Reviews (page 11 of 14)
A good talking heads album, unique, but with minimal hooks.
Funky, energetic, and offbeat, it’s fun if maybe a bit too eccentric. The front half of the album carries quite a lot of the weight while the back half kind of drags on. I think the following quote from another reviewer sums it up well: “Innovative? Yes. Influential? Eh, maybe. Throw it on the heap of albums that are notable, but not necessarily a great listen.”
Interesting. It sure how I feel about it. I should listen again under different conditions. I just couldn’t connect with it today, but feel it is worth trying again.
Experimental rock. Weird af. not a fan
Can’t deny that Once in a Lifetime is a phenomenal song. There’s other good stuff here as well. 3.5 stars.
Quite the trip.
Really enjoyed 'The great curve' jam..and the classics obvs! Some not so much. 2.5x
Fairly good album. No favorite-able songs, but I didn’t skip any. Was kinda funky which I liked. Favorite song: Born Under Punches (the heat goes on)
Better than the previous one
Ok, but not more
I mean, it’s alright. Too much like old style cafe background music for my taste.
Still feels fresh after 40 year
Talking Heads always bring such unique and different sound, it’s a cool change of pace. Great mix of electronic elements and mixing effects with traditonal pop punk sound. The singing on this and similar groups tends to be my least favorite part. Not something I’m going to listen to regularly, but probably one to add to the collection because it is so different.
This was a great album, but a little out there -- as Talking Heads albums are. Three stars.
It's cool, not their best.
pretty cool
First listen Saved 4/8 Top track: Once in a Lifetime
Not the iconic Talking Heads.
5th one and I’m only 242 into this. I didnt they had this many albums. It’s a decent record but enough with the Talking Heads already there’s a lot of good music out there.
It was fine.
Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.
A good album, but not my favourite genre, and nt my favourite Talking Heads album
3.5
Not really a big fan of Talking Heads or David Byrne and I find his yelpy delivery on Born Under Punches to be particularly annoying. Crosseyed And Painless doesn’t do much for me either but The Great Curve jumps out more- I quite like the extra frantic cartoon car-chase vibe and some of the dentist drill guitar tones that pop up here and elsewhere. Once In A Lifetime is a pretty wondrous, iconic highlight where everything clicks impeccably into place and I can admit is pretty great. The second half beyond that is a bit barren and it is just the dark, doomy stillness and despondency of closer The Overload standing out as the next most notable track even if it is a copy of Joy Division I Remember Nothing.
Good
3.5 - once in a lifetime one of the greats
It's supposed to be an alternative classic, and sure you can feel it's greatness, but after all that technical brilliance and razor sharp production, if the music doesn't touches your soul, then what to feel about it? I don't know. The opening track's grooves are irresistible. Brian Eno's production makes sure that you hear each and every instrument with crystal clear clarity. Loved the song Great Curve. It's one running beast of a song behind which you can only half run/dance and try to catch up. Once In A Lifetime is okayish. Rest I didn't care much, not even the brooding closer The Overload. And yes I'm not a big fan of African music. It's fun, but not 'nuf.
I like it, i didn't save any songs but i like the vibes of the album
Two talking heads albums in a row :0 hm I liked this one a little less though. Fine, but not as good as some of their other stuff.
This album sounds like the 80s. Don't love the random talking in the middle of songs.
This was (surprisingly for me) pretty good! I’m not going to rush out and buy it or anything but I enjoyed having it on!
Classic once in a lifetime but have better other albums
Okay album, there’s better by the Talking Heads.
# 286 : They've done a pretty decent job. I think Its OK, I could listen to it, a couple of things stood out, But there were more songs I wasn’t really a fan of. But most songs are cool and weird. Fave Track : Once In A Lifetime
Great album but I prefer fear of music.
This had some incredible songs on it. It also had some songs I probably wouldn’t listen to again. So this is tough, the good songs are amazing, just truly great music. The other stuff has some interesting things going on, but as songs just don’t quite do it for me.
Really odd, in a good way, with bizarre lyrics and massive variation in rhythm and instrumentation. The 'Deluxe' version is not entirely necessary, although "Fela's Riff" is a nice nod to a superior artist.
"Talking Heads 77's" appearance on the random generator caused a bit of deja vu. “How many Talking Heads albums have we listened to?” “Did I listen to all of them?” “Did I actually write reviews for the ones I listened to?” In fact, it would seem I had the same discussion with myself when we got our second Talking Heads album. I went and listened to both and actually wrote the reviews at that time. This time, I was listening to our fourth (and final) Talking Heads album and thinking about how I like the Talking Heads more than I thought I did. And do you know what I wrote a year ago when I reviewed number one and two? Yep. So I guess I dig Talking Heads. Sometimes David Byrne’s voice is annoying. But sometimes it works great with the jangly and buoyant guitars. But “Once in a Lifetime” is a bit overrated. That chorus is tremendous, but the other parts are not my favorite.
Really a 2.5 but the most tolerable TH album on the list so bumping this up to a 3.
A 2.5 really
this is really putting work in. innovation in weirdness a vibe for sure but only to a point could i write poetry to this? n
Gets a bit too repetitive. Far from my favorite talking heads album. 🤷
Solid - 7/10
Had an oh it’s that song moment which was nice. Not as new wave experimental as the last Talking Heads album but still not for me.
6/10 - It was quite literally all over the place. They really took a lot of creative liberties. Some of them worked and some of them did not. Same as it ever was
Punkish futuristic sounds for 1980 album.
66/100
Not as good as I had hoped. Two songs on this album are familiar to most of us, and those songs are good. But the remaining songs just don't hold up.
Hm, I haven't been too thrilled about this album for the first 3 tracks. Once in a Lifetime is on here and of course everyone has heard that one. This was alright. Not crazy about it though. 3 stars
There were some misses here but also more than a few great songs. Low 3 overall.
Contemplating this a bit more
Some interesting sounds here for sure, sounds so quintessentially 80s. Not sure I’d revisit it though.
Not bad!
The album didn't bother me. However, I didn't particularly like it either. I don't think I'll listen to it again. 3/5
Not the album I would have expected from Talking Heads but still a pleasant listen on a Friday!
I of course love Once ina Lifetime, but the rest of the album was just kind of okay to me.
Yeah I dig it.
Packed with ideas and wittiness, and oh it just makes me tired to listen.
Not a big fan of this album think it tries too hard and ends up everywhere
good blend of vocals and instruments, last talking heads album was kinda weak so i was happy with this one :)
It was alright though I like other talking heads songs better. This album seemed like a very fast jazzy feel. "Disconnected" st points but that's just how music is
One really good catchy song with a lot of experimental trying too hard to be interesting songs that go nowhere. Boring album but not bad. Just not great.
This is my 2nd Talking Heads album to listen to on this list and it is nowhere near as good as the 1st!
En trevlig lyssning. Gillar ljudet och stämningen. Borde ha lyssnat mer på Talking Heads i yngre dagar då jag förmodligen hade älskat det. Wind In My Heart är bra. Fick inge sån där wow känsla nu dock. Synd för det är bra det är det.
Not nearly as good as 77
I think I'm in a slump
Fine classic rock album. Once in a Lifetime but not much else that I loved.
From the description I had high hopes. Definitely unique and funky, but even after listening to it on background for the whole afternoon I couldn't make it stick!
Once in a Lifetime +++ The Overload ++ Original malgré le peu de variation dans certains morceaux. Les interventions guitare de Belew sont un vrai plus. 3.5/5
I find myself thinking that Talking Heads somehow manage to sound like a parody of themselves. Once in a Lifetime kinda works, but I struggle with the rest of it. Like you guys have said, it's just too on the nose new wave for me to be able to take it seriously. I think it scrapes a 3.
I love TH but this one never clicked with me. Some of the songs are cool but they’re drawn out and don’t seem to go anywhere.
Superexperimental.
This album was interesting. It contains really interesting elements, though generally not being my cup of tea.
A good album I liked The Great Curve the best.
Yeah kinda liked it, sometimes a little repetitive but not in an annoying way. 3/5
Forgettable
i honestly wish i liked it more than i do. it's such a cool album but idk it's not clicking!!
Solid but not memorable 5/10
3.4 Probably needs more than 1 listen, lots going on in the production.
5/16/2024
Weird rock.
This album reminds me of a night out with my friend. Pretty sure she has ADHD. The night of drinking starts out okay, but all sorts of stories and not everything makes sense. Then a few hours into it it all makes sense (Once in a lifetime) and towards the end you are just feel exhausted listening to her stories, and just keeping up with her. Its not bad but i wouldn't go out with her every weekend. Thats how i feel about this album too
7/10
Yeah, some jams are good, but the rest was pretty Eno-riffic. When the bonus outtakes started I turned it off. That shit got annoying.
I like talking heads
- funky sounds the Talking Heads are iconic - good vibes, this is one I'll definitely have to go back to - The Great Curve was super fun - 3.5
Gamechanger - a couple of good songs, but then crazy experimental
Feels like I'm listening to the same song for the entire album. It's not a bad song, but not super compelling either.
This is a pretty cool record. Love the abundant use of slap bass. Some of it might require repeated listens to fully appreciate. Favourite tracks: Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On), Crosseyed and Painless, One in a Lifetime.
Intermission music. I'd expect something like this to play in the background for people to talk over before an event started
Good in places. Faded a bit as it went on.
Heard this a while ago and didn't think much of it. Sounds better with age.
I keep trying to get into talking heads but I just can’t, there’s too much going on
Well that was as ‘Talking Heads’ as an album could be.
I started really enjoying this around minute 40.
Talking heads are a band that I feel I should really like but they just don’t click for me for some reason
David Byrne's style is so eclectic that the music he and the Talking Heads create is the very definition of an acquired taste. Their style is so weird and peculiar, but not necessarily difficult to listen to. This album wasn't bad but it didn't seem to exceed past a rating of 3.
Good album with inventive rhythms. I always seem to enjoy Talking Heads.
I've always thought this was overhyped. I prefer earlier Talking Heads
Not bad, I felt like a lot of the songs were really lengthy and were just going on and on for no particular reason - like, I get it. The quirky new wave sound is neat though Favorite song: Once in a Lifetime Least favorite song: Listening Wind
Once in a Lifetime is a five star song. But in the while this us not a five star album. Too much talking vs singing, percussion vs melody. I know they have an album I enjoy more, hopefully it will show up on the list.
This wasn't a bad album. Nothing grabbed me emotionally so it was just alright.
Sounds ok Some really weird songs. Song plays in spotify go in descending order of plays. I guess a lot of people try this album and can't make it through. Once in a Lifetime is a good song Album doesn't seem to really flow. a few songs are good, but I probably wouldn't listen to it start to finish.
Decent album
An ok one
Didn’t realise Once In A Lifetime was a Talking Heads song. Rest was OK too.
I was surprised that I liked this to be honest. I'm not typically a fan of the talking heads, it's all a little too 80s on the nose for me but this - with its global influences - was an enjoyable listen
Not gonna lie, thought I was in for a stinker upon listening to the first song, but the songs got better. This is one of those albums where I thought the songs were generally fine, but would I go out of my way to listen to them? No. I recognized Once in a Lifetime and I do like that song, but if it already wasn't exposed to me through pop culture/radio, would it stick out? I'm not sure it would. All around average.
Liked the first half better than the second. Big fan of the groovy instrumentals. 3.5
I think the production for this album is really wicked and really unique for its time period. However, I often dislike a lot of albums in which the lyrics are super philosophical and deep and I need to dive through genius lyrics to understand what the fuck they are talking about.
It's okay, but not great in my eyes
A good album but not my favorite. I prefer Naked and the work David Byrne has done solo. Remain In Light and the other Talking Heads Albums needed to happen to produce what was done later though. There is no bad Talking Heads album.
- I see why people like this and I especially see how it was somewhat groundbreaking in the 80s. This album is eclectic and oftentimes bizarre. - Unfortunately, it just does not do much for me. I do like "Once in a Lifetime" and see why this particular song pops up often.
Mid. But that song just gives it a boost
I always want to love Talking Heads and am always disappointed. So sloppy and messy. Not much on here apart from Once in a Lifetime.
I was boring in parts, but i like the sound in some songs, like "Crosseyed and Painless" and "The Great Curve".
Good news from TVLKINGHEVDS Had not heard this one in its entirety before, the album is weird good. Liked all songs except Overload. Can’t beat Once in a Lifetime. You may (often) ask yourself; how did I get here? The cover art always seemed to me to be a nod the cover of Let It Be. Team rating (2.8*s)
This was a fun album. We get Once in a Lifetime which is a classic. The other songs were all interesting in their own way. They didn't stay with me, but I felt like I was experiencing something while listening. Loved some of the Nigerian influences and sonics.
Está bien, hubo varias canciones que me gustaron.
❤️
Listening Wind has some crazy instrumentals. Got bored with some songs when they were very repetitive. Liked a few songs and the mixing of genres.
Typical Talking Heads album, some songs really like and others just seem rather quirky. I have always liked the band overall and Byrne singing.
It was interesting. Liked the sound of it but it was also just really weird. It wasn't necessarily a bad weird (like Public Image Ltd. or Sonic Youth) more just the album lacked consistency and even in some of the songs themselves there wasn't much unity. Not really my style but still sounded nice.
Hyvää groovia ja rytmiä!
Not really my vibe... Too much talking?
Bit chaotic, bit weird, bit fun, bit confused. 63/100
Interesting, unique music. Cool and funky. But not really my style - especially the vocals.
Occasionally weird, occasionally brilliant
Chaotic but interesting.
Just okay, i think Byrne is dope af but this album is pretty carried by once in a lifetime imo.
Once in a lifetime is the single taken from this album.
Pretty cool but no songs I’d add to a playlist
Watched a movie by Nicholas cage the same day that referenced this band!!
Wanted to like this more than I did. I've tried several times to really like them but I think I'm the end I really only like the hits. The other music is just too quirky for me. That being said, it's at least listenable.
It's pretty impressive that an album this experimental gained the popularity that it did. I enjoyed most of the songs: the bass was funky, I liked the repetitious elements, the droning sections, and the vocals. Though I found the album to not have much of an identity or personality. It felt like the songs were just clumped together with a few singles mixed in. Both the opener and closer were weak. 3/5
5.5/10
Not as strong as I expected. A few standouts.
Good, but it ain't no speaking in tongues
6/10
Nope
This album is a lot like huffing paint. It's not really enjoyable but there is something inside you that doesn't want to stop. You keep going and you still don't like it but there's some hold on you that it has keeping you coming back for more track after track.
Good songs
Good album but not my fav.
Meh - not my style
It was fine. I can appreciate the musicality and vibe they were going for, but it didn't capture me. I *do* appreciate "Once In a Lifetime" though ("This is not my beautiful house... as the days go by...")
that was weird. Seemed very jam bandy
I listened to this but it didn't really grab me like some of the other Heads albums. I'm not a connoisseur of the Talking Heads, but definitely familiar. The only song that hits is Once in a Lifetime. It's great. The rest are sorta 2-3* songs. 3/5
Once In a Lifetime is classic 80s song. I prefer Houses In Motion. I owned this on vinyl
Tandon Scale Rating: 3 Standouts: Born Under Punches, The Great Curve, Once in a Lifetime, House in Motion Foot Notes: 1 Chaotic and funky and weird 2 The looping beats had me tapping my foot 3 A nice surprise album however it loses steam for me at the end Would I Listen Again: Probably behind the wheel of a large automobile (only a few songs)
"Drawing influence from Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, they experimented with African polyrhythms, funk, and electronics, recording instrumental tracks as a series of looping grooves" MY BOY! You can completely hear it in the first song... and maybe some of the vocals? First song left me confused on where this album is going. Super funky but also has some instrumentation that is very surprising. Once In A Lifetime is on this album??????? Love the artwork of the album. I think best album cover so far. Album slowed down for me at song 5. Best songs: Born Under Punches, Once In A Lifetime Would I listen again?: Speaker garage type of listen.
I'd say it hit the spot,,, not with every song, some are skips for sure but like some are very vibey, wouldn't say my favourite album but kinda in the middle.
Listened to on 1/8/24.
another fun adventure with david byrne and crew. weird quirky lyrics and energetic beats.
Yeah. It was fine. It's like the other talking heads stuff. For a song here or there, I can't imagine anyone else doing it. But mostly it feels gimmicky.
Not my type of music. But a couple of really good songs
Did Robin Williams have a side gig with Talking Heads? Once I realised who it sounded like I couldn't shake it the whole album. Was ok.
muy bueno, experimental y variado. lo volveria a escuchar
Interesting music sound. Liked a few songs but not really my specific taste!
It’s good - not my favorite of theirs.
- Interesting album. Surprisingly energetic and fun. - Seeing that it came out in 1980, it makes me think how much did this set the tone for upcoming bands in the decade.
Once in a Lifetime is obviously great and Crosseyed and Painless had me tapping my pen. A few of these songs got me going but overall the album didn't do much for me. Some songs felt chaotic and thrown together. I think there's probably better albums of theirs out there and I'm happy to investigate further.
Kaikessa nytkähtelevässä pysäyttävyydessäänkin levyn kolme ensimmäistä biisiä herättävät kysymyksen: onko keskeliään (eli taitavasti approprioidun) rytmiikan lisäksi tulossa mitään muuta? Kyllä on: Once in a Lifetime/Houses in Motion -kaksikko ovat intensiivisen koukkuisia, ja Listening Wind rauhoittelee kuulijaa, joka saattaa pelätä Seen and Not Seenin jäljiltä, että levy ajelehtii loppua kohti jännäksi ääneksi. Minkä se lopulta tekee.
A little too discordant for my current taste.
Pretty good. Solid talking heads.
Better then I expected.
Spannender Soundteppich, unverkennbar talking heads. 3.5 stars
Bra.
On first listen this was a bit hit and miss. At times chaotic, at times overly repetitive. With the exception of Once in a Lifetime, I wasn't overly impressed tbh. So I slept on it and came back with a fresh mind. I really like the elements in the songs individually, but they don't really gel properly a lot of the time. I get what they were trying to do and can see how this would have influenced a lot of future artists. After a few listens through, I would call this ok, but not great.
Not a record i’d listen to a ton but lots of cool basslines and cool grooves.
3.5
Nothing impressive
I love Talking Heads, but this might be one of the albums I listen to the least. I know it's the most acclaimed, the most inventive, etc. but it doesn't hit me the way Fear of Music does. Still, its Talking Heads, so I'd rather listen to this than most other music.
Originalt og helt sin egen greie, dessverre bare ikke min greie. Mye mer spennende enn det forrige vi hørte på. Respekterer mye, men digger ikke.
Pop sounds with punk energy. Once in a Lifetime is a banger. The rest is stylistically similar but not as catchy. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Once in a Lifetime Date listened: 10/12/23
eclectic
The Talking Heads are great. At least a four star band. But I'm not sure any of their albums, individually, are four stars. I'd put this at 7 out of 10, and I'm rounding down (and converting to a 5 point scale).
This is a funky album that I really enjoy. Once in a Lifetime is a classic song. There is so much 80s about this album and I love it which is surprising considering it was a 1980 release instead of later in the decade. That being said it's a rather inconsistent listening experience. Really good and a great way to take in 80s music if you are looking for that but overall I'd give this a 3 out of 5.
Once in a lifetime is great, but the album is otherwise not that memorable.
Once In A Lifetime //
Creative, but not really my thing
Didn't enjoy this as much as Fear Of Music - I guess they were going further in their experimentation and it didn't land we strongly with me. Definitely would have been better without the outtakes at the end.
Once in a Lifetime - classic. Album gets boring fast though
This album is confusing Once in a lifetime is a banger though
Okay album. Not my style of music.
I recognized Once in a Lifetime. I didn’t know any of the other songs. I didn’t feel hooked by any of those other songs, but I’m curving the album up because other folks in the group are really into the talking heads so I’d want to give them another try.
Forgive me, Tyler.
I appreciate the Talking Heads, I just don't always enjoy listening to them.
Good bongos. Some darker tracks
It felt off rhythm sometimes with talking with music in the background vs. singing and sometimes I actually like it because it felt different but sometimes I just some regular on rhythm singing.
Repetitive but funky sounds, definitely “interesting” as it doesn’t follow the normal music theory but not for me otherwise
Good music, bad vocals.
Unique, but never my favorite.
👍🤷
I liked it. Loved the bass. Might listen to it in the background again.
Wacky album very Brian Edo, knew one song and thats the one I put into playlists.
There is too much good music. Not everything can be a 4.
It's alright. I'd hear it again.
I really wasn’t expecting to like it for its year of debut lol. It was very good although a bit weird
Classic Talking Heads.
I preferred the first half of the album but enjoyed it more than I was expecting.
Mostly just okay Once In a Lifetime is great
Once in a Lifetime is a great song. The rest of it was good, but not great.
Super weird but great jams
"Life During Wartime" is an great song and massive hit. And featured an iconic MTV video. But outside of that song, it's not my favorite. Not my favorite Talking Heads Album, not my favorite album from 1980. One of the things I liked about Talking Heads' first two albums was the focus on concise songs with pretty simple instrumentation. That's gone here on the 2nd of the their Brian Eno produced albums. In their 1st 3 albums, the average song length is under 3:40, here it has ballooned to just over 5:00. Lots of synths and polyrythms, and looping grooves. Which is OK, I suppose, but really drags when songs are stretched out forever. They get points for evolving. I'll give 5 for the hit, 3 for the rest... call it 3/5, 'cause I can't do 3.5
Not really into new wave
The first five tracks on this album are tremendous, and the last three tracks…well, those first five are really, really good.
K, that was not the Talking Heads I was expecting. 😂 Big Weirdos. But I love them. Not my favourite TH album, but glad I gave it a play through. 👍
I don't think I'd ever listened to this, surprisingly. Only one song I knew but it was good.
kinda dissapointing consider how hyped this album is on sites like RYM, decent album with 2 catchy songs but nothing more than 3 stars
This is definitely a talking heads algorithm. Each song is completely forgettable (except maybe once in a lifetime), but the vibe is so unmistakable talking heads that I can't help but be impressed by their ability to craft such a unique sound. 3 stars. The last two songs almost ruined the album for me. I'm going to ignore them and stick with 3 stars.
born under punches 6.2 crosseyed and painless 7 the great curve 7.1 once in a lifetime 8 house in motion 7 seen and not seen 5 listening wind 6.6 the overload 6.5 I don't think it holds up extremely well but mostly inoffensive. 3.5 stars.
Good stuff, a tad on the long side but still a good listen
Another classically Talking Heads album. Full of their patented rock sound with the insertion of weird lyrics and noises. “Once in a Lifetime” sits on the back half, which will always be a great listen. Nothing else pulls me back here. 3/5.
Decent, I enjoyed it
It has the vibes of songs from that era. Honestly, it didn't stand out for me and I wasn't really moved by it but still pretty decent i guess. won't listen to it again though sadly
I enjoyed the album, and I'm glad I listened to it, but it's not really my cup of tea. I'm glad that this site made me listen to it.
I fell in love with Once in a Lifetime years ago and instantly explored the rest of the album to find myself disappointed. Then about 3 months ago More Songs... came up on this list and I found myself completely hooked. Going back to listening to this album again, I just can't get on board with it. The first half is alright, it leans too heavily into the African theme but has some good hooks. The latter half, specifically the last two songs, are just pretty weak. Disappointing given how good buildings and food was.
Kolmekauttaviis
Once in a Lifetime is good. The rest had good music but I'm not a big fan of the talking singing style.
Talking Heads first album only hints at what they would become.
Weird, wacky, crisp, and completely unique.
Une sorte de funk pas mal mais avec des éléments électroniques nul Écoutable mais pas incroyable Once in a lifetime est sympa Mais sinon belle découverte de Talking Heads j'aime bien leurs autres sons
This album is strange, but I like it.
Besides Once in a Lifetime, I wasn’t much moved by the rest of it.
2nd song was good, definitely the talking heads would not seek out.
the one good song on there i will always remember is that one one in a life time
j'aime pas la funk, mais au moins ça dure pas 1h once in a lifetime ok listening wind ok the overloard ok,style pink floyd
3.2
surprisingly not bad
Whilst I would always turn up the volume when ‘Once in a Lifetime’ came on the radio, I’d never explored their albums. So this was a nice surprise to have a reason to give this a listen. Love the energy of the first side (fired up my Monday morning nicely), and then the change of pace and mood that followed in the 2nd side. Lots of grooves, loops and different influences. Rated as a high 3 star, but will definitely listen again and maybe explore some of their other work.
Interesting album, which I have been aware of ever since I was 9 years old. I remember the lyrics and vocal style on Once In a Lifetime used to scare me as a kid 😂 never really listened to much by them over the years, however, it must have been one of the earliest western albums inspired by Afrobeats, I'll definitely have a few more listens, but really loved The Overload especially. A high 3
This one is 3, maybe heading to 4 upon repeated listenings. This album is very funky, although it's missing a key component of funk–some looseness of wrist. This shit is tight, often over-caffeinated (over-coked?) highly BPMed, and right on the fucking beat. That said, it is a very quirky, unique-sounding work, with repetitive, droney (mostly in the funk way) soundscapes, and David Byrne's alien observing human lyrics and delivery. I could talk myself into four stars for this one, but I don't know if I'll be saving this for repeated listenings, which is generally my bar for four.
Pretty unique world beat type sound.
I know Once in a Lifetime. It is quite listenable, a 'jangly' sound. I think I prefer their 1977 album overall.
Surprisingly, I didn't hate this, and it actually ended before I wanted it to. Would give this band another listen.
Remain in Light is the fourth album by American rock band Talking Heads. This is considered to be the band's magnum opus and it was more experimental than their previous work. Sonically, the album is influenced primarily by African music but also by polyrhythms, funk, and electronica, and the final product is a mix of new wave, post-punk, afrofunk, and art rock. Remain in Light is certified gold in the US, UK, and Canada, and the album was inducted into the National Recording Registry in the US for being culturally and artistically significant. The album performed well critically because of its new, experimental music that showed the band's evolution. This was an awesome and interesting album. I's a classic for a reason. The punk and rock music mixed with African rhythms is quite the experience. I recommend this Talking Heads album to everyone.
know the Talking Heads, I know 'Once in a Lifetime'. I was excited to listen to this one because my wife went to see David Byrne's show on Broadway on a business trip a few years back. I didn't think this was bad or good. 'Once in a Lifetime' was and is still a good song. The rest of the stuff just kind of blended together for me. I wouldn't need to listen to the full album again. 3/5
Rock-pop. Ni fu ni fa. Una canción me sonaba.
Once in a Lifetime
Once in a lifetime is a good song, the rest was not as good. Worse than I would have thought.

"Once in a Lifetime" is, obviously, iconic. But TBH the album overall just isn't quite my cup of tea.
A different sound and perspective.
Not a bad album, interesting soundscapes for sure
Once in a Lifetime is fun, the rest is only OK.
la sección rítmica es espectacular, el resto es entre monótono y experimental. aparte, david byrne tiene que gustarte.
kinda dissapointing consider how hyped this album is on sites like RYM, decent album with 2 catchy songs but nothing more than 3 stars
I like the Talking Heads but this is not my favorite of theirs...
I nearly turned this off midway through track one, but decided to persevere and glad I did. Unusual but can see why it's in the list.
Didn't really like it, some of it I did.
Everytime I listen to Talking Heads it makes me want to take a big whiff of Jenkum. I've never listened to a Talking Heads album completely through. This one was alright I am guessing that there are probably better ones based off of the songs I know Once in a lifetime is a jam.
j'ai pas frissonné
Already have this album on vinyl so I'm excited to re listen to this album while I clean my room.
Top Tracks: 1. Once in a lifetime 2. Listening Wind 3. The Overload
NERRRRRRRRRDS!
Boring
A new wave, experimental album that takes a lot of influence from African grooves and funk sounds, with an electronic twist helped along with the producing efforts of the prolific Brian Eno. The first half of the album is definitely the stronger side, with insane electronic loops coupled with afro-funk/rock beats that both made you want to get up and dance and feel somewhat familiar, but at the time totally fresh and accessible to the wider population. Best: Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On) Worst: The Overload 3.5 Stars
Significant yes but perhaps not consistently good throughout
Pretty weird, but funky in a good way. Once in a lifetime is a banger.
Decent album, but I see why Once In A Lifetime is the only one that stuck around
Pas tant mon genre
I like letting the days go by, but nothing else really sounds like anything to me
Yeah man was groovy on a kind of arthouse level. I certianly asked myself some questions!
I wasn't familiar with this album, apart from Once in a Lifetime - which is now culturally engrained. It's a good album, feels quite experimental, overall I enjoyed it, probably need several more listens to appreciated it more.
Good tight band .. much good listening here
An ok "3" for me
A decent album with a couple of bangers, but nothing that really got me going...
I'm most familiar with Once in Lifetime as this was always played early in MTVs life The rest of the album is pretty good. Some forward looking stuff that I don't think the masses were ready for
Too repetitive
🙊
les tetes qui parlent et parlent mais n’ecoutent jamais
S’alright innit
I was somewhat disappointed by this. I know the singles of course. The rest of my Talking Heads knowledge comes from Stop Making Sense which is the most fantastically energetic live performance. By contrast this felt a bit flat and lethargic. Not bad by any means but I went in expecting to have my socks blown off and they remained firmly on my toes
This all sounds very Talking Heads. There's nothing of the calibre of Psycho Killer or Road to Nowhere, but Once in a Lifetime comes close.
Remain in Light is a perfectly fun album that does start to get samey and a little annoying by the end. I dig the Talking Heads but this is definitely not one of my favorites. 3
Good first half, unnecessary second.
In my mind, Talking Heads hit a wide variety with their songs (or at least with the hits that I knew). They could go Psycho Killer, or they could go This Must Be the Place - both of which were equally good. This record falls somewhere in the middle, and I thought I would like it more than I actually do. Shame!
I like several of Talking Heads songs, but I’m not a fan of any of their albums as a whole. I think this is down to me not liking David Byrne’s voice. Not a bad album but just not one that I’d see myself coming back to. Standout tracks are ‘Once In A Lifetime’ and ‘Listening Wind’.
в целом хороший альбом. затянутые паттерны иногда очень наскучивают, иногда вводят в состояние легкого транса. не могу сказать, что работа вау, но попробовать послушать это точно стоит, что-то в этом есть...
Is the dove still alive? I forgot to write down.y listening notes to the previous album, tonight is the night from Neil Young. I liked it. Neil Young is always nice to listen to, although there are no big hits in this album and i did t know any of the songs. You should not say this is his sixth album? It could have been also his debut, because there are no songs yet that overleed the otgers. The title song is a nice song in the tradition of telling a story. The second song was instrumentally the most toch one. And Albuquerque was the best rocking song on this album. It was along this song that i found a wounded dove along walking in the pets farm. I hope she did survive, i told to the supervisor who tried to save it by calling the protection service for birds. And about this album of talking heads: it s Friday night now and a talking heads album is ideal to start the weekend with 😉. It s got its typical way of steady rythms and almost narrative and sometimes shouting way of singing.
Would probably be more enjoyable if on shrooms. Allegedly.
And you may find some songs thrown together onto an album and you may ask yourself 'How did they get here?'
why paint your face red when you can do it with computer graphics. this record has a lot to answer for
Heard of Talking Heads before, but never listened to any of their songs. Interesting music. Might listen more. 3/5
Weird but not weird enough to be fun. I thought it was overall pretty boring. I was optimistic since I really like the talking heads songs that I already knew.
Talking Heads style ! Born under punches Once in a lifetime Crosseyed and Painless Tout s'écoute, tout est spécial
Weirder than I remember
Interesting listen, but in a good way. I liked the first two thirds of the album where it was fun/funky/upbeat. The last two songs were too moody for me
Their first relatively poor album, and their last relatively good album.
Some great songs! 3.5/5
Interesting music to wash the walls to!
Talking Heads from Rhode Island, USA. They have FOUR albums on the 1001 list. Singles: --------------------------------------- Crosseyed and Painless (#20 US Dance with Once in a Lifetime) Once in a Lifetime (#14 UK, #20 US Dance With Crosseyed and Painless) Houses in Motion (#50 UK) Standouts: Once in a Lifetime, Born Under Punches, Others: Crosseyed and Painless, The Overload All the other songs are really good as well. There is nothing bad on this album. Rating: 3.5/5
Quite repetitive. Vocals are a little too quiet for me. Will have to revisit in the future. Highlight: -
Gillar ju de tidigaste bäst.
Not sure, experimental and cool. Didn't really enjoy it however and found myself skipping songs. 2.5
Second listen. I like new wave and a few Talking Heads songs, but for some reason this album has never really left an impression.
Nicht so meins. Tempo passt
