Reviews (page 9 of 14)
Nice production, great sound and some catchy songs. But the whole thing just doesn't grip me
not really a fan of bruce yet
3/5
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would! A lot more funk 'n' blues than I expected from Bruce Springsteen, whom I must admit I never understand the hype for, outside of one or two classic hits. His vocals are just annoying at times, but powerful at others. The classic hits here hit extremely well though. Album kinda tapers out to nothing. Underwhelming finish.
not for me
Not my favorite album of his but a solid album. Would like to note that I loved the instrumentals.
I have never really been a Springsteen fan, but this is one of his better albums. High 3.
good
As a big time fan of fellow 70s/80s story song master Billy Joel one would think I would have an appreciation for Springsteen, but no matter how many times I've tried I just wasn't able to get into him. I feel like his music is always so serious... like he's constantly got the weight of the world on his shoulders. There's nothing wrong with that sort of song sometimes, but I wish there would be a bit more frivolity... like Billy Joel I guess.
I wasn't expecting myself to like this album as much as I did! Although it exceeded my expectations, it wasn't exactly mindblowing. 3.5 ⭐️
Not the biggest fan of Bruce. It was fine. I don’t think this is my style.
Ah, Bruce. Apparently a great live act. Respect the artist but most of this album skidded past me. Born to run is a classic song, worth it just to hear this.
I’ve always preferred Springsteen’s slower stuff: tracks like The River, The Streets of Philadelphia, I’m On Fire, all of Nebraska. Outside of the hits I find some of the rockier stuff starts to sound a bit samey. But there’s no denying this album is packed with energy and charisma. It makes me feel like a working class man in the 70s driving around New Jersey in a beaten up old truck. I knew I liked Thunder Road and the title track before listening - Backstreet and Meeting Across the River stand out as other favourites.
A lot more instrumental music than I’d like but I mostly enjoyed the songs
I've kind of never "got" Bruce but I do enjoy many of the songs now.
Not my favourite Springsteen album, but still good.
Gold album, just not for me
Not listened to much Springsteen before, only know the big ones. This was a very happy feel-good album! I really enjoyed listening to it and he is a great lyricist. I can imagine it hits different if you are American. Favourite song: Jungeland
Decent
Not really for me exactly but I still liked it.
eh not super memorable but def not bad
I can see where the killers got their influence.
Niet heel bijzonder maar opzich wel leuk. Grotendeels vrolijk door piano en trompetten
I really like Springsteen's voice, but I'd prefer it without all the peripheral instruments. The horns and piano made me visualize a smokey lounge, late at night, on many of the songs. I feel like all he needs to accompany him is an acoustic guitar. Fun album though.
what I sound like singing in the shower
Pretty solid. Born to Run (song) is for sure the best on the album. I think some Bruce Springsteen falls into chaotic good, most falls into chaotic neutral.
I did not add any of 8 songs to my collection. All 8 songs sounded to me exactly the same. There is certainly some musical conceptuality in this matter. Despite its great production quality songs sound blunt because of vocals. Not my type of music. Harmonically it’s too joyful for no reason.
Another solid album from the Boss.
it’s well written and interestingly composed but it’s just not my style of music.
Borders on Meatloaf's territory. Decent but not amazing. Lots of energy though.
Short decent album. Had one favorite.
I really like Tenth Avenue Freezeout No wonder Born to Run is popular it’s catchy! I also really liked the intro to Meeting Across the River
It has the potential to get higher stars ranking. This album feels very American to me. And seems like it is enjoyed mostly by men.
My dad is a big Bruce fan, so I grew up with this music. I like it, but it’s never become my music.
70s classic Really liked: born to run she’s the one
It's competently made and performed, it's just not really my thing. Faves: Born to Run, She's the One
The first listen I didn’t care at all. By the third time I liked it much more. Strong 3.
Bruce has always been one of those artists I've always wanted to spend more time listening to than I ever did, which I guess is what this project is for... Born to Run and Night are bangers, but I didn't really find much else stood out. Born in the USA still rates higher for me.
3.4 4x+ was hoping to like this more over several days of listening
Born to Run carried the album, altogether not too bad
This album was unexpectedly great. I really love most of the tracks in this body of work. From the fun and groovy Thunder road to the absolutely raw and vocally great Backstreet. The second half was also really great with Jungleroad and Meeting around the river being my top two Fav tracks: 1. Jungleroad 2. Meeting around the river 3. Thrunde road
Classic
Classic Rock Radio Tock
Enjoyed, but not as much as some of his other albums. Born to Run is a classic song and worth it for that alone.
Enjoyed the album - love the title track (but then it's the one I know). I feel it could grow to a four on more listens
The hit singles were decent enough, but overall kind of disappointed in this album, expected more from the boss
it's giving fleetwood mac and billy joel in one.
Good album for a live gig, but not Bruce's best in my opinion
I totally get the hype around Bruce the music makes you want to drive a car into the sunset. I dont know how much of it i could listen to but im sure it would slap live.
Ok. I love Bruce. This wasn’t my favorite, but Born to Run and Jungleland slap.
Times I listen to Bruce Springsteen 1. Tailgates 2. BBQs 3. When my father in law has the aux Understand the appeal, just not for me.
Good for its time 3.5
There's some good stuff in here :) I get why it's a classic even though I personally don't attach myself to it that much.
OG Mumblecore
Never listened to full album. Liked Meeting Across the River, great last track.
It was interesting, not my usual genre. I can definitely appreciate the authentic, rough sounds of the instruments.
Some great rock music but not better than born in the USA
3 stars
Today I've learnt that this style of music is called 'Heartland Rock' and that the genre is basically dominated by this man's work. And I think that's the most interesting thing about today, because I wasn't a big fan of the album. Well, maybe I exaggerated a little bit about the "interesting" part. If this record has something, is an ambitious instrumentation. Apart from your typical guitar, bass and drums of the rock genre, there are also trumpets, piano, bells and synth that are played in a way that it makes the album very detailed. It is also filled with quite parts that exploded into big and loud moments, and it also has a lot of crescendos. The thing is, these big moments, didn't really hit me. They certainly feel uplifting, but it wasn't like I was excited about them. In addition, after various listens, I'm feeling like the album is a bit formulaic, specially towards the end, when I felt like a was listening to the same structures again. To add insult to injury, I don't like Bruce Springteen's mumbling voice. Yes, he can also scream, but it is not like he is always screaming. A lot of the time he sings in his normal way, and that is what I don't like. In the end, is not a bad album. The songs have ambition and a sense of progression, which I really appreciate, but it is not my thing.
I really wanted to enjoy this album, and I’m still convinced at some point it’ll click and I’ll get more into it. But just not there after this listen.
This is pretty dull rock n' roll. I know I said Brothers in Arms is the ultimate Dad-rock album, but this one is pretty close. It's very inoffensive, but similarly anodyne. Can't see myself going back to it but also had a decent time while it was on. Leaning 3.
Have to say this feels ahead of its time for 1975 and I can understand why this is on the 100 list according to Apple. Just doesn’t quite get me going.
very familar. Too familar lol
Not the first time hearing Springsteen, but have never listened to much of his discography. This gave me a good feel for what Springsteen is all about.
Another incredible album cover. I go back and forth on Bruce constantly. He's a great songwriter, he has a unique voice that can strike me as inspiring or grating within a matter of minutes. I have a hard time with something that's SO damn earnest. The title track is an exemplar of this. I get why this is a classic to so many boomers out there, but to me it's also corny. I will never accept "strap your hands 'cross my engines" as an actual song lyric. It's just so dumb, so damn dumb. That said, the sentiment and the feeling evoked by "tramps like us/baby we were born to run" does move me. And Bruce clearly feels it too. The break down at the end of the song is great, the energy is great. I like a lot of the other tracks too. "Thunder Road" is derivative, IMO, of "Born to Run," but ok by me. "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" is a bop. "Backstreets" is good, so is "Jungleland." I'm a middle aged dude who loves rock music and baseball. But I was born maybe 15 years too late to worship Bruce.
Overall not a bad album but in my opinion there was no display of outstanding vocals, the beat of the songs wasn’t original and the lyrics weren’t anything awfully thought provoking.
Está bien hecho.
Not a fan of Springsteen, the only album I have on repeat is Nebraska. The sax on this album is amazing. Can't get used to the singing style of Springsteen. Respect the artist and this is an amazing project, but not my style.
Some songwriter write poetry and set it to music, some write songs and some write stories. Bruce writes stories that feel lived in, they feel real. It's impressive. I never understood the band. Like he went for a big band kind of sound then sings about a poor kid from the middle of nowhere. It works for some songs. I just never got it. Bruce is very hot or cold, his hit are out of this world, some of his deep cuts wiff for me. This isn't a bad album it just doesn't all land for me.
Loses points for sax
Okay album. But I personally am kinda bored listening to it. Production is phenomenal. I just dont ever find myself wanting to listen to Bruce Springsteen in general. "This song is NINE MINUTES LONG?!" I'd much rather be listening to Dire Straits. Stand out song is the title track "born to run".
springsteen is always like 30% less energetic than i need him to be. his song compositions are great, but i generally find myself bored by his vocal delivery.
Great
I wish he'd stop mumbling, its driving me crazy. Another album i thought I'd like more than I actually did.
Swung wildly between enthusiastic bops to forgettable yelling.
I know I am supposed to like this but I never really liked Bruce like some others do. I respect him hugely and I like some his songs.
Not bad, but pretty corny. For as much as this guy gets photographed holding a telecaster, it’s almost all piano driven.
Really, really not a fan of getting multiple Bruce Springsteen albums so close together. I still cannot get past his voice. Right, I will say that this album is certainly better than Born in the U.S.A. But not by much. (as well...please, Bruce, stop with "Born" albums). The songs here did feel pretty damn similar most of the time, but more just...boring. Jungleland was interesting, but felt like it went on for too long. Probably still my favourite from the album as a whole. As well, the titular Born to Run wasn't terrible. Second best. To summarise this, I still just dislike Springsteen. Haha.
Classic, not really for me. I understand the appeal, though.
Brooooooce
never been a big fan but also never really listened to anything other than a few big hits. ill check this shit out. if i had to litsen to clapton lol
Not my favorite album of his. I actually remember liking it more than I did on this listen. Like the large sound and emotion in the songs though. 3.5/5
Tiring. I listened to the bbc documentary about him, made me appreciate it a bit more but still feels hard work - saxaphone solos like christmas songs
Bruce should count his blessings that he has the E Street Band. I don't think he would be as legendary without them. They make his Elvis Bob Dylan workerman voice shine. It helps that he is a good songwriter, too. Max Weinberg is the best especially for his Conan days. The band just rips. BRUCE not so much. 3
I know this is a classic idk if it’s overplayed or all sounds similar but didn’t love it
Bruce Springsteen is everything electric Bob Dylan could have hoped to be. His signature Telecaster (arguably the best, but least cool, electric guitar ever produced) aids his working-class-every-man aesthetic and effortless cool. He’s a great storyteller, and all of the saxophone and keyboard solos demonstrate a selfless type of songwriting that I can respect - he doesn’t play either, but he knows the songs need them more than they need another guitar solo. My point is: Bruce is great, no matter how much I can’t make myself become a fan. “Thunder Road” “Tenth Avenue Freeze Out” “Born To Run” “Jungleland”
I like parts of this album. There are some decent songs and I always enjoy horns in rock music, but the lesser known songs are kind of boring and sometimes I can't fully get behind the boss. 3/5 Might listen again
Big Springsteen guy?
Meh
The Boss is an artist I’ve always considered overrated. This was fine but not an album I’m likely to revisit.
Having only known the same big hits everyone knows I didn't expect to be much into this, but I actually enjoyed the tracks I hadn't heard before more than the ones I had. Thunder Road is a great opener, I liked Tenth Avenue Freeze Out and Backstreets too. There are some Meatloaf vibes throughout, Bruce must have been an influence. It's still probably not gonna be a keeper for me, but I can appreciate the the pure passion the Boss injects into every word.
Background music. Saved a song: N RYM: Y (#351)
Yet another blast from the past. It's been a little over 200 albums since I rolled Springsteen's Nebraska, which is an album I remembered liking but have since come off from appreciating. I thought it was pretty cool conceptually, though I haven't felt any drive to revisit it since and I only had a mild appreciation for it at the time. Guess I'll have to see where Springsteen's earliest entry takes me this time. Yeah, not bad. This is remarkably consistent and concise. It doesn't waste a moment across it's 40-minute runtime, which is a lot more than can be said than the other albums I've been rolling lately. The Dylan-esque harmonica isn't my thing, though the instrumentation is pretty decent overall. I especially enjoyed the sax and the piano. Springsteen's vocals are pretty alright, too. There's an impressive level of range that he showcases on this album. I'm not head-over-heels for anything I heard here, but it's pretty solid for what it sets out to be. "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" had some nice instrumentation. I like the sax and the pianos. The vocals are pretty good, too. The title track is pretty great. It has a very nice energy in the vocals, and I appreciate the weightless instrumental. The guitars during the chorus are especially good. The rest of the album is solid, though I'd be lying if I said the nine-minute closer didn't lose me. Book time. Where Springsteen found his footing and forged his own identity, though that's about it. I get the impression that this is a solid pick. It's pretty watertight, and the quick pace/seamless vocals set it apart from other rock albums that I've listened to. I cosign this inclusion.
verspielter, fröhlicher Rock mit schönen Riffs. Emotional uninteressant, nicht besonders dynamisch
OK as background music
Good, but many of the songs sound the same.
I think, like my feelings on New Order, maybe my perception of what Springsteen is was just based off one or two hits. I know super high energy all the time is his thing, but I found it a bit tiring? Like, sick playing/arrangements and the dude can sing like nobody's business.. but I found it tough to sink into his world (i think) because things started to sound like noise to me
I have listened to this record before, but have I really ‘listened’ to it? There is something about the jangly piano and the glockenspiel that feels a little bit silly/Christmas. Instrumentally it is an exceptional record, E Street band are obviously no joke. The roaring on Backstreets is crazy. I’m not entirely sure if I like it? It is bold. Born to Run is a hit for a reason. Instrumental hook is perfect, chorus is brilliant. This song does feel like running down an American highway in the midwest Organ and horns are great. I really want to love this record, but to be honest I don’t feel taken by the songwriting. It doesn’t feel particularly memorable and the instrumentals only get halfway to compensating for that. It’s nice to put on for a certain energy, but I’m not sure how often I’ll come back.
A couple of great tracks and some very silly overlong Vegas-Elvis, Dylan on steroids type of american music, which alot of people love don't they?
I was surprised that this album did not resonate with me and I didn't like it much. I feel weird about it, but whatcha gonna do. I was drained after I got through Backstreets.
Ugh I think this is actually my favorite Springsteen album yet (having only listened to Nebraska and Born in the U.S.A.), but I just... don't care for his music too much! It's good, I can certainly see the appeal. It just doesn't vibe with me enough.
Overall I found the music quite enjoyable however only "Meeting across the river" stood out for me, still quite a good album.
Not for me.
Impressive record from a songwriting standpoint and can appreciate what it did for Rock and Roll but doesn't really land with me, maybe if I were in teen in the 70's. Feels a bit too formulaic and over-the-top for essentially being pop rock. And while the character-driven storytelling is good, some of the lyrics are too repetitive ("Backstreets"). Springsteen's Roy Orbison impression singing doesn't land with me.
I've never consciously or voluntarily heard a single Bruce Springsteen song. However, I now understand why he is such a well-known name! This album, musically, does a great job at combining americana/country/jazz in such a refreshing way. While I am not the biggest fan of his vocals, I appreciated the instrumentation. I found the cadence in his song structure interesting, although I don't think I could verbalize it after two listens.
"Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" and "Born to Run" are standouts that I saved and really enjoyed. I respect Bruce Springsteen, but I just can't get into him for some reason. Solid album. Not my favorite, but it was still overall pleasant.
Bruce Springsteen has a lot of talent, but I'm also not a blue collar worker from New Jersey so I didn't really vibe with it. The nine minute closer was a bit of a shock.
Not a huge spirngsteen fan but it was enjoyable and went pretty quickly.
First listened to this twenty years ago when I was first getting into music and gave Springsteen a shot. All I took from Springsteen over the years is Darkness on the Edge of Town and some of his 90s Americana stuff. He's always rubbed me the wrong way. He's a phony tough guy making pop music pretending to be rock. He's whiny and over-dramatic. His 80s stuff is horrible, but his 70s and 90s stuff is ok. So I like 4 songs on this album and don't like the other 4. Born to Run is one of the songs I don't like. When the music is good, it's very good. He writes good sad music, even if he's only sad about having to go to work. The upbeat stuff is corny, as are his tough guy from the rough side of town lyrics. But I do like the songs I like, and will continue to listen to them. Good songs: Thunder Road, Night, Backstreets, Jungleland
It's not bad music, but it's too theatrical for my taste. Bruce feels like he's trying to fill a Broadway stage by himself with no PA system, and he's going to explode if he doesn't get it out.
Pretty good but I wasn’t crazy about it
A great Springsteen album 3/5
I like the song Born To Run. Listening to this made me like it slightly less as a few other similar born to run imposters are on the album. Never really understood why people particularly like Springsteen (he said in a indecipherable mumbly voice, backed by some unremarkable music)
Clearly hugely influential but not really my thing - feels very overblown perhaps reflecting the long studio time and I am not really into sax on Rock records - of which this has more than its fair share..
I think the more I'm forced to listen to Bruce Springsteen the less I think that he really is the working class musical hero we all think that he is.
Great album by the boss!!
This is my second time listening to this album. It's still average compared to other supposed classics. "Born to Run" has two great songs: "Thunder Road" and the title track. The other six were let-downs. I hope I get an amazing album to end the week. 3 stars for "Born to Run".
Decent. Title track is the standout, but Jungleland was good too. Nothing exceptional, but solid
A musician that doesn’t particularly inspire me. I can’t say that it’s bad and he seems a decent bloke so it get 3stars
Medium - background?
This was shorter than I expected and seemed to me like the balance between the music and the vocals was slightly off in favour of the music? This was fine but wouldn’t push me to prioritise listening to additional Springsteen music which I’d expected that it would.
It was fine. I did really like him in concert. I feel like he is a lesser Meatloaf on a lot of songs.
Born To Run was more enjoyable than I remembered, both in terms of the album and the title track. It's during the best phase of his career and has a couple examples of the tropes that made Bruce famous. His strained vocals and over the top enthusiasm are still kinda endearing before they devolve into what I find to be tired played out trope later in his career. My main take away is how good the E Street Band is on this album. While Bruce will always be the face/front-man, the E Street Band really carry Born To Run. The piano lines are solid, Clarence's sax is great when it gets the spotlight, Max's drumming is on point, and occasional brass and strings are effective when they join the mix. Without their influence you lose the majority of the charm of the act, which is why I've always disliked The Boss's acoustic and later albums without the E Street band. I did a deep dive on Springsteen a couple years back and realized that outside of a couple of hits The Boss isn't really my thing. I'd make exception for Born In The USA and Born To Run, both of which are worthy entries for 1001 even if you aren't a fan. They give you the necessary glimpse as to how and why he was sellling #1 records for an extended time and why the E Street Band were able to spin off and remain relevant at times. You can keep the remainder of his discography away from me though. 2.99 stars
Meatloaf without the fun.
pretty okay
Honestly, pretty fun, though it's not really my style and I wouldn't come back to it.
not bad 3/5
3-4
I get why it’s popular. Every song sounds epic and played/sung like his life depends on it. But beyond a couple of tracks, it doesn’t really do it for me.
I had never really given a focused listen to any of Springsteen’s albums before this. It was about what I expected, well crafted songs with his signature vocal style. I think I have to give this a 3+ stars with the potential for more with more listens, it grew on me the further I got into it and could see that trend continuing with more exposure.
I gotta give this one another listen. I want to like Springsteen, he’s undeniably talented, evocative, and all that. It just never seems to really speak to me. I dunno, try again see if it clicks more.
Solid album, but I prefered Born in the USA over this.
Might be great music to some people...
Besides his hits that everyone knows, I can't bring myself to get behind the Springsteen hype. I think it's a combination of his voice and his instrumentals being all over the place. Pick a sound, dammit. Overall, it's not bad but I ain't listening to it ever again.
I'm surprised this was released since 1975 because it sounds like it's from the '80s. Ahead of its time I guess. I don't really like how he sings. Fav song was Freeze Out.
3 out of 5. First time listening to Springsteen's albums. Didn't realize his music can go big, and there's some good stuff here.
The horns and piano were off putting at tikes. Springsteen is a little American cringe but I enjoyed this
Annoying vocals, and he takes himself too seriously. But cohesive and pretty tight musically
Spruce
Not my thing, instrumentals are decent, voice sounds like a bad Elvis impression
*The band sounds great *it has some great songs but I can’t get fully into it
Its alright? Nothing on this album makes me want to listen to more springsteen, but the musical composition is solid, but I just really couldn't vibe with it. 3/5.
what's that with cars being in every song lyrics? the album is fine, just not my cup of tea
I like Bruce Springsteen, but sadly I'm not a big fan of his music. Born to Run is a good song, but the rest of the album did nothing for me
It was good.
Good
This was OK, but most of the songs sounded the same
I can't understand the general enthusiasm for Bruce Springsteen. There are a few very catchy tracks on this album too. But even those don't inspire me. On top of that, I don't like Bruce's voice. I wouldn't turn the album off, but I wouldn't seek it out either. 3/5
Title track was worse than i remembered - I thought it was basic but catchy! Cover Me is better but so samey still. Darlington County - can't get over how bad his voice is and it's only the 80s! Working on the Highway - I like the similarity to Dead Ringer but this is then just a...less good version of it. Downbound Train - first good song! I'm On Fire - this is a REALLY good song, it has to be said. Gotta love the wistful. No Surrender - liked this one too! Bobby Jean is okay, so is I'm Goin' Down (latter is real samey). Glory Days is chipper but too samey to be good. Dancing In the Dark is pretty fun and nostalgic. My Hometown - nice opening notes. Sweet wistful tune in general.
I imagine listening to this album driving across some unnamed middle state back in the day hit so nice. Bruce is never a guy I go searching for but always find myself singing along to when he pops on the radio (aka my spotify mixes).
I liked it, thought it would be a bit of a stronger album, but I guess that’s my internal bias as I’ve never fully listened to a Springsteen album. A few nice hits on here though.
Unlike many other artists, I much prefer Bruce Springsteen’s more recent material over his older stuff. Pre-2000’s Springsteen isn’t as interesting to me as post. Born To Run feels strangely flat compared to The Rising, Devils & Dust, Working On A Dream etc. It’s still good - just not great, in my opinion.
I get why this album is classic springsteen, but not for me
aardig
Ok yay ❤️
Okay so I'm 20 albums in and this is my third Springsteen album. I rated the other two 4/5 but this whole time those ratings felt weird cause I wasn't excited every time another album of his came up, like each song I could tell was a great song and lyrics, right up my alley, but I didn't enjoy it per se. Anyway, this album has made me realize it's because I don't like his voice. This makes sense as I have always enjoyed covers of his songs but never gotten into his music. I didn't like these songs as much as the other ones though (Nebraska & Born In the U.S.A.) so overall nothing really stood out to me on this one other than bad (his voice) and good (Born to Run).
Not sure I’ve listened to a Springsteen album start to finish. It’s a big sound, accomplished, great voice and flow. A lot of energy and heart and great for live performances that he is so renowned for. Maybe not something I would go back to, too often, as choice. But can notice its quality and energy and happy enough with that. Go Bruce! (3.5)
Bruce's breakout album and one of his best works. Never had been a big Springsteen fan and don't rate is as high as others would place it. It's a perfectly fine and enjoyable record with some of hits and good production for the mid 70s.
J'ai préféré Darkness on the edge of town.
Boss - classic but not keen on his voice
The Boss... what else ?
I don’t know much about Springsteen, but for some reason I’ve always had a good impression of him – an unpretentious musician doing his thing without drama. This album (apparently one of his early ones) only confirmed my impression. Although it’s not my musical cup of tea, I can recognize the talent. It’s got heart, and Springsteen sounds like he’s having fun. Musically speaking, it’s a bit overproduced for my taste, but also richer than I expected. There’s a lot of different influences, and I don’t quite know how to define the end product – orchestral blues-pop ? Some instruments sound rehashed and artificial, but you can feel the artist is at least trying to build something that goes beyond consensual country-rock. The result sounds surprisingly modern for a 1975 album. Lyrically speaking, it’s cheesy, but in a honest way. He’s talking to and about the common people (without being a conservative prick, which is in itself a feat when you rely so heavily on the "Heart of America" mythos), and he’s not pretending to be something he’s not. A reasonnably pleasant listen overall, but I doubt I’ll ever come back to it. I’ll give it a 2,5* for effort, and round it up to 3* for honesty.
So, Bruce, Da Boss, is undeniably a talented lyricist (and composer if he's in charge of that, idk). He's got the energy, a great ensemble, and just gives it his all. Folks absolutely adore him. I'm not one of those people. It just does not resonate with me. Like I can't even critically try to say it has problems, but for me this album isnt a stellar achievement. Maybe that's an overstatement but it was no more enjoyable than many of the albums I've listened to this far.
I don't know what to say about this album. I felt it was pretty good but lacked something, but I can't say what exactly. I don't know, it was too soft-sounding for my taste, but beyond that, I can't say. It’s very well produced and a lot more detailed than typical pop rock albums, so at least it has that going for it. 7/10
The sound of this album was abrasive. It was shrill, overwhelming and intense. Springsteen sounded like he was shouting basically on every track. Combining a lack of nuance with overproduction, this record was noisy. There were musical elements that I liked, like the saxophone, harmonica, piano. But every instrument was attacking my ears. The musical moments that I liked were overshadowed by dense mixes. The back half of this album really saved it, in my opinion. There was more subtlety and musicality, and, frankly, the songs were more pleasing. I just wish the instruments weren’t muddy and harsh. 6/10 Standouts: Born to Run She’s the One Meeting Across the River Jungleland
pretty nicee ★★★½
Was never a fan of the Boss, but after listening to most of the crap on this list, it sounds pretty damn good.
Better than I thought and some good bass lines in there too (Backstreets I think). I wouldn't choose it but I'd listen to it!
Dad- 8 Mom- 8 Mike- NA Lori- 4 Michael- 8 Miles- NA Cole- 4 Avg- 6.4
Enjoyable. 3 and a half stars.
Some huge anthems, but the impact of them is slightly blunted by the way he starts every song at 100% energy, so there's nowhere else to go
Bruce Springsteen is an undeniable master storyteller, but it's always been his presentation that's failed to connect with me. The boomer nostalgia rock-and-roll sound with the saxophone and piano just doesn't work for me. I much prefer "Nebraska" which is just Bruce's gravelly voice, his wonderfully poetic lyrics, and an accoustic guitar. 3 stars.
Rating: 3.4 He sounds like Robert Smith and Tom Waits had a kid that outperforms both of them by 100 times. A little bit too haughty and corny sounding for my tastes but I’d try it again someday if someone forced me to listen to it.
I’m not listening to Bruce man
First time listening to Bruce Springsteen. A good start to jump into this 1001 album adventure. Old-fashioned rock and roll with a bit of twinge. It was a good listen that felt right for the week I've had. A 7/10 for me. Mini0n, 28/08/2025
I have underestimated Bruce Springsteen
Außerhalb des musikhistorischen Kontexts mir leider zu gewöhnlich, Gitarre löst nix aus in mir, Klavier manchmal ganz cool, Stimme leider eher anstrengend. Konnte ich aber gut durchhören.
I knew half of the songs already going into this, but it doesn't really resonate with me. I think I prefer my Bruce stripped down or when he's more economical. I get what they were reaching for, but for me it's too grand, and too flabby
This sounds like "safe" rock music. It's comforting in some way. His strength appears to be his vocal delivery, rather than his creativity or lyricism. Kinda a snoozer.
It's like a great sandwich but you put too many tomatoes in it, and it soaks the bread too much. You still eat it and is delicious, but every bite is a bit uncomfortable.
23/08/2025 I just don't understand the hype around Springsteen, it's all very boring. Spotify listeners: 20.3 million.
Not bad.
That was nice
Solid Bruce Springsteen rock and roll. Good album. Best song: Thunder Road
still not a fan of his voice, so I was shocked that I actually enjoyed this album. great instruments/ variations/ arrangements. 3.5 only due to his voice
I know this is a classic, beloved album. But I've never been a Springsteen fan. This album didn't convert me.
Moving and emotional exuberance on this record from The Boss. This record seems to have much more gravitas than Born in the U.S.A. He shines bright on this album and it shows the level of work and commitment he put into it, learning from his previous releases.
Good album.
Pretty good, felt a bit standard rock for me
I always liked the title track. It's probably one of his best songs. I think the piano really shines on this album.
every song sounded like the end credits of a movie. lots of catchy licks (it’s basically completely made up of licks). thunder road is a good song. surprising amount of glockenspiel overall
I like Springsteen, but his vocals on “Backstreets” is one of the most grating vocal performances I’ve EVER experienced
I feel like I am supposed to really like Bruce, but I’m afraid after a few songs they al started to sound the same to me.
For me, not relatable. His music invokes images of suburban america
A perfectly good rock album, but the songs felt a little too meandering at times.
Sounds very much like Bruce Springsteen. He's a craftsman, not an artist. Not a bad song on the album, but it's all not very adventurous. Favorite song: Born to Run.
I’m not a huge Springsteen fan, and honestly, I don’t think Born to Run is even his best album. It has its moments though. The title track is iconic for a reason, but overall, it doesn’t win me over. “Jungleland” is probably the highlight, but even that track feels about four minutes longer than it needs to be.
it was pretty good! I like his voice a lot and great instrumentals. 7/10
I can’t take to Springsteen however hard I try. This one is all a bit samey in an overblown way. It’s just too much. Too much saxophone, too busy. His voice is so overwrought at times I find it almost laughable. However there are some gems in here, that I can’t deny. And it’s better than Nebraska
He’s a legend, but not my cuppa tea
thunder road- 5 tenth avenue freeze out- 6 night- 6 backstreets- 6 born to run- 7 shes the one- 5 or 6 meeting across the river- 5 jungleland- 6 thanks, bruce
A pretty solid album here. I didn't like it as much as the previous Springsteen album but still good.
Like most artists on this list, I haven't heard much of them besides the hits. This starts off with "Thunder Road" which is one of those hits that I've grown to love. I like that this album is a normal ~40 minutes, but only 8 songs, so we really get some longer tracks. If done right, it gives the songs a chance to develop. Most of these achieve that and they don't feel played out or get boring. "Backstreets" being a good example of this. Bruce's voice is so recognizable and just fits this genre so well. I enjoyed this entire album more than I thought I would going in! (3.5/5) Favorites: - Thunder Road - Backstreets - Born to Run - Jungleland
This is going to be a recurring sentence, but this was my first full album for this artist. A few more songs, and I might have started getting annoyed with his gravelly voice, but overall this was solid. I’m also always a sucker for saxophone. Favorite tracks: - Thunder Road - Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out - Born to Run
I respect the hell out of him, but I just don’t get the appeal.
Most bearable Springsteen album. It will not get better than this.
Coool
Bruce är stabil
*I liked Born in the US better. This was Thunder Road and Born to Run, with a bunch of songs that sounded like watered down versions of those two songs as filler. *Fave track - Thunder Road RATING - 6.5/10
I’m not a huge Bruce guy, but this album is pretty good. Not too long, and half the songs on it are hits. 3+
It's all-right
ok
Couple of classics. Lots of filler.
Average and samey
Damn, this author sure loves Bruce Springsteen. The album wasn't half bad, by that I mean that half of the album was good.
Good album 👍 Springsteen’s lyrics are great, he does a great job painting pictures of America in both the good and the bad, and his own personal experiences. There are some great songs on here too, but the album as a whole just didn’t really grab me. I’m glad I listened to it, but I’ll probably just listen to the songs I really liked in the future.
This album felt like listening to a musical for some reason. Good thing I like musicals.
I'm not a thespian I'm an ameripian. Enjoyed way more than I expected. Is this what normal people think Queen/Billy Joel/other bullshit karaoke music sounds like?? Fav song: Thunder Road
Thunder Road reminds me a lot of Meatloaf. Some great hits here others not as great.
LIstenable.
Favorites: Backstreets, Born to Run, Meeting Across the River
It was fine Dad Rock.
Rather good one.
no ta mal
Nice album with great energy, and the title track really stands out. However, most of the tracks seem to be written and produced before we figured out how to end a song properly. The fading out at the end of songs really isn’t my thing.
Standout Songs: Thunder Road Born to Run Jungleland I understand the praise that this album gets, but I just think it is a little dry. No real difference in sound between songs, another album where everything kinda meshes together. I also find his voice isn’t really in rhythm with the music, and the lyrics are a tad wordy. It’s not a bad album but not Bruce’s best work by any means.
Okay I was NOT expecting it to be like.... bluesy??? I feel like I just imagine Bruce Springsteen in my head being like..... pop? But it's obviously not. This was 1975?! I can see why people are obsessed with him lol. He was definitely way before my time and I think I see him as kind of dated in general. But I've only heard his really famous and popular songs and definitely none from this album! So it's interesting to actually hear what made him popular. This was his third studio album!!! Third! Born in the USA was his 7th?! That's crazy I didn't know his discography was like that! I think he got really really famous for his more pop sounding music, like I've heard the title track from this album before. But I really just enjoy the more blues sounding songs from him! I think it suits his voice much better. So far Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out is my favorite. I think sometimes his voice sounds like he's yawning lol. He ends with an 8.5 min song? BRUCE. That's insane!!!! I liked it, wasn't anything that was mind-bending. I felt like I could honestly tune it out, like I was at a bar or something. It's still good though!! I liked it.
Listening to this album was very helpful in times of grief since it’s really appropriate for the time of my parents friends
Better album but Bruce Springsteens style kind of annoys me
Never been a big Bruce Springsteen fan. Not that the music is bad, just not my taste.
Despite its reputation, I'd never heard the album. I've never been a big Springsteen fan and found the album a bit hit and miss. There were some decent tracks but also some mediocre ones.
I can see why Horn to Run was the title track. It’s the best one. The rest aren’t bad but very similar. I couldn’t differentiate the rest except the first track “Thunder Road” which is pretty good
Nothing special even though he's a legend
Jersey Jersey Jersey. Good rock music with a full sound and Dylan-ish lyrics
i’m sorry to my close personal friends bruce and clarence but i don’t really like the sound of this record. it’s TOO MUCH! the lyrics are so insanely gorgeous—”the screen door slams / mary’s dress sways” is such an incredible opening line for the whole album, it sets the tone so effectively—but the slamming piano and blasting sax and bruce leaning into his country twang delivery undercut the lyrics in basically every track unfortunately. there are some real ear worms on here though. fav track: tenth avenue freeze-out
Having grown up with punk and new wave, this was the sort of music I railed against as a teenager. It doesn't seem as bad now, though I still prefer his more subtle moody stuff to the shouty 'murican anthems.
Repetitive. In his later stadium stuff you can’t really tell how gravelly (bad) his voice is, but you can hear. I can see why people like this though, I’m just not one of them. Fine, but only a superfan could give this a 5/5.
After 3 albums, I don't care much for the boss
ok, good music but nothing that connected with me
Like the title track, but the rest…eh. Extra half star for title, 3.25
Very good, just didn't resonate on this listen.
Pretty mid for Bruce
I'm being a little generous with my rating. I get how important this album is to Springsteen's career and it's place in Rock history, but even at 8 songs it all sounds so...middling. Born to Run is the highlight. and Jungleland is pretty great but sounds like a rip-off of a Billy Joel song. But the rest is just all so-so. I don't know. Maybe I'll revisit at a later date and change my mind.
Great album that I have never heard the whole way through. Great American rock with some classic songs. Very well written and catchy tunes all around. Bruce never forgot what it meant to be a working American and it really comes through in his lyrics.
This first track made me think Meatloaf was about to bust out singing. Springsteen is a revered artist and I think it's societally implied that everyone should be able to find the brilliance just by listening. I am just not connecting with this music as expected. It's fine and I am sure people growing up in that era have a nostalgic bond with him. but I'm not going to be one of those people. This is just normal 70's rock with extra instruments.
Mostly very bland rock that unfortunately feels like it's always about to launch into "Santa Clause is coming to town", always struggle to love 70's Springsteen ⭐⭐⭐
I haven't ever listened to one of his albums in full, so this is kinda fun.
Great album. Nobody is cooler than Bruce on the cover of this album. Totally blue collar just making music. This has a good mix of hits and b-sides. I enjoyed the listen.
I liked it a lot. Rock and jazzy classical background instrumental together was so surprising. It exceeded my expectations.
I am a fan of The Boss as a person and enjoy his music casually. Same goes for this album. 3/5 Album 64/1001
Lots of streets, road, neighbourhoods, ... Don't care for it that much, although I know it's good. Born to run is one of the best songs ever, though. And The Boss remains one of the best live acts. 3/5
Rock, a veces. No todo lo que brilla es oro.
Heartland rock is really not my thing and this did little to change my mind (I’m getting a strange sense of De Ja Bruce).
Classic
I've never really listened to Springsteen as I've never really been able to take his music seriously, there's something very comical about it to me, but I enjoyed this! Not enough to listen to more really but I did like it.
This was oddly mid 3/5
Avg
I much prefer this album to Born in the U.S.A. I don’t think I’d put it on for any real reason and I didn’t find anything particularly amazing with this but I did like Meeting Across the River. I did however download it so that means something I guess
Found the singing and instrumentation to be a little grating, not my cup of tea. However, the last two songs blew me away with their energy and emotion. Mixed bag.
Not my vibe, but enjoyable enough.
-third Bruce Springsteen record here we go.. feels pretty different from both Nebraska and Darkness On The Edge Of Town. very high energy which I like and probably the most cohesive of the three -not my absolute favorite type of music but it’s really good for what it is! I get why it’s so popular -Favorites are Thunder Road and Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out
Ngl he has an annoying voice
Born to Run and some other tunes from the Boss.
ok
Great album much respect for “the boss” but also not exactly my style
Opens strong! Last few songs are a bit meh, strong 3
A lot of interesting sounds and melodies but only two songs go to my favs. - born to run - jungleland
Pleasant, good, but I'm not sure if it's anything special to be honest. Or at least for me. It's easy to listen, but I don't feel a strong pull. And yeah, surprisingly it does sound like Meat Loaf + Jim Steinman, but waay less theatrical.
I would never deny that this album is a classic or say it isn't worthy of praise. Bruce is very emotive and authentic in his performance, and the songwriting and musicality is all there. I personally am not really into this style of dad-rock so it will never be amongst my personal favorites, but I appreciate it.
It was ok. I've heard Thunder Road and Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out like a million times, and Jungleland is way too long. The Soprano's Silvio Dante plays on this album, which is a fun fact.
Somewhat uninspiring vocal work, but decent instrumentals. 'Born to Run' was a fun song.
obj. 3 star mälläilyä…
This was a bit abrasive and harder to get into than expected. It’s less palatable than the songs Springsteen is famous for. I still enjoyed a few songs, especially the longer ones like Backstreets and Jungleland. I liked the melancholic aspects of the songs and where I couldn’t warm up to his voice, which occasionally happened, I could still appreciate the instruments in the background.
Lot of saxophone. Nothing like summer of 69 style. A lot of range in his album
An extra star for Born To Run, but generally I find it a bit yawnsome.
Classic album. Some good songs here.
01) Thunder Road - 7,0 02) Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out - 7,0 03) Night - 7,0 04) Backstreets - 6,5 05) Born To Run - 10,0 06) She's The One - 7,0 07) Meeting Across the River - 6,5 08) Jungleland - 6,5 TOTAL: 7,19 (72/100) Current ranking: 287/515
Twas alright. Might've been my mood, but I didn't really love the sound.
Bruce insist upon itself.
Thunder Road and Born To Run already make this brilliant. The rest is decent but not up to the same standards.
Bra Rock n Roll album, standard Bruce lite mumliga vokaler. Solid
Good album overall.
It was just what I expected, nothing more nothing less. Maybe old brucie is a bit overrated but that doesn’t mean I think he’s bad
He has much more iconic albums... This one is really carried by the title track, no?
Ok until to born to run. After that, meh. 3 stars
Rating: 3.5/5 | Favorite Track: Born to Run --- Not big on heartland rock but I have a lot of respect for Bruce Springsteen as a songwriter, especially with his incorporation of progressive politics into his music. I probably won't listen to this album too often, but the title track is a classic.
5/10
