Okok
Country Folk und Rock, nichts was mich richtig begeistert aber kann man mal hören. 3/5
Going into this not being familiar with most of Young's work, I found this to be decent. I like the musical styling and the lyrics, but i would say that Young's voice is like Bob Dylan in that it has to be your cup of tea to really enjoy. For me, Neil Young is a great songwriter, but his voice is an acquired taste that i have not acquired at this time.
Neil Young baaaaby
Not his best work but there’s some good stuff here
Weak 3
Two of my fav Neil tracks are on here, the title track and “Don’t let it bring you down”. Along with the other obvious hits it is a strong album, but not enough to round up for me. 3.5/5
Another day. Another Neil album. While definitely better than “Tonight’s The Night”, the number of his albums being included in this list is bordering on silly.
Turns out I’m prob not that much of a Neil Young fan. Southern Man is nice but the rest didn’t really tickle my weiner. 2.75
3/5
Annoying voice on the guy
Confirmed. Neil Young is mostly inoffensive, but not great.
I didn’t know Neil young couldn’t sing
probably wouldnt listen regularly or again but it was a great album
*sigh* Album number 2, and we've already got a folk/country type album. My greatest enemies... I'm sure this is a great project, seems to viewed as a classic masterpiece, but I don't get anything from it. Annoying voice, dull instrumentals. I can't genuinely criticise it because I'm sure it's great, it's just not for me at all.
Good album. I guess I don't really know why Neil Young is so well-known. His music is fine, but I just don't see how this is a person whose name I have known pretty much my whole life.
Another Neil Young album which is nice to listen to but sounds like all of the others. This one however has Southern Man which I forgot how much of a jam that song is, definitely my favorite by him
Just fine; easy listening. Not my favorite from Young, but also not my least favorite.
Still not a fan of his voice but this is one of the lesser annoying Neil Young albums
A little bit of a hit or miss of an album, but some really gorgeous songwriting on here and some really compelling compositions. Only Love Can Break Your Heart and Oh, Lonesome Me are the standouts here. Such an incredible job from Neil at portraying solitude and the confinement of forgotten love.
Some classics on this album especially the start and some fillers towards the end. Really good album and although most give it five it’s only three for me as the last tracks are just a bit flat.
first folk genre album, and i quite enjoyed it. i enjoyed the melodies on Southern Man, but other than that, i felt like it was pretty stale. a good listen nonethless
Not sure what I can say about this album. It feels heartfelt and mostly genuine. The music is simple but enjoyable. It's Neil Young.
Southern Man, Don't Let It Bring You Down, I Believe in You
This was perfectly pleasant and classic Neil Young! Sometimes it's not always my thing, but I enjoyed this more than other albums. Good stuff
Not my style but special mention to souther man that was pretty good
It was alright, nothing special.
Ok, album. Seems like he is a lost soul. I like more upbeat music
neil young
Not bad, quite easy listening. I wouldn’t skip any of these songs, but I won’t be adding any to my playlist either.
Neil es lo más grande que hay. Es tremenda la cantidad de temazos de disco a disco. Este es más 'canción', bien folk. Tiene picos altísimos pero también relleno.
nice
Solid Neil album. Andrew of his biggest hits. 3.75
It's fine, I guess? Maybe it just caught me wrong, but I remember liking other Neil Young albums better. It was good to hear the song that Lynyrd Skynyrd we're complaining about in Sweet Home Alabama though.
This was ok, but it’s not Harvest
Some songs are what i like
I feel like you had to be there to get this music. It's not great but not bad. A little boring and inoffensive. The most 3/5 possible
I enjoyed most of this album even tho I'm not a huge Young fan. Good music for a road trip
Pretty solid. First half is better than the second half. Some classic folk rock on this record.
pleasant
I like the music, but I'm not a fan of Neil's voice. I thought it would grow on me, but that was not the case.
Bättre än jag förväntat mig. En oväntad 3.5/5.
When Neil Young doesn't use his "She Don't Use Jelly" falsetto he's a lot more enjoyable to listen to
Pretty good
This album was generated on my dad's birthday, and he was the one who told me about Neil Young. Not a bad album by any means, but I expected better from an artist who is revelled as much as he is. Favorite Song: "Southern Man"
It's fine
Fav: Southern Man Least Fav: Cripple Creek Ferry It’s competently made with a couple stand-out songs, but much of this did nothing for me
Like the songwriting better than the singing.
I've previously reviewed a few Neil Young solo albums, and a few with Crazy Horse and Buffalo Springfield. I don't know if I should be surprised but I've rated one album a 1 and 1 album a 5 - and a couple in between. This one was on the 'better'side. First of all, his vocals are fucking awful - he sounds like my 90 years Grandma just before she croaked. Musically it was quite nice, easy to listen to . I wouldn't seek it out again though, but wouldn't turn it off it came on by chance. That to me is 3 star material!
Folk rock. I would’ve liked this a lot more but I really didn’t like his voice.
That went better then expected, altough I find it a bit boring🤷♂️
5 songs is enough to me from Young. Whole album is just too much of whining... But those 5 songs are good.
det är rätt så bra. ett sömnpiller emellanåt men vissa låtar är bra. kan inte säga någon specifik. har lite svårt för rösten hans. men men ja jo. visst.
It's okay, but just a bit unremarkable. Southern Man and Birds the standout tracks.
Do I respect this artist? Yes. Do I enjoy any of the songs? Next question.
Talented musician, but just can’t get behind the pitch of the vocals
He knows how to make good country that's for sure
its ok, more of a 2.5
It was mediocre. I was sadly not highly impressed. Doubtful I'll listen to it again. Had higher hopes since I really love the 60s and 70s.
Not being a NY fan, I actually liked this album. Maybe it was just down hill for Neil after 1970. When You Dance and Southern Man were key tracks for me, I think partially because I had heard them applied in context for most of my life. But even the soulful After the Gold Rush was beautifully written and performed. I don’t know if this is ready to be committed to vinyl yet, but it is worth a least one more listen, and maybe more.
Nothing wrong with this album, and in fact it is probably better than some of the other eil Young albums we've listened to. But, this moves into Dylan territory where the question arises: What is the value of having so many albums by one artist?
Twas fine.
goes down like water, but there's not much that stays from this album
mid
Θα ελεγα higher highs απο harvest αλλα lower lows. Πιο στεναχωρο αλμπουμ με καλες στιγμες αλλα προτιμω το Harvest. B
Adorable
Beautiful songs, just wish someone else was doing the singing, especially on the title track. The Linda Ronstadt version for example sounds so much better in my opinion. Really liked Birds, which I haven't heard before.
Found his voice a bit grating when hitting the high notes initially. Some really good songs but nothing too exciting and tails off a bit. 3.5/5 if it were possible
Iconic voice, good album
I don't get it (voice is really bad on this one)
1 star for each Neil Young album i have to listen to in the future
I think this might be my last Neil Young album from the list and I’m not upset about it. I do like “Don’t Let it Bring You Down” so that was a nice surprise.
Yet another from Neil, and so soon after Harvest. Not as good, but it's alright. That means it's really not necessary to have on this list. Favorite tracks: Oh Lonesome Me, Don't Let It Bring You Down, Cripple Creek Ferry. Album art: Shot of (I assume) Neil walking the street. Looks like he's wearing a creepy mask, is that the original or just this animated Apple Music edit thing? 3/5
01) Tell Me Why - 8,0 02) After the Gold Rush - 7,0 03) Only Love Can Break Your Heart - 8,0 04) Southern Man - 7,5 05) Till the Morning Comes - 7,0 06) Oh Lonesome Me - 7,5 07) Don't Let It Bring You Down - 7,5 08) Birds - 7,5 09) When You Dance I Can Really Love - 7,5 10) I Believe in You - 7,0 11) Cripple Creek Ferry - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,41 (74/100)
Already listened to this one for another list. I like it but not my favorite Neil. I prefer a few years down the line from this. 3/5
Strong start to the album and then it really falls off the last half. It really struck me how bizarre his voice is at certain moments in the album.
I've always been some what lukewarm on Neil Young. When he goes fully electric and is clearly very invested in what he's making, he's excellent. But in many of his quieter moments on this record I just find his tone of voice distracting, and his writing a bit half baked.
geil gsi zumd wösch abneh han sogar eis id likes tue stabil
Ok
Well considering I thought I was listening to Neil Diamond for half the day… I thought this was “aight.
Neil Young’s vocals are terrible, a full album is too much.
when im in a being listenable competition and this is my opponent:
Solid album. Nice tunes, for chilling but otherwise album doesnt really stand out to me. A few good songs that have some replayability for me.
Okay I like southern man but otherwise, why did we let this man become a solo artist? I think that the songs would be better not sung by him
it's fine i suppose. could probably use a re-listen
- gefiel mir gut
Enjoyable
Solid, nothing special. 6/10
It's fine music. I listened for this over and over and I don't have a very strong impression about it. It's soft, chill, candle light music.
Never knew that love song was his. Neil continues to surprise me (3.5/5)
This is good, but I don’t hear anything that differentiates it from any of the several other albums by Neil Young on this list. I know he is talented, but to be the most represented artist here I think should come with a bit more variety in the work presented. no offense, Neil. I just don’t understand the rationale that went into assembling the list.
Neil can write some pretty good songs, but he insists on singing them. It works on some of them, but I really don't like his voice most of the time.
used to be an all-timer and now it's just kinda...there...6/10
Distinct sound not as good as later stuff
Fuckin Neil Young man. Great song, sleepy, upbeat, sleepy, rockin, annoying, melodic, sleepy again. He's just got too much material.
Neil Young still sounds like a muppet, but this is at least bearable.
Best Song: Southern Man. Neil finally bringing the energy to play. The way his unique vocal qualities mirror that of the guitar are fantastic. Worst Song: Cripple Creek Ferry. They've just gotta stop with this "Cripple Creek" business. Overall: I've learned to love me some Neil Young, but a lot of this album harkens back to how I felt when I didn't quite "get" him. I think he sometimes gets stuck in this awkward middle ground, where he doesn't rock as hard as he's capable, nor does he recede into the muted and melancholy singer-songwriter that he also excels at, and instead lands in a relatively boring middle. This album has too much of that middle.
Smooth and mellow, like a highland whiskey. Come to think of it, ...
difficult to evaluate because I know so many CSNY titles and it's hard to compare. 3
Southern Man and Birds are great tracks. Rest is half decent. 3.5stars
This album sounds like the intermediate step between folk-rock and what Neil Young's music eventually became, so it's neither here nor there. Many of the tracks are basically acoustic, and no one can pull off having piano on every other track. It sounds a bit like a very minimalistic version of those symphonic covers of rock songs, and again, the folk charm that would make this type of arrangement work isn't there. Best track: "Southern Man".
Lmao I don’t understand why Neil Young deserves every second of music he’s ever put out on this list. I continue to stand by the fact that he’s fine, but genuinely all of his music sounds the same to me. And his voice gets real old after a while.
I still don't like this voice very much, but the harmonies largely make up for that.
solid album, good voice, can’t complain, good country rock album
Easy to listen to, not to many stand out songs other than Southern Man which is fantastic. 3.5
An enjoyable listen although quite slow moving in parts
Meh.
Not an unpleasant listening experience. Feel like I can hear influence on later artists. Not my thing.
There are too many Neil Young albums on this list, please eliminate three I am not a crackpot.
I’m not a massive alternative rock fan (or a Neil young fan at that) but this was a nice listen, although I thought it was a bit whiny, I still enjoyed it
Кантри для любителей кантри. Ничего особенного. Обычная деревенская музыка для реднеков.
Интересный голос, но именно этот альбом не сильно попал в меня
++: Southern Man, Don't Let It Bring You Down +: Tell Me Why, After the Goldrush, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Till the Morning Comes, Oh, Lonesome Me, When You Dance I Can Really Love, Cripple Creek Ferry +-: I Believe in You 7,6/10
this album was good but i don’t think that i would listen to it again. there are some good songs on here though, such as; southern man, birds and i believe in you. overall this album was good, it’s just not my style!
Maybe because it leans into his folk side more but this is a neil young album i'm finally okay with.
I like this better than the other CSNY solo albums we’ve seen here. Some powerful songs included here, but I find I like Till the Morning Comes best.
This is a solid album and “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” is one of my favorite songs. Wish I could give it 3.5.
This used to be my favorite album as a teenager, but today I found it super annoying. His voice grated on my nerves.
OK. Bit spare, almost spartan. 3
There's a good run of songs starting with Only Love Can Break Your Heart through Don't Let it Bring You Down - Southern Man being the standout - but Neil Young is definitely a Greatest Hits artist.
It was ok. Never a NY fan but it was not bad.
I love Neil Young but his high pitched singing on a few of these songs was almost nursery rhymish, I still liked most of it but he lost a few cool points on that.
Now I have never listened to a full Neil young record so this was the first time diving into one of his complete works. I respect the song craft, the intention and the urgency but many of the tunes did not land with me! I could chalk it up to a different sociopolitical context of folk music or maybe just from a taste perspective I was not too big of a fan of his voice, I am not sure. Either way I connected more with the songs that had some tempo and a drummer, the slow folk songs while beautiful did not grab me as much as I thought they might. It did make me interested in the rest of his catalog though!
无感
Never been a huge fan of Neil. I don't mind this, but I'm not sure i'm a convert
Yep, sounds like Neil Young. Some stuff I recognize from the radio or something. Voice is acquired taste, but harmonies are wonderful.
Neil Young’s voice is a bit whiny for me. I know it’s what makes him unique, but sometimes it doesn’t work, like in After the Gold Rush. Other times it really does and he makes something beautiful like I Believe in You. I think having harmonies behind him really helps. Of course the best song on this album is Southern Man.
Ehh it's fine. Beyond Southern Man I think it's just fine. It's no Harvest.
This was okay 3/5
5/10
6/10
An ok album ***
First three songs did nothing for me. BUT wow Southern Man is a great song. The rest of this album is pretty solid too. Birds is really a beautiful song. Overall although it’s not my thing,I like this album and will revisit some songs.
Maybe the best Neil Young?
Neil Young can get away with doing this kind of boring stuff because he's got a weird distinctive voice
This one might need another dozen or so listens
I am finding that I do like Neil Young kinda.
Didn't blow me away, he can write a good song he can't necessarily sing it
I've lost count of how many Neil Young album we have gotten by now but it's really become too many. I have, due to them not being on Spotify since quite recently, skipped a few. Was needless to say not expecting much of this album after all the others, I did think it was ok though. I don't really see the greatness of these songs but I think "Southern Man" stood out as the best. I'll give it a weak 3 and hope there are not that many more Neil Young albums left.
I can respect Young as a songwriter but this just wasn't for me!
I don't have much to say about this album other than it's calm country folk music, I enjoyed listening to it. 3/5
3.5, fitted to the activity whilst listening but not my usual vibe
-I definitely like the rock elements best -Another good album for pondering and yearning -Imma be real I can’t stand his voice in some of these songs but it’s cool in some others -Favorites are Southern Man and When You Dance I Can Really Love
Melancholy, a bit tedious in parts. Overall not bad! 5/10
Ganz ok
this album, in my opinion, is fine. just fine. it’s not really my cup of tea. i can see why people adore this record, but i just can’t enjoy it the same, which is disappointing. sometimes the twang of young’s voice was pleasant, but when stripped back bare, it could be most unpleasant. i wish i liked this more because of how hyped this album is. :(
I know Neil Young gets a lot of hate here, and I can see why people are annoyed he has so many albums on the list. However, he's not that bad. I don't think he's brilliant either but this is a solid record with some nice songs and a good atmosphere. Not a huge fan of his voice but apart from that it's solid. Fav songs: - Tell Me Why - Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Perushyvää Neil Youngia. Sitä perus countrya mitä siltä oottaakin. Parhaat: Southern Man
Solid album by Neil, not as deep as some of his other tunes, but overall an enjoyable listen
Decent album. Southern Man is the song I like most off this one.
Enjoyed it
No surprises here, it was about as Neil Young as Neil Young can get.
I liked it but didn't think it was amazing
Feels like a classic Neil Young album. A little sporadic for me, but just a little.
Neil Young-After the Gold Rush [#186/#90] ☆☆☆ Voice is an acquired taste. Mainly folk pop (besides "Southern Man" and "When You Dance..."). This is early Neil who's still working out the kinks of his sound. Highlights: "After the Gold Rush" (piano-based ballad, mournful French horn solo), "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" (slow and strummy, a bit ramshackle when the backup vocals come in), "Birds" (piano ballad, verses sung in a bit of a deeper register, gospel-like backup vocals (double-tracked vocals?))
Not a Neil Young fan, but I thought this one was better than the later album I already listened to. It just gets to sound repetitive and whiny after a while.
The music's good, albeit folk-rock is not my thing. But the voice! I can't stand it.
Nice listening, thought I find his voice to be a little thin.
A frail earnestness towards life and music. Almost naive, but at least it feels genuine. Harvest is better though.
It was good
Folky
A couple thoughts on this album. Firstly, it has very pleasant melodies, many songs give the vibe of smiles in the sunshine. That being said, most of the vocals sound like Carl from that Jimmy Newton show. So not the most pleasant
Didn't get it at the start but some great tracks at the end. Would probably go 3.5 stars in truth but if I must, I'd have to round down to 3
If I'm going to sit down and listen to Neil Young, I prefer his later stuff with Crazy Horse. But his folkier stuff is alright too.
folk totale, piacevole ma non da ascoltare intero dopo un po mi ha scocciaot
Obvious quality and many of my friends are fans but not my cup of tea.
Patchy, I'd say.
Surprisingly like this album. Never listened to it before and thought Neil young was too hippie shit, but it was calming, relaxing, and thoughtful. I think one song is in some Adam Sandler movie lol. Not a bad start.
there was a mean guitar solo
It was fine. Nothing really stood out to me.
Only Love Can Break Your Heart is great. Southern Man and Don't Let It Bring You Down pretty good Album not really my thing though idk.
I've never been the biggest fan of Neil Young and whilst I was yet again not blown away by this album, it did make for quite pleasant background listening.
I enjoyed it. The first evidence that this Neil Young fella is worth of his reverence. It’s a warm hug of an album. And it was good to hear the original version of Only Love Will Break your Heart.
Je connaissais Neil Young plus folk, moins rock. Il y a quelque chose de la désillusion ici.
It's Neil Young. Some songs have guitar and are like la la la, some songs have piano and are like wa wa wa. It's perfectly okay.
It's a good album, but I don't consider it outstanding.
I like Neil Young a lot, but this album (on a first time listen) didn't really grab me.
Decent album
I suppose one Neil young album has to be on this list. I’d have thought Harvest. But anyhow… Neil Young is what most people think about Bob Dylan. That other people do his songs better. That’s not necessarily true with Dylan as he digs deeply into genre and style and vocalises accordingly. Neil doesn’t have the vocal tonal range of a Dylan. And while it’s easy to dismiss a lot of his songs because of this, if you listen to Dolly, Emmy Lou and Linda’s version of after the gold rush, or Neil himself backed by the Band the strength of the songs comes through. But mostly I’m not impressed by his work. Strident. Loud mouthed. A peace loving hippie who seems to love conflict. I might be too hard. I’ve never met him and I haven't done the deep dive. But while this is fine I’ll go back to other versions of Neil’s work. And really Harvest is a better album.
I had assumed that this album would be as annoying as the many (MANY) copycat albums that came like a flurry of pale carbon copies its wake, but I can actually see why this record is as beloved and influential as it is. Some great tunes (Only Love Can Beak Your Heart is my favourite, but most of my fondness is based on the St Etienne cover of the early 90s), great playing and singing and some surprisingly muscular playing (including electric guitar)_ when required. I understand why this is the bible for people who are into the singer-songwriter thing, especially if you want the added hipster cred of saying "well, actually, After the Goldrush is a better album than Harvest" (which it isn't). It's OK, but not really my thing.
It’s not Harvest, so I assumed it wouldn’t be that great, but it is actually very good.
Tell Me Why - I think this is a good song. I don't have anything to add to it. The only issue I have is that it doesn't really feel like a good intro After The Gold Rush - it's alright. A bit boring at first, but I liked when the weird trumpet came in. Only Love Can Break Your Heart - I feel something is off. It's a bit repetitive and boring, but I didn't hate it. Southern Man - I like this intro. Instrumentals are great. I love this. Would definitely listen again. Till the Morning Comes - I guess he's waiting till the morning comes. I like this. Oh, Lonesome Me - oh no I hate the sound of the harmonica. This song is not it for me. It was also a bit slow for me. Don't Let It Bring You Down - I liked listening to this. I do feel like there's something missing in the chorus. Birds - It's forgettable for me. It's not bad, but meh When You Dance I Can Really Love - I don't like the vocals in this, and also the chorus seems off for me, but I love the instrumentals and the outro I Believe In You - it's boring, but again I love the outroo Cripple Creek Ferry - it's whatever. Forgettable Overall thought: I have mixed feelings about this album. I like the sound of most songs, but it's also kind of boring. I don't think the album instrumentally feels like a whole, but lyrically the songs connect much better. Ranking: 3/5
My bad but not my favorite. Easy listening background music for me.
Lief eher im Hintergrund, hat mir aber gut gefallen. 3,3.
kinda rad kinda lame
I like Neil Young but is not one of my faves by him.
Decent album, probably wouldn't revisit
Loooved Southern man and a couple of other songs, but I wouldn't listen to it for hours
That’s another one listened from the legendary Mr Young
Didn't hate it, but definitely didn't like it either. Especially his voice is too whiny for me most of the times. I liked "When you dance I can really love"
Helemaal niet zo heel gek hoor
not on spoofy pretty good tho 3
not his best
Neil Young has a very distinct voice that has a lot of subtle range. This is an easy to listen to soft rock album that is very much of its time. None of the songs stuck out to me as all timers but i also wouldn't call any of them bad. Overall a solid album but I will probably be searching elsewhere on Young's catalog if I'm going to listen to him.
Just a solid folk album all around. With any Neil Young you gotta accept his voice for what it is - at its best sincere, authentic, and gentle; at its worst nasally and heady. The songwriting is beautiful, at times haunting, and I love all of the instruments he brings into this thing. Some sick harmonica, and at times this thing straight up rocks ("Southern Man", "When You Dance I Can Really Love"). Album got better on each listen and I could see it really growing more on me with time.
"After the Gold Rush" by Neil Young, released in 1970, is a timeless classic that showcases Young's songwriting at its peak. The album is a masterclass in folk-rock, with its introspective lyrics and haunting melodies leaving a lasting impact. The title track, "After the Gold Rush," is a poignant reflection on environmental issues, while songs like "Tell Me Why" and "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" delve into themes of love and loss. Young's unique voice, coupled with his distinctive guitar work and the addition of backing vocals from artists like Graham Nash, creates a rich sonic tapestry. While some may find the production a bit sparse compared to more polished recordings, this rawness adds to the album's charm and authenticity. Overall, "After the Gold Rush" is a must-listen for any music fan, showcasing Neil Young's songwriting prowess and musical vision.
I grew up listening to Neil Young via my father. I have an appreciation for Neil Young, and an enormous amount of respect for him as a musician and as a person. But, I can take or leave his music. Love him as part of CSNY and appreciate his songwriting, but it’s not for me. Let’s put it this way - I have respect for him taking a stance and removing his music from Spotify, but I can’t say I’ve missed his music.
I'm not into country but this album was good.
The Third Neil Young album I have heard, and I have to say the best one yet. I don't know if I am simply getting used to Neil's voice, if it's actually better on this album, or if it has dulled my mind and senses beyond repair.
Oh si esto está muy bueno, y eso es a pesar que el odioso country hace su presencia en algunas canciones.
Interessante
Really good. Nice melodies and songwriting. I have a few of the songs stuck in my head. I listened to the album all the way through though, so I will have to go back and see their names. This is either a high 3 or a low 4 for me. Enjoyed it the whole way through.
Neil Young is an excellent songwriter. The lyrics are timely and the melodies and harmonies will draw you in. I can’t exactly give the same praises to his singing voice. That being said, the album is a pretty solid listen. You can also tell that Neil Young has been a massive inspiration on music for the past sixty years. Personal favorites on the album were Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Southern Man, and Birds. Three stars.
A pretty in offensive album. Listened to it while unpacking after a long trip, so I didn't give it my full attention. Nothing really notable about it other than I didn't realize Neal Young sang in an almost falsetto so often. I just hope Neil Young remembers a southern man don't need him around anyhow.
Liked the first song, sounded like quite a modern singer-songwriter track, the rest of it was of variable quality and I can't really recall it very well. I quite like Neil Young's voice, he can't sing all that well but it sounds quite indie and authentic. That said I don't think there was much to write home about here.
Pretty ok, but I'm really not a fan of his falsetto voice.
Songs where he isn’t using his head voice are pretty nice
Some really enjoyable parts and then the high pitched singing
I understand why folks love him,. He’s just not my thing. I like the songs though
Not very interesting to me
It's Neil Young. Never loved him, but don't hate this.
Interesting voice. Decent songs.
This was alright but not for me 3/5
B- Tell Me Why 3 After The Goldrush 3 Only Love Can Break Your Heart 3 Southern Man 4 Till The Morning Comes 3 Oh Lonesome Me 3 Don't Let It Bring You Down 3 Birds 3 When You Dance I Can Really Love 3 I Believe In You 3 Cripple Creek Ferry 3 Maybe it's the Stockholm Syndrome from the 57 Neil Young albums on this generator, but I kind of like Neil now...
It's not bad. I could listen to it if someone else wanted to, but I don't see myself seeking it out on my own.
It’s ok, not bad but not great
Strays close to Dylan-esque levels of annoying whiney vocals but the content and musicianship just about compensates. And St Etienne's version of Only Love Can Break Your Heart was so much better.
I really enjoyed Only Love Can something something Heart, but the others swung between dull and hum-along classics.
can only listen on youtube 1. tell me why 7.5/10 2. after the gold rush 3.89/10, not my taste of music 3. only love can break your heart 7/10, bit repetitive however i enjoyed 4. southern man 8.75/10, really enjoyed the guitar solo moment, longer song, more upbeat! 5. till the morning comes 6/10, short songs but made its point 6. oh, lonesome me 7/10, bit of a sadder song with a country kick 7. don't let it bring you down 6/10, generic song 8. birds 5.5/10, sadder song again, taking it on on your own 9. when you dance i can really love 8/10, more upbeat, more of a love song kinda 10. i believe in you 7/10, best way to describe is a letter 11. cripple creek ferry 5/10, very short overall 6/10, not exactly my taste in music however i can see how people could enjoy the soft not forced voice
I originally scored this a 4, wrote half a review, and then never finished it. Returning to it after “Ragged Glory,” it may be suffering from being my second Neil Young album of the day, which may just be too much. Or maybe it’s suffering from the fact that there are 7 Neil Young albums on the list(!), and here at #1015 we still haven’t hit the last of them (“Harvest”). Neil Young’s voice can be hit or miss. It can be grating, or it can work harmoniously with his very well-crafted songs. Sometimes harmony is the key - his voice is often best when layered with others. “After the Gold Rush” is near the finest of folk rock, with “Southern Man” foremost among a solid collection of tracks. While that song is the highlight, the album as a whole keeps a steady vibe even if it never hits that peak again. Interestingly, despite recording the album with most of Crazy Horse, the album is credited just to Neil Young, rather than Neil Young & Crazy Horse. I remain beguiled by the choices groups make in regards to solo v. group naming.
Sometimes Neil Youngs voice works (harmonies) but a lot of the time it sounds like he is straining and its not pleasant. Southern Man was the highlight of this album for me.
Great folk album.
An album with a lot of nice and sweet songs. I liked Tell me why and Til the Morning Comes, with Birds being my favorite of the album.
Solid album although some songs were super short. Not a fan of Neil Young's very nasally singing voice, which is more apparent in some songs over others. Standout tracks: Southern Man, Only Love Can Break Your Heart.
Grating, with doses of greatness
Couldn't listen uninterrupted on Spotify. Was clicking through ads throughout the album. Mostly enjoyed.
Pretty cool singer songwriter album . "Til the Morning Comes" is also nice, but like 30 seconds long?
Son 3ème album. Mélange de country-folk et rock. Des fois ça vient me chercher, des fois ça me laisse mi-chaud/mi-froid. Only love can break your heart c'est bon. Note de passage assurée.
Seriously? I've already had six Neil Young albums. SIX!!! One just in the last few days. This has to stop. I can't take much more. Mercy, album generator, mercy. That said, I liked this one better than the last several. Woe is me music, Oh, Lonesome Me style, is generally not my vibe. But this is a pretty good version of said music and I would probably like it if I liked it.
Fairly Interesting, catchy material. I enjoyed its vibe.
Solid and good listening. He went back-and-forth between big chorus harmonies like the Eagles and just his own voice, a variety which I liked. Higher pitched voice, but lyrics that I felt he meant.
I think this album would have been really good, had it not been for me not being able to get past Neil Young's high, whiney voice. Instrumentals were solid, though.
Interesting melodies. Don't care for the thin instrumentation.
Recommended for consumption with psychedelics.
erm, lovely, but also quite samey in the second half
I liked it more than I thought I would.
I guess the world just keeps turning, & so do I. I’m old enough that all of these classic albums are of my time. But the world moves on, musical tastes change, as have mine. That’s not to say that I’m up to date & love ‘today’s music’ - I don’t. But my tastes have moved deeply into jazz & world music as I’ve aged. So listening to these old chestnuts, my attitude is “wow, they’re dated. Some of it’s ok, but most of it doesn’t speak to me anymore”. This album is the same. Interesting for a single run through, but as a whole, not interesting enough to listen to again.
A timeless Neil Young.
Very surprised by this album by how much I liked it. Never really got into Neil Young although I knew it was a classic. Particularly liked the live tracks featuring The Birds.
Gear: Meze 109 Pro Mische: erschreckend schwache Vocals viel zu überlagernd und zentral, Horn in "After the Goldrush" zumindest überraschend, "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" mit ungewohntem Impact für dieses insgesamt seicht bis mellow abgestimmte Album Mugge: trotz schöner Folk-Melodien und Lyrics fehlt mir der "Harvest"-Faktor - und Nerven für *diese* Young-Stimme Wertung: 3/5 (+1 für "Don't Let It Bring You Down")
Like most Neil Young albums here it was fine to me. Raised the thought that maybe the list folks were struggling to find 1001 albums at the project’s inception - it seems some artists got their whole discography dumped into the book without question (see: Bob Dylan). I’m not arguing that these artists and their albums aren’t influential, but surely not every Neil Young album was massively groundbreaking enough to warrant inclusion here.
Neil Young merci pour tous tes albums youtube-friendly mais on veut plus te voir ici.
Neil Young il serait tant de passer à autre chose, le COVID c'est plus d'actualité, on en a ras le cul de devoir ouvrir Youtube pour t'écouter
Can hear the remnants of CSNY and the precursors to "Harvest". Some decent songs here, but "Southern Man" is the standout (on which Nils Lofgren plays piano). Didn't realize Annie Lennox's "Don't Let it Bring You Down" was a cover. Good album, but I prefer "Harvest". 3.7
Maybe I only like Neil Young when he does group projects. I enjoyed parts of this album, but some of it was too 70's for me. Another 2.5.
Oh dear Uncle Neil. The 3rd album of yours we’ve been given so far and each one has got worse. What will the 25th one be like? I’m afraid that your vocals were harshly exposed on most of these tracks. I thought I was listening to Big Bird from Sesame Street on ‘Don’t Let It Bring You Down’. It was only when the guitars got cranked and the background vocals pitched up that you got away with it. ‘Southern Man’ was great. ‘Oh, Lonesome Me’ was good. ‘When You Dance’ and ‘I Believe In You’ are the only other tracks to make it to the prestigious Uncle Neil playlist. A low 3 stars as it’s better than both Elt@n Jo!n and Britney Spears, who I apparently gave 2 stars too.
Young’s voice isn’t to my liking, but the lyrics are good. 3/5.
God. Fuck. Fine, I'll review another Neil Young album. I'm not sure why I need to keep going through this gauntlet. There's tons of amazing albums that I haven't gotten on this list. Notably, the jazz selection is really lacking. But here we are again, listening to Neil Young. I still don't like him. I just hate the sound of his voice. He sounds like Ben Shapiro's falsetto. The ironic thing is that his vocal harmonies sound fucking great. If he would just do more of a Beach Boys things (or, dare I say it, a CSNY type of thing), I might really like him. Instead, I get one of his albums, and I just put it off for weeks because I know it will take all day. 3/5 The songs with harmonies are really great and have this timeless feel to them. Then Neil Young wanders off by himself, and I am filled with rage at his voice, which somehow combines the worst elements of Kermit the Frog and Alvin and the Chipmuinks
Ja het is moooi ,maar wel weer Neil Young. zo zeikerig.
This is my fourth Neil Young album from the generator. I’m going to be honest, I don’t think many artists need 4+ albums on this list. I’ve had a mixed bag with Neil Young albums. I loved “On The Beach” and “Rust Never Sleeps” (which I only got generated two days ago), but I felt more meh about “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”. This album is joining the ranks of “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”. It was fine. Few of the songs stood out to me and a few of them really grated. Fav track: I Believe In You
Ninguna canción disponible en Spotify. Una lástima, pero se convierte en inclasificable.
enjoyed, made me want to listen to carly simon. very fall and wintery
Still don’t like his voice. Songs were ok but can’t get past his singing voice. Nails to chalkboard.
Good
Meh, kinda boring. Not for me.
Okay I guess - not a huge Neil Young fan. Falsetto is a bit much, songs are samey throughout the album
Tell Me Why - 4/5 After the Goldrush - 3/5 sounds like my high notes Only Love Can Break Your Heart - 3/5 Southern Man - 4/5 Til the Morning Comes - 3/5 Oh, Lonesome Me - 3/5 Don't Let it Bring You Down - 3/5 Birds - 3/5 When You Dance - 4/5 I Believe in You - 3/5 Cripple Creek Ferry - 3/5

Starts off brilliantly but rather tails off towards the end Decent overall but not spectacular
It's fine, not too bad, not really my kind of music though.
The 2009 remaster is the only thing that can be adding the weight of history to the very sound of After the Gold Rush. In real terms, this has an immense amount of Neil songwriting talent jammed in: Tunes, time, emotion. Plenty raw, just without the gritty soul hurt which jumps out of more ragged grooves. And that's what I am, subjectively, here for.
Decent country vibes, southern man is the only song that I liked. The high pitch tone is draining. Thank god I didn’t like this enough to want it on Spotify.
I am really on the fence with this one. His voice is strangly high and doesnt work with some of the songs. But there are a few songs where the high voice fits really well like Southern man and Dont let it bring you down. But the high voice isnt even his singing voice, he has a couple songs were he sings normally and its pretty good. I had to venture to youtube for this one and it was annoying.... Im probably somewhere between 2-3 stars. Its hard to say where im leaning too.
Not my fav Neil Young album but he’s definitely a great poet.
Heard before. I liked the first few songs the most, after that it kinda fizzled out for me. Sad and melancholy album. + Tell Me Why + Only Love Can Break Your Heart + Till The Morning Comes
Has some iconic sections, but the back half of the album feels like one static, overlong song
The melodies are at times sweet and other times rough, juxtaposed with Young's unique vocals gives this album an unmistakable sound.
Pretty great, though listening to it all at once highlights the limits of Young's approach too.
Good background music for work; nice but not amazing; probs wont revisit
Melodic, folksy, and pleasant.
A few decent cuts sprinkled throughout but quite a few sleepers surrounding those. I think of all the Neil Young I've heard, this is the most enjoyment I've gleaned from him, but still not amazing in my opinion. 6/10
Ok
Nice overall, not really for me
good
It had some good songs but also some annoying ones.
Solid ez rock album with a lot of known jams. Good for a mellow time but not for me 3/5
It's a Neil Young album. If you like Neil, you like this. Melodic opening tracks. "Tell Me Why", "After the Gold Rush" are great.
Mid
Enjoyed it a lot
Ok
Wisselend, sommige nummers best goed, sommige saai.
Nice to hear the original of Only Love. I forgot that was one of Neil's. This made we warm a little more to the rest of the album, but after a while I found I'd stopped listening properly.
Only Love Can Break Your Heart is sung with so much sorrow. The message in Southern Man is more powerful than the actual music. The album fades a little towards the end, but it's still very decent
I appreciate the ethos that went in the creation of this album. Props for that. Better Neil Young albums out there, though.
Just ok and probably not something I’ll go back and listen to again
Album 1 of 1001 After the Gold Rush, Neil Young Favorite Song: Southern Man Great songwriting. I love the musicianship as well with well placed crescendos to emphasize parts. Folk isn't really my thing but there are moments to appreciate.
Many tracks were omitted from the album since he pull
I like Neil Young, still have some of his vinyl from back in the day, but I feel this album is very overrated for what it is, and hangs basically on everything that went before it. Neil never was one for happy cheerful singing or lyrics, but this album pushes the whiny boundaries a little bit beyond the limits even for Neil on a number of tracks. A couple of good tracks in there, which in their own entity I would select to listen to... but not the album as a whole, I wouldn't select this album to listen to.
Can't make my mind up about Neil Young The man can't sing but he makes good music. Some of the tracks on this album are great, some are boring. Wouldn't put it on again to listen to the whole thing but would listen to individual ones off it.
Not my fave Neil Young album.
I’m sure if you love Neil Young you’ll love this. Personally I find his voice a bit too whiny which distracts me from the content.
