Reviews (page 7 of 8)

Good drinking music. Pretty sure Steve Pattison first played this for me back in high school. Brown Eyes is the standout track for me.

j'ai aimé cela

Not necessarily my type of thing but there were some songs that I liked in it.

Kinda fun. Uniquely folksy.

Basically dropkick murphys drinking music

Songs: Sally MacLennane, Navigator

I like listening to the Pogues from time to time, and I thought this album was pretty solid. However I don't relate that much to the music and rarely go out of my way for it.

Of the few celtic bands/music I've listened to, this was really good by comparison. Will have to keep in mind for St Paddy's day! Highlights: -The Band Played Waltzing Matilda -Dirty Old Town -Rainy Night in Soho (Deluxe Version, orig. on Poguetry in Motion)

Drowning your sorrows in an Irish Bar music.

My disdain for the fiddle and banjo wasnt cured but I did enjoy the story's in all the songs. The Band Played Waltzing Matilda was especially good. Also their Wikipedia page describes them as 'Folk Punk' which made me feel physically ill.

I like these guys, but it has to be the right time and place to get into it. Morning is not that time.

Think I enjoyed the other Pogues record a little more. Once this one settles into a groove, it doesn't change it up too much. I still enjoyed it. Favorite tracks: "Wild Cats of Kilkenny", "The Gentleman Soldier", "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda"

This LP is a strange collision when it makes its way in through my ears. On one side, Celtic folk music, something that echoed through my childhood, softer over time. On the other, punk from across the pond: I only discovered that after I turned 20. The effect, for me, is disorienting. It helps that the instruments are rather raw, if recorded extremely clearly, and the arrangements and singing more polished (mostly). It doesn't exactly scratch an itch on first listen, but I think it could, if I worked at it for a bit. I suppose none of the titular elements are things I have the stomach for.

Nah. I'm good, thanks. The Pogues are just not my bag.

2nd Pogues album from the generator. While the general vibe is quite similar and I appreciate it, I liked the other album way more. This one lacked something special and memorable 2/5

my galician ass is kind of fed up with all this celtic bagpipe music and dancing in circles vibe but lets acknowledge the spirit of restoring tradition through the cultural influences of its time the combination of punk intensity and traditional forms creates a profoundly human music, although its cultural imagery may be less immediate for those who do not connect with that universe, or less powerful having been constantly exposed to this particular tradition without having felt a deep cultural connection, as is my case

Appreciate a few catchy tunes, but I'm just not going to play this album again

Too long, too boring to listen to outside ireland

i don’t know how i felt about this. it was cool

What the fuck is this?

I really wanted to like it. I couldn't get into most songs and the flow wasnt there.

Just not my bag. 2.5

shane macgowan is/was such a double edged sword, as his lyrics and aesthetic made The Pogue the Irish folk band to cross over in any great way but his voice is easily the worst part and he slows down the instruments to match, which given how good it is when they get to cut loose is a real shame.

Going in, I was very curious what folk-punk would sound like I don’t think I’d listen to it again, but it was different. Maybe I would try it again if I ever find myself on a pirate ship. Or drunk. Or drunk on a pirate ship!

Twee sterren dus.

passt nur in Bars in Schottland/Irland😂 3/10

quite energetic in general and mostly good lyric writing, but the overall sound is somewhat monotonous and the vocals are a style i'm very much not fond of.

some odd different punk genre? 2

Runs together

A really unique Irish folk sound with some hard-hitting subject matter. I'm sure this sounds better after the seventh guinesss

Sounds like an Irish version of the Spongebob Squarepants theme

Hey, second Pogues album. Didn't know they had another list album in 'em. I mentioned the band in my review of Trafalgar from six days ago, so it's humourous that they're presenting themselves now. One of my favourite reviews that I've written for this site was for "If I Should Fall From Grace With God", where I prattle off a bunch of lyrics from The Mollusk in a vain attempt to construct a coherent line of criticism. Looking back at it now, the semblance between both albums is only superficial and I don't care for The Mollusk all that much in the first place, but it's fooney. I enjoyed writing it. Anyways, I don't actually remember much about their previous outing aside from it being nautical and one of the songs having the faggot word in it. I expect more of the same from this album, albeit without such pejoratives. Here goes. Yeah. This sure was another Pogues album, huh? I wasn't too crazy about this one. I can appreciate the rousing quality that this music has, but its appeal is ultimately limited. Celtic punk is one of those genres which exists in its own bubble. I can see this album striking a chord with a good number of Brits in addition to their built-in Gaelic audience, but outside of that the appeal and influence of this music is greatly limited. To my Straylien sensibilities this music is kind of just gimmicky to me. Same vocal delivery. Same instrumentals. Largely similar subject matters. The aforementioned vocal melodies are what really inhibit this music - there isn't much which can be done with the signature Gaelic performances. Overall, this was an unengaging listen. Book time. "...a work of raw and raucous beauty." "...their second album bled passion, poetry, and energy." Elvis Costello produced this album and married the bassist of the band. Man, we aren't getting away from that fucker, huh? The "...writing had flourished since their debut". It "...sounded wonderfully out of synch with the mid-1980s scene." Wikipedia says this album was very warmly received by critics and has received enduring acclaim. It also performed well on the UK and New Zealand charts, though the sales figures make it a bit of a niche album regardless. I've played defence for world/cultural music before, but it's difficult not to feel that the Pogues are punching above their weight by having two of their albums on the list. That being said, they're the most prominent artist in the genre they belong to and I suppose having an album with Irish roots isn't entirely English nepotistic bullshit. I'm okay with my Irish friends having another list album. Say what I will about this music, it's certainly unique and the music belongs to a specific group of people, both of which are traits I find to be endearing. I cosign this inclusion.

Irish folk songs to a “punk” music. Meh.

Album 162. Rum Sodomy & The Lash — The Pogues (1985) Wtf, how did I end up in an Irish Pub with folk music. Not bad, but not for everyone. 2/5 No liked songs

I’m sorry but no. There is something about the Pogues that sets my teeth on edge. (See also Dropkick Murphy’s) Maybe it was Stockholm Sydrome in effect, but I found myself enjoying the album the deeper I went. An hour was still too much. 2/5 Dour and depressing, I needed more Guiness and whiskey before diving in.

This list is ridiculous

This entire record just sounded tacky to me. Why is there a song about Jesse James? Favourite Track(s): And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda Least Favourite Track(s): Jesse James

Muy lento pero buenas instrumentales.

Never heard of album or band. Low expectations based off album cover and band name. Sick bed is interesting. It’s what I was expecting and not at all what I was expecting at the same time. It’s very pirate y. Good songwriting, pretty catchy. The old main drag is pretty similar. Nothing special about it. Well written. Kilkenny is cool. Really cool sounds. I’m a man is fine. Too slow for me. Good vocals tho. I lie pair of brown eyes. Really fun. I want to sing along. Sally MacleanAnne is more of the same. It’s catchy and fun but nothing life changing. Pistol for paddy Garcia bumps. Great mix of modern and old school instruments. I like the songs with no lyrics the best so far. Dirty old town is fine. Good lyrics again. Nothing life changing. Don’t like the singer in Jesse James. This is another one that sounds very similar to the first few. Good story telling at least. More pirate bullshit on navigator. It’s fine. I like the harmonica. Billy bones if forgettable. Gentleman soldier is weird. Why would you just not get a women for the women part. I hated that song honestly. Again good story telling on waltzing Matilda, but it’s over done at this point. Need more variety than straight story telling for 45 mins. And the themes are all kinda of the same. Always has to do with being on a boat. Overall the album is fine. Musically and lyrically it’s impressive but it will never be the style of music I like. Straight average album, 2.49 stars.

Definitely something you have to be in the right mood for. I enjoyed this more than I was expecting as it reminded me a bit of the fun Scottish songs in the pub in the movie Once. Probably not something I'll listen to often but scratches a very specific itch if you need it.

It was okay, not my favourite that I have listened to so far

I can tell this is good but I don't actually like it. I do like the song I'm a man you don't meet everyday and a pair of brown eyes is pretty good but the rest of it miss me.

Drinking songs should have good choruses. Wasn't paying close attention but I didn't really hear any on this album

Not for me

When your looking for traditional Irish pub style sounds this album fits the bill splendidly. I don't realy care for the tunes that cater to the rowdy drinking crowds but some of the rest ranges from bearable to pleasent.

Pirate ahh music

I don't like irish folk

Well to prepare for this experience I listened to No one is as Irish as Barack Obama. And except for the first and last sang, NOIAIABO clears this whole album and its not even close. The first one I would politely describe as drinking during st-paddys day in a random bar in america slop. the Band played waltzing matilda is not their original song, but its done well here. I dont think id be happy to stumble upon anything in here really, but also I dont think Id notice. Overall I would say the songs range from fine to forgettable, but hey NOIAIABO slaps and I wouldn't have listened to it otherwise.

I should like this and the Pogues, but i dont. Lets start with the good: the playing is great, the energy is up there, it has good stories and on the surface a rebellious attitude. On the reasons i dont like it: im an englishman who moved to Ireland a decade ago, so i'm not Irish but have skin in the game. To me this represents an Ireland that is out of date, offensive and only exists any more for the tourists. I know that the eighties and early 90's weren't great here but the Ireland it describes isnt recognisable. Its stereotype of grime and alcoholism is inflated by the nostalgia of emigrants. In the modern day, it only resonates with americans who say they are 1/16 Irish and use it as an excuse to drink. Plus Shane MacGowans voice is awful and he needed help for his alcoholism not glorification. There is a wealth of incredible Irish trad and modern music that should be here, but for whatever reasons of timing and culture, this made the cut. If you like this, use it as an entry point and discover what Ireland really was and is.

Growing up here in Nova Scotia this music has been pervasive (or perhaps invasive) to every party, bar, etc that I have ever been too. Sometimes it is much worse than what we hear on this album sometimes it’s better but it’s always there. I get that some people like it but I do not. It’s impossible to listen to as just background because it somehow claws its way to the front of your brain. I was hoping that the Pogues who I’d heard of but not registered would bring something new to this sound but alas it is just the same. If you like it I can recommend no better place to live than Nova Scotia, if you do not stay away.

As a cultural phenomenon, an illustration of how traditional folk music is evolving, I see why this album has its place in this list. Yet, it's repetitive and of little to no value outside of its niche.

Shove your tin whistles up your arse.

Best Track - "Dirty Old Town"

Traditional? Serious? Drunk? I’d guess drunk

The only time this would be even moderately tolerable would be in an Irish pub on St Patrick’s Day. Two star because it’s good for what it is, I suppose. (2)

Mm no se. Crudo cocido

not a fan

I can appreciate the Pogues but this aint really my jam. too much hurdy gurdy and tin whistles i suppose.

Didn't give it a real chance, but the portions I samples didn't sound up my alley

If I could give this negative stars I would

Album #27: Rum Sodomy & The Lash Genre (W): Celtic punk, folk punk, new wave Singles: A Pair of Brown Eyes, Sally MacLennane, Dirty Old Town I have not listened to this album before. Thoughts: This is an interesting album. I think it’s one of the first Celtic punk albums but I could be wrong. I may not know what they’re singing about, but the music reminds me a lot of pirates and things like that. Favorite songs: A Pistol for Paddy Garcia, Jesse James, Navigator, The Band Played Waltzing Matilda

The volume varies so much from song to song. Some ok some are unbearable.

I had no idea Celtic punk was even a thing. However, it’s not really my cup of tea

Fun but not an album I’d return to

Pre dropkick murphys. This sound is less punk

All a bit trashy for me.

Celtic fun! Not something I’ll be going back to but a good time while it lasted

Its pretty funny, made me feel like a pirate of today london. But thats all, cause taking it seriously wont take you to nowhere. As a joke it is good, and this is it. 2⭐

Elvis Costello did the production for this album, he should stick to it he's quite good at that. This album sounded pretty good to me at first but it did get repetitive and old fast. The songs are all very samey and not really a subject matter I care for, it almost feels like a caricature of Ireland with how much they talk about drinking and little else. But I did really like the instrumentation so there is that!

Not my cup o' tea.

Huh, never heard the Pogues before. Kinda different but gave it two listens and no song jumped out at me.

Not something I would expect to like, but the first 3 songs were impressive. The only issue was as this went on it stayed the same, but was a drop down from those first 3 songs.

I did not like it or the singers voice but it had a consitent theme.

Hated it.

Sounds like a bunch of drunken sailors

I really don't like Irish folk...

nomol pooogues. ha s andere vo ihne nöd soo berauschend gfunde. ich loh mich nomol druf iih. erste song najaa bitz punk energy cool aber meh. old main drag watschlet sochli vor sich her. wild cats of kilkenny au afoch irische folk? ich check nume so halbe. d bassistin singt super uf i'm a man you dont meet everyday. a pair of brown eyes seg de hit gsi i guess? tönt scho afoch wie en alte irische song. find alles chli hobbit musig? waltzing matilda het mega schöni blöser. git e 2 i am tschudligung?

Not bad but also not my favorite, respect tho

I’m sure they’re great. Not my jam.

Appreciate it for what it is but not for me outside of raucous pub setting

Ok.

I find the accordion one of the most annoying instruments, hence I dislike most Irish music.

Meeehhh I love Fairytale of New York in December but this just doesn't do anything for me. 2/5

no thank you

If i were to sail the seas with me' maties, it would be perfect background music. Very folkmusic, not bad, just not my perfered album. Alestrom if they were not heavy ahah

Very basic.

Not exactly my cup of tea and not something ill come back to but some parts were alright to listen to in passing

Folk punk huh? I'll be honest, I have a bias against most Irish music. I have nothing against it personally, but I've had so many friends who decided that being 1/16 Irish was their best personality trait and decided to just listen to music like this and drink Guinness, now I'm a bit burnt out. Listening to this brought me back to those days, and I realized I still needed more time to heal and forget.

I'm sure this is for someone, it's just not for me

This is not fairytales of New York

Note à moi-même : à écouter quand j'ai l'goût d'être en criss.

A Pair of Brown Eyes //

Fuck off

Easy to convey the feeling of this one. It's Irish.

Rum Sodomy & the Lash sounds like a half-sloshed poet leading a pub singalong. messy but oddly magnetic if you’re in the mood for it.

Won't catch be listening to an album like this unless it's St. Patrick's Day.

Fav: Dirty Old Town Least Fav: The Gentleman Soldier These definitely sounded better blasting from the speakers of the Irish bars

Would be great fun live. This, not so much.

This was the album which brought the Pogues into the public spotlight. I wasnt a huge fan, probably as im not actually Gaelic. Unfortunately I still have Sally MacLennane as an earworm, its a bloody good song. 'Dirty Old Town' is top drawer too. Now I shall flush that song out of my ear and forget about this album for the next God knows how many years.

I liked it but I acidentally olayed the album twice and didnt even realise I’d already listened to the songs 💀

I‘m just not build for this

I need some rum. This could be on the soundtrack of a pirates of the caribbean movie, or some episode of backyardigans. Not something I'd go out to seek and play on my own time 2/5

It's nice, but becomes very samey, very quickly. Still, nice.

I can only listen to so much Irish drinking music. Nothing here was bad, but goddammit it was all the same song. Hurt my head lol. It was bad as an album but if I was just listening to an occasional song here and there maybe I'd like it more. Actual rating....1.5 Liked Songs: "The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn" , "I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day" , "Sally MacLennane" , "A Pistol for Paddy Garcia"

liked songs: I'm A Man You Don't Meet Every Day, A Pistol for Paddy Garcia Not my favorite thing I've ever listened to. 2.25

Kadett, HDH - Patersdorf, Deutschland Nervig auf Albumlänge

Not my tempo..

I listen to The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn just about every St. Patrick's day; it's an all-time banger. But then the next track The Old Main Drag is damn near unlistenable. This sums up my feeling on this album, and on the Pogues in general: some really great songs (Dirty Old Town is another, though this may be nostalgia talking) and some absolute dreck (Navigator, I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day, others). This tends to fall along the high-energy, fast song vs. slow song divide because those slow songs really fucking drag and Shane MacGowan (RIP) is not that great of a crooner.

alright, love Irish stuff

A couple songs were ok but did not enjoy most of it. Last song was really long and bad..

Folk ain’t my favourite genre, or a genre I like however this was alright. Definitely the highlight was the band played Waltzing Matilda and when they sung the lyrics out of that. Classic Australian song that made me feel something, and a good end to the album. However, again not a fan of folk.

It's very Irish lol

I appreciate the variety but hard not to feel goofy listening to this at my work desk (2.5/5)

I like Irish folk music in theory, but a whole album of it gets boring.

I should like the Pogues, I really should. I had my Enya fase and I liked all kinds of modernized folk music. But somehow I don't dig them. I can understand they are good, but not for me. Too bad.

Sounds like a group of pirates singing traditional Irish folk songs. Rubbish. The storytelling the only saving grace.

pirate music

Interesting to listen to the album. Won't be on my favourite list.

I was expecting to hate this as their song that blocks the airwaves every Christmas makes my arsehole itch! It wasn't as bad as I was expecting, and I did make it all the way through, but it never once got me excited or appreciating the music.

I think my lack of understanding of this genre doesn't help me at all because sitting here listening to this I just think something obviously stupid about the music and its the realization that Celtic rock or Celtic music as a whole is what I associate with pirate music (besides Sea Shanties) and that's, well, dumb because I know there's a lot of history behind this music and a TON of people love this band (I realized as much when the singer died last year). So obviously I hate making a memey comment and just leaving it there as my only take away of the album... but like, it is aligned in the exact kinda music I just don't vibe with much if at all which makes it harder to enjoy, generally music that goes more along the lines of folksy music gone rock or gone punk whose vibe just doesn't always work for me, especially with how theatrical it can get. Basically, it conjures up the same feelings as when I listen to folk punk bands like AJJ and I just do not enjoy that so I have a hard time with this one when it goes for a faster sound, I think I enjoyed more the slower and more melancholic songs but honestly? Not by much. Oh also this album has the Elvis Costello connection so there's also that

Each song is alright but listening to them all in a row is a bit much

Julemusikk

A full album of pirate/irish bar-punk is just a bit too much to take. The musicianship and energy isn't entirely lacking, but this kind of music and vocals are not for me.

I'm afraid you have to be born to listen to this album, but I'm not. I'm not Irish and I'm not in Ireland at the moment. But I've been to Ireland three times, always for scuba diving. Sounds crazy, but no, it's definitely interesting and of course special. I've been to the pub before. Often around lunchtime when the curtains were drawn and you had to go through the side or back entrance, and of course in the evening to drink a Murthy's. There was music there too, but more classical and less in the style of the Pogues. Unfortunately, I only give the album a "lash" and at least 2 stars, because I think in the right mood and more than a Murthy's, the album is definitely bearable.

Irish folk punk. I would put this more on folk than punk. Not to say it didn't have punk, but the overall vibe of the album was less energy than I expect from just punk. I think lyrics may be important to this band, and I do not typically understand lyrics well until many more listens and more in depth listens so this album was a miss for me.

Did not connect to this at all. I’m sure it was important in combining folk, rock and traditional Irish music, but I did not really enjoy listening to it.

Ok, but not something I would listen to for itself. I could tolerate it for background music

I usually enjoy music with folk elements, but this is just too much. Extremely grating and annoying to listen to. I did enjoy the storytelling aspect of the album, though. 2 stars

My second Pogues album on this list and I have to wonder why it's here. Only popular in its home country and I fail to see much influence outside a small niche. I'm going to post my review from the other album below as it fits here too. Tradition Irish music fused with punk is an interesting idea. When it works it's raucous fun. It doesn't always work for me though, and a full album at once is too much.

This is silly, unserious music

Definitely had some spunk to it, but not something that I'm going to be listening to on the regular.

No thank you

The Pogues are not for me, but I connected with If I Should Fall From Grace With God more. This one felt a little more theatrical, or less authentic.

Not my thing :/

Is this essential? No. Is it fun? Yea sure, in an ironic way Best Song: Sallu McLennee Rating: 4.0/10 2 Star

Was not enjoyable.

I wonder what music would play in the background of police dramas set in the northeast U.S. if the Pogues didn’t exist.

Feel like a jesters about to jump out my screen. Not for me but I can appreciate the artistry

Heroin was an interesting song but otherwise the album was way too hippy-dippy for my liking. Felt like it was smelling it's own farts but maybe that's just my dislike for hippie culture

I wish I liked this album more than I did. I feel the passion and folksy authenticity behind the songs, but I just did not connect with it at all. If you love Irish folk music you'll love this album, I unfortunately don't and didn't. Wouldn't hate listening to a few individual songs, but the album is a bit much. Top tracks: A Pair of Brown Eyes, Dirty Old Town

I now want to get into bar fights

too one-note sry (like i know that's their thing but ...)

i respect it but do i like it? no!

i don’t know why The Pogues are on this list multiple times. they have a very specific sound, and this time around i didn’t like it as much as i think i did last time. it was never BAD but there was nothing that good in this album either

Not really in the mood for an hour of Irish music this morning, but when am I ever really. Dirty Old Town the only one worth revisiting

I would give this 1 star but I know Kid Rock Devil Without a Cause is on this list and this Pogues album isn't as bad as that. So a begrudging 2 stars here. I do not like irish folk/sea shanty style. Sounds like bad SpongeBob music.

I wish I had more to say other than that this feels severely out of place nowadays, and it makes me feel too sober to fully appreciate.

This kind of shit is fun occasionally as a gimmick, but an entire album? No thank you

It’s so Irish

I felt like I was back playing Walt Disney racing and this was the background music to the Pirates of the Caribbean course. Have heard of the Pogues and was excited to give these a listen. I wanted to like and I tried, but this wasn't for me. I guess if I was drinking at an Irish bar I would enjoy more or maybe get so annoyed I'd head somewhere else. I just couldn't get into it... Why did I keep thinking of that joke, What's a Pirates favorite letter? So that's it. I thought of Walt Disney's racing and Arrrr....... 2

This list did not need two Pogues albums...

The highs are mid , overall it’s mediocre but an interesting sound …. Worth a skim

Folk/Punk/Celtic Punk/New wave Dirty Old Town - Sally MacLennane - A Pair of Brown Eyes - A Rainy Night in Soho

Well, it's a mix of styles I don't like (punk/folk) and sounds kind of piratey (another theme I don't like). Good for them, but not so good for me. Rating: 2

OK in small parts, a bit annoying in others.

How do you know if someone is Irish? Don’t worry, they won’t shut the fuck up about it Anyway, an interesting mix of traditional sounds and of the time modern stuff. Still, unnecessary to hear before one dies

"Are ya ready, kids?" "Aye aye, captain!" "I can't hear yooooooou!" "AYE AYE, CAPTAIN!" "ooooooooooh....who lives in a pineapple under the sea?"

Very spongebob like. Not my style but I respect it.

Wow that was not good.

I’ve had a rash or horrible options and this selection didn’t help.

Ei ihan lähtenyt! Sanat olis voinut kuunnella kai paremmin. 2/5

Very confused. This album is pretty widely acclaimed. Can't understand why

I understand the idea of picking albums outside of dominant cultures, and this isn't terrible, but how is this different from any other half drunk "irish" band on any stage in the world right now? yeah there's a bit of punk ideas thrown in there, but I just don't see it.

Not for me

My oh my that was dull. If I wanted to listen to an elevated version of that style I'd listen to "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Really no peaks and a few troughs throughout the runtime. 2.4/5 -> 2/5.

Too much exposure to Irish-American nonsense has ruined the possibility of ever enjoying this actually pretty decent album of Irish folk music (reels, waltzes, jigs, ballads, heavy use of accordian, penny whistle, mandolin, and basic snare drum kits) with modern lyrics and a sped up punk approach.

Sorry, not for me, not for the me I am now. Maybe a me that was hard driving, hard drinking, hard living etc, But, it's just not appealing. Thanks. I know it's for other folks. You folks enjoy away. 2 stars.

They are much more skilled musically than most punk. But it's not meant for me and I don't like it.

not really my vibe, but i’m sure the lyrics are meaningful to someone!

Smelly folk punk.

Not my bag, found this tricky to get through.

Talented musicians who enjoy crude riffs off traditional Irish folk music. After a song or two, I grew less interested. Grateful this album doesn't have their xmas song about the drunks in lockup.

Wasn’t really feeling it. I get the appeal maybe I give it a try some other time

The novelty of this album got me through the first few songs. However, the longer I listened, the more I felt trapped at a renaissance fair on pirate weekend.

I don’t like it. Not for le

I didn’t love or hate it. It was different

I'm happy it exists, I don't personally like it all that much though. Will I listen to again: 0%

I don’t hate it, I liked “if I should fall from grace with god” better.

Ok. I understand why it’s important. But that still doesn’t mean I have to like it. At the risk of sounding absolutely insufferable, it just sounds like I’m at a St Patrick’s Day themed amusement park. Just not for me.

Not for me

Not really enjoyable. The instruments were a bit annoying and the vocals were mid. Some okay story telling, I bet there’s probably some story behind this album if I do more research. But as is I didn’t care for it

I don’t really like the pogues I’m sorry everyone

I don’t know why on Earth The Pogues were included on this list more than once. It’s fine enough music, but it loses its unique charm after the second album. Unfortunately this one didn’t do it for me.

too long. can't listen to irish music that long

It's alright. I'll crank this up next St. Patrick's Day but probably won't be revisiting this otherwise.

I appreciate the lyrics, I do. Shane was a great storyteller. But musically, almost as tough to get through for me as a country album.

i'm sure if i were drunk at an irish wedding, this would be wonderful

This album sounds like it needs a shower. Not a fan.

Grating drunk sounds

Both traditional and political. The instrumentation is cool stuff I hadn’t heard before. Similar to Billy Bragg at points. Feels like a pint.

Can’t deal with this vocalist

Not my fav

Rating: 5/10

Traditional Irish music. Fun to hear for a few minutes but not something.id go buy.

The overall vibe of this album was just annoying. I did not like the lead singer’s voice, and there is only so much Irish folk I can take. There were a couple songs that I might have been neutral about in isolation, but in the context of the album, it was all too much, and I just wanted them all to be over. Also, I’m typing this out as the final song plays, and it is just WAY too long without any major changes. It feels like it is dragging along. This gets 2 stars instead of 1 star for the “Waltzing Matilda” shout-out that brought me back to learning that song in elementary school.

Elite music if I was drinking at a pub

Felt like a scullery maid on a pirate ship while cleaning with this album in the back. That is really the only upside ☠️🦜

1. the zick bed - 0 2. the old main drag - 0 3. uuuild catz - 0 4. im a man - 1 5. a pair of brouun eyez - 0 6. zally - 1 7. a piztol - 1 8. a dirty old touun - 1 9. jezze jamez - 1 10. navigator - 0 11. billy bonez - 1.5 12. the gentleman zoldier - 1 13. the band played - 1

If the writers of this list actually cared about Irish music, the Clancy Brothers, Chieftains, or Dubliners would also be on it. The Pogues are a demonstrably worse band in every way except they're not afraid to cuss a little. I believe their popularity is attributed more to the celebration of Shane MacGowan's alcoholism-soaked aura than any actual musical merit.

No motivation to finish this album

Folk-Punk-Vorreiter.

Ok album but not my thing

Somebody unplugged the Soundgoodinator for the last few songs. What's up with that. I liked "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" so much more. This one seems so empty when compared to that one. It's much slower and much less fun, with horrible production (courtesy of the man whose name you must never utter on this site).

If I enjoyed modern Irish music I would like this. It wasn’t bad just not for me

More than one time, the shrillness of the song made my ears bleed

Ahhh pirate music, with PUNK! It’s not something I would put on to listen to but it is fun and not like anything else we’ve listened to on this platform. 4/10

I've tried to listen to The Pogues. My father loves them and played them in the house growing up, and I have a friend who's always recommending them to me. We had another album of theirs on this list about a year ago too. It's just not for me. I enjoyed this album more than the other one. The band is excellent. They can switch gears and play a variety of moods and styles. And there's no shortage of showmanship. They must have had a hell of a live show. But the Irish music can get a bit grating for me and there's only so many late night tales of drunken debauchery I can do. Much respect to them though because they're being 100% themselves and I'm happy that they've found such a wide audience. 🙏

Good in patches, but hard work for a whole album. They've got two speeds - quick folk punk, and slow melancholy ballads. Both good in their own right, but both done a bit to death. The opener was probably my highlight, followed by the last song - the best of each the two speeds. Lowlight was definitely the Gentleman Soldier where he does the silly voices. Don't think there's enough there to give it more than a 2 though, not really for me. The other Pogues album we had was better.

Very Irish.

Interesting enough

Meh. Didn’t really like Irish music.

- Feeling the overwhelming urge to slam several beers... - This type of music is always fun for a song but 45 minutes straight of it is a lot tbh - Wish there were more fast songs on this

- I can’t take this music very seriously - feels like something Irish folk sing in a pub - I surprisingly enjoyed the last song, told a great story

AHOY MATEY!

Not really my style fr, they kinda felt like shanty’s

Probably one of those ones I can acknowledge and respect the following this record has, but I don’t think it was made for someone like me. There’s obvious brilliance there, but probably not one I’ll be chucking on. Failed to connect a lot this listen. Two and a half. Fave track: Dirty Old Town

2.6 - Too fucking Irish for me. Maybe I'd enjoy it better if I were wearing a Boston Celtics jersey while eating a bowl of Lucky Charms.

I'd enjoy listening to these songs more somewhere in a pub in Ireland on a Saturday evening rather than at home on a sunny morning. Albums like these have a time and place for them. I couldn't really got into it.

I had Peace and Love on cassette back in the day, but overall I never took to the Pogues. This record is fine, there are some good songs on here, but it's not a revelation.

just too irish for me

Irish shanty ass music

I don't dislike The Pogues, but they're an immensely context dependent band. If I'm a few pints in at a bar? Sure! Throw them on. If I'm on the subway at 8:30 AM for my morning commute? Less enthused. 2/5

I decided to read the lyrics this time, british people are incomprehensible. Not that it changed much, but I think I got the gist. I got tired of this sound pretty quickly. The higher wpm songs like Billy's Bones and The Gentleman Soldier, and the instrumental one carried it to 2 stars

its was bad but kinda okay

Kind of annoying. Had to resist the urge to keep skipping to the next song.

The first song was energetic and enjoyable enough, and I liked it more than I thought I would, but then the album kept going. None of it was bad, but certainly not for me, and an eight minute song to top off the album just felt unnecessary. Just not really my genre unless in very small doses.

Fantastic if I was a pub in Ireland with several Guinness down my throat but I'm not. What else to say haha

I don’t know. All the songs sound the same. It’s not bad but I don’t think I’d listen to it again.

A unique sound, but VERY One Trick Pony-ish. That, and Shane McGowan's toothless voice is pretty shite, if we're being honest. 2.5 stars, rounded down to 2.

Why is this a thing

Not my favorite genre but can appreciate the instrumentation. Don’t love the vocals

Not my style

irish af

Yeah not sure about this one, couple to good songs, but comes across a bit like drunk Irish music, not sure if it needs to be on the list. I’m sure others will love it though.

It’s ok. Not my thing. Violently Irish.

I like an Irish folk song, I even like 5. I don't like 18.

okay, not my favorite genre.

Man nothing like some jolly Celtic punk in the wee hours of the morn.

This is my new anthem for when I’m downing pints at my local Irish pub. Too bad I live in America. And I don’t drink.

A good ol Irish jig is fun every now and then to slag off Harry kunt with the mates... 2.5

Didn't enjoy it but thought it was good for what it is.

Kinda cool, but not my thing overall

A very disjointed album. At times it's great snapshot of the Irish diaspora around North London. And then it fades and struggles with back to the Old Country fiddly diddly. Which isn't really for me, I'm afraid. Shane's voice sounds strong throughout, particularly on Dirty Old Town. He belts it out like an old pro. It's probably an album that's best appreciated after five pints, rather than on a miserable, overcast Monday morning.

Foot stomping banjo plucking

I can understand the appeal of this album/type of music but I don't like it

When I first saw this album title and the cover, I didn't expect it to actually sound like shanty music, so that was a bit of a surprise. I don't think I'm as into the shanty music as some people seem to be, but it sure is unique. This album might have gotten a higher rating if it was shorter, because the novelty wears off somewhat fast and then the album just sounds boring. It's not awful, but not my things, really. I'm okay with one shanty, but not eighteen. My favourite song was I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day.

Fav songs: - A Pistol for Paddy Garcia

Trent’s back though

do you ever actually have to listen to a pogues album to know what you're getting. merely seeing the name 'the pogues' sets my inner monologue off diddly deeing. that said, rum sodomy, that's the best type of sodomy.

Not an Irish jig person. Redeemable tracks include London Girl, A Rainy Night in Soho, and Wild Cats of Kilkenny.

Top 3 Songs: 1 - London Girl (14) 2 - A Pair of Brown Eyes (5) 3 - The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn (1)

Step 1: go to Irish bar, drink enough Guinness to get blackout drunk; Step 2: start a bar fight, punch a dwarf in the face; Step 3: punch yourself in the face, lose a few teeth; Step 4: apologize by buying everyone a round of whiskey, perform karaoke singing Irish folk tunes with the entire bar; Step 6: become The Pogues. Stand out tracks: A Pair of Brown Eyes.

Pirate music

Not my type of music. Drunk pirate music :D

Not my vibes

What started out as charming and novel, grated on my nerves by the end. Apparently, I can only handle so much piccolo, fiddle and slurred folk tales.

It's quite enjoyable so long as your mood matches the buoyancy of this record. The trouble is it's hard to keep up if you are just listening to it alone in your room on your headphones. This record is meant for a much more social environment. The shagginess can be appealing as well as tiring.

nope. 2/5

While the music here definitely has an admirable passion and quality to it, it is more of a novelty than something I would listen to again.

Please... no more Pogues...

Schmaltz. Steeped in nostalgia ie a world that probably never existed. Still their right to do what they wish etc

No me gusto para nada. No es mi estilo de música

Long and hammering the same mail

I am not, and have no desire to be a pirate or sailor. Therefore this is not the music for me. Lots of personality, but just not a style I like.
