Reviews (page 7 of 11)
Lots of pretty acoustic numbers on here. Is it Neil's least rocking album? Mostly deserves its reputation, but I listen to this one the least of all his classic period. Docked a point as the reach of his voice exceeds its grasp a bit on occasion.
Quite good, I like Neil Young. Some songs a bit boring.
Good songs but Neil’s voice is grating.
Excellent album, classic Neil Young, memorable.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Only love can break your heart
Second to Harvest Moon
Lots of Neil Young on this list and it’s not all gold, but it’s been more good than bad so far. I wouldn’t say I’m a fully-fledged fan yet, but I’ve certainly become a well-wisher of his. Some very immediate, sing-song melodies on this one, with occasional injections of energy and bite. Would happily listen through again in future. I was racking my brains to remember where I’d heard Don’t Let It Bring You Down before, and I think it must be from Everything Everything’s version. Great song. It’s nice when the generator helps me link a cover I know to its source.
This album hits the spot for me. Very smooth and thoughtful country folk at its best. My only gripe is that the mixing and production could have made this album so much better. The vocals are mixed too much on top and they can feel overbearing at times. The instruments feel a little flat as well. I feel like there’s so much sonic richness hiding underneath the surface that could have been revealed to great effect. The lead guitar work is also sloppy at best, which is just what you get with Neil Young. Thankfully the songs themselves are so well crafted that one can get past the nitpicks to enjoy the album as a whole.
I liked this album a lot better than I liked the last album of Neil’s I listened to. This makes me more exciting about listening to his other albums. My 2 favorite songs were After the Goldrush and Birds.
I just discovered I like Neil Young. It would be a 3.5+ The jewell for me "Don't let it bring you down". On a second "Southern Man". Yes, atypic voice, very intimate. I will get back to this album.
Felt a little like Harvest. A bit slower. Seemed fitting for a grey fall day.
I enjoyed this. A couple of classic songs but the whole album works. I didn't know I liked Neil Young as much as I do before doing this whole thing!
Have to listen on YouTube, not avail on Spotify. I believe in you is a banger very much a Neil young album. Point of view and sound with no apologies, love it for that reason. Seems like a straight forward 70s situation. Don’t let it bring you down holds up. Listened to twice and felt the same second time around
A lot to love here, country meets rock. You either love or hate his tone and I love it. Southern Man is a great song. 4.5/5
I want to hate Neil Young so bad because is voice is objectively annoying. But, it's also oddly endearing. This album in particular was so simple and clean. The songs just felt honest somehow - even though I have no idea what's he's singing about most of the time. This one pulled me in, and I dig that.
Solide album d'americana/folk. 8/10
Really nice, folky, warm. His voice was not my favourite on some tracks especially in the beginning, but overall I really enjoyed the album.
Overall not Young's strongest album to me - much as I don't dispute its ideas, Southern Man is Young at his most holier than thou preaching, despite being a bit of a banger. A lot of the rest is weirdly subdued low energy. But it is redeemed and then some by the presence of the title track, possibly my favorite Neil Young solo song, and When You Dance... which is certainly in my top 10.
wait I like this
4/5. It's definitely a very quiet album, more singer-songwriter than anything. It's chill and there are some great lyrics and rhythms, but there is a sense of throwaway songs, like a lot of them don't feel finished or they could be better. Overall, it is a beautiful album but not perfect.
This is hard to rate; it has just a few songs that don't shine quite so bright. But the ones that do are straight up supernova. I think this will fall juuuuuuust shy of a 5.
Neil Young is an artist where I always love when I hear him but still have not taken the initiative to explore on my own. I really need to. 4/5
Great singer songwriter essential album, although there's only so much Neil Young I can handle in one sitting.
neil’s all about the vibe, sometimes his boomer worldview spoils it for me
2nd best Neil Young album
An amazing songwriter and story teller, his music is timeless. I’m not a huge fan of his voice but I can overlook that with how awesome his music is.
It's a great album but it isn't Neil's best. I like other albums from him more but this is still an excellent listen. The title track, Don't Let it Bring You Down and When You Dance I Can Really Love are stand out tracks.
favorite tracks: "southern man" and "don't let it bring you down"
I love Neil Young, although his voice whines in that nasal, grating way. Southern Man is an excellent track, although with a baffling narrative turn midway that I can't quite interpret.
Another one I'm surprised I haven't heard before. I've never delved into Neil Young outside of Buffalo Springfield and CSNY so this was a great introduction to his catalogue.
This was my favorite Neil Young album so far, enjoyed the groove
It was good.
Neil Young was an artist I vaguely knew of, but had never listened to before and therefore didn’t know what to expect. This was such a treat, I’ll definitely be checking out more.
For most of my life, I thought Young, like Dylan, was a great songwriter who should have other people sing his songs. Now I listen to this and hear the brittleness in his voice on Only Love Can Break Your Heart, and I can't imagine anyone else singing it. (I've since come around to the same thing with Dylan too). It's a raw, beautiful record.
Very good - not all the songs are the very best, but most of them are.
I think this is my third favorite Neil Young album, after Harvest and Rust Never Sleeps. As with many of his albums, After the Gold Rush sits between musical styles, with folk songs like After the Gold Rush and rough rockers like Southern Man.
8/10. Love these Neil Young albums where he actually sounds good.
I wish I liked Neil Young's voice better because I think he could have some great songs. As it stands, this was decent. 7/10
Not at all bad
Southern Man is an awesome song, great guitar stuff. Also some other great songs on here. Love the lyrics and stuff, the group vocals aren't really my thing but I don't mind it too much here.
Ému par ce dernier album, la messe est dite.
listened directly after an album i didn't like and this was a breath of fresh air, never listened to any neil young before. title track, "southern man", "when you dance i can really love", and "i believe in you" are great and the rest is pretty good too. i'd give this a 3.5/5 but i can't give half stars so i'll round it up since it's quite enjoyable and it might just grow on me
A fantastic folk rock album and as equally good an entry point to Young's fine music as Harvest.
Solid folk album. Nothing really else to add, this album kinda speaks for itself.
I really really liked it. I can't believe how little of Neil Young I knew, especially cause I can see so much of his music in Elliott Smith, one of my favourite artists ever!
High 7. His voice is kind of weird, but the songs are all very well written and arranged
Very beautiful album.
Introspective, wistful, patient at times, definitely a pretty compelling album. Though the energy turns up on Southern Man, the album is pretty intimate with Neil's unique voice telling a story. Very engaging.
Not a bad album, but also definitely not his best. I could see myself rediscovering this album later in life and loving it. Until then, it’s just pretty good.
Straight to the heart.
Oh Neil Young. Just finger yourself in front of me. Come on.
The title track and 'I Believe In You' are absolutely heart-wrenching. Beautiful album, wish I discovered it sooner.
Following the success of Deja vu, Neil Young shifts from blues rock to all sorts of folky styles. And it really works out for him. For some reason, indieheads considers the first two tracks to be his best songs. I thought "Tell Me Why" lacked anything special, while "After the Gold Rush" was a boring ballad, and after three listens, I still didn't get the appeal. The tracks after that, however, really impressed me. We got some sick fingerpicking and some catchy pop tracks. Thought it got weaker near the end, especially hated "Birds." It's a versatile short listen that's great for introducing Neil Young to people.
I dig it, makes me wish I weren’t pot-committed to Spotify as far as playlist building goes, a lot of these make for great road trip songs but Neil Young has pulled his music from that platform. I thought I’d hate it but I didn’t find his voice annoying like I thought off the first track, and the horn on After the Gold Rush sort of won me over early.
Only love can break your heart is a truly great song. I like this Neil Young a lot. Not the biggest fan of his voice, but it hits a groove after a while.
Some good songs, quintessential Young. Still doesn't quite jive with me.
One of Neil Young's great 70s albums!
I appreciate that it puts me on the wrong side of history but… Sweet Home Alabama is a much better song than Southern Man, right? There are some beautiful moments on this album but it’s also pretty whiny and nasal. Also, Spotify.
Ateh que foi legal, nao sabia que eu gostava de Neil Young
This was a pleasant folk, country and rock album. While I don't think this was really my favourite of any of those genres, it was a nice album to spend half an hour of the evening enjoying. It was also kept interesting by breaking up the country and folk tracks with some more energetic rock. Overall a good album. Favourite: When You Dance I Can Really Love
Southern change gonna come at last. Best track: Southern Man
8/10 folk / country / rock. solide album. dommage pas sur spotify
excellent album with neil young’s signature voice and folk/rock stylings. rock solid. highlights: “southern man”, “oh, lonesome me”, “birds”.
Now this was a good Neil Young record. Bunch of early 70’s southern folky rock.
Very mellow, almost Dylan with a different voice.
Second Neil Young in a row, and it was perfect to demonstrate my comment yesterday about his versatility. Yesterday an album that was meh in the best case, and today one that is classic and almost perfect.
Niet geluisterd, maar ken dit album zeer goed. Ik hou ervan.
A great album overall. You can feel Young growing as a songwriter, with songs such as Southern Man being particular standouts. That said, I don't think it can compete with his next album, Harvest, which stands as an outright masterpiece.
Grew on me toward the end
Solid neil
The day I’m flying home from a trip to America and Canada I get an American-Canadian artist that’s pretty neat ! As for the music... the music … so he has a really terrible voice…but I honestly kind of admire that about him ??? Like he’s still made a banger album despite that ???? I loved a lot of the songs - Southern Man is obviously great - I can’t give it more than three stars because I really do not like his voice - but I am excited to hear more from him ??? None of this really makes sense but yeah. Lots to unpack here.
a lotta love songs on this one, I liked it butttt def not his best work
Clásico Neil Young. Muy lindo.
Ok
There's an explosive energy to Neil Young live, where his amp is on the verge of bursting into flames and he himself is not far off either. Every time with his records I expect to find that, and tantalisingly, it peeks out of numerous songs; but the laid back folk wins out most times, and leaves me wanting more.
Mmmmm, ¿y esa voz?
some of track just like instrument and honestly I don't really like songs that are too long .. so I give 3/10 for this album my favorite track is cinnamon girl
Old school 60s 70s mallow makes great background music
Simple songs with some emotional connection depending on who I am that day. Solid listen Notable Tracks Southern Man Oh, lonesome me Birds
Cant listen to more than 20 minutes of this without falling asleep.
3.5/5
This album starts and you immediately think "Yep, that's Niel Young!" Probably my favorite Niel Young so far
sure buddy
Not my favourite. His voice reminds me of Susan Sarandon’s in rocky horror, not a bad thing but just not MY thing. I liked the progression of quality it got way better in the middle, but died down again.
Neil Young is not a artist I've ever heard of before but I can tell I'll like him just from the first track "Tell me why" I do like how he's longing but still very mean about it not idealistic love or anything but love nonetheless, surprisingly crisp audio quality for 1970, cords sound similar to a Tyler childers song I've heard before, hopefully I like the rest of his work this much, this is a man begging...he doesn't know what for but he's begging I really enjoy it,folky guitar in nearly all the songs I love it, the voice is quite different from what I'm used to but it's growing on me by each listen, it feels like there's a disconnect when it jumps to heavier instrumentals but overall solid.
7/10
I really want to love Neil Young. He’s done amazing work throughout his career, much of which I adore, but this album just felt sort of bland. No stellar highs, no creative risks, just Neil playing to his strengths.
Fint album men ikke noget jeg ville lytte til personligt
Did not notice the "save" button so my notes have disappeared, but I guess that's okay because now I can summarize what I thought. It feels rough, which I think adds a kind of "intimate" feeling to the album. The melody of the pre-chorus of Only Love Can Break Your Heart is very nice (After looking the lyrics up, I realize it is the second half of the verses). The intro of Don't Let It Bring You Down feels very Kate Bush. Was he Christian? Does "good book" in Southern Man mean the Bible? I've noticed he layers lots of vocals and rough harmonizing. Also, I noticed he uses lots of rhetorical questions in his writing. The ending felt a bit abrupt and incomplete, however. I think my favorite song is Only Love Can Break Your Heart.
Really liked Only Love Can Break Your Heart and Southern Man. Much of the rest are kind of misses but I’ll search the Neil Young library for more at some point.
Niet super memorabel
Pretty good listening.
I liked it
Overall I would say I've enjoyed the various Neil Young projects that we've heard so far, but I eventually get lost in them. Not in a good way, but in a lost in the sauce sort of way.
One of the songwriting greats- unfortunately I think his work often works better in the hands of others. Beautiful songs, ok album.
Bastante bueno, pero noa gran cosa
alright
I liked
I'd really like to like Neil Young more than I do. He's got some great songs but overall I just can't get into it. After The Gold Rush and Only Love Can Break Your Heart had me wondering how much time each song had left, especially After The Gold Rush...jeez, that singing was painful to listen to. I respect him and that's why I'm giving this a 3 but it was an overall slog to listen to.
O álbum até é bom, mas por alguma razão não me está a cair bem. Acho que precisava de estar num mood específico para conseguir apreciá-lo melhor.
I think i would've liked this if anyone besides Neil Young sang the songs.
At first I thought it wouldn't be of my taste, but after the first few songs it was banger after banger
really liked “southern man” didnt actually liked the others though
Always thought this was after Harvest! Another solid effort from Neil, he rarely disappoints!
not my favourite of his
He is fine...nothing was super amazing and not one of my favorites of his. It was just more Neil Young and I have had enough
it’s either gorgeous or i cannot stand his voice and there’s no in between. i really want to like neil young, i love people influenced by him. i just don’t get it it’s genuinely really frustrating
fave: Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Better(?) young at best 3.5 rounded down
This one I feel a bit more tired by than the others. There are some gorgeous songs there, but in terms of variety and complexity I'm left hanging a bit. Sure some are phenomenal, sure all of them are very listenable, but they are also not moving music as a whole forward, and to me lack ambition.
It has daydream effect. My mind kept wandering off to bittersweet imaginations. Idealizations. Listening to it now means wishing on further scenarios. Listening to it in 30 years will mean looking back. Cherishing, regretting, crying. To be honest I expected more from it. Chci harmoniku.
buen country
i actually liked 4 songs i love the chill vibes ts album gives
Ehdottomasti parempi kuin aiemmin listalla kuultu Crazy horse -albumi. Musa huvin tehtyä, tietyssä mielentilassa jopa varmasti levylautaselle valittavaa tavaraa mutta tuo Youngin ääni… joko albumi on vaan vähän raskasta kuunnella. 3/5
Less bangers than the usual Neil
I think I’d like this if he had a deeper voice.
Enjoyed enough to give it a slight positive rating. Vocals sound kindy whiny.
is okay... again maybe not my thang, but crazy i didn't know the original for only love can break your heart was from here. otherwise it wasn't especially notable for me, no songs really popped out to me except for maybe when i thought he said cripple creek furries i had to do a double take 2.5/5
Overall solid album, there are definitely a few skippable songs toward the end of the record though. Best songs are the title track and southern man.
Nice southern Americana album, easy listening, enjoyed all the solos
Solid and sweet, but without some of the strength and weight of Neil Young at his peak
Most listenable out of neil young’s albums i’ve received so far. Fav tracks: “Tell me why” and “Birds”. Almost a 4.
Another good Neil Young album with lots of great songs, but I just never reach for it.
This was fine overall. There were some choices with how Neil sounds when he sings that I did not enjoy, especially on "Southern Man". Further proof this limit would benefit from limiting itself to only 2 albums per artist.
Solid.
One of the most well known albums ever. I like Neil young well enough. His guitar playing is exceptional, I like the folksy air to his music, and he has some really profound lines. Pretty good.
Beautiful melodies and poetic lyrics. However, the falsettos didn't work for me at all. which impacted the enjoyment quite a lot. Overall, quite a few solid songs but not a lot of standouts. "Blind man running through the light of the night With an answer in his hand Come on down to the river of sight And you can really understand"
Totally different and unfortunately not as good as the previous Neil album. Still enjoyable though
There is not much bad about the tracks, but personally, I was lacking gravity and range of emotions. If you need half an hour of soft rock in front of the chimney (Kuschelrock™), this is as good as it gets, but my fire wasn't burning for this.
Listenable, well crafted folk music and piano ballads. For my taste there's happening too little in most of the tracks, which makes it a pleasant background listen, but lacking immersion. "Southern Man" was an exception to this and pretty cool. 3/5 - solid
it's very sweet and the lyrics are cute, but I don't always like his voice
Me gustó, 3,5 o un poco mas
Not me
Some great some dull, I never really enjoyed Neil Youngs voice as much as I should’ve
Really cozy
If you wanted the most Neil Young of Neil Young albums, this is probably the one you should get.
Probably my favorite Neil Young album, although that's not saying much. I was never as big a fan of the man as a lot of people seem to be, but there are good songs here. Young's baby-man voice may not be for everyone, but I can look (or rather, hear) past it. Key tracks: Tell My Why Only Love Can Break Your Heart Oh, Lonesome Me Birds
I have this record.
An album that can be moving, annoying, puzzling and on the border of sappy. With the latter, Young’s phrasing and voice save songs like “Till the Morning Comes”, and “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” from schmaltz. Slightly different arrangements or Graham Nash singing would make the songs pablum. That same voice can grate at times. The high pitch vocals do not always land in a pleasing manner. I have grown accustomed to his voice, but close listening this time made me wonder how many people he might turn off. However, Young’s vocals stand out in the best way on “I Believe in You”, “Oh, Lonesome Me” and the enigmatic title track. He stands atop the Laurel Canyon crew in his ability to impart soul to his songs, which can lift basic lyrics to wonderful levels of pain and tenderness. Musically the album relies a great deal on the piano, which is surprising considering Young’s status as a singular guitarist. The piano helps make “After the Gold Rush” and “When You Dance I Can Really Love.” It sinks “Till the Morning Comes” and “Cripple Creek Ferry.” Neil adds to the mix with songs featuring Crazy Horse in all of their distorted glory. The aforementioned “When You Dance I Can Really Love” greatly benefits from the band's approach as its electric stomping covers up fairly pedestrian lyrics. We get a dose of Neil’s didacticism with “Southern Man.” Young often has songs like this one with emphatic moral lessons for his audience. I cannot disagree with his position, however it can lean towards hectoring. The theme seems completely out of step with the rest of the album’s focus. Perhaps it was included because it featured some of Neil’s patented guitar work. After the Gold Rush has three highs, 4-5 solids and two-three medicocres, which keeps it from classic status.
Neutral. It seems an album that would be hard to have a strong opinion about either way. I liked it and found it an easy listen with the perfect runtime but I wasn't jamming along with it. If any of these songs came on again I would happily listen, but I find it unlikely to go out of my way to play any of them. I did have favorites: "Southern Man" "Till the Morning Comes" and "When You Dance I Can Really Love"
I thought the album was ok, nothing stood out, but wasn't bad. It was alright/meh overall.
Aunque conocia de Neil Young como artista este es el primer album que escucho de él. Aprecié mucho su musicalidad aun dentro de un genero que no escucho mucho como el folk americano. Y aun asi este album tiene bastante variedad y disfrute de Southern Man y When You Dance I Can Really Love 3/5
Rate: 7.5/10
Je suis pas fan, mais ça s'écoute bien il faut être honnête. +1 parce que Neil Young est un chic type qui a des principes, et -1 parce que c'est probablement la pire pochette de l'histoire de la musique. Playlist pick : Don't Let It Bring You Down
Fine? I really expected to like this more. Southern Man goes insane, though. I liked the opening two tracks as well. I find his voice more grating here than I do on Deja Vu, and his band is nowhere near as good as CSN, which goes without saying. 3.5
Didn't love it but like it better than the first.
Not really a fan of the his voice, but I'm a fan of the lyrics, so I guess it balances out. 'Southern Man' was definitely a stand out song.
My inner boomer swoke for this, I'm scared. I like this more than I'm willing to admit, I really can't say I'm a Neil Young fan but this surprised me at points. This album opens really strong, the first few tracks really caught me off guard. I was shocked that I actually liked Neil Young music. The first 3 tracks in particular are really good. I'm not gonna lie, his voice is still extremely noticeable tho. But I can tolerate that of the music is good, and he pulls that off for over half the album. It kinda falls off after 'Lonesome Me' and I start to realize why I don't like Young. But I'll give you this Young, this made me understand why boomers like you. But seriously, have a listen at 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart'. Fav Track:Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Another good album by Mr. Young. Southern Man is the shining star but the other tunes fall easily into solid classic rock.
Movie score ahh 3/5
Some unique sound in here.
2.5 zzzz
love love love neil young. but had never heard anything in this album, thoroughly enjoyed it
good album, not listened to it all the way through for a long time - got into NY around 25 years ago, what’s with the silent track, didn’t know that was on here, till today😂
great album. maybe not my style but it’s objectively so good
Not my favorite. Some songs were good
I like Neil Young. This one was one of the cruisy albums and that’s nice on a Monday morn
Næs plata, get ekki alveg farið í 4 stjörnur en það gæti gerst við aðra hlustun.
This was mostly fairly soft folk and rock numbers, pleasant enough but not exciting. Southern Man by far the best track.
Easy listening. Thanks, Neil. 3.75 rounded down to 3.
Ça va mais sans plus
I thought i would i hate it but i really enjoyed it but some songs were a little to country for me. Great album though🌙
Mir jo keq 7.6/10
The second song on this album, which I'm assuming the album was also named after, has this instrumental bit that feels very nostalgic, which is insane because even my parents weren't born in 1970. Why am I getting nostalgic listening to a song from half a century ago?
I like the ones where other people are singing too
el sonido es muy similar en todas las canciones y eso es algo que después de un rato me aburre un toque. good songwriting though, guardé 1 canción
A swell listen but something about his voice lol
This is another Neil Young album. Might have liked it a bit more than the others. 3.4.
It's less meandering than other of his works.
I appreciate Neil Young's music, but I don't love it. There's just something about it that makes me feel like he's keeping me at arm's length from truly giving myself over to it. As it is, this is another Neil Young album that's good, not great.
This album reminds me why I don't like getting back to the latest Geese album, which I think is really good, like this one - I just can't get myself into this type of voice/singing. Unfortunately, it's really tiring for me. 6/10 Will I add this album to my library? NO
nice little album, never got Neil Old
Not a fan of his voice, but he had some pretty solid songs, like southern man and when you dance I can really love, which I really liked.
возможно музыкально я могла бы этим проникнуться но голос его очень отвлекает и отбивает энтузиазм
Fairly simple musically, nothing stands out. I'd say ... fine ... not great, not bad, just fine. Did recognize the 'old man sitting by the side of the road' song.
After not even 80 albums into the challenge, 3 of them have been Neil Young's and I still don't know what to think of his music. Most of the time, I don't like his voice; it's too whiny. But, sometimes I think it works well with his music. All of te songs are well written, produced etc., I just don't vibe with most of it. Southern Man was my fav song and first listen
- - (quote discovered and taken from someone else's review:) "You go to a supermarket, and you see a faggot behind the fuckin’ cash register; you don’t want him to handle your potatoes.” - Neil Young. Yeah, you can F off Neil Young. - There are some good tracks on here, especially the opener and Only Love (though, I prefer the St. Etienne version). - I think my favourite part of the album is the piano accompaniment, which is prominent (the guitar tone definitely can't compete). - His voice can get really whiny and out of tune. - The sad boy lyrics become a bit much after a while, though they are mainly poetic and thoughtful. I like the commentary on the world more than the emphasis on breakups/love. - Like the last Neil Young album I rated (Harvest), I find that the songs don't evolve that much, but I like this album more than I liked Harvest.
Muy bueno. Buenas vibes y guitarra.
i mean it was okay.
3/5 no sé si lo volvería a escuchar, pero no me disgustó. Canción agregada a la playlist " When You Dance You Can Really Love"
I enjoy Neil Young more than Crosby or Stills. Few good songs on this album.
Not a fan of Neil Young's voice, which is a shame because I think I'd like some of these songs if they were sung by someone else.
Me dejó un poco fría, esperaba algo más.
I just can't get past his nasal voice. If he took the peg off his nose I'd probably like it more.
The first of a billionty Young albums. I generally don’t love falsetto singers, but I kinda dig Young’s voice. This was good, but I wasn’t enamored by it and wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to it again. 3/5
Ugh. Everyone a NY album comes up I go "Sweet. Two songs I like, three songs I'm told I should like, and three sing that should've been on a CSNY album."
got bored, i get it
Was ok
I love folk. very earthy and pretty
Young has a weirdly whiny and nasally voice on this album. Not bad.
It’s fine. I don’t love his voice, but he writes decent songs.
Not my favorite Neil, but always love Neil.
it was fine
me parece un álbum muy versátil, con un sonido muy original y a la vez precursor
This album was good to listen too, however I do not remember much about it, but its good enough to get a 3 star rating. I would like to listen again.
The whole thing was fine. I thought it was fairly repetitive.
I think Lynrnd Skynrd was justified in being incensed about "Southern Man." As a younger man from Michigan, I subscribed to similar broad stereotyping of white southerners as Bible-thumping racists. No doubt plenty of people like this exist (look who we elected, twice!), but corny as it is to say #notallwhitepeople, not all white people are like that. Having since met many like-minded folks from the South, I've come to dislike it when people paint with such a broad brush, instead of recognizing and embracing 1) the millions of good, progressive people down South who 2) have a unique culture that can be appreciated separate from its evil historical baggage. This is sort of an aside, but I feel like saying it, because as a *song* "Southern Man" rules. It's creepy, haunting, the riffs are great, the solo is great, and Neil's tremulous vocals fit it perfectly. That out of the way, like so much Young, it's good and I think he, the man, is great, but I'm pretty bored by a lot of the straight folky stuff. Title track is great, "Southern Man" is incredible, the rest is so-so.
I always find Young a little boring, not in an entirely bad way, in a lulling me off to naps way. As expected, this lulled me into naps so most of it passed me by in a haze. I think it might be that way by design.
I have never understood all the hype for Neil young. Just doesn’t do anything for me.
Surprisingly palatable but not really for me
Pretty solid. I don't think it's his best.
Normally I can't stand Neil Young but this was alright
Very nice. Some interesting tunes, but lacked that little extra.
Not my cup of tea.
Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? Unfamiliar How do I feel about this artist? I like Neil Young Favorite song(s)? Southern Man, Birds Overall Thoughts: Parts were boring, other parts grabbed me more. The album as a whole did not have much of an effect on me but it was pretty. Neil‘s specific vocal style works better on some songs than others.
More recognizable and better than the other Neil Young album on this list so far. I still don’t care for his voice.
This was fine. Sounded like Neil Young :)
70s folk rock. Lovely but very mid.
Clean af
Esse site quer muito que eu vire fã do Neil Young. Fica difícil avaliar por conta da saturação forçada.
Not a humongous Neil Young fan, but this was a solid selection of songs.
made southerners seethe.
A pretty good and relatively consistent release from Neil. I do feel like Side A is much stronger than B, however it is nice enough while it's on. 3/5
Pretty boring white boy soft rock. Mediocre at best. Southern man is a good song though.
Melodic and poetic, but this Neil Young just isn't doing it for me.
whichever song he sings in falsetto lowk flop, his natural voice is really good and most of the songs where he sings 'normally' are the ones i fw a low 3, but a 3 nonetheless
Et lidt svingende NY album. Til tider meget country feel
On the one hand, you have Neil's excellent songwriting and ear for a melody. On the other, you have his annoying whiny voice and extreme over-representation on this list.
pretty good.
Gonna be that guy: I thought this was just okay! I believed I was pretty familiar with Neil Young but apparently I didn't realize how high pitched his voice was, and to be honest I just never really got that into it. There's some good song-writing and lyricism but nothing that particularly wowed me.
A few hitters in here but kinda schmeep overall
i need to listen to this again, and maybe again after that. nice. some wonderful bits.
Half these songs are Can-con classics, the rest I didn’t know and seem kinda meh. Would I feel the same about the whole album if it didn’t give me classic rock radio nostalgia?
I love Neil Young but this isn't his best work.
Country, ok
Not my favorite Neil Young, but solid. I like him rocking out a bit more.
meh
Some singers' voices just don't jibe with my brain, but I like all the other parts.
It was fine, I alway feel that Neil Young's music is better when played by someone else.
quien lo lastimó tanto top 3 discos mas desoladores, con razón a lana le gusta
nice. wouldn't have looked it up and gave it a listen on my own, but nice. folksy, chill
Está bien. Alguna me llamó más la atención, pero tampoco mucho
This is my third Neil Young album and I was quite dreading this after the live album I last reviewed, but this wasn't a bad listen. You can tell his strength is in his storytelling and with the rich instrumtation in this album, the album can be quite plesant despite Neil's inability to proper sing. Definitely a good strong album, bit do ee really need 3 Neil Young albums in this list? 3/5
great album but not my type of album ⭐️⭐️⭐️
His album Harvest is a 5… after the gold rush…a 2.5. He has a unique voice that, for me, only works on certain songs. This album has some… but just some.
I feel like if I grew up with this album I would like it a lot more. It seems like something that ages well but I’m just not there yet
Rv
With so many NY albums to choose from, some are always going to hit better than others - personally I would go a year either side for a better collection I dont object to this one being here, but surely Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere or Harvest are more deserving of a spot on this list
Folk Rock, 1970 -> 3
It's fine when he doesn't try to sing higher than he can. Otherwise nice tunes, although lyrics are rather simple.
3.5
It was alright
A Southern Man don't need him around anyhow. Well, I guess now I've heard the song Skynyrd was talking about from Young. There are a few good Niel Young songs that I like. None on those are on this one. But I did kinda like, "Don't Let it Bring You Down". A nice message with moderately nice beat.
Neil Young is fine. He doesn't irritate me like one might expect. This album was an alright listen.
Overall it was a pretty solid album. However, it didn’t really grab me but I might listen to it again. Favorite tracks: only love can break your heart, birds and southern man. It’s a solid 3.5/5.
I have a weak spot for folk songs so liking this wasn't really hard for me. The one thing that was putting me off was his voice, not really sure why. I still enjoyed some of them a lot, like "southern man". My mum is a die-hard Weller fan so finding the original of one of his covers felt like home, in a way.
I listened to this on the train home and without taking notes since my phone was close to dying, but found this album decent if not super noteworthy. This is the first of Neil Young's albums that I've listened to, and I hope it's not his best because I don't see why he has albums on the list otherwise. While I didn't find the majority of the album very interesting, there were three songs that stood out to me: • Southern Man: The song that sounds most complete to me, with interesting, layered instrumentation and compelling lyrics. • Till the Morning Comes: Pretty different to the rest of the album, and a nice chilled out song • When You Dance You Can Really Love: This song's riff reminds me of Cinnamon Girl, which was the only Neil Young song I previously knew Favourite song: Southern Man
Some of these songs really slapped and others were like. He actually sounds like that???
I'm not really a Neil Young guy, its just not my kinda thing. To each their own, I suppose!
Just ok, couple iconic songs though. Lotta Neil Young on this list.
Half of this album is greatest hits. The other half is meh.
I didn't love it, but I liked it. It was pretty different from what I'm lately stuck listening, so that was good. I should probably listen to Harvest next, since I love the song Old man
Familiar and reliable the whole way through:)
This was a super enjoyable album. Neil Young is really starting to grow on me at this point. He isn't the best vocalist, but I do enjoy his songwriting and style. The songs are very interesting to listen to. The guitar parts are VERY good. This is a solid 3.5 Liked Songs: "Tell Me Why" , "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" , "Southern Man" , "Oh, Lonesome Me" , "Birds" , "When You Dance I Can Really Love"
Very mediocre album. Nothing really stood out but nothing was bad either. Just soundes like a typical Neil Young album
These songs are well written, poignant. And the performance is pretty tight. I can't get into Neil's singing; he of course already has a pretty *unique* voice, but it also seems like he has a predisposition to sing outside of his best range a little too often. The instrumental is quite good most of the time - it has a fun bluesy rock vibe. The guitar tone is so good. Some of the tracks drag just a bit, but not very many of them. 3.2/5
It's pretty boring musically for the most part, but it's lyrically compelling and a nice change of pace.
Old but gold
Simple foot tapping folk music. I found his distinctive voice a bit whiny at times. Lyrics may well be personal but a bit self indulgent.
groovy, I enjoyed
A solid album with some amazing moments, but one that didn’t really grab me overall. Favourite tracks: Tell Me Why, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Don’t Let It Bring You Down, Birds, Cripple Creek Ferry
reminds me of gilmore girls
Love the guitar, but I know I like Neil's later music more.
Tell me why - 8/10 - Fave After the gold rush - 7/10 - fave lyrics Only love can break your heart - 7/10 - Southern man - 8/10 - most instrumental Till the morning comes - 5/10 - interlude Oh, lonesome me - 4/10 - very slow Don’t let it bring you down - 7/10 - very repetitive Birds - 6/10 When you dance I can really love - 7/10 - more upbeat rock vibe I believe in you - 6/10 Cripple creek ferry - 5/10 Overall: Very slow and romance - hearbreak based, it was very enjoyable but also very long and dragged on at times.
the guy's voice is really special, I had never heard anything like that, very intimate. Its lyrics are very poetic and the musical accompaniment is simple, but it works.
"Tell Me Why" some artists need so many albums on this list. Oh, right... because Robert Dimery couldn't write a GOOD book called "250 Albums You ACTUALLY Must Hear Before You Die". He had to sell a terribly bloated book called "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die". Got it. This was OK, I guess. I just wish it had merely been written by Neil Young and performed by other artists who could sing well. Speaking of, 'Don't Let It Bring You Down' is yet ANOTHER song from this 1001 challenge that appears on Annie Lennox's 'Medusa'. She definitely picked some real bangers for that album - and performed them better than the original artists! Now THAT'S an album you need to hear before you die! 3 Stars for Neil; 5 Stars for Annie.
After listening to this album I can now see how there is a niche for Neil Young. It’s not my niche. Never will be. I’m willing to go as high as 3 stars, but can respect all scores for this one. Look at my growth. I can be understanding of other’s taste levels pertaining to Neil Young.
This was pleasant and listenable. I like the more folky/bluegrass forms of country. I could re-listen
I like the idea of the album - just wasn't a fan of his voice or the instruments on this one. I've heard better Neil than this album. Not bad but not one I'll put on rotation.
Some nice songs, but not really my style and did not really catch my attention
Harmonica, sweet soft drawl tone of singing voice, as expected from Neil young only from knowing harvest moon. Kind of album to save for a soft slow gloomy rainy day so far.
se deja escuchar, si fuera más largo sería peor pero siendo media horita ni tan mal
Brian said it was whiney and to change it
mu bueno
“After the goldrush had great potential. It’s really too bad about Mr young’s voice.”
Neil Young is probably one of these artists who developed and changed quite a lot as his career developed. This early album is fine but not very memorable. Tried not to judge through the prism of later work that is really not for me.
I tend to find these kinds of songs musically uninteresting, and while Neil’s lyrics are strong, his vocal delivery felt whiny and timid, like he’s singing just outside his range. Some great tracks though. It’s not really my thing, but I totally understand the appeal.
Un peu ringard de temps en temps en mode série sur un ranch dans le Mississipi (bird notamment) mais c’est assez sympa à écouter en général, ça casse pas 3 pattes a un canard quoi.
A technically great album and love the style of Neil Young’s music, but this album confirmed to me that I find his voice too annoying to listen to a lot of the time. This album also leaned more towards rock than the stuff of his that I prefer. There are other Neil Young records I’d put on this list before this one.
The instrumentals throughout are all great, but I struggled with his voice. It's almost cartoonish; a nasal American whine that cuts right through you. The second half of "Tell me Why" and all of "Southern Man" were incredible, which is interesting, because Young has backing singers at these points. That being said, "Don't let it bring you down" was good, the vocals were more tame against the moody guitar. Same can be said for "Birds", when Neil doesn't sing for volume, that whine doesn't rear it's head so much. I understand there are 8 more albums to come on this list. It will be interesting to see how Young may grow on me subtlety , or turn my currently cautious optimism to pure acid.
Classic. Calm. If you like Nirvana you should be able to appreciate Neil.
Nice, but nothing more than that
-like only love can break your heart giving will to mike vibes -again overall it’s not bad and if it was on in the background i wouldn’t mind it but this sound is just so boring to me and there are never really any standouts idk
Exactly what you'd expect
This is quite the polarizing album for me. A couple of hits that I find god awful, and some random songs that hugely impressed me (definitely can see how a couple of these lesser known songs have influenced bands in the punk and early alternative scenes).
7/10 cool album and a couple songs i liked
There were tracks i enjoyed, but the falseto/strained vocal stylings got me offside that i wouldn't come back for more
2 great tracks but overall the album is a bit weak
Good start to the morning. There is something in Neil Young that is soothing. Not my favourite Neil Young album though, Harvest takes it.
Still an annoying singer but I can appreciate the love he puts into it
I feel like a little bohemian hippie driving through fields of yellow very far upstate. I was deep in work when listening to this so there are most likely many strong lyrical themes that I missed but when I was tuned in I caught some beautiful lines, especially in Birds. 6.5/10 Honorable mention songs: Birds, After the Gold Rush, Southern Man
This is a good album but not to my taste. Don’t add this to any lists.
Favourite song- Oh, Lonesome me
Already listened to it. Didn’t really pull up any trees for me 6/10
tell me why - like the harmonies + first impressions are very high, good guitar after the gold rush - voice is a little old lady ish/whiny? I dont like this only love can break your heart - like harmonies and the cymbal(?) Southern man - pretty different from the first 3, like a lot, instrumental part goes on too long till the morning comes - like the trumpet(?) so short oh, lonesome me - like the harmonica and its reminiscent of a sad Christmas song and mazzy star it brings you down - reminds me of old man, I like how he sings "its only castles burning" birds - piano makes it feel churchy, thought there would be drums or guitar, second least fav when you dance you can really love - long title, I like the lots of guitar + intensity I believe in you - I liked it, im running out of things to say cripple creek ferry - I like the imagery
Sounds like a wailing cat except in *Birds". I prefer when he's trying to be sad instead of edgy. "Southern Man" is gratuitously long but what the fuck "Till the Morning Comes". Fine, but life isn"t improved upon discovery 3/5
