Reviews (page 4 of 8)

It's a great hop hop album. While a lot of early 90s stuff leant into the gangsta trend, this stays in the late 80s fun hip hop stylings, but with updated beats and lyricism. And the lyricism is incredibly tight - from fun stuff like Ya Mama and Oh Shit (though there is a very 'of it's time' verse) to more moving stuff like all time classic Passin Me By, there's barely a verse on here that won't make you smile. It runs a bit long but when it's good it's really good.

Love this early 90s (and beyond) alt hip-hop. Want rate it highly, but if PE’s Apocalypse is a five star, this is a 4. Really good, but there are still greater heights in this genre.

actually really fun

I really enjoyed the backing tracks and the rapping on this album. It's got a good enjoyable sound, but I'm not sure I agree with Wikipedia that the lyrics are just "playful" and "wacky," even for 1992. Yeesh.

passing me by is proper bang on

Really classic hip hop... love it!

Sometimes a lil too silly goofy for me but, definitely great songs too

Very close to 5 star

Being Tribe Called Quest us my favorite band, of course a vibey, feel good early 90s hip hop album is going to rank high for me. I love the bouncy but melodic sound of old school hip hop. Oh Shit is great and Passin' Me By is an all-timer. I don't think I've ever listened to this whole album before...

first listen what a bucket of bouncy fun, much like tribe called quest

7/10 really ridiculous and absurd, but overall it had nice flows and beats.

Quite fun, though a bit long. 8/10

Hip-hop con ramalazos de jazz. Está bien. Un 4.

This is a bizarre album and a lot of fun. Definitely less series than the popular gangsta rap at the time. Everyone on the album sounds like they're having fun. It is more similar to De La Soul with a more jazzy and funky backdrop. Great production and sampling. Notable samples from Richard Pryor, James Brown and Jimi Hendrix. Four emcees/rappers who rap separately or as a group. Some of these songs definitely go for comedy, singing about how fat your Momma is. One area it does suffer from, which appears to be a common theme in the CD Era, is its length at 56 minutes. Though, it does not drag.

Pretty cool album - a bit too adolescent at times but groovy and interesting and modern

I really liked this, really fun production and verses overall 8/10

Amazing

Классный хип-хоп из ЛА 1992 года. Первый и, ставший золотым, альбом.

Like it, lyrics are weird though and very graphic

Classic soul and funk samples over a weird variety of topics such as fisting, shooting someone in the ass, forgetting your driving licence, being discombobulated, trying to be a stereotypical hip-hop artist and failing for a music video... If you want to get weird to hip-hop this is the album for you. Best Tracks: Oh Shit; Officer; Passin' Me By

Love the light vibe.

Really enjoyed this, even if the musical hooks aren't quite there to push it into the stratosphere. Great MCing, especially on the more humorous tracks. In terms of texture it doesn't feel a million miles from Souls of Mischief.

So much skill and silliness, but the replay value is a bit limited for me. Best track: Passin' Me By

A fizzing little cracker of groovy backing tunes with lovely effing and jeffing rap on top. I’ll take it, thanks.

Nice to hear Passin' Me By on here. Never knew who that was by. A generally chill west-coast vibes type album. 4.5

Я вот слышал недавно альбом, то же репово-джазовый. Так вот этот круче.

Enjoyable hip-hop, takes me back!

Not sure how, as a hip hop fan, i had never heard this before. Love the sound, some of the lyrics have aged, but i love how much fun it sounds like they were having.

Hresst og skemmtilegt old school hiphop. Nýttist vel sem tiltektar tónlist.

Love the beats and groove. Dislike the vulgarity.

not bad, It sounds great

pretty good alt-rap, especially considering how heavy gangsta was at the time. 3.5 rounnding up for me.

Plenty of laughs and cool grooves on this album. Favorite tracks: Oh Shit (really catchy), Officer, Ya Mama, Passin' Me By, and Otha Fish (really cool groove). It was a fun album - definitely pretty inappropriate, but I've certainly heard worse.

Smooth sample which I liked

Du sacre bon rap poriginale avec de bon flows et de bon producer. Un classique westcoast 4.25

Good stuff ;)

solido hip hop old style, testi che strappano risate

Dank dark and delicious. Not drawn to hip-hop but this was great. Gotta go with the lyrical flow!

svängigt så in i helvete ju!

Good early 90s hip hop and the skits were not as annoying as some later albums

This was a cool one. I've been recommended this one before but never got around to it. Definitely a worthy consideration as a hip-hop classic, though I don't see much mention of Pharcyde in those conversations. Plenty of great beats and hooks, including a few that I recognized as samples. Great humor and energy. The skits bogged this down a bit; that's a complaint I'd have about a lot of classic rap albums. But it's still a great ride. Favorite tracks: Oh Shit, Passin' Me By, 4 Better of 4 Worse, Soul Flower Remix. Album art: Love the art style here. The characters a bit unsettling, and they're riding a coaster into what appears to be a....uh...Georgia O'Keeffe painting with teeth. I like this a lot. 4/5

Fun kind of rap

If you're looking for an easy intro to hip-hop, look no further than Bizarre Ride II from Pharcyde. This album represents the perfect transitional record between old school and new hip-hop. Eminem had to be looking at this thinking, that's my roadmap to success. Oh Shit is amazing! Definitely glad to have heard that one! I'll be referencing it for years! Obviously some of this album is meant to examine both humor but also racial inequality in the style of hip hop, which both wants to exclude and include me as a white man, who clearly can NOT sing along. But it's their humor that keeps everyone on board and it's brilliant to make a record like this. The beats are amazing too. There's a Jazz under current and references to Thelonious Monk. There's some real weird stuff in here, but it's captivating. At the end of the day, it's innovative, compelling, funny, and like I said, a great intro to the genre!

American, 90s, Hip-hop + Jazzy, happy, funny = Male - {5/16} [4/5]

Gloomy and at the same time very cheerful album. The jazz elements are well done. Very good for an early 90s hip hop album. (7/10) Favourite Tracks: I'm That Type of Nigga, Passin' Me By,

Good hip hop with a nice sound

Good bit of old skool rap. 4

90s rap is so comforting

the antidote to gangster rap. creative, fun, no misogyny. what's not to like?

The kind of a manic, funny, and catchy hip hop album that I’d expect from the early 90s classic Nickelodeon cartoon era album. I don’t know why, but when I hear this album all I can think about is that it exudes Ren and Stempy energy. Definitely should be called a “classic”- if you’re a native tongues fan on the east coast, then this is the west coast’s response to tribe, jungle brothers, and de la soul. If you like them, I can’t recommend this album more.

Clever and inventive.

Itselle uusi tuttavuus. Oli pakko kuunnella kahdesti kun oli hyvä meno musassa. 3,5*

In a time that Gangsta Rap and the East Coast / West Coast rivalry was ruling the airwaves, Pharcyde's Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde is a modern hip hop album in a classic style.

Old school hip hop. Dig it. Remember these tunes from Tonk Hawk Pro Skater

Classic party rap from my younger dayz. If you don't like this, you're just not cool, sorry.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: I'm that type of nigga, Soul flower, Passin' me by

The debut by The Pharcyde is an insanely infectious good time. The group sounds like they are just having so much fun crafting and constructing their flows amongst the generally bare bones, upbeat and jazzy production. The beats are good, do the work they need to but isn't anything groundbreaking and honestly is probably the only thing holding this back from a 5/5. It's a great album because you can distinctly feel the good time vibes and you feel like you are right there along for the ride, and the ride is a joy.

Incredible production, great storytelling, wanna walk down the street bopping to these cuts man it's fire

Really fun album, the group dynamic worked well. I think it was kind of what I expect from an early 90s hip hop album. Felt a bit too unpolished though.

Classic West Coast hip hop album by The Pharcyde. Playful and comical eccentric lyrics and incredible rapping skills.

really 90s in the best way really good

absolutely loved this album! the rapping, production, lyrics, everything about it is so unique and interesting. thanks guys for the suggestion!

got some funny story lyrics yeah enjoyed listening to this very very much. also bonus points its jazz hip hop

bah c'est super 4

A very good album. Crept up from a 5/10 to 8/10 on repeat listens. Shit and Jiggaboo are hilarious - I'm going to be saying "Oh Shit!" for the rest of my life now. 4 better or 4 worse has a smooth backbeat and does an odd turn halfway through where the song basically goes full Insane Clown Posse. I'm that type of Nigga is just a classically good hip hop intro track. They should have made it the opening track to the album. Soul Flower is a fun and bouncy jam - whoever the female rapper is kills it! On the DL has a hilarious skit in the middle about jacking off on the DL. unforgettable. I knew the album was something special when "Officer" had Flavor Flav as a guest and when they said "I got a letter from the DMV the other day" I busted up because I knew what they were doing. It's a play on public enemies "Black Steel in the hour of Chaos." That's genius! It is an innocent song and might be my favorite on the album. Yo mama is the low point of the album. Doesn't age well. Otha Fish and pack the pipe are forgettable, but pack the pipe does have a part when they get a kid high. It is controversial and interesting for sure. Passing me by is what this album is remembered for and it deserves that. It is an awesome song. Relatable, catchy, and ahead of its time. I found it interesting that they used the word "symp" 30 years before it was common. Excellent vocals in that chorus - stressing the word "passing," you can feel some pain. It would have been easy to mess that up. 8/10!!

Was very close to giving this a 5 but I haven't for round to the last few tracks. Never heard of them before but this is lit, or fire, or whatever kids say to hype shit up.

Awesome beats on this album. Some lines nowadays are quite cheesy, however, they represent hip-hop roots.

Not my cup of tea (este tipo de música) pero no está mal

they sound like will smith

It's just really good fun innit. Cartoonish, body popping, Richard Pryor sampling good fun.

This album really stands out as an original, creative masterpiece. I could do without songs like Oh Sh**, but that's what the skip button is for.

Non-stop party album that blends authenticity of street life with goofs on smoking weed, ragging on homies and other characters in the hood. Flowing rhymes, sharp wit, fun beats, hilarious lyrics ("Ya Mama"). A refreshing counterpoint to the gangsta rap of the early 90s.

Diese Platte ist der Quellcode für jede Platte von Fettes Brot, den Samwer-Brüdern des Deutschraps.

Excelente, principalmente pra ouvir quando cansado do que ouço.

This is a jam. I see their name a lot, but I don't think I could name a song. Standouts: soul flower. I will put this album on again. Seems like a grower.

Otha fish Passin me by good songs

NO es mi estilo, pero interesante refrescar el hip-hop de los principios. ¿Solo a mi me viene a la mente el Principe de Bel Air

This sounds like a nice bridge between early 90's fun rap and mid 90's gangsta rap. I liked it.

Man, I haven't listened to this since college. "Pack the Pipe" is an underrated track

Excellent album de classique rap, vulgaire à souhait, juste des bangers

Iconic 90s hip hop, dope beats very good listen 4.2

polished jazzy hip hop. Good addition to Roots album, loving this type of sound recently

I don't listen to much rap, and I really don't listen to much classic rap at all. This was a fun album though. I recognized and liked passin me by.

Quality 90s hip hop, smooth beats, nice flows, not a classic in my mind, probably not their best album even, but still a good listen.

👍 great album 8/10

13/1/21

3.5/5. Had some really fun tracks, but also had some I wasn’t totally into

Love this one, Pharcyde was one of the groups I’d say responsible for my love of hip hop

A good album. Labcabin is so much better for me so have to give a 4

4.5/5. Brainy, energetic 90s hip hop rap over jazz tracks. Play 'Oh Shit,' 'Soul Flower,' or 'Passin Me By' to seem hip at dinner parties. Delightfully explicit. 'Ya Mama' is a must listen.

Very dope album. Am known with the pharcyde but didn't know this specific album

Fun album! enjoyed listening to it

gewoon nice 90's hiphop maar niet baanbrekend in mijn ogen 3.5/5 stars

Feeeeeet

Hype bboy

its decent and lyrically original compared to many other album from its era and more modern

A fun and funky album. Really dug the Jazzy influence on the beats more than anything. A definite alternative to the gangsta rap that was exploding around the same time. 3.5* Rounded down to 3*

I like 90s rap and hip hop generally, but outside of a couple tracks this just doesn't do it for me. 3/5.

Need to listen

From the cover I was expecting metal, so this was a pleasant surprise!

Was expecting to hate this but didn’t. Some fun lyrics and the music was generally decent. The flow across several songs seemed similar. As always, too many skits but Quinton’s on the Way was a hoot.

Quite creative early 90s hip hop flow and lyrics with mid to late 80s beats that don't match the energy of the songs. Way too many skits, holy cow. Enjoyed some stuff, but nothing blew me away as something I need to come back to. 3/5

Good rappers, very ghetto. Not as smart, musical or enjoyable as the Refugees, which followed this on Amazon music.

Pretty good flow but very unserious, played almost like a novelty record at times.

This is undeniably one of the more unique hip-hop albums of the early 90s, but it never stood out other than a solid album for me. The group's playful chemistry and offbeat sense of humor give the record plenty of personality, while the jazzy samples are consistently smooth and inviting. It deserves credit for standing apart from the hardcore/gangster West Coast rap that dominated the era by embracing self-deprecating storytelling and a lighter, more eccentric style. That said, the album can feel longer than it needs to be. While I can bump Passin' Me By all day long, several songs and skits interrupt the momentum rather than enhance it. The humor can be hit or miss and some of the jokes haven't aged well. By the second half, the novelty starts to wear off, making the listening experience feel less consistent . Overall, this is a creative and influential album with plenty of charm. There's enough here to appreciate even if it never quite lived up to its legendary status for me.

Está muy bajo el volumen o soy yo? Aún así no hubiera mejorado la cuestión con volúmen

This was ok, I can see why it's on the list. But all through the album, I couldn't shake the feeling of being tired. It's probably me and not them, but I also want to say it's them and not me.

Despite being rap:) sometimes reminds a bit to the beasties

It's a fun, wacky alternative hip hop album with some wonderful bars and reflective lyrics. Nothing too special but pretty enjoyable.

Low expectations going into this one, but this one seemed to jump the low bar. A fun listen, but not one I’d listen to much. Rating: 6/10 Favorite Song: pass me by, soul flower

Some nice beats, surprised I've never heard of this as it's as good as some of the other hip hop acts of the time

this was a lot of fun! a solid 90s rap album. the group dynamic is great too. since I'm in catchup mode i have a feeling my ratings will be mild for the next week. oops sorry.

I enjoy this era of rap, but this album is nothing special.

Haven't heard of them. 90s hip hop is always so 50/50 for me but thankfully this time I got the kind with good music. The lyrics were a bit goofy sometimes but that's fine 3/5

This is such a groovy album, I know some of it from the film ‘Mid90s’ but it was great to hear more. The bars are great. Fav song is ‘Passin’ Me By’.

Not my style, but it has its moments. ★★★

нормалек.

Better than I would have thought. Beastie Boys like 3.5

Ok for what it is but not really my thing

schon wieder hip-hop, schon wieder west coast! das jazzige, groovige gefällt.

Es scheint die Rap-Woche zu sein... Mir etwas zu relaxed und jazzy.

This line made me laugh out loud: "Shot them in ass on the downstroke."

I like the jazzy hip-hop approach in theory, but the album felt kind of half-assed to me. The lyrics are funny (transphobia and sexism aside) but the skits are annoying and the beats are plain. There are fun pastiches of Public Enemy on Officer and the old school style on Return of the B-Boy, but I think I would have liked it all better if I'd heard it back in 1992.

Catchy hip-hop tunes and decent rap. The band name rings a bell, but they’re new to me. I gave some lower ratings to other rap/hip-hop albums due to extreme language and content. This applies here somewhat, although I’m giving them a pass here, because the content isn’t as in-your-face as, say, Straight Outta Compton. I can tune out the n-word a little more here than on NWA’s record. Pharcyde has a more accessible sound for me. 3.5 stars

Juvenile and dirty a lot but the beats are tight (? Can I say “tight”? Is that a thing the hipster hoppers would say? Possibly “dope” or “fresh”). Pretty fun not excessively obsessed with being victimized, vilified, or otherwise guilty without being tried. In a trial that is, a jury of your peers, something America hasn’t had for years. But I digress. This is funny and cool but like I said a little dirty at times.

You could talk me into this being a top ten all-time hip hop record, but you’ll have to talk me into it.this feels like what hip hop was before the preoccupation with gangsta rap in the 90s, which today means it’s “alt hip hop”. The track order on this record is kinda hilarious to me… by the time I get to “Ya Mama” I start to wonder how much more goofball music I can handle, and then “Passin’ Me By” starts and I’m sucked right back in. This record covers a lot of ground. I’m at like 3.5 stars

Fine for a hip hop album I guess

I wasn’t really liking this for the first couple of tracks but it started to grow on me after a while. Overall it was a fun enough listen, I’m gonna try to go back to it later to see if the first part clicks with me. Top Track - Soul Flower - Remix

Some very good bars and quick catchy lyrics. Felt it slightly overstayed its welcome but will definitely br coming back to this

Half listened

Phar out, bunch of zany stoners havin’ fun and recorded the session. It’s like the Beastie Boys jammin’ wid The Black Naked Ladies, but the lyrics here are more clever and the rhymin’ is better. Ya can’t help but laugh. (

Bizarre that this is the second ride by The Pharcyde and still their debut. Despite the confusion, I went along for this ride. There are some jazzy beats that bounce. The crew keeps it light throughout most of the record, having a good time. The skits show that they don't have much skill with freestyle and def better with a pad and pen. They also need to work on their Yo Mamma jokes. Even though "Passin' Me By" is considered their flagship song, "I'm That Type of Nigga" is my top track from this one. Overall a great 90s hip-hop album that stands out and comes in at 3.4 stars.

Pretty fun rap album from Pharcyde. I tend to enjoy alternate rap styles against the more popular gangster rap genre, so while I appreciate parts of Bizarre Ride II, there isn't enough meat on the bone here long-lasting appeal for me. Bizarre Ride II is truly a bizarre ride at times. The mix of backing tracks is appreciated for bringing something different to the table, but lyrics and wordplay are mostly juvenile cornball stuff that loses its luster within the album's hour-long playtime. At times it is fun, at times it is dumb, but when it wraps up its mostly just another album to check the box and cross off the list for me. I get why older rap fans may have affection for this album but I wasn't aware or familiar with any of this in the 90's so I have no nostalgia and little rap history to compare this to. A fun time capsule for a handful of tracks but nothing for me to return to. Glad to check out some of young Bootie Brown's work prior to collaborations with Gorillaz which I can appreciate. 2.63 stars

liked the music, hated the lyrics

A slightly worse version of 3 Feet High, still enjoyable though

Groot fan van het yo mama liedje. Verder vrij voorspelbare jaren 90 hiphop.

It was comical, the production was really good and I thought it was a well put together album. Some of the songs were repetitive and lengthy but overall I think that each one has something that makes it its own.

Fuckin, what did I just say. Hiphop=good, me=too white to know better.

Their debut album. Hip Hop. This was kind of fun and edgy at thirteen years old. Some nice beats. It is pretty dumb and immature though. A bit of retro fun. 2.5 rounded up to 3 here.

Was decent

It was ok

Some decent production, and definitely on the silly side, but outside of its historical impact I probably won’t revisit

old school hip hop is always fun hip hop!

Only one song saved from me, but solid 90s rap

90’s hip hop essential. The lyrics get dark in an open way. Flows easy

a good listen, a few familiar tunes.

Just not for me

It's nice, quaint, early 90s rap. Kinda funny, but there's some sneaky good word play in there as well, if you're listening. Beats are a bit too poppy for my tastes, but that's just 90s rap (non-gangsta edition) for you.

Helt ok, not my jam

Old school rap.

Reading other reviews, I’m glad I’m not alone in feeling that this is a case of bad taste, good execution. Some of these beats and flows are genuinely amazing, but most of the appeal is lost in the commitment to absurdity. Most tracks feel immature in a way that’s not even fun, just cringy and over exaggerated.

Some absolute tunes on this album.

6 out of 10 no notes.

I liked the beats on this, and the rapping was pretty good, albeit with a few dodgy lyrics. I could have done with fewer interludes and skits though.

Better than expected with the name. Decent 90s hip hop.

Goofy, but fun.

This was not half bad. This type of hip hop is much more to my liking.

A nice carbon-dated hip hop journey I never heard before. Like De la Soul minus the sentimental connection. I now know that sentimental connections are worth exactly one star.

This album has a song that's nothing but "your mama" jokes. Inclusion in this list is justified. Album feels familiar even though I've never heard it before just because of tracks like "Passin' Me By" that have been getting sampled for decades at this point.

We didn’t know how good we had it. This was just another in a line of kinda goofy, fun, but still cool albums in the extended “alternative rap” lineage, and yet now? Classic.

This was kinda fun, not really my bag but it was okay. Probably won't ever listen to it again.

Interesting to say the least

It feels like a more carefree Cypress Hill, with none of the political bite and more of the swagger of hip-hop on full display. Fun to listen to once, but not exactly something to return to.

Was aware of the pharcyde but never properly listened. Enjoyed it, sure it influenced a lot of hip hop I like. My main complaint, is that it's a bit too silly, could do with being a bit more serious in parts and with fewer skits. Still good though. Passin me by and otha fish were the best 3.5

Old school rap

This is truly not the genre for me. But it was a fun album, and I much prefer this lighter hearted hip hop to the other 90s rap that I’ve encountered on the list. 3/5. Won’t revisit though.

Rating: 7/10 This is pretty cool, always went under my radar so I'm happy for its inclusion. With a collection of good emcees, and a fun lighthearted and comedy angle, the group feels kinda ahead of its time in the world of west coast hip hop. I could go back to this more and appreciate it more over time.

the beats r great but sr the bars r givin the ick

Passing me By will always be an amazing song. But the rest of the album is a step down after that.

funny album

Good at what it is, but not my style.

Has that 90s hip hop sound that makes me just want ti immediately give it a high score. But it’s all a little bit silly, to the point I don’t think I’ll go back to it again.

it was ok

Fun album, and works perfectly as the soundtrack to me getting whipped at Virtua Fighter 5. Favourite track: On the DL

Not a bad listen.

This is my favorite kind of hip hop.

It’s nice to see some artists in this genre not taking themselves too seriously. A nice counterbalance to a lot of the other rap/hip hop artists at the time. I can’t say it was a fully enjoyable listen, but the tongue n cheek bent helps elevate this bizarre ride.

This was a bizarre ride and I liked it. 3/5

コメディの要素があり面白いらしいけどよくわからなかった

This album is pretty solid from top to bottom. Some of the late tracks are great, Otha Fish has great samples… a much deeper/interesting album than NWA and tribe albums.

That's not my taste in music - But ok

The flow and the rhymes are fantastic, proper fun listen

Совсем не моё...

We've been getting a slew of early 90's hip hop lately and I've been enjoying it. This one maybe a little less so, but I can't say it's because they aren't talented. The subject matter is a lot more goofy and casual than the Ice T, Tribe, and other albums we've gotten, but that doesn't mean the rapping is any worse. There's a lot of funny lines in here, particularly "Ya Mama", to bring humor to one of it's most base forms, in a complimentary way of course. "Oh Shit" was also really good, and it showcases that the guys in Pharcyde aren't afraid to make fun of themselves. What I don't really enjoy was some of the more horror/violence stuff on here, particularly in "4 Better Or 4 Worse"...it's just unnecessary over the top stuff. I also realize this a group album, but because there are 3 or 4 verses per song plus a hook and the intro/outro, it makes everything go on about a minute longer than it should. The styles and voices are all fairly distinct but none of them are a real individual standout so it's hard to get excited that there's gonna be a really killer verse or something. Anyway, this wasn't bad at all, and it shows a side of hip hop that is different from mainstream acts. It's worth being on the list for sure, but I don't think I'll be listening to it much later.

Well this has been my favorite hip hop album so far even if it is a bit rough around the edges. I really enjoyed the beats and flow on most of the tracks, but the lyrics definitely made me uncomfortable at times especially the transphobic verse in Oh Shit which otherwise would be a good song. I think I might also like these songs more on an individual basis as listening to them for an hour is a bit tiring and repetitive. A lot of the songs could have been a minute or two shorter and the album overall could have have been like 10 minutes shorter. Lots of filler in this one. I liked the influence of jazz and funk that made the music stand out. Favorite Track - Otha Fish Least Favorite Track - It's Jiggaboo Time (I know it's just a skit, but I felt real awkward listening to this at work as a white person) ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a perfect example of why this project should allow half stars or be out of 10. This album is a solid 7/10, it’s not quite at that 4 level, but seems better than a 3. Why did all songs in the late 80s/early 90s all have a verse about accidentally being gender tricked into having relations with another man? Whatever, 3

Enjoyed the jazzy production and the overall playfulness of this. Especially when contrasted with other hip hop from the era. Fewer guns and killing here. But it's a bit... Juvenile? Lots of smoking weed, lusting after women, jacking off, etc.

Lyrically it’s a solid showing. However, the early 90s hip hop just isn’t my style. It’s got to much of that uplifting, kinda heavy snare style I dont dig. I’m a fan of the dirtier, heavier bass driven southern hip hop.

Fun, but a bit too long. Did like it, but wouldn't listen to in full in the foreseeable future.

Nothing particularly appealing in this.

прикольный хип-хоп хорошие биты есть хит слушать фоном с кайфом 3.3

Funny, but there is an upper limit on that.

For the record, I don’t typically like hip hop, that being said, this album was okay. Fun and funky beats throughout and the lyrics weren’t incredibly vulgar like most hip hop albums. Although its not really my style of music, I also have no complaints. Standout Songs: Oh Shit Soul Flower Officer Pack Tha Pipe

Album #1,057 A very non-serious rap album, and I can appreciate that. The beats are good, and I always like when a rap group trades off verses as opposed to mainly one guy the whole time. I don't appreciate some of the crass and filthy lyrics, but it's par for the course with this type of music. I did laugh at the line in "Ya Mama" when he said "ya mama got snakeskin teeth."

Really fun trip-hop goodness.

“Passin’ Me By” is an all time hit, the rest of the album is decent.

действительно весёлые, но не знаю как меня за день (три) зацепить репом, очень сложная задача

eaRLY hiphop, too early? dann doch gegen Mitte ein paar classics...c

This was a bit fun! Great beats, MCs and vibes. Typically questionable lyrics, it was 1992 after all. Rated-R DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, maybe? No, that's rude. But, I'll knock a star off for it ageing pretty poorly lyrically... Yeah, lots of fun. I should listen to more hip hop.

fun but not all for me

Soul Flower was cool until someone said they had herpes. The production and energy on the second half of the album was consistently bumping.

I thought I’d never heard of this but I recognised ‘Passin’ me by’ straight away. Definitely a fun album I just wasn’t having a fun day when I listened so may need a revisit.

bit weird, didnt mind it.

My rating 2.6. Not for me. Mediocre rap.

Fun 90s rap.

I have no idea why this is/was considered "alternative" hip hop, but it's super fun. These guys played at the annual music fest at my school and I remember when they walked in and saw all the drunk college kids on the lawn, they just shook their heads. It felt a little long, but that's really just because I'm sitting at home listening to it while I work. If it was on at a party like it's supposed to be, it would be just fine.

For whatever reason, I missed the Pharcyde back in the day, but I figured this would be my thing. This era definitely needed more light-hearted, sillier hip-hop to counter the supremacy of gangsta rap at the time...but I found this a little *too* goofy. It definitely didn't need to be as long as it is (ugh, skits), but it's hard not to be charmed by it in general.

8.2 fresh prince of bel-air but I have never actually seen any of it Highlights: oh shit, soul flower remix, otha fish

The album is goofy without being dumb and cool without trying too hard.

Good grooves. Kinda goofy.

Good funky sound to this and fairly upbeat. Choice lyrics here and there, but pretty good overall

yes, refreshing as others have said

I didn't dislike this as much as most hip hop albums here. It was about twice as long as it needed to be.

I'm struggling to decide how I actually feel about this one. It has some interesting musical moments, solid early 90s hip hop vibes and all, but some of the songs are kind of annoying. I know it's part of the hip hop culture, but the inclusions of skits on an album always knocks it down a notch for me. Favorite tracks: Passin' Me By, Officer

Manque de cohérence entre les sons c'est golri mais pas hyper fan

A 3.5 for me. Pretty fun and not a bad listen but it was also quite long and if lost my interest towards the end a bit.

Enjoyed that. High 3

I liked it and found myself bopping but I don't think I'll listen to it again. It's amazing that this group I've never heard of still has 2.5 mil monthly listeners and is on tour.

Прикольно. Пэсинг ми бай тут, хорошая песня. Альтернативный рэп, нотки джаза(?).

Listedn to before 6.7

I liked the goofy toned songs a lot, but the political songs were my favorite. I liked the funky beats and the fun creative lyrics, and the female MC in the group was my favorite.

something's not grabbing me here - the pharcyde are obviously very talented rappers and while the beats are great, nothing is really being said? the closest to some commentary is the ending of the 3rd track maybe it's listening to two weeks of rock with one hip hop album; maybe it's having the entire catalogue of hip hop available in 2026 and that overshadows this album which was probably formative for a hell of a lot of people i recognise the passin me by sample and that'll fuck my head when i come back to this review standouts are On The DL, Passin' Me By, Return Of The B-Boy i need to come back to this to really articulate why I find it a middle of the road album

passing me by 1992 united states hip hop

3.5/5 Funny but also good. I like the jazzy vibe on some of the songs. And the interludes and skits in between really add something to the album. Overall I’m surprised that it was this good. Favourite songs: - I’m that type of nigga - Passin’ me by

This is not really my genre, but I liked it okay. It had a cool lo-fi sound to it and I did enjoy the 90's era hip hop sound. The rhymes and flow were good, and it sounded more modern that 1992 -- maybe like 2000s era. Overall enjoyed it. Three stars.

Skjønar at det er med, men blir mest eit klenodium kanskje?

Best 90s hip hop album yet

This was ace. Such a lot of fun.

This is a fun album. Songs like Oh Shit reminded me of my days of youth when my buddies and I were in the jamming session. Love some few moments when you could hear the jazz influence. But it could have been better.

É um bom álbum, achei pela época que foi gravado muito interessante na parte da musicalidade e batidas, apesar das letras polêmicas que hoje são bem mais criticadas.

Fun hip-hop record - generally not my style but closer to this than most

2.8 This fits in somewhere for me between de la soul and tribe called quest

Pretty nice hip hop album, nothing too special

Byłabym w stanie dać cztery, gdyby nie cały kawałek z żartami o Twojej starej. Ja naprawdę lubię hip-hop i zabawę słowem, ale to zdecydowanie nie jest mój rodzaj rapu. 6/10

3/5 + About as groovy as it's silly, really fun energy + I Like the way they use vocals chops + A lot of interesting ways how they use their rap and singing voices - Sometimes a little too edgy, also some really outdated humor - feels a little... irrelevant? - gets repetitive fast Fav: Officer, Oh Shit, I'm the Type of N***a, Quintons on the way (Skit), Pack the Pipe Least Fav: Otha Fish, Most of the skits and interludes, 4 Better 4 Worse

3.5 (56:41, 16 tracks (5 are skits), debut, 1992) hip-hop (alternative h-h, joke hip-hop) OK this band certainly sounds like they could have put out one of the better non-gangster alternative hip-hop albums of the 90s but they just couldn't stay serious. Here is my equation for how to build a Pharcyde 4/8 Arrested Development + 2/8 Will Smith + 1/8 Skee-Lo + 1/8 Afroman = Pharcyde Another commenter said "it's like a kid good enough to make the NBA but wastes his skills throwing suction cup dildos into increasingly difficult places to reach" - couldn't have summarized it better. Band literally raps about jerking off, vaginal fisting, a whole song (4:22) of Ya Mama jokes, eating brains, everything, it's just a hot mess. Perfect album if you're in junior high. Pretty much loved Quinton's on the Way (it's a skit but captures the damn album) Didn't hate the album (was on the west coast in 1992, never heard of them - but then gansta rap was king

Interesting. They funny. I have to be in the mood for them.

Sounded nice, not my personal style.

This was okay, some lyrics weren't great but the vibe was fine.

#785. Its fine, but what was the obsession with the fucking skits in 90s rap albums? 3/5: acceptable

I felt like the creativity of the lyrics came through in this one, and a couple of the songs were really nice. Better than I was expecting; have never heard of this group.

Fun classic hip hop.

Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde was… ok. Musically it could be really good at times, but for the majority of the album it’s pretty juvenile and just not to my tastes. “Passin’ Me By” is a classic though. I’ll give it a 3/5.

3.5. This was entirely new to me and very enjoyable.

You gotta love an album that sounds like a bunch of friends goofing around in the studio. The Pharcyde definitely don't take themselves too seriously. I mean, there's a whole song dedicated to 'Yo mama' jokes. The beats are loose and jazzy, and the flows are playful. I lost track of how many rappers there were in the group, but the album sounds like a party.

Solid early 90's new jack swing type rap. I dig the layers and smaller moments throughout the album that shows me that they put a ton of thought into the entire thing. I always appreciate that a lot when artists produce an entire record and don't take any moment of attention for granted. With that being said, the album kind of just went by. I grooved to it, I bopped my head, but I didn't feel totally moved by it. It's not bad at all, but it didn't blow me away. I do like how loose it felt.

4 Better or 4 Worse (interlude) n/a Oh Shit 3.4 It's Jiggaboo Time (Skit) n/a 4 better or 4 Worse 3.5 I'm That Type of Nigga 3.5 If I Were President (Skit) n/a Soul Flower (Remix) 3.3 On the DL 3 Pack the Pipe (interlude) n/a Officer 3.2 Ya Mama 3.4 Passing Me By 3.5 Otha Fish 3.3 Quinton's on the Way (Skit) n/a Pack the Pipe 3.2 Return of the B-Boy 3 Score: 3.3

Fun. Idk man it's old school rap, it speaks for itself. The rhymes were a little archaic but that's all part of the appeal. I wouldn't call this a daily driver, but I'll add it to a rotation for the 3 times a year I want to listen to old rap

You know, its not my thing but its not bad

Younger hip hop fans clown early records like this, mostly for the simplistic flow and sometimes silly lyrics I think, but that's what makes it so fun for me. Highly influencial. Rap and the people that listen to rap are way too serious nowadays in my opinion. You can tell they just had a blast making this music. 3.3 outta 5

Definitely better than it has any business being, for how stupid it is. You never know what you’re gonna get when you see a hip hop album with that style of album art. What do you call that? It’s like the style you’d see on a bootleg looney toons shirt where Bugs is smokin a cig or whatever.

Felt fun and fresh at the time (maybe it was the giant bong?), but now it sounds dated and juvenile. Extra star for nostalgia.

Maestro Fresh Wes vibes

Fun classic hip hop

Great flows over great beats, Just not my favorite verse of all time

i enjoyed some of the songs. others the beat was bland or the content seemed trivial

Was enjoyable but just kinda average

I didn't find this album to be anything special. There are a couple of tunes I recognize, but I didn't think it was transformative musically or lyrically. I thought that I might find this more up my alley, as I love Digable Planets and A Tribe Called Quest, but it doesn't have nearly the level of inspiration that either of those bands have.

tem umas letras que santo cristo eu escutava mto pharcyde quando ainda fazia academia, dá uma levantada boa na energia

Solid rap album with jazzy production. Better in second half

It's quite a contrast to the '90s West Coast Gangsta Rap sh*t. It's well produced, has great beats, and very jazzy arrangements. The lyrics are funnier, lighter, and tongue-in-cheek, and not that dark and aggressive bs that usually came with this genre then. They didn't age well, though.

Good and fun but not anything special

Good grooves/sound. Quite eclectic/mad. Worthy of more listens.

Wild and innovative sampling, layered tracks and free style rap3.5

Yea I mean pretty good, not sure there was much memorable on here. The skits were nice and jazzy, the rest was just a bit too goofy.

Not for me

This album sounds light, fun, and effortlessly groovy — definitely different from the gangsta rap style. The music feels bright and easygoing, as if the group is watching the world with a smile. Even though I don’t usually listen to hip-hop, I really enjoyed this one. I especially liked “Oh Shit” — it repeats simple phrases, yet somehow sounds really cool.

Real old-school hip-hop but with a bit more fun lyrics and a more up-beat beat than I'm used to from this time period. It was a fun listen and I enjoyed most of the songs. Its not the kind of music I would listen to daily though.

Cool album. Some interesting musical ideas but overall beats are really repetitive. If you're familiar with 90s hip hop at all you probably have a good idea how this record sounds

Fun, but no real lasting impression.

Surprisingly fun. Not my thing overall but enjoyable hip hop style rap.

Favorite Track: Otha Fish

well, not surprisingly, it's not one of my favourites. but as far as my love for rap-ish stuff is able to go, i've enjoyed this as it's downtempo, oldschool and straight-up cool.

Not to be taken too seriously. Pretty juvenile mostly. Smooth production with jazzy influences and a good flow. Of its time. Not sure why I’ve not listened before if it’s critically acclaimed. Only ‘Passin me by’ was familiar. The album is ok. A cut above Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (and Soundgarden)

Passable, not as much fun as other groups in this genre. Slightly annoying vocals after a while

actually not bad! some songs i like. i think i do prefer rap styles like this over mumble rap lets say.

Fun stuff

Nostalgic, definitely brings me back to a time when I really didn't understand music. It's fun and outrageous, but not really all that in my opinion.

A reminder when hip hop was fun, playful and had good samples. Not one my more favorite hip hop albums but a good listen still

Irreverent and fun! I pray that artists like Doechii will successfully bring back this dark humored 90s sound. It’s refreshing how much fun everyone is having with every track, and the music is good!
