This was so nice to listen to through headphones! A lot of the production on this one was so neat! I love how they experimented with panning between the right and left channels. Highlights: Lucifer Sam The Gnome (I love the transition from Interstellar Overdrive) The Scarecrow

gnome and scarecrow have been staples in my halloween music for years now. like the sound of it very much, a little bit too on the nose, like they were just fucking around and accidently created a masterpiece, but actually, they are masterminds yk? you can just hear their talent and what they are gonna be one day through these tracks. you notice the difference between them and other musicians immediately. insane.
Floyd is always great
Exploding with exploration. It's almost better when it's barely making sense. RIP Syd.
Only significant for what they would do later. This is too much of its time to have much appeal today, though. "Interstellar Overdrive" might be historically interesting but it's not a cut many, or any, PF fans think of first (or even tenth or 20th) when they consider what to play. Meddle, Animals and The Final Cut would have been far better choices on the merits.

Not my favorite Pink Floyd, but still not bad. Just doesn’t have the same memorable songs that my favorites of theirs do.
Some very good stuff in here, with Interstellar Overdrive a highlight. Unfortunately a lot of it is wank. And Bike is an atrocity. I love Floyd, but man, this was, on par, not good

Was surprised by this one, it's not the Pink Floyd I expected though admittedly my PF knowledge is nascent at best having only ever listened to a handful of their records.

Meh, not it for me
An incredibly fun collection of strange pop pieces, characterized by whimsical lyrics, lazy vocal delivery, a spacey chamber presence (filled up echoes and drawn-out instrumentation), surf rock riffs, and a wide variety of creative and standout instrumentation styles and studio techniques that evokes a ton of wild imagery, pulling from all sorts of genres and in general random sounds you'd encounter in life. They're all memorable, full of rich and colorful melodies. Some exciting but mostly mesmerizing. Every track contributes something unique for a full experience, and never a minute feels wasted. In a lot of ways sounds like Sgt Pepper, from the Beatlesesque harmonious vocals to the experimental stereo mixing, and even that weird tape outro just like A Day in the Life. Favorites: Astronomy Domine, Lucifer Sam, Flaming, Interstellar Overdrive, Gnome, Bike

The first point I thought hey I really like this was when the album had ended and a different PF album had started playing. Nice way to debute. I love that you can notice Syd here, its the other side of the band, everyone is showing off. The album has themes where you are being sucked into some pink floyd's planet for almost 10 minutes and im okey with it. It is psychedelic even on its album cover
Fun!
Bursting with ideas to the extent that a lot of them overflow and just kind of fall on the floor. Astronomy Domine is a great opener, and The Gnome is a lovely little ditty. The rest is just a bit hit and miss really, but full of promise
I have spent some time with other Pink Floyd albums, this one not so much. Syd Barrett was a tortured soul but I don't really see the brilliance. Listening with IEMs today and the weird stereo flip-flops were terrible in parts. Psychedelic - yes, enjoyable - I'm not convinced.
A bit too quirky at times but undeniably a pretty impactful album, and deservedly so.
I was expecting something different from what I received listening to this album. This is not the Pink Floyd I know and like to listen to sometimes. It's something different but recognizable at the end. It's strange but also familiar somehow. It's not easy, but the 50 minutes are not annoying. For sure, this is an important thing that will remain with me for some weeks.
I'm glad they got better after this
I had never heard this album before. I had to read up on it cuz I could tell it was early work. You can definitely tell they haven't found their voice yet. They sound like a lot of other groups from the time.
I understand that this was a groundbreaking album, but I just don’t like much of it.
Such a cool album that portends nicely to what was to come for Pink Floyd. Enjoyed listening to this piece of history a lot. Favorite track: Matilda Mother

Just when you think it's standard 60s British Invasion, it veers off into some weird experimental nonsense. There are glimpses of the Floyd to come, but not many. Sorry, Syd, not a fan.

This is honestly up there with "Wish You Were Here" and "Animals" for me. I absolutely love the stupid goblin music aesthetic (you know exactly what I'm talking about) and this album gives me so much joy. I like how the songs are blatantly and unashamedly about stupid shit. "Lucifer Sam" is about Syd's cat. People in the 60s thought it was a metaphor for cheating or something, but then Syd literally just said "No, it's about how cool my cat is". "The Gnome" is about a gnome and how cool it is to be a gnome. "Scarecrow" is about a scarecrow and how cool it is to be a scarecrow. "Bike" is about a bike and how cool it is to ride a bike and about a mice named Gerald. Don't look into the lyrics because every "analysis" of this album is wrong. This album is about Syd Barrett writing about things he finds cool. There's no deep message about the plights of humanity and the gnome is not a metaphor for Jesus. Just enjoy the man's lovely voice and the psychedelic effects. Also I can't not mention "Interstellar Overdrive". What a song. Listen to it with headphones - that finale is probably how it would feel to have an eargasm if ears could have orgasms. Roger Waters looks like a horse.
It strikes me that if Pink Floyd was made up of Ben Doak, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gapko then this album would be the best in the world.
Syd Barrett psychedelic genius my hairy bum hoop, he's got nothing on Ben Doak. This probably would have just about scraped a 3 until I got to The Gnome but that drivel has knocked it down a point.

The debut Pink Floyd album dominated by Syd Barrett before he lost his mind to LSD. A (the?) key album of British psychedelia. Whimsical and very much of its time. (Erm.. it sounds dated....) Songs about flowers and bicycles and some guitar freakouts. 3
Good thing they grew up
Pink Floyd is one of my favorite bands. Their earlier years though are definitely a bit more psychedelic, especially this album which I think was written mostly by Syd. Here they sound just like another young English band with some weirder more off-the-wall ideas. This album is definitely unique in that aspect, but novelty doesn't equal quality. I think this was overall an okay album, and a required stepping stone for the band to grow from
I'm not as big of a fan for this project compared to their later work, it just seems a lot more like an experimental stage and their sound isn't as refined yet

This is very bad timing for me. I’m currently going through the Pink Floyd discography and have already heard this, but not recently enough that I remember it very well, so I’m going to re-listen to it. I don’t have a lot to say about this. It’s very whimsical compared to their other albums. I liked it. Favorite song: “Bike” (also “Flaming”).
It’s not as great as what this band will become. Too psychedelic for my tastes and lacking some of the strong musicianship of later Floyd releases. Overall an entertaining if someone lifeless affair.

this is a really good pink floyd album. syd barrett adds to the oddity, eccentricity. there is challenging pop music here. experimental noise music. inventive structures and ideas throughout. i tend to think pink floyd is a highly overrated band, but this album still finds a way to nuzzle up and ease in. good job. i likey this batch of bops. yeehaw!

Pink Floyd. I don't like them. All my life everyone told me, "Ok Fine, but did you hear Pink Floyd with Syd Barret? It's probably more up your street". Suffice to say I hadn't until now. And this album is actually awesome. Can't believe I can say this about a Floyd album - but here they have some edge, they're fun and playful in the Kinks' vein, way better than when they started to take themselves too seriously and got 'Water-ed' down (ha ha ha). They still have the virtuosity, and the psychedelia - but here it feels genuine. Great album.
Not really my thing
The middle part is trippy, certainly unique, but it's not really for me, and then it all makes sense in the end to enjoy the nonsense medievalesque last tracks that are really beautiful

So here's the deal. I'm gonna do what the editors of this book failed to do, and trim some of the fat. What we got here in this book is 4 Pink Floyd albums. Not as over-done as some of the other artists, but still a bit much. Something has got to go, and this album is the one, as it's just bog standard psychedelia that probably 100 bands were making at the time. And listening to this while not on drugs, is like being completely sober and watching a bunch of strangers tripping out, you feel sad for them, and awkward for yourself. Now for the question of what I would replace this with. The late 60's and the psychedelic rock genre are already absurdly over-represented in this book, but I think a good replacement would be Gal Costa. Let's go with her self-titled sophomore album from 1969. You still get a heavy dose of psychedelia with a lot more mellowness, a lot less self-indulgence, a sweet Brazilian vibe, and infinitely better vocals. And you don't need drugs to enjoy it. As for this wank-fest, I give it one absentminded garden gnome warbling obnoxiously while being panned too aggressively from left speaker to right and back again. 🧙🏼

I generally enjoy psych rock and the music was okay but I was honestly very underwhelmed by this album
I guess for a first album it was fine but this is way below the quality I expect from Pink Floyd. I have no desire to listen to this album again.
I’m not sure Pink Floyd would have become as famous as it did if it hadn’t come out at the height of hallucinogenic drugs

LSD is a hell of a drug. Always super interesting to see where some of these legendary bands come from though
Astronomy domine- Kinda crazy this came out before man stepped on the moon. Honestly pretty obvious production for a grand space song, but I have to assume this is pioneering👍 Lucifer Sam- gives off anti cat vibes Matilda Mother-this feels like a precursor to Queen, a little more laid back but an interesting instrumental nonetheless. Doesn’t really pull together as a track Flaming- Pretty uninteresting LSD track Pow R Toc H- god this is as boring as you can get More boring (almost) instrumentals (Take Up thy stethoscope, interstellar overdrive) The gnome- This is the worst LSD song I’ve ever heard Chapter 24- Not quite sure how this is an example of genius, randomly taking a chapter from an important Eastern book but ok The scarecrow- This is fine, quiet catchy👍 Bike- outro is interesting, rest is twee nonsense I’m not sure I even like good Pink Floyd 1/5
Essential psychedelic album and an interesting mix of Syd Barrett's pop song structures and the more traditional Pink Floyd improvisational pieces.
Sounds like a 60s rock album with vocal harmonies, plenty of production effects, and mystical lyrics.
Not my favourite era, I find the Syd years just too whimsy. But I think half the reason I like PF so much is that there's this album plus the next, then there's the pre-Meddle period, then there's the classic band years, then there's essentially the RW solo albums (The Wall, TFC), then there's essentially the DG solo album years (AMLOR, TDB). What a band!

Is it bad to say that I prefer pompous Pink Floyd to this? (Actually, my favourite PF album is WYWH, so not quite. But I do prefer, say, The Division Bell to this.) Dunno, both from a historical and an artistic perspective, this seems neither avant garde enough to warrant a deep exploration, nor accomplished enough to endure 50 odd years. But this is me...

Hell of a debut album. When it first came out I wonder what it was like to hear this and wonder where they would go next. We would not be disappointed.
I prefer Pink Floyd without Syd Barrett. Would like to hear some live recordings from this era though, as I enjoy the instrumental numbers far more than Barrett's psychedelic nursery rhymes.
I haven't heard a lot of this album in a long time. Pretty classic psych-rock that somehow is pretty good, thankfully Syd has it still mostly together on this album. Interstellar Overdrive is probably my favorite track, it's pure jam-psych-sprawl. There are cutesy songs like The Gnome which are fun, which is the best of Syd's works... it all unfortunately goes from here for him. In terms of Pink Floyd, this is barely getting started and later when Waters comes onboard is when PF really become themselves.
Pink Floyd is in my Top 5 bands for sure — Animals, Dark Side of the Moon, and The Wall are all five stars — but I just can't with Sid Barrett. It's like if the Beatles made an album that was nothing but Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds. Sid Barrett going nuts was the best thing that ever happened to Pink Floyd.

Early Pink Floyd seems to have a similar sense of humor to early Kinks, which I like, but this isn't an album I'll listen to often. I like that there's a song about Barrett's cat (Lucifer Sam) and I'm saving that one.
Already one of my favourites. Best played with alcohol and incense. Would have loved to have been there........ This is 60's psychedelia at it's best and not to be confused with 70's Floyd which was incredible but not this. This is superb.
Holy crap is The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn bad. PF are hit and miss for me but this is terrible and nowhere near them at their best. Syd Barrett was a fucking rubbish musician off his tits on all sorts and we're meant to appreciate it? No. 1/5.
I love Pink Floyd, but I don't love this. Syd Barrett gets a lot of love, but the band made much better music without him - this is too out there for me (although every album should have a song with as silly a title as Take Up Your Stethoscope and Walk). Interstellar Overdrive is a very cool instrumental that loses its way and drags, there's no song that obviously appeals, and then you have stuff like Bike which is just too weird. 2/5.

A cool psychedelic album that's a little aimless at times, which is probably intentional. Definitely a different Pink Floyd than what would come with Syd Barrett's departure. I tend to like a somewhat more focused psychedelia but this is a solid debut album and I like Barrett's songwriting. Standout Tracks: Lucifer Sam, Interstellar Overdrive, Bike

Oh God. I fucking HATE this album. Very thankful Syd underwent his drug-induced mindfuck so they could get Gilmour on board and begin the REAL PF musical odyssey. Any joker who says they actually like this is a poseur assclown that you do NOT want in your life.
Not my favourite Pink Floyd album, but special in it's own way. I only really enjoy 3 or 4 of these songs but do like some of the experimentation on a couple of the others. A couple of them are borderline unlistenable though.
First thing’s first: this album is The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn by Pink Floyd. It doesn’t actually say that anywhere on the cover. I know they are renowned as geniuses, but I think I’ve only ever heard Another Brick In The Wall, and that is only through my grandma singing it on karaoke when I was a kid. Songs I already knew: none Favourites after listening: Lucifer Sam, The Gnome This is definitely an album that should be listened to as an album, meaning it would be a shame to pick and choose different songs or to listen to it on shuffle. Lucifer Sam was my favourite, although it did seem significantly different to the other songs - it wouldn’t be out of place in a Scooby Doo chase scene. It feels like I might not be on enough substances to enjoy this album at its fullest as it is quite trippy. I don’t usually mind that in music, but it did outstay its welcome for me in Interstellar Overdrive. Overall this is a good, but not great, album. Recommended to anybody who is totally high right now.

Mad Syd Barret. Roger Waters. What more do you need? Pink Floyd's first incarnation is arguably the best. Leaders of psychedelic rock and we all know how they went on write and produce other great things (likely also on here). Nothing quite like this though.

15th September 2022 Listened mainly on my lunch break walking around Westfield having gone in to the office. Jen in Spain so chilled and watched Thor. Not quite the sonic, expansive Floyd that is popular - more of a folk edge to some of these but with hints of their later sound. Still very layered and boundary pushing though.
the sound of psychedelic rock going through puberty. plenty of tongue-in-cheek ideas, long cacophonous interludes, and mainstream rock foundations, but it all feels kinda jumbled and primordial.

The production is rough around the edges at times. I get the feeling that the production techniques couldn't quite keep up with the scope of the album. this in combination with the eccentricities that a lot of early psych has makes this album a more difficult listen than the later pink floyd albums. However if you can look past the rough production and try to imagine how the rougher moments were intended you'll find a lot of brilliant writing. Definitely not an album for everyone but i really enjoy it for what it is.
TLDR: This is not the Pink Floyd album you were looking for. If you woke me up in the middle of the night to ask me who my favourite band is, the answer you'd get is Pink Floyd. However, the Pink Floyd I'd be referring to is the one with David Gilmour (and, preferably, with Roger Waters too); I was never able to attach myself to Syd Barrett's Floyd. Piper at the Gates of Dawn explains why: there's some good music there, yes (Interstellar Overdrive offers a fine example). But the whole thing is way too trippy, lacks cohesion, and frankly I don't understand what the band is trying to say. I don’t think they do, either. Piper is probably as fine a start as one could expect given the circumstances, but it's the landmark albums that came out during the seventies in its post Barrett era that gave Pink Floyd the power of its might.
Great album. Sporadic and bizarre.
This is a typical 70s atmospheric album that you would expect from Pink Floyd. You need to be in the mood to listen to it. I think me being in that mood will be rare. It's not bad, just not for me on a normal listening basis. Also, ending the album with Bike was an awful choice.

Well, what we can say is that Pink Floyd found it's sound eventually. This album isn't bad, but it is pretty uninteresting for a band that would put out so many iconic albums over the coming decades. It's also easy to see how the work being done here forms a bridge between the psychedelic movement of the 60s and the music that Pink Floyd would release in the 70s once Syd Barrett departed the band. It's a neat signpost in musical history, and the band was definitely experimenting with a lot here, but ultimately this album is not that interesting to listen to 3/5

Ugh, hippies. I’m no fan of 70s Pink Floyd but I didn’t make it to the end of this.
While this album isn't nearly as easily a 5.0 star album as The Dark Side Of The Moon, The Wall or Wish You Were Here would be, but it's still a solid 4.5 that I'll be rounding up. As most psychedelic rock albums, it does have its unpleasant moments. Interstellar Overdrive in particular was a bit challenging at times. But the combination of psychedelia and instrumental mastery is what pushes this one over the top for me.

Very British 60's rock and I love it. Of course its not anywhere near as tight as Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here (my personal favorite), but it brings a full experience of psychadelic sounds and lyrics. This won't be for everyone, but it's definitely for me.

There is a lot of noise, yes it does sound like something to play while taking hallucinogens. But then if I were to take those, I would not want this music to guide my experience. It might turn into something scary. There is a lot of experimenting with sounds, kind of fun, but doesn't make me feel particularly good. I liked Matilda Mother and Gnome. Maybe needs another listen but I am not that excited by this right now.
Interstellar was cool till the balance effects went a bit too far.

Jaka, čvrsta četvorka i mislim da bi ovaj album s lakoćom stavio u top 5 njihovih. Psychedelic Rock classic i šteta šta taj album neću nikad doživit čuti uživo.

I wasn't totally convinced to start with but shit gets pretty psychedelic toward the back end of this thing.
Love me some Floyd, but I'm not the biggest fan of the really early stuff. Meddle is kind of the furthest back in their catalog that I've done most of my listening. This album was just ok for me. Nothing that turned me off, but it's not the record I would put on by choice; give me Animals any day, every day.

I delightfully strange album, though not even close to their peak.
Still not big on the Floyd, and a lot of this is too esoteric and whimsical for my taste. But there’s some really cool psychedelic stuff here that almost makes me a believer. The production in particular is delightfully dingy, and fits their vibe perfectly. C
As boring as every other Floyd album, even more so than the wall… shocking. If you need class A drugs to listen to music, is the music really that good? Not all psychedelic rock is bad but all Pink Floyd is pretty boring

Not my type of rock - very distracting and was giving me a headache
I've always avowed a dislike of Pink Floyd. I love old-school punk, and I've followed the punk orthodoxy that Pink Floyd were the apotheosis of the conceited, flatulent bores that populated prog rock. My attitude since my student days has mellowed slightly, but only slightly. Nowadays I'm not going to act outraged if someone puts Money on the jukebox (though I still think it's cack). But the punk orthodoxy on Pink Floyd carried a qualifier: the enmity towards Pink Floyd should be directed towards the Roger Waters era. It's easy to comprehend why. Roger Waters is clearly one of the most pompous, humourless figures in all of rock. If you said "Knock knock" to Roger Waters, he would glare at you silently for a full minute, his snarl becoming more and more severe as the seconds passed, and then scream in your face that your "Knock knock" statement made you directly responsible for the death of a Palestinian child. But the punks tended to excuse Syd Barrett from the opprobrium. Syd's whimsy and tragic breakdown granted him a pass, to the extent that the Damned asked Syd to produce their second album Music for Pleasure; he couldn't be contacted what with being a recluse, so the Damned asked Pink Floyd's drummer Nick Mason instead (even Pink Floyd's drummer was whiny and melodramatic. The drummer. Chew on that for a while.). The ill-starred album bombed critically and commercially. This was to be expected. Previously, I reviewed Syd Barrett's first solo album, The Madcap Laughs. I gave it one star. It degenerated into studio outtakes by side B, making the whole album seem an ugly exploitation of an unwell man. So logically, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn must represent the full-bloomed talents of Syd. But on listening, I'm obliged to conclude that it doesn't really work. This is not to say PATGOD is bad, per se. Some of the tracks have that pleasing, trippy, rocking playfulness of reputation. But large parts have that most fatal of curses: dullness. The experimentalism of the album just comes across as exercises in cleverness rather than inquisitiveness, of Pink Floyd filling out an IQ test with cribbed answers. More personally, the childlike insinuations to fairy tales and Edward Lear don't appeal to me. The worst trend of our age is the dislodging of serious literature by Harry Potter fans too blinkered to bother with intricate prose, and I am similarly wary over late-60s groups trying to evoke a mythical arcadia where we dance around the meadows as a goat-hoofed pixie plays his flute to summon the fairies and render us all perpetually 12. So, PATGOD manages to be both far too ponderous and far too slight. I can just about recognise why others genuflect towards this, but I still see no reason to revise my antipathy for Pink Floyd. Also, I really don't know what to deduce about the legacy of Syd Barrett. Would his other solo album finally give me my chips? Maybe one day soon I'll listen to it, but not today. As for PATGOD, 2 stars seems a molecule too harsh, but it's one of the most generous threes I've given so far.

Il y a quand même des trucs superbes comme Astronomy domine. Il y a aussi le jeu de basse de Roger Water qui est surprenament hip et technique à quelques endroits. On entrevoit ce qui allait devenir un des plus important band de l’histoire.
Ce n’est pas le plus accessible des albums. C’est pas mal la définition de psychédélique. C’est très expérimental et il faut avoir envie de vivre cette aventure pour apprécier son écoute. Malgré ces particularités, il y a des perles comme Astronomy Domine, Interstellar Overdrive, Lucifer Sam, Matilda Mother et The Gnome. À écouter pour connaître les débuts de Pink Floyd, mais ce ne sera pas l’album le plus populaire.
If you were going to put out an album in 1967 you had to have a song about a gnome.
This album has a drastically different sound from anything Pink Floyd made after the 1960s and I’m assuming that that’s mostly due to the departure of syd barrett. This was mostly cool from the perspective of hearing what the band sounded like at the start before they found their footing. And that sound was a pretty standard psychedelic rock vibe

Experimental psychedelic rock debut album. Very late 60s. Probably only fully makes sense to a drugged up Boomer.

L'esprit de Barrett, c'est de l'or en barre quand on pense à toutes les musiques dites alternatives qui peuvent revendiquer une filiation avec cet album. Le Pink Floyd qui se développera sans lui est sans doute plus influent, mais avouons-le : malgré son départ prématuré du groupe, Barrett a pu dessiner des balises très claires pour la production ultérieure. Il est en quelque sorte le "5e Pink Floyd" (et le premier). Mieux, j'estime que le groupe, atteignant plus tard des sommets de reconnaissance et de popularité, n'aura exploré que quelques suggestions de son fondateur, avec des bifurcations évidemment. Mais n'est-ce pas une des qualités de ce groupe, la bifurcation, la rupture? Pink Floyd proposait cela dès le départ sous la houlette du "madcap". Chaque chanson est un petit essai, une proposition pour un courant musical. Suis-je assez élogieux? Du génie, tabarnak!
This one is not for me
Since it’s their first album I get that it was groundbreaking, but this is far from the best Pink Floyd
It's fun enough to hear early Floyd, in much-less-than-cohesive form and without much conjuring (for as familiar as Dark Side has become, the techniques are perfectly effective as far as I'm concerned; little of that here). It's even a genre I enjoy-by-default, but with a quarter of the runtime taken up by stinkers I cannot imagine returning to it entire.
For Pink Floyd, not great, compared to every other band, good.

Syd's influences are obviously most heavy here, but it is crazy to see how deep they affect all the future albums. Incredible psychedelic journey.

Early Pink Floyd is not like later Pink Floyd. Barret brought some whimsical songs to the table, some of them good some of them not so.

Odd album, very psychedelic. This wasn't really my vibe but there were some songs that were more listenable and I enjoyed those. Overall probably a good album for someone else.
Not exactly the most listenable overall. I can appreciate it for the influence it had on other bands and on psychedelic rock as a whole, and there are certainly some nice songs, but probably wouldn't revisit.

I'm much more into 60s psychedelia these days but still struggle a little with Syd-era Floyd. That said, the teetering between lysergic enlightenment and mental illness is drawing me in today.
Pink Floyd is one of my to 5 all-time favorite bands, but I have probably only listened to this early ablum one time before reviewing The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn for this list. Perhaps I have only listened to this album only once before because it is the early Syd Barrett authored sound. I enjoy many tracks from Barret ("See Emily Play", "Arnold Layne"), including tracks from this album ("Bike", "Astronomy Domine"), but the band's output was uneven during his time. "Pow R. Toc H." (with a string of somewhat grating introductory sounds that come back later in the track) is the low point for me on this album. This album is prime psychodelic rock, and further away from the more progressive leaning albums central to Pink Floyd's career. If my three star rating means that it's a single listen and I'm done, then I will have to admit that this album has earned rounding up to four stars. I may be back to hear the whole thing again.
Had never listened to early Pink Floyd, and this was a surprise. Psych rock versus prog rock? And did anybody get a “The Who” vibe from this album? Perhaps I should have been stoned before listening. I really enjoyed flashes of it, but other times it started to drag a bit like during Interstellar Overdrive. Between a 3 and a 4. Probably a 3 because the tail end of the album isn’t as good as the start.
Should've known from the album cover art that this would be an extremely pyschadelic sounding and feeling album. Some good song on here but overall maybe a bit too weird for my liking. The addlibs are a little bit terrifying at times but they definitly feed into the overall vision of the album. Continuous rhythms cut up with odd noises all about the place and unusual guitar motifs make it an unusual listening experience. I'm sure it'd be great to listen to in the right setting but I feel as though today, currently in the library, it isnt the one. Some elements border on lines of similarity with a previous Miles Davis album with similar chaos and unordered noise, which somehow manages to work in creating a sort of auora about it. Very mysterious frequencies. Wrote this about halfway through; Second half is distinctly less musically weird but lyrically very strange still. In a very enjoyable way, almost beatles esque. Not what I expected from Pink Floyd.

Okay. Let’s drop some acid and make (or listen to) a record. Never heard this before. I was obviously expecting a lot more guitars. Fun, but Floyd is now Dark Side of the Moon or the Wall for me, so less of this and more of that preferred.
Didn't move me. Listened through a few times and was mostly annoyed by the twee novelty songs. Bikes, gnomes, meh. Interstellar Overdrive has a nice riff, but it just doesn't go anywhere. Not a particularly auspicious debut even though I like the Wind In The Willows reference.

My stepfather is a huge Floyd fan, so I've been exposed to a lot of their music, but not their early stuff as much. No family road trip was ever complete without listening to The Wall from start to finish (usually twice). This feels different to their later works, as their sound clearly got more distinctive and 'prog rock' as they went on. I'm definitely more fond of their later sound. There's more whimsy and focus on the lyrics in this album I feel. This is still obviously a good dose of psychedelia though. It's probably a very good accompanying album to fellow 1967 release 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. As they were recorded at the same time at the same studio, that's hardly surprising. My top pick from the album is the opening track 'Astronomy Domine' but I also liked 'Lucifer Sam'. This is more of a 3.5 but I didn't enjoy it enough to be a 4. As an aside - what a cool album title! Thanks Kenneth Grahame.

This is very telling of my age...but I did not know Pink Floyd started out as a psychedelic group before evolving into progressive rock. I enjoy the latter more.
Oh man. What a fun and whimsical little piece of psychedelia. It's odd and silly but I really enjoyed it. And obviously the debut of an incredible band.
Youthful upbeat sound compared to later Waters/Gilmore PF. Reminiscent more of zombies, animals, cream etc just a bit more psychedelic. Already very experimental with voice and recording effects as well as extended clatter (bike) à la money or time intros. Not the cleanest editing with some (intentionally?) choppy cuts here and there. Interstellar overdrive is right. Take up my stethoscope and walk, scarecrow, bike
As someone who has a lot of experience listening to Pink Floyd, I've never heard this album or any of it's songs so this is going to be really interesting. This is waaaay different than what I'm used to from this band, their youth and inexperience really comes through but it does give a hint of the levels of experimentation and their ability to pave the way into new territory with music comes from. It definitely is something that I think would be very unappealing to a lot of people, and would be a hard listen. Regardless, to me this was pretty fun and a really interesting peek into the birth of what would become a massively influential band. I also learned that the "Real Eyes, Realize, Real Lies" super deep saying to teenagers came from this apparently?

Somewhat forgettable to me. Not much of interest and for sure weaker than their work in the '70s. I really like Pink Floyd, but missed this album in the past. First listen and save for some neat effects while wearing headphones (whispering and stereo effects), that's really all it offers. It can't even touch the genius of The Wall or Dark Side of the Moon.
As good as Pink Floyd became I’m not sure how this album got on this list. I liked some bits of some songs but not one song was worth listening to again.
i appreciate it when it sounds like artists enjoy creating and take joy in putting something together rather than enforcing an inspiring or controversial narrative on a melody in a clunky and unnatural way, but i dont feel like im in on this, in a 'you had to be there' improv evening way. i dont really see myself coming back to this. wasnt a terrible listen while i was drawing.
thought i was a cool teenager for listening to a pink floyd album that wasn't the dark side of the moon or the wall. piper was very important to my high school psych phase and i was infatuated with syd barrett and anything he touched. i had fun revisiting this. great groove. doesn't take itself too serious.

Pink Floyd was my favorite band in high school...well high school is over! I never heard this album before today and it bears little resemblance to the band that I loved from Meddle through Animals (yes I purposely left out The Wall), and I have little need or inclination to listen to it again. I like psychedelia. I think weird and unorthodox music like psych/prog rock is vastly more interesting than anything that's been on the pop charts for ages. I like nontraditional song structures, with strange chord progressions and time signatures. I really enjoy the 1967-1975ish era when rock musicians were really pushing the boundaries of music, creating cohesive mind-expanding albums instead of cheap radio pop singles. Modern popular music bores me to DEATH; it loses my interest quickly. Maybe that's an ADHD thing, who knows. Even though this album is aged it still comes off as much more inventive than anything I knew growing up in the 21st century. I find it fascinating that music like this ever sold, back in the day. It's the opposite of radio-friendly. I will say that this album is not a great intro to Pink Floyd, imo. Their 70s output is definitely the reason they are beloved far and wide. So I hope this album isn't the FIRST Pink Floyd album anyone hears, otherwise they may get frightened by its quirkiness and immediately dismiss the whole band.

honestly i like pink floyd but i just didn’t click with this album. it got annoying at times and just nothing felt good to listen to
Still always hard for me to believe that this is the "same" band that within a decade would release Dark Side..., Wish You Were Here, and Animals. I say "same" band realizing it kind of wasn't... Syd Barrett blahblahblah. I just don't know about this album. Some of Floyd's mid-70s period albums are among my favourites of all-time but so it's hard and maybe unfair to judge this as the beginning of some continuum. So to judge it on its own.... It's certainly weird. And at certain times interesting but is it actually good? I've listened to it 3x this weekend and I keep wavering on my own question. I guess as a poor summary I can't say if there is anything truly memorable or catchy here and that's not always necessarily a bad thing. This is definitely more of a feel album (or drug album which i've just eaten 2 enormous slices of homemade chocolate cake and the sugar coursing through me is definitely a kind of high...) that needs to be heard as a complete entity. It's maybe fun/weird/interesting in a mild way but the vocals are almost stereotypically 60s trippy/boring, most of the songs have interesting effects and often start to go somewhere but don't really have any cohesion to them. And honestly it's just not something I really would crave listening to. I tried. It's not bad, but give me "Animals" all day any day instead. 5/10 2 stars
Not a big fan of Syd Barrett Pink Floyd, it turns out.
3.7 + Not their most accomplished record but certainly distinguished for the time in its sound experimentation and studio mastery. For 1967, they were already well ahead of the pack in exploring psychedelia. “Interestellar Overdrive” drags the middle of the record for me. The second half has some whacky, Syd Barret-y songs with his signature slapdash vocals.

Whimsical, strange, trippy this is British psychedelia at its very best. Sadly Syd with never hit the same highs on his two solo albums.

Can't go wrong with Pink Floyd, physico rock will change your mind!
Pink Floyd is one of my most favorite bands of all time. That being said, I am less of a fan of the music they recorded in the Syd Barrett years. On the positive side, I can hear even in this debut album the vision and talents of the band, which became more and more apparent as they progressed away from the heavy psychedelic sound with which they began their performing and recording careers. Although most music in the psychedelic genre generally annoys me, Pink Floyd's take on it contains more art, melody, fun, and originality. Compared with most psychedelic rock, this album is a lot better. This album suffers a little through my listening ears for two main reasons: (1) my overall dislike of the psychedelic sound [so much of it sounds like people tripping playing music they think sounds cool while tripping but doesn't translate to sober ears, or worse, sober people making music they think tripping people would like] and (2) Pink Floyd's later music is just so darn amazing to me that these earlier efforts don't measure up by comparison (this is 100% forgivable, of course). The Syd Barrett story is fascinating, beautiful, and of course as we all know, ultimately heartbreaking and tragic. I cannot hear one of my most beloved Pink Floyd songs, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," from Wish You Were Here, and not get a little choked up from the sheer beauty of the music, the poetic artistry of the lyrics, and the story behind the song. Back to this album, which has more good tracks on it than I've given it credit for -- picking up a lot more as I re-listen to it all the way through. For example, Pow R. Toc. H has some great keyboard work (descends a bit too much into trippy sound effects later on, though). Interstellar Overdrive is pretty wild. I can imagine how weird and disorientating it all would be live.
I didn't really enjoy most of it. Weedy songs with little in terms of tunes that seem to lean on the worst psychedelic tropes. Terrible production doesn't help with tracks like Interstellar overdrive sadly lacking in energy and weight.

It's a British psychedelic rock album. I like Bike and Interstellar Overdrive a lot and most of the other songs are decent. 8/10

The folk-rock songs were okay, but I ended up skipping most of the improvisations. I feel like appreciating this album would require ingesting illegal substances.

Fun poppy psych music but only barely hints at the potential of what was to come. As far as PF releases go this one isn't nearly as essential in my opinion.

One of the best Psychadelic albums I've ever listened to. Sure, later Pink Floyd releases would sound barely anything like this, but that's what makes this so good. What we have here is the perfect blend of whimsical nonsense and tripped out experimentation from the genius mind of Syd Barret. This is an album that only the Syd led era of Pink Floyd could produce, and for what it is I adore it dearly. Favorites: Astronomy Domine, Lucifer Sam, Interstellar Overdrive, Bike

Psychedelic classic
On one hand, it's kind of novel to hear Pink Floyd's roots, but on the other, I didn't exactly come away from the album feeling like I needed to. Without their later, more distinctive sound, this resembles countless other 60s rock acts, some of which were already doled out by this generator. Picture S.F. Sorrow, right down to the questionable stereo mixing, though maybe with less overt Beatles influence, and you have a lot of what this has to offer. Key Tracks: Lucifer Sam

Visto che ci sono altri due o tre album dei Pink Floyd nella lista non posso sbilanciarmi tanto. Ammettendo di non essere il loro fan numero, riconosco che in generale alcuni loro lavori mi sono piaciuti molto mentre altri per niente. Io qui non li riconosco proprio, sembrano i Beatles (per il sound British) che fanno rock-surf psichedelico. Forse perché essendo molto giovani, ancora non avevo trovato la propria identità. La prima traccia ha rubato la mia attenzione, ma è durato poco, a un certo punto sono diventati noiosi. Sì sono ripresi un po' verso la fine, dopo la traccia da 9 minuti, ma non ho cambiato molto idea. Delusione. 2
Altro gruppo nella top dell'aspettamento al varco. Dire che sto disco suona pretenzioso è dire poco. I tentativi di fare i paxerelli con The Gnome o Chapter 24 non m'hanno convinto e hanno fatto effetto jeans strappati da 200 euro. Si sente che si sentono parecchio fighi su sto album. I Genesis onestamente mi sono sembrati su un altro livello anche se Selling England By The Pound è tipo 5 anni dopo. Mi rendo conto che gli vorrei dare 3 solo perché me pare brutto, però certe cose le ho trovate abbastanza cringe pure, quindi vado di 2.

Vous qui lisez régulièrement la presse savez que j'ai écouté cet album en début de semaine dans le bus 5011. Je vais vous résumer cet épisode le plus succinctement possible. Il est 14h02 lorsque je monte dans le véhicule précité. J'attrape ma carte d'abonnement et la tends au chauffeur qui m'interpelle alors : "robcrémaillère ?!" Il m'avait reconnu. J'enfile alors ma capuche et mes écouteurs, lance l'album des Pink Floyd, et me dirige vers le fond lorsque j'entends le volume de la radio augmenter brutalement. Je me retourne alors et aperçois dans le rétroviseur central le regard du chauffeur me fixant de ses yeux guimauve. Celui-ci se saisit de ce même rétroviseur et l'abaisse lentement jusqu'à ce qu'y soit reflétée sa bouche. "Qu'est-ce que c'est que cette histoire ?" me dis-je. Je parviens soudain à lire sur ses lèvres le mot suivant : "Portishead". Il s'agissait d'un guet-apens. J'appuie alors de toutes mes forces sur le bouton d'ouverture de la porte arrière, enchaîne une série de coups de pied contre celle-ci mais rien n'y fait, elle est bloquée. Le volume sonore continue d'augmenter alors que les autres passagers restent totalement passifs. Sous mon oreille droite commence à couler un fin filet de sang. Après quelques minutes interminables, le bus s'arrête. La porte arrière ne s'ouvre toujours pas à l'inverse de celle avant, par laquelle un individu masqué monte soudain, un ordinateur à la main. Le soit disant groupe de petits genies vient nous proposer un album plagia des Beatles, à l'instar de tous les groupes moyens ayant exercé entre 65 et 80. Ma sentence est donc irrevocable, et je me vois leur attribuer la note mediocre de 3/5, synonyme je le rapelle d'album moyen, sympatoche, ne cassant pas trois pattes à un canard. Canard... C'est justement l'animal que les Pink Floyd ont décidé de ramener dans leur studio d'enregistrement afin de finaliser la dernière piste de leur album. Et c'est justement là que le bas blesse. Pour n'importe quel auditeur lambda, ramener un canard sur la dernière piste est anecdotique, mais pas pour une oreille si afutée que la mienne. Car ce canard, il ne vient pas de nulle part. En effet, ce canard a été tout simplement kidnappé par le leader des Pink Floyd, lord de l'un de ses passages au Penguin Cafe. Un acte innomable, qui marquera d'ailleurs un sérieux coup au futur du Penguin Café, qui ne parviendra plus à ramener des clients sans son canard vedette. Le Penguin Café devra mettre la clé sous la porte par la suite, tandis que les Pink Floyd jouiront d'une carrière légendaire, grâce à l'apport de ce bon vieux canard.

3.5 | Hace bastante tiempo que no escuchaba este disco completo. En realidad es un disco difícil de comparar cuando se toma en cuenta todo lo que vino después. Como tal diría que es un debut bueno, el disco en sí me agrada pero tiene particularidades muy extrañas, algunas buenas otras algo extrañas. Me agrada mucho que es de esos discos que son de verdad rock psicodélico, hay demasiados ejemplos de música que le quieren decir psicodélica y lo único que hacen es poner por ahí una cítara y creen que ya con eso. Aquí se siente en varios puntos esa voluntad de romper barreras y elaborar realmente el género, se siente por un lado en partes influencias hasta casi medio de cosas que venían haciendo los Beatles pero aquí sin límite alguno de hacer música que sea comercial y llevada al extremo. Es psicodelia que de verdad quiere hacer sentir a alguien en un viaje de LSD aunque no haya tomado nada, y lo puede lograr. Astronomy Domine, Lucifer Sam, Por R. Toc H., prácticamente todo ese primer lado es excelente, luego llegan esos puntos medio extraños... Interstellar Overdrive... siempre se me ha hecho como una canción grabada por gente que quería hacer rock experimental pero no tenían mucha idea de cómo o hacia donde llevarlo, tiene un inicio agradable el final es bueno y la mitad se pierde totalmente; termina siendo un gran ejemplo de cómo hasta para hacer "ruido" se necesita saber hacerlo, luego vienen esas canciones de Barrett con letras ridículas mucho más digeribles que lo que se venía en la primer mitad y con un sonido que clarito te deja saber que esto es rock sesentero, en realidad mucho más simples y menos interesantes aunque funcionan como curiosidad. Creo que es un disco que en promedio me ha agradado siempre, definitivamente es un disco que cualquier fan de la banda tiene que escuchar pero no siento que sea el grado de que toda persona lo debiera conocer, quiza un par de canciones. Por cierto falta mencionar See Emily Play que aunque no es parte oficial del track list original es vital creo para conocer los inicios de la banda y es no a mi parecer el mejor ejemplo de estas canciones psicodélicas de Syd Barrett que a veces funcionaban y a veces no, en esta ocasión es excelente y vale la pena buscar las versiones del disco que la añaden a la lista. En general un disco que me agrada bastante pero no veo necesidad de tener en lista. Ahora con su permiso voy a tener una aventura con Grimble Grumble.
