Reviews (page 3 of 13)
Blues classic. Love this record. Wish I could play slide guitar like Duane Allman.
Thoughts before listening: One of the greatest live albums of all time. This is 5-stars. Review: Bluesy, jazzy southern rock with killer guitar. Duane Allman is one of the greats on his instrument, especially for a slide player. So much energy in these songs that get pushed to the next level when the slide solos take over. The band would go on to be a huge influence on jambands and others that focus on their live shows over everything else, and this album was really the blueprint for that sound. Absolute classics in "Statesboro Blues", "Stormy Monday", "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed", and "Whipping Post". 5-stars.
Never heard this album before and I loved it - perfect music to chill to. Laid back blues rock.
legendary
It’s albums like this that make me proud to be from Georgia
All timer that has aged beautifully
Very good album
Super groovy! Loved it!
I looove the slide guitar! This must have been absolutely wild live. I don't prefer listening to live albums but this one was mixed well and I didn't hear the distracting crowd noise too much. And the talent (esp on the guitar) is on another level. Very "American" sound.
Absolute staple live album, Allman Brothers are iconic
Awesome!
Listened to this quite a few times and I really enjoyed it. In the least disrespectful way possible this is fantastic background music and really enjoyed having this on whilst I worked. Due to that I couldn't tell you the names of any songs but this album is being saved for sure.
Me ha gustado este tipo de música entre rock and roll y rhythm and blues. Muy buen directo.
5 out of 5 Blues badassery right here, and this is up my alley. Very awesome live album, good guitar jams, overall excellent performance. 5/5
Super live Album mit gutem Southern Rock
Arguably, perhaps the best live album ever. No duds or throw-aways
Vintage, excellent!
One of the first great, live rock albums and one of the best live albums of all time. The progenitor of Southern Rock as a genre. I'm sure this album inspired everybody from Lynyrd Skynyd, The Outlaws, Molly Hatchett up through Chris Stapleton, The Drive-by-Truckers and of course Gov't Mule. The sound isn't great given the production capabilities of the time, but the power of the performance has no trouble breaking through. While they continued without him for most of the band's long existence, it makes me wonder what else Duane Allman could have contributed.
One of the greatest live albums of all time. What an absolutely kick ass blues band. Their cover of One Way Out is a Classic, and the punch-in at the end of Whipping post is simply fantastic. My only regret is that we didn’t get this on a Friday given how long some of these tracks are.
Enjoyed it although the run times on the songs were a little long for my tastes.
Love it! I could listen to a couple of the songs on this album all day long.
Jam bands are a tricky subject. I’m someone who finds long songs to often be the highlights of a record. It’s where the artists often put the most concentration and creativity. But this is a live album. And so almost every song is a long one. That live format allows the band to go for as long as they want, and as long as their creativity can push them forward. And as a described, that limitless potential to just keep jamming is alive and well in these recordings. This is jam band blues at its most essential and perfected. It amazes me how well each of these members are able to read each other and keep playing so in sync without a single word being shared during the performance. They are actively reading each other’s minds and each other’s instruments. It is improvisation only seen in spaces occupied by jazz gods. And their skills are no joke. These guys are seriously next level. Duane is an incredible guitarist, and his brother Gregg is an equally brilliant organist, and has a powerful singing voice. Gives me super Hendrix vibes. My only complaints are that Stormy Monday feels a little lackluster compared to the rest of the album, and the last bit of Whipping Post drags on a bit longer than it should have, which is inevitable in a live jam album. But otherwise, this is fantastic, and if you are at all a fan of blues music, check this out. Rating: 9/10
Great Album
Very nice blues. A top listen if you like blues.
Happy memories. Bro John had this and maybe Kerry
Great live southern rock
Cool vom 1. Stück an. Sehr bluesig
Homer Dough. The chief of the tribe and a known warrior. Slide that neck o’ Dwaynie Boy
Pure Rock Blues. Enjoyed Stormy Monday. You don't love me - powerful. Hot 'Lanta - even better. Elizabeth Reed - some guitar solo! Whipping Post - loved it. This album is a definite 4 minimum... which means the full album needs to be listened to again, track by track. So, is it 4 or 5? Hmmm... 5 it is.
Funky, I like it. Puts you in a good mood. Relaxed.
Great live album!
It's not really my thing, but there's no denying that it's a classic.
Bands that have stretched out long jams are not everyone's favorite and I understand that. I don't love stretched out songs and the fact I'm not totally in the mood for a 13 minute song is what prevents me from continuously listening to this album. Overall, a great album that needs to be heard over the Allman Brothers studio work, even if the studio work contains so many of their "other" hits. This is not white man's blues. Listening to what the Allman Brothers are doing here is completely different from what Eric Clapton was doing. A must-listen for me.
Wow not a band I considered in the Jam genre but man this album jams.
So many great rambling tunes. It's all different and yet, also the same. But it all flows and works so nicely together.
INCREDIBLE
Love it
straight up jams that still hold up. set the stage for the scene
That slapped hard.
Freaking awesome!!!
I've heard this so much from a flatmate blasting it way too loud but hearing through headphones this was fucking awesome, like I knew it was good but the jamminess of it is just so much fun
Very enjoyable
5/5- One of my all-time favorites. That Stormy Monday is one of my favorite songs of all time and can put me in a fugue state.
Jammin’
Awesome instrumental, first time listener.
Best song - Statesboro Blues
I love it, probably not for everyone though!
Love me some Allman Brothers Band, and especially love me a good live album. Overall a very good jam session from a top tier jam band: no standouts, but no complaints.
Doesn't get much better than this, peak Duane Allman. Classic blues, had a stank face going for all 78 minutes.
4.5
One of the best displays of what the Blues is, this performance is a must listen for those who are interested for the genre, and it is. Nothing more need to be said, absolutely amazing.
5. This live album is one of the best of all time. The first song's rift is amazing as well. Overall, it is a great mix of genres that work and you can tell that the band have honed their craft. They were ahead of their time
One of my all-time favorite albums. I’ve listened to it hundreds of times over the years. Glad to see that it was the first recommendation in the group.
Classic live album from a classic band
I could listen to this 24/7
The first two tracks are structured like actual individual songs, but the lyrics don't work that well. The rest of the album features longer, mostly instrumental tracks that consist of slowly developing variations on a central musical theme. It's kind of like prog but in a more blues rock style, which I thought was fun.
This was great, I could listen to it all day. Allman Brothers at their finest.
Loved this.
Proto jam band is good.
My favorite Southern Rock band. This Live album did not disappoint.
The gold standard of live recordings. Guys in their mid 20 sounding like well seasoned blues men. I listen to It at least once a month.
Along with Live/Dead this is the best live album there is, capturing the red-hot Allman Brothers giving birth to the jamband. Duane Allman is unstoppable on slide guitar - the phrasing, the rough-fuzzy tone that becomes crystaline as he climbs the neck, the electrifying runs and perfect fills between his brother's lines. Dickey Betts isn't bad either, adding major-key country melodies and jazz sensibilities that bring a joyful climax the blues jams. Gregg Allman's singing is deep and corny and moving; the drummers can't stop and Berry Oakley's bass holds it all together. The only thing wrong with this album is that it isn't the deluxe edition, where Whipping Post fades and those first few gentle notes of Mountain Jam kick emerge. Blues rock should have stopped after this really as what's the point, but don't hold the millions of tiresome blues-dads that followed them against the Allman Brothers, this is an all-timer.
Favorite song: Stormy Monday
Good live blues album. Enjoyable listen
This album just doesn’t stop! One of the best live albums ever.
Great Album! 5 stars
A live album that's particularly listenable. Enormously talented musicians at the height of their powers. Fantastic. It sure sounds like blues, but this is actually a jazz album, isn't it?
Arguably the greatest live album of all time. I've owned a copy of this for a long time and never tire of listening to it. One of the best examples of having a lot of genres(Blues, Jazz, Soul, Rock)all rolled into one and played by a group of amazing musicians at the peak of their power.
Great road trip music
A live album that shows that sometimes less (songs) is more (extended jams)!
Absolutely what a live album should be and there isn't a better version of Whipping Post anywhere.
One of my favorite albums that I've owned for like 20 years. What do you think?
Banger! One of my fav from the almans since way back in the day
An amazing look into what is essentially an extended jam session from some of the best to ever do it. Some may criticize for it's long play time but I'm glad they let the songs breath and live for a while. Just some artists living through the music in 78 minutes. The extended versions are worth a look as well.
Fantastic album! I am a massive fan of the Duane Allman era and also his work with Clapton. Essential listening for anyone who loves Blues guitar and solos.
best live rock band, best live rock album
I went into this project thinking I wasn’t into blues or jam bands. Now 600+ songs later I’m totally into this bluesy jam band album. These songs did go on and on but I loved what was happening. I feel one step closer to going to Phish concerts…
Never heard of them, but a brilliant album full of guitar riffs
Top rockin'
Just immense blues rock, obviously. One of the all time greats. Hard to believe they were all so damn young. I appreciate that unlike a certain dirigible-themed blues rock band, they want you to know where the music came from.
One of the best live albums I've ever heard, hearing Duane Allman in top form is pure bliss.
Brilliant
Vijf kwartier dampende blues, het kon slechter. Wat deze muziek tijdloos maakt, is een moeilijke vraag. Kennelijk het ruw randje, het spontane, en natuurlijk het superieure spel van de heren.
Old time blues-rock. Espectacular.
Duh
This album is incredible I love everything about it. Unfortunately was probably the peak of Allman Bros for me. Stormy Monday just reminds me of those boner pill commercials which is also unfortunate.
Hells yes. 5 stars.
This is one of the greatest live albums ever. And I like it a lot. But I discovered that you need to be in the mood for this.
already listened 10/10
Loved this one
What more could you ever want, really
Ripping
My favorite forever.
Already listened, second favorite of all man brothers
What a performance. The best live album ever made – breathtaking solos, convincing blues, easy-groovin' boogies. And though the firepower is massive, the playing is deft and fluid, even as it chugs. There's even a sweetness to it. Listen on a long drive on an open road. Every cut appeals, but one's personal highlights are "You Don't Love Me," and "HotLanta" and "In Memory" and the closer – they just go on and on, getting more amazing along the way. The band's inner dramas became an embarrassment later on but what a testament to this. No Eat a Peach is a total WTF? Perhaps the most egregious exclusion from this list, Eat a Peach is better than easily half of the other listees and, one reckons, all nine – 9!?!?!?!? – Bowie records and all three Tim Buckley records. One can't imagine editors disqualified it because it included some live cuts from Fillmore East. Anti-Southern bias more likely.
Really great jam band
The Fillmore East is one of those legendary venues that is, in itself, a member of any band that walks onto its stage. There's an undeniable energy to the place that has a measurable effect on audience and band alike. While I'm not a big fan of Allman Brothers in general, this album is evidence of that Fillmore effect. The brothers rip out some damn fine electric blues that just pulses with a powerful energy and you can hear it in the audience's response. It's a really great blues jam record and a supremely good live album. Full marks.
Amazing live album from an amazing jam band.
Easily a top 5 album of all time for me
Just excellent
Classic!
having not been born for several decades after this album came out, i discovered through means in the internet i don't exactly recall. what i do recall is that i had this on repeat for quite a while. excellent album.
One of the best Live albums ever. Shows the band with all of their muscle.
Classic blues jams
Really enjoyed this. Need to add more Allman to my rotation
What a great performance, but also a real commitment of an album. It’s many of best songs the Allmanns had recorded to that point, with a few gems that were to be released on the next album, Eat a Peach. Epic performances of Whipping Post and Mountain Jam. Stellar performances by all the members of the band. While I was thrilled by Duane and Dickey as their guitars soared, and moved by the incredible soulfulness of Greg’s singing, I had to stop many times and shake my head at the incredible groove that the rhythm section maintained without pause for over two hours. Just incredible feel and stamina! Great album, and a true classic. On the constructive criticism side, I did think that You Don’t Love Me was unnecessarily long, although the Duane jam in the middle did seem like a little wave to Jimmy Page, like, “Hey man! I can do that too!”
Trop bon, un classique pour moi, ecoute de dizaine de fois. 5
Statesboro Blues- 8.5/10 Done Somebody Wrong- 8/10 Stormy Monday- 9/10 You Don't Love Me- 9.5/10 Hot 'Lanta- 8/10 In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed- 9/10 Whipping Post- 8/10 AT Filmore East- 8.5/10
I listened to the tracks, and so did my neighbour (although he doesn't get much choice in the matter)! This is one of my favourite alums of it's kind. It's by-far the best live album I've ever heard. From beginning to end, it's absolute audio pleasure. Even though I didn't own the album - I now intend to buy it as soon as I'm able.
Mõnus dadrock
heard the two-hour deluxe edition it blew my mind how great those performances were - 10/10
Very great sound for a live album.
Saggy tits and swinging balls Passed out in my overalls A blazing row, a crumpled can, a rusty nail, a faded tan My bloodshot eyes, her broken wrist A ray of sunlight in the mist The hateful looks, the broken smiles, and all I'm thinking all the time... is... You fuckin' cunt, I hate your guts Go away, you filthy slut Your fanny stinks, your arse is fat But, I still love you, that's a fact RIP Pauline.
Perfection
Listening to this album I had this sense of I'd heard it before... and looking into my last.fm history I indeed had. I had completely forgotten I listened to this album a fair number of times almost a decade ago. It all came flooding back about how I loved this album and I'm not quite sure why it went out of rotation. This is great live blues rock jamming. The guitar tones just wail in a perfect way. Add in the extended jams and this what I want out of a live album.
This was THE live album which makes every other seem little in comparison. Absolutely loved it
It is a breathtakinglsy good live album. Duane Allman is a legend.
All about the live jams with the Allmans, good stuff. One Way Out is one of their best songs IMO, but what really rocks on here is this version of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.
Muito bom o álbum! Perfeito pra ouvir e relaxar. Gostei muito! Melhor música: Stormy Monday
"At Fillmore East" is the Allman Brothers Band's first live and third overall album. I like their quote that they do not consider themselves a jam band but a band that jams. And jam, they do indeed on this. This was recorded over two nights at the Fillmore East in NYC. The original release was a double album containing seven songs with two songs, "You Don't Love Me" and "Whipping Post" each with a dedicated side all to themselves. Obviously, most these songs are extended to some extent with the Brothers putting on quite the jam especially Duane Allman and Dickie Betts on guitar. This album is also one of those selected for preservation in the Library of Congress for its cultural, historical or aesthetically importance by the National Recording Registry. These songs all have some level of guitar, drum, organ or bass solos to them. Their music contains aspects of blues, jazz and rock, a lot of times within the same song. "Stormy Monday" has a bluesy start with aspects of jazz and the highlight for me being the guitar solos of Betts and Allman. The 13-minute "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" has a bass solo, an organ solo and of a mind-blowing guitar solo at the end. Good use of two drummers. And, of course, the 23-minute "Whipping Post" ends the album with a chaotic finish highlighting every instrument they have. If you like hearing a rockin band jam with one of the best guitarist ever in Duane Allman, this is your album.
Certainly one of the greatest live albums in rock history. Duane Allman’s slide guitar is so unearthly good and the whole band is just in sync, the crowd wholly on their wavelength. A masterpiece.
Jam sensacional
got that great 70s blues rock vibe with electric guitar, raspy voices, makes you do the stank face. vibes. couple long ass jazz riffing instrumental songs.
Good
One of my favorites. Classic live performance. Liz Reed, whippin post brings the 🔥
Loved this, especially its more psychedelic odysseys, which reminded me of Circle and Pharaoh Overlord.
One of my favorite live albums.
A masterpiece. Probably the best live album of all times.. In the top 3 for sure.. Whipping post is epic
Es como rock urbano pero afinado y bien tocado. Diez estrellas.
Excellent live album
So much jams. All the jams. Jammy jam jams
Great experience! Electrifying!
5.5….one of MY top ten albums…cut my teeth in great music with this album….had older siblings that were a great influence, but discovered this one on my own…saw then once with Duane( my 1st concert) and 3 times after that….just can’t say enough about album and group
Raw and thumping rock n roll blues and southern.
If there is a Mount Rushmore for live albums (and I'm assuming that there is), At Fillmore East by The Allman Brothers Band should very well be in it. The second half of the album is among the most fiery and magnetic moments in not just rock, but music, history. No wonder this shot up the charts rapidly unlike their previous efforts. Favorites: Hot 'Lanta, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Whipping Post.
Blues! Such a good album!
LOVE IT
Awesome love album. The band talks about how they didn't have a lot of commercial success with their studio albums, mostly having to do with the fact that they felt constrained by the limits of studio recording (3:20 song times). So apparent listening to this album - the band is meant for live music! Awesome riffs and great solos throughout
The Zeus in the "greatest live albums of all time" pantheon
Almost gave it four stars for a less than ideal tracklist (a good balance of hits/jams, even for a legendary jam band like this, is ideal for a mass released album). But, the extended edition easily solves this problem. Legendary playing from a legendary band, live Duane easily earns it 5 stars
Been a few times in my life where I've just ended up in a room with someone just jamming hard on a guitar with no end in sight, this album brought me back to those places. Plus, can't go wrong with a bit of blues. Solid 5/5, music so chill and freeflowing I could fall asleep, but I wouldn't want to.
Hot Blues JAMS!!!!!!
love the energy and musicianship combined
Guidando di notte attorno a Milano
spacca
This was a good one 😀
Perfect southern rock live album of 1971! It's The Allman Brothers Band's third album - artistic and commercial breakthrough and also the most successful of band's discography. A great mix of blues and jazz improvisations. Must be listened!
5 Gran álbum para comenzar un viaje entre la emoción y la tranquilidad. Además es un gran paso para empezar a escuchar canciones de larga duración con la emoción de inicio a fin.
Classic.
Вау. Импровизация, гитары, семидесятые - идеально.11/10
An absolute classic. I've listened to this 100x.
It's great!
great
Favourite song is Hot ‘Lanta. Album Rating: 5/5 Track by track 1/7 : statesboro blues : 4/5 Great song But to short 2/7 does somebody wrong : 4/5 See above 3/7 Stormy Monday : 4/5 Here’s are first longer track and it’s great 4/7 You Don’t Love Me : 2nd favourite track on the album and it’s a great jam 5/5 5/7 Hot ‘Lanta : My favourite track 5/5 6/7 In Memory of Elizabeth Reed Best jam on the album 5/5 7/7 whipping post : 4/5 Super long and good! This review is by coolistaken and I’m out
Some good ass blues rock. The double drummers holds up super well live, too. The jams are really where this album soars.
Great 90 minutes of rock blues.
Un buen álbum de blues. Ganas de haber estado allí en vivo y en directo
It was a great listen, especially loved the last track - so much talent!
All time top 3 album for mw
My favorite live album
One of the best live albums I've heard. Good ol sourthern blues.
Exceptional.
Old time blues-rock. Espectacular.
These guys hold a solo longer than carbonite, and they work better in the songs than normal dabblers. Really good
This one was one the first albums I listened to with my friends in HS. We spent 2 summers hitting record stores. This album reminds me of that couple of summers.
Yes. Not many are going to get five star but this does
Great playing. Long jams with Enthusiastic blues and Duane is missed.
Classic southern rock. Great album
An exceptional snapshot in time of a band that had much better songs to come.
improvisationS MANEIRO
это ж классика блюза и слайд-гитары!
Jazz, blues e rock. Perfeito
top notch
Excellent album. Please play albums like this
Que álbum fenomenal. Rock, blues, soul, swing.... fantástico
Ever listen to blues? Ever listen to blues... high
Starts off bluesy, dabbles in psych rock by the end. Great guitar, loved the baseline at points. Accidentally listened side 1, 4, 2, 3. Very jam band, hearing some Goose. Santana and them played together at one point? Makes sense.
1 hour and 18 minutes of pure guitar play heaven
Southern rock/jazz/blues! Let's go. Fuck I love me some good blues riffs! Damn the Stormy Monday intro is so smooth! Yeah man, this song is so bad ass! Cant help but start dancing a bit to You Don't Love Me. Fuck man, I need to get us an electric guitar!
These guys can jam, there’s no doubt. It’s no Sweet Melissa though. I’ll give them a five for skill and execution minus one because it’s not my jam.
Fun
sehr bluesig, sehr gut gespielt!
I was not familiar with your game allman bros. This was a great listen. Had some long drwan out groovey jams. Little more bluesy than a dead record (at least to me). Saved a handful of tracks from this album. Going to be coming back to this forsure
First off I’ll say I’m surprised none of their studio projects made the list (but someone like Morrissey has three solo albums🤔). But this is a classic jam band live album of some blue eyed southern soul. The Allman Bros were one of the first classic rock bands I got into; the slide guitar by Duane and Gregg’s vocals really hooked me. Sure this album is far from polished, as well as on the longer side (mountain jam alone is a half hour), but I have so much nostalgia listening to this which in my opinion is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. Plus, this is better than majority of the blues coming out of England at the time. Still too long, raw and too much jamming to give it 5, but 4 stars here is perfect.
Made me wanna drink a cold sixer by the river
Great background music for working. Great musicianship and especially enjoyed two drummers
Wow. Though as Julia pointed out - for those of us who don't listen to The Blues very often, it's hard to distinguish different artists. So maybe that's a 'wow' for The Blues.
Im liking this so much more than expected. Storm on Monday is great
In memory of elizabeth reed is echt fantastisch. Ik word er wel heel blij van. Tikt bijna de 5 wel aan denk ik. Ik vind het wel een van de leukste blues achtige albums tot nu toe.
hrtsfgrthrth
Classic rock/blues jams. It’s legendary, it’s lengthy and it’s live
As a drummer I’m not sure how I felt about the two drummers thing. I found it a bit distracting. I thought there fusion part of the show was more interesting than the blues part. But maybe I’m just a bit over blues? Definitely a great album!
Shook a lot of ass to this
Sometimes I’d come up for air and be like “they’re still going?” or “another false finish before we hit the fourth stage of the jam without ending the song?”, but ultimately it’s an album you’re just supposed to swim in so you gotta get past coming up for air and dive back into the pool of extended blues rock improvisation and jamming and soak it in. Band’s great, production’s really clean for a live album, just gotta get 76 minutes of time free to chill.
Didn't know what to expect but this was a delightful listen. It's more instrumental and jamming, reminds me of those impromptu jazz sessions. It's a good album to put on as background noise, has some groovy stuff there. I enjoyed it to my surprise. Didn't bother with the deluxe version though for the standard edition of the album is quite long on its own despite having 7 tracks.
Another band I barely knew anything about before. At first it just sounded like a standard blues rock band. After a few tracks I thought I knew what made their sound distinct and that’s when I got hit with the first long jamming track. I never really got into jam bands and now I can see why. There were a lot of great sections in those 20 minute tracks. But after about 7 minutes I’m ready to move on. Toward the end of “Whipping Post” they do a riff of “London Bridge is Falling Down” and that’s where I knew they were messing with us. I now appreciate guitar solos much more. They can accomplish the same improvisational showcase without overstaying their welcome. Sometimes leas is more. But I have to comment on this coincidence and contrast: the album I got right before this also features blues rock tracks and released in the same year. But it was so soulless and selfish and bland compared to this one. So while this sort of “director’s cut” version of this band’s music isn’t for me, I at least can say it’s still high quality stuff.
So much more credible than I first thought. I must admit I judged this hard at first. Seemed like another set of ordinary white dudes from the 60s (okay early 70s) appropriating the blues and not really adding anything interesting. I love the scale though. Despite it being quite locked into that electric blues style, there is a lot of cool musicianship and genuinely expressive ideas.
Great guitar riffs and groove. Didn't notice a "boring/uninterested" part. Would listen again
Great vibes. My kind of music, just super cool and fun
groovy, i like it
3 + 1 for meeting notability guidelines.
Very groovy, this was a good one
Honestly I really fucked with this album. I enjoyed the live-ness of the album and just listening to the instruments. Not sure if they're jazz or rock but it was fun. Why they started playing Joy to the World at the end of their first 20 min song idk. Last couple of songs were really boring and long but not bad. 4/5
Who doesnt like the blues?
Excellent musicianship redefining what blues can sound like
This is a supreme jam style live album. Definitely one of the best I’ve heard and technically it’s excellent. It ebbs and flows but mostly at a high tempo. It’s not really my style as I prefer tighter compositions or blues style guitar that has more slow, emotive and powerful sections for emphasis where this is rarely getting below 3rd or 4th gear. But it’s hard to deny the talent on show and it would have been an epic live performance to sit in on. Probably a high 3 on enjoyment alone but it feels like a significant recording and technically there’s a lot to like, so felt the 4 was deserved.
This is great example of when a live album really works. I'd not listened to The AB before but I immediately wished I was at one of these gigs. Listening to a band play their songs and then just have a general blues jam is live music at its best. It was all well executed, if fairly generic, blues rock. In parts, the album is a bit rambling through the extended improv sections but I was listening on a long drive and could just surrender to it with any repetition feeling appropriate. Good find.
Blues Hammer from Ghost World without being frat boys.
A this was a great live album. It’s all they’re familiar hits some 25 minutes longer than you would normally hear them but awesome to listen to. I won’t say too much more than that.
Great jams
In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, också mycket bra. Gillar detta mycket!!
Having never listened to the Allman brothers before, I found this album quite enjoyable. Some of the tunes are pretty funky, there's a lot of blues going on. Is it an album to listen to before you die? Probably not, but still worth a lesson
Phenomenal live album. It really showcases the band at its finest while jamming to some of their best tunes. It's great background listening.
I have to be in the right mood for jam band stuff, and I was in that right mood for this album.
good live album, perfect for locking into work
AWESOME. Classic Blues Rock at its finest.
So far my favourite rock album. The instrumentals are beautiful, especially the guitar riffs. Beautifully produced album. Some of the best guitar solos I have heard, especially in the song You don't love me. This album made me realise that sometimes you don't even need vocals, instruments can sing too, case in point Hot Lanta. Favourite song in the album - Whipping Post No. of favourited songs - 4/7 Rating - 4/5
lot's of great guitar solo's
I really enjoyed it. Much more than I expected
What a sexy live band.
Nothing has changed in that I don't prefer live albums, but this one was pretty good. They really jam out on this. There were certainly parts where it dragged on a little long, but those guys were having fun up there.
Incredible rock from a band who just seem to know where each other is going at any given moment.
4/5 Best Song: In Memory of Elizabeth Reed Worst Song: Stormy Monday Weirdest Song: You Don't Love Me Honorable Mention: Whipping Post Epic live album from Allman Brothers. Great guitar solos and instrumentation throughout. Starts a little slow but really kicks off at You Don't Love Me and only gets better from there.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would! Cool vibes, wel executed and interesting enough compositions
I don't think I would pick it on my own to listen to, but goddamn if this wasn't fucking great.
I like driving rock and roll with electric guitars, and I also like long dynamic jazz pieces that are alternately mesmerizing and arresting, so this definitely works for me. 4/5. Sure, this probably fits on a hugely long list of must listen music. Maybe on mine.
Nice album. Lot of good moments.
y se quejaban porque taylor tiene una canción de 10 minutos
This is an absurd amount of noodling, and most times I find that really annoying. This was not one of those times. Wish I'd been invited to this party.
solowki sa mega smieszne, i tez zajebista jakosc produkcji jak na to ze na zywo nagrywane i w 1971 r.
Legends. Masters. Whatever you want to label this band they are rock, blues, messiahs. So many people owe so much to bands like this. This is a live album which normally makes me cringe, but this one works
Always enjoyed this one!
I got on board the ABB train late in life, and even well after loving the Dead and other jam bands for a couple decades or more. But this album is just an excellent summary of all that there is to love about ABB. Strong 4+, maybe a 5.
The band is so cool but the album 'at fillmore east' is not the best album to them. Theres a album named where it all negins is better :^)
Despite the long jams it was still enjoyable.
Awesome !!!
great live album with fun improv
Second day in a row of live albums from Fillmore (had quicksilver messenger service yesterday). Both are testaments to the power and vitality of live rock music of the period. They capture something the studio albums never can: the interplay and groove of a tight group of musicians. Live at Fillmore starts out kinda lame with the old school blues of ”statesboro blues”. But the album really picks up steam and ”Hot ’Lanta” and ”In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” are two absolute stunners. Tight, groovy, explosive aural beauty.
folk rock is such a fun genre I quite enjoyed ‘Stateboro Blues’ ‘Stormy Monday’ is such a good love rendition but my favourite of the Live At Fillmore pieces were ‘Done Somebody Wrong’ and ‘Whipping Post’. This love album further solidified my interest in Blues rock and folk. Rating: 4/5 GEMV (10.05.2026)
Pretty good live album, especially the blues material. Love to hear a great band jamming!
A first live album on this journey- which I’m sure if you were at the concert was a hell of an evening. I’m not entirely sure what I’ve listened to though- rock, blues, jazz, country? I guess a mixture of all 4. Vocally I wasn’t overly won over however the music itself never felt repetitive and despite a couple of the tracks been loooong.. it flowed well and the ‘jamming’ sessions were warmly recieved by my ears. Unfortunately however due to the vocals not being to my taste and the fact I actually wasn’t in the room for the concert I wasn’t fully sold on the album. For that I’m going to give it an overall 8/10 Best song- ‘in memories of Elizabeth Reed’ Worst track- ‘done somebody wrong’
Allman Bros It kind of all became one long jam. An enjoyable jam, but a jam. Standouts for me were the drums/guitar duel of You Don't Love Me, and the twin guitar of Hot Lanta. Bonus point for using two drummers. Always love a duel drum attack 😂 Best Track - Hot Lanta Worst Track - Stormy Monday (which I know everyone calls a classic but...) 7.5/10
Was fun and relaxing. It's not a lot that I see an album with songs going over 10 minutes, though. woooah
Great jam album, and a great group! Rating: 8/10 Favorite Songs: Statesboro Blues, Whipping Post
I’ve heard this before. I don’t own it but it’s in my dad’s collection, so I heard this a lot growing up. Allman Brothers is one of the few southern rock bands I really like, so I think it’s because of the jamming. Except I’m not a huge fan of jam bands, so I guess it’s because the jams are not aimless. They got a set start, a general direction, and end at the right time; they got a verb to them, if that makes sense. And this record is filled with those jams.
My dad used to play some Allman Brothers, as well as I've come across some of these tracks in my work. "Statesboro Blues" is a great opening track, with some great blues-rock vocals & guitar tone. "Done Somebody Wrong" another solid blues rock entry. Clean playing, vocal delivery is solid. I like that they call out at the start of "Stormy Monday" that it's a T-Bone Walker song. I think it's really important to understand that Blues, and by extension Blues-Rock & Rock n' Roll are built upon the foundations of these African American artists. While maybe it didn't stick with the crowd at the live show, it's still great to see Artists acknowledge Artists, something that wasn't always done at this time. Fantastic original song, and this version does a great job to honor it. "You Don't Love Me" again, solid blues rock. Vocals are fine, guitar work is great. I like how up beat and bouncy this one while we get to hear those humbuckers rip. Certainly a lengthier track that really start's to further emphasize the jammyness of this album. I do think the track does ramble on quite a bit with it clocking in at a slightly over 19 minute listen time. In contrast to my prior listen of Jimi Hendrix's *Electric Ladyland* where I made note of the length of some tracks, but simultaneously how much Hendrix would seemingly introduce and remove different licks & solos within them— Duane Allman's playing here get's a little too samey for my taste. It's not to the degree where I feel like I'm just listening to a dude noodle on, there's quality & thought there. It's just some licks overstay their welcome, and last a little too long as the major theme with minimal change. Coming off "You Don't Love Me", "Hot 'Lanta" feels arguably almost too short. It feels like a step away from that blues-rock tone thusfar, and further into a more jazz-like track which I find super interesting. It's a breath of fresh air coming into side C— but in some ways it feels underdeveloped and unexplored when you consider the lengthy tracks that sandwhich it between side B, and the rest of side C & D. "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" is a return to some more blues rock, and man does the guitar solo absolutely bang in this one. "Whipping Post" is quite the way to wrap up the album. Definitely more of the same, but in a saving-the-best-for-last kind of way. I think this was some of the best Jam-Band style playing & guitar work by Duane Allman across the album. Across the album, I really dig the extended, jam-band, almost jazzy kind of versions of songs. In many ways, the album feels like a precursor to not only many Southern Blues-Rock artists, but Jam Bands to follow. Favorite Track: "Whipping Post"
A band that jams
This is pretty solid but standard bluesy jams and then you get to Whipping Post and it blows the rest of the album completely out of the water. It’s worth a listen just for Whipping Post
Statesboro Blues (Live At Fillmore East, March 13, 1971) - Suuuuuper cool so far. Reminds me of a blues bar I visited once. Done Somebody Wrong (Live At The Fillmore East, March 1971) - Funky vibe. fun. sort of slow. Stormy Monday (Live At Fillmore East, March 13, 1971) - I stopped paying attention to each song. Whoops. Good! great to have in the background.
A fantastic live blues-rock record.
Love this live album. Duane, man
Great Live Album.
This version of Elizabeth Reed has been part of my consciousness for so long. Love it. This album always delivers.
Must have been a great show
Aastast 1971 üks algupäraseid, aga ikkagi väga suure iseloomuga blues rock esinemisi. Pikad soolod, pikad lood, hinge siin on. Laivis kindlasti kuulaks veel, kuigi väga meeldejäävaid bängereid otseselt polnud. 3.8/5
An incredible live album from a band that is known for its live shows. Perhaps the best version of "Statesboro Blues" Highlights: "Statesboro Blues", "Stormy Monday" and "Midnight Rider"
Great album of young Allman Brothers band. Great jam album. Classic blues
Genuinely enjoyed this
Loved this, just a great live album by a great band.
I've heard that this is one of the greatest live albums ever made. I don't think that's quite true, but I could be wrong here. It's essentially a standard 70s blues-rock album played live with a handful of the songs being insanely long jam sessions. It's a good album, even though the songs are basic and the lyrics even more so. The album is entirely carried by the musicianship; every soloist is clearly good at their instrument. That said, the extended songs are mostly pointless and could have stayed a normal length. Therefore, this is not the greatest live album ever made like some say it is. It's just a good concert recording that showcases the talents of the band members.
Incredibly long but very good jams, absolute classic rock
8.5 / 10
A pretty cool live blues album. Teenage me would have absolutely loved this. For 40-year old me, it was probably just a 4*. Super talented musician and some cool segments in the epic jams, but I just don't get as excited about 20 minute guitar solos as I used to.
I had forgotten how good this record is!! All man Brothers play blues songs just out of this world!!!
I mean they really do go for it. Jam city baby. Time capsule and incredible musicianship on display.
Great space out music
My first impression was that this album is one of those live albums filled with blues jamming. I have to admit that the Allman brothers seems to even do that in a way that i don't totally hate. And as we go further to side B and onwards the band's got other tricks in their sleeves, with jazzy and proggy elements that really make me appreciate this much more than the first bars of the firsts songs anticipated. Will have to spin it again couple of times just for fun!
The All Man Brothers Band, it don’t get more macho than that! Kinda surprised they aren’t sitting on Harleys in every picture. Anyways, another in the long list of bands I couldn’t afford to get into during my pre-streaming youth, but I always meant to. They absolutely rip, and my guitar playing would have benefited greatly from listening to this record repetitively as an early teen. I’ll see if doing it now will work the same way. Let’s hope.
Excellent groove
Wow, what an amazing live album! This record shows how underrated The Allman Brothers were as a jam band. These improvised guitar solos and drum beats are timeless. Sure, some of the jams falter off and lose some steam from time to time. But that doesn’t waver my love and nostalgia I have for this band. Growing up, my dad would play this album and countless other Allman Brother records on car rides to school. It’s safe to say my dad has great taste and set the bar high for music I listen to every day. Thanks dad
Didn't do me wrong.
I definitely like this album more than the last one I got. I'm using not a super huge fan of blues kind of music, so this surprised me. I t sounds like the kind of music my dad would put on the car, and the kind of concert he'd drag me to "for the experience", so in that way this album feels "homey" The guitar solos are quite impressive, although they do happen quite a lot so sometimes its a bit repetitive. But overall, it was enjoyable. and whoever was absolutely shredding on that harmonica, go you man, that's badass.
I like the Allman Brothers - and have 16 songs liked by them on Spotify. I only have 1 song liked from this specific album - "Whipping Post" - which I just noticed is the longest song on this one at 23 minutes. Most of my liked songs are from their studio albums - with 9 of them from the album called Eat a Peach (which is a perfect album with no skips) - which also has 3 live songs on it that I like. I will add that, in general, live albums usually aren't my favorite. I love live music in person, but don't think albums usually capture what makes it so good. And I I think double albums are usually full of lots of filler. So, whenever I see a live double album I get a little worried. Thoughts after listening 3 times ... I didn't really get into the first 2 songs - "Statesboro Blues" and "Done Somebody Wrong". "Stormy Monday" - digging the slower, more hypnotic, pace of this song. The organ part really kicks it up a notch. "You Don't Love Me" - good. Oh yeah, I've heard "Hot 'Lanta" before and really like it. I already have "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" liked from the studio version - and the live version is also really good - and probably even better with the cool, long extended jams. I know a lot of people comment on the twin lead guitars that the Allman Brothers use and clearly they are awesome at this - but I don't think the drumming gets enough love. They also have 2 drummers and what they are doing sounds very complex to me - that and the bass keep this all chugging along - plus the drum solos are fantastic. This is even harder to do in a live setting - so props to Butch Trucks and Jaimoe for crushing this. I also think the recording of this is great for a live album. You can hear everything really well and it doesn't get that "muddy" feel to it, nor the play too fast/slow or out of synch sound that many live albums get. Thanks Allman Brothers for proving me wrong about live double albums! Liked songs on Spotify: 5/7 NOTE: these 5 songs represent 89% of the minutes of this album - even though it's only 71% going by song count. Apparently I tend to like the longer jams the best Rating: 4/5
Fuck yeah some R’R
I love listening to music that makes you feel like you're in a basement half paying attention to the music and half covering your drink
Band: The Allman Brothers Band album summary: purely instrumental, very little vocals, tracks ranging from 5 minutes to 19 minutes. My favorite track is: In Memory of Elizabeth Reed "A 13-minute jazz-rock instrumental written by guitarist Dicky Betts. Complex chords, melancholic melody, and long solos. A masterpiece of the band." - I was stuck on it for 13 minutes while it was playing, and the instrumental was really cool.
Live blues rock. I was always going to like this. Probably slightly too long and jammy in places, and some of the tracks are covers, but good stuff nonetheless.
Does it get better than this? No, I don't think so. Fire. 4.75.
I can only describe this genre as “damn he’s just on stage and he’s slangin’ it”.
Strong 4
Really great music, but I don’t know that I like 20 minutes songs
Definitely should be on a list like this. Southern jazz blues rock. Tight band. Greg Allman has the perfect voice for this. Dickey Betts doesn't get enough credit. Some solos go on too long. Whipping Post showcases all of them.
Blues con aire de swamp rock. Estilo Creedence.
classic
Overall Rating - 4.42/5 (8.86/10). A Blues style jam band is a choice. A good one, in my mind. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is incredible. Whipping Post must be heard to be truly appreciated.
Definitive. Exemplary musicianship and production. Want to know a source of the jam band? Look no further. Elizabeth Reed and Whipping Post to close? Unbelievable.
Je pense pas que je réécouterai mais les solos de guitare à la Santana sont très stylés !! Pour une fois le format live est 100% justifié
This was a really solid album
It was very enjoyable and put me in a jolly mood
That's a pretty good live show dude. Obviously the Allman Brothers are gonna rip live, it's just nice to get confirmation of it.
Really enjoyed this.
3/1001 At Filmore East - The Allman Brothers Band (1971) Who knew a live album could be this good? I didn't want In Memory of Elizabeth Reed or Whipping Post to end, which says a lot for such long tracks. A live album that seems to capture a band at their best. Probably my favourite blues rock or blues rock-adjacent album to date. ★★★★½
Better than The Cashew Sisters.
Incredibly clean mix, especially for a live recording, and from 1971 at that! Lacking a little bit of low end, but every instrument and vocal is very clear. At times it's hard to believe it's a live recording but then the audience chimes in. Absolutely peak musicianship in "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" too. Overall quite a few songs lack structure and devolve into noodling, but it’s eminently listenable noodling by supremely talented artists.
A solid live album. I hadn't really heard much of them before but I enjoyed this. It was perhaps a bit too long given a lot of it started to sound the same, but I enjoyed it nonetheless
S tier guitar work. RIP Duane Allman
Makes me want to buy a motorcycle
Uff, excelente álbum en vivo. Un blues hermoso, unos músicos excelentes. Flasheas. 1 hr 18 min que se pasan disfrutando 100%. Le encantó. 7/10
The name Allman uttered around guitar players will illicit some sort of reaction. A lot of people recognize Gregg and Duane Allman as two of guitar's greatest players with Duane really leading the pack. A massive what-if exists considering how young Duane died. He was already a pro at slide guitar and masted blues riffs. [[At Fillmore East]] put them on the national map, really pushing their sound out to the masses. It is 6 hours of non-stop blues rock packed with great slide riffs and catchy songs.
