Reviews (page 6 of 8)

i'm sure this is interesting to someone. i did not find it to be terribly compelling, but i think that's just a matter of personal taste.

Fun stuff

Very cool. Impressive blending of tango and electronica - the swing of the traditional influence is maintained even after all of the production. Worth a listen

An argot is not "Argo." "Argo" was a movie about the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis starring Ben Affleck. Pretty decent flick. Argo was the ship that Jason and the Argonauts built with help from the gods. Argot is neither of those things. It's a slang language used to prevent outsiders from understanding conversations. Y'know, like pig Latin. And actually, the argot from which the name "Gotan Project" derives - Lunfardo, an argot of Rioplatense Spanish (the dialect spoken in Argentina) - is a lot like pig Latin. Tango, with beats and breaks and jazz elements, from a Paris trio with Argentine, French, and Swiss members? Well that sounds interesting. And the style is interesting... for a little while. Then it all blends into the background and feels little same-y. When the Argentinian tango sound is most prevalent is when Gotan Project are at their best. Otherwise it's usually just pretty generic late 90s/early 00s electronica. Reminds me of Portishead, just not nearly as good. But of course, is anyone? Again, when the tango is the driving force in songs, it's better. Iyay ivegay ityay eethray arsstay. Ecentday inyay ethay ackgroundbay.

A chill beat with a spicy flavor. Would listen again.

Interesting. Might check out more once in a while

This is so close to something great, but it falls short. There is a spark of something really interesting here, but it flies a little too close to background music. Still, not unpleasant. Just... not living up to its full potential. This is music for people who hear something like Budos Band or Dub Trio and think, "this would be great if it was toned down even further."

A big surprise it started great, but then slowly got dull for my taste. It’s definitely worth a second listen though. And I will do that.

Downtempo. French,, kinda cool. Added a track or 2 to my Downtempo playlist. 3/5.

Ok…. But fell somewhere between proper chill out and dancey

I enjoyed it, and could easily listen to it again. Overall I mostly think it was nice as background music, which isn't to say it was bad (in fact I'm often looking for nice music for during work!). I could see myself play this during a dinner party.

Good album that I will keep mind of when I need background or study music, the songs are all quite similar though so I would get bored listening to it in other circumstances. Personally I wouldn't say it is a must listen album. Favourite song: Chunga's revenge

Instrumental tango remix. Good

It's not bad. But it does verge on the corny for me, as it ALMOST reminds me of electro swing which I find to be the most reprehensible form of music ever conceived. I think French music in general I've never really grasped or fully appreciated (except for maybe Satie) and probably due to my own ignorance, the type of music being referenced here as the basis just kind of goes over my head and comes off as a little kitsch. I can hear some Portishead at a superficial level as well which is probably the frame of reference that allows me to at least have some appreciation for it.

decent to run to. Probably better to dance to. Like the accordion. The songs with vocals were more enjoyable.

Pretty funky, not sure it's my kinda thing, I can see the appeal. Sorta jazzy but I think I'd rather listen to jazz, ya know.

OK, sounds very early 2000s ibiza lounge bar-ey

This isn’t my style of music but I didn’t hate it. Good for background music, but nothing in particular stood out to me.

Enjoyable instrumentals throughout. However, tracks are same-y. Good background music

A solid 3. Agree it's good background music, peppy enough to get a good flow going.

Not bad, and makes for nice background music, but ultimately feels very same-y throughout, with most songs not feeling like they build up to much

Pretty average.

A fine album but again nothing too note worthy. Would not search it out but would be fine if it came on at like a restaurant or something

Hey, that song is on an advert

I'm sure I've heard most of this on ads and home improvement shows. If I ever open a beach bar somewhere I know what to play

Mild. Cool genre, good background. Sounds like copyright-free music.

Early on the album surprised me and found a delightful european cafe and background instrumental groove that I really enjoyed while working. I was lening 4, but later on it became repetitive and I have to cut down to 3.

Electrotango & chill.

Fun and kind of sexy. Annoyed it didn't actually feature the Come Dine With Me theme tune, but the Finish Advert music will have to do I guess

Prima achtergrond. Beetje tango met beats

Liked first few songs, but not later ones. The ones that were what seems for me classical tango were good.

Some good some Eh

Not bad but the Come Dine With Me thing just made the whole thing sound like a backing track or theme tune. What a sad little life.

Good background music

The album reminded me of instrumental music you would hear in a restaurant. This is not to say I didn’t enjoy it but it was too long clocking in at just under 90 minutes. I really need to read the book to see why this made the list.

Easy listening

Ehhh...not sure this should be on the list anymore. It seems very dated by today's standards. But I'm sure it was groundbreaking in its day. Nothing I really would search out to listen to in its entirety again, but some individual tracks are decent.

very cool....Astor Piazzolla IDM

In the 2000s, before hipsters were called hipsters and before beer had craft in front of it and adjuncts, like grapefruit and yuzu, were a thing, Gotan Project were the band hipsters and people who like adjuncts in the their craft IPA listened to to show they were a cut above the riff raff. Of course, there were also several adverts that Época featured in as well to take the music to the philistinic masses. I was bored listening to this. Every song effectively is the same, with the annoying instrument that belongs in sea shanties. It’s music that Dom Jolly didn’t use in Trigger Happy TV because it was too dull (side note: he clearly thought Grandaddy was less dull).

I mean it was chill but boring enough for me to not finish it.

Groovy. Started on a high note and didn't totally maintain it but fun stuff regardless.

877. 2001. 2 stars. Tedious and meandering background music for Spanish hipster bars. Interesting for the first couple of tracks, then evaporates into bland nothingness. And no-one needs multiple 5+ minute tracks, including several 8+ minute abominations.

This album is nearly an hour long, and it really drags. It does have its moments, but not enough.

Rating: 5/10 Meh. I don't want to do tango for an hour straight. French electronic with a fusion of the mellowed out trip hop sound you would expect from its release date. Gave it a chill background vibe. Perhaps notable here for the inclusion of a highlight of a distinct genre, which I can respect more than the 100th addition in a US/UK genre we've all heard before or yet another album by the same usual bands. Favorite song was Santa Maria, I guess? Pretty sick there's a song called Chunga's Revenge that's awesome

Kind of a off rhythm Spanish album. It's like a Spanish Tycho.

This kind of thing really just does not do it for me

I don't really get this. The language barrier is obvious for me, but I don't see what it is about this music that supposedly makes it essential to hear before I die. There's not really anything WRONG with this. It just sounds like elevator music and I guess I need to read the book to find out why I needed to hear this before I die.

Not for me

This is movie soundtrack at best. 12 monkeys comes to mind, but that was more interesting.

Look I'm so happy for everyone who heard something from this but to me it was just more white noise 😭

No idea what this is. It seems to be late 90s/early 2000s electronica background music. Second song has a Latin flair and is a surprise banger of a song. I guess I’ll see how the rest of the album goes. There’s a real jazzy energy to some of this. Triptico is a straight modern dance jazz fusion song. Some of this is interesting and good. I think my favorite sound is on the songs with the French woman singing. Overall, a lot of it keeps your interest, but definitely more in the background kind of way. Might be hard to focus on as much on these songs solely. And the album is way too long. Some songs seem to drag on a little. This didn’t do enough to get a 3, so right now I’m at a 2, but an interesting 2. It just drags on in places and sometimes feels repetitive after some variety early in the album.

For real? It's alright, but it's such a weird gimmick to have tango music behind electronics. I guess they didn't think it was just a gimmick because it never stopped

They gussied up hold music in the first half, dove into a Disney movie action scene, then took us to a back room prohibition era establishment known for their lack of ventilation and excellent cheese platters.

Music for a Lawrence Welk-themed disco/tapas bar? Interesting in spots, but overall too samey-same to really hold my attention over the length of the album.

Interesting mix of genres, had fun listening to it.

The Frenchness is a bit much for me.

If one of my friends told me this was an album I needed to hear before I died and I rushed out and bought it, I would be very disappointed and need to have a long talk with said friend. Pretty standard hotel elevator/lobby/bar fare. Bland and inoffensive.

It’s a mood. Very nostalgic and can hear the musicianship but not for me. Reminds me of music my uncle liked at a particular time in his life.

Tango gentrification, sad. Fascism sampled, icky.

Honestly, this was a little too repetitive for me. Almost to the point where it irked me.

Spanish electronic music. Okay.

Pleasant enough, but not really my thing.

Not a bad album, but I don't like it that much for a 3/5.

Tämä oli tälläistä letkeää sunnuntai-aamun chiliä muzakkia. Ihan ok, mutta eipä jäänyt mitään konkreettista tästä käteen.

I’m sure this is for someone, and I’m sure that “someone” finds this album to be magnificent, but this, for me, falls into the category of “nice, but that’s about it”.

did not need to be 90 minutes, would have settled for 20

An enjoyable album with music that would fit in movies from the 80s or 90s is the impression I got as a whole. Its not everyday listening music or even something I would have on in the background. It creates a feeling and emotions in a great way but if I'm not somewhere and doing something that fits the feeling the album creates its just out of place.

This is what people who have heard like 3 songs in their life think people with high brow tastes listen to

I don't like this type of approach to genres I like

I think I was just on hold for an hour with my internet service provider. In all seriousness, it was not awful by any means, and is fine as background music. But does anyone sit and listen and engage with music like this? You can’t even really dance to it. Basically, I don’t think this was necessary to listen to before I die.

Not my cup of tea. It feels incredibly dated. The mid-90s and the early 2000s had many combinations of "Let's take some world music elements and make them modern and coooool", whether as singles or even albums. Most of them sucked. This one? It's tolerable, but if I think too long and hard about this kind of music I like it less and less...

There is nothing displeasing about music like this, but something about it just turns me off. Maybe it just reminds me of hiphop I used to listen to (Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique). There's the dubby feel with the delay throws and jamming on one chord for a long time, and while some dub is very sick this just doesn't do it for me. Luckily it fades into the background pretty easily so it wasn't a particularly bad listen.

gran turismo menu ass music. I don’t hate it! it’s campy in a way I love all early 000s music though.

This one didn’t work for me. Very boring. 2 stars because it’s not egregious, just completely uninteresting to me

great latin vibe for a dance club, but not an album for me

I wanted to like this more, but it became tedious very quickly. This is one of those albums where I think of you cut 30 seconds to a minute off each song it would be so much better. Nothing is necessarily bad, but near the end I couldn’t wait for this to be over.

catchy but basic

Started good, then I couldn't understand anything and lost a lot of interest.

2/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/gotan-project/la-revancha-del-tango/ Absolutely not for me. I can appreciate some of the ideas Gotan Project tries on this, but at the same time I can’t really stand it. Granted, I really don’t care for tango, so that doesn’t help. The good thing it had going for it is that I listened to it in the background on a sunny day. O, yea, also too long, yet again. Why are so many albums so long?

Just fancy backround jingles

Tango. It's good for in the background, not bad, not my style.

It's French. I recognise that one tune off the adverts, but they all sound the same anyway.

i did not love it. sounds like someone trying to score an ironic indie movie with pre-set beats of a casio keyboard

Kinda cool? Probably don’t need to listen to this.

Didn't hate it, but totally not an essential listen.

FINISH - THE DIAMOND STANDARD

Cool and chill, seems like good backround music for establishments. Dragged out and repetitive in a good way

Some cool beats?

its weird, but I'd be hard pressed to call it bad? It made decent focus music during work today. 2 stars

Perfectly pleasant background music

pas mon truc

Really not sure how this made the list. Extra star for the cricket call and response song. That was cool.

I felt like I was going to like it at the start but it became too long and too much of the same.

Sometimes fun, always pleasant background music, but nothing that blew me away or made me feel that I needed to hear it

They managed to turn a Frank Zappa song into boring elevator music. I'm almost impressed.

It's OK. Not sure it belongs on this list as it's just medium quality jazzy electronica. Did they break ground? First to do this? I don't think so. It's a fine background music. Doesn't need or encourage active listening. It's fine. It's about a 2.4, but I'm not feeling particularly moved to round up tonight. Call it a 2 and never hear it again.

Confuso.

Nor for me

This is the 12 Monkeys score. Electronica meets Tango...the fusion literally no one was asking for. RJD2 was probably asking for it. Epoca was the working music for the Mad Men title card sequence. Honestly, it sounds like prestige TV music but Epoca is a catchy song. Weird Spanish shoutout to Thievery Corporation. This is the background music at a bar I can't afford to drink at. This is not a terrible listen as background music. Actively listening, it's a little tedious and repetitive. It's a long album with little to differentiate most of the songs from one another to the untrained ear.

I'm zoning out a lot, woof. 2.

This is the music you would put on while being on hold, in a lift while holding a dinner party. Best Tracks: Queremos Paz; Chunga's Revenge; La Del Ruso

Nice to have in the background. Some stand outs but didn't grip me from front to back.

Having an accordion with a dance track beat is almost enough to give this weird choice an extra star. Almost.

Lite enformigt.

Great if you want something chill, but not for me.

I was on board for the first song or two, and then it became monotonous.

Why is this 90 minute generic Latin dance album on this list? 2/5

Inoffensive, largely dull, elevator music. Remotely pleasant in a few places but just Muzak really.

Not much to this music, maybe suited to the background.

This album had some moments and had some other moments. Something I could put on while working/studying but wouldn't put it on for any other reason. I was ready for it to be over by the end.

The accordion does not belong in trip hop. Lose that and this could have been passable. Stupid, lousy accordion.

Feels a bit dated in 2026. It was a thing in the late 90s/2000s to take someone else's music and put a beat behind. I'm sure I'm oversimplifying it.

This was alright, I didn't find it memorable, it was generic sounding.

Just mildly boring for the most part, without being offensive. The vaguely uptempo stuff sounds like the sort of music you'd hear in a hotel lounge, whilst the rest is as though you're watching TV and the next advert unhurriedly pans to a clip of a Yorkshire pudding being doused in only the finest juices, whilst a soft voice caresses "this is not just food, this is M&S food". In fact, I'm sure I have heard one of these tracks on an advert from 15 or so years ago (I'd like to say). *turns to Google for pointers* FINISH DIAMOND STANDARD!

Enjoyable! Sitting down and listening to it as one full sitting is very good, put together well. They fuse the tango, jazz and electric funk very well together. Una Música Brutal is my pick of the songs! Iv not heard much music like this, but definitely worth the listen. Now there is nothing that is totally amazing, but an easy, enjoyable listen.

Chill but interesting.

Music for a cool coffee shop but it's too cool for me

The first album I had never heard of the artist before. Decent vibes but not memorable for me, I'm too far removed from the genre.

Tango music, except it's electronic now. Not bad but also not memorable.

few ok, but bad in general, not gonna listen again

This started off quite pleasant and then it went on and on and on. Lacking in the drama and passion that is integral to the tango. This project gets a D from me, must try harder

Bleh 1001 albums I could have done without but are ok. Two

im so sorry amigo 2/5

Pleasant background music but that’s the only time I’d listen to it — in the background. Also too long

After 150 some albums, I feel I can now judge an album by its cover. More of the same horseshit early 2000’s electronics that permeates this list.

On the whole I found this a little bland, although I did like "La Del Ruso".

If someone came up to me and said "I am making a movie slated to be released in 2001 and there is a 1 hour heist planning montage that takes place in South American locales but I just can't find the right music to use for it", I would recommend this album. I don't know if I needed to hear it before I died, I've heard something like it anyway but I'm not sure if it was Gotan Project or just some creative commons filler muzac

Favorite Song: Queremos Paz Least Favorite Song: Triptico Two foreign albums in a row might not have been the final straw but it’s one of the latter straws.

El revanche della muzak

2 out of 5. Not bad for party music and one song stuck out.

this reminds me so much of the Madagascar movie ( Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted ) and all I was thinking about was the evil woman from that movie and picturing her singing

90 minutes of accordian tango trance music. Sorry, this is not my jam, but the accordion playing is really good.

sounds like the sort of music you listen to at a very expensive tapas restaurant where the bill is fucking robbery. It’s not bad in terms of production and playing, very well mixed, smooth, deffo tango made ambient electronic background noise. Not my thing. Fairly obnoxious and seems very pretentious. Gives me the ick as they say. Jazz brunch becomes jazz small plates.

Generic music found at your local fancy cocktail bar. Barely passes the corporate music hellscape threshold, since it has some memorable hooks. Not something I would want to listen to for longer period of time. I guess for a bartender, it’s better than corpo-music. Just felt like some soul-less jazz. 2 stars.

eh, okay

This is #day487 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… what looked like a promising endeavor, judging by the description, turned out to be a pretty dull experience. This is far from a must-hear before you die. So background-ish that you end up blending into it. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day488.

För mkt 2001 för mina små öron

Nah. That was uneventful

An album purely for ambiance. The sound is evocative of some portuguese bands like Madredeus. However, it’s too bland, it could almost be considered drone, even if it is proficiently made.

Feel like I could maybe get into this in the right circumstances, but it wasn't hitting for me the day I got it. Not bad, but it didn't do much for me

Chill vibe

Maybe it’s all those Piergoi Festivals or maybe it’s just the Weird Al fan in me, but I’m a sucker for a little splash of accordion 🪗 2.5⭐️

music good lyrics meh

The songs are blending together at this point and it’s cohesive which is cool but not something I would come back to again, really not my vibe but I like the sounds and the beats. Overall good album but I don’t think I’ll come back to it

Solid but somewhat repetitive for me. Also that accordion (?) made me think of overcooked lol so couldn’t take it too serious.

This is pretty boring. It’s fine for background music, but I can’t really imagine another context.

I'm sure this is someone's cup of tea but it isn't mine. It sounds like songs I would skip on Fifa street. I can appreciate it but it does nothing for me I'm afraid. Best Track: Epoca, because it reminds me of Come dine with me.

Somebody said DVD menu music. Yep. That's it. It's not bad, it just goes nowhere.

Kaffehausmusik.

Unfortunately not my thing at all. I’m sure it’s good but it is already a genre I dont vibe with at all and it is not in English which is ok but ultimately makes it harder for me to attach w if musically nothing I like is going on. Cool they did a Zappa cover

When this album appeared in 2001, it hit the zeitgeist with unnerving precision. The crowd that had once spent the late eighties and early nineties in a chemically enhanced blur on the dancefloor had, by then, acquired mortgages, toddlers, and a deep yearning for sophistication. Lounge music — that gentle collision of house beats and tasteful melancholy — was the perfect solution. You could feel worldly and hip again, just without the pills, the sweat, or the 4 a.m. regret. This record became their soundtrack. It replaced Buena Vista Social Club as the go-to background for semi-upscale restaurants where you could just about hear yourself say “we really should do this more often.” For a while, it felt as though every restaurant in Europe owned precisely one CD — and this was it. The idea, to be fair, is ingenious: take danceable beats and drape them in tango. Instant atmosphere. But as actual music, rather than mood lighting, it wilts fast. On headphones it becomes fifty-seven minutes of politely hypnotic repetition — the sort of music that makes you wonder whether you’re supposed to tip the percussionist for persistence alone. And the execution doesn’t help. The bandoneon player sounds permanently on the verge of panic, the percussionist seems intent on starting a small regional conflict, and the singer — who faintly resembles Dani Klein of Vaya Con Dios — manages to drain all the sultriness from the room. There are flashes of what might have been: “Tríptico” almost works, and the cover of Last Tango in Paris finally delivers a sliver of genuine drama. But most of it remains the sonic equivalent of mood lighting — pleasant, repetitive, and ultimately disposable. Still, it’s a perfect time capsule. You can almost picture the scene: the couple out for their long-overdue dinner, the waiter reciting the specials, and this music softly purring in the background — a soundtrack for people who once danced until dawn and now just want to make it to dessert.

Trippy kind of mysterious funk that highlights all sorts of instruments and sounds. Very few lyrics, mostly operatic sounding and non-english. 2/10

Not awful, but won’t listen again.

I remember liking it at the time

Didn't land in any way

Alexa play Vivaldi trap remix

That was really boring

I mean, don’t get me wrong it’s pretty nice instrumental hip hop mainly. But top 1001 albums? Nah. Gimme some Apollo Brown if you wanna go down that road.

Never heard of this, but still disappointed: - 20+ albums in and this is the first one of this century, and - i loved the idea of these styles fusion biut - way too repetitive and - so many tango type instruments that can provide such deep emotions but ybfirtunately sound quite hollow here

God baggrundsmusik, ikke særlig essentielt men måske ret repræsentativt for meget vagt-etnisk elektronisk musik i start-00erne.

🤷‍♂️

Deberían haber sido The Lorefolk Project (?).

It's fine for background music, nothing else 4.5/10 2 Stars

IF AI took a stab at trying to create Tito Puente as an employee of Radio Shack. Love the latin flavor of this, but at the end of the day it feels more like a "project" that only reminds me of how much I dislike electronica.

“Epoca” was memorable for its upright meditative beat. “Triptico” was nice for how it makes a point where the pacing of the album picked up a lot - which was much needed. I also liked the bass & drum patterns in “Santa Maria”. It had a great groove pocket. But everything else was so similar that it became hard to remember which song I stopped listening to and which song I started listening to. I really appreciate this project for providing a sound closer to something that actually piqued my interest at first, but it does absolutely nothing with that sound. Firm 2/5, good to put on as background music but not any better than a good ambient, lofi, or house album

dynamic music pressed into neatly trimmed sheets of downtempo. technically sound and evocative of Argentine cosmopolitanism, but ultimately not very interesting or emotive. it's okay. deserves to be one of the 1001? this one strikes me as a representation of the entire genre of modern tango rather than an album to listen to in its own right. i feel like it was chosen not because it's particularly significant to electrotango, but because the authors felt that everyone should be familiar with the style and this was easily accessible to a British audience. this not only flattens rich musical lineages into a few token picks, but means that what is chosen becomes the face of the style to everyone but the nerds that care enough to look deeper. so tldr: probably not because i don't think this is a particularly significant example of electrotango. but i could be wrong. if i am, fuck.

Gotta say this was a weird choice.

I get it - start a relentless rhythm/beat and then improvise over it. Any one of these songs on its own wouldn't be too bad but they became pretty tedious very quickly as a whole on the album. Those songs with vocals were welcomed. 2.5/5

Perfect background music for a French bistro. Nice to listen to but inconsequential.

Music to shop to.

Okay album. French Jazz I guess. I can imagine this playing in the background while Dr. Fauchard, my dentist, was performing a root canal.

It's like so bland. The only reason I give it 2 stars: a) it's not annoying when playing in background b) there's Frank Zappa cover here (althought I'd prefer more Zappa albums in list)

Pretty solid background music.. if such a thing even exists. I’m not sure it really needs to be on a list. The cover of Zappa’s Chunga’s Revenge is interesting, I’m not sure I actually like it, but I’ll give them credit for taking it on.

I like the rhythm and the music but overall a pretty forgettable experience.

Just faded into the back ground for me.

I forgot this was on

Meh, I don't really understand what this is doing here.

Not sure who wronged the tango in the first place and really don't care.

Interesting but not for me

Music for ads, a bit dull. 2.4

Another day, another album of mostly instrumentals in a language I am too ignorant to understand. I still wonder why it is the electronica/techno/instrumental albums have to be so dang long? I am not saying these artists have to be the Ramones and sing 2-minute songs, but does every track have to be 5+minutes? I am trying to determine why La Revancha Del Tango needs to be in this book. What am I listening to that is so notable that I shall not pass from this mortal coil prior to listening to all 10 tracks and 58 minutes(!) of this album? After two listens, I'm afraid I still not sufficiently answer that question.

So boring. Added 1 star for anyone who wants to tango.

It felt like Everything But the Girl meets tango. I guess not bad but also not my thing. And I found myself reaching for the skip button towards the end of the album so...

It’s good background music.

It’s alright. Kinda boring though which is sad cause you’d think tango should be more interesting.

Meh. This felt creative in a jazzy way, but jazz has never totally worked for me. This is probably good. 2.4

Its library music for and advertising company. I am now certain that Dimery had not heard 1001 albums when he wrote this book.

not my thing

This is pleasant enough as background music. It sounds like it could just play on a loop in a boutique clothing store in the early 00s. Honestly, I'm not sure how this is on the list, but it was... indeed a thing I listened to once, and will likely never again.

wow this felt long. obviously super cool to have a zappa cover in your album but man i was sick of this like 15 minutes in. just nothing that cool going on ever

When I saw the cover I was expecting a misogynistic hip hop album. This isn't that at all, but I'm not sure it's whole lot better. Really adding an exotic touch to elevator music.

It’s like battle block theatre background music It actually might be lol

Listened in the truck via YouTube music. Not sure why this is on this list. It’s mood music for accordion lovers. Like Eastern European Thievery Corporation. Not horrible, just not something that would interest me again unless I was throwing a Greek themed dinner party and wanted a chill vibe.

Definitely not my vibe. Sounded like something I’d hear in a dance class

Seems good as far as Tango goes. Probably not something I’d choose to listen to, though.

This makes me feel like I’m getting a haircut at a salon with minimalist decor and an aromatherapy diffuser. Why does that album cover look so crappy? That “tattoo” looks like WordArt.

It was fine? Pleasant even. It's a neat mix of dance beats, french music, tango and electronica? It was nice while it was on, but I have no memory of any track. It really blurred together into a pleasant blob. At one point I was worried that the album had started over again, but i was on the last song. It was a surprisingly long album of music that sort of sounded all the same. I didn't hate it? It has elevator Muzak energy. But elevated Muzak... so elevator music*? I dunno. 2.5 maybe? I forget.

Looks like a soundtrack for a boring novela

Well I didn’t know that I didn’t like tango until now. It’s interesting I guess but then they keep getting the damn awful accordion out. I’m also unimpressed at the track that had me keep on pausing it to see what my dog was barking about. Only to discover she wasn’t barking at all. Not funny or clever.

# Album Name: La Revancha Del Tango # Artist: Gotan Project # Rating: # Comments: Honestly, not my thing for 60 mins. Way too long for this style of elevator music. Theres a couple of decent tracks - epoca, Santa Maria. I would have given this a 3 because its just OK. But due to the length its getting a 2. Just way too long man. # Top Tunes: Epoca # Would I listen to it again? No

This might be the worst album cover of the 1000, but the music was better than my very low expectations. Decent background music, some of these tracks could be used to make some pretty cool hip hop beats.

Interesting background music Standout songs: Triptico Last Tango in Paris

This is OK but it wears a bit thin. It's not atmospheric enough to be great background music, and doesn't really have the grooves and melodies to be something I actively nod along with. Not bad but it's an album that just... happens

I have the faintest memories of encountering this album, or at least Gotan, sometime in my early 20s maybe, when I would still hang out with folks who didn’t all have a shared musical vocabulary. Or to put it more specifically: with people who weren’t Music Fans. I occasionally envy these folks or at least whatever image I have constructed of them. It’s me and art museums: sure, I like some paintings, even love a few, but I could only pick out a Degas from a Manet or an early Picasso sketch from a Dali if I really tried and it’d probably be a coin toss. A life where you maybe have a few playlists saved or in the old days, a CD wallet with 12 out of 20 slots filled, largely going unlistened. La Revancha del Tango surely makes up a healthy minority of these collections.

I guess it was fine, made for decent background music at first but it felt a little repetitive to me. I admit the language barrier keeps me from really being able to speak to the lyrics but even sonically it just didn’t do much for me.

This is all pretty decent music. First impression was that it all sounded like "James Bond Background Music" - Slightly jazzy, modern, a little exotic.

Primo brano strumentale gasicchia. Carina(?) Capitalismo Foraneo: boh…

I don't know the Spanish word for "boring" but I bet the members of Gotan Project do.

Eh easy play through, not for me.

So refined it’s boring. Sounds like it was made to be sampled or as a background to porn, depending upon which movement you’re forced upon. 1.5 for not loathing it.

Less offensive than lots of other electronica. I still feel like I fell asleep and woke up to the DVD menu repeating forever. This isn’t something I’d listen to and analyze and it doesn’t make me feel anything other than anxious for it to end.

I won't be saving this, and it's unlikely I'll revisit, but I really didn't have a bad time with this, if i was able to give a 2.5 I would, but based on my criteria of 3's being albums I've saved, I think this will have to be a harsh 2.

This was decent - I found it somewhat forgettable at parts but consistently pleasant and never disliked it

2 - repetitive electronica although the second to last song was pretty interesting

This sounds like something I would hear at a cocktail party (which I would never go to) or in a trendy jazzy restaurant (which I would never go to) so not for me (not for me).

Yeah it was ok got a bit samey

4/10 It sits in the background and rumbles along in its inoffensive way. It's well produced, but an hour? Oof, it was a bit of a slog. I don't begrudge this album being on the list, assuming it represents a high mark in Euro-electronic reinterpretations of Tango music. I would question how they have managed to take the soul out of something meant to be so raw. It does nothing for me - most of it feels like it could be on a Brittany Ferries infomercial

I dunno about this. 2 Stars

It wasn't my sort of music, didn't finish album

Waste of a spot on the list. Literally elevator music.

Super torn between 2 and 3 here, i love the opener, lyric songs i hate tho cause foreign

I kept waiting for the songs to morph into something more but that rarely happened.

Fine background music, hilarious to think of this as something someone believes to be of extreme cultural significance

It had some good tunes but overall felt at times pretty lengthy and forgettable. Still some nice catchy sunny tunes that will fit in the summer. (2.5/5.0)

Album 742 of 1001 Gotan Project - La Revancha Del Tango (2001) Rating : 1.5 / 5 More Electronica background music. Felt like i was on hold after calling some modern, tech-forward company.

These are some looong songs. I can imagine some of them as part of a movie soundtrack. Not my fave, but definitely different to a lot of other stuff I’ve heard.

Felt like I was on hold and they never picked up the phone. Waiting room music.

Interesting, but has an elevator music feel to it, and not in a good way.

Weather channel music. Not bad for background noise but electronica does nothing for me.

2.5 - Meh

This was an album. Not bad

Nothing that really blew me away. Pretty chilled out music that would be good to have on in the background. It's not really something that I would focus on.

Bland Cafe music, not bad but why would anyone bother is beyond me 2*

I was expecting good stuff from this one. I love tango. I'm afraid so far it's not offering much. Very slik lounge music. Good sound and texture, but not much more. So far track 8 is my favorite. It's ok, but don't see myself going back

More like the got an earache project!!!! Jk it’s not bad but it isn’t very interesting either

Sounded like I was shopping in one of those boutiques downtown that charges $200 for a blouse. But seriously I just can't get down with repetitive music like this. Each track is interesting for the first minute or so. By minute 5 I'm losing my mind. Fav track was Epoca.

I had not previously heard of the artist or album. This is kind of electronic, almost ambient. It might be pretty good background music actually. That said, this isn't my kind of music or something I see myself seeking out again.

I enjoyed the worldly influence and overall chill atmosphere this soundtrack creates. And maybe its cutting edge for its time. However, I don't really see how this is a must listen before you die. Its okay at best.

It’s fine - I can use it as background music, but I would not necessarily put this on freely anytime soon though

A bit weird to listen without context. Maybe it works better as a background

A sort of Latino-hippie Chinese Man, but way worse and more boring. Vote 3.5/10

Cool at first but got boring really fast.

If you love lots of accordion this is your album!

The mix of electronica and tango is definitely novel and interesting. I think it doesn't really do enough to justify it's runtime though and I got a bit bored by the end.

The weather channel used to just give you the local forecast on loop like every 10 minutes and this is what I recall the music sounding like.

Boring

Pleasant throughout but also not very captivating

Pretty boring and not a lot of excitement

Tango-infused French Electronica. It's so pleasant to the ear I wonder if it means I've gotten old? Bores me after a while, I guess I'm still young enough!

definitely a lot less 'electronic' sounding than most electronic music i've ever heard and an interesting spin on the formula that is very tango-forward. that being said, i was a bit bored out of my mind with the repetitive nature of most of these tracks, even with the added bonus of jazz improvisation over it. just not my thing, really.

This is quite the bore.

A bizarre entry into electronica that has moments of bliss but lacked the staying power.

Interesting - yes Should anyone need to listen to this before they die - no

4,5/10 Highlights: -

Meh. Not interesting. Felt like I was in a boring European spy film that was trying too hard to be sexy. It was not sexy.

This was a bit sleepy

Background music for me

very different. liked the first few songs (about the first 2 or 4 songs) but then everything else started to sound the same so that's why i'm rating it a low number...

It's like slightly more interesting elevator music.

The whole album feels like what a vampire would play if they opened a gastropub.

Not for me honestly. I found this really grating and repetitive. I like tango and I can like some of the trip hop aspects of it... it just becomes pretty tedious after a while. The singing and speaking is what I found most obnoxious.

Maybe the best dumb electro-ish album on this list. Still pretty dull.

I often hear musicians say that they have drawn a lot of influence from the Gotan Project. (not) This album felt like shopping for clothes I can't afford.

Just not my bag.

After a while all these trip hop albums start to blend together as forgettably long mush. This at least had a Latin flavor to it. Still not my thing, not as bad as others.

Wasn’t bad to listen to while I was doing other stuff, but when I wasn’t it was pretty boring. High 2.

4/10 - I do not really remember it. It was alright. The songs all flowed together and I do not plan on returning to it.

This would make a great liveshow. Regarding the album... Usable as background music for a hangout or something. Not sure how I feel about this (I don't like the accordion or whatever that is). Anyway, it's an interesting fusion. I can't give this a three, sorry.

This is the kind of repetitive, impossibly hip music that I hear in pretentious clothing stores or trendy cocktail bars. Not for me, but ok for background music I guess.

Not bad, but not really my kind of music. I recognised Época from some TV ads. I like that they covered Zappa, but the original Chunga's Revenge instantly transports you in a way that's difficult for another band to reproduce.

Favorite Track: Una Música Brutal

Had been wondering if this list was entirely Anglo (having forgotten about Ravi Shankar) when this turns up in Spanish by a French band. Unfortunately I found it really boring.

Music is good but the execution is cringe.

Not my favorite

Interesting and different... top 1000 album... not sure.. nice background music.

New album from an group that I missed at the time. Too much of that '97-'02 lounge vibe for me, but I can appreciate some of the songs and their choice of covers.

Listened to this while playing Return to Dark Tower solo. I lost. This wasn't a bad album...but it absolutely should not be included on this list. Replace this with the soundtrack to Waking Life, and you'd have something similar, but with more excitement.

Excellent chill study music. Primo vibes.

++: Tríptico, La del Ruso +: Queremos Paz, Época, Santa María (del Buen Ayre), Una Música Brutal, Last Tango in Paris, Vuelvo al Sur +-: Chunga's Revenge, El Capitalismo Foráneo 5,8/10
