Reviews (page 13 of 14)
I can appreciate that this is a very good heavy metal album…but I really don’t enjoy listening to heavy metal
guess im just not a metal fan, some okay songs but they all feel the same.
I respect the album but I'm just not huge on the heavy metal. Guitars were fine, will not go back to this
Great stuff funny energetic
Enter Sandman - legendary - legendary intro. After that..... well the epic drum sound wares thin.... starts to hurt. Can't stand the vocal delivery and monotony of the sound. I really don't get it.
I am a huge Metallica fan. Well, I was until this album. There are a couple of good songs: The God That Failed, Holier Than Thou are the ones I like. The rest, meh.
It sounds too rock for me, that’s not my glass of whisky… but I don’t agree with « nothing else matters », as the metal sound rock is not for me and I do matter about it. 2 stars thanks for the tube otherwise I would have ranked only 1 star
It's got a couple good songs and a very refined production, but it's a far cry from the energy of their first few albums. It's been a while since I've listened to this, but it reinforces for me that And Justice For All was the beginning of the end for Metallica, and this is just further along down that decline.
When this came out, heavy metal was about as popular as it has been, and probably ever will be. As a consequence of (or, perhaps, part of the reason for) this is that "the black album" is their most poppy and accessible collection of songs. Fans can argue about whether that makes it their "best" album, but to me it is the most melodic and chart-friendly collection of songs regardless. The simple truth is, my music taste has evolved since 1991 - while I have fond memories of this era, 30-plus years on it is all delivered with such earnest, with such a lack of wit and irony, it just makes me cringe. I mean, I get anger is an energy and all that, but singing about monsters under your bed and shit as if you really, REALLY mean it - come on, give us a break. It's all just a bit silly, isn't it?
More annoying the longer it went on. I do not like Lars's voice, especially when he tries to shout
4.5/10 This was a vast improvement on the first album by Metallica that I got on this list. It was at least listenable, and had some songs I actually liked. Much more straight heavy metal Good production, throwing a lot at it. The bass and drums in particular stood out. Too long. Like 33% too long. But boy do they take themselves seriously. This is not infused with any fun, it is serious music that can’t help but come across as a little pompous. Nothing Else Matters isn’t far off being a parody. Best: Enter Sandman
top songs: enter sandman, the unforgiven, nothing else matters would have given it a three if i could tell the difference between half of the songs
Lät som man trodde, inte min grej
I haven't listened to this album in over 25 years. My ex-wife loved this, and it was in heavy rotation back then. We saw the band for this tour, and they put on a good show, but fast-forward to now, and I just find it boring and repetitive. I think another 25 years is plenty before I listen to this again. Yawn!
Good background music while working on mindless spreadsheets.
Some songs that I enjoy, but I tend to find a lot of metal a bit boring? I think it's just not my thing, but it tends to feel a bit long and tiring at times. The heavy guitar in particular stands out as something I wish were different. I just don't get the same emotions from it that some others do. That being said, my favorites were Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters (not exactly original on my end lol)
Dated corporate rock
I'm gonna be real, this isn't bad at all, but all of these songs are very very contextual. As I sit here at my desk and listen to these tracks, I fully realize I'm supposed to be riding a motorcycle really fast to this or slam dancing in a mosh pit. But since I'm not, I don't feel it.
Not for me
I admit it, I couldn't finish this one.
metal. metal that feels like a solid color (here it's black, even if grey is more appropriate). metal everyone knows. metal that is perfectly adequate at what it does -- whatever that is -- and never strives for anything further. metal that took blood sweat and tears to produce. metal that proves you can bleed, sweat, and cry as much as you want and it won't automatically create a gesamtkunstwerk. metal your mom doesn't switch off when the radio plays it. metal the radio plays. metal that you could feasibly cover with your local indie folk band that uses mandocello. metal that fills stadiums. metal that could be considered a "safe aux choice". metal with a bit of thrash and a bit of groove and a bit of alt but really none of those things all at once. metal, stainless steel used for a butter knife made in Hoboken -- durable, polished, dull. metal you would presume is made by a band named "metallic-a".
Apart from the 2 good songs, I truly don't see the appeal. Everyone in my hick town loved this shit. Not me.
This isn't bad, I just don't like it. Or maybe it is bad, but I've grown up skipping past this stuff on the radio so I'm just used to it. His singing/screaming just sounds so cheesy. Metal sucks.
Bit dull - unlikely to revisit.
I get why they’re on the list and enter sandman is a jam, but outside of that I just don’t like Metallica
The only people who unironically listen to this are angry millenial dads
Its a classic, but I am looking for new things
I wasn't able to listen to this in it's entirety. It was just too heavy for me.
god i could barely get through this lol
Was denn dur de kopf lauft isch: was isch echt hüt für es album ready? Was mir bi dere Situation denn nöd chan isch in Metallica drilose. D.h. gleiches problem neuer Tag. Han mir 10 min Ziit gna. Mäh, isch halt nöd mis. Nothing else matters aber wunderschön. Süsch zu hardrockig. Muss glaub uf 2 Sternlis abrunde, sorry metallica ** Und peeps, ich wag mich namal zunere Prognose: Alli gänd zwei sternlis o.O
Some outstanding songs, the genre isn’t really for me but I can appreciate it nonetheless.
It does nothing for me, but I get it. It's like eating caprese. I get it, it's just never actually exciting or groundbreaking.
Alright, I’m glad to finally knock this one off the list and put it behind me. I’ve been avoiding it forever because I’m absolutely sick of it. Yes, I know Metallica is talented, and yes, this was a groundbreaking album that sold a ton of copies. I agree with all of that, but none of it changes the fact that this album annoys the hell out of me. After hearing it a thousand times over the last 30 years, 990 times was just too many! Oh, and if we count this listen, make that 991 too many times!
Not really my jam.
Couldn’t finish it. Why did the songs get so strained and uncool? I know they wanted to move on from “Damage Inc.” and the like but I’ll listen to that song fifty times before I crack the case on the later stuff. This album is NOT essential!
Besides the opener, came to this new. I’m not really a metal fan though, still not.
Opet 😂 a jao, ne znam šta dati ovome. Da, kultni je album. Je li realno dobar? Pa i ne baš. Vuče li me u djetinjstvo i čistu nostalgiju? Apsolutno. 2/5, 4.5/10
Starting this one by saying that this is for me the most overrated metal band ever and it's not even close. And from the 3 albums of them that are considered great this one is probably the worst one by far. Because if not of the very few great songs in here, wvery other song is complete garbage. Most of this album's songs don't even have the Metallica song saving point, which is the amazing riffs. Lastly I will die on the hill saying that their records have the worst production I have ever heard. About 4-4.5/10
Ape music
Not nearly as bad as people like to say it is. There are riffs here and the first few tracks really rock. But this is the far past their prime and there are way too many tracks on this.
“Enter Sandman” may be the best opening to an album ever. Afterwards this is just diminishing returns. 2/5
was fiine
back again with another "what the hell, sure." I can admire that this album is sonically consistent and cohesive, even if it made me think that several of the individual songs were one big long one.
You hate this album because it’s too different from the earlier Metallica albums that you like. I hate this album because it’s too similar to the earlier Metallica albums that I also hate. We are not the same. Also, I’ve read a book before in my life. Which, I have to assume that as you are a Metallica fan is another way in which we differ.
finally growing beyond leaning on the ride the lightning tracklist as a structural crutch, metallica proceeds to replace it with No Structure At All aside from "well we should probably space out a couple ballads in here." tbf im not sure if there Is a structure that would allow for a more flattering presentation of such one-note material...all big stompy riff rockers way more mid tempo than they arent. i never thought of metallica as a super good proggy band but that level of ambition at the v least ensures that theres always a variety of distinct ideas. if i found all this fun or exciting it would make up for all this ofc, i like plenty of one note fun records, but whether thru overplay or just my disinterest in mid tempo stompers its just a big shrug from me. on a lot of levels this is genuinely a kind of artistic progress, they probably could not have escalated on their current path beyond what and justice for all offered and so cutting open a new path that takes advantage of the fact that metallica's songwriting sense has always had some amount of populist rock star appeal even when hung on something ambitious makes a lot of sense, beyond what the Selling Out narrative would necessarily imply. still, the exchange was not worth it for me, and im not even a big metallica fan to begin with. i accidentally wished for something stephen sondheim related on this list, and the monkey's paw gave me the west side story interpolation on the no step on snek song
I never got the hype with Metallica.
i really hated this. It just stinks alcohol-fueled racism and "she looked older than 13" . I just can't stand this vibe. It's not a 1 star because it's still an influential album.
I got 3 songs in but it's just too much. I know this is good metal but even good metal to me still isn't very good. Too angry, too much shouting. The exact opposite of the type of listening experience I'm trying to have. 4.25/10 (2.125/5)
Even though whether something rocks or not is a big part of my evaluation rubric, Metallica rocks and I still hate them. I think it's because they are usually rocking about how mad or frustrated they are - which just isn't something I want to rock about. I want to rock about hot chicks or Lord of the Rings or deaf blind pinball players or even the Devil as a proxy for my frustrations or aggression. I don't want to rock about emotional problems so directly. To me, Metallica is emo for mad dudes. Giving an extra star because Enter Sandman rocks the way I wanna rock.
Meh. Nothing special here. I could understand it feeling a little more cutting edge at the time but I think this is pretty generic and bland as metal goes. Favorite track: N/A Saved songs: Nothing Else Matters
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO enter sandman- 3 sad but true- 3 holier than thou- 3 the unforgiven- 2 or 3 where ever I may roam- 3 don't tread on me- 2 or 3 through the never- more like nether. my bad. 3 nothing else matters- 3 enough I can't do this yall
2/1089 - Not a fan of Hetfield's voice or Metal in general. Can cut 30 seconds off the start of many songs without losing coherence. However, the Enter Sandman riff is cool and the music is overall well produced/competently made. Solos are alright.
Less bad than the previous Metallica albums. Still bad.
Childhood me was excited to listen again. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hold up. I know it’s cultural importance and all that, but this just might be the last time I listen on purpose.
I understand they are a big band and loved by many.... But I struggled to get past the 4th song. Guff.
Never been a Metallica fan :/
Not a fan of Metallica. Saw them at Bonnaroo about 12 years ago. Not my jam. I suppose with a gun to my head this would be the album of theirs that I'd listen to. I did enjoy the reissue they put out a year or two ago with other artists covering tracks from it. Highlights included Jason Isbell's "Sad But True" and Phoebe Bridgers "Nothing Else Matters".
+++ wherever i may roam, of wolf and man --- the unforgiven, nothing else matters i’ve never been in love with metallica’s sound. everything is showy and impressive, but because they have inspired so much and ARE so foundational im a little bored by them because i’ve heard so much of the same thing. despite that, i’ve always loved their lyrics and despite how much i don’t click with the music it is like. objectively impressive. i do enjoy the heavier stuff quite a bit more.
not a fan. Some of the songs were fine but nearly all of them went on a bit too long.
Love Sandman. But rest is ok
not my thang

I do not like metallica
Parts of it just leave me stone cold, others I find just obnoxious. Really, really not for me.
I won't do it. I won't listen to an hour of this. I sat through all of S&M when the generator spit it out. No more, I won't do it. I'll skip through it a bit, that's the best I can offer: Skip Skip Skip Okay, this intro is actually not half bad. Tough-guy solo? Skip Skip Don't tread on me wtf skip Skip Another quiet guitar intro, I like those. Yeah, this one is super famous for a reason. Skip after first chorus. Of wolf and skip The God that skipped Ooh, My Friend of Misery has a nice bass intro. Oh, but other than that it's a SKIP Hyposkip ...aaand we're done. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.
Honestly, it’s a better album than their first album. But I feel like songs can be cut from here to make it better. There are some very skippable and forgettable songs, as well as I think some of their best songs as a group. Overall, I’d probably give it a 2. If some of the filler songs were cut, it’d be a 3
A perfect album for anyone who likes METAL, METAL and nothing but METAL. Other than the lead 3 tracks there is nothing much happening on this album. Give me St. Anger over this any day!
Very repetitive for the most part. I know Metallica are known for a specific sound, but there’s too many songs with little variation to the structure and sound. The hits from this album are classics that I’ve always liked, and I quite liked Of Wolf and Man and My Friend of Misery, but the rest felt very much like filler. Also I don’t think I’ve ever noticed how boring Lars’ drumming is before.
Shocked at how much I prefer this to S&M. Studio Metallica is surprisingly much more my speed compared to live Metallica. Fav Track: The Unforgiven
Trash (BLANEY, Emmet) 1. I tuck you in, warm within, keep you free from sin 2. I’m your pain while you repay 3. Burn your bridges, and build them back with wealth 4. The old man here is me 5. I’ll redefine anywhere, anywhere I roam 6. To secure peace is to prepare for war 7. On through the never we must go 8. Trust I seek and I found in you 9. Chill in the air, cold as steel tonight 10. The healing hand held back by the deepened nail 11. One man’s fun is another’s hell 12. Kicking at a dead horse pleases you
love metal hate metallica i think theyre stupid
Talented but this was a chore to get through
I used to not mind some of the songs on this album, but now without the San Fransisco Symphony they’re just lacking. And even then I don’t want to listen to them all one after the other.
have listened to lots of metallica before. not really a metal guy anymore so this will be interesting. never really liked this album mostly because i don't care for metallica's releases after cliff burton died (not out of some kind of worship for him. just only like the first three), and i used to think the hits from this album like Enter Sandman are super overplayed and i was/am pretty sick to death of them. kind of fucking insane that there's apparently FOUR metallica albums on this list – i'd include maybe three at an absolute stretch. all the songs are in terms of composition good metal songs. james hetfield is a great vocalist. kirk hammett using wah-wah on every solo used to not really irk me much but for some reason this listen through it really started to piss me off — just turn it off for one fucking lick dude please. the way the drums are mixed kind of pisses me off too. the snare sounds like lars is hitting a mattress or something and the cymbals, especially the crash, are just fucking annoying. i guess especially because lars ulrich is pretty indisputably a shit drummer (he used to be good but by this stage in metallica’s career and onwards he definitely is as bad as popular vitriol makes him out to be and he's also a dick). lars makes so many of the songs drag on like borderline snoozefests because it feels like he’s constantly drumming in halftime. his fills (especially on Wherever I May Roam) also SUCK oh my fucking god. WHERE THE FUCK IS THE BASS IN THE MIX?????? the only way they could’ve gotten away with this absolute dogshit sound for a record was because of how notoriously bad And Justice For All’s (the album before this one) mix was. so many of these songs sound totally empty. i guess it’s worth considering this is metallica right as they decide to start pandering to more of a “hard rock” fanbase because they had already achieved most of the commercial success you can really get as a metal band (by releasing 3 [AJFA is composition-speaking a great album with great songs but fuck me what a terrible sounding album] great metal albums beforehand, so worth giving them credit here). not gonna get too into it but while the lyrics are mostly good (Hetfield is a good metal lyricist all around), there’s some fucking trash in here too — Don’t Tread On Me is a blatantly right-wing shitstain lyrically (“love it or leave it”?!!? are you serious cunt) and it’s also probably the worst, laziest, and corniest song on the album in my opinion. on the bright side, broadly great guitar work and vocals. i think i’m harsher on this album than most would be because i never got super into this album (it was probably a lot of millennials’ introduction to metal), so i don’t have any nostalgia to look back on it with. standout track is for sure Nothing Else Matters. also obviously better than the absolute shite metallica put out after this haha. maybe like a 3.5/10 if i'm being generous. sorry. i'll round up to 2/5 when i rate it to make up for it though.
I'm not much of a fan of metal, and though I appreciate the diversion from full-on thrash metal with this album, it hasn't won me over.
still shit
Sad But True
Ok. This one gets a 2 for all the hits.
This album...*sigh* First off let me just say that I HATE Enter Sandman. It's so corny which is a quality amplified by the fact that through most of my life (I'm 39) this song has been the go to for every non-metalhead to act like they're some kind of "wild person". As in, they listen to adult contemporary 90% of the time but they'll let you know that they like to put their hair down sometimes and go a little wild when they put on...Enter Sandman. It's your lame uncle's favorite song and he wants you to know that he likes it so you won't think of him as the lame uncle anymore. That said, I liked this album when I was young and hadn't acquainted myself with the bands 80's work yet. Even then I saw some faults with this album though. Of Wolf and Man always irked me. It's so corny. I never could stand it. The Unforgiven isn't very good either. I actually think part 2 from Reload is much better (fight me) Nothing Else Matters can kick rocks too. The best song on this album in my opinion is Through The Never. It needs more recognition. Wherever I May Roam isn't too bad either. It's easily the most tolerable of the hits. Look, I get why people really like this album. I just think it's really watered down and completely overhyped. I don't have a problem with a band changing their sound some of my favorite bands did it often (Ween and Cave In come to mind) but man, no, I don't want my Metallica sounding like this.
Enter Sandman is a great track and they knew what they were doing by making it the opener. All the rest of this album feels like filler.
There is something soulless about Metallica and I’ve never warmed to them
Nothing that I didn't expect, the singles enter sandman and nothing else matters are welcome breaks as the rest is normal service. The occasional pleasant fret work but the constant thrash and strained vocals were as routine as a quo album.
4/10 - Don't tread on me has the theme from America from West Side Story in it. its a metallica album, it sounds like the rest of them
I guess I’m just gonna go my whole life without ever understanding why people like this
Rated August 4th 2024 It didn't do anything for me. If I had to say something, 'Nothing Else Matters' was my favorite track.
I can understand why this album was so massive and continues to be considered a classic in the metal genre. It just does nothing for me. The drums are always maxed out (on speed and volume), the guitars chug along in much the same way on every song and there's nothing particularly interesting about his voice. I do get it but I'm not feeling it, personally.
The Black Album. Ok. Yeah will Metallica finally break the 3 ceiling? Or will it be another boring album with the occasional banger. This has Sandman on it. Sad But True is alright. Holier Than Thou is boring as fuck. The Unforgiven is melodic and alright. This is an hour long and I need to mow the lawn before it rains. Wherever I May Roam is a good recognisable riff but I'm bored. Don't Tread on Me is another boring one sans good riff. When is Nothing Else Matters on? Next track completely forgettable. Ah good here we go, a decent song. Maybe they've saved all the good ones for the end? Oh, it's finished. Without another notable song. Well, Misery was ok. 2 great songs and 4 alright ones in total. This is worse than Justice for all.
I have a guilty pleasure with this record. I love it, although it is utter pretentious pop gone metal. It is bad though, and I had to suffer Lars Ulrich two times in a festival setting. That was a revelation. I do not think any drum track on this record was close to being played in one take. And the drums just sound shit. Two for the guilty pleasure
It's too clean. Too polished. It's a bit ... whiny? If this is the Devil's music, it's when he's decided to go corporate and do his work from shiny City skyscrapers. Which is probably about right. Enther the Sandman is a great pop record, though.
Wow this sucks
Sigh I really want to like metal. I really want to like Metallica. But man I just do not care. I’ve said this with previous metal albums (Metallica, Iron Maiden), but the stakes are always high with metal. Musically it’s as loud and as intense as it can be. Lyrically it’s all about the end of the world, monsters, dying, descriptions of demons or monsters and why we should be afraid of them, or some combination or derivation thereof. Of course this is an over generalization coming from someone who has now only listened to four complete metal albums in his life. But this is what I’ve heard so far. And I just cannot bring myself to give a damn about it. This album is no different. Even when they do slow it down, lower the stakes musically, and make it less intense on “Nothing Else Matters,” it’s still high stakes because, well, it’s called “Nothing Else Matters.” “Enter Sandman” is the clear winner here. Everyone knows it, it’s transcended metal as a genre and is in the popular culture. It also happens to be the best song on this album, if you ask me. I won’t be seeking out any metal on my own at this point. Which is a bummer because the genre clearly has many talented musicians. If this project hits me with a metal album/band I can get into, great. But at this point I’m starting to get the gist and it just isn’t for me. Two stars. Not even “Enter Sandman” could save this.
Everything sounded like enter sandman, I’m sorry.
They’re talented musicians and good at what they’re going but man are these lyrics dumb af
Partly heard before Saved 3/12 Top track: Enter Sandman
sandman’s coo…
Sounds impressively heavy. Besides the hits, not much here.
I loved Enter Sandman as a ten year old.
Heavy mehtal so dull.
Not their best work
Not my thing. Far too long.
On its own merits it's not bad at all. But ranked against their first three, and even Justice, it's pretty weak. It sounds exactly like a record produced by a guy named Bob Rock should sound.
Listening to this kind of music just makes me angry. Conjures up images of sweaty white men with their tongues out and I hate them all.
Not for me
I never understood this group or the fanatical fan base they have. Most of this is plodding, noisy junk that is not fun to listen to. Lyrics seem lame. Enter Sandman I know and is kinda OK, and a couple of other slower songs were decent. Not my jam.
Metallica are at that precise point on the spectrum where my tolerance starts to diminish. Rapidly. And it took me four "sittings" to get through this. Yes, an uber-chunky sound with pounding ryhthm and riffs that sound like they were played on a steam locomotive. Sadly, this often results in a rather plodding sound, albeit with the occasional respite ("Sandman" is alright but the lyrics are just plain daft). Elsewhere, "Don't tread on me" is silly (unless I'm missing some kind of irony). Some stuff would work very well at Guantanamo (what's that? It did.....?).
I've been told that this is the Revolver, the Beggar's Banquet, the Who's Next, the Led Zeppelin IV of heavy metal. I don't see it.
My first ever listen to Metallica. I actually enjoyed the album a lot more than I thought I would. Enter Sandman was great, I also enjoyed sad but true. After a few tracks though it turned into what I would call wrestling music! I think the unforgiven is a great example of that Favourite song: Enter Sandman Least favourite: The unforgiven. Album artwork: dark!!!
Hmmmmmm, not really my type
Not their best album by a long shot. Sure, Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, and Nothing Else Matters can ramp you up, but that's 3 out of 12 They have MUCH better albums, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets...
This album is really overrated. There was some ok stuff on the back half but mostly I found it boring. Metal should hit hard, and this doesn't
Me no likee metal. There are more tuneful and mellifluous albums to spend my time listening to.
I had to listen to six ads before I got to a single repetitive note. Metallica were sellouts from the start.
All of this is the same. How do you make multiple songs that are 6+ minutes still sound the same. Favorite Tracks: Through the Never, Enter Sandman
Much like Metallica's career, almost every track on this album starts off interesting, overstays it's welcome, then eventually fades out without a proper ending. Enter Sandman is one of the greatest rock songs of all time, but the whole thing falls off a cliff right after. Sad But True kind of rocks, but it's so corny and again just overstays. I have no idea how Nothing Else Matters is a single. I found it so trite even if it was a welcome contrast to the rest of the heavy heavy riffs.
not for me - but 'nothing else matters' slaps
I felt like most of these songs sounded the exact same. If I’m feeling angsty, a couple of these songs might hit, but I don’t have much desire to listen to the rest of that album again. Enter Sandman was my fave.
Metallica on yllättävän tylsää musaa. Tasaisen tappavaa ajoa, mutta ei onnistu innostamaan. 2/5
Best Song: Enter Sandman. Maybe the only track on this album that actually rocks. Also I used to say that "Now I lay me down to sleep" prayer when I was a kid, so it's got some nostalgia going for it. Worst Song: Wherever I May Roam. Classic Metallica: Overly long, slow, and meandering. Overall: My metal hot take will always be that Metallica is hugely overrated. So ploddingly slow for a band that was so heavily marketed as "thrash". It feels like music that's best suited for toddler-stomping in a wide circle. Music for people who unironically view throwing up "devil horns" as a form of counterculture.
ok now they’re just trolling us. this is the 4th metallica album. are 5% of the songs you have to hear before you die from one band?
Well. Tight sounds, crunchy guitar, juvenile songs. Sonically it's great, can appreciate the quality, but it just sounds formulaic. Perhaps they invented the formula - I don't know and I don't care, it's just tedious.
Some great intros and then the same tediously drawn out sound failing to reach a climax
The only reason this isn’t a 1 is because of Enter Sandman.
Not for me
Couple classic songs in Sandman and Nothing Else Matters but the rest is forgettable.
Pas tant mon genre, un peu lourd
Nostalgic but boring.
Album #12 I never understood the draw to Metalica that many of my classmates had back in the day. I still don't but I listened to this album entirely. I was impressed that I could understand the lyrics for the most part and it wasn't just a bunch of screaming men stroking their guitars and drum sets in a violent manner. I often see that the song 'Enter the Sandman" is listed as one of the best songs of all time, I don't see it or hear it. They weren't my cup of tea in the 80's and still aren't. I am glad that someone is drawn to their music, why, I have no clue.
not my jam, forgot to rate before but probably downloaded a song or two
No thank you
kinda long
I found myself getting more and more angry through each track - not because I hated the album or anything like that, it was just the style of m,usic is so abrasive and angry it just rubbed off on me. As you can probably tell, not my bag at all, but giving it 2 stars as I made it the whole way through.
Not my cup of tea, but there's some interesting musical motifs throughout. Weird reference to West Side Story in 'Don't tread on me' that felt both really on the nose and clumsily executed. Most songs are way too long, don't really have much purpose in being as bloated as they are. I still recognize the impact this album has had in music generally and in the metal genre specifically. 2/5
Some memorable tracks from my music listening past. Some 'oh god, its the same noise over and over and over again' with no idea about the lyrics. a bit Meh. Not shocking but meh. 2 stars
The Unforgiven // Wherever I May Roam //
Metallica hasn't ever really been my thing, but there are a few songs that I've had from here that I'll continue to keep in rotation
Very thoughtful lyrics, but generally just loud, roaring unrest and angst against the “they.”
"Nottingham else matters" gefällt mir ja sehr gut - aber der Rest ist wirklich nicht mein Geschmack
This is not my choice of music but I did listen to it. Some of the songs were better than others but I probably will not listen to any of them again.
Wasn’t a fan. Thought all the songs blended together and lacked variation.
I honestly tried to like this album despite my dad’s strong hatred for the band. Started off strong with the first one just because I know of it and its impact on the world (and Riveras song) but honestly his voice is just so painful so try to deal with. I miss rock and this is definitely it so I’ll give it that, but definitely not a great one.
not my thing, songs too long
Metal metal metal! After a while it all sounds the same.
I don't have anything specifically against Metallica, but this album really just plods on compared to their earlier stuff that I'm more familiar with. Spotify also has me listening to a "remastered" version which I suspect is mostly a louder/more compressed edition, so that doesn't make it any easier to listen to.
I don't own nor have any desire to own an Ibanez guitar.
Eh. Enter Sandman is a classic but the energy feels a little off for me. A lot of mid tempo/slower jams that don't hit as hard as ride the lightning or master of puppets style songs.
Perhaps if I had been 16 when this album came out, I would’ve liked it. Not sure it would’ve been a favorite even then. However, I was 31 when this came out. I had a wife, 2 kids, a solid start on a career. I just didn’t have the testosterone driven anger at the world, that this seems to call upon. And I’m good with that. I’ll go 2/5, just for “Enter Sandman” is a very good song, I do own that one. But don’t listen to it very often. 2/5
Just doesn’t do it for me today.
Holier Than Thou - Beetje te heftig The Unforgiven - Minder heftig, beter dan vorige nummers Wherever I May Roam - Weer beetje hetzelfde, iets te heftig. 1.8/5
I don't want to LISTEN TO THIS ANYMOaoRE-a-uh! thruggadugchugdugdug thuggadugchug its place in historeeeea-uh is unmisTAKEable YEAH but I don't want to HEAR IT A-UH-GAIIIINNNNN! YEAH! meedley meawuuuuh bree a wreauh mreeeeuuwwww thruggaduggachuggachugchgchgchg music: hated. (⌐■_■)
Not really my bag. There are some great songs on hear, but most of these songs felt twice as long as they should be
Holy shit this album is boring. High school loser party album.
2/5
The album starts with good energy, but quickly loses steam. It gets dull pretty fast, and by the end it feels like it's the same drum line on repeat with generic guitar riffs.
Not for me, although 'Sad But True' & ' Holier Than Thou' sound okay and have nice lyrics
Au début j’étais impressionnée que ça aille aussi hard, pis rendu à la moitié je me suis fait chier fake j’ai écouté Rage Against the Machine à la place
Apparently you need to give a child a new food stuff between 12 and 30 times for them to accept it. I don’t know how many times I’ve listened to Metallica but I still can’t accept it. I’ll tell you when I get to 31 because obviously then I’m gonna love them. Just not now.
1 hour and 5 minutes is, by any measure, an unhealthy amount of James Hetfield. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater. He's an astounding rhythm guitarist. And his delivery of the line, "Hush little baby, don't say a word," is comedy gold. I'm just trying to urge moderation. So kids: If you want to listen to this album, do so in three-song increments. In between doses, take a half-hour break. Go for a walk. Listen to Taylor Swift or The Beatles. Remind yourself that joy exists. Following this advice will make your listening experience much more powerful... and no one will get hurt in the process.
I appreciate Stranger Things use of Enter Sandman even more now that I made it halfway through this album. Maybe there is real musicianship in this band but I won't ever truly know b/c I hit play and start thinking about Beavis & Butthead and how much adolescent boys stink and I don't understand any lyrics and the din just makes me f'in crazy.
2.5 I just don’t like Metallica
My least favorite Metallica album
Long, drawn out, repetitive, and angsty. The same guitar tone, same gruff vocals, the same up-down stroke riffs in the same minor keys. Really not sure what's going on here that others hear. Other then having "Metal" in the name, what's cool about this?
"Never opened myself this way. Life is ours, we live it our way. All these words I don't just say. And nothing else matters." --- Favourite Tracks: Enter Sandman Summary: I tried to keep an open mind with this as it's definitely not to my usual tastes, I knew of Enter Sandman going in which I didn't mind, but from there it all felt very repetitive and one note. I'm sure it was very influential and clearly has a massive fan base, but it's just not for me - the highlight was when my headphones interrupted the album to tell me the battery was low.
p676. 1991. 1.5 stars. Lumpy, plodding Spinal Tap for the 90s, but with an irony bypass. Definitive proof that one classic song does not make an essential album. Bonus point for Enter Sandman.
too metal for my taste
For my taste, I just can't get into how angry this album gets although I am a fan of the slower songs. Standouts include Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, and Nothing Else Matters.
The most boring metal in the world. Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman are undeniable classics. The rest, not so much. And I just can't stand picturing the people listening to this, and REALLY liking it. I don't exactly know why, but listening to this album feels like carrying a skateboard by the trucks. You think you're cool, but everyone with the same interest looks at you with disgust. 3 Metallica might be the most overrated band of all time. Master of Puppets is good though. 2
I loved Enter Sandman. Do not know the rest of this album & what with Easter & all, & having once watched that doco where this lot took themselves so seriously it made me double-upwith laughter, I have no time or desire to listen to it now. Two stars.
Too discordant for me
Besides their two biggest hits, nothing else mattered here. Perhaps heavy metal doesn't really fit the vibe I'm going for as I write a history essay while wearing low-rise jeans and a paisley head-scarf. It was a lot of nothing really.
I got two words for you: Mariano. Rivera. grrrrrrrr Mondays.
Uninventive drumming, riffs, solos. Repetitive with some okay parts.
3.6 - Spectacular guitar work. “Nothing Else Matters” is symphonic. “Enter Sandman” creates a dark, nightmarish soundscape. I’m less wild about Hedfield’s grunty vocals. And I dislike Ulrich’s drumming on here - simplistic and splashy. I also felt exhausted by this record’s plodding pace, especially towards the end of the hour.
4/10
2/12, 17%
Enter Sandman is great but after that it's slow-paced metal with super boring drums.
No reason to have this instead of Ride the Lightning on such a list.
dun dun a dun
I hate Metallica. Their earlier albums were irritating, this is just boring one-note ponderous tedium. The singer sucks, the lyrics are amateur schoolboy crap, and the production sounds better with the '90s Phil Collins material it was developed for. Please no more from these shitheads
Well you know what the ones I knew I quite enjoyed listening to but on the whole a bit of a slog. Enter Sandman is a banger. I can appreciate that this is a tight album and I get why it is popular, with those inclined but just so could not listen to this on the regs.
Oh I just was not in the mood for this one.
Metallica always had the potential to be a seriously good act, but they couldn't evolve past their caveman machismo. While some songs are strong (Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven), there's too much grunting, and growling... it's a musical version of Tim Allen's Tool Time from Home Improvement. This is taken to the ultimate point of self-caricature in the "ballad" "Nothing Else Matters." The video featured them playing this tender ballad through snarls and sneers. Lars Ulrich beat the drums like they killed his dog while Hetfield sang, "So close, no matter how far, couldn't be much more from the heart..." Very Spinal Tap-esque :D
Most of these songs could be 2 or 3 minutes long. I remember loving this album like 15 years ago, but now, yeesh. These songs just go on and on and on. What the hell was Metallica thinking?
It’s just guitar and noise and it’s all in the same cord
I knew this album was gonna be corny as soon as I saw the gadsden flag on the cover. Some decent songs though. I like their other material better.
As much as I love Enter Sandman, I found the rest of these very samesy and boring.
Maybe I'm a biased trash but I really think this album lacks the punch and attitude that made me tolerate and sometimes appreciate metallica in favor of nonchalant cock/butt rock all you can eat extravaganza. Sad But True and Wherever I May Roam are pretteh slick bangers tho. Rest is kinda meh, please shut the fuck up about The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters, I don't really give a shit. I believe The God That Failed was good? Can't remember so idfk.
2 good songs, but even they could have done with tightening up time wise. Lots of dull shite. Metal that is not speed metal just seems dreary to me.
This is the crossover Metallica record, and there are good moments, but this loses a lot of what made Metallica special for me.
Not a particularly exciting album. A couple of good songs which make the remainder sound like filler. And the remastered edition is stupidity bright!
This is the album that ruined Metallica for me.
Would listen to again: Not a chance Rating of each song: 1)6/10 2)4/10 3)4/10 4)8/10 5)5/10 6)4/10 7)4/10 8)7/10 9)4/10 10)4/10 11)4/10 12)3/10
Too many solos, too few tunes.
not for me
Not bad, but it's not the type of music I like.
4/10. Started off well enough, but over the course of an hour it starts to feel samey and even rather boring
Enter, Sandman. Then leave before you have to listen to the rest of the album.
i do not like metal nothing else matter is a jam however the guitar is the most recognizable shit ive ever heard overall pretty repetitive, formulaic the most MURICA FUCK YEA FREEDOM lyrics ive heard not really great
Couple of bangers but couldn't get into the rest.
The same song, repeated again and again.
My problem with Metallica is Lars Ulrich. If you compare their breakout album, Master of Puppets, to Slayer's Reign in Blood, it is obvious that Dave Lombardo swings while Ulrich can only plod. In fact, I have suggested that an Ulrich be the measurement of absolute mediocrity which achieves great success. Henry Rollins would be half an Ulrich.
Maybe I just didn't get it, but this album just sounds painfully cheesy to me. Nothing in this album sounded particularly remarkable or influential, especially since this was "the last good Metallica album." Not very challenging or interesting to my ears. Felt like very entry level metal music. Maybe it's because I don't listen to a lot of metal music, but I know that I prefer Boris, Uniform, or ISIS over this album in particular.
Not my vibe at all, Listen to it because of this challenge... I understand why it's popular, but that's not for me..
I was a latecomer to the Metallica party, invited to their head banger ball with this LP. Prior to 'Metallica,' Metallica was an underground thrash metal band with an extremely rabid and loyal fan base. All that came to a crashing end with this LP, a massive seller, with the smash hit ‘Enter Sandman’ even receiving radio airplay- a sure fire way to really piss of thrash metal fans. Metallica’s die-hard fans hated this LP, and its popularity. What is it about metal heads (and punks) that causes them to they stop liking bands when they become popular? Anyway, 'Metallica' still found Metallica thrashing with the same fervor before on ‘Holier Than Thou,’ ‘Through the Never,’ and the album’s scorching closer, ‘The Struggle Within.’ Musically, if you like this genre (and I do), it is quite enjoyable. And if you dig the extra heavy, (and I do): ‘Sad But True,’ ‘The God That Failed,’ and ‘My Friend of Misery,’ the latter featuring a terrific duo harmonic guitar solo by James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett ala Thin Lizzy, followed by Kirk shredding it up himself, wah wah pedal to the metal. And, then there are the two numbers Metallica’s prior fans loathed the most: ‘Unforgiven,’ and ‘Nothing Else Matters.’ Undeniably, not thrash, but not bad either. I really liked this LP when it was released, being a still relatively young age of 31. Wore the cassette(!) right out. And I resonated with it not only on a musical, but a lyrical level, too. Because just like James Hetfield, I too was emotionally stunted, further exacerbated by alcohol (and drugs when I could get them, which in rural, far North East Texas in 1991 was next to impossible.) It’s always interesting to read the random comments people post about music, and most folks seemed to agree that ‘The Struggle Within’ is concerned with the suffering a self-defeating personality brings upon oneself. Very Buddhist, although I doubt Metallica’s fans have any truck with that. Buddhists are too non-violent. ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ kinda punches the Buddha right in the face. However, there was one smart ass who commented that ‘The Struggle Within’ is about constipation! Typical juvenile scatological humor. And, sometimes, that ‘shit’ is funny. But the commentator actually stumbled upon a truth that I suspect James and I share: the lack of appropriate and consistent mentoring by our parents, particularly in the area of responding maturely to the disappointments encountered in one’s life. One could label this as emotional constipation, and I suffered from this for years, inadvertently causing great harm to myself and my marriage. Thankfully, with help, and lot of ongoing work on my part, my emotional age is finally beginning to catch up with my chronological age. Hetfield is only four years my junior, so I sincerely hope that he’s making similar progress. I do know that for years, he self-medicated with alcohol (Metallica used to refer to themselves as Alcoholica), and as of a few years ago apparently got that under control. Lyrically, there’s really nothing here for anyone over the age of, let’s say, 18. Just a lot of self-loathing and/or blaming and judgment of others for one’s problems (organized religion being an obvious and easy target, particularly for metal), unwillingness to forgive, violent retribution, etc. On the second, and super heavy track, ‘Sad But True,’ Hetfield’s completely untamed, unrestrained ego has completely overpowered his (holy) spirit with (unholy) thoughts of forever being a victim to one’s past, the future being already determined by one’s regrets and fear, etc. Sad, but true, Hetfield laments. And that makes me sad to hear it. I’ve been sad too much for too long already. I much prefer being happy. That’s my new truth. Loved 'Metallica' back in the day. Appreciate it for what it is today, musically. But I don’t really care to listen to it anymore. There are other, wiser, and actually more helpful selections of metal to bang my head to today that bring a smile to my face.
Wasn’t as painful to listen to as some metal but just found it boring
Yeah don't like metal etc
I know Metallica fans would literally kill me for saying this, but I just don't think they're very good. I can see why teenage boys with too much excess testosterone like them, but I find their music boring, their lyrics trite, and James Hetfield snarling his way through the vocals gets old pretty quickly. 2 stars.
As with a number of other bang average bands, metallica - and this album - is hugely overrated.
Not really my thing. After i got through the songs I knew, it was a real slog.
In some ways I like this better than Metallica's thrash era, but in a lot of ways I don't. I honestly want to give this a 1, but just looking through my rankings, this slots in between some very low 2s. Just know that it's disliked. This album is the godfather of butt rock, and it really feels ugly to listen to. Sad But True always reminds me of the time it came on the modern rock radio station while I was sitting in the parking lot, waiting for a friend to get out his meeting with his parole officer while I was incredibly hungover so we could go score some meth afterwards. It might have been the perfect song to encapsulate that ugly moment in my life. I hate this album for the music it influenced and for the aura it exudes... but I suppose it is better than all of the albums I gave a 1 to and a small handful of the albums I gave a 2 to. Maybe I just need to re-evaluate my scale and be a little bit more liberal with my 1s.
Curious about this one. But ultimately it disappoints. it aspires to be epic but apart from a few singles it is quite forgettable. I listened a few times but inevitably it became background to whatever I was doing. Cover art 1/5
As a delicate young man who spent puberty straining to achieve a moustache, I can find nothing to simulate sweat, hair, muscle and all-round machismo more than Metallica. Their self-titled finds them at their commercial and critical zenith, surrendering the thrashy inclinations of their early work for something slicker, more considered, more polished. Against this framework- and indeed the alternative rock and grunge that was blowing up at the time- it sounds crisp, bright, all glossy guitars and HD drums. Although it sounds like fans of the band lamented Metallica as sell-outs in 1991, 30 years on this album seems to be associated with "pure rock", authenticity, a landmark in metal. After sitting through it a couple of times, I just can't get on board. Instrumentally, the band do a fine job. Lars Ulrich's drums sound fantastic, Kirk Hammett's solo in "Holier than Thou" is compelling listening, and even Jason Newsted gets a couple of moments in the sun. It's easy to imagine these songs going down a storm live, with opener "Enter Sandman" practically imploring any listener to bellow along at the top of their lungs. The opening is a tempest, with the syncopated riff slinking in around the hi-hat, slowly erupting into volcanic sound with a power-house guitar line and signature chorus. For a moment it's enjoyable, electrifying, exhilarating... but then the next song shoots for the same thrill. And the next. And so on for just over an hour. My issue with this album- and other metal albums I've heard on the list so far- is that I just can't connect emotionally. Regardless of the depth of feeling that would have been put into this, I don't get any catharsis on listening: no sense of release, no fury or rage. I just hear Hetfield and Hammett shitting fat riffs for the sake of fat riffs, ranking the work on the strength of the headbanging it could produce. "Nothing Else Matters" at least has some semblance of a stronger emotion: regret, loss, love, it is stripped right back to an opening riff on open strings before an orchestral arrangement kicks in. It's the most ambitious the album gets and its all the better for it. "The Unforgiven" was another favourite, because it actually breaks the sonic mould a little: there's an acoustic solo, some more minimal keyboard work, a nice change of pace and a fun "Western" theme. It's atmospheric and foreboding without having to launch straight into an obligatory grinding riff or howling vocal. It's a shame we don't hear Metallica pushing the envelope in this way again for the rest of the album: instead, all melodies and nuance are abandoned for the sake of "heaviness" and bravado. The songs feel designed to be churned out in a stadium to mosh-pits and beer-bellied baldies. The lyrics are turgid, awkward nonsense: "And the road becomes my bride; I have stripped of all but pride; So in her I do confide". It's forced, generic and trying so hard to be dark and tormented that thank god most listeners won't be paying attention to them. Bar the singles where things briefly get interesting, I can find very little to enjoy in "Metallica" and I won't be hurrying to hear it again.
retro city.
Clean production but it’s the same song over and over. Not for me.
Again tried to enjoy but didn’t - appreciate others would enjoy and music made with heart
Another Metallica album that isn't bad, just not a style of music I can appreciate too much. I felt this was a little more enjoyable compared to Master of Puppets, though. I can see how it would be appealing to other people, but just not my cup of tea. 4/10
Definitely not my favorite, but it has its merits. There are a couple songs on here I genuinely like but overall I find James Hetfield's voice to be grating and the lyrics to be overwrought. 2.5/5 stars
Nah
Not for me
Honestly, I did not have high expectations going into this album. I have never understood the fuss over Metallica, who are just a metal band. I have always imagined that Metallica would resuly if you were to devise the most generic metal band of all. So, I've never had any interest in exploring Metallica. And this album is... a standard metal album. That's it. It's not noticably bad nor noticably good. It is the most average metal album conceivable. Boilerplate, passable, run-of-the-mill, middle-of-the-road metal. They should have nicknamed this the Grey Album. Well, there are some points worthy of comment. Firstly, Enter Sandman is a very silly song. Call me a purist, but I don't think a metal song should have a chorus that ends, "We're off to Never-Neverland." Is that meant to be terrifying? Was he threatening to take his kids to Michael Jackson's ranch? Still, the lyrics originally referred to cot death, so I think we should be thankful for what we got. Secondly, the album occasionally alludes to other pieces of music, the odd snippet of melody, that sort of thing. Sampling Morricone's Ecstasy of Gold on The Unforgiven is acceptable. Opening a song with West Side Story's America steers the album into self-parody. So, the only time the album avoids being average is when it's risible. Finally, the effect of the album's style is counterproductive. The heaviness of the album isn't unsettling or invigorating; it's blank and quite deadening. The songs are overlong and the lyrics are insipid, so the listener is just bored. They should have nicknamed this the Grey Album.
Apart from a few songs, I've always found Metallica to be musically uninteresting, and it's the same here.
Just never been a Metallica fan!
iugh
Maybe I'd enjoy this more if it hadn't been played to death on the radio. I never need to hear "Enter Sandman" again in my life. Metallica takes themselves far too seriously to be anything other than an embarrassing joke.
Ah, als Metallica Pop, bzw. Stadion gingen. Gibts da was miss zu verstehen? Hetfields immer gleich Stimme muss man mögen.
godt håndværk, men lidt for rocket
3 decent songs and a bunch of chugging guitar filler. Was waiting for it to be over.
Not a fan. A few decent riffs here and there, but I find the tracks quite bland and uninteresting. For me, a lot of the tracks from this record are not too far removed from Nickelback. High praise indeed! Boring, uninspired drum parts, and the actual drum sound is pretty terrible - overpowers the mix and is abrasive. Kirk needs to lay off the wah pedal. Prefer their thrashier, heavier stuff, though still not by much.
Not my thing.
I've been dying to have a platform to say this for a long time: Enter Sandman is a dumb song. There's a reason why a good half of existing Metallica fans bailed after this album. Call me when Ride The Lightning is on.
could it be? is it this one? was this the album to get me in to metal licker and modern metal? not really. it was way less offensive than previous listens to them but it didn't really get my juices going. all in all i think its pretty fuckin cheesy.
Kinda a grueling hour-long listen. An album pretty much carried by its singles (which, in the case of Sandman and Nothing Else Matters, are pretty damn good), but everything else blends together. If it was 20 min shorter, it might have been more bearable, but I can't listen to this whole thing without zoning out. Low 2
I was recently watching Jeopardy reruns and the prompt was "The Big 4 of thrash metal are Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth and this quartet with a murderous name". Anyone who knows the answer gets an iTunes gift card good for downloading The Black Album (and replacing the mp3s they got for free off Limewire). When it popped up on 1001 I thought "this is not what I'm looking for on this Friday morning". When Sandman kicked into gear I was psyched up-ah. Somewhere between Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters I was tenderized into a trance-ah. The last third of the album was a tune out-ah. They're doing their thing. C-
Production: 6/20 Songwriting: 3/20 Innovation: 5/20 Bangers: 5/20 Emotional response: 4/20 =23 only reason they didn’t get one star is that I can’t deny that Enter Sandman is a banger. The rest of it was a load of old bollocks.
Soft rock metallica. I prefer the heavy stuff
Played half of this album in my high school band and I'm heartily sick of it. Metallica are a band that just never got my blood pumping.
I thought a popular thrash metal band would have a bit more umph to their sounds, I was quite underwhelmed
Dull
Some classic singles from childhood, but metal has never been my thing. Lead vocals sound the same in every song
A couple of standout songs with enter sandman, nothing else matters, and sad but true. Other songs felt very similar and like filler material.
this wasn’t for me was kinda bored🐍
Enter Sandman is very funny imo
Seems fine. Not my style of music at all.
1hr 2mins of basically the same track over and over again. They're like the Oasis of Heavy Metal (Or Oasis are the Metallica of Brit Pop). Find sound, keep sound, bore the shit out of people.
llegué hasta god that failed.
Oh god no!!! Awful.
Nope
Yeah, this is not my jam. Much like Master of Puppets, I got bored fast here. Same old mid tempo chug, predictable drums, same guitar solo cut and pasted throughout. Oh, and sometimes it gets quiet and acoustic! Wow! I just don't get the appeal. Enter Sandman is alright, the rest is utterly forgettable. 1/5
No thanks.
No sabría por dónde empezar...
Oh wow I didn't know they kept going after ride the lighting, too bad cause I love that one. The drums suck bad. Like bad bad....does Lars drum with kitchen whisks or something? Why does it sound like a bunch of mice are breaking tiny glasses in unison? And did ayn rand write these lyrics? Man I hated this how did it win a grammy
technically dnf idk wasn’t good
I expected to have a stronger reaction to this but it was just super boring
Too classic I grew up and developed my tastes on people who were inspired by metallica and made it better
No me gusta Metallica y nunca me va a gustar.
Rock isnt really my jam
Pretentious metal group.
A fellow student in college love this bad. She put up posters around her studio desk. Could never understand their appeal at the time. But, I did learn to appreciate their role in heave metal. Still can't stand their songs...
Don't like Metallica, don't like metalikos fanai
this is like a funny joke after my last review lol. i feel the same about metallica as i do about def leppard although to a lesser extent. it’s just commercial noise with no meaning or substance. metal is just apolitical punk. it’s shit.

Metallica (1991), known as ‘The Black Album’ is the fifth studio album by Metallica. Although I’m aware of Metallica, I’ve never knowingly listened to any of their albums. For whatever reason I’ve never really felt any affinity with Heavy Metal music. I’d obviously heard ‘Enter Sandman’ before but the rest of the singles, and the album itself completely passed me by in 1991. It’s got a run-time of over an hour so I have to admit that I didn’t give it the customary three listens, I think I made it to about one and a half before giving up. Obviously as I’m not familiar with their previous albums I can’t compare this with what came before, but I read that this was a turning point where they moved away from their previous thrash metal sound into something more refined. My ears are obviously not attuned to what a more refined metal sound is as this, as far as I’m concerned, was still an hour of an angry man shouting at me. Life is too short for that. I read someone describe it as music to bench-press to, and maybe that’s why its not for me. I think I’m in the minority though as apparently the album is a worldwide best seller. Side A: 1. Enter Sandman - 2/5 2. Sad But True - 1/5 3. Holier Than Thou - 1/5 Side B: 1. The Unforgiven - 1/5 2. Wherever I May Roam - 1/5 3. Don’t Tread On Me - 1/5 Side C: 1. Through the Never - 1/5 2. Nothing Else Matters - 2/5 3. Of Wolf and Man - 1/5 Side D: 1. The God That Failed - 1/5 2. My Friend Of Misery - 1/5 3. The Struggle Within - 1/5
Boring. Nothing Ever Happens.
I have never taken speed
Stupid kids banging on guitars pretending they are 14 again. Fuck off. Wankers.
21/02/2026 1. enter sandman - guitar is nice i guess? technically good, just not for me :/ seems very long... not a good start for an album that's just over an hour. 2. sad but true - not a fan. just figured out i've been listening to this album on shuffle, so if the writing seems a bit disjointed, it's because it's not actually the order i listened in!!! 3. holier than thou - nothing more to say lol. sounded exactly the same as the rest of the songs. 4. the unforgiven - same as prev. cannot wait for this to be over... 5. wherever i may roam - like the guitar at start... sounds a bit orientalist though.... not a fan of the riff after it gets loud though. 6. don't tread on me - america!!!! not american so i couldn't care less. even if it's ironic, considering what the singer has said about the use of his music in torture at guantanamo bay, it doesn't come off great. 7. through the never - this is more what i was thinking when this album showed up. somehow it's gotten worse from the earlier songs! 8. nothing else matters - obviously metal, but sounds more toothless and mainstream than any of the other metal albums this has made me listen to? really boring.... 9. of wolf and man - boring.... 10. the god that failed - bass is nice at the start. shame about the rest of the song. 11. my friend of misery - this bloody album is misery... 12. the struggle within - so glad this is over!!! did not like this at all, metal is absolutely not for me, not spending any more time on this.
God, I struggled to listen to this, not for me
Nope another overrated band....0-2 so far smh
not my thing
I was surprised at just how much I disliked this. It tries so hard to be big and epic but ends up sounding like a whole load of nothing. No feeling, no emotion, nothing that invokes any sort of reaction at all. It all sounds the same and it all sounds like nothing.
Ugh. Enter Sandman is cool. Some good instrumentals. But couldn't wait to get through this one. Because I'm behind on daily listening, I can see that I have ANOTHER Metallica album up next. I hope I like it more.
Shitty drummer don't like the singing style
This album is too loud oh god turn it down shit it’s still too loud oh god so loud turn it down oh my god 3/5
Ye-uh
Absolute dross mostly. Heavy plodding and Nothing Else Matters as the ballad. Not a fan of the singing. Whenever a track started off more promisingly it soon deteriorated. Usually when vocals started. Sad but true. Which coincidentally was probably the worst track, though lots of competition. Hard to get through it all, Struggle Within indeed. 1. Enjoyed Sepultura more.
Before: "Metallica" by Metallica. I'm assuming this was their debut? I was never a fan. The closest thing to metal that I liked back then was Ministry, who were one of my favorite bands back in the day. In fact "The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste" would definately be in my 1001 albums list, and probably be in my 101 albums list. Alas, it's not in this list. So let's get started with Metallica. During: "Enter Sandman", yep, I don't like this. Too simple, formulaic, and totally uninteresting. Ministry is not really like this at all. OK, maybe just a little, but it is reminding me of White Zombie who I did like a lot for a brief period in the early nineties, but they were groove metal. OMG, "Sad But True" is even worse. After: I mostly listened to the album while I was doing other stuff and skipped through several tracks. I don't care for this style of music and I don't like this album as a whole. It's very simple and boring. Apparently it was their fifth album. Looks like I'll have three more opportunities to listen to them. I get it they were very influential but I have to give this one star.
noooooo day 3 of this challenge noooooooooo I hate this shit so much. It's the one genre/type of music I can't even force myself to see the merit of. It's just noise to me. I don't like it. Big no from me.
might get into this genre later!
