I kinda liked 'Loser' and the singles off this album but generally find Beck a bit insufferable and average. There's always been something a bit fake boho and smug about him. Always struggled to get how some people think he's the absolute best.

Like most hangs with stoners, it goes on a bit long.

I had much fun while listening to this album. Enjoyed the variety of genres and pleasant vocals. However, I can't remember a single melodic line from it. Possibly will come back to it in the future.

Kilka razy w trakcie odsłuchu miałem mieszane uczucia - z jednej strony eksperymenty muzyczne, których absolutnie bym się nie spodziewał w takim albumie, a które wywoływały głośne "wtf" i uśmiech. Z drugiej amerykańskie elementy folkowe, którymi jesteśmy w tym challengu zalewani i których po prostu mam dość. Nic w pamięć mi ponownie nie zapadło, chociaż płyta była przyjemna i zaskakująco długa. Ramshackle fajne, takie zupełnie inne od reszty utworów - wolniejsze, bez udziwnień, ale na bez rybiu i rak ryba - nie jest to nic nadzwyczajnego.

Każdy utwór w innym stylu, piosenki nie są złe, ale też nie zapadają specjalnie w pamięci. Mocne 3/5.

Sporo naprawdę niesamowicie ciekawych dźwięków, które bardzo mocno mnie wyciągały z czegokolwiek co robiłem w tym czasie i zmuszały do wyłącznego rozkoszowania się muzyką. Ogólnie bardzo dobry balans spokoju i normalnej muzyki z nagłym uderzeniem "dzwiekuw przeruznyh". "Hotwax" wywarło na mnie ogromne wrażenie, razem z kilkoma innymi jak "Novacane" i "Derelict", z resztą niewiele było naprawdę niememorable utworów. Moim zdaniem album, które absolutnie zasłużenie znajduje się w tym zestawieniu.

Bardzo ciekawy album. Reprezentuje taki przekrój gatunków, że widać, że jest to celowe - więc paradoksalnie tworzy się nowy koncept oparty na braku konceptu. Nic nie odstaje na plus czy na minus dla mnie, ale wszystko brzmi mocno unikalnie. Przyjemnie się tego słucha i zdecydowanie ma to miejsce w challenge'u. Niemniej jednak brak elementów wybitnych, a także fakt, że sam wokal, aranżacje itp. nie są dla mnie na 5, uważam, że normalna czwóreczka jest tu adekwatna.

Sweet album. So completely unpredictable makes it really fun to listen to, and even with the mix of genres and random noises popping into songs they are still super enjoyable. 7/10

you already KNOW i love me a 90s alternative rock album babyyyyy. Devil's haircut is nostalgic for me. Hotwax is great! the guitar riff in the beginning reminds me of a late 70s classic rock vibe. The vocals are kind of like spoken word. love it.

Enjoyed this one a lot.

Very very very different to what I was expecting, my only previous exposure to Beck was Mermaid Avenue so. Beck sounds a lot cooler than he looks , which is lucky cos he looks a bit of a twat. Such a wide range of influences and styles but all blended together so cohesively, on another couple listens it probably will be a 5/5 so fuck it.

It's a really strong beginning to the album for me! I love the first half, then I'm not so into Where it's at or Minus to be honest. Not a good vibe for me, I find parts a bit boring and other parts pretty stressful. I find other tunes really quite feel-good and they remind me of some of my favourite Beak> tunes but maybe I'd get more out of seeing it live because I'm not getting much feeling from it...

This was funky and fun and had some bangers. A totally varied album as well. Much preferred to previous Beck

Good but never great

I did not enjoy this album at all. It was a bit too electronic for my taste. The hip-hop inspiration felt a bit too messy so I couldn't really find anything to enjoy besides the last song.

So many hits. Lyrics are loony. Production is groundbreaking. At one time this was my favorite record. It's still fun for nostalgia but a little dated.

Unoffensive, but pretty bland

Beck's 5th studio album was in my opinion his best. It encompasses many styles of music and is a joy to listen to. Easily one of my top 20 albums of the 1990's.It’s chaotic, eclectic, inspired, and occasionally lucid and beautiful.Rap, grunge, blues,folk and country, garage, rock, electro, exotica, old-and pinches of noise rock are the ingredients that make this album into one beautiful big mix of magic.

This album showed the public that "Loser" wasn't going to be the last they heard from Beck. Showing the same inventiveness as his earlier albums, Beck also manages to create a cohesive album experience and experiment with some of his other notable musical stylings such as the harmonica and screeching distortions.

I had picked up this album a while back, and at the time I did not really care for it. Think I sold it back. It's interesting how my taste has evolved, because listening to it now I am really enjoying it. Maybe it's the wide range of songs, or my larger appreciation of Beck in general, but it's just got something to it. Call it a swagger, call it what you will. It reminds me a lot of Beastie Boys' "Ill Communication," but in a good way. The big hit songs are great, but the other tracks stand by themselves, too. Really surprising to me.

Solid. Beck has always had good songs but I wasn't sure whether he had good albums from front to back. This one was pretty good. I feel like Kid Rock stole his country rock meets rap alternative approach from this album. Kudos Beck, for shame Kid Rock. The hits are well-known and well-respected (Devils Haircut, New Pollution, Where It's At) but I also thought Hotwax, Minus, High 5, and Ramshackle were particularly good lesser knowns. Overall, the album is full of songs with strange but interesting lyrics and wordplay (like most of his work), unique beats and mixes (including cool guitarwork and basslines), and plenty to keep you guessing about what it's all about. Like I said, solid.

I actually liked this one because of the creativity. I didn't lose interest at any point. But I don't think it was worth a 4, although I considered it, because I probably wouldn't seek it out again. I'm rating based on how drawn I am to it and in that case it is a 3. Not bad, but not my thing either. There were moments that I liked but overall I wasn't super into it.

Didn't like the last 2 tracks and considered giving this a 3 star but the rest of it is brilliant.

Good album

It gets choppier and choppier as the album progresses, but the songs get better as well. Still don't get the hype for Beck though; some songs sound like what I used to do on GarageBand on my mom's iPhone.

What a loser.

Two Beck albums on consecutive days, what could be better? This album was one that I loved when I was younger, and it really holds up. The Dust Brothers were the perfect pairing for Beck. Everything on this album just works. There's not a single song that I don't enjoy or that doesn't fit 5/5

It's a Beck album, and as such contains a wide sonic palette. In Odelay's case, there seem to be two, both worth listening two, but not quite knitted together. I found the punk/hip-hop/hint of classical bits to be quite compelling. The indie-country minutes were more expected and perfunctory.

Best Song: Where It's At. Succeeds (partly) in instilling the chill vibe that I think the rest of the album is striving towards. Worst Song: High 5 (Rock the Catskills). Unironically sounds like a Kid Rock song. Overall: Slow and monotonous droning that absolutely is not for me.

While a clearly innovative and talented musician, the general sound of the album is not enjoyable and comes off quite irritating at points due to the dramatic changes of samples and sounds.

This truly was a huge disappointment for me. A Grammy winning album that is jumping from genre to genre with each song, each time in a worse manner while sounding awfully a lot like Kid Rock

so I listened to his first two albums to get ready for this (his third one) first album was Mellow Gold, punk meets indie, like a pre-Hobo Johnson 10/10 second album took a SHARP turn into blues territory, pretty good 7/10 now this third album goes back to the style of the first one for the most part, I’ll give it a 9/10, really good

It was fine. A few hits that I remembered from the past and radio replay surrounded by songs that I didn't remember / never heard. A few songs I'd hear again. But the whole album was too diverse for me to listen to the whole thing again. Devil's Haircut was a good starter.

Such a great, diverse, funky record. One of my faves from my fave Scientologist.

Listening to this album is like having a crash course in all the alternative music genres of the mid 90’s

A really good album post punk can be very divisive but this is just good music played well it doesnt soften too much that it loses its roots

I hate finding something like this that I should have gotten 25 years ago. I really love it. "Devil's Haircut" and "Where It's At" played pleasantly in my background in the 90s, and I suspected that I might like Beck, but I never pursued his music as I ought to have. I love this whole thing lots. Its trip through genres is a trip I loved. Although I would like to share my affection for each track, I will just share my favorite pants-related lyrics from three different songs: "In the chain-smoke Kansas flashdance ass pants" "Going back to Houston/To get me some pants" "Okay, now do like designer jeans [...] ooh, la la Sasoon"

I am familiar with Beck and this album has been living in my library since it was new in the 90s. I am a fan! I enjoy the mixing, sampling, and the variety of musical style performed by this artist.

I capital L-O-V-E about half the tracks on this album. The loud, fuzzy downbeat of Devil's Haircut is a tremendous start for an album and the rest of the song is great --- gotta love a song with the word "leprous" in it. I also love the lyrically absurd Hotwax ("in the chain-smoke Kansas flashdance ass pants") and its extensive instrumentation --- there's some jazzy Charlie Brown piano in the background for just a few seconds near the ass pants line and some steel guitar that are both just delightful. Jack-Ass and Ramshackle are mellow, almost plaintive, and lovely. My other faves include The New Pollution (of course) and Where It's At (of course of course) and also the country-tinged Sissyneck. Beck's varied instruments and styles, clever sampling, and singable tunes make me a fan.

Although I had owned Beck's Mellow Gold, for some reason I didn't listen to Odelay back in the day although I was familiar with the big hits ("Devil's Haircut," "The New Pollution," and "Where It's At"). Beck uses distortion, samples and effects quite a bit on Odelay. This was front-of-mind after struggling to cope with The Jesus and Mary Chain's heavy use of distortion. I never struggled with Beck - I enjoyed the gritty distorted parts, the donkeys braying, distortion on the instruments and vocals, the record scratches and the other unique sonic touches scattered throughout. They worked well here and mostly enhanced the listening experience. I love the laid-back nature of Odelay. Lots of eclectic styles to discover: the exotic sounds of "Derelict," the driving "Devil's Haircut," the down-homey "Hotwax," the harder edged "Novacane," the dreamy "Jack-Ass," the punk-like "Minus," the twangy "Sissyneck," the out-there-sample-laden "High 5 (Rock The Catskills)," the quiet "Ramshackle." All the songs feel really unique, interesting and still coherent together as an album. Beck's music is really unique and at times weird and wild while still managing to be cool, unassuming and surprisingly approachable. It didn't immediately demand a 5 from me, but I'm happy to give it a 5 'cause I got nothing but praise for it. Odelay is doing its own thing and doing it really, really well.

One of my favourite albums ever

**11/30/2021** Today's Album: "Odelay" by Beck- Devils Haircut is a great opener to this album. This beat is so upbeat and fun and I like how it breaks down a little bit right before 2 minutes. The amount of sounds being thrown at me is really refreshing and the production on all of it sounds so so good. Hotwax is such a smooth song and it reminds me of no rest of the wicked. The way his lo-fi beats are mixed with that southern instrumentation is so masterful. Holy shit the instrumentals in between verses gets wild. I really like those weird abrasive noises. Wow this is some interesting shit this sounds so weird. It works unusually well. The ending is so weird ahh what is happening? Lord Only Knows is also a great track. So far I'm getting the impression that he mixes classic country sounds with these new digital sounds and effects. I like it so far, but I feel like I have to be in the mood for these kinds of sounds. Ooh the guitar feature at 1:35 was super cool I like that. The New Pollution is a fantastic track and I believe I have heard it before. The steady rolling beat and chill vocals with all of the effects is just so cool. This style of song works way better with those glitchy effects than the other previous songs. That saxophone is just the cherry on top as well. Derelict is a very strange and eclectic song. I sort of just don't like how obtuse it is. The stuttering beat and dark tones just don't really hit to me and although I like some of the droning synths, it just isn't keeping my interest. Novacane is a more laid back song, with very strange effects launching us into this harsh rock beat. I really like the ambience of this song, but I don't know how crazy I am about Beck's rapping here. I think the style is all there, but I just can't really get into his voice. This album definitely enters noise-rock territory and I enjoy how it's done. This song is actually winning me over slowly as he keeps going. I like the building noisy effects and the frequent drop offs. His shouting of NOVACANE is reminiscent of Oxygen by Swans to me and the swelling bass just absolutely fucks my ears in a good way. The glitchy effects that transition to the end of this track are fairly abrasive. I'm not sure if it is really my thing. This is like that ear fucking I was talking about a second ago but now its rape. Jack-Ass starts off as this really pretty track and I really like Beck's vocals here. It's a definite mood switch from Novacane, but I really like how it brings this album down a notch. I really like the bouncy guitar effect too. This kind of reminds me of a Wilco song if Wilco was more straightforward. I actually really like this track as it goes on. The sitar and harmonica really welcome me in before everything is cut off again with these donkey sounds. Ooh those vinyl cracks are cool. Where It's At already sounds very familiar. I still don't know if I completely like Becks rapping, but it is growing on me and this beat is so smooth it's pretty hard not to love. I actually think I don't really fuck with the chorus on this one. I like that soft brass and the spoken word sample, but yeah I don't really like the, "WHERE ITS AT" vocal. Goddamn, though it's hard to hate anything about this when that bass, guitar, and piano are staying so smooth and sound so good. The horn freakout at the end is pretty sick and I like the effect on it. Minus is a cool track but I really am having a hard time keeping my attention. It just sounds kind of obnoxious in all honesty. Sissyneck on the other hand, is really fun with this whistling in the background and bass absolutely rocking it. I like the country guitar embellishments and the vocals aren't too bad. It's a decent song but there isn't too much to say about it in my opinion. Readymade is yet another droning track that comes and goes. I don't like how these past few tracks lack personality like the first few. They just sort of come and go. They sound okay, but they don't leave much impact. High 5 is just kind of weird. I don't really know if I like it or not. It's just sort of experimental for being experimental sake. His vocals are way to distorted to get anything out of it. kind of a mid track like the last few. Ramshackle is actually bringing things back a bit in terms of quality. I like how it takes its time and I actually really like his soft folky vocals in this track. Unlike most of the album, he's not going overboard with this track and it sounds so much better. He sounds best when he strips things back. The acoustic guitar definitely starts to go off, but it doesn't go overboard and there aren't a ton of other effects overshadowing the nice melody. I really like this track and I think it gives a good energy going into the end of the album and actually could have ended the album itself. The last track, Computer Rock, takes that pretty ending and shits all over it. It ends in the most abrasive and unflattering way possible. Literally ruined the last song by just how stupid this closer is. Overall, I really like some of the ideas presented in this album and the first half starts off so strong, but by track 9, its obvious that Beck was working off of half baked ideas and any good song that he would construct, he would just weight down with these over the top effects and abrasive noises. There are definitely some highlights here, but it really isn't worth sitting all the way through. I will add the songs I like to my playlist and dump the rest. Score: 5.5/10 half fantastic, half awful. Highlights: Devil's Haircut, New Pollution, Jack-Ass, Where It's At, Ramshackle

I remember downloading this album a long time ago and checking it out. I deleted it from my computer shortly after. Regardless, I decided to go into this with a fresh outlook. Who knows, maybe I'd like it more now. Well, that turned out to be exactly true. This is much better than I remember it being. There are some hit or miss areas, but I admire the diversity of sounds and meshing of genres. Despite that, it still maintains a cohesive sound. This is definitely a record that will grow on me over time., as proven already.

hidden gem of an album!

Beck has such a distinct sound and I do enjoy it. This album took you on a psychedelic ride at times. But it also had rock mixed in. It felt like an experimental album. Decent listen overall

Did not enjoy this album at all, aside from the singles which are so so every song was mediocre with annoying rapping and drum beats. Lots of annoying effects which I guess were a thing at the time. Some of the guitar and bass was pretty good.

It's fucking weird right? I don't have a lot experience with Beck at all. I know loser, which is a fucking bop and a half. However, with this album, I got nothing. It's weird. The samples are out there, Novacanes ending with the weird spaceship-hip-hop beat. Beck is rapping over this right? As weird as it is, it is equally as fun. Just plain old fun man.

Quelques bonnes chansons, mais beaucoup plus qui étaient plates ou énervantes. C'est le genre de rock alternatif avec lequel j'ai déjà de la misère et cet album le prouve. J'ai eu exactement ce que je m'attendais d'un album de Beck.

When I first heard Beck, I thought this acoustic guitar-playing skinny white "loser" wouldn't amount to much. He had a hit and I didn't care for his music at the time. Boy, was I wrong! He has created an incredible catalog of critically acclaimed albums, it's music in a wide range of genres and his influence on popular music can't be denied. He has released some flat-out great records and Odelay might be his best! I reserve my judgement until I listen to all his albums.

Love it.

This was a favorite of mine in high school and still holds up well. If anything I appreciate it more now. He is a master of seamlessly integrating disparate noises, sounds, screams, etc into songs in a way that feels effortless, and somehow correct.

I loved this period in the 90s when the floodgates were temporarily opened to allow for truly unique and idiosyncratic music to make it's way into the mainstream. Record labels were taking chances again, trying to find the next unpredictability big thing in the wake of Nirvana's success and the creation of the "Alternative" classification. Is Alternative still a thing or has that simply evolved into Indie? Had Beck come up in any other time period I think he would have remained a fascinating sort of semi-outsider artist that was beloved in hip circles, but because he came up when he did, he was able to really let his musical ideas run wild and we're all the better for it. As a lad, I really identified with Beck's whole approach. His melding of genres, his surreal lyrics laced with humor, his thrift store hodgepodge aesthetic, his back catalog of smaller indie records that revealed his true range and depth, and then of course records like this one that showed he was capable of practically creating a genre of his own. In my opinion this record temporarily broadened the palette for pop music in the 90s and early 2000s; loosening genre barriers, interweaving samples more fluidly, allowing for more esoteric material, and essentially popularizing a sort of free wheeling collage aesthetic outside of a purely hip hop context. Though "Mellow Gold" is great and "Loser" was, and still remains, his biggest hit, I fear Beck would have remained a one hit wonder had he not met up with The Dust Brothers. They were able to give his musical vision the scale, flow, and shine it needed to cement his appeal with a mass audience. Together they made something that was not only unique and innovative and fresh, but something that was fun as hell. One of the first real big shows I ever went to was seeing him play on the "Odelay" tour with The Roots as the opener. Man, it was a good time. Almost as good a time as I had blasting this album on repeat from a boombox in the backseat of my friend's car during the summer of '96.

Some real nice bangers, but then it goes into some different genres so the album is a bit all over the place for me. Not into Beck's hip-hop stylings really, this album does feels very 90s in that regard.

This was very obviously a Beck album from the first song. He seems to skip from genre to genre in a care-free manner but he manages to keep a consistent theme through the album as well. Hotwax is country and High 5 is hip hop and other songs are blues. I see where he got his reputation as being able to master any musical genre. Fav songs: Devils Haircut, Hotwax, Ramshackle

Not really sure how to categorize this album other than, "I dig it". Just some really great tracks.

High points for creativity. There isn't much that sounds like this, and there's enough songs that deliver, that the album is entertaining (though Derelict is certainly a pass).

Started off quite nice but after most tracks were annoying.

Look, I think Beck is great. Devil's haircut? Put it on any day. That being said, he just goes too far out there on occasion. I'm pretty sure there was a whole part that was just microphone feedback in one of the songs? That's nobody's "thing", ok. Nobody enjoys hearing that. No one in the history of music has ever gone: "You know what this song needs? Some microphone feedback." Except Beck, apparently. For this, and the other annoying parts of the album, 3 stars.

This is the Beck I know from high school - a mix of live instruments and samples, digital and analog, with the slacker/stoner drawl tying it all together.

I know he's trying to do something by using 400 different genres but I'm not sure it works. There's just too much going on.

I put Beck in the rare air of Miles Davis, Prince, Trent Reznor, and a few others. Creative and talented on a different level.

I like it, will remember it. That is a sign i heaven, and I buy it if I find it to resonable prices ;)

On Odelay, Beck tries to mix a plethora of genres, which works half of the time. While some tracks clearly identify with alt-rock, others are filled with hip-hop and sampling. As is with most albums at first listen, I generally prefer the more accessible alt-rock songs with some creative detours, such as Devils Haircut with its killer guitar riff, New Pollution with some jazzy elements and the catchy folksy Sissyneck. I have lukewarm/negative feelings towards the mixing and distorted sounds on Hotwax, Novacane, the sleezy stoneresque Jack-Ass, the screamy guitars on Where It's At, the atrocious vocals on Minus, the sleep-inducing Ramshackle and the demonic screaming on Diskobox. It's a 2 for me.

Beck I need in small doses. This is a good album, a lot of solid sonic ideas floating around, but after one too many tracks it just becomes a mash. It’s just kind of what happens when “idea stew” is your approach to anything artistic rather than a definitive vision, and I really get that sense from Beck. Favourite track: “Jack-Ass”

This one has its moments. Nothing more than that though. Definitely not the classic I’ve been led to believe but then I never really dug Beck anyway? So 3 stars it is.

Beck ! Odelay - Reminds my of 'The Kinks' meets 'Beastie Boys' at times - Psychedelia sound reminiscent of The Beatles - Hotwax was an instant favourite 'Where It's At' I remember hearing this before, great song Ramshackle a definite favourite, very mellow great closing track

People say this album is ahead of its time and groundbreaking. I say its a pretentious mess of experimentation that doesn't work.

Odelay by Beck was the first album that was assigned to us, and a very interesting one indeed. When I was younger, I remember many car rides and many Sundays of chores where my dad would put on some Beck songs, so this was a nice welcome for our journey to come. I recognized a few of the songs on first listen, including the album opener "Devil's Haircut" and "Where it's At", the latter of which happened to be my personal favorite on the album. Relaxed, lofi instrumentals and lots of electric guitars and nice vocals to go along with it. A fair amount of high energy moments in the album are present as well. At times, however, I found the album to be, well, just not entertaining to listen to, such as on the tracks "Readymade" and "Ramshackle". In conclusion, the album gets a 5.8/10 (3 stars out of 5).

This is what would pop up in my mind when thinking of a way to describe alternative music. Catchy tunes, great use of samples, an excellent first impression of the artist.

Lol so I had no idea what to expect. I'm currently only at the first song but it is pretty good. Very 90s idk how to describe it. 2nd song a bit weird but still not bad.

I think this album got bad lows but good highs like ‘lord only knows’. the producing is really interesting at times and I really enjoy that tho I think a lot of the songs are kinda mediocre and the production is not always enough to keep me interested. The ideas on the album are interesting but could’ve been explored more and executed better. 6,5/10

Sounds fresh as hell in 2021. Beck is a legend. Three decades of genre mashing, artistic relevance, and mass appeal, and somehow it seems like he doesn't get his due. Maybe its the Scientology. This album has some real high points, some scattered filler, but the blues-breakbeat-spoken-verse-sung-chorus thing feels reeeal nice walking along the waterfront on a sunny spring day. I'll always be a Sea Change guy, and the most tuneful stuff on here (Ramshackle, Jack-Ass, New Pollution) connects the most. B+

The Thetans probably blessed him for this one. I remember listening to this at Brett Dullum’s house way back when. Beck is like the love hold of Hip Hop and Bob Dylan, multisyllabic, long winded flowing over dope breaks. I hear Dan the Automator of Dr. Octagon, Lovage fame, The Gorillas, The Avalanches, Fat Boy Slim; white boy break beat samples both expansive and diverse. I like a lot of his simpler 4 piece songs without samples. There are three more experimental songs on this album that I find nearly unlistenable. But the greatness overpowers some stinkers, and one of the stinkers has a great breakdown. Solid B+. 4 .

I wasn't expecting to like this one. Not sure why but perhaps it's because Beck was liked by too many people who I thought had bad taste in music. It wasn't that bad. I kinda liked the genre smorgasbord as he rolls from Hip Hip to Alt throwing in a good dose of synths, harps and various percussion. If I had to listen to too many Beck songs of the same genre I probably would have lost it. I worry that I subconsciously feel I should like Rap since it's been happening for over 40 years. I can't get into the real Rap but I'll accept the White Boy watered down rap so I can check the box. Anyway, I enjoyed this one.

Closer to a 3.5 than a 3...a few songs were just so irritating.

This felt like Beck’s big breakthrough album when it came out and he suddenly seemed to become pretty mainstream. I didn’t really mind it but I thought it was weaker than his previous stuff. I assumed he was on the wain (read diverging from my own tastes), but his next album, Mutations, went on to become one of my top ten albums of all time. Listening back, I still don’t absolutely love it, but it’s a decent album.

On the plus side, I like the fact that he’s experimenting with different genres (from country to hip-hop), often in the same song; the Dust Brothers production combined with the dozen or so instruments he plays makes for a lot of things happening beneath the surface; the arrangements on “Where It’s At” are especially sophisticated; his guitar playing is good in-your-face at times, but usually subtle and innovative; I like the cover with the high-jumping Hungarian sheep dog. On the minus side, is Beck’s voice, which is not a singing voice, not such a big deal since he’s borderline rapping most of the time; the rap-phrasing limits the overall sound and probably limits the song-writing too; some of the more popular tracks sound like novelty songs.

At the time it was hailed as a masterpiece. Not that great in my opinion, but still one of the best records of the ear and a milestone of first part of the 90s

“Odelay” by Beck (1996) Lyrics are poetically well articulated, if nonsensical. Playfully self abusive, hence not self loathing, he directs the emotional violence inward for comic effect. Also, he sporadically throws in a repellent image that is appropriately jarring. Mildly evocative. Musically, the album is a relentless struggle for new sound, occasionally hitting the mark. Vocally substandard. I can see from this album that Beck probably has his fans. Makes me glad to be old. 2/5

One of my favorite albums. Unique and weird and quirky and funny and funky. It was awesome then and it’s awesome now.

I loved Mellow Gold and was a bit non plussed with Odelay when it first came out, but I've warmed to it. It's still very very weird, and you gotta admire than weirdness being crammed into such a catchy pop sound. Fave track - "Minus", maybe? Though all the tracks released as singles are banging. Also really like "Ramshackle", as I like Beck in mellow mode...

Interesting to revisit, can see a lot of the directions that Beck would go later in his career hinted at here. Has a lot of highlights that I had remembered, but these were also contrasted by some abrasive elements I thought didn't age as well. The squelching and yelling through a megaphone that kept popping up were way more jarring than I remembered. This listen probably explains why I don't go back and listen to the full album as often as some of his others. (His other albums with the Dust Brothers like Midnite Vultures and Guero for example) That being said, "Where It's At" is still a classic

Fuck yeah what a freaky little album beautiful sax flutters throughout (especially Where It's At) excellent outros on Hotwax and Novacane (and a Daft Punk sample?), all the weird little dial tones, big cuica time in the bridge of High 5 (sick track overall).. heaps of cool little moments that culminate in an overall excellent listening experience.

Probably my favorite Beck album. It’s what he’s known for, genre-surfing. It’s got hip hop, acoustic, electronic, indie rock, all of it. If you are going to recommend a Beck album, it’s most likely this one. Favorite track: Devil’s Haircut Least favorite track: Computer Rock

I like the instrumentation a lot, there’s some really cool samples and beats (guessing from the Dust Brothers) and some odd but fun grooves. Some cool effects to go along with some eccentric lyrics. Like his deep voice and some of the country inspired tunes. Not as strong at the end. Still a really good album though

At first it felt like an eclectic mix of genres that I couldn't really connect with, until I got to "Lord Only Knows". That track feels like a mix of the Killers and the Fratellis and it was then that it dawned on me how influential this album must have been for popular musicians that followed in the next decade. By track 4 I was starting to understand what Beck was about, some tracks feel like they were inspired by Frank Zappa, to the point where I feel like 'Devil's Haircut' kind of betrays what Beck is truly like. A good album, but not entirely to my taste.

A few of my favorite Beck songs are on here. While I appreciate him bringing a huge variety of influences to the record (hip hop, noise, folk), it does take a minute to actually get to a point where I like it. Favorite tracks: "Sissyneck", "Derelict", "The New Pollution"
