Reviews (page 14 of 14)
Genre: 90s Dad Rock Rating: 1/10. Honestly just felt like one 1hr long song. Not a very big fan of straight guitar riffs and screaming. Favourite Song: Enter Sandman. 2 songs added to playlist.
I'm sorry Lars but I can never like you or your music.
Racist redneck rock music. I hate it.
It’s fine
Great guitar, awful vocals except for Nothing Else Matters.
horrivel metallica só era bom na fase thrash metal, e esse álbum, como a gente sabe, é a transição oficial pro mainstream rock dodoi... esse consegue ser ruim em níveis absurdos pprt
hate it
Boring. Lacks the energy needed to sell me on the sound.
Jesus this was a slog. So plodding. So devoid of melody. So unvarying in it's tone. A chore to listen to.
No! I just dont like this at all.
I dug up my copy--second layer stuff. I get that this speaks to a certain kind of angst, and that was a reason I originally got a copy to check out. It didn't really speak to me then and even less so now. It seemed too redolent of toxic masculinity with fascist overtones. Maybe I missed something, but I don't think so. Husker Du (especially Zen Arcade) seemed like a more direct line to what I was feeling and the sonic catharsis I sought. IMO this has too much Black Sabbath and Spinal Tap vibes to suit me.
not really my thing, I'm just gonna vote based on what albums I would rather listen to than this. sors
Awful band
Seems to be hours of someone clashing dustbin lids and yelling tonelessly in my ears. ‘Thrash’ is it.
Not altogether intolerable but I really can’t listen to this kind of stuff for more than a song at a time. 1.5
If you told me that this was the same song on loop for an hour, I would believe you.
My truck is normal sized and it doesn't have a Gadsden flag license plate on it. I don't have any tribal tattoos on my biceps, either. Is it still okay if I listen to this album? Seriously, how Metallica went from the technical thrash metal of "...And Justice For All" to the dumbed-down, super-simple butt-rock sound on this album still confounds me. Music for douchebags by douchebags. 1 star.
It’s a genre that’s just not for me.
Text von Enter Sandman plus Musik von The Unforgiven = Abenteuerland in unangenehm
monotonously driving to nowhere interesting, kinda like a long tedious drive on the interstate
Refused to listen.
I havent listened to this album in its entirety since it came out. It will be another 34 years before I do it again. What a MAJOR disappointment it still is. Overproduced Boring/Unexciting Sell Out Metallica going from pioneers of Thrash Metal to radio friendly hard rock has got to be one of the biggest betrayals of rock history. What this listen did for me though was make me realize that even if this album came out by a different band, I still wouldn't like it.
I really dig the first 4 Metallica albums. This one not at all. I was taking the bus back home after teaching, fell asleep during Enter Sandman actually, woke up rudely to Nothing Else Matter, no wonder I never listened to this album all the way through, it fucking sucks.
Crap
When I was in middle school and this album first came out, I vividly recall dancing away to Enter Sandman at the school dances. While I enjoyed them back then, I find them incredibly annoying now.
Not Metallica again....
The final straw. This album marked the complete metamorphosis of a metal band into a pop band. Time proved me correct...this album is soulless trash, not even music.
Pass.
Not for me
I tried to give this album a chance but there is just something about their sound that I can't stand. It sounds exactly like the generic metal music that plays at the gym and I'm forced to listen against my will. The last track summarises my listening experience perfectly: 'The Struggle Within'.
To the bottom right hand corner of the all black front cover of Metallica’s Metallica sits a coiled timber rattlesnake. In early pressings of the album the snake’s made almost imperceptible by its dark grey colouring, but I promise it’s always been there. The snake design is borrowed from the 1775 Gadsden flag, a banner that gives the snake a thorny subtitle: “Don’t tread on me” (also the title of track five of Metallica, for the avoidance of any doubt regarding the snake’s provenance). Initially designed by Christopher Gadsden for use by the American Continental Navy (whose chief task then was intercepting British supply ships en route to arming their countrymen in the Revolutionary War), in its 250 year history the flag has seemingly meant something to everyone across the American political spectrum. Libertarians globally have stood under the flag’s bright yellow, appropriating it as their signature shade; abortion rights activists have twisted the snake into the shape of a uterus, a warning to anyone who thinks they have sovereignty over a woman’s body; Jan 6 rioters paraded it around the US Capitol as the world looked on, horrified. (My favourite “Don’t tread on me” fact concerns Nick Offerman. Both his Libertarian turn in Parks and Recreation, Ron Swanson, and his romantic survivalist at the end of the world in The Last of Us, Bill, are seen with Gadsden flags in their possession.) Having shifted millions of albums worldwide since its release in 1991, you’d have to say that Metallica has as broad a valency as Gadsden’s flag. People click with it; “Enter Sandman”, “Sad but true”, “Nothing else matters” – these are songs that the numbers indicate it’s safe to assume someone will like by default. And yet … Few records elicit as many groans for me as this. Time and again I’m left begging them to get on with it, assuring them I get it, willing them to play “Master of the puppets” instead. From the often turgid lyricism to the lame use of an orchestra (something they doubled down on in the utterly fucking woeful S&M) this is exactly the sort of album you’d expect a thrash band who want to make some money to make. (That they chose to do it under the watchful eye of Motley Crüe’s producer itself tells you plenty.) It’s profoundly big enough and profoundly bad enough, unfortunately, to bring us back to Gadsden’s flag. Shorn of any properly political dimension – seriously, just try to bleed any actual perspective or insight out of the macho fightin’ talk on this record – the snake’s nobly pugnacious sentiments feel only sneering. Bellicose. Stupid. And to that end, perhaps Metallica is a fitting final form for the plucky serpent. Maybe that revolutionary spirit embodied by “Don’t tread on me” has now turned in on itself for good – coincidentally, Hetfield has said this record was the sound of the band turning “in”. Maybe the aggressive-seeming-but-ultimately-nonsensical snarl we hear on tracks across this record actually anticipates American exceptionalism’s collapse into American isolationism. It’s a bloody minded mentality; and this is music for picking fights to. Revolution. Independence. Expansion. Petulance. Ostracism. Sad but true.
Oh no, not more Metallica
Not a fan. I have liked some of Metallica's earlier output, but this does nothing for me. Even worse, it actively puts me off. The singles -- Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, The Unforgiven -- are the worst offenders, and feel responsible for the next 30 years of bad rock music.
Not a fan
*very little music. Mostly noise and screaming.
Awful
Perfectly awful.
Me niego a escuchar a estos mword
I won't sugar coat this, I do NOT like Metallica! There are so many reasons to hate this band. Their music is a compromised combination of a bunch of long haired rockers trying to continue to be..."hard rocking" and making music that appeals to confused and naive people that think this is cool and actually hard rocking. I hate their singer, never did and never will and Lars Ulrich is a entitled twerp, not only for being the driving force, along with the band to take down peer to peering sharing because his "livelihood was at stake", but mainly because he sucks as a drummer. I have nothing against the other guys in the band, but overall the music is shitty (I'm guessing the 16.4 million people that bought this album will disagree, or not?) and overrated and even though it has that unfortunate ear-worm, "Enter Sandman" on this record, it is not hard to hate. The ultimate sellout band.
I fail to understand why this album is here. Awful.
Enter Sandman just about ok. The rest is just noise
It's hard not to see crowds of fans in my head when hearing this album. It's good artistic work, but I really don't like what it created.
Not for me
Repetitive and angry, not a fan at all.
Metallica is pretty bottom of the barrel for me.
A horrible slough of an album. No progression, uninteresting song structures, tinny/grating instrumentals and annoying vocals that didn't change throughout the album. I'm super disappointed in this and am NOT looking forward to the other Metallica albums on this list. 1/5
wow i do not like metallica 1/5
obviously this was cheesy and stupid and i would never in a million years listen to it again of my own volition. BUT it was not entirely unbearable and i can once again see how it would appeal to people who have had no exposure to other music, or people who do not value artistry or beauty. do i think those people have bad taste and do i look down upon them—nay, pity them—for thinking this is genuinely good music? yes. was i relieved when the album was over? yes. (because it meant i could listen to pavement.) however, i can understand its appeal. i would not throw a fit if somebody insisted on listening to it around me, but i would still sulk for at least five minutes and bitch about it under my breath periodically.
Sorry I only listened to one song
Nope…1/10
Definitely not for me!
If the guitars were actually heavy the riffs could be cool I guess, until he starts singing and it just turns to shit. But good job on learning your scales for those terrible solos my dudes. Nothing else matters takes me back to a time where I wish the US and the USSR started bombing each other. At least no one would have to listen to this shit. The song formula always repeating around some stupid scooped mids riff is also shit. Bro, metallica sucks, bunch of assholes, bring back napster, steal their music. This is the first album I have to actually skip tracks,. Fuck metallica.
i am always shocked by how comparatively normie metallica sounds compared to what i have in my head. i think i hang out with too many metalheads with niche subgenre tastes
not my vibe
Je comprends les qualités mais j'ai pas full de plaisir à écouter ce style malheureusement.
Awful stuff all round, unbelievably depressing
Your bag of tricks ran out years ago, Lars. Stop trying to hide it.
Couldn’t be further from my line of music
STOP I DON'T WANNA LISTEN TO METALLICA AGAIN WHY IS THERE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEIR ALBUMS IN THIS WEBSITE
Wow - this one doesn’t hold up well. The album is bloated with a 60 minutes run time. It doesn’t need two ballads (it didn’t really need any frankly). It’s all mid tempo, it all blends together. It’s hard to believe Metallica was once a great thrash band hearing this album. Lars gets to suck less but this ain’t Metallica’s best by far. We do get more of Jason than we heard on …AJFA. But still barely allowed to be heard in the mix (thanks Lars). Poor Jason - heart and soul given for this band and completely spurned by Lars and James when it comes to mixing. Speaking of James… he’s just giving us his slam poetry notebook for song lyrics - nothing deep in this group of songs. And nothing that is truly memorable either. This is a mid-life (mid-band?) crisis album. It’s clear the Cliff Burton riffs are all gone and this is a band that just can’t find a way forward. I know it’s hindsight, but this was the beginning of the end. Beware of Bob Rock, he brings profits, but also destruction in his wake.
I'm baffled by the staying power of Metallica. This is unimaginative angsty rock for 11-year-olds. Grown men who think this or Master of Puppets are a worthwhile listen are trying to compensate for their perceived lack of masculinity. Embrace it, dudes. It's ok to enjoy colors other than black and red and to not beat your girlfriend.
Suck.
En kyllä odottanut, että tää ois näin tylsä. Hohhoijaa.
metallica is poo
Not my thing, never was
Oh, no. Please no. More Metallica? At this rate there are going to be 33 Metallica albums on the list, and they all sound the f£%^ing same. One is too many, and the returns are diminishing badly. We're well into the hundreds of albums, and given the tedious length of these, close to 5% of the time has been spent listening to this one terrible band. 0 🌟
Def not for me, but unsure if lacking merit? Fav: nothing else matters
Thinking of packing this project in. Life is too short to listen to Metallica
I've always found Metallica a pretentious band. Even their most popular songs, like "Enter Sandman", are boring and substanceless. Watching paint dry would've been a greater pastime than listening to the "Black Album." Both Black Sabbath and Nazareth did it better.
Same as other heavy metal bands: just not my style. it gives me headaches to listen to several of these songs in a row. Really not enjoyable. Nothing else matters is probably the only exception in this album.
Hetfield's voice is interminable and this record offends the senses with non-stop samey droning guitars with none of the same violence and character of their previous thrash work. Dismal listening.
oh goodness. first song had me excited which quickly faded as i was met with repetitvness for the next hour of listening. it was a struggle to finish the album, i don't recommend it.
This album blows.
Look - I didn’t get Metallica when I was a teen and all my friends were obsessed. 25 years on and that hasn’t changed. I didn’t finish it because honestly, what’s the point?
Not my vibe, like enter sandman
God I hated this so much. What a bunch of cry babies. That horrible muddy, swampy guitar sound, lyrics that basically come down to how terrible their life is, titles that are straight out of toilet graffiti at an emo school, it's such a cliché it's unbelievable. Just grow up lads. The worst song of all is Nothing Else Matters, because you've spent hours having your ears assaulted, then you finally get to a song with a bit of light and shade, and it turns out the light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train of misery and self-pity. Genuinely one of the worst songs committed to record, and their ongoing popularity is a blot on humanity's already quite blotty record.
Booo
couldn't listen to it. I hate metal
Da ist mir zu wenig Musik drin. Eintönig und öde. Kaum ein Riff... Und immer dieser Aggro-Gesang. Nichts für mich!
No
This is music for an army of braindead orcs marching out of Mordor. Jingoistic bullshit - this was probably Henry Kissinger's favourite band. enjoy the maggots, pig. 4 Metallica albums and counting. This band is awful. Oooh another growling in E minor song? ugh. Great guitar player tho. .... ok personal feelings aside this isn't the absolute worst. I still don't like it - will hold my nose a little for Enter Sandman even if it now unfortunately rivals "Crazy Train" as "most played song between periods" at hockey games.... it's catchy. Some melody in a few cuts and yeah Bob Rock gave this the big power pop production but .... no no no the drums sound like ass cannons. no I retract anything positive I really hate this. 3/10 1 star
Traaaaaaaash
4 Metallica LPs on 1001!
This album was like pulling teeth for me... I did not care for the vocals or the lyrics ("I hunt therefore I am" ok dude). The songs felt very repetitive and full of machismo. I suppose heavy metal just isn't my genre. Songs that I didn't hit skip on: 5 - Wherever I May Roam; 8 - Nothing Else Matters Would I revisit this album: No. lol.
Not a fan of metal. With the exception of the first track which is classic and catchy, I was not into the rest.
Not super excited to get started with this one. I guess it works for background music if you’re getting drunk on someone’s back porch. Nothing really stands out here musically besides kirk’s got a few really cool riffs. James’ lyrics are terrible. Drums are boring af. Didn’t really notice bass besides the opening to (I think) misery my friend which is a bass riff written by a middle schooler. A few cool songs I guess, none are coming with me. Lady Luck, please send me an album I give a f about!
It’s just such a redneck/all American music is extremely boring in its pretentious shallowness. It portrays the classic American feel of power which the rest of the world found irritating once, and laughable now. Music for Bible Belt angry teenagers with zero culture
I have just listened to Wet Leg and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Metallica they are not. Contrary to what that sentence might imply, I mean that as a compliment to the two former bands. This is the exact opposite of the Beatles' 'White Album': Metallica's 'Black Album' is the opposite colour, and is also the opposite of excellent. My father loves Metallica. I hated the band with a (very childish, I might add) burning passion in my childhood and I have very little interest in wasting sixty-two(!) minutes that I shall never get back. 'Enter Sandman' is one of the worst songs I have ever heard. Heavy metal, to be frank, is not a great genre: I struggle to comprehend how there seem to be so many metal albums on this list (a lot of which have received critical acclaim, to be fair) yet only one metal album has ever been nominated for the Mercury Prize in its thirty-year history. Why does it have to be turned up ever so loud -- is it to disguise the fairly mediocre instrument playing and average vocals? I'll gladly take classical music over this any day, given that it is played with... well, class. Who on Earth decided that Metallica get four albums on this list when neither Louis Armstrong or Édith Piaf have a single one? Eric Clapton and Radiohead (Radiohead!) also have four. Metallica are not on par with these greats. At least remove some of their albums and make way for something much better, like '13' by Blur or Rina Sawayama's début. That said, this album appears to have had a wide influence, which is a criterion important as to whether it should be in the top 1001 most important albums. 'Most important' is definitely different to 'best'. I do have friends who are big fans of Metallica and metal in general. 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' is an amazing album (yet, I mostly listen to the art rock pieces on it). If metal is what you like, then listen to it, enjoy it and don't let me, a random Internet album-listener, spoil your fun! While it is personally not to my taste, I can appreciate that there have to be some positives. And, out of respect to my father, I may give this a 2. Or not (to be honest, I did not give it a listen). Maybe another day. I have the whole summer to waste those aforementioned sixty-two minutes.
I can't seem to appreciate heavy metal music.
Like listening to a pubescent boy trying to fuck a brown crayon.
I struggle with the seriousness and portentousness of this type of pop music. The most cringeworthy element is when they do a "ballad" like The Unforgiven. It's all so "heavy", so serious in its intent as to be laughable. So when they er er er the guitars at least you get that this "metal" music has a kind of purpose which is to be loud and aggressive, and that's it. But here's the thing, it's completely one dimensional, there is no variation on the theme other than the portentous slow ones. Ok, so having said that Sandman is the apotheosis of this type of pop music, all the elements that have some appeal come together and it works. I remember at one point Channel 9 used it as the theme for State of Origin, it was perfect. My other point goes to the rhythm sections of this type of pop music. With the roots of rock and roll being black music, a good rocking band needs a great rhythm section, it's what moves us emotionally and makes the connection to the feel of the thing, in any of the genres. Take AC/DC, Phil Rudd swings and both the Mark bass players hold down those 16th notes in lock step with Phil, it's what makes the groove over which Angus and Malcolm do their thing. With Metallica there is no bass player period and Lars is an awful awful drummer, I have no sense of what it is he thinks he is doing, it is completely fucked and makes for an especially jarring listening experience. This process is really challenging, having to listen to so much awful music, interspersed with the occasional great record.
My god, heavy metal just sits so poorly with me. The instruments are so overdone and crowded. I hate to say it but I'd rather listen to wood chipping then that type of electric guitar. After the 2nd track I kinda slowly skipped through songs until nothing else matters, which has a bit more build up, but yeah. Surprise the non heavy metal fan likes the non heavy song. Yeah I mean its a 1 from me, I can't listen to it.
this shit sucks ass lmao fun pop metal ig monotonous drivel guitarherocore no more one liners
Meh.
Metallica? More like Metalli-no!
Lame. If enter sandman wasn’t the first one id skip right past. Must’ve been good in the 90s but It was like one long song.
Couldn't make it to the end, I disliked it that much.
Music for people who like everclear and America's Funniest Home Videos' nutshot compilations.
no good Ive always hated metallica and now I know for sure
I much prefer the thrash of earlier albums.
Worst band ever
more like metallicnahh
I don't care about any album released by Metallica after Cliff Burton died, RIP.
Not my cup of tea
The beginning of the end for these Thrash Metal gods. Shite. Just shite.
Classic Metallica album. Definitely one that got me hooked when I was a teenager.
Not really my kind of kusic
Jumping Jaysus my ears hurt, just make this stop. Every track’s the same - and they’re all sh1te
Arse biscuits.
Enter Sandman
I have tried so many times to like them and I just can't.
This was worse than Willie!
tbh ik i won’t be able to finish this album in the time i am given but it’s good i’m on “Sad But True” it’s super good ngl i didn’t think i would like it
Have owned this album since 1991
