Have not heard of this band before but dayummm, I really dig this album but it kinda deduct a star for being super repetitive. Its still groovy tho!

I think those scammers who “play” violin in parking lots use this album.

Sophisticated, smooth and chill French electronica with tango influences. This is a very good background music also because for almost the whole album it is instrumental. It's a bit long and feels repetitive here and there, but otherwise it's a great album.

Enjoyed the vibe then about 2/3 of the way through it felt very repetitive and skipped the last 1/3.

First song was very promising - a nice and quite original mix of electronic music and latino rhytms. Melody was as catchy as the beat. But for the rest of the album, so another 50 minutes or so, I felt like I'm listening to the remix of that song in few different versions. It was repetitive and tiring, it just seemed like Gotan Project took a nice idea for a song and made a full record out of it. Overall, it wasn't too good, but wasn't that bad either, definitely I had worse experience with other albums like that.

Quite enjoyed it as background music for the first 20 minutes or so. But it's a combination of low-fi dance music and Latin, both genres that tend (for me at least) to get pretty repetitive pretty quickly, and it really does. 2/5, fine for background (and better than a lot of this kind of thing than we've had), but really nothing more.

Perfect album to chill out to for an hour on my flight

La Del Ruso is the track that made this album click for me. I was enjoying the album, but nothing about it was a specially compelling to me as more than background music until the last 2 tracks and they are cool enough to elevate this album. In general, this is a cool mix of electronica Latin/South American grooves.

I've never heard of this band before, but this album was okay. It was pleasant enough to listen to, but nothing here really stood out at all.

“La Revancha del Tango,” that is a little pretentious name for a record not released by Gardel, even more pretentious for a non-Argentinian artist. It is a fun album, to be honest; something to put as background music, do your stuff, and somehow feeling sophisticated while doing it. I don’t think it as either innovative or influential, so it ranks low on those boards. Should I listen to it before dying? Don’t know, maybe to feed a little my inner snob self?

This is a cousin of hip hop: rather than writing music then adding a beat, it is clearly built by starting with a beat, then adding snippets of repetitive music phrases over it. It's tedious. It doesn't create a song, it's just an ambience masquerading as music. The ambience is reasonably pleasant, but I still hate it. Anyone with a computer could create this.

This type of Starbucks coffeehouse "electronic" jazz music is just not my thing. I started it and tried but ended up just skipping through because I find it extremely boring. Nothing against the musicians, I'm sure they're great at what they do but I'm just not interested. Standout Tracks: N/A

The idea of combining tango and electronica is interesting, but the album turned out pretty boring. It seems both the artists behind this were electronic musicians, so the tango components were mostly samples. And in this case, the remix is not really adding much value to the originals.

This was ok. I would probably have been interested in this if was released a few years earlier when I was into DJing “cool music” at “cool bars”. Not very exciting to me in 2023 though.

It's very classy. It feels like the sort of late afternoon on a comedown music you'd listen to before you head out again. Or very early 00s ethical vegetarian café. As a result, it's much more of a background album than a foreground album. Not riveting but pleasant

This music was somewhat entertaining, more so as it went on, however I don’t understand how it’s considered influential. Towards the end I started to enjoy but I think it was much too long.

I cheated and looked at what some others of you had written and with full credit I'll paraphrase the top comment: "this is like high-class on-hold music." I definitely expect an abrupt interruption any time with "...you are caller number....THIRTEEN.... do *not* hang up....." Very nice background music to work to. Very pleasant. Not much more than that. 5/10 3 stars.

Wow a rare album from somewhere other than the US or UK on this list. That's a win, but the album review also describes the songs as filled with blase variations on the themes. I think that's apt, but then why choose this album for the list? Pleasant to listen to, but very much background music to me.

Bij dit album had ik niet verwacht een nummer te herkennen, maar de Calgonit reclame kwam al vrij snel voorbij. Ik was klaar om deze rechtenvrije vlogmuziek af te vlammen (track 1), maar met vlagen is het een soort eenvoudige Massive Attack als die als kind in een toverketel met paella waren gevallen (track 3). Carel Kraayenhof met een drumcomputer. En dat vind ik dan wel weer lekker.

I've never heard of the Gotan Project or any of the music on La Revancha Del Tango. I enjoyed the album because it was different that what I would normally listen to, but had ties to music that I'm interested in. I often enjoy listening to traditional music. I enjoyed the mix of traditional elements of latin musice with music that reminded me of late 90s alternative / electronica / indie-pop. I didn't pick out any true favorites from the album, but I could easily do a re-listen of the entire album.

To quote the top review of this album: 'It's like high quality phone hold music' Can't believe I'd actually heard Época before, must be from a 2003 car insurance advert. I imagine it twins well with relaxing on a balcony, supping your morning brew overlooking the Mediterranean.

Gotan Project traffics in something called Neotango (or "Mystic Tango," according to the book), and I was so sure I was going to hate this based on the name and description that I put off listening to it for a day. It actually (mostly) worked. The creativity and musicianship is incredibly impressive and I actually came away from it wanting more. A really intriguing surprise. Best track: Vuelvo Al Sur

Let me tell you about the early 00's kids. You couldn't stand on a line at Starbucks without hearing this. It was so trendy, you pulled the 'Free iTunes Download Card' from the sugar station and downloaded it onto your iPod. It was so good you bought tons of Pepsi products to get the better-than-cash-iTunes-codes to download the rest of the album. Or you got it on Napster and never listened to it again. Anyways, a different perspective on the retro-techno-trend. 3/5.

This list has a ton of gimmick 90s electronica albums fusing various genres, and today we have a tango-based one. But it's good. Trip hop usually is, and this also has many elements of house in it. It's ambient and low key with a high production value, usually justifying the extensive lengths of many tracks. Some pop hits but also some more interesting instrumentals. Doesn't fall into cliche tactics. I know it's cheating since it's an experimental take on the genre, but this is the first tango album to keep me engaged for so much of it. The main issue is that, although the electronic beats make it accessible to mainstream audiences, it restricts the fluidity of tango rhythm, and thus lacks the "passion" that makes tango stand out. Second side was weaker, and the total length was too long. Favorites: Queremos Paz, Epoca, Santa Maria, Last Tango in Paris

It's trying to be Latin, it's trying to be Jazz but it has no fucking heart so ends up feeling like I'm trapped in an elevator with Herman Chavez:- Muzak Magician Extraordinaire.

This is a great album. lovely Mediterranean /South American/ambient vibe.

After hearing Buena Vista Social Club I did say I was excited to hear some more non-English speaking music so hear we are with ‘La Revancha Del Tango’ by Gotan Project, however the issue here is that the majority of tracks are instrumentals so you don’t get the benefit of hearing the vocals. I’ll start with the 2 tracks that included some lyrics, ‘Época’ and ‘Una Música Brutal’, the former of the 2 features some lovely vocals sprinkled throughout the track whilst the instrumental is led by what I can only guess to be some sort of accordion/harmonica or maybe even a keyboard, chirping in the background. It’s quite a slow moving track but it gives you the feeling of being in a spy/action movie which is unique. The 2nd song of the 2 is lead by that same instrument but now there as some rhythmic drums keeping the track together with some similar vocals to the first track mentioned. The rest of the songs follow a fairly similar instrumental pattern but vary quite a bit in length making up this hour long album, it can really feel like not a lot is happening at times which is disappointing because the sound is very unique. I’m really not sure how often I’ll return to this, I found it interesting but nothing really peaked my interest I can just appreciate the sound that this album is. 3/5

Electronica Tango.. A Strange combination, but it works..

Generally liked this OK though it fell into that synth monotony issue, and the electronica component often felt like an overlayer that did not quite integrate.

Primo lounge music! I'd make the absolute chook out of a dinner to this album. And I don't say that as a knock in the slightest! Enough layers that you can sink into it, but easy going enough that it could sit cooly underneath a night of cocktails. Maybe my first proper discovery of the project, will be coming back! Fave track: Chunga's Revenge

Sacré bleu! Not sure I was missing out on a whole lot when I hadn’t heard electronica/tango fusion. Some beats would start off okay and pull me in but I would be just so put off by that melodica accordion sound, and some other production that almost sounded like it was lifted right out of the Garage Band sound library. Didn’t really gel with this one but can’t win them all. Fave track: Tríptico

Upon first seeing what I was in store for with today's album, I didn't have high hopes for it. I am typically not a fan of electronica at all. The thing that set this out from the rest of the electronica I've heard on this generator is the fact that it is apparently a blend of tango music and French music with electronica overlaid. I was still unsure, but it sounded more appealing than the robot fucking soundtrack that I've been forced to listen to thus far with this genre. What I heard was very weird, but interesting. Violin and accordion music that made you feel like you were sitting in a 5 star French restaurant while a rave went on in it at the same time. All this, and Spanish lyrics, tango underpinnings, and a modern twist. It was so different, but not in a bad way. Overall, for once, not a terrible electronica album. Not something I would gravitate to, but I wouldn't care if it was on either. Favourite songs: Queremos Paz, Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre), El Capitalismo Foraneo, Una Musica Brutal Least favourite songs: Last Tango In Paris, La Del Ruso 3/5

Listen to this album if you want to feel like an expensive chocolate praline trapped inside an advert, forever being licked in a sensual way by posh women. I have very little else in terms of frames of reference for the Gotan Project's "La Revancha Del Tango"- it's quite unlike anything I've had so far on the list, automatically lending it an enticing, enigmatic air. This perfectly suits the music running through the album, making it an intriguing listen... for the first fifteen minutes or so. The basic premise of the Gotan Project is a group of French musicians aiming to revive tango as a popular music genre for a new 21st century. They draw upon electronica, downtempo and trip-hop, yielding a smoky cocktail of mood music. Accordion and violin reign supreme, sitting comfortably alongside synthesised bass and programmed drums. I did enjoy the mood it got across, but ultimately "La Revancha Del Tango" becomes repetitive and a little dull. The electronic treatment doesn't offer much dynamic range, and the performances are measured and laidback, without a great deal of showiness or passion. There are some standouts- the breezy elegance of "Last Tango in Paris", the steaminess of "Epoca" and "Santa Maria", the relatively frantic, discordant piano at the end of "La del Ruso." It certainly isn't bad, and I appreciate that maybe in a different mood, I'd find a lot more to like in this. Today, though, it wasn't quite for me.

This was fine for background music, but wouldn’t be adding it to my list of favorites. I can see keeping it on hand if you want some unobtrusive tunes at a dinner party or something similar, but I prefer my music to have a deeper connection for me.

Put 'electronic','tango' and 'French' together and this is what you get. Quite enjoyable. Now pass the Gaulloise.

This was very nice indeed, chilled out beats, floating vocalists, just really nice! Will make its way into my collection I don’t doubt. Muchos enjoyment! It won’t be for everyone, but fans of the likes of Portishead and Goldfrapp will enjoy!

I enjoy some tango but I guess I'm not exactly ecstatic with this modern take on tango. It's fine, but I guess some classics shouldn't be improved on, especially if someone thinks that they can improve by using late 90s, very early 00's poorly aged beats and remixes. Also, the album is way too long given how mediocre the music is. 4/10.

Like the best DVD menu music you've ever heard. Barry Adamson makes albums where they're supposed to be soundtracks to movies that don't exist, but I feel this album fits that description far more successfully.

Interesting mixture

A bit of jazz thrown into the mix too. Quite liked the simultaneous eclectic mix of genres within at first, but the novelty wore off by half way. Fine as background music. Fun beats with some fun rhythm

I've had this album on HEAVY rotation for the last 20 years. I'm absolutely tickled that it made the list. Hey, one fewer scottish new wave post punk boy album!

Fun and enjoyable album! It really brought the tango into the modern world.

Groovy. That accordion sounds stunning against the trip-hop beats. A genuinely surprising and unexpected melodic blend of instruments and genres.

It was nice, I guess. Made me feel like I was in a fancy parlor or something. It is not something I would choose to listen to, though. Just my personal preference.

Kijk, ik vind dit soort maffe culturele crossovers dus ontzettend leuk. Tango-accordeonnetje, wat gezwam in het Spaans, beatje eronder. Maar erg afwisselend is deze plaat niet, en dan wordt het al snel loungemuzak uit de serie Café del Mar 1 t/m 99. Vooruit, ik word er op zich wel blij van, dus ik ben genereus met de sterren vandaag.

In de basis een dansplaat (tango), maar voor mij vooral een heerlijke luisterplaat. Prachtige combinatie van klassieke instrumenten en opzet (tango) en de moderne mogelijkheden en opzet (beats). Het zit ontzettend goed in elkaar. Lekker ongeforceerd. Meerdere lagen neerzetten als een eenvoudig geheel. Dat is een prestatie.

Tango met een hip beatje eronder. Mr Oizo meets Air meets Carel Kraayenhof. Maxima keurt het goed. "O, op deze plaatje kan ik de hele nacht wel dansen!"

Um argentino, um francês e um suíço fazem tango, mas não é tango, é eletrotango. A música é lenta, gostosa, repetitiva. A bateria é seca, a melodia é simples, as vozes são macias. Tudo em espanhol, é claro. O violino chora em Chunga’s revenge. Acho que tem uma gaita também. Algumas músicas tem um quê de faroeste. Em questão de estrutura, as músicas se assemelham um pouco ao techno. Frases longas, mudanças lentas, repetição… Tem gaitas sim.

Je bent op vakantie in het buitenland. Tijdens uitgaan loop je over straat en moet je pissen. Om je heen zie je een propper nerveus aan z'n gezicht frummelen en kaken knauwend of stijf op elkaar. De ramen zijn afgeplakt, er is slechts een neon bord dat aangeeft dat hier een discotheek zit. Je vraagt of je even mag plassen, de propper kijkt om zich heen en zegt 'oke maar wel snel'. Wanneer je naar binnen loopt begint het te dagen. De club is 3 na leeg. Ze hebben allemaal een pak aan, en staan los van elkaar. Wanneer je aan de barman vraagt of je naar het toilet mag zegt hij dat je eerst een drankje moet bestellen. Bier schenken ze niet. Je vraagt dan maar om een baco'tje en loopt gauw naar de wc. Als je weer terugkomt staat hij klaar. "Dat is dan "16,50" zegt de barman. Godverdomme, je bent er ingeluisd. Je wordt keihard nagestaard als je weer naar buiten loopt door de paar mensen die binnen staan. En de muziek die binnen gedraaid wordt? Dit album.

Enjoyed this a lot more than expected, very cool album with a sort of ambient electronic Latino vibe. Saved tracks: Queremos Paz, Triptico, Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre), El Capitalismo Foraneo

It's interesting, in the way that if Phish were born and raised in Argentina would be interesting.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected, but wouldn't listen to this unless I was in a specific mood.

This is like quintessential hotel lounge music, but I actually like it. Perfect background music for putting on while doing chores, working, cooking, etc. Glad I was introduced to this band.

This is a jazzy, tango like electronica album with Argentinian and European musicians. The beats are very subtle and fuse French and Argentinian instrumentation well. There is a lot going on in the background as well with interesting melodies and chord changes.

Très étrange, mais la plupart des groupes avec <<projet>> dans leur nom sont assez étranges. Presque toutes les chansons n'ont pas de voix, et certaines ont des choix d'instruments très étranges. Cet album n'est pas terrible, mais il n'est pas non plus très bon. Je l'ai un peu aimé, mais je ne le réécouterai pas.

Sounds like soundtrack music for like any artsy movie from the 90s. Thats not an entirely bad thing, but it does get kinda old after a few tracks. 3/5

Music to relax in small cappuccino bar when the skies are grey and wind blows shades of rain trough the mai street. At times the violin is a screwdriver inside all that musical wellness.

The first track felt like an intro to something potentially promising. Unfortunately, it wasn't. It's just very basic, boring electronica with some splashes of tango and french cabaret music. I was hoping the Zappa cover would be interesting (I do adore Frank Zappa). But again, it wasn't. I skipped the last three tracks.

Dipping my toe into a new genre, this will be my first foray into Electrotango. Combining tango rhythms with electronic beats, we hear La Revancha Del Tango breathe new life into old styles. How does it fare? It's alright. A lot of Gotan Project felt like background music to me, soundtracking my morning as I eat breakfast and get ready for work. Reminiscent of menu music for a video game, perhaps. There were some interesting parts but nothing really stood out all that much. Pleasant enough listen but not something I would revisit.

Maria is the famous track. Interesting project, but each track overstays it's welcome - perhaps so that the full Tango dance can be completed? Pleasant enough, but a little boring for a full album.

Surprisingly great! And I only say surprisingly because this was completely foreign to me in every definition of the word. 5 stars!

Credit should be given where credit is due. If I hadn't heard this in early 202, I wouldn't have listened to the Astor Piazzolla Prom in 2002 (it wasn't just Piazzolla, but that's what took me to it, and that's what stuck, and that's why he gets the credit, damnit!), and my life would still be much the poorer. It was a fun album then, different enough to actually be considered a little sophisticated – in much the same way a certain demographic thinks of the Pete Tong Classical "crossover" albums as a little sophisticated – but now feels a little worn. Maybe it was commercial-breaked to death, tarnished by association with the neo-bourgeoisie. I'll be generous. A lot of its afterlife isn't directly its own fault.

Great album. Surprised to find it on this list, but I enjoyed it when it came out and I enjoyed it again now.

I wasn't previously familiar with Gotan Project although I had heard Santa Maria (Del Buen Ayre). It reminds me a lot of St Germain (Ludovic Navarre) who is also a French musician. Great album to put on in the background while working, cooking, hanging out...

Good production, but didn't really capture me. I do like this style when it's more upbeat and in your face but this was more like gypsy elevator music.

More interesting than enjoyable. There are some interesting sounds and solid beats to be found but I found myself losing interest quite often. I'd say it was a 2.5 for me, giving a 3 for at least being something new to my ears.

Hmmm... another Latin album. Three of the last five. This one is edgier to me. They want peace. And they'll going south. Chunga had her revenge... and I understood every single word of that song! Amazing me! Why would there be more lyrics on the album cover than in the actual songs? hmmm

Very enjoyable surprise. The pieces sounds simple and stripped down, though they have a very pronounced latin-flavor and layering, with a steady beat that drives them forward. Really enjoyed this offering.

Very funky and cool album, I kept thinking it was hispanic, but a few tracks starting showing those French roots of the accordion that I picture with films like Ratatouille. Listened while I was on a walk which was nice too. Very enjoyable album.

Here's a bit of a quirky one. Supposedly an electronic album, but it's got an undeniable South American flair to it, apparently they are going for Argentinian tango music. Without looking it up, I'm taking the title to maybe be "the revenge of Tango"? I definitely enjoyed a few songs on here, though some ran on for a bit too long. Not as focused or impactful as some of the Latin jazz-y albums we've had so far, but still a fun listen. Favorite tracks: Chunga's Revenge, Triptico, La del Ruso. Album art: A chest with the band name tattooed on. I mean technically there's a level of creativity to that, but it's really boring. 3.5/5

Nice mix of genres.

Enjoyable electronica. Nice and groovy. Slow builds that never get too big.

Interesting instruments. Sounds middle eastern, jazzy and electronic at the same time. Has some Indian themes as well. Definitely worth another listen.

Bog house music with a bog French twist. It annoys me that any non-Anglosphere music here has to have the idiot author's idea of an exotic flavour. It can't just be good rock music or something. So there are no Noir Desir or Die Toten Hosen albums, because unless there's a ridiculous "foreign overtone" Dimery doesn't want to know about it. After all, how could you list a foreign-language rock band when there are only a kazillion UK rock bands and we haven't gotten through all of them yet?! Anyway, this was too boring and too long. 2/5.

Favourite track(s): Chunga's revenge Somewhat hard to pick a favourite. All very danceble, none shining all too bright though. Over time, the tango-typical parts of the instrumentals become a bit tedious. But interesting to hear how a band would approach this genre of Electro Tango. It sounds as if Electro Swing was at least in part inspired by this kind of music. However, this is probably a chicken and egg situation.

Easy listening, last few songs aren't great as a different style

This album is slick. Hard to believe it's over 20 years old. It takes me to the bar at Hotel Costes and I’m sure Triptico was on one of CDs that bar’s DJ Stéphane Pompougnac released. I could listen to this stuff all night long.

Music for cafes and tapas bars. It was hard to go out in the last 20 years and not hear Epoca playing somewhere. The album is nicely done but there is an element of sameness to all the songs, though that would probably be true of any tango album.

Back in the late 90s and early naughts the Hotel Costes, Buddha Bar lounge music was all the rage and I bought a whack of these CDs. Gotan Project had a slightly different sound, with its Argentinian tango vibe. Someone aptly described it as Astor Piazzolla IDM Music. Unfortunately 20 yrs later it hasn’t aged well, sounding vapid and repetitive. This would be fine in a hotel bar or at a dinner party but I would want something more substantive myself. The cover of Zappa’s Chungas Revenge is also vastly inferior to the original as accordions and dance beats just don't capture the mood of Max Bennett’s bass lines and Zappa’s guitar.

It's an aight album, nothing special, has some good tunes. 4/5

This album was surprisingly fun to listen to, especially as background noise while I did work.

This music is more about taking your body on a journey than your mind. The beats make you shake your butt and the acoustic instruments keep your brain occupied just enough, allowing your butt to shake on it's own, without your dumb brain getting in the way. Literal dance music. But the kind for when you've had a glass or two of wine, rather than the kind for when you've had some pingers and you aint stopping.

Enjoyable listen. Great to have on in the background, but still interesting if you pay attention to it.

I could listen to these chilled out tunes all day. The first thing I did upon finishing the album was start it straight back up again. A perfect blend of paired down electronica and instruments, with a great French feeling to the whole thing.

Maybe not one of the greatest but I really enjoyed the vibe. Laid back, mainly instrumental, rhythmical and well produced. I'll be listening again.

I was starting to think there's something in the French water spurring interesting Spanish-language projects, but didn't sense its presence here. That's a shame, as the start was pretty strong, fading away into samey electronica.

I didn't mind this as sort of interesting background music, but it does seem an odd choice for this list. I think you could die without having heard it.
