Reviews (page 11 of 13)
This is an interesting mix of songs.
Pretty good. Nice and mellow.
Half the songs really enjoyed most of all coconut, without you very good didn’t know who he was before. Enjoyed half of it other half was a struggle at times
A decent album, but one of the 1000 best of all time? Don't think so.
Enjoyable and goofy
Notable tracks: Without You, I’ll Never Leave You, Gotta Get Up, Coconut
Day #1: Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson "Harry Edward Nilsson III (June 15, 1941 – January 15, 1994), sometimes credited as Nilsson, was an American singer-songwriter who reached the peak of his success in the early 1970s. His work is characterized by pioneering vocal overdub experiments, a return to the Great American Songbook, and fusions of Caribbean sounds. Nilsson was one of the few major pop-rock recording artists to achieve significant commercial success without performing major public concerts or touring regularly" Decent album, classic pop-rock with clear McCartney influence. "Without You" seems to be a fan favourite, but I enjoyed "Gotta Get Up" and "Jump Into the Fire" (with its interesting drum solo) more.
Easy listening, LIME IN DE COCONUT
Some of my all time favorites....
Decent, saved Without You to playlist. A couple terrible songs though.
Coconut is a fever dream. He must have been high when writing this song. Psychedelics. Witch doctor. There is no way this album can be classified as one genre. Rhythmic. He should write alarm jingles for Apple. Sad. Melancholy.
Blues with pop couple surprising hits
Generally not for me, a little sad, but the Russian Doll theme is great!
3. That's not the number of stars I'm giving this album, it's the number of grams of cocaine that I imagine my Dad managed snort while listening to this 30 minute LP.
Songs I've heard of from an artist I've never heard of. Some fun songs here with lyrics that hit home, but ultimately kind of a boring listen.
This didn't really hit for me. Although, "without you" English and Spanish version is *chefs kiss*
No opinion or knowledge of Nilsson before this. Knew a lot of the music without knowing who or why. Kind of reminded me of Paul Williams at first. So much so that I always thought his biggest hit, Without You was Paul Williams. Then track 3 Early in the Morning came up. Got my attention. Bluesy and original and very short. Really liked track 5 Down, my favorite song from the album. Had no idea Coconut was him. Seemed quite contrived or maybe not my taste. Jump into the Fire was great. Didn't know he was referred to as the American Beatle and was close with them from the 60's. Partied hard with them in early 70's in LA. Even lived with Ringo. I know, I know I can read Wikipedia- but still interesting.
Haven’t heard these songs in a long time
Clearly a good songwriter and even more clear that he was influenced by the early 70s Beatles sound. Interesting that a number of these songs made there way into American pop culture too whether it be TV or movie montage scenes. And while I can appreciate the balance of quirky with serious…not my bag. An appropriate album title for my taste.
Great album name and a good (not great) listen. Some obvious Beatles influence, but plenty of stuff that feels like it should have been left on the cutting room floor. “Coconut” alone excludes this one from going any higher than 3.
Good, not great. Above average. I see why The Beatles were fans of Mr. Nilsson. Without You is a certified banger. The entire album is brought to a halt by Coconut, which is an abortion of a song, and then drags for the final three songs. Could have been a 4/5 with a better finish, but ultimately 3/5.
A fun album with some good tracks.
POV: You're a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant man who retired with a multi-million dollar pension and moved to Key West with your wife (that you hate). Your kids (that you hate) are visiting. You're tempted to make a nice stiff drink when you wake up, but decide instead to take out your boat and throw on Nilsson Schmilsson to get away from the family. For just a moment, life is good.
I fucking love Jump Into The Fire (it was in shaun white snowboarding on the PS3 and i always used to bump it). Other than that it wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t great. Coconut was troll 🧌
Bro was going through it on this album, some solid tracks and consistent sound. Gotta Get Up was used in Russian Doll and stuck in my head nowadays, for the better!
2nd half of the album is better than the 1st but the whole thing is good.
good early 70's vibe.
some is :) some is :(
It gets three stars because I enjoyed the entire album, but I probably wouldn’t seek it out to play. Nilsson has a great voice and it was fun to sing along with the hits I remembered from my childhood
Spikey!! 70s music. Some fun ones to sing
Not every song was a winner but enough for a 3 star.
Nice album for a drive home from work.
Good listen, I knew some of the songs already. Would need to be in a specific mood to listen again.
Wasnt bad honestly. i have a hard time categorizing this but i have to agree with the genre Pop-folk "put the lime in the coconut, drink 'em bot' up" reminds me of a more folk leaning R.Stevie Moore
I wasn’t aware of this artist but had heard some of his songs. Very interesting
I'd never heard the name, but when the album started I immediately recognised the voice. It's surprising how many tracks I could sing along to. Good 70's fun.
Mixed bag. Unique sound and some memorable songs. Some have a circus-like feel. His biggest hit (Without You) was his probably my least favorite.
Started out strong, but some of those tracks towards the end were garbage. A couple songs were nice and catchy, but it was mostly unmemorable
Didn't finish listening to it. But also couldn't get into it :(
Known Before: Some songs Standouts: 6. Without You 7. You put the weed in the coconut, and light that shit up 6.5
Good listen for whatever you find yourself getting in to
Good, but maybe not a multi multi listen
Having never heard of the artist or the album, I was surprised that many (maybe even most) of the tracks were songs I had heard before. Unfortunately, they’re not anything I’m particularly fond of, even though it’s by no means a bad album.
pleasant (except for coconut which is a headache), kinda boring
- it was alright but that coconut song really pissed me off
Love his energy, he´s got a good voice and his rendition of "Without You" is superb. However, there´s nothing in this album I found memorable or that made would make me revisit in the future. Great album closer tho.
Some great moments, and happy to experience it. A little too corny at times for my part
I enjoyed this pretty well.
Enjoyed it but didn't love it.
No. Ei tämä nyt ihan mun juttu ole. Ei pääsisi uudestaan soittoon. Mutta ei kamala.
Some bangers here
It seems immediately obvious why this one is here, but it does throw up a few surprises. The first song is jaunty and fun. When Ken Lee starts playing, it feels out of place. I was completely disarmed by the Coconut song.
Vibes: Summer in 1970s working class America. Favorite: The Moonbeam Song Least Favorite: Coconut
A pretty fun and smooth listen from a guy who clearly really loved The Beatles. A few tracks were on the dull side and more were short of impressive, but there was enough weird wacky stuff to really keep me engaged. Jump Into The Fire is for sure an all-timer and very much feels like the centerpiece of the record, such a sick track. Scorsese knows how to pick ‘em. Top tracks: Gotta Get Up, Coconut, Jump Into The Fire
A couple good tracks, but not really my cup of tea. Even Coconut (the only track I knew before) wasn’t great. I liked the sound, but I also got bored
Pretty bland stuff
What a random album! So much variety here and I couldn’t decide how serious to take it. Loved in the bio how the Beatles named Harry Nilsson as their favorite American artist at one point. I recognized and liked a few songs from this album. Liked learning his history and getting to know some more great 70s music. Three stars.
This is interesting. It has some odd lyrics but nothing I would call "funny". overall it was just alright. Its probably 2.5 stars closer to 3
Frykta da skulle vær ganske jævlig, men va i grunn heilt ok. Also, Ken Lee
I really like this. Chill and subtle. I'm a big fan of quiet/chill music in general, though. So this is just in my wheelhouse. I really enjoy the different instrumentations. The horn section in Down was a really great touch. I really enjoyed the first half of the album, but then I just started getting lost in the second half, starting with Coconut.
a mixed bag ! some beautiful songs and then also the song coconut is on it
Some good ballads, decent roundup. Nothing major
Without you and Coconut are the songs you are most likely going to remember. Huge vocal range.
Overall not a terrible album. I don't much about Harry Nilsson other than what I've read in other reviews here and I've never listened to any of his albums until now. This one didn't hit me exceptionally hard or anything but it's cool to know that this is where the "lime in the coconut" song came from. Other than that I didn't find anything too memorable on this album.
- Gotta Get Up 2.5/5
There are a few songs on this album that I'd heard before despite not knowing anything at all about Harry Nilsson. Good listen overall, but I'm not sure the songs add up to a cohesive total due to their variety. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it was a bit of a headscratcher for this album. Gotta Get Up is a great song to start the day, and Coconut has some carefully hidden existential dread. Without You might be a little melodramatic for my taste. Let The Good Times Roll might be my favorite.
Put the lime in the coconut :o
Highlights: Gotta Get Up, Coconut. In a nutshell: going hard. Ahh yes, Nilsson. The guy responsible for the nauseatingly heartbreaking cover of Without You (yep, it’s a cover. Written in 1970, by two members of Badfinger), Gotta Get Up (an absolute banger that experienced a resurgence after appearing in Netflix's Russian Doll) and the catchy jam-fest Coconut (read between the lines, friends). Jump Into The Fire is overplayed on classic radio stations and overused in commercials (groan), promoting cars and adventure activities. Which is a shame because the extended cut with instrumental breaks are fantastic. I gotta give props to the session musicians and Harry's vocal acrobatics. Supposedly he burst a large haemorrhoid after singing the high notes in Without You. To Harry, it was worth the pain. Overall: 5/10
fine
Coconut song guy!!
Overall, great voice and lyricist. The first half of the album was pretty standard 60's/70's singer-songwriter fair. The second half was an interesting mix. Without You showcased his vocal range. Coconut was a good novelty song. Let the Good Times Roll was a nice rolling New Orleans and country-inspired piano-guided song. Jump Into the Fire was a fun almost glam rock song, and probably the only reason I would revisit this album. Not a bad album but not really memorable.
If the Beatles were a little less catchy and had a bit more energy, it would probably sound something like this. The best song on the album is probably Without You, but as this is a cover, I feel like Nilsson shouldn't get the credit for that. I recognized the Coconut song, but had no idea it was originally a Nilsson song. It's weird and the fake Jamaican accent is off-putting. None of the other songs were really that notable.
A pretty forgettable album, until you get to the "lime in the coconut song," which is one of the most unforgettable songs of all time. I had no idea who that song was by, so it took me by complete surprise. Weird listen.
Some good classics
First half of this album sounds like The Beatles, mixed with Simon and Garfunkel. The second half went strange, with "I can't live without you" ballads and songs about Coconuts. Decent tunes.
Never heard any of these songs. Very enjoyable to listen to something new.
Russian Doll soundtrack
There were interesting songs, but really it felt like you could pick a record out of a crate at random and you'd not really be able to tell the difference from this record Best: Without You
Good to revisit some classics
Enjoyed
So many recognizable songs but never heard of this guy.
Sunday Morning Music
Enjoyed it, reminded me a lot of John Denver. The classics like "Without You" and "Coconut" were probably my least favorites of the album. I loved the quieter tracks, beautifully sung, so expressive.
I had no idea what to expect going in as I didn't recognize the artist. I knew some of the songs and was pleasantly surprised by the variety and interesting songs. Wasn't my favorite but I can see why it's on the list. 3
Need to listen to this a couple more times. I really just know Coconut from Reservoir Dogs, but I should give the rest a chance.
"Without You" and "Coconut" Good Stuff
cutesy little vibe
Put the lime in the coconut
Not unpleasant
-I can’t liiiiiiive without the lime in the coconut -Drums at 4 mins in Jump into the Fire are rad as hell -moods switch from low to high, sadder songs have a nice melody to them and the upbeat songs have a great rhythm
pretty ok
Not bad, not really my thing though. Sillier moments and more casual vocal deliveries (ie coconut) took away from the overall experience for me.
Some good stuff on there, plus some so-so.
put de lime in de coconut ...
I had never heard his name, but surprisingly I knew a couple songs of this album. It is a nice encounter to cross my path with such an uplifting record in this collection. Without You is obviously the main stand-out. Gotta Get Up, Coconut and Jump Into The Fire do not fall very far behind in terms of my personal taste. Nice surprise, good album.
Recognised a couple more than I thought I would, but still just a background album for me
Better than I expected. A few good songs and some I'd heard covered before which surprised me. Got a bit dreary at times though
Pretty chill, a fair few songs I recognised. Probably wouldn't play this a huge amount myself but recognise it's pretty good.
Nice little pop album
Kort och gott
Lots of ‘oh, that was this guy’ songs on this one.
some classics
ganz cool aba random
Mid
Used his talent to be goofy and corny. Had fun though.
Definitely getting the Beatles influences on this one, a pleasant listen if somewhat lacking in a personality strong enough to remember at the end of the day.
Nice and cosy!
Quintessential 70s airy and melodic
Strong start, turns about halfway through (coconut), strong finish. Overall a bit too eccentric for my tastes, wouldn’t seek out most of this album.
Really interesting. I can see how pop evolved from this. His pop ballads and groovy rhythms have been continuously referenced and used throughout the history of pop. I enjoyed it, even if much of it is not my style.
Without You tutun kuuloinen tai sit siitä tulee Abban Winner Takes It All mieleen. Tää on tämmöstä poppia, mitenhän sitä nyt kuvais. Ihan jees
Short album, catching tunes. Never thought this was the guy who wrote a few big time songs. Kinda folks, kinda American Rock. Decent.
“Gotta get up” was a great starter track. Not my favourite genre of music but a great listen, clearly inspired by the Beatles but very unique to itself. We obviously cant forget “coconut” what a track that is.
It ain't for me. 3 for neutral
Highlights so far, 4 songs in: Everything except for The Moonbeam Song Lowlights: The fuck is this Moonbeam song... 8 songs in: I've never had such a polarizing response to an album, whether in this 1001 album exercise or not. There are some genuinely great songs in here. And then there's Moonbeam and Coconut. I appreciate an artist that will do some weird shit. Not sure how I'll feel about this album in the end but it goes places. In the end, I mostly liked this album, but the weird sojourns into repetitive drums solos or bass lines or just boring ass songs about moonbeams keep me from pushing this above a 3 out of 5.
Only knew the hits, but this was worth the listen.
Presque classique
Good vibes. Not a fan of 70' music.
3/5
Good, a smooth listen, a few songs I recognized.
Way better than i thought it would be
it was fine, didn't blow me away...
Harry Nilsson has such a dynamic and interesting voice. Without You & Coconut are the most recognizable songs.
This album is such a mixed bag. Some tracks I feel myself really getting into it, then out of left field there's one like Coconut. It doesn't really gel for me.
- Gotta Get Up, Driving Along, The Moonbeam Song, I'll Never Leave You: that's some S-tier songwriting right there. - Jump Into The Fire sounds like a motherfucking train barrelling at you. - Too frequently Nilsson slips into cloying shtick here. Coconut, Early in the Morning, Let the Good Times Roll: I don't need any of that. - Unpopular opinion, but Without You has never really done it for me. Gorgeous recording, wonderful vocal performance (and seriously, Nilsson's delivery all across this album is fucking incredible. The guy can fucking sing), but as a song I just find it kind of unmemorable. - Down is...fine. - So, 50% absolutely brilliant, 20% good-not-great, 30% eh. At his best, Nilsson is a frighteningly good singer-songwriter, but on first listen, I can't quite call this a favourite. Who knows though! Maybe the bits I don't love now will grow on me. - The vocal layering on I'll Never Leave You is just *chef's kiss*
Interesting album that varied from .. yikes white man signing soul when he can't to catchy good 70s music.
Good vibes. Not something I would listen to again though.
Didn’t know those songs were his. Cool.
Pretty enjoyable and fun sounding

This was a treat.
Un honnête album de rock tranquille. C'était sympa mais pas transcendant, dans le style Cat Stevens est quand même au dessus. J'ai bien aimé Without You cependant.
7/10 Напомнило саундтрек к "стражи галактики", возможно там и были его песни. Некоторые треки мне знакомы. В целом что-то понравилось, некоторые были скучноваты.
Fun album that starts well but never is as good as that opening track.
fun album to listen to until you reach the last 4, even 5 songs… they are just not good. like i dont need some bozo telling me about lime and coconut for 3 minutes. before that last part a very decent album that, yea, is forgettable but not in a oh this album sucks forgettable. * Down * thinking about adding it to a playlist
pretty meh but an ok enough listen.
Yay!Was happy to hear this as it's from my childhood. I liked about 3 or 4 songs, esp when his voice is breathier like it is on The Point.
Early 70s experimental pop, with a few gems.
Interesting how a lot of people said it was very beatles vibes because thats the first thing i thought too! some interesting tunes, although i wouldnt listen to it myself on my daily basis, i think! Early in the morning very niceeee!
2 great songs. Interesting music.
Awesome name for an album. Plus it had the coconut/lime song and a few other bangers.
Skemmtileg plata, skringileg á köflum en ekki á slæman hátt.
3 solid stars.
Some catchy composition, lyrics are fairly bland and placing the meaning is difficult, repetitive songs across the whole album. Not my taste but some iconic tunes for a 52 year old album. Without you is by far the most popular track and displays the most musical complexity for me. I find it a compelling and emotional track however it just doesn't provide enough interesting ideas to keep me listening.
3-4
"American Beatle" his voice offends me a little. I like without you too much to give it a 2.
Some good songs on here, feels a little generic rock though. 3.5/5 FS: Down, Coconut, Fire, Never Leave
Yeah, it was ok. One or two memorable/recognisable tunes. Felt a bit kitsch and schmaltzy/gimmicky, even for 71. Ho hum.
Some unmistakable hits
This was fine. I don’t think I’d ever heard Coconut in its entirety before and it is fun, if maybe a bit appropriative.
Sometimes sweet, sometimes sad, sometimes funny, sometimes bad
Once again, utterly okay. Album cover reminds me of BeauFol 2.5
A surprise winner. The gentle start and ramp up to proper classic rock makes this an ideal morning album. I'm gonna add this to my "music for plants" playlist.
1. 2.5/5 2. 2/5 3. 2/5 4. 1,5/5 5. 2/5 6. 3/5 7. 3/5 8. 3/5 9. 3/5 10. 2/5 =3
Not great, not terrible 3,1
I think overall that was a nice listen and I definitely put it in my random one album a day list but, nothing stood out too too much to me. Favorite Tracks : ??? Rating : 3 / 5
a few great tracks and a bunch of okay tracks
I think this guy was pretty cool. And staggering/swaying to the beat of a different drummer.
Pretty good
I don't mind this. No skips. Concise collection of songs that don't overstay their welcome
Got through my backlog with this one - some decent tracks - his overdubbed vocal thing is interesting. Coconut song is silly.
Schmilly. Some recognizable songs on this album, that I wasn’t expecting as I’m not overly familiar with this chap. But some fun tunes that’ll get you going Early in the Morning. Not my favourite record ever, but Gotta Get Up is an undeniable bop. I don’t know who decided the verb for ‘good times’ would be ‘roll’, but we’re rolling with it.
Pretty fitting that we got this album on a holiday Monday, definitely feels like cottage music! Had heard of Harry before but it was fun to connect a bunch of these familiar songs to the artist. Fun music but it feels like he is imitating other acts sometimes - Beatles, Beach Boys and Randy Newman specifically. Gotta get up is a banger for sure. Also a fan of Down and Without You (classic!). There weren't any songs that I didn't enjoy. Solid album that I will probably go back to!
Album was delightful and fun. Just silly enough to be relaxed and poppy enough to have made a name for itself.
1. Gotta Get Up - Very peppy start to the album, can see why this was chosen as the opening track 2. Driving Along - Solid song, liked the second half of the song 3. Early In the Morning - It was ok, not sold 100% on this song 4. The Moonbeam Song - "Sun King" energy with the backing vocals 5. Down - Opening verse was solid, got very repetitive -- I really liked the back instruments 6. Without You - Beautiful orchestration 7. Coconut - She put the lime in the coconut 8. Let the Good Times Roll - Solid 9. Jump Into The Fire - 10/10 10. I'll Never Leave You - A quiet closer, a nice come down after the previous track Overall - Solid album with some high highs (opener Gotta Get Up and Jump In to the Fire), with some lows (Coconut), I still really enjoyed this album. 7.5/10
Good bathrobe vibes
Many have covered "Without You", but perdonally I don't think that anyone has bettered the Nilsson version. Anumber of very commercial songs, e.g. "Gotta Get Up", and "Jump Into The Fire", plus the rather annoying "Coconut".
Less engaging as a whole than I thought it would be.
JUMP INTO THE FIRE!! WE CAN MAKE EACH OTHER HAPPY!! WE CAN MAKE EACH OTHER HAPPY!! WE CAN MAKE EACH OTHER HAPPY!! WE CAN MAKE EACH OTHER HAPPY!! Awesome, Harry. You crazy asshole. This guy totally did LSD with the Beatles. Let the Good Times Roll, you fucking coconut.
Going into this blindly and the first song is one I've definitely heard. Gotta Get Up, it's the song they used in the Russian Doll show. Without You is also a popular song. What the fuck! Coconut is his too?! "She put the lime in the coconut...."
Quite a few tracks that I recognised from various bits of popular culture, although I've never heard of the artist. Decent listen
Nice
Not bad, just a bit boring.
Ken Leeeeee! Tulibu dibu douchuuuuuuu!
2.8
3/5
I thought I'd never heard of this artist until I heard one banging tune from my childhood. An album of two halves for me the beginning tracks (up to and including Coconut) were great but after that he seemed to change his style and I didn't like it.
The Beatles we have at home
What the hell is this record? Nilsson starts the record off sounding like Billy Joel, the next thing I know he’s belting out a big ballad, then literally on the next track… the Coconut song. Weird, eclectic, maybe well crafted, but inconsistent and does not hang together. An extra star because the Muppets covered “Coconut”.
A little bit of everything. I want to rate it higher and then I think about the moonbeam song.
Upon first looking at this album I started laughing...why is this thing on her. This desheveled man with one of the funniest (possibly first) jokes "Nilsson Schmilsson" but there are a few songs on here that classics I have heard on countless movies and shows. Namely Gotta Get Up, Without You, and Coconut. I can't say where I heard them but I know they have been used a bunch. There was a lot of variety on this album even though it is called Rock. Enjoyable end to the week.
Few goodies. Lotta meh.
Good tunes. Enjoyed. Though the discordance between Without You and Coconut is rather jarring.
Boring but in a cozy way, Nilsson gave less cutesy than I expected. There are no badly winking cuts, just music that pulls you in. Teaching the uninclined listener how to hear a record is a tricky thing, but Nilsson Schmilsson did it mostly. The balance of experimentalism with the form of later songs fell slightly flat for me, but again: uninclined.
Me sorprendió, no lo conocía, pero al parecer si algunas canciones, me gusta la onda parecida a algún material de los Beatles
I've listened to my fair share of alcohol-fueled, late-night recording sessions that yield both brilliance and nonsense. Harry Nilsson's Nilsson Schmilsson, an album that features Nilsson's signature angelic voice and a healthy dose of debauchery, is no exception. There's no denying the genius behind tracks like "Without You," which showcases Nilsson's remarkable vocal range and ability to convey emotion through his voice alone. However, the album's collaborations with John Lennon during his infamous "Lost Weekend" period, such as "You're Breakin' My Heart," also demonstrate Nilsson's ability to work with other great musicians to create something truly special. The track combines Nilsson's playful lyrics with Lennon's production skills to create a song that's both catchy and slightly off-kilter. But it's "Jump Into the Fire" that steals the show, thanks in part to me knowing it's the background track to the Henry Hill coke scene in Goodfellas. The song's pounding beat and Nilsson's frenzied vocals captured the madness and chaos of that scene perfectly, and it's hard not to feel a surge of adrenaline when listening to it, even without watching the movie. Overall, Nilsson Schmilsson is an album that's as eccentric and idiosyncratic as its creator. Nilsson's voice is the star of the show, but the album's eccentricities and nods to other notable figures in music history give it a charm that's hard to resist.
I get why he was a one hit wonder. Some songs were good others were meh not music for me
I knew more of these songs than I was aware. I was a fan of the diversity of the songs- they weren’t similar and were all different in some way, which made it exciting to listen. The length of each song and the overall album were perfect.
Too many songs on the album. Some great his, but lots of misses. Would go back and relisten to a handful of songs
Trodde mer på den här plattan. Ganska okej i alla fall.
Listened Before? N I don't know how, but I had never heard of this guy before. What an interesting story. He also appears to be a pretty good singer, so that's a good thing. I enjoyed the album. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Gotta Get Up
Good name, some classic emotional hits there
I blame him for Sufjan Stevens, you know.
YOU PUT THE LIME IN THE COCONUT AND TAKE IT ALL ROUND
Very decent 3.5
Es verdad que suena mucho a The Beatles
You put the lime in the coconut
Okay
I thought I liked it but then it became background noise 3/5
It is okay, but after all, there are plenty of similar... This is not a unique album, I do not feel to add it to my fav albums list. You know, when you don't want to skip the song on the radio, but don't want to shazam it.
Not a bad 70’s trip. 3/5
This is a really random album. It started off as a 2/5.. it was very delicate and I was finding it hard to engage with a lot of it. But then you have Without You, which is a sudden weird burst of passion and energy, then you have that followed by the quirky and upbeat Coconut. And from there you have some genuine stand-outs. Jump Into the Fire has some jams, and I'll never leave you is really interesting and weird and quite heartfelt. Harps and everything, violins. I really like it. So there's actually loads of variation across this whole album. It's a real mishmash.
coconut banger
Not too much contrast to other albums on the list, one 5/5 song doesn't do enough
It’s alright innit? Gotta Get Up and Without You are all timers.
iwhtout ouy
Fun and enjoyable listen! Starts with a spark and then kinda dies down for a bit. I'd never heard without you before, but felt compelled to belt the words to the chorus even though I didn't know them. And coconut is just wonderful! Favorite: down, without you, coconut!! Least favorite: early in the morning, moonbeam song
Some bops (Early in the Morning, Down, Let the Good Times Roll) mixed in with some duds (Gotta Get Up, Coconut). Overall very deserving of a listen. 3 cups of coffee out of 5 ☕☕☕
Wasn't sure about this at first. But then I put de lime in de coconut, drank it all up, and was satiated.
My favorite song was Coconut!!
I liked this i’m going 3.4
kinda slow for me, some interesting tracks
Without casting a value judgment here, this album feels way ahead of its time, in humor, master, instrumentation. I didn’t really like it that much, but a very strange time capsule to behold
High but low momenrs
Good album, got some jammers
Liked it
I do not know if I like this album mostly because it is good or mostly because it has a fun name.
Fine album, with few classics.
Some good classics here
It puts the lime in the coconut, I guess.
Empty brain day. Nothing to say, nothing to do. (The reviewer, not the artist).
Gotta get up is simply an amazing song. I also like Jump Into The Fire, it was in the shaun white snowboarding wii game soundtrack and was FIRE. Coconut is terrible. Otherwise an average sounding album 7/10
Generally enjoyed it
Middle of the road. Some good songs, some skippable. Gotta Get Up is fun. Without You and Coconut are a bit annoying
A couple of GREAT tracks, but overall not wildly impressed.
voice a bit annoying after a while, but nice vibes and good instrumentals!
He certainly had a spectacular and versatile voice. His version of Without You is a memorable early 70s radio staple. I would question his selection on some of the songs he covers, for example, Let The Good Times Roll.
interesting
Quirky cool soft rock
Better than expected from the guy who cursed the world with the coconut song.
nice, a little quirky, a little fun
Wasn’t sure what to expect and yet it all seemed familiar. Didn’t know he’s the lime in the coconut guy. All ok I suppose and yet I’ll never deliberately listen to it again in my life. So I guess I can live, if living is without it.
Decent, nice guitar riffs
Didn’t know this was the coconut and can’t live guy. Interesting overdubs, on the verge of experimental. Loved the bass on jump into the fire.
“Early in the Morning” had a neat sound. “Down” is catchy. LOL the lime in the coconut song! “Jump into the Fire” probably favorite.
I'm not at all familiar with Harry Nilsson. Or so I thought for the first four songs and then Without You hit, followed by Coconut and of course I've heard Harry Nilsson. As the album progressed I realized it was only the first few songs I didn't know. This is more of a statement about early 1970s radio rather than me being a Harry Nilsson fan. He's good and there are some things that aurally pleased me like that bass line on Jump Into the Fire. I'm always a bit thrilled when I dig a bass line because I have a hard time actually hearing the bass. Fun little drum solo too in that song that went on way longer than a typical drum solo, which I thoroughly enjoyed. All in all a number of nostalgic songs from my childhood but artistically I felt the album in its entirety was kind of like Harry's bathrobe on the album cover. I mean it's fine, but it doesn't wow me.
Easy listening on a Friday morning!
Very interesting songs, pleasant to listen to. The lime with the coconut song was oddly catchy. I would listen to his stuff again and further explore his discography.
Heard a lot of these songs before and often
I usually like this kind of music but i'm just not feeling it
I really enjoyed this listen! Harry Nilsson has a great, clear tone of voice. Good variety and an overall whimsical vibe
He has a very easy to listen to voice and the music really complimented that.
Kind of easy listening, nothing exciting but nothing offensive. It was fine!
Great Chill Album
Never heard of this guy. Nilsson Schmilsson is a great name for an album though. Without You is a song I’ve heard before. THIS GUY DOES THE LIME IN THE COCONUT SONG?
Every time I listen to Harry Nilsson I think — I should listen to more Harry Nilsson.
it has its moments but maybe just not my thing
It’s ok, felt average-to-good until I got to the famous “Lime in the coconut” song
Cute
Was not familiar with Harry Nilsson until Russian Doll. Or so I thought. Several tracks on here I was familiar with. All round a fun listen with lots of cool tracks.
I knew there had to be a Beatles connection before I even read his bio. Loved this era of music. He also worked at a bank B)
Great album title. Fantastic cover photo. One stone cold classic track. The rest a mixed bag; second side better than the first.
imagine how good this might have been if he had given a shit
Absolutely mad that Without You and Coconut are consecutive songs on any album
Meh
A surprising album by someone I’ve never heard of, lots of good songs on here, it says he was influenced by John Lennon and it shows on the album, if you’re a fan of that style a music this is up your alley
KEN LEEEEEEEEEEEE
There are worse places to be stuck than between late Beatles and early Randy Newman.
yeah, comercial
Oh hey it’s the Russian Doll song! Oh hey it’s the Tarantino movie song! Def heard Without you on the radio as a kid. Alright not a bad album. I’ll never come back, but three stars for the Spanish version of Without You.
Charging into these like snarly rhinos, he seems to have a fair bit of fun in the recordings and a good musician. Very Beatles-ish sound. Not sure if his medical advice, however.
Another case of an album and artist I've never heard of...only to realize I know multiple songs very well. Enjoyed the listen.
like spending the evening your weird stoner uncle's houseboat
not a huge fan. I can hear some Beatles influence but this is nowhere near as good as them. Jump into the Fire is the highlight of the album for sure, but other than that none of the songs really grabbed me.
solid
Nice one overall. Dont have a lot to say about his one.
A good soft rock album with a unique and inexplicable touch that makes it a bit outcast. "Jump Into The Fire" is an insanely great track that I knew before (thanks to the superb Heather Trost cover of that song). However, I don't feel bounded to this record and I don't think I'll listen again.
p251. 1971. 3 stars I feel like I should like this more than I do but... meh. Don't get me wrong, lyrically it's sharp, he had a cracking voice and it has its tunes, but I think it says a lot when the biggest track on it was written by someone else. And it has an utterly redundant cover of Let The Good Times Roll. When it's good, its very good, but there is a lot of filler that hasn't aged well. It feels and sounds like a hipster Billy Joel.
Strangely compelling at times, just not all the time
I know 4/5 songs on this album and they are all decentish. (\"Without You\" does grind my gears though)Trouble is when you put them altogether on an album it all sounds a bit eclectic with no real flow. A real mish mash. Don't know what else to say. Nilsson had a longish career and this was by far his biggest album. He loved a beer or 7 with his pals Ringo and Moon...died in his 50s of a heart attack. Also rock stars died in his London flat. Another dull 3.
3.5, ale 3 here.
Yea no miss me with that
3/15/22
3.5
weird but in a good way
Decent
Американский певец в Лондоне. Классные треки – кавер Without You, авторские: Coconut, Jump Into The Fire.
Weird in a pleasant way, but not much stood out to me apart from the Coconut song. Best track: Coconut
Fun but forgettable, save for a few songs. I liked it, but I'm not clamoring for another listen.
Some lovely Macca/Beatles-y stuff. But also that bloody coconut song.
Well it's not terrible
Mukavan letkeetä. Vaikea kyllä olla vertaamatta Beatlesiin, ja tuntuu paikoin vaan halvalta beatles-kopiolta. Mutta halpa beatles-kopio voi silti olla ihan jees.
Apparently Nilsson was a favorite of the Beatles, and I saw some indications of great songwriting, but there were many misses as well.
Suprisingly OK. I wasn't looking forward to it when I saw it but actually enjoyed it.
Some good tunes, some typical 70's stuff
Hey I knew some of these songs! Pretty cool
Not my favorite. But without you is easily the standout of the album I knew I recog ized it before. Coconut is funny
Three schmee
Rather underwhelming
Very Good 3/5++
Another gap in my pop lexicon: I never heard of this guy, though I recognized the coconut song (and, uh, holy fake patois). Foundations of the post-60s post-crooner.
Really unique artist..almost hard to define the sound. Nothing remarkable but definitely a few recognizable songs that we all know.
Professionelles Statement: is eh ok
Early in the morning -- cool time signature stuff Without you -- i've heard it before Jump into the fire -- learn this on bass lmao
I was excited to see this album come up. Gotta Get Up is fun having been a big fan of Russian Doll a couple years ago. My favorite tracks are Driving Along and Without You.
Hadn't heard of this guy before but recognised a few of the songs on the album. Enjoyable and of its time. Probably won't rush back to listen.
