Reviews (page 6 of 8)

I'm much more into 60s psychedelia these days but still struggle a little with Syd-era Floyd. That said, the teetering between lysergic enlightenment and mental illness is drawing me in today.

Had never listened to early Pink Floyd, and this was a surprise. Psych rock versus prog rock? And did anybody get a “The Who” vibe from this album? Perhaps I should have been stoned before listening. I really enjoyed flashes of it, but other times it started to drag a bit like during Interstellar Overdrive. Between a 3 and a 4. Probably a 3 because the tail end of the album isn’t as good as the start.

Should've known from the album cover art that this would be an extremely pyschadelic sounding and feeling album. Some good song on here but overall maybe a bit too weird for my liking. The addlibs are a little bit terrifying at times but they definitly feed into the overall vision of the album. Continuous rhythms cut up with odd noises all about the place and unusual guitar motifs make it an unusual listening experience. I'm sure it'd be great to listen to in the right setting but I feel as though today, currently in the library, it isnt the one. Some elements border on lines of similarity with a previous Miles Davis album with similar chaos and unordered noise, which somehow manages to work in creating a sort of auora about it. Very mysterious frequencies. Wrote this about halfway through; Second half is distinctly less musically weird but lyrically very strange still. In a very enjoyable way, almost beatles esque. Not what I expected from Pink Floyd.

Okay. Let’s drop some acid and make (or listen to) a record. Never heard this before. I was obviously expecting a lot more guitars. Fun, but Floyd is now Dark Side of the Moon or the Wall for me, so less of this and more of that preferred.

My stepfather is a huge Floyd fan, so I've been exposed to a lot of their music, but not their early stuff as much. No family road trip was ever complete without listening to The Wall from start to finish (usually twice). This feels different to their later works, as their sound clearly got more distinctive and 'prog rock' as they went on. I'm definitely more fond of their later sound. There's more whimsy and focus on the lyrics in this album I feel. This is still obviously a good dose of psychedelia though. It's probably a very good accompanying album to fellow 1967 release 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. As they were recorded at the same time at the same studio, that's hardly surprising. My top pick from the album is the opening track 'Astronomy Domine' but I also liked 'Lucifer Sam'. This is more of a 3.5 but I didn't enjoy it enough to be a 4. As an aside - what a cool album title! Thanks Kenneth Grahame.

Youthful upbeat sound compared to later Waters/Gilmore PF. Reminiscent more of zombies, animals, cream etc just a bit more psychedelic. Already very experimental with voice and recording effects as well as extended clatter (bike) à la money or time intros. Not the cleanest editing with some (intentionally?) choppy cuts here and there. Interstellar overdrive is right. Take up my stethoscope and walk, scarecrow, bike

I liked it

An odd oddity, oddity odd.

3/5 Album flows nicely from one song to the other

I was too sober to fully appreciate this album.

Was never a fan of psychedelic rock, and Pink Floyd isn't among my favourite bands. I enjoyed this, in general, and might listen again one day. Added, for that one day - whenever it is.

Interesting... not what I expected but not bad either. Pretty psychedelic-y

Not a huge Pink Floyd fan. But I still like rock albums more than most other genres

Definitely psych-rock and not what you'd imagine PINK FLOYD sounding like. I liked it more than I thought I would. 3.5/5.

5/10 There are some really cool tracks but way too much of this just sounds like evil circus music

Interesting to hear some of their early stuff. I liked Astronomy Domine but the rest of the songs weren't really my jam.

Fun poppy psych music but only barely hints at the potential of what was to come. As far as PF releases go this one isn't nearly as essential in my opinion.

Extremely not my thing.

eh - i don't think i was in the mood to listen to this today. it's challenging. i think it'd need a few listens, to which i am not willing to commit

Interesting first effort with greatness to come

Beatles better

Not bad, pretty weird. I'm not a big Pink Floyd fan but this was one of the more interesting albums I've heard from them.

Not the pinkiest Floyd

I definitely have a strong preference for proggy later Pink Floyd over earlier twee psychedelia Pink Floyd. This was an interesting listen, picking out the elements that would go on to become foundational in some of my favourite albums, but ugh some of these songs were grating, like "Bike" and "The Gnome" 😠 Fave track - "Astronomy Domine", perhaps, or "Interstellar Overdrive"

Interesting

3.5ish

The Piper was an interesting trip. Parts of it had a strong Beatles "Sgt. Peppers" feel. I'd go back and listen but maybe not before their other albums.

Very different to the stuff they are more famous for. I need to give it a few more listens

Another album with a stellar reputation that I feel at times like I'm trudging through. It's a draining 41 minutes with a singer who is constantly throwing curveballs. Barrett of course was approaching an unfortunate burnout with this record, and the music is for the most part unsettled and uneasy. Piper does have some stellar tracks, especially "Lucifer Sam" and "Chapter 24." "Interstellar Overdrive" takes a great riff and then almost immediately decides to test our patience. It turns out 9-minutes of mostly atonal noodling is something I'm not super into. Same goes for "Bike," which, yeah, I'll pass.

I'm not the biggest Floyd fan. I've heard it once before.

Would be very good high I’m positive. Sober it’s good and some great sounds, a bit experimental/psychedelic for sure.

not really my taste but it was nice

very psychedelic

Sid Barret was obviously ahead of his time, great musicianship, and its cool to see the grittier side of Pink Floyd, but it's definitely not my favorite Floyd album. Too much droning and space rock influence that now seems boring due to age. I did like the jazz elements though

Trippy but a bit of an adventure

Pretty good Psych Rock. The first two tracks along with Interstellar Overdrive were clear standouts, but the rest sort of breezed along with no real impact. It's good overall though.

What a trip. Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but taken in context with the psychedelic movement of the 1960s, it's a masterpiece. Would I listen to it regularly? No. But I will listen to it again.

There were flashes of their peak albums here, but I felt like it was kind of all over the place.

I can see where Pink Floyd turns into an all time band from this album, but more potential than execution on this. Also big name bands have higher expectations in my book

I am increasingly a fan of Pink Floyd

The only Floyd album I like. Still fairly proggy

Fleming and the note

“The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” by Pink Floyd (1967) As big a fan as I am of Pink Floyd, I’ve never listened to this, their debut album. So this will be fun. Lyrics have poetic moments, but are a far cry from their later work in quality. One must keep in mind that this is from 1967. The album is chiefly to be valued for its historical significance, clearly demonstrating the development of Pink Floyd toward their monumental works (“Dark Side of the Moon”, “The Wall”, etc.). This music is experimental, while only occasionally becoming random and chaotic—no mean feat in 1967. “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” is much more mature than, say, its contemporary rival “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” by the Beatles (sorry if I’ve offended anyone [not really]). Disciplined performances and tight cohesion, thanks to drummer Nick Mason and bassist Roger Waters (both of whom are too subdued in the mix—this deficiency would be remedied with a vengeance on “Dark Side of the Moon”). A note is appropriate here: The version of this album available on Spotify is the 2011 remastered version. It would be best to listen to the original mix on LP. I can only dream. Longtime fans of Pink Floyd will find this to be an engaging curiosity. Others will be satisfied to remember Pink Floyd for their later (and much better) work. 3/5

Seems like we have been given lots of debut albums recently. I've never really been into Pink Floyd but hopefully some of their later albums pop up here.

Fun, trippy album.

I knew that Pink Floyd started out as a psychedelic band, so this album wasn't coming out of left field. I'm glad that their tastes evolved.

Mon hit: Flaming. Je pense?

solid 60s debut.

This album definitely confirms the stoner vibe for me. ;) It wasn’t bad to listen to, but I still think it’s not going to be something I come back to over and over.

Kind of interesting but will stick with The Wall and Dark Side as the sound tracks to my cosmic journeys.

Discordant. I didn't know that Pink Floyd went back this far

Fav: Bike

I find the freshman effort one of the weakest (although comparison for Pink Floyd is a weird game given how radically the band changed over the years). Interstellar Overdrive is self-indulgent, knob-twiddling cacophony; the whimsy that plays well in Bike tips into mawkish silliness in Gnome. The seeds are there though.

Nice to know, from WIKI, Pink Floyd there debut album ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’ takes its title from chapter seven of Kenneth Grahame's 1908 novel ‘The Wind in the Willows’, which refers to the nature God Pan. The book focuses on four animals: Mole, Rat, Toad, and Badger. The picture from Mr. Toad triggered the memories of the videoclip of Paul McCartney ‘We all stand together’. This song was/is one of our families songs when we had a long drive in our car we sing along (more shouted along). But back to Pink Floyd. I can remember that as friends, in the early eighties, we came together to listen to Pink Floyd Albums and we loved it. It was so unique to us this psychedelic rock. This music took me down memory lane. I don’t think this is there best album, but it was nice as an suggestion to listen to it.

So trippy. I had heard this many times before but it is still just as weird (in a good way). Good album.

I liked it but due to all the pastiche pisstakes of the 60's hippie s singing about fairies and trolls it is a little hard to take seriously today

Despite being a big pink floyd fan, their early stuff is just too esoteric for me. Hurts to give Pink Floyd three stars

This was a weird album to break new headphones in with. That said, wasn't really my thing but I appreciated the weirdness on it, I guess. I really did not know what was happening for most of this.

Would be better if they were a tad less bri ish Dunno why pink floyd are lauded for another brick in the wall when clearly “bike” is their best fucking song, what a banger

A piece of music history, and the beginning of something out of this world. I often wonder how the fuck they ever got a record deal. What’s the opposite of easy listening? That’s what this is. It would have been unreal to watch this album being performed live, but the studio album is not really designed for human ears.

Connor: it's a mix between the later psychedelic experiences of later Pink Floyd albums with the earlier psych rock they made. I don't think their sound is quite as developed here - it's a fine album, but nothing that stands out on a first listen

I'm not sure why this is here. I remember listening to this when I was in my Pink Floyd phase in high school and...just going to the rest of their catalog. I think I listened to this a handful of times. There's Pink Floyd albums that deserve to be on here...Dark Side of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall...I'm assuming they're all here. Meddle is an amazing, underrated album of theirs and I much prefer it to this. From what I can tell, this just has the distinction of being their first album...but doesn't belong with the rest of their work that's considered great. I'm also certain that if you were a teenager in 1967 and listening to this for the first time, your mind would be completely blown...I'm not discounting the historical importance here. I was ready to give this a 3, but then I realized I'm leaning into the fact that I'm biased because...well, it's Pink Floyd. And I like Pink Floyd. But that doesn't mean I have to like this album. Had this been some random band on here, I wouldn't give it more than a 2. I doubt that when someone wants to listen to Pink Floyd that this is the album they reach for. Maybe some hardcore Pink Floyd fans do, but they're an outlier.

Sorry Pink Floyd but this one is a flop

Is it a wonder that a bad album sounds like a bad trip? 2/5

A couple classics

What the whack was this noise. That is NOT what I think of when I think of Pink Floyd. I didn’t get it.

Weird shit, had to listen to some other Pink Floyd songs to cleanse my palate after

Maybe some good moments but they would be interrupted by weird stuff lol. Wanted to give it a 3 but I think that’s just bc it’s Pink Floyd.

I didn't really love this Pink Floyd album. Spacey and weird but in a way that felt dated and British.

The Floyd at their goofiest. I respect it but I’ve never loved it.

I am definitely a fan of Pink Floyd but, I haven’t ever heard this album so I am pretty excited! Yeah, not really a fan of this. It kinda seems like a gone wrong Magical Mystery Tour. I’d recommend Lucifer Sam, Take up the stethoscope and walk and The gnome.

Cheesy psychedelic lyrics that sound like they were made up on the spot. Meandering tunes. I like Pink Floyd but this is the worst album in my opinion.

Had too much of a “70s” sound. Yes, I know that was when it was recorded, but it just feels like it didn’t age well.

There’s some ok stuff in the first half then it tanks pretty hard.

Those psychedelics were really something

Bit too all over the place for me

boring

i wanted to turn this shit off when the gnome garbage came on 2/5 but only because i know they learn

If you listen to this expecting to get some good pink floyd, this is not your album. I dont like it that much, from the old pink floyd i think their best job its still umma gumma or atom heart mother

This album is on the list because of its introduction/influence on early psychedelia, the future influence and success of Pink Floyd, and the legend of Syd Barrett. If you're not a historical psychedelia fanatic, then there isn't anything notable on this album. Pitchfork: 9.4 [40th Anniversary expanded edition] Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #253

I never went back to listen to the Syd Barrett Pink Floyd. Perhaps I need to give this a few listens before passing judgement, but it was mixed for me.

Pretentious stuff, no, I do like some Pink Floyd at times, but this album just isn't my vibe.

I do like getting weird with it, and this is getting quite weird with it. Is this serious or silly? Perhaps both. It reminds me in places, and I apologise to the heads for this, of the bits of the white album I like the least. Somewhat relentless. Enjoyed the piano. What’s the drug that makes you see little elves and had it been invented by 1967 and were they taking it? Am I being mocked? Started rolling my eyes about halfway through Interstellar Overdrive, which I think demonstrates remarkable restraint. If you announce you are doing a story about a Gnome then you should actually tell one, boys. 0 plot. And why are they rolling their Rs so much?

No sir, I do not like this. Should have known based on the title alone. Ugh.

Clásico

Take away the fact that this is the opening act from one of the 3 to 5 most legendary and monolithic bands of all time, take away the solid examples of pop craft, the audacity of some of the sonic experiments and the impressive sense of cohesion here, and you have to admit - this is pretty bloody silly, isn't it?

Unlistenable

Very British. Didn't hate it but I just really don't care about early Pink Floyd.

spectacularly failed to grab me. i dont really know how anybody was like "yes more of this fuck yeah". i liked Lucifer Sam

Rating: 4/10 If I could say something positive about Syd Barrett's songwriting in old school Pink Floyd, is that it's certainly unique. But that uniqueness does not result in making many songs that I find even remotely enjoyable. It actually feels like nightmare fuel for the most part, with this element that sounds like taking a psychedelic trip in a fun house, except you're getting chased by killer clowns. This actually seems to check out, because in doing some research, there was apparently a hyper-specific British genre called 'toytown' which featured whimsical, childlike elements with dark and ominous undertones...anyway. It's weird and experimental for sure. I do like the space and fantasy vibe it occasionally gives. But not the quirky creepy nursery rhyme shit. The first two tracks are better and Interstellar Overdrive is quite a journey

Just self indulgent prog

Everyone starts somewhere. While I can hear some of the creativity that would eventually make them such a cornerstone of the 70’s, I didn’t really feel this album.

Makes complete sense that this was being recorded in the room next door at the same time as Sgt. Pepper’s. But…I just didn’t really enjoy this. Definite seeds were being laid for what would be the dominant Floyd of the 70s, and I can appreciate the weird eclectic stuff happening here. But overall…I’ll pass.

Glad these guys evolved to something much more original and interesting. This just sounded like run of the mill 60s psychedelic rock. 2.25

I mean... I know I'm probably supposed to like this, but I don't. Some ok stuff but generally not enjoyable to my ear holes. 2/5

Isn't fey in here. It screams 60s. Enjoyable enough if your in the mood. Would imagine would get annoying on a lot of listens. Further in now it's annoying on the first listen. This has not aged well and between long rambling song and twee fairy tales it dosent really hang together Right lads how do we make this a big finish. Wind chimes, clanging and incomprehensible shouting

I’m not sure I understand the whole pink Floyd stuff first time I’ve ever properly listened to it, just shows music has evolved perhaps for the better

I'm WAY too sober for this, yikes.

I was completely unaware of this album and that a band that I like so much began with this. I tried twice and found nothing about this appealing.

Did not tickle me in the right place, but i'm also sick and not siiiiick so unsure of this

This is what haters think the beatles sound like

I’m sure it’s very clever and influential

It's ok ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This was the first time I’d explored this far back in the Pink Floyd catalog. And while you can definitely hear the elements of what would become one of the biggest bands in the world this one is SUPER trippy. Very late 60’s/early 70’s psychedelic.

Thank goodness Pink Floyd moved more towards progressive rock during their peak, because this did not at all capture my attention like their later records. There are pieces of what they'd become throughout, but I don't go for the more trippy/whimsical aesthetic from the Syd Barrett albums. A couple solid songs, but not much I'd care to revisit. Top tracks: Lucifer Sam, Interstellar Overdrive

Heirarchy of Floyd, from worst to best goes: Gilmour Floyd Barrett / Waters Floyd Waters / Gilmour Floyd At least this isn’t A Momentary Lapse Of Reason.

It felt like they were just trying to find their sound which is fine but it just sounds like a worse version of the beetles in this album.

we get it, you're on drugs

Yeah I can’t do this

Hey. Third Pink Floyd release, and an album I listened to for the first time only a year ago. I wasn't all that into this album and its messy, disjointed sound, truth be told. Roger Waters is definitely the superior front man of the band, though I'm hoping my opinion of this album will have improved now that my appreciation of psychedelic music has grown. Guess there's only one way to find out. Here goes. I'm still left scratching my head, sadly. I consider myself to be an enthusiast of strange and unconventional things, but this album is just too fucking weird and primitive for me. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn alternates between quaint, Beatles-esque psychedelic tunes and frenetic, wacked-out, garbled avant-garde pieces with absolutely no in-between. Because of how disparate these influences are, there isn't a moment where this album merges its eccentricities into a cohesive whole. I'm not sure if it's because I'm listening to a stereo remaster or not, but most of these tracks also have the vocals and instruments coming from only one ear of my headphones, which decimates whatever chance these sounds had of working together and, more importantly, pisses me off. That isn't to say that this album is all-bad, however. Some of the songwriting is adept, and buried in this menagerie of sound are some occasionally adept chord progressions. Overall, I respect this album for being different, though I didn't think it was any good. I don't need to consult the book for this album. For better or worse this is an unorthodox release and I like the idea of a Syd Barrett Pink Floyd album being on the list, particularly because of how storied and tragic his tale is. I cosign this inclusion.

Just calling it psychedelic doesn’t mean it can be directionless. Pink Floyd shines much brighter when they have a concept in mind (e.g. Darkside).

I guess w/o the psychedelics, this is underwhelming

Pink Floyd’s first album, featuring Syd Barrett and a respectable album duration-to-song ratio (probably the only album of Pink Floyd’s that does) with 11 songs in 41 minutes. Astronomy Domine: 5.5/10 Instrumentation isn’t too bad at the start, but it the last few minutes just seem like a waste. Lucifer Sam: 6/10 This riff sounds like a bond song. Matilda Mother: 5/10 I don’t like the vocals on this track. Flaming: 5.5/10 Pow R. Toc H.: 4/10 That intro is stupid. The song is pointless. Take up thy stethoscope and walk: 5.5/10 That title is funny. Interstellar overdrive: 6/10 That guitar riff is fucking amazing. If only they could write lyrics to it and make it a snappy 3 minute rock tune instead of a 9 minute instrumental. The gnome: 5.5/10 Don’t mind it, a short song about gnomes. At least it’s direct. 👍 Chapter 24: 5/10 The scarecrow: 5/10 Bike: 6/10 Don’t mind it.

Psycahdellic and cool

Not the best Pink Floyd album. Interesting to hear the early stuff with Syd Barrett. Awful noodle-ly.

Everyone has to start somewhere.

I don't get pink floyd, kind of annoying at times. other times nice harmonies

I've heard some people claim that early Floyd clears the four-or-five album 70s era widely considered to be their pinnacle. Those people are wrong.

Not particularly engaging listen

Well, that was a hot mess of an album. I don't think being stoned would have helped me enjoy this one.

I have loved every floyd album id heard to this point. Lots of 5s. This one is a struggle. I dont really like anything about it. Its hard to listen to. Even the guitars etc arent particularly interesting to me

Eh, I zoned out

Sorry guys but if you're going to be experimental can you bother making it sound good?

just pretty boring honestly, 2 stars, their later stuff is much more interesting but i guess you have to start somewhere!

Stand-out track: Lucifer Sam I knew that Pink Floyd was somewhat experimental, but never expected something to this degree. With this album you either get a Beatlesy sound or just straight up a bad trip. And what even was that ending...

Highlights: Lucifer Sam, Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk I don't know what to think of it. It was the last thing I expected to hear given what Pink Floyd is known for. As the record progresses towards its middle it sounds like a slower Magical Mystery Tour. But it wasn't all that fun nor did it grab my attention. The middle of the record is a giant shroom trip break, and then after that we go back to a retarded Mystery Tour. I do see some aspects of their future habits emerging doe. For instance Pow R. Toc H. does sound like some drawn out instrumental bit from Dark Side of the Moon. The lyrics are extreme gibberish and I didn't pay them any mind. Out of the heavily psychedelic tracks, Stethoscope stood out to me as a good one, and Interstellar Overdrive as a painfully drawn out one - it really requires you to be under the influence of something to find it enjoyable. Overall I found this to be a waste of time and too psychedelic for my taste. The twist with that trip in the middle was cool, but it was too abstract overall.

It's so dated. It's like listening to a soundtrack album of music from a really bad 60's movie that doesn't match what you're seeing on screen. I LOVE Pink Floyd, and I've listened to this before, but it's not good. Not enjoyable, wandering vocals, unmelodic guitars, spacy keys, weird yips, unnecessary percussion, etc. They're lucky they got a future record contract so they could mature and go on to make masterpieces just a few years later. There is NO reason this should make the T1001. It's #10 or #11 within their own catalog. Sure, it was the dawn of Pink Floyd, but that doesn't merit a spot on this list. No influence, no hits, no tracks that stand the test of time, no outstanding musicianship or vocals, it's just not worthy. 2 stars and that's generous.

As a pink floyd fan this album is not it, pretty disappointed with this one lowk. This sounds like if primus actually sucked. 3.9/10

I’ve liked some Pink Floyd, but I don’t know what the hell they’re doing here. A few perfectly decent songs towards the end keep this from only getting one star.

Strange and not really fun to listen to.

Prob my favorite band but this is a bad album for sure

I was not on enough drugs for this one. Sometimes sounded like the Doors

Another one I’m puzzled by its inclusion. Not very fun to listen to.

Some of the pop stuff almost works, the psych stuff does not. A mess.

Really interesting album, some songs very experimental. A few pop style songs which come across quite well. Pretty unsure what to give this between 2 and a 3 as it's not something I would go back and listen to again.

The best track was Bike. A lot of the rest was experimental but not engaging. Hard to connect this with the multiple masterpieces that follow.

3.5/10

You can tell Syd is around

Wishy washy Beatles LSD era B-Sides. Couple of solid tunes but largely just a bit silly and bland. They moved on to better things. 2.3/5.0 Best Song: Lucifer Sam

Leaving Arnold Layne and See Emily Play off this album was a choice. Not a choice I’d make. 5/10.

Their debut , too theatrical comical , too english too medieval i am a fanof the later albums not this

pretty boring.

Incredibly boring

sounds medieval (derogatory)

I did not like Syd's solo album and have generally been underwhelmed with a lot of the late 60's psychedelica on this list - including this album. The spacey sounds may have been out there at the time but just sound a little lame today. It all sounds quite generic - I gave it a couple of listens and nothing really grabbed me.

I love Pink Floyd. But the early stuff is fucking weird, almost comical. Don’t get me wrong, I love good acid as much as the next guy, and used to help friends adjust and re-correct during first trips. There was always the odd duck who’d take it too far, end up staring at a strobe-light for hours or simply lose the ability to speak. Syd was that Duck. Some said genius. I say lunacy… probably a bit of both. Makes this album a hard listen. Thank goodness they got better.

Normally enjoy Pink Floyd but this album was not it for me.

This is super early Floyd when Sid Barret was still with them.

Boring. Not sure why they're trying to be so silly and whimsical, I don't really get it. It'd probably be a better listen if you were insanely high

Not for me. Never loved the REN Faire aspects of psychedelia.

Very unfamiliar with this Pink Floyd. Nothing exceptional about it.

5.5/10 I love Pink Floyd and they’re easily a top 20 or 30 band for me, but I am not a fan of this record. There are a few tracks I really enjoy “Lucifer Sam” and “Flaming” especially, but Syd Barrett’s style just isn’t my thing overall. You can hear early hints of what Floyd would eventually become, and I respect how influential this ultra-psychedelic sound was, but personally it’s not for me. Favorite song: Lucifer Sam Least favorite: Bike

Best Track - "Astronomy Domine"

I was going to write a thorough review of why I didn’t enjoy this album, but the time spent listening was enough of my time.

I'm very thankful that my first Pink Floyd album that this list gave me was The Dark Side of the Moon. That album blew me away and I loved it. After reading reviews of this album, I had tempered expectations but was still looking forward to hearing it. I have no idea how this band went from this to Dark Side... These songs sound like something that would be on Tim and Erics Awesome Show in a skit about some weirdos making a children's show on psychedelics. The songs are hokey and I would have guessed that this band would have burned out very quickly. Anyway, interesting listen but I hated it.

Sounds totally different from my understanding of Pink Floyd. Not really my jam and I had high hopes! 2.4/5.0

Love Pink Floyd. They’re one of the great all time bands. Their debut, however, leaves much to be desired. It’s best understood as a signature document of the times. It is, in my view, the only psychedelic album worth listening to. All of the trappings of the sub genre are on display. Please look no further than the maddening jingle jangle freak-outs of Bike for proof. The boys clearly didn’t have a clue what they were really working towards on this record. All this being said, I adore the musicianship of Astronomy Domine and Interstellar Overdrive. The live recordings of these tracks are especially cool. They meander for upwards of 10 -15 minutes, exploring musical ideas, ultimately lingering far too long on each one - but the synchronicity between the musicians as they jam is impressive. The more disciplined Pink Floyd got with their sound, the better they became as an act. Still, this album mostly hurts my ears, and must be rewarded as such. ⭐️⭐️

The fact that this preceded Dark Side should be studied because this poop and Dark Side is amazing. There are whispers of the Pink Floyd I’m familiar with in here, but this sounds like Pink Floyd does The Doors x The Beatles, and I don’t like it.

They did not cook with this one

This is such a mess. Pink Floyd, when you do cross-genre music, it has to be good. Like, I know this is like early-ish psychedelic music, but it's got like weird noises one minute, piano solos in random places, surprise singing or shouting, nonsensical lyrics. Do one thing well or a lot of things mediocre but not a lot of things terribly pls. +1 star for Lucifer Sam bc I'm interpreting it to be about an actual cat and I like cats

Noodley and forgettable.

Far better pink Floyd albums than this

just not a floyd fan

Doesn't hold a candle to their later work. I will say I'm charmed by The Gnome though.

What a weird, trippy album. It wasn't terrible to listen to, but I didn't love it, either.

I’ve found out that I’m not a fan of psychedelia without hooks, with silly lyrics, annoying panning and nonchalant vocals. That being said, the songs are well written, they just don’t do anything for me.

This was an odd experience. I had never heard Pink Floyds debut album and I kind of wish I still hadn't. Knowing the heights they would hit with their later albums this one pales in comparison.

For what the album is trying to be, it's okay. Definitely not my type of music but it still feels well produced and made in an artisanal way. Favourite song: -

I did not like this. The psychedelia just grated and the accent slipped between twee english and pastiche mid atlantic. The production was called experimental, but just sounded like someone pressed all the buttons and twiddled all the knobs indiscriminately.

Started off sounding like music from the old Batman TV series. Then jumped into same old theatrical Pink Floyd. Listened before? N Saved tracks? N Favorite tracks? NA ⭐⭐ Didn't love, didn't hate

The bizarre noodling is just not for me. Bizarre Noodles sounds like a good band name, though.

Boring

Weird.

Floyd got better later.

This has not aged well - I suppose it was ground breaking in 1967, but now it sounds like a Spinal Tap parody. Please stop bringing this up as a "great" album - its a joke.

I thought it started off quite decently with the first few songs. Interstellar Overdrive is a mess and the album didn't really recover after that.

Suffering an acute lack of tunefulness 2.5

Forgettable, but not offensive.

Being groundbreaking for it’s time isn’t necessary condition for being a good album. 2/5

Bit too abstract for me Fave track: Matilda Mother

Another album I've never heard of by an artist I consider one of my dad's favorites and with whom I thought I was familiar enough to recognize the titles or artwork of any of their albums. Listening to this, I can sort of see why I don't know it. I'm not a fan of long, psychedelic, structureless instrumentals. This is filled with them.

I appreciate how weird this is showcasing Pink Floyd’s ambitions. That being said I don’t enjoy listening to most of it minus a couple tracks like interstellar overdrive, flaming. The opening track. Some of these tracks are straight up annoying like bike.

Too spacey n weird. Saved a song: N RYM: Y (#811)

What did I just listen to? A weird record. Funky, groovy, abstract, challenging, uncompromising, unconventional, unique. Vast soundscapes to dive in and drown in. This album feels suffocating. I can’t really cope with this. I feel alienated.

man I dont know what they were smoking but the one about Gnomes would require some serious substances

Not that much elevator music like usually comes from Pink Floyd. But anyway sounds dated to me and is sometimes on the edge to annoying.

This sounds like that bit at the beginning of Spinal Tap when they're an embarrassing flower power 60s pop act for some reason.

Really boring, surprisingly. It's no wonder boomers had to be on another plane of existence to enjoy this kind of repetitive, uncreative psychedelia slop.

Good if you would be high on drugs I guess.

Not connecting with me

Not their best work

Definitely prefer Pink Floyd’s sound with David hilmour but RIP says Barrett

I really love me some Pink Floyd. I have actually spent a good amount of cash seeing an extremely good Pink Floyd cover band (what up Australian Pink Floyd) on more than one occasion. But I just cannot get down with the Syd Barrett and not David Gilmour version of Pink Floyd.

Wow, I didn’t like that at all. Crazy how much I feel they changed from this first album to dark side or wish you were here.

Some moments are really cool, Bike is great. Too much of the time, it’s not.

Not really a Pink Floyd fan, but I really didn’t like this.

I’m not mad about this album, I’m just mad at the list. If this Pink Floyd album of all Pink Floyd albums made it (it’s probably like their 6th or 7th on the list) then how many other well deserving albums with zero represented artists let alone genres didn’t make the list. What a poorly filled spot. Ig it was their debut or something. Buns debut though honestly, glad they got somewhere eventually.

The weird to focused ratio too far off

Weird and not real music

Liked their 70's albums. This trip in to psychedelica no so much. May have been ground breaking at the time. Hasn't aged well in my opinion.

A bit too pretentious for my taste, lacking guts

I'm sure this hits crazy if you're on LSD. Some cool stuff in there but yeah not something I'd throw on to listen to again any time soon.

Pink Floyd's four album run from Dark Side of the Moon through The Wall is as good as music can get and includes some of my favorite albums of all time. That's the Pink Floyd I know. I'd never listened to this album before, and I definitely won't listen again.

I believe this is before David Gilmore joins and it really sounds like a different band. I do not like this era of 60’s British bands. Everyone is trying to be whimsical and sing about Alice in Wonderland and other trippy bullshit.

I hadn’t heard any of the early pre-David Gilmour Pink Floyd before, so I was very curious about this. I have to say, I didn’t care much for it, and was a bit disappointed. Two stars.

Background noise jam session. 3/10

I feel like I needed to be on drugs to enjoy this.

Good thing they didn’t give up after this dud

A little too weird acid 60s for me, kind of like that one Kinks album that was on here. But I do think this was pivotal for them as a band to push the envelope into more heavy, melodic psychedelic music, the Floyd we all know and love

Not a psych rock person, but fine for what it was. One star docked off for the really annoying quirky vocals (reminds me of Zappa, that is an insult, I hate him) and those stereo channel tricks everyone was doing at the time where the left and right channels randomly start flickering on and off, I'm sure that was cool on a set of nice speakers in the '60s but I listen to music on headphones and it genuinely pissed me off

# Album Name: The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn # Artist: Pink floyd # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Big fan of pink floyd......post Syd era. I've listened to this briefly before. it wasnt the pink floyd i knew and loved but i gave it a chance again with this listen. Honestly, its psychedelic nonsense. You need to be on drugs to connect with it. Maybe it would be great. But as someone sitting here with a cup of tea at 6.38am in the morning, it doesnt really appeal to me. Theres a couple of decent tracks - Astronomy Domine & bike. The breadown of sid becomes apparent as the album goes on. It sounds desperate. The only thing i can say is thank you to sid for what became one of the best bands of all time....without him. I'd be gutted knowing that as sid, but it is what it is. # Top Tunes: Astronomy Domine / Bike # Would I listen to it again? Dont think so

I gotta be honest y’all this one sucked like donkey ass. We can’t be putting every Pink Floyd album on this list just because they’re Pink Floyd. And here’s the thing, this isn’t me hating on PF. This project got me to finally listen to them and I REALLY liked their other albums. I got the hype! But this? This is plodding, tuneless nonsense. The worst type of psychedelic rock. Nursery rhyme lyrics and irritating noise. I’m glad they moved beyond this. Honestly it deserves one but I’m grading them on a curve because they’re Pink Floyd.

pink floyd was a big feature of my highschool era of listening to music. never fully got invested in them for the problem that this album has too- for me, the songs are too damn long. though i can acknowledge that's a me problem. it gave the who sell out meets sgt pepper's.

Piper at the gates of mimsy whimsy

Oddly enough I had Syd Barrett’s solo album earlier this week and now this one. Neither is anything I want to listen to a second time. But I now know a little bit of music history in learning about his sad story.

Sorry, Floyd, Renn faire was way overdone by everyone. I got a wall with that genre.

A good album to put on in the other room and shut the door. I would open said door to hear Bike, but shut it again around the 2 minute mark. If you're looking for something to listen to muffled, this may be the one for you!

OK, this isn't my favorite Pink Floyd album although hardcore Floyd fans say it's amazing. I'm so glad they evolved into what they became, because this is like music you'd hear walking and dancing with hobbits. 2/5

Eerie and something they made while high after someone’s death

I like Pink Floyd, bit I did not really like this. It was interesting as I can hear the beginning of their sound. But this one just didn’t do it for me.

More like the Gates of Yawn.

big name, meh album

I like See Emily Play and Arnold Layne, but I don't think the album effort worked out. There are some interesting, and even good, ideas here. Unfortunately they're surrounded by a lot of other, deeply annoying, ideas.

I just don't like 60's floyd, you can hear the pieces, but the 60's is still there and eh.

Kinda acquired taste, especially the instrumental pieces

I kind of hate Pink Floyd with Syd Barret. I don’t know why, it just is not something I can get into. 2 stars because it IS Pink Floyd, but that’s a stretch.

You can really tell this is early work from a band that hasn't really found it's groove. I feel like they're trying too many things at the same time, but not all of them are really working for me.

The kinks off their heads

This was Pink Floyd? You could've fooled me. This is their debut album and before they found their more popular sound, which brought me a lot of clarity. This album is still progressive and art rock, as their signature sound, but has more psychedelia than I anticipated. But this is not the Pink Floyd that crafted beautiful and soaring songs. It was a slog. Like lots of artists around this time, their debut or first few albums weren't remarkable. For many, they required several albums to find their footing. But why is this on the list? There's already a lot of progressive music here, and there's nothing much remarkable.

I can confidently say I have never heard Pink Floyd's debut album before, or any song from it. And I think I was okay with that. Yes, this is THE Pink Floyd, but this is several albums before they rose to power. The Pink Floyd that everyone knows is unique and a powerhouse. This early version of Pink Floyd is nothing noteworthy, in my opinion; they sound like every other psychedelic rock group from this time period. I just really didn't enjoy this.

Pink Floyd at their best are magnificent, when they're not at their best it's like The Beatles at their worst.

Huomaa hienosti mitä huumetta kyseisellä aikakaudella on biisejä tehdessä vedetty.

Vähän liian huuruissa on kyllä tämä levy tehty.

I like other Pink Floyd stuff, but not this. 2/5

And remember kids… don’t do drugs

Although the album showcases impressive compositions and technical skill, I found it more irritating than enjoyable. Many of the tracks felt like a meaningless cacophony of sounds, and the lyrics didn't capture my interest at all. Perhaps I'm missing something, likely the LSD.

It’s too artsy for me, except for 3 just silly songs that don’t fit at all. Maybe just too many drugs were happening

I was just about giving this album the benefit of the doubt up until Grimble Gromble the Gnome. It’s a low score, but there will be several other Pink Floyd albums on this list to get a 5 ⭐ from me

Pink Floyd before they found their sound. For late 60's it sounds pretty advanced I guess with all the experimentation going on.

Best Song: Bike. This song has a kind of appealing inanity to it. Worst Song: Pow R. Toc. H. That intro was just annoying. Overall: I certainly I understand that this album, among Pink Floyd's other albums, were extremely influential in how rock (progressive and otherwise) developed in the time since... But that doesn't make this all that fun or revelatory to listen to in 2025. A lot of it is cacophonous or discordant, meandering around in a dozen different directions, without any seemingly great reason for being so.

I like Pink Floyd but this, not so much.

I would count myself as a Pink Floyd fan but this isn't the version of PF I want to listen to. Rambling psychedelic jams with unicorns is not floating my boat. I know the future version is a lot better.

Disjointed in an unpleasant way. Pass.

Just boring, not it, some songs bad and some ok.

Not at all my thing. I guess I don't love where Pink Floyd started, or really where they ended up, but some of the stops along the way were pretty good.

I am thankful this was not Pink Floyd's final form because this is pretty shitty.

Some interesting parts. Overall, not a massive fan though. Though, I respect the creativity

Maybe too dated. Sounded kind of artsy fartsy teenagery

Much has been said about the genius of Syd Barrett. And this shows some of it. Unfortunately, See Emily Play and Arnold Layne aren't on this, although Bike and Astronomy Domine are. Still... This is very much a band still trying to find its style and footing. It's historically important because it's the debut of one of the most influential and impactful bands ever. And because it's the only full band album with Syd Barrett. But as an album, it's very eclectic and erratic.

top 3 overrated band of all time, the drugs must have been great back then to appreciate this crap

Yep, I can see why I've never heard of this album by Pink Floyd.

I listened before earlier in my years cause I was curious what was the Pink Floyd I love roots. This album is only good because you are so very grateful of what they went on to become.

This was pretty horrid if I’m honest

its weird but I guess that was tk be expected

the songs seem like they're malformed, like maybe I'd like them better if I was on LSD. Other than Animals and a couple songs of Wish You Were Here there isn't any era of Pink Floyd that I enjoy. I had hopes that the Syd-Barret album would be different (I think his solo album is pretty OK), but this is tedious as all get out.

I'm a huge pink floyd fan, but this album lacks what IMO makes PF great: meaningful lyrics

where is roger........

Self indulgent, not particularly good, or interesting. Stuck this on during a slow tempo 7k run which actually did me very well. To my surprise I started really enjoying the final songs and then I realised Spotify had gone onto artist radio.

Wasn’t really rocking with this album, just felt like generic Beatles and not enough like Pink Floyd

The psychedelics are strong with this one. 2/5

Pink Floyd's "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" consists of a series songs full of disjointed chords that transcend the boundaries of traditional psychedelic music, delving deeply into the eccentric psyche of Syd Barrett. The album's most compelling aspect is its foreshadowing of future works, showcasing innovative sampling techniques, a rich variety of sounds and chords, and an expansion of production standards, and also including a jazz-blues piano interlude reminiscent of the use of "The Great Gig in the Sky" on "Dark Side of the Moon." "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" is not a great, or even good, album - it is highly experimental, raw, rough, and whacky, likely appealing to a niche audience. However, I recommend listening to "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" at least once, if only to understand the origins of Pink Floyd and gain insight into their musical evolution.

All I could think about was the psychedelic era scenes in This is Spinal Tap.
