Reviews (page 4 of 13)
Though I must admit, most of the content isn't something that really resonates with me, she is very talented, has a distinct sound and at least some of the songs sound great to my ears.
Have had this album on cd for a while and had never actually listened to it all the way. Good album.
Album muito bem construído, flertando com Jazz, Pop e Blues.
Not what I was expecting. I've never listened to her before, and now I'm sad I haven't. Wonderful voice, intricate accompaniment, nice pacing. For those criticizing her voice, go listen to Dance Monkey.
Very underrated compared to Back to Black. Dare I say, might even like it better
A beautiful, unique voice. This is Amy before her big breakthrough.
Getting both Amy Winehouse back to back days is a pleasant surprise! Own this album on vinyl so very familiar with this one already. Unpopular opinion but I prefer this one to Back to Black, prefer the jazzy sound of this one to the 60s girl group sound on her follow up
Even the weaker songs are elevated to four star status by her unique voice. It reminds me of the girl groups from the early 60s. This will definitely go on my playlist.
The influence from 60's girl groups is definitely heard. Sounds a lot like 60's soul. Overall a pretty good album, but it's not my favorite.
Yeah so good, such an amazing voice. Some songs I knew and others I didn't, I liked it on the whole but it felt a little stretched at an hours' length.
Classic and slapper of an album
Generational talent taken far too soon. Minus one star from this dyke for the aggressive heterosexuality of it all
Just one of the best raw voices in jazz and soul
Kinda liked it. Can't decide if I love her voice or just like it. Very good song writer either way.
this album has some of my fav amy songs but it isn’t my fav amy album … so 4 stars
Listened to this before her 2nd LP. Fantastic voice and love the overall vibe of this record. Great Debut, timeless music
looove her this is such an underrated album
Such a unique and beautiful voice. The album went on a bit long, but it is one I would gladly give another listen.
I think you have to look at this in context of what it was when it came out and to accept that it’s no back to black. It’s a solid if not spectacular debut album, which never gets anywhere near the highs of BTB. Still it’s fun enough, and I particularly enjoyed the ska influenced track. A generous four feels right as I think a three would be a little too harsh.
Good album, loved the jazz vibes. Take The Box was my song of the album and my best first listen with Fuck Me Pumps and Moody’s Mood For Love/Teo Licks being my other highlights
such a great snapshot of the early 2000s. also a great reminder if you don’t find Amy Winehouse attractive she will think you’re gay. Mr. Magic get stuck in my head all the time
Woah what the heck, so good. That Nas sample... Fav tracks: Intro, You Sent Me Flying, In My Bed. RYM: N Saved a song: Y
The voice we all love from "Back to Black" is already there, and she really does have the perfect voice for the music she makes. It's got great jazz instrumentation with a lot of flute and I feel the arrangements are some of the strongest parts of the album. Sure the lyrics are very cheeky and a little singular, but she was 19! Great record.
8/10 Amy's vocals are really amazing here. Definitely a strong debut.
I know everyone likes Amy's black album but this one hits harder for me. Sure 50s-60s standards are great but the Jazz singing here is so good that I couldn't help but be focused on it and nothing else. What an amazing troubled soul she was
Love Amy Winehouse
It's not Amy's masterpiece, but it's a stunning debut.
What a debut album! excellent lounge singing - without her later angst! A joy! listened 2x in a row
I probably wouldn't like her as a person. But I get how incredible is this as a debut album, with the lyrics and her voice. It's powerful, and despite feeling strongly about some of the things, it's proof of the intensity and honesty of her experiences.
4,5
Rest in power queen.
I mean, Amy's voice is obviously incredible and I love the sound. I always have to be in a certain mood for her style though, so some of these are hit and some are miss. She was so cheeky though, decent few lines got smiles out of me on this listen!
good
Under appreciated artist by me Fuck me pumps was a vibe
Amy's debut
Im liking this more than I thought I would, ngl. Its like a jazzier Lauryn Hill. 7/10
Love the vibes 4/5
Really good. Didnt realise how influential her sound was, definately a lot of artists since have been inspired
No tracks really stood out but Amy Winehouse could sing me an eviction notice and I'd give it at least 3 stars.
gut 👍
Great album. Feels a lot jazzier than BTB. I love her dry wit on this record.
Amazing experiencie
super chill
Melhor do álbum: "(There is) No Greater Love". Pior do álbum: "Amy Amy Amy".
She is the best, I miss her so much. It's a very good album, i know it goes without saying but her voice is ridiculous. Amy Amy Amy is a lovely tuene
Better then I expected
Very solid debut, absolutely fantastic voice and personality that bleeds through the music. Love love love
There are times where the lyrics on this album wind me up. I also think that, were it not for her tragic death, Amy Winehouse wouldn't be as highly regarded as she is. That said, I enjoyed the music and her voice and overall the album deserves a 4.
I liked this one
A solid debut. I think I prefer Back To Black (other than "Rehab" - never liked that song) over this one, but that's not a criticism.
Less bombastic than Back to Black. It seems wrong to say that an album with heavy-ish lyrical content is a breezy jazzy listen, but that was my lasting impression. Cut a few tracks and this album would land in my regular rotation. 4/5
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH would do four and a half if i could. not a no skip album but very very good.
I love her voice and the album has good attitude to it. Also the transition between There is no Greater Love and In my Bed was crazy.
i have no idea how many times i listened to this album my senior year of high school (I discovered it maybe a year after she died), but it was as lot, and my love for this record then will positively influence my rating of it now; there is no helping this. i love what amy winehouse was doing. this album has such a reverence for 50s/60s jazz and pop singers while being uniquely her own, and so few artists are able to do this. adele, probably. off the top, i'm thinking of few other as-powerful female vocalists who are shaking things up and leaving indelible impressions on the amorphous, always-growing genre. i mean, go listen to "Take The Box" and tell me who else sounds this fucking cool in 2026. not just *good*, but fucking *cool*, dude. so many styles covered here, and there's so so so much to love. big fan of the sax inclusion in "In My Bed", and the intro could have been a collab between Winehouse and Fitzgerald had they been alive at the same time. probably, she should have gone to rehab. i have to think we'd still be listening to new music from amy winehouse if she'd survived beyond 2011.
She just had that voice man. I am probably more of a fan of her later work, but this was such a fun listen.
Considering I’m pretty sure this was Amy’s first album it is very well made. Incredible voice but loses a star cause her music just is not my cup of tea. Sorry Amy Rip 🪦💔
RIP Amy. I’m sure you would’ve continued to be a riot, even in this day and age. Truly one of the greatest voices of the 2000s.
His voice is just so unmatched. Not my usual genre, and I really only think I’d listen again under specific circumstances, but I can’t deny just how good her work was. Nice to have this album to turn to when I decide I need it.
amy the goat. havent listened to this album all the way through in years and that’s a crying shame - it is SO good. truly one of a kind
A harrowing tale of dysfunctional relationships and emotional nihilism. What makes it even more bleak is that this is the debut album of a 19-year old, and it's not a beginning of any sort, it's self-annihilation already at terminal velocity and she seems to know it.
8/10
It would have been wonderful to see what Amu might have accomplished if she wasn't such a tragically flawed human being. Beautiful first album.
really liked this 8.75/10
What a voice
Very underrated! I heard Back To Black before started this project and I wasnt really impressed with it, so color me surprised in seeing how much range Amy's had, from Scat Singing to Jazz to regular Pop! It's a shame she went out so ugly, she barely hit her prime...
Great find. I love Back to Black, but never listened to Frank before. Excellent band. Love the track order, funky, complex songs.
A playful and funny, yet haunting and devastating at times, a timeless record. It took Amy Winehouse 3 or 4 years to make this; I feel like it reveals the complex and experiential side to her artistry, and each time I listen, I hear a different message from her soul.
It's crazy how much the vocals carry the instrumental on this album. They do just enough to keep me happy while leaving plenty of room for accompanying the lead and giving Amy space to completely crush this. It's catchy and dynamic. Doesn't try too hard. It's just good. It's smooth, soulful, jazzy, funky, and more importantly purposeful. The lyrics are clever, and the performance is great. The thing that brings it down is it can be a little bit one note at times (but that note is *really* good) and it runs just a bit too long. It goes a little more diverse with songs like In My Bed and Help Yourself, I just wish it did more of that cuz those moments are really good. Also Help Yourself is so good, maybe best track on the entire record, how is it not on Spotify? I also wish Cherry was it's own track, it's a fun little moment. 4.2/5
Listened while walking and playing Ball x Pit. Really liked her vocals and lyrics. Only ever heard Rehab before this and was really impressed. A modern take on a classic genre.
Liked this more than I thought I would!
Love her voice. Love the jazzy bluesy of it. Tragic story.
They often say that history repeats and that's especially true with popular music. Just like Janis Joplin wowed the world with her inimitable vocals and controversial lifestyle in the 1960s, Amy Winehouse did much the same in the 2000s, where her controversial personal life became just as storied as her generational talent. 'Frank' introduced the world to Winehouse's jazz-rich vocals and confessional lyrics, and given she was only 19 at the time of recording, it's a sensationally mature record that evokes a more seasoned vocalist with plenty of life experience already. Not unlike Lily Allen, Winehouse's lyrics are rather biting and blunt confessional tales of love, loss and life, however Winehouse's voice possesses a far greater range and can adopt a variety of different styles, including jazz, soul, R&B and even some dabbles with hip hop. It all depends on what her voice decides to do. There's the more standard jazz numbers (Stronger Than Me, F*** Me Pumps, (There Is) No Greater Love)), but Winehouse also tries quicker, almost rapped, vocal passages (Moody's Mood For Love, In My Bed). There's no shortage of variety on 'Frank'. It's just sad that Winehouse's life capitulated out of control after this record, as her public battles with alcohol and drug abuse and mental illness continued to overshadowed her indelible gift for music. I don't mince my words that history repeats itself in popular music. Winehouse's demise was spookily similar to Joplin's, fiercely unique voices brought undone by self-destruction at the all-too-young age of 27. It's sad really, because growing up, I don't remember Winehouse being revered for her music, but I do remember the tabloid press sharing her latest public misdemeanour, whether it be public intoxication, bloodied toes, brusied face or her propensity for violent outbursts. One can't help but deduce that the constant media pressure was a contributing factor in her demise, especially given the media had become faster and more vicious by the 2000s. Thankfully, we still have two great albums to remember Winehouse by, and despite her life being cut cruelly short, she earned her reputation as a generational talent. Best songs: Stronger Than Me, F*** Me Pumps, In My Bed, October Song, What Is It About Men
I can see why others love Amy’s music. It’s great for what it is but passes me by somewhat.
This is Amy doing Amy things, which is pretty damn amazing. Forest feel like the masterpiece that is Back to Black. It feels more like a collection of songs but that’s still pretty entertaining. In My Bed featured the NAS Made You Look beat and that was a real surprise. Pretty cool actually. She was an innovator for sure. RIP Amy.
Very good but for me nowhere near as good as Back To Black.
Amy sure can sing. This is a great album to have on, and just have it wrap around you. She’s strong, sexy, and hits all the right things with this album.
I always kind of avoided Amy winehouse in the past. I'm not sure why and I'm realizing now that was a big mistake. She has an absolutely amazing sound. Not a single song on here that I recognized, but I love the whole thing as a package.
Dupe
sympa de ouf ! je kiffe bien les beats tranquilles comme ça + belle voix etc
Lots of great songwriting and some interesting sonic textures. I have slept on this album for so many years!
So excited to get a female artist! I was familiar with Back to Blacj, but not this one. Really good
I've known of Amy Winehouse's reputation as a great talent gone too soon, but hadn't listened to any of her material before. God DAMN, what a voice, what impeccable jazz chops and phrasing filtered through an R&B filter and a bad attitude. The very jazzy backing tracks are produced to sound like samples even though most of them were performed live. Favorite tracks are probably "Pumps" and "Help Yourself". It's not an album I'd deliberately put on to listen to very often, but it definitely proves Winehouse's extraordinary talent. I wish we'd been able to hear more of what she would have been capable of.
This is a bit underpowered since it is Christmas Eve. I kinda missed the whole Amy Winehoise moment in pop culture… I heard the hits but did not understand the devotion to her or how deeply folks felt the loss when she died. I didn’t do the deep dive I might have preferred in response to getting this album but I do hear how much of a storyteller she is, and an unflinching one, which I love in a songwriter. I’ll return to it and her other work.
8 Such a nice mix of stuff in here and so many bangers I wish it was longer
Wollte ich mir eh schon lange mal anhören, guter tobak mit stil und humor
This is not my sound, this is not my style - I feel like I need a brandy and a cigar. But in the face of amazing talent and awesome ability, one has to recognize, and for that, even though I'd never choose to listen again, I'll give it a four.
Really good ! Listening to the lyrics I discovered a new side of her music, with some Sabrina Carpenter vibes in the way she talks about men, kinda ? Favorite : Fuck me pumps
Glad I finally took a listen to Amy Winehouse. Another former blind spot. I get it; she has a very smooth jazz, r&b-colored sound that is pretty distinct. I have a feeling I might be returning to this one.
Another album from Amy Winehouse. As same rhythm and voice as her first album, but doesn’t make me feel boring.
I miss Amy. Truly wonder where her career would have gone. Frank stands out for its more modern production compared to B2B. The shift to working with Ronson & the Motown-style arrangements really brought her vocal performance alive and feel more iconically her, but Frank feels more intimate and raw. Standout track I Heard Love Is Blind.
Reminds me of the 90s and That's So Ginger. Smooth
I was already familiar with some of the tracks on this album. It is very good overall
To be frank, its not as good as back to black, but its still awesome
sort of adjacent to 24/7 anime hiphop beats to chill and study and game to but with a very classy sheen on it. like, classy trashy. somewhere between "frank sinatra crooning for mobsters" and "fuck me pumps". in a good way. favorite song is Moody's Mood For Love / Teo Licks
Obvious debut album. Naive lyrics but she's got the voice.
Oh look, it’s another tragic artist that just so happened to blow me away with how good they were. Why do the most talented people have to die so early? It’s such a depressing reality of life. Admittedly, the only thing I knew about Amy Winehouse going into this album was that she died, and it was a huge story at the time. No idea how she sounded before listening to this, as I’d never really sat down and listened to an Amy Winehouse song before. When I saw the genres listed as Soul, Jazz and Rock, I really didn’t have a clue what I was going to be in for here. What a unique and catchy style of music this was. After listening to it, yeah, I can clearly hear elements of all 3. Her singing style is very reminiscent of Soul, the instruments are very Jazzy, and most of the songs on the album clearly have some Rock focus as well. That just about covers all 3. The only thing keeping this album from a 5 star rating is one of the most common issues I have with albums, the filler. It’s NEVER an issue here, but some of the songs are just here to extend the album a bit and end up being a little forgettable. Now, I ended up adding 4 songs to my playlist from this album, which was also way more than I expected. My favorites here are “Intro / Stronger Than Me”, “In My Bed”, “ What Is It About Men”, and my personal favorite, “Amy Amy Amy”. This was an album that immediately hooked me during the first listen. Holy shit her voice was on fire on this album, which also happened to be her debut. It was catchy, smooth, sexy, and easily replayable from top to bottom, filler included. This one is a solid 4.8/5. Notably, this album does not include any of her Top 10 songs on Spotify. A grand majority of them, including her Top 6 songs, are on her next album, Back To Black. That album is also on the list. If it’s as good as the listen count implies, we’re looking at a very solid chance that one gets a 5 star rating from me. I’m going to specifically refrain listening to it so whenever it gets rolled I can get excited about it popping up here. What else can I say? Amy, Amy, Amy, I’m a new fan of yours.
This album isn't as big and flashy as Back to Black, nor does it have the same caliber of hooks and melodies, but I felt like it was more thoughtful and intimate.
I haven't spent much time with this, and it's far more R&B-tinged than I remembered. I think I actually prefer this to her massive follow-up, though probably just because that one got overplayed.
Every time one of her albums comes up I am pleasantly surprised. She sounds a lot like Billie Holiday on this one.
32/1089 хороший, тем более учитывая что я не очень жалую такой жанр
хороший лайтовый не нагружающий альбомчик
This was close to a 5 for me, such an untouchable voice, such heart and feeling, and thing that fell short was some of the songwriting.
"Stronger Than Me", especially with the video, sure resonated with me about both of my relationships.
Qualms over the contents of the lyrics are definitely valid, but I do love Amy Winehouse's voice. Favorite Songs: Stronger Than Me, You Sent Me Flying High / Cherry
Some really nice stuff on here, with an amazing voice as expected. There are also some really weird transitions and some songs where it's clear that she hadn't really found her own sound yet. Past that it's perfectly enjoyable
Valerie isn't the be all end all
Solid album, easy to see how she got to be so well known. Love the switch up compared to previous albums too.
Þekkti ekki eitt einasta lag en gott grúv
Geggjað væb þarna. Skil af hverju hún varð fræg 🙏
Poor Amy… I think about her all the time.
Subtle and fun. The vocal subtlety alongside the rhythmic variety kept my head bopping almost the entire way through. Its crazy to listen to this is nearly 2026, and just how obvious her influence on women’s vocals is now.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm
Enjoyed listening to a great voice for once
Frank may not be the culture-shifting smash hit that was Back to Black, but represents the other side of Amy Winehouse: her original initial musical self with much more inflection of jazz (the R&B and Soul were always there, the jazz was toned down a bit on BtB). Given her short career and enormous impact that followed (RIP), I suppose it's fair that Frank is in the 1001+ album list, since Amy was a real, genuine talent. Especially in the UK, where those kinds of gravelly soul singers are harder to find then say, the American South. It's not fun to play what-if's, but man Amy could be as big as Taylor if it weren't for the alcohol and other vices.
I know it's been said millions of times, but damn what a voice. 4/5
A fun foray into spacey jazz
I expected to be pretty indifferent to this album, but actually ended up really enjoying it. Hadn't really gone beyond the surface of Amy Winehouse, but she has some good stuff R&B/soul stuff. Will definitely listen in the future.
I like this, it's jazzy and bluesy. I love Amy Winehouse's voice. The album is not perfect to be sure. It is patchy, it was written by a 19year old after all. But, every now and then you get glimpses of the artist that she was becoming.
Frank, pass me the pork roll egg and cheese if you please
Soulful and cool. Reminded me of Maralisa
Beautiful voice! Not my style, but, if i'm in the right mood, the album goes down well! Also, it is too good to be a debut album... 'Intro' is just - wow. I also liked 'October Song' and 'Know you Now'. 'You're just a little booooy, underneath that haaaat..."
Man, what a talent we lost here. I don’t listen to her stuff very often but damn was she good. Soul. Character. Poetry. She had it all. Solid start to her too short lived career.
Although I did not know any oft the songs I liked this Ablum quite a lot. She had a great voice
Impressive album
Fun, sleazy and honest in its cynicism. Yet her rendition of There Is No Greater Love is so beautiful, you feel there may have still been a romantic somewhere underneath.
Excellent production, incredible lyrics, and one of a kind vocal delivery.
Poor Amy. So talented
I think I liked this one a bit better than Back to Black, it's more my style. Not entirely, but still very nice to listen to, love the jazzy and soul elements and her voice of course.
Solid 3.5 but I feel 4 is going too high
So sleazy, sultry, and crass. Probably the least “timeless” of her albums, it’s sooooo 2000s. Doesn’t take itself too seriously. So much to love.
Dug this.
I mean, she's a beast. Great first record.
Favourite track: (There is) No Greater Love
Stronger than me is pretty homophobic actually. F me Pumps a bit sexist, but honest. I love Amy, but this wasn’t as good as I remembered. Her masterpiece is Back to Black, but this does showcase her talent. I wish she could have stayed with us.
Less produced and more raw then Back To Black actually make this s better album. They work well as a paired listening.
Soulful, wonderful to listen to. Such a shame she went too soon.
Many people know Amy for the Back to Black album and I’m the same. I’ve heard a few of these songs before but listening to the whole Frank album I think she’s much better than people remember. Past all the drug and alcohol abuse she could have had a massive musical longevity. This is a beautiful album musically and vocally. This is very good.
While I don't like this album quite as much as Back to Black, its still an incredibly good work of art
A remarkably impressive debut from one of the premiere, and most tragic, vocal talents of our time. While it lacks the edge and assured confidence of “Back To Black”, the R&B influenced cocktail jazz rhythms have their own unique appeal, and Winehouse’s potential as a songwriter is evident. Standout original tracks include “F Me Pumps”, “In My Bed”, and “Take The Box.” Back To Black is probably a stronger album altogether, but this is an astounding statement from someone so young.
I’ll be honest, this album doesn’t deserve to be on the list. It’s not even that this album is bad, but it just isn’t polished enough. Back to Black rightfully is on this list, but this is just flat out Brit bias. This list too often ignores many black R&B artists, especially women. This album being on here is proof of that. 3.75 / 5
Maybe it's hindsight being 20/20, but I hear the doom in this. An absolute comet from the blue, of re-imagined music from another age, delivered with unearthly power and haunted by addiction and loss. Where was there to go from here? Was there ever any chance of her settling into some version of "My Way" and enjoying a career maturity?
Great album to listen to with your partner while having a drink and making dinner together 👍
Solid stuff, smooth and sultry. Hard to believe she was just 20 when this was made.
The voice is obviously incredible, but no song really stood out as a must relisten to me. A strong 3.7.
A great artist with a great voice. Not my favorite album from her but I still enjoy most of the songs enough to listen through it more than once.
So much potential on this album.
4,5
Very jazzy. I like it, even knowing what comes later. Frankly, no pun intended, this is probably one of the best British pop albums out there. 4 solid stars.
Very enjoyable. Amazing smokey voice.
Jazzy pop
Always thought she was a tad overrated so was suprised by how much I liked this.Great, jazzy arrangements and a voice that bleeds emotion
She's one of the best vocalists ever. Every recording of her's is a treasure.
Interesting view into early Winehouse before Back to Black album blew up.
3.7 2x catch up 10/1, good stuff
Amy with no tattoos or drug problems? Those things are like half of her identity
Surprised at how jazzy this is. Amy really fit in the whole jazz scene, it's easy for her pop tracks to overshadow her being much more into that style. Really enjoyed it.
A really good album, I liked the Intro, In My Bed, Amy Amy Amy and Help Yourself the most.
Anyone who can sing like this at the age of 19 is a prodigy. Like many artists, potential denied due to rocka and roll (okay Jazz) lifestyle. Yes, at points she is obviously channeling Jazz standards, especially Fitzgerald. However, she always has a unique spin that is her own. The only thing that is strange is that she was to break into the world of pop following this recording. In any event, this is a fantastic album. Definitely something I'll be returning to in the future!
I love her voice. Classic style, but then she tries to make it modern with some of the language, which is actually off putting it’s just incongruous with the style of music she was putting out.
Another album to make me wish I'd listened to more Amy when she was with us. She blends so many different styles in a lovely mix, and her songwriting is honest and, well, frank. It's a very good collection of songs.
Genre: Neo-Soul This thing is bumpin’, groovin’, smooth like butta, and everything else in between. Amy does a fantastic job over some really great tracks, both with live vocal-jazz type production or with big 808 drums underneath. She soared. Such a loss of talent, but the body of work she left us is very good. She will be respected and revered for years to come. 4/5
I have this album in my library. I like it.
A good listen, but not mind blowing. She saved that for the next record. H’ll of a voice, though.
Good
Amazing Album. Not my favorite from Amy Winehouse, but still a very good one. For me this is a 8.5
It's hard not to enjoy an Amy Winehouse song in my opinion. She could sing Mein Kampf and make it sound good. Some of the content feels dated (Stronger than Me) but it's hard to care when she's singing so beautifully.
An okay album, not for my purposes.
I've heard "Rehab" plenty and although a great song, it's just become stale for me. Listening to Frank reenergized my fondness for Amy Winehouse. The predecessor to Back to Black feels a lot less pop and more connected to the sounds of old. But let's be clear, this is not just some throwback gimmick. The jazz ensemble introduces hip-hop beats and Amy provides the attitude to give this album a modern swagger. Winehouse has an incredible ability to swing from sharp and biting to gorgeous and soulful and back again. Fifteen tracks does seem lengthy but it sweeps by, especially if played in the background while doing chores or cooking dinner. This album made me realize that Amy was kind of the pop music transition from the era of Britney to the era of Gaga. It's a shame her spotlight was so short lived.
It’s kind of sad revisiting Amy Winehouse after so long. Just an incredible talent, snuffed out, and you can’t help but wonder what she’d sound like if she were still going today. Winehouse, who was just 20 when this album came out, shows a remarkable candor in writing about relationships, sexual dynamics and even clubbing, all paired with her incredible voice. “No Greater Love” sounds like Ella Fitzgerald for the 21st century, while I love the bluntly honest storytelling of “Fuck Me Pumps.” There is much to recommend this album, but a few songs don’t quite rise to the level, and overall I think Back To Black is her strongest work, with better and more consistent songwriting and arrangements.
Great debut, hinting at the masterpiece that Back to Black would be.
Didn’t give this the attention it deserved when I started listening to it. This is just vibes all the way thru, really liked it.
Top, bell'album
stronger than me isch schomol hammer geil, super neo soul sie singt insane, mega coole beat au. you sent me flying super geils klavier. cherry au cute yooo, mega mega jazz und sie singt mega snarky. moody moody geily. i like. es so traditionelle jazz hää. aso so bossa type. there is no greater love au meega jobim ich liebs?? in my bed meeega geils spiel zwüsched melodie und chords UFFFF october song slappt hert meega ihren take uf jazz standards, sie macht lullaby of birdland reference!! geeil insgesamt isches nume es vieri wells scho nöd so mega hitted, sehr zruckhaltend findi. mister magic cover fantastisch. alles andere au würkli geil, aber s hilft halt nöd dass back to black so insane guet isch
A decent, but not great, neo-soul album. Some lyrics aged poorly, and the rest is nowhere near as special as I have been led to believe. A little too long, though.
Very impressive but not as good as back to black.
She has a great voice and I enjoyed her jazz vibe. She certainly was channeling Frank on this album. A bit more even kill than her later albums.
I hear a lot more Billy Holliday than Sinatra on this. don't think it's as strong as Back to Black, but not surprising since it's her 1st album. still enjoyed it
vocals. soul. pain.
Эта женщина была чёрной, я не поведусь на мировую ложь!
Good overall, she clearly hadn't hit her prime yet but it's a fun album.
Great voice. Much better than her other record.
Stærkt soul album. Men en anelse mindre raffineret end back to black.
Vibey album with jazzy pop sounds. Favorite track: Mr Magic other picks: F me pumps, in my bed, what of it about men
Good album. Never listened to before.
low 4 for the culture
One thing I hafta wonder is, "Do I define Amy Winehouse too hard by 'Back To Black'?" Y'know, not just her sound, but everything around it: up to and including, yes, her death. Really, I wonder if I put too much focus on it. I mean, I try to stand up for her ("She was treated so harshly by the media when she was alive, and often for no good reason"), but it always ends up being through the lens that she died ("when she was alive"). There must be more to Amy Winehouse than this one very, very good album. And as it turns out, there is. Point of fact that is that 'Back To Black' isn't Amy Winehouse's only album — it's her **second**. Though, I sort of don't blame myself too much for forgetting that Amy isn't a one-album wonder. I mean, how often do people even bring her debut, "Frank'? That thing doesn't have "Rehab"~! But seriously, Amy Winehouse's debut album. I must admit, it didn't really sound like I'd expected it to. There's some jazzy instrumentation here and there, and of course Amy's belt is as it always was, but overall it winds up sounding pretty contemporary to 2003. There's way more R&B in here than I would've thought — and she don't sound half bad over it, y'know? Now, I can't speak to Amy as a lyricist too much. Her work is often very personal and I'm simply not up on the Winehouse "lore" too much to be able to accurately dissect it. Not that I wanna be, anyway; I ain't much of a fan of when "lore" like that is required. I will say, it does come true to its title. This is an honest album, unafraid of not always presenting herself in the best light. I wind up particularly thinking about the song "What Is It About Men", where she wonders aloud why exactly she is the way she is and why it's so hard for her to change. Or, y'know, there's "I Heard That Love Is Blind", where she's only barely making excuses for cheating on a partner. I've read some reviews on this website that get all **AGHAST** that Amy would dare portray herself this way, but knowing what I know (and I'll admit I should know more), I think it's nice that she's trying to be as truthful as she can on record. That takes some guts, y'know? But back to the sound of this thing: the modernness of it all. Being real, I'm not too hot on it. Sure, it's not **bad** — but 'Back To Black', **that's** the sound I'm into. I took a moment to listen to just the title track after this record, and it held me way better than any song on here could. Generally, I'm just a sucker for that modernized retro shit. And, I mean, I really like knowing that Amy had more range in genre. Heck, "In My Bed" has a sample of "Apache" — goodness, a **sample**. I dig that! But, eh, matters of taste and all, y'know. Plus, I wanna make a quick note about this thing's length. I don't think it **really** needed those two extra tracks after the outro? Y'know, what were originally hidden tracks on the CD release. They're sort of overkill, if you ask me. When I got to them I could suddenly feel the album's length — and it's not even that long! But, I'unno, I could've done without the little extra. Above either of those things, though, I largely find myself just incredibly impressed that this album was made when she was only 19. 19! And she's singing like that? And writing like this? It's a little remarkable to think about. I mean, I always knew she was young and talented, but she wasn't even in her 20s yet when this album was made? That's crazy. Honestly now. What was **I** doing when I was 19? Sure as heck not anything on the quality level of this, no sir. So ... yeah. That's about all I hafta say about 'Frank'. I'm not over the moon for it in the way I was for 'Back To Black', but it's nice to remember that it exists. It's nice to remember that there's more to Amy than just 'Back To Black'. Hopefully I won't forget it as easily as I have before. It'd only be fair to not.
starts off with a jazzy 40s vibe progresses to harder and edgier empty glasses with cigarette butts in them
She has such a great voice, one forgets she's still a teenager on this album. While the music style & delivery vs the lyrics can seem a little incongruous, you can't deny the talent.
Great sultry jazzy bluezy album
Great.
Miss you babe
In My Bed is a masterpiece
Noice
fire i loved it.
I don’t typically enjoy vocal jazz, however, Amy is the exception. This is a 4⭐️ for me. I enjoy Back to Black more, but both are great.
Actually didn’t know a load of this. Will definitely relisten
damn was he nice
She was class. I don't necessarily like her songs that much though, I'm not that old a soul. Deserves 100% to be in the list though and she was so talented.
So once you know the Amy Winehouse story (or at least what's out there) -- this is a fascinating collage of the road to self-destruction. She was at public about her need to collapse herself as any artist that I can remember aside from Cobain. She's an awesome talent. I hope she and Janis are harmonizing in the afterlife.
Is it so wrong to say that I think this blows Back to Black out of the water. 3.5/5
What a voice
It was nice, appreciate the suggestion
This album was fantastic. A mix of a lot of genres and it really works. None of the hits, but it had a really vibe to it that just made the entire thing seem like a breathe of fresh air.
Frankly Four
7/10
Love this album. My first time listening to Amy Winehouse and I loved the experience. Her sound on here is excellent. I love the way she incorporates her singing and it is over the top of the beats etc. I’ll need to adventure more into her other albums.
loveeee amy!!!! not as good as back to black but still so great to hear her voice and lyrics!
Don't you know you supposed to be the man?
Oh man, I have been sleeping on Amy Winehouse! Only song I'd heard of hers was Rehab and it's a dud, so I never really got into her more. I really should have. Started out shaky with Stronger Than Me, but then it picked up. You Sent Me Flying was very smooth, Fuck Me Pumps was nice and chill. In My Bed had some wonderful RnB vibes, as did Take The Box. And Amy Amy Amy was a total blast. Last few songs kind of die down a bit, but overall it was a fun album to hear. Best song: Amy Amy Amy
She's got a voice, that's for sure
Not as good as back to black, but still an excellent album
This is a great album. You can really hear her love for jazz and those old-school crooners in that album—it’s like she’s channeling a smoky late-night club vibe but with her own raw, modern twist. Tracks like "Stronger Than Me" and "Take the Box" have that playful swing, while "Moody’s Mood for Love" feels straight out of a classic jazz set. This is lovely and is definitely on my shopping list.
i spent way too long not listening to Amy Winehouse. Great jazz/soul album with so many moving tracks.
The start of the short career of a huge talent! There are a few duds here beside many great tunes.
This one is Winehouse's first studio album, which doesn't have a lot of the hits I'm familiar with at least. But the sound of it is pretty much the same as her hits, which is pleasant for me. There isn't any filler for the most part, and the songs are nice sound, showcasing her unique voice. 4/5
Easy 4 stars. Very good album. Great getting paperwork done album. No need to skip
She is a legend. Gone too young. So sad the way her career ended. I truly have never heard of this album by her. I know of her other albums but not this one. I love this music. Perfect for a hectic Monday morning.
Really solid and one step closer to jazz with that crazy scat at the start
I haven’t actually listened to an Amy winehouse album in full, and this one wasn’t exactly my top priority, but it was very solid. It begins to drag in the middle but starts and ends very well
this shit slaps! i can’t wait to watch Amy live.
What a delightful album. I loved when she sang about lady boys
Frank named after Frank Sinatra and the frankness of her lyrics is a jazz album heavily influenced by jazz vocalist like Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington and countless other jazz singers from the 1940s & 1950s. It's a solid album, her vocals are spot on, the lyrics are often witty and charming, everything works but I often found myself with that 'heard it all before' feeling and that's because it's so indebted to past singers and the past in general to the point where I found myself wondering why I wasn't just listening Billie Holiday instead or whoever. I imagine it will introduced a lot of people to some of the greats of the past as The Stray Cats had done a couple decades earlier with early rock n roll music and that's great, I'm a fan of Winehouse and The Stray Cats, I love retro sounds, but I could just throw on a number of albums and as good as she was, as good as The Stray Cats are neither is better than their influences, neither brings much new to the table and neither are essential listening though I will say that I like The Stray Cats more and that's likely because I like stuff like Gene Vincint and Eddie Cochran more than the classic torch singers of the 1940s and 1950s. I do realize that to many listeners Frank will be the only jazz vocal album they will ever own just like Rant n Rave with The Stray Cats will be the only rockabilly album they will ever own and that's fine both are great albums & who knows maybe some will go on to explore and dig deeper and if they don't well at least they are hearing some solid music & having fun. Musical cosplaying on vinyl for extra authenticity, I suppose.
First time really listening to Amy Winehouse. What an incredible voice.
Her voice is insane, like truly incredible!
The Wolf of Wall Street 8/10
7/10 This was an enjoyable listen. I felt like it got so close in places, but often didn't quite stick the landing for me. There was often a drifting quality to the songs that frequently didn't quite land on a hook that was completely satisfying. It was also a bit of a patchwork that didn't really flow that well through all of the styles it touched on and did seem to jump around quite a lot. There are big echoes of Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu in places (a very good thing), but the consistency wasn't quite there for the duration. It's clear she has a very special voice and understanding of how it works with the rest of the music, but this really has the hallmarks of a debut that she hasn't quite grabbed hold of her own style for quite yet. That being said, it's absolutely stacked with potential. Intro / Stronger Than Me - Not sure what the point of the into bit is. But the actual song is great. A nice blend of soul, jazz and hip-hop. She moves so nicely between smooth and biting on her vocal delivery. You Sent Me Flying / Cherry - the first half drifts around nicely enough, but doesn't really land anywhere until almost three minutes in. I feel like she over does the singing on this one and it gets a bit too warbly and 'look what I can do'. The Cherry bit is a nice little mini track. But why isn't it a separate track. Weird. Know You Now - This reminds me quite a lot of Lauryn Hill. I like it, and it has a good groove, but it doesn't quite land on something completely satisfying to me. Fuck Me Pumps - great track. It's fairly simple, but it has a quite naive, playful tone, which contrasts nicely with the lyrics. I Heard Love Is Blind - another one that's nice, but doesn't really find a solid hook for me. Moody's Mood For Love / Teo Licks - This one's a cover, so doesn't suffer from the same drifting nature of some of the others. I like the dub edge to the production, and it's just a satisfying jazz number. As with Cherry, I don't quite understand why these little inter-track nuggets aren't separated. (There Is) No Greater Love - A jazz standard. Really shows of her vocal in a more subtle way and she's not trying too hard on this one. Lovely. In My Bed - This is a good track. Much more hip-hop from a production point of view. Quite a lot of interesting instrumental elements too. Take The Box - another really nice track. The horns are used sparingly but beautifully. And she saves the vocal gymnastics for key moments. October Song - back to something with a bit more drive. It's another one that sort of drifts around a bit and never really lands on anything too hooky, but it is very good. What Is It About Men - this is quite reminiscent of Erykah Badu. I like it, but it's another drifter. I kept waiting for it to land on a solid chorus that never came along. Help Yourself - Hurrah, a chorus! This is really good. Light hearted, leaves good room for Amy to do her thing, but again, she doesn't overdo it. Really nice. Amy Amy Amy - another Erykah Badu-a-like. It's a good track, but another one that doesn't fully land on anything particularly special for me. Outro - It's just a bit of outro stuff. Nothing exciting. Brother - this has got a great groove to it and the vocal is top notch. Surprising that this is a hidden track as I'd say it was stronger track than a few on the main run. Mr Magic (Through The Smoke) - this is great. Hits all the right notes for me. Great groove, solid vocal, great hooks and a funky sax solo. Might be the best on the album and it's a real odd one to hide!
Not my cup of tea
Wow. Turns out I'm a big fan of Amy Winehouse. Incredibly strong and enjoyable vocals, and an eclectic mix of jazz, pop, funk, and electronic. Too bad she was a total wreck. But this album was not. Maybe a little repetitive/boring at moments, but otherwise a hit! Fave songs: - Intro / Stronger Than Me - Know You Now - Moody's Mood For Love / Teo Licks - (There Is) No Greater Love - In My Bed - Amy Amy Amy Side note: it's my understanding that "Fuck Me Pumps" is the most popular song on this album, to which I have to say...really?
Funky jazzy hiphop
Nice debut album. No hits but lots of potential (which became clear afterwards)
incredible voice, songs kinda blended into each other tho yk
Love the jazz influence
Love her
Superb. What a voice. Perfect Sunday morning listening. Didn't realise Nas - Made you Look was lifted straight from a Winehouse track!
She's dope
Strong production that really pushes her timeless and fearless vocals to match an old school R&B - modern pop hybrid. Man, it would've been a treat to see what music she would continue to generate!
That was great and I’m disappointed I never gave it a try before
very good album
Álbum muito bem feito com excelente canções. CVJ Neko.
J - 4/5 Best Track - "In My Bed" F - 4/5
Pretty good
So good, so angry. Love the whole edgy vibe with a classic voice
this is why i do this. finally listening to amy winehouse and it's really good! obviously distinctive and great vocals, songwriting also seems to be strong although I didn't dive into this too much, just 2-3 listens through while working. excited for back to black!
Listned Before? N This was very good. She was very talented and a tragic story. Enjoyable. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Fuck Me Pumps
Incredibly powerful vocal delivery. Some very personal and introspective song writing. Instrumental backing is varied and suits the song. In My Bed stands out, with a trip hop line sounds under a stand out vocal performance.
Solid 4.2 Amy x3 and fuck me pumps were faves
On yksi kovimmista albumeista. Todella mukavaa keinuvaa rytmiä. Vanhempaa Winehousea siis kyseessä.
gorgeous voice, love the jazzy vibe
Some of the production on this album is fantastic. Amy's lyrics whilst lacking the depth that make her second album incredible, are still great in places and overall a good album.
I liked it more than I thought I would. I liked the modern jazz twist.
good for work. Nice energy, but not to angaging, so it is easy to focus.
Nice album, made me want to go listen to back to black again
Nice vocals and great arrangements, what’s not to like. 4 stars
Amy has phenomemal voice. Not quite a 5 as it seems to drag a bit. The production on this is great
Enjoyed but clearly an early work.
Good
Very good debut album! 4/5
So used to listening to Back to Black, where she’s cemented as this fully matured tragic character. Wild to hear her as…a girl. Just a “normal”, funny, flirty, girl.
Velvet voice, gutter mouth. Smoky jazz with a hangover and story to match
I thoroughly enjoyed this listen - what a voice! In My Bed is a new favourite, and I wish this album had found its way into my life much sooner. It’s hard not to wonder what could have been had her life not ended so early, but the music she left behind is an incredible legacy.
I never jumped on the Winehouse train. No particular reason (except maybe everyone saying I should.) And that train passed me by. I really enjoyed listening to this, but understand the best was yet to come and end too soon. I’ll have to listen to more. I can see why this hooked everyone in 2003, it’s brash and swaggers in way that is super fun and I love the “diss tracks.”
I dig it. Seasoned voice. Provocative lyrics. Hard to believe any of this came from a 19 year old.
She's got an amazing voice, I love the vibe of her music and how groovy it is. Very soulful when she sings.
Fav: Mr. Magic Notes: Great voice. Good vibe on this previously unheard album for me.
I had a lot of fun with this one. The lyrics are clever, and good god that voice. Truly unique and generational. The musical style is fantastically paired with her voice.
Beautiful voice. Album is very enjoyable.
Beautiful amy
ovo je stvarno jako dobro! dajem četvorku unatoč tomu šta nije baš moj đir skroz
Really well constructed. Incredible vocals. Very much enjoyed but lacks some of the top hits from other albums. 7.5/10
This album is quintessential Amy Winehouse and I loved every moment of it. She was such a talent and light that was taken from this earth too soon. She left behind some great tunes that I will cherish forever. I would highly recommend others to check this album out!
Raw talent in that voice from the start. Sorry for the ending. RIP, Amy
Yeah, this is a fun album.
Absolute surprise, I really like this. Great production, good energy, a bit of raunch, and great vocals. Impressive! I don't think I would have liked this when it came out, but now I'm here for it.
Fascinating to hear a legend just getting started. Jazzy, sly, and raw.
RIP
I still prefer Back to Black, but I'm glad I gave it a listen. Loads of groovy songs on here
Still feel the same way about this as before — I love Amy.
'Always have to comfort you everyday / But that's what I need you to do, are you gay?' It's her voice, obviously - that innovative throwback that's so much the substance - but it's also the wit, the storytelling, the details, the getting back at in order to get back w/ 'Frank.' Sartorial concerns occupy her - 'your Beastie's tee,' 'your jeans are too tight,' 'The Moschino bra you bought me last Christmas' - but that's b/c life for Amy is in the facts and particulars. She sings w/ flexibility as well as precision, so that while she extends her lines like an r&b singer she has the composure of a jazz singer, which she is. 'Amy, Amy, Amy' (muted trumpet is killing on this one), where do I begin? Not as perfect as Back to Black, but she's invariably essential.
Groovy and fun! Not my style but Amy is an exceptional vocalist and lyricist.
7/10 Fantastic production and singing though not a consistency of strong and sticky songwriting I feel, it’s just a nice experience overall Frank
Still fresh! Great bests and fabulous voice
Haven't heard these songs before
i do not like that scat jazz, the rest is ok. 2005 starbucks vibes
Nice one

Day 34 - I love this album- not sure how I missed it before- thank you list! 4/5 #musicsky #albumsky
Album muito bom apesar de não ser o género que mais ouço. Vibes incríveis, voz incrível, ouvi apenas uma vez mas com certeza vou ouvir mais. Melhor música: "Intro / Stronger Than Me"
Jazzigt. Souligt. Låter rösten göra jobbet. Trevlig bakgrundsmusik.
Definitely something that would suit a lazy weekend day well. Listened through in its entirety. Chill vibes and up beat somewhat despite the content.
4.5/5 - very good album
Damn. I really thought I knew what Amy Winehouse sounded like from hearing a few cuts here and there in passing, but I've never sat down and really listened to it. It's something else. There's SO much going on here, lyrically and musically. This whole record oozes cool and she's was a badass in a way I didn't actually understand before listening to this record. Pumps, In My Bed were especially cool tracks
I ADORE THIS ALBUM
Why did I never listen to Any Winehouse before? Love it!
