This was an excellent debut album. What a wonderful voice. It's not in the same league as Back to Black.

This is an interesting debut album with it’s nod to jazz, its scat intro, flute and trumpet solos and Amy's Sarah Vaughan impression on “October Song”. Most of the tracks are presented within a R&B framework spiced up by some jazzy/reggae/downtempo bits. It’s a little smooth for me, but Amy’s voice does manage to break through the blandness, especially when accompanied by a well-written song that commands your attention like “In MY Bed”. Having had the opportunity to look into the future at the Back to Black LP I would say that B2B benefits from Mark Ronson’s organic, rootsy production not to mention better song-writing. This LP gives a hint of what’s to come.

She has an unique voice, I'll give her that and comparisons to Billie Holiday are inevitable and her talent is undeniable. This is the first time I've ever actually listened to a full album by her, Lord knows I tried, but nothing on this album really grabbed my attention. As a debut album from a 19 year old this is commendable , but it is a bit one dimensional and still needs some fleshing out IMO. Her next album was better.

To my surprise I enjoyed this a lot more than Back to Black (which I quite enjoyed), which has such a strong reputation and I've always assumed is *the* polished work to look towards when it comes to Winehouse's discography. Rather, the classic jazz influence is more charming with less polish/production, the humor actually caught me off guard (I always found Rehab depressing and over-obvious), and is more emotionally acute if not as raw as BIB.

A decent album by wine house. It’s definitely not as good as back to black but this album is nicely done and is unique. It’s jazzy and fun but also dark and displays a side that most music doesn’t. Lyrically wine house doesn’t hold much back. The draw back to this album is it isn’t as refined. Overall it’s okay and a couple of songs are worth revisiting. 6.1/10

I appreciate Amy Winehouse, and sometimes I think about what could have been if she hadn't died. This album had a great sound. Her voice is tailor made for this kind of music and her backing band is great. Lyrics felt kind of try-hard..."look I've got a great voice and can sing old soul, but I'm going to make it edgy by forcing F-bombs" I enjoyed it but it wasn't something I plan to go back to intentionally.

Pretty nice, Amy's voice is quite powerful as they said, and the music went hand in hand with her voice.

Pains me to rate Amy so low but this is not good. First couple songs were not bad but then this thing just drags. Production is repetitive and bland, songwriting is nothing to write home about. The only redeeming quality here is Amy’s voice, which is one of the best of the 21st century. Back to Black is WAY better.

To be frank, wank.

The album kinda just feels like they stuck Amy into the studio and had her record whatever came to mind. It has a bit of a live album, rough kinda feel to it. The songs that were produced sound good, and I generally like the sound of the album. However, there are times that the scatting took away from the song, as well as the rough feeling of the album. Favorite track: You Sent Me Flying/Cherry

This is my favorite album from this list in a long while. I will have to keep coming back to this album. Amy Winehouse bridges the gap from vocal jazz to neo-soul and trip-hop in such elegant ways throughout the album. Additionally, she has really beautiful lyrics. Highlights: All. Listen to this one front to back.

I don't really have anything of substance to say about Amy Winehouse. Never got her appeal, still don't. To me, this is a musician who is not noteworthy.

Sucks when you're really looking forward to an album and it falls flat. But it really sucks when you're looking forward to an album and you desperately need it to stop after the third song. The indiscriminate use of ups-and-downs, ins-and-outs of her voice (contralto?) drove me bonkers. I assume this was involuntary or she hadn't ever heard a recording of her work. Love AW's voice and singing in VERY SMALL DOSES. My max is really about 3 consecutive songs. I muscled through, but was ready to quit after track 3.

The album title, "Frank," allegedly is partially in tribute to Frank Sinatra, who was among Amy Winehouse's many anachronistic influences. But it could just as easily refer to her frank manner - unreserved, unedited, direct, candid, and open. The result of that frankness in her music was a breath of fresh air, taking so many classic soul, R&B, and jazz sounds and melding them with hip hop and something just uniquely Amy. I'm not sure I ever listened to "Frank" before, though I feel like I know the more popular follow-up "Back to Black" well. It is immediately evident what Simon Fuller saw in her, though nothing on "Frank" soars to the heights reached later by "Rehab" and "Back to Black." That said, there is still a lot to like on "Frank," including Winehouse's talents as a songwriter in addition to her notable pipes. It's a voice that quickly became iconic, but I can't help but be left thinking that she doesn't always use it to its potential. I love that in addition to her 1960s influences she also loves Nas (enough to sample him on "In My Bed" and write a whole song about him on "Back to Black"). I love that she pushed boundaries and recoiled at the idea of doing things by the numbers. I hate that such an open and candid person had to turn to alcohol and drugs to feel comfortable performing on stage. And I hate that her brilliance, like Cobain and Hendrix and Joplin and Morrison and so many others, left us too soon to find out where their journey would take them next.

This is jazz where the main featured instrument is Amy's voice. I love the unique texture of her voice but the style of these songs is not really my thing.

I didn’t love this like I thought I would. Generally really enjoy her voice but I couldn’t get into most of these songs. It’s really a two and a half.

I’m glad the 1001 experience brought me to this album. I never would have listened to it, nor learned about Amy otherwise. Her voice is quite excellent. It has a depth. I also like her song genres: soul, jazz, R&B. Intro / Stronger Than Me and Amy Amy Amy are the highlights for me. The rest of the songs are solid, and have moments that reach these heights, but not enough of them. I would like to listen to her later albums to hear if her writing matured to a more consistently elevated level.

Never listened to an Amy Winehouse album all the way through before. Respect it and can see what a talent she was. That being said, not hugely my cup of tea so it sits at a high 3. Can feel the fume.

A very good album. I never listened to Amy Winehouse at all until after she passed away. I heard Back to Black which I thought was boss and this is the first time I have listened to Frank. There really wasn’t anyone like her at the time at all and I do get the hype. Her voice is boss. Strong 3 for me and I would listen again. Some stand out songs on here for sure

I'm super familiar with (and love) Back to Black, but strangely enough I've never listened to this album. I guess it's not that unusual really. This album is great, not as much of a cohesive masterpiece like Back to Black, but still excellent nonetheless. Amy was a rare talent and such a shame that she died so young. 4 stars.

I started off really not into this. I still didn't save much, but the album definitely rebounded for me into and through the back half. Still not really my thing, but I came around to it a bit more than I thought I would have after the first few songs. Standouts: Cherry, In My Bed

It's hard not to be sad when one thinks of what Amy Winehouse could have been. Had she not been caught up in the whirlwind of the sleazy and seedy underbellies that bellies stardom and fame. Had she not been pigeonholed into a idealism that celebrated debauchery and decadence and a downward path towards death. Seeing this album cover, and the music contained within it, is a reminder of who she was and what she was; a disciple of the jazz and hip-hop woven tapestry that enabled her to express herself in ways that felt real, that felt unencumbered by media expectations and fuckery, that felt... well, frank. A stark example of not knowing what we had until it was gone and not knowing what to do with it when we had it. She was an incredible talent who should still be making music today, who should still be alive today.

Nice album but can definitely tell that it's a debut. Excellent vocals but no songs really jumped out at me as her later work did. 7/10.

What a voice and what a sound! A call back to Jazz lounge singers in the 30s and 40s. So soulful. I loved her documentary AMY. A talent gone far too soon, but a legacy amplified by an early demise. RIP.

Somehow, I have never heard even a one song from this album! My musical knowledge is not as good as I imagined... "Frank" is much more melancholic and slower than "Back to Black", with fewer hits, but otherwise a very high level album. The opening "Stronger Than Me" is by far my favourite song, high tempo, very entertaining, more fitting to later part of Amy's career. All the other songs are much slower, bossa nova style, which isn't my favourite type of music. Amy's vocal is amazing as always, never heard someone with similar voice. I would give it a higher rating, but honestly a lot of the songs were very forgettable. I prefer Back to Black.

I'm going to try to compliment sandwich this thing... Amy Winehouse obviously decided to do her own thing here and cut a new path through the forest. It's markedly different from just about anything else out at the time. And that's legitimately admirable. I can appreciate that. But dammit, find a bloody chorus once in a while. Maybe - and I know this sounds crazy - but MAYBE write a damn melody to a song or two. This wandering, unhinged vocalist schtick was lame back in the 70s. We don't need to bring that part back along with your fauxstalgic imitation doo-wop sound. Also, these lyrics are REALLY shallow when they're not downright childish. I know that's not the case in her later albums so at least she got better but, dang, these lyrics are awful. She sure does have a killer voice, though. And I do love the sheer guts and devil-may-care attitude she poured out all over this album. I think THAT, not the music, is what pushed her so strongly into the spotlight. And rightly so. The attitude of this album is legitimately compelling and the main reason this album earned the three stars I'm giving it.

Literally the best album so far

I was super excited to dig into this one, because I know her big radio hits and have loved her voice, but never really dug much deeper. Thoughts are this -- she had a fucking incredible voice, but boy can you hear the life dissatisfaction in her lyrics that presumably led to her substance abuse. I love the jazziness, but there are a lot of gender assumptions and gender role acceptance that doesn't work for me in almost 2023 as it probably would have twenty years earlier. Stand outs for me: You Sent Me Flying, Fuck Me Pumps (which is very musically repetitive and catty as hell, but I like it in spite of that), and (There is) No Greater Love. Also, the UK version of the album has a cover she did of Someone to Watch Over Me, which is STELLAR.

Amy has such a unique character to her voice and lyrics. An incredible album for a debut and her oeuvre only improves on the next one.

I dunno why I liked it, but I kinda did. There's quality to the performance but it felt like something was missing, like they hadn't hit their top gear yet.

She was obviously very talented, and it really shines through the mediocre song writing. Not really for me but I understand why someone would like this album.

Take as a given that Winehouse had a voice like no other - powerful sound, fragile frame and a personality which cast a spell. Read between the lines here and its a pretty bleak record, though, despite the upbeat soulful / jazz sound. She sings of toxic relationships and addiction cycles and to look back now one wishes we could have helped Amy get the support she needed. One fears a lot of enablers and exploiters in her life made matters much worse. I hope you're at rest now, Amy.

Here we go, embarking on this challenge! First up, Amy Winehouse's debut, Frank. I love Amy Winehouse, hadn't ever heard this album all the way through before so I'm glad I got to listen to it! I feel like I should 100% be rating this higher but it is what it is. I just feel it in my gut to give this 8.5. Amy Winehouse's debut album is very strong. I'm a huge lover of this type of music, and she takes a lot of inspiration from jazz conventions. A particular highlight for me is October Song, her requiem for her bird Ava, and how she quotes the melody of Lullaby of Birdland in the chorus. Are you fucking kidding me?? Amazing. Amy's a powerhouse. What Is It About Men is one of my favourite songs of hers, was great to hear it in the context of this album. Overall I feel like I like Back in Black a little better than this record but this is still extremely solid and really fucking good. Fav tracks: Cherry, Know You Now, I Heard Love is Blind, October Song, What Is It About Men

This is awesome.

This reminded me of Dame Cleo Lane, who was famous for her boop-de-boop-boops, vocal range and scatting. All very well and clever but when you have to hear an hour of it is dull, monotonous and seems interminable. There were moments of wit and levity. An interesting first album, but I can’t say I enjoyed it.

This album is more of a sign of things to come for Amy, as she wouldn’t hit her, unfortunately very short, peak until back to black. But I still love this album, it’s a raw look at the life of a 19 year old who doesn’t know much about the world other than her relationships with the men in her life. It’s honest (hence Frank), and that’s all it needs to be

Excellent album, unique, groovy lyrically raw and exciting, often incorrect in a way that appears honest or vulnerable. The music prefaces the new move to neo-soul but has some more guys behind it. The production is slightly dates now but wasn't it always? Her story is interesting and summons up a distinctive moment I history, and like with all real life tragic heroines highlights how the machinery of modern capitalism will commercialise your weaknesses until they eat you up. Still - very very good, if not wholly my bag.

Great album.

The sassiest and most satisfying sort of soul. An astonishing debut on multiple levels, the conifdent delivery and assuredness, her versatile singing style, from belting to vamping. The lyrics are great, too, with many funny bits ("Fuck Me Pumps," "I Heard Love Is Blind") and empowered feminist (and post-feminist) proclamations ("Stronger Than Me," "What Is It About Men"). A big-time talent strutting her stuff for the first time. One loves the overall vibe and feel of the record, too – the retro instrumentation and song selection, backed by modern beats and 'tudes – "Mr. Magic" is a great exemplar of how this respectfully and intelligently freshens up a classic genre. Excellent all the way around.

Not my favourite album of her, but it was worth it just for her beautiful voice. Amy had what was probably the best voice of the 21st century. It's so sad that she had to die so young, she had a lot of potential to have a decade spanning career. Don't take drugs kids...

The music doesn't match the vocal ability. This is a really special talent, with an amazing range of qualities, power, inflection, emotion, soul, the whole box of tricks - too big to be contained in these songs. She's great, the album isn't. It's like a poster advert: can I see the whole show please?

This is not my cup of tea, but a few things I enjoyed about this album: the cilled-out vibe. You can relax with this on in the background. There are some reallly cool textures to the music. Amy has amazing control over her voice and the emotion is raw and powerful. Unfortunely I cannot stand the articulation of the words themselves, and this is present in so much of pop singing that feels like it began in these early-2000s, but is still going strong today. Strong album overall, even if it's not my thing.

I was avoiding trying Amy Winehouse’s first album for years. TF for? I don’t mind it’s not Back to Black; it’s still great! There’s some gender keeping and homophobia in the first track that’s pretty cringy. Otherwise good stuff.

The album is soft and easy to listen to, making it a wonderful album overall, however it isn't entirely my style so I don't know if its good enough to continuously go back to and listen to. So warm, cozy, and soulful. Like a glass of wine in the solitary comfort of one's home. In short, it's Winehouse.

Listening to Amy Winehouse reinforces my belief - that you can train all you like to be a perfect singer, like all those XFactor contestants - but to have a voice recognisable world wide from the tiniest snippet - that’s something you are born with. And my was Amy Winehouse blessed with a voice. Anyway - enough about the obvious. The album is pretty good, not brilliant, but a good first album. My favourite song was ‘In my bed’ because of the awesome sample of Nas ‘Made you Look’, but there aren’t any major hits on here.

She has a great voice, and I do enjoy the songwriting style. I prefer Back to Black but this is still enjoyable

Was able to listen to this again without thinking about everything good and (very) bad that came after. It was clear that Amy was a real talent, and I was looking forward to much more from her. A good album, but not a great one.

Her talent is undeniable. The production on this album is not. I’m not sure what it was exactly, but it seemed like the album should have been better. Tighter, more lush…something. Mark Ronson would have known what to do. I enjoyed ‘F*** Me Pumps’.

I don't know how to best articulate what it is about Amy Winehouse that I do not connect with. No doubt, she's got a range and her own style, she's got a unique voice and ... I'm trying to come up with more. Point is, I just don't enjoy listening to her sing. I'm sure this isn't exactly fair, but it just never sounds genuine to me. It's like she's playing at being a sultry jazz-inflected siren, but I'm not buying it. I tried to listen objectively, and this is clearly early work of hers, so you can hear her thinking through the parts on many of these songs—she's got the talent, she's still working on the craft. With another artist, I might have enjoyed the juxtaposition of the studio and live cuts of the same material, but on this I was annoyed that we were hearing the same tracks again. So, yeah, I tried, but I'm just not an Amy Winehouse fan.

I don't really know her catalogue very well, so this was the first time I sat down and listened to her with any degree of focus. The first half of this album, her voice struck me as more affected than sincere. And I confess I found her style more grating than I was expecting. Plus, the songwriting wasn't really grabbing me. I started to enjoy things on Moody's Mood For Love, but they really clicked into place on In My Bed. The music and production matched her voice, but she also toned down her jazzy affectations. I enjoyed the second half of the album. Then I did a quick listen to the first few songs on Back to Black, which sounded great. Unfortunately, she only had the two albums. Anyway, a decent debut album, and I can see re-listening to Amy, Amy, Amy and In My Bed.

Let me preface by saying I listened to the "clean" version on Spotify. It was not intentional but once started I just let it go. It wasn't until later that I wondered if I might be missing an angle of Amy listening to the clean version. anyway... This listen was comparable to kd lang's Shadowland. Clearly Back to Black is the better Amy Winehouse album when compared to Frank. And just like kd, I think Amy was working hard to find her voice and sing in a way that inspired her love of music. While each song had a distinct Amy Winehouse sound and feel I could also hear experimentation in style and in some songs, felt I am literally hearing her try to find her voice. I like Amy's brand of R&B or Neo soul or whatever you call it. I love Amy's smooth grittiness (F*** Me Pumps). (There is) No Greater Love is the vibe I love to hear in the background of a dark bar enjoying a libation with any one of you. And...are those crickets I hear?! Hard to believe she only had two studio albums.

A beautiful voice that was quieted too soon. It's sad to listen to the emotion and biographical nature of this album and knowing how the story ends. Frank is a great album and would probably get a 5 from me in some alternate universe that Back In Black doesn't exist in. 4.5/5.

Not for me

Yes to *Back To Black* being included in the list, no to *Frank*. Its melodies are less striking, and its production--drawing from lounge jazz with a muzak flavor, not to mention relatively stale recycled 90s hip hop beats--hasn't aged well. Over that somewhat hackneyed instrumentation, Amy has nice bursts of energy, but unfortunately, such bursts sound a little off the mark sometimes--not that it was any fault of her own. Her voice deserved better music than that. *Back To Black* offered her that chance. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: less than 800, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens:  approximately a half so far  Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter (including this one)

So much Soul. Amy is so incredibly talented and this album hits in all the right places. Easy 5 stars

I didn't want to like this album, but I did. This girl had some pipes. I remember when it came out I thought she had an annoying personality and all the press about her was just about her struggles with addiction. So I never really listened to her music except for that one Rehab song that they played all the time on the radio. But, listening to her album Frank was really nice. Has a jazz club vibe, good times.

When I was in my early 20s, I lived in Camden, just around the corner from one Amy Winehouse. She was a notorious botherer of the Hawley Arms nearby, although I only actually saw her once or twice. However, several times I was awoken at 3 am as she stumbled past our house, a baying mob of paparazzi in tow. At the time I was pretty pissed off but looking back it's pretty tragic, given what became of her life and then untimely passing. Anyway this album; nocturnal disturbances notwithstanding I was never that keen on Amy Winehouse, although her voice is amazing. I had never heard this one before - only her other hits. So this was quite the ear-opener. Now I see why so many consider her legendary.

Amy Winehouse was so talented. It was impressive that she could sound so much like singers such as Billie Holiday, but it doesn’t sound like it was a gimmick or an impersonation. Probably my favorite album to come up on here so far.

Un discazo que para mí muestra lo que pueden hacer los productores que de otro modo hacen pop muy plástico, cuando se juntan con un talento más completo como el de Amy. Quizá me gusta aún más el otro disco, pero también ese tiene menos rolas propias y mucho más peso del productor (Mark Ronson). En cambio en Frank, todas las rolas tienen algo de su autoría.

Really listen-to-able

Very stylish and cool for background music. Great vibe, nice arrangements. Unfortunately the actual lyrics don't connect with me at all; we don't share any common ground and I pretty much don't agree with her point of view or the choices represented in these songs. Or maybe I'm just in a mood today. Lacking an emotional connection doesn't automatically mean I won't enjoy certain music, but in this case it did ruin it for me a little bit. Also several of the songs probably could have benefitted from a little more structure and, dare I say it, variety.

Liked the first song of the album

I like Amy’s sound but the lyrics are definitely dated oof. I skipped live renditions as well. Overall I like it, but again since the singing is quite slow and you can hear the lyrics I'm just slightly disappointed by those haha.

Immediately I notice that this album plays into masculinity of a man and how often the men Amy sings of do not fit into this dynamic that she expects. Which, she often then has to fill herself. It’s a bit uncomfortable to listen to as society has moved on from these tropes, but I do think the transcendndence of this phenomenon can be seemed to stem from men not fulfilling the role for her specifically. It gets into sex and sexuality in a way that is for self pleasure and is a satisfying listen. Cherry is probably my favorite song.

Amy is great. Everyone knows that. But this is her debut, and that says something. It’s her right out of the gate, her best foot forward, and it’s spectacular. Absolutely incredible. Forever in our hearts.

The first question that came to my mind was "would this album be here if it wasn't for Winehouse way too premature a departure?" Curious thoughts aside, there is no denying the qualities of Winehouse's voice. What I will deny, though, is her music: I just don't get along with what passes for pop these past couple of decades (nor am I in the contemporary R&B market).

Fun album. Love her voice and how she made jazz modern. Probably won’t listen again.

One of a kind voice. Beautiful blend of jazz and soul.

Amy Winehouse has a great voice, no doubt. Having heard her legendary followup, Back in Black, listening to Frank is an odd experience. It's a lot less focused, less polished, and less consistent. What old-school soul Winehouse wielded on Back in Black is simply not here. Instead, she opts for neo-soul that flirts with trip hop. These sounds, while well done, are simply not in Winehouse's wheelhouse. It occasionally feels like she is fighting over the instrumentals, losing her dominance that I know her better for. Everything about Frank feels like a solid first attempt. For an artist still finding her sound, I would not hold that against Winehouse. Good work otherwise.

Starts very jazzy. Song 1, stronger than me has an amazing guitar. Sent me flying was lackluster.

Music was okay and I don’t care for the tone of her voice.

I loved the jazzy feel and her vocal abilities. I closed my eyes and felt like I was in a jazz lounge. Anyone that knows me knows that I'm a sucker for brass instruments so that definitely didn't hurt.

Such a beautifully intimate record, and by that, I mean so real. It’s so real. I missed out on her for the most part, but this is telling me that I DID miss out.

After all the controversy and the headlines of this artist I never really paid attention to Amy Winehouse. Apparently this was a quote from her about this album... Some things on this album make me go to a little place that's fucking bitter. I've never heard the album from start to finish. I don't have it in my house. Well, the marketing was fucked, the promotion was terrible. Everything was a shambles. It's frustrating, because you work with so many idiots—but they're nice idiots. So you can't be like, "You're an idiot." They know that they're idiots". Not sure if she is right here, because if this was an album made by idiots, those idiots did a pretty damn good job.

Hmm, This album was named for Sinatra apparently and it shows with smoky bar piano tunes which I'm sure are cool and trendy for those who base their personality on the music they listen to. but a bit boring. I do like her voice and style of singing. this album too Jazzy though

I listened to this in high school, and I remember liking it. Amy is witty and hilarious as well as sophisticated and romantic. “Stronger Than Me” is a great intro and feels both of it’s time and something that would be popular today. “Cherry” is the only song I remember and seriously love. Amy Winehouse was a really special and unique pop star — blending 90’s R&B, Blossom Dearie jazz vibes, and Jeff Buckley-esque song lyrics. I’m actually not a huge Amy fan, but I totally understand her appeal and her talent. “Amy Amy Amy” is another fun song that I remember — the whimsical synth-tuba bass line sets itself apart from the rest of the record. So, all this being said, this album is a 3 for me. I like the occasional song, I respect Amy’s style, but I think that she eventually perfected her craft in future records. As a debut, this record revealed an up-and-comer with true potential, and debuts aren’t meant to be perfect anyway. Yes, a solid 3.

One of those albums that seemed fashionable to add to this list at the time and it gave them free space to remove when anything even measurably good appeared on the horizon later on. In short, this album was added just to protect having to remove some terrible 1960s album that will always be on this list because its old and you can't change my mind.

Amy Winehouse's debut album showcases her explosive voice within a jazz/R&B framework. The lyrical content is bleak, but the music itself is well produced and arranged, and Amy's voice of course, can do anything. Her voice is not as controlled as it is on 'Back to Black,' but is still incredibly powerful. My biggest complaint is that she makes some vocal choices that detract from the song. She over-pronounces certain syllables to sound a certain way, but it doesn't always fit. However, that is a small complaint when faced with her incredible talent.

This is a tough one. I love Back To Black, the vibe, the arrangements, the lyrics, the singing. It all just works. But this album? No no no. Loose jazzy jams with barely melodic nasal The-Nanny-style vocal complaining via Amy. Just no. Shows a teeny weeny bit of promise, but no.

This was a revealing listen and not in a good way. When the songs aren't just outright mean (Stronger Than Me and Fuck Me Pumps) there's a constant, uncomfortable undercurrent of self-destructive egocentrism. Levels of self-awareness swing wildly - sometimes you get the impression that Winehouse knew exactly what she was and was riffing on it deliberately...but often the vibe is less self-reflective and more self-satisfied. Perhaps to be expected from a nineteen year-old with a major recording contract, but still. The tunes are smooth, the vocals are brilliant, the songs taken as a whole tend to have a really good groove to them. But the bitterness in the lyrics seeps through and makes the whole thing unpleasant.

This is the debut album from English singer, songwriter Amy Winehouse. It was received well by critics and has been certified triple platinum in the UK. The album title can be a reference to Winehouse's singing on this album which is open, honest, and to the point. Or it could be referencing Frank Sinatra - which was an early influence for Amy Winehouse, and her vocal style even sounds similar to his style. This soulful, R&B, and bossa nova jam fest of an album makes for a relaxing and romantic atmosphere. Amy Winehouse was extremely talented and it's a shame she was taken too soon. I'm glad I finally got a chance to listen to her debut album, and I'm looking forward to listening to more songs from her that I may have missed.

There's no doubt Winehouse has vocal prowess, but damn if she doesn't make it hard to appreciate it when she insists on doing vocal runs in /every/ /single/ /phrase/. I never once felt enmeshed in the tracks (which have serviceable at best instrumentals that feel a bit GarageBand-esque) because of the constant vocal acrobatics, as Amy never once allows a verse to be a verse so the listener can settle in and appreciate the track.

I was aware of Amy Winehouse, but never really listened to any of her music. The album had a very jazzy feel to it and sounded like it would have been performed in a quiet lounge late at night. There were elements of R&B and hip hop throughout and Amy's voice was very captivating. She had an interesting vocal register, being a bit lower than a lot of other female vocalists and having almost smoky quality. This isn't the kind of album I would have sought out on my own, but I did enjoy listening to it.

A very jazzy album from a talented voice and songwriter. Some great music on this album but my main issue is the Alicia Keys-like drumcomputer in some songs like You Sent Me Flying. Lots of songs could have shone a lot more with a better production. But I know that happened on the next album!

as much as Mark Ronson does my fucking head in for being an egotistical prick, he did do a hell of a lot to turn wino from some directionless generic R'n'B singer into the behemoth she became with a pretty strong identity. this album is has a couple of standout tunes but the majority is so forgettable that i am choosing to do just that.

Daydreaming about skull fucking Amy Winehouse is one of the best things you can do with your weekend. In many way it's easier now she's dead. I imagine her singing whilst I cum in her. She sounds heavenly.

Her Back to Black album seems to get all the attention, and in fact I don't think I had listened to this one - but damn it cooks!

I like "Back to Black" far more. My favorite of the lot here was the more laid back hidden track "Brother."

Amy Winehouse is good at what she does, but it never has ever clicked with me. I think her other album is also a bit better.

Super talented artist. Most of the songs were pretty forgettable though. Still her ability really shines through.

This album is peak Amy for me. She has some fun with the inevitable Erykah Badu comparisons, but this is a bright new talent, rather than the significantly retro retooled Mark Ronson stuff. I can barely listen to Back to Black due to its ubiquity and idolatry but this? Forever.

Very Billie Holiday in vocal style. Very laid back jazz. Not quite the poptastic songs of the next album, but gently groovy. Back when Amy had no obvious tattoos, looked healthy, attractive and probably wasn’t aware of her influential status. Refreshing.

I first heard Frank in a wine shop. Which makes me sad. Not the booze and stuff, but because I was trying to become domesticated at the time (I failed), and for a while this became semiotic cue for all the things I foolishly wanted to be at the age of 30 whatever. I guess it was actively disliking Back to Black (I've gone back somewhat on this over the years) that nudged me into listening to this a little more carefully. Winehouse's voice here was subtle, delicate, abrasive, plaintive, brash...I wonder what a different set of producers might have made of her?

And what she wants is perversely oversexed, as if she thinks she’s discovered the right tool to fix what’s broken inside. It’s embarrassing. Lyrics are characterized by demanding, controlling, manipulating, objectifying, wallowing in splenetic superficiality, reducing the man to a mere instrumental cause for her deluded sense of happiness, slutsplaining her way through a closed labyrinth of contradictions and non-sequiturs. As a songwriter, she comes across like a tiny princess who does her ego shopping at the Big & Tall Men’s store. All this is really too bad, because the musical arrangements are excellent, and she has an appealing, good-but-not-great voice. If you’re 1,000 albums into the list of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and this is the only one remaining, you could just as well go ahead and die. 1/5

Thought she was really bad when she first started but think she has some real talent and some cool songs now. Close to a 4.

I was excited for this but was let down. I think she had an incredible voice but the lounge singer vibe on this album didn't work for me. Nothing stood out.

The idea of Amy Whitehouse - a noughties update on the torch singer mixing jazz and soul is great, and her voice is amazing here too, but the songs don't quite nail it. Next one would.

I'm at odds with this record. Amy manages to blend a classic, 50s/60s girl group style vocal with blunt, vulgar, sometimes gaudy lyrics well. There's almost a fun shock when you get to a song like "Fuck Me Pumps". However, the backing instrumentals attempt to do something in the same vein to less success. The background instrumentals attempt to conjure images of those classic numbers, big band, and 90s/00s R&B, but it manages to sound poorly produced and heavily dated. Favorite tracks: "You Sent Me Flying/Cherry", "October Song"

Surprisingly jazzy! Not what I expected at all - I guess I only know her from her later stuff.... An engaging and enjoyable listen! Fave track - "Fuck Me Pumps" was great, and I guess the only one of these I'd heard before. Also enjoyed "In My Bed" and "Amy Amy Amy"

Having never heard a performance by Winehouse, I was kind of pleasantly surprised.

No doubting Amy's vocal talents: one of the greatest. The songs on Frank aren't as good as her next album, though Fuck Me Pumps always makes me smile. Some of the production is inconsistent.

4/05/2022 Today's Album: "Frank" by Amy Winehouse - This is a fairly solid early 2000s singer song-writer and R&B record by the legendary Amy Winehouse, whom I had only known prior through a few hits. I think her voice is probably the best thing about this record. Not only does she have incredible technical ability in tonality and range, but she also brings a lot of personality to every line she sings. I like a lot of the bass and guitar grooves that are sprinkled across this album, with only a few songs feeling either boring or simply off/underdeveloped. I think my overall problem with listening to this is that Channel Orange was such a solid introduction into R&B music and although this album can be no considered bad, it just doesn't stack up within the R&B pop genre as anything less than a predecessor. Ironically, "Frank" (Ocean) ended up outdoing her. That being said, this is no album to simply shrug at and there is a lot of great material on this project. I like the sweet love song (There Is) No Greater Love and I think Cherry is a really funny interlude track where she confesses that she has feelings for another to her partner, but then admits the other person is her new guitar. I like the very fun and bouncy Amy Amy Amy and all of the other highlights listed are worth checking out if you like some great R&B and even greater vocal performances. Check this one out if Amy Winehouse has ever interested you before or you simply liked other R&B projects and want more. Damn, she’s got swagger. The strength of this album isn’t really in the songs but her performance. Her voice is an elastic band and it’s fun to hear her play with it and riff on these melodies. She’s clearly having a lot of fun. On her next album, she’ll dial back the riffing a smidge and record some truly great songs. But this album captures her raw and unfiltered, doing some loose and jazzy numbers about love, sex and nightlife. The production oozes cool, balancing retro and modern styles, and provides a perfect stage for her to do her thing. Song after song she lets it rip and it’s a blast to listen to.

GTFO. Absolute LEGEND of an artist, really just riffing from the depths of her soul, a little bit different every time. I love how jazzy and playful the tracks are, and I just freaking love her, OK?!

Pros: - One of the most evocative and romantic voices in popular music - This album is less in-your-face than Back to Black, and while I like in-your-face music, I appreciate the contrast in the two albums. This one is more romance from a positive light. - Lots of different \"feels\" on this album which I really appreciate. Cons: Misc: - The only con for me when listening to Amy is that I can't think of her without thinking of the word \"tragic\". I'm cursed. I think/hope in the future that will go away because I completely adore her and her music. To me it's like being a kid on Christmas day and getting the most fun video game console and a few games, but then after a week or so there aren't any new games released for that console. It's still new! It's still amazing and powerful and brings you so much joy! But you have this sadness that there won't be any new games. I don't recall any other artists that I feel this way about who have passed.

It's a decent album, but not really into her voice or sound. I like her version of Moody's Mood For Love. 3/5

Oh, Amy… 'Frank,' Amy Winehouse’s debut album, refers partly to the quintessential crooner Frank Sinatra, one of Amy’s earliest influences. A couple of tracks in I heard more jazz/blues singer Billie Holiday than Sinatra. Although I would not title Amy’s LP 'Billie' because Ms. Holiday, despite her own problems with men and drugs, had so much more depth (where would one drop ‘Strange Fruit’ among the collection of songs on 'Frank'?), both in voice and lyrics, a multi-dimensional artist in comparison to Amy Winehouse and her singular lyrical focus: hooking up with the bad boys. Every single song on 'Frank' (save one about the death of her pet bird, Ava- ‘October Song’) is about Amy’s desperate and shallow pursuit of masculine affection. Comedian Chris Rock once commented that a father’s main goal in raising a daughter is to keep her off the (stripper) pole. Amy’s mother and brother are briefly mentioned on 'Frank,' but no reference to her father, so who knows what went on there? I have no information nor do I even want to pronounce any kind of judgment on their relationship. Just wondering. I happen to like strong, independent women. And that bleeds over into my musical preference. One of my favorite female artists is Liz Phair, who has made a career out of unashamedly affirming and asserting her own sexuality. One gets the impression from her songs that her family origin might have had its own dysfunction that affected, for example, her ability to choose healthier relationships with men. But Amy is damaged in a way well beyond Liz. On the opener, she cruelly says to her man, ‘You always wanna talk it through, I don’t care… You always wanna talk it through, I’m ok. I always have to comfort you every day. But that’s what I need to do, are you gay?’ Other songs have her sleeping with married men, boasting about it even (‘What Is It About Men’), and then brutally criticizing slutty girls who just want to score a good looking sugar daddy (‘Fuck Me Pumps.’) On ‘I Heard Love Is Blind‘ she excuses (blames, even) her own cheating on her man by asking what did you expect, I was drunk, and he looked like you! But hey, at least ‘I was thinking of you when I came (with the other guy).’ Amy Amy Amy’ features the background singers in chorus pleading with her to get her shit together, but to no avail. Amy is cursed with her attraction to the kinds of dudes who apparently are great in bed but rotten elsewhere. And then there’s the hints of alcohol and substance abuse. Several of the songs have Amy hungover, so the drinking has already begun. The drug abuse, of course, was not far behind, and eventually took her life. Despite the competent jazz players who earn at least a star themselves on 'Frank,' Amy’s sickness just taints the whole thing, at least for this listener. I’m no stranger to the blues, musically or otherwise, but the sadness I feel for Amy is even more pronounced by what could have been. It’s very clear on this LP where she’s headed and the consequences that catch up with all who stumble down her path. ‘I can’t help you if you won’t help yourself,’ she sings to one of her ‘bad boy’ lovers, unknowingly prophesying her own demise. Would that Amy had listened to her own advice.

Wine house not quite up to full power here, and as usual I find it hard to separate the music from how rapidly the full star gestalt would burn out the filament in that bulb.

Based as fuck

I liked this a lot! I was a fan of Amy Winehouse before, but like a lot of artists I haven't ever listened to her albums all the way through, I just listened to individual songs. I was really able to hear the Frank Sinatra influence on the album, particularly on Moody's Mood For Love and No Greater Love. There were some much more boring tracks, but overall solid album.

holy shit this is amazing? did she only have two albums?! I listened to both Frank and Back to Black, and the deluxe editions of both with the bonus content of course everything is a 10/10 super talented artist, gone way too soon, holy shit that’s depressing

I don't usually like vocal jazz - but I've always felt Amy Winehouse was a bit different. I enjoyed listening to this - more familiar with her later albums.

I don't know. Not really for me. Her voice doesn't do it for me. The production on some tracks is extra cool but you can find that done better elsewhere I think. Favorite tracks: Stronger Than Me, What is it about Men, Amy Amy Amy, Outro
