This has been on my "to-listen" pile for years. My only regret is not listening to it sooner. Day 1's album was More Songs About Buildings And Food; this sounds like a massive refinement of that sound. Excellent stuff!

Never was a talking heads fan. I didn't understand why they were a big deal other than one or two good songs.

First things first, my semi-obligatory and tailored review for records that Brian Eno was involved with: Another classic Brian Eno record, once again featuring Talking Heads. Now that that’s out of the way… Actually, never mind, I feel like that’s a really important subject to touch on. Normally I don’t really give a fuck about who produces a record, but I can’t help but feel that over the course of the records he produced for them, Brian Eno molded Talking Heads in the band he wanted them to be - or maybe more accurately, the band he wanted to be in. I mean, he introduces them to Fela Kuti records and next thing you know they’re making a record that is so indebted to Fela Kuti that the Fela Kuti estate should get royalties from it. That’s exhibit A. Exhibit B: The song “King’s Lead Hat” from Eno’s 1977 solo record “Before and After Science”. You might be thinking, “That’s a weird song title,” and you’d be right, it is. It’s also an anagram of the phrase “Talking Heads”. Listen to the song, it was released 3 years before this record. Then listen to what the Talking Heads sounded like in 1977. There is a damn good case to be made that “King’s Lead Hat” was a blueprint for where Eno thought Talking Heads should go. I mean, just listen to the overly processed, glitched-out guitar solo on it and think about Adrian Belew’s solo on “Born Under Punches” and his work throughout Remain in Light. Now, I’m not trying to say that Brian Eno was the mastermind of this band, pulling the strings and forcing them to be the band that they became, but I do think it’s unlikely they make this record, with the influences it has and as well crafted as it is, without him. That might seem like a back handed compliment, but it’s what a good producer should do: get the best out of the artist they’re working with. Brian Eno more than succeed in that on Remain in Light; this is undoubtedly the best Talking Heads record.

After the first TH album left me underwhelmed, this was a pleasant surprise. Although they bite P-Funk quite egregiously, the grooves are legit, no faking the funk here. A charismatic lead singer would put this over the top, but alas, we can't always have it all. 4 talking heads out of 5, mostly for the consistency of the songs. 👹👹 👹👹

A new wave, experimental album that takes a lot of influence from African grooves and funk sounds, with an electronic twist helped along with the producing efforts of the prolific Brian Eno. The first half of the album is definitely the stronger side, with insane electronic loops coupled with afro-funk/rock beats that both made you want to get up and dance and feel somewhat familiar, but at the time totally fresh and accessible to the wider population. Best: Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On) Worst: The Overload 3.5 Stars

Eh. A little boring.

I probably need to listen to this a few more times to get a better feeling about it, but I only managed a single listen. There are tracks on here I know of course - Once in a Lifetime naturally. But I did generally like it. I do like a west African rhythm (and there should, obviously, be way more African music on this list in general) and that really helped. I'll listen to it again I think, just not sure how frequently.

Significant yes but perhaps not consistently good throughout

Loved this band as a kid - my Dad had a copy of 1984's "Stop Makin' Sense - Live" that I played on repeat, so already a bit biased.

I like this album, it is weird but entertaining all the way through. They just kind of throw it all at the wall and jam.

It slowed down in the second half, but the first half was pretty solid. It's probably a lighter four because of that second half, but oh well. I'm more excited for their other albums. My favourite song was Once in a Lifetime.

Pretty weird, but funky in a good way. Once in a lifetime is a banger.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, not having previously been into Talking Heads. The overrall feel is funkier, more rhythmic and experimental than their earlier work and some of the tracks are quite hypnotic and the musicianship (aided by one or two guests) is impressive. Once In A Lifetime is the standout and probably more comprehensible lyrics wise.

Same as it ever was

It's fine. But I think I need to have a kooky haircut and a beard to enjoy it properly. The bass is fantastic. The lyrics are probably very clever, but I can't make them out, so I have to look them up. The whole is less than the parts for me though.

I wasn't familiar with this album, apart from Once in a Lifetime - which is now culturally engrained. It's a good album, feels quite experimental, overall I enjoyed it, probably need several more listens to appreciated it more.

Weird and great

That's some super 80s junk, right there. Repetitive, atonal, electronic music with shallow, new wave vocals. It's not great. But there's just enough of a 70s funk influence in here that it's not a total waste of time. Just barely.

While Fear of Music felt like a manic yet well-choreographed dance, Remain in Light is like a complete breakdown on the dance floor, both in the funky way caused by its anxiety-ridden grooves that'll get you dancing with the same ants in your pants that seem to plague David Byrne, but also in the complete and utter dread that can come with the existential. This album will have you start with an A-side full of new wave bangers to spin, twirl, and whirl to, but in the back of your mind you always feel something more sinister is at play. I mean, Once in a Lifetime may be one of their biggest hits, but it isn't really the goofy yet loveable piece of 80s goodness it is often described as, at least not fully. However, it is the A-side's tip-toeing around the grimmer subjects that give it the playful undertones to allow the listener to continue their awkward, solo cavorting in peace. It is full of rich production choices courtesy of Brian Eno, and every single musician here is at top form. Every single drum rhythm, every bass riff, and even the guitar solos, are all songs within themselves that any other album would present as the highest form of art the band can muster. Not Talking Heads, though, instead often being intricately put into the mix not to be buried, but rather discovered with each re-listen. The synth arrangements are perhaps the biggest underdog here, as while they are a mainstay in both new wave and post-punk, they often feel cast aside for the proclamation of the greatness that is the drum work, but the keyboard and synthesizer work makes a lot of these feel completely in-tune with not only their current contemporaries, but also ensure this album has all bases covered for decades still to come. Nowhere is this digital backbone more apparent than the B-side. The B-side instantly feels like something is trying to claw into the listeners thoughts, and therefore, their doubts. Sure, the danceable grooves of the first half are still present on Houses in Motion, but the slowed tempo and introduction of brass feels unwelcome in the best of ways. Something is changing, you can feel it, but not knowing what that feeling truly is gnaws at you. You keep dancing, but each following track forces you to look inside, outside, all around you, and by the end of it all, you stop dancing, and sit there and just take it all in. it's an overload of emotions, and you break down. Yet, the musicianship does not suffer, with the calmer, arcane, ritualism of it all hypnotizing you into a state of disbelief. The Eno-esque synths pull at your heartstrings, and do so with such a delicacy that you interact with the songs differently every time. Whether that be fear, loneliness, loathing, the B-side's emotional malleability is what makes it just as great as the openers. You may struggle to jump around and jam to it all, but you can still interact with it just as creatively, and an album being able to display this understanding of what makes music as a medium so enthralling this easily deserves nothing less than everyone's upmost respect, attention, and praise.

A desert island disc, 40 lean minutes of paranoia and downtown trepidation translated to monochord jams. Byrne sounds at wit’s end, and why shouldn’t he be? Reagan is here and the world is ending — might as well dance a little.

I'm most familiar with Once in Lifetime as this was always played early in MTVs life The rest of the album is pretty good. Some forward looking stuff that I don't think the masses were ready for

Funky and frenetic... wonderful and weird... thick with grooves... dripping with musical influences, but stunningly original. T-Heads made brilliant albums, always, and this was arguably their best. Brian Eno's influence is strongly felt, with shades of his album Before and After Science in particular. But the band is very much still themselves here, just better than they had been before, more layered and complex. It's a partnership that really works. David Byrne's presence crackles as always, with a whirlwind of lyrics that are like reading the manifesto of some prophet or mad genius. S’alright innit

This is my favourite of the Talking Heads albums I’ve heard to date. The repetition that would drive me mad on any other record is saved and strengthened by two things: it’s fun and funky as shit, and it’s human. This is not the work of samplers: the loops are played live. The back half of the album drags on a bit. I think The Overload would have worked better as a mid-album palette cleanse rather than a closer and placed next to Listening Wind (a strong track - love the guitar here! - but not the most energetic.) Standouts: Born Under Punches, Crosseyed and Painless, Once In A Lifetime, Listening Wind 4.25

I was somewhat disappointed by this. I know the singles of course. The rest of my Talking Heads knowledge comes from Stop Making Sense which is the most fantastically energetic live performance. By contrast this felt a bit flat and lethargic. Not bad by any means but I went in expecting to have my socks blown off and they remained firmly on my toes

Some of the better work I have heard from TH. Am not a big fan of their quirky college New Wave stylings generally, but this has a similar feel to Bush Of Ghosts in places, which I love. It seems darker somehow, though. Only track I remember is the already-familar Once In A Lifetime - so this clearly made quite an impression on me.

Only Once in a Lifetime stood out here for me. Listening Wind was hypnotic, but hardly a game changer. I'm not sure what all the hype is about with Talking Heads. This sounds like it could have been recorded anytime between 1980 and 2000. You can't date them because they don't have a style. I rather like style.

Really cool record. 2nd favorite by Talking Heads.

This all sounds very Talking Heads. There's nothing of the calibre of Psycho Killer or Road to Nowhere, but Once in a Lifetime comes close.

Remain in Light.

So after seeing the Pumpkins, I had a feeling I wasn't going to enjoy the next several albums and I could knock a few out in a day. I was correct. First, I went back to review some reviews about the Penguin group and was amazed how much love they received. But I say it until I'm dead, it's music, Love what you love. Talking Heads - they have a few songs I really enjoy. Swamp is a great stoner song. This album, well Once in a lifetime is from my childhood MTV days. A good song with, at the time, one of the videos of the time. I do like this song and brings back some good MTV memories. Other than that Crosseyed and Painless was decent. Not so much the lyrics, but the sound had a bit a funk to it and felt it was OK. Other than that, not for me. Will not revisit at weed/Mario kart time. I will give a 1 for Once in a lifetime. 1

Remain in Light is a perfectly fun album that does start to get samey and a little annoying by the end. I dig the Talking Heads but this is definitely not one of my favorites. 3

1 Oh my God Brian Eno produced this… smh. I’ve mentioned before that I'm not the biggest Talking Heads fan. Like, what even is this music? Funk music for people who are really into Andy Warhol and Roxy Music? That’s the vibe I’ve gotten from the band on everything of theirs I’ve heard prior, and that’s what I was greeted with immediately here. Only in this case, halfway through, it was sprinkled with some of the most annoying electronic noises I’ve ever heard (dammit Eno!). It didn’t get much better from there… in fact, I groaned once I realized Once in a Lifetime is on this album. The only thing I may ask myself when I hear this song is why I’m listening to it. The rest of the album is just repetitive electronic loops with David Byrne being David Byrne all over them - the strongest points for me were the songs at the end that involved him dialing it back a bit. I have no idea why these guys are critical darlings with a cult following. Because that’s the case though, I’m sure we’ll be seeing even more of them on this list, so I guess they have a couple more chances coming to them ahead. I do genuinely like the song And She Was, so hopefully they have other stuff out there I’ll enjoy as well.

This is a sonically radical, lyrical maze of an album. Remain in light asks: what does it mean to be given five stars? It required multiples listens but I think I've cracked it. As a government man, I got hooked by the rythyms, bamboozled and then intrigued by the lyrics. A great listen and genre bending piece of art. Want to walk around a big bright city and listen to this over and over.

Where do you start? Unreal that this came out in 1980. Everything about it is unique: the groove, the out of space sounds, the out-there lyrics. starts off with a groovy space beat, moves through the bangers of Once in a Lifetime and Houses in Motion, then ends up in with a feeling of walking through an eerie African jungle. The number of layers on each track is mad as well. Not really an album that can be listened to whilst multitasking. But everything about this is eccentric as hell, still sounding fresh 40 years later. For that I say FIVE ESTRELLAS PLEASE BARTENDER

Nice surprise, it´s almost addictive to play again and again. So a beautiful 4 stars.

The first six Talking Heads studio albums are all timeless classic albums (5*). This is number 4 so five stars. (Might be their most celebrated work, but I would not say that it stands out.)

My favourite Talking Heads album. It is all about the rhythms and musical arrangement, keeping other aspects like the chord progressions and song structure simple. Catch the groove, or you're lost.

My expectations were low since I could not really appreciate the previous Talking Heads albums from the list. However, for some reason Remain in Light did grab me. I played it various times and enjoyed it more and more. How can that be explained? Well, I'm really not sure. This one appears a little lighter and more joyous. Byrne's vocals, which I cannot stand for the most part, are less prominent; there are more harmonies instead. The album is overall very coherent. There are striking sounds, such as the guitar in The Great Curve and the horn in Houses in Motion. There is genuine beauty in Listening Wind. There is (by accident?) a catchy single with Once in a Lifetime (on which I even like Byrne's barking). What more could one wish?

I simply didn’t care for this. I feel like my tolerance for Experimental Stuff is at the exact level where I can get down with the most accessible radio singles, but the rest of the album just loses me. Once In A Lifetime DOES slap though, two stars for that bad boy.

In my mind, Talking Heads hit a wide variety with their songs (or at least with the hits that I knew). They could go Psycho Killer, or they could go This Must Be the Place - both of which were equally good. This record falls somewhere in the middle, and I thought I would like it more than I actually do. Shame!

Talking heads’ masterpiece, one of the best albums of the 80’s

You wanna hear the Talking Heads' masterpiece? You wanna hear the crowning achievement of Brian Eno's production work combined with David Byrne's unbeatable songwriting? You wanna hear the new wave record that blew all other new wave records out of the water? You wanna hear a perfect album? There was no doubt that the Talking Heads had something special here. A solid run-up of the last three albums (last two with Eno), taking what is easily some of the most interesting songwriting at the time and applying a dynamic production style that defied the boring and plastic production that would go on to dominate the 80's. By all means, Remain in Light should have been a blueprint for the new wave of the 80's. Side A has the most energy, with the infectious afrobeat rhythms and repeated chanting "and the beat goes on, and the beat goes on...". It instantly grabs you and brings you into a groove. Every track brings it's own unique energy on side A, and every track excels in building on it's elements. I think it is nothing short of spiritual. We close on a guitar solo, blaring out into the distance as we fade out, leaving nothing but the static picked up by the needle...time to turn the record. Side B opens with the megahit Once in a Lifetime. I love this song. Even when the Talking Heads do a radio-friendly verse-chorus track, it doesn't waste a beat or ever get boring. We retain a certain amount of energy carried over from side A with this and Houses in Motion, but we start to slow down with Seen and Not Seen, as David Byrne calmly speaks poetry over a relaxing beat. It's a meditation that carries us through to the end. Remain In Light begins with an explosion and ends with the fallout. Catching your breath after dancing as much as you can. Finding yourself lighter than you were before. Remaining in light, despite how hard it can be.

I like several of Talking Heads songs, but I’m not a fan of any of their albums as a whole. I think this is down to me not liking David Byrne’s voice. Not a bad album but just not one that I’d see myself coming back to. Standout tracks are ‘Once In A Lifetime’ and ‘Listening Wind’.

Моё знание о Talking Heads до этого момента - примерно 2 песни: Psycho Killer и Radio Head. В общем, не всё так однозначно про эту группу можно сказать по этим песням. Щас сюда опять придут ценители 10-секундных треков и скажут, что это ооочень затянуто. Ну да, затянуто. Но у чуваков бешеная энергетика! Я сразу вспомнил про Dire Straits и их гитарки. Здесь чуваки пошли ещё дальше, у них помимо гитарных проигрышей ещё и активно вокал с перкуссией помогают добавить медитативности и монументальности (The Great Curve, например). Опять же, говоря про отличия от тех треков, что я слушал раннее, здесь они какие-то.. более весёлые. Может так чисто из-за темпа кажется. Короче классная пластинка, она хоть и однообразная, но пролетела абсолютно на одном дыхании, я расщедрюсь на оценку. Ну и напоследок благодарю предпоследний трек Listening Wind за "мужика", который застрял у меня в голове на два дня. Респект тебе, mojique.

Так, я зачем-то решил пойти в ревью и Федя чёт начал говорить, что любители 10-секундных треков возмутятся. Возможно это была отсылка на мою хуевую оценку, но хуй там, тут затянутость вполне оправдана очень вкусным звуком, который отправлялся в мои уши с улыбкой от удовольствия на моём лице. Более того, давно думал самостоятельно познакомиться с толкин хэдс, так что я только радЪ. Но все таки на 5 рука не тянется, ибо лично я не буду упоминать этот альбом также часто как крафтверк условный. Но 4+ абсолютно заслуженные

Talking Heads once again prove they were more than prepared for the impending decade as they craft one of the decades finest mashes of pop sensibility and new wave twee that brings both joy and a tad bit of introspection. Glorious stuff.

Easily one of the best of all Time. Big Big Love

Great album! I recently started listening to more Talking Heads and have become a big fan. Their "Stop Making Sense (Live)" album is a masterpiece.

Is the dove still alive? I forgot to write down.y listening notes to the previous album, tonight is the night from Neil Young. I liked it. Neil Young is always nice to listen to, although there are no big hits in this album and i did t know any of the songs. You should not say this is his sixth album? It could have been also his debut, because there are no songs yet that overleed the otgers. The title song is a nice song in the tradition of telling a story. The second song was instrumentally the most toch one. And Albuquerque was the best rocking song on this album. It was along this song that i found a wounded dove along walking in the pets farm. I hope she did survive, i told to the supervisor who tried to save it by calling the protection service for birds. And about this album of talking heads: it s Friday night now and a talking heads album is ideal to start the weekend with 😉. It s got its typical way of steady rythms and almost narrative and sometimes shouting way of singing.

Big fan, so hard not to enjoy.

That type of old rock that I find is more sound than enjoyable. Really dont like the lyrics/vocals either.

Anyone who knows me knows how I never shut up about Talking Heads. Want to come over to my place? Ok, we’ll you’re going to have to stay up and watch Stop Making Sense with me. Those are the rules. With that in mind, I couldn’t contain my excitement when this popped up today. I’ll take any excuse to listen to this masterpiece. When the album opens with David Byrne’s scream, you just know it’s going to be an energetic ride. I could go on and on, but I’m just going to enjoy!

La barreja de rock, electrònica, música africana i loops de baix inacabables, sona per moments divertit, per moments hinòspit, i el més important és que la barreja acaba sonant coherent, tot i la disparitat dels seus ingredients. Sembla mentida que aquest disc tinguit més de 40 anys, sense dubte estava avançat al seu temps. La producció d'Eno és sublim.

Weird but not weird enough to be fun. I thought it was overall pretty boring. I was optimistic since I really like the talking heads songs that I already knew.

Favorite track: Once in a Lifetime.

An all timer. A dense, energetic, and witty record packed with personality. So many ways to approach this record from a listening standpoint; almost all of the songs have a polyrhythmic composition, with the only song that doesn't being the lumbering closer "The Overload," which still has the band enacting their take on Joy Division's cold and bassy structures. "The Great Curve" is almost sensory overload...there's so much going on by the final minute that it is perplexing how the onslaught of rhythms courses through you and yet functions cohesively. And with this being from the mind of David Byrne, you can expect a plethora of innovative, clever, and groovy musical/lyrical passages on the entire record. Perfection.

Weirder than I remember

Such a great band. Super creative and weird. The rhythmic layering is awesome. So many influences and weird qualities all coming together.

Not generally a Talking Heads guy. Not quite my vibe, but I can enjoy this album. Very original and in a good way, for the most part. Not much to dislike on this one, except for the range is a little low. 4/5

A band by 1980 so far ahead of their time it would take others several years to catch up. Funk, rap, afrobeats all in a sonic stew anchored by Weymouth and Frantz - surely contenders for one of the best rhythm sections of all time. Though The Overload sees a very slight lessening of the quality, it's 4.75 stars. I've had an earlier TH album ten days ago on the randomizer - assuming from this that pretty well every album up to Little Creatures will come up at some point.

I don't care much for the lyrics or Byrne's vocals, but the early electronic tunes with reggae vibes are nice.

Excellent through and through. I’ll never rate Talking Heads anything less than 5 stars, I just fucking love them and David Byrne so much. It’s the music that speaks to my soul, that resonates deeply with my own being in such a spectacular way that I can’t rate this critically, only effusively and passionately. I’ll love Talking Heads until the day I die.

Just bad

Not their best but an early indicator of where they were headed. Still has some great songs but they played them far better live (Stop Making Sense) than the studio versions.

Oh David Bryne and Brian Eno. Underrated (at least Eno is) GOAT's of music. An absolute classic on this album with 'Once In a Lifetime' and other incredable lesser talked about songs like 'Born Under Punches' and great 'The Great Curve'. So good, always a treat to listen to (I claim to be) Scottish music Legend. 9/10

I really like Talking Heads. The overall feeling I get from all TH stuff is ‘batshit crazy’ but this album feels like a bit of a journey. From the upbeat openings to flipping it in the end and being pretty downbeat. Enjoyed this a lot.

Nervous and revolutionary. It makes for uncomfortable listening in the best way. The 1st half is the beat to a perfect frenzy, the 2nd half is introspective and eye opening. I can’t rate this highly enough. Beyond 5 Stars.

Bar none, this is my favourite Talking Heads album. What it took them to get there is fascinating, and the collection of songs that resulted is yet another example of Brian Eno pushing artists to be more themselves by trying new and different things.

Big Fan, although my problem is I grew up with "Stop Making Sense" as my go to... This is that kind of thing you wish there were more of, but had there been, perhaps it would be less special.

I'm pretty sure I've listened to this album in its entirety once before, and on the first listen, I wasn't terribly impressed. However, this time through, I have a newfound appreciation for it. I'm always a fan of David Byrne's vocals, but this time, I really noticed how similar this album is to the works of LCD Soundsystem (the longer songs, the looping beats, the complex layering of sounds, etc.). Talking Heads were just on a completely different level than most of their peers in the 80's, and this album shows that. Once in a Lifetime is one of the best songs of the decades, but I think that Houses in Motion really shines on this album too.

Not sure, experimental and cool. Didn't really enjoy it however and found myself skipping songs. 2.5

Second listen. I like new wave and a few Talking Heads songs, but for some reason this album has never really left an impression.

It's the funkiest Talking Heads record. Though not as funky as the Tom Tom Club. But it's advantage over that is David Byrne's lyrics at their most esoteric and frantic. In short it's magnificent. Once In A Lifetime, and Crosseyed and Painless are both near perfect

Oh great, another Talking Heads album. My God I don't understand the appeal of this band. Nonsensical lyrics... Weird sounds... I did like this album better than the first Talking Heads album I reviewed (Fear of Music). Apparently, this album was a big change in sound for the band. Their singer, David Byrne, had a bad case of writers block, so on the advice of their record producer, Brian Eno, David began exploring the sounds of African drums, as well as horns, and a more funky bass. I think it is the heavy reliance on the African drums, as well as Tina Weymouth's phenomenal bass playing that made this album more tolerable to me. It certainly wasn't David's rediculous vocal delivery. Overall, I still hate Talking Heads, and probably will never listen to this record again. I will say the first half of this record was much better than the back half, and the Spotify link for this album is the Deluxe Version.... 4 more God awful Unfinished outtakes of songs. So yourself a favor and just listen to the regular version of the album. Favourite song: Once in a Lifetime Least favourite song: Seen and Not Seen.... And most of the rest of the album 2/5

Amidst the early stages of rap, who knew that the worlds first album essentially created using samples would come from a bunch of very academic, very white, new wave pioneers? And through this very academic approach, Byrne and Co. managed to create a record that unlike any other resembles a stream of consciousness. Remain In Light truly is a unique piece of art and deserves all praise it has gotten. Off the bat with 'Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)' you know something special is going on. Every track is remarkable with 'Once in a Lifetime' of course grabbing a lot of the attention. But come on; the lyrics on 'Seen and Not Seen', the spoken words on 'Houses in Motion', the entire thing that is 'Listening Wind'. Just wow. I could go on for days. I think it's pretty safe to say that without this record, there would have been no Graceland by Mr. Paul Simon. Oh, and good luck trying to find a chord progression in this thing

How does an album with this amount of repetition sound this varied? It’s like it’s never standing still! Everything on Remain In Light is just peak innovation and creativity. Talking Heads was already one of America’s most interesting rock bands. This is just showing off. Byrne delivers career highlights in almost every song while Frantz’ pulsating drumming breathes live into every second of runtime. Peak lyricism, peak new wave, peak post-punk, peak dancable rock (side one at least), peak Talking Heads. Remain In Light is simply peak music.

Some of these songs sound like they are off beat, or as if a specific drum is off beat. Sounds sloppy. I just can't get behind the weird 80's dance vibe.

I liked a few songs, but overall just another average-meh album for me.

It's a classic. Once in A Lifetime is the most famous song here (for good reason) but there's plenty more here to enjoy. Just awesome from beginning to end.

This album is so cool and unique. Listening to it, I can't help but wish I had been older in 1980 and able to appreciate it when it came out. Oh, to have been conscious of the music scene at that point! It must have been so exciting and different. This album sounds like nothing else recorded, either before or after. According to Wikipedia, David Byrne and Brian Eno were influenced by Fela Kuti and African music, which makes sense - the rhythms are unusual and there is a rambling feel to the vocal melodies that definitely reminds me of Fela. (Of course, Fela was influenced by jazz and funk!) Super unique and cool. Could listen to it over and over and still discover new depths. 5/5

Some Songs are too much for me. Arrangement wise. But most of them are some funky sh*t. Born under punches. Once in a lifetime. Of the 3 Albums i got so far, i knew all of them. But they were a whole different experince this time round.

A unique sound that will probably never happen again. An album that encourages our body to dance against a background of new-wave that embraces Afrobeat, but locks our head in a secluded closet to anguish and paranoid. Like... What the hell is going on? Brilliant and groundbreaking album, no doubt.

You can't really go wrong with Talking Heads. Even the filler tracks on this album stand up well while listening to it in 2022. Can't really add anything new that's already been said about 'One In A Lifetime'... one of the perfect songs.

'Once in a lifetime' is one of the all time greats. Really enjoyed 'Seen and not seen'. A Challenging listen at times, but overall it's somewhat brilliant.

this 1001 albums project has allowed me to learn more about myself and my music tastes, specifically that i don't like talking heads beyond their biggest hits. i admire the album's inspiration drawn from fela kuti, who i have enjoyed listening to as part of this project. incorporating musical elements from other cultures can be great if done respectfully and well. but despite this, the album just could not pique my interest. so many songs may have had a lot going but came across as monotone and boring. a lot of the album seemed too similar. i'm giving a 2 simply for the song "once in a lifetime." i did say i enjoyed their hits, so i will be fair.

This was a unique album; haven't heard anything else like this on the project thus far! That said, this album was interesting from a music study standpoint, but I didn't really enjoy the music itself, aside from Once in a Lifetime. I definitely know and like a lot of Talking Heads' biggest hits, so maybe their other stuff just isn't for me?

Not my favorite Heads album (always been partial to the first, and Fear of Music is a serious contender), but damn if this isn’t incredible. Still has that firesome energy and artistic spirit that makes their earlier stuff soar, but the experimentation throughout is undeniably charming. Sounds as good as ever. A-, maybe drop the minus?

In more than 40 years this record feels like it dindn't age a second: it's still innovative and brilliant nowadays. An absolute masterpiece by one of the most talented and influential bands in the history of music.

I've listened to this album on so many top lists and heard how Talking Heads are a GOAT band but I just can't seem to find the interest for myself. I can acknowledge they are great musicians and pioneers in the new wave era, which I love. Just too silly for me at times and hectic arrangements can't keep me interested.

I love this record so much. So many cool rhythmic layers and really cool tones and textures. I love all the funky rhythm guitar and percussion. These grooves are so great. I love all the unconventional solos that are super colorful and expressive. The lyrics are great and fit the music perfectly. One of my favorites albums -Also love the Angelique Kidjo version and the Stop Making Sense concert.

Love this record! David Byrnes has such an interesting approach to songwriting and art, and I’m a fan of the stuff he did with Brian Eno. I like the afrobeat inspired vibe on this record, some really interesting guitar parts.

This album is anxiety inducing. I hated everything. I can’t believe this was allowed to be released much less hailed to be an incredible album.

I never could get into Talking Heads, save from a few mid-80s songs. This album is more a sound collage than music. The singing is particularly atrocious. Of all the songs, only Once In A Lifetime was alright, but generally I find this album to be severely overrated. 1.5/5

Good good good good shit. This is everything they were building towards in their early work, fully realized. I see why this album is so highly praised and so iconic.

I think this is a real testament to Brian Eno. The soundscapes on this are just iconic and very complimentary to the Talking Heads sound.

Talking Heads are........a difficult band. Intelligent pop that speaks to you but without round edges and without warmth. There's much to admire and nothing to love here? Still, this album is a treasure.

Darn infectious grooves. Kind of like Michael Jackson’s songs where every instrument track is a catchy hook. Laudable for kickstarting Phish’s cow funk era. Knausgaard has a good vignette about listening to this album in Dancing in the Dark. A very inspirational album for artists of all sorts. The heat goes on. Same as it ever was.

Fun album

5/5. An awesome album that has back to back bangers. Although not all songs are the best songs in the world, the first half of the album really makes it amazing. The second half is a lot darker but still great.

I actually thought these songs were really interesting, but for some reason they didn’t really pique my interest, if that makes sense. I don’t like the spoken word stuff. I think the songs got worse as the album went on.

83/100: Oh man, I’ve been waiting for a Talking Heads album for a while now. The only two Heads songs I’ve ever really listened to are “Once in a Lifetime” and “This Must Be The Place,” but I’ve always been curious what their albums are like. Needless to say, I was super excited to get this album today. Upon first listen through, I could confidently say that “Once in a Lifetime” was the best song on the album, but that was kind of expected going in. What did surprise me, though, was how different every song on the album sounded. This is such a rare thing in music—especially in my experience throughout this project. Most songs on an album tend to blend together and I find myself having a difficult time remembering which was which. The Talking Heads completely avoided this issue on “Remain in Light.” The only connective tissue between each song was that they were all equally “weird.” That “weirdness” is exactly why I loved this album so much though, each song is like a good time distilled into 4-5 minutes. The tone is infectious, it’s impossible not to smile and tap your foot while listening to this album. That’s what music should be.

Another first for me. What a great album, energetic and creative, full of interesting passages and effects. Listened to it three times!

I enjoyed this album quite a bit, and more than "Fear of Music." "Once in a Lifetime" is a choice classic, and the rest of the album sounds both interesting and enjoyable.

I knew only the one track on this album, but I very much enjoyed being introduced to the others!

Not a lot of surprises here. It's fine but none of it really seems like mine. Feels like being at a party where I don't know anyone but I don't really feel like getting to know anyone either. And the feeling's mutual.

When someone ever asks you "What the hell is New Wave?", you go ahead and hand them this album. It's that simple.

Didn't know most of these songs apart from "Once in a lifetime". That track is still the stand out. The rest of the songs didn't really grab me on a first listen. might need to come back for another listen.

Definitely an 80's album but you can hear the punk influence coming through. Some great experimentation with other genres, Massive Attack must have been influenced by The Overload. Once in a Lifetime is a classic but I think my stand out track is Crosseyed and Painless.

This album exemplifies what makes the Talking Heads Great. The mix of absurd and meaningful lyrics paired with strange synth instrumentals creates some unique music. Remain in Light starts out with a bang with three great songs in a row. Unfortunately, the album slowly loses that punch and fizzles out by the end. I am bored listening to this album; most songs aren't doing anything particularly interesting, and strike me as repetitive. It's fine background music but not a keeper for me.

Overall pretty good. It's got the classic "Once in a Lifetime" but I also liked "Crosseyed and Painless", "The Great Curve" and "Houses in motion".

Starts strong, but the repetition wore me down by the end of the album. The outtake cuts at the end were especially tedious. One of these bands that I should absolutely love, but I'm on the edge about 'em.

Add odd-time signature African beats, general radio hit appeal, and sharp writing; And you get some of the most accessible experimental music ever made. Political, loving, and kind more than most you'll listen to.

A classic album that I find a bit overrated. It starts off incredibly with poly-rhythmic masterpieces. Side 1 is a wild ride and it only gets better with Once in a Lifetime, an absolute classic sluce of 80s goidness that remains fresh today, kicking off side 2. Then things take a turn towards the atmospheric, droney and dare I say monotonous. The one song that does stand out is Seen and not Seen, but the other three I find eminently forgettable. All that makes for a 4 🌟 album in my opinion.
