"Odelay" is the fifth studio by American studio musician Beck. It was the follow-up album to "Mellow Gold" and began more subdued and acoustic wiith only three songs recorded and one making this album, producers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf were then exchanged for The Dust Brothers who had worked with The Beastie Boys and Young MC. Good move. This album has everything thrown in it. I like this description of the music - elements of folk, country, louche electronica, old-school rap, noise rock, sampldelia and pyschedelia. Yeah, and sometimes within the same song. The album received universal acclaim and won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album. A thick guitar sounds starts "Devil's Haircut." Great production and a foreshadowing of all the busy-ness in most of these songs. The beats. A sampling of James Brown. A collage of pyschedelia and ending with distorted screaming. "Hot Wax" begins with a country-blues guitar, a sound Kid Rock wanted to become but much, much cooler. The song progresses into almost Chemical Brothers' territory. A spacey, dreamy intro transitions into a Beatles' "Taxman" song structure with a revved-up beat in "The New Pollution." An organ jam. The media and internet polluting. Not so new anymore. Floating keyboard and guitar sounds highlight "Jack-ass." It's a ballad. A jazzy- night club beat. Hey, this song stays focused. One of the few. My favorite on the album. This is a close to The Flaming Lips and, funny enough, The Lips have been Beck's backing band. A melancholy keyboard beginning and then Beck goes hip-hop in "Where It's At." Everbody saying, screaming, singing "Two turntables and a microphone." Robots, Beck, distorted vocals. Heavy scratching. "Sissyneck" is more groovy and bass driven. Slide guitar and country with a hip-hop beat. The album ends with "Ramshackle," one of the songs written prior to The Dust Brothers. Slower, acoustic guitar, beating on buckets, melancholic again. This album probably would not have an entirely bad album if it stayed this course. This album still sounded fresh. Yes, most songs are very busy...lots going on. I typically tend to like simple music with a few instruments and sticks to one or two styles. This is anything but that but it totally works. For me, far and away, my favorite Beck album.

Beck is a vibe, and always inventive.
This Beck built well on the previous Beck and gave me more of what I wanted with less filler. Mellow Gold lost me more than it kept me, though at the time the mix of musical styles really set this stuff apart. Loser and Beercan are all I remember off of that one. Maybe that has something to do with the song titles that had little do with the songs? Whereas on Odelay, somebody sat Beck down and said "Look. Simple titles. Call these songs the same thing that the people who will listen to them will call them." So we get Devil's Haircut, Hotwax, Lord Only Knows, The New Pollution, Derelict, Where It's At, Readymade... Each one of these I can immediately hear the tune in my head. Not as a good as Midnite Vultures and Sea Change, though.

Very odd, in a good way, with a dazzling range of styles and genres. Influences from rock, country, hip-hop, dance, and a bunch of other fields. I already loved the "big" songs, but was pleasantly surprised by how good some of the others were as well. Falls just short of a 5 🌟, but only just!

Beck to this day is probably the best at sounding like Beck. His quirky compositions, quasi-pointless lyrics, to the way he sings, all are token Beck. If a listener likes that, they will never be disappointed, and if a listener does not, they will likely never change their mind, regardless of the album.

Not gonna lie, I am not a Beck fan. From time to time I convince myself to listen his discography, but tend to end a little bit bored. Maybe it’s his delivery, that monotone voice, because the music itself rocks big time. Well, turns out that I’m here, listening to the famous Odelay, and did not dislike it. The first 40 minutes ran smoothly, but later was checking how much time left in the album. I guess it’s me, not him with his inexpressive voice. 3.5 / 5
There's something pretty quirky about Beck's sound, a blend of rock with elements of hip-hop, country and other influences and a heavy twist of Americana. The album was a good listen but I'm not sure I would have it on repeat

Beck is great. A lot of his stuff is inventive and timeless and this album is no exception.
I love Beck. I have for a long time. Beck doesn't always make sense. Musically he is great, like Thundercat, I'm not sure he always takes it seriously, but do you have to? Isn't that part of being an artist?

Почти что на каждом треке настроение альбома скакало туда-сюда, но это далеко не минус, а как раз наоборот. Мне не так сильно зашли более лиричные треки, но я не могу не отметить талант, когда он глубоко ощущается буквально на каждой песне. (7.5)

Beck isn’t my usual style but I do rly like this album. Some of the songs are just up my alley while others aren’t that appealing. I like the uniqueness of it the different sounds and instruments.

Not my thing
What a throwback! From my teens into my early twenties I was in love with Beck’s music. I’ve definitely fallen behind with his newer releases, but Odelay was always on of my favourites (Sea Change might have been my actual favourite). I’m excited to listen to this today. Songs I already knew: all of them Favourites: Devil’s Haircut, Jack-Ass, Where It’s At What a musician Beck is! My understanding is that he generally writes everything himself, and plays each instrument himself too. Maybe it’s having that specific vision which means something fantastic can be created as there is no dilution from outside sources. Beck tends to be just the right amount of strange and experimental for my tastes - it leans into the weird, but never so much that it becomes hard to listen to. This album traverses genres from alternative, funk, hip hop, and singer-songwriter - but again, never strays too far out of its own box as to sound too jarring. This is a fantastic album that I’d recommend to anybody.

Haven’t finished listening to this yet, but so far it’s not bad! Keeping an open mind cause ion really listen to this genre of music. That being said, it’s giving me stoner, hippie, cowboy vibes with a bit of surfer dude sprinkled in. The instrumental sound pairs really well with Becks voice n style of singing. So far an enjoyable listening experience.

This album has so much going on and it all works so well. Every little sound effect adds positively to the record. Has a ton of range and is thoroughly enjoyable. Production, lyrics, instrumentation were all perfect and my only critique is that it isn’t that exciting. I believe it to be one of the rare times when an album is completely realized and executed exactly as the artist intended. 4/5
Beck’s idiosyncratic style finally reaches a wider audience on this, his fifth album. He’s unafraid to experiment, gleefully flitting between styles while keeping his quirks.
Don`t like it, pretty boring, some good elements in some songs but that's it.

Albeit a bit weird at times, it's not made in an unpleasant way and sounds quite good overall. I'll admit I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics though, so have little to no idea on the thematic aspect of this album.

This brings back a lot of memories. I've always loved Beck. Though this album was never a favorite of mine. Some songs make my skin crawl for some reason.
Today's album is by alternative rock artist Beck. I am familiar with Beck's singles such as Loser, and Novacane, but have never delved into his stuff too much. Beck is an artist who is great at exploring several genres of music, blending them together, and making it his own. For example, on this one record, there are hints of country, folk, hip hop, rock, and psychadelica. I thouroughly enjoyed the genre exploration, because each song could sound vastly different than the last, and it made it exciting to keep listening to the record. It didn't get stale. I really enjoyed the heavy sludgy guitars in the song Minus, as well as the bluesy folk blended with hip hop sound of Hotwax. By times, the music sounds like the Beastie Boys. Beck's lyrics are hilariously nonsensical, and may only make sense when one is stoned. A few examples of some noteworthy lyrics include: From Hotwax: Sawdust songs of the plaid bartenders, Western unions of the country westerns, Silver foxes looking for romance, In their chainsmoke Kansas flashdance ass-pants Or a few examples from Minus: It's a sensation, A bankrupt corpse, In the garbage glasses, With the crutches of frogs... And... Radiation, Feeling the force, Karaoke, Vomiting morons..... Overall, a great listen today, and one I will definately revisit in the future! Very good album and one I listen to a ton of. Probably due to the who produced it sounds like a stoner version of a Beastie Boys record. Which isn't a bad thing per se. I think his later albums are more interesting even though I'm probably the only one.
I think Beck is fairly brilliant. He blends styles with quirky lyrics and fun, interesting, and contemporary feeling music.
I was a big fan of this in high school. This as aged incredibly well. Still an amazing record.
This is a great record all around. Some crazy sounds that all work together and some amazingly catchy songs.
This feels kinda messy, and not in a good way. Maybe I would have liked it more without the hip hop influences?

I haven't listened to this since the late 90s, when it was everywhere, all the time, in Sydney. I enjoyed the nostalgia and I think it generally holds up
A few bleeps here, a few bloops there, a hip hop drum beat, some random glitchy noises. Does not make an album. Beck is a goddamn legend and a chameleon, but the hype around this album is baffling to me.
Maybe my all-time favorite of his. Low-hi funkiness and sleazy folk rock-y dance music. DJ Funkypants.

Beck seems like a fun guy, and this was an enjoyable album, I even possibly caught a sample of Candy Shop on one of the tracks. But overall, nothing to write home about. The album cover is creepy and cool at the same time, that dog is wild.
A large part of me is adamant that Beck is overrated. Why all the Grammys and the notoriety for this guy? Who's son is he? But then, I listen to an album, and I sort of get it. We've had a few now, and every time I enjoy myself. This one's got so many cool, retrofuturistic sounds and touches. Weird synth-y stuff is always enjoyable to me, and while there's not much lyrically to his work (or at least not that grabs me, anyway), he's a sonic virtuoso because I think he does most of it all by himself. Beck is still an enigma to me, but I can dig it. Favorite tracks: Derelict, Devils Haircut, Hotwax, Novacane, Ramshackle. Album art: Always thought it was a creature, but it might just be one of those moppy dogs jumping a hurdle. I like the pic, I like the font. It's a cool cover. 4/5

this is the beck we know and appreciate, not that fucking godawful country version of beck we had on that last absolutely forgettable album of his on this list. genuinely can't remember it's name and i don't really want to try. anyway, yeah this album is good mad beck. some good, some average but the good is weird shit.
I'm utterly in love with a woman called Becky. She eats crabs outside the local supermarket every Wednesday evening after finishing her part time job as a labourer. She produces the most enchanting fanny farts that echo around town. I simply must have her.
Mikkel Venge Beck (born 12 May 1973) is a Danish former professional football who played as a forward. He scored three goals in 19 games for the Denmark national team, and represented Denmark at the international Euro 1996 and Euro 2000 tournaments.
Sort of like a respectable Kid Rock. Some standout tracks for sure, "Novacane" in particular really rips, and "Devils Haircut" holds up, but the weirdness leads to some meandering for sure.
Legendary album
Influences that seemed apparent were The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and 90s Hip-Hop, especially A Tribe Called Quest. Some of the computer/electronic sounds he experimented with were difficult to listen to, but did enjoy the general ambiance. Feels very “of its time”.

This was not a good album. The only song I can say I actually enjoyed was Ramshackle. Lord Only Knows, New Pollution, Derelict, Sissyneck, and Readymade were all ok, but the rest was absolutely horrendous. Novacane and High 5 made me feel sick, I had to skip most of them. The singer had a fine voice, not great but fine, and the guitar, bass, and drums were fine. The lyrics, random noises, and just overall weirdness though I did not like. If I could rate in half points, I’d only give this 1.5. Summary, if someone wanted to torture me to death, most of this album is the way to go.

this has been a "i'll get around to it" album for me for a long time, and I'm pleased to say it is phenomenal and fun as hell
It's probably my least favorite Beck album which is to say still pretty awesome and certainly a portent of the incredible magic which has followed this amazing creature and his band. Beck is a wizard and a joy to see in concert. As an aside, I was pretty impressed when he sided with principles instead of money and cancelled Arcade Fire by leaving the tour.
Listening to this I feel like Beck took $100 to the thrift and bought a bunch of 'junk' including vintage hi-fi reel-to-reels, a broken 80's camcorder, some garden tools, a bed frame, and a didgeridoo, then paired them with a guitar, two-turntables and a microphone and turned it into something great. This album is super catch-y, it's fun and I always find something that I'd never heard before. Love this album. It is perhaps the last great analog album prior to the absolute dominance of today's digital production techniques.
I always want to like Beck more than I wind up liking Beck when I listen.
One of the most sonically interesting albums of the 90s.
I put Jack-Ass on a bunch of mixed tapes I made for people. I always enjoyed that that it was so different from the omnipresent Where It's At. The main draw of Beck is that he is not boring.
I don’t get the Beck hype. Is this sound unique? Yes. Is it catchy? At times, yes, but also repetitive. Are there incongruous sounds stitched together in some sort of I’m-on-a-different-level-than-everyone-else vibe? Yes Does that aspect remind me somewhat of improvisational jazz? Unfortunately, yes. Is Derelict a derelict song? Yes. Is this album something special? Eh, not to me.
Better than Mellow Gold. The whole album holds up and Where It's At is the lynch pin to the whole thing. Also, check out The Frogs, where the "that was a good drum break" comes from.
I enjoyed this album. I didn't love it, but I enjoyed it.
While I like Beck's later work more than the stuff that made him famous, there is no doubt that this album is packed with bangers.

This was weird, I thought it was going to be a good weird at first, but then it started throwing in random clicks and beeps which made me think there was a error with my car...odd has great elements but to much randomness

Lot of dudes came in the store and asked "is that Beck? I haven't heard this in a long time." Yes. It's Beck.
Runs the gamut from "fantastic" to "filler." Some of it is key tracks of the 90s. Some of it is bloated nonsense. On the whole a solid album, probably overrated.
Great album, ended up listening to it twice as I was having a rough morning. 2nd listen was much better and reminded me how unique and inventive Beck was back in the mid 90s. It may be a bit disjointed with all the genre melding but I think that's part if what makes it awesome. It's list wirthy

Was a time in the 90s when you could make a career out of this sort of jokey alt-rock, and even get a bit of mainstream play as well. The Butthole Surfers, Cake, this guy etc. Nothing truly bad going on, but also nothing I could ever call essential in any way. Still, compared to the shit that fills the top 50 atm this is high art. 3/5.

Dude was of his time and somehow way ahead of his team, especially on this classic album. White folk lost their collective shit upon release, with good reason. This shit is so fucking good it almost makes me forget that Beck dabbled in Scientology.

I was ready to love this but it’s a bit messy for full marks. Sounds like the worst of The Beastie Boys. Some fun samples and classic cuts but a little shouty for me and a fair amount of nonsense. It’s cool that he’s doing his thing though.
Is Beck cool? Does the pseudo-rap, slacker alt rock sound resonate with anyone? I think I'm being reductive, because it's hard to put Odelay into one box, or even two. Beck Hansen raps and employs drum samples, he strums his acoustic guitar, plays the slide guitar, and a whole lot of other stuff to bend genre to his whim. Odelay is a lot like the dog on the cover: messy, but still full of energy. I admire Beck's ambition and artistic vision. I also wish this album was more focused. The sonic whiplash from the harsh synths at the end of Novacane going into the mellow acoustic strumming of Jack-Ass is making me wish for something else. I'm seriously at a loss. There is no doubt that Beck is a competent songwriter, artist, and producer. The problem is that nothing comes together to form a coherent sound. I can't enjoy Odelay for more than a few minutes because it won't let me. The album is constantly at odds with the listener, as if to say "No, you're listening to it wrong. Start again with this song instead". I don't know if that makes it genius or debilitating or both. For now, I won't give Beck too much credit.
I expected to like this album going into it, but I was surprised by how much I liked it. I don't have much experience with Beck's music, but I'm glad to say I enjoyed this album. The music often takes unexpected turns that leave me pleasantly surprised. My favourite song was Ramshackle.

Seminal album. Arguably Beck's finest effort as it is still filled with purposeful experimentation and not the dry cynicism of some of his later stuff. Very much a snapshot of the potential of music back in `96
An inspired melange but a melange nonetheless, with more than a little overreaching. One wonders if Beck is motivated more by boredom (just to see what works and what he can get away with) or ambition (to be all things to all types of listeners or to provide some form of universalist Rosetta Stone of slacker fin de siecle music). The synthesizing creaks obviously in places — the inert mingling of a tepid Schubert passage (“Unfinished Symphony”) with some middling hip-hop beats. The bits of mid-‘70s Stones and funk sound fine, if toothless, landing as little more than noodling or homage-y nods. The faux-Beastie Boys riffs and cuts sound on-point but fall short of the actual, you know, Beastie Boys. “Jack-Ass” sounds tired, much more lethargic than one recalls – with the backing track outright stolen from Them. One can’t help but think “dilettante” as much as “genius” and also about the originality of such assemblage and whether Beck woulda been better served (and served his listeners better) by just playing it straight, or at least occasionally straighter.

199-whenever: huh? 2022: Golly, the guy's a visionary, etc. OK. Truth is, when this popped up, I thought to myself, ini this order: "Why?" "I hate Loser" and "This is hype with a life of its own", in that order. Its still an oddball album, but not only does it work well, it was a long way from most of the stuff being done in the mid-90s. Arguable, a long way from most stuff done ever in popular music. (I mean, even Beck can get this vibe back any more). Lots of people have tried, but it's never again like the first time, is it? I guess the best way of explaining this is to propose listening to a lot of mid-to-late 60s British pop, and then listening to Revolver and Rubber Soul for the fist time. And then the penny drops.
69/100: I can tell that this is a really smartly written album. A lot of the riffs and sounds clearly took a very talented ear and mind to create. With that being said though, that doesn’t necessarily mean I actually enjoyed the album all that much. Sure, Beck clearly did a great job writing this album and thought very deeply about each song; however, it’s not that fun to listen to. I think it was probably more fun writing this album, honestly. Pretty good, entertaining & better than I expected
Really had fun listening to this one. So many different things going on and it all works in one big musical collage. Leaves me feeling with the anything that anything is possible in music. Some thoughts on each tune as I listen through Devils hair cut: great beat Drums sound soooo good Cool random poetic sounding lyrics “Bad” guitar solo When guitar doubles bass and distorted vocals soo cool Hot wax: more noises feedback guitar solo hooks and distorted vocals on chorus “Karaoke weekend at the suicide shack” Love the enchanted wizard of rhythm bit Jack ass- great melodic bass. sonically pleasing textures New pollution- great pop tune. I like all the retro 60’s stuff. Pretty much the same bass line as taxman :) Lord only knows: cool fake out intro Punk/ country. He’s such a great singer but can just throw away a vocal too. Derelict- cool persuasion. And droney stuff. Novacane- sick groove love the sample of the hits on the sus chord before the first verse. So many sounds on this one! This is where I realized the beauty of this album is that anything and everything fits. Not in a cheesy way but beck really beautifully uses stuff from all genres and he treats all these little genre cliches not like a schticky or exploitational way but like a painter that is using all the colors in his palette. Where it’s at- love this one! Another great bad guitar solo I like the samples on this record- I went to Whosampled.com to try and check out where everything g came from. Way cooler than anything on that David Holmes album we listened to. He gave a shoutout to Gary Wilson so I had to check him out -super weird vocals Minus- cool punky grungy. I guess this is the oddball track on an album that’s already weird all over the place Sissyneck- like the country guitars and dial-tone synths Ready made- cool bass line lots of dissonances over it. Close harmonies in the low vocals is a cool sound High five( rock the Catskills) - more super weird stuff all over the place. classical interlude in the middle Ramshackle- Charlie Haden on upright bass:) Bob Dylan vibes on verses. Cool contrast on chorus. Mostly just one chord so when they do the 2 chord it feels special. Cool contrast having a tune this static placed in this spot of the album.

I’ve never listened to Beck before and I really enjoyed this. I would have given this a 5 had I understood his lyrics a bit more. Some parts really reminded me of RHCP which is not a good thing because I’m always like…what are they talking about

Very familiar with Where it's at and Devil's haircut, but not a big fan of either. Was hoping some of the rest of the album would do something for me, but it didn't.... Spotify would skip right over jackass and diskobox. If I enjoyed the album, I would have tried to find somewhere else. I didn't... Pretty much neutral. Didn't really dislike, but just not for me 2-2.5
1 Nonsense and noise. All overlayed on top of the same goddamn drum track. It doesn’t help that I already thought Beck was boring and a borderline plagiarist. Devil’s Haircut is only cool because of Dude, Where’s My Car and Where It’s At is a bop. Short of that I can’t figure who this is supposed to be for?
3 Never really been able to get into Beck. I appreciate his ability to jump between and blend musical genres, and while I feel he did it pretty well here, no one track gave me the feeling of "I gotta give this song a listen again"... it felt more like he wanted to dip his toes into different genres without getting all the way in. Essentially, every song boils down to being very "Beck" at its core, like the same song was wearing thirteen different outfits. It's not a bad album by any means, but I think it's far from a masterpiece - though I'll give kudos to Ramshackle for being a solid closer. Would maybe listen again if I'm not crucified by the entire indieheads community first. Favorite songs: Ramshackle, Minus, The New Pollution

I like Beck a lot, and I have a really hard time pinning down what exactly it is that he’s doing here, because it’s bouncing around and settling between a bunch of different stuff. Definitely putting a pin in this one to come back to and connect influences up to, I would’ve figured it to have come out a solid 8 years after it did. After some time thinking about it, this came out only something like a year before Lonesome Crowded West, and the two albums are definitely sitting near each other in my mind

Meh. Has some cool samples, and was pretty wacky on a first listen. However, I wouldn't go back to this. On a second listen, I didn't enjoy it so much. Sounds 'cool' but lacks depth. Nonetheless, I appreciate the variety of samples used in the songs. Stops the listening experience from being too boring.
I love Beck. I don't always love what Beck produces, but I love that he always sounds like himself even when every track is so different and genre-distorting.

I've heard and read people say that Beck was a master of all styles, however, to say that this shows Beck as a 'Jack of all styles and master of none' is an insult to the term 'Jack'. I'm sure Beck has put out much better work as this is in no way a 'must listen'! Odelay has a couple of songs on it, whether they're good or not is entirely up for debate, I don't know what to call the rest of the album other that a varied collection of rather suspect and random sounds. I have heard much worse though.

This is...more "Beck" than I was expecting. I really loved the creativity and appreciated the sounds, but I don't know if I'd voluntarily put on more than about half of the songs here. There were lots of little details I absolutely adored, though. 3.5.

I just couldn’t stop thinking about the fictionalized version of Beck that toured with Bender in Futurama. I can appreciate the work, but a lot of it was too experimental for me. Lord Only Knows was pretty sweet, where it’s at is catchy.
I don't know if it was because my version was the deluxe version, or something else, but this was 2 hours of Beck and that's just too much Beck. "Where It's At" is a classic, but not really one I want to listen to very often. I enjoyed the Aphex Twin remix of Devil's Haircut.

I get it. For its time it is sonically unique. I prefer the singles. Pollution and where it’s at are the strongest tracks.
Weird overall. Definitely feels like a 2006 album rather than 1996, putting it well ahead of it's time in terms of sound. Overall, has some strengths, but doesn't really blow me away anywhere. Carries me through, but never really wows me.
Absolutely classic album of the nineties. Way ahead of his time, his sound influenced a lot of acts down the road.
Guy has amazing range. This is one of my favorite of his.
That distorted screaming at the end of Devil's Haircut isn't made in anger, and it's not felt in anger. It's an expression of the joy of expression itself, and it makes you want to smile and scream along too. It's the removal of the shackles of genre. Does anyone remember the "anything but rap or country" saying? Surely this album killed it. I'll take rock in my rap in my country in my samples in my hip hop if it makes me smile like this. If you start to wonder whether he's serious, the penultimate heartfelt Ramshackle is a highlight. Capped off by the fart of Computer Rock, as if to say, I'm serious, but not *that* serious.
An incredibly solid album, though personally a few rungs down the ladder when I want to listen to some Beck. Just great to have so many genres and styles mashed together and come out sounding so good. I need to be listening to the other 1001 albums, but I just want to listen more Beck now...
Interesting music across the album. Appreciate it more now than I did back in my teens. Fun samples and interesting voicings.

Okay, first of all, Nerd Confession: when I was a kid, I was crazy about dogs (birds, too, but not relevant for this moment) and I had tons of dog books and subscribed to the American Kennel Club's magazine, so as soon as I saw the album cover, I shouted out "I remember that photo!" (Very unusual breed, the Komondor, and memorable photo.) Sure enough, it appeared in an issue of the AKC's magazine when I was 10, right in the middle of my dog-obsession years. I am also quite sure this same photo was in one of the dog books I got for Christmas that year or the next (and I'm also pretty sure it was this super-thick AKC encyclopedia of all dog breeds in their registry). Now, the album. I had heard a few of Beck's songs in the past and liked them well enough, so I was glad to give one of his albums a full listen, something I'd never done before. It's okay. I got a little bored at times, but I appreciate that he was trying to make something a bit different. He's definitely a very skilled musician and performer, and at times I like his writing and composition. I think just on the subjective personal taste front, this album is not quite my thing. Some good stuff on it, though.
I didnt realize how important the dust brothers were to music. I liked their hanna soundtrack but they also did odelay and beastie boys too. Very signature style.
Some great songs, others are a bit difficult to listen to. But, undoubtedly, a great work of art.
Some long albums drag (most rap albums). This one is almost like a radio station being flipped from channel to channel, held together by Beck's voice and his marriage of hip-hop beats and blues guitar. His best album still and doesn't drag a bit.

No one is creative in quite the same way as Beck Hansen. His music is incredibly adventurous while also being very deliberately crafted. It has a loose and diverse feel stylistically, floating effortlessly through sounds and genres like colors on a painter's palette. The songs are funky and groove-full, blippy and noisy, insouciant but playful, and gleefully strange. This is an incredibly engaging and fun album to listen to. Fave songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): The New Pollution, Where It's At, Devils Haircut, Ramshackle, High 5 (Rock the Catskills), Lord Only Knows, Sissyneck, Hotwax, Readymade, Minus, Derelict, Novacane, Computer Rock
was not bad. I would describe this as aggressive country music.
Boring, uninspired, at times stupid, Beck sounded uninterested throughout the entire album. Add onto that the occasional loud screaming and screechy instrumentals, and it all makes for an unpleasant listen. I don't hate Beck's other works, but I absolutely hated this album, and while I can normally understand why an album I didn't like received critical acclaim, I can't with this album.
The essential follow-up to Paul's Boutique (granted it was made with The Dust Brothers), Odelay showcases Beck's ascension from post-grunge slacker idealism to something far more eclectic and less predictable. Without this album, it becomes somewhat strange to envision a music atmosphere where indie rock musicians wouldn't pivot to two turntables and a microphone and remain complacent with their guitars and drums. We'd be doing sad hot dog dances in Houston at the thought of it. Good thing we don't have to. Favorites: Devils Haircut, Lord Only Knows, The New Pollution, Novacane, Jack-Ass, Where It's At, Minus, Sissyneck, High 5 (Rock the Catskills).

Well, there's a little bit of everything here. Funk, country, rock and whilst I enjoyed it, it didn't really gel as an album and I know he can do better.
Beck you big beautiful weirdo. Musically and tonally quite varied, this sets out the palate for much of his later work, albeit perhaps with less focus on any one particular style that occurs in subsequent records. It's a really enjoyable listen that never quite settles, keeping it continually interesting.
My first encounter with Beck was finding the free track that came with windows media player sometime in the early 00's. I think my experience of his music has forever been tainted by that. I thought this album was ok, I can appreciate the multi instrument use, inventive sampling and production but I just couldn't get into it. I struggled with the second listen. Sometimes you come across a good artist that just doesn't work for you.

Alternative rock, 1996. Despite the fact this record was released in the 90s it still sounds really fresh and actually good. Since the first tracks it's clear that in this album Beck is very inspired and the tracklist is really well balanced between the different moods of the songs. Maybe this is not a masterpiece, but it's definitely a cult.

Not absolutely bad, but it was quite long and boring. It just didn't get to me, what can I say.

Everybody's gonna throw rocks at me, but... I never got into Beck's music. All the songs seem to me a collage of somewhat haphazard ideas. There's a lot of work and pretty innovative stuff, but unfortunately it never becomes memorable or catchy (at least for me). It was like 52 minutes of "oh yeah, we're gonna put a tambourine there, oh and a robot voice here... And a sampling of that song at this moment", but it remains irrelevant at each time. Sorry. :(

Never a massive Beck fan, but it was a fun listen. Radio hits are the notable tracks, but also have heard too many times in my life. Also enjoyed "Novocaine" and and "High 5". This whole album is like Silver Jews meets Beastie Boys meets Eels meets electronica soundscapes – interesting but I'd rather listen to this stuff individually. Also like when Beck screams through distortion.

An awesome blend of contrasting elements. Commonly featured are hip-hop beats, country licks and electric noise. Even classical music appears for a moment, only to be replaced by a wholly different potpourri of sounds. Also, great-sounding drums

I had this album back in the 90s but I probably traded it in pretty quickly. Definitely one sound of the 90s.
Pretty fun listen! In hindsight I get why I couldn't get into this album when I first tried back in my teens. Can really appreciate what Beck's doing here that was so groundbreaking and fresh for the mid-90's.

4.1 - this was one of the first albums I ever purchased and has a strong bit of nostalgia for me. Still holds up today - “Where it’s At”, “Novacane” and “Readymade” are all top notch.

Boy I've not heard this in ages and it's great to hear it again. If anything it's better- a post-modern eclectic mixture that rolls on never staying in one place. I can understand it doesn't appeal to all tastes but it appeals to mine. Kinda grungey and laid back folky with samples and splurges and hooks that disappear off.
Beck is a puzzling artist whose musical genre mix ups should satisfy (especially with The Dust Brothers onboard - the beats are fresh) but the cut and paste approach combined with Beck’s elliptical lyrics renders the whole project a little flat. There’s no meat on the bones, nothing to grab hold of - no tap along, no sing along, no dance along. It’s a bit of a mess. I’m sure it makes sense to Beck.
an interesting listen! some good, ear-catching lyrics. beck bounced around genres here. i found it a creative album, but i think it lacked some cohesiveness. it wasn't bad, and i did groove to it! but it was just okay for my tastes.
I like some Beck, but despite listening to this album twice, I just couldn't get into it. Honestly, I was just kind of bored. Not sure what happened here, but this album just didn't do it for me.
A somewhat strange album in the sense that I don't get the hype. A couple tracks are pretty good but a lot of them are just nonsense. Album felt scatterbrained even though I normally like eclectic albums.

It's not often a musician comes along and writes fundamentally new music that is still "listenable". The really great thing is Beck has done it more than once. There are lots of guys like Glass and Reich who break the boundaries, but their music isn't "listenable". It's studiable, if that's a word. I would literally use Reich to clear a restaurant of stragglers after closing.

I've had this album for 20 plus years but haven't played it for a decade at least. Its still pretty magical. The genre hopping that annoys some people works well for me. Hes equally good at fast and slow songs. An unpredictable joy. 4

Guero is his album that I really got into. Didnt think I had heard Odelay the whole way through but I knew pretty much all of it. This has some really good tunes; Devils Haircut, Derelict and Where It’s At are my faves

I really like how the sound keeps changing. his voice is special. if you're not used to this sound, it's a weird album to listen to for the first time but it's so creative. I likes a lot some (most) of the songs, some others not so much.
Manic and experimental, wild and weird, there’s nothing quite like it. So many of these songs (and the entire album in general) feel haphazard and randomly stitched together and yet everything clicks. Every sudden genre switch, every vocal effect and every sound effect feels like it’s right where it’s supposed to be. I’d love to learn more about the editing and mixing of this album. It’s perfectly paced and sequenced. Beck knows when to push it and when to reward the listener. The easy, country vibe of “Jack-Ass,” for example, feels like a cool breeze after the chaos that comes before it. Fun, playful and insanely entertaining.
Holy crap what genre even IS this?! Obviously we are heavily rooted in alt rock here, but he really loves to experiment with sound bytes and styles in a very tasteful way. I love the ebb and flow of pure chaotic screaming to a smooth country tune, to 90's rap and DJ scratches, to an Arabian desert, to electronic beeps and boops!?! I really love this and he deserves all of the recognition he has received.
This album is a great one to show when showing people Beck. It's a solid representation of him: strong songwriting mixed with outstanding production techniques. Beck is such a stalwart, and I always appreciated his music and the way that he was a gateway musician to a lot of other genres. I think it's easy for a young kid to listen to this album and then get into slightly more abstract sounding indie rock for example, and I love that.

i give it 4 surprisingly! i usually dont like 90s music but this worked.
Looks like I gave the other 2 albums 5 stars so while I was thinking 4 I might have to bump it up and just call myself a fan. The singles are great and I'm sure I'd discover a few more faves with more time.
The first half is sort of hard to listen to but I really like the second half. I could see this growing on me though. Beck is definitely artistic and I would be willing to listen more.
Eh. I have never been a big fan of Beck. I didn't hate the music. I just didn't care for it. The sound, the lyrics and just the overall presentation is unmemorable. It is better than a 2. Not really a 3. I will round down.

This shit is weird, but not like in a fun way. It’s more in a concerning “are you okay?” way. It’s got some captivating rhythms, but some songs definitely gave me the creeps when I listened through the album. Something just sorta felt off throughout it. Overall, it was not an enjoyable experience.
A pretty classicly 'strange' 90s album. Beck has always been great at pushing the boundaries of contemporary music, and Odelay is nothing if not a great example of this. While some of the music does not speak to me, a lot of the album is wonderfully creative and showcases Beck's ability to create popular music without succumbing to the norms of the scene. Not only does this album push a lot of boundaries, it is incredibly varied. The songs range from eclectic, short bangers to longer, cozier suites. Although I am not rating this a five, I believe this is an excellent album for this list, and deserves more praise than it probably is getting. Highlights: 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10.

Beck sure does write some songs and then sing/perform them, doesn't he? Very middle of the road, but never annoyed or insulted me.
What a weird album. I mean, it's a Beck album so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I'll say one thing for this record: No two tracks sound the same. For that reason I can't say I'm in love with the whole album, but I also can't say I hate it, either. A few tracks were forgettable (but not BAD), most were decent, and a couple of them were definitely fun and worth revisiting. Overall, a solid 3 stars. Fave tracks: "Derelict" and "Computer Rock"

A bunch of styles in the same album and I'm not sure if it should be the main feature of this album. Mixing a lot of things in a consistent way is pretty hard...and this album is not so good at doing it. It's not absolutely bad and some songs are nice, but the lack of personality is the opposite of what I expected from Beck.
It was ok, but only being familiar with one Beck song before (Loser) this album wasn’t as good.
I don't think that this has aged particularly well.
Doesn't include the one Beck song I know so that's definitely a mark against. Interesting genre-blending but doesn't ever quite coalesce into anything really catchy or memorable in my experience.
"Devils Haircut" is a classic Alt Rock song that I feel like I heard a ton as a kid. "Where It's At" is very much so the same in that regard. It's a decent album. There just wasn't anything I loved about it.
