I think it was nice while it was on but really drags on during the later half. Don't get me wrong, these are some excellent bass grooves and I like that they savor every bit of it. I just feel like it could have been streamlined a tad and still have gotten the point across. One of the more satisfying listens through this series.
Alright, though some bits get a bit too repetitive and metronomy for me.
Cool mix of electronic beats and jazz. Very much as mood piece where most of the songs sound the same, but it is a nice chill mix to have on! My favourite track is the first one, but perhaps because I have a hard time telling them apart? I do appreciate the sampled spoken Spanish (the sampled vocals sounds like it may be from a film or something with some effect on the vocal - reminds me of maybeshewill?). Very enjoyable!

Okay, this is pretty smooth. I like the mix of old-school (jazz patterns, Latin influences) and new (electronic beats). A lot of it blends together for me, and I think it would have benefitted from a shorter run time, but it's something I can see myself come back to. C

Hahaha wow I know almost all of these songs because they play at the restaurant. I was laughing listening to this because one after another I was going, “Yep, I know this one too.” “Queremos Paz,” “Una Músical Brutal” and “Vuelvo Al Sur” (plus a few others) are probably among my most listened to songs of all time because they play every day at work. Honestly though the music itself is pretty cool. A lounge-y mix of Latin American music with French jazz but… I just can’t separate the music from how I know it. One day, years from now, this will be a 5-star listening experience for the nostalgia. It’s gonna bring back a lot of memories. But today I have to give it a 2 hahah
Soooo good! I definitely recognized "Santa Maria" from when I was in an Electro Swing phase and listening to Pandora a lot at work. It's such a brilliant fusion of musical styles, both of which are known for their high energy and passion. It certainly set a nice mood while laying in the hammock on the balcony this afternoon.
Pros: - I really just love moody noir music... and this album feels like it was created out of red wine, cigarettes, a one night stand after a chance meeting in a jazz bar, and the sound of footsteps down a Parisian alley. - Chunga's Revenge - what a name. Love the snare ghost notes that pull the rhythm off-beat. Cons: - It's place on this list is IMO debatable. It's a very cool overall sound but I wonder what albums aren't on this list that this album has taken the place of. Misc:

I really enjoy this album for it being relaxing but also not boring. There is also a distinct flavor to the sound of it overall, which is different from what I usually listen to and a pleasant change.
This was fine tango music, but why is this one of the albums that I should listen to before I die?

Mixing tango with electronic music is such a good idea, that Gotan Project's debut album still sounds fresh even to this day. The ominous feeling of the violin and the bandoneon, classic tango instruments, are put side to side with lounge beats, and the result is chilling, in a very good way. Santa María (del Buen Ayre)" and "Época" are staples to this very unique genre, and the fact that they've included a cover of Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge" makes listening to this album a fantastic voyage through western music, from Argentina to the world.
I didn't love it, but this is the kind of thing that makes this list worth it. Discover new bands, new songs, new ways of thinking in music. Listening to this kind of "pop tango" was very surprising and also a good experience.

I.... am stunned. This album blew me away! Didn't know this band. I also don't quite know how to describe them. Tango? Jazz? All I know is I love it.
This is the most different and the most beautiful album we've listened thus far. What a shame--it looks like this album didn't even make a blip in the US! The album was wonderful as a whole, and I really can't wait to listen again. It was great to work to!
This was very easy to listen to; it was perfect for both background music and active listening! It reminds me of more upbeat elevator music, and I LOVED the latin flair. Now I am wondering, if someone is going to play "elevator music" in an actual elevator, why they would settle for anything less than this. I didn't feel like I needed to try to understand the occasional, minimal lyrics; they felt more atmospheric than anything and added a nice vibe. This album was a nice surprise!
I mean, it's nice, but I feel like I'm in an overpriced fusion restaurant.
-"Chunga's Revenge" is a cover of the Frank Zappa song, but I could barely tell lol -"Tríptico" has this cool backing groove going on. Very chill, but stuff's going on enough to make it interesting, and it picks up as the song goes on. -I like the intense, syncopated motif in "Una Música Brutal" -"Last Tango in Paris" has like a cool funky groove and a classic French song overlaid on top of each other -"La Del Ruso" has a cool swoosh sound in it and great groove throughout -Very strong 3, but nothing crazy to really pull me back to it, but incredibly solid music

O tango, a milonga e seus demais ritmos são patrimônios de rico valor para o povo argentino bem como uruguaio e por que não sul brasileiro? Gotan deu um jeito de contar as origens com um tom de futuro. Sempre parece uma boa ideia, mas nem sempre dá certo. Mas nesse caso felizmente deu. :)

Very good vibe. Nice french beats, reminds me of a chill version of basement jaxx, just because of the cover. Its a little much sometimes with the solo violin or french harmonica. They can cut your ears at times. A 3 to mee.

I have a weak spot for southamerican music, for trippy beats and for electronic. This fusion totally hooked me from the first minute. I *think* that CD was big in Switzerland, at least I remember that cover art, but never heard of. Thanks to 1001 albums I finally got around listening to it. Will definitively listen to it more, especially for coding / concentration work.
i'm sure this is interesting to someone. i did not find it to be terribly compelling, but i think that's just a matter of personal taste.
It’s wasn’t the worst instrumental album. However the Spanish and various changes in genre made it had to few cohesive. Some songs were more classical. Others were more funky or Latin. It wasn’t bad but still it that great. 3.3/10

It's hard to describe what it is that makes me love and hate this music in equal parts. I loved two songs on this... but it really doesn't matter which ones they were because they all sound roughly the same. Dramatic. Spain. Paris. Cafés. Theatre. That accordion-thing and some strings. The music is interesting, there's a lot going on here but this album fills me with anxiety after about 10 mins. of listening. I'm not sure what it is, but the first two mins. were very enjoyable. The balance of the album had me looking for a bridge to jump off of. In summary, I would rather listen to "Closing Time" by Semisonic on a loop than turn on this album one more time.
An argot is not "Argo." "Argo" was a movie about the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis starring Ben Affleck. Pretty decent flick. Argo was the ship that Jason and the Argonauts built with help from the gods. Argot is neither of those things. It's a slang language used to prevent outsiders from understanding conversations. Y'know, like pig Latin. And actually, the argot from which the name "Gotan Project" derives - Lunfardo, an argot of Rioplatense Spanish (the dialect spoken in Argentina) - is a lot like pig Latin. Tango, with beats and breaks and jazz elements, from a Paris trio with Argentine, French, and Swiss members? Well that sounds interesting. And the style is interesting... for a little while. Then it all blends into the background and feels little same-y. When the Argentinian tango sound is most prevalent is when Gotan Project are at their best. Otherwise it's usually just pretty generic late 90s/early 00s electronica. Reminds me of Portishead, just not nearly as good. But of course, is anyone? Again, when the tango is the driving force in songs, it's better. Iyay ivegay ityay eethray arsstay. Ecentday inyay ethay ackgroundbay.

This is so close to something great, but it falls short. There is a spark of something really interesting here, but it flies a little too close to background music. Still, not unpleasant. Just... not living up to its full potential. This is music for people who hear something like Budos Band or Dub Trio and think, "this would be great if it was toned down even further."
A big surprise it started great, but then slowly got dull for my taste. It’s definitely worth a second listen though. And I will do that.

My first reaction is, "What the hell is this?" 2 songs in, I'm still thinking that, but according to the album title it's "Tango" music, so now I know what the hell this is. But is there a point to listening to this if you're not dancing or watching people dance to it? It's fine. I mean the beats are fine. It's also another world language album, and I've already made myself clear that when albums come up like this, I am forced to focus more on the music, and these songs are quite rhythmic and repetitive likely for dancing purposes. I know a little Spanish, so I can make out some of the lyrics, but overall. I'm underwhelmed. This is basically background music to me.

When I heard the first track I thought this album was on the list just as a nod to the whole Buddha Bar / St Germaine scene and associated compilations. When I recognized the second track, and the third, and on, I realized that this *was* that whole scene.
La revancha de.... no se quién pero esto suena a la peor clase de "mezcla innovadora" de inicios de los 00's que hay. Ese smooth jazz lounge chill con tango uuuh que innovador... No, no son Astor Piazzolla (quien guste vaya a escuchar Libertango mejor si les interesa qué se puede hacer interesante con el ritmo). Música casi para irme al bar de oxígeno y ordenar de la carta de 25 tipos de martinis. Mezclar por mezclar, ni suena bien el tango ni la parte electrónica aporta nada interesante. Es el primer disco que reconozco me salte un par de canciones que iban a 2/3 o 3/4 de acabar y simplemente ya no aguantaba.
Música muy agradable, si bien nada extraordinario. Arriba del ruido de fondo genérico, seguro pondré de nuevo este disco para musicalizar alguna actividad inconsecuente. 2.5 que sube a 3 porque sí pienso escucharlo de nuevo.
¿Tango electrónico? Bien, yo ya había escuchado música de Gotan Project, así que este disco no me resultó nada extraño, pero no había escuchado ninguna de estas canciones. Lo que sí me sorprendió fue que este grupo fuera francés. La primera vez que escuché algo así fue curiosamente en una clase de tango. Supongo que para los “puristas” de ese género escuchar esto es una aberración, pero a mi me pareció genial. Una visión “fresca” del género, y celebro que alguien se haya atrevido a intentarlo. Si bien el disco me agrada musicalmente, siento que el “comentario social” que tienen un par de canciones (ie El Capitalismo Foráneo) era innecesario. Siento que es más una estrategia mercadológica que un verdadero interés por los problemas sociales, pero quizá es algo de la época y lugar, ya que Manu Chao hace algo parecido (pero él se me hace más auténtico). Otra cosa interesante del disco es que las canciones que más me gustaron son las que menos parecen tango: Tríptico “me mamó”, como diría la chaviza, y también “La del Ruso” que parece música africana. Siento que 4 es demasiado, pero 3 muy poco, así que le pondría 3.5 si pudiera.
Me decepcionó bastante y le doy la tercera estrella muy apenas. El recuerdo que tenía de Gotan Project era de mañanas de cruda en el Oktoberfest hace 11 años y por alguna razón recuerdo que en aquel entonces me gustó, aunque quizá era otro de sus discos. No es música mala, simplemente es que la mezcla de lounge con Tango se vuelve tediosa cuando oyes una hora completa de eso. De pronto hasta se siente demasiado mamón el "Argentina… Buenos Aires" Ay cálmate wey.

Good album that I will keep mind of when I need background or study music, the songs are all quite similar though so I would get bored listening to it in other circumstances. Personally I wouldn't say it is a must listen album. Favourite song: Chunga's revenge

It's not bad. But it does verge on the corny for me, as it ALMOST reminds me of electro swing which I find to be the most reprehensible form of music ever conceived. I think French music in general I've never really grasped or fully appreciated (except for maybe Satie) and probably due to my own ignorance, the type of music being referenced here as the basis just kind of goes over my head and comes off as a little kitsch. I can hear some Portishead at a superficial level as well which is probably the frame of reference that allows me to at least have some appreciation for it.

Mi ricordano quei gruppi ospiti nelle trasmissioni in prima serata italiane. Sento la voce di Milly Carlucci che li presenta dicendo "il loro sound unisce l'elettronica e Tango! Pensate che sono primi in tutte le classifiche mondiali!" Dopodiché, partono loro con la musica e il balletto. Comunque qualcosina mi è piaciuta, ma nel complesso mi hanno annoiato. Neanche la produzione mi ha convinto molto.

La del ruso: L'unico pezzo che m'è piaciuto un po'. Ed è quello meno ascoltato su Spotify e questo mi fa sentire un grande hipster edgy. In Conclusione: A me sto disco ricorda due situazioni. Situazione uno: un qualunque lounge bar aperto in zona che fa un qualsiasi cocktail più di 15 euro e fa l'apericena. Te spara sta roba nel locale con le luci soffuse e il cameriere te chiede se mangiate anche qualche stuzzichino perché te gli hai chiesto solo na birra e quindi sei un poveraccio e gli fai pena. Situazione due: Musica stock che mettono sotto alle pubblicità delle imprese locali all'UCI di Porta di Roma, di solito è il gommista oppure il posto che vende le cucine o fa le piastrelle. E' veramente elevator music, sta quasi alla pari di Bill Evans e non si merita manco l'uno perché mi è stato totalmente indifferente. Avrei dovuto dare l'uno a Notorious BIG, ora me ne pento, lui sì che se lo meritava.
Questo disco erano anni che non lo ascoltavo. E' uno di quei dischi che ha qualcosa di sbagliato e scontato però alla fine a me un pò piace, è un pò come la pizza surgelata. Sarebbe un 3 e mezzo ma viva la vita.

Much like Eno's album, this one absolutely fought my attention every step of the way, demanding to stay in the background. And it did.
Weiss nicht vielleicht war ich einfach nicht in der Stimmung aber zu sehr fahrstuhlmusik für mich.
Usually don't get as hooked for what would be "background" music otherwise but this was really well done. There were enough subtle flourishes and nuance between songs to keep it interesting and even the long songs didn't seem as long. Blatantly French, but that added an element. Also invoked Gran Turismo soundtrack vibes.
A solid 3. Agree it's good background music, peppy enough to get a good flow going.

This album was a collage of electronic sounds tied to a jazz-like beat and a tango rhythm, with sprinklings of lyrics wherever necessary. Super interesting and fun to listen to for the first time, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to something similar.
Vraiment pas mal, j'ai adoré le mélange de sonorités d'Amérique latine et de techno/micro. Je ne suis pas fan de ce genre de musique, le manque de parole fait que j'accroche difficilement avec ce type de chansons mais je reconnais la qualité indéniable du travail fournit sur cet album.
Fantastic, groovy, a little clangy at times, reminds me of the "Frantic" soundtrack, a bit of north African trance with the tango.
Mood: both hip generic back drop music for a trendy restaurant and boppy, zone out and dance club hits. At risk of trying too hard this would be fun to throw on at a party to jam to.

Pues bien, vibras muy chill, parecido a lo que despues llamamos chill hop de hecho, musiquita de fondo para estudiar o etc., solo me da curiosidad por qué incluyeron este disco en la lista. Me gustó sobre todo la primera canción y Santa Maria del Buen Ayre, pero he de confesar que sí le di adelantar a varias porque como todo este género es monótono. Si les gustó este álbum puedo recomendar Chairman Maf. Mood: cómo que nisiquiera son argentinxs?

No ubicaba a Gotan Project, pero gran disco ambiental (?). Creo que logra muy bien su fusión de sonidos del tango con más géneros y se vuelve algo muy experimentalón. Lo disfruté mucho y creo que, de cierta forma, se siente su vibra noventera (aunque ya fuera un disco del nuevo milenio). "Queremos paz", "Chunga's Revenge" y "Una música brutal", mis favs. "Vuelvo al sur" tiene una que otra letra padre y como en realidad me gustó todo, aprecio igual sus "cortes" instrumentales, jaja. 10/10
Just not a good mix of the different sounds. It’s missing vocalists, whether rappers or singers, to put more life out of this album, which is an hour of repetitive beats.
Early on the album surprised me and found a delightful european cafe and background instrumental groove that I really enjoyed while working. I was lening 4, but later on it became repetitive and I have to cut down to 3.

Good background music
Great album, cool vibes a lot good tracks perfect for restaurant background music.
This is really not my jam. There was a song with this incredibly loud and piercing bell for some reason. No good para me.
DVD menu music. It's a no from me.
The album reminded me of instrumental music you would hear in a restaurant. This is not to say I didn’t enjoy it but it was too long clocking in at just under 90 minutes. I really need to read the book to see why this made the list.

Nice for a little, just (as my main complaint with most of the albums on here), it's pretty dang long. Nice ambient music. Cool concept, as well. Favorite tracks: "Queremos Paz", "Vuelvo Al Sur"
Ehhh...not sure this should be on the list anymore. It seems very dated by today's standards. But I'm sure it was groundbreaking in its day. Nothing I really would search out to listen to in its entirety again, but some individual tracks are decent.
