Reviews (page 8 of 8)

A largely unremarkable album except for the fact that this band would go on to record much better and impactful music. The missing ingredient in this debut was the rise of Waters and Gilmour as forces in the band and their unique perspectives.

Very experimental, almost a bit Beatles-esque. Really not my bag though. 2/5

I like Pink Floyd, but I've only listened to the later stuff. I didn't like this.

Very erratic. Definitely Pink Floyd but there’s clearly a reason DaRk side, wall, and wish you were here are held so highly.

Not really me - too psychedelic but glad I listened. Some clever lyrics (real eyes realise real lies) but didn't like the sinister undertones.

Such an odd sound - at times different and intriguing and at times discordant and a little tough to listen to. Cool to listen to early Pink Floyd, but this doesn't pull me in like their other albums do Liked: Lucifer Sam

Saved Prior: None Saved Off Rip: Lucifer Sam, Matilda Mother Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: I don't really get what the big deal about this is. I'm sure they get better as they go along but man, did not especially like these songs.

I enjoy some of the early psychedelic rock like this, but there was too much scattered noise and favoring of one ear over the other (don’t know the technical term for that) for me to really enjoy it

Never even heard of this album. Way more psychedelic than I was expecting given my knowledge of Pink Floyd doesn’t go much beyond Dark Side of the Moon. I imagine it was pretty mind bending at the time but a lot of it just feels a bit silly now. Pleased it wasn’t the prog rock I’d expected but probably won’t be listening to it again (unless I ever get a desire to hear a song about gnomes).

pink floyd is weird. this album was weird. no standouts, probably not going to listen again.

This started reasonably well, was ok in the middle and awful by the end. The four tracks from 'The Gnome' onwards have to be a joke, surely?!

The 60's were a crazy time, man

I am now disowned by the Gruenberg clan.

Made me feel like taking a kip. Fondly sees their inception, but glad they improved from here

Ummmmmm

It's fine, I'm just not a huge Pink Floyd fan.

I didn’t take enough acid to listen to this. Long boring and meandering.

maybe for the best

Too psychedelic for me.

Britisk psykedelisk rock, melodisk

Very all-over-the-place. Not really a showing of what they would become. I've listened to it prior, and didn't remember much, and for probably good reason. Very acid-folk, loose, weird. Favorite track: "Take Up They Stethoscope and Walk"

Fell apart at the bottom half. 2,5/5

Unpopular opinion but other than a few songs, I do not enjoy pink Floyd. This was a lot of noise, some ok but mostly just nof enjoyable to listen to.

I never thought I would ever give them a 1 star.

Three thoughts. 1. This is weird, even by today's standards. 2. There's a reason nobody cites this as one of the greatest albums of all times, let alone of all Pink Floyd albums. 3. "I'm playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order!"

Folky, hippy shit. Nah

This is some messed up psychodelic drivel. Living proof that drugs are bad.

Absolutely shoite and annoying. Fuck off back to your drugs

una pijita, me cuesta creer que alguien lo disfrute

Aggressively not my thing. I almost had to turn this off.

I think Pink Floyd can regard themselves as very fortunate that their record company didn't drop them after this first effort, or we might never have heard of them. Even by the standards of other "psychedelic" albums of the period this is absolute shite.

Pink Floyd's music is complete arse. There I said it 1 ⭐️

No surprise to learn that Pink Floyd were even churning out pretentious guff at the start of their career. I disliked this album. I dislike the band.

Most I've enjoyed a PF album. Still not for me though.

Absolute dross, don't care if its Pink Floyd. Perfect example of an album that does not need to be on the list. They've got some exceptional albums and this is a stinker.

WTF even is this album? At least they got better over time.

Ok it can't be just me that thinks some of this is just nonsense.

ts pmo bruh

Yeah if this were any other band I'm not sure it would be on this list, alongside a lot of the rest of the borderline offensive psych-adjacent late 60s British pop. Why am I listening to Pink Floyd sing about a gnome named Grimble Gromble? I do like Pink Floyd a LOT - I think that's why I'm being so harsh. One star.

Dark Side is one of my all time favorite albums, but man, this one is nearly unlistenable drugged out rambling. It's a miracle someone kept paying them to write more.

what the fuck pink floyd

You can't make me like Pink Floyd. Annoying stoners have been trying for years.

We can split Pink Floyd into two camps. Syd and Post-Syd. Give me Post-Syd every time. It's just another boring psychedelic album, but at least it's British and so has a little bit more humour involved. However, I'm still bored out of my mind by having to sit through what feels like the 100th 60's psychedelic rock album. They must have had exceptional drugs to put up with shite like this. I'll have what Dimery's having. Best Tracks: Astronomy Domine; Chapter 24; Bike

I’d rather listen to anything else

If Pink Floyd has no haters then I’m dead

Holy shit this music sucks

Do you need drugs to enjoy this? I don't think I've had enough drugs to enjoy this. Cover notes: what in the Olan Mills fever dream happened here?

Barely listenable

It's an abortion.

1. aztronomy - 1.5 2. lucifer -1 3. matilda - 1 4. flaming -0 5. pouu - 0 6. uualk - 0 7. interztellar - 1 8. gnome -1 9. chapter - 0 10. crouu - 0 11. bike - 1

If I was at the UFO Club in 1967 I might have enjoyed this. Also if I'd taken enough drugs. Listening now, with sound and sober mind, this album achieved the remarkable feat of being simultaneously pretentious, portentously serious, and cringe-makingly whimsical. By the time I reached the last track, Bike, I was actually angry at how stupid it was.

i understand now why on every other album they stfu for 90% of the song

Pretty sure this is not meant to be a sober listen and maybe that’s just the issue but this just wasn’t enjoyable like at all for me. Maybe I’m being a hater but this might be the first 1 star rating from me.

What did I just listen to???

A fledgling band playing and exploring sound. Not one I enjoyed. Maybe you had to be there

Getting really bored of the classic rock. Couldn't get through.

Really not for me, there is so much better Pink Floyd out there.

I was tempted to grade this on a curve since it's Pink Floyd, but if this was an album from a random band I'd never heard of before I may have even given up halfway through. I give 2s to albums that I'm never going to listen to again, but I didn't actively wish were over already. Unfortunately this is one that I was just counting down the minutes for. Maybe if I was on acid it'd resonate, but I wasn't.

Terrible. This, kids, is a lesson. Don't take drugs and read Tolkin and record t the same time. Music was Meh, Lyrics were primary school level.

Boring

This is NOT pink floyd bro what the fuck. Actually an insane album, like I know people love Syd Barrett but genuinely there's not even the glimmer of potential here. There were small moments I liked but goddamn this really wasn't it.

Recently listened to the entire Pink Floyd discography, a new album each day, I already know this album is terrible and they only got good in the early-mid 70s (and by good I mean amazing). The 60s are awful in general though and so is this.

That was so much worse than I thought it would be - I’m glad they moved away from this sound

My relationship with Pink Floyd's music seems to get more interesting by the day. Back in the day when "Another Brick in the Wall" hit the charts, I found it to be a very weird and rather scary song, probably because of the video with the marching hammers. Today, the song is a favourite of mine, as is the entire album on which it belongs, and I have come to really like much of Floyd's music, after eschewing it for many years... But, I had never listened to their debut album until today. My verdict on this one? Truly awful, and while I imagine most of their albums will be in the four and five-star range in my ratings, this one is getting just one lonely star. I honestly think that Syd Barrett's departure is the best thing that could have happened to Pink Floyd.

This is horrendously twee. The worst offender is the Gnome song, but it's far from alone. Interstellar Overdrive had brief moments that reminded me of bands I like a lot more, like Can, but lost me with the drastic left/right audio panning.

Why yes, this does sound like it was conceived by three architecture and one art student in the late sixties, how did you know?

Didn’t like

I am a big fan of Pink Floyd, but very specifically the 1973 to 1979 period of time (I guess I must prefer the Roger Waters led period-ugh). I have never been able to get into the albums from before then and after then. At all. I've heard songs here and there, and just don't really like them. As far as I can recall, I've never listened to this entire album before. I imagine I must've at some point, in the period of time when we'd hang out in someone's basement and just listen to albums non-stop (with the help of some substances as well). Listening today, I'm pretty sure this one would've sent me into a paranoid spiral, and it almost did today stone cold sober. This was not a good record, IMO. Way too pyschedelic for my tastes. I like weirdness, but I also like it to sound fun and have a point. I just didn't get this at all. I was prepared to give it a 2, just because I found my foot tapping at times, but then came the Interstellar Overdrive/The Gnome combination and I was done. From that point forward I was just irritated with what I was hearing.

Wow! If I did not know what I was listening to, I would not have believed this was Pink Floyd. I am no fan of Pink Floyd, but this was awful. I am glad they eventually found a different path.

Experimental and innovative for the time didn’t hold up imo

When I thought pink floyd couldnt be worse...

Every so often I decide to try to listen to Pink Floyd and realise that I don't understand it. Maybe I should try some of their later stuff (once I am feeling brave)

Not a Pink Floyd fan, and this album didn't change my mind. In fact, I think I liked it less than the usual popular albums. That said, kudos for not making every song 10 minutes long on this one.

I’m guessing this album is here because of the experimental recording techniques used to produce it. If I was being harsh I’d say there’s really no other conceivable reason. This album bears somewhat little resemblance to the post-Barret Pink Floyd led by Roger Waters and David Gilmour. The album ranges from full of experimental psychedelic rambling songs to Donovan-esque British folk inspired songs.

Love PF but not this album. 1/5

It’s that horrible sixties sound again.

Unremarkable circle jerking.

Being Pink Floyd can't save you from a bad score. This was bland at its best and unlistenable at its worst. "Astronomy Domine" starts with annoying beeps; the obnoxious gibberish at the start of "Pow R. Toc H."; the fading in and out of the L/R audio at the end of "Interstellar Overdrive"; the buzzing/feedback in "Chapter 24"; and they finish the album off with a minute and a half of bullshit horns and bells in "Bike". There's a reason I had not heard of this album, and there was definitely an addition by subtraction situation with Syd Barrett leaving. This gets my first 1/5. It's garbage.

Shite.

I'm really glad they were given the chance to change their sound.

this album is making it so hard to defend to my girlfriend that this group actually has bangers once you get past this gingerbread man ahh album...

this sounds like the beatles (derogatory).

Weird experimental sounds. Not a fan. Thank god it was short-ish.

That's not my taste in music - I can't do anything with the music

Infantile hippy early Prog Rock.

Hated every second of it. Dont care how original it is or that it’s 60 yrs old. I’ve heard so much better and worse music with this sound prior to listening to this that it really fails to impress. If you told me it was written in the 90s for a drug flashback scene in a shitty movie I would totally believe you.

That was hot garbage

What are we doing here? Sincerely.

This psychedelic bullshit sucks. Not to be a hater, but I hated this. I am quite glad that Pink Floyd evolved in a different direction from this album. By the time I got to Bike I was almost angry at this.

Didn’t think Pink Floyd could get worse. Unfortunately I was wrong.

If I could have given this no stars I would have. What an absolute joke. Probably the biggest load of rubbish I have ever listened to.

Pure torture.

Ugh, no thank you

Did not like this at all. I'm surprised because Pink Floyd is pretty popular.

Really? With all the great Pink Floyd albums you pick this one.

Was this album included because it was an early example of psychedelic rock or because rock critics can’t help but overrate Pink Floyd? Songs about evil cats, buttercups, and unicorns.

Yeesh I much prefer what Pink Floyd ended up becoming in their later work. If there's anything this list taught me it's that I strongly dislike pysch rock; mostly because it all sounds exactly the same and there were so many people doing it. I will say this was especially disappointing... good god. 2/10

Psychedelic und experimental Rock, which was a torturous listening experience. At times, I was checking my surroundings for Bad sounds because I found the experience to be that atrocious.

point8.

I’m officially sick of this band, thanks “1001 Albums…” authors!

it's just not very good is it? In this project I've learned without a doubt that Pink Floyd got better after Syd was gone. Discordant, droning, and with some pretty bad vocals at times. Unfortunate for such a well loved band

I asked my dad how this became one of the biggest bands in the world and he said “we were smoking a lot of weed” the weed was like 90% dirt that doesn’t explain anything. This was dreadful. A bottom ten experience here in the 500s

This album occasionally had music on it

Turn down the suck! In all honesty, this makes their later records even more amazing. How did they get from here to Dark Side of the Moon? Kudos

This is much more straight 60s psychedelica than what Pink Floyd would become. I like it much less. Lucifer Sam sounds like the theme song for a British TV show of the era. This is like bad, corny Beatles psychedelic rock. Pow R. Toc H.'s chattering is annoying. This reminds me of something I can't place. The switching audio channels is giving me a headache, like when the front windows in a car are rolled up but the rear windows are rolled down. This is like if Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band sucked. Give me 70s Floyd any day over this. And to end....some found sound. Just like the Beatles, what a terrible rip off. I just realized some of this album sounds like Robert Wyatt....no thanks.

A load of stupid hippy junk

I'm so tired of the 60s, folks. I'm just so done.

Not for me

late 60s Floyd is not my personal favorite Floyd. Interstellar Overdrive is just 60's noodling and I am not into it.

I'll just say, not a fan of this one. I also was very confused at first, because my spotify apparently glitched out and it was playing everything in super slow motion and at a lower pitch, so at first I thought it was just a terrible album, but really it was normal, but I just don't really love it.

This album confirmed that I can't stand Syd Barrett's "music". While there were some ok tracks in the beginning, the second half was utterly horrible. A lot of tracks towards the end felt aimless and lacked any structure. As someone who enjoys Pink Floyd's well-known works, I am disappointed to rate it this low. I even listened to this album twice in case there was anything remotely positive. Unfortunately, there wasn't.

Honestly, I'm embarrassed for them.

Absolutely terrible. Just plain odd. I’m sure that anybody using the same drugs as the band might be on the same wavelength and appreciate it. I can’t help wondering if they hadn’t have gone on to record their better work later on, would anybody care enough about this to make the list? I’m sure it was groundbreaking at the time but that doesn’t stop it from being a steaming pile of 💩

Had no idea Pink Floyd made hippie noise rock. Not a fan. Like Sgt Peppers without the songs.

There comes a pont where I feel I just want to hear a song. And I love pink Floyd!

I absolutely hated this

grating most of the time, surprised its this bad

Didn't know pink Floyd sounded like this at one point, maybe they a small amount of praise for evolving their sound through the years. This particular album sounds like the Beatles if you took out all the actual good songs. Sort of semi-classical folk music with toxic levels of whimsy, all gnomes and mice and rhyming silly words cause we're all so spaced out and groovy. Chuck in a few minutes of random noises likely under the guise of being experimental and it's got to be a 1.

The sixties are odd to listen to. There’s some banging stuff, like Sam Cooke, Otis Reading, CCR, and Fairport Convention. And then there’s some absolute tripe like this. I appreciate that it’s historically significant. I quite enjoyed Astronomy Doctrine, which felt a bit like a Sea Power number. But the rest was meh at best and awful at worst - that’s really not whimsy for me. And, of course, we’re just discovering stereo recording so let’s play with it and produce something clever. Which sounds so dated. I toyed with a 2 for a bit, but I never want to hear this again.

Kind of interesting. That said, it is the typical babbling late '60s psycedelia, with self-indulgent prog rock sections. Some good bits of music though.

They actually get better

Oh fuck off Pink Floyd. Most overrated band of all time. Gave it a track and a half and then listened to something good. Trash!

I was looking forward to this when I saw it was Pink Floyd. Some tracks are so strange, but all of them are boring. It's as if they found whatever objects they could in the studio and started banging them together and whatever noise came out ended up on the record. Is it genius and I just don't get it? Am I taking it too seriously? Or is it just really crap? I actually gave it a second listen and I do genuinely think it's just a bad album. I can certainly hear a lot of early Beatles and Bowie in this, it's just a shame that those two artists do it so much better. Take 'The Gnome' for example. Bowie's 'The Laughing Gnome' is a fun, whimsical tune and he gets away with it because that was his whole shtick back then, it wasn't too serious. However I do think that Pink Floyd wanted this to be taken very seriously, like they thought they'd written a masterpiece and we should all sit up and listen. The lyrics are laughable. Take 'Bike': 'I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like / It's got a basket, a bell that rings and things to make it look good / I'd give it to you if I could but I borrowed it' Then it's all about red and black cloaks, a mouse named Gerald in a house and gingerbread men clans. And then the second half is quite literally 'just noise'. Creepy alarm clock is the only way I can describe it. Genius or crap? Whatever the answer is, I don't get it. Take some hallucinogenic drugs and you'll probably have a better time than I did listening to this. Let's just hope that when they pop up on this list, their other albums are better than this.

I was never a huge Floyd fan, yes there is some talent here, but this is not an album that I would purposely listen to.

Terrible

I did not enjoy this collection of randomly panned noises and nonsense songs

I eat wrong kind of mushrooms, can't understand this.

God I hate the British (and will be using this exact review several more times)

ho hum

Not an album for me. Wanky middle class pop music. The lyrics are odd, there is no real stroy telling at all. I do think I am biased and hate most things that Floyd have done. Favourite song: None Least favourite: Flaming Album artwork: Not a fan

Boring. Like, let's be the Beatles with no fun.

This is one of the worst albums I have ever heard

Holy crap what a waste of time.

Psych rock ain’t really my thing

Sweet Jesus this is a load of noodly bollocks

Soooo yea... wtf was that? That was definitely acid fueled 60s songs.

Most song are too psychedelic and experimental for me

Might be interesting from a historical or production perspective, but I didn’t really connect with any of the songs, and they didn’t really seem to be trying to say anything. It’s like they weren’t committed to the vision either. It felt almost like a satire, like Spinal Tap recorded this as a way to make fun of prog/psych rock. Cool cover art though.

No entiendo más de la mitad de lo que ocurre en el disco. No me llega. No lo he disfrutado absolutamente nada

Sorry, but this is way too far down the 60's experimental rabbit hole for me. I hated it.

p112. 1967. 1 star. This might have been tolerable if you were out of your head on a decent tab of LSD. As it is, it's just twee 60's hippy noodling.

Not my style.

noodlin'

Aburrido

Holy shit this ducking sucked ass

I always thought of Pink Floyd as a 70's band and never cared for them much. Never knew they were starting right around the Sgt Pepper time and man, it didn't help my opinion of them. Feels like what I would think a bad knockoff of psychedelic music would be

What. Truly not what I expected from this album. This is a very strange, almost psychedelic album, but has a very different vibe than I've come to expect from Pink Floyd. It is VERY MUCH a product of the 60s. Perhaps important to get this context on what Pink Floyd used to be like, but it's a very weird album and I can't say I enjoyed it.

its old English music ideas from the era with the seeds of psychedelic rock 1.5

No. Pink Floyd failing at psychedelia. They would have faded into obscurity if they had continued on this path.

Halverwege gestopt. Rare muziek, begrijp niet waarom mensen dit zo geweldig vinden.

So weird...experimental sounds and pub sing along quality vocals. Not ready to release but they did anyway. Not good. Apples and oranges!

Pretty terrible. Not a fan of Syd Barrett. 1.5/5

Sounding like a ren fest sound track from space.

Before I started this challenge I had no idea just how much I dislike psychedelic music. But it turns out it’s my least favourite genre! Dreadful stuff. Horrible vocals and screeching instrumentation. Happy when it ended. No thank you. And good God, what are these lyrics: “I’ve got a clan of gingerbread men Here a man, there a man, lots of gingerbread men Take a couple if you wish They’re on the dish” …. followed by a never ending minute of discordant sounds for no reason????? Get me out of here.

Torn. dont like, it, but objecitvely I cna admire what it does. I see it as an interesting historical curiosity - probably breakthough stuff at the time, and shows how far PF developed in their distinctive mastery. I remember int he 80s as a big PF fan trying hard to listen to this but really not liking it. Not much has changed.... I appreicate the originality, interesting stylized stuff (I could really do *without* the painful, oddly nauseating and saddening spacey 9 minute synthesizer trip - very out there, ok done, glad its over! ). But overall, its not that engaging, also think this music would make for an unpleasant terrifying acid trip if this si what was playing in the background. where is the joy and uplift. its not what "wonder" sounds like to me. However, I persisted, and then came to the final tracks.. needed comic releif is provided in the form of THE GNOME which is fun and sounds very stoned & playful. I think teenage stoners of the 80's much have been quoting this, and i didnt understand... So, PF; they have achived a high quality window into distorted perception in this album which experiments a LOT with new sounds, and they had relaitvely little to work with as tools, so well done... Hoorah. also "bike" has some perfect auditory echoes which are hallucinatory (NOx-like) , this would have been very new then. and maybe not understood. But as an album, happy to leave it again for abother 40 years, TBH.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: No it’s ridiculously boring and not gonna be a difficult one to forget. Favourite song: didn’t have one

Fuck off Pink Floyd. Wankers.

Not good

I'm glad they got better after this

Nah, would give this 0/5 if I could

Not really my thing

So here's the deal. I'm gonna do what the editors of this book failed to do, and trim some of the fat. What we got here in this book is 4 Pink Floyd albums. Not as over-done as some of the other artists, but still a bit much. Something has got to go, and this album is the one, as it's just bog standard psychedelia that probably 100 bands were making at the time. And listening to this while not on drugs, is like being completely sober and watching a bunch of strangers tripping out, you feel sad for them, and awkward for yourself. Now for the question of what I would replace this with. The late 60's and the psychedelic rock genre are already absurdly over-represented in this book, but I think a good replacement would be Gal Costa. Let's go with her self-titled sophomore album from 1969. You still get a heavy dose of psychedelia with a lot more mellowness, a lot less self-indulgence, a sweet Brazilian vibe, and infinitely better vocals. And you don't need drugs to enjoy it. As for this wank-fest, I give it one absentminded garden gnome warbling obnoxiously while being panned too aggressively from left speaker to right and back again. 🧙🏼

Astronomy domine- Kinda crazy this came out before man stepped on the moon. Honestly pretty obvious production for a grand space song, but I have to assume this is pioneering👍 Lucifer Sam- gives off anti cat vibes Matilda Mother-this feels like a precursor to Queen, a little more laid back but an interesting instrumental nonetheless. Doesn’t really pull together as a track Flaming- Pretty uninteresting LSD track Pow R Toc H- god this is as boring as you can get More boring (almost) instrumentals (Take Up thy stethoscope, interstellar overdrive) The gnome- This is the worst LSD song I’ve ever heard Chapter 24- Not quite sure how this is an example of genius, randomly taking a chapter from an important Eastern book but ok The scarecrow- This is fine, quiet catchy👍 Bike- outro is interesting, rest is twee nonsense I’m not sure I even like good Pink Floyd 1/5

Holy crap is The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn bad. PF are hit and miss for me but this is terrible and nowhere near them at their best. Syd Barrett was a fucking rubbish musician off his tits on all sorts and we're meant to appreciate it? No. 1/5.

Oh God. I fucking HATE this album. Very thankful Syd underwent his drug-induced mindfuck so they could get Gilmour on board and begin the REAL PF musical odyssey. Any joker who says they actually like this is a poseur assclown that you do NOT want in your life.

Sounds like carnival music. Don't like this Floyd album at all.

absolute drivel

As boring as every other Floyd album, even more so than the wall… shocking. If you need class A drugs to listen to music, is the music really that good? Not all psychedelic rock is bad but all Pink Floyd is pretty boring

Not my type of rock - very distracting and was giving me a headache

Love Pink Floyd. This was not for me.

No le veo algo que me guste

this kinda sucked, tbh

Do people listen to this when they aren't on hardcore mind altering drugs? Because I tried and it sucked.

Okay album didn’t really like it

No thank you. Never again. Really, I’m good.

As good as Pink Floyd became I’m not sure how this album got on this list. I liked some bits of some songs but not one song was worth listening to again.

This was just a cacophony of sounds. It bothered the dogs, it bothered me. Not a fan.

Not my bag at all

Not a fan of the Sid Barrett era

Turned it off. Not sure who would listen to this. Maybe you needed to be there 🤔

Absolute drivel. Idiotic themes and mostly just a jumbled mess.

Stink Floyd

Eh. I don’t like psychedelia. I tried.

Easily some of pink floyds worst. I guess I understand the importance but its a very boring listen.

I did not like it, very weird

It as ok

Didn't chime with me.

not my thing, couldn’t get in to it

Don't rate the early stuff, sorry Syd.

No me gusta Pink Floyd

pour ecouter au complet impossible a jeun faut etre tres peté....non fonctionnel

I think I need drugs to even begin to appreciate this album.

I’ve just never been a Pink Floyd fan. Their songs just don’t seem to grab me.

Not for me.
