This is #day487 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… what looked like a promising endeavor, judging by the description, turned out to be a pretty dull experience. This is far from a must-hear before you die. So background-ish that you end up blending into it. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day488.

An album purely for ambiance. The sound is evocative of some portuguese bands like Madredeus. However, it’s too bland, it could almost be considered drone, even if it is proficiently made.

The songs are blending together at this point and it’s cohesive which is cool but not something I would come back to again, really not my vibe but I like the sounds and the beats. Overall good album but I don’t think I’ll come back to it
Solid but somewhat repetitive for me. Also that accordion (?) made me think of overcooked lol so couldn’t take it too serious.
This is pretty boring. It’s fine for background music, but I can’t really imagine another context.
I'm sure this is someone's cup of tea but it isn't mine. It sounds like songs I would skip on Fifa street. I can appreciate it but it does nothing for me I'm afraid. Best Track: Epoca, because it reminds me of Come dine with me.

Unfortunately not my thing at all. I’m sure it’s good but it is already a genre I dont vibe with at all and it is not in English which is ok but ultimately makes it harder for me to attach w if musically nothing I like is going on. Cool they did a Zappa cover
When this album appeared in 2001, it hit the zeitgeist with unnerving precision. The crowd that had once spent the late eighties and early nineties in a chemically enhanced blur on the dancefloor had, by then, acquired mortgages, toddlers, and a deep yearning for sophistication. Lounge music — that gentle collision of house beats and tasteful melancholy — was the perfect solution. You could feel worldly and hip again, just without the pills, the sweat, or the 4 a.m. regret. This record became their soundtrack. It replaced Buena Vista Social Club as the go-to background for semi-upscale restaurants where you could just about hear yourself say “we really should do this more often.” For a while, it felt as though every restaurant in Europe owned precisely one CD — and this was it. The idea, to be fair, is ingenious: take danceable beats and drape them in tango. Instant atmosphere. But as actual music, rather than mood lighting, it wilts fast. On headphones it becomes fifty-seven minutes of politely hypnotic repetition — the sort of music that makes you wonder whether you’re supposed to tip the percussionist for persistence alone. And the execution doesn’t help. The bandoneon player sounds permanently on the verge of panic, the percussionist seems intent on starting a small regional conflict, and the singer — who faintly resembles Dani Klein of Vaya Con Dios — manages to drain all the sultriness from the room. There are flashes of what might have been: “Tríptico” almost works, and the cover of Last Tango in Paris finally delivers a sliver of genuine drama. But most of it remains the sonic equivalent of mood lighting — pleasant, repetitive, and ultimately disposable. Still, it’s a perfect time capsule. You can almost picture the scene: the couple out for their long-overdue dinner, the waiter reciting the specials, and this music softly purring in the background — a soundtrack for people who once danced until dawn and now just want to make it to dessert.

Trippy kind of mysterious funk that highlights all sorts of instruments and sounds. Very few lyrics, mostly operatic sounding and non-english. 2/10

Never heard of this, but still disappointed: - 20+ albums in and this is the first one of this century, and - i loved the idea of these styles fusion biut - way too repetitive and - so many tango type instruments that can provide such deep emotions but ybfirtunately sound quite hollow here

No me gusta este disco. No me gusta la propuesta de Gotan Project. Nunca lo hizo. Había escuchado poco este disco (y soy argentino), y solo quise escucharlo otra vez antes de ponerle puntaje. No le pongo una estrella porque no es una porquería (supongo que ningún disco de los 1001 debe serlo), pero le pongo dos, que es lo que le sigue. El tango es lo que está en el corazón, lo que te conmueve, lo que viene de adentro, sea el amor por una mujer, la melancolía de tiempos pasados, el recuerdo de los papás, la nostalgia por lo que nunca llegó, la pasión de lo propio, el miedo de la indiferencia de los semejantes, etc.... siempre viene de adentro. Y escucharlo mezclado con electrónica me parece algo muy desagradable, muy artificial, no me gusta nada. Ni siquiera samples del Che Guevara (un héroe nacional muy olvidado en estas últimas dos décadas) en la primera canción puede salvar el disco. Encima el disco es muy largo (suele pasar con la electrónica). Casi todas las canciones se alargan más de lo necesario y, como no hay arreglos muy interesantes en estas canciones, aparecen samples o voces intentando dar un mensaje para justificar la longitud de las canciones. Esto se ve, por ejemplo, en el cover de Zappa Chunga's Revenge: la canción más o menos se mantiene estable por cinco minutos y, para que la espera no se haga insoportable, aparece una voz que nombra a distintos músicos de tango y después dice "es la venganza del tango". Y no sé, man, para eso no digas nada. Aparte parece más bien la "rendición del tango". Si Pichuco criticaba a Piazzolla diciendo que el Conjunto 9 no era tango, ¿qué hubiera dicho de esto? Al pedo nombrarlo. Las canciones que más valen la pena, o las que son más disfrutables son 1. Tríptico: esta sí parece tener varias ideas. Lamentablemente también es una de las canciones más largas del disco y termina rompiendo un poco las pelotas. Mejor hubiera sido acortarla y haber puesto alguna de estas ideas en otra canción más insípida; 2. Una música brutal. Es una de las canciones más cortas del disco (un +), pero además es un poco más pop y kitsch que el resto. Es un poco como A Fifth of Beethoven, ese single disco de los 70s. Está bien; 3. Las dos canciones hechas por capos del tango: Último tango en París del Gato Barbieri y Vuelvo al Sur de Piazzolla. Escuchen el piano de Último tango en París. Compárenlo con el piano de cualquiera de los temas anteriores. El ÚNICO piano anterior relevante que recuerdo es el del ya mencionado Tríptico. En último tango en Paris en cambio hay un poco de emoción. Eso, sumado a ligeros toques de guitarra muy bien aplicados hace que sea mucho mejor que las canciones anteriores. El tema de Pizzolla es, naturalmente, la mejor canción del disco. Pero no se confundan gente. Escuchen la original que está en la banda de sonida de la película Sur (dirigida por Fernando "Pino" Solanas, otro héroe nacional), publicado en 1988 si no me falla la memoria; 4. La del ruso. Este tema es bastante distinto a los anteriores (Una música brutal también lo era), abandonando el tango y siendo más folklórico. Un acierto en mi opinión. Deberían haber sido The Lorefolk Project (?). Me parece que la electrónica hermana mucho mejor con los bombos que con el tango, como Cerati nos enseñó cuando grabó Sulky (casualmente por la misma época que salió este disco). Si prestaron atención habrán observado que el disco termina mucho mejor que como empezó, siendo las últimas 3 canciones relativamente buenas. No modifica lo que dije al principio de la reseña though: dos estrellas.

IF AI took a stab at trying to create Tito Puente as an employee of Radio Shack. Love the latin flavor of this, but at the end of the day it feels more like a "project" that only reminds me of how much I dislike electronica.
“Epoca” was memorable for its upright meditative beat. “Triptico” was nice for how it makes a point where the pacing of the album picked up a lot - which was much needed. I also liked the bass & drum patterns in “Santa Maria”. It had a great groove pocket. But everything else was so similar that it became hard to remember which song I stopped listening to and which song I started listening to. I really appreciate this project for providing a sound closer to something that actually piqued my interest at first, but it does absolutely nothing with that sound. Firm 2/5, good to put on as background music but not any better than a good ambient, lofi, or house album
dynamic music pressed into neatly trimmed sheets of downtempo. technically sound and evocative of Argentine cosmopolitanism, but ultimately not very interesting or emotive. it's okay. deserves to be one of the 1001? this one strikes me as a representation of the entire genre of modern tango rather than an album to listen to in its own right. i feel like it was chosen not because it's particularly significant to electrotango, but because the authors felt that everyone should be familiar with the style and this was easily accessible to a British audience. this not only flattens rich musical lineages into a few token picks, but means that what is chosen becomes the face of the style to everyone but the nerds that care enough to look deeper. so tldr: probably not because i don't think this is a particularly significant example of electrotango. but i could be wrong. if i am, fuck.
Gotta say this was a weird choice.
I get it - start a relentless rhythm/beat and then improvise over it. Any one of these songs on its own wouldn't be too bad but they became pretty tedious very quickly as a whole on the album. Those songs with vocals were welcomed. 2.5/5

Okay album. French Jazz I guess. I can imagine this playing in the background while Dr. Fauchard, my dentist, was performing a root canal.
It's like so bland. The only reason I give it 2 stars: a) it's not annoying when playing in background b) there's Frank Zappa cover here (althought I'd prefer more Zappa albums in list)
Pretty solid background music.. if such a thing even exists. I’m not sure it really needs to be on a list. The cover of Zappa’s Chunga’s Revenge is interesting, I’m not sure I actually like it, but I’ll give them credit for taking it on.
I like the rhythm and the music but overall a pretty forgettable experience.

Another day, another album of mostly instrumentals in a language I am too ignorant to understand. I still wonder why it is the electronica/techno/instrumental albums have to be so dang long? I am not saying these artists have to be the Ramones and sing 2-minute songs, but does every track have to be 5+minutes? I am trying to determine why La Revancha Del Tango needs to be in this book. What am I listening to that is so notable that I shall not pass from this mortal coil prior to listening to all 10 tracks and 58 minutes(!) of this album? After two listens, I'm afraid I still not sufficiently answer that question.
So boring. Added 1 star for anyone who wants to tango.
It felt like Everything But the Girl meets tango. I guess not bad but also not my thing. And I found myself reaching for the skip button towards the end of the album so...

This is pleasant enough as background music. It sounds like it could just play on a loop in a boutique clothing store in the early 00s. Honestly, I'm not sure how this is on the list, but it was... indeed a thing I listened to once, and will likely never again.
A ver, no me ha molado mucho la verdad. Todo el álbum es instrumental y de vez en cuando hablan un poco, y la verdad es que 1 hora de solo instrumental me ha cansado bastante. Hay algunas que no estaban tan mal a mi gusto, aunque si que la gran mayoría se hacían repetitivas y demasiado largas. No es algo que volvería a escuchar.

When I saw the cover I was expecting a misogynistic hip hop album. This isn't that at all, but I'm not sure it's whole lot better. Really adding an exotic touch to elevator music.

Listened in the truck via YouTube music. Not sure why this is on this list. It’s mood music for accordion lovers. Like Eastern European Thievery Corporation. Not horrible, just not something that would interest me again unless I was throwing a Greek themed dinner party and wanted a chill vibe.

It was fine? Pleasant even. It's a neat mix of dance beats, french music, tango and electronica? It was nice while it was on, but I have no memory of any track. It really blurred together into a pleasant blob. At one point I was worried that the album had started over again, but i was on the last song. It was a surprisingly long album of music that sort of sounded all the same. I didn't hate it? It has elevator Muzak energy. But elevated Muzak... so elevator music*? I dunno. 2.5 maybe? I forget.
Looks like a soundtrack for a boring novela
Well I didn’t know that I didn’t like tango until now. It’s interesting I guess but then they keep getting the damn awful accordion out. I’m also unimpressed at the track that had me keep on pausing it to see what my dog was barking about. Only to discover she wasn’t barking at all. Not funny or clever.

This might be the worst album cover of the 1000, but the music was better than my very low expectations. Decent background music, some of these tracks could be used to make some pretty cool hip hop beats.

This is OK but it wears a bit thin. It's not atmospheric enough to be great background music, and doesn't really have the grooves and melodies to be something I actively nod along with. Not bad but it's an album that just... happens
I have the faintest memories of encountering this album, or at least Gotan, sometime in my early 20s maybe, when I would still hang out with folks who didn’t all have a shared musical vocabulary. Or to put it more specifically: with people who weren’t Music Fans. I occasionally envy these folks or at least whatever image I have constructed of them. It’s me and art museums: sure, I like some paintings, even love a few, but I could only pick out a Degas from a Manet or an early Picasso sketch from a Dali if I really tried and it’d probably be a coin toss. A life where you maybe have a few playlists saved or in the old days, a CD wallet with 12 out of 20 slots filled, largely going unlistened. La Revancha del Tango surely makes up a healthy minority of these collections.
I guess it was fine, made for decent background music at first but it felt a little repetitive to me. I admit the language barrier keeps me from really being able to speak to the lyrics but even sonically it just didn’t do much for me.
This is all pretty decent music. First impression was that it all sounded like "James Bond Background Music" - Slightly jazzy, modern, a little exotic.

Eh easy play through, not for me.
So refined it’s boring. Sounds like it was made to be sampled or as a background to porn, depending upon which movement you’re forced upon. 1.5 for not loathing it.
Less offensive than lots of other electronica. I still feel like I fell asleep and woke up to the DVD menu repeating forever. This isn’t something I’d listen to and analyze and it doesn’t make me feel anything other than anxious for it to end.
I won't be saving this, and it's unlikely I'll revisit, but I really didn't have a bad time with this, if i was able to give a 2.5 I would, but based on my criteria of 3's being albums I've saved, I think this will have to be a harsh 2.

4/10 It sits in the background and rumbles along in its inoffensive way. It's well produced, but an hour? Oof, it was a bit of a slog. I don't begrudge this album being on the list, assuming it represents a high mark in Euro-electronic reinterpretations of Tango music. I would question how they have managed to take the soul out of something meant to be so raw. It does nothing for me - most of it feels like it could be on a Brittany Ferries infomercial

These are some looong songs. I can imagine some of them as part of a movie soundtrack. Not my fave, but definitely different to a lot of other stuff I’ve heard.

Sounded like I was shopping in one of those boutiques downtown that charges $200 for a blouse. But seriously I just can't get down with repetitive music like this. Each track is interesting for the first minute or so. By minute 5 I'm losing my mind. Fav track was Epoca.
I had not previously heard of the artist or album. This is kind of electronic, almost ambient. It might be pretty good background music actually. That said, this isn't my kind of music or something I see myself seeking out again.

The mix of electronica and tango is definitely novel and interesting. I think it doesn't really do enough to justify it's runtime though and I got a bit bored by the end.
The weather channel used to just give you the local forecast on loop like every 10 minutes and this is what I recall the music sounding like.

definitely a lot less 'electronic' sounding than most electronic music i've ever heard and an interesting spin on the formula that is very tango-forward. that being said, i was a bit bored out of my mind with the repetitive nature of most of these tracks, even with the added bonus of jazz improvisation over it. just not my thing, really.

Elektronische salsa, tango of wat dan ook. Ik kan vol vertrouwen uitspreken dat ik hier nul affiniteit mee heb, en dat was dan ook te merken tijdens de luisterbeurt. Ik vind het altijd vervelend dat mensen stijlen waar ze niet of nauwelijks ervaring mee hebben afdoen als 'liftmuziek' of 'loungemuziek', terwijl er vaak echt wel wat meer in zit. Toch ga ik mij er ook schuldig aan maken. Het voelde als één lange mixtape die je zou horen in een zomerse beach club, met nul variëteit wat je doet laten denken dat het om een album gaat. Ik vond de trip hop achtige songs wel echt groovy, en instrumenten laten een koude winterdag toch een beetje opfleuren, maar echt ondersteboven kan ik van deze 'lukewarm' downtempo-muziek niet geraken. 6/10
Ik houd niet zo van tango. In dit elektronische jasje is het wel geinig. Maar het is niet veel meer dan relaxte ambient muziek voor op een terrasje met een spritz of sour. En als ik naar buiten kijk is zo'n situatie heel veel weg. 4,5/10 Highlights: -

very different. liked the first few songs (about the first 2 or 4 songs) but then everything else started to sound the same so that's why i'm rating it a low number...
Swishy combination of trip hop/instrumental hip hop DJ production techniques and tango rhythms and some jazzy piano. Kind of a novelty, but it works well. Good for working and zoning out or for playing in the atrium of your neo-art deco hotel lounge.
It's like slightly more interesting elevator music.
The whole album feels like what a vampire would play if they opened a gastropub.
Not for me honestly. I found this really grating and repetitive. I like tango and I can like some of the trip hop aspects of it... it just becomes pretty tedious after a while. The singing and speaking is what I found most obnoxious.
Maybe the best dumb electro-ish album on this list. Still pretty dull.
I often hear musicians say that they have drawn a lot of influence from the Gotan Project. (not) This album felt like shopping for clothes I can't afford.

After a while all these trip hop albums start to blend together as forgettably long mush. This at least had a Latin flavor to it. Still not my thing, not as bad as others.
Wasn’t bad to listen to while I was doing other stuff, but when I wasn’t it was pretty boring. High 2.
4/10 - I do not really remember it. It was alright. The songs all flowed together and I do not plan on returning to it.
This would make a great liveshow. Regarding the album... Usable as background music for a hangout or something. Not sure how I feel about this (I don't like the accordion or whatever that is). Anyway, it's an interesting fusion. I can't give this a three, sorry.
This is the kind of repetitive, impossibly hip music that I hear in pretentious clothing stores or trendy cocktail bars. Not for me, but ok for background music I guess.
Not bad, but not really my kind of music. I recognised Época from some TV ads. I like that they covered Zappa, but the original Chunga's Revenge instantly transports you in a way that's difficult for another band to reproduce.
Favorite Track: Una Música Brutal
Had been wondering if this list was entirely Anglo (having forgotten about Ravi Shankar) when this turns up in Spanish by a French band. Unfortunately I found it really boring.

New album from an group that I missed at the time. Too much of that '97-'02 lounge vibe for me, but I can appreciate some of the songs and their choice of covers.
Listened to this while playing Return to Dark Tower solo. I lost. This wasn't a bad album...but it absolutely should not be included on this list. Replace this with the soundtrack to Waking Life, and you'd have something similar, but with more excitement.
Excellent chill study music. Primo vibes.

French electronica / tango / nu jazz! Why this album is in this list is anyone's guess because I'm not sure what to make of this album. The album is pleasant enough, but ultimately boring and doesn't really go anywhere. However, pour yourself a Pastis 51, light a Gauloises, and chill.
A little too tango and repeating electronic beats - kinda monotonous
At times I felt like I could be on vacation, at others watching a sensual tango in a movie, and then there were some when I felt like I was listening to hold music. The remixes helped, particularly the one with Antipop Consortium, but overall this was not for me.

My brain keeps filling in a laughtrack and sped up clips of people looking confused while I listen to this. I feel like I'm in a straitjacket in a white padded cell.

Jazz fusion with latin undertones. Works about as well as cold nuclear fusion: despite its promise, nobody's been able to make it work. I feel like a lot of my time was wasten listening and waiting for something different that just never came.

Electronic music with a tango tinge…performed by French guys with a ton of Spanish influence. That odd mix of things all come together and form an album that I thought was super interesting if not really for me. That said fans of beeps and boops will dig this electric tango.
Couldn't decide if I'd heard a few of these tracks on car adverts or if they just generally sounded like car advert music. Would have made acceptable background music I think but I listened to it on the train and it was a bit dull and aimless. Inoffensive but not sure I can point to any part that stood out or interested me.
This was fine as background music while I was working but as soon as I paid any attention to it I was extremely bored.
Nothing to dislike here really, nice and chilled background music that plods along. Good to have on while working but wouldn't choose to listen otherwise 2.5

Previous Familiarity: None! Trip-Hop Tango. Sounds interesting right?!?! Well...yes it is interesting, on the surface, but really, it lacks soul. The dark mysterious aesthetic perfected by Portishead and Massive Attack is attempted here, with little success. Hell, there's even a Tricky soundalike that lends vocals to the 3rd track "Chunga's Revenge" and it just feels like a cheap ripoff. In fact this whole album feels like a cheap ripoff. I don't know shit about tango, other than its sex appeal. And, there is sexiness to be found in some of these grooves, but the out-of-place accordion-like jaunt of the bandoneon kinda gives me an uncomfortable visual: one of a sexy couple swaying and grinding on dimly lit dancefloor. However, in the corner lurks a creepy mustachioed old man pulling on his squeezebox with a coy smirk on his face when one of the dancers dips down low so he can get a show. Still interested? Neither am I.
Started out very strong with a great soundscape but did nothing interesting with it. Over stayed its welcome immensely.

While what is here of the instrumentation is great, it's too little too often to fully get into. More instrumental layering would do wonders. The 3 remix tracks at the end feel super out of place.

Tango and electronica sounds collide into a smooth mixture of sounds that wouldn't be uncommon for an upscale lounge or professional dance studio. It's accessible, and ahead of its time for being released in 2001. Today, it feels like the world has caught up to the album; turning this into another chill-hop tracklist.

Like a hand rolled cigarette learned to tango and make overly serious expressions. Interesting in concept but after a few steps and side eyes you just want to set it on fire.
Production was good, but the vocals lowered the rating. The album also fell off on the back end.

Quite enjoyed it as background music for the first 20 minutes or so. But it's a combination of low-fi dance music and Latin, both genres that tend (for me at least) to get pretty repetitive pretty quickly, and it really does. 2/5, fine for background (and better than a lot of this kind of thing than we've had), but really nothing more.

This is a cousin of hip hop: rather than writing music then adding a beat, it is clearly built by starting with a beat, then adding snippets of repetitive music phrases over it. It's tedious. It doesn't create a song, it's just an ambience masquerading as music. The ambience is reasonably pleasant, but I still hate it. Anyone with a computer could create this.

The idea of combining tango and electronica is interesting, but the album turned out pretty boring. It seems both the artists behind this were electronic musicians, so the tango components were mostly samples. And in this case, the remix is not really adding much value to the originals.
This music was somewhat entertaining, more so as it went on, however I don’t understand how it’s considered influential. Towards the end I started to enjoy but I think it was much too long.
Never really elevated itself beyond occasionally interesting muzak, shame really but the more interesting bits never seemed to take it any further

Wow a rare album from somewhere other than the US or UK on this list. That's a win, but the album review also describes the songs as filled with blase variations on the themes. I think that's apt, but then why choose this album for the list? Pleasant to listen to, but very much background music to me.

Some beats would start off okay and pull me in but I would be just so put off by that melodica accordion sound, and some other production that almost sounded like it was lifted right out of the Garage Band sound library. Didn’t really gel with this one but can’t win them all. Fave track: Tríptico

Listen to this album if you want to feel like an expensive chocolate praline trapped inside an advert, forever being licked in a sensual way by posh women. I have very little else in terms of frames of reference for the Gotan Project's "La Revancha Del Tango"- it's quite unlike anything I've had so far on the list, automatically lending it an enticing, enigmatic air. This perfectly suits the music running through the album, making it an intriguing listen... for the first fifteen minutes or so. The basic premise of the Gotan Project is a group of French musicians aiming to revive tango as a popular music genre for a new 21st century. They draw upon electronica, downtempo and trip-hop, yielding a smoky cocktail of mood music. Accordion and violin reign supreme, sitting comfortably alongside synthesised bass and programmed drums. I did enjoy the mood it got across, but ultimately "La Revancha Del Tango" becomes repetitive and a little dull. The electronic treatment doesn't offer much dynamic range, and the performances are measured and laidback, without a great deal of showiness or passion. There are some standouts- the breezy elegance of "Last Tango in Paris", the steaminess of "Epoca" and "Santa Maria", the relatively frantic, discordant piano at the end of "La del Ruso." It certainly isn't bad, and I appreciate that maybe in a different mood, I'd find a lot more to like in this. Today, though, it wasn't quite for me.
I enjoy some tango but I guess I'm not exactly ecstatic with this modern take on tango. It's fine, but I guess some classics shouldn't be improved on, especially if someone thinks that they can improve by using late 90s, very early 00's poorly aged beats and remixes. Also, the album is way too long given how mediocre the music is. 4/10.

A bit of jazz thrown into the mix too. Quite liked the simultaneous eclectic mix of genres within at first, but the novelty wore off by half way. Fine as background music. De ramen zijn afgeplakt, er is slechts een neon bord dat aangeeft dat hier een discotheek zit. Je vraagt of je even mag plassen, de propper kijkt om zich heen en zegt 'oke maar wel snel'. Wanneer je naar binnen loopt begint het te dagen. De club is 3 na leeg. Ze hebben allemaal een pak aan, en staan los van elkaar. Wanneer je aan de barman vraagt of je naar het toilet mag zegt hij dat je eerst een drankje moet bestellen. Bier schenken ze niet. Je vraagt dan maar om een baco'tje en loopt gauw naar de wc. Als je weer terugkomt staat hij klaar. "Dat is dan "16,50" zegt de barman. Godverdomme, je bent er ingeluisd. Je wordt keihard nagestaard als je weer naar buiten loopt door de paar mensen die binnen staan. En de muziek die binnen gedraaid wordt? Dit album.

Wrong list for this one
Dipping my toe into a new genre, this will be my first foray into Electrotango. Combining tango rhythms with electronic beats, we hear La Revancha Del Tango breathe new life into old styles. How does it fare? It's alright. A lot of Gotan Project felt like background music to me, soundtracking my morning as I eat breakfast and get ready for work. Reminiscent of menu music for a video game, perhaps. There were some interesting parts but nothing really stood out all that much. Pleasant enough listen but not something I would revisit.

Bog house music with a bog French twist. It annoys me that any non-Anglosphere music here has to have the idiot author's idea of an exotic flavour. It can't just be good rock music or something. So there are no Noir Desir or Die Toten Hosen albums, because unless there's a ridiculous "foreign overtone" Dimery doesn't want to know about it. After all, how could you list a foreign-language rock band when there are only a kazillion UK rock bands and we haven't gotten through all of them yet?! Anyway, this was too boring and too long. 2/5.

Back in the late 90s and early naughts the Hotel Costes, Buddha Bar lounge music was all the rage and I bought a whack of these CDs. Gotan Project had a slightly different sound, with its Argentinian tango vibe. Someone aptly described it as Astor Piazzolla IDM Music. Unfortunately 20 yrs later it hasn’t aged well, sounding vapid and repetitive. This would be fine in a hotel bar or at a dinner party but I would want something more substantive myself. The cover of Zappa’s Chungas Revenge is also vastly inferior to the original as accordions and dance beats just don't capture the mood of Max Bennett’s bass lines and Zappa’s guitar.

Hahaha wow I know almost all of these songs because they play at the restaurant. I was laughing listening to this because one after another I was going, “Yep, I know this one too.” “Queremos Paz,” “Una Músical Brutal” and “Vuelvo Al Sur” (plus a few others) are probably among my most listened to songs of all time because they play every day at work. Honestly though the music itself is pretty cool. A lounge-y mix of Latin American music with French jazz but… I just can’t separate the music from how I know it. One day, years from now, this will be a 5-star listening experience for the nostalgia. It’s gonna bring back a lot of memories. But today I have to give it a 2 hahah
