad. It’s just entirely not for me.
I hated it. I just can't get into a whole genre where the music itself is awful and it's basically about shouty poetry. I've enjoyed something from every genre dating back to Gregorian chanting because there is always some sort of musicality to appreciate. But not this.
Only 2 songs are good
No, I still don't like hip-hop. At least I heard some parts that might interest me when I flipped through the album. But those were rather exceptions. I had no interest in listening to it more closely. 1/5
nope.
Shit.
this did not have to be an hour 15……… so hard to get through
Straight after Led Zeppelin I was always going to be a tough act to follow… Plus, this album is a bit shit…
Not my thing and not listenable
Bloated and boring. Not my thing.
It stank indeed, just as it said on the tin
Take out the bad language, and maybe we can talk Until them, forget about it
Not my thing
Best song: So Fresh So Clean Nice find: None Worst song: Gasoline Dreams Best as funk/pop. Rap is meh.
1/4 Nope. Don't like this. Never liked rap music and this album did not help change my mind on it
Not into rap.
In case you haven’t noticed, this genre does NOTHING for me!
Bad.
Quite like a couple of OutKast's up tempo tunes like the later Hey Ya! but there's only B.O.B on this album that get close. Some nice funky grooves but mostly not my cuppa.
I didn’t enjoy listening to this. Maybe I just don’t get it?
Still hate it after all these years.
Nope. I got irritated on the first few notes. Not for me.
DNF
I was pretty sure I wasn't going to like this. I was right! This album stank.
Hiphop broadly, Outkast specifically do nothing for me. There are only like 5 good albums in the history of rap. This ain't one of them.
Mediocre
"The best thing i can say about this record... is... there are real musicians on it... and they were paid to play some music... and some of that music is not bad... but, whenever i listen to a rap/hip-hop record... it always strikes me... the "bragadocio" is either cartoonish... or is an attempt at making the "artist" sound like he's sexy or something... remember when Elvis could get all the chicks without having one moan on his record? ah, the goodle days... anyway... most of this is noise... this type of thing always reminds me that there ARE aficionados of this genre... just like there are aficionados of Ripple, who scoff at Champagne.. this is not even an album you must listen to once, much less before you die... although it may quicken the process.... one star... for having some real music underneath there... somewhere... zzz"
No
Utter frigin' crap
Not for me.
ruim
If I dock every crossover hip-hop record for gratuitous n-word bombs and unneeded betwwen song skits, we get a lot of one star ratings. BREAK!
Not my style.
No my thing
I listened to the first 6 tracks of this album. I was familiar with Ms Jackson and So Fresh, So Clean, but the others I really couldn't like. The lyrics are extremely demeaning to women. Clever in places, but I draw the line at trivializing rape and subjugating women to less than human treatment. Not cool
Man, another hip-hop album. There's like 30 on the entire list, but I am being absolutely bent over lately by having to hear one of these every ~10 albums. How will I ever deal with the perils of having to sit on my ass for an average of 40 minutes-OH MY GOODNESS THIS THING IS AN HOUR TEN. SIGNAL THE TENNER ALARM This album is delving into absolutely suicidal territory. I am a firm believer in it being mostly-impossible for an album to be good for a full hour without overstaying its welcome or taking serious auditory damage somewhere along the way. Yet this album has the absolute balls to go for the hour tenner. You never go for the hour tenner. Well, this was a very, very looooong endeavour. It's a pretty big ask to make me critically engage with 16 tracks and this album fails at doing so, though there are some decent cuts along the way. The rhythm and rhyme on "We Luv Deez Hoez" is pretty alright. It's my favourite song on the album despite it's general trashiness. The quirky electronic sounds on "?" and "Toilet Tisha" do a good job of setting this album apart by creating a unique atmosphere. "Slum Beautiful" and the title track are the best examples of this atmosphere - both songs have a very unique, "cosmic" feel. However, on other tracks I felt that this electronic approach worked against the merit of the music like on "Red Velvet", which is threadbare largely because of the instrumental. "Gangsta Sh*t" is another example of a track I'd consider threadbare, though I don't think it's entirely the fault of the instrumental seeing that there's some merit to the music. Maybe it's the ADHD percussion on the song or something about the vocalists. I've no clue. Something about this album is just deeply stale to me. Maybe it's due to the songs being way longer than they ever needed to be and having repetitive compositions. May as well check the book on this entry - I am blind as a bat when it comes to hip-hop music. Let's see. Ambitious and innovative. B.O.B. is "possibly the most ambitious rap track ever". A thinking man's rap album. Established a name for southern hip-hop. Quite the rap sheet. I have no real way of arguing otherwise, though this album seems to be a solid inclusion for the hip-hop genre - can't knock it. In any case, this album gets a 1 from me for how mindnumbing the experience of listening to it was. Fuckayoooou, Outkast.
I can’t tell a good rap album from a bad one, but I’ve not found one yet that I like.
Not my taste
Again rip is bad. I know it has a place in the world, just not my world.
Accordingly to one of the track titles - all is just a gangsta sh*t
Cringe.
Well. This album has songs titled "I'll Call B4 I Cum" and "We Luv Deez Hoez" and the lyric "Lick my blunts and spit, like she do my dick, attempted murder dick, for ways I choke chicks, spit it in her eye make it hard to focus." just to select a few standouts.
Still not a fan of this type of degrading music. Painful to listen to, especially for over an hour.
Didn't do anything for me other than wish it was over sooner. The closest I got to liking any of it was Slum Beautiful with Cee-Lo, but that was about it. Not my idea of a good listen at all.
This is where hip-hop starts to crumble as a genre. Genuinely awful.

Did not like
Nah.
Please make it end.
I had higher hopes for this one. I had previously given "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below", a three-star rating. As far as this album goes it's a "No" from me. Musically, it is not bad, but I cannot connect with the lyrics here.
Nothing new, same old
When I started this journey of the 1001 albums I promised myself to listen to every album at least once. My goal is not only to listen to artists I already like but also discover new ones and new sound and music. A few of the albums I've listened to (this was nr. 247) have been a real challenge. Not that I am saying that the music is bad. But I simply don't like it. No, this is not correct: I simply can't stand it. It's simply not my music. Obviously there is a reason why I have never listened to that music. Probably it is now needless to say that this album is one of them. My first thought when through with the album was "Thank god it's finished". The same I thought with Back To Basics form Aguileira, Doggystyle from Snoop Dogg, Kollaps from Einstürzende Neubauten and a few more. Hope there aren't a lot of more such albums on the list!
Not for me 👎
No

Awful. Actually difficult to listen to.
Rap vom übelsten
It's rap. 'Nuff said
Stank.
Catchy little ditties. I wanted to sing along, but it didn’t sound quite right replacing all the N-Words with “N-Word”. And there a lot on N-Words. So not for me. And anyway, most rap sucks, and this one is no exception.
Another limited vocabulary experience with heavy reliance on the “N” & “F” words. Really not cool regardless of the source.
Is this a second one? Ah come on Probably better than the other
fuck that
I tried, really.
Not my thing at all - aside from one single I knew which lifted it a bit, the rest was not an enjoyable listen for me.
bad
Interesting, not really my thing
Acaso he dicho que me CAGA el RAP? 1
Not my thing
Sometimes you know that you will not enjoy an album when you see its cover. There are exceptions to prove this rule but in this case the cover told me all I needed to know about what I was about to listen to. A better related maxim is don’t judge a book by its cover. I believe in this so dutifully waded through this album. But there came a time when the whole process became unbearable and I had had enough. This type of music was never written for the likes of me at my stage of life so as I have written before, I cannot make a sound judgement other than to say I didn’t enjoy listening to it but good luck to those having the opposite view and derive a great deal of enjoyment from this.
Ugh!!
I try with hip hop but I really can't get into it, best songs on here are the more tuneful ones and less cussing ones, drawn out, long and turned off before the end
Sorry; it’s crap, son (ooh).
Nope
Yuck! No music here - just noise!
Just the one well known and loved song on here. The rest are far outside my wheelhouse.
C'est vraiment pas mon style.
Not my cup of tea. Still better than Kanye.
Didn’t grab me.
Hard pass
Pass
Hated it!!
Here’s the pathetic thing; if this is considered one of the greatest rap/hip-hop albums of all time, it’s proof how shitty the genre is. This SUCKS!!!!
Can’t say it’s my thing. Eminem and even P Diddy do it better
Not my cup of tea.
ms jackson is a 3.5
Couldn't get to the end for so many reasons....
Intense, angry-sounding
Not my kind of music
No. But I did try. Foul and anti cop lyrics.
Nope.
Not my kind of music
They seemed to try really hard to be as annoying as possible. A difficult listen.
p870, 2000. 1.5 stars. Rap, so the wrong audience. The usual tedious rants about motherfuckers, banana niggas, gangsta shit, blowjobs, blunts, hoes, punk pussy ass bitches and pussy wreckers. Bonus half star for Ms.Jackson, but otherwise this got boring reallll soon.
Not for me this one. Repetetive beats, pretty por stuff really.
Not my cup of tea, although found the lyrics interesting. Ms Jackson remains a top banger
Not a fan of this.
I lasted two minutes 🫣 take it away, it’s horrible
Does nothing for me.
aaa
Not a rap fan
For a brief while I liked Hey Ya*, but that exception aside, I am still completely unable to relate to this genre. And all these interludes they have sprayed all over the album: other than being disrespectful of my time, I really don't get their point. * Yes, I know it's not from this album.
Stankonia • Outkast • 2000 The teenage mentality of the opening and HIP HOP genre don’t bring high expectations. I feel dumber just listening to the first track. Ms. Jackson has always been so catchy though, so I raise my expectations (so i know Outkast after all)/ I raise my hopes. But its more a soundtrack for a violent or urban film, and i cant rate it within the genre as I stay away mostly... In summation, it might be highly rated as hip hip, or rap, but its not much music to my ears. Wouldn't turn it on again... I skip a few interludes and nasty tracks ont he ebay to the Cee-Lo collaboration (track 22). Sounds like a drug den scene in a ganster movie... historically an interesting artefact, perhaps - but not for listening Skip. next album.... 2
It’s a no from me

Hip-Hop. 1/5
Not many enjoyable moments. No Hey Ya! on this album.
I try to find some redeeming quality about every album I listen to, but there was nothing here that I remotely liked.
I tried...honestly I did, the one star I am giving goes to the mix and to me for being able to recall the Ms. Jackson track but overall this really didn't do a thing for me, at the time or now.
Outcast heeft wel een aantal leuke liedjes. Maar die staan niet op dit album. Bah bah.
Possibly a little unfair but I just couldn't get into it at all. And found it actively annoying.
Not a fan
Please send me something i can listen too. This is the epitome of 'rap acts that white critics like'
Not my thing
No thanks guys
Annoying
Nope.

Repetitive
Not my thing
Oh well, now I know how to misspell OUTKAST and feel good at the same time! Frequent sounds of arousal - I guess that music of sorts? Direct theft from Black Eyed Peas? They're the nearest to rap I ever got. The lyrics I could manage to catch seemed to frequently explicit (therefore loss of impact) I thought they had done a whole track about British Accent until I realised it was Mrs Jackson. Listened to half a dozen tracks and got REALLY bored. Life is to short for rap even in lockdown.
A couple of good ones but too many bad ones to make the list for me. And what was with all the interludes? it’s not like it was a really heavy or fast album where you need a breath. Just felt like filler!
B.O.B and sorry miss Jackson were the only reason for this album. Too many interludes all over the place.
Good album
