Reviews (page 13 of 14)
It's interesting. First song sounds like someone with psychosis singing along to the sound of tipping a bucket of clock springs and tin cans downstairs. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Then I heard some bleep bloops and thought.. Eno must be involved. I checked wikipedia, and he was. It starts making sense. I don't mind weird production like this, I don't have a fear of this sort of music. That being said, Crosseyed and Painless is forgettable, it sounds like background music from a 90s kart racing game for the playstation. It's got interesting guitar. On a repeated listen it holds up better. The Great Curve is like, it's fine? But there isn't really much to it. The runtime was too long for what it was and it was immediately forgettable. Once in a lifetime is amazing. 10/10. The only song on the album that is so far worth the hype. Houses in motion is boring. It's kind of funky but ultimately goes nowhere. Seen and not seen is atmospheric and artsy but again, boring. This is a boring album with one good song. I hope it picks up. I guess I just don't like Talking Heads. Bummer. This album is so boring, when it's not being repetetive and staccato boring, it's being dirgey atmospheric boring. The last 2 songs were a slog to get through. I just didn't get any enjoyment from them, nothing happened, they started boring and maintained the boringness without any development for the entire unnecessarily long, bloated, padded track lengths. This album has Once in a lifetime and Born under the punches, and apart from those two gems, the rest of it is pretentious, boring, looped, monotonous, filler. Disappointing. I thought I would enjoy this more but I am thoroughly unimpressed.
It’s too much going on Idk I could’ve liked it but it’s not an easy listen
I'm in the minority, but this is easily my least favorite Talking Heads album. Eno's production is heavy handed and the infusion of Afrofunk leaves you with a record that sounds nothing like anything in their discography. It may be a critical darling but there's a reason why it's their worst selling album.
It was mid
Mostly noise only 1b good song
good as background music, but not my cup of tea
what a weird album
Not Ford me
too busy
Okayish but not great
Somehow the music by this band goes right over my head.
once in a lifetime is goated but this shit is too grating to listen to for 40mins
Some hits some misses on this
I do not like this album other than Once In A Lifetime. Otherwise, this album is forgettable to me.
I know this. This is the one where every track is based on a repeated riff or groove, right? The question is, is the music any good? Sometimes.
like but a little boring
Not a bad background music or a movie soundtrack, but not something I would have put on and listen to on a daily basis 🙃
sucks
It’s ok, one great song on board
Thought id enjoy this more to be honest, honestly fairly dull.
Baffled as to how this is so highly regarded Best Song: Once in a Lifetime Rating: 4/10 Stars: 2
Days Go By is okay but otherwise not great
No fue de mi agrado
weird stuff
Not really my jam. Was just background noise for me.
This is my second Talking Heads. I didn't like the first. This one's a bit better, but overall, it confirmed that I'm no Talking Heads-head. The album is listenable, but it never lifts off for me. Even the "big hit" is something I felt a subtle urge to skip through half way.
I don’t know. Talking heads has some good work but this was not for me at all.
Did not go through full album as it sounded monotonous
Kinda interesting, but also kinda boring....idk man. I zoned out. Listening wind reminded me of Gorillaz which is nice ig. Overall, forgettable
How can they create such a masterpiece like a Talking in your sleep and then this is the rest of their discography. This is the second album by them I am listening to, that was recommended to me by this app and I don't see why it is here. It's just mid if not bad.
Nice Album. Some things I liked, some things I would never want to listen to again.
1.7/5 Not sure what the hype is about this album. I found it pretty boring and only the hit single was half decent.
Bored with this sound
:3
2.5
Not really my style.
Feels very much of its time. Not for me
Whatever
Not my cup of tea
It was fun. I like this better than the last one!
This may be harsh but it seems to me that for each song, they find a riff, play it to death, David Byrne adds some random words and a few yelps, and then they move on. I'm no musician, I could be terribly and quite unreasonably wrong, but hey, what if I'm right?
Like the one sone that made it famous, the rest are forgettable.
Mediocre
It’s was okay. Interesting first pick.
Not good
Ikkje så stor Talking Heads-fanboy
Not my cup of tea
Very meh. One good song because it's famous.
Once in a Lifetime and Listen to the Wind are fabulous, but the rest of the collection feels like it's coming from a different and less accessible place A recurring theme for me with TH albums Okay
Once in a Lifetime - Pretty Good I enjoy how the album starts upbeat and transitions to the slow dreamy vibe in the second half. This might not be the right genre for me, but it's cool as a project.
not my cup of tea..
sorry but that was so mid… i just don’t like hard rock like that
Not my thing
2.5 3
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Beyond Once in a Lifetime (which is a fantastic song) the rest of this album has never clicked with me.
talking heads are the group that it pains me the most to not connect with but this one did nothing for me...i would literally rather listen to brian eno's hold music at this point
this is so 80s but like ok! LMAO
2/5 really weird and unexpected in a bad way. too experimental best: -
Ihan kivan kuuloista. Musiikkityyli ei ehkä sellaista mitä yleensä kuuntelen. Mikään kappale ei oikein jää mieleen. Biisit melko samankaltaisia keskenään. Once in a Lifetime ja Listening Wind oli parhaimpia.
Yet another album that's loved and celebrated, and I hated it
this was so bland and boring I couldn’t believe my ears. Skipped a few songs half the way through.
Not for me
experimental n ruminating not my cup of tea
Once in a Lifetime is a certified banger, but the rest of the album was just so-so for me. Not a huge fan of David Byrne's talk-singing vocals. Backing vocals are good, instrumentation is sometimes very good, sometimes overly busy and repetitive.
Very experimental, I could listen to it when in the mood, but I think it is not my fav album of theirs. I like the other one "Fear of music" more.
Brian Eno's influence on this album is obvious, and I wish it wasn't. Still not as bad as an actual Brian Eno album though. Supposedly the instrumentals were influenced by Fela Kuti, but they're certainly not as good.
Obvious hits once in a lifetime and houses in motion, but otherwise not for me.
Didn’t really listen tonit
This is another artist that I need to reconsider whether I actually like them or not after listening to a full album, or whether I just need the hits. “Once in a Lifetime” is great. The first half of the album is tolerable. The rest is just a bit too weird for me to like that much. I’d probably give it 2.5* if I could, but it’s not a 3* album.
Second consecutive post-punk album in a row, but at least as this is Talking Heads, it'll be a little bit funky and a little bit odd. Also, you know, it includes Once in a Lifetime... ... well that was disappointing. 2 stars, solely for Once in a Lifetime. 2/5
Nothing makes me feel crazier than thinking Talking Heads are grating and overrated when most people think they're on par with The Beatles
Boring
Really good first half, unfortunate drop off in second half.
Not my thing
5/10 not bad first listen, just not what im looking for when it comes to music
it was fine. not really my favourite tho
"post punk white funk" Ouais, non, ça ira.
Having only heard the radio singles for Talking Heads, this album wasn’t what I thought it might be. Once in a Lifetime is good, but the rest is not for me. Repetitive and monotonous beats with David Byrne’s droning voice on songs that were far too long for that.
Once in a lifetime is a great song, love the video with David Byrne's goofy dance. Rest of the album didn't hit for me. Most songs felt like 4 measures of music played on a loop with the occassion vocal and guitar lick. It was all good and fine I just found it repetitive and honestly a bit bland.
Not the vibe for me. got three songs in and thought yeah nah
I don’t know why, but I don’t really connect with this album. I like once in a lifetime and the opener, but the scary, funky stuff is not really my vibe. I feel like on most of the songs, the grooves, or not that memorable catchy, and they go on for a very long time. It’s highly creative, but I leave not having enjoyed it
-okay something different and that i am at least some what interested in -okay come on can i just get a normal album for once this is showing me 70s is a decade where there’s only a very specific sound i like -born under pressure no thanks -crosseyed and painless is better but still not very good -the great curve is fine -wait i know once in a lifetime and i like it -houses in motion is fine -seen and not seen is okay -listening wind is surprise surprise fine -i kinda like the overload
… bof
I’m disappointed that the only song that really sounded good was the radio song that I knew from this album.
Un peu trop experimental à mon goût
I guess this is what Fela Kuti would sound like if he was a bit crap. Don't get me wrong, this was pleasant enough to listen to, and the Brian Eno touches could be heard throughout. But it wasn't a patch on Fela Kuti, and I would never go out of my way to listen to this again. The big hit was overplayed to the point of becoming annoying, so there's that too I guess. Pleasant in parts, but aimless, and grew tiresome by the end. I'm kind of glad that I got a chance to listen to some Talking Heads, as I've often been told that they're amazing. But if this is their magnus opus, then they're definitely not for me. Two stars.
meh 2/5
Sure this is crazy, cool, experimental, unique, and sophisticated. But so were Bored Ape NFTs. Just because the album is all of these things, doesn’t make it a good listen. Maybe some day this will click for me, but for now it just feels like it’s too excessive in its pompous, yet nerdy chaos. Shout out Once in a Lifetime music video though
Pretty repetive and boring, some good bass and guitar parts
I appreciate the talent of the Talking Heads but I can't get into their choppy vocal style.
It was ok, it has the same as it ever was song, I’m not a huge fan of new wave stuff, though. Didn’t particularly speak to me
Very surreal and dramatic with some spookiness. Like the high energy but where are the drops? 😞 This album made me tired.
Was worried about the alblum when I saw it come up. It was an interesting listen. It might have been the first time i listened to thier "non hit" songs.
Even with Once in a Lifetime, this does relatively little for me. It's not bad, but I just don't really want it.
Please let this be the last talking heads album I get. There are wayyyy too many on this list
To me this album is what anxiety feels like. Very chaotic, nervous energy and just a lot going on at once. This is my second Talking Heads album and I'm still not big fan of David Byrne's voice. There were some good grooves and bass playing on this album. I’d give this a 2.5 but in rounding down to 2.
Once in a Lifetime is good, but prophetic.
I really like them but this isn’t my fave album…
Didn’t enjoy it.
Not for me. The songs do grow on you after awhile: they need a minute to get into the groove. Best tracks IMO are Crosseyed and Painless, and The Great Curve.
Talking Heads are one of those bands whose music I did not know well beyond their hits. I've found that in some of these cases, the rest of the band's catalog tends to be different in an interesting and sometimes better way. This is not one of those times... I found this album grating and almost too experimental for its own good.
Except for once in a lifetime, I find this boring. Many of the songs have a cool sound or groove, but then repeat it monotonously for way too long.
It’s not my jam.
Just like the other Talking Heads albums on this list, I find this a borderline excruciating listen. It just pushes all the wrong buttons. Once in a Lifetime is not that bad though, especially in the context of the rest of the album, so 2 stars.
Didn't finish. Kind of boring, but I can imagine this being super cool while coked out in the early 80's.
Pretty boring, didn’t get much out of this one. 2.25/5
A good album, not personally my taste
Still don't get them. Some flashes of fun but never convinces
I don't get it.
I don't like this one. I don't completely hate it so I'll give it 2 stars.
Eh, not particularly my thing but I get why people like it.
Funkier than some of their output. Lyrics and vocals suggest anxiety, frustrations and paranoia. Some tracks somehow manage to be both frantic and overlong. Aside from the banger that is Once in a Lifetime (which was the same as it ever was), I enjoyed Houses in Motion and the more commercial Listening Wind, whereas Crosseyed and Painless was a bit claustrophobic.
One of the first Albums I bought as a 14 year old was Little Creatures which I quite love. I have also seen David Byrne live. In this context I am quite underwhelmed overall by Talking Heads and don’t actually like David Byrnes voice. So there!
Tossed up between two and three, but eventually landed here. Only song that grabbed me was Once in a Lifetime, apart from that it just felt like background guitar for an hour.
I liked some of the jammy songs but damn that David Byrne what a bozo. He ruined most of the songs with dumb voice. And what about those stupid suits with shoulder pads… give me a break.
Horrible stuff. 1.5/5
i found this one really hard to get through, obviously once in a lifetime is the stand out track but the rest didn’t really do much for me
I thought I was going to like this album a lot more than I actually did. I only liked two of the songs and one of them was their MAIN song. The rest of them sounded exactly the same.
Sigh. I admit that this album is obligatory. I admit that Once in a Lifetime is a good song and a smash hit. I admit that the album is creative, unique, and influential. Now, can the rest of you please admit that this era of new wave/post-punk "rock" (just threw up in my mouth a little calling this rock) was akin to an actor audibly farting during a performance of Romeo & Juliet. It's interesting, kinda funny, but generally contributes nothing positive and probably actually hurts the overall performance. Influence, sure. Quality, yeah, that's its best argument. Hits, you got one. While it's the only new wave album that I think I respect, that doesn't mean I like. it. 2? 1.5?
only one good cut. They have done better
This album wasn't my favorite. It had some good catchy moments, but there is something about their vocals that I just can not get into. They are too.... "dark" for me? Maybe? I am not sure what it is. The songs also seem to go on a little too long for me. Overall it wasn't bad. Probably a solid 2.5. Liked Songs: "Crosseyed and Painless" , "The Great Curve" , "Once in a Lifetime" , "Houses in Motion" , "Double Groove"
Almost entirely forgettable. I understand how it could have been important in 1980 but it just doesn’t hold up for me.
Pas marqué plus que ça
Could just say refer to my reviews of fear of music and talking heads 77 cause that’s three albums from these guys that have just been dull, sure there are a few decent moments but it’s not enough to make it a good album. 2 stars
I respect Talking Heads way more than I like listening to them.
Maybe it's because I'm coming straight from Repeater, but I didn't care for this album. Not my cup of tea
I mean its aight, not my style.
Better than 77. So close to being 3 stars.
Strange album, Cover looks like they are balancing individual hams on their faces. Would listen to to fall to sleep 👌
Macy's
I’m sure someone can connect with it! It seemed like it took a lot of work. I really don’t have any idea what happened to my ears though. Really flabbergasted.
Don't like the main singer's voice. Instrumentals are okay, but not totally my jam.
Very medium, completely passable.
The line between God Tier Revelatory New Wave and complete dogshit is RAZOR thin. Talking Heads have yet to make the cut
Massively overrated, mainly for David Byrne. Musically, it’s good but he’s just so fucking annoying.
Not good
Unfortunetaly, I didn't like it as much as I hoped I'd do. I guess I don't have to love everything.
The entire album is monkey business except for The Overload, which is absolutely gorgeous. Drone out of nowhere, as if I got sent to Ukraine
better than every one of their other albums, still only a two
This was honestly quite a bore to listen to, so much so that while the songs weren't necessarily an assault on the senses, it will still receive a 2/5 instead of the usual as it just doesn't inspire anything other than some heavy eyes, which you would need to take some uppers to combat at which stage perhaps the droopy space music background here would also be more enjoyable.
A couple of the tracks are good, but it’s just too avant-garde for me. I feel like at some parts, all that they’re doing is just making noise. But not all of it is bad.
Most of this made me anxious
Maso
some interesting and different sounds
Intetsigende
Really only one interesting song. The rest was very sleepy
Favorite: Once in a lifetime Seeing that Brian Eno is the producer makes so much sense. It feels kind of brain numbing, which there's a time and place for, but brain numbing cool guitars are not my favorite. This is not the Talking Heads' best work in my opinion.
Remain In Light - Talking Heads I’m going to probably upset some people but, I don’t like the Talking Heads that much. This album included, it’s just really boring. The songs all have fairly uniform sound and that sound (combined with the production) is not one I enjoy. The vocals were ok I guess but this is overall an era I also don’t enjoy all that much. I did enjoy “Once In A Lifetime” though.
I really don’t like Talking Heads beyond some of there hits. This album was more art school tinkerings with no consistency of sound or feel. The influence on Franz Ferdinand is especially evident on this but I just can’t get into it. I’m not even that into acknowledged “classic” Once in a Lifetime. Too many noises, too many different styles, and no cohesion.
Unpleasantly repetitive. Once in a Lifetime was ok. 2.5
1. Born Under Punches: A bit strange and slow 2. Crosseyed and Painless: A little more upbeat 3. The Great Curve: Funky fresh? 4. Once in a Lifetime: Classic 5. Houses in Motion: What is that instrument? 6. Seen and Not Seen: Uh oh, Talking Heads with a talking song 7. Listening Wind: Oh boy this is weird. Are we talking about some important global trader? 8. The Overload: What's the opposite of going out with a bang? Well I knew the Talking Heads were an experimental band, but this album is a little too slow and boring
good performance, many styles, like it.
Funky riffs, Once In A Lifetime is a good song, most of the other tracks feel like filler/hold music. One track album, won’t rush to listen again
Overrated band oh my laawddd
I can hear why it's good, but the rhythms are slightly too samey for me, and the quirky guitars annoy me more than I like them. Songs are slightly too long as well. The gloomy atmosphere is kinda impressive. But I'll never play this again.
Maybe I just don't "get" it... but these songs really didn't do anything for me. I know they were avant garde and were doing a lot of interesting things with their music at the time, and I respect them for their innovative edge. None of these songs did anything for me and just sounded repetitive. I'm not a fan
Other than Once In A Lifetime, this album is not my cup of tea.
College rock for the college educated? I'm not "against" cerebral music per se, but there has always been something about the Talking Heads that made me question whether it was me? Or was it them? I mean, a LOT of people love them. So I naturally wondered what it was about their musuc that I was missing, while "everyone else" got it. Upon listening to this full album through for the first time, at 52, I think I may have discovered what it is. It's musically appropriate for the era, and unabashedly lyrics for smart people comfortable with abatract concepts, diffuse meanings unascribed to the author and intentionally left to the listener to assemble their own meaning into it. Man, I'm way too tired to do all that. Genre Impact: Very High (TH is their own genre) Decade Impact: Medium Absolute Impact: Low Listenability: Medium Relistenability: Low
That's not my taste in music
Litt travelt til tider
Talking Heads weird me out for some reason. I tried giving them a listen a few times and the result is the same as it is with this album - I feel like I'm listening to a band made of psychopaths and murderers. Don't ask me why.
Very very mid beeps and boops. It's too 80's for me, but I guess this set the tone for the 80's? Bad tone.
I don't know why, but I really cannot get behind Talking Heads. Generally, I'm a huge fan of 70s and 80s music, regardless of the genre, but there's just something about their particular style that doesn't draw me in. I'm glad I listened to this album to broaden my horizons, though, as I'm well aware how well-loved and influential they are to this day.
ehhh not for me. I like some of their music, but not this
Album 2/1089 2.5 stars Meh... some of the songs were good but honestly I spent most of the time waiting for it to be over lol
This album would demand several rounds of listening and result might vary based on that. With one run-through this falls to two stars level.
It started off really groovy and funky, and I was like, wow, I’m gonna like this album. But after few songs, it just faded into the background. Maybe Brian Eno showed up and froze everything after the other guys tried to keep it groovy. Two stars belong to those first few songs.
I've always had problems with Talking Heads, especially with Mr. Byrne's vocals, probably more than a bit with his lyrics as well. This time however, vocals were not an issue. While the album has it's moments, Once in a Lifetime comes on top and most of the other songs don't make much of an impact. I like that there are a lot of cool rhytmics from around the world, clumped into songs that work, but many of the tracks felt like background hum and it was easy to lose concentration.
Started promising with the African influence, but not for me.
Not my favorite, repetitive sound that made it hard to listen
Quite Jazzy. Not a big fan. I actually liked the last few unfinished songs. Once in a lifetime was also okay.
The Talking Heads were a band that I never really ventured into because of the weirdness and mediocrity of the tracks I knew. The songs seemed to never end and were drenched in funky grooves that seemed awkward to me.
yeah I was just not feeling this one on a first pass
I want to like Talking Heads. I respect the impact and influence that they have had on the music industry and its artists. It's all a bit too 'Art school' for me.
I have an irrational dislike of Talking Heads - I have no idea why or where it came from. The music isn't THAT bad, it just irks me in a way I don't fully understand. Stars adjusted up slightly because I feel like my dislike is unreasonable.
Thought I’d like this better.
2.5 - not bad but not amazing
It’s Talking Heads… Weird music that ran together. Did I hate it? No. Did I skip to the next song mid way through each song? ABSOLUTELY!
Repetitive new wave album with some cool ideas and 'Once In a Lifetime'. AnD yOU MaY Ask YouRSeLf is this album any good? It didn't click with me but its hard to argue its anything but unique and full of fresh ideas. Highlights include the song where the vocal is a monotone reading of the Face Off wiki and Fela's Riff, a song entirely comprised of a fella's dope riff.
Musically really interesting - feels distinctly 80s despite using (I think) real instruments, so must have been quite influential at the time. Not really to my taste but can appreciate it's impressive. Once in a Lifetime clearly the stand out song.
Not really my jam. The vocals are not good.
Wanted to like this more than I did but it’s definitely cool
Too long and self indulgent
This was not for me. I was waiting for it to end
Didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped.
All a bit weird and meh... apart from the obvious standout track
Not my thing. I don't see any of the stuff that all the other comments say. The first song is alright, but nothing after that was particularly interesting to me
After the first Talking Heads album I got, I was looking forward to hearing more of them. Was kind of disappointed. Talking Heads 77 is definitely a much better album. Most of this album is just kind of there, doesn't really go anywhere. Not terrible, but not really all that interesting either. Best song: Crosseyed And Painless
2/5, abbastanza monotono
2.9 stars
Boring I'm sorry... I kept zoning out. All the songs sound the same, they sound cool! But the same
not my type...
I knew Talking Heads before, mostly their big hits. And I’ve listened to this album before since it’s very highly rated. I never got it. Listened to it again, I still don’t get it. I mean I’m sure it’s great and beloved by many, I just don’t see how this is fun or interesting to listen to. Incessant beats that are somehow not intuitively rhythmic, just overpowering. Disaffected vocals. Very sparse instrumentation. Feels like some sort of weird sermon. Maybe some folks get some deep emotional connection to this stuff but I don’t. I give it two stars because I can see how it might be considered a seminal work for the genre, I just don’t like listening to it.
Done
songs are too long; talking heads has much better
When it was good it was great but when it was dragging it was a chore. I knew “Once in a lifetime” already and I really enjoy this song but overall the album did not have a ton of parts that made me want to focus in more. High 2 but a 3 doesn’t feel correct.
gonna be honest... don't particularly like the talking heads. I find their sound to be a bit odd, like they themselves can't decide what direction to go in. I'll give this one a two, because it didn't really do much for me
Serviceable. Not the worst to listen to. Not a band that clicked for me.
Uh, what did I just listen to?
I went in with high hopes but my hopes were dashed. I don’t even know if that’s how you use that term in a sentence. This album just plods along, one song into another. You catch yourself drifting off in thought for an unknown amount of time, only to discover that you are listening again and find that it’s a different song but same tempo. I did not turn into a fan of these guys after this album. Listen at your own risk. Choice cut: Once in a Lifetime
Talking Heads are band I’d obviously heard of a lot but never really listened to until starting this project and for someone who doesn’t love 80s music, I’ve been impressed. I was excited for Remain In Light, and shocked when hearing it My first impression was Graceland-esque. White people do African tribe music. But this isn’t half as cringe. It’s very rhythmic and repetitive. I need to listen to it again but currently don’t see the genius 5.3/10
I 🙅🏻♀️ don't 🙅🏻♀️ like 🙅🏻♀️ new 🙅🏻♀️ wave 2 ⭐️
Unique does not mean good. Tough listen
I'm getting the feeling that I don't enjoy the Talking Heads. Their music is just banal to me. I do admit it's a bit funky sometimes. "The Overload" is the best song; the whole album should've been like that. In other news, I've been discovering new and better music. 2 stars for "Remain In Light".
the rhythms aren't riveting, incredibly repetitive and frankly the unique sounds don't justify listening. The execution is good but their heads were in the wrong place I feel. Standout tracks: the great curve, once in a lifetime
Lots of interesting rhythms, a little funk, and a very international feel on most of the tracks. "Overload" had a very Doors feel to it. Unfortunately, none of this did anything for me today. It just sounded like a mess to me.
⭐️⭐️
Not really my thing.
Once in a Lifetime is great…and I really didn’t like the rest of the album.
Hmmm, this was just okay. I've learned to love the Talking Heads from a friend, but this album didn't really hook me. I'd rather re-watch Stop Making Sense.
last song is nice but wow was this album mid
80ies Brit Pop. For me not overwhelming
Yeah I don’t get the appeal here. The guitar was weird (yet interesting), the singing was more like slam poetry, overall it was kinda just okay. Perhaps the novelty is why this album is held in such high regard but idk
I did not like this.
I was happy to receive this album because for several years I've had a strong aversion to David Byrne, and I was starting to wonder if it was unjust. It wasn't. Make no mistake, the Heads have a phenomenal rhythm section that drives the funky-dance aesthetic of this album. And, of course, "Once in a Lifetime" is a classic. No complaints there. But the album is otherwise overly indulgent and occasionally borderline pretentious. Certain songs are far too long, and Bryne's "I'm a funky nerd" aesthetic loses its charm over time. I get that the Heads were enormously important and influential for a generation of fans, but this band will never move me. God, I wish Tina Weymouth had been in a different band....
very experimental? there's a lot going on in every song, definitely too much going on. there's a gem or two in there but not worth the rest of the album 3/10
Once in a lifetime - Iconic. And a bunch of other songs.
Nothing remarkable as it is not the kind of music I would generally listen to. I would not seek out similar albums.
Really like once in a Lifetime, the rest not so much. Talking Heads being one of the bands from whom I only like a very small part of their music. One good track can not rescue this album.
Okay, so there are some intriguing songs but the overall vibes of the album are just a bit too weird and there's a lot of repetition. Not too bad as a background listen but not too great.
Started promisingly, got a bit dull, Once In A Lifetime!!! Dullness resumed.
Langweilig.
Not what I expected. From a musical point of view probably not too bad, but I didn't like it.
Third Talking Heads album arriving on my list and every time a Talking Heads arrival always seems to coincide with some real life catastrophe. If its not Leeds United losing at Wembley this album arrives when trying to purchase a new car the sale of which went so wrong I had to reverse the deal and then my old car then costing me an arm and a leg needlessly. The whole point of mentioning this is that even if I was minded to listen to the Talking Heads for pleasure, which I’m not, I seem to get little time to do so when the 1001 Gods present me with one of their albums. However in this case this is an album I am vaguely familiar with as it’s the only one I have ever bought. That was out of curiosity because of all the music press continually going on about them. No streaming then of course so the only way to hear an album and seriously listen was to buy it. So I did my time then trying to get into this so in all honesty don’t feel the need to repeat this trauma listening today. Nothing has changed. I consider it to be an awful album. It holds nothing of interest to me at all. The only improvement from my vinyl copy I bought is that I can easily skip tracks early when streaming. The one concession I will give it is that I am aware that the album is lauded by greater minds than mine as been of great musical value. For that reason it does perhaps deserve a place on this list. So with a doff of my cap to these musical geniuses I will move my finger right from hovering over the figure 1 and through clenched teeth bring it down on 2. I have just checked the 1001 book and seen there is yet a further Talking Heads album to endure. It would be nice to know when this will be so that I could stay in bed to prevent further bad luck befalling me. But alas that isn’t how this process works. I will keep my readership (ie me alone) posted. 2/5 28/9/24
Wow. Was war das denn? Afrobeat, Funk, Spoken Word, wirre Sounds und Abläufe, Melodiefetzen, Groove… Nichts zum Nebenbeihören. Once in a Lifetime ist Anspieltipp. Mir persönlich zu anstrengend und repetitiv. 2,5 von 5
#353. It's exactly what you'd expect from a Talking Heads album. 1 or 2 good songs accompanied by a lot of weird. 2/5: meh
Had a friend who adored Talking Heads. To me, "Remain In Light" was not a good listen (¬_¬") "Remain In Light" sounds like having your dry sock dipped in a cold puddle. Not exactly pleasant — eh? With mechanical beats and rheumy vocals, Talking Heads feels almost like a parody band.
Melhores Músicas: The Overload Piores Músicas: N/A 2.5/5
Once in a Lifetime is good
Apart from In a Lifetime and Road to Nowhere, only one of which is on this album, I guess I still don’t care for Talking Heads.
Art punk. Fully experimental, pinnacle of the 80's. I tried to love it, but something didn't click. Sad.
It's ok, nothing great except for one song
This is where the inventive and clever collection collapses in on itself only surfacing for the one gem we all know. Not helped by the dense production.
I understand what they are trying to do. I appreciate what they are trying to do. But it’s just not my style I don’t think. A few good ones on here. It definitely is an ALBUM rather than a collection of singles.
Honestly more meh than I expected. However, I definitely have a much more holistic view of albums than a lot of people. It takes good musicians, good vocalists, good lyrics, and good songwriting for me to be totally in to something. This album had about 1.5/4 of those things
It was ok, after reading more about the lyrics and the meaning behind the songs i was able to get into the album more.
I typically enjoy the Talking Heads, but this… this was not it. I feel like the music here may have been trying to program me to commit murders. It was like jungle robots clanging in my brain. I really don’t understand.
1 point for once in a lifetime but i just found this noisy
Talking heads are classic, and I've pretty much heard them enough.
For the most part this album lacks structure in it's tracks. I feel as though a lot of the tracks are jam sessions with a few lyrics sprinkled in here and there or at least that's the sense I get listening to Remain in the Light. There are a few tracks that I enjoyed in Crosseyed and Painless, Once in a Lifetime, and Unison. Would I purchase this album if I were to run across it at some garage sale for a low price? No. Would I go out of my way to listen to this album in full again? No. Did I waste my time listening to it? No.
Album sounded like one big long song
Reading about writers block, experimentation, random African influence, PR issues, Eno's exit -- this is what this album sounds like. Some NY art school kids mimicking Fela Kuti.
not my cup of tea
Good songs
There are good talking heads songs but there are no good talking heads albums. This one wasn’t quite as annoying as the others we’ve had and it has one of the ones everyone knows
Honestly, disappointing. I expected more from the Talking Heads. It was fine, but not really exciting.
Last time we had Talking Heads I said this: "Talking Heads 77 is too new wave for me. Some of the music hits a nice groove, there are decent elements of funk in there, but the vocals aren't my thing, never have been across the genre, and bring it down wholly. Just a style that's somewhere between nonchalant and whimsically ironic, no thanks." Remain In Light is the same, I don't need to say any more. Still a 2, still not something I want to listen to.
Interesting album with cool experimental sounds incorporating nature and African beats. Glad I listened to it but wouldn't listen again.
My ears were tired after the third song. I desperately needed relief, so I went and scratched my nails on a chalkboard. Problem solved.
Quite samey - not for me.
- these guys aren’t it for me - almost funky but not
not really my cup of tea :/
Trash Too much keyboard
This album is proof that different doesn’t always mean good. The looping thing got old to me halfway through the first song, it’s one of the things what drives me nuts about modern music. I’m sure it was a big deal at the time and had all these cool innovations, but it just didn’t do it for me. The one thing that was cool is hearing a song that weird al parodied (once in a lifetime). It’s 2 stars because it did have some cool parts. I liked the second half better there were some more interesting sections and more variety in each loop. I can see the Fela kuti influence, except his music had good instrumental soloists. This just has incoherent ramblings. Like fela kuli and Pink Floyd combined. I can see how people would like it, but not me.
Struggled to get through this one.
Other than the two singles (Once in a Lifetime and Crosseyed and Painless) there are only so many one-chord songs that I can handle.
As expected, an anchoring album of the 80s
New Wave und experimentell. Nun ja.
Not a fan. The only song that I will listen to again is once in a lifetime
Once in a lifetime is a classic epic song, but the rest of the album doesn't hold up. Frenzied, jarring and very memorable.
Not rlly my vibe
More like talking dead

I try every time but I do not like the Talking Heads.
Didn't really care for it.
Once in a Lifetime and a bunch of other BS
Very funky stuff. Loved the intricate percussion. Also interesting guitar riffs thoughout. Once in a Lifetime is a jam. A lot of the other tracks felt like filler though. Artsy weird stuff that I did not vibe with. As a whole it was meh.
I've always respected the Talking Heads. Interesting, unique, creative, thoughtful. I've just never been able to get into the music. I find it unmoving and tedious.
I wonder if they would have been as popular as they were without the music videos...like the groove, don't like the voice. And, I wish he was a Union man.
Their sound was interesting but the album just didnt quite hit for me
Not for me
Silly
36/1001
The Fela Kuti influence is clear in this one, but not as good. Overall rough, not much stood out to me. 2*.
People just did fat rails of blow then recorded absolute dog shit back in the 80s, didn't they?
couple of bangers but generally uninteresting
Once in a lifetime and great curve only standouts
It was boring
