Irish type music.
nahh not really, I mean it was an interesting experience, but songs sound very similiar to each other, one song would be interesting but whole album was really boring :/
possibly one of the most interesting albums on this list (so far)! i appreciate this a lot: this is solid music and is a good combination of folk and punk. folk in general isn't easy for me to listen to, but combining it with punk creates a fascinating upbeat folk sound! but if there was ever any doubt it was folk, you've got that banjo and fiddle. that being said, i have respect for this album and it was a good listen, but it really isn't for me. bonus: how cool elvis costello produced this! what a range that man has.
This album definitely felt like a raucous free for all, which was mostly a fun, good thing. Overall though, it wasn't really my thing.
This has go to be The world’s longest Irish Spring soap commercial
It's everything you expect of The Pogues. I like it, it's deliciously Irish, it's all very samey though. I'd be quite happy to hear a couple of these songs at a time. An entire album just goes on too much though. If I were rating individual songs they'd probably mostly score higher thn the two I'm giving the album.
Came as a surprise, but tired of it easily. Though there was quite bit of variety in narrative for most tracks.
ok normally i would despise music like this but i actually found it quite entertaining and i don’t know why… it just was music i wanted to dance to? like obviously i wouldn’t go out of my way to request a song but i just thought it was fun.
Wasn't a fan of this one. I think I liked one song, maybe...
Pirate music
so many sea shanties
not my cup of tea. it wasn’t bad i guess, but i was bored the entire time. i’m sure witnessing this live would be a completely different story, but i personally was not feeling the energy just by sitting and listening. you know that one scene in Tangled? where they sing “I’ve Got a Dream”? this album reminds me of that song. the only difference is i actually enjoyed “I’ve Got a Dream”. now THAT makes me want to dance
Irish Celtic punk music is just not my thing. D.
I was in high school at the turn of the century when celtic punk made its resurgence with bands like Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly. In fact I saw the Pogues in their reformed state in the early 2000s but went mainly for dropkick murphys or something equally lame because we all had that phase. The tunes and shantys on this record are catchy as hell. They are currently stuck in my head! Against my will, I've been humming and whistling then all day. The instruments are different, and Elvis Costello's production is top notch. The ensemble is tight. The songs are poetry. I've just never had a drop off alcohol in my life, so I think there's a HUGE piece of the puzzle missing for me. I know these guys are kind of the OG and I was not born or a baby when this band was in their original form, but for me this album just reminds me too much of that dark time when celtic punk made its resurgance in the late 90s/early aughts and it's a time I am not all that eager to relive for 45 minutes or 1 hour depending on which album version you listen to. That's not their fault, it's just my own past getting in the way and haunting my perception. Stiff Little Fingers were always better imo anyway.
no i don't like this one
Whimsical spirit may improve it a tad, but I still fail to detect any worthy reason for me to listen to this.
The genre could be good if done well, but I'm not a big fan. It's missing the excitement and musical inventiveness to make this listenable. Also is it just me or are the tracks mixed pretty badly? Some songs just seem randomly much quieter than others
Just can't get into this genre as much as I think I should.
Can't seriously listen to Irish punk...
Irish Folk Music with a spirt of punk.
its Irish folk music?
Meh, Roger hates it. It's a niche to say the least
Not really my thing but I can see why it would be attractive to fans of this genre
First song is neat, the rest is oppressively Irish
felt like I was being serenaded by the druken sailor. not bad, but wouldn't say I really liked it
I'm not into the Pogues as much as others. Lyrics are good, but the overall sound wasn't my thing.
it's interesting, but it's so not for me
I had never heard of the Pogues before but if you want some Celtic pub sitting punk music this is your thing. Though not for me. It was ok. I'm not sure I get some of the references in the songs so I think I may have missed the point on a couple tracks.
wild cats
Nope. I mean, it's not horrible, but it has even less value for me. If you want drunken Irish shindigs there are better options.
2.5! Not bad. A poor man’s great big sea!
Anglo-Irish Celtic punk band, not really my style but not bad.
Irish music yayyy
I liked the storytelling style of some of the lyrics, but the music isn't for me. Never been a fan of whistles and banjos. Definitely not something I would ever choose to put on. Listening on Spotify, there were also some serious issues with EQ on some tracks - they kept losing high end. Actually preferred some of the additional tracks from the expanded addition... but not by much.
inte min kopp av te
Tämän vuosituhannen vastaavilla on menevämpi ote. Aikoinaan ollut varmaan ihan vekkuli.
seriously wondering how this album made it on this list. its not bad but i don't understand why its considered "need to listen to before you die!!!" 2.5
Think of an hour long mashup between Auld Lang Syne and the Spongebob theme song... it's an album of good sea shanties, but sea shanties nonetheless
Irish folk punk sounds like a gimmick. But maybe that's how non-US people feel about Wu-Tang or Willie Nelson? It's definitely supposed to be a joke...songs that aren't trying to be funny don't use the line "kicked in the balls". There is no way that the writer of the Spongebob Squarepants theme did not have Wild Cats of Kilkenny in mind when they were writing it. The volume on Jesse James drops...is that Spotify or does that happen on the album too? Why do bands want to end every album with their longest effort?
just cant
Medievalish-croisade type music boring 1.5/5
que
Would give it zero if possible
i dunno man 2/10 Will I add this album to my library: no
I try to be respectful on here because every one of these albums is someone's favorite — but I just really really do not like this. Irish folk music and punk do not go together. It's cheesy. It's kitsch. It's like a band you'd see at a pub in Leicester Square, or at a pirate-themed restaurant in Disneyland. Why is there a spaghetti western instrumental track? Was this sound considered fresh in the 80s? Also makes you think — there's lots of great cocaine music (Fleetwood Mac for one) and acid/mushroom music. Even weed music. I'm not sure if music so closely related with alcohol can really be any good. sidebar I'm pretty sure the intro to one of these songs is directly cribbed, like note for note, from Woody Guthrie's "Ain't Got No Home"
couldn't finish it, just wasn't my kind of music I guess
didn’t finish bc it’s not my type of music
This is so not up my alley that I just can't finish it. I'm sure it is good but it ain't for me.
hell no
Absolute drivel. Not for me. Just as awful as their other album in this list.
absolutely not
1.5 - Hoo-boy, not for me at all. I would give it an extra half star if possible, because I can see how some people would like this and the musicianship is good.
Terrible
I do not have any deep thoughts. It’s simply not for me.
Not for me
More English punk. What a shocker. 1.
2 seconds in and I knew this would be a tough album to get through. I am the bagpipe's biggest op, and I don't really care for folk music in general, so this was a terrible combo for me. "I'm a Man you don't meet everyday" was almost pleasant listening though. The whole thing is giving "The Pirates who don't do anything" 2/10
Not my cup of tea :)
Eh
Not for me
did not enjoy
Not for me. 1/5
Really? Top 1001 albums? Really.
I loathe these Pogues albums. Fucking hell
I know I should like this more but I just didn’t.
I just cant with this band. One song is enough
That's vulgar.
sobriety, purity, and tenderness
I already had If I Should Fall From Grace With God and awarded it one star in spite of it featuring the stone cold classic Fairytale of New York. So what in the world were they thinking adding a second Pogues album that does the exact same shit for another 45 minutes?! It’s somewhere between a barn dance and a renaissance fair and both of those things are a million miles away from being enjoyable listening for me. I will never ever willingly choose to put this on and I maintain there is no need whatsoever for TWO Pogues LPs to be on the list.
Oof. (26/100)
point0.
No❤️
Irish folk music with swearing.
Not my jam
I felt like I was in a pub singing Irish drinking songs with folks who'd had one too many pints.
This is annoying, and its also shit.
Was in a rush. Stopped after first song am afraid. Didn't do it for me, although will try again, promise.
no.
This music might be good if you're shitfaced, blackout hammered drunk and you don't care about melody, rhythm, feeling, or sound quality. Why would we harken back to a time before good music existed?
Yeha not my thing. Sounds like irish pub music for st patricks but not anything Id put on any other day
Puzzled how popular they got.
i tried to listen but it’s really not for me so i gave up.
Heard an Irish accent and a harp and immediately got mad and turned this off. I'm sorry but I'm not in the mood. Fav Songs: N/A
Not for me
Nah
No. *Only acceptable drunk, at an english pub.
Was funny and memey sounding for a song or two and then became quite irritating
AC: Black Flag has better sea shanties
I tried multiple times to listen to this album and I just could not. I do not understand why this album is on a list of 1001 albums I MUST hear before I die. Unless there’s some history or story to it that I don’t know about, I’d rather never hear it again.
Nope.
1/5
god how I hate folk music. boring, noisy and bad.
Not for me
Listened. Didn't like it
I did it all for me grog! Some of these albums are in this list to cover a specific genre/time/niche, etc I get it. But unless you're a drunken sailor or at a frat party on St Patty's Day...I can't see ever listening to this album.
All just sounds like Fairytale of new York to me and I'm quite tired of hearing that.
meh
Tried enjoying it. Just not for me. Best song: Dirty old town
oh my god make it stop make it stop make it stop
Not a fan! couldnt get past 1st song
That was rough. Really not my cup of tea. I made it only to track 3. Commendably.
🤨
xd irish/folk/drunk/pub music hard pass xd NNN
Too much Irish sea shanty jigs
not my coop of te'a
Did not like
Absolutely fucking not.
Yeah this shit was ass. I listen to similar music like Flogging Molly but this is just a much worse version of that. First the music, it's a symphony of random noise that is off key several times and most songs are just a loop 8 measure beat like hip hop but without the good lyrics. The lyrics are terrible and you want to talk about the singer? He can't find, hold, or reach a note to save his life. Seriously he sounds like the people in a pub at 2am when the karaoke is still going on. There isn't a single hit song and none of this will be played on my Spotify again. 1/10
Bro wtf was that.... Maybe good if it's St. Patricks Day and I'm drinking in an Irish pub but otherwise wtf....
Sorry, skipped.
Don't bother me with that kind of music unless I'm at my 5th pint of Guinness
Music for people who like to pour beer on the carpet while screaming-dancing drunk.
This sounds like a parody of cliche Irish music.
To są szanty. I to jeszcze w takim umpa umpa stylu. Myślę, że to mówi samo za siebie.
HATE this completely unlistenable
No
How tf did we get two Elvis Costello produced albums in a row? Smh, this is so bad it doesn’t even earn criticism.
hijos de puta, ¿polka?
Not my cup of tea.
It reminds me too much of annoying drunken people. I could never listen to that sober and on my own.
Nach dem vierten Song ausgemacht. Widerlich.
Awful
This album is not for me. Or maybe I'm just listening to it with the wrong context. If I was in a pub or hanging out with friends at a bar this album would probably be way more enjoyable. But, as I sit here in my room by myself listening to this album, I'm really not feeling it. And it's hard for me to get the punk social commentary when I can't understand the singer. Favorite song: A Pistol for Paddy Garcia Worst song:
fucccccck i hate this Irish punk bullshit. what are the lyrics? is that what the appeal is for this hokey trash? to each his own, maybe they really fought the man while they sang sea shanty's and kicked each other in the nuts at a bar. probably not. whiskey and more whiskey, i suppose. damn. ugh. fuck.
Couldn’t get into it.
I was idly listening to this album while working. I suddenly looked up thinking, "hmm, wow I'm really into this." And it turns out the album had just ended and Spotify was shuffling to other like bands. My relief from this album was that immediate and visceral.
Not my cup of tea
Bit shit
Haha this shit sucks
Still convinced this is some sort of joke that only I don’t get. So many better storytellers, so many better songwriters, so many better singers. I don’t even understand why the band stuck around to make it.
Wow! Great Irish beat…but the lyrics are not for me.
Can’t do the Celtic stuff.
Not my vibe, can see the craftsmanship and energy in The songs though
It was a weird album. It was a Irish folk music but as a punk album. I did not care for it.
eh. My 2nd Pogues album in the first 250. At least 1.5 too many. I suspect my thoughts about this are the same as the first - would likely enjoy live in a pub for 30-45 minutes with a pint, probably as the music is designed, but listening as an album - very uh not-enjoyable for me. Actually...I don't think I hated the other one as much as this. Vocals are shit and I cannot get beyond that. Not something I'd ever put on to listen to voluntarily. Might even go to the basement if it were on the upstairs stereo. um...track 3 "Wild Cats of Kilkenny" was nice (instrumental). 2/10 1 star
Slow, boring. Not terribly interesting. Couldn't wait for it to finish
Objectively there's nothing wrong with this album but Irish folk punk is just entirely something I don't have interest in. I feel like it would work well in a very specific scene in a movie or something and that's about it.
Will not listen
Beetje too much die dronkemansfolk.
Not for me, too Irish.
please no more Irish I can only take so much
Folky- not my favorite
Tohle album se mi vůbec nelíbí, nemám moc rád námořnickou hudbu a zde mě nebavila ani jedna pídnička.
Not my vibe at all
The album cover I found to be very misleading. It looks exactly like hundreds of metal covers I’ve seen before from all different decades, but alas the music is anything but metal. It’s instead a collection of what sounds to me like ye ole’ Irish shanties and colonial singalongs. I honestly don’t get it. There are a mix of tracks sung in combination by a male & female vocalist and who sing them very well. I don’t know if there are any other band members as I know nothing more about them and didn’t really care to find out. Either way...not my style. 1 Star!
Not a big fan of the genre.
Sea Shanties. All the raw lively nature of punk, but more sailors and pubs. Not my fav, but I get the appeal
This is either pirate music or Irish pub music (what's the difference?). Hard to listen to in a normal setting - probably need to get loaded to hear it and enjoy it. 2/10.
Irish pub punk music. Didn't finish.
Punk x irsk folkemusik, meget karakteristisk, stemningsfuldt
