Did not finish but she’s good

Blends genres wells.

Nice laid back R&B

нормалек, вайбово. 1 песню сохранил

Felt like a bad bitch while listening to this

fun album, not close to her best songwriting or vocals

I pray to one day doing something for the first time, as good as this debut album.

Inte på riktigt samma nivå som Back to black, vilket förstås är svårt, men även denna är bra. Sjukt att bästa låten What is it about men inte släpptes som singel. Solid fyra.

Pretty incredible album. Great song writing, voice and production. Felt like I was hearing her at a bar in some downtown and she was performing. 9/10 album

Fantastic Voice. Looking forward to learning more.

I’m not usually into contemporary soul or R&B, but this was a solid album. The hip-hop-inspired beats on some tracks gave it a cool Acid Jazz vibe that I enjoyed. While a few songs didn’t fully click for me, the album is pretty consistent overall and holds up well from start to finish.

I really like Amy. This album is not as good as Back to Black but it’s still pretty good.

I could listen to her song basically anything, so prob a touch high on the rating here given the songwriting on this one, which pales in comparison to her best. Still loved this though

I liked this album a lot more than I thought I would. Amy Winehouse had such a great voice and it fit really well with the jazzy music.

Vocals are obviously the highlight here. Got a little tired of the singing style toward the end of the album, but generally really enjoyed it. Also some of the tracks toward the end were a bit lame but the front half of the album is pretty great. Definitely a unique voice that makes you want to hear more.

Great album. Doesn't have the influence of Mark Ronson yet, so it's more straight-forward. Definitely helped spark the surge in retro-Soul.

I think I liked this more than Back to Black. Loads of influences worn on tue sleeve, but lots of talent.

I can't believe it took me this long to listen to Amy Winehouse.

Great jazzy palate and a wonderful voice. "Fuck me pumps" had fun lyrics

There’s a certain kind of retro styling that pisses me off, like the Michael buble or Greta van fleet types who love the classics but don’t innovate whatsoever. Amy winehouse was not one of those types, the mix of modern r&b, hip hop, and a bit of rock with the classics of jazz and r&b she’s paying homage to blend together perfectly. An excellent album. R.I.P.

Decent album. Nothing stood out instrumentally as amazing but it was carried by the vocals. Favorite songs were: You sent me flying / cherry Fuck me pumps 7/10

Great album and I'd never listened to it before!

cool jazz songs from the talented, but tragic, Amy

I don't think, it's her best album, yet great.

What a talent she was. I really enjoyed this was well as a lot of the songs Spotify played after the album was over. Best way to describe it was just “cool.” I’d go back to this and want to back in black (I think that’s what it’s called) again.

woo ! some of the lead singles were very modern (fuck me pumps, take the box, amy amy amy) it was refreshing

Solid listen, incredible voice. Not quite as good as Back to Black but pretty close. Fuck Me Pumps was a lot of fun.

The album cover is deceiving -- she looks pretty happy. The songs aren't though. Soulful, jazzy R&B delivered by a great voice.

Wow what a voice!

Quite different from what I was expecting. But it kept me interested. 4 of 5.

Solid album. She has a great voice and the songs are interesting. Was worth a listen.

Wonderful voice, unique talent. Production and song-wise Back To Black was a step forward but as a debut, this is fantastic.

Pre-listening thoughts: oh my god and here’s another artist that won’t appear on the generator after this cause we already got their first album! Finishing up a lot of artists in our first 250. Excited for this cause I LOVED back to black. Post/during listening thoughts: this is really great, love Amy winehouse. BUT. I feel like she really found her songwriting/singing groove on back to black (feel awful saying this cause she was obviously going thru it at that point😭). This is slightly weaker and disjointed. Songs are still fantastic but this is very obviously a debut album. Back to black just had like HIT after HIT. And this album is a little bloated. But this could also grow into a 5 star album with relistens. 8.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: Intro/Stronger than Me, Fuck Me Pumps, Take the Box, Amy Amy Amy Least fav tracks: n/a

Love Amy

That was very listenable.

Great album. I know it's not better, but I like it more than Black to Black. It has a more cohesive feel to me and I've always loved Stronger Than Me, F Me Pumps, (There Is) No Greater Love, In My Bed, and Amy Amy Amy. The highs of Back to Black are much higher, but this album is great throughout. It remains a tragedy we no longer have her.

Dustin’ off ma fuck me pumps

Great album

Was a little worried I wouldn’t enjoy this but overall was really good. Maybe is a little Long but I could see all these songs being choice cuts when not all strung together 4/5

Awesome debut

Her voice is ridiculous (in a good way), and she was definitely the focus- she was rightfully the star of the album. I dig the stripped back instrumentation, although I would love some shredding or built up jams.

What a voice. I skimmed through her wikipedia while listening and got pretty bummed out. Gone too soon!

not as great as back to black, but it’s still amy winehouse and amy winehouse's music is great so

Good album, although a bit weaker for my taste than her major success Back to Black.

Amy winehouse is always a great listen

Similar style to Back to Black but the production is less slick

Interesting arrangement, cool voice. A little too polished production for me though

Such an authentic artist, love the jazzy bad girl vibe

Help yourself is missing in spotify. This is a great love album

A great talent with a fabulous voice. Album full of gritty and witty songs

Pretty nice, she had a lovely smokey voice.

I was surprised by that album. I didn't like that much Amy's voice and I could not understand what the fuss about her is all about. But now I get it. I don't like her Pop songs singing. Her voice is so boring and monotone to me when she sings Pop. But this album, man, really surprised me. I am not a Jazz enthusiast but when she sings Jazz, she is really in her element. A really warming, smooth and moving album.

Reeeeeeallyyy good

Cet chi la ama e chi la odia io la amo

Wow, what an incredible vocal talent she was. I love the stripped down music allowing her voice to shine through.

The uniqueness in her voice is definitely a standout. I enjoyed the album. I don't really know what I can say about it apart from that I really liked it

Not as extraordinary than Back to Basics. But still good.

A very solid debut with a SEAL OF APPROVAL from Robert Antichristgau who gave this a score of a dud. Maybe it's because I like soul music and perhaps part of it is my nostalgia for the news about Amy Winehouse's dumpster fire of a life in the public eye as a kid that gives me a soft spot for this album but even so I don't think you could call this a dud even if you're not a big fan. The album itself is interestingly produced with the instrumentation and production varying in tone from song to song, with the album itself as a result sounding like a mosaic with the common themes of debauchery and being a trainwreck. Not as good as Back To Black but a killer debut, I can see how thrilled her record company would have been to nab her early and can't imagine the shitshow that would have been that office when she bit the big one. Highlights: Fuck Me Pumps, I Heard Love Is Blind, (There Is) No Greater Love, Take The Box, Help Yourself

She’s awesome

Amy is one of the most blunt and honest songwriters you'll ever hear. She’s promiscuous, man-obsessed, a cheater, an alcoholic, and she doesn’t care who knows it. Frank serves as a sort of confessional, where Amy lets free of all her deepest wounds and darkest secrets. Her smoky voice is absolutely perfect for the jazzy, neo-soul instrumentation. Her voice is the star of the show; no doubt about it, but it didn’t hurt that the songs are really well-written too. 4.3/5

Lost her too soon. Overall a fabulous album that makes you feel. Too many others don't.

Pretty nice songs

Great album. She would’ve been one of the best… but got in the wrong line instead. RIP.

I never paid this album as much attention as Back to Black, but it's great. A little jazzier in places, and arrangements show off a little more of the smoky cabaret side of Amy's voice. I still prefer the next album, but this is definitely worth a listen.

Damn shame she's gone.

I rate you sent me flying a 2 star because its not really for me and not the type of music I like. I rate take the box a 3 star because I don't really know what it means and its not for me.

Song: you sent me flying i like this song because it's like jazz and it's not too slow or too fast Song: take the box i like this song because my mom listens to these songs and she started me to like them but i only like them a little bit Song:October song i like this song because the lyrics was like kinda of good

I think this album is fire because I love the instruments used and her voice flows well with them. Her lyrics are nice but a bit hard to understand. Overall she has a great voice and is a great singer.

I really like this album because I always love music by Amy. I like how she uses her vocals and the lyrics are also good.

I rate you sent me flying 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ because there is a lot of piano playing and the singing is really good. I rate take the box a 3.5⭐⭐⭐ because It just didn't sound that good but the instruments where good.

She would have been fun to party with. But more importantly, she had a sharp wit with a swingin' delivery.

Iconic. RIP

For a few moments, I thought she sounded a LITTLE like Adele. I assume that is the vocal processing that is used on EVERYTHING. I mean, we have heard "Rehab," this is interesting that it is the first album, so we know where she went from here. I liked this album a great deal, it reminded me of a lot of some of the older jazz singers. The combination of bossa nova and hip hop really worked for me. Top tracks: "Stronger Than Me," "Moody's Mood For Love," "In The Box," "October Song," "Amy Amy Amy"

Not as good as Back to Black. Her vocals are still incredible, but the songs themselves are a little all over the place. And so the album is missing a certain rhythm; feels a bit more stop and start. I would say that's mostly the musical arrangements and production but sometimes it's her lyrics too. Back to Black was a definite 5; this is somewhere between a 3 and 4. I think I'll call it 3.5 and round up on account of her great vocals and some solid songs even if they didn't always point in the same direction. Favorites were Stronger Than Me, You Sent Me Flying, F Me Pumps, Take the Box, and Amy Amy Amy.

My takes on pop music from this era have mostly aged well. Amy Winehouse is a stark exception though...I really wish I let myself enjoy this back then because it really is great

* Winehouse's voice is as soulful as it is on her subsequent album * Precussion is crisp, but maybe a little overpowering * Other instruments are pleasant on the ears * Overall a pleasant listen. Great bridge between jazz and pop

Pretty good, I prefer Back to Black.

Smooth beats, highlights Amy’s soulful vocals, on some parts the beats are too empty and don’t compliment her. Definitely a listen again; F me pumps is amazing, cheery but about a depressing subject; perfectly shows her talent and songwriting. I heard love is blind has a great beat and songwriting. Halfway through the album I think it shares the same problem as Pure Heroine: a lot of the production sounds too similar, there is no real apparent change. However, the albums consistency saves it from becoming boring. In my beds ending is amazing and one of the highlights on the album. Amy really finds her footing in the later half of the album; great instrumentals and singing. Great album, it does meld together a bit, initial listen: 8.5/10 or 4.25/5.

While not as strong as its predecessor, "Frank" is still an incredible debut album which proved to be even better revisiting it for a second time. "Stronger Than Me" is my favorite song here. Not only is it a great intro to this album, it's also a great intro to Amy Winehouse in general. The Frank Sinatra and Bossa nova influences really make this album feel special. Favorite track: Stronger Than Me 3.5/5

Клевый альбом, печальное настроение

Another Amy...another complex album. My first thoughts were annoyed and angry. She is complaining and almost encouraging toxic masculinity, slut shaming women, and turns around and talks about how its no big deal to cheat because the guy looked like her partner. Just felt so hypocritical and fun of herself it annoyed me. But then I listened more and What is it about Men and I Heard Love is Blind really made me think of how our society expects women to be prudes and slutty at the same time. Also the way we promote love and romance in rom-coms and that men only love you when they act like dicks and you put up with it, until they MAYBE change. On top of that toxic relationships and how those mess with your head in a way that is unexplainable unless you have been in one. You can think you are in love but really you are in a total mind f@ck. Yes it is hypocritical, yes it is dark and unhealthy versions of love, but it is also what our society has created for women to live in. 40 year old me knows better and blocked out what 20 year old me lived.

I actually liked this one more than I thought I would! Sometimes can find jazz a bit repetitive but Amy is an icon!

What a tragic prophecy for herself, damn. Definitely didn't age well on multiple fronts and some of the lyrics are ... well ... yikes... ,but Amy's voice is just too magical for me to care too much; and musically, it's a good record. Although 'Frank' is most certainly not her finest piece of work, she is still hitting with it more than she misses. It's an intriguing album with many special elements, I really like the bland of jazz and R&B I would probably prefer to rate this a 3 in normal circumstances, but I have had some experience with this list and the many similar, terrible albums it provides, so it deserves some extra goodwill to pump it up to a 4.

I've been meaning to try Amy Winehouse for some time now. I'm glad this pushed me to do so. She's excellent, and it's a shame she can't give us more. Fav Tracks: You Sent Me Flying/Cherry, I Heard Love is Blind, Mr. Magic (Through the Smoke) Least Fav Tracks: N/A

To think she was only 19-20 when recording this album... Amazing album, and I don't doubt we'll also get Back To Black eventually.

I thought I knew what Amy Winehouse was, but it turns out she's a lot more than the mainstream radio stations have lead me to believe over the years. I found quite a bit of enjoyment in the music and lyrics on this one and that's something I'll keep in mind in the future Standouts Fuck Me Pumps What Is It About Men Amy Amy Amy 4/5

4.7 - J 3.5 - S

What an extrordinary voice and what an enjoyable project. The only complain is that I wish it was a little shorter, but at least is all killer and no filler (excluding intro and outro)

There was a period in my life where this album was important; it came to me at a time when I was getting through a break-up. Take the Box, Know You Now, and Cherry all still hit me. The lyrics are clearly written from a strong feminine point of view, but they are so detailed and vivid they paint a picture that many can interpolate themselves into. Amy was in many ways the Everyman/Everywoman we could all relate to and cheer for (who ultimately became the car crash we all couldn’t turn away from). The production is a little too much sometimes, the 00s hip-hop boom bap shows up more than is necessary. While I do love Amy’s lyrics, there are points in her debut where they veer into juvenile territory. Also the last few songs are throwaways. So yes it certainly has its flaws, but I still have love for it. Probably a 3.5, but I’ll round up for Amy.

pleasant surprise

It is pretty nice. Long. Lovely. A pastiche but adds plenty of modern elements. Worth a listen for sure.

Id be surprised if this isn’t in the top on lots and lots of best lounge albums. Amy’s soulful yet forceful voice is a nice juxtaposition over the kind of hip-hop-esque drums found on some of the tracks that I find to be the weakest part of the album. Favorite - Fuck Me Pumps

This one has held up pretty well.

Back to Black is Amy Winehouse’s magnum opus, but her debut album, Frank, is equally impressive. Frank has a stronger jazz influence compared to its more classic soul-inspired successor. The title, evidently referring to Amy’s love for Sinatra, could equally apply to the candid and raw honesty of the lyrics. There are also ‘90s Neo-Soul influences in the music. For instance, “October Song” blends these influences with the jazz elements, with a playful reference to “Lullaby of Birdland” and a nod to Sarah Vaughan. At the age of 19, Amy’s voice, while not as confident as on her later material, is still strong and distinctively hers.

Very good debut album. Enjoyed

damn she has a soulful voice. this feels like this was her still coming into her style though, relying more on the already existing soul sound. i feel like her later albums are much more unique and interesting. It really was a tragedy that we lost her so soon, she was an absolute talent...

Another reviewer said it better than I could: "Amy Winehouse released her debut album when she was just 19, singing about her life where the men that she craved love from were all weak, manipulative or needy." Some reviewers seem to have taken this as an insult to men, or women, or both. To me, she was just being authentic. And she wasn't without self-awareness: Amy, Amy, Amy. This is an extraordinary album for a 19yo to have produced. Great voice and great songs. And, as we know, she got even better. We were lucky to have her.

Love her voice. Great album

Good album, started off strong but got weaker later on imo

Seems great. She was unique. What a loss.

Just excellent modern singer jazz. The comparison to Frank Sinatra is very easy to make in style/form/genre, and Amy just puts some modern style into the music. Her voice is wonderful to listen to. She doesn't have the silky-smooth tones of Frank, but a little more abrasive sound that matches her twist to the form. Honestly, I've never listened to Amy Winehouse before. I will be listening to Amy Winehouse again. Favorite Song(s): Know You Now, I Heard Love is Blind

it jars me to hear Amy Winehouse's vocals coated in the production caramel of the early 2000's neo-soul hallmarks rather than what you normally expect from her -- throwback 60's soul worship -- but i still welcome it as a fan of that sound. there are moments that feel a bit undercooked, namely the bossa nova and reggae elements that seem to be trying for some connection to the past, music that she liked but didn't yet have the chops or backing to pull off. this makes the whole affair sag a bit in the middle, before picking right back up by "In My Bed". i don't think Frank is some bypassed masterpiece, but i do think it's worth looking into to get an idea of who Amy was before Back to Black. i think it'd serve you better than watching that utterly ghoulish movie that came out this year. also it's an utter crime Help Yourself isn't available in the US, considering it's the best look into what music she'd make later in her career. you're telling me the copyright is that strong on some single from 1946? get real.

I tend to avoid singing in my jazz, but Amy Winehouse is an exception. Her voice is quite the instrument. Great album. Could be a 5, but ... all that singing does lead to some dull spots.

In the right setting and mood, I'd listen to this again.

Obviously not the album she is most famous for but a classic nevertheless. The lyrics are honest, the delivery is fantastic and the moments of naïvety are only more heartbreaking with the knowledge of what her life had in store. There is an experimentation to the record that pays homage to the jazz that has influenced her but trying to create something purely in her mould. Something she would nail on the follow up

Really good; right up there with Ella and Billie. If I have a complaint, it’s with the continuous short line, pause being in every song that would make this monotonous if not for her distinct voice.

Love Amy's singing and there are some good songs on this one. Some excellent lyrics as well. I do prefer it when she's got the whole band behind her, though.

Liked more than anticipated. Would give 3.5 but that’s not an option and I’m feeling generous

Ik had geen idee dat Amy nog maar 19 was op dit album. Lekker jazzy met een vleug pop. Teksten gaan wel alleen maar over vriendjes, maar je hoeft ook niet veel anders te verwachten van een meisje van 19.

Super snazzy jazzy debut with big sexy clash of 00s neo soul and retro 50s styles. Kind of more along the lines of ‘promising debut’ rather than true 1001 material and probably Amy’s second best album but still, amazing voice and lots of greatness and spiritedness swishing around in here also.

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. A sultry, smokey blues/ jazz club feel.

Great bluesy, smoky vocals

Magnifique album nostalgique et plus creusé que son prédécesseur. Merci Amy d'avoir béni nos vies par ta présence.

It was a fun album to listen to overall. It was a good vibe - I liked the instrumentals. Amy's voice is wonderful - it's sad she went through what she did. I enjoyed pretty much every track. That said, nothing in particular stood out for me - hard to pick a fave, but I'll settle for 'You Sent Me Flying / Cherry'

Insane debut album, generational singer on very interesting tunes

just beautiful. love her music.

Frank is right, as Winehouse is really shooting from the hip with her brutal transparency throughout this album. You can hurtle the slings and arrows calling it problematic but if you know her story, you know that was her entire brand. Her filterless, irrepressible cursively-sung honesty is on full display and set to a more stripped back neo-soul sound than her Ronson days. The lyrics, sometimes empowering, sometimes self-degrading, reflect what she wants and what is that exactly? It's messy, it's complicated, and isn't that perfectly human?

Excellent

Frank is an album that i really like, even more than Amy Winehouse's second album and that album was great too. While Back To Black was more serious in nature, Frank was definitely more humorous, snarky, and it really just seemed like Amy had a lot of fun creating this album which gives me some of the same vibes as a lot of the rock and roll artists from the 50s and 60s. And in general the music, Amy's vocals, and the lyrics were all seriously great. My only real flaw with this album is the double tracks which are not handled as well as they could be handled but other than that, this album is great. Best Song: In My Bed Worst Song: Amy Amy Amy

Rating this based on talent

She has such an amazing voice. I prefer 'Back to Black', but this album is great too. 4/5

Nice jazz tunes

I thought I was going to hate it! The first 12 seconds of Jazz scatting - aaggghhhh! Thankfully, it was very short-lived and I loved this album. Another member of the '27 Club', addiction can be brutal.

Always good to revisit.

Excellent

Love the production on this. It’s not on the same level as “Back to Black” but for the debut album of a 19 year old, it’s mighty impressive. Great songs, with some unexpected cynism and humor in a lot of the songs. Great stuff.

One of the horniest albums of all time. If you listen close enough, you can hear her ovulating (sorry)

I love you Amy

Was able to listen to this again without thinking about everything good and (very) bad that came after. I bought this not long after it came out, and it was clear that Amy was a real talent. A good album, but not a great one, and I'm not surprised that this has been dropped in later editions of the 1001 book.

Cracker.

Favorite Track: In My Bed

Chill, sad, funk

peaceful enjoyable same vibe

this one is a classic. a classic that didn't age quite so well, truthfully, but a classic nonetheless.

everyone knows Valerie and Back to Black but i hadn’t heard any of these before. still a super solid album

New School percussion along with old school funk and R&B rhythms make for a solid first album. Amy’s voice is so unique, smooth yet unschooled, innocent yet dirty. She was one of a kind and is missed by all who were touched by her music.

Not a bad song by her. A shame she died

I give it 3.7 rounded to 4 stars. I really enjoyed this album after listening to it a few times. Highlights were F Me Pumps and Stronger than Me. I love the modern jazzy feel she brings to all her work. I'll definitely include this album in my rotation in the future.

A voice out of time. Beautiful.

She had soul beyond her years. Gone too soon RIP

Love this album. I can’t believe it’s 21 years old already. It moves forward steadily in a chill way. The overall production is less layered and bold than current similar types of albums and the drums (of course) generally sound like “canned beats” but they are done tastefully.

Nice lyrics

Started at as five stars, but lost a bit of its oomph on the way

Unbelievably talented, and the production work here made her a star. I actually like the tracks better here than on her next album. I hear the sounds of 90s R&B and hip-hop, reggae and dub, all with jazz and old Motown and soul. It’s an attractive package all around. Her frank — no pun intended— lyrics are part of what made her popular I would guess. At the same time, one area where this album fails is the subject matter becomes quite repetitive throughout the album.

Great bass melodies and voice less processed than back in black.

bad case of indie singer voice but very powerful

Solid.

This album feels like something I would listen to on a rainy day with a hot coffee while cleaning my apartment. I love the jazzy style of the instrumentation and how well it fits with Winehouse's vocal style. Looking at it critically, it feels like something is missing from a lot of the songs that I can't quite identify. It's just short of amazing. Favorites are You Sent Me Flying / Cherry, In My Bed, and October Song

Better than I expected! I think I like this better than Back To Black. More like lounge singer jazz with some very biting lyrics. Feels more genuine for some reason. I generally liked it.

Really good. I liked the stripped back jazz feel

Amy's voice is striking- it immediately captivates the listener. She has am amazing range and timbre- whether singing softly or belting it out. I think the smooth, jazz-influenced songs are my favorite (though the "skat" does get old after a while). That being said, you can tell this was an early album. Some of the songs lack depth- both in subject and instrumentation. There is a lot of generic drum-machine rythym section in sounds that would be so much nicer with a real instrumental backing. The piano sounds nice in comparison. Overall- I think this album establishes Amy as a powerhouse, and opens the door for he future stardom.

Good album

Queen 🫡. Loved it, listened to take the box before and it’s still my fav at least of the album. 8/10

Nice Soul Music…good to listen …8/10

Amy was THE modern lounge singer

Soulful throughout. This album made me wish we still had Amy with us.

Such a good album. It really makes me feel like I’m in a Smokey jazz bar in like 2005. I think it will be a really great winter album too. I can see myself curled up by the fire with some hot chocolate with it on in the background.

Although I hadn't heard this album before, I could still recognise the vocal and lyrical talent that is built upon in "Back to Black". I've seen some people on here complain about the lyrics but I actually appreciate how she discusses the issues she was facing at the time, even if it comes off as "Frank".

Imagine, if you will, Erykah Badhu making "coochie-coo" type baby noises. Actually, you don't have to. You could just listen to this album. This is an early 2000s take on what was new and innovative in the mid-90s. There's a bit about it that reminds me of the Brand New Heavies, but ultimately I don't think that Winehouse has fully found her feet yet. Saying that, there are some corking tracks in this. "Amy Amy Amy" is great. Good enough to lift the album from 3 to 4.

Enjoyable. Missing the sparkle of her later work.

I don’t hate it. Her voice is an acquired taste but not bad.

I haven't listened to much Amy Winehouse but I really liked this one.

That girl really had the soul of jazz. I don't like to compare albuns, but that one is way more spiritual than Back To Black. Has a different soul. It's more catchy. More engaging. I don't know how to explain it, but it sounds even sexier! Very pleasant surprise

Gran debut de una artista fundamental de la música. Pertenece por desgracia al club del 27 pero sus interpretaciones están llenas de elegancia y sentimiento. No es su mejor álbum que es obviamente Back to Black pero este debut no desentona en absoluto. Such an inspiration Not her best album, but still so good

I fucking love amy winehouse (jaz)

Very glad this came up and a good listen. Don’t think it’s her best album but still very good 8/10

She is just an all-time voice for me.

Still awesome debut from a great talent who died too young.

What a voice, and what a sad story, and what a traumatised young lady. Not as immediate as her follow up, but really funny and clever, and wearing her (relatively uncool at the time) influences on her sleeve.

Great, shit got me horny

Good modern jazz pop

Wow, I loved this. Been sleeping on Amy winehouse, can't wait to listen to more

Classics and timeless sounding music, would listen again

Some of the songs were fun to listen too. Good lyrics and nice background music.

Great album

7/10 I love her voice. The arrangements support her just fine, their just a bit too sleepy. It didn't detract from my enjoyment but that's why I couldn't go higher 6-13-2024

Felt like I was in a chill coffee shop

She really does have a great, jazzy voice. This album has a couple of fun tracks that lean jazzy or bossa-nova, but I think Amy Winehouse really hits the magic formula with the full band pop sound on Back to Black.

Surprisingly good. Never given her the time of day, but to hear this from an 18-19 year old is pretty incredible. Normally not my genre at all so fair play. A few of the backing beats seem unnecessary, the latter half of the second track is ruined by them for example. Can see why she was fuming with the mixing of the album. Some really good tracks on here though, what a voice on such a young woman. 3.5*

I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a full Amy Winehouse album . I actually liked this way more than her more known songs

I actually think this is almost better than ‘Back To Black’. Certainly, I wasn’t expecting how much this leans into the world of club music and 4/4 beats, but I was pleasantly surprised. Jazz, bossa, funk, house, rnb, acid-jazz. It’s all in there, along with her incredible voice, and in some ways the variety present here is more invigorating (at least to me) than the straight-ahead soul she went for on her next album. This is a very accomplished debut.

Such a talented, emotional voice

Great voice

Was für ei e grandiose Stimme...

I think I prefer Back to Black as a whole album, but this still v.good with exceptional vocals.

I've never been a big fan but quite enjoyed this lounge music without the (overplayed) hits.

What a powerful voice which was cut way too short in life.

Bombastic, sultry, and delightfully un-PC. Unmistakable and unmatchable. Not every track is a banger, but most are strong, and it stands as a lovely first shot from an artist who ended up with few to take.

Really vibey stuff here. First time actually sitting down and listening to Winehouse, but I'm not surprised that I really liked this. My kind of pop, moody and jazzy. 4/5

Voice of the beehive.

First listen to this First Album. Drips with lots of Talent. Was familiar with her as her flame was burning at its hottest, and then burnt out. A terrible end and addition to the tragic 27 year old and done club.

Beautiful voice. Amy takes you on a journey where you’re hanging on every word and feeling. Band is tight. Solid album

What a great voice...

Classic Amy. Great to learn more of her original story and check out her debut. Easy to see how she evolved into the superstar she became

This is great.

Not familiar with her songs.

jazz/r&b with a retro flair. rich soulful voice, that, depending in the song, can be powerful or vulnerable. while not as polished as her follow up, 2006’s back to black, certainly an impressive debut. sadly, in july 2011, she succumbed to alcohol poisoning at the age of 27. r.i.p. amy. highlights: “fuck me pumps” “what is it about men” “amy amy amy”

Pretty good. Think her second album is better Rating: 3.6

This felt like a demo of Motown cuts or something similar. Some really nice stuff, some funky beats, and some beautiful, cool vocals.

Amy Winehouse is known for having a tragic backstory. After her death, Amy's music is still listened to a lot. The album's songs are really good. I think "Frank" is greater than "Back to Black". It's way better than I thought. 4 stars from me.

I've never listened to Amy's music before and I like it more than I expected to.

Good album. Love the jazzy vibe and her voice is awesome.

Bine, bine

Anyone one listening to Frank can appreciate the talent of Amy, although the song subjects are very much those of a teenager, and so weren’t as interesting as they might have been at an earlier time in my life. My favourites were: Cherry, Amy and f me pumps…they were great.

A little dated, but still fantastic.

Not bad. I thought I didn't like Amy Winehouse very much, but this album was a pleasant surprise. I'll explore her back catalogue a bit I think.

she was pretty good i won’t lie…

Remember buying this off the strength of one track i'd heard on late night radio just before it came out ( the one with the same Nas sample ) . Aside from the slight hip hop elements, it's a laid-back jazzy album with several standout tunes, and an amazing voice throughout. Not perfect, but that's for the next album.

I hadn't listened to this album as a whole piece before. What a voice, foregrounded by simple jazzy arrangments. Powerful.stuff.

Great voice, such talent. Sad it came to such a tragic end. These songs not as strong as her other outing but still mad enjoyable.

There are so many artists whose stories ended far too soon. Amy Winehouse is unfortunately one of those. It’s so unfortunate that all of the most beautiful and talented people face the most tragedy in life. But in reality that is what creates the best music. Amy’s debut is one that feels unfamiliar with its own sound, and yet aware of what makes a successful neo-soul album. I standby the opinion that anything influenced or directly related to jazz often benefits the most when they fully embrace it. Frank most definitely does. And god does Amy truly have a voice like no other. Her accent adds so much to her character, and she just sits in a league of her own. But the music itself is equally as interesting. The vocal jazz live band elements mixed with electronic trip hop drums id a match made in heaven that is hard to do wrong, unless you just happen to have no knowledge on making music. The topics and themes of Frank aren’t as personal and serious as those found on Back to Black. It’s less focused on herself and her own struggles, and more on the people around her and the things she has experienced through love. But really she could be talking about anything and it would sound good. She just had a knack for worming her way into your brain with her voice. And it breaks my heart reading about all of the things she was put through. Now it seems like all they can do is profit off of her death, especially with her new movie coming out soon. Talent like this that the world loses needs to be left alone and at peace. Rating: 7/10

Not sure why I thought I wouldn't, but I enjoyed this more than I expected.

I used to dislike her voice, but I got used to it. I think she took jazz in a good direction; a good mix of modern and retro.

Excellent as always.

I was expecting to give this a much lower score, because I hate 20s/50s revival with a passion. But the fresh instrumentation suits her charismatic voice perfectly.

Nice album

Winehouse is an amazing vocal talent and the jazz ensemble is fantastic. A lot of the subject matter didn’t register for me but no denying the sound.

Little quieter than her later stuff but still good.

really liked it! definitely need to listen to Back To Black now.

Never listened much to Amy Winehouse. Possibly my mistake as this was pretty good. Amy added to favorites for further exploration.

Love Amy :)

Winehouse borrows from 50s traditional pop and 60s Motown soul with modern pop production and all sorts of chill, groovy jazz genres, with other genres like downtempo, reggae, and bossa nova. Compared to Back to Black, it's not as refined or mature. The instrumentals are more like instrumental backings like a lot of pop electronica from the period (e.g. Moby). It's very much a pop album that goes the extra mile and is largely characterized by Winehouse's distinguished soulful vocals and gospel backing. The first 5 tracks were the strongest. From there, it is a mix bag that is largely enjoyable and innovates but does feel underwhelming to what she's capable of. Also, due to the mix of styles, it loses the thematic coherency that Back to Black would have. Favorites: Know You Now, Fuck Me Pumps, Mr Magic

AW really shows off her jazz bona fides in this album, it felt like a breath of fresh air having listened to Back to Black many times. I particularly enjoyed the references to Lullaby of Birdland.

A self-assured debut from a 19-year-old Amy Winehouse. Although it's hard to listen to this album without thinking about all the things to come (the alcoholism, the drug abuse, the bad relationships, the constant paparazzi, the bulimia etc.), I keep returning to her voice. Frank doesn't hit the heights of Back to Black and a lot of the lyrics are about Amy's dysfunctional relationships with men, but it marked the debut of a true original.

On one hand, this album made me realize how much of what I like about Back to Black is the production. On the other, Frank made me realize why Amy's voice and vocal styling was such a big deal. Unfortunately I remember the media cycles around her, her struggles with substance abuse, and her weight and appearance so well from that time and it makes it all feel so heavy and sad.

One hell of a voice, from one hell of a trashy lady.

Her voice was stellar

Amy Winehouse is a polarizing character. There's both a charming 'frankness' you don't normally hear in jazz and a clear sense of humor - sometimes self-deprecating, sometimes simply as a commentary on women's relationship to men and love generally, sometimes on men themselves. I'd challenge anyone listening to this thinking that her lyrics are just about hooking up with bad boys to reflect on how serious she's actually being in her songs, how much of it is commentary on hook up culture in the first place, and how often Frank Sinatra and other greats sang about love and women. If it's fine when other jazz crooners did it in there era, why is it not ok for Winehouse to sing about love and sex in the modern era? Lyrics aside, Amy's voice and the jazz are really what create the atmosphere here. There's a lot of range on display and Amy had one hell of a voice, an extremely unique style, and so so much potential. Her struggles with addiction are truly tragic, and of course add a lot of weight to her lyrics where it's clear she is struggling with her lifestyle and substance abuse.

2 stars

quite good for a debut album

Her voice is a throwback to early Vegas. I would have loved to see her in a small, intimate venue with a pour of top shelf bourbon set upon the little, round table in front of me; lights dimmed except for one spot radiating down from the ceiling, illuminating Amy. I can almost see it. What a performance.

Amy, Amy, Amy. Gorgeous sound and gorgeous voice. Some of the lyrics are a little tough but it feels raw and honest. Low: know you now High: in my bed, you sent me flying/cherry, fuck me pumps, amy amy amy

On voice alone this is a great record. Some solid arrangements too.

I miss her voice

ansprechend, tolle stimme und instrumentierung. auf die dauer dann aber auch anstrengend. trotzdem: reinhören hat sich sehr gelohnt.

Ja, sie war gut die Amy. Der relaxte Sound ist grosse Klasse.

I can't say I get the Any Winehouse hype. I did dig the lyrical content, quite a few alternate takes on relationship dynamics.

Its a 3.5, slightly too long but rounding up.

Delightful

Really like her style and creative melding of jazz, blues and r&b. Too bad we lost her to substance addiction.

Amy Winehouse! Not much more to say.

Feels like being in a jazz club, 4 stars rather than 3 as think I’d buy a vinyl of this (if I had a turntable)

great listen, gone far too soon. rip amy

Really cool record. Certainly not quite Back to Black but it's going for a different vibe. The instrumentals are both more jazzy at points or more trip-hoppy, which is a really amazing and smooth combination with Amy's singing. 7/10

I’ve always enjoyed Amy Winehouse’s sound. It’s a shame that mental health and substance abuse issues cut her life short before she could produce more.

I always thought I wouldnt like Amy Winehouse, but that is maybe because I despise Valery as a song. This album though was a really pleasant surprise. Good songs, nice mix of different styles. Will listen to it more often!

Not quite the hit count of her follow up "Back in Black" but still pleasant to listen to. Jazzy pop songs. Not really my sort of thing but it could be!

This is good. Kinda knew it would be, but first album length listen for me

ni lo termine,pero es interesante

Very good album. Amy Winehouse's vocals are one of the biggest highlights of the entire album. The production is also fantastic as it perfectly utilizes jazz elements to create a cohesive and engaging album. Winehouse's lyricism is also fantastic, as she describes points in her life. One of the most surprising aspects of this album is the fact that she was only 19 when this was recorded, which is an astonishment. As a whole, this was a fantastic album and one I will most certainly be revisiting.

Amy is just fantastic! Need I say anymore? Great album!

No knee slappers for me but her singing and style makes her very easy to listen to. Feels like Im in an old lounge drinking whiskey listening to her.

Very few lows on this album

definitivamente uma voz em um milhão! obra sólida! tenho consciência de que esse 4 possa ser injusto... não estou em um dia legal e a vibe do álbum foi muito dissonante da minha, I was not feeling it! tenho vontade de ouvir de novo, porém

I haven't heard that many songs from Amy Winehouse (and I don't think any of them featured on this album), so this is a nice expansion in my Winehouse-literacy. I like her sound, and I can only hope that when she was recording and performing all of the other issues in her life took a back seat, because she seems like she was a great performer and artist. A solid 4!

This was an awesome album, and so glad it’s on here. I liked it more than Back to Black, too. Really like a Soul Jazz album. Definitely inspired by Frank (duh) Sinatra but also some of the old female crooners like Billie Holiday.

Oh man, so stoked to find this one on here as well. I got this album on vinyl very early into my journey, and I think it was a blind (or rather deaf?) purchase - I just knew she was Amy Winehouse and it had to be good. Sure enough, it's excellent. I've loved it for many years, so many great tracks veering into jazz crooner type territory. Back in Black is more immediate, edging into popular sounds. After hearing that one in the context of this list, I'm honestly not sure which I prefer anymore. But this one is really special and nostalgic to me, the vibes are immaculate. Rest in peace, Amy. Favorite tracks: Intro, You Sent Me Flying, Fuck Me Pumps, No Greater Love, In My Bed, Take the Box, Amy Amy Amy, Outro, Brother. Album art: Adore this one, an off-kilter photo of Amy walking a dog or two in the middle of the night. Might even be a paparazzi photo. But she looks happy and healthy here, maybe that's part of why I love it so much. The pink text to match her top is a spectacular touch. Just about as good as a late-'00s singer album cover could ever be. 4.5/5

This album is so ahead of its time. Not my cup of tea necessarily but definitely an easy 4 star album for me.

Like her.

Apparently this was her debut and she was 19 at the time. This feels exactly like that, which isn't to say it was bad in anyway, just that the hubris of youth is kicking strong in this one. I would have loved to hear what she had to say later in life.

I'll deduct a star because there were a couple of more annoying songs, and the subject matter was a bit one note. But this was shockingly good. I was expecting more piano but she focused on guitar. Her town is absolutely undeniable and this may be better written than her second album.

A voice gone too early.

Amy Winehouse has such a beautiful, unique voice. It was such a joy to hear her sing this album, as I've never heard any of the songs before. I enjoyed the pop and Jazz mix of the instruments as well.

Sygt organ. Meget varieret. Kedelig instrumentering - kunne godt leve uden Kaare Norge guitar og Michala Petri fløjteriet. So dust off your fuck me pumps 😂.

Really good vocals, her other songs are really good too Never really listened to much of her songs before but I’d listen again 4****

Gute Songs, auch mal Soul zwischen ganz viel Hiphop, wo auch die Stimme etwas angenehmer zur Geltung kommt. Moody als Reggaeversion sehr cool!

Nice one

This is sweet. Solid 4/4 beats, swaggering form jazz with great melodies and backing tracks, headlined by Amy's unreal sultry voice

4/5 Świetny głos Amy. Tekstu piosenek nie oceniam, bo nie słuchałem.

Иако није мој жанр леп албум.

She kinda sounds like Janice from Friends but it doesn't matter because damn she can SING. The instruments, arrangements, and songwriting are all really interesting on top of that.

What a great voice

RIP to a Tragic, Toxic queen fr fr Best Song: Cherry Worst Song: No bad songs PS: GET HELP YOURSELF ON SPOTIFY PLS, FIGURE IT OUT @UNIVERSAL ISLAND RECORDS Best Lyric: "Take your time and slowly... but quickly, get out"

I’m not a huge fan of jazz. Correction: I’m not a fan of jazz. But there’s something about Amy Winehouse that is irresistible. “Valerie” is wonderful. “Fuck Me Pumps” is fantastically ascerbic. “You Should Be Stronger Than Me” is a song for the ages. This is eminently listenable in so many moods.

Great music. Some lyrics aged poorly like the ones on the first song

This one was a hard one to rate because there are two versions on Spotify, the American "Clean" Version or the one with just demos and live performances... Would be cool if the OG English version. I've always loved Back to Black, but Amy is undeniable and it is great to hear her when she was younger and a little more raw. Gone wayyyyyy too soon!

Great album, anything amy Winehouse makes is brilliant. I'd say not as catchy as back to black but still a solid 8/10

Put her in my veins. The self-awareness, the middle finger, the cringe, the cry, the “here’s my raw nerve, baby. Here’s my beating heart,” the stiletto in the stiletto. What an ear, what a voice. Man, what a woman.

I wanted to love it, but feel bad because I think I got too excited when I saw it was the pick for the day and overhyped myself. Just a few minutes of that’s energy she channels is enough for four stars in my book though.

First time really giving Amy the proper time, and boy did she deserve the time. While I didn't find a particular song that jumped head and shoulders over the rest, all were quality, and worth more time. 4.7

i mean its okay. i got bored midway through because its so repetitive. i love her sound though!
