chill, haven't heard any other Neil Young albums besides this one
I like Neil Young, but if I wanted to listen to him I'd just put Harvest on. I'm not a huge huge fan (yet...)
Tell me why - it's fine nothing special and the guys singing is kinda annoying me After the Gold Rush - Thought this was an intro to the fairy tale of new york, I was dissapointed to hear this mans voice again, I hope this is the last time he shows up Only Love can break your heart - And your eardrums, this is like listening to some crap jazz but the main intrument stays the same and the singer said a racial slur before every sentence, not even entertaining at that point just sad Southern Man - Significant improvement get rid of that goddamn acoustic guitar, put it into the shredder and use it as kindling it makes a more interesting noise than whatever those previous songs were. WE LOVE THE KEYBOARD ( and the eletric guitar ) Till the morning comes - PLEASE DO NOT HAVE THAT GODDAMN ACOUSTIC GUITAR, the trumpet is there :bless: , listenable, tolerable Oh, Lonesome Me - I thought the guitar was shredded mr Young, why has it come back as a main stay? Bloody dickhead make your singing so I can listen to it and not regret my birth or add an instrument and become rock again please? Don't Let It bring you down - It really is bringing me down Birds - I flew away from this damnable song have more instruments for the love of god When You Dance I Can Really Love - You answered my prayers Mr Young this is not half bad I Believe in you - I retract any compliments Cripple Creek Ferry - I'm dissapointed in you Overal this ablum would've been better if he stuck to his blimming singing guitar justin beiber pretty boy act or kept the Rock inspired instruments which his voice fits much much better. The shit balances out with the cool so a solid and unmoving low 3
I enjoyed this, I must say that I didn't listen to the album as intently as I try to, so it's difficult to pick out a favourite, or indeed least favourite song. The music was nice as was the singing, beyond that it's hard to add much. This is on the upper end of three but I'd struggle to give it a four, perhaps if I'd listened better I may have been able to. 67/100 Score edited 11/06/26
Neil Young is undeniably an amazing artist. However I really don't like the way he sings in this album. Very whiny in the title track. Quite like Southern Man though. Nice instrumentation. Overall an underwhelming experience I suppose. Nothing that wrong with it, but certainly not amazing.
This album was definitely a good start to this project. Most songs were on the better side, with a few lower ratings.
Decent, not my favorite from Neil.
Really liked some of the lyrics I picked up on, could possibly really like some of the songs If I listen more
liked Till The Morning Comes , Birds, and I Believe in You. favorite from the album was till the morning comes or birds enjoyed the overall sound, though it was more folk / country than my typical taste. the whole album was kinda sad soundinh but i liked it
high 3!!! favs-Oh lonesome me, southern man, WYDYCRL, OLCBYH
Wanted to give up when the first song was some folk song writer crap - but then it got better. His voice is whiny indeed but the Southern Man is solid. Still I would never listen to this again.

Good album. Neil Young sounds like a bleating goat to me though.
This is just fine, good guitar
3.0 (34:32, 11 tracks, 3rd album, 1970) folk (country folk) Kind of a boring album. I've never been a huge fan of Neil's whiny voice. Neil has garnered much more respect over time than when this was released.
Not a fan of his voice. Some tracks better than others. I liked the more rockier/less countrier better. Probably won't listen again, but it wasn't bad. Didn't know any of the tracks.
I liked some songs however did not like it overall
His voice is awful...yet somehow compelling.
I like Neil Young as much as the next guy, but CLEARLY not as much as the makers of this list …. lol
Raw singer songwriter with some folk?
It’s fine. Nothing special and his voice gets a little annoying after a while
Very country-folk. Noah Kahan if he made music in the 70s. Love the instrumentals, not sure about the country vibe though.
Make me you feel like a sad, regretful old man.
I was looking forward to this album because I love CSNY! Some songs are really great (Oh Lonesome Me, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, When You Dance I Can Really Love stand out to me) but for the most part, I’m quite ambivalent to it. I think I much prefer the timbre of CSN(Y) as opposed to just Neil Young
yea this is just an album - if i thought "hmmm what is music", something like this would come up. which idk if that means it's good or if it means this album was bland enough for me to think it's stereotypical. ah, doesn't matter, i thought it had a good runtime for what it was so i can't hate it.
Usually, not really the biggest fan of this type of singer-songwriter folk sound, but this album is quite nice to listen to. Young's soft vocals pair quite well in this genre. At this stage of my life, this album doesn't really resonate with me; however, I see it growing as I grow older.
strong opening track. some tracks felt like they were missing something but idk what but it redeemed itself towards the end
actually good
Favourites: 1. Southern Man 2. When You Dance I Can Really Love 3. Only Love Can Break Your Heart Least Favourite: Cripple Creek Ferry
Loved this more than I thought I would, neve really went for Neil Young in my early years but maybe we've all grown up a bit since then
would be a good album to study to. favs : only love can break your heart, birds, southern man
Enjoyed. Wouldn’t listen again.
*1970 *Southern Man was the big hit here. *Solid album. Listened a few times. RATING - 7.5/10
Excellent songwriting, but man that voice just whines like a dentist’s drill
This was innocuously good, just fine for making dinner to and preparing for a trip. Maybe if I would have listened to the lyrics and stuff, it would have left more of an impression? I'll never know, since not once in my life has the answer to question, "What would I like to listen to now?" been Neil Young, and that is unlikely to change now.
Fave track: Southern Man
Great opening for an album unfortunately contains some mid album filler. Not sure if this belongs on the list Neil Young greatest hits is required for everyone in their collection.
Idk 3/5
Maybe Neil is wearing on me, maybe I'm just tired today
I liked that it was a shorter album. But I wouldn’t say it was entirely for me.
I started appreciating Neil young more as I got older. I liked this album for the most part. I think the worst song on this album was the title track.
Neil young the goat
Neil without Crazy Horse is like peanut butter without jelly
Awwww. When it came out, I was enthralled. After a month or two I was sick of it. That feeling has stuck for over 50 years.
I liked a couple of songs, but honestly, it's too straight for me and the lyrics don't resonant. How many times does Neil Young need to reference an old mane? :) I'm not the demographic for this album.
Sympa sans plus
Je l'avais deja écoute et j'avais oublié de noter, quelques bonnes pistes mais assez oubliable je suis pas fan de Neil young 3/5
Vintage Neil Young. Mostly nice tracks.
A very country style album but lacks hard hitting solos and lyrics in my opinion
I listened to the spotify preview and meant to listen to it later but maybeI will it sounded good
1855-present.
It’s an ok album. Neil Young’s voice takes some getting used to; it is very unique to be sure. But it works. Southern Man, probably his most famous song, is the best track. Nothing else really stood out to me. I enjoyed the album overall. 3
3 Stars (8/15)
3.0
Han KAN ju sjunga bra. Varför gör han inte det på alla låtar?? Många bra delar dock. Allmänt mysigt album i övrigt, jag gillade det. Får jag bestämma lyssnar jag hellre på Steely Dan dock.
Classic Neil. Some hits and misses
I liked this, and his voice, more than I was expecting
Musical this is great, but I struggle with Young’s voice 3/5
hard to listen to because of his voice...pretty bad
Not a big fan of Neil Young and this is probably my least favourite I've heard from, some fine stuff here still though
I’m not crazy about Neil Young… and this did very little to move the needle for me. That said, I recognize Neil’s contributions and importance. It’s just not for me. Southern man didn’t need him ‘round anyhow.
Some real bangers in this. Neil young sounds really good here.
If there were more songs like Southern Man, I’d probably be giving a higher score. I definitely prefer the more guitar driven tracks, those that bring that fuzzy guitar and sound a bit heavier. Perhaps repeated listens would help me appreciate the slower songs more but as much as I like slower more folky songs, I much prefer Young when he rocks out. Only Love Can Break Your Heart is a good song, and I’ve always liked the Saint Etienne version, and listening to both today, I can honestly say they’ve really made that song their own, it’s a good cover. *Don’t Let It Bring You Down* had me running off to listen to *Teardrop* by **Massive Attack**, I swear the vocal melodies are the same.
Encore un autre album de Neil Young... Ça fait combien que j’écoute ? Il m’en reste combien à écouter ? Misère... En gros, c’était pas vraiment mauvais, juste pas pour moi. Désolé, mon Neil.
Album No. 0053 on my list. Never listened to much of Neil Young’s work before, don’t know why actually. “After the Gold Rush” was my first full album listen. I liked some songs, but not all. Solid mixture of folk, pop, and rock. “Southern Man”, “Don’t Let It Bring You Down”, and “Birds” were my favorites. Not exactly 4 stars, but close. 3/5 stars.
I liked the mix of a slightly edgier folk/rock sound, but still don’t love Neil Young’s voice. It comes off as too whiny/nasally for me.
3 stars
Pleasant enough album but I always feel like Young has always been the opposite of his name and not in a good way. I prefer his teaming up with Crosby, Stills and Nash. His singing often borders on whining and I can't relate to his lyrics either but yeah, not a bad album in the grand scheme of things.
I've never considered myself a NY fan, but this one wasn't as bad as I was dreading. Kinda bluesy at times, sometimes reminded me of Fleetwood Mac (which I also have only heard the hits of). Overall, positive vibes.
3.3
every neil young song sounds the same so theres no point in ranking them
It was fine. Running out of things to say for mid albums that didn’t sway me one way or another.
Good music, struggle with his voice.
I still like harvest better, but this is a great album. Classic brings me back to my teenage years.
Never really listened to Neil Young before, but I kinda knew what to expect. Enjoyed this. Didn’t blow my world apart, but it was entertaining enough.
Enjoyed it, solid Neil Young
Pretty cool. The voice took some getting used too, but good tracks, couple of nice surprises too. Southern Man I really liked.
later
Meh
It sounds very folky. Sometimes his voice changes to higher pitch. I had to listen closely because it sounded like it could be a different person.
Tiene cositas. Me gustó. 6/10
While it was alright, it was a little too uninteresting for me. Lyrics wise it did stand out a lot
Neil Young is definitely one of my favourite artists. And After the Gold Rush contains some of my favourite Neil Young songs. Unfortunately there are also a few tunes on here that even I got bored with pretty quickly. So yeah, prolific as he is, is no guarantee that all his work is fantastic. He's still amazing though.
Not for me.
No private session used for Spotify. Neil writes some great songs, but I do have some issues when he goes to his high pitched whiny voice. I listened to it a couple times, worth listening to again.
*Young's voice on the first few tracks is grating but it gets better across the album. The harmony vocals are a high point of the album. *Southern Man is a great track *This is good musicianship but doesn't excite me enough to give more than a 3.
I know a few Neil Young songs, but haven't heard a lot. Tell Me Why I actually knew only from the cover that Hayden did. I'm a huge Hayden fan and I know Neil Young is a big influence of his. Oh Southern Man, I knew this one too, used to play on the radio. I like the folky and rocky sides, but the country sounding stuff not so much.
Lots of sort of chanty, small note range choruses, good guitar in the background. Not a bad voice but not a traditionally good one either. Would perhaps also be suited to rock screaming. Sort of wish there was a 3.5 star
His voice reaches some silly high notes hear and it turns a serious song into something laughable.
10/8/25. Maybe my favorite of Neil Young's work. Straightforward folk style music and very good songwriting. Every song flows into each other nicely.
454/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
It’s funny that this comes up the day after I said I didn’t like the vocals on the last album we reviewed. I know there are quite a few people who feel that way and Neil Young. That said, I enjoy this album, not as much as some of his others, but this is a solid 3+ stars for me.
3.0 - Ok
Ok
a bit boring innit
Not really my vibe but has some classics
Don’t care for his voice. All songs sound the same!
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would but his voice definitely got tiresome quickly lol
A smooth voice and good guitar playing can get you a long way when it comes to music for me. This album is a good "put on in the background while reading in autumn" album. While that sounds extremely specific (and it is) its also a genre that gets a lot of playtime for me about 3 months of the year dna I can see myself listening to this again in that context.
Not bad, I just don’t like his voice. Southern Man is a great song.
Fav Tracks: "Southern Man" and "Don't Let It Bring You Down"
More singer-songwriter stuff. This time with extra classic rock. My opinion on this genre will never change. It’s fine to listen to but it’s not something I will ever seek out
My Dad didn’t like Neil Young so somehow I made it to my mid-twenties without exploring beyond the ubiquitous radio hits. Upon discovering them, his records went into heavy rotation right through my thirties. Currently, I almost never put them on, and have been forming increasingly negative opinions of them. Looks like I’m seeing more of my old man in me. ATGR isn’t even my fifth favourite NY record. Cripple Creek Ferry is an ATJ though(sack tap Dan).
Not Young's best work.
i will never fully grasp the magic of neil young
Listenable.
I got Harvest earlier this week, which is kind of a bummer because I can't help but compare the two! I liked this, found it an easy and enjoyable listen, but the songs on Harvest resonated with me more. I'd say this is a 3.5 for me, but to keep a distinction between the two, I'll keep this at a 3 (and Harvest at a 4).
Had its moments, another one of those that would grow on you after a few listens. Top 3 are southern man, only love can break your heart and after the gold rush.
Rating: 6/10 Southern Man is a masterpiece, everything else is just decent.
Está bien, pero no tiene ninguna canción que me haya impresionado. He hecho una segunda escucha de las más conocidas según Tidal. Me he guardado "Tell my why". Aunque teniendo en cuenta que le doy dos estrellas a casi cualquier cosa, pues este tendrá que irse a las 3.
Not my favorite, not the worst.
Really wanted to like this one but it just wasn't for me. The lyrics and songwriting are great no doubt at all. Maybe I should try other albums to get more sense as I'd never listened before.
Think I prefer this to Harvest but I still wouldn’t say I’m a massive fan of Neil Young. Just okay
Nice vibes for morning coffee. Lovely storyteller with unique voice filled with emotion.
Nice chill music for morning coffee and puzzles
Good album but not his best stuff.
The first times I listened to the album I couldn’t really connect with it, however, over time it has become one of the albums I remember the most and have gradually made part of my life. The heartfelt, introspective work is evident, as is the emotional depth it contains. Perhaps it was its simplicity that initially made me think it wasn’t a great work, but its emotional honesty and its ability to capture a sense of unease have kept it present for me. I particularly praise the criticism expressed in songs like Southern Man and I hold on to tracks I still dance to and sing along with weekly: When You Dance I Can Really Love.
Preferred to my other Neil young album. Would do 2.5 stars if possible
Thought I would love this one. Not so much. It wasn’t bad, but his voice just kind of grates on some of the songs, and several sound like unfinished thoughts.
Because of this list, I am learning that I am not a big fan of Neil Young. His voice annoys me at times, but there are enough good songs on this one that its not a bad album!
3.5* Enjoyed it but his voice can be hard to adapt to!
Classic but not my type
Kivan kuuloinen laulajana. Mikäs siinä
top3: - southern man - birds - i believe in you
Classic Neil young. Beautiful songs, but i've never fallen in love with his voice.
Nice but no awesome
Hey him again. Its fine.
If you ever find yourself wandering around the Pioneer Square area of downtown Seattle there's an old, but mostly nondescript, building across from Occidental Park that, if you were to walk in the front door, you will find yourself in a national park. The Klondike Gold Rush national park is located in Alaska. But they have an 'outpost' in Seattle that's pretty great to stumble into. It has park rangers and all. Assuming it's still there in our now-fascist America, it's worth a stop if you find yourself in that part of the world and you want to learn more about what happened both before and after the gold rush. Oh...the album. It's Neil. If you like Neil, you like this album. I like Neil. I like this album. It's not my favorite Neil album. But it's nice. A nice Neil album.
Perhaps I’m a philistine, but Neil Young is one of those classic artists that just kind of passed me by. He’s no Dylan or Cohen, but I’ve always grouped him in with those poetish folk/whatever singers of the 60s and 70s. Some people can’t handle Dylan or Cohen because of the croaky, out of tune way they often sing. For me, it’s Neil Young’s high voice that initially turns me off, like Daniel Johnston on helium. This album makes me think it might have been something my Uncle Phil listened to while getting high and beating up hippies while also sort of being a hippie himself. ¨Southern Man¨ could have been written about probably any male member of my family over the age of 40, and also a younger cousin. It’s an unpleasant surprise when you find out Neil Young is Canadian, almost a betrayal. The music itself is pleasant, but nothing musically or lyrically grabbed me by the throat apart from ¨Southern Man,¨ perhaps because I myself am a Southern man. Any song could have been on the soundtrack to a Judd Apatow movie- is this a good thing? Bad? You be the judge. Best songs: ¨Southern Man,¨ ¨Only Love Can Break Your Heart,¨¨Birds¨
Till the morning comes was the only song that really stood out. I’m not a big Neil young fan besides heart of gold and remained average for me
Good One
Not a fan of his voice
Didn't really know what to expect going into this, once again another artist I had heard so much about but never delved into. Starting mellow and soft, I found 'Tell Me Why' charming and warm, but the slower more subtle songs weren't just as appealing. An enjoyable listen :) Top Picks: Tell Me Why Southern Man Don't Let it Bring You Down When You Dance I Can Really Love Probably evens out to a 3
The title track has a nice flugelhorn section. "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" is better with a bigger personnel behind it. "Southern Man" rocks. This is what Neil is all about! Okay, this is all pretty pleasant but I like the songs better with a rhythm section backing him up. Highlights: "Southern Man". 3.5 stars.
А це гарний фолковий Ніл Янг. Приємний альбом.
Although it's not a genre I listen to, I appreciate his lyrics.
I am always simultaneously exhausted by Neil Young while also loving his music. There's an irritating pretention to After the Gold Rush that stems very directly from the fact that it was written for an unproduced movie about how a flood in Topanga Canyon would be some great global loss. Between the always excruciating snobbery of Southern Man and mother nature's silver seed in After the Gold Rush, I just can't deal with this album despite how good some of the songs are.
ніл янг, сорі, але в тебе такий неприємний голос... але текстово було цікаво, на жаль не було часу краще пройнятися сенсами, бо здається, що тут треба довше посидіти подумати над альбомом, тому оцінка може змінитися
This is fine. I mean, it's objectively quite good, I guess, but I'm not the biggest Neil Young fan so it's hard for me to really evaluate it.
I had high expectations for this album. But honestly, most of the songs are dull, boring, and whiny. "Southern Man" is one of the few tracks that actually stuck with me and felt solid. Overall, it’s a bit of a snooze fest.
Quite short and easy listening, any track you don’t enjoy will be over in 45 seconds anyway. Not my favorite album of Mr. Young’s but there’s a clear appeal. Southern Man, Tell Me Why, Till the Morning Comes, Dont Let it Bring You Down notably enjoyable. Maybe I just don’t like harmonicas…
Listened in the truck via YouTube music. Learned he’s with Daryl Hannah while listening to this one. Solid Neil Young record.
Nice album but I like his other stuff more
Good
annoying voice but nice music
I can always happily listen to a Neil Young album but never truly invest in it and love it. His voice is always haunting and emotional and engaging. But I honestly have never listened to an album of his and then wanted to listen to it again.
Few good tracks on this album
a brilliant songwriter and good guitarist. A few classics and some not so great tracks. His rendition of Hank Williams' "Oh Lonesome Me" was terrible.
rock
It was kind of boring.
Not bad! Very standard Neil Young. It's a good background album but nothing insane or outstanding to me.
This is a really hard one to rate. Neil is a great songwriter. But a terrible singer - that reedy falsetto is just terrible and I'm finding it so hard to hear anything else. Some lovely horn work on the title track, and the guitar work is understated but often quite awesome. As demonstrated though by Saint Etienne - these songs can be vastly improved by letting someone else sing them. I'm torn on 2 or 3 stars.
Good background music I guess
Good stuff. Neil in his early prime.
Not my favorite vocalist but it was a good album.
I don't remember half of it, but it also makes it one of the better Young albums.
Pretty average album, nothing amazing, nothing terrible.
Not a bad album. I want to preface that as saying that young is a sacred cow for a lot of folks. I don't care for his voice one iota. I've seen him live. I get that he can write. He isn't for me. Despite all that this is solid.
Southern Man
Solid stuff.
can’t complain but nothing was totally outstanding. solid good 3
I understand why people love Neil and his music but his voice grates after a very short time
not bad
Good one
5/10 Neil Young writes some great tracks. He can play a mean guitar too. But when he writes songs that push towards the top of his range, I find it genuinely hard to listen to. I can hear in places that there's a decent song underneath it all, but it's like bringing me a beautiful lasagne, all the layers cooked to perfection, and then instead of a generous grating of parmesan, you pull out one of those foot skin graters and get to work on your bunions all over my meal. When he's in a lower register, things are generally better, and in songs where he's not as exposed, things can get pretty good. That being said, apart from a couple of tracks here and there, I felt this was a much weaker effort than On The Beach. I feel like this album lacks a little bit in momentum and consistency, and there's not a particular thread going through it that I can grab hold of. I think things are not necessary helped by the production, as there are a few examples of tracks that lean heavily on the treble end of things and can seem a bit clashy up top and empty down below. I might pick a few tracks from this to return to once in a while, but overall the album just doesn't grab me. Tell Me Why - An ok track to start us off. Nothing vastly exciting, but there's some nice guitar work here. Overall it's a bit too trebley and lacking in weight for me. After the Gold Rush - This is a better song, but boy is his voice nasal and annoying here, which distracts from it quite a lot. When he pushes to the top of his range, it just doesn't gel with me at all. Only Love Can Break Your Heart - This has got some nice harmonies in it, but it's a bit plodding and dull and a bit too staccato in delivery across the board. Southern Man - This is much better. It flows, it has weight and there's a good groove underpinning it. Some of the guitar playing is quite loose, but it's fun and works. There's a real swagger here and I like it. Till The Morning Comes - Ah, his voice is back at a better register here. This is quite nice. But it's over already. Oh, Lonesome Me - Another good track. It's got emotional weight, his vocal is generally working at his lower register, which is better, and I really like the subtle use of driven guitars and the little harmonica flourishes. It's a well structured song too. Don't Let It Bring You Down - This has got a nice lilt to the rhythm. The sound is nice and full and there's a good dynamic between sections. His voice is still a bit annoying in places though and it sort of feels like it never arrives at where it was heading. Birds - This is good. His vocal is just the right amount of frail for the song. The piano is nice and there are a couple of interesting chord changes here and there to keep things from being too obvious. When You Dance I Can Really Love - There's quite a cluttered sound to this and it never really lands on anything I can get my teeth into. It kind of struts around like a boxer at a weigh-in. Plenty of strut and swagger, but no punches will be thrown. I Believe In You - This has got some great elements, but again, his voice just doesn't gel with me particularly for this kind of ballad. I can see it working with a different vocalist, and I still think it's ok. Cripple Creek Ferry - A much better fit for his voice, this has got another nice lilt to the rhythm and the harmonies are nice too. Oh, and it's over.
First impression pre listen: After I've had a couple of his albums appear before on the list, I think I'm starting to get his schtick. He's a rocker, he's a lyricist and he's a country boy. Going into this album with those excact expectations. My previous experience with his output has left me a bit lukewarm on him, as those albums had some streaks of boredom to them. Hopefully this one goes by quickly. Individual track notes: Tell Me Why Pleasant and inoffensive. Good harmonies. Very pretty guitar playing. Don't really get the lyrics, though they sound pretty nice at least. Decent. 3.5/5 After the Gold Rush Effective lyrics, paints a plethora of emotionally resonant images that are enhanced by the somber instrumentation. Neil's unusual voice gives the song a vulnerable and naked quality. Decent. 3.5/5 Only Love Can Break Your Heart The progression on the verses does a good job at setting up the chorus. Great harmonies. Sonically it's a bit too one dimensional for my tastes. Kinda lost me Average. 2.5/5 Southern Man Is this the song Skynyrd references in Sweet Home Alabama? Makes a bold claim about moral hypocrisy. Ominous instrumental. The lyrics are very direct and do an amazing job at calling out injustices in the southern USA. The guitar solos are a bit aimlessly long for my tastes. Distinct bassline. Mostly memorable for the striking imagery of the cracking bullwhips. Great. 4.5/5 Till the Morning Comes A sweet flowery track with a good atmosphere. Too short to count for much. Unrated/5 Oh, Lonesome Me Old praire vibes. Well implemented harmonica. Boring misery anthem with a tired premise. Dislike. 2/5 Don't Let It Bring You Down I like the "it's only castles burning" imagery. This whole sequence contains some interesting wisdom. Other than that I really appreciate the clearness of the bass. Fine. 3/5 Birds Pretty sweet piano. Beautiful harmonies on the chorus. Just alround a simple pretty song with some resonant lyrics and a lot of emotion. Good. 4/5 When You Dance I Can Really Love An enjoyable though a bit unremarkable piece of Southern Rock. Doesn't exactly do anything wrong, there's just not a lot that immediately sticks out about it. Fine. 3/5 I Believe in You I'm bored. I guess there's a lot of melancholy and vulnerability to it, but it doesn't particularly excite me. There are some piano phrases here I really like. Average. 2.5/5 Cripple Creek Ferry Love the folkiness and traditional presentation of the track. Simple fun lyrics. Catchy chorus. Fine. 3/5. Final review: This feels like something I SHOULD enjoy more than I actually do. As each track rolls by I feel more and more impressed by the lyricism on this thing, where it feels like he always treads carefully on the line between complex and understandable. Leading to an intelectually satisfying yet emotionally resonant experience. I think his voice, as grating as some might find it somehow fits perfectly with the lyrical style, giving them a sort of imperfect and human presentation. But at the same time when the full picture comes together I generally just shrug and move on. For some reason, bar a few notable exceptions (Southern Man, Birds) nothing sticks. I like the harmonies, and the instrumentation is great for what it is, but I ended up feeling somewhere between ambivalent and bored for the most of the album's runtime. I come out of this experience the same way as with his other albums on this list: Neil Young is a very talented songwriter from an analytical standpoint, but his music generally requires a VERY specific mood for me to get into. Bonus points for Southern Man, aswell as a bit more as I can see it growing on me. 3/5
#653. Neil Young is a pretentious twat, but there's no denying he knows how to make a good song or two. Unfortunately that's about it though, none of his albums seem to have more than one or two good songs, and this one isn't different. 3/5: fine
Not a fan but mad respect. Neil is a good song writer but I can only take small doses.
For me this one was a slow burn on first listen. It finishes really strong on side 2. I started really enjoying it starting with Don't Let It Bring You Down and was sold right after with Birds. Anytime the lyrics get sort of esoteric I kind of check out, but the more down to earth and specific Young gets the more I enjoy it. On second list I think it's really just that I don't connect well with the first couple tracks. I can't say I won't skip tracks when listening again, but I will come back to it later on. I can really hear the influences this album (and Young in general) has on some other artists I listen to now. Liked: Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Southern Man, Don't Let It Bring You Down, When You Dance I Can Really Love
That's not my taste in music - But ok
Good music, but nothing a fave of the singing voice 🤷♀️
Ikke dårlig. Litt tam.
Nu ska jag vara sneil och ge Neil ett medelbetyg.
♫ Listening to "Southern Man" by Neil Young (After the Gold Rush, 1970) ♫
Short but sweet, Neil makes the 1001 Must Hear List again. This time, Southern Man carries him there with some help from After the Gold Rush and Only Love Can Break Your Heart. Enjoyable listen. L = (2.9*s) a few songs with piano didn’t sound like Neil. J = (2.8*s) Neil has a string of great albums through the 70s, we’ll be hearing from him again.
I expected this album to make the list. It's got a couple of Neil's biggest hits and has a lot of his signature folk rock tone through the full duration. It's probably the format of Neil Young that I'm most familiar with and hits home the hardest. It's a solid entry that goes down smooth. Although I'm a fan, I'd favor significantly cutting down Neil Young's representation on this list but I think After The Gold Rush has a solid argument and would be worthy to remain. 3.36 stars
Neil Young has always been a political activist and regardless of your position about his views, it's undeniable that this has generally resulted in a lot of great songs. Whether it is Ohio, Rockin In a Free World (my personal favorite), or Alabama, he's had a ton of impact through his music. That alone has also meant that Neil is rarely boring. Unfortunately, rarely doesn’t equal never, as is very evident on this album, as much of it played out as very dull for me. The dichotomy of his two protest anthems on this is really a microcosm for the rest of this record. Yes, Southern Man is a great song and impactful, but that's balanced out by After The Gold Rush, which is less on both fronts. Of course, the latter might be worse simply because he sings in his higher register the entire song and that's where is voice is the weakest when it's not supported by others in a harmony. Regardless, I just didn't like that song at all. There were other high points on this album. Most notably, I loved Don't Let It Bring You Down, which was backed by some great acoustic guitar and piano. A song I was instantly drawn to. But these great songs were too few and far between. I had previously listened to Rust Never Sleeps, and that's a far superior album to this one. This was average at best for my ear.
Mange gode melodier og harmonier på dette albumet. Dessverre har jeg lite sans for når NY gjør til stemmen sin. Liker best stemmen slik den er på «Bird».
Not my favourite of Neil's albums.
Would be so much better if Neil Young didn't sing these songs. His voice is not my favorite. Extra point for Southern Man.
Listened to this and his first two albums today. In general I like and respect him but don’t love him. But it’s nice to get his to know his music better
liked it more than harvest, and probably the only neil young album i would return to in the future. still, 3.5/5.
Prelude to Harvest
Alright
I don’t really like many Neil young songs
Pretty good album. Don’t love it enough to return to it that often
I don't love Neil Young, I think he's a bit whiny and derivative. That may be because this album is 55 years old and everyone and their nephew was inspired by it, but I'm not sure. It's an okay listen, great vibe and politically conscious - I'm just not enamored I'm afraid
3.5
Super mid, Neil. Far inland from the perfect On the Beach. I suppose this is meant to be Laurel Canyon disillusionment, and it works here and there. But his voice is pushing somewhere past annoying - it can be wonderful at times - not here, the songs are desultory, and it all feels slight and barren. Half assed? Two star album bumped to three for the righteous fuck you of Southern Man. Skynyrd wrote a much better song, but fuck all that racist Lost Cause romanticism. There ain't much to country livin': sweat, piss, jizz, and blood.
Listened to this in the background and was surprised at how young Neil young sounded and also how many ballads he did in the piano! Enjoyed it.
There's some iconic songs here and Neil Young is obviously a legend, but I just can't get get passed his voice. I'm sorry Neil, it's me, not you but I don't think we're a match.
There's a handful of songs I LOVE on this album that I already knew. There's a few that I will need to listen to again. I listened to this while doing work, but I enjoyed it most of the way through.
Wasn't sure at first, but it grew on me
Klassiker, holder seg bra.
Algunas canciones muy buenas otras planas.
A mellow, perfect segway in his first few albums between the rock-heavy Everyone Knows This is Nowhere and the masterpiece that is Harvest. Couple of legendary songs, but more a glimpse into what was coming next with Harvest. Neil was such a prodigy at this age, having already made a name for himself with Buffalo Springfield, CSNY and not too many other artists can boast the string of about his first five or six records in a row out of the gate. What else is there to say about this ICON who is still writing chapters of his own book, today?
I have very few feelings on this
Overall, it is a nice, cohesive album. The vocals sound nice and raw-ish and are complemented really well by an interesting ensemble of instruments, with acoustic and electric guitars, piano, harmonica and brass instruments underlining the layered vocals. The sound does shift from a more upbeat 70s intro, to rocky songs with sharp electric guitar solos that contrast the usual, softer instrumentals to softer but still fun piano pieces and even more melancholic harmonica songs. For me personally it does get a little too folkey and bluesy at some point but there are some nice songs and overall the album is enjoyable and offers that 70s folk-rock sound than can be fun, too.
It's not really my thing, but I can recognise that this is pretty solid for what it is. At first I wasn't really sure, but I warmed to it more as it went on, and particularly to his voice. Southern Man is the real stand-out on here.
Went like 700 albums without any Neil Young, and I think I've gotten 4 of his albums in the last month or two. He's good, good vibe, lyrics are deep. But every now and then he's got his whiney tamber to his voice that I don't love yet. He's been growing on me. I'm going to listen again
Solid...lazy afternoon music kinda..
love his voice and the type of music he makes it always calms me and is a joy to listen to
I mean, I could listen to this album at any time and enjoy it. It's a Neil Young album through and through, by and large enjoyable. Just doesn't really rise above, has to be listened to as an album (except for Southern Man I guess, but mostly known imo for what that spawned). Liked it, didn't love it.
Good easy listening and classic. Did not really move me.
Don't know that I'll revisit this - his voice isn't something I can stand on it's own. Interestingly enough, though, I like CSNY so go figure. 3/5
Was pleasantly enjoying the first half of this album way more than I thought I would but by the second half I felt like there wasn't enough going on to keep my interest. A shame but honestly not a bad listen. Favourites - Tell Me Why, Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Not really my thing but, wasn't a bad listen overall.
I like this album. It’s quiet and chilled, and I like his quiet low-fi rage. It’s not as good as some of his other offerings but it’s worth a listen. His voice is either something you like or something you don’t, and I like it because of its unpretentiousness. His lyrics are vague and indirect swipes at the political and the personal alike. Definitely an album I revisit every once in a while, but not his best effort for me.
relaxing i like it
Immaculate coastal grandmother summer vibes but none of the songs really stood out
I love Neil Young: https://www.vulture.com/article/neil-young-ticketmaster-robert-smith.html Him + Robert Smith try not to be based challenge (impossible) And this gets a 4 purely because of the album itself Edit Apr 15 2026: 4 --> 3
Some good songs but didn’t like the vocals in some places
It's a good album. Neil Young can be hit or miss with me. Some of his tunes feel unnatural and off-putting, mostly due to his off tune voice, but several of his songs scratch an itch that only Neil can reach.
Not bad, kinda just a quiet jam.
I used to rather enjoy a bit of early Neil but perversely as I age and mellow I’m liking it less and less. This is a good album but I far prefer the overall feel of Harvest and for me that would have been enough for this list.
nothing that I'll listen to again
I'm torn between liking the music and being annoyed by his voice
Only on this bitch of an earth do we get 2 Neil Young albums in a week. How many is it now in total? How many of his albums are on this list?? Not including CSN&Y, I like their stuff a lot more in general. I'm done airing my grievances, how's the album? It's marginally better. The best songs are sadly the ones that utilize the CSN&Y harmonization, heard on the closer "Cripple Creek Ferry". "Tell Me Why" is a well written song with a vocal melody that just makes sense, I like the way it moves up and down. There's a slight bit more variety on here too, like the Springsteenish piano on the title track. But that's about where the good ends. There's still a bit too much pathetic woe-is-me going on here, and I swear his voice is even more shrill on this project. JUST barely does enough to get 3 stars
3.5 stars. Not my favorite Neil Young, was a little boring and sounded too much the same. Felt like it needed variety and different pacing. Standout was "Birds".
This is a genuinely good folk album and I appreciate its quality. Simple music done well with good lyrics. But I am not a fan of Neil Young’s vocals and its pacing is a bit too ponderous, even for folk. So while I know it’s good it’s not really for me.
i get why this is important but on some of these tracks neil sounds like a muppet fr
I actually really like some of the songs on this album, and I wish I like Neil Young more (he’s playing at Glastonbury this year after all), but I just find his voice a bit grating. I guess it’s like marmite.
Hard to get into after previously getting a Jimi Hendrix album Mellow and mournful. Some good songs but didn’t grab me as much as I thought it would
Once again, a transitional work from a great artist, but one with a ton of promise. The genesis of “Harvest” is here while Neil toys with some country in his compositions, and he’s keeping everything relatively short compared to some of the deeper jams with Crazy Horse. There’s some absolute gems on this album but it’s definitely not his best and leaves a bit to be desired.
Wasn't as into this as Harvest, there are some good songs but there's also more here I didn't like. Lots of songs with a drone that doesn't do the album any favours. Still good but wouldn't really listen to the majority again.
A 70’s classic…. Did not enjoy much as previous listens to though….
This may be the 50th Neil Young album on this project, or I may be dramatic. You choose. After the Gold Rush is Neil Young's typical genres, folk and country, and shows exactly why he's so talented. He creates an easy album that can increase the tempo to be jaunty or sentimental. His songwriting and lyrics are great and evocative, as always. Some aspects, like the higher voice Young used in the title track, were unappealing to me, but I eased into it over time.
Here's the thing. I definitely support Neil Young being on this list. And I can even understand why he has so many albums on here. But I am getting tired at this point. And this album felt very mid, especially to someone who is tired of Neil Young -- it was very ballady and very sleepy. The thing about Neil Young is that usually what I deem to be his worst is still miles better than a lot of what pops up on this project. So Neil Young, take your 3 and get out of here. I hope I've churned through the majority (if not all) of your albums on here.
Some good some dull
Sometimes Neil's voice is very whiney And grating to me. And that definitely how I felt the first bit of the album. It gets better. But he sounds so whiney for the first big chunk of this album.
Pretty good. Neil Young's continues to be weird, though it definitely grows on me the more I listen to it. Some of these songs were much better than others
The dude is a great songwriter, but sometimes the cartoonish vocals make me feel like I’m listening to an SNL parody.
Good
Not a folk music fan but lyrically, I can appreciate Neil Young. In its time, I can see this being an important album. His voice is like Tom Waits, it’s either off putting from the beginning and you tap out or you come to appreciate the emotion that drives it.
I’m a big fan of jazz, so this album was very pleasant to listen to.
Pretty nice, some unique stuff and a good experience to listen to. Would enjoy this while actively listening or while chilling out.
3.8
The first half of this album had me certain that I was not going to be giving it a very good rating. I found some of the high vocals to be hard to listen to, and I wasn't really vibing with any of the songs. However, my entire view shifted on the second half. From there, I really enjoyed all of the songs. They were beautiful and soothing, with Birds being my favorite track of the album. I will definitely revisit this album at some point, but with how little I enjoyed the first few songs I couldn't rate it above a 3 upon my first couple of listens.
When I was in college, Dana Carvey had a comedy special (can't remember what it was called) where he did a bit called "Every Neil Young Song You've Ever Heard" and proceeded to do a dead on perfect Neil Young impression with the following song lyrics: "Dead dog dying in a ditch, cigarette smoker has an itch. Secret whores with ancient vices, Lucky's has the lowest prices. I'm getting higher...getting higherrrrrrrrrr....end the world." Still one of my favorite bits. I have absolutely no idea where I'm going with this. I guess this is fine. I don't really love Neil Young and his voice hurts my ears most of the time.
Not a huge Neil Young fan great songwriter, but his voice generally grates on me. With that being said, this was an enjoyable album.
Absolute classic..but he has at least ten Better releases
Sort of old country album - decent if in that mood
So unfortunately my issue is that I just can't stand this much of Neil Young's voice. It's a shame because a lot of the tracks on this album are well written, excellently performed, and stunningly recorded and produced. Case in point: "southern man" which is a great track but by the time I got to it I'd already had enough Neil and still had ⅔ of the album left to go. Hardest one to rate so far because I think it's a good album, I just don't like it.
Didn't blow my dick off like Harvest did
Overall impression: unique vocals, simple instrumentation, and nice mix of upbeat and slower songs. Not my favorite voice, though. Tell Me Why: Twangy guitar, simple instrumentation, different than a lot of what I listen to. His voice sounds young, too. After the Gold Rush: Novel to hear an artist pushing towards the edge of their range. I like that this song has a story to it. Modern songs don't do as much storytelling, which is a bit of shame. When You Were Young: Vaguely familiar, maybe? Nice vocal harmonies. Southern Man: Liking guitar on this one. First song with drums? Favorite song so far, I think. Till the Morning Comes: Meh, not a big fan. Oh, Lonesome Me: Child of Kermit and John Denver? Is that you? Don't Let It Bring You Down: Okay I'd really like someone to cover this who isn't Neil Young, because the songs are fun but his voice is just not up my alley. Birds: Such a different tone, both vocally and lyrically. Short but so sweet. When You Dance I Can Really Love: Fun title for a fun, upbeat song. I Believe in You: I believe in falling asleep at 5pm in the office, because that's what this song is doing to me. Cripple Creek Ferry: Very random song - kinda like it because of that.
A five-star musician. A five-star storyteller. But so lecturey. So judgy. Mr. Fucking Knowitall over here.
num sei
nao aguento mais rock pqp cade os psytrance os hiphop os
13/1001 Back to back Neil Young album and 3rd in the first 13 albums. I don’t hate this guy, but I don’t want to hear him again at least until I’m in the 100s. (I know between CSN&Y, Buffalo Springfield and all his other work he has 9 albums on this list, that seems excessive). I feel the same about this album as the last 2 NY albums, and most likely the next 6, its not bad music, just not my vibe and his voice is too whiny. The very first note out of his mouth on this album was pitch perfect annoying whine Young. He doesn’t always hold the overly nasally pitch, and it made for a stronger song. He’s writes good lyrics, far above most. Props to Neil for a long career of making music people love and having meaning in his lyrics. Now please, give me something else for the next several weeks, actually months.
Another Neil Young record ? well I prefer this one a lot more than "On the beach" but I just think his music and his singing just aren't my thing. 5,5/10
While it was OK, I didn't find it earth shattering nor exceptional in any way. A pity: I wanted to like this album.
He's obviously a gifted songwriter. Those high notes though, yikes. Southern Man was the highlight.
есть Нил Янг и хорошо
Neeeeiiiiillllll
So chli folk Musig. Chli langwiilig. Stecht ned so use. Aber Guete vibe
Mehh, ikke så spennende album egt., blir litt for gammelt. Koselig men ikke spesielt bra imo.
Prefer when Neil is rockin
It was ok, I can understand why people like it, it just wasn’t my cup of tea
Highlights: Southern Man, Don’t let it bring you down
tell me why meega schöne folk country whatever super. harmonies im refrain schöön. old enough to repaint and young eniugh to sell seiter? heavy. after the goldrush er het sone höööchi stimm hey. chönti biitz nervig werde de klang. aber s lied isch super. only love can break your heart hani etz es biiitz schnulzig gfunde ich ha chli meh dreck erwartet vom neil young? southern man en antirassismus song endlich chli dreck! super! ich bi etz aber allgemein eeehner enttüscht s plätscheret echli vor sich hii. dont let it bring you down isch cool. börds seehr cute aber wieder sochli whiny. when you dance i can really love het chli de neil young blues rock time gmacht woni erwartet han. aber finds sust echt chli zu whiny. cripple creek ferry au wieder CSNY-harmonies und so finds echt sehr schön aber han insgesamt viel meh kreativs und so erwartet. biiitz enttüscht defür dass de neil young sone riese legende isch.
good, but not great
starts so good and ends good but not as good
There are some great songs on here, but I am afraid I just can’t with that voice. It takes away from the songwriting and I have to deduct one point for that. I imagine there are interpretations of these songs I would enjoy much more than Neil’s versions
FAVO: Only love can break your heart, Southern Man
A little whiny for my taste. Overall better than initially expected. The album seems to get better as it goes on.
Not sure if this is actually the case, but is sounds to me like young Neil is singing the vocal track, then overdubbing it so that he harmonizes with himself for a lot of this album. It's especially prevalent on the "When you dance I can really love" song. For me, the thing I like the least about his music is his voice. But somehow, when you double it it gets better. I wonder if that trick works anywhere else in life... Shitty cat? Get another. Bland slice of pizza? why not have two? I've tried this trick with guitar ownership and it doesn't seem to work. I keep buying guitars but my skill doesn't seem to be improving.
Couldn’t really get into it should probably give it another listen
Bueno
10/03/2025 I have no real feelings for this album.
Not bad. Couldn't really get into the tone of his voice on this one
The more Neil Young I get, the more I become a fan. This wasn't quite as good as other two albums I've had already on this list, but still a solid effort. There's a lot less rock on this album than his previous album, and more soft piano ballads. Not that that's a bad thing, he can clearly do both. I don't think Young sounds whiny at all like a lot of people says he does, he sounds great on this album. In fact, on the title track, I think he sounds rather lovely. It's easily best track on the album, and is quite hauntingly beautiful. 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' is another really nice song. A decent effort from Neil Young who seems to be consistently good but nothing phenomenal. This album was slightly "meh" in places but also had some very good highlights.
Why does bro sound like Shoresy
Neil Young's After the Gold Rush peered out at me from my parents much neglected record collection with its memorable black and white cover art with gilded lettering. Though I probably sought out the 1960s folk rock of supergroup: Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young) instead of the solo work of Daryl Hannah's other half. His voice is nasal and verging on Tiny Tim territory, like a choir boy castrato with hippie idealism. Folk songs about "mother nature" being "on the run in the 1970s" until an alien invasion signals the second coming. This is the album that contains most of the well-known Neil Young songs: "Tell Me Why," "Southern Man," "Only Love Can Break Your Heart," "Cripple Creek Ferry."
Some interesting tunes. Nice folk vibe
When I heard the first track on the album, I thought: 'My goodness, another whiny whine'. I was about to quit, but gave the album another chance. It wasn't bad. But in between, I like Neil Young's music. His voice and his music always walk the line between annoying and pleasant. I don't think there are so few albums in the world that this should be one of the 1000 best. But overall it was nice to have heard it. 3/5
Några riktigt bra låtar, men lite tråkigt i längden.
harvest through zuma was a great run, after the gold rush doesn't do much for me unfortunately
Good
I believe in you is my favorite track
Þetta hreyfði því miður ekki mikið við mér. Southern man samt flott lag.
Sorry, I just don’t vibe with you Neil
I did struggle with this one. The first time I listened at work it was uninteresting. I had to play it a second time at home with no distractions, and it was a little better. Not an album I would play often.
nice warm sound. didn't like how long some of the songs got
I can’t get used to the annoying voice
Ja vrij rustig, niet echt mijn ding merkte ik
I quite enjoyed this one, had a nice vibe to it. Nothing really stood out but overall a decent album.
For some reason I thought Neil Young was more rocky than this. Some good songs and he nails the folk sound pretty much with an obvious talent for songwriting. But….that….voice😬
It’s a nice album, but for me doesn’t hit the heights of his albums which sandwich this one (both 5* albums for sure). Just a little too laid back and country to get my pulse really racing.
I don’t hate Neil Young. I just don’t like listening to him sing. This is very good. Just really wish someone else handled vocals.
A classic album from Neil Young. Not as good as Harvest, in my opinion, and suffers from feeling too short. Some great tracks and a few less great fillers.
Same old boring folk music that this website has to offer, except this time, the singer has a squeaky voice and lyrics that he forces to be meaningful.
Good album
Better than some of the other Neil Young solo albums. Still just not a big fan of his. He had a couple of good songs on here.
I’m not a big fan of him but he did a good enough job to stay at a 3
He should have been a poet rather than a poet who sings like Mr. Hankey.
Decent enough Neil Young album, but didn't feel there were any particular stand out songs. He's done much better work IMHO.
this was nice to listen to, not really my taste but i can appreciate it
I got this one right after Rust Never Sleeps on this list, so cool to compare them in that way. I didn't think I'd like the latter more than this album, but I have to say that after a full listen of each, Rust Never Sleeps is more consistently good, whereas After the Gold Rush has some slow bits that come off a bit whiney for my liking. Perhaps that's why I've always seen Neil Young as an amazing song writer, but not necessarily as a great album maker. The high points are super high--Southern Man, After the Gold Rush. Then lots of forgettable filler.
Solid outing.
This is a solid album but doesn't really stand out in any way. I enjoyed it, but I don't think I'll really be coming back to it. Best Songs: Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Southern Man, Don't Let It Bring You Down Worst Songs: I Believe in You
