Reviews (page 5 of 13)

Very strong live album that is commonly recognized as one of the best of all time.

8/10 Favorite Tracks: *You Don't Love Me*, Whipping Post, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed Least Favorite: Statesboro Blues, Stormy Monday

Solid blue grass and rock

Amazing performance from one of history's best jam bands. This album has a razor sharp blues edge and a psychedelic twist reminiscent of the Dead. This is simply one of the GOAT live albums. Few have risen to this high level of excellence.

Well, that was cooler than I was expecting.

Two disc set but with some short sides. It's good Souther boogie rock with a strong LIVE feeling.

Nice jan session

Surprisingly good for a live blues album full of really loooong songs and guitar workouts. ‘Whipping Post’ is the one track that probably doesn’t quite justify its 20+ minute run time, but overall, for a blues album this was pretty good, and it’s a nice recording also. 3.5/5 but rounding up.

it took a couple of listens but I am a fan, yeah there's some unnecessary fret wanking but if you can put that to 1 side this is a great blues album

Usually i wouldn’t be in to these rock albums with songs that are 20 GODDAMN MINUTES long. but this one ate

Like the blues elements. Not so much the heavier guitar

These guys are badasses. Such a cool sound. Listened while I was biking and it was a perfect companion for that. Interesting and energetic.

Nice album indeed.

okay first song statesboro blues. sounds alright so far, love a good guitar. tbh I already like the Allman brothers band so I kinda knew what to expect anyway. this has a really good guitar sound I like it, and it's groovy ig that's the right word to say? like it's got a good beat and everything. um I'm really stupid and silly so even tho I can read the lyrics I can't understand them so it has no impact on my enjoyment of the song or I'd say something bout them. sorry done somebody wrong okay nice opening. sounds funky too I like it. they sure know how to make a nice little dancey tune and his voice is good for it too. is this what the 70s were like? YO love a nice guitar this guitar gives me harmonica vibes unless it's actually an harmonica and not just a guitar. I don't hear harmonicas much in my life so now I'm a bit hopeful. okay it was maybe an harmonica and now this is the guitar. they don't sing much, huh? but when you make music this good, who needs to sing all through it? the lyrics aren't on so I can't read them and I can't hear cause I'm so silly but it feels like one of those happy songs that are only happy cause you're one step away from losing your marbles. does that make sense. you're insane and it's catching up to you. okay cool that was a good song. stormy monday. are these guys perpetually sad or something? is this the truth behind the American dream? anyway, it's got a slow opening oh my god these guys need to be in a jazz bar or something bro I'm telling you. I thought the allman brothers band was just like rock folk or something but admittedly I am very poor at recognising genres. this is a slow song I like it though I can imagine a wee guy singing this and feeling like he's a cooler version of Elvis. okay I read through the lyrics bro is going through it. I completely get it. we love a good song that mentions the days of the weeks. those are some of my favourite songs. especially when they're a bit depressing BUT this one also is really jazzy and funky god it's so good to hear. and I love a song that mentions the lord and begging for mercy. oh my god this song is almost 9 minutes long. they were really going through it then huh. but it is beautiful. one of those songs it's nice to listen to while just not doing anything and experiencing the world and the song together. oh okay it kicked up a little bit. it's funny how guitar and drums and what have you can be just as emotional and informative as a voice with words is. oh hell yeah more of this. I love this. idk what instrument it is. piano. something like that. HARMONICA?? I still don't know. do these guys have harmonicas and do they play them? something to ponder. wind instruments are really cool actually. all instruments are. this is like maybe a dad song. imagine this playing and you're like 4 or 5 and you walk into the kitchen relatively early evening and your dad is there humming along to this in a little apron and his best dress shirt. and he sees you and he smiles and picks you up. you dance together with giggles and hollers. you'll never truly know your father. but you'll always love him and you'll always be his little angel. and this is a memory that neither of you will forget. just embraced in eachothers arms in your own little world. you don't love me. I have to come back to this.

A great live album. Early on in their career, so not as polished as they would eventually become. Some really ABB classics on here. 4.5/5 Will definitely listen again

I’ve always heard this was one of the greatest live albums ever recorded and have tried to get into it. The first track was always my stumbling block and I would inevitably not get past it. This time I persevered and made with each track, I could finally start to see the appeal. Once I got the last 3 tracks I got it- definitely not what I thought the allman brothers were. Also read the story of the album cover- band was grumpy with morning photo shoot with Jim Marshall. When Marshall went to reload camera, Duane saw his dealer walking by, jumped up, hit his stuff and then sat down before Marshall saw him. Everyone broke out laughing and you can see Duane hiding something in his hand. Great photo and great album.

This album was great background music, and a few songs really strong. A few great ones too, but overall an enjoyable listen. Captures time and place well.

Is it valid to call these guys my favorite jam band?

Should have been to the concert! A bit to long tracks but over all amazkng

The reasons I started this, is this kind of album. I never heard about it before. It's not something I would put on regularly but still I enjoyed listen to it and widen my music taste

this wasnt what i was expecting, but the shredding was solid, i could see myself listening to this again.

Two quotes from critics, one of the time (1971) and one from the early 2000s, captures the duality I felt while listening to it. The first quote said, "...it's ridiculous to preserve all these jams." While the second said, "...finest live rock...committed to vinyl...best blues rock band at its peak." And I agree with both somehow. Do I think the solo jams are something I want to listen to over and over? No. But I do think for a preservation of music of the time, it holds up.

Great band. Electric guitar mastery, great voice(s). Blues particularly live is not my favourite genre but they deliver! Sound much like Van Morrison (a compliment). 4/5

Enjoyable. Band were obviously having a blast

Love good instrumental,,

sometimes a bit repetitive, but still catchy and fun. Solid 7

Yeah, excellent. 4/5.

I would enjoy to go to this show, fun album Will I listen to again: 75%

Never was as enthralled as most people with the Almonds but I do respect the musicianship, the following and contributions of the band. So I'll rate it high.

While I prefer studio albums to live recordings, this one is one of the exceptions. It really good start to finish. Be forewarned that if you dislike long jam sessions in your live cuts, you probably will be triggered listening to this album.

A very good example of a band that could really play well together live (the other being The Grateful Dead I think). The actual tracks are irrelevant as their musicianship and contagious enthusiasm is everything. A special album.

K: 8/10: very listenable, great for cleaning/hosting, definitely long, mostly engaging C: 7/10 a lot of fun moments. I love the blues but jam bands are always more fun to play in than they are to listen to. Very great recording of a live album. Can see how influential it is. They really know their blues.

Great instrumental, but a bit too long for my liking

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure if this whole jam band scene is really my thing. I do love what I'm hearing, but most of it just kind of goes in one ear and out the other. Nothing really sticks with me all that much. But like I said, I did still really enjoy this, and maybe one day, I'll really get into it. Oh yeah, I also heard the 2003 version of this album, because it made the most sense to me. 8/10

Ah... The Allman Brothers... Great band... CLASSIC, ICONIC, canon! Yup. I am not a big fan of "classic rock" though... and this IS absolutely full stop hardcore sweaty faded tee-shirt classic as classic rock gets! Because this is totally iconic and totally a major major canonical band within the world of music and one can point a finger on the definition of classic rock and here they are, I must give this album, which IS great in its own rights, a lot of credit. It is well deserved. Just too bad I r e a l l y don't listen to "classic rock" much at all.

First time ever listening to. Amazing band, very tight. Proficient on their instruments. I like jam music but not quite a fan of the all musical jams, no real chorus or hooks like Grateful Dead has. Lots of bluesy rock.

Listened to this in the car on a road trip and half napped through most of it Kinda good for what it is

The Allman Brothers Band - At Fillmore East (1971) At Fillmore East captures the raw energy and sheer virtuosity of one of rock’s greatest bands at their peak. My connection to this album feels personal—during morning commutes with my young son earlier this year, we’d listen to music podcasts, one of which delved deep into the Allmans. That episode left him transfixed, and when this album came up, I couldn’t wait to dive in myself. From the opening notes, it’s clear why this record has stood the test of time. Duane Allman’s playing is mesmerizing—fluid, soulful, and utterly transformative. Together with Dickey Betts, the two guitarists weave intricate melodies and blistering solos with precision and passion. Meanwhile, Gregg Allman's smoky, soulful voice and earful organ playing are the emotional backbone of this record, grounding the band’s virtuosity with raw blues power. The rhythm section—Berry Oakley’s thundering bass and the twin drummers, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe—locks everything into a groove that feels both tight and untamed. Tracks like In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and Whipping Post are the album’s crown jewels, showcasing improvisation and interplay on a level that’s nothing short of stunning. However, for all its brilliance, At Fillmore East isn’t perfect. The extended jams, clocking in at 13, 19, and 23 minutes, occasionally drift into indulgence. Add in the deluxe editions with over six hours of music, and the sheer scale can be overwhelming for the casual listener. Even with these flaws, At Fillmore East is essential. It captures the Allman Brothers at their electrifying best, just months before Duane’s tragic passing. The album cemented their place in rock history and remains a benchmark for Southern rock and jam-band culture. For me, it’s a strong 4/5—a thrilling, soulful performance from a very special band. Did/Do I own this release? No. Does this release belong on the list? As far as live albums go, this is the boss. Would this release make my personal list? The Allman Brothers would certainly feature in my list, though I’m undecided on which album. Will I be listening to it again? Absolutely—this is a good time.

A landmark in southern rock, jam music, and rock in general. Just let the boys play! Like many great albums of the early 70's that stand out for being different, there was quite the fight to allow this album to happen, We are better off because of it. Though not as easy to listen to as a studio album, it incorporates the energy and passion the band had for the music and led to people changing their minds about how they would listen and experience going forward.

My heart sank a little when I saw an 80-minute blues album pop up, but this was a very nice surprise. The jams were awesome, with specific highlights being You Don't Love Me, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, and Whipping Post.

It took me a while to get through it but I enjoyed it while I was listening. Great guitar, although it feels like a jam band the music is really cohesive. Some of the tracks were really long. Rating: Had some difficulty deciding on whether a 3 or 4 rating but let's go 4.

Listened to the original album tracklist - not the supersized reissue. I think that was the right choice - 2 to 6 hours of jams is too much for a workday, but an hour 20 of jams is just right for cranking out some paperwork. These fellas could certainly jam.

Kan inte säga att jag lyssnat på dem tidigare, men är ju svag för bluesrockiga gitarrer och för mig är det här härlig lyssning rakt igenom utan att jag tröttnar. Kommer lyssna mer på dem.

4/5. Guitar solo: the album. Don't get me wrong, these are some very nice guitar solos. It can be a lot sometimes and I feel like each side can be taken in bursts. Listening all the way through front to back can be overwhelming but gosh darn do these solos rock. Hard to pick a favorite honestly because it does feel like one continuous guitar solo. Just great stuff though, will definitely listen to this one again. Best Song: In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Stormy Monday, Whipping Post

Reminded me of being in high school and listening to my brother's music. Have a much stronger appreciation for it now. I didn't remember it being as bluesy as it is.

Quite the bangin live album.

Great live album. Really showcases their talent.

The Allman Brothers have always been a "know the hits but don't often listen to them" kind of band for me. Much bluesy-er than I expected in a good way. Will definitely be giving this one another spin very soon.

Probably a cool show to be at

Super chill

Great blues, rock vibe, classic

Ordinarily I find long, jammy live albums quite boring but this was good, great performances and it didn't feel too overdone. Nice as a bit of relaxing background music (in the best way possible, not an insult). I'd give this more of a 3.5 but I'll round up to a 4 Highlights: Trouble No More, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, You Don't Love Me

Kick ass southern boogie. Who needs lyrics when you have 12 min guitar solos. The songs can run a little long. But overall still cool

lovely prog rock

I dug it

Reading about this album, I'm really glad the producers decided to cut down longer songs into more manageable jam sessions. I think it really helps the entire album overall. This is very good and only gets lost in itself once in a while.

7.5/10

Live jams

Rost-Rock

great music, great vibe. ironically was just at a restaurant fillmore east, based off the old venue

Everything that’s great about southern rock in a proto-jam format

Great music, nothing bad here. Not totally my style, but I still enjoyed it.

a bit long! but damn i love blues man

Surprised how much I enjoyed this one. Great blues rock sound from start to finish.

My prior album was Incubus. Incubus seriously need to spend some time listening to The Allman Brothers and unclench their butt cheeks a bit. Some easy jam band blues performed well. Listening via Spotify, it sounds a bit muffled/dull, which I think was limitations of an old live recording.

Had me dancing along for 80 minutes

A magnificent live album. Whipping Post rips.

i may not be a hillbilly but damn these boys sure can play

I enjoyed this. Good live rock album

These guys know how to jam. One of one of the better quality live albums I’ve heard.

I can see where this is good. Bluesy stuff that I could listen to again

4.3 1x

This was a really awesome album to have on as background noise while I worked. Super groovy. But I also know this is a live album. Seriously, how did people sit through the 25 minute jam sesh that closes the album without drugs?

Can’t make songs that are 22 minutes and 90% guitar solo nowadays due to Woke

very good

Gosto muito. Parece Pappo

This album is so good, makes me want to turn out the lights, lights some candles, get a good Whiskey and just listen.

So far on this journey I’ve learnt that the dude who wrote this list bloody loves a live album. Most of them have felt like a waste of time. Not this one. It’s great! Must have been an outrageous band to see live. 3.9

I've previously complained about both live albums and the amount of late 60s - early 70s prog on this list. Gonna contradict myself here though because I liked this one Great improvisation and there is variety across these jams, they have intensity when required, and room to breathe when it suits as well. Some of the guitar playing is incredible, this is a live album that captures music as an experience for the audience. Not my usual taste, but I don't make the rules. Only thing that prevents it being 5 is the length - 78 minutes of mostly guitar solos is a lot

Great album. Berry Oakley is amazing.

I wanted to say that I’m bored with weedly endless guitar solos and that southern rock was limp toxic masculinity. But I can’t. Not in regards to this album. I listened to it as a young musician and liked it, mainly because I was told to by Critics and Music Experts. Over time my tastes developed and I moved away from this type of thing. However listening to it again, it’s not as brash as I remember and there’s some damned fine playing and composition in it. Whipping post, an alleged favourite of Frank Zappa is a masterpiece. Yes it strains adhd with its length of tracks and launches a million mediocre jam bands. But like so much in music that’s not the fault nor the intention of the album. All in all, this belongs here. I suspect that some of us in our little group won’t like it. That’s ok. Their arguments are probably right. But I enjoyed this much more than I remembered. Points deducted for too long (though as Mozart allegedly said to the emperor, which notes do I remove?’) And a little bit of self indulgence. But still an album that wouldn’t hurt you to listen to.

I have a very low tolerance for long jam sessions. The Dead are not for me. I really enjoyed the first half of this album. I love me some excellent blues guitar! but they lost me with the last two songs

Live music that's so well recorded and performed that you can barely tell. Jams that are intricate and interesting, but go on for just a bit too long. Classic! Favorite songs: Whipping Post, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Hot ‘Lanta 3.5⭐️

Loved it,

overall really fucking enjoyable but i can't help but grow a bit tired of endless jamming...the best bits are tightly arranged and the worst are when they noodle for like 15 mins straight...also i don't really feel angst in Gregg's voice, at least not live 8/10

Maravilla

Not into jam bands or bands that jam. However I found this a good romp. Exquisite guitar work.

Very enjoyable listen, so diverse and captivating.

This was a really fun live album with some solid jams in there. Admittedly I wasn't paying super close attention to write a thorough review but I enjoyed it so much that I listened to it twice and will probably come back to listen to it again later. A couple standouts that I remember were In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and Whipping Post. I remember a few times that the harmonica parts were awesome as well.

Such a fun album! I hadn't ever listened to this. I liked the first 2 songs, but the magic really happens on track 3, Stormy Monday. Then it really just takes off through You Don't Love Me. The whole song just peaks and valleys. Its completely guitar driven, but has really cool bass lines driving it forward, up and down. They even tease "Joy to the World" at the end of You Don't Love Me. Then the record just goes on a journey from Hot Lanta through In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. Not a lot of vocals, just straight shredding, which again, peaks and valleys and get poignant at parts. Its truly improvised progressive electric blues. I do like how they shift gears a bit and let the organ come in pretty hard with In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, its a good change of pace. This track also goes hard with percussion and drums. I feel like this song is kind of the heart and soul of them being a true jam band. Its really dialed up in this song. Whipping Boy is a perfect ending to the record. Its so intense and so epic. Its a perfect blues epic. Overall, I really enjoyed this record. So fun to hear this jam band. It would have been fun to see them and Grateful Dead. They're different, but also so similar. This really feels a little more guitar driven. Where I feel like GD gets more varied with the keys, organ and harmonica. Either way, Dickie Betts was a legend and played guitar like a god.

For the time (1971), it was a bit ahead of its time, so I can see the historical value in it. I even enjoyed it a bit. But it's also a bit "OK, man, I get it... can we move on already?". 3-1/2 stars, but rounding up to 4 for the historical value of the blending of genres that would eventually become "southern rock".

Not a fan of jam bands, this is some awesome guitar work though.

Absolutely amazing album, never heard it before but it’s drawn me in

Love Allman Brothers, live album was great.

Solid Rock

Masters

The Allman Brothers' big break. This is a bluesy album...Statesboro Blues and Done Somebody Wrong really drive it home. Gregg Allman doesn't get enough credit, love his organ playing. Two guitarists (one on the Mt. Rushmore of guitarists) and two drummers, how did this work so well? Maybe I like jam bands more than I thought or maybe the Allmans are the only ones to get it right. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is the most "jam band" song on the album, not loving it. If my dad could go back and see one concert in all of human history, I'm guessing this is the one he'd pick. Even Allman Brothers' jams are not my cup of tea. And they have a lot of guys who need to have solos. I will state, without hesitation, that this is the best jam band album of all time. They launch into the start of Mountain Jam right at the end of Whipping Post (which is definitely the greatest jam song of all time) and wish they had included it on the album.

4.5 stars. Pretty phenomenal live album. Gets jam band-y but not overly so, lots of driving southern rock and blues that keep the energy going and really clean-sounding recording. Standout is "Statesboro Blues".

I get it they’re great musicians who make great music and jams, but 15-20min songs loses me sometimes. That being said, my own attention span is my fault and that’s my only complaint, these guys rock. Need an adderol.

To be at this concert. Few jam out like the Allman Brothers. When they say rock and roll was born from blues, this album is a perfect exampl. Like the missing link between ape and neanderthal but it’s right here

Yeah this rocked. I love blues. I can't bring myself to give a live album a 5, and this album just feels like a long extended jam rather than a produced and put together piece of art - plus, there's nothing really 'unique' about this, it's just blues, and good blues at that. I also think it goes on for a bit long, there's only so many guitar solos you can listen to for an hour to make this a 'perfect' live album. Still, I enjoyed this a lot and it's well deserving of a 4.

I love a good blues riff and this has plenty of them. Once I realised this was a jam album and just let the music flow by it was really good. Yes it's super long but it didn't really feel it.

I'd heard the Allman Brothers before, but only with later studio tracks like Ramblin' Man, but they never stuck with me. I quite like this album, great blues guitar solos. Vocals get the job done. I think if I was in the crowd for these performances in '71 it'd probably go very hard and I'd be well and truly all about it. Statesboro Blues - This tune is great, fantastic blues rock guitar, probably the best of the album. I think the tighter length helps immensely. Lyrics are standard fare. You don't Love Me - some of the solos show proficiency and some nice licks but ultimately lingered on too long, quite a bit of needless repetition particularly between minute 7 and 11. Sometimes a Live show just turns into a Jam session with an audience and not in a good way. Whipping Post - I'd always thought this was a Frank Zappa song, pleasant surprised to find out there's another version of this great tune. I don't mind this tremendously long live version, it has its fun quirks but I prefer the studio version off their first and self titled album

SHORT REVIEW TODAY EVERY SONG A BANGER, GREAT, OR EVEN PERHAPS PHENOMENAL 9/10 FAV TRACKS - ALL OF 'EM LEAST FAV - NONE

I have always heard about the Allman Brothers band, mainly I knew that Free Bird was written about Duane Allman but I never really bothered to listen to any of their songs except one time when Midnight Rider was recommended to me on spotify. Which is a massive error on my part. If there's two things on this planet I love it's long guitar parts and soulful semi-literate white boys performing songs written by black dudes. Every song on this album is great, it's the kind of thing you can put on and sit on your balcony, demolish a pack of darts and drink 10-20 beers to. No real complaints about this album other than the fact I think Zappa did a better and tighter cover of Whipping Post but that's just me being a dickrider for music's biggest wanker. Since this album is mostly instrumental work I thought I would bring attention to the brains behind the band, Greg Allman. This dude was married SEVEN times, including once to Cher. It would have been six but looks like he got one in right before the buzzer in 2017 when he married his seventh wife after an engagement of 5 years which is ironically longer than 5 of his 6 previous marriages. Totally understandable as this dude was a boneyarder who testified against his security staff and got him locked up for 75 years (served 18 months) and that's what got his bandmates to stop talking to him for like three years.

Enjoyed it, would be great as background music for studying or relaxing. Tracks too long to want to listen to specifically I think

Amazing live album, the last track is obviously mind melting, but there is high energy and great playing the whole time. A

300 albums. It's kind of hard to believe. And I'm not even 30% of the way through the list! So, how do I feel about this album being my 300th album? I mean, it's not the best 50-album milestone I've had (album 250 was Station to Station and it's kind of hard to top a Bowie album), but it's not the worst one. This is easily one of the best live albums I've gotten so far. I was pretty worried at first when I saw this was a 76-minute long live blues rock album. But hey, it is far from the worst 76 minute long album I've ever heard (Haunted Dancehall, am I right?). The sound is thoroughly entertaining. There's a lot of talent here with things like the guitar work. The singing and lyrics are both quite good as well. The elements of jazz mixed in with the blues rock provides a good genre blend. The album's pretty long, but there are albums that felt slower than this for sure. The live elements like speaking from band members and audience noise are minimal, but still present enough to provide a cohesive experience. Overall, this is a solid album, but not the best one I've listened to this week. My last album, Let It Bleed, would've certainly made for a better milestone than this. Light 4/5.

Good blues guitar, potentially would stick this on again!

Um bom blues pra ouvir ouvindo uma boa pinga. Brabos.

Great Live Album! Strong Performance.

I find not depressed enough or cheery for most blues. This falls within my sweet spot. Done great guitar work by one of the greatest fraternities. Well since my doggy left me….

"In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" is kind of proto-Steely Dan?

boring ass jammy blues for the first half but those last 3 kinda rip?

4.5/5 great jam album

This is an impressive concert for sure and I loved listening, but the prolonged guitar solos do tend to get a bit repetitive. It’s a concert and recorded fully live so I do find the improvisation quite impressive and loved being along for the ride. I was listening with my family though, and did sometimes feel I was ‘subjecting them to the record’ rather than ‘listening to it’…. Not quite a 5 from me but very close.

It was pretty nice but the length! wow

thought i'd feel fatigued by these songs being quite long but they really kept my attention. great blues-y vibe and defs not too repetitive. good shit

125/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

Surprisingly OK. Despite being a life album I liked it. Some songs are too long and self-indulgent but there is enough to like here.

Pretty great

It's a rocking blues album with too long songs and jamming and who knows what but I'm all in for it today.

this is like the textbook definition of dad-rock, laid-back, lowkey and dope as hell

My dad told me a story once that he had breakfast with the allman brothers at a truck stop diner. Anyways this album and eat a peach are two very nostalgic pieces of music for me, since it was one of the things that bonded myself with my dad. But another thing that bothers me about older live albums is that they cut out the in between of songs. Makes you wonder if they are also doing arrangement swaps so the songs aren’t in that order or different takes elsewhere. Anyways.

Lol I literally just finished listening to a 70s double live album many consider to be among the greatest of all time, and here's another one. So, 70s blues guitar southern rock. Not my favourite genre. The first couple of tracks slide by without incident. Stormy Monday is a classic however, and this is the version well known. You don't love me - hoo boy, Duane Allman was some guitarist. Hot Lanta, reckon I would enjoy this more in isolation. We've just had a lot of great guitar noodling. Do a song now. Aaaand the next track is a 13 minute jam. Bloody excellent though, to be fair. So ok don't expect songs, these are like Phish except good. Whipping Post - woah, singing! I see we're in for 23 minutes, presumably they just keep singing throughout that. Surprisingly this is not so. Yes ok well this is absolutely fantastic isn't it. Only 5 minutes in. ...Well. that was simply magnificent. All the way through. Goes straight into the 5* track playlist. So yeah. Mixed feelings about that one. Some pure genius on display. A bit too rich in said genius to enjoy all in one go.

Classic slice of Americana, expertly executed blues with a 10-strip of improvisational psyche.

Excellent

Thankfully there's not been many live albums on here - my view is that in general, unless you're familiar with a band it's very rare that a live album would be more enjoyable that the studio versions. However, I would probably guess that the opposite would be true here. Not the biggest blues fan, but this live album actually made me interested in exploring more. Definitely the best live album on this list so far. Only a few unnecessary moments (the classic drum solo, the 3-5 minute quiet bit that you're just waiting to pass) that come with every love album, but the rest was pretty stellar. Only 1 weak track and that was possibly the shortest on the album.

Some of the best blues rock I ever did hear. Will return to this one

Oh good, let's close out the weekend with an old friend. I grew up on this one. Many of my friends consider this their finest work. It's hard to dispute it's reach and influence.

Excellent mix of rock and blues

Very much a vibe

I can see how this band inspired Lynyrd Skynyrd! The instruments are played really well and the solos rock. Issue is some of the songs are too long

TFTI, sounded like a real good time 🙄

I thought it was almond brothers!! I was so excited for songs about nuts

Great live album. Just a vibe, really organic jams that never stop to be catchy and contagious. 4/5

Essentially a live jam session and I would say a pretty good one at that. This is a good album for the right mood where one might want to put on some headphones, sit back and depart on an hour and eighteen minute long journey. Bluesy with southern flavoring added to the mix.

Good live album. Probably better if you're a fan of them and know the songs.

Blues, Rock, 1971 -> 4

Oh goody goody another 70s rock album and it's live too??? It's my lucky day today wowie I hope it's like Made in Japan my favourite like album ever. 7 songs for 1 hour is insane. Favourites: Statesboro blues, you don't love me intro, hot 'lanta (always appreciate when men keep their mouths shut), in memory of Elizabeth reed. Fire instrumentals but I cannot support 20 minute songs. 4/5

What the hell is up with these live albums and their 20-minute tracks. I don't need to hear all that. With that being said this was pretty groovy and made for some excellent background noise while studying. I don't care much for the excessive instrumental solos on recording though. Favourite was Done Somebody Wrong, 4

I like it a lot, especially in the second half/latter half of the album. The first part felt a bit slow for me, but it might just have been because I was hungover and on my way to work

This was very cool, really hit right on a hot summer evening.

Whipping post epic

It was a good blues/rock album.

Groovy, smooth, relaxing. Another good jammy performance. Wish I could have been there.

Pretty good.

Jumbling loose blues

I'm not one for live albums, but this is the rare exception. Good stuff.

This was a fun listen. I've heard they were a jam band, but I have never heard any of their live albums. It started of more bluesy than I expected. Overall a big fan of this.

Awesome, boogy filled funky rock! I loved this one!

You don't love me a funky jam, although 19 minute track! Really fun funky rock, amazing for a live album, will maybe listen again

#206. I think this is the first live album I've listened to on this list so far that is actually good. 4/5: great.

8 / 10 Blues - Rock clásico. Guitarras buenísimas de los Allman.

really grew on me as it went on :)

Enjoyed Heard the strypes cover first

The problems I have with live albums mostly boil down to awkward crowd interaction and poor recording quality, and this album (for the most part) had neither of these issues. I just wish they spent a little less time on each song so they could do more of them. But overall, not bad and pretty enjoyable!

This absolutely blew me away. Over an hour of the supreme work of the late Dickey Betts is utterly mesmerising, making this truly a live performance for all time. Insane song lengths are welcome when there’s such excellent production.

"At Fillmore East" is the first live album by American rock band the Allman Brothers Band. The album opens with two strong blues rock tracks, but as the album progresses, it dissolves into a unique bluesy, country rock-jazz fusion, and eventually turns into full on unabridged noodling. An artistic and commercial breakthrough, this album is recognized as being one of the best live albums of all time.

Very cool southern rock and amazing. Live album! The guitar on this album is just great. The only reason I didn’t get a 5-Star is that some of the jams go on a little bit long and even though they are amazing sound pretty similar. 4/5.

Oh man, Dickie Betts just passed away and I've been meaning to listen to the Allman Brothers. Only know a couple of songs. This was great! Nothing I already knew. Spectacular guitar, playing off each other effortlessly. Sure it's a little jammy but much interesting than stoned noodling.

Classic live Allman brothers With all the original members before losing two members to motorcycle accidents on the same road a couple years apart The height of their powers with long imaginative jams great dueling guitars with great supporting cast and two drummers great great album!!

Excellent guitar work per the usual from these guys.

This was a difficult one to rate, as it's almost exactly a 3.5 for me. It was enjoyable and I felt it deserved another listen, but it wasn't amazing, and some of the songs maybe went on a little too long without really going anywhere. I can't understand how this band is compared to the Grateful Dead, as they don't suck and I've literally never heard anything from the Grateful Dead that didn't suck. I'm going with 4 stars because I'm feeling generous.

Really good for a live album, though some songs went on so long I forgot what song it was. They have a great bluesy rock sound.

This sounds amazing for being live. Whole thing is one big jam that blends together. Not always my style but I enjoyed it today. Clearly great at what they are doing.

4 excellent blues performances, great guitar work but it sometimes got a little bit too jammy

At Fillmore East was a pleasant surprise for me. Going into this 7 track album, I thought there was no way it could possibly be good enough to fill 80 minutes. However, it honesty was pretty good. The guitar on You Don’t Love Me was amazing, and Hot ‘Lanta was 5 minutes of perfection. Obviously, there major downside was an over exaggerated track run time, it could have been easily cut down and been made better. Then again, it was a live album, so it gets a bit of a break. All in all, At Fillmore East is a good album. Best Song: Hot 'Lanta Worst Song: In Memory of Elizabeth Road

Love the ABB !!!

Old school pub band vibes. Would I listen again... hell yeah. Clean 4.

Still got the blues

Live album, they were jamming out a lot, I liked it.

Like floating in a river, let the flow carry you.

Classic Allman Bros!

nice give it another listen. it's cHILL 4

A good solid live album for listening. I do like jazz and blues and rock so this is right for me. A great live album.

Classic

I usually hate live albums, but for bands like The Allman Brothers Band, it really is the best representation of what they have to offer musically. While this is a fantastic live album, I totally get why it wouldn't be for everyone. Even in its original format, it is looooong, and with only 7 tracks, that gives you an idea on some of the extended jams. But it shows off the bands skills, and is a rip roaring good time. I enjoy it a lot, but I definitely have to be in the right mood.

I know next to nothing about the Allman Brothers and I have no idea how important this album is, but I am surprised that the only album they have on this list is a live album. Overall this album is pretty good, there is some great guitar playing, and the extended solos don't overstay their welcome in my opinion. You Don't Love Me lost me a couple of times, but other than that a solid album

Great jams, incredibly solid all the way through, fun lead guitar parts and effects. Not really any songs that I feel the need to go back and listen to, nothing too catchy, but great to put on in the background and nod along to.

Great.

Pretty decent jam album! One of the best to do it, I love the slide guitar and the gruff vocals, it’s no wonder this is the band that invented southern rock. Much much more interesting than any other jam bands such as the dead or phish.

Guitar hero solos. Bendy sliding guitar. Bluesy

Very good live performance. I've heard a couple of the songs before like whipping post, and hearing the live version of it was really impressive.

Suprisingly good..at first, naff, after the second and third listen, really satisfying. Almost but not quite 4 stars ... Oh hang it. 4.

If what you want to hear is late 60s/early 70s blue-eyed blues, this is it.

Very good live album. Guitar work stands out.

Too much jam, but perfect!

Classic Rock in the most classical sense. They just kept laying on the jam like it was tea time with Queen Victoria, and my ears were crumpets.

Good bluesy music. I have a hard time getting into the just jamming/live music vibe, but this was better than most.

Erg lekker rauw blues-rock albumpje, sublieme gitaarklanken. En ook nog eens live. Helemaal niet mis. Dan is 1 en 1 toch wel heel gauw 4 sterren

Live albums can be so hit or miss depending on the quality of the recording work, but this one sounds fantastic, and while the songs definitely can get on the longer side the Allman Brothers are always quite good.

Masters of their craft at the peak of their powers, but ultimately I find this kind of music more fun to play than to listen to. I love this story about Duane I only learned recently: http://www.voicesofeastanglia.com/2012/08/wilson-pickett-and-duane-allman-birth-of-southern-rock.html

Quite the jam album! I'm not as familiar with the Allman Brothers Band as I'd like to be, but I imagine that was a great show. I kind of expected more lyrics/singing, but then, what do I know?

Great blues, just not quite as soulful as my taste--reminds me of Robert Cray Band: really proficient with a slightly faster and smoother sound than I like in my blues (or rock).

it was great, actually. still not what im looking for but i liked it.

Really enjoyed this album. Wasn't sure what to expect. I'd heard the name but never listened to them before.

Good blend of sound from blues and rock.

Great record

It’s good but too country for me

Great blues

Not my every day style of music, but this is really good stuff.

Toller Blues!

Was an enjoyable experience to listen to this foundational white R&B record. Not going to keep it for mobile but we'll keep it for the shuffle

Un disco del cual se disfruta la improvisación en vivo porque el instrumentista te hace meter en su mood.

Pretty good actually

Great jamming. Nice improv in playing-looser live and line that. Had not heard this entire album before.

DAMN! This album is straight sex, the ways these guys can make their instruments sing is incredible, so much passion oozing out of this live jam. 4.2

some really long ass songs in this one but i actually quite liked it

1971. That would have been awesome to experience

Solid blues rock. Great background jams with some real bangers. Obviously it can be a little tedious at times, but not bad.

Not a fan of live albums generally speaking but I didn't mind this one. Some songs went way too long. Overall I liked this, could listen to it again but not adding it to my playlist which is what it will take to get 5 stars from me.

Holy Moly...the jamming out!!! Upbeat jams but soooo long. Enjoyable listen. 4/5

I guess Allman bros was the first jam band? Holy guitar noodling Also I stopped listening to the whipping post about 14 mins in. Still had 6 to go

Alfa! Great guitar and drumming. 2nd half is better. Too long but still enjoyable.

Started listening in my shop this morning (Monday) when my husband came out to leave for work - he walked in and said, “man, you gotta cool-it! This is something for 11 o'clock on a Saturday night!” Has some great jams - I’m sure it was killer for the rockers of the early 70’s. Would have loved to see that! But I can only take so much long-form guitar jams and then I start ignoring it. Thanks for the suggestion, glad I listened.

Not a favorite but listened

I’m not gonna claim these guys invented the 14th fret hammer-bend-wail, like the ability to play an entire solo around two fucking elastic strings and three frets, but lord did they perfect it. Obviously rock is the blues yadda yadda but I *believe* it coming from Gregg. Guy didn’t fuck around. And neither did his band. To have seen them at this show, their heyday, *the* heyday—makes the cut for 1001 places to time travel to, for sure.

I really wanted to love this more than I do, especially because I know it’s foundational to so many and I think of my friend JP whenever I hear the Allman Bros and I love that guy. It just didn’t break through me though, and I really tried to let it.

probably a 5

Feels like I’m a heartbroken cowboy in a 70’s dive bar.

jam band, man. makes me miss living in a small hippy snowboarding town, where everyone listened to jam bands and smoked massive amounts of weed.

loved this

JA - klar!

Love the Allman Brothers Band. This is a great album. The “songs” are excellent, the “jams” are just too long. I know that’s their hallmark, but some of them are just too self indulgent. The musicianship is stellar. Their abilities unquestionable. But enough rambling…the more succinct songs are the stronger entries. I give those a five star rating. The jams, three. Average? Yep….a four. Good stuff.

Impressive blending of several styles, including country, rock, jazz, and most notably blues. The band and instruments mesh well together. You can tell they've rehearsed these pieces a lot, because even live it sounds like it could be a studio recording. The opener, Stateboro Blues, and the three longer tracks are all highlights, though at times you really start to notice their length. The extended ending to Whipping Post, with countless false finishes, is good, and would've been fantastic to hear live (without knowing the track length in advance). The guitar playing is superb but plays it safe stylistically (every excellent solo is very similar-sounding). 4/5

Hard blues! La qualità si sente, gruppo fortissimo anche se dopo un po’ di ore di ascolto, il loro genere mi stordisce

Very cool and way more bluesy than I would think.

Classic 70's guitar, rhythm and blues, southern rock album. Back in the days when "live" hits became the norm vs. studio. "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed"! Love, love, love these long, drawn-out instrumentals! Don't hear many artists doing that anymore...

This live Whipping post is astounding, remember the first time I heard it.

This is pretty masterful guitar playing. Some of the best blues rock. Mostly instrumental stuff, and without a great vocalist it’s not all the way a five star for me

When you listen to Led Zeppelin live, they draw out "Dazed and Confused" to an interminable length. It seems to go on for a VERY long time. I started to feel that way listening to the live version of "Whipping Post" on this album. It just felt like the song was going on WAY too long. The song itself is not known for its brevity. It's a pretty epic song, even the studio version at 5:17. But to take it and drag it on for over 20 minutes. I mean, you REALLY have to go somewhere interesting. And I am not seeing it in this rendition. The other stuff is still pretty good, even "You Don't Love Me" which is 19 minutes. The shorter songs are handled well, and the band is tight throughout. "Statesboro Blues" is the big single from this release, I guess. But man, 23 minutes. I like long songs and all, but this... I guess you had to be there?

First Allman Brothers experience of any kind and wasn’t sure what to expect. Assumed I would be listening to a rock album, and was surprised (in a good way) at how much of a blues and country feel this album has. Also a great live album with a ”jam band” feel to it. Listened to the album twice, and enjoyed it more the second time, but not an album I would play continuously. Midnight Rider was the only song I’d ever heard before, and my favorite songs are In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and Whipping Post.

Cool. Jazzy. Nice background music.

Good music,.

This album was recorded live, has some classy blues riffs in many tracks that you won't get in a polished produced album. Good chill out blues.

Pretty good live album, but nothing too crazy. The ending song was incredible and the opening song really hooked me, but the middle was just alright. Not bad by any regards.

Great sunny day driving record! Young Duane rips!!

Statesboro Blues - 5 Done Somebody Wrong - 4 Stormy Monday - 3.5 good, but slow You Don't Love Me - 4 not sure why this is one song, but okay. Hot 'Lanta - 3 In Memory of - 3.5 Whipping Post - 3.5 Overall, good music but way too drawn out.

At Fillmore East by Allman Brothers Band Tuesday 5/14/2024, 10:12, office S Tier————————— Whipping Post A Tier————————— You Don’t Love Me Statesboro Blues Stormy Monday B Tier————————— Done Somebody Wrong Memory of Elizabeth Hot ‘Lanta

I'm surprised at the lukewarm reaction to this album. No, it's not pure blues. It doesn't have anything on T-Bone Walker or any of the other greats they cover in the top half of this album. It's also not what this music is trying to do. They're having fun and vibing with the crowd. It's a different aspect of Blues and more importantly Blues Rock. I am always skeptical of "jam bands" because wankery and musicality are often confused. Bands like the Allman Brothers do make me enjoy it though. That said, I would probably dig this live much more than I do on record. Looking forward to their studio albums coming up, but enjoyed this one.

Yeah this is a bit of me, great groove, great vocals, top guitar.

Always worth another listen, a perfect playing a lazy afternoon

Whole lotta guitar, classic band and great listen while in the shop!

really liked the Mars-Volta-vibe!

Great blues jams. Second half is a bit too meandering for me though.

80/100

not a big blues guy but You Don’t Love Me, Elizabeth Reed, and Whipping Post easily make this a 4 star album

Awesome ! Real good listen.

Me gusto mucho, pero es muy repetitivo escuchar el álbum completo

Leuk dit voor op de achtergrond whatever

heerlijke blues, daarna gewoon jamsesh

These guys are masters at their craft, however, it seemed a bit self indulgent at times.

Great album. Great musicianship.

Surprisingly good, I really didn't think I would like them, going into rotation

Such a great album. Love most of the album. Love the bluesy sound, the bass and the drums. The vocals are raw and while the longer tracks do progress with purpose and with some rememerable guitar solos, it could’ve been a bit more tighter by cutting maybe 10-15 mins from the the longer tracks. But it’s still great. It’s a light 4 to a strong 4 for me.

Not bad, not the best all man album

Love this album, already had it on rotation

Great live album - would revisit again, but honestly I'm a little tired of classic rock. Maybe because it is such a well established genre, the novelty factor is quite limited. Even stuff like The Doors (which holds a very close place in my heart) wouldn't grab my ear now like it did when I was young, so I guess good, but wouldn't probably revisit. Fingers crossed for a more recent album today.

Great album, You must listen to the deluxe version though, some of the best tracks there.

Toto som este nepocul a je dobre, ze som to pocul

The Allman Brothers are listed as a “rock” band, but this is very bluesy. I definitely hear the rock too, but the blues is what’s attracting me. Stormy Monday feels very soulful. However, it’s a remake of a blues original/standard. I’m also loving You Don’t Love Me. Catchy, upbeat, good groove. They could’ve spared me the last 7-10 minutes, but it was probably better live. However, I definitely enjoyed this album.

Yeah I like them, and that's why I have it 4 stars. I have no other comments, your honor.

Zaczyna się średnio, ale później coraz lepiej. Dla laika jak ja to taki klasyczny improwizowany blues/jazz.

they were playing tf out of that electric guitar

Some tracks were stronger than others, but yeah man they knew what to do with those guitars! I've had Elizabeth Reed in my iTunes library since high school so I already loved that one but their version of Stormy Monday was also really nice

Grovin’ and a rockin’

Definitely cool. Maybe a couple songs a little long. Gets better as the album progresses.

A great peace of history and a great peace of art too. I definitely like the way they play. Its for me a truthfully and spiritual way of playing music.

I mostly listened to it I swear. I liked it. Made me think of Hendrix. Hendricks?

good 70s rock

One of the best live albums I have heard. The crowd wanted to hear Whipping Post and they got their wish, twenty-three minutes of it.

Great live music.

really inspiring how people can communicate this well while jamming, and build solos and structure so well, I loved this, especially the tones chosen

As blues/rock as it gets. Got me moving.

It's a decent live album by a band that I didn't have the chance to hear before

Couldn't help but thinking to myself "this is music".

I listened this in my 20s, I like blues. "Whipping post" blew my mind (that song is 5/5). Overall a great live album, some nice rock electric blues, and improvisation. A solid 4 (if you like blues )

Great Album

An iconic album, deserved. This captures the spirit of Allman Brothers Band, arguably at their peak. Widely considered one of the best live albums in rock. They’re the original Southern Rock band, but don’t have the same foot-stomping, honky tonking feel that a lot of most of the bands that followed. ABB has more of a bluesy, jamming musical style, a bit “smoother”. But they can certainly rock out, too. If there’s a downside, it’s that the extended jams can go on, evidenced by Whipping Post which takes the 5 minute studio version and stretches it out to 22+ minutes. Or Elizabeth Reed which doubles from its studio version to almost 13 minutes. This is 7 songs in 76 minutes, it is not concise. Still, one of the essential albums of 70’s rock. 4/5

Absolutely love that blues rock sound, Allman Brothers are always a great listen. You Don't Love Me is a favourite.

Ahh, improv. I can imagine that this was a GREAT concert to attend. I love me some jamming. A bit part of enjoying that is 'being there', though. Sadly, I wasn't there. However, this album is still very nice, consistent, poppin'. I can't get myself to constantly pay attention to this, but I listened to it on the background and found myself constantly joining the rhythm. So, a very functional album, then!

I really want to like this. I really do. Maybe the Live version isn't for me. But I really want to like this.

great live album

Groovy

Geluisterd op 21-10-2023 Luister lekker weg, goede klassieke rock

surprisingly good.

Even without lyrics, the Allman Brothers Band know how to tell a story.

Pleasantly surprised

awww baby its the allman brothas here we go

This was an awesome blues album! I went in with low expectations since it was another 70’s album, but boy was i blown away. I loved how raw and in the moment the whole band was. I will def listen to again. I only nocked it one star because a few songs were a bit too long but regardless an amazing album.

Rating: 4.4

Pretty decent blues album, nut the biggest blues fan but I liked it!
