Reviews (page 7 of 8)
I'm sure it was innovative for 1967 but it mostly just seems noodly and ridiculous now.
After 3 listens all the way through: not really my jam. It has some cool sound bytes spread throughout that are funky and might fit well in an indie flick. However, the concept hasn't really landed on me in a meaningful enough way to have appreciation for the work. Maybe it's just supposed to be super drugged up and jagged-edged and perhaps I'm just missing the point (wouldn't be the first time). For now, it's a 'no' from me.
No thank you, not for me at all
None of the things about Pink Floyd I like and many things about hallucinogen-era Beatles that I dislike
Kind of a deep dive into Pink Floyd. Not one of my favorites.
Not into this. Too chaotic at times.
Unexpectedly unimpressive
Huh
I was very excited to see this one because the last time I listened to it was in HS and at the time I remember thinking it was trash, and maybe my evolved mind was now ready to appreciate it. Nope. Still bad. Hints of what was to come from PF, but nothing of value here. Seeing this live, in 1967 on acid would be great experience I'm sure, but it does not translate for a sober Dad while at work. Adding a point for innovation/originality.
In a nutshell: (Krusty the Klown voice) "What was I on?" Syd must have been dropping some strong acid while Pink Floyd was recording this album. This debut presents their instrumental prowess, refined in albums to come. In saying that, I shouldn't give the band a free pass because "this is where it all started". It's surreal. Overall: 4/10
Experimental and unrefined. But for the time I imagine influential.
I feel like I got a contact high just listening to this album. I just did not get into this album. It was disjointed and confusing. One minute we were in a James Bond movie (Lucifer Sam). Then I was traveling across a mythical medieval land (Matilda Mother) followed by being chased by howling monkeys (Power R. Roc. H). Then we traveled to Outer space (Interstellar Overdrive) followed by standing in a field either being a scarecrow or watching a scarecrow (I feel like it was a metaphor but because of the LSD trip, it might have just been about the scarecrow). There were bits I liked, Interstellar Overdrive had a good bass line, and Stethoscope was a good 70s rock song. But the overall disjointedness of it was somewhat jarring and not one I would put in the rotation.
I didn’t even know this album existed, which makes me feel like a horrible music fan haha. Especially since it’s the only album led by Syd Barrett!! Unfortunately it’s TOO psychedelic for me. The strange noises are no good when played loudly, and the screeches kill the eardrums. Some songs were quite nice with the pink Floyd sound we all know, and the progression of each song was credible. Unfortunately not an album I would listen to regularly though. Listen again: probably not Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song:
Syd Barrett era Floyd was super weird. Their sound developed so much as time went on. This album is super strange and experimental. Not really for me, but important in the grand scheme of things. Favorite songs: Bike, The Gnome, Lucifer Sam Least favorite songs: Pow R. Toc. H, Interstellar Overdrive 2/5
De instrumentale numre er de eneste, jeg virkelig synes er noget værd på det her album. De er til gengæld rigtig gode
Very boring. Not sure I needed to hear this at all.
I'm just not into the Barrett years. I fucking tried, OK!?
Dull. Very dull.
4/10 After really enjoying the wall, this was a huge disappointment. Not good. Surprisingly basic psychedelic rock that was wildly self-indulgent. Lyrically it was childish. Songs like Bike show it was on purpose and they knew what they were doing. Found myself rolling my eyes in some of the extended psychy instrumental sections. Well put together and the keyboard stood out as glueing it all together. Best: Bike
I did not care for this album. It was a difficult listen for me. Too off the wall and weird. Their sound effects were cringey. The use of nursery rhyme-sounding lyrics that devolve into psychedelic cacophony was off-putting. This one was not for me.
Very psychedelic, not very fun when not on psychedelics. It's pretty free form, but not in a way that shows off any particular talent other than crafting a dreamscape. The music is cliche and subpar and listless. Definitely like their later stuff far more. Not even sure which of these songs I would add to my playlist, none of them really work as "songs".
Astronomy Domine - we get it; you're experimental! Lucifer Sam - I mean it's alright? Matilda Mother - love the key changes. Flaming - pretty dull but I love to see 'yippee' featured gleefully in a song. Pow R. Toc H. - we get it; you're still experimental! Take Up They Stethoscope and Walk - sounds more like a jam session than a song but great name. I like the dissonant harmonies at the end and the abrupt stop. Interstellar Overdrive - are people really listening to this on the regular? Or is it a one and done "such talent! On to something tuneful" type sitch? The Gnome - ok now THIS is music (but in seriousness what a delight). Chapter 24 - forgettable. The Scarecrow - same. Bike - saaaaaammmmeeee.
Wasn't my favorite. Kinda bored me, more improvisation than I like.
I'm not listening to Pink Floyd. I'm here to listen to cool albums I wouldn't find out otherwise. Everyone knows about Pink Floyd; it's not worth the minutes spent spinning.
I might have enjoyed this more if I'd been stoned. Or tripping. But I’ve never been stoned, unless you count the time I took Percodan on an empty stomach. And I think it goes without saying that I have never — what’s the term? — dropped acid. And so all I can say is “what the fuck?”
2.5
This was a struggle to get through 1.5
As someone who never really heard anything from the Rolling Stones, I can safely say I did not expect a band that is simply doing their best Beatles impressions. I didn't enjoy it, but I also didn't expect it.
Roger Waters actually played bass and tambourine on 2 Houmous & Chutney records. The only times I ever let anyone other than myself play the tambourine in the band. Regret it to be honest. He was awful. 2.1
Very unremarkable
Hints at good things to come, but misses the mark.
I, uh, hmm. I didn’t like it.
All time favorite band, but not a big fan of psychedelic Pink Floyd
It feels sacrilegious to vote this so low, given its cultural significance and how much I love later Pink Floyd, but I just don't really rate their earlier stuff - I find the psychedelic melodies a bit grating! Spirit of Woodstock, please forgive me etc
Trippy but not really my speed. I like some Pink Floyd from other albums.
This should not be on the list. It is nowhere near Pink Floyd's best. As a fan, I'm comfortable saying that it is of historical (almost archeological) interest only.
Love Pink Floyd but not my favorite
Pink Floyd early is just some psychedelic bluh
Felt kind of experimental, more annoying than anything
A very generous score. Would not listen to this again.
Oh, ya weirdos—I really, really love Animals! This, less so.
17/12/24 I get what Pink Floyd have done, I just think this is a really poor, boring album.
Psychedelic, slow early floyd
Idk, I went into this one expecting to like it, but I kinda just found it more pretentious and annoying than anything? 2.5/5
I never really understood psychedelic music I guess because I wasn’t off my head but this just doesn’t do much for me
For decades I’ve tried to understand the appeal of Pink Floyd, and still just don’t get it. I find their music to be middling at best, and boring at worst. This album kind of was jumping between those two spots the whole time. I was just happy it finally ended.
The best thing about this album is that the Acid Head who founded and lead the band left and got professional help and we got Dark Side of the Moon. This sounds very much like a band experimenting and floundering around, trying to find its feet.
This is like a superhero's origin story if their origin story was 'I took a lot of drugs before I learned how to make great music'. I mean, it's not dreadful, but it's not the Pink Floyd that found fame.
Not at all what I was expecting from Pink Floyd's debut. I knew that the Syd Barrett era was different, but I was really not prepared. It's absolutely whimsical. Yet, as someone who enjoys psychedelia, it just didn't do it for me. It's charming, but a bit of a slog. I picture the jammier of the tracks in particular being quite revolutionary at the time, but I feel that they've aged. Fav tracks: Flaming, Pow R. Toc H., Chapter 24
A lot of people love Pink Floyd. With a couple of exceptions, I don't get it. And I didn't get this either, odd spaced-out lyrics and... unconventional chord progressions. I lost interest after about the third or fourth track.
I'm probably too boring for this. I like some Syd but not this one.
I remember buying this back in my youth when I was heavy into Floyd. Wasn’t what I expected of course and I hated it. Giving it a full lusten with adult ears, not much had changed
I love some of Pink Floyd’s work but this one did not do it for me at all. 2
I guess this album was very influential. I didn't like it.
It's not terrible, just not very exciting or interesting to listen to. The progress they made from this first album, to their rest is huge.
4.5/10
Плохо помню, честно говоря. Но процент говорит сам за себя 18%
Certainly not the album that defined their sound, nor one which would be critically acclaimed should they not attain their later success. A stepping stone along the pathway, but I need to hear some of those Gilmore shreds.
Given the hype around this band I was looking forward to giving this album a go but unfortunately it was largely unlistenable tripe!
if you're gonna be a drug band you should at least be unhinged. that's the problem with later Pink Floyd. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
I won’t be banging down the door to listen to this again, but Syd Barrett brings an element of fun to Pink Floyd that makes them palatable in a way that later Floyd is not.
It was just okay. I didn't hate it but I'm in now rush to listen again.
Formative Pink Floyd is interesting, but hard to say anything past that. Ultimately, if you separate out who put this album out from the music itself, it's just not that good. It's interesting because it's Pink Floyd and a chunk of their history, but the music isn't anything anybody NEEDS to hear in their lifetime. This band has much better albums. This one is a lot of psychedelic wankery (and not even their best of that type) and some silly songs closing it out. If it wasn't Pink Floyd, it would be a long forgotten album.
Not everyone’s debut album has to be great and this one to me just didn’t hit. They for sure figured it out and became amazing but this just wasn’t it for me.
Not really my thing
Not a touch on the stuff they made just a few years later.
I have no patience for these boys with this album. The breaking point was that Gnome song. I like the rest of the Pink Floyd I've heard but i just found this very trite and a waste of time.
So many better Pink Floyd albums. They hadn’t figured themselves out yet.
It sounds a bit Beatles-ey at times, but it's still Pink Floyd weird in certain places. It's interesting as a beginning point for a band that would ultimately create some truly great albums, but they are clearly not there yet.
i have what feels like my whole life tried to get into pink floyd. this didn’t do it could i write poetry to this? n
Dark side of the moon it aint
You can just feel this album devolve along with Syd Barrett. His fall is a tragic and sad story, triggered by drug abuse like too many other young artists, but different from those as the abuse doesn’t end in an early death but rather a long, drawn-out period of depression and reclusivity. I like post-Barrett Pink Floyd much better - I don’t care for his vocals or the excessive psychedelic abstractions - but “Piper” and other early Floyd aren’t for me. Halfway through “Interstellar Overdrive” I just couldn’t take it anymore.
Maybe important in terms of showing where Pink Floyd came from and their development. But not great music and not a great album.
As I said when we got the Syd Barrett solo album, Pink Floyd was better off without Syd.
Säger bara The Gnome, underhållande men inte bra. En 2a för att de ändå försökte.
Kanske lite banbrytande när det kom, men det här är ofrånkomligen flera pinnhål under det Pink Floyd man älskar.
Shine on you crazy diamonds.
152/1001 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑
Favourite song - Lucifer sam
It was ok. I guess I'm not a Pink Floyd fan anymore...
wanted to like this and it's not even like bad in any way it just took me several sessions and retries to get through because it is SO dull. sorry pink floyd.
Belli sti Beatles travestiti da Pink Floyd
Interesting from a historical perspective with glimpses of the brilliance that would follow...but not a great album. Doubtful they would have evolved in the same way if Syd Barrett hadn't departed due to his mental health issues...
Listened to before, but not for a long time. One of the more memorable albums from Spın̈al Tap's psychedelic period. Syd Barret's sad story makes for great mythic status, but it's clear on this album (for which he wrote most of the songs) that his loss has been overstated. Pink Floyd simply wasn't very good until David Gilmour joined the band. "That cat's something I can't explain"
Interesting, but kind of uneven and sounding pretty dated. I like Astronomy Domine and Interstellar Overdrive which still get played fairly regularly. Mathilda Mother was a good one I've ever heard before.
Liked Song Astronomy Domine
I did not care for this.
I like Pink Floyd, but this was a bit weird, even for them.
I like this more than the Roger Waters era for what it's worth but I don't really care for Pink Flyod in all honesty. Interstellar Overdrive is so overblown and tiresome. I'm down for a long track but I want it to actually develop some ideas. This one had so many short repeated ideas that did not serve an 11 minute length. Gnome and Take Up Thy Stethoscope... were super fun on either side of it at least.
Pretty good background study music. Lively energy. I do wish there were more 'traditional' lyrical songs, but the instrumentals are great.
Only liked a couple songs, but the Spotify radio that came on after the album finished was excellent.
......they got better.
This is pretty bad
The cover makes me more uncomfortable than some of the psych jams. It was likely more monumental a release at the time, but I don't get the feeling like it has grown in stature over the course of the years. Although the myth of Syd Barrett has. As I listened, some of it was cool but I did look at the track listing / run time on occasion just waiting for things to end.
An ok album
I remember liking this album when I first heard it, but now i think I skipped through the few tracks I liked - namely the first two tracks plus Interstellar Overdrive. It's still the only Pink Floyd album I would even attempt to listen to, and it is an interesting snapshot of the time, with a few rocking riffs. But anyone who claims Syd was a genius has clearly never listened to Bike. Very silly.
A little left of the dial even by my flaky standards. It strays into BONKERS mystic and mushrooms territory.
Floyd gets way better after Syd Barrett!
An endless dirge, I'm glad they involved into something much better than this.
"Mom, can we have the Beatles?" "We have The Beatles at home" - *drops acid
Sorry, I know I'm supposed to worship the tortured genius of Syd, but Floyd's debut does nothing for me. I have little patience for the precious British whimsy of it all, especially combined with severely undercooked psychedelia that's not nearly on the same level of other artists coming out around this time. I will continue to give out other high scores for Floyd, but this won't be one of them. 2/5
Not a huge Pink Floyd fan and this was a bit too out there for me.
Not much to like here. I do like some Pink Floyd but this one is pretty lame.
Standard psychedelic 60s stuff
They were definitely on some of that good stuff.
2.5
Loved this when I was younger but its nonsense now
This is a big old mess. Tolerable as it is a precursor to the masterpiece dark side of the moon. Chemically induced weirdness coupled with an impending psychotic break. Tough to get into while driving to work but everything has its place.
1.5 - Yeah, not really sure how to even attempt to enjoy this. Do I need to be really really high? Very Cambridge
I like the cover art. Interstellar overdrive stressed me out.
Trippy and experimental is what I would say about this album and I mean that in a good way. I'm a huge pink Floyd fan but this is not one of their albums I visit much. It's a little to our there for me but when I do listen to it, I always wonder how this band would've evolved had Syd been a part of it.
A project which might have better captured the early Floyd freewheeling spirit if not for two aspects: one, EMI producers not understanding the band's style, and two, Barrett's rapidly declining mental health. There are moments of brilliance here and there, but overall too much of the project is wasted on waffling away at discordant tones or unappealing gimmick tracks which overutilize studio trickery - also worth mentioning is the downright heinous stereo effects popping in and out on occasion. The band is solid, but hearing songs which sounds like the whisperings one would hear deep in the midst of a heavy acid trip is not entirely appealing. Not necessary for enjoying later Floyd works.
This album was okay. It's nice to listen to their earlier music, but it went on for a bit too long at times. Some of it was pretty fun and inventive. In particular, Bike stood out to me.
man this is not it. sorry 2/5
I don't get it.
This was a little to preogressive for my taste.
Not a big Syd Barrett guy…. Sorry…
Ngl there’s like two decent songs, rest is ass
Too experimental for me - 4/10
2 weird and out there 4 me 4/10
3/10 - Pow. R. Toc. H. was weird. Interstellar Overdrive was long and bad. The beginning of bike sounded normal and the lyrics were strange "I know mouse and he hasn't got a house I don't know why I call him Gerald." And then the song ends with geese calling.
I typically like experimental stuff. This album does the experiment part well, but unfortunately just doesn’t sound good. 4/10
Insufferable
nöö
Other bands have done this better.
The Piper At The Gates of Dawn must have been shocking in 1967. The recording of a man losing his mind. A mix of instructional freak outs and childish pop songs. Surprisingly it’s the pop songs that let the album down for me. I think Barrett at his best during the LSD freak out instrumentals. Sam’s Lucifer and Bike are the best of the more conventional songs. 5.9/10
This might be OK if I took a double dose of gummies...
No thank you - has a little bit of edge beyond the experimental psychedelic madness, but mostly experimental psychedelic madness. Not much to grab onto unless you're in the throes of an acid-induced fever dream. 2.5
So mid it hurts
Was not high enough to enjoy. Too much craziness going on for my typical "background of work" style of listening.
2 - I knew this was gonna sound different than their famous stuff, as I've heard some of this before, but damn, this was out there. It had good moments here and there, but the majority of it felt aimless and started to grate on me. Bike was funny though.
THIS is Spinal Tap. Psychedelic aspects aside... Did nobody in the band figure that something about Syd was way the f*** off when all this was going down? I'm sorry about what happened with Syd: nobody deserves that. But from a musical perspective: thank heaven he went off on his own trip. Songs like "Astronomy Domine" and "Matilda Mother", which start off strong, end up taking weird left turns that diminish the strong elements. Just say, "no", kiddies.
Too much prog rock
Favourite Song: The Gnome Blended into the background a lot which didn't quite grab me much. However, the more instrumental songs were interesting.
So, as a die-hard fan of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall," my journey through "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" was like stepping into a time machine - one that was a bit tough to navigate. This album is a testament to Pink Floyd's roots, showcasing the embryonic stages of their evolution. It’s dominated by Syd Barrett's unique style, a stark contrast to the band's later works. His influence is a constant presence, offering a glimpse into what Pink Floyd was before they became the band that many of us know and love. It’s a piece of history that shows where they started and hints at where they were going. However, the vibe of the album is undeniably dated, and at times, it ventures into territory that feels, well, corny. The psychedelic sounds and whimsical lyrics about buttercups and unicorns are far cries from the introspective and philosophical themes of their later albums. It's like listening to the teenage diary of a band that would grow up to write epic novels. I would recommend "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" to Pink Floyd fans as a once-off listen. It’s important to experience where the band came from, to appreciate the full spectrum of their artistic journey. But once you've taken this trip back to the 60s, you might not feel the need to take it again.
Not in the right mood for this one. Too stressful. Not chill
What a coincidence, two days ago I saw a Pink Floyd tribute band playing exactly the show PF did in 1973: after the break the 5 star album Dark Side of the Moon and before the break endless psychedelic songs of 15 minutes, boring me to death. This album fortunately has shorter songs than the 1st part of the concert, but has the same effect on me, utterly bored. 2 stars the maximum I can give.
I wanted so much from this album when it opened with huge swells of gritty, scuzzy guitar, and was prepared for forty minutes of solid psych rock. Imagine my disappointment when the guitar immediately faded after the opener and the whole LP became a misguided, meandering mess. Some cool studio tricks and tech to note here and there, but you do actually need some melodies and sense of songwriting to make an album work.
It’s a narp from me. Too out there. Like jazz, the only people the musicians are entertaining is themselves.
I'm going to take a pass on this Pink Floyd album. I like the band, but let's just say, I'm glad they got better. This album just didn't do it for me.
Overrated 1.8
This is clearly what they were going for on that Os Mutantes album, but this one has a little more beatboxing. Giving it two stars because the first few songs aren’t that bad, but the rest of the album is just strange. I think if you played this to me while I was on drugs I would probably never forgive you for the rest of my life 3/10
Pink Floyd was more like Stink Floyd with this Mid Barrett guy amirite? A couple decent moments but overall the direction of the album just didn't hit with me. The songwriting is a lot like the other Syd Barrett work that I've heard which isn't my favorite. We should all be glad that David Gilmour joined and Roger Waters took over the songwriting for the later albums
The only thing that got this album a 2 was the 9 minute song was actually kind of poggers. Other than that I almost KMS'ed halfway thru. The Gnome song was troll but bad
Not every debut album of a great band needs to be on this list. 2/5
I have never listened to pink Floyd. This feels a level above the other prog rock we have listened to on here. Quite experimental and big compositions. Still not convinced on prog rock or that I'll listen too much after this.
Didn't do much for me. Think they went on to go greater things
As a "late" Pink Floyd fan (DSOTM onward) it was the first early album that I have listened to. Decided I much preferred the "later" stuff post Syd.
My love of Pink Floyd has always been for their 70's output. Happy to give another run at Piper, only to be reminded why it doesn't sit on my shelves. The album is ponderous and messy, almost playing like a spoof of the psychedelic rock genre that exploded that year. The sense of experimentation on Astronome, Interstellar, etc. is incoherent and draggy. Many of the songs sound like guys messing around and hoping that something cool happens while the tape rolls (not in and of itself a bad thing). Unlike a lot of other albums of this genre, I feel that Piper hasn't aqed well. It feels more like a oddity, a museum piece rather than something you'd reach for in repeated listenings.
Pre-David Gilmour led album that really makes you wonder if Pink Floyd would have really been as successful as it was if Syd Barrett hadn't succumbed to drug use and mental illness.
No thank you - has a little bit of edge beyond the experimental psychedelic madness, but mostly experimental psychedelic madness. Not much to grab onto unless you're in the throes of an acid-induced fever dream. 2.5
Really annoying to listen to. It sounds like Syd et al are thinking far more about themselves than the listener, in trying to be impressively quirky.
Pow R. Toc. H - екскюзми, уот дъ хел. Много е странна и психо и ме напряга ужасно. Meh
Cool to hear early Pink Floyd, but at times grating and boring.
Poopers at the Gates of Dawn.
Kind of like a psychedelic Beatles type of sound… very weird but not awful. 2 of 5
No wonder everyone was ingesting heroic amounts of narcotics back then.
Yeah. Just yeah. Obviously better things to come.
so, so, so much more "60's"y than I could have imagined. David Bowies first album and this one have more in common than I ever would have guessed. Their musical ability is there but WOW, the lyrics and their delivery are not the coolest. That beings said, it had plenty of good moments. One song sounded like a precursor to "Set the controls for the heart of the sun". Interesting but I think I'll avoid this one on any Pink Floyd re-listening.
Eh
This version of Pink Floyd is almost unrecognizable compared to the progressive rock masterpieces they would later release. But I've never been huge on psychedelia, and the entire record has that sound, although there is more actual song structures throughout here. There's some solid jams here and there, but this just really isn't my cup of tea.
They did some great music but this one doesn't really stand the test of time.
Yeah, I don't really see anything noteworthy about this. Production is godawful too.
Meget psykedelisk og eksperimenterende. Nok FOR meget til min smag. Fin debut, men deres lyd ændrer sig også meget senere hen. Kræver nok et lyt eller to mere.
It’s a no from me, Dog.
Could have played this entire album back to front and not been able to guess the band. I personally don't care for British Pop, 'wanna hold your hand' Beatles and shit. Didn't care for this.
This sounded more like the Monkeys than Pink Floyd to my ears. Maybe they hadn't found drugs yet?
Well they sure got better… clearly Syd was a great influence and inspiration but his affected voice grates and the dull themes (bikes, gnomes) drag. And whilst Pink Floyd began their sonic exploration, some of it seemed just to be switch the speaker balance left to right, back and forth! A curiosity as much as anything.
I don't love this. Some of the songs are okay, but some of them fill me with rage and make me want to throw things
The unfortunate thing about this album is that it just isn't as good as their later work. Sure, Syd Barrett is taking some new directions, but it's unrefined. Some judicious production could tone down some of the repetition, maybe sort of the jangling. Lucifer Sam is the standout track with its detuned Californian surf feel. Anything that twoddles on about goblins drinking wine should just fuck off and bury itself in soft peat for six months.
Not very good. It’s trying to be whimsical I guess. You can tell drugs we’re involved in it’s creation, but that just leads it to be annoying and lacking in clear structure. The vocals are nice but there’s no Great songs or actually any good songs. It’s all just annoying and not very pleasant to listen to.Lots of double tracked vocals with nonesense lyrics, and random sounds, lots of random Sounds tjat Are just irritating.I’m glad they improved after this and started doing cool Guitar solos. This does not deserve to be on Rolling Stones 500 best albums of all time list.
Not quite there....
At least we know it only goes up from here.
I’m convinced you need to have smoked weed at least once to enjoy psych rock.
C Astronomy Domine - 3 Lucifer Sam - 3 Matilda Mother - 3, used to be one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs Flaming - 2 Pow R. Toc H. - 3 Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk - 2 Interstellar Overdrive - 2 The Gnome - 3 Chapter 24 - 3 The Scarecrow - 2 Bike - 2 I used to like this a lot when I was younger. I'm not sure why. I understand the novelty of Syd Barrett's only Pink Floyd album, but they were clearly much better off without him. Sometimes, drug addiction can save lives.
Once again, I find that I'm just not that into Pink Floyd.
Generally speaking I like Pink Floyd. However, this album did nothing for me. I knew Astronomy Domine because Voi Vod did a great cover of it back in the early 90s. But other than that, nothing on this album stuck out for me.
Well, they had to start somewhere. So they started… there.
It's a good thing I discovered Wish You Were Here and The Wall before hearing this because it might have put me off ever giving this band a second chance. This is just too untethered and weird for me. There were moments where musical brilliance shone through the trippy clouds, but they were way too few and far between to make any of this coherent. I'm glad to have listened to it, as a historical record, but you can meet me on the dark side of the moon. It's more like a 2.5, but it ain't a 3, so 2 will have to do.
Meh 2/5
Oh good, some late 60s English rock. I was worried I hadn't heard enough yet. It's only album 999 after all. Pretty different to later PF - turns out Syd Barrett wrote the whole thing. It's pretty loaded with whimsical amusical nonsense, but also has some actually songs. Makes it more listenable than his solo album... but only just. 2/5.
I prefer their later stuff
not for me.
I'm not a Pink Floyd fan. I just don't get it. I've also never done drugs. (This may be relevant.) These songs have the most random lyrics, I just have to roll my eyes at most of it. Watching buttercups and riding you-nee-corns? It's definitely not the worst album on this list. I did like Lucifer Sam, which is the most straight forward rock song on the album.
Not good
Far from their best stuff. It's alright.
Didn’t enjoy this
Like first two songs, after that, falls off
They chose this over Dark Side of the Moon? This isn't bad, but it's british rock from before the 2000's so I'm instantly tired of the genere. I'll give it a 3 I guess, but I'm not enjoying it a whole lot. It's not agregously bad like other british music we have had to listen to though. The nice thing about this is that not all the songs have singing/lyrics. There is a song that is 9 minutes 40 seconds long, and it sucks too. Immediatly dropps this thing to a 2.
I think I need more LSD to find this album good Pity, I really like the later Pink Floyd (Dark side.., the Wall, etc) but this was just crap
Aivan liian taiteellista menoa meikäläisen makuun ja yleiseen fiilikseen ko. orkesterista. Otti koville kuunnella läpi.
Eipä tämänkään myötä mitään ihmeellistä ahaa-elämystä kyseisestä bändistä syntynyt. Jonninjoutavan oloista
Meh
Just another album that washed over me. Sorry
Wtf is this. Though recognised some intros
Flummigt 60-tal som inte åldrats så väl
I’m a fan of their later work, and indeed of the Syd Barrett singles (Emily and Arnold, which disappointingly aren’t on this album), but this record is for me of historical interest only.
Psych rock. Built the groundwork for the early years of Pink Floyd but many more psych rock albums I’d rather put on. Bonus points in retrospect for Syd Barrett
Wat een car crash deze plaat.
Spacey
Even if there's a hint of what came later, this is either second-rate Dr. Demonology fodder or third-rate garage
Experimental and psychedelic but you can see where they were heading. Not their best album by a long stretch but without it there wouldn't be the iconic albums to follow so 2* for the start !
I liked bits of it but songs like The Gnome were just silly.
Syd Barrett has entered the chat. Apparently he went somewhat insane after making this album. I'd say he was deteriorating WHILE making it. I'll give it another listen the next time I try shrooms, and perhaps that will make a difference.
The “noise” portions really grated on me.
Overall: i dont even wanna finish listening to this. I like some of Pink Floyd's other, more popular, songs. But this album is hard for me to listen to even though I know they are influential. It just doesn't sound good to me lmfao Astronomy Domine - 2.5/5 not a big fan tbh Lucifer Sam - 2.5/5 not a big fan either Matilda Mother - 3/5 better a bit Flaming - Pow R. Toc H. - Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk - Interstellar Overdrive - The Gnome - Chapter 24 - The Scarecrow - Bike -
I'm pretty sure you need to be stoned to enjoy this album. Not a fan of random and discordant noises.
Sounds pretty stupid, but it's not that bad. 3 2
Look I was tired, hungry and just wanted to go home. All those weird psychedelic little sounds just weren't hitting right at all. Not really my thing and none of the songs really stood out to me (in a good way)
I got nothing. But I got a lot.
Why is this on here
Some very good stuff in here, with Interstellar Overdrive a highlight. Unfortunately a lot of it is wank. And Bike is an atrocity. I love Floyd, but man, this was, on par, not good
Pink Floyd can be great but this i didn’t really like. I really can’t say why it just sounds a little dull
A bit too psychedelic for my tastes
Meh, not it for me
Can't believe how disappointed I was by this, it droned on, never picked up steam and I have zero reccolation of it
No. Actively didn't like. Other Pink Floyd grew on me so I listened through twice and stick by it. The first point I thought hey I really like this was when the album had ended and a different PF album had started playing. Maybe if you were tripping in the 60's this would have been great - I, unfortunately am not, 2
I understand that this was a groundbreaking album, but I just don’t like much of it.
Just when you think it's standard 60s British Invasion, it veers off into some weird experimental nonsense. There are glimpses of the Floyd to come, but not many. Sorry, Syd, not a fan.
It strikes me that if Pink Floyd was made up of Ben Doak, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gapko then this album would be the best in the world.
Syd Barrett psychedelic genius my hairy bum hoop, he's got nothing on Ben Doak. This probably would have just about scraped a 3 until I got to The Gnome but that drivel has knocked it down a point.
Aivan liian 60-luku LSD jne. Jostain syystä kuitenkin auttaa, että koko levy on samaa sekoilumassaa.
Some progressive moments but also a lot of hippy bollocks
Seltsam. Manche tracks kicken, andere nerven tierisch.
Demasiado álbum conceptural y un tanto psicodélico. Ninguna canción conocida. Muy experimental. Es un grupo que me gusta, pero este disco, poco
This sounds like Beach Boys or The Kinks, they were definitely still waiting for their sound to come along
I generally enjoy psych rock and the music was okay but I was honestly very underwhelmed by this album
I guess for a first album it was fine but this is way below the quality I expect from Pink Floyd. I have no desire to listen to this album again.
I’m not sure Pink Floyd would have become as famous as it did if it hadn’t come out at the height of hallucinogenic drugs
Not a big fan of 60s psych rock, and this album showcases why.
Love Pink Floyd, this was not their best work for me
Pink Floyd is in my Top 5 bands for sure — Animals, Dark Side of the Moon, and The Wall are all five stars — but I just can't with Sid Barrett. It's like if the Beatles made an album that was nothing but Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds. Sid Barrett going nuts was the best thing that ever happened to Pink Floyd.
39/100
I love Pink Floyd, but I don't love this. Syd Barrett gets a lot of love, but the band made much better music without him - this is too out there for me (although every album should have a song with as silly a title as Take Up Your Stethoscope and Walk). Interstellar Overdrive is a very cool instrumental that loses its way and drags, there's no song that obviously appeals, and then you have stuff like Bike which is just too weird. 2/5.
I do not understand why people like Pink Floyd so much.
No le pongo un uno por respeto a quiénes son
I like Pink Floyd but i have a hard time with avant garde psychadelica.
Respect the talent, hate the music!
A young Joe Classic. Very psychedelic and weird. Bless Syd B
😕
Drugs much? Wouldn't listen to again
MEH
Ugh, hippies. I’m no fan of 70s Pink Floyd but I didn’t make it to the end of this.
This album was alright, pretty standard British Invasion era music that really isn’t my thing
There is a lot of noise, yes it does sound like something to play while taking hallucinogens. But then if I were to take those, I would not want this music to guide my experience. It might turn into something scary. There is a lot of experimenting with sounds, kind of fun, but doesn't make me feel particularly good. I liked Matilda Mother and Gnome. Maybe needs another listen but I am not that excited by this right now.
Meh.
Understanding Pink Floyd's origin story made me like them a bit more. And then Bike ruined everything.
Listened before, not their best.
This one is not for me
Since it’s their first album I get that it was groundbreaking, but this is far from the best Pink Floyd
It's fun enough to hear early Floyd, in much-less-than-cohesive form and without much conjuring (for as familiar as Dark Side has become, the techniques are perfectly effective as far as I'm concerned; little of that here). It's even a genre I enjoy-by-default, but with a quarter of the runtime taken up by stinkers I cannot imagine returning to it entire.
Typical Pink Floyd.
too whimsical?
Bit weird but I get it
Detta sög.
Didn't move me. Listened through a few times and was mostly annoyed by the twee novelty songs. Bikes, gnomes, meh. Interstellar Overdrive has a nice riff, but it just doesn't go anywhere. Not a particularly auspicious debut even though I like the Wind In The Willows reference.
This is very telling of my age...but I did not know Pink Floyd started out as a psychedelic group before evolving into progressive rock. I enjoy the latter more.
Nope
Somewhat forgettable to me. Not much of interest and for sure weaker than their work in the '70s. I really like Pink Floyd, but missed this album in the past. First listen and save for some neat effects while wearing headphones (whispering and stereo effects), that's really all it offers. It can't even touch the genius of The Wall or Dark Side of the Moon.
i appreciate it when it sounds like artists enjoy creating and take joy in putting something together rather than enforcing an inspiring or controversial narrative on a melody in a clunky and unnatural way, but i dont feel like im in on this, in a 'you had to be there' improv evening way. i dont really see myself coming back to this. wasnt a terrible listen while i was drawing.
Pink Floyd was my favorite band in high school...well high school is over! I never heard this album before today and it bears little resemblance to the band that I loved from Meddle through Animals (yes I purposely left out The Wall), and I have little need or inclination to listen to it again. Oh well HS was overrated anyways 2 5 🌟
Boring
2. This was apparently before they got popular and dare I say good? Way too floating and experimental to me.
Couldn't make it through this one :(
honestly i like pink floyd but i just didn’t click with this album. it got annoying at times and just nothing felt good to listen to
Still always hard for me to believe that this is the "same" band that within a decade would release Dark Side..., Wish You Were Here, and Animals. I say "same" band realizing it kind of wasn't... Syd Barrett blahblahblah. I just don't know about this album. Some of Floyd's mid-70s period albums are among my favourites of all-time but so it's hard and maybe unfair to judge this as the beginning of some continuum. So to judge it on its own.... It's certainly weird. And at certain times interesting but is it actually good? I've listened to it 3x this weekend and I keep wavering on my own question. I guess as a poor summary I can't say if there is anything truly memorable or catchy here and that's not always necessarily a bad thing. This is definitely more of a feel album (or drug album which i've just eaten 2 enormous slices of homemade chocolate cake and the sugar coursing through me is definitely a kind of high...) that needs to be heard as a complete entity. It's maybe fun/weird/interesting in a mild way but the vocals are almost stereotypically 60s trippy/boring, most of the songs have interesting effects and often start to go somewhere but don't really have any cohesion to them. And honestly it's just not something I really would crave listening to. I tried. It's not bad, but give me "Animals" all day any day instead. 5/10 2 stars
Not a big fan of Syd Barrett Pink Floyd, it turns out.
I didn't really enjoy most of it. Weedy songs with little in terms of tunes that seem to lean on the worst psychedelic tropes. Terrible production doesn't help with tracks like Interstellar overdrive sadly lacking in energy and weight.
To experimental for me Rating: 4/10
Definitely prefer other albums of theirs.
Too poppy/early Beatles like. Not the true Pink Floyd that I know and love.
The folk-rock songs were okay, but I ended up skipping most of the improvisations. I feel like appreciating this album would require ingesting illegal substances.
Interstellar Overdrive is fun for a while, until the sound bloke on LSD goes off on one at the end. Then it can fuck off.
Feels very jam session but recorded. Fuck this
Hey at least it made me realize I've always been too hard on later Pink Floyd
On one hand, it's kind of novel to hear Pink Floyd's roots, but on the other, I didn't exactly come away from the album feeling like I needed to. Without their later, more distinctive sound, this resembles countless other 60s rock acts, some of which were already doled out by this generator. Picture S.F. Sorrow, right down to the questionable stereo mixing, though maybe with less overt Beatles influence, and you have a lot of what this has to offer. Key Tracks: Lucifer Sam
I'm not high enough for this. It's just not enjoyable.
don't listen to this if you like Pink Floyd
I was not really familiar with any of these Pink Floyd songs. It was not their best work.
rough around the edges but its their debut
OK
Rock demasiado psicodélico.
Very much of its time
Sounds like a bad trip.
Maybe for someone but not me
No amount of drugs is going to make this good
Meandering. This album reveals glimpses of a band that has better songs and albums. None of the tracks here were particularly inspired.
Huge PF fan but this album never did it for me. This form of Psychedelia - the poppy, cutsy type - never resonates with me.
After the first couple of songs I thought able went off the rails…
Surf Rock vibes Trying to be the Beatles...but later drug Beatles
Not their best.
I love Pink Floyd but this is some really mediocre psychedelic rock. You'd never think that they would go on to be one of the greatest bands of all time based on this album alone.
1967 was a phenomenal year for classic and influential albums, with the Beatles, Velvet Underground, Jimi Hendrix, Love etc… all releasing some of their best work. It’s a bit of a myth to say Pink Floyd were a major influence on psychedelic rock, loads of bands were doing it before them and doing it a lot better. It’s a debut album though that bears no similarity to their seminal 70’s output. This is a mainly forgettable album aside from Interstellar Overdrive. And the album cover is dreadful.
An album that would send you as mad as Syd himself. I can’t abide the vocals for most part and the silly 60s psychedelic pop lyrics, however musically it is also staggering brilliant in parts. A frustrating album
I kept wavering between 2 and 3 because a lot of the album I found kind of boring or just not to my taste, but then suddenly there'd be a really nice part that would last for about 10-15 seconds and I'd feel like it wasn't so bad. But I don't really want to listen to it again, and would probably change it if it happened to randomly come up, so I'm settling on 2. Quite a lot different than the more popular and famous Pink Floyd that came later!
I know they are great but for me it's a bit psychedelic
