Reviews (page 11 of 14)

Why choose adversity when you can be white in the 70s?

I hear a lot of Beatles in this, especially Paul's influence. I find the most popular tracks on this (Coconut Song, Into The Fire, and Without You) the most annoying. He really started out well with the first two track though.

3 bangers! Gotta Get Up, Coconut and Without You (I thought that was a Manilow song). The rest was fine.

Gotta get up is a good song. Only listened to the first couple.

Surprising number of huge hits on this. Really enjoyed it, but nothing too outstanding. Somewhere around a 3 and a 3.5.

Did not know who this man was before today. But now I have a name to go with some very classic songs.

wide ranging and very creative - subtle and yet pronounced at the same time. I like it.

There’s a tremendous amount of artistry here, and his voice is extraordinary, and used so interestingly. At its best (“Jump Into the Fire”), it’s soulful, intelligent, Beatlesesque mastery; at its worst (yep, both “Without You” and “Coconut”), it’s some corny novelty nonsense. This is the fine line of eclectic pop.

Couple of good songs, not the biggest fan overall

Hold up this is so fucking Beatles coded. I’ll admit this is one I wasn’t particularly looking forward to, as I want super familiar with Nilsson’s stuff. But this gives heavy Sgt peppers and early 70’s solo Beatles vibes. Tapers off on side two otherwise this would be an easy 4 for me. It’s a great 3.5. I’m sure it will only get higher the more I revisit

Knew none of Nilssons music apart from Without You. Glad to have found this, a bit before my time but I've enjoyed listening to it Early in the Morning and Driving Along were the highlights for me, not sure what he was smoking when he recorded Coconut but whatever it was I wouldn't mind some

I hadn't heard of this artist but I knew the song without you.

70/100 Favourite Song: Without You

Wasn’t super engaging to me. 3.0

I liked this album I would give a 3.5

I didn’t realize how many songs I know were by Harry Nilsson. Good for a listen once but won’t again.

Album shmalbum Very strange album. Some absolute bangers I never knew were this guy, surrounded by some absolute crap

Been on the 'should listen to that' list forever, decades. Now I've been forced to, I'm underwhelmed. The big ballad actually felt better when Badfinger did it, Coconut loses out on the Tarantino context, but Into the Fire is a beast even without the helicopters. The rest of the album feels like indulgent filler in a time when McCartney and Floyd and others were dripping with full coverage of both sides

Whimsical pop, recognized "Coconut"

this album was really just ight. ive been listening to a lot in this genre recently. light 3 top 1 the moonbeam song 2 gotta get up 3 without you

Chill, pretty nice, maybe I would listen again

He never really worked for me back in the day and that hasn't changed.

Interesting, not what i’d usually listen to. Some very funky songs which i really enjoyed, a few famous songs that i never knew who sung them.

Very croon-y Some song sound relatively modern sounding (in a Beatles-y way) Other songs are straight honky tonk

Un álbum conciso, repleto de buenas canciones, sin muchas pretenciones. Además contiene una de las canciones románticas más icónicas de la historia de la música pop.

So many hits on thos thing!

A strange blend of straight forward powerful ballads, sort of kitschy-novelty songs, and almost experimental Pet-Sounds type stuff. It has a Beatles-y sound to some of the songs and I also get a Kenny Loggins vibe on occassion. Seems like he should have been more famous. 3.7

I knew of “without you” before listening and I was surprised that this album is a lot more up beat than I expected. I liked it. I recognized a lot of these songs but thought they were from other artists.

It alrigt fucking schmilsson 💂🏼🥾

Glad I found this.

Best Song: Coconut. Just a beautiful trainwreck of a song. What possessed him to put on that weird vocal affectation? Who prescribed him this medicine? How many limes did he put with the coconuts and drink them all up before performing this song? Worst Song: Without You. How is this overwrought ballad the most popular track on this album? Overall: From the album title to its artwork, Ol' Harry Nilsson seems to have a heavy dose of self confidence. The result is an album that's fun while it's here, but largely forgettable.

This album was ok. It was definitely a "pop" album of the time, where it sounds engineered to make hits rather than express an artistic concept. Not amazing, not horrible. Solid 2.5/5 -> 3/5.

Good music.

Feels a bit disjointed. Going from without you to coconut is quite the transition. I was impressed by the drums on jump into the fire prompting me to read up on the drummer. Apparently the guy suffered from schizophrenia and murdered his mother.

That Coconut song is dumb as hell, but there's some decent stuff here.

Can describe it in two words (not perjoritively!) - easy listening! 3.75/5

I know of Harry Nilsson, and I know a couple of these songs, but I never put 2 and 2 together. This was a fun listen! I have a soft spot for this genre of "your uncle or your dad's favorite pop songs," so I'm into this. Standout songs are Driving Along and Without You - which I could not help but sing along to when it started playing.

Appreciate the good songwriting. Won’t be going back to listen regularly apart from one or two songs. Favourite: The Moonbeam Song

Wonky, cooky, and playful. Not really my forte of music, but can be fun every now and then.

the spiders Harry. That was fun. Side B better than A. L heard this album (more than once at a friend’s house) growing up, I had only heard the hits on the radio, never from start to finish. Always wondered how good the album was because ya heard so much about it back in the day. Never liked Coconut (but Uncle Eric did, although the only way to hear it back then was to own the vinyl or on the radio) and that song got a lot of play. Truly glad to have finally heard this album in its entirety. Jump into the Fire is a great, deep cut, throw back that I remember (haven’t heard in over 40 years) and evidently still like. At some point I will go looking for Nielson’s greatest hits to see what else I’ve forgotten about. (2.7*s)

I like this guy. Never heard of him but knew a few songs. He has got some good stuff here. Well rounded. I was into it but could have done without the last song. Love the album title and cover lookin like a true McPoyle.

Not what I expected in a good way. Pretty decent collection of quick 70s pop songs. Didn't mind it. Never realized Harry Nilsson was the source of Coconut or of Without You. Probably won't go back to the well on this but glad I gave the album a listen as a result of this list. 2.7 stars

Love the song Gotta Get up. Also now I know who originally did the coconut song. Did recognise Without You also. Rest of the album is pretty boring though. 3 stars

- good vibes - pretty good - wouldn't add to playlist tho

Not bad, some good covers nice production, lyrics are not the greatest but all round a decent listen.

Ik vreesde voor een meme door coconut maar was eigenlijk best prima, Beatles sfeertje

Some fun drinking songs for the townie bar jukebox, some flawless ‘70s pop songs, and sometimes, both at the same time. Sometimes it leans too basic or too weird and it takes me out, but definitely a solid time with some essential tracks.

Álbum agradable, dirigido más hacia un público pop que a crear canciones con letras increíbles o composiciones fenomenales (salvo por algunos grandes momentos). Escucha entretenida. - FAVTRAKS: Gotta Get Up, Jump Into The Fire - LEASTFAVS: Early In the Morning, Coconut

Deserves 3 stars for Coconut alone. Has an eclectic collection of music, but it's hit and miss.

I guess you'd have to be in the mood for this. Just not a mood I'm often in 😂.

I didn’t get the album at the start. My first impressions were that it was a satire and parody album, but then there were some actual songs that came off as genuine. I think the album is trying to be tongue in cheek and genuine at points, which is cool and unique. Granted, it’s at the cost that some songs are just bad. Standouts: The Moonbeam Song, Without You, Jump into the Fire, and I’ll Never Leave You.

The Beatles scurry mercilessly through this record. I was surprised to find this was the man who created the hit \"without you.\" My other favourite was \"the moonbeam song\", which I found enchanting. I can appreciate this album, and believe it would sound delightful spinning around on a record player, but it fell short in patches in terms of musical and lyrical variation. It has the emotion of a film soundtrack, and the production of a vinyl record. There is a story here, and with some more turns on the turntable I might be able to unravel and enjoy it more. It is also incredibly beatles-esque.

I was pleasantly surprised by this. I'm not sure why I was so unexcited when I saw his name but I was proven wrong. Tones of Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello. Multiple songs on here I didn't realize he performed.

Kinda gives Beatles vibes but without the invention of their later years. Middling 3.

Very listenable. Not really my style.

Don't recall knowing this artist or album, but the songs certainly rang some bells. Generally pretty enjoyable. A few steps up from classic singer/songwriter junk of the era, but I wouldn't quite call this "rock."

The whimsical title didn't inspire me with much hope that I would enjoy this, but it was alright in the end, if a tad bland. Didn't realise Without You was Harry Nilsson but there you are.

Jump Into The Fire was on the Shaun White Snowboarding soundtrack and maybe it was just the context of the game but I always thought it was like a 2000’s rock/funk/alt jam. Even though this album didn’t totally click for me on first listen, I recognize good songwriting when I hear it

This didn't really do much for me. Nothing is truly bad, nothing is truly great.

Nothing crazy

Put the lime in the coconut! Enjoyed this album more than I expected to, would like to check out more.

Bright Beatlesque pop rock. A little sappy at times, but pretty breezy and enjoyable. Best song: Without You

Pretty good, very relaxed

This is the Harry Nilsson guy? Did he coin Nilsson Schmilsson? That's pretty catchy. The music is good.

Has a nice singer-songwriter pop vibe... ala Randy Newman in places as well as a John Lennon influence/flair. Without You is miles ahead of anything else on this album for entertainment, though i'll admit Coconut is quirky and fun. Most of the rest is pretty pleasant but not all that memorable.

6.5/10 Very peaceful lovely little folk album. i can tell it is pretty iconic for its time. i got some beatles vibes def which were nice. My favourite songs were the love songs. Faves: without you ill never leave you

Ok, without you is a classic. Last two tracks are also good. The rest is goody two shoes cringy stuff.

I'm hesitant now whenever boomer pop stuff comes up on this list but I actually liked this. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could

This is a nice bunch of soft rock/folk rock songs and then all of a sudden… “Coconut” which is just bizarre here. Not a lot of congruence among songs on the album but most of the songs are solid.

Not bad

I saw the artist and thought this was one of them dudes from one of the most recent shit, boy bands. It isn't, so bonus right there. Have to say this album surprised me how much I enjoyed, being from the the early 70's. Nice range of mellow to some bangers to a song you'll never get out of your head after you listen. Yea, I'm talking the Coconut song. But shit, I still liked that song too. Not that I want to pick on one song, but besides, I'll Never Leave You, I liked everything I heard. Jump Into The Fire probably my favorite, but again, I liked them all. I remember Without You being played on the radio as kid and was a close 2nd to Jump into the Fire. A couple side notes, The GAP band also did a song called Early in the Morning and the Cars did a song called Let the Good Times Roll. Both great songs and great bands. I dug this album. Can't say it's anything I would listen to on a regular basis, but I have enjoyed my listens after the last couple days. This is a good 3.5 for me. Struggling whether to scoreboard it a 3 or 4........ 3.5

There's a good 1-2-3 punch with Without You, Coconut, and Let the Good Times Roll, but besides that, it's kind of middle of the road or worse. Ends on an overwrought note with I'll Never Leave You.

A couple of monster songs in the day. Without You reminds of some lonely times during Middle school. Jump into the cooks! Mixed blessings.

2.5 - The name is funny. I knew one song off of this, The Moonbeam Song, which I love, so I was expecting to quite like this album, but it was just okay. The Moonbeam Song and Without You are pretty good, but some of the other songs actually irritated me, like Coconut and Jump Into the Fire. I wasn't impressed by the beginning of the album either. They honestly kind of sounded like worse Billy Joel... It made me surprised that the good songs on here are so good when everything else is so meh. I'll Never Leave You was alright, but not as good as the best songs. Usually I'd give it a solid three since it has multiple songs I like, but the songs I didn't like bog it down enough that I'm giving it a 2.5.

The one standout on this, “Without you”, is fantastic and has more than stood the test of time. “Jump in the fire” would probably have been a great song if they had cut it down from 7 to 4 minutes. I was pretty board with the rest. Average 2.5/5 rounding up for the one great track.

Great and classic album, specially for without you.

Surprisingly liked this more than I thought I would as strange as the compilation was to me.

A weird one, sounded like a musical soundtrack. Definitely one of those 70s weird albums. Not sure if it was comedy or not, the album title makes.me think yes!

you really made me listen to an entire album solely because you wanted me to hear the coconut song

Enjoyed. Went back to listen again. Knew a few :)

The album doesn't convince me. I found most of the songs a bit lame. It was nice to hear the original Without You again. I was actually only familiar with the cover version by Mariah Carey. I was very happy about the Coconut song, which I only knew as a cover version from the Muppet Show. All in all, I find the album uninteresting.

Fun old stuff. Put the lime in the coconut.

Overall listenable. Better than Scott walker

Some classics in here - never thought i knew his music. Enjoyed it.

Rating: 6/10 Pretty good album overall. The first few songs were just okay, I think the album really picks up starting with Without You. The music and melodies become a lot more interesting and enjoyable and his voice stands out more. Favorite songs: Without You, Coconut, Let The Good Times Roll, Jump In The Fire. Worst songs: Driving Along, I'll Never Leave You.

When I was a kid I listened to a Little Mermaid cover album that had "Coconut" sung by Sebastian. I never thought I'd listen to the original. Other than that this album was fun. In some songs Nilsson definitely sounded like a Beatles member.

Not consistent but some good tracks.

Sorta interesting for the time period

Holy shit, this is where Coconut came from!? The pop and rock tracks are good. I think the opening song is the best. I'm not normally a fan of ballads, but Nilsson makes his stand out with some fun instrument choices (like the banjo on I'll Never Leave You). Early in the Morning sucks though. I listened to the original recording by Louis Jordan and it's so much better. The scourge of white blues brings this album down.

It was a solid, chill listen, but not necessarily what I would come back to. Liking Gotta Get Up and Early In the Morning so far. Pretty relaxing. Without you solid Didn't realize this is where "Coconut" came from. Chuckled when it came on. Enjoyed listening to Jump in the Fire.

Always loved "Coconut" song. 🥥

Three tracks stood out to me - 'Gotta Get Up', 'Coconut', 'Jump In the Fire'. Everything else is fine, nothing bad just nothing I'd be motivated to return to. My core memory of Henry Nilsson comes from the only time I saw Sonic Youth. (Starlight Ballroom in Philadelphia. RIP). This album is on as they are coming on stage and the music is brought down for them to start. Thurston asks the sound person for more Nilsson so he turns 'Coconut' back up. Thurston jams for a second before saying 'ok that's enough' then they launch into Incinerate.

I mean it's alright like

Out of all the three stars so far, this may be my favourite. Great sound and some songs I recognised (hello Gotta Get Up!). Favourite track: Without You.

Idk what I expected but it certainly wasnt this silly groovy fun record. It was a good time but I dont see this sticking with me.

I can’t believe this dude is responsible for lime in the coconut. Interesting blend of songs and well done vocally

Was ok

There are five kinds of HN songs, each corresponding to the stars of the scoring system: 1. The boring as hell rock song (down) 2. The borderline novelty song (coconut) 3. The good rock song (gotta get up) 4. The quirky pop rock song (together) 5. The grandiose pop ballad (without you, all I think about is you) This leaves this album at the score of 2.6

Harry reminds me of Billy Joel in his songwriting and vocals. He has some classics on here that I enjoyed.

First listen Saved 4/10: Gotta Get Up Early in the Morning Down Without You

It definitely sounds different than a lot of 70s music. There’s a lot of variation in the songs in just a short amount of time. I also find it funny that Jump Into The fire takes up a fifth of the album but I’m not complaining because it’s a jam. Other good songs are Gotta Get Up, Without You, and Coconut. Overall a solid listening experience that was a nice way to start a Saturday morning. Three stars for me.

Some sleeper hits on here. Easy to listen to and enjoyable, but I probably won't be going back to this album.

Well, this is a pretty smooth album of songs. It's inoffensive. I think the standout track is 'Without You'. The low point is 'Coconut'. Overall, I prefer my music to be a bit edgier than this. 3/5

Hey! There are a couple classic tracks on here, and overall a solid album. I was unaware of this artist, while being very aware of these tracks Gotta Get Up and Coconut. Overall, pleasant listening - but not overwhelmingly good.

Niet heel bijzonder maar gewoon prima

It was OK, but I'll never listen to it again.

The album cover gave me Big Lebowski vibes, and I think The Dude would like it. I liked a couple songs I never heard before. Jump into the Fire was a nice surprise. I'll be listening to this album again. 3.4 stars

I didn't realize how many of these songs I already knew going into this album as someone who vaguely knew the name but had never listened to Harry. "Gotta Get Up" gained new fame from Netflix's "Russian Doll," which is where I knew it from. It's a great jam to kick off the album—it kind of sounds like what would happen if Billy Joel and the Beatles did a song together. I definitely get why this guy was known as the American Beatle. His style is very eclectic and experimental in the same way the Beatles were in the late 60s, and a lot of the instrumentation sounds Beatles-esque. He even sort of sounds like Paul McCartney on "Driving Along" and "Down." At other times his voice and the music bare some resemblance to Aaron Neville, Hall and Oates, and the Beach Boys. I had no idea he covered "Without You"—as a millennial, it's always been a Mariah Carey song to me, and that version remains my favorite. But I probably like the original Badfinger version second best; sorry, Harry. I also didn't know this dude was responsible for "Coconut." What a weird (and cringe by today's standards) song ... and yet, inexplicably a jam. But it gets a little annoying after a while too. Conflicted feelings about that one. Putting it after "Without You" is kind of hilarious, though. "Let the Good Times Roll" sounds like another weird hybrid of the Beatles ("When I'm Sixty-Four"), Billy Joel, and honky tonk. The harmonica solo is fun. "Jump Into The Fire" sounds like a mashup of "I Fought the Law" and "Mony Mony." It's a good song, but it goes on too long. The drum solo is cool. I wasn't a huge fan of "The Moonbeam Song" or "I'll Never Leave You," though I appreciate the different movements the latter goes through, almost like a classical piece. I'd give it a 3.5 out of 4. It's pretty good, but it has a few clunkers for me.

я не знаю как это оценить

Okay so I loved this album. It felt like something I could really groove to. Pretty sure I accidentally listened to it twice but overall really enjoyable 3/5

Very endearing

cool paul mccartney songs

alcune carine alcune inascoltabili e una molto bella. si sente la mancanza di un MC come Kendrick Lamar

Enjoyable Beatlesish fun

Really powerful beautiful voice, lyrics, and dips into some amazing blues production. There are some great tracks here, it's just a shame that all this talent is used to make songs like coconut lol. 3/5.

Dare I say, I enjoyed this album?

that was fun could i write poetry to this? y

It's a pretty ok record. I like "Jump Into the Fire" a lot.

I never knew that he wrote some many songs that I knew.

Some good tracks here!

This was pretty fun

This is an interesting mix of songs.

Pretty good. Nice and mellow.

Half the songs really enjoyed most of all coconut, without you very good didn’t know who he was before. Enjoyed half of it other half was a struggle at times

A decent album, but one of the 1000 best of all time? Don't think so.

Enjoyable and goofy

Notable tracks: Without You, I’ll Never Leave You, Gotta Get Up, Coconut

Day #1: Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson "Harry Edward Nilsson III (June 15, 1941 – January 15, 1994), sometimes credited as Nilsson, was an American singer-songwriter who reached the peak of his success in the early 1970s. His work is characterized by pioneering vocal overdub experiments, a return to the Great American Songbook, and fusions of Caribbean sounds. Nilsson was one of the few major pop-rock recording artists to achieve significant commercial success without performing major public concerts or touring regularly" Decent album, classic pop-rock with clear McCartney influence. "Without You" seems to be a fan favourite, but I enjoyed "Gotta Get Up" and "Jump Into the Fire" (with its interesting drum solo) more.

Easy listening, LIME IN DE COCONUT

Some of my all time favorites....

Decent, saved Without You to playlist. A couple terrible songs though.

Coconut is a fever dream. He must have been high when writing this song. Psychedelics. Witch doctor. There is no way this album can be classified as one genre. Rhythmic. He should write alarm jingles for Apple. Sad. Melancholy.

Blues with pop couple surprising hits

Generally not for me, a little sad, but the Russian Doll theme is great!

3. That's not the number of stars I'm giving this album, it's the number of grams of cocaine that I imagine my Dad managed snort while listening to this 30 minute LP.

Songs I've heard of from an artist I've never heard of. Some fun songs here with lyrics that hit home, but ultimately kind of a boring listen.

This didn't really hit for me. Although, "without you" English and Spanish version is *chefs kiss*

No opinion or knowledge of Nilsson before this. Knew a lot of the music without knowing who or why. Kind of reminded me of Paul Williams at first. So much so that I always thought his biggest hit, Without You was Paul Williams. Then track 3 Early in the Morning came up. Got my attention. Bluesy and original and very short. Really liked track 5 Down, my favorite song from the album. Had no idea Coconut was him. Seemed quite contrived or maybe not my taste. Jump into the Fire was great. Didn't know he was referred to as the American Beatle and was close with them from the 60's. Partied hard with them in early 70's in LA. Even lived with Ringo. I know, I know I can read Wikipedia- but still interesting.

Haven’t heard these songs in a long time

Clearly a good songwriter and even more clear that he was influenced by the early 70s Beatles sound. Interesting that a number of these songs made there way into American pop culture too whether it be TV or movie montage scenes. And while I can appreciate the balance of quirky with serious…not my bag. An appropriate album title for my taste.

Great album name and a good (not great) listen. Some obvious Beatles influence, but plenty of stuff that feels like it should have been left on the cutting room floor. “Coconut” alone excludes this one from going any higher than 3.

Good, not great. Above average. I see why The Beatles were fans of Mr. Nilsson. Without You is a certified banger. The entire album is brought to a halt by Coconut, which is an abortion of a song, and then drags for the final three songs. Could have been a 4/5 with a better finish, but ultimately 3/5.

A fun album with some good tracks.

POV: You're a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant man who retired with a multi-million dollar pension and moved to Key West with your wife (that you hate). Your kids (that you hate) are visiting. You're tempted to make a nice stiff drink when you wake up, but decide instead to take out your boat and throw on Nilsson Schmilsson to get away from the family. For just a moment, life is good.

I fucking love Jump Into The Fire (it was in shaun white snowboarding on the PS3 and i always used to bump it). Other than that it wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t great. Coconut was troll 🧌

Bro was going through it on this album, some solid tracks and consistent sound. Gotta Get Up was used in Russian Doll and stuck in my head nowadays, for the better!

2nd half of the album is better than the 1st but the whole thing is good.

good early 70's vibe.

some is :) some is :(

It gets three stars because I enjoyed the entire album, but I probably wouldn’t seek it out to play. Nilsson has a great voice and it was fun to sing along with the hits I remembered from my childhood

Spikey!! 70s music. Some fun ones to sing

Not every song was a winner but enough for a 3 star.

Nice album for a drive home from work.

Good listen, I knew some of the songs already. Would need to be in a specific mood to listen again.

Wasnt bad honestly. i have a hard time categorizing this but i have to agree with the genre Pop-folk "put the lime in the coconut, drink 'em bot' up" reminds me of a more folk leaning R.Stevie Moore

I wasn’t aware of this artist but had heard some of his songs. Very interesting

I'd never heard the name, but when the album started I immediately recognised the voice. It's surprising how many tracks I could sing along to. Good 70's fun.

Mixed bag. Unique sound and some memorable songs. Some have a circus-like feel. His biggest hit (Without You) was his probably my least favorite.

Started out strong, but some of those tracks towards the end were garbage. A couple songs were nice and catchy, but it was mostly unmemorable

Didn't finish listening to it. But also couldn't get into it :(

Known Before: Some songs Standouts: 6. Without You 7. You put the weed in the coconut, and light that shit up 6.5

Good listen for whatever you find yourself getting in to

Good, but maybe not a multi multi listen

Having never heard of the artist or the album, I was surprised that many (maybe even most) of the tracks were songs I had heard before. Unfortunately, they’re not anything I’m particularly fond of, even though it’s by no means a bad album.

pleasant (except for coconut which is a headache), kinda boring

- it was alright but that coconut song really pissed me off

Love his energy, he´s got a good voice and his rendition of "Without You" is superb. However, there´s nothing in this album I found memorable or that made would make me revisit in the future. Great album closer tho.

Some great moments, and happy to experience it. A little too corny at times for my part

I enjoyed this pretty well.

Enjoyed it but didn't love it.

No. Ei tämä nyt ihan mun juttu ole. Ei pääsisi uudestaan soittoon. Mutta ei kamala.

Some bangers here

It seems immediately obvious why this one is here, but it does throw up a few surprises. The first song is jaunty and fun. When Ken Lee starts playing, it feels out of place. I was completely disarmed by the Coconut song.

Vibes: Summer in 1970s working class America. Favorite: The Moonbeam Song Least Favorite: Coconut

A pretty fun and smooth listen from a guy who clearly really loved The Beatles. A few tracks were on the dull side and more were short of impressive, but there was enough weird wacky stuff to really keep me engaged. Jump Into The Fire is for sure an all-timer and very much feels like the centerpiece of the record, such a sick track. Scorsese knows how to pick ‘em. Top tracks: Gotta Get Up, Coconut, Jump Into The Fire

A couple good tracks, but not really my cup of tea. Even Coconut (the only track I knew before) wasn’t great. I liked the sound, but I also got bored

Pretty bland stuff

What a random album! So much variety here and I couldn’t decide how serious to take it. Loved in the bio how the Beatles named Harry Nilsson as their favorite American artist at one point. I recognized and liked a few songs from this album. Liked learning his history and getting to know some more great 70s music. Three stars.

This is interesting. It has some odd lyrics but nothing I would call "funny". overall it was just alright. Its probably 2.5 stars closer to 3

Frykta da skulle vær ganske jævlig, men va i grunn heilt ok. Also, Ken Lee

I really like this. Chill and subtle. I'm a big fan of quiet/chill music in general, though. So this is just in my wheelhouse. I really enjoy the different instrumentations. The horn section in Down was a really great touch. I really enjoyed the first half of the album, but then I just started getting lost in the second half, starting with Coconut.

a mixed bag ! some beautiful songs and then also the song coconut is on it

Some good ballads, decent roundup. Nothing major

Without you and Coconut are the songs you are most likely going to remember. Huge vocal range.

Overall not a terrible album. I don't much about Harry Nilsson other than what I've read in other reviews here and I've never listened to any of his albums until now. This one didn't hit me exceptionally hard or anything but it's cool to know that this is where the "lime in the coconut" song came from. Other than that I didn't find anything too memorable on this album.

- Gotta Get Up 2.5/5

There are a few songs on this album that I'd heard before despite not knowing anything at all about Harry Nilsson. Good listen overall, but I'm not sure the songs add up to a cohesive total due to their variety. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it was a bit of a headscratcher for this album. Gotta Get Up is a great song to start the day, and Coconut has some carefully hidden existential dread. Without You might be a little melodramatic for my taste. Let The Good Times Roll might be my favorite.

Put the lime in the coconut :o

Highlights: Gotta Get Up, Coconut. In a nutshell: going hard. Ahh yes, Nilsson. The guy responsible for the nauseatingly heartbreaking cover of Without You (yep, it’s a cover. Written in 1970, by two members of Badfinger), Gotta Get Up (an absolute banger that experienced a resurgence after appearing in Netflix's Russian Doll) and the catchy jam-fest Coconut (read between the lines, friends). Jump Into The Fire is overplayed on classic radio stations and overused in commercials (groan), promoting cars and adventure activities. Which is a shame because the extended cut with instrumental breaks are fantastic. I gotta give props to the session musicians and Harry's vocal acrobatics. Supposedly he burst a large haemorrhoid after singing the high notes in Without You. To Harry, it was worth the pain. Overall: 5/10

Coconut song guy!!

Overall, great voice and lyricist. The first half of the album was pretty standard 60's/70's singer-songwriter fair. The second half was an interesting mix. Without You showcased his vocal range. Coconut was a good novelty song. Let the Good Times Roll was a nice rolling New Orleans and country-inspired piano-guided song. Jump Into the Fire was a fun almost glam rock song, and probably the only reason I would revisit this album. Not a bad album but not really memorable.

If the Beatles were a little less catchy and had a bit more energy, it would probably sound something like this. The best song on the album is probably Without You, but as this is a cover, I feel like Nilsson shouldn't get the credit for that. I recognized the Coconut song, but had no idea it was originally a Nilsson song. It's weird and the fake Jamaican accent is off-putting. None of the other songs were really that notable.

A pretty forgettable album, until you get to the "lime in the coconut song," which is one of the most unforgettable songs of all time. I had no idea who that song was by, so it took me by complete surprise. Weird listen.

Some good classics

First half of this album sounds like The Beatles, mixed with Simon and Garfunkel. The second half went strange, with "I can't live without you" ballads and songs about Coconuts. Decent tunes.

Never heard any of these songs. Very enjoyable to listen to something new.

Russian Doll soundtrack

There were interesting songs, but really it felt like you could pick a record out of a crate at random and you'd not really be able to tell the difference from this record Best: Without You

Good to revisit some classics

Enjoyed

So many recognizable songs but never heard of this guy.

Sunday Morning Music

Enjoyed it, reminded me a lot of John Denver. The classics like "Without You" and "Coconut" were probably my least favorites of the album. I loved the quieter tracks, beautifully sung, so expressive.

I had no idea what to expect going in as I didn't recognize the artist. I knew some of the songs and was pleasantly surprised by the variety and interesting songs. Wasn't my favorite but I can see why it's on the list. 3

Need to listen to this a couple more times. I really just know Coconut from Reservoir Dogs, but I should give the rest a chance.

"Without You" and "Coconut" Good Stuff

cutesy little vibe

Put the lime in the coconut

Not unpleasant

-I can’t liiiiiiive without the lime in the coconut -Drums at 4 mins in Jump into the Fire are rad as hell -moods switch from low to high, sadder songs have a nice melody to them and the upbeat songs have a great rhythm

pretty ok

Not bad, not really my thing though. Sillier moments and more casual vocal deliveries (ie coconut) took away from the overall experience for me.

Some good stuff on there, plus some so-so.

put de lime in de coconut ...

I had never heard his name, but surprisingly I knew a couple songs of this album. It is a nice encounter to cross my path with such an uplifting record in this collection. Without You is obviously the main stand-out. Gotta Get Up, Coconut and Jump Into The Fire do not fall very far behind in terms of my personal taste. Nice surprise, good album.

Recognised a couple more than I thought I would, but still just a background album for me

Better than I expected. A few good songs and some I'd heard covered before which surprised me. Got a bit dreary at times though

Pretty chill, a fair few songs I recognised. Probably wouldn't play this a huge amount myself but recognise it's pretty good.

Nice little pop album

Kort och gott

Lots of ‘oh, that was this guy’ songs on this one.

some classics

ganz cool aba random

Used his talent to be goofy and corny. Had fun though.

Definitely getting the Beatles influences on this one, a pleasant listen if somewhat lacking in a personality strong enough to remember at the end of the day.

Nice and cosy!

Quintessential 70s airy and melodic

Strong start, turns about halfway through (coconut), strong finish. Overall a bit too eccentric for my tastes, wouldn’t seek out most of this album.

Really interesting. I can see how pop evolved from this. His pop ballads and groovy rhythms have been continuously referenced and used throughout the history of pop. I enjoyed it, even if much of it is not my style.

Without You tutun kuuloinen tai sit siitä tulee Abban Winner Takes It All mieleen. Tää on tämmöstä poppia, mitenhän sitä nyt kuvais. Ihan jees

Short album, catching tunes. Never thought this was the guy who wrote a few big time songs. Kinda folks, kinda American Rock. Decent.

“Gotta get up” was a great starter track. Not my favourite genre of music but a great listen, clearly inspired by the Beatles but very unique to itself. We obviously cant forget “coconut” what a track that is.

It ain't for me. 3 for neutral

Highlights so far, 4 songs in: Everything except for The Moonbeam Song Lowlights: The fuck is this Moonbeam song... 8 songs in: I've never had such a polarizing response to an album, whether in this 1001 album exercise or not. There are some genuinely great songs in here. And then there's Moonbeam and Coconut. I appreciate an artist that will do some weird shit. Not sure how I'll feel about this album in the end but it goes places. In the end, I mostly liked this album, but the weird sojourns into repetitive drums solos or bass lines or just boring ass songs about moonbeams keep me from pushing this above a 3 out of 5.

Only knew the hits, but this was worth the listen.

Presque classique

Good vibes. Not a fan of 70' music.

Good, a smooth listen, a few songs I recognized.

Way better than i thought it would be

it was fine, didn't blow me away...

Harry Nilsson has such a dynamic and interesting voice. Without You & Coconut are the most recognizable songs.

This album is such a mixed bag. Some tracks I feel myself really getting into it, then out of left field there's one like Coconut. It doesn't really gel for me.

- Gotta Get Up, Driving Along, The Moonbeam Song, I'll Never Leave You: that's some S-tier songwriting right there. - Jump Into The Fire sounds like a motherfucking train barrelling at you. - Too frequently Nilsson slips into cloying shtick here. Coconut, Early in the Morning, Let the Good Times Roll: I don't need any of that. - Unpopular opinion, but Without You has never really done it for me. Gorgeous recording, wonderful vocal performance (and seriously, Nilsson's delivery all across this album is fucking incredible. The guy can fucking sing), but as a song I just find it kind of unmemorable. - Down is...fine. - So, 50% absolutely brilliant, 20% good-not-great, 30% eh. At his best, Nilsson is a frighteningly good singer-songwriter, but on first listen, I can't quite call this a favourite. Who knows though! Maybe the bits I don't love now will grow on me. - The vocal layering on I'll Never Leave You is just *chef's kiss*

Interesting album that varied from .. yikes white man signing soul when he can't to catchy good 70s music.

Good vibes. Not something I would listen to again though.

Didn’t know those songs were his. Cool.

Pretty enjoyable and fun sounding

Frykta da skulle vær ganske jævlig, men va i grunn heilt ok. Also, Ken Lee

This was a treat.

Un honnête album de rock tranquille. C'était sympa mais pas transcendant, dans le style Cat Stevens est quand même au dessus. J'ai bien aimé Without You cependant.

7/10 Напомнило саундтрек к "стражи галактики", возможно там и были его песни. Некоторые треки мне знакомы. В целом что-то понравилось, некоторые были скучноваты.

Fun album that starts well but never is as good as that opening track.

fun album to listen to until you reach the last 4, even 5 songs… they are just not good. like i dont need some bozo telling me about lime and coconut for 3 minutes. before that last part a very decent album that, yea, is forgettable but not in a oh this album sucks forgettable. * Down * thinking about adding it to a playlist

pretty meh but an ok enough listen.

Yay!Was happy to hear this as it's from my childhood. I liked about 3 or 4 songs, esp when his voice is breathier like it is on The Point.

Early 70s experimental pop, with a few gems.

Interesting how a lot of people said it was very beatles vibes because thats the first thing i thought too! some interesting tunes, although i wouldnt listen to it myself on my daily basis, i think! Early in the morning very niceeee!

2 great songs. Interesting music.

Awesome name for an album. Plus it had the coconut/lime song and a few other bangers.

Skemmtileg plata, skringileg á köflum en ekki á slæman hátt.

3 solid stars.

Some catchy composition, lyrics are fairly bland and placing the meaning is difficult, repetitive songs across the whole album. Not my taste but some iconic tunes for a 52 year old album. Without you is by far the most popular track and displays the most musical complexity for me. I find it a compelling and emotional track however it just doesn't provide enough interesting ideas to keep me listening.

"American Beatle" his voice offends me a little. I like without you too much to give it a 2.

Some good songs on here, feels a little generic rock though. 3.5/5 FS: Down, Coconut, Fire, Never Leave

Yeah, it was ok. One or two memorable/recognisable tunes. Felt a bit kitsch and schmaltzy/gimmicky, even for 71. Ho hum.

Some unmistakable hits

This was fine. I don’t think I’d ever heard Coconut in its entirety before and it is fun, if maybe a bit appropriative.

Sometimes sweet, sometimes sad, sometimes funny, sometimes bad

Once again, utterly okay. Album cover reminds me of BeauFol 2.5

A surprise winner. The gentle start and ramp up to proper classic rock makes this an ideal morning album. I'm gonna add this to my "music for plants" playlist.

1. 2.5/5 2. 2/5 3. 2/5 4. 1,5/5 5. 2/5 6. 3/5 7. 3/5 8. 3/5 9. 3/5 10. 2/5 =3

Not great, not terrible 3,1

I think overall that was a nice listen and I definitely put it in my random one album a day list but, nothing stood out too too much to me. Favorite Tracks : ??? Rating : 3 / 5

a few great tracks and a bunch of okay tracks

I think this guy was pretty cool. And staggering/swaying to the beat of a different drummer.

Pretty good

I don't mind this. No skips. Concise collection of songs that don't overstay their welcome

Got through my backlog with this one - some decent tracks - his overdubbed vocal thing is interesting. Coconut song is silly.

Schmilly. Some recognizable songs on this album, that I wasn’t expecting as I’m not overly familiar with this chap. But some fun tunes that’ll get you going Early in the Morning. Not my favourite record ever, but Gotta Get Up is an undeniable bop. I don’t know who decided the verb for ‘good times’ would be ‘roll’, but we’re rolling with it.

Pretty fitting that we got this album on a holiday Monday, definitely feels like cottage music! Had heard of Harry before but it was fun to connect a bunch of these familiar songs to the artist. Fun music but it feels like he is imitating other acts sometimes - Beatles, Beach Boys and Randy Newman specifically. Gotta get up is a banger for sure. Also a fan of Down and Without You (classic!). There weren't any songs that I didn't enjoy. Solid album that I will probably go back to!

Album was delightful and fun. Just silly enough to be relaxed and poppy enough to have made a name for itself.

1. Gotta Get Up - Very peppy start to the album, can see why this was chosen as the opening track 2. Driving Along - Solid song, liked the second half of the song 3. Early In the Morning - It was ok, not sold 100% on this song 4. The Moonbeam Song - "Sun King" energy with the backing vocals 5. Down - Opening verse was solid, got very repetitive -- I really liked the back instruments 6. Without You - Beautiful orchestration 7. Coconut - She put the lime in the coconut 8. Let the Good Times Roll - Solid 9. Jump Into The Fire - 10/10 10. I'll Never Leave You - A quiet closer, a nice come down after the previous track Overall - Solid album with some high highs (opener Gotta Get Up and Jump In to the Fire), with some lows (Coconut), I still really enjoyed this album. 7.5/10

Good bathrobe vibes

Many have covered "Without You", but perdonally I don't think that anyone has bettered the Nilsson version. Anumber of very commercial songs, e.g. "Gotta Get Up", and "Jump Into The Fire", plus the rather annoying "Coconut".

Less engaging as a whole than I thought it would be.

JUMP INTO THE FIRE!! WE CAN MAKE EACH OTHER HAPPY!! WE CAN MAKE EACH OTHER HAPPY!! WE CAN MAKE EACH OTHER HAPPY!! WE CAN MAKE EACH OTHER HAPPY!! Awesome, Harry. You crazy asshole. This guy totally did LSD with the Beatles. Let the Good Times Roll, you fucking coconut.

Going into this blindly and the first song is one I've definitely heard. Gotta Get Up, it's the song they used in the Russian Doll show. Without You is also a popular song. What the fuck! Coconut is his too?! "She put the lime in the coconut...."

Quite a few tracks that I recognised from various bits of popular culture, although I've never heard of the artist. Decent listen

Not bad, just a bit boring.

Ken Leeeeee! Tulibu dibu douchuuuuuuu!
